Steve Novotny, the team leader, attributes his work ethic to his parents, who instilled in him the values of hard work and dedication from a young age. “Hard work and effort have always caught my attention,” he shares. “From when I was young till now, the similar work ethic of my parents inspired me. Whether it was my mom staying up late for ER patients at Kootenai Health or my dad teaching us to cut firewood on the same day he ran CT scans and X-rays for patients at the same hospital, ‘giving your all’ became being an adult.”
Steve found his passion for the mortgage industry while in college and is celebrating his 14th year in the business. Over the past decade, his team has helped thousands of families with their home financing needs. Their dedication has earned them recognition as one of the top mortgage lenders in
the country by Scotsman’s Guide, and they have been the top mortgage lender in North Idaho since 2018.

Hot topics for the summer months
by T HOMAS WILLIAMS
As temperatures soar, so does the activity in the housing market. From essential tips for homebuyers looking to make their dream home a reality to successful strategies for sellers aiming to capitalize on the summer selling season; whether you’re a firsttime homebuyer eager to embark on your journey to homeownership or a seasoned seller seeking to maximize your property’s appeal, you’ll find valuable insights and advice to guide you every step of the way.
HOMEBUYERS
Navigating the Homebuying Journey with Confidence
To set yourself up for success when buying a new home, start by defining your needs, preferences and budget clearly. Research neighborhoods, schools, amenities and property values to narrow down your options effectively. Get pre-approved for a mortgage to strengthen your offer and streamline the buying process. Partner with a knowledgeable and reputable real estate agent who understands your goals and advocates for your best interests. Attend open houses and schedule private viewings to assess properties thoroughly. Conduct thorough inspections and consider potential resale value. Stay organized, patient and flexible throughout the process, understanding that finding the perfect home may take time. Lastly, trust your instincts and don’t settle for a property that doesn’t meet your criteria. With careful planning, diligence and guidance from professionals, you can navigate the homebuying journey confidently and achieve your homeownership goals.
Why Seeing a Home in Person Matters
In today’s digital age, virtual tours and online listings offer convenience, but nothing beats experiencing a home in person before making an offer. Visiting a property allows you to assess its true condition, ambiance and neighborhood vibe firsthand. You can gauge factors like natural light, room sizes and overall layout that might not translate accurately in photos or videos. Additionally, being physically present enables you to ask questions, address concerns and envision yourself living in the space. By taking the time to tour a home in person, you can make a more informed decision, ensuring that it meets your needs and preferences before committing to a purchase. It’s a vital step in the home-buying process that can ultimately save you time, money and disappointment down the road.
Prime Time for Homebuyers
Buying a house presents numerous advantages for prospective homeowners.
In the summer of 2024, buying a house presents numerous advantages for prospective homeowners. Firstly, the warmer months often coincide with increased inventory and market activity, providing buyers with a wider selection of properties to choose from. Additionally, favorable weather conditions make it easier to conduct home inspections and assess outdoor features such as landscaping and curb appeal. Moreover, historically low mortgage rates continue to offer favorable financing options for buyers, maximizing affordability. With longer daylight hours and a sense of optimism in the air, now is an opportune time for buyers to make their move into homeownership, capitalizing on favorable market conditions and ample choices.
Updated Windows Bring Value Beyond Aesthetics
When hunting for a new home, don’t overlook the significance of updated windows. While they contribute to the home’s visual appeal, their benefits extend far beyond mere aesthetics. Modern windows offer superior insulation, sealing out drafts and maintaining a comfortable interior climate year-round. This not only enhances your living experience but also leads to noticeable savings on heating and cooling bills. Additionally, energy-efficient windows often come with features like UV protection and sound insulation, adding further value to your investment. When evaluating potential properties, prioritize those with updated windows to ensure long-term comfort, energy efficiency and cost savings. Remember, the benefits of updated windows extend well beyond initial impressions; they are a crucial component of a home’s functionality and financial value.
Assessing your financial situation and future plans can help you determine the optimal timing for your home purchase.
Timing is Everything
While buying a home is an exciting milestone, there are instances when it might not be the best time for you to take the plunge. Financial instability, such as a low credit score or high debt-toincome ratio, can hinder your ability to secure a favorable mortgage rate or afford monthly payments. Additionally, if you anticipate a major life change, such as a career move or starting a family, it may be wise to wait until your circumstances stabilize. Market conditions, such as inflated housing prices or limited inventory, can also make it challenging to find a suitable property within your budget. Taking the time to assess your financial situation and future plans can help you determine the optimal timing for your home purchase.
HOME SELLERS
Summer Selling:
Making
Moves in the Sun
Selling your house during the summer months brings a host of benefits in today’s dynamic real estate market. With longer days and sunny skies, your property shines, attracting more eager buyers. Summer’s bustling activity and heightened demand often lead to faster sales and competitive offers, helping you secure a favorable deal. Families, in particular, are keen to settle before the new school year, expanding your potential buyer pool. Furthermore, persistently low housing inventory levels drive up prices, offering sellers the chance to maximize their returns. Don’t miss out on this prime selling season — leverage these summer months to showcase your home and achieve a successful sale.
Successful Strategies for Selling Your Home
To set yourself up for success when selling your home, start by preparing your property to make a lasting impression. Declutter, depersonalize and stage your home to showcase its full potential and appeal to potential buyers. Work with a reputable real estate agent who understands the local market and can develop a tailored marketing strategy to attract qualified buyers. Price your home competitively based on comparable sales and current market conditions to generate interest and offers. Maximize curb appeal to create a positive first impression and consider making minor repairs or updates to enhance the overall appeal. Be flexible and responsive to buyer feedback and offers, and maintain open communication with your agent throughout the selling process. By taking these proactive steps and leveraging the expertise of professionals, you can increase your chances of selling your home quickly and for the best possible price.

Hot Home Features That Make
a Cool Impression!
When selling your home during the warmer months, accentuate special touches like outdoor fans, air conditioning, sprinkler systems, ceiling fans and strategic window shades. These features enhance comfort, showcasing your property as a sanctuary from the heat. Outdoor fans on covered decks create inviting spaces for relaxation and entertainment, while interior ceiling fans maintain airflow. Highlighting air conditioning and efficient windows communicates temperature control and energy savings. A sprinkler system signals low-maintenance landscaping, while window shades balance natural light and heat. By emphasizing these details, you not only elevate your home’s appeal but also demonstrate thoughtful design, enhancing its desirability during the summer market.

Summer Tips:
Highlight Your Home’s Outdoor Amenities
Highlighting a home’s outdoor amenities, such as patios and decks, pools and garden areas, as well as scenic views, is pivotal in portraying its potential for enjoyable summer living to prospective buyers. These features extend living space, providing areas for relaxation, entertainment and recreation during warm months. Patios and pools offer venues for outdoor gatherings and leisure activities, while well-maintained garden areas enhance aesthetics and tranquility. Scenic views contribute to ambiance and serenity, enriching the overall living experience. By showcasing these outdoor amenities, sellers effectively communicate the lifestyle opportunities the property affords, appealing to buyers seeking a harmonious blend of indoor comfort and outdoor enjoyment during the summer season.

Buying Before Selling
Buying a house before selling yours offers advantages with strategic planning. Explore bridge loans or home equity lines of credit to cover the down payment. Negotiate a rent-back agreement with the seller for extra time to sell your current home. Work closely with a real estate agent for expert guidance. Maximize your market appeal by preparing your current home for sale. This approach allows you to secure your new home without the pressure of timing the sale of your current property. You can take advantage of favorable market conditions and potentially avoid temporary housing arrangements. With careful financial planning and support from professionals, buying before selling can be a successful strategy.

Alder + Stone Interiors
Design Inspired by Nature:
Where rustic meets modern
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Ronniesha Rivera’s passion for interior design was first sparked while in high school after “randomly” taking an upper-level drafting class, where fell in love with interior design from a drafting / floor plan standpoint.
“I loved ‘solving the puzzle’ if you will. That’s all design really is … identifying a problem and creating a solution. Being a type-A kind of gal, I loved that aspect of it all,” Ronniesha recalls.
Her journey in interior design began at Washington State University, where she gained her bachelor’s degree in interior design in 2019. Following graduation, Ronniesha worked for a few local firms as a junior designer, where she found herself constantly wanting more — more responsibility, more autonomy and more opportunities to hone her skill. In 2021, she founded Alder and Stone Interiors (formerly Studio Eight Interiors). “April 3 marked three years in business, and it has been the best thing I have ever done,” she smiles. “It takes so much hard work and dedication to run a business, but the benefits and joy that come from it are exponential.”
Alder and Stone is a full-service interior design firm for families “who want to get intentional about the spaces they live in,” focusing on new builds, large-scale remodels and furniture projects. Ronniesha has worked in the residential area of interior
design but more recently has focused her attention to cottages, cabins and lodges in North Idaho.
Specializing in elevated mountain living, Alder and Stone is where rustic meets modern living. “Commonly when people think of rustic interiors, they think of dark, wood-filled spaces with animal heads everywhere. But I really wanted to take the concept of ‘rustic’ and clean it up a bit. Add some flare. Maybe some pops of gold. Some glam and other modern elements,” she shares. “I really strive to design in a way where we take aspects of nature such as materials and color schemes and apply them in a way that elevates the room, completely rethinking and redefining rustic interiors. A lot of our interiors are located in Northern Idaho, and it’s just fitting that we pull so much inspiration from nature.”
One recent project that Ronniesha found truly special was the North Garden Lodge for Lutherhaven Ministries, which was completed late last year. The overarching design concept of the 10,000-square-foot rentable lodge was to bridge the gap between the 75-year-old camp with the new space. As Ronniesha explains, “We wanted to keep the look and feel of the existing structures on site but also bring the new lodge up to date and have it stand out a bit. For example, we took some of
the kelly green color from the existing buildings, brought the color shade down a bit and found a really beautiful moss green that was a bit more modern. We also focused on bringing the outdoors inside. To achieve that, we did huge glass sliding doors the lead directly out to the back decks — when the doors are open, you literally feel like you are sitting outside enjoying the views.”
This project also was meaningful to Ronniesha because of the community she was welcomed into, emphasizing that for a project of this size, there was a large team consisting of consultants and tradesmen. “Every single person I worked with was absolutely dedicated to bringing it to life and understood that it would take deep collaboration to bring it all together. Simply amazing,” she remarks. “There is so much history infused into Camp Lutherhaven, and I was beyond overjoyed to be a part of making history for all the guests who will stay in the future.”
While Ronniesha acknowledges there is no shortage of “exceptional” interior designers in the area who are devoted and focused on their craft, she believes it is Alder and Stone’s design approach which truly sets them apart. “Our sweet spot is destination spaces such as cabins,
cottages and lodges. When you are designing someone’s luxury cabin, it takes a different approach, a different level of understanding the space and the client’s needs,” she explains. “It’s almost like balancing residential while also understanding that there may be some hospitality-type needs to the project as well.”
At the end of the day, as Ronniesha reflects back on what she finds most rewarding, it is the people. “When you think about it, your home is your safe place. It is where you raise your children, create memories with your partner — it is everything. So, the fact that people invite me into their safe space and put their trust in me to bring their vision to life — THAT is the reward.”

What sets them apart is their commitment to honesty; they operate without commissions. “This means you can trust our small family team to provide honest and unbiased advice, tailored to your specific needs. Our focus is on delivering top-notch service and ensuring your satisfaction, not on pushing unnecessary products or services,” Kelsey notes. “Our dedication to integrity has enabled us to build trust with homeowners, property managers and businesses alike, transforming first-time clients into lifelong customers.”
Their commitment to excellence is evident in every project they undertake — big or small. Whether a customer is in need of a simple repair to extend the life of their current garage door or considering a completely new, custom-designed installation, North Idaho Garage Door will help guide their clients through every step of the process.
North Idaho Garage Door's dedication to integrity and community extends beyond business. They take pride in contributing to the safety and security of their clients' homes and businesses, ensuring peace of mind through dependable services.
Their success story is not just about building a business; it's about building lasting relationships and being an integral part of the local community. The Johansens are proud members of NIBCA (North Idaho Building Contractors Association), collaborating closely with fellow builders and businesses. Kelsey's involvement in committees like Professional Women in Business and North Idaho Mamas in Business underscores her commitment to supporting women and fostering community engagement. This dedication led to Kelsey being recognized as Kootenai County Young Professional’s Top 30 under 40 winner this past year.
At North Idaho Garage Door, they are committed to serving a wide range of locations from Coeur d'Alene to Sandpoint — and all areas in between. Their dedication to accessibility is reflected in their customer service, with phone lines open seven days a week to ensure their team is always available to meet the needs of the community when it comes to their garage doors.
Earlier this year, they took second place for The Business Journal of North Idaho's Best of 2024 for Garage Door Contractor.
“We take great pride in being an integral part of our community, continually striving to contribute positively and uphold the highest standards of service,” Kelsey adds. “We look forward to serving our neighbors for many years to come, offering high-quality garage door solutions and customer service that exceeds expectations.”

Coeur d’Alene Triathlon
ONE OF THE PNW’S MOST SCENIC RACES TURNS
40 YEARS OLD THIS AUGUST by
Every year spanning the past four decades, athletes have gathered near Lake Coeur d’Alene to board a cruise boat before jumping in to begin a deep-water swim. This kicks off the annual Coeur d’Alene Triathlon, celebrating its 40th anniversary on August 10.
“The Coeur d’Alene Triathlon has been, and still is, one of the premier races in the Pacific Northwest,” says Teree Taylor, race and sponsorship coordinator. “In its founding years, it was a competitive race for pro and elite athletes like Mark Allen and Dave Scott” — each a six-time Ironman Triathlon World Champion, with Dave Scott the first to ever be inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame.
Since 2018, the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon has been owned by Rob Liddicot, “a 16-time Ironman triathlete, cyclist and all-around fan of anything outdoors,” Teree says. “He took ownership of the race with the goal of injecting new life and blood into the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon. Being a triathlete, he knows what it's like to participate in a well-run event.”
Teree says since Rob took over the race, participation has been growing every year. In 2023, they had just under 600 athletes.
In 2019, they added the Pacific Northwest’s only Deep-Water Olympic Swim Start. “Olympic athletes board the Cruise Ship Coeur d'Alene and are taken out into the bay off Independence Point for a 1.5k swim back to shore,” Teree says.
“Our community recognizes the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon as their ‘Hometown Race.’ We could not do the race without our local volunteers, who keep our athletes safe in the water and on our city streets, roadways and trails.”
The race is a USAT-sanctioned championship race for the state of Idaho. Along with Olympic Triathlon, the event offers a half-Olympic distance Scenic Sprint, and a Duathlon.
The Sprint Distance Triathlon takes off from Coeur d’Alene City Beach one hour after the Olympic race begins, sending participants into a 500-meter swim, 13-mile bike ride and 5k run.
Participants across Coeur d’Alene Triathlon events will take in views of Coeur d’Alene Lake, the Centennial Trail and the Spokane River. Courses conclude at the Triathlon Village finish line in Coeur d’Alene City Park.
Teree has been involved with the race since 2011 and says the event will have some surprises in store for its 40th anniversary. "We will have a 40-year commemorative medal and T-shirt for all finishers," she says, "and are hoping to have some surprise guests at our award ceremony."
Teree says the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon is thankful for the support provided by its sponsors over the years, especially current sponsors, along with community support.
“Our community recognizes the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon as their ‘Hometown Race.’ We could not do the race without our local volunteers, who keep our athletes safe in the water and on our city streets, roadways and trails,” Teree says. “It takes the coordination of community agencies and organizations that assist us in the complicated logistics required to put on a race of this caliber. The City of Coeur d'Alene, Coeur d'Alene Cruises, the Idaho State Parks & Recreation Department, the Eastside Highway District, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Sheriff's Department, the Department of Lands, the Coeur d’Alene Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and EMTs, The Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association and the Lake City High School Track Team all play a part.”

Fun Galore in 2024 Fun Galore in 2024
“This year marks my 10th anniversary at the North Idaho State Fair, and I can honestly say the magic never fades,” says Alexcia Jordan, general manager at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
“We are fortunate to have an incredible board and fantastic team whose collaboration and creativity are the driving forces behind each fair. Every year, we come together to reflect on past successes and brainstorm new ways to enhance the fair experience for everyone involved.”
This year's fair will take place August 16 through 25. Alexcia says what she looks forward to most this year is seeing her team’s vision come to life.
THE TEAM BEHIND THE NORTH IDAHO STATE FAIR WORKS TO CREATE UNIQUELY FUN EXPERIENCES EACH YEAR by
She says this year’s theme, “Fun Galore in 2024,” promises exactly that — an abundance of fun at every turn. “I can’t wait to see the smiles, hear the laughter and share in the delight as everyone discovers what we have in store!"
Alexcia looks forward to this year’s “incredible lineup” of entertainment for the fair, including Western National Pulling Series, a tractor and truck pull that is new and never before seen at the North Idaho State Fair.
“There's nothing quite like watching attendees enjoy the array of attractions and events we've passionately organized,” she says. “It’s in these moments that I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication of our team.”
“For grounds attractions, we are bringing the Extreme Dog Show and Sara Twister, who can shoot a bow and arrow with incredible accuracy with her feet,” she says. “Organizing the Party in the Dirt Concert Series is always an exhilarating challenge, as we aim to keep the lineup fresh and exciting each year. For years, we've featured just one act per night, but this year, we're shaking things up by having two acts co-headline each evening."
Perched on the hillside overlooking Lake Pend Oreille is a unique vacation destination like no other.

This year’s Party in the Dirt Concert Series on August 19 and 20 features artists Ernest, Nate Smith, Sugar Ray, and Smash Mouth. Alexcia says securing artists for the concert series is a comprehensive process, typically spanning four to six months. "It begins with identifying potential artists that align with the musical tastes and expectations of our audience," she says. "From there, we engage in negotiations, often extending multiple offers to different acts before finalizing our lineup. This part of the process can be quite intricate, involving discussions about schedules, fees, and technical requirements."
The negotiation phase is time-consuming and requires persistence and flexibility; "however, the effort is incredibly rewarding when we see the community's enthusiastic response to our announcements," Alexcia says. "Both nights promise to be memorable, offering something for everyone."
Planning the fair is a process that begins more than a year in advance, "starting with selecting a theme — which is always the fun part," Alexcia says. "We assess the previous year's outcomes to identify areas for improvement. Planning involves extensive collaboration across various segments including livestock programs, exhibits, admissions, concessions, carnival attractions, entertainment, security and parking."
Alexia says each team member plays a crucial role in planning the fair, extending their reach into the community, to engage with vendors, sponsors and local leaders, and continue expanding on the fair's offerings.
"Overcoming challenges like scheduling conflicts or weather-related issues requires creativity and resilience from our team," Alexcia says. "Ultimately, our goal is to orchestrate a fair that not only entertains but also educates and brings the community together, contributing significantly to our local economy."
Alexcia says many people may not know that the fair and its array of events hosted year-round are completely self-sustaining.
"This achievement is made possible through the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone who attends, volunteers, and sponsors our activities," she says. "Although we are located on county property, we operate independently and are not county employees. We take immense pride in the fact that we do not use taxpayer dollars to bring these experiences to life. This means every ticket purchased, every hour volunteered and every sponsorship directly contributes to creating this incredible event for our community."
The community is invited to continue enjoying and supporting the North Idaho State Fair this August, support that is "vital for sustaining the tradition and success of our fair," Alexcia says. "Come be a part of this community celebration that we all build together!" Learn

CROC COATINGS CONTINUES TO SHINE
Local
business transforming homes and businesses in North Idaho and Spokane
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Jim and Kelley Hobart began the next, exciting chapter in their life 14 years ago. Inspired by the beauty of North Idaho, the abundance of outdoor opportunities and the friendly people, they moved into their custom home in Hayden in 2010.
Everything was more beautiful than they had imagined it could be, except the epoxy flooring in the garage; after only a few years, it had faded, chipped and peeled up in the areas where they parked their cars. “I looked for solutions and was told I would need to have it professionally ground off, and then they would re-apply a new epoxy floor,” recalls Jim. “I didn’t want to repeat using epoxy only to get the same results a few years later.”
He and Kelley discovered the Penntek flooring system while visiting a relative — who raved about it! Jim decided to reach out to the manufacturer and discovered that no one was offering their flooring system alternative to epoxy in North Idaho or Spokane. This inspired the Hobarts to change that. They introduced Croc Coatings in 2020, bringing this revolutionary flooring system to the area so that others could have a new choice with premium flooring solutions. Since that time, they have installed over 1,000 Croc floors for local residents and businesses.
“We started the business with a mission to provide extraordinary floors and service and have grown as a result of delivering on this promise,”

Discover the Power of Natural Techniques for Hormonal Balance
NURTURING WELLNESS FOR MEN AND WOMEN
by DREW JOHNSON
Hormones are the chemical messengers that orchestrate numerous physiological processes in our bodies, influencing everything from mood and metabolism to reproduction and growth. Achieving hormonal balance is crucial for overall health and well-being, yet many individuals struggle with hormonal imbalances at various stages of life. While conventional medical treatments exist, a growing number of people are turning to holistic approaches to restore equilibrium to their hormonal systems. It’s time to explore holistic methods for balancing hormones in both men and women.
Understanding Hormonal Imbalance
Hormonal imbalance occurs when there's either too much or too little of a particular hormone circulating in the body. This imbalance can lead to a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight gain or loss, mood swings, irregular menstruation, decreased libido, and more. Factors such as stress, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, environmental toxins and aging can all contribute to hormonal disruptions.
Holistic Approaches for Hormonal Balance
Diet and Nutrition: A cornerstone of holistic hormone balance is adopting a diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods. Focus on consuming plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Consider making modifications to your diet to incorporate foods that support hormone production and metabolism, such as cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale), fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), nuts and seeds, fiber (fortified cereals, oats, chia seeds) and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (flaxseeds, chia seeds).
Stress Management: Chronic stress can disrupt hormone levels, particularly cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. Practicing stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises and spending time in nature can help lower cortisol levels and promote hormonal balance.
Regular Exercise: Physical activity is essential for maintaining healthy hormone levels. Aim for a combination of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises to support overall well-being. Exercise helps regulate insulin levels, reduce inflammation and promote the release of endorphins, which can positively impact hormone balance.
Adequate Sleep: Sleep plays a vital role in hormone regulation, with disruptions in sleep patterns often leading to hormonal imbalances. For proper sleep hygiene, aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night to support hormone production, repair and rejuvenation. Summer Beauty Essentials
Pro tips for radiant skin and effortless glow all season long
During summer, prioritize hydration for radiant skin by drinking plenty of water and indulging in water-rich fruits like watermelon. Shield your skin with sunscreen daily to prevent sun damage and premature aging. Opt for lightweight, oil-free skin-care products to avoid clogged pores in the heat. Incorporate antioxidant-rich foods like berries and leafy greens into your diet to combat UV damage from within. Lastly, embrace your natural beauty with minimal makeup for a fresh, effortless look.
• Vitex: Also known as chasteberry, vitex is commonly used to regulate menstrual cycles and alleviate symptoms of PMS.
• Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and support hormonal balance.
• Magnesium: This essential mineral plays a crucial role in hormone production and may help alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Hormone Testing and Monitoring: For those experiencing persistent symptoms of hormonal imbalance, hormone testing can provide valuable insights into specific hormone levels and imbalances. This information allows individuals to tailor their holistic approach to address their unique hormonal needs effectively.
Balancing hormones is essential for optimal health and well-being, and holistic approaches offer a natural and effective way to achieve hormonal equilibrium. By addressing factors such as diet, stress, exercise, sleep and supplementation, individuals can support their body's innate ability to balance hormones naturally and promote overall wellness.

WHERE PERSONAL BEAUTY Meets Modern Luxury ROOTS HAIR STUDIO
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Amy Jones has been in the business of cosmetology for the past 15 years. Her professional career had its start at h.i.p. Salon in downtown Coeur d’Alene, which her sister Heidi Potter owned. “I watched her get to be a mom and have a creative career at the same time,” Amy recalls. Five years later, Amy would embark on her own journey, opening her own unique space in Hayden — Roots Hair Studio. What started out as a tiny three-chair salon in 2014 had expanded to 1,600 square feet with eight stations, one esthetician room and one scalp facial room. And this spring, they signed a lease to rent the unit next door, making the studio a total of 3,200 square feet, adding three hair suites, two scalp facial suites and one additional room for their miscellaneous needs.
This family owned studio specializes in cuts for women, men and children, color, perms, extensions, weaves, toner, color and balayage, and is dedicated to making clients look and feel their best. Those with an upcoming wedding or special event in need of the perfect hair to complement their look, Amy invites you to schedule a consultation to explore various styles to reflect your personal tastes and preferences. Most recently, Amy became certified in scalp facials and now offers this deep-cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating treatment — inspired to bring this treatment to the community after a personal family struggle.
In September of 2022, Amy’s oldest son underwent a liver transplant, with Amy donating half of her liver to help save her son. Due to the hair loss that she personally experienced resulting from this, she felt called to help others who were also experiencing scalp issues, thinning hair and hair loss. She wanted to combine this with a truly relaxing experience. Scalp facials were the answer. And this service has quickly grown to become her most popular treatment at Roots.
“The most rewarding thing is seeing a person walk in and leave feeling like a completely different person,” Amy smiles. “And with scalp facials, I love feeling my clients completely relax in the shampoo bowl.”
Roots’ mission is to redefine the hair salon experience by prioritizing exceptional customer service, fostering genuine connections, and creating a welcoming environment where every individual feels valued, comfortable and truly heard. “We are dedicated to making the beauty industry more personable, one client at a time, by delivering personalized care, attention to detail, and a commitment to enhancing the confidence and well-being of each person who walks through our doors,” Amy affirms.
Born and raised in beautiful North Idaho, Amy is mom to four children (three boys and one girl). The family stays busy on their hobby ranch, where they raise Mini Highlanders and Kunekune pigs, and as a devoted rodeo family. Amy feels blessed to be raising her family in this generous community.
“Having a child that is transplanted, and having had the community rally around our family, put a different fire in me to find ways to give back to our community,” Amy shares. “Whether it’s raising
animals for medical families or giving parents going through the same experience scalp facials on the house. I personally find it huge to be a part of community, and that’s what I compare to the Western way of life: to always help your neighbor.”
Whether you're after a subtle change or a bold new look, Amy and her team of skilled stylists are dedicated to bringing your vision to life, ensuring that each visit leaves you feeling refreshed and confident in your appearance.
