Embracing Change: A Journey Through Transformation and Growth
As the seasons shift, so too does our community. We watch the familiar ebb and flow, and while a part of us often resists these changes, the truth is that change is essential. Growth can't happen in stillness—it thrives in the transitions and moments when the world around us begins to evolve.
I won’t use the old caterpillar-turned-butterfly metaphor. Still, the sentiment holds: change challenges us because it disrupts our routines, sense of comfort, and attachment to what we know. And yet, in these moments of discomfort, we find new opportunities, perspectives, and strengths.
As we prepare to say goodbye to the warmth of summer and welcome the crispness of fall, let us embrace the inevitable changes around us. In this issue, we explore not only the shifts happening in our surroundings but also the exciting possibilities that
come with them. Change is, after all, not something to fear but something to grow with. Dive into our magazine to discover the season's richness, from celebrating autumn at the Harvest Festival with the Kootenai County Farmers Market to learning how local businesses make a meaningful impact through Project SEARCH by hosting internships for students with disabilities. Plus, don't miss our guide to Local Activities this Fall in Coeur d’Alene and much more to inspire your fall adventures.
Here's to new beginnings, growth, and the beauty of embracing what’s next.

Finding the Perfect Med Spa: Your guide to choosing the right team
Selecting the right med spa and team is crucial for achieving your aesthetic and wellness goals. Start by researching reputable med spas with positive reviews and licensed medical professionals on staff. Schedule consultations to discuss your needs and assess their expertise. During visits, note the facility’s cleanliness and ambiance. Ask about the range of services and the technology they use, ensuring they offer FDA-approved treatments. Evaluate their personalized care approach — your med spa should tailor treatments to your unique needs and provide clear post-procedure instructions. Finally, consider the rapport with the staff. A compassionate, knowledgeable team that listens to your concerns and explains procedures clearly can make a significant difference in your med spa experience.

This multi-faceted approach to aging ensures long-lasting and impactful results. Treatments like fractional CO2 laser and RF microneedling target deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production, while hormone replacement therapy and supplements support internal health. North Idaho Ketamine and TMS
Revitalizing minds and renewing lives
by ELIZABETH RAY
Seeking wellness through meaningful experience, North Idaho Ketamine and TMS is Coeur d'Alene's original ketamine infusion clinic offering ketamine, Spravato, TMS and CTK (combined TMS and ketamine therapy).
Here, owner John M. Thurston, MD, is changing lives for the better through the clinic’s treatments. “Hearing the life changing accounts from people who go through these treatments will always be inspiring,” he says.
John completed his residency training in psychiatry at Eastern Virginia Medical School and is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has worked in addiction
psychiatry, inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison and forensics. After completing his residency in 2017, John has consistently maintained a small side practice of therapy patients, and in 2021, he opened TMHCare (Tranquil Mind Health Care) in Coeur d’Alene, now North Idaho Ketamine and TMS. He has been dedicated to the field of interventional psychiatry, which includes ketamine, Spravato and TMS — and continues to explore integrating different therapeutic modalities with these treatments.
“I had my first ketamine treatment in 2019, and for me it was eye opening,” John recalls. “I felt inspired to share this experience
and find ways to make it even more therapeutic, which led to the expansion of TMHCare and the eventual creation of North Idaho Ketamine and TMS.”
As John shares, the vast majority of ketamine clinics are owned and operated by providers with very little or no mental health training. As a psychiatrist, he meets with every patient for a 90-minute evaluation, discussing what has been tried, what has helped, what hasn’t, and how to get the most out of treatment. “The evaluation is diagnostic, and hopefully therapeutic,” John adds. “I consider myself a psychodynamically oriented psychiatrist, which influences my approach to mental health and healing.”
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic used as a successful treatment for depression and pain management. TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) is FDA approved for depression and covered by most insurances. Spravato is esketamine delivered by nasal inhalation, and insurance will cover the treatment for medical necessity related to treatment-resistant depression.
“We have provided ketamine treatments to people from all walks of life. Some are suffering from pain —physical and / or emotional. Some feel that something is missing or that they could improve in some way. Some have found ketamine to be helpful in overcoming grief, bereavement, trauma, addiction or physical damage, and some are just curious,” notes John. “The ketamine community at large is a wonderful group of courageous, passionate and sincere individuals. There is a sense of inclusivity that rises above feelings of competition.”
John and his team have committed themselves to developing a community where they are a healing presence for each other and extend that to everyone who walks through their door. “As we continue to grow and add new members of the team, I have found a growing family, trust, beautiful support and love that has become a reward all its own.”
At North Idaho Ketamine and TMS, John ensures they focus on quality of care over quantity of care. They never overbook or double-book any appointments — so when you make an appointment with them, their team is consistent, on time and able to provide what is needed.
They work with many veterans and first responders, and provide ketamine and TMS treatments to veterans in the Patriot Power Up Program, a local residential treatment program focused on treating PTSD and TBI. Active with Big Tent Ketamine and The American Society of Ketamine Practitioners (ASKP3), John is also the director of Voyage Foundation, a nonprofit organization specifically for the ethical advancement of ketamine therapies and a way to grow the community around ketamine treatment. He has published the “Ketamine Journey Manual,” which can be found at VoyageFoundation.com.
“Some people, myself included, feel a strong pull to share their experiences with others following a ketamine treatment,” John remarks. “Voyage Foundation is not clinical; it’s just people coming together to share. We have collaborated with other therapists, doctors, sound healers, aromatherapist, acupuncturists, yoga instructors, massage therapists and chiropractors — just to name some of the professionals that come immediately to mind. Ketamine treatment is a wonderful adjunct and is complementary to many modalities of healing. We are always looking for ways to expand and assist.”
For more information regarding the treatments offered through North Idaho Ketamine and TMS, John encourages you to call or text 208.215.7936, or submit a request via their website, NorthIdahoKetamine.com. North Idaho Ketamine and TMS 250 Northwest Boulevard, Suite 200 Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Upgrade Labs: Biohacking for Health
Enhancing physical and mental performance
by DREW JOHNSON
Nestled in the heart of Coeur d'Alene, Upgrade Labs, a pioneering biohacking facility, is revolutionizing health and wellness. Located at 2086 North Main Street, this innovative center is spearheaded by Paul and Kayleen Tinker, a dynamic duo passionate about biohacking and optimizing health.
Paul and Kayleen's journey into biohacking began seven years ago when Kayleen faced significant health challenges. The discovery of biohacking — a method of manipulating one's environment and biology to improve health — was nothing short of transformative. Their personal health improvements inspired them to bring this cutting-edge technology to Coeur d'Alene, seeing it as a beacon of hope for those facing similar challenges.
"At Upgrade Labs, we provide state-of-the-art biohacking technology for performance, recovery and brain cognition," says Kayleen. Clients begin their journey at Upgrade Labs with a Cell Health Analysis, which measures various biomarkers — from visceral fat to inflammation to a longevity biomarker called phase angle and much more. The results, combined with the client's goals, create a targeted protocol using their equipment. Progress is tracked with additional Cell Health Analysis scans to monitor improvements and adjust protocols as needed. Among the impressive array of equipment are:
AI Bike: Delivers a 40-minute jog's benefits in just 40 seconds of effort.
The Metabolic Trainer: Enhances metabolism, energy, longevity and recovery by stimulating healthy mitochondria in the cells.
AI Cheat Machine: Increases muscle mass and strength in minutes per week.
Cryotherapy: Boosts metabolism, immune function, sleep quality and optimization in a -175°F chamber. It will also maximize an endorphin rush — the body’s feel-good hormone.
The Big Squeeze: A high-tech lymphatic massage system that detoxifies and slims the body.
PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields): Increases energy and immunity and promotes healing. PEMF also boosts cognitive and creative brain functions.
Red Charger: This device uses photobiomodulation to heal damaged cells through specific wavelengths of red and green light and frequencies.
Brain Upgrade Neurofeedback: Enhances mental well-being through targeted EEG technology by unlocking the potential for individuals to enhance mental well-being through self-regulation.
What truly sets Upgrade Labs apart is its unique approach to wellness. By using AI-driven, medical-grade equipment, the lab maximizes health results in minimal time, allowing clients to reclaim time to enjoy Coeur d'Alene's attractions. Unlike
traditional fitness and recovery methods, Upgrade Labs optimizes health from the cellular level, providing a comprehensive and intriguing approach to well-being.
Paul and Kayleen attribute their early success to their dedicated team, especially Laurie, the center manager. "Laurie's passion for wellness and her efforts to engage the community have been pivotal," says Paul. The couple also credits the supportive Coeur d'Alene community, which values health and wellness, for their successful launch. This sense of community is what makes Upgrade Labs more than just a facility; it is a supportive network for all seeking to improve their health.
Since moving to Coeur d'Alene from Seattle in 2020, Paul and Kayleen have found a slower-paced, family friendly environment rich in outdoor activities. The community's warmth and entrepreneurial spirit have made them feel at home, reinforcing their commitment to enhancing local health and wellness.

Kootenai County Substance Abuse Council
REDUCING SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONG YOUTH, AND IN TURN, ADULTS, IN OUR COMMUNITY by
Founded in 1985 by Lucinda Ade, Nancy Martin, Muriel Stamps, Patty Strand and Bob Macdonald, Kootenai County Substance Abuse Council (KCSAC) brings awareness to the public about the dangers of substance use and driving, with a mission to reduce substance abuse among youth, and in turn, adults in Kootenai County.
KCSAC works with law enforcement and educators to educate the public on the dangers of substance use and abuse within the community. They do this by holding Lunch and Learns, Victim Impact Panels, My Choice Panel, mock crashes for graduating high schoolers, community outreach and events.
“Our Lunch and Learns are a publicly offered service where we have skilled and knowledgeable speakers on different subjects affecting our community,” Toni Estes, KCSAC’s executive director, explains. Topics include subjects such as the dangers of fentanyl and the signs of fentanyl poisoning; Narcan and how to administer it; alcohol and the teen mind; marijuana and the teen mind; alcohol and what it does to your body, among other subjects. “We have also done one on suicide,” she adds.
The Victim Impact Panel, according to Toni, is for those who have an impaired or reckless driving infraction; some have been court mandated, some have yet to go to court. “I have had
"It's not just a crisis of the poor and weak. It affects everyone and ripples out into our families and our communities."
parents bring their teens to our panels hoping something will catch their attention that it could happen to them,” she notes. At the Victim Impact Panel, attendees will hear local stories from people about how drugs or alcohol has affected them and their families, and even stories from crash victims.
My Choice Panel is a quarterly meeting for juveniles to bring awareness of the effects of drugs and alcohol on their bodies and developing minds. “We also have speakers that share their stories of what they have gone through with a loved one,” mentions Toni.
KCSAC has witnessed an increase in substance abuse throughout Kootenai County, most notably fentanyl and marijuana, and, of course, alcohol. Toni believes the problem continues to grow “because our communities are growing at an astronomical rate, and with the influx of people, you have the influx of substances,” she explains.
Parents with teenagers are encouraged to get informed and look for signs of alcohol and / or drug use, such as a change in behavior, friends, grades and isolation. Toni shares there are several websites offering a wealth of information on signs of use, how to talk to your teen, and other helpful information. A few websites she recommends are: GoodDrugPolicy.org, GetSmartAboutDrugs.com and LearnAboutSam.org. You can also follow Kootenai County Substance Abuse Council at Facebook.com/KCSAC2016 or visit KCSAC.net, where they share important information, articles and stories.
“I hate to say it, but we need to start talking to our children as early as the first or second grade,” Toni emphasizes. “With social media and kids having phones at such an early age, parents need to start early, otherwise they will learn about it on social media or friends. Burying our head in the sand thinking it isn't going to happen to us is a grave mistake. I hear stories almost daily about wonderful families who are impacted by this crisis. It's not just a crisis of the poor and weak. It affects everyone and ripples out into our families and our communities.”
“I have found in my travels that substance use / abuse is usually from trauma. We are trying to run away or not deal with said trauma; that is why we turn to something to hide or mask the pain,” Toni explains. “Substance use / abuse does not discriminate between sexual orientation, race or social status. It hits us all. Only you know if it is a problem affecting you and your family. There is hope and resources out there. If you need help connecting the dots to receive help, call or email us. We are there to help.”

LOCAL BUSINESSES HOST INTERNSHIPS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
“This year marks my 10th anniversary at the North Idaho State Fair, and I can honestly say the magic never fades,” says Alexcia Jordan, general manager at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
Project SEARCH is a job training program for students with disabilities following their senior year of high school. “We recruit students on Individual Education Plans (IEPs) from local school districts (Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Lakeland) as well as charter, private and homeschooled students,” says Theresa Moran, program director.
One of over 700 programs across the world, Project SEARCH Coeur d'Alene at Kootenai Health started in September 2010 as the first and only program in Idaho. The program is a collaborative partnership between Kootenai Health, the Coeur d'Alene School District and the Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Since 2010, 120 interns have participated in the Project SEARCH program hosted at Kootenai Health. “The goal of our program is competitive employment for all our graduates. Kootenai Health and local businesses have been hiring our graduates as full-time and part-time employees, filling many essential jobs in our area,” Theresa says.
“Our graduates love their jobs and bring great enthusiasm to the workplace. During the Project SEARCH program, the interns learn by working side-side with Kootenai Health staff, rotating to three departments during the program. The hospital is a great host business because it is a mini city, and our interns can build their skills and get hired in a variety of industries.”
Most internships are hosted by Kootenai Health to allow Project SEARCH staff to provide support and guidance on campus. Interns report to the campus for daily skills training including resume writing, interview practice, professional
workplace expectations, skill building, and problem-solving workplace challenges, along with mock interviews, CPR and wheelchair training.
“During our third internship rotation (April through May), Project SEARCH interns may complete their internship away from Kootenai Health. Companies that host internships are interested in considering the intern for employment by the end of the internship,” Theresa explains. Mountain West Bank, Shabby Fabrics, and The Salvation Army Joan and Ray Kroc Center have hosted and hired Project SEARCH interns/graduates over the years.
In Project SEARCH, interns gain valuable job skills and confidence that helps them be successful in employment. “Our interns learn by trying new things and learn about themselves throughout the year,” Theresa says. “By the end of the nine-month training program, they are able to talk about their strengths, challenges and what supports or accommodations they may need on a job.”
Theresa describes Project SEARCH participant Chayana Frahm, who used a variety of high-tech and low-tech devices for communication while interning in the Big Blue Coffee Company at Kootenai Health. She disclosed being deaf, and customers were encouraged to write their orders on an LCD writing tablet. Chayana was then hired in the same position where she interned as a part-time barista in Big Blue Coffee Company. “She is excited to continue working at Kootenai Health and to use the skills she gained in Project SEARCH on the job.”
Project SEARCH Coeur d’Alene will start its 15th class in September 2024, and as Theresa shares, “We are excited to welcome eight incredible interns into our program where they will learn the skills necessary for today's workforce and would love to connect our interns to incredible businesses in our community.”
Companies interested in hosting internships or hiring graduates can connect with Project SEARCH staff by phone, email or through social media to learn how to get involved and help change the lives of young people across the community. “Our graduates value working,” Theresa says. “They are excited to work and gain independence.”

Remove Dead and Diseased Plants: Clear out any dead or diseased plants from your garden to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering. Compost healthy plant debris but dispose of any diseased material to avoid contamination.
Mulch Your Garden Beds: Apply a layer of mulch to your garden beds to protect the soil during the winter months. Mulching helps regulate soil temperature, retain moisture and prevent erosion.
Prune Perennials and Shrubs: Trim back perennials and prune shrubs to tidy up the garden and encourage healthy growth in the spring. Focus on removing dead or damaged branches and shaping plants as needed.

CROC COATINGS CONTINUES TO SHINE
Local business transforming homes and businesses in North Idaho and Spokane
by THOMAS WILLIAMS
JCoatings, LLC

im and Kelley Hobart began the next, exciting chapter in their life 14 years ago. Inspired by the beauty of North Idaho, the abundance of outdoor opportunities and the friendly people, they moved into their custom home in Hayden in 2010.
Everything was more beautiful than they had imagined it could be, except the epoxy flooring in the garage; after only a few years, it had faded, chipped and peeled up in the areas where they parked their cars. “I looked for solutions and was told I would need to have it professionally ground off, and then they would re-apply a new epoxy floor,” recalls Jim. “I didn’t want to repeat using epoxy only to get the same results a few years later.”
He and Kelley discovered the Penntek flooring system while visiting a relative — who raved about it! Jim decided to reach out to the manufacturer and discovered that no one was offering their flooring system alternative to epoxy in North Idaho or Spokane. This inspired the Hobarts to change that. They introduced Croc Coatings in 2020, bringing this revolutionary flooring system to the area so that others could have a new choice with premium flooring solutions. Since that time, they have installed over 1,000 Croc floors for local residents and businesses.
“We started the business with a mission to provide extraordinary floors and service and have grown as a result of delivering on this promise,”

Once you have a headcount, plan your menu, balancing traditional favorites like turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce with a few unique dishes to surprise and delight your guests. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences to accommodate all your guests comfortably.
Preparation is key to a smooth Thanksgiving day. Make a detailed shopping list and shop early to avoid last-minute stress. Prepare as many dishes as possible in advance — pies, casseroles and side dishes can often be made a day or two ahead. On the day of the feast, create a cooking schedule to ensure everything is ready at the same time.
Setting the scene is equally important. Decorate your home with seasonal touches such as autumn leaves, pumpkins and candles to create a cozy, festive atmosphere. Arrange your dining table thoughtfully, with plenty of space for each guest and a beautiful centerpiece to set the tone.
As your guests arrive, greet them with a warm welcome and perhaps a seasonal cocktail or mocktail. Encourage mingling with light appetizers before the main meal. During dinner, facilitate engaging conversations by sharing what you’re thankful for and inviting others to do the same.
Finally, don’t forget the importance of hospitality. Ensure everyone feels at home, attend to any needs promptly, and most importantly, enjoy the company and the celebration. With thoughtful planning and a warm spirit, your Thanksgiving gathering will be memorable for all the right reasons.

HealthBeauty &
by PATRICE ALLEN
As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, our bodies need a robust immune system to fend off the seasonal colds and flu. The transition from summer to fall brings a plethora of nutrient-rich foods that can enhance our immunity. Incorporating these fall superfoods into your diet can help you stay healthy and energized during the colder months.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a quintessential fall favorite and a powerhouse of nutrition. Rich in vitamins A and C, pumpkin boosts immune function by supporting the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections. Vitamin A, derived from the beta-carotene in pumpkins, plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of our skin, acting as the first line of defense against pathogens.
The high fiber content in pumpkin aids digestion, promoting a healthy gut environment that is essential for optimal immune function. The antioxidants present in pumpkin, such as alphacarotene and beta-carotene, protect your cells from free radicals and reduce inflammation. Enjoy pumpkin in soups, roasted as a side dish, or even in smoothies, for a delicious and immuneboosting treat. Pumpkin seeds are also beneficial as they contain zinc, another nutrient that supports immune health.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are another fall staple that is packed with betacarotene, a precursor to vitamin A. This nutrient is vital for maintaining healthy skin and mucous membranes, which act as barriers against infections. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin C, manganese and antioxidants that further enhance your immune system. The fiber in sweet potatoes supports digestive health, ensuring a well-functioning gut, which is crucial for overall immune health.
The antioxidants in sweet potatoes, including anthocyanins in purple varieties, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and support immune health. Sweet potatoes are incredibly versatile and can be baked, mashed or used in stews to take full advantage of their health benefits. Their natural sweetness also makes them a comforting and nutritious addition to fall meals.
Pomegranates
Pomegranates are in season during the fall and are renowned for their high levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and polyphenols. These compounds help protect your immune cells from damage and support overall immune function. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, stimulates the production of white blood cells and helps them function more effectively, thereby enhancing the body’s ability to fight infections.
Pomegranate juice or seeds can be added to salads, yogurt, drinks, or enjoyed on their own for a tangy, health-boosting snack. The antioxidants in pomegranates also reduce inflammation and support cardiovascular health by improving cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Pomegranates have been shown to have antiviral properties, making them an excellent addition to your diet during cold and flu season. Enjoy the sweet-tart flavor and the numerous health benefits of this vibrant fruit.
Roasted Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Medley
Boost your immune system with this simple yet delicious vegetable medley. All you need is 2 medium sweet potatoes and 2 cups pumpkin (all peeled and cut to your personal preference), 4 cloves minced garlic, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, salt and pepper to taste, and chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional).
Preheat your oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, combine the sweet potatoes and pumpkin and add the minced garlic, olive oil, cinnamon, nutmeg, smoked paprika, salt and pepper. Toss everything together until the vegetables are well coated with the oil and spices. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it and spread the vegetable mixture in a single layer. Roast in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and golden brown, stirring halfway through the cooking time. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving dish. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve warm.
Garlic is a natural immune booster known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It contains allicin, a compound that enhances the response of white blood cells to fight off infections. Incorporating garlic into your meals can help protect against colds and flu. Allicin is released when garlic is crushed or chopped, so let it sit for a few minutes before cooking to maximize its health benefits.
Garlic also supports cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, further contributing to overall well-being. Use garlic in soups, stews or roasted vegetables to add flavor and health benefits. The pungent aroma and taste of garlic not only enhance your meals but also provide significant health advantages.
Incorporating these fall superfoods into your diet can significantly boost your immune system and keep you healthy during the colder months. Embrace the season by enjoying the rich flavors and nutritional benefits these foods have to offer. Stay well, and enjoy the beauty and bounty of fall!
VITAMIN C, A POTENT ANTIOXIDANT, STIMULATES THE PRODUCTION OF WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND HELPS THEM FUNCTION MORE EFFECTIVELY, THEREBY ENHANCING THE BODY’S ABILITY TO FIGHT INFECTIONS.
