BADGER FOOTBALL Homecoming Week

fter the 2011 season, the Bonners Ferry football program looked to start new with the hiring of Casey McLaughlin, a coach with a proven track record from Sandpoint. But just after one season, the new head coach stepped down as his predecessor Ed DePriest had done previously. Once again, the Bonners Ferry football program was looking at a new start, a new head coach and new program. With a solid group of returning players, including 19 seniors, the idea of starting over was seemingly disappointing to many in the community. The search for the new head coach seemed to drag on, and it was only weeks before the start of summer practices when a new coach was finally named. When it came to deciding on who would be the best fit to lead the football program
into the future, the Bonners Ferry board decided to look to the past and named ex Bonner Ferry football coach Ed DePriest as the new head coach. “Its exciting to be back,” said DePriest. The new coaching staff has wasted no time in making a noticeable impact on how the team plays. Wins don’t come easily for this program and facing tough competition to start the season could have proved disastrous; but as it stands, the Bonners Ferry High School Badgers head into the 2013 Homecoming Week with a record of 2-1 bolstered by last week’s win at home over Medical Lake. Badger head coach Ed DePriest said, “We’re working hard and heading in the right direction.” With 19 seniors on the roster, the team mood can be described as one of tenacity. “We have a lot of players - a lot of solid

players. We are really stressing team,” said DePriest. “It’s great to have the kids who can make big plays, but I emphasize that these are made with the contributions of all players. The skills plays are the ones that everyone sees, but these plays were set up by the linemen.” The fast start has seemed to energize not only the players and coaches, but the community as well. The energy is contagious and the team is the talk of the town. “This is a big deal,” one Badger fan said. “A winning team means better business in town.” Fans see this team spirit during the opening team introductions. The Badgers run onto the field as a team. “They’re buying into the fact that we’re together in this adventure,” said DePriest.
start out with. It will help them become better as the season goes on. I believe that this team has great potential, and their effort and ability to play will determine how the season turns out,” said DePriest. The Badgers will be hosting the Freeman Scotties out of Rockford, Washington in Friday’s Homecoming game. The Freeman Scotties are undefeated this season and after going 7-2 last season and defeating the Badgers 34-6 last year, the Badgers will be facing a worthy competitor as they try to improve to 3-1 on the season. This game will be electric, a culminating event in a week of Badger Homecoming festivities aimed at celebrating and increasing school spirit.
The Badgers already have experienced a dramatic comeback win against Libby, and a solid team effort over Medical Lake. With the teeth of their schedule coming up, the team is feeling they are in a position and more than ready to turn this program around. But wins won’t come easy, as their conference seems to be as competitive as ever. “We’ve been playing some very competitive opponents, and that’s good to

ED DEPRIEST
COREY RICHARDS
HEAD COACH
DEFENSIVE LINE AND OFFENSIVE LINE
Ed Depriest is no stranger to Badger football fans. He served as the head coach for Bonners Ferry from 2007 to 2010 and returns to the helm this year. His coaching career spans 30 years, and as a fitness and weightlifting teacher at Bonners Ferry High School, Depriest has the opportunity to interact with his players much more than just on the football field. As a teacher and a football coach he shares with his students and young athletes the important life lessons that he believes come with playing the game of football. “Football teaches life lessons and prepares young people for the future challenges in life, as well as teaching hard work, commitment, dedication, and team work,” said Depriest who looks forward to seeing his team progress and improve as they go through the season together. When asked what one piece of advice he has for his young athletes, Depriest replied that it is the words of John Wooden, the basketball player and coach who led UCLA to seven NCAA championships in a row. “If you prepare and give your best effort, in whatever you do, win or lose, you are a success.”
DON ALT
OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINE COACH / JV DEFENSE Coach Alt began his Bonners Ferry coaching career in 1991 as the junior varsity offensive coordinator under then head coach Tom Wofford. From 1996 to 2007 Coach Alt was the assistant defensive coordinator for the junior varsity team at Bonners Ferry; and from 2008 to 2011 he served as the offensive and defensive line coach for Bonners Ferry Junior High. Last year was Coach Alt’s first year coaching Bonners Ferry High School football. Before he came to Bonners Ferry, he was one of the assistant coaches at Potlatch High School in the early 1990s. When not coaching football, Coach Alt works for the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy. He loves to be involved with the youth and especially enjoys watching the players grow both in their athletic ability and as a person as the season progresses. “I am looking forward to coaching a couple great groups of kids,” said Alt who adds that it is rewarding seeing them improve game after game and applying that improvement toward their life skills. Advice to his team: Football is special because you only get to play it for 6 to 8 years of your life, but it applies to every part of your life as you grow up. Working hard together as a team, with different people, with the community around you and dealing with the ups and downs of life, are just a few of the things football teaches.

A native of Bonners Ferry, Coach Richards graduated from the school in 1987 and after playing football for Bonners Ferry he went on to play for two years at Rocky Mountain College. He has spent over 20 years coaching in his hometown and along with Coach Cory Kramer, he helped start the Bonners Ferry fifth and sixth grade tackle football program. Coach Richards is a full time dad to his kids, Eli and Shaylynn, and is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in social work at Boise State. He said this group of young athletes all know how to win and play hard as a team.” I believe these kids have a lot of talent and skill and can go a long way this season,” said Coach Richards. This year’s seniors were the first group of little badgers from the 6th grade tackle program that Cory Kramer and Richards started. “I really enjoy working with kids and watching them form into a team and grow as individuals,” said Richards who adds that watching the young athletes achieve their goals on and off the field is very rewarding. Advice to his team: Even with the Lord holding your hand to guide, one must find ambition of self-worth from inside to be able to move forward and succeed.
DAVE KOON
EQUIPMENT MANAGER For anyone who is familiar with Bonners Ferry football, they know that David Koon has been a fixture on the sidelines for many years. Koon has played an important role with the football team for the last 34 years as equipment manager. “I have been through a lot of coaches,” said Koon.
COREY KRAMER RECEIVERS AND LINEBACKERS
It is likely that Coach Kramer considers the football field his second home. After all, he has spent a lot of time on the fields in Bonners Ferry. He is a 1993 graduate of Bonners Ferry High School and played football for them during his high school years. He has coached the sport since 1995 at all levels from fifth grade through high school. When not coaching football, Coach Kramer is a heavy equipment operator for Foust Incorporated in Bonners Ferry, where he has worked since 1998.
He says he receives a lot of joy from interacting with the kids and watching them grow and mature as they go from junior tackle all the way through the varsity level. Much of his role with the Badgers includes helping with the equipment and providing water to the players when needed. But he sees his most important duty as doing what he can to help the team get mentally ready for what takes place on the field. “I really enjoy being with the players,” said Koon who calls himself a motivator. Advice to his team: Go out and have fun, but remember to work together as a team.
“This is a great group of young men,” said Kramer. “I have coached almost every one of them at some level through the years, and if we as a team can come together, the sky is the limit. “ Advice to his team: Work hard. Be respectful to others. Be positive.

he Bonners Ferry Badger Cheerleading team heads into the 2013-2014 Homecoming week with several activities planned to support all sports teams and bring Badger spirit. Out of a squad total of 18, 9 are seniors. Coach Tammy Hedrick said, “These girls have been cheering together since eighth grade.” An upbeat, team spirit pervades the group. They attended the United Cheer Association’s camp in Cheney, Washington this summer, sharpening skills and learning new material. They attend the Badger Boosters events, assisting with the BBQs, such as that at Panhandle State Bank last week. They will be helping with Mountain West Bank’s Customer Appreciation/Homecoming Kickoff this Friday.
From Our Team To Yours
Said Hedrick, “The girls work tirelessly— Homecoming, Moose Madness, assemblies, stunting, Districts in February, State in March.” Each cheerleader also contributes at least 10 hours of community service. Added Hedrick, “This year we are adopting two miles under the Highway Adoption program.” Coaches Hedrick and Karen Moore noted that cheer season lasts the entire school year. The senior girls will be celebrating senior night with the Badger football team this fall. “The girls work hard at being good role models, to make Badgers proud,” said Hedrick. Throughout this Homecoming Week, the Bonners Ferry High School Badger Cheerleaders will be actively promoting school spirit, engaging fans, and supporting all teams and students. Their motto: “Badger power up for Badger pride!”

PREVENT SPORTS INJURIES Staying Safe on the Field — Article Credit to www.stopsportsinjuries.org
F
ootball is one of the most popular sports played by young athletes, and it leads all other sports in the number of injuries sustained. In 2007, more than 920,000 athletes under the age of 18 were treated in emergency rooms, doctors’ offices, and clinics for football-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
What Types of Injuries are the Most Common in Football? Injuries occur during football games and practice due to the combination of high speeds and full contact. While overuse injuries can occur, traumatic injuries such as concussions are most common. The force applied to either bringing an opponent to the ground or resisting being brought to the ground makes
football players prone to injury anywhere on their bodies, regardless of protective equipment.
Common Injuries in Fooball Players Traumatic Injuries Knee injuries in football are the most common, especially those to the anterior or posterior cruciate ligament (ACL/ PCL) and to the menisci (cartilage of the knee). These knee injuries can adversely affect a player’s longterm involvement in the sport. Football players also have a higher chance of ankle sprains due to the surfaces played on and cutting motions. Shoulder injuries are also quite common and the labrum (cartilage bumper surrounding the socket part of the shoulder) is particularly susceptible to
injury, especially in offensive and defensive linemen. In addition, injuries to the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) or shoulder are seen in football players. Concussions Football players are very susceptible to concussions. A concussion is a change in mental state due to a traumatic impact. Not all those who suffer a concussion will lose consciousness. Some signs that a concussion has been sustained are headache, dizziness, nausea, loss of balance, drowsiness, numbness/tingling, difficulty concentrating, and blurry vision. The athlete should return to play only when clearance is granted by a health care professional.

Overuse Injuries Low-back pain, or back pain in general, is a fairly common complaint in football players due to overuse. Overuse can also lead to overtraining syndrome, when a player trains beyond the ability for the body to recover. Patellar tendinitis (knee pain) is a common problem that football players develop and can usually be treated by a quadriceps strengthening program. Heat Injuries Heat injuries are a major concern for youth football players, especially at the start of training camp. This usually occurs in August when some of the highest temperatures and humidity of the year occur. Intense physical activity can result in excessive sweating that depletes the body of salt and water. The earliest symptoms are painful cramping of major muscle groups. However, if not treated with body cooling and fluid replacement, this can progress to heat exhaustion and heat stroke — which can even result in death. It is important for football players to be aware of the need for fluid replacement and to inform medical staff of symptoms of heat injury.

• Perform proper warm-up and cooldown routines • Consistently incorporate strength training and stretching • Hydrate adequately to maintain health and minimize cramps • Stay active during summer break to prepare for return to sports in the fall • Wear properly fitted protective equipment, such as a helmet, pads, and mouthguard • Tackle with the head up and do not lead with the helmet • Speak with a sports medicine professional or athletic trainer if you have any concerns about injuries or prevention strategies

LICEBUSTERS
Lice Awareness and Prevention — Article by Paul Bonnell & Students Desirae Minor, Brandon Newsom & Jeremiah Varelman
“
If there’s somethin’ strange living in your hood, Who ya gonna call? Licebusters!”
The Bonners Ferry High School Drama class has teamed up with Boundary County School District #101 School nurse Karen Moore to spread the word about lice awareness and prevention. Set to the tune of “Ghostbusters,” the Licebusters song is upbeat, enthusiastic, and inventive. Karen Moore approached drama teacher David Carpenter last year about an interactive way to address lice awareness and encourage elementary and middle school kids to take preventive measures. Carpenter said, “We embraced the idea. It was a kid who came up with the Licebusters take on Ghostbusters. It is so fun. The kids have been involved in the creative process.” Moore said that the response has been superb. The interactive assembly engages the younger students. “It’s fun, a bonding experience.” She notes that lice and nits are not dangerous, but they are highly
contagious and annoying. She said, “The assemblies have been rewarding. Kids come up to me later and say, ‘Mrs. Moore, we don’t share hats now. We don’t share hoodies.’” Carpenter added, “Any time we can get kids out in the community and serving others that’s a great thing. Little kids look up to the older kids. It’s a wonderful opportunity for positive affirmation.” BFHS junior Dominic Tobin will be creating
a video short of the Licebusters program. The BFHS Drama classes Licebusters assemblies visited Boundary County Middle School, Valley View Elementary, Naples Elementary, and Mount Hall Elementary on Monday, September 16.

HELP WANTED
A sign was hung in an office window. It read:
Under New Ownership!
Help wanted. Must type 70 words a minute. Must be computer literate. Must be bilingual. An equal opportunity employer. A dog was ambling down the street and saw the sign. He looked at it for a moment, pulled it down with his mouth, and walked into the manager’s office, making it clear he wished to apply for the job.
New Menu with Unique Daily Specials!
The office manager laughed and said, “I can’t hire a dog for this job.” The dog pointed to the line: “An equal opportunity employer.” So the manager said, “OK, take this letter and type it.” The dog went off to the word processor and returned a minute later with the finished letter, perfectly formatted. The manager said, “Alright, here’s a problem. Write a computer program for it and run it.” Fifteen minutes later, the dog came back with the correct answer. The manager still wasn’t convinced. “I still can’t hire you for this position. You’ve got to be bilingual.”
Now Serving Beer & Wine
The dog looked up at the manager and said, “Meow.”
BEWARE OF DOG
Upon entering a little country store, the stranger noticed a sign warning, “Danger! Beware of dog!” posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor beside the cash register. “Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?” he asked the owner. “Yep, that’s him,” came the reply. The stranger couldn’t help but be amused. “That certainly doesn’t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?” “Because,” the owner explained, “Before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him.”

Consider all of the finger-licking possibilities by trying the following simple watermelon push pop recipe -- it’s healthy and quick, making it ideal for back-to-school breakfasts.
BREAKFAST PUSH POPS Some parents look forward to the back-toschool rush, handling it like the schoolshopping, scheduling pros they are. Even planning school snacks is part of the agenda.
To find more watermelon recipes, from homemade sorbet and watermelon ice cubes to watermelon grilling sauce, visit the National Watermelon Promotion Board website at www.watermelon.org.
When it comes to school snacks, one easy place to start is watermelon. Watermelon is 92 percent water, meaning those dribbling, sweet juices are hydrating as well as delicious.
Ingredients: • Push pop molds (sold at most restaurant supply stores) • Granola
According to registered dietitian and author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness” Elizabeth Somers, the tasty fruit is also low in or free of cholesterol, fat and sodium. What’s more, eating watermelon increases free arginine, which helps maintain cardiovascular function.
• Diced watermelon chunks • Yogurt of choice Instructions: Layer the watermelon, yogurt and granola and top with yogurt and watermelon chunks. Freeze push pop molds, and enjoy the Breakfast Push Pops when you’re on the go.

The Rusty Moose Tavern & Grill A New Name with the Same Friendly Atmosphere By Patty Hutchens
Don’t let the name fool you. The Rusty Moose Tavern and Grill may sound like a new place in town, but the owners, Jill and Dan Nystrom, are familiar to many. Jill owned Jill’s Café for nine years and in addition to changing the name, she and Dan have also expanded the restaurant. In July they expanded into the adjoining space, previously known as The Sportsman’s Club, and the tavern side of the restaurant opened on September 5th. “We have a full service restaurant,” said Jill who adds that they keep five different beers on tap, have a wide variety of beer available by the bottle and also serve wine by the glass. The couple has many exciting things planned for the Rusty Moose Tavern and Grill. In addition to introducing a ladies’ night each Wednesday, they plan on having Monday Night Football gatherings, serving a special prime rib on Fridays and a late night menu from 10pm to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. “We have much more to come in the fall and are also planning to host a couple of ski and board parties,” said Jill. In an effort to accommodate their clientele, they serve lunch from 10am to 4pm and dinner from 4pm to 9pm. Their dinner menu has something for everyone including steaks, salmon, shrimp, a variety of appetizers from which to choose and if you are really hungry check out the Bull Burger! If you are in search of a good cup of coffee, you can swing by and try The Rusty Moose’s own blend of espresso. They also serve ice cream and freshly made desserts and offer catering off premise, whether it’s for a company party, wedding or class reunion. The hometown feel cannot be overlooked as Jill has lived in Bonners Ferry her entire life and Dan, while originally from Portland, has lived in Bonners Ferry since he was a young boy. When they are not busy running the restaurant, Dan enjoys the outdoors and wildlife of North Idaho while Jill enjoys spending time with their daughter Melissa and granddaughter Aurora. Jill is also an active member of the Bonners Ferry community and sits on the Board of Directors for the Boundary County Historical Society Museum. They are both hard working and possess a lot of determination and that, coupled with their loyal patrons, have helped them be successful in their business. Stop in soon, whether it is for prime rib on Friday, ladies’ night on Wednesday, Monday night football, or just for a good meal. You will love what the Rusty Moose Tavern and Grill have to offer!
Prime Rib & Beer Specials Serving Peanuts Family Friendly Atmostphere
The Rusty Moose Tavern and Grill Rust can be considered a sign that something is weathered, worn and aged. Moose are beautiful creatures that can be rusty in color but are not only defined by their age. They behold beauty not understood by all, they are majestic animals that play a role in life and become weathered from their adventures. We are similar to the rusty moose in many ways. We can grow wiser with age, share stories of our adventures and tales from the past. We can even show a little rust of our own-not only of age, but our experiences and history. The Rusty Moose Tavern and Grill is a place where you can come to enjoy a delicious meal, beverage of your liking and don’t forget dessert! The atmosphere beaming with a homage of life and history of Bonners Ferry Idaho. We would like to be your haven where you can come and join us at our watering hole, share some of your history with us, make new friends and feed your hunger for the best food in town.

Your Weight Matters Take the Pledge to Talk to a Healthcare Provider
W
ould you lose even that small amount of weight if you knew it might improve your health and reduce your risk of certain diseases? Well, experts say it’s true. And with an estimated 72 million people in the U.S. affected by obesity, and nearly one out of three affected by excess weight, a new campaign called “Your Weight Matters” aims to do something a bit novel -- without haranguing anyone -- when it comes to drawing attention to how vulnerable such individuals are to diseases like diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. “The point is to prompt a conversation about weight between patients and their healthcare providers,” explains Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), which developed the campaign. “Right now, unfortunately such regular conversations rarely occur.” More specifically, the OAC is encouraging individuals to measure their weight and take the Campaign Challenge by making an online pledge to talk to their healthcare
22 Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.bonnersferryliving.com
provider about the results. The campaign’s website (www.YourWeightMatters.org) makes the first part of that easy by including a calculator for measuring body mass index, or BMI, which is found by dividing your weight by your height squared. That number places you in one of the four main categories healthcare professionals use when assessing weight -- “normal,” “overweight,” “obesity,” and “severe obesity” -- with a detailed description included to better understand the ramifications of each. Besides all that, what do you actually get by taking the pledge? Well, first, a free toolkit replete with useful information on things like proper nutrition, emotional issues, wellness tips and weightloss options and their benefits. And second -- and this may be the neatest part, given how intimidating that first healthcare provider-patient conversation can sometimes be -- sample questions for you to actually pose during your appointment.
Making Sure Your Loved One is Safe
A
ccidental falls make up the majority of hospital visits for seniors living alone. Despite the healthy desire to be independent and self-reliant, living alone presents challenges for older adults or those losing their mobility. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, nine out of ten Americans over age 60 want to stay independent and live in their own home. But over 45 percent of them suffer from one or more chronic illnesses, and 33 percent fall at least once throughout the year. Simple tasks become exponentially harder for handicapped adults or senior citizens living alone who may not have full range of motion, sharp eyesight or strong bones. But that doesn’t mean older adults can’t live independently by themselves -- they must simply be aware of their limitations. Consider the following solutions to common problems experienced by single seniors. Problem: Transportation struggles.
Solution: There are options, but they take collaboration and planning. Seniors can run errands using public transportation, carpools or walking in small groups. Gather friends and plan shopping trips in advance so neighbors, church groups or local Bridge clubs can participate and share rides. Offer to contribute gas money if you don’t have a car or valid license.
The bathroom is particularly hazardous -- one-third of seniors suffer falls in the bathroom -- due to unforgiving surfaces and tasks like getting in and out of the tub. Look into showers tailored around the specific needs of older adults, such as the walk-in shower from Safe Step WalkIn Tub Co. Senior-friendly features like a foldable chair and hand-held shower wand will make showering easy and relaxing once more. See more at www. safesteptub.com/living. Problem: Feelings of isolation or depression. Solution: As a senior, your network often grows smaller as you age, but isolation can be just as detrimental as smoking or obesity. Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discovered that people with strong relationships and social connections live longer than those without.
Problem: Senior falls. Solution: Protect yourself against falls by installing safety supports and grab bars throughout the house, paying special attention to the kitchen, stairs and bathroom.
