PUBLISHER So Long Summer We Set the Standard!
SEPTEMBER IS HERE, and the long hot days of summer will soon be a distant memory. Getting back into a new routine can be challenging, but there are ways to make it easier on the whole family. We all seem to lead busy lives. Kids have homework, extracurricular activities, sports and more. As parents, we may feel as though we are constantly in the car going from one place to another, leaving little time for some quality moments spent with our kids. Why not do something to make this year a little easier and create memories at the same time? Plan a time each week, whether it is during the week or on the weekend, that is set aside exclusively for just you and your family. Kids will know ahead of time so that they can plan around that time. Pick up the kids after practice and go out for pizza. Maybe plan a Saturdaymorning hike. Take a picnic to the park, or during the winter months, pack up the ski gear and head up to the mountain. To make it easier on you, try planning the week’s meals ahead of time to ensure you aren’t running to the grocery store a few times a week after work or on your lunch hour. Time seems to slip away so quickly, and I am a firm believer in devoting as much time as we can to family while we still can. If you are at a loss of ideas for how to spend some quality time together, take a look at our calendar in this publication and online. And remember, making memories does not have to cost money. It is the time that is spent with one another that will create traditions and memories that will last a lifetime.

FEAR COLOR? INTRODUCE COLOR TO YOUR HOME THROUGH PAINT, PILLOWS AND MORE!
PEACE, TRANQUILITY, SERENITY … these are words that make your shoulders relax, your eyelids heavy and have you picturing yourself in a quiet oasis. I imagine low lights, the smell of essential oils, my body the perfect temperature and in a state of relaxation in peaceful surroundings. Do you fear color? Are you too chicken to splash some paint on your wall because it may be too bold or trendy? The good news is that paint is one of the least expensive things to change, and it’s one of the easiest things to test out before you commit. Most paint stores will sell quart-size containers of any color, allowing you to paint a small section of your wall and observe the color in different light throughout the day. That way, you can live with it before you commit. Other ways to introduce color would be to use patterns and bold colors in accent pieces. Often times, adding that splash of color or texture is all a room needs to really pull everything together. There are many ways to introduce that color accent. Throw pillows, furniture, backsplashes, tile accents, island cabinetry, glass and more. Just remember, not everything has to match. In fact, when you match everything, it becomes too monochromatic and you lose a lot of the color simply because there’s no contrast. If you have dark cabinets, you should

contrast that with lighter countertops. If you have dark flooring, you can contrast that with painted or a lighter stain color on the cabinets. In the kitchen, lots of folks are going with a painted island whereas the perimeter cabinets are a stained wood.

Adding stain glass or a pattern glass in your entry door, cabinets or table tops would be another way to introduce color and textures. Besides paint and furniture, window coverings are another great way to add colors and textures. It’s amazing how much a pattern or color will pop with natural light illuminating it. Most have features that allow you to still see out and won’t encroach on your views. There are just a few things to remember when it comes to adding color and increasing the boldness factor at your home. There are things you definitely want to avoid. Using too many accent pillows. I’m talking so many you can’t sit on the sofa or it takes you half an hour to unload your bed. It’s simple. Select a few pillows of varying sizes, shapes and patterns and display them together.
can set your drink down, you may have too much display. Select a few and store the rest. During seasonal changes, swap them out. Too many patterns and textures. You don’t wear stripes with plaid, right? Same goes for your house; you shouldn’t have competing patterns or textures. If the sofa has a pattern, select solid-color pillows. If the wall has patterned wallpaper, go with simple solid or complementary window coverings. In short, don’t be afraid to add color or textures, and if you question whether or not it’s a good choice, seek out and ask a professional for their input.
Too many trinkets. If you have to move things out of the way on a side table so you

TAILGATE TIME
Mountain West Bank is serving it up. By Colin Anderson.
NOTHING PAIRS WITH FOOTBALL like meat on the grill, and if you’re looking for the place to grab a meal and get fired up before this season’s Badger football Homecoming game, then look no further than the Mountain West Bank parking lot. Mountain West employees will continue the recent tailgate tradition again this season on September 29 when the Bonners Ferry Badgers take on the St. Maries Lumberjacks during Homecoming week. Mountain West will have the grill fired up before, during and right after the annual Homecoming parade. You can grab a burger or hot dog and a drink before the parade gets started or swing by afterward. All of the food and beverages are provided by Mountain West at no cost, but donations are encouraged as all of the proceeds from the tailgate go to the junior class parents, who in turn use the money on the Senior All-Nighter at the end of the school year. If you swing by after the parade, you’ll get a chance to sing the fight song with the band, meet some of the players and enjoy cheers and

performances by the Badger cheer squad. There is also a gift basket worth about $100 that you could win by purchasing a $1 raffle ticket. The winner will be announced during the Homecoming game. The event is completely family friendly, and everyone is encouraged to stop by to show their support for our local athletes. The tailgate party is expected to go from around 11am to 2pm or until the food runs out, so be sure to get there a little early. Drop by to show our students your support, enjoy a meal with friends and neighbors, and get ready for one of the biggest football games of the year!

CARTER COUNTRY FARM AND FEED has been a staple in the Bonners Ferry community for the past three years, with their original Sandpoint location standing strong for the past 18 years. Owner Charlie Carter has created not just one but two locations for customers to find everything they need for their animals' health and wellness, plus so much more! Charlie has lived in North Idaho for the past 25 years. He was initially attracted to the area because of its natural beauty and the opportunity for economic growth. “I soon was attracted to the independent nature of the citizens of the community and their selfreliance and naturally helpful attitude,” he says. “This has been a great place to live and to do business.” Located on Main Street, customers will find everything including pet and farm feed and supplies, animal health supplies and products, fencing, hardware and garden supplies at Carter Country. They are also retailers for EzyDog and were the first retailers in North America to offer EzyDog products; a line of active dog gear encompassing the rugged outdoor lifestyle dogs love. According to Charlie, “Their products have enriched our offerings, and they are [wonderful] folks to deal with. We've enjoyed this association with fellow local small-business people.” Sandpoint residents John and Alana Hatcher opened EzyDog, which manufactures and distributes products for dogs—everything from leashes, collars and harnesses to backpacks, floatation vests and jackets—in 2003. “From day one, we have focused on the active lifestyle of people and their dogs. Whether out for a hike, run or the water with your dog, or traveling somewhere to spend time with your dog, we offer solution-based products to enhance the dog/guardian experience,” says John. “Our products are built with several
materials used by the outdoor industries’ elite, particularly competitors in water sports— people and dogs alike.” The couple relocated to Sandpoint in 2001 “for the love of the area, first and foremost,” says John. “Within a very short amount of time, our dogs approved as well.” Like Charlie, it is vital to John and Alana to ensure the customer is happy with their purchase, striving to make sure that their customers are getting a superior product at a good value. John and Alana’s love of animals doesn’t just involve EzyDog. John has been on the Board of Directors of the Panhandle Animal Shelter since 2013, and he and his wife are active volunteers. “We also have committed to make sure that every dog at the shelter leaves with a brand new collar just to make sure they start off on the right paw!” says John. Carter Country has set itself apart from other similar stores in that it offers a unique shopping experience for pet lovers, 4-H and FFA members and their families, as well as for farmers and ranchers. It is important to Charlie and his staff that they show personal attention to each customer’s specific needs and offer informed suggestions to meet these needs. “I enjoy getting to know members of the community and working closely with them and their families,” says Charlie. “Working with the 4-H and FFA members to help them with their projects is particularly rewarding. It's such a joy to watch them show their animals at the fair and to be able to bid on some of their animals.” With not only one but two successful businesses, Charlie attributes this success to his entire staff and their training in product knowledge and animal health, which leads to great customer service. “Our staff knows how to answer customers' questions and help

them find solutions for their pet, farm animal, gardening, fencing and hardware needs,” says Charlie. “We treat each customer like the special person they are, with a friendly smile, as we listen first and then make suggestions to solve their problems and meet their needs.” Carter Country Farm and Feed and EzyDog are businesses both passionate about animals and their people. “Animals are the core reason we exist, and helping their people take care of them is fundamental,” says Charlie.

HANDS-ON SCIENCE The Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars Program. By Colin Anderson
HIGH-PAYING JOBS in the fields of math, science and engineering are available across the country, but employers are having a hard time filling them with American citizens. Interest in science and math is dwindling in our schools despite the ever-advancing fields of technology. Advanced classes can be difficult and often require more work and study, which is hard to fit into a typical teenager’s busy schedule of academics, cocurricular activities, social life and family. An online program available across the state is hoping to breathe new interest in the fields by giving students an understanding of exciting fields of study as well as hands-on learning. The Idaho Science and Aerospace Scholars (ISAS) is a competitive program that allows high school juniors to take an engaging online NASA-developed course on space exploration through Idaho Digital Learning. This past year, four students from Bonners Ferry High School were accepted into the program, including Ryne Rae. “I really didn’t know much about it other than it was online and at the end there was a space camp,” recalled Rae.
three others from across the state outside of normal school hours. They spent many Fridays after school and Sunday afternoons working on their plan online. At the beginning of class, students were informed that only the top-88 participants would be invited to a summer camp held at Boise State, creating a fun yet competitive environment amongst the participants. Rae was determined to be a part of this, and through his hard work he made the cut and was invited to Boise. As someone who became interested in robotics in middle school and had already passed all available math and science classes available at Bonners Ferry High School his sophomore year, this was a great opportunity to further his studies and find out more about possible future careers. The first day of camp, instructors broke down the previous onlineonly relationships by giving a group of more than 40 individuals a project they all had to work together to solve.
The course exposes juniors from all across the state to a number of fields of study in engineering and space exploration. “We learned about cryptology, the physics for launching a rocket into space, and as a group project created a space flight plan,” said Rae. Creating the flight required Rae to work with

“It was amazing and a little awkward. You find out a lot more about people face to face than when you’re only meeting online,” said Rae. Students at the camp gained firsthand knowledge on how to execute a space mission and were divided into groups such as mission control, planning and logistics, working team and life support. They met professionals in various fields and heard from four different astronauts during the experience. “I’ve done many programs, and this was by far my favorite,” said Rae. “It helped me understand that I definitely want to be an engineer, and it was a great experience.” The program is open to high school juniors across the state of Idaho. You can find our more information or submit an application online at SDE.Idaho.gov/academic/isas.

Go Badgers!
SAM GORTON: “We all have dreams. In order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort.” – Jesse Owens, Olympic Gold-Medalist A JUNIOR AT BONNERS Ferry High School, Sam Gorton has already made his mark in cross country and track. He has varsity letters in both sports and has received many medals and ribbons for his accomplishments. Sam shared that he also enjoys running in local fun runs throughout the summer. But it is not just in athletics that he is successful; Sam has also been on the honor roll every semester. When asked what his favorite thing about running is, he said it is the sense of competition: “The nerves that you feel on the starting line and that feeling of running the race knowing you gave it [your] all.” So when he suffered an injury to his tendon last year, it was extremely difficult to sit by and just watch. And while it was hard, that experience also taught him an important lesson.
With just under two years left in his high school career, Sam said his most memorable moment to date was a race in Libby last season where he set his personal best in the 3-mile run. “I remember having so much fun and the competitive nature of that run." After high school, Sam said he hopes to continue to run at the collegiate level. Although he has yet to decide where, he said he is looking at smaller schools such as Lewis and Clark State College. Until then, keep your eye out for this young athlete. He will continue to make his mark in Bonners Ferry when it comes to cross country and track. Keep up the good work, Sam!

BONNERS FERRY’S HIDDEN TREASURE The Pearl Theater
By Alison Henslee
IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO THE PEARL THEATER for any given performance, you might not realize what an aptly-named gem of a place you’re missing out on! Housed inside a former church on Ash Street near Downtown Bonners Ferry, The Pearl Theater has been beautifully refurbished with amazing acoustics and incredible detail. But aside from being aesthetically pleasing, the real treasure is the continual string of fine performances that are offered. Pearl Theater Board President Rhea Verbanic explains, “We strive to book events at The Pearl in a variety of genres so that it will appeal to a broader audience. Our goal is to offer more options to choose from so that more people will take the opportunity to come see what great entertainment we offer right here in town.” The caliber of performances are truly impressive; attendees comment

frequently that shows at The Pearl compare to—or exceed—those in Spokane, at a fraction of the price. “There are also opportunities to check out a new performer that you might not have heard of, always at a very affordable cost,” Verbanic adds. The Pearl Theater is offering a special five-show package for the 20172018 season at $65 for members and $70 for non-members. Members were offered an early bird discount on the package, so plan on becoming a supporter of The Pearl and take advantage of that next year. The season lineup is exceptional. It kicks off with Grammy-nominated performer Randy McAllister and the Scrappiest Band in the Motherland, who are returning (at his request!) for their third performance at The Pearl on Saturday, September 30. With music described as East Texas roadhouse soul, Randy’s entertainment style is just like his home state—

large! Accompanied in the past by two guitarists and a violinist, Randy plays drums, washboard and harmonica—sometimes all at once—and performs lead vocals. Opening for Randy is local performer Nancy Meadows. This is one concert you don’t want to miss! Many requests for a comedian to perform at The Pearl have been made, and the next act brings it on. Comedian Paul Brantly, seen on L.A.’s “Rebels of Comedy,” will perform his show “Comedy for Adults” on Saturday, October 14. Bonners Ferry’s Melayne Stevens, a regular performer, will share the stage with Brantly with her brand of comedy. October is a bonus month with an encore show. The Andy Sydow Band will take the stage on Saturday, October 21, along with local stars Paul Bonnell and Friends. Here’s a chance to experience great rock and roll along with some talented local musicians. While not part of the five-show lineup, the Shook Twins are a big tradition at The Pearl with their annual day-after-Thanksgiving concert. Performing across the county, they're gaining quite a following, and their

local fan base is strong. The Bonners Ferry show always sells out quickly, so buy your tickets for the November 24 event as soon as they go on sale. Next on The Pearl’s lineup is the Incredible Flying Dookie Brothers (oldtime rock and roll) on Saturday, January 27. The ToneDevil Brothers (folk music with Arvid Lundin) are playing April 21. And the season concludes with the Panhandle Polecats performing all-in-the-family bluegrass on May 5. Every performance at The Pearl starts at 7pm, with The Pearl Café opening at 6pm to serve a variety of delicious finger foods and desserts, along with beer, wine, coffee and other beverages as well. For free entertainment, there are two regular events: Open Mic Night on the first Thursday of every month and Performer’s Circle on the last Friday of each month. Anyone who sings or play instruments is welcome at both. Open Mic has room for poetry readings, comedy routine and more. For additional shows and events, more details, ticket prices and times, check out The Pearl’s website, ThePearlTheater.org, or join their
Facebook page for notifications. Tickets can be bought online, at Bonners Books or Mountain Mikes, and at the door (if tickets are still available). With general ticket prices averaging $12 to $15, Pearl shows are a great deal. “Figure the cost of a show in Spokane, along with gas and food; this is a more affordable way to see and support the performing arts, and it’s right here in Bonners Ferry,” Verbanic says. “Plus, if you have dinner out or appetizers and drinks at The Pearl Café prior to a show, you're supporting not only The Pearl but other local business people as well. Your money stays at home.” Memberships help keep quality acts coming to The Pearl. With tiers from general to corporate, a purchase of $25 to $500 (discounted prices for seniors and military personnel) will give you a nice variety of benefits. General members receive voting privileges, one Café Buck coupon and member punch card. The corporate package has that plus three more Café Bucks, four free Pearl-sponsored event tickets and your name and logo on every program. The punch card is a reward system for
members; attend a show, buy tickets for a guest, volunteer or attend a meeting, and receive one stamp on the card. After five stamps, members earn a free ticket to a Pearl-sponsored event and a Café Buck. Make a note to attend the Pilsner, Pinot and The Pearl membership drive event next September (as this year’s event has already taken place). This popular wine and beer walk through participating Bonners Ferry businesses is a great way to socialize and bring more awareness to what The Pearl Theater has to offer. And another not-to-miss happening at The Pearl is the festive New Year’s Eve party with dancing and celebration of the New Year’s Eve ball dropping in Times Square. Formal wear is welcomed but certainly not required; do think about joining in the fun though with an upcycled gown from the thrift store or your dad’s old sports jacket.
meeting, held the second Thursday of every month from 5:30 to 7pm. “Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to run The Pearl,” Verbanic explains. Volunteers are needed for everything from easy jobs (ticket taking, information table attendants, cafe servers and poster hanging) to more complex duties (poster design, data entry, sound system and lighting tech). Volunteers receive free or discounted passes to most shows. Whatever your preference in music, plays or comedy might be, The Pearl Theater is sure to offer something that will meet or exceed all expectations. Enjoy the luxury and convenience of having local music, a variety of concerts, plays and movies to choose from and being able to enjoy them in one of the finest settings that Bonners Ferry is privileged to offer.
Anyone interested in what’s happening behind the scenes is encouraged to attend the monthly Backstage at The Pearl board/volunteer

Home Office THE BENEFITS OF WORKING FROM HOME By Jani Gonzalez
B
ack in 2010, the company I was working for on the East Coast did a pilot study on working from home. They work with sensitive information which naturally made them reticent to having employees working remotely. But when they established a secure way to connect from home, they first allowed employees with seven or more years of tenure to work from home one day a week. Not even a year later, they allowed all employees to work one day a week from home. They established clear rules, schedules and trained workers. It made a huge difference in our work weeks as there was at least one day we didn’t have to trek in.
The Post credited that increase in engagement to better Internet connectivity and ease in videoconferencing. Companies are seeing the benefits and helping their employees make the transition. This workplace trend is not just a U.S. one either. FlexJobs, one of the more renowned telecommuting job boards, reported that the U.K., Saudi Arabia, Japan and Turkey have companies taking measures to allow more flexible work schedules. Turkey’s government has passed policies protecting telecommuting workers from discrimination. Toyota in Japan is allowing one-third of its workers to work remotely. Living Local publisher, Steve Russo, manages several magazine brands, which a staff of 15 operates from their homes spanning Washington and Northern Idaho.
On a larger scale since then, working from home has become more commonplace and no longer the role of a self-employed business owner. Telecommuting jobs are moving away from the scam aspect (“Make thousands from home!”) and into a legitimate way to work for corporations. The ubiquity of technology has made it possible for us to work remotely from home. Though technology has blurred the lines between home and work in some way, it’s a trade many of us are willing to make in return for an easier commute and improved worklife balance.
“We set out to create a flexible, creative workspace that fostered professional growth,” said Russo. He cited only one negative, which is the loss of in-office collaboration, but noted several benefits, a major one being the ability to obtain talent regardless of location.“We allow our employees to set their own schedules. If we have to ask for checkins, then that person isn’t a self-starter to begin with, and we only want people that push themselves,” Russo said.
Gallup Poll reports on more happy at-home workers
Motivation and the ability to work autonomously are important prerequisites. If a company is going to trust employees to work from home, those workers need to maintain and show their productivity.
A recent Gallup Poll published earlier this year showed an uptick in the number of people working from home. The Washington Post reported that 43 percent of the 7,000 people surveyed work from home, an increase of 4 percent since the last poll in 2012. The poll also showed that people are working more days from home too—between three and four days from home. The workers who spent more time working remotely from home were reported as being the happiest and most engaged in their work.

Careers ripe for telecommuting Every year, FlexJobs, one of the more well-known job boards, publishes a list of the top-100 companies that offer remote positions to their employees. The 2017 list includes notable companies as Amazon, IBM,

collaborate Xerox and several government departments such as the Department of Agriculture (No. 18) and the U.S. Department of State (No. 52). FlexJobs also reported that many careers applicable for telecommuting were professional-grade jobs where most workers held a bachelor’s degree and worked half of their work week from home. They too reported an increase in remote workers: 56 percent in 2016, up from 50 percent in 2014. High-level careers that lend themselves to telecommuting include: computing and information technology fields, engineering and architecture, medicine and health, government and finance, customer service, virtual assistance, transcription services, graphic design, and training and sales. Don’t quit your day job yet! While workplaces are recognizing the benefits of working from home, telecommuting jobs aren’t out for grabs. It’s best to search for a job you’re qualified for and inquire about telecommuting possibilities as opposed to solely searching for a remote job. Many positions require communicating through a messaging board no matter how autonomous workers are left to accomplish their tasks. In spite of the growing acceptance of viable telecommuting positions, there are many temporary jobs that pay but may be less viable in terms of a having a sustainable, steady job. Scan Craigslist or other job boards and you’ll find work-from-home jobs calling for survey takers, English tutors, website testers, data entry, writers and editors, email or chat support positions, and search engine evaluators. (If you are curious, desperate or looking for a range of experience, some jobs range from game testing to searching for broken links on websites.) These jobs typically don’t include benefits and offer only short working stints. Freelancing and the gig economy More people, however, are opting for short-term work in addition to full-time employment or retirement. These individuals work shortterm jobs either out of need, income supplement or pure passion. Globalization and improved technology have validated the freelance worker. Over the years, there has been an uptick in the number of individuals freelancing (also known as on-demand work). In 2016, Intuit (makers of TurboTax) and Emergent Research conducted a study in which they noted 3.7 million people in the U.S. freelance. Their goal was to understand the behaviors of this population. In part, the recession of 2008 forced some people to find work however they could. On the other side of the telecommuting pendulum, the strengthening
BonnersFerryLivingLocal.com
22
of the economy since then has given another segment of workers the financial confidence to let go of full-time work in favor of freelancing. Forbes reported on the study and noted, “For a large number of participants in this labor market, signing up with on-demand platforms is an offensive move aimed at gaining greater financial security and/or greater satisfaction and control in their professional lives.” Freelancing means freedom. Tasks change and individuals can pick and choose what jobs to take. Understandably, this is easier said than done. For anyone who has attempted freelancing full time, landing jobs can be time consuming and full of tests, searching and vetting and also the challenge of fulfilling your client requests. A more practical way to find freelance work is to specialize in a certain area, instead of trying to fit every job requirement exactly. While flexible jobs are growing, stitching together enough jobs to make a living off it alone takes time and may be difficult for some. Study participants listed that as one of their top challenges. So, while financial instability is a part of freelancing, it is more reliable as a supplement to full-time work. Tips and tricks of the flexible trades Working from home has come into acceptance in recent years, but for a long time it wasn’t an option except for a select few. Tradition and also trust have arguably kept companies and people in the 9-to-5 grind. That said, keeping the trust of those who hire you is important in getting more work. Checking in regularly is important as well as keeping a consistent schedule. Freelance jobs, though temporary, may keep you accountable for the length a job takes to complete. Many remote jobs will ask for an estimate of time and rate per job. You’ll have to become adept at estimating how long a project will take to complete, keeping in mind a margin for error. “One tip is that you must be able to understand intimately the various
projects, what they take and how long they take to complete. Let’s face it, as many as there are honest hard workers, there are those that exist to try and ‘get one over.’ Therefore, if you know that it takes X amount of hours to do such and such, and you have an employee that is taking double the time, you have an issue,” said Denise Supplee. Supplee has made a living as a realtor with Long & Foster, operations director at SparkRental and educator at Snaplandlord. Realtors have long been able to establish their own schedules, which she did while she launched Snaplandlord. To protect yourself and to know what’s expected of you, ask for a contract or something in writing (an email could suffice) about the workload. Last, keep in mind that you are responsible for your taxes, as freelance jobs typically do not set that aside for you. Get good tools. Do your research and find tools to help you manage and keep track of your billable time. Tools like the HiveDesk have calendars, task lists and discussion boards to communicate with your virtual team. Google has a similar tool. Or, use a good old-fashion spreadsheet. Whatever you choose, be diligent so you can properly invoice and be compensated. Where the virtual jobs are If you’re ready to become one of the 350,000 Americans that Forbes has cited doing on-demand work, again, do your research. There are

many job boards where some postings might be too good to be true. Try vetting companies before applying. A good place to start looking for freelance work are job boards such as FlexJobs, Upwork, Guru, Indeed and Real Ways to Earn Money Online. Consider also emailing companies you’d like to work for and networking on LinkedIn through friends and coworkers. Similar to LinkedIn is WAHspace, which is specifically geared to remote workers. Remote work benefits employers and workers As commutes lengthen and people live farther away from major cities, working remotely is a win for both companies and workers—whether full-time or on a freelance basis. It saves time commuting, which in turn reduces carbon emissions and also saves on the overhead costs of housing employees on a job site. And, finally, it gives workers a chance to be closer to family—even if it means working outside of the 9-to-5 schedule.

Prepare Your Body For The Workout By Petra Timmermans, PT Boundary Community Hospital Rehabilitation Services Manager FALL IS A BUSY SEASON for Boundary County residents preparing for winter. The physical therapists in the Rehabilitation Department at Boundary Community Hospital routinely treat injuries that are related to activities around the house this time of year. Cutting, splitting and stacking wood: People can easily hurt their backs; wood is heavy and is usually on the ground. Avoid twisting when lifting and stacking wood. Turn with a straight body using your legs. Use a good chopping technique to avoid back or shoulder injuries and consider alternatives: rolling, tipping wood on its high side and be careful with chainsaws.
Pulling up the garden: Weed/plant pulling is hard on your back and knees. Divide this chore over several days. Sit on your knees or use a chair for some of the pulling. Outside painting: Limit overhead painting to avoid neck and shoulder strain. Adjust the ladder, use a scaffold and try to paint at eye level or lower. Cleaning gutters or picking and gathering fruit: Overreaching when cleaning gutters or picking fruit can hurt your shoulder or back. Move your ladder often, making sure it has stable footing before you climb, and

always have the ladder or a branch to hold on to. Never stand on the top step. Raking leaves: To prevent back and buttock strain from twisting and rotating repetitively in the same direction, switch sides and use the rake in the other hand. Better yet, use a leaf blower. Pruning: Pruning overhead with force puts the rotator cuff muscles in the shoulder at high risk for injury. Use a good-quality pruner that can telescope. Hand pruners/ clippers strain wrists and hands. Take breaks to stretch your wrists and fingers. Many injuries can be prevented with preparation and attention. Here are some additional tips: • Take some deep breaths before beginning to oxygenate the blood and help focus on the task.

• Stretch. Stretching out your muscles and doing a quick warm-up will loosen up muscles in preparation for your chores. • Be prepared. Have your tools close by and at the right height, have stable footing and/or a steady ladder. Be positioned so you aren’t reaching too high or too low.

• Remember to lift with your legs, not your back. • Carry items close to your body at waist height. • Don’t twist while lifting or carrying. Turn your whole body by moving your feet. • Don’t overload your arms, shovel, wheelbarrow or whatever you carry. It may take more trips, but your back will thank you. • Rotate activities. Rake leaves for a while, carry wood for a while, etc. • Use the right tools for the right job. Don’t prune big branches with a small clipper or small branches with a heavy pruner. • Don’t throw or swing anything heavy, such as logs and hay. Pain-free movement is crucial to your quality of daily life, ability to earn a living, the pursuit of leisure activities and much more, so please be careful when you begin your fall chores in preparation for winter. Physical therapists can improve mobility and motion as well as long-term pain management. Talk with your physician about all the ways a physical therapist can help.

Kick Off To Football! Interview with Coach Cory Kramer By Patty Hutchens Photos by Jason Duchow Photography IN HIS THIRD YEAR AS head coach for the Bonners Ferry varsity football team, Coach Cory Kramer is looking forward to building a team that will be with him for more than just a year. “We are a pretty inexperienced varsity team, so we really need to catch the younger guys up to the varsity level,” said Coach Kramer of what he sees as the biggest challenge this season. Last year, seniors made up two-thirds of the team with 20 seniors, 16 of whom were returning starters last fall. While the team went 1-8, Coach Kramer is optimistic that they will improve on their record. This year’s team is comprised of 13 seniors, seven juniors, 15 sophomores and 19 freshmen. “We have seven returning starters,” said Kramer, who adds that
their passing game is what he believes will be the biggest strength of the team this season. While football is a team sport, there are some players that Coach Kramer said will want to be on people’s radars. He named quarterback Chris Sabin, running back Anthony Minor, Allen Rios, Donavan Varelman, wide receiver Brady Bateman, Shane Walker, Jake Jelinek and Ryan Mason. Their schedule includes opponents St. Maries, Thompson Falls, Priest River, Timberlake and Kellogg, all of which will be difficult in Coach Kramer’s eyes. “That’s why you play the game,” he said. “There are no easy wins!” Coach Kramer has been coaching football
“
As a coach, he hopes to instill in these young men the ability to take something positive from the game of football and transition that into everyday life to help them be successful.

GOOD NEWS BY ALISON HENSLEE PHOTOS COURTESY OF SARAH JENKINS
BONNERS FERRY HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS
THERE’S SOMEWHAT of a preconceived notion that high school cheerleaders just put on cute uniforms, make themselves pretty and show up to all the games. But after talking to Bonners Ferry High School cheer coach, Sarah Jenkins, that notion gets thrown right out the window! With 14 girls on this year’s squad, she has her hands full keeping up with them as their days are filled with school, homework, practices, cheering and any extracurricular activities they participate in. Managing a cheer team is a lot of work, but Sarah enjoys all of it. “I chose to be a cheer coach because we had just returned to Bonners Ferry, and being a BFHS cheerleader in high school, I
“I am so proud of how hard [all of our girls] work throughout the year to cheer on their fellow classmates, all the while keeping their grades above the expected minimum,” said Sarah.
thought it was a great way to become part of the community,” said Sarah. This year, she has help; former BFHS dance team member, Kayla Hawks, is helping out as her assistant coach. Cheer season begins on July 1 with voluntary practices. In August, they start two-a-day practices, with mandatory attendance at the 6:30am practice. During fair week, the team volunteers in the dining hall for the Badger Boosters. Once school is in session, the girls practice Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6pm, with games every Friday. They also cheer at any extra home games, usually scheduled on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Last year, they performed at 27 games. Several of the girls are in Leadership and National Honor Society. Nearly all of the senior girls are taking college classes in addition to their typical high school studies. “I am so proud of how hard [all of our girls] work throughout the year to cheer on their fellow classmates, all the while keeping their grades above the expected minimum,” said Sarah. Now two-and-a-half seasons in, she feels this will be their best year as there is a strong number of experienced cheerleaders

to help build the team’s skill levels even higher. Once winter rolls around, the cheer team is at all home basketball games, wrestling matches and as many away games as they can make it to—all the while practicing for their own competitions. Last year, the team took first in Pom at Districts, earning a trip to the state competition. Thirty minutes before their state performance, they found that the scoring requirements had been changed, and they didn’t qualify to place. They went on to put on a perfect performance, and Sarah said they’ll be ready next year. When asked what makes her most proud of her squad, Sarah replied, “My favorite part of coaching is seeing the girls grow together as a team and the excitement on their faces when they nail their routine at competition. It gives me chills, even makes me cry. It makes me so happy to see them succeed.” Another part of the cheer team’s busy schedule is fundraising and volunteering. Fundraising monies are used to help offset the costs for new uniforms, tumbling mats for practices and any other needs the team
might have. This past May, the squad held a daylong car wash in the Columbia Bank parking lot; their efforts paid off as the team raised $750. Currently they are selling Little Caesar’s Pizza Kits for $21 to $25, depending on the toppings. Order online at PizzaKit.com and use group number 337605 before September 28, and the girls will deliver the kits after they arrive on October 7.
General and Family Dentistry Hank Willis, DDS “Gentle Dental Care for the Entire Family”
They also have rally scarves available for $5; the material was donated by Margaret Mellett, owner of Alley Fabric Nook, and assembled by a team member’s mother, Stephanie Sims. In blue, white and gray fleece, these scarves represent school colors and can be used to wave when the home team scores. The biggest fundraiser that the cheer squad holds is the semi-formal Winter Dance; this gives their fellow BFHS classmates a great reason to dress up and socialize in the middle of winter. The girls sell tickets, do the decorating, gather refreshment donations from local businesses and take care of all the details to make it a memorable event. The team also loves to be actively involved in their community. In years past, they've hosted day-long Cheer Camps for elementary grade students; camp students then perform at that night’s football game. The BFHS dance team is hosting this year’s camp due to a shortage of home football games, but the cheer squad plans to resume it next year. The cheerleaders also volunteer in the Badger Boosters’ food booth at the Pack Rat’s Holiday Vintage Sale. In addition, they share their Badger pride in most community parades, leading the way in team spirit, especially during the Homecoming Parade. The cheer team appreciates the support they receive back from the community. Sarah gives credit to Pro-X Building Supply for donating materials for cheer boxes, Brad and Kelly Navarro for building the boxes, and Vinyl Expressions for lettering to decorate with after the cheer team painted the boxes. Safeway and Super One generously donate refreshments for the Winter Formal. And the support they appreciate the most? Having all the fans in the stands helping them cheer on their beloved BFHS teams.

Idaho
I’M TRAVELING, USUALLY on an airplane, when someone asks: “Where are you from?” “Idaho.” I reply. “You live in Idaho? I didn’t know people actually live there! Isn’t that, like, just a big field of potatoes?” What can I say? Maybe this perception is good for us. We live in a beautiful place and enjoy our solitude. On the other hand, we are blessed to be surrounded by beautiful landscapes and hearty people. It’s not all potatoes. Next time you’re in my shoes, here are a few places worth telling people about: McCall is surrounded by the Payette National Forest and wraps around the bottom of Payette Lake. Like many places in Idaho, the drive alone is worth the trip. Out of Boise, you head up 55, the Payette River Scenic Byway. The town is home to resorts, museums, restaurants and Ponderosa State Park, and is a center for Idaho-style recreation. I remember hearing McCall gets more snow than any other place in Idaho! And, there is no shortage of activities near McCall during the winter. Burgdorf Mountain hosts

all sorts of activities, from skiing to snowshoeing, snowcat adventures to snow tubing. Burgdorf Hot Springs are accessible only by snowmobile in the winter, but you can drive in during the temperate seasons. After Memorial Day, McCall is an epic summer kind of town. The Selkirk Loop is a 280-mile stretch of road winding through Washington, Idaho and British Columbia. If you could choose one thing in this article to do, make it the Selkirk Loop. Along the way, you can enjoy just about everything you can imagine encountering in this part of the world. There are rivers, lakes and mountains—plenty of scenic views. As with McCall, the drive alone is worth the trip. But, with a little bit of planning, you can find great places to stay, eat, shop and find adventure. In any season, you are sure to find the outdoor experience you are looking for along the way. Horseshoe Bend is a rural town about 30 minutes outside of Boise. Swimming, fishing, whitewater rafting, train rides and mountain biking are among the activities to be enjoyed there. The main attraction, in my humble opinion, is Zip Idaho—epic zipline and heli zipping! Yes, I said heli zipping, as in the combination of a zipline and a helicopter. The city of Cascade, Idaho, celebrates their centennial this year. Surely their staying power is a testament to

the gorgeous setting. The town sits on the southeast end of Lake Cascade, or the Cascade Reservoir. The lake is a great place for camping, hiking, biking, swimming, boating and fishing. Cascade is also close to Brundage Mountain, offering more hiking and biking trails or skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the winter, and Gold Fork Hot Springs in Donnelly, Idaho. Shoshone Falls is associated with the town of Twin Falls. The falls are in the Shoshone Falls Park on the Snake River. Twin Falls and the Snake River have a lot to offer and should not be overlooked as destinations in themselves. The real prize here, however, is Shoshone Falls. Believe it or not, Shoshone Falls are taller than Niagara falls by 45 feet (212’ to 167’), and, if my math is correct, Shoshone Falls is within the top 20 tallest falls in the United States. What they lack in height compared to some others they make up for in breadth!
Perhaps in contrast to the well-known Sawtooth Mountains, the lesser-known Mullan Trail deserves a mention. Anyone who remembers the old Oregon Trail computer game knows what a hard business it is to make it this far West in a wagon. Diphtheria and botched river crossings are just a few of the problems early settlers faced. The Mullan Road was constructed by the U.S. Army under the command of Lieutenant John Mullan. It enabled passage for the first wagon trains into the Pacific Northwest. Today, the route is traced by Interstate 90, but not exactly. That is to say, there is no way of knowing the exact route of the original Mullan Road. Part of the adventure here is to check out what lies just off the route and to attempt to piece together the puzzle yourself.
It seems a list of places to visit in Idaho would not be complete without the Sawtooth Mountains. There is a pair of infamous towns close by-Sun Valley and Ketchum. You may know them as favored spots for the rich and famous, or, speaking of Ketchum in particular, as the last place Ernest Hemingway drew breath before taking his own life. The area is charged and the reason for attraction varies. One thing is for sure, the Sawtooth Mountains are a must see! Whether you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, arts and activities, lose yourself in the backcountry or slip quietly through the region along the Sawtooth Scenic Byway, the Sawtooth Mountains will not disappoint. There is so much to do in and around the mountains; I can safely recommend them as a destination for anyone with a pulse.
Lastly, there's Lake Pend Oreille! Some of you are thinking, “Huh?” You’re right. Many readers live around this lake and already love it. But, how often do we become acquainted with only one aspect of something we love? And when we learn that something we love has a different dimension and something new to offer us, how much more do we love it? That is the challenge. There is some part of this breathtaking, 148-square-mile lake you haven’t tried. Search out a new beach or landing, find a different swimming hole, go out on a kayak, try a stand-up paddle board, ski, wakeboard, pontoon—whatever you are used to doing, shake it up a bit.
CRATERS OF THE MOON
Hells Canyon is a national recreation area in Riggins, Idaho. This canyon runs between Idaho and Oregon and is the deepest river gorge in North America! The area offers opportunities for scenic viewing, fishing, whitewater rafting and hiking. For those interested in taking in the sites of the region, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway weaves along the Snake River to the Hells Canyon Dam. For scenic views, check out the Buckhorn, Hat point and Hells Canyon overlooks. For those seeking a view from the river, there are guided tours and other opportunities to get out on the water.
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is aptly named. The area encompasses more than 1,000 square miles and incorporates three separate lava fields. You will be hardpressed to find a better preserved area like it, showcasing the aftermath of volcanic activity. The result is a harsh but breathtaking landscape that is, as the name suggests, otherworldly. It is said that NASA used this area to prepare astronauts for the earliest moon landing. They later determined that the surface of our moon is very different. Whatever the case, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is readily accessible and has plenty of atmosphere. Hiking and cave exploration are excellent activities in the temperate months. In the winter, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS QUILTS ON DISPLAY
Share your love of quilting. By Colin Anderson. NORTH IDAHO IS HOME to some very talented quilters, and you’ll be able to see many of their amazing pieces of work up close and personal at the third annual quilt show. The event will take place on Saturday, October 14, from 9am to 4pm at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Admission is just $3 with children 12 and younger free. The quilt show is put together by a group of local quilt enthusiasts and sponsored by the Boundary Country Fair Board. “As a committee, our favorite thing about this event is to see the great talent this community shares in the world of quilting. Getting to know other quilters and working together has been great,” said Jodi Stoddard, quilt board member. The event saw 164 quilts displayed last year and is expecting even more this time around. While most of the quilts are for display only, there will be a few for sale. Several local quilters will also be donating their handmade pieces to local organizations who distribute them to individuals in need. According to Stoddard, these include: the ECF wing of the hospital, Hope House, local veterans, NAMI for mental health, Hospice of Bonners Ferry and Quilts Beyond Borders.
HIGHLIGHT EVENT
If you would like to display a piece at the show, there is still time to enter. Those who would like to share a quilt or wall hanging can pick up a quilt entry form from any of the quilt shops in town. You can also ask for a copy to be emailed to you by contacting Jodi at jodistoddard@gmail.com. There is no entry fee. All the information needed to share is on this form. Quilts can take months or sometimes years to complete, and you’ll be amazed by the attention to detail and creativity at this year’s show. Don’t miss it!
