NOTE
Publisher’s Vanished!
Relax with us!
OVER THE COURSE of the last few weeks, the world has watched in horror as Malaysian Airlines flight 370 vanished from the face of the earth. News broadcasters count down the days until the ping from the black box, which is actually orange in color, will no longer be audible. Satellite images provide clues but no answers. While theories such as terrorism or engine malfunction abound, the tragic reality is that 239 people have vanished from the face of the earth; almost like a bad science fiction movie. How is it in this era of technology that we can lose a plane? After all, it was over 40 years ago when families gathered around the television to watch in awe as an astronaut made history walking on the moon. Now, nearly a half-century later, we are not able to locate a missing plane. We’ve all heard the saying ‘it’s a small world,’ but this latest occurrence is a testament to just how vast the world is; the depths of the oceans incomprehensible. While this is baffling for many, it is heart wrenching for those whose loved ones were on that flight. What can possibly provide closure when they have no idea of the fate of those aboard?
Minutes from EVERYTHING in Sandpoint!
This tragedy was closely followed by another disaster closer to home. The horrific landslide in Snohomish County left many feeling unsafe in their own homes. Lives were lost and families are waiting for word of their loved ones who are still missing. I urge you to stop and take a moment from your day. Remember those whose lives have been altered tragically by these events, reflect on your own blessings, and while you are at it – a little prayer can go a long way.

IT WAS ALL SMILES at the grand opening of the PEAK Health and Wellness Center’s brand new Tennis Facility in Hayden. Three years of planning, finding a location, building, and fine tuning have transformed an empty patch of land off Government Way into one of the most state of the art tennis facilities in the northwest. Complete with five indoor courts, members and organizers are excited for the opportunity to expand open play, tournaments, lessons, and other activities. “For 32 years we had two courts, and we’ve always known we needed more,” said Co-Owner Gary Retter. “We heard great response from the community about the project, and I’m happy to see it opened today.” The facility is run by head tennis pro Bill Graves who brings more than 30 years of teaching experience with him. Graves is one of only a few pros in the country that hold a USPTA Elite Pro certification, the highest level of training possible for a tennis pro. When the owners

approached Graves with their plan, he told them if they built the facility, he would definitely run it. “Tennis is a lifelong sport and us professionals are passionate and want to share that with everybody,” said Graves. With the availability of five courts, everybody will be able to share. “We used to have folks call us at 5am each morning to reserve open time. We now have so much more time available it won’t be as big a battle for court time,” said Graves. The PEAK Tennis in Hayden offers lessons for children starting at age three, and to anyone who wants to swing a racquet. The Quickstart program is designed for ages ten and under and has different levels as children progress. Court size and net height is shrunk for younger kids, and they also use a different ball that works better with their swing. “We now have a place where kids can learn, play and get better year round,” said Co-Owner Tallie Althen. “I’m excited about that, and I hope the community is too.”
V-Day CDA 2014 presents: “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer: Writings to Stop Violence against Women and Girls,” a fundraiser for North Idaho Violence Prevention Center. Co-edited by Mollie Doyle and award-winning “The Vagina Monologues” author Eve Ensler, “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer” is a collection of personal and powerful monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights. The production is a result of local activists uniting to raise awareness about violence towards women and girls. At times brutal, funny, tragic and profound, these monologues form a collective and defiant voice calling for an end to this global violence. V-Day is a global activist movement that generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls. Proceeds from this event will go directly to North Idaho Violence Prevention Center (The Women’s Center), a local agency providing free counseling and support, legal advocacy, safe housing, education, and more to area victims. When: April 25th & 26th 2014, doors open at 6pm, show begins at 7:30pm. Where: Eagles at 209 E. Sherman. Tickets: $30 advance or $35 at the door. http://mmrpcda.eventbrite.com facebook.com/mmrpcda
The center is already attracting tournaments from all across the region, and PEAK is pairing up with clubs in Missoula, Spokane, and Edmunds, Washington to hold tournaments and mixers. What’s also unique to the new facility is its viewing area. Guests can sit at comfortable tables inside the glass so they not only see the action but hear it as well. The area is protected by netting that barely disrupts the view. It’s also a place for more than tennis as there is access to pickleball and badminton, cardio machines, and a yoga studio that will feature hot yoga classes. A full service pro shop includes brands like K-Swiss, Wilson, and Babolat, and if you need your racquet restrung or other repairs staff on site can help you out. For more information or for a tour of the facility stop by or call 208.762.5777.

Seller’s Secrets Ten tips to selling your home. By Jan Leaf of Coldwell Banker. Schneidmiller Real Estate, Associate Broker.
EXPLORE POST FALLS
Post Falls, Idaho
SELLING SECRET #10: PRICING IT RIGHT A good real estate agent can provide you with a current market analysis to determine the market price for your home; the price that a buyer will pay for your property. Selling Secret #9: Half-empty closets Storage is something every buyer is looking for and can never have enough of. Take half the stuff out of your closets then neatly organize what’s left in there. Buyers will open closet doors. Selling Secret #8: Light it up Maximize the light in your home. After location, good light is the one thing that every buyer cites that they want in a home. Take down the drapes, clean the windows, change the lampshades, increase the wattage of your light bulbs and let in the sunshine. Selling Secret #7: Play the agent field A secret sale killer is hiring the wrong broker. Make sure you have a broker who is totally informed: knows what properties are on the market and knows the comps in your neighborhood
411 East Sand Wedge Drive, Post Falls Beautiful ranchers on the 4th tee-box at Prairie Falls Golf Course. Sun room with inset fireplace in cabinetry. Hardwood floors, A/C, gas fireplace for master and living room. Great vews. 2,200 sq ft • $269,900 • MLS #14-1750 Visit www.janleaf.com for more listings!
Selling Secret #6: Conceal the critters You might think a cuddly dog would warm the hearts of potential buyers, but you’d be wrong. Not everybody is a dog or cat lover. A bowl full of dog food or the smell of the kitty litter box will give buyers the impression that your house is not clean. Selling Secret #5: Don’t over-upgrade Quick fixes before selling always pay off. Mammoth makeovers, not so much. Get a new fresh coat of paint on the walls. Replace door handles, cabinet hardware, make sure closet doors are on track, fix leaky faucets and clean the grout. Selling Secret #4: Take the home out of your house One of the most important things to do when selling your house is to de-personalize it. The more personal stuff in your house, the less potential buyers can imagine themselves living there. Get rid of a third of your stuff – put it in storage. Selling Secret #3: The kitchen comes first You’re not actually selling your house, you’re selling your kitchen – that’s how important it is. The benefits of remodeling your kitchen are endless, and the best part of it is that you’ll probably get 85% of your money back. Selling Secret #2: Always be ready to show Your house needs to be “show-ready” at all times. Don’t leave dishes in the sink, keep the dishwasher cleaned out, the bathrooms sparkling and make sure there are no dust bunnies in the corners. It’s a little inconvenient, but it will get your house sold. Selling Secret #1: The first impression is the only impression No matter how good the interior of your home looks, buyers have already judged your home before they walk through the door. Don’t ignore the curb appeal. Spruce up your home’s exterior with inexpensive shrubs and brightly colored flowers.

Just Roses Plus
A staple in the Coeur d’Alene community . By Colin Anderson.
FOR A LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESS to last nearly two decades, you know they’re doing something right. For nineteen years, Just Roses Plus has been a staple of the 4th Street corridor at the same 4th Street and Harrison Avenue location each of those years. What started as a shop only featuring roses, has now blossomed into a full service florist capable of finding just about any flower in the world. “We can do weddings, special events, birthdays, anniversaries, or something as simple as a single rose to brighten someone’s day,” said Owner Kelly Sanchez. Sanchez has been with the business from its beginning and purchased the store in 2012. “I love working with our everyday and repeat customers,” said Sanchez. “Building strong relationships are something we take a lot of pride in.” Just Roses Plus is coming off another extremely busy Valentine’s Day. In a typical week, the store goes through about six hundred stems of flowers. During the week of Valentine’s Day that number skyrockets to nearly ten thousand. “It’s definitely our busiest time of year. We do about six weeks worth of business in just two days,” said Sanchez. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Just Roses Plus is gearing up for another rush as dads and kids prepare to get their moms a special bouquet for her special day. Kelly and her team help their customers pick out the perfect flowers for each occasion and, unlike many box stores, can work with any budget from simple to extravagant. “If ten dollars is what you have to spend, I can still make you a beautiful bouquet,” said Sanchez. A common complaint from those who purchase flowers is that they age and wilt too quickly. Flowers that are sent to box stores and grocery stores are typically shipped in the same containers as that store’s produce. Produce can give off a gas that will actually age the flowers faster during transport. Just Roses Plus purchases direct from the grower, allowing their flowers to stay bright and radiant longer. “Our flowers typically last five to seven days longer than those you might purchase in a grocery store or box store,” said Sanchez.
Just Roses Plus is also a firm believer in family run business, buying local, and supporting the community. Employees and helpers at the store are Sanchez family members, children, and a cousin. During the summer growing months, the store purchases as much as they can from local growers. Flower donations from the store can be seen at Hospice of North Idaho, several silent auctions, local churches, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and at assisted living homes across the area. “I love bringing flowers to our seniors, to see their day brightened makes my day better too,” said Sanchez. Just Roses Plus can always handle walkins, but if you have a specific flower or arrangement you’re looking for, it’s best to give a couple of days notice. Arrangements can also be viewed and purchased from their website www.justrosespluscda.com.

1st Annual Homebrew Competition Homebrewers battling for $3,000 in cash and prizes. By Colin Anderson. WITH THE EXPLOSION in popularity of craft beer in our region, it’s no surprise that more and more people are looking to replicate their favorite styles at home. Those who brew at home are always giving away samples and asking friends and family what they think of their brew. Now they have an opportunity to perhaps win a little cash as well. The 1st Annual Homebrew Competition will be held Saturday, May 17th at the Greyhound Event Center in Post Falls. More than 30 amateur brewers are expected to be pouring at least 50 of their own creations, and you have the opportunity to help decide the winner. “I’m excited to see what people are brewing and what the people’s choice will be,” said Levi Knight, owner of Two Knights Homebrew in Post Falls. Homebrewers will donate up to five gallons of their craft to the Spokane Eastside Reunion Association, a non-profit organizations that helps disadvantaged youth. Brewers who submit their beers will be judged, but not by professionals, rather fans who attend the event will ultimately decide the winner. The
brewers of the top 10 beers will take home cash prizes, and the winner will also have the opportunity to have their beer brewed professionally at Waddell’s Pub in North Spokane. “Homebrewers are definitely influencing our local breweries,” said Knight. “A lot of breweries are taking ideas and recipes from homebrewers who frequent their tap rooms.” Admission to the event is $20 and includes 5 tastes. Non-drinkers can get in for $10 and there will be complimentary soda and water. Food is also available for purchase. The event runs from 11am to 6pm. For those who have never brewed before, the staff at Two Knights is more than happy to introduce anyone to the art of brewing. “It’s a great hobby and if you can make tea, you can make beer,” said Knight. There will also be live music by the band Strange Brew.

Industries of the Inland Northwest, Inc.
I FEEL VERY BLESSED BY MY JOB. Every day I am in contact with wonderful people through Goodwill’s service programs. I am inspired by many of the life stories I hear, and the joys we celebrate with people when they get a job, increase their hours, or find the courage to take a new position. On March 6, Goodwill Industries celebrated our annual Awards and Recognition Night. Four hundred employees, participants, board members, community partners, and friends and family gathered to celebrate the successes of 2013. Several award recipients hail from the close-knit communities of Coeur d’ Alene and Ponderay. Please congratulate these individuals and organizations when you see them in the community.

Industries of the Inland Northwest from 1982-2008. Johnson selected Salassi from this year’s nominees, saying “I would be proud to see [Becky] win the legacy award. She reaches out and takes what we have been doing and improves and brings it to other areas of our territory. She also has new ideas and goes that extra mile to see they happen. ” Becky consistently promotes Goodwill by participating in events such as the Annual Festival of Trees hosted at the Coeur d’ Alene Resort. Thanks to their excellent efforts, Goodwill’s entries have become an anticipated element of the show each year. Becky is often sought out by other Facility Managers for guidance in merchandising. Becky leads her facility with passion and a dedication to excellence. Becky’s success is attributed to her willingness to embrace not only essential functions required of her position but also a demonstration of the Goodwill -- a culture of true inclusion and team.

Delicious food, great beer and a lot of fun. By Colin Anderson
IT SEEMS JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE you go you can find an overpriced, semi-authentic Irish pub. The good ones are hard to find, but one of the better Irish pubs I’ve come across is right here in Coeur d’Alene. ‘Kelly’s Irish Pub & Grill’ can be found in the middle
reasonably priced. If you’re just looking for an appetizer, try the Irish nachos or the chicken wings. Prices run about $4 to $10. You can get authentic Irish dishes like Bangers and Mash, Guinness Stew, Shepherd’s Pie, and Irish meatloaf. If you’re not into traditional Irish fare, there’s a great selection of tasty sandwiches. You can order a half or a whole, but good luck finishing it. Try the Irish Dip, or my personal favorite, the ‘Donegal’. It’s grilled turkey breast, bacon and melted provolone cheese sandwich served on toasted sourdough bread with a cranberry spread. Kelly’s claims to have “The best Reuben this side of Ireland” and many agree. Once you’ve finished your meal, grab another pitcher and zigzag your way to the back of the restaurant. There you’ll find a nice pool table, a couple chairs, and a giant flat screen T.V.

Recipe the Cobb
This take on the Cobb Salad was created for Litehouse by Chef Paul Folksted of the Western Oregon Culinary School. Cobb Salad was the invention of restaurateur manager, Bob Cobb, who in 1926 at The Brown Derby restaurant in Los Angeles found a way to use up leftovers!
Remember This A good way to remember the components is to use the mnemonic EAT COBB: Egg, Avocado, Tomato, Chicken, Onion, Bacon, Blue cheese.
Chef Paul’sCobbSalad GatherIngredients: • 3 hard cooked eggs, peeled • 8 bacon slices • 1 head romaine lettuce, leaves separated and torn into bite-size pieces • 2 cups chopped watercress (tough stems removed) • 4 cups diced cooked turkey or chicken • 2 avocados, pitted, peeled and diced • 2 tomatoes, chopped • 1/4 pound Litehouse® Blue Cheese Crumbles • 1 jar Litehouse® Bleu Cheese Vinaigrette or, • Litehouse® Big Bleu or, • Litehouse® Chunky Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Bacon Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Original Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Yogurt Bleu Cheese • Litehouse® Lite Bleu Cheese

ShopinStyle Farmers’ Markets THE BENEFITS OF BUYING LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. WITH SPRING RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, many are full of anticipation awaiting the opening of the local Farmers’ Markets. There are many reasons people choose to purchase their food from these local vendors – freshness, nutrition, and the desire to support friends and neighbors. But there are many reasons beyond these that are good reasons to purchase produce and more from your local Farmers’ Market vendors. Taste and nutrition. Some reports state that the average distance that some food travels from the farm to your kitchen is 1500 miles. This means that the fresh taste can also deteriorate. During this travel time, which can take up to a week in some cases, sugars can turn to starches, plant cells shrink and the produce loses some of its nutritional value as well. Because locally grown food does not have to travel far, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions as well as packing materials. Supporting your local farmers. Statistics show that less than one million Americans state farming as their main source of income. It is becoming more and more difficult for farmers to make a living off the land. In short, farmers are a vanishing breed. But local farmers who sell their product directly to consumers are able to get the full price without the cost of a middleman, thereby maximizing their dollar for their product. By supporting your local farmers, you are not only getting fresh food, but also helping contribute to the livelihood of the local farming industry. That, in turn, also benefits the community as a whole. Buying local keeps your dollars circulating in the community. Getting to know the farmers who grow your food builds relationships based on understanding and trust, which is one of the foundations of strong communities. Preserving our land. The more that we can support our local farmers, the better the likelihood that we too will be preserving the beautiful open spaces in our communities. By purchasing locally grown food, you are doing much to preserve the future of the agricultural landscape. Protecting your family’s health. By having firsthand knowledge of where your fresh food comes from, including how it is raised or grown, you are able to purchase food that you know is safe from chemicals, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and is not genetically modified. Local farmers can offer produce varieties bred for taste and freshness rather than for shipping and long shelf life. Visit your local Farmers’ Market this spring! The benefits extend far beyond the tastiness of fresh food!

Easter
A celebration with diverse traditions worldwide, but united in meaning. By Patty Hutchens.
IT’S CRAMMED WITH TOURISTS, vendors, and shops. It feels very commercial, even during the holiest time of the year; yet for Christians it is the most sacred place on earth. When I visited Jerusalem in 1983, I was in awe of many things, but in particular walking those steps Jesus walked during his final moments. The Stations of the Cross are now shops and privately owned buildings, with the final stations, heavily adorned with ornamentation, being located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It was Christmas Eve day in 1983 when a local man took my friends and I on a short walk by some of these stations along Via Dolorosa. The man stopped at the fourth station, only recognizable by the roman numeral IV on the building. Here he said, “I don’t know if it’s the actual spot or not, but I do know that 25 years ago I used to buy hummels here.” It was certainly not what I expected, but had it not been for this self appointed tour guide, I may have missed it all together. Walking those same steps along Via Dolorosa as Jesus did was truly a moving, humbling experience that I will never forget. Some skeptics wonder if certain events happened in the exact spot the tourist guides showed to us. To me, it did not matter. I was in Jerusalem. The celebration of Easter, which this year falls on April 20th, is the most sacred day among Christians worldwide. It is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus following his crucifixtion. But just how it is celebrated is different throughout the world. In the United States we have Easter bunnies and colored eggs. While these instantly conjure up the image of an Easter celebration, if one really stops to think about it, what could they possibly have to do with the most sacred day in Christian religion?

While nothing is known for certain, there are theories that abound; the most popular of which stems from the fact that in ancient times an egg symbolized new life. In fact, eggs used to play a large role in pagan celebrations marking the beginning of spring – a time of hope. But for Christians it means more than new life. It is a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus. So why do we decorate the eggs? This tradition goes back 800 years and originated because eggs were a food Christians were forbidden to eat during the Lenten season. At the end of the Lenten season, it is said that people would then decorate and eat them to mark the end of their penance and fasting. The tradition of the Easter bunny is one that originated with German immigrants who came to this country in the 1700s and stems from the fact that the bunny was an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. While foreigners may think our traditions are odd, there are several other countries around the world whose traditions are equally unique and, without explanation, may not appear to be sacred at all. But a look into their meanings can help to understand some of their celebrations. In Poland, one needs to make sure they are wearing his or her rain gear on Easter Monday. The tradition, referred to as Smingus-Dyngus, has young boys gathering buckets of water, hoses and water guns to try to soak girls with water. It is said that girls who get drenched with water will be married in the upcoming year. The water is a symbol of baptism and the tradition is believed to have stemmed from the baptism of Polish Prince Mieszko which took place on Easter Monday in 966 AD. A Hungarian Easter tradition is a twist to that of Poland. There they perform what they refer to as ‘sprinkling’ on Easter Monday. Instead of water, boys will sprinkle perfume or scented water on a girl and ask for a kiss. The symbolism behind this ritual stems from the belief of water being not only cleansing, but also healing and was also believed to have induced fertility. For Norweigens interested in reading a good crime novel, Easter is a time they look forward to with anticipation. For nearly a century, publishers in Norway choose Easter time to relese crime novels. It is said to have started when a publisher promoted its crime novel on the front page of newspapers in Norway during the 1920s. While it was an ad, people were fooled into believing it was actual news. While not related in any way to the Easter celebration, it is one of the most publicized traditions in this Scandanavian country.
The Stations of the Cross are now shops and privately owned buildings, with the final stations, heavily adorned with ornamentation, being located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Traveling to Bermuda on Easter? You will be treated to colorful skies as people fly kites symbolizing Jesus’ ascent into heaven. In Rome, the Pope devotes Good Friday to observing the Way of the Cross, a solemn devotion which recalls with mindful affection the last stage of the journey that Jesus walked before he was crucified. This takes place at the Coliseum in the heart of Rome. Easter Sunday the Pope celebrates with the thousands who travel from around the world to congregate in St. Peter’s Square waiting for the Pope’s blessing from the balcony on this sacred day. While Easter traditions may differ throughout the world, one thing remains constant. Christians gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the gift of eternal life.

Family Promise of North Idaho is making a Difference to Homeless Families in the Community. By Teri Burch of Family Promise of North Idaho.
The Third Annual Family Promise of North Idaho Golf and Walk Event will be the afternoon of Friday, May 16 at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course. This fundraiser is one of the major events to sustain the nonprofit FPNI’s operational costs. Family Promise of North Idaho is a nonprofit agency helping families with children who are experiencing the crisis of homelessness. FPNI helps families change their focus from finding a place to sleep every night to seeking employment and housing. The agency provides goal directed case management and accountability. The day facility has workspace, computers, phones, and a children’s play area. In order to qualify for the program, each family must undergo a thorough background check, ensuring our trained volunteers and the guests are safe. FPNI is a unique sheltering agency in that we partner with local congregations who host the guests for one week at a time. People in the congregation are trained to be coordinators, and they in turn train congregational volunteers to help provide and host meals. Others are trained to be overnight hosts. For one week the churches have been turned into homes. Each family has their own rooms, unlike a hurricane shelter where beds are back to back.
April 2014 | Coeur d’Alene Living Local 39
By being in congregations, it is a way for the community to be a part of the solution to those who are experiencing homelessness. Board Member Mary Robinette states, “It is rewarding to be a part of a program that directly helps homeless families set up a sustainable home and life. The leadership makes it easy for volunteers to know what to do. I have been volunteering at Family Promise of North Idaho for seven months now and the small difference I make is tangible. Working with the other volunteers adds an element of teamwork. Volunteers can truly SEE the needs, followed by the transformation.”
THE EVENT The Kick-Off for the Golf/ Walk event is April 15 at Paddy’s Sports Bar beginning at 6pm. There will be computers and help for online registration.

Nathan Newby
LAKE CITY HIGH SCHOOL. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. IF YOU ARE A LAKE CITY High School sports fan, you surely know the name Nathan Newby. A senior, Nathan has played football all four years; was a member of the baseball team his first three years; and has been on the track team for two years. Nathan will graduate this spring with six varsity letters and currently has an impressive 3.8 GPA. His competitive nature and desire to work hard towards a goal have been instrumental in his success, as evidenced by the fact he was named All-League Wide Receiver last fall. And he is hoping to repeat that success this track season. “Currently in track we have a really fast sprinting squad and have a very good chance to become state champions,” said Nathan who also is an academic letter winner. Although very athletic and dedicated,
Nathan said his biggest challenge in the athletic world was getting his name out there. “Mitch Bevacqua, who is a year older than me and now plays baseball for the University of Washington, played in front of me throughout my high school career in football and baseball. To me, he was the best athlete in Coeur d’ Alene while he was here,” said Nathan. “It was hard being behind the best player, but it only made me better. Nathan said he is especially grateful to Coach Blaine Holom, who Nathan says taught him to believe in himself. “He is one of the main reasons I am going to play college football,” said Nathan, grateful for the support and the opportunity. Sara Chalich
COEUR D’ALENE HIGH SCHOOL. BY PATTY HUTCHENS. WHETHER IT IS SPORTS or academics, Sara Chalich is an all star. The Coeur d’Alene High School senior has received academic awards each semester throughout high school, and her basketball skills have not gone unnoticed either. Sara was named to the All 5A Inland Empire League girls’ team, was selected to compete in the 21st Annual Jack Blair Memorial Basketball game and the 11th Annual Idaho High School All-Star basketball game. But for Sara the highlight of her basketball career was when her team won state this year. “My teammates and I have put in so much hard work, commitment, and dedication. We kept getting cut short, but this was our year,” said Sara. “Everything that we have worked for was for our one goal, to win a state title. We did everything we could in our power to play our hardest. Through all the sweat, tears and blood we accomplished our goal and won.”
After experiencing shin splints when running cross-country, Sara decided to focus solely on basketball. And she’s glad she did. “Playing with my teammates made it that much more memorable,” said Sara. “Being part of such an amazing team is the most rewarding part about the game. I play for them because without each other, we wouldn’t have gone as far as we did.” Sara has been offered a basketball scholarship at Carroll College and is exploring all her options before making her final decision. Whatever she decides, though, it will include basketball. She plans to pursue a career as a pediatrician, something she has dreamed of since she was a young girl. “To know that I can give care and make a positive impact on a child’s life is rewarding to me,” said Sara.
BASKETBALL “Being part of such an amazing team is the most rewarding part about the game. I play for them because without each other, we wouldn’t have gone as far as we did.”
She credits Coach Dale Poffenroth and her dad for motivating her thus far. “My coach has shown me that nothing is handed to you, you have to earn it,” said Sara. “My father has taught me that if I make a goal and set my mind to it, nothing and nobody can get in the way and stop me.” Favorite food: “Boneless Chicken Wings, but nothing beats my mother’s chicken and rice.” Favorite teacher: “Mr. Amos because he sees me for who I am and is always there to give me advice on my life challenges. He helps me recognize the things that I choose to do now will affect my future. I know that if I ever need someone, he will be there waiting to hear my stories.”

Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Weekend Getaway. By Jessica Herbig.
“If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it.” - President Lyndon B. Johnson - Upon signing the Wilderness Act in 1964 THE WILDERNESS ACT OF 1964 PAVED THE WAY (or unpaved the way) for a swath of wilderness known as the Scotchman Peaks Wilderness. It meanders through 88,000 acres of peaks and valleys, the highest of which is Scotchman, the highest point in Bonner County, Idaho summiting at 7,009 ft. Collectively, the Scotchman Peaks run from Idaho into Montana and have arguably some of the best hiking around for all skill levels and abilities. You can access trailheads heading into the wilderness area from many points beginning in Sandpoint heading east on Hwy 200 to the Montana border and beyond. The hike up Scotchman Peak starts at Trail 65 outside Clark Fork, Idaho. Grab some sandwiches on homemade bread at the local Pantry in Clark Fork, fill up your water bottles, and head north on Main Street, turning into Mosquito Creek Rd #276. Turn right at the junction of Road #2294. You’ll go a little over a mile, looking for signs for Trail 65. Turn left on Road 2294A and turn left again. The road ends at the trailhead. There’s a small parking area, which also makes a great camping spot. The climb is short, but strenuous. Four miles one way with an elevation gain of approximately 3,700 ft. The amazing views start in the lower meadows and continue up to the summit. Don’t
forget your camera, but keep a good hold on it because there’s some mountain goats up there that might try to take it from you! If you go in mid-August, you might catch the huckleberries when they are ripe, but don’t tell anyone you heard it here. Huckleberry picking spots are a closely guarded secret in this area. If you are looking for a hike with a faster pace, or maybe want to try some offroad ATV/UTVing, try the Strong Creek Hike just outside the boundaries of the proposed Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Area. Featured in Backpacker Magazine and online at www. backpacker.com/destinations/hikes/912026, Strong Creek Hike #444 has an upper and lower trailhead, accessible off of Trestle Creek Road or out of Hope, Idaho. The trail has been cut wide for ATV and motorcycle
Huckleberry picking spots are a closely guarded secret in this area. use, and with a collective elevation gain of 3,800 ft. over 7.4 miles, it’s quite a bit less strenuous than the Trail #65 hike. Both of the mentioned hikes, as well as most of the hikes in this area, cut through bear country. Make sure you’re carrying appropriate protection from wild animals while you are out hiking, and it is always recommended to hike with friends and let someone who is staying behind know your destination. If you plan on camping, leave that information with someone as well. It’s easy to get turned around even if you are familiar with the area. It’s all about having fun when you are out in the wilderness. This summer, consider getting out and enjoying the amazing natural wonders in beautiful North Idaho!

Health&Lifestyle Want to Lose Weight? It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle. By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Trainer, FAST Program Director at PneuThera.
YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT, but with so many diets out there how do you know which one is right for you? Do you go Paleo, try the Atkins diet again, join Weight Watchers? There are dozens of diet plans on the market, and many promise to magically shed fat off your body. Although many diets are ranked high for initial weight loss, their long-term results are sorely lacking. After trying a “diet”, accelerated weight gain is experienced when we return to our old habits. So how do you quit on-and-off dieting for good and switch to a healthy lifestyle based on nutritious food and regular exercise? First, it’s important to address the reasons you want to lose weight, why you’ve been unable to maintain a healthy weight in the past, and what drives you to eat unnecessarily. Addressing the eating habits that lead to excess body fat can help reduce the consumption of calories
at the wrong times. Healthy weight loss is not simply a calories in/ calories expended equation. Eating 1000 calories in burgers and fries will affect your body differently than the same amount of calories in vegetables and lean meats. Changing eating habits and increasing physical activity are the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. Keeping a food diary to calculate amounts of calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and salt can serve as a jumping off point. It can open your eyes to the eating patterns that are keeping you unhealthy. Once you determine where you are in excess, pick one thing to remove from your diet. Whether that be soft drinks (diet or regular), sugar, snack foods, or white flour products, you will start to notice the changes in your body. Assimilating one adjustment at a time will bring you to a balanced healthy diet which will follow

you long-term and lower your risk for disease. Purposely take it slowly to make sure you are adjusting physically and emotionally to the lifestyle changes. Emphasize lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and some whole grains. Spread your calories out, consuming 5-6 small meals a day. Pay attention to the ingredients and nutritional content of the food you buy and evaluate them based on calories and nutritious value. A successful, long-term weight management plan must include an increase in activity. Plan for at least 30 minutes of cardio exercise every day. If you are not sweating and can carry on a normal conversation throughout your workout, up the intensity. It is the single most important element in making your cardio work for you. Strength training should be added to your workout 3-5 times a week. Resistance can come from dumbbells, weight machines, elastic tubing or bands, milk jugs, cans of soup, or your own body weight. Results occur when you train consistently over time. Increase your workload gradually and lift each set to fatigue. Weight is not the only measure of your success. Weigh only once a week and concentrate on how your clothes fit and how much better you feel. And most of all, enjoy your new lifestyle.

Take your wellness into your own hands. EVERYONE HAS HEARD OF YOGA, but did you know you can consider yoga as medicine? An inexpensive alternative for everyone, the healthy and the sick? Yoga is a new path. A path that you can walk down to take your health, wellness and future into your own hands. It has been known for centuries that practicing yoga regularly improves digestion, circulation, balance, mobility, posture, breathing, metabolism, relaxation, sleep patterns, immune functions, as well as establishing control of one’s body and life. But not everyone can head down to the local yoga studio and just start stretching. Physical and mental barriers are extremely common. Didn’t you just say “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga” or “I have a bad back” or “I need to lose weight first.” Yoga is for YOU and yoga therapy can get you started on that path to feeling good again! Indra Devi, a renowned ambassador of yoga, contended the “yoga is an art and science of living.” The art lies in the practice-based evidence, the mastery of therapeutic skill and the dialectic that occurs as therapist and client explore personal yoga practice as the vehicle for healing and a way of being. According to Dr. Timothy McCall, internal medicine physician and medical editor of Yoga Journal, not every yoga class is appropriate for students with injuries. Those students with special needs should instead try yoga therapy. “Yoga therapy is typically conducted oneon-one or in small groups. Often, a session more closely resembles an appointment with a physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist than it does a typical yoga class.
What sets this healing modality apart from others is the focus on linking movement to deep, rhythmic breathing. Another difference is the emphasis on relaxation. In fact, when someone is gravely ill, a therapist may suggest that the entire practice consist only of breath awareness and relaxation until the patient is ready to tackle more. APPROPRIATE TRAINING If you have a condition that requires knowledge of the physical body, like back pain or arthritis, find someone with substantial anatomy training. If you have a more serious medical condition—such as cancer, heart disease, or lupus—you’ll need a therapist who understands the disease, the effects of medications, and contraindications to practicing. Look for someone who has sought additional training in your specific condition or who has a background in a health care profession, like nursing or physical therapy. AN ACTIVE YOGA PRACTICE An effective yoga therapist must have this. AN INSPIRING APPROACH A good yoga therapist is knowledgeable, but a great one will be able to design a personalized program that motivates you to practice on your own. The key to success in yoga therapy is to feel connected to your own healing.” - Timothy McCall, MD Dr. Christina (Tina) Hefley, Physical Therapist, RYT200 - Yoga Teacher. Falling
A major health risk as people age. Article courtesy of Coeur d’Alene Hand Therapy & Healing Center. FALLS ARE A RISK no matter what our age. However, did you know falls are a major source of disability as we age? Repeated falling is a primary reason people move to an assisted living facility. Here are some tips to keep you and your loved ones safe. First, look at the physical factors that cause falls. Abnormal walking patterns from injury, braces, poor posture, stiffness and pain throw the posture and body out of balance, increasing the risk of falls. Inner ear problems, blood pressure changes and medications are common causes of dizziness that may require medical attention. Falls may be a sign of dementia, but often are a result of mental fatigue and stress which result in poor judgment and impulsivity. When we feel stressed, we often are not “in” our bodies as our attention is elsewhere, making us more prone to accidents. Recognizing these factors can help you be aware so you can lessen the stress and get needed rest. Look at the environment and identify what are “accidents waiting to happen,” uneven ground, stairs, curbs, getting in and out of the car, throw rugs, transitions from carpet to tile, or small pets. The bathroom and kitchen are notorious for fall risks.
52 Coeur d’Alene Living Local | www.CDAliving.com
What You Can Do: Assess your home and yard. Do a “walk through” and identify potential danger areas. Have a clear path in your house and yard. Remove slipping throw rugs or other obstacles such as hoses across the walkways or yard.
Yes!
I want to be flexible, out of pain and active!
People often feel dizzy or weaker when getting out of the shower. Getting on and off the toilet can be harder as joints get stiffer. Grab bars can be helpful for people of all ages. However, be sure they are placed where you need them. Consider getting a seat in the tub or shower, hand held shower, walk in shower or tub, or a commode next to the bed at night
Repeated falling is a primary reason people move to an assisted living facility. In the kitchen a tall stool can save your back and provide a spot to rest. Be sure to wipe up spills immediately. Often people fall while climbing on a chair to reach up high. Put commonly used items in easy arm’s reach, lighter objects up higher and seldom used on top shelves. Use a reacher to access high and low items. Be sure the entries to your home are safe especially in wintertime. Use cleats on shoes and keep walkways and stairs clear. Install sturdy rails on stairs both inside and out.
Through our "Pain Free Living" program we make a donation to local charities as our way of giving back to the community.

Home&Essentials GETTING HIRED
Tips to help you stand out. Ruth Wimberly, SPHR of Wimberly HR Consulting, Sandpoint. IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR when many people, particularly students, are looking for a summer job. In my 25 years in Human Resources I’ve interviewed close to 1,000 people. I have talked with many amazing applicants who have been great additions to their employers. I’ve also interviewed applicants who, had they been better prepared, may have secured the job. Below are some of my personal suggestions that help make an applicant stand out: Tie your resume to the job for which you are applying – For example; your resume objective says that your goal is to work as a Medical Assistant. Sending this resume for an opening for an Assembly Technician makes the recruiter think that you are just sending out resumes everywhere and are not that interested in this particular job. Compile a list of the businesses to which you’ve applied and keep it near or on your phone. It is disconcerting for a recruiter to call an applicant and identify the business only to have the applicant respond with unintelligible answers or not remember that he/she has applied at the business. Know something about the business to which you’ve applied and be able to answer why you want to work there. It shows that you have done your homework. Stay focused during the interview. That doesn’t mean stare at the interviewer but avoid looking around the room, watching people that might walk by, or playing with items on the desk. Leave your cell phone in your car or turn it off so you won’t be tempted to respond to a text or call. Wear clean and tidy clothes even if the job for which you are applying will require you to get dirty. Don’t bring family members to the interview. It may be difficult if the babysitter cancels, but the interview is your time to showcase your skills. Children and family members will be a distraction. Sending a thank you via email or regular mail or calling is an excellent and not obsolete practice after an interview. It shows that you have courtesy and the skills to follow up which are important attributes that every business needs. Make sure your voicemail is set up on your cell phone. A recruiter will try calling you only so many times. You may not always get the job you want initially. But every job provides you with the learning experience of gaining new skills and abilities that assist you in your career path.

HOME IMPROVEMENT GOES OUTDOORS April tips for starting a vegetable garden. By Julianna Verboort. Photos courtesy of Mavis Butterfield.
TREES ARE BUDDING, the earth is warming, and it is time to make a garden plan! What should gardeners accomplish this month? Your Northwest locale dictates specifics, but in a nutshell, April is time to decide what to grow, plan your garden space, and start seeds indoors. Geographically specific gardening resources are abundant, so guidance is close at hand! Mavis Butterfield, a gardening and home life blogger at OneHundredDollarsAMonth. com in Gig Harbor, WA, offers these suggestions for April: “I like to get a jump start on my cucumber and zucchini seeds by starting them indoors under grow lights. The trick is to not plant them too early mid April works best for me - so they are ready to transplant to the garden in midMay. I also like to start a few herbs indoors. Basil, Cilantro, and parsley come to mind. What am I direct sowing into the garden? Carrots, celery, kohlrabi, beets, chard, kale and asparagus roots.” Butterfield uses wood pallets for garden boxes. Look for heat-treated palettes, versus chemically treated wood. Clear the ground; lay landscape fabric below the pallet; fill with garden soil, pushing the soil in between the wood slats; and plant with lettuces, herbs, peppers, strawberries, or any number of above ground vegetables. Butterfield’s blog offers a pallet garden tutorial. The Bonner County Gardener’s Association presents events and education for gardeners in the eastern edge of the Northwest.
Check out their website at bcgardeners. org. University of Idaho’s Extension also provides a wealth of resources for Idaho and eastern Washington growers; find them at http://web.cals.uidaho.edu/ idahogardens. New gardeners are tempted by the wide array of gardening options and food choices and can quickly find themselves with too many projects and not enough yield for the effort! Advice from experienced growers is to start small and investigate before planting. • Know your climate and your soil. Invest in a gardening reference book specific to your climate. • Experts recommend a laboratory soil test every three years, with home testing in between. United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Offices offer soil testing for a small fee. • If organic gardening is your goal, use organic amendments rather than agricultural chemicals. • Learn from successful gardeners in your area. Search online for local gardening bloggers; check city and county parks programs and local universities for Master Gardener advisory sessions or gardening classes. With a little research, some gardening friends, and tapping into local resources, you will soon be on your way to fresh homegrown food!
ARE YOU FULLY COVERED?
Schedule an annual review of your policies with your agent. By Patty Hutchens. SPRING IS IN THE AIR. It inspires us to open the windows, clean out closets and take that lawn furniture out of storage. But spring is also a good time to perform an annual review of all of your insurance policies. After all, a lot can change in a year’s time, and you want to make sure you and your family have proper coverage. Insurance reviews serve several purposes, the most important of which is to make sure that in the case of a catastrophe, whether it is a fire in your home or the sudden death of a family member, you and your loved ones are not left with the stress of an unnecessary financial burden.
The amount of life insurance one needs changes significantly throughout life. You may think you have proper coverage for your home, but you may be surprised that many people are significantly underinsured. Have you been in your home for more than a few years? That alone is a good reason to review your homeowner’s insurance. What would your home cost to rebuild today? Chances are it is far more than that for which you originally insured it. Does your current policy insure you for replacement value? It’s a good question to verify with your agent. Have you renovated your home? Made
improvements in the kitchen or bathroom? Even purchasing new furniture and finally getting rid of that furniture from your college days can have an impact on the amount of insurance you should have. And what about those sentimental items? Your grandma’s wedding ring? Your wedding ring? The cost of gold has risen significantly over the last few years and so has the value of those keepsakes. By providing your insurance company with an appraisal, they can add a rider onto your policy to specifically cover jewelry or other items of significant value. By making an appointment with your insurance agent and answering a list of questions, you can have the peace of mind knowing that your belongings are covered and you will not be left financially strapped in case of a catastrophic occurrence. Life insurance is another area that should be reviewed annually. Should there be a change of beneficiaries? Is the policy in line with your financial goals? The amount of life insurance one needs changes significantly throughout life. Are the children grown or do you still have college education expenses in your future? Has there been a change in employment? What are your plans for retirement? All these and more significantly impact the amount of life insurance one should carry. So as you are cleaning out those closets and drawers this spring, gather up those insurance policies and make an appointment with your agent. You’ll be glad you did.

VA LOANS
Local mortgage company helping vets clear the confusion. By Colin Anderson.
“There’s a lot of fine print, and many of the vets we see get frustrated and give up. That’s where we step in, clear things up for them and work with the VA personally.”
GETTING APPROVED for a mortgage can be a daunting task for anyone. Credit scores, income documentation, work history, and so much more. This can be especially difficult for families of service members currently overseas or veterans who are eligible for a VA loan but aren’t sure where to begin. The VA loan is 100% government insured financing with no monthly mortgage insurance. It is available to qualifying active service members, veterans, National Guard members, and spouses who lost their husband or wife in combat. It’s also the only single loan program available with 100% financing and without monthly mortgage insurance. The paperwork can be confusing, but a local mortgage company is working to help our veterans get the home they deserve. YES Mortgage in Coeur d’Alene is owned by Sandy and Mel Wach, a Vietnam veteran himself. The couple works with current and former military members to wade through the often confusing process. In fact, Sandy is the only broker in North Idaho who is a ‘Certified Military Housing Specialist.’
“We hear from vets who come in and how they’re treated elsewhere and it really inspires us to help them,” said Mel. One common misconception is that the VA loan is a one time shot. Mel, Sandy, and their staff often work with the VA to have their clients’ veteran’s entitlement restored. Even if a veteran used their entitlement twenty years ago, if the original loan is paid off, vets can be eligible for a second VA loan.

Another unique offering from YES Mortgage is a VA manual underwriting program. This program is especially beneficial for younger soldiers who might not have had time to establish credit before enlisting but have steady income and can afford monthly mortgage payments. “These young men and women might not have rental history or credit history because they entered the service so young, but with this program we can help get them into their own home,” said Sandy. With advancements in technology, those currently deployed can be involved in the process, and often their family members can move into a home while the military member is still overseas.

“Knowing their family is in their own home provides some comfort and relief for service members abroad,” said Sandy. YES Mortgage receives many referrals from Newby-Ginnings, a recently launched organization that helps local veterans with everything from gas, clothing, and household goods to advice and training from community members. Mel and Sandy would like to encourage community members to learn more about the organization by visiting their website www.newby-ginnings. org or finding them on Facebook. BIRD SAFETY
Keep your feathered friend out of the kitchen. By Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital, Sandpoint.
BIRDS ARE THE ULTIMATE sensitive creature when it comes to the environment. Remember the old canary in the coalmine? Birds are so sensitive to dangerous gasses such as carbon monoxide that miners carried them down into the deep and watched them with anxious eyes. Whatever birds inhale or ingest quickly absorbs into their lungs and other organs. My research with the ASPCA uncovered some important precautions for bird owners.
about anything that comes in a can or powder can be toxic to our feathered friends.
The kitchen is the gathering place for our whole family including our animals. But it is surprising how many injuries we see in birds from ceiling fans, hot burners, blenders, boiling water, and even hot cooking oil.
Poisonous foods and plants
Cooking with your feathered family nearby is not a good idea and here are some reasons why: Cookware on a heated stove Teflon and other non-stick cookware emit harmful fumes. Sadly, I have seen the tragic consequences of burning and smoking cookware killing pet birds so quickly that we have had little time to respond. Even smoke from burning fats can cause rapid death in pet birds. Other fumes, such as aerosol sprays, non-stick sprays, perfumes, oven cleaners, and cooking gas are equally dangerous. Just
Keep the birds out of the kitchen and use an exhaust fan or open a window before cooking Store toxic items out of your bird’s reach Cleaners, pesticides, mothballs and medications are obvious things to exclude from your pet’s proximity. Mistakes are made quickly and sometimes tragically. The list of problem substances is immense: avocados - onions - garlic - chocolate coffee - tea - yeast dough - salt - tomato leaves and stems (green parts) - potato leaves and stems (green parts) - rhubarb leaves- - aloe (Aloe vera) - Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata)- cyclamen species - dieffenbachia species - English ivy (Hedera helix) - ficus species - kalanchoe species - madagascar dragon tree (Dracaena marginata) - philodendron species - devil’s ivy (Epipremnum aureus) - schefflera species - snake plant (Sansevieria trifiscata). To be sure, limit everything other than those substances that you know are completely safe.

SUGAR SUBSTITUTES CAN BE TOXIC TO YOUR PET THE SUGAR SUBSTITUTE xylitol is found in many things we use on a regular basis including toothpastes, mouthwash, sugarless gum and some cough medicines. Many diabetics and those on a low-carb diet often use xylitol in their diets. But did you know it could be deadly to your pet? According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, signs of the toxicity in your dog can manifest in as little as 30 minutes. And for a 20 lb. dog, as few as two sticks of chewing gum can be fatal. What makes it so harmful? It is said that the ingestion of even a small amount of xylitol will cause a rapid release of insulin and result in hypoglycemia in pets. Signs to watch for include vomiting, weakness, uncoordinated movements, depression, decreased potassium, seizures and a coma. Keep your pets safe and be aware of what they can get into when you are not around!
