EXQUISITE GIFTS FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN
PUBLISHER United We Stand YOU DRIVE DOWN THE STREET and see the flags at half-mast. If you are like me, you stop and wonder just which of the latest tragedies this represents. In the last several months we have been faced with senseless violence every time we turn on the TV. And with the recent murders of our police officers, this violence has risen to a whole new level. When will it stop? As a community and a society in general, it is time we start learning to respect one another in spite of our differences. When God created each one of us, He did so by making us each unique from one another. We should rejoice in our differences, not condemn one another because of them. During this political season, we need to elect leaders who can step up and bring forth unity and solutions to our problems. We have seen enough of hurtful rhetoric and leaders who commit crimes only to have their hand slapped. Let’s start fostering a culture that works together as one and is divided by few. And let’s start today. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

FOREVER OR TRANSITIONAL? HOW YOU VIEW YOUR HOME WILL IMPACT YOUR DECOR NOT ONCE HAVE I WALKED into a home and thought “I could just move right in and wouldn’t have to change a thing!” Every one of us puts our own special touches on where we live, whether it’s intentional or not. Special touches such as paint colors, artwork, furnishings and décor make our home what we like, but certainly do not appeal to everyone. We can determine if a home is a “forever” home or if it’s just a “transitional” home. People that have their forever homes put a lot of effort into the finishes, and there are always unique, sometimes quirky, aspects that make it theirs. Some of those unique aspects can be smart investments or some can be detrimental to resale value. However, if it’s your forever home, you don’t care about resale value, so it can be as unique as you want, right? On the flip-side, if you don’t plan on staying in that home forever, you shouldn’t do something too crazy because it makes it harder to sell. Smart things that people do with their forever homes are things such as spending money on quality finishes such as high end cabinetry, trim and wood flooring or energy efficient window coverings. These are all smart investments because if you

did decide that maybe you wanted to sell your forever home, you would get a return on that investment. Real estate agents love advertising these features when listing homes because these are investments that people do not just splurge on if they are trying to fix it up enough to make it look appealing. Then, there are the quirky, unique things that maybe aren’t as smart of an investment, but still make your forever home yours. For example, one home I visited had a closet that was transformed into a fish tank. These homeowners had cut a rectangular opening in the wall, framed it with glass and created a huge, built-in fish tank. The storage space of the closet then became the water filtration system, the actual tank, and all the paraphernalia that it took to keep the tank running. That’s not exactly something you do with the thought that you’re increasing the home’s value for resale. In fact, a potential buyer may walk in and think of the money they would have to spend to convert that back to a closet.

That being said, whenever you are looking to replace cabinets, countertops or change any interior finishes, you need to ask yourself if this is going to be your forever home and you can choose whatever you want, or if this is a transitional home and it will need to appeal to potential buyers. This makes a big difference in how wild patterned your countertops may be or which paint color you pick for your cabinets versus maybe going with a more neutral stain color.
Real estate agents love advertising these features when listing homes because these are investments that people do not just splurge on if they are trying to fix it up enough to make it look appealing.

ESSENTIALS
THE TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT THE AMERICAN DREAM BY SARAH POLYAKOV
AFFORDABLE IF WE ALL LOOK DEEPLY into our hearts, what is the most important part about the place each of us calls “home”?
with the ability to easily go off the grid. Buyers can fit them with solar panels, rainwater collectors, and composting toilets.
For me, home is about the relationships that are facilitated under my roof. Home is my family, my friends, and connection to others. In other words, home is more about strong and loving relationships. The roof under which all this love and connection is possible is important. But the roof is not to be confused with the connections themselves.
However, I freely admit that most families like mine would have a very difficult time packing their entire lives into 163 square feet. Fortunately, most tiny homes companies have much larger options. I have seen some tiny homes that are closer to 1,000 square feet. The key is these homes are built to maximize every inch of space within them.
A Delightful Way to Downsize
But more importantly, these homes are affordable, and they cater to those who do not want to be saddled with a 30-year mortgage. For most of us with young families, the largest expense in our budget is usually the mortgage. Tiny homes provide a viable alternative to over-extending one’s monthly budget. These homes provide an opportunity to own a home free and clear, which has the potential to create more financial security for families.
About six years ago, I came across the tiny house movement and have been a fervent enthusiast ever since. Since I was first introduced to the idea of living large in a small space, several companies that build tiny homes have made a name for themselves. For example, a company named Tumbleweed Homes manufactures a beautiful home that is only 163 square feet. Contained within 163 square feet buyers will find a bathroom with toilet and shower and a kitchen with refrigerator, stove, and microwave. The home also contains a living room, a small bedroom and a sleeping loft upstairs. Tumbleweed’s homes are built

When we live authentically we are not settling for less since it is our relationships that nurture us.
Living authentically and affordably does not mean that we also must settle for less. While we might need to readjust our expectations in order to make a transition to a tiny home, it can be done. When we live authentically we are not settling for less since it is our relationships that nurture us. As long as family and friends surround us, we are already living the American dream.

THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE

IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene challenges the best of the best. By Patty Hutchens
IRONMAN COEUR D’ALENE 2016 is right around the corner, and soon some of the world’s top athletes will descend upon our community to take part in one of the most grueling and challenging events in all of sports. In its 14th year, IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene has become a favorite of many competitors in large part due to the beauty of the location.
town on Coeur d’Alene Drive. One of the most popular places for spectators to view the event is City Park due to the fact much of the competition passes by there several times throughout the day. Just how long it takes to complete the course depends upon the athlete, but most professionals complete it in approximately eight hours.
This year there is likely to be an even bigger interest due to the fact that 2016 IRONMAN Texas is closed. For IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene, this means an additional 25 new qualifying slots for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii that takes place on October 8.
The race, which takes place on August 21, was historically held in June. And although there are no guarantees when it comes to the weather, the later date does bring warmer water temperatures and a longer time for athletes to train during the summer months.
Competitors come from all over for the privilege to compete in one of the most beautiful venues around. And for spectators, it is always a fun day filled with cheering on the athletes.
The success of IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene is due in large part to the literally thousands of volunteers who make it happen. Be sure to mark your calendars for this fun and exciting event as you witness some of the world’s greatest athletes pushing the limit to achieve what for many is a lifelong dream.
IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene begins with 2.4-mile swim in Lake Coeur d’Alene, followed by a two-loop, 112-mile bike ride and of course the grueling 26.2-mile run that brings the athletes through the neighborhoods along Lake Coeur d’Alene, Tubbs Hill, Centennial Trail and back into

WHATEVER YOUR STYLE MIGHT BE Making a statement with your home furnishings BY COLIN ANDERSON MUCH LIKE THE COLOR AND STYLE of your car, the decorations and furnishings in your home make a statement about what kind of person you are. Adventurous homeowners vary up their interior every few years according to the latest trends while traditionalists often decorate in a classic or rustic manner. No matter what your style, the father-daughter team at Hayden Furniture Depot will have a piece that will fit perfectly in your home.
modern and contemporary,” Matteri said. Having moved his seven children and himself to the area 25 years ago, Thompson recognizes what a great place he gets to call home. Along with the furniture store helping contribute to the local community, Thompson also owns the Hayden Exchange Thrift Store which gives a portion of all sales to local schools. When shopping local it’s a unique experience to have the owners of the business working directly with you, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Hayden Furniture Depot. Thompson and Matteri recognize they are part of the community and believe that all their customers are important whether they’re after a single accent piece or redecorating an entire home. “We always go above and beyond to make sure each of our clients is fully satisfied with our service and products,” Matteri said.
Opened in February of 2015, the Hayden Furniture Depot is a true North Idaho family business. Father Steve Thompson has a background in construction. With 40 years of experience working as a carpenter, superintendent and project manager, Thompson has worked with homeowners and architects and has seen varying design concepts first hand. Daughter Nicole Matteri brings interior design, planning, layout and trend expertise to the store. “Our store goes far beyond the typical furniture store; it is an experience you won’t find at big box stores. Our customers are taken away when they walk through our front door,” Matteri said.
If you’re strolling through the store and can’t find exactly what you are looking for, the team at Hayden Furniture Depot can more than likely seek it out for you. There are dozens of unique items on their website and Facebook pages, and as design elements change, expect the latest in trends to appear in the store as well. Whether vintage or modern, rustic or clean lines, you’ll find what you’re looking for at the Hayden Furniture Depot. You’ll also be supporting a locally owned business that invests back in its community. Take a peek, and perhaps you’ll be inspired to change up your style.
One step into the Hayden Furniture Depot and you will see what Matteri is talking about. The store has an excellent flow and includes elements from all kinds of style. It’s one of the few places that you will find northwest, shabby chic, rustic, farmhouse, lake cabin and western elements all in one place. There are sofa sets, chairs and ottomans, large desks and work spaces as well as home décor. Matteri especially loves vintage pieces and enjoys seeing older items repurposed and displayed proudly in someone’s home. If you haven’t a clue on where to get started with your home décor, Hayden Furniture Depot offers on-site home design consultations.

In today’s world where violence seems to be a daily occurrence, there are people who are using the power of prayer to support those who put their lives on the line each day to protect us – our law enforcement officers. And his death was not an isolated incident. The recent violence against

Although the program started back in 1998, it is gaining in popularity in recent years and is now in 24 states across the nation. It’s founder, Chaplain Sgt. officers around the country has impacted families, communities, fellow officers and beyond. According to Janine Shepard of Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene, 109 law enforcement officers in Bonner County were adopted in prayer at this year’s National Day of Prayer. People took names and pledged to pray for the officer regularly. “We are changing the climate of how people feel about the law enforcement, praying for their safety and encouraging people to come alongside of our law enforcement,” said Shepard. To show support through prayer is simple and yet powerful. Getting the community involved through Adopt-A-Cop is one way that we can support our officers, and it is an easy process. the Adopt-A-Cop program advises that there be a commitment from a church and law enforcement agency to go forward with the program. The group also recommends that those seeking to start a chapter reflect on certain Biblical passages which include Psalm 127:1, which reads: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” They also refer to Proverbs 14:15 – “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.” The next step in forming a chapter is to assemble a team of advisors to provide direction and feedback to the mission of the group. And in order to obtain the buy-in of churches and law enforcement agencies, it is vital that you share ways that the group will enhance the ministry of the church while also supporting the officers in the community.
Hope
The final step is to devise a plan to enlist prayer partners and law enforcement officers who want to participate in the program. Adopt-A-Cop also advises that churches obtain approval from their pastors and that before moving forward there is also approval from the appropriate law enforcement officials.
“I am a wife of a kind hearted, community caring, devoted father/husband/son/brother/uncle and law enforcement officer. I send my husband out every evening with only 1 wish, and that is he returns to us in the morning. I ask for prayers for him along with all his fellow brother and sisters in blue. Please pray for us daily and all the Polk County sheriff officers. Thank you.”
Our law enforcement officers are facing challenges like never before. Their pain and suffering is found in the requests for prayer that are posted on the Adopt-ACop website. And it is not just the officers asking for prayers but their family members as well. One post from September of 2015 reads:
Another request for prayer reads, “I am actually a retired officer...and the widow of an officer killed in the line of duty. It has been a moment-to-moment challenge to deal with all of this and others in my former department as well as my husband’s who look to me for spiritual guidance because of the stand I have taken and the faith I have shown. Honestly, as I try to help my 12-year-old son navigate this, I’m flat running out of strength and energy myself. I need reinforcements. I’m pouring out more than I am getting refilled. I keep praying for clarity of direction, but I still am not sure. Thank you!” Yes, the struggles are many and the fear is great. And while we turn on the news to more stories of violence, let us remember that there is hope. That hope is found through the simple act of prayer. Let us come together as a community to pray for those who protect us each and every day. To find out more about Adopt-A-Cop, log onto adopt-a-cop.org.

Road Warriors for a Cause Ride or donate to the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association’s Food Drive and Poker Run for Vets By Jani Gonzalez OUR NATION’S VETERANS OFTEN SUSTAIN INVISIBLE WOUNDS of mental illness, physical disabilities or come across hard times financially. The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) in Post Falls combines a love for motorcycle riding and helping vets in their first annual Food Drive and Poker Run. The ride is a chance to have some fun, play a game of long distance poker, create awareness and fundraise for the needs of the vets in our region. Participants will ride together from Spokane Valley to Hauser with stops along the way to collect canned goods and get a card for a game of poker. In this new fundraising event, anyone with a motorcycle or vehicle can participate in the ride. “(In) a lot of the things we do, we try to incorporate a family environment. Not everyone who wants to participate has a motorcycle, which is why we are allowing vehicles,” said John Johnson, the commander of the CVMA’s North Idaho Chapter 13-1. Johnson served tours in Desert Storm and in Bosnia- Herzegovina and is a retired former combat vet with a disability. He had been looking for a family friendly group that combined motorcycle riding with helping local vets, and the CVMA is just that: “Vets Helping Vets.”
CDALivingLocal.com
32
The CVMA: Vets Helping Vets The CVMA began in the early 2000s out of the need for the companionship and understanding of what vets experience while in the military. It is an international association now, and North Idaho is the first chapter of the thirteenth state in the association to form. “We’ve branched out to five chapters: three in southern Idaho and one in Lewiston,” Johnson said. “It started to (create) a community for those who ride as a hobby and have been combat vets.” When Johnson joined – it was that camaraderie that he was looking for in addition to an association that was family friendly.
“A lot of us are looking for understanding as a whole. We’re looking for like-minded people,” he said. “The CVMA is also very family oriented and that was important to me.” Full membership to the CVMA requires past military combat duty and the love of riding a motorcycle. Support members are those who have served in the military but not in combat; auxiliary members are spouses married to a full or support member, Johnson explained. Membership is not dependent on gender or branch in the military. “You don’t have to have a Harley – we have Yamahas, Hondas, BMWs – we’re just a motorcycle association,” he said. They only require that motorcycles should be of 500 cc or

higher for highway safety. Where the proceeds go: “IGY6” Veterans have a unique experience in the military that they can’t easily impart to civilians. Often, veterans may go unnoticed by the community with their struggles to return to civilian life, work and provide for themselves or their families. The CVMA has made it its mission to help local veterans with their needs. Throughout the year, the CVMA helps on average five to ten families per month. With their constant goal of relieving stress, they help with anything as little as gift cards for a night out or financial help with groceries or bills. Currently, they are
in the midst of planning a financial management class. People find out about the CVMA via word-of-mouth or by a referral from within the VA system, Johnson explained. “Any place a vet might be, we have cards there,” he said. “The chapter works with 12 other programs, and if we can’t help, we find the resources to help.” They also raise money to donate to the Goodwills across the Inland Northwest and St. Vincent de Paul’s services for homeless veterans of North Idaho. Although people donate throughout the year, the CVMA has been helping an increasing number of veterans and their families each year. To make the most of donated funds, they partner with local businesses to get the best prices when they shop for others’ meals. All money received from any donation or event goes to helping vets. “We’re all volunteers. We all donate. One hundred percent of event proceeds go to take care of vets in the community,” he said. Although this is the CVMA’s first Food Drive and Poker Run, it has been raising money for years to help vets and their families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition, they support the Community Action Partnerships and 2nd Harvest, two major food banks in Northern Idaho

and Spokane respectively. “It’s important for something as small as a good, home cooked meal to help relieve the stress (of the holidays),” Johnson said. “If a vet needs help with rent or groceries, we do that yearround, not just during the holidays.” For Thanksgiving last year, they provided holiday meals for eight families. For Christmas, they assisted 14 families; for nine of them, they purchased gifts for children younger than 18 years of age. “We went shopping for them for things they would appreciate, making sure they had a good Christmas and one less stress to the families,” he said. They have at times assisted vets with bills to help make ends meet. It’s part of what Johnson called “IGY6,” which is a military term that means, “I got your back.” With “;IGY6,” the semi-colon, he said, is a symbol for individuals struggling with mental illness that ended with suicide; it represents a pause and a continuation. “(In grammar,) the semi-colon is a pause where you can stop it with a period or continue. Twenty-two vets a day commit suicide. We work with a lot of people, and our goal is to relieve stress,” he said. The Ride The ride includes much of the region that the CVMA Chapter 13-1 covers.

Members hail from the northern counties. The starting point for the Food Drive and Poker Run is the Timber Creek Grill near the corner of Argonne Avenue and Trent Avenue. During the run, there will be five stops: the Deer Park VFW Post, Elk VFW, Popeye’s in Priest River and Miller’s in Spirit Lake where they will have a booth. The final stop is at Curley’s in Hauser. In addition to playing a hand of poker at each location, there will be tickets sold for a raffle and a 50/50 drawing. “At each stop, if you’re playing poker, you can draw a card and make up a hand. There will be a meet and greet collecting canned foods. At Curley’s, we’ll draw for the raffle, 50/50, and see who has the best hand,” Johnson said. There will also be a barbeque to purchase food. Part of the barbeque proceeds will be donated to the event. The CVMA Food Drive and Poker Run will be September 3 at 10am at the Timber Creek Grill in Spokane Valley. The ride is $15 per vehicle or $10 with three donated canned goods. Each hand of poker is $5; one-quarter of the collected money will go to the highest and lowest hands. PARTNERING FOR PROGRESS IN KENYA HOPE, A “HAND UP,” AND PLUMPY’NUT
MOST TRAVELERS TO Africa return with amazing stories of grand vistas, vast wilderness, and teeming wildlife. Volunteers who visit southwest Kenya with Partnering for Progress (P4P), a Spokane, Washington based non-profit, see spectacular sights on a six-hour ride through Kenya’s Great Rift Valley to the rural villages of Kopanga/ Giribe. The valley is bordered by massive escarpments, contains a chain of volcanos and is traveled by red-cloaked Maasai tribesman. Many volunteers add a wildlife safari to their itinerary.

FEATURE STORY
Those aren’t the stories, however, that brighten the voices of P4P volunteers like Beth Sheeran, an emergency room nurse at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, who has traveled to Kenya twice. Their stories are about the wonderful people they helped and befriended — people who live in deep poverty with rampant malnutrition and illness but are warm, resilient and hard-working, and who move the visitors gifting them with a new perspective.
In 2007, Mainer, her husband Dr. Michael Mainer, Ivers and Ivers’ son Nick, volunteered at a medical clinic in Kopanga. For two weeks, they assisted Alice Kephas, a Kenyan nurse, at Kephas’s primitive understaffed clinic. The clinic had no running water and no electricity. Medical supplies were in short supply. Women delivered their babies on mats on a dirt floor. A steady stream of patients arrived with malaria, malnutrition, skin conditions, diarrhea and HIV/AIDS.
One of Sheeran’s stories is about Mama Quinter. Blinded by the measles as a young girl, Mama Quinter can’t leave her hut without help, and it’s hard to care for her tiny malnourished twins. Mama’s husband has another wife and other children — polygamy is common in traditional Kenyan communities — and the family’s meager resources are stretched thin. Many of the poor farmers in the area support their families on $1.00 a day — less than we might leave in the tip jar at Starbucks after buying a $4.00 latte.
The baby who so touched their hearts didn’t survive and on the flight home, Ivers and Mainer made a commitment to help. Mainer recalls, “We gathered our friends around our dining room table and decided to start a non-profit.” In 2008, with a grassroots effort they founded Partnering for Progress. “Our fundraising attempts were things like garage sales.” P4P began sending volunteer teams of doctors, nurses, dentists, health educators and nutritionists to Kopanga and helped build a modern clinic there.
Despite these difficulties, Mama is upbeat and thankful for her family. You can’t help but smile at her joyous nature in a video where she holds her incredibly cute babies, Quinter Tausi and Princess Taiwan and says, “God blessed me with two children.”
P4P also attacks the root causes of poor health in the region with lifechanging programs that battle malnutrition, award school scholarships, create clean drinking water sources and combat poverty. Rather than a one-time “hand out” of food or aid, these programs give a “hand up” that improves the long-term health — physical and economic — of the community.
Today, P4P volunteer teams visit Giribe — a village near Kopanga — twice a year. With their Kenyan health care counterparts, they provide medical and dental care at the Ogada Health Center, assess community health and exchange medical knowledge.
The organization also has a year-round presence in Kenya. Seth Okumu, P4P’s Program Manager in Giribe, coordinates P4P’s programs, assisted by another Kenyan, Charles Atha Otieno. Charles weighs babies and runs P4P’s Power of Milk program. The Power of Milk
While she expresses deep appreciation for the Plumpy’Nut nutritional supplement that P4P volunteers bring her babies, like so many Kenyans that P4P helps, she is looking for a “hand up, not a hand out.” Mama Quinter knows how to operate a knitting machine and dreams of someday knitting school uniform sweaters to help her family. Above: Power of Milk—Grandma Feeding Baby Plumpy’Nut
Beth Sheeran tells the story of a mother determined to help her tiny sickly baby. “One woman was hiking across the border from Tanzania just to sit in and listen to the lessons. She wanted to know how to feed her child appropriately. The people are hungry for the knowledge of how to care for their children.” Each week, the young mother trekked six miles, toting her baby in a sling, to sit with other caregivers and hear nutrition lessons to help her baby thrive—even though she wasn’t officially enrolled in P4P’s Power of Milk program.
A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out
Infant undernutrition causes much of the poor health and poverty in Kenya. “We see kids that are 1 or 2 years old and weigh only 8 or 9 pounds — birth weight for American kids,” Sheerhan says. “They are very vulnerable to any illness that comes along. Their brains can’t form correctly, so they can’t perform in school.”
Stacey Mainer, a nurse practitioner in Spokane, tells the story of another severely malnourished baby who inspired Stacey and her friend, Sandy Ivers, a retired teacher, to found P4P. “This poor little girl was probably the second most malnourished baby I had seen in my entire life,” remembers Stacey, who had seen many nutrition-deprived babies during her travels as a medical volunteer. “It just broke our hearts.”

program at a time. Mothers and babies gather weekly at the Ogada clinic for nutrition and health lessons that help the moms fight their babies’ undernutrition. Severely malnourished babies go home with Plumpy’Nut, a nutritional supplement provided by the Kenyan government that supports rapid weight gain and can save a starving child from illness or death. The program is also social. “After the class they get a meal. It’s really fun watching all of these caregivers with their babies. They sit around on the grass eating their meal and talking and engaging with each other,” explains Mainer. “They support each other on a really personal basis. It’s like a support group!” The resourceful and entrepreneurial Kenyan caregivers even organized a “table banking” group to pool their money to buy goats. Matching funds from P4P help the families obtain goats more quickly. Each week, Charles Atha Otieno weighs the babies. Once a child reaches a normal weight for their age, they remain in the program for another six months and then graduate. When a baby graduates, P4P throws a party and presents the family with two chickens as a graduation present! This life-changing “hand up” means that the family will have eggs — a protein source for a better diet and an income source. So far, the Power of Milk program has saved the lives of more than 35 babies.
Partners in Education Beatrice, a young girl determined to get an education, is the main character in one of Stacey Mainer’s stories. Beatrice and other determined kids like her motivated P4P to start a scholarship program for kids who otherwise couldn’t attend secondary school—kids like Rose Anyona, Ephy Adhiambo and Daniel Masaga. When Mainer and Ivers first met her, Beatrice was helping in the medical clinic in Kopanga as a caregiver for several orphaned babies. She was 16-years-old and already had a child. Beatrice dreamed of going to secondary school, what we call high school, but that seemed out of the question. In Kenya it’s especially hard for girls to go to school. Ivers explains, “Often the girls won’t go to school because the families are large and only so many kids can go to school. Girls are then pressured to move on and get married.” And it’s expensive. Paying tuition of as much as $600 per year isn’t possible for families surviving on $1.00 a day. Beatrice’s school dreams wouldn’t die. When tuition assistance was offered by the clinic where she worked, Beatrice arranged for her mother to watch her children — by then she had three. Beatrice enrolled in school and has persevered, even when donor assistance ran out, forcing her to change schools several times. Now 24-years-old, Beatrice is a senior, about to

graduate fourth in her class, and hopes to go to college. Mainer says, “Beatrice’s story shows the strength and resiliency of Kenyan women, and she reminds us why it’s so important to do what we can. She is truly hope.” Each year, P4P’s scholarship program brings hope to 27 children in Kopanga/Giribe. Partnering Against Poverty Poverty is at the root of many of the problems in Kopanga/ Giribe. “Improving the economic health of the community should improve everything,” Mainer explains. “If you have more money you improve your health because you can pay to go to the doctor to get medication, pay to have clean water and a latrine, and you can pay for your child to go to high school.” In 2015, P4P began an economic development project that helps local farmers increase their income by increasing the yield of their corn crop. The pilot project gave 10 local farmers a “hand up” with seed, fertilizer and agriculture education. The farmers saw an average increase in production of 300 percent, and Eunice Adhiambo had the largest increase — her harvest increased from five bags of corn previously to 19 bags. Eunice will use the income from her extra corn to pay school tuition for her children — providing more hope for the next generation. In return for the seed and fertilizer, each farmer gave P4P a 198-pound bag of corn. The corn was sold to help fund the Power of Milk program and to award an additional school scholarship — a step towards making these programs sustainable. Tell Your Own Stories Donations and two yearly fundraisers — an auction and a
Spokane Civic Theater benefit — generate much of P4P’s funding. The 9th Annual Into Africa Auction will be held in Spokane Valley on Oct. 1, 2016. Attending this fun event supports P4P’s key initiatives like the Power of Milk. Volunteers are needed at the fundraisers and for P4P’s committees. If you have dreamed of going to Africa, you can join one of P4P’s service teams on a volunteer trip to Kenya. Doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists, teachers and engineers are needed to treat patients, teach health and nutrition classes and help with clean water and economic development projects. Even if you don’t have those specific skills, there’s a place for you on the trips — everyone has talents that can help. The volunteer trips are self-funded but are a great way to see Africa while helping people and seeing a different perspective. “There’s a saying in Kenya that I love. Americans have all the watches, but Kenyans have all the time,” says Linda HagenMiller, head of P4P’s Communications Committee. “We are always in such a hurry to get things done. They are a little more laid back. They want to talk to you, get to know you, and learn about your family, children and work.” Make a donation or volunteer, and give a “hand up” to Kenyans like Mama Quinter, Beatrice, Eunice Adhiambo and the young mother from Tanzania. Once you visit Kenya, you’ll come back with your own stories about the amazing people who do so much with so little. To learn more, visit P4P’s website at partneringforprogress.org. IT’S A QUESTION WE PONDER as a child, a teenager, a 20-something and often in midlife as well: “What do I want for a career?” Should I follow in my parents’ footsteps and help run the family business? Perhaps going away to college for a few years will help introduce me to a career I hadn’t considered, but what if I don’t want to leave home? An industry that is thriving all across North Idaho are the “trades” and luckily for us, we don’t have to go far for a quality and affordable education. Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) technicians are in high demand. With so much new construction in Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, HVAC companies are having a difficult time finding enough bodies to do the work. “I have very much enjoyed my 41 years in the HVAC trade,” explained Gary Friebe, owner of Comfort Heating and Cooling in Post Falls. “It has provided my family and I a very good and steady living over the years. It has been very rewarding for me to be able to meet and build relationships with so many of our customers.” Both Lewis-Clark State College and North Idaho College offer certificates and four-year degrees in the trades. As with any education, the more advanced your degree, the better pay, but going rate for a journeyman HVAC

employee is often around $25/hour — a wage hard to find in our communities. Friebe says there are four factors that he really enjoys about his career: “Satisfying work by helping others, good pay and benefits, something different every day and a great way to interact with many different people.” Installation of heating and air conditioning units in new commercial and residential buildings is keeping most companies busy now, but we’ve all seen firsthand the ebbs and flows of the housing market. During slower times of construction, installations might be down, but there is still plenty of work doing yearly maintenance and service. It can get brutally hot and frigid cold in North Idaho, and a career in HVAC will help you rest easy knowing you are helping people stay warm in winter and cool in summer. There are careers of all kinds, and if you’re young and planning your future or older and looking for a job change, a career in HVAC offers stability, good pay and work out from behind a desk. “There is a great opportunity for young people in this trade, and (there are) some good local trade schools in the area with a shorter schooling time than traditional colleges,” said Friebe.

ZAK RECENTLY WON A $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP FROM WOMEN’S INDUSTRY NETWORK
NOT JUST FOR MEN
(WIN), AN ORGANIZATION SUPPORTING WOMEN IN THE COLLISION REPAIR INDUSTRY.
NIC PROGRAMS LEAD TO ROLE-BREAKING JOBS
BY KAYE THORNBRUGH PHOTOS BY TOM GREENE
WHEN KRYSTYNA ZAK was growing up, her dad was a regular Mr. Fix-It. She used to follow him around in his shop, asking if she could help. Once, he gave her an old radio to take apart, and though she never did manage to put it back together, she enjoyed seeing what it was made of. It was like pulling apart the pieces of a puzzle to see how they fit. Zak’s enrollment in the Collision Repair program is notable because she is one of a growing number of female students in traditionally male-dominated programs. This year, female students are enrolled in Collision Repair, Welding, Computer Aided Design, Industrial Mechanic/Millwright and Outdoor Power/Recreational Vehicle programs at NIC. For a while, when she wanted to change careers, Zak considered becoming a nail technician as an outlet for her creative side. But
she said collision repair helps her tap into her creativity as well. NIC’s nine-month Collision Repair Technology program teaches the fundamentals of repairing damaged vehicles. It’s one of a handful of one-year collision repair programs in the Northwest, and the only one in Idaho. Upon completing the program, students emerge as body technicians or auto refinishing technicians (painters). “Krystyna [Zak] has been such an inspiration to our Collision Repair Technology program,” said Cal DeHaas, program instructor. “She was without a doubt the respected leader within our team. What sets her apart from others, I believe, is that she genuinely cares about people and always puts others’ needs ahead of her own. Krystyna’s personality is so refreshing and contagious.” Zak already has a job lined up for when she finishes the program. She’ll work as an estimator for a collision repair shop in Coeur d’Alene, and she’ll also have the opportunity to do some hands-on work in the shop. She’s looking forward to a new career. For information about NIC’s Career and Technical Education programs, such as Collision Repair Technology and Computer Aided Design Technology, call 208.769.3468 or visit www.nic.edu/tech.

Health & Lifestyle BREAKING UP WITH YOU
An Open Letter to the Gym By Heidi Canda ONCE AGAIN IN LIFE, my coping skills had come under attack. I was being attacked by my mind and thoughts. I have a history of depression and anxiety and could have tried to guess which situation had triggered these emotions. Or, I could assume that I was destined to this disorder based on certain chemicals in my brain. Either way, it’s not anything I have ever wanted to dig up and conquer. I rather cope and work through it. But that is the biggest problem. Depression is not about getting out of the mud, pulling up your boot straps and moving on. Depression is debilitating if not dealt with from outside sources. If this means medication so be it; if this means therapy so be it.
I thought I had come to a point in my journey where I needed to unload some of the things that triggered this particular attack. Money, kids, work, marriage, eating right, getting to the gym were all things that were on my mind. Were these the things causing my anxiety? How could I change my situation and inability to cope for the better? Well, I couldn’t give away the kids or quit my marriage, and I needed money to eat - so, that left the gym. I told myself that I would just take a break from the gym — a summer break — and would start again when the kids went back to school. This would give me a few more bucks in my wallet and would free up time for

Would I miss feeling strong lifting over 250 pounds? Yes. Would I miss some of the most inspirational people I know? Yes. Would I miss the constant accountability? Yes. The day I decided to quit the gym, it was going to be the start of my recovery. Except that once I made the decision, I received a text from them the same day! I was so shocked with the text I couldn’t even respond to it. It said, “Can you send me your Member of the Month questionnaire again? You won.” I had won — I had been picked as the Member of the Month. Really? But I was going to break up with the gym. I was about to put my membership on hold for the rest of the summer. Did I deserve this award? Sure, maybe yesterday or last week, a month or six months ago. I mean, all of my gym family deserves this award. But that day I didn’t deserve it because I was quitting. I had to think about it for a minute; I had to cope with this. I couldn’t say, “No thank you. Not today, think of me again in September.” I decided that I couldn’t quit. Instead, I had to rethink my plan for recovery.

It also reminded me that working out at the gym helps my mind. I don’t know why, and once again can only guess what happens to the chemicals in my brain when I workout. I feel physically different when I leave the gym. Before a workout, I can be cloudy and have a hard time focusing. Once my heart rate increases and the sweat starts dripping, my mind clears up. The world around me becomes a little less hazy. It also becomes a little bit more doable. With each workout, my mind continues to clear up. The text from the gym reminded me that exercise is key. Last, it reminded me that just because I love to go to gym, it is not an extracurricular activity or social hour. The gym is my medication; it is my therapy. On the day I was going to quit, I made sure I showed up ready to work instead. Because on that day, I was reminded that just because something is a lot of fun, it doesn’t mean it’s not hard work and unnecessary.

STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE IT CAN IMPACT MUCH MORE THAN YOU REALIZE BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, ACE PERSONAL TRAINER, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY
Another poor but common breathing pattern is belly breathing, which happens when the transverse abdominis muscle becomes weak, allowing the internal organs to bulge out of the abdomen, causing a large, weak abdomen, and no way for the diaphragm to find leverage with each breath cycle. When the lungs fill with air, the belly pushes outward, as the rib cage is now unable to expand. This further weakens and stretches the transverse abdomens. Another side effect of the weakened transverse abdominis and diaphragm is poor digestion. Without the gentle massage of the digestive system with each breath, digestion slows down considerably which causes gas and further bloating.

UNIQUE DREAM HOMES RETHINKING YOUR HOME By Jani Gonzalez The American public has gotten increasingly creative about its ideal dream home. Creativity and innovation are everywhere. The novelty we are seeing in the media is perhaps a form of rebellion against widespread suburban sprawl and McMansions. Or it is an escape from our increasingly connected culture. Those looking to build or simply to dream need not go far. Click on the television, and you are bound to find an episode about treehouses, majestic cabins, mansions on wheels or some other unique and non-traditional abode. The choices open up the imagination – even if it’s to change up your current home. There is also a plethora of dream home magazines. Small or large, the ultimate place to call home is in the eye of the homeowner. Today’s dream homes come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes, with a surprising budget too.

There’s something to be said for simplicity
CABIN OASIS The thought of a cabin conjures up a makeshift wooden single room in the forest. Have you seen the penny honoring Lincoln’s cabin? Customized log homes have come a long way from that one-room stereotypical cabin. Historically, cabins have been used seasonally for vacation, but Americans are increasingly calling it their primary residence. Styles include the traditional Craftsman, which is smaller, more traditional but with an intricate floor plan and exposed wood trim. The Swiss/ German Colonial Cottage is larger with exposed beams and has a much more detailed decorative exterior and interior. The Adirondack is more like a lodge because of its open floor plan. It’s very classic and incorporates the use of native materials. From rustic to majestic – it’s obvious that the cabin has grown up.

Floating Fortress A home on the water is another way to live within nature’s tranquility and gain a deeper appreciation for one’s surroundings. Prospective buyers should factor in dock slip fees, taxes, insurance and maintenance. Also, you won’t be able to park close to your home, so accept that you’ll be carrying your belongings more. You’ll also need to confirm that your floating foundation is sound. Logistics aside, living in a floating home can make it seem like you’re always on vacation. Homeowners can fish off their deck (or through a window!) or change their scenery by getting towed to a new location.
Treehouse Hideout
The customized treehouses of today are a grown-up’s version of the ultimate hideout. If you’ve ever watched “Treehouse Masters” on Animal Planet, you know there are a host of logistics to building a treehouse. Most important are the trees that will support the home. Treehouse dreamers will likely want a second opinion to verify the trees they’ve selected can carry the weight load of the house. From there, the design process can make dreams come true – from whimsical forts and castles to modern-looking homes lifted considerably from the ground. And the adventure only begins when the house is finished. Treehouse dwellers live at the center of nature, swaying with the trees and getting a bird’s eye view of it all.

m a e r D Tiny homes are growing in popularity as not only a dream home but a way to a better, simpler lifestyle. The homes are between 100 and 400 feet and are often built on trailers because of code regulations. Living in a tiny home is in direct opposition to the direction of the average American house which is up to 2,600 square feet. Most dwellers of tiny homes live with minimal debt, no mortgage and have more personal and retirement savings. Not only is a tiny home more economical, it’s more environmentally friendly too because it uses less energy. If the thought of living within your means sounds simple and appealing, a tiny home might be your dream home and new lifestyle.
Luxury Mansion Mansions are where one can have it all for the right price. Whether you buy new or old, mansions come with a large menu of amenities: swimming pools, tennis courts, bowling alleys, home theaters and spiral stair cases – these might just be a few of your favorite things. It’s where you can have a dedicated room for each of your activities. Mansions can be in the middle of the city or the country – it’s your choice. These homes are the trophies for deep pockets and are a display of pure wealth. They are the homes of the “Rich and Famous,” but a few ingenious individuals have become caretakers of second homes, and are able to “have it all” in return for their work.

The dream home is changing. Gone are the pie-in-the-sky options of a mansion on a hill. Those are still being dreamt of and built, but let’s face it, not many of us will ever afford that quintessential house on the hill. More and more, however, people are finding creative ways to get their ideal homes. In recent years, with a new interest in repurposing and being mindful of the environment, shipping containers are being used in a variety of ways to build small and large homes. More people are considering using them as a unique and relatively inexpensive way to customize their home.
In the past decade, however, the use of shipping containers has increased in part because of an ongoing surplus of containers available in the U.S. It is estimated that 90 percent of our goods are delivered from overseas via cargo shipping containers. Because the U.S. imports more than it exports, the containers have become abundant in supply. That surplus has made it an affordable building material. Its frugality combined with a cultural drift to repurposing items and being mindful of waste – whether it be wasted space or building refuse – has made shipping containers an alternative home affordable to many.
A brief history of shipping containers
Tom Woods, author of the blog, “Container Home Plans,” thinks the recent interest in container homes is possibly out of environmental and financial reasons. “I think there are many reasons why people are opting (for) this type of home, including both financial and sustainable. But fundamentally, I see it as a movement by people who are both environmentally conscious but also seeking financial independence through more affordable building materials,” he said.
For many of us, we don’t think much about shipping containers, but according to the blog, “Container Home Plans,” before the 1950s, the transportation and delivery of goods was laborious and slow. Malcom McLean saw an opportunity to change that and is credited with the concept of the shipping container. His containers could transport goods by sea and be immediately loaded onto trains, thus reducing the time it took to deliver cargo. Two decades later, people were already devising of ways to use them for other reasons. In 1987, Phillip Clark was the first to file a patent to use shipping containers as building material, but other builders and architects had already had similar ideas. The first recorded structure built from a shipping container was in 1998 in South Africa, called Simon’s Town High School Hostel. It’s a huge structure built to house 200 students, and it’s still standing, proving the longevity of the containers as building material. In 2006, the popularity of this new building material was showcased by architect Peter DeMaria for a home in Redondo Beach, California. The home, as many others, is a hybrid of traditional construction with the stacked containers attached. The house stands white and glorious and is comparable to any modern luxury home. Its sleek modernity hides the obviousness of the containers.
Designing the container home Building a home out of shipping containers is considered a strong and quick way to construct a home. Costs, of course, will vary depending on the number of containers used and their arrangement, but a home could cost less than $100,000. These steel boxes generally come in two standard sizes: They are either 20 feet or 40 feet long 8 feet wide and 8-feet 6-inches high. There are two routes for future homeowners: purchase your own containers and hire contractors or hire a company that specializes in these homes. You can purchase a container from a dealer. Prices range between $2,100 and $5,800, and you can purchase them new or used. When hiring contractors, they should be familiar with shipping containers and know that you’ll have to comply with local regulations and permits. Although deemed faster and more cost-effective,

it doesn’t mean it’s meant for everyone. Placing a container on top of a newly poured concrete foundation can conceivably happen in one day. However, building a home is still a fulltime project even if you hire professionals, and there are always details that will arise during construction. You’ll still need to budget. It’s advised to have a working budget plus an emergency one as there are always unforeseen costs with any building project. Next, location is probably one of the bigger factors to consider. A shipping container makes it easier to build a home in almost any location, however, you still need to consider the feasibility of building with the containers. Also, are they acceptable where you want to live? Will you live on or off the grid? Consider these points too as you search for property. You’ll also need to consider your blueprint and stick to it. Changing your mind about room dimensions after construction begins will cost you. There are several concerns particular to shipping container homeowners. One of the primary concerns, if not purchasing a new, unused container, is what did it transport? You can inspect your containers by checking for corrosion, holes and bad odors. These could be indicators of previous chemical loads. There’s also been some concern about the chemicals used to treat the flooring for the containers to withstand shipping overseas. Homeowners can remove the floor boards, tile over them or use a sealer to prevent contamination. The decision may ultimately depend on your budget too. Shipping containers are strong and built to withstand harsh weather. However, if your property is on a high location, you should consider building in noise reduction capabilities to damper the sounds of the wind. Insulation and proper ventilation are other factors to include in your design. You must avoid anything that will trap moisture as condensation will create mold inside the containers. Using shipping containers as an alternative building source will certainly allow you to create a novel home from the rest in your surrounding area. Do your proper research online and with the experts to gain ideas about what to do and not. Being innovative with building materials and design is a sign of the times, making a custom home accessible to more prospective homeowners.

The RefUrbished Bell Camper
New or vintage, these trailers look like silver spaceships on the road. Regardless of their sizes, they’re not known for having much storage, but they have a reputation for being lightweight and durable. If you are looking to rehab a vintage trailer, be mindful of the era and whether parts are available. Also, note if there is still a pipe frame and if it needs modification, and make sure there is a holding tank for waste water. Although they are lightweight, make sure your vehicle can tow it. New ones keep getting lighter and appear more akin to the airships that initially inspired their design.
We are in an age of getting what we want without spending a fortune. So it’s no surprise there is a do-it-yourself (DIY) trend to refurbish vintage trailers. The Bell Travel Trailers, popular in the 60s and 70s, are getting a second chance at the road. These tiny trailers are best for the lone traveler or two. Because they are vintage trailers, they aren’t readily available and will take some hunting, but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? Keep in mind that these trailers are likely in need of repair. Before purchasing, check the siding, frame and electrical wires before even thinking about the aesthetic changes you want to make. Give it your best inspection for mold and leaks before moving ahead. The refurbishing project will leave you gratified and your adventures waiting for you.

The Teardrop Camper
RVs basically encompass any mobile living unit and include motorhomes, travel trailers and camper vans. Class A motorhomes are the kings of the road. These are the ones that resemble tour buses. Class B motorhomes are campervans and are actually the smallest of the classes. Class Cs look like a van with a longer camper fitted on top. As the economy slowly strengthens, so do the sales of these recreational vehicles (RV). Instead of purchasing a vacation home, more people are opting for a second home on wheels. RVs range from being simply a space to sleep to luxurious motorhomes with all the amenities of a regular house. And for some, buying a RV is the way they’ll transition to retirement or financial independence.
The Luxury RV These are the smallest trailers and may just be a place to lay your head down at night. These trailers are typically between 4 feet wide and 6 feet long and go up to 10 feet long. They’re lighter and easier to tow and park without needing a larger vehicle for it. There’s been a resurgence of these models lately, and there are sleek designs gracing the road with aluminum or wooden sheathing. Some DIYers are even making their own from plans or a kit. For the babies of the camper family, many teardrop enthusiasts feel they can do more without spending a fortune. And, you’ll also become a de facto member of the teardrop trailer community, so look out for trailer gatherings around the nation, even the globe.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

Tranquility in the Water THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT the sound of rushing water that soothes us to our core. A beachfront oasis next to the ocean, the waves subtly crashing against the shore helping us fall into a deep sleep. Camping along a mountain stream with its steady trickle helping to mute the sound of sticks crackling and animals scurrying around the campsite. Think of the last time you went to a spa for a massage or other treatment. Was there a water feature near the entrance? It’s one of the most natural sounds to help our minds calm thought as we start to turn off stresses of work, family and finances. The plethora of rivers and streams across the Northwest give us opportunities to enjoy one of the most tranquil of water activities; casting a fly in hopes of seeing a fish rise.
And when you make that perfect cast with the fly delicately dropping to the water, it’s an amazing feeling, almost as amazing as bringing in a large trout on a lightweight rod.
expensive as you want, but looking like you just got done modeling for a Cabela’s or L.L. Bean catalog won’t help you with the most important part of fly fishing − the cast.
The diversity of our rivers is vast across the Northwest. Western Montana is well known for Blue Ribbon waters holding monster Browns and Rainbows. Anglers across North Idaho seek out feisty Westslope cutthroat and in the fall aggressive Dolly Varden or Bull Trout. Huge runs of Steelhead challenge anglers in Central Idaho, the Washington coast and the rivers of West and Central Oregon. Each species requires varying tactics, and if you’re new to the sport, the best place to begin the learning process is your local fly shop.
Casting a fly is unlike any other form of fishing. The cast must be delicate, yet sent with enough force to reach the eddy or rock on the opposite side of the river. Rhythmic motion while keeping the rod at ten o’clock and two o’clock.
Fly shops are run by people who’ve made their favorite activity into a business and most are eager to share their passion for the sport with those looking to get involved. As with many sports, you can gear up as technical and
Rod/Reel: Fly rods can cost more than a thousand dollars, but there are plenty of wellconstructed beginner and intermediate rods in the $200 to $300 range. This is your most important purchase as a good rod gives you control of the presentation and is the key component to accurate casting. Until you’ve progressed into an every weekend angler, a reel is mostly just a reel, so put your budget toward the rod, and worry about the reel later on. If you’re going after Rainbow, Brown, cutthroat, or bookies, a 4 or 6-weight fly rod will probably be your best option, but let the fly shop owners know in what rivers you’ll be fishing will help them narrow down a weight and length that will be right for you.

fly fish is getting the hatch right. There’s not a more frustrating sight than watching fish rise toward your fly only to turn away just as they are about to break the surface. Trout eat bugs, and different bugs hatch at different times of the season. Some days the fish are looking for tiny gnats to nibble on and others they’re gorging themselves on jumbo hoppers or mayflies. It’s a good idea to have a variety of bugs as well as larger and smaller sizes of each. Local shops will let you know what hatch is currently happening and can point you to what bugs to use. When out of the water, try to snatch what’s buzzing around you, and pick a fly that closely resembles it.

Gear: Hat, sunglasses, pliers and a multi tool are must haves. Polarized lenses will help cut glare off the water allowing you to see your fly much easier. A vest for carrying these things as well as flies, food, drink and net is also highly recommended. If you’re casting from a raft or drift boat, waders are unnecessary, and

depending on your tolerance of cold water aren’t always necessary in the warm summer months either. Sturdy boots or river shoes that can get wet will help you navigate to and from the river and keep your balance on slippery rocks. Casting classes or demonstrations are usually available at your local fly shop. Once you’ve got the pattern down, practice at home in the yard. Set up a small target at varying distances, and see if you can land your fly on a Frisbee or dinner plate. Move your position to under trees and near shrubs as you will likely encounter these things along the banks of your favorite river, and it’s good to practice so you don’t spend all day digging your hooks out of the brush. While there are countless rivers to explore across the west, perhaps you’re not looking to spend the entire week fishing, but a day or two on the water over a family vacation. The following are great vacation spots that give you close access to excellent nearby waters. Montana: Kalispell/Whitefish: On the doorstep of Glacier National Park, a beautiful area filled with incredible scenery. Golf, hiking, huckleberry
picking, and plenty of logging and railroad history to explore. Bozeman: Just 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, Bozeman blends high end shopping and dining with cowboys and ranchers. Several of Montana’s blue ribbon trout streams lie within 90 minutes of downtown. Missoula: Farmer’s markets, biking, paddling and a laid back vibe greet you in Missoula. Those who don’t want to fish can plop themselves in a tube and float the Clark Fork or Blackfoot while you chase huge Browns to the south in the Bitterroot Valley. Idaho: Coeur d’Alene: Relax in a vacation rental along Lake Coeur d’Alene or Hayden Lake, and enjoy small town charm. Try the Coeur d’Alene River or one of dozens of mountain lakes that dot the peaks. Take a trip over to the Shadowy St. Joe for amazing cutthroat action with few homes and barely a speck of a town along its banks. McCall: Another Idaho lake town that offers nature in any direction. Steelhead runs heat up in September in the rivers surrounding town and gives you a chance to reel in a monster fish.

Washington: Longview: A great base of operations for visiting the Oregon coast towns of Astoria and Cannon Beach as well as a short drive into Portland for big city experience. The Cowlitz River is world renowned for its spring Chinook fishing and summer steelhead runs but fish are abundant year round. San Juan Islands: A beautiful place to island hop and explore small and quaint communities, kayak and hike out to incredible ocean vistas. All the surrounding water means ample angling opportunities. Parking yourself in a stream and pitting yourself against a picky fish will test your patience but even if the fish aren’t biting, the sound of the water rushing around you is sure to help put you at peace. A new challenge in each body of water and season awaits and with each cast you are hopefully developing a love for this tranquil lifelong activity.

ONE NIGHT ONLY Villains take the Stage By Colin Anderson
THEATRE AND STORYTELLING often revolves around a protagonist: a character who goes through struggles and adversity but ultimately comes out on top in the end. We see this perspective over and over again in movies, books and on stage, but what about the other side, the characters who are trying to stop our hero from achieving their goals? You can see the world from their eyes in a special engagement from Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre which presents, “Bad Boys of Broadway.” The one-night only show will be held on Wednesday, August 17 at the Eagles Lodge in downtown Coeur d’Alene. “We want it to be something that feels like a full performance without any sense of overt formality for the audience. We want people to relax, laugh their faces off, and have a wonderful time,” said Artistic Director Jadd Davis. The show will consist of seven singers and actors accompanied by pianist Mary Trotter. You’ll see and hear some of your favorite villains from both screen and stage in this one of a kind performance. As “Bad Boys of Broadway” is being held at the Eagles Club, guests will also have access to the bar for this show. Limited tickets are available through Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre for this one-time event. You can purchase at the box office or through the CDA Summer Theatre website. “It’s wonderful to indulge in our dark side a bit. It’s no secret that villains are the most fun characters to play,” Davis said. Are villains truly evil or just misunderstood? Your perspective might change after the show. Take a night out and celebrate the antagonists who make our heroes look so good. It promises to be a night you won’t soon forget!
