PUBLISHER Valentine’s Day – It’s not just for sweethearts IT’S THE MONTH OF LOVE. Valentine’s Day is a time set aside to express our love for those close to us. But let’s take it one step further this year. Let’s not only express love to our spouse or significant other, let’s use it as a starting point to express appreciation and kindness to others all year long. It is said that it can take up to 10 positive comments to offset one negative comment. Whether it is a child picking on another child, a parent speaking in condescending words to their son or daughter, or co-workers criticizing one another, negativity can have a serious and possible lifelong impact on a person. This Valentine’s Day you can choose to make it a point to give positive reinforcement to family, friends and co-workers and even extend that sentiment to others in the community. Maybe write a thank you note to the community’s first responders and drop it off at the local police and fire stations. Send a note to your child’s teacher thanking them for the care they give your son or daughter. A simple gesture can make a big difference in the lives of others. The season of Lent begins just two weeks after Valentine’s Day. Perhaps you can carry on this “season of love and gratitude” into the Lenten season; who knows, it may quickly become a habit that makes not only others feel good, but yourself as well.

Practical Living

ESSENTIALS By Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center

DESIGN YOUR DREAM USE ONLINE RESOURCES AND SHOP LOCALLY

FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE a hard time putting together their home interiors, I can see why they shop online. I can understand that it’s easiest to see furniture arrangements and know what works together. I had a client recently tell me that she purchased all of her furniture online. Sure enough, when I walked into her house, I could have picked out the catalog page number that matched her living room down to the candle holders on the sofa table. She was missing a couple of key components to finish out her house— her locally purchased mattress was on the floor, so at least she had a place to sleep, but the headboard was lost in transit somewhere and a replacement one would arrive in four to six weeks. Ordering furnishings and interior items is difficult—after all you are paying additional for the shipping and waiting the transit time for their “white glove delivery.” And if you don’t like it, good luck sending it back to the vendor.

SUPPORT AND SERVICE

I’m not knocking magazine or online shopping. I think it is great to look in magazines, look online, tag things on Houzz or Pinterest. They are all great resources to get ideas of what is out there. Use these resources to help you be a smarter shopper. A smart shopper who gets the best customer service, support from a company that stands behind their warranties, and best of all, the items you buy are guaranteed to make it to you in one piece and on time. Use your resources and shop locally. Based on what you like, tear those pictures out of your magazines, pin them to your board on Pinterest, take your own pictures, or jot down notes on what looks good to you. Start a file of those items. That way, you have an idea of

what you want and can use that to convey to whomever you are purchasing from. Shopping local has its advantages when it comes to furniture and interior finishes. I have people come in all the time with a simple photo of a vanity or more complex folder of photos illustrating their dream kitchen. They may like the layout of a particular island in one picture, but also want the style of the base kitchen cabinets in another magazine photo. We will use those different styles together to create their own unique kitchen. The same rings true for furniture, tile layouts, rugs and most all interior finishes.

Don’t be afraid to pull out your iPad, phone, or old-school folder with magazine tear-outs to give us an idea of what you like. Also shoot a few photos of the room where you want to put the furniture, the cabinets you are replacing or the windows for which you need blinds. Take a few dimensions of the kitchen or bathroom you need cabinets in, the windows you want blinds for, and the area you’ll be buying furniture for. The more informative you can be, the more it helps us provide accurate renderings, information and pricing. You really do get the better end of the deal by shopping local because you will have the customer service and local support you deserve. (Oh, and you are supporting your local economy!)

ESSENTIALS

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

CONSIDER THEIR COMFORT

PROTECT YOUR ANIMALS AGAINST THE DANGERS OF WINTER BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL

PROTECTION

THIS YEAR’S WINTER IN NORTH IDAHO has taken its toll on more than just the heating bill. In our clinic, we have seen a tremendous amount of advanced arthritis; the cold often pushing limping geriatrics out of their comfort zone. Most dogs and cats need lots of help acclimatizing when the temperature dips down below 30 degrees. A friendly veterinary reminder, some advice and a little review of hypothermia are listed below.

• Clear snow and ice to help encourage small dogs to eliminate outside. Small breeds can be trained to urinate and defecate on paper or diaper-like pads indoors when weather is too extreme. Avoid outdoor trips completely when the temperature or wind chill reaches 0 degrees F. • Even indoors, your pet may feel the cold. Make sure that your dog’s favorite bed is in a location free from drafts.

• If your dog is allowed to play outside, monitor him closely. Bring him in if he starts to shiver or whine!

• Pet clothing can help to provide some additional insulation. Check out the latest in canine outdoor wear; from jackets to paw boots, there is both comfort and fashion in the pet world!

• Help arthritic or geriatric pets, especially when they are faced with stairs or ice. Slips and falls can take a compensating animal down a few notches.

• As most of us in North Idaho might already know, outdoor-only animals need complete shelter from the wind and cold. A heated barn or mud room should be considered when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, especially for an old companion.

• Limit the length of your pet’s walk in cold temperatures. When it drops below freezing, your pet should spend no more than 10 to 15 minutes outdoors.

As most of us in North Idaho might already know, outdooronly animals need complete shelter from the wind and cold.

• Animals suffer from hypothermia when their body temperature goes below 100.5 degrees F. Low temperatures, lethargy and anorexia all indicate a need for urgent veterinary attention. If not addressed immediately, it can contribute to shock and organ failure and eventually death. In a hypothermia crisis, move the pet to a warm environment, bundle in warm blankets that have been warmed in the clothes dryer, and add hot water bottles in the blankets. Seek veterinary attention. our community, and to play our part in helping people with their dental and overall health, their smiles and ultimately their happiness and prosperity, is a great honor and responsibility we take seriously.” The local business community is a closely knit group who shares in innovation and creativity to offer truly superb services and products to better the lives of those who live there.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR a premier dental facility in the region, look no further. Avondale Dental has been providing state-ofthe-art dentistry and its uniquely legendary service for more than 40 years. The boutique dental office has been serving the Inland Northwest for more than four decades and has grown to be one of the largest and most sophisticated operations in the region. “We offer all dental services from Invisalign, implants, cosmetic dentistry, full-mouth reconstruction and general family dentistry,” says owner Dr. Kory J. Wilson, DDS, who joined the Avondale team 10 years ago. In 2012, Avondale Dental welcomed the addition of Dr. Katherine Quinn Martin. Housed in one of the oldest buildings in Hayden Lake—which Dr. Jim Robson originally purchased from his great aunt and was known as Aunt Erma’s General Store— Avondale Dental offers its patients a unique and beautiful setting right here in North Idaho. Nestled among the trees alongside the 10th green at Avondale Golf Course, the one-of-akind serene setting is unparalleled. At Avondale Dental, they offer some of the most talented providers in the entire region, who are part of the foremost continuing education continuums in all of the country and have a network of mentors in all disciplines of dentistry. This allows them to provide you with the most advanced services under one roof. Dr. Martin is part of the Spear Study Club which is an internationally recognized advanced dentistry teaching center. Dr. Wilson’s Invisalign mentor from Manhattan, New York, does more Invisalign than anyone in the country. And due to the size at Avondale Dental, they can regularly collaborate to

continue to offer patients the best care and service available. According to Dr. Wilson, “Healthcare is rapidly changing, and while most dental offices are slow to react, we are forward thinking and adaptive. We are always looking for ways to be better, more advanced and stay ahead of our peers to truly offer a unique and special experience each and every time to our patients.” Their patients care about their dental health and put trust in the staff and doctors at Avondale Dental to help guide them to the best decisions for their oral health. The doctors only recommend and perform procedures to keep healthy, functional and beautiful smiles.

Dr. Wilson and his team attribute their success at Avondale Dental to the hardworking and dedicated staff. Avondale Dental’s longtime team truly cares about the people it serves, as well as the overall success of the business. “Because of our tenured success,” says Dr. Wilson, “we continue to attract the very best talent to support our mission. And we wouldn’t be able to be as successful as we are without the best family of patients anywhere.”

“We strive to treat you differently than you are used to at the other healthcare offices, and our providers are among the most highly skilled in all phases of dentistry,” says Dr. Wilson. Dr. Robson is from Kellogg, Idaho, and has been a practicing dentist in the Hayden community for more than 40 years, while Dr. Wilson and Dr. Martin are from Coeur d’Alene, where they both attended Lake City High School. “It was a priority for both of us to return to and serve our hometown community,” says Dr. Wilson. “Our deep roots are why we are so committed to the growth and prosperity of the Coeur d’Alene area, being heavily involved in many community programs like Boys and Girls Club, EXCEL Foundation, Leadership Coeur d’Alene, Coeur Group, and Idaho State Dental Association Leadership positions, among others. “We love community! Young, in Love and in Business Teen entrepreneurs, keeping the entrepreneurial spirit alive and well in Hayden By Jani Gonzalez

FOR TRAVIS “JUNIOR” POTTER, there was never a doubt that he was going to be an entrepreneur. He and his fiancée, Johanna Arts, are just 20 and 17 years of age. Both own Junior’s Barbecue in the Prairie Shopping Center, and they are nothing less than spirited and talented about it. “I always knew I was going to do this,” Junior said one Saturday morning before opening the restaurant for lunch. Junior is the oldest of 11, and his family has owned several businesses in meat, dairy around the county and now organic soda in Hayden. You could say entrepreneurship is in the family. All in the family Junior’s father, Travis, Sr., owns Tractor Soda Company, and his sister, Cheyanne, owned the 1920s soda fountain which will be part of the Juniors Barbecue soon. Travis Sr. started Tractor Soda Co. two years ago in the family kitchen, experimenting with flavors and having family and friends taste test. He creates his soda using all organic, fair trade and real ingredients. “Everything is made from real spices, herbs and fruits, and the coloring is all-natural,” Junior explained. The flavors range from traditional cola and root beer to lemongrass, coconut and ginger beer, among other original flavors. Junior grew up with parents selling meat and dairy in various familyowned businesses throughout his life. Born in Missouri, his affinity for barbecue began when his father, who was in the military at that time, was transferred to Georgia. It was there that his father learned to barbecue. “I’ve had barbecue in almost every state. To put the best together with what we have here in terms of food, atmosphere and service,” he said. Junior’s family moved to Minnesota after living in Georgia and later moved back to his parents’ home state of California. They often traveled the country to food shows; sometimes selling meat was as simple as setting up the smoker at a gas station. He was just 8 years old when he asked his father about barbecue sauce, and his father told him to

figure it out. Junior began experimenting and developed his own recipe as he grew up. “I went from hundreds of spices to just where I like it. We’re always adding new flavors too,” Junior said. He’ll be bottling some of those flavors too for sale at the restaurant along with some crafts made by his younger sisters. Junior and Johanna take their barbecue seriously. Each meat takes between 4 to 18 hours to smoke. They serve brisket, tri-tip, deep pit beef, pulled pork and chicken plus sandwiches, Barbacoa Tacos, salads and meat by the pound. Their sides are all family recipes made from scratch daily. “Sometimes we just sell out and some people just don’t understand why there isn’t more (already made),” Johanna said. Johanna, the youngest of four and homeschooled, finished high school early and had planned on following her mother’s footsteps in becoming a midwife. When she met Junior, almost two years ago now, her plans changed. Now she is the restaurant’s business administrator and also helps cook, clean and prep. They met when he was helping her father build fences on her family’s property. “He kept asking for water,” she said as she explained how they started talking. He later asked her to a

swing dance, and now the two are engaged to be married in June. She said Junior was upfront about his dream of owning a restaurant and soon they started looking at possible places. “We just threw it out there and started making spreadsheets to figure out what we wanted to do. I never thought I’d be part of a restaurant... but I like talking to people and cheering them up,” she said. “It’s awesome to be able to reach out to people, serve them and make them feel good.” Keeping it clean It’s always been important for the Potter family to “eat clean.” Their goal is to eat as healthy as possible and they do the same with the food they serve; their meats are certified organic. The practice began when Junior’s grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. “As she went through that, she wanted to eat clean. She lived longer than expected, and that really influenced us,” Junior said.

everything themselves, with some help from family, just three months before opening. At the same time, Junior and Johanna sheared sheep and saved their earnings from that to fix up the old pizza place that is now Junior’s. “We had the space for about three months. We would go to farms and shear sheep, just the two of us. Everything we made we put it into here,” Johanna explained. Their hard work has paid off, and they renovated the space on a shoestring budget. Johanna made the washtub lights and Junior made the truck bed tables. Much of their decor comes from re-purposed materials like barn wood and old truck parts. “We hope to make the restaurant a chain though we don’t know yet where this might take us,” she said. “It was definitely his dream when he started and now it’s both of ours.” To learn more about what’s happening at Juniors Barbecue, visit their Facebook page.

Mi l l en n o v a t i o n Generations sharing and learning from one another By Dr. Ryan Bones

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED how generations seem to have “personalities” like people do? Along with those personalities often come stereotypes. For example, the baby boomers were “free spirited.” Their kids, the Gen X-ers, are often considered cynical and negative. Then, of course you have those lazy, entitled millennials. We’ve all heard these. Stereotypes survive because people perpetuate them and believe them to be true. So, what if a generation wanted to change its image or redefine itself? I suppose before you can redefine anything, you’d need to clearly define it in the first place. Let’s start with the word “millennial”—who is a millennial? Well, Generation Y (as they are also sometimes called) typically includes anyone born between 1980 and 1995—those who came of age with the new millennium, so it can range anywhere from those currently 20 to 35 years old. At 27, this puts me smack dab in the center of the generation. We’re normally looked at as the stupid, shallow, and selfie-obsessed “worst generation yet” who can’t put down our phones long enough to have a real conversation. In the workplace, we’re considered lazy, entitled job hoppers who expect a trophy just for showing up. However, you may be surprised to learn that while most of these preconceptions are inaccurate, they are actually

40 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 24 were enrolled in college, an American record. Believe it or not, we also read more. Eighty percent of those over 30 have finished a book in the last year, while 90 percent of the under-30 crowd has done the same. Millennials have also shown to be more tolerant and racially diverse than previous generations—a key quality in the ever-evolving national and global economies. While these are big stats, there is one thing about our generation that is changing the landscape of the business world more than any other—our fundamental desire to make a difference. Eightyfour percent of millennials surveyed agreed with the statement: “Knowing I am helping to make a positive difference in the world is more important to me than professional recognition.” We don’t care as much about climbing ladders. It was found that the most important thing young adults ages 21 to 31 wanted in a successful career was a sense of meaning, and three-fourths stated that their ability to excel in their job is contingent upon deriving meaning from their work. So what does “meaning” mean, exactly? The business magazine, Fast Company, found that meaningful work allows one to share their gifts, make an impact in the lives of others, and live their desired quality of life. Unfortunately, less than half of the millennials surveyed reported

boomers, and to great success. Gen-Y business owners are leading bigger teams, seeing higher profit margins, and having a bigger social impact than previous generations. In fact, 61 percent of millennial-owned businesses reported increased sales over the past six months versus only 41 percent of small business owners overall. Seeing this trend, Forbes Magazine has named us “The True Entrepreneur Generation.” As more and more millennials are innovating and creating meaningful work through their business, we are starting to see jobs so satisfying and congruent with lives that the two are almost indistinguishable from one another. You don’t have to “punch out” when you’re doing what you love. So what is it about our “entitled, tech-obsessed generation” that makes for successful business owners? Let’s take a closer look at some of those stereotypes. “Entitled.” A lot of millennials come off as full of themselves, but that can also be viewed as confidence and a strong belief in themselves and their abilities—crucial qualities to have in the entrepreneurial arena. “Obsessed with technology.” Okay, that one is true. Our generation was born and raised with

Each and every person within each generation has the capability to create a better life for themselves and those around them. By working together, we cannot only re-write our story, but also that of our generation. creating a disconnect among generations that is slowly changing the face of business as we know it. In 2015, millennials surpassed Generation X to become the largest share of the American workforce at 53.5 million strong. By 2018, we’re on track to eclipse boomers in spending power at $3.4 trillion, and by 2020 we’ll make up 40 percent of the electorate. Scary? Not if you consider that millennials are actually on pace to become the most educated generation in history. As of 2008,

feeling that they actually get this sense of “meaning”—indicating that the current systems in place by most organizations to motivate millennials are missing their mark. That’s why more and more of us are striking out on our own to create our purpose and meaning by starting innovative businesses. Fifty-four percent of millennials surveyed either want to start a business or already have. Even in our younger age, our generation has already created twice as many businesses as the

technology. We were there when dial-up, AOL and MSN Messenger were things. We drooled over the Razr and wanted a Blackberry so we could go online on our phones! That constant evolution of technology throughout our lives has resulted in our generation becoming very tech savvy and quick to adopt new technology. As a result, we’ve developed a firm grasp on these tools for things like building relationships, promoting our businesses, crowdsourcing solutions, and researching information on demand. Our generation also gets called “delusional”

“Obsessed with technology.” Okay, that one is true. Our generation was born and raised with technology. and “unrealistic.” I’d say, yeah that’s probably somewhat true, but not in a bad way. Delusional and unrealistic are the types of qualities that lead to innovation. Our fresh perspective has introduced new solutions to old problems. As Albert Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” One trap we need to avoid as a generation, however, is thinking that we have all the answers. While we may be great with an iPhone, we don’t have the knowledge and wisdom that only comes from running a successful business through economic ups and downs, personnel changes

and unexpected challenges. This is where the generations ahead of us will always have us beat—experience. The good news is that they are willing to share it. The best thing we can do for ourselves and our business is find and connect with those who have been there before—to mentor us, answer our questions and help us avoid the mistakes they made in business and in life. So millennials, don’t be afraid to reach out—and to those older, please don’t be afraid to help us!

No matter where you fall within the generations, if there is something you don’t like about our world, change it! So many people are quick to post a status, but often fail to take any real action. The world will be changed by our example—not by our opinion. Each and every person within each generation has the capability to create a better life for themselves and those around them. By working together, we cannot only re-write our story, but also that of our generation.

FREE TRAINING AT NIC’S SAFETY FEST FEB. 22-24

“WE WANT TO SHOW WHY BUSINESSES, INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS AND THE COMMUNITY SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT DEATHS THAT CAN BE PREVENTED BY SAFETY EDUCATION.”

BY KAYE THORNBRUGH

IT COULD COST NOTHING to save a life in the workplace. North Idaho College will offer free safety training at Safety Fest of the Great Northwest Feb. 22 through 24 at the Workforce Training Center in Post Falls. This three-day, free event is a chance for companies to receive free safety training for their employees from some of the area’s best safety instructors. There will also be a vendor show Feb. 22 and 23. The general public is welcome to attend. “It’s a great opportunity for smaller companies to get in and get the safety training they need,” said Greg Rodriguez, owner of Ginno Construction Company. “We’re really trying to encourage companies to take advantage of the training.” Safety Fest offers over 50 classes to choose from for workers in construction, general industry, mining, agriculture and logging. Classes offered include OSHA 10, CPR/First Aid, MSHA refresher, Hazwoper, work-zone flagging, respiratory protection, work-place violence, among others.

Participants can receive industry credentials from some classes, and every participant receives a certificate of completion for every class they take. “We want to show why businesses, industry professionals and the community should be concerned about deaths that can be prevented by safety education,” said Colleen Hoffman, NIC Customized Training coordinator. Workplace accidents can impact a company’s experience modification rate, or EMR, a number used by insurance companies to gauge both past cost of injuries and future chances of risk. The lower a company’s EMR, the lower their worker compensation insurance premiums will be. An EMR higher than 1.0 (the industry average) can be an indicator of an unsafe workplace, which leads to higher insurance costs and can make it harder for a company to bid on jobs. Additional safety training for employees can help keep a company’s EMR down. “Just having the knowledge of what to do will save

lives, and we’re offering that for free,” said Becky Colotti, a training specialist with Hecla Mining Lucky Friday. Colotti has been with Safety Fest from the beginning. “There’s a lot of gratification to do something like this for the community. If we can safe one life, we’re all for it.” There were 148 workplace fatalities in Idaho between 2010 and 2014, some of which may have been prevented by safety training. Because training will be offered for free at Safety Fest, Rodriguez says that companies have every reason to register their employees. “Safety is important, not only in our jobs, but in our everyday life,” Rodriguez said. “It’s important for us to be safe at work and to come home the same way we left….Too many deaths happen that affect not just the family, but the community, everyone who knew that individual.” To register for www.nic.edu/safetyfest.

Live Long and Squat By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor

WE ALL KNOW THAT SITTING is terrible for our bodies for reasons too numerous to list in this article. It damages our metabolic, nervous, mental, muscular and structural systems. Unfortunately, no matter how vigilant we are, there are times when sitting is inevitable. We sit while we drive, while we eat and relax, and for most people, we sit while we work. As a society, we need a paradigm shift that pretty much eliminates sitting in order to truly live the lives for which our bodies were designed. But I don’t see that happening any time soon, if ever, so what I am going to focus on is minimizing the damage that sitting causes.

First thing we need to do is obvious. Sit less. As much as it seems like a no-brainer, it takes constant effort to sit less. You can get a pedometer, movement tracker or app to set movement goals to help motivate you to keep your rear out of a chair. Don’t slouch when you do sit. Sitting in front of the computer or TV and slouching just compounds all of the damage done from sitting. And here’s a biggie—squat. While sitting is an unnatural position for your back, putting compressive forces on the lumbar spine, squatting is the opposite. When done properly, it extends our lumbar (lower) spine without compression while stabilizing with the legs, core, hips and glutes.

Many people believe that squatting is bad for their knees. Not so. Squatting poorly is bad for your knees.

Don’t start off squatting with as much weight as possible. And for the love of all that’s holy, don’t do it on a smith machine. Use your body and eventually free weights. Free weights meaning barbells, dumbbells or kettlebells. Make sure you can articulate the movement by keeping your knees towards the second and third toe, keeping your chest up and your spine in a neutral position. If you haven’t squatted in years, then seek a qualified professional or do some research on how to progress your squat from wherever you may be starting. Strength is a skill and must be honed in order to keep and develop it. Many people believe that squatting is bad for their knees. Not so. Squatting poorly is bad for your knees. If it hurts when you squat, stop. You are most likely doing it wrong. If you don’t have anyone to help you learn to develop your squat, take a video of yourself squatting and watch the video after each set. If it hurts your eyes to watch it, the movement you are doing is most likely not a correct squat. Start by putting a chair or bench directly behind you and sitting down and then stand back up. Sit down without rocking back onto the seat and stand straight up without rocking forward. Be mindful of your spine not rounding at any part of the movement. I bet that doesn’t hurt your knees.

between the ages of 51 to 80 were studied for an average of 6.3 years, and those who needed to use assistance from both hands and knees to get up and down were about seven times more likely to die within six years than those who could quickly stand up and get down without support. So what does that mean for you? Can you get up and down off the floor quickly and without assistance from your arms or rolling onto your knees? If so, good, but make sure you are able to do it long term and continue to move and move often. If not, you have some work to do. Start moving ASAP. Our bodies were designed to stay active. LOCAL DAY TRIPS TAKING FITNESS OUTSIDE BY NATALIE DREGER JUST DO IT

Open Monday - Saturday 11:00am - 8:00pm

I AM A HUGE FAN of being outside and burning calories at the same time. We live in such a gorgeous community, we can all take our fitness routines outside of the typical gym environment and still experience the same great benefits—if not greater results. Some people have referred to our community as God’s country, simply because we have everything that we could ever need or want right here. We have amazing freshwater lakes, rivers, mountains and fields just out our back door. Don’t you just love that? I do. I often consult with clients who have never had, and have no desire to ever have, a typical gym membership. I will tell you the same thing I tell them; you don’t require a gym membership to improve your health or to experience an amazing physique transformation. It really wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t even have a gym to go to. People got plenty of exercise throughout the day outside doing things they enjoy doing with their friends, their children, their spouse or their dog. There are so many different places to see and experience in our area, some of which are only a short drive away. We so rarely venture out of our comfort zone that a day trip to a neighboring city might be something to consider. I want to give you an idea of one you can take advantage of, and it’s just a short drive. Dover Bay is an incredible property situated on the beautiful Pend Oreille River and only three miles from downtown Sandpoint. Dover Bay has over nine miles of walking and biking trails that the entire family can enjoy. Think about the calories you could burn simply taking your kids for a leisurely bike ride? There is an incredible and safe paved bike trail from Sandpoint directly to Dover Bay, a beautiful ride in the summer or fall.

If you are a bird watcher, you’ll want to meander over the wooden foot bridge and take in the sights of many different species. The peace and serenity that you will find kayaking along the river’s edge, or simply sitting on the beach, is unparalleled to anything else. The peace and quiet in an already hectic world will be a welcome escape to your busy schedule. We all know how damaging stress can be on our body, why not pencil yourself in your own schedule for a little “time-out?” Go to Dover Bay and just take a little walk and breathe in the fresh air? Leave your cell phone in your car and enjoy the best stress reliever you can find. Nature. We often get in this toxic rut of work, work, work and we forget the importance of getting outside and moving our body. If we are too busy going to work and coming directly home to sit in front of the television, we lose the healthy benefits of a great work-life balance. Give yourself permission to step outside of your comfort zone a bit and do something different.

Take home some of our Market FRESH FISH for dinner tonight!

We offer a variety of DAILY SPECIALS, fishwiches, fish and chips, salads, snacks and sushi. www.fishermansmarketcda.com

Trust me, you will love it and just might find yourself going back for more. I did.

IT’S NOT ALL IN YOUR HEAD GOOD BACTERIA CAN LEAD TO OVERALL BETTER HEALTH

WOULD IT SURPRISE YOU to learn that many brain and emotional issues are often the result of an imbalance in the microbiome (good vs.bad bacteria) balance in your gut? Ninety to 95 percent of the “feel good” neurotransmitter Serotonin is produced in the small intestine. Balancing your gut flora is often key to balancing your moods. You may have an issue with your gut and not even know it! Some signs which may indicate an imbalance of gut bacteria include: • moodiness

• anxiety • depression • memory problems • worry/fear • OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) • brain fog • ruminating thoughts • ADD, ADHD and other focus issues When the microbiome in your gut is compromised, it triggers inflammation and sends faulty signals to the brain via the nervous system. This intricate communication system is called the “gut-brain connection.” Symptoms appear in the brain, yet the answer is often in the body. This gut-brain connection has always been recognized by holistic health care professionals treating behavioral health issues, but it has only recently become acknowledged in the

mainstream mental health world. The U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has funded seven studies to investigate the microbiome-gut-brain connection and the U.S. Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Virginia plans to spend $14.5 million over the next five to six years examining the gut’s role in cognitive function and stress responses. This is exciting news as it validates natural alternatives for treating illnesses previously only treated with pharmaceuticals. With all the known side effects from psychotropic medications, many clients opt out of taking anything and continue to suffer needlessly. Homeopathic and herbal remedies are significantly less expensive than conventional drugs with no known side effects even when combined with pharmaceutical drugs. Homeopathic medicine, in over 200 years of use and research, has been found in countless cases to assist the body’s natural healing process for all types of illness, validating its provings and efficacy. There’s no reason to suffer when the solution is often very simple. Keeping your microbiome balanced is to your overall health! Prevention is the best medicine so let’s discuss what can disturb this delicate balance to begin with. Here are some of the ways you could be harming your gut flora without realizing it: • prolonged emotional or physical stress (produces excess cortisol from your adrenals)

By Colin Anderson An active lifestyle and healthy outlook on eating and exercise can help us feel and look better. The following pages outline a few key things that we can do moving into the new year to help jump start an active approach to life in 2017. Cheers to health!

Designing Your Workout Routine

CDALivingLocal.com

know your strength To Avoid Injury You were All Conference track in high school, and 20 years later you’ve decided to pick up right where you left off—bad idea. When starting an exercise plan, it’s extremely important to know your abilities and limitations. As we age, our flexibility naturally weakens and our muscle recovery time takes longer. Be sure to stretch before and after workouts to avoid slipping a disk in your back or spraining and straining knees, ankles and shoulders. Most gyms have on-site trainers that will take you through a series of tests then set up a program tailored to your goals.

How To: Build your stamina If it’s been six months since you ran six miles; don’t hop on the treadmill and plan on doing the full six. When building up endurance and stamina, the initial goal is time, not distance. You might be able to run an eightminute mile, but if you’re maxed out after eight minutes you won’t do yourself as much good in the long-term as if you slowed to a 10-minute pace and ran for 30 minutes. It’s good to vary the machines you use as well. Stairs, treadmill, elliptical and bike will challenge your muscles and endurance better than the same motion each day.

f o u n d atTraining ion Often overlooked by gym goers, getting your core in shape is arguably the most important exercise. Having a strong core gives you the balance and strength to move on to more complex lifts. If the core is weak, your body will compensate on heavy lifts which can lead to injury. Finding 10 to 15 minutes each workout for various forms of sit ups and balancing techniques will lead you to a much stronger foundation and better workouts. It also works the areas where just about all of us are trying to shed a few pounds and inches.

Dedicated Space Inside Your Home

Almost as popular of a New Year’s resolution as getting in shape, decluttering the home is high on many priority lists. By getting rid of excess, you may just open up an entire room in which you can place workout equipment. A small bedroom or office can easily fit yoga mats, resistance bands, free weights, an exercise ball, stationary bike, bench or other larger piece of equipment. You can get a full-body workout with these few items alone. Having a dedicated workout space in your home saves you a trip to the gym as well as gym fees and allows you to work out any time of day.

CDALivingLocal.com

C i r cworkouts uit For those looking to ramp up their results, circuit training provides an intense full body workout combining both strength and endurance. Participants go through a series of movements with little to no rest in between. Music is typically blaring, and your instructor will be motivating you to push your body way past your comfort zone. These workouts are intense, but combined with proper diet they help shed pounds and gain lean muscle faster than just about any other program out there. There are various in-home programs available, and gyms typically offer hour-long classes as well. You’ll be hurting, but most see the effort pay big dividends.

Buddy workouts Accountability is one of the biggest challenges to achieving goals. If you only have to report to yourself, it’s easy to skip a workout or cheat on your diet. Get your spouse, teenager or a friend involved with your goal and hold each other accountable. Even if your goals are different, you will be surprised at how much wanting your exercise buddy to succeed will make you want to succeed. This is also great social time outside of work. Buddies can push each other past their original goals, and bringing in additional people or creating a team challenge will also help keep you working towards your goal.

COLOR CABINETS Whether it is a dresser, a bathroom vanity, kitchen cupboards or a kitchen island, cabinets are no longer a standard white or wood. People are bringing color into their homes through use of color in their cabinets and other furnishings. If you are one who enjoys DIY projects, chalk paint is a popular way to refinish dressers, cabinets, bookcases and more. Chalk paint gives the surface a chalky texture and is often used with a soft wax that seals the paint and produces a matte finish. If you are seeking a more distressed look, some recommend sanding the painted surface and exposing the wood underneath. There are countless options to bring a pop of color to your home interior.

Spruce it up With Succulents Whether you have a green thumb or not, succulents are the perfect plant to bring some of the outside indoors. Because they require little maintenance and are resilient, they make the perfect accent to your dĂŠcor. One popular trend when it comes to succulents is tabletop terrariums. You can simply use a large mason jar and place some porous pebbles on the bottom followed by a thin layer of moss, potting charcoal and soil and another layer of stones, securing the succulent among the stones. For some variety, try adding seashells to your display or even some cactus plants.

The Color of Cop per It is a popular trend in light fixtures, backsplashes, countertops and accent pieces; the color of copper adds class and warmth to any room in your home. And the good news is that adding some copper to your home dĂŠcor does not have to be expensive. You can simply take gold spray paint and add some bling to something you find at the thrift store. Kitchens are a popular place where copper lighting and accents are being seen more and more. From copper countertops, kitchen tables, sinks and light fixtures to canisters and cookware, there are countless ways to add class to your home!

Mosaic Tile Backsp lash While a tile backsplash has a functional purpose to protect the walls in your kitchen or bath, more and more people are using them to create beautiful pieces of art. If you are looking to provide your kitchen or bathroom with a little flare, using mosaic tile for your backsplash is a popular trend. While providing a classy look, it allows you to maximize your creativity given the vast amount of colors and patterns available. Whether your home is traditional or contemporary, mosaic tiles will add class and elegance to your space.

A WINTER WONDERLAND GET AWAY TO WHITEFISH, MONTANA BY JESSE WURM

TRAVEL & LEISURE

THERE’S JUST SOMETHING about Whitefish, Montana. Whether it’s the cowboy western feel with the saloon fronts on the buildings downtown, the breathtaking views of the mountains, or the effortless immersion with the surrounding wild, this place leaves an imprint on your brain. What better time to visit this beautiful area than in winter, when there are bountiful opportunities to get outside, play and enjoy the local sights. Frequently dubbed as “the little town with a skiing problem,” Whitefish is your one-stop destination for the perfect snow filled family vacation, a fun weekend of skiing with friends, or a romantic weekend for two. Pack your warmest layers, a pair of snow boots and have fun discovering one of the coolest little towns in the West. Here are a few of my favorite Whitefish winter activities, as well as some of the best places to go for brunch, après ski and a wild good time.

Winter Activities Big Mountain at Whitefish Mountain Resort, an endless play land for skiing, boarding, skinning and cross-country skiing. With over 2,500 vertical feet of alpine terrains and 11 chair lifts, plus Nordic and uphill trails, there’s something for every outdoor enthusiast here. There’s already an abundance of snow on the mountain, over 13 feet by the first of this year, the most snow to fall in early season in over 18 years. If you like skiing steep runs with deep powder stashes or enjoy scenic views of the Flathead Valley and Glacier National Park, the mountain is for you. Stop at the Summit House or Hellroaring Saloon for lunch and be sure to get some snapshots of the frequent snow ghosts at the top of the hill and the statue of Jesus off of the top of chair two. The Glacier Nordic Center at the Whitefish Lake Golf Course is the perfect place to head for some sunny or moonlit cross-country skiing. They groom each morning

for both skate and classic and have over 12K of groomed trails open during the day, and 4K is lit at night from dusk until 10pm, perfect for a full moon trail adventure. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, venture out to the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, Montana. Located just outside Glacier National Park, the Inn provides over 30K of groomed skated and classic trails. They also have rooms available to lodge in, whether you rent a family cabin, a room in the old log lodge, or sleep in one of the converted luxury rail cars and cabooses. The Izaak Walton Dining Car is a favorite of the locals and guests alike, and at the end of the day you’ll find most of the guests in the bar sipping their hot toddies while playing cards or cribbage. While you’re in the area, take the quick drive into Glacier National Park and head to Apgar Village to take in the view of Lake McDonald framed with some of the most breathtaking mountains in the area. The road is closed beyond the Lake McDonald Lodge, but there’s still plenty to see and take photos of.

Places to Stay Whitefish’s newest lodging destination, The Firebrand Hotel, is located in the heart of downtown, just a block from Main Street and across from the local middle school. Its sophisticated urban decor invites you to sit and relax by the fire with a coffee or cocktail. With a restaurant, café and spa on site, you’ll never have to leave the interior if you don’t want to. The Firebrand’s sister hotel, The Whitefish Lake Lodge, has been a favorite for years. Located on the shores of Whitefish Lake, the hotel offers a restaurant, bar, spa, shops and infinite views of the surrounding beauty. If you’re looking for the traditional ski in, ski out experience look no further than the Whitefish Mountain Resort. There are a variety of rooms, condos and homes for rent and they’re always throwing in lift tickets as a deal. Check out their website for reservations: www. skiwhitefish.com. THERE’S ALREADY AN ABUNDANCE OF SNOW ON THE MOUNTAIN, OVER 13 FEET BY THE FIRST OF THIS YEAR, THE MOST SNOW TO FALL IN EARLY SEASON IN OVER 18 YEARS. this February and you won’t be disappointed. Started by a group of locals in the 1950s, the carnival will take place during February 3 through 5 this year, with events scattered throughout the month of January leading up to it. It’s a great way to shake off cabin fever and combat the blues of winter. The founding legend goes that the Nordic god, Ullr, found his home on Big Mountain, along with his Prime Minister and Queen. Their quiet mountain retreat was soon disturbed by the local Yetis’ attempt to kidnap the Queen, so Ullr and his followers fought off the intruders. When humans arrived to the valley, Ullr became their King, and every winter he descends from his mountain lair to have a party with the people, and during the celebration the Yetis continue to maintain their futile efforts to capture the Queen. In short, be prepared for plenty of parties and grown men and women frolicking downtown in costumes. Be sure to keep an eye out for those pesky Yetis, too. Places to Eat The Tupelo Grill, located on Central Ave. downtown, is a New Orleans fair eatery that

provides good vibes, great sights and delicious southern comfort food and has a beautiful newly remodeled bar area great for before or after dinner cocktails. Stillwater Fish House, a favorite around these parts and located off the highway on the way to Canada, has the best seafood selection in town as well as a full oyster bar. Showcasing local and organic foods with wine and beer by the glass, this is the place for foodies to go. Montana Coffee Traders is the unofficial City Hall where all walks of life gather to congregate over coffee and community; the town meeting space for local booming businesses and the self employed alike. Grab a fresh baked goodie and a cup of joe and join in on the community communion. Nightlife The Great Northern Bar, cornered on the middle of Central and 1st Street, is the local nightlife establishment that you’ll just have to see for yourself. Decorated with the business signs of local establishments long gone and serving a variety of tall cans and cheap mixed

drinks, you can find a roaring band entertaining locals and out-of-towners alike. And, whether you know the band or not, I guarantee you’ll find yourself on the dance floor at some point in the night. My favorite après ski cocktail has to be at the Spotted Bear Spirits, a newer craft distillery making gin and vodka and other tasty treats like house infused vodkas, limoncello and coffee liqueur. They are open daily from noon to 8pm and offer tasty hand-mixed creative libations, bottle sales, and Montana-made gifts. Be sure to stop by. Speaking of local crafts, don’t miss out on the local favorite the Great Northern Brewing Company. Also located downtown on Central Ave., the brewery serves up locally made craft beer, wine and light bites. Open 11am to 11pm daily, this is the perfect spot for gathering with family and friends after skiing on Big Mountain all day.

Bartenders’ Ball Benefiting area pets By Colin Anderson

With so many great bars and restaurants in Coeur d’Alene, Hayden and Post Falls, it can be difficult choosing the right spot for dinner or drinks. Lucky for you, there’s an event coming up that puts some of the best chefs and mixologists in the area all under one roof. The 5th annual Bartenders’ Ball will take place inside of the Resort Plaza Shops. The event is slated for Saturday, March 4 and will include small bites from local chefs and caterers as well as a wide range of craft cocktails and other beverages. These foodies take their craft seriously and will be featuring items not featured on their standard dinner menus. Proceeds from the event go to Help Every Little Paw (HELP), a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping all animals in our communities. “HELP has been in the community since 2010 and helped thousands of pets with emergency medical assistance, spay and neuter programs, and emergency food to those in need,” said board member Holly Hansen. “Recently, Help Every Little Paw started on their 10-year goals, one of which was rescuing those abandoned (pets) and providing a re-homing program which includes vetting costs and spay and neuter.”
