One Nation Under God

STARTING AT

EACH YEAR AS THE FOURTH OF JULY rolls around, I reflect on how blessed I am to live in a country where I am free to express and exercise my religious beliefs and to have such an abundance of opportunities for me and my family. Lately, however, we are beginning to experience a vulnerability like never before. The 9/11 attacks were horrific. Yet, many believed things such as that only took place in the “bigger cities” such as New York City or Los Angeles. We felt safe in our own community.

Coeur d’Alene Tractor, Your Full Parts and Service Dealer

Coeur d’Alene Tractor Co. 1112 W. Appleway Coeur d’Alene, ID 208.765.2315 | cdatractor.com

But things are changing. One only turn on the news to see the things that are happening in small communities not too different than our own. So how can we do our part to keep one another safe? While no one is immune, we need to be aware and to not be afraid to speak up when something does not feel “right.” Whether it is a student at our child’s school who may show a tendency towards violence or we overhear someone talking about things that are alarming, coming forward and reporting things to the appropriate authorities can help deter and even prevent an act of violence from taking place. On this Fourth of July, let’s make a commitment to ourselves and to one another to do what we can to protect ourselves and our neighbors. After all, we are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

Practical Living

ESSENTIALS Article sponsored by Sears Appliance and Hardware of Ponderay

ADVICE FROM THE EXPERT FOUR TRIED AND TRUE TIPS FOR ANY KITCHEN REDESIGN (BPT) - TACKLING A home improvement project can be a really daunting task – whether it’s a simple redecoration or a full kitchen renovation. You may feel like you’re the only homeowner, ever, to have questions. Renowned designer and LG Studio Artistic Advisor, Nate Berkus, has answered design questions from homeowners for more than 20 years, and he’s found that the same ones keep cropping up. Berkus offers answers to four design questions that commonly confound homeowners: Where do I even begin? Berkus recommends starting with a vision of what kind of kitchen you want to create. “There is so much design inspiration out there – Instagram, Pinterest, design blogs, etc. Find out what you are drawn to and what catches your eye. Ask yourself, ‘how do we want to live in the space, and what’s important to us?’ The design needs to support that,” says Berkus.

WHERE TO BEGIN

A redesign doesn’t have to always mean a full renovation, or that you need to do it all at once. “Painting cabinets can be a weekend process, and change the appliances when you have the budget. You can do it piecemeal,” notes Berkus. How do I make the best use of my renovation dollars in the kitchen? The kitchen is the number one room that consumers are most likely to splurge on when renovating, according to a nationwide study from LG Studio. So is it really worth it? “Absolutely,” says Berkus. “It’s hands down the hardest working room in your home, and you need it to stand the test of time. A kitchen is also about bringing people together. We do a lot of living and create a lot of memories in our kitchens.” To make the most of your kitchen renovation dollars, Berkus recommends shopping local

CDALivingLocal.com

18

vintage shops or multi-dealer antique malls for one-of-a-kind items such as light fixtures and seating. Even shop your own home for things like trays, bowls and objects that could get new life displayed and used in your kitchen.

KITCHEN UPDATES MADE SIMPLE!

What’s the most important thing to invest in during a renovation? “If you don’t start with innovative, hardworking appliances, it doesn’t matter what backsplash you are using,” says Berkus. “A kitchen needs to function, and great appliances are at the heart of that. They are 100 percent worth the investment.” Take for example the new 42-inch built-in sideby-side refrigerator from LG Studio, which Berkus helped design. “The stainless steel finish is so handsome and the inside of the refrigerator is huge. It’s perfect for big families and kids. Your appliances need to seamlessly marry design with functionality,” notes Berkus. Tastes change, so how can I be sure I won’t hate all this five years from now? “The biggest thing is not to get sidetracked by trends. I always say if something was considered beautiful 10 years ago, it probably will still be beautiful in 10 years,” says Berkus. When investing money, Berkus recommends always reaching for what is classic and what has stood the test of time – things like subway tile, Carrara marble, butcher block and paintedwood cabinets.

FINANCIAL FOCUS RESPONDING TO VOLATILE MARKETS

EXPECT MORE

THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, PETER FITZMYERS

IN RECENT MONTHS, stocks have fallen sharply from their record highs, with one-day drops that can rightfully be called “dizzying.” As an investor, what are you to make of this volatility?

Expect more of the same. Be prepared for more volatility, potentially including big drops one day followed by big gains the next. Until the factors considered responsible for the current volatility – that is, China’s slowing economy, low oil prices and the Federal Reserve’s decision on rates – have been fully absorbed into the market’s pricing mechanisms, big price swings, one way or another, are to be expected.

For one thing, you’ll find it useful to know the probable causes of the market gyrations. Most experts cite global fears about China’s economic slowdown, falling oil prices and anticipation of a move by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates as the key factors behind the stock market’s decline.

Don’t panic. The headlines may look grim, but today’s newspapers are tomorrow’s recycling pile. Volatility is nothing new, and the financial markets are more resilient than you may think.

On the other hand, the U.S. economy is still doing fairly well. Employers are adding jobs at a pretty good clip, wages are rising, home prices are up and overall economic growth has been reasonably solid. In other words, we are in a vastly better place than in the period before the Great Recession of 2008 and early 2009, when the financial markets bottomed out.

Look for opportunities. By definition, a downturn occurs when investors sell massive amounts of stocks, but it actually may be a good time to buy them, while their price is down. Look at the most successful businesses and their products and services. If you can envision these companies still being around and thriving in ten years, why wouldn’t you want to buy their stocks at potentially lower prices?

Nonetheless, it’s only natural that you might feel some trepidation over what’s been happening in the financial markets over the past few weeks. So, what should you do? Here are a few suggestions:

Diversify. During the downturn, just about everyone’s portfolio was affected. But if yours took a particularly large hit, it might be because

your holdings are over-concentrated in stocks, especially the types of stocks that fared the worst. You may need to further diversify your portfolio through a mixture of domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities, real estate, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other vehicles. Diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or prevent against all losses, but it can help blunt the harshest effects of volatility.

Review your investment strategy. Unless your goals have changed, there’s no reason to revise your long-term investment strategy, even in the face of wild fluctuations in the financial markets. Still, it’s always a good idea to review your strategy at least once a year, possibly in consultation with a financial professional. You may need to make smaller-scale adjustments in response to changes in the economy, interest rates, and so on, but don’t abandon your core principles, such as maintaining a portfolio that reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

Past performance does not guarantee future results. Investors should understand the risks involved of owning investments, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

WHAT’S BREWIN’ AT McEUEN? Annual Brewfest benefits North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation. By Colin Anderson

NOTHING GOES DOWN quite like a great local craft beer on a hot North Idaho summer day. And when you can quench your thirst and help out your community all at once, it’s even better. The annual Ales for the Trails brewfest is almost upon us. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 13 and be prepared to sample from dozens of local and regional brews while you enjoy food and live music.

To purchase tickets and find out more information on the event, visit www.alesforthetrail.org. Proceeds from Ales for the Trails go to support the North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation which maintains and continues to improve the 24-mile stretch of multi-use, non-motorized trail from the Idaho/ Washington State line to Higgins Point. Recent and upcoming projects include fresh paint on the bridge crossing over the Spokane River, and applying fresh sealcoat to cracks to keep the trail a smooth ride. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the annual Coeur d’ Fondo bike ride on September 24. There are five levels of ride from family fun to all day grueling. Whether by bike or foot, enjoy your trail and help the NICTF keep it a true treasure for our communities.

Your $30 ticket gets you admission into the brewfest and six tokens good for a five-ounce sample. Additional sample tickets are just $2 and can be purchased the day of the event. Tickets are currently available online, and the first 400 to purchase their ticket also receive a commemorative tasting mug. Local favorites Trickster’s, Down Draft, Selkirk Abbey and Daft Badger will be joined by Northwest favorites Ninkasi, Deschutes, Bail Breaker and No-Li, just to name a few. Minors are allowed onsite, but anyone wishing to sample will need a valid ID, no exceptions. Those who ride their bike to the festival will also receive a special prize.

PLAYTIME ON THE LAKE Local company gives you the chance to fly BY COLIN ANDERSON WHEN YOU’RE OUT ENJOYING everything beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene has to offer this summer, consider not just playing in the water, but above it as well. Northwest Extreme Sports offers the chance to strap into a hydroboard and experience one of the hottest new trends in water sports.

full line of products for sale of various types and styles hydroboards as well as parts and accessories for all your hydroboard sports needs,” said Vetter. In just their second summer of operation, the company has already found several community partners to join them, and it’s these partners that helped them get their business off the ground.

Despite only being around for a couple of summers, the popularity continues to soar like the riders of this fun extreme sport. Riders strap into a fixed hydroboard and are propelled out of the water and up to 40 feet into the air using water pressure sent from a personal watercraft through a tube attached to the hydroboard. The more than 1,200 gallons of water per minute gives riders both small and large enough pressure to move and float around high in the sky.

“We have intentionally associated ourselves with local small businesses and teamed up with the local INT League, which is an amateur watersports organization that holds local events at various lakes in the area for competition in wakeboarding, wake surfing, kneeboarding, wakeskating, waterskiing and slalom water skiing. We believe in small businesses helping other small businesses,” said Vetter.

When Northwest Extreme Sports owners John Jeffrey and Julie Vetter saw an opportunity to introduce hydroboarding to the Coeur d’ Alene area, they jumped at the chance. They’re now set up to do everything from individual lessons to fun family or corporate events.

While running Northwest Extreme Sports, Vetter and Jeffrey also work full time jobs of their own – Vetter as a paralegal, and Jeffrey as a railroad industry manager and active Air National Guard member for 20 years. It’s with great dedication to this emerging sport and sharing their passion with their customers that keeps the job fun. Northwest Extreme Sports donates hydroboarding flights to local charity auctions and also offers discounted flights to military and civil service employees.

“We try to customize the experience and tailor it to each and every customer, regardless of the size of your event,” said Vetter. While it might look like you need to be an extreme athlete to get into this sport, beginners often find it much easier than anticipated, getting the hang of it in about five to twenty minutes. Northwest Extreme Sports carries the latest models from JetBlade by Xjets and Flyboard by Zapata Racing and is committed to everyone having a safe and enjoyable time in the sky. Jeffrey and Vetter are certified by both companies, have CPR and boat safety certifications, and are licensed and bonded. If you get hooked after your first time in the air, Northwest Extreme Sports can help you get all the equipment that’s right for you.

For much more on hydroboarding you can visit www.nwextremesports. com or check them out on Facebook, Twitter and Trip Advisor. From tubing and skiing, paddling and fishing, there are boundless opportunities our lake provides but few will get your heart racing like soaring high in the air on a hydroboard. Make this the summer you give it a try!

THE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES OF HOPE KALEIDOSCOPE COMMUNITY SERVICES OPENS ITS DOORS TO ALL GROUPS HELPING THE HOMELESS Article By Jani Gonzalez JUST LIKE ITS NAME INFERS, Kaleidoscope Community Services (KCS) better known as “2nd Street Commons,” hosts a variety of groups, each offering their own dose of assistance to relieve homelessness in the Coeur d’Alene community. Second Street Commons is a hub for various faithbased groups to meet with each other or clients experiencing homelessness. For KCS executive director, Gar Mickelson, 2nd Street Commons is another way to serve the homeless and step closer to alleviating homelessness in our area. Mickelson, who is also the program coordinator for Heritage Health’s Homeless Outreach program, said the concept of a common house comes from other similar centers he toured in the Pacific Northwest. “I noticed that most churches have a global mission, but I was seeing a need for collaboration,” Mickelson said. He spent over 20 years in ministry, including four years as the associate superintendent of local outreach and pastoral care for the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends Church of the Quaker denomination, 11 years as a youth pastor, and four years as a community outreach pastor. After touring common houses in

Seattle, Salem, Portland and Boise, he changed his focus from a one church, one mission single-handed approach to that of collaboration. “They were not just doing a thrift store or food bank. They were bringing multiple community groups together to help those with meager means to rebuild,” he said. “When I came back, I felt like I wanted to be a catalyst to start a common outreach for all churches to be a part of.” Mickelson started KCS in August 2013 and opened 2nd Street Commons in December of that year with the goal of having a “base camp” where different church or volunteer groups in the community could meet and offer services to the area’s homeless or impoverished. The name comes from a conversation where Mickelson and board members were discussing the collaborative nature of the center. “I said, ‘It’s sort of a kaleidoscope with any endless number of possibilities.’ It wasn’t going to be one group but a wide variety of groups coming together. One of our board members said, ‘that’s it.’”

I felt like I wanted to be a catalyst to start a common outreach for all churches to be a part of.

Starting in January of 2014, KCS started serving a meal daily in addition to hosting meetings for a variety of faith-based groups.

serve the homeless but to show communities within Kootenai County how a place like 2nd Street Commons can work and promote a positive change among an often invisible population.

“These are groups that could not afford to meet anywhere else. (It’s also) to create a free space (where individuals can) eat, meet with resource people, use the computer, get out of the weather and be in a comfortable, positive environment,” he said.

“The location of the 2nd Street Commons is crucial to offer services because of the proximity to the DMV and the courthouse,” he said. “We just want to bring a voice to the voiceless,” he said. “We allow people to be loved where they’re at and don’t want to press faith-based issues. Most homeless won’t be as open in a church environment.”

The free meals and snacks turned into regularly served lunches for up 60 people five days a week. Fifteen months into the goodwill venture, however, the City of Coeur d’Alene required them to pay additional sewer cap fees, obtain a food handling license and have commercial kitchen equipment installed. The costs forced them to refocus their efforts solely on having a meeting place and are fundraising up to $50,000 dollars for the equipment.

The center also offers a place to relax from the trials of being homeless. “It’s hard to be stable when you’re homeless. They need to be connected and in relationship with healthy people — this brings stabilization. Solving the problem of homelessness is not solved with housing but by rebuilding people,” he said.

“We let about 10 church groups meet here – with about 100 to 150 people coming through the space each week,” he said.

Rebuilding individuals means teaching them to be responsible for their own actions. The idea is to bridge the gap between them and the mainstream population.

Every service offered at 2nd Street Commons is provided by a faith-based group, the largest being “2nd Chance Discipleship” which serves individuals between 5:30am to 8am Monday through Saturday. It is a collaboration of five churches with over two dozen volunteers.

“Part of the restoration process is giving them dignity and a voice, and they have responsibilities here. We have an expectation for their behavior here at the 2nd Street Commons and we give them responsibilities. If they want to change public opinion, it starts with their actions,” he said.

“(2nd Street Commons is) also a place for volunteers to help and learn about the brokenness of the community and become quality volunteers,” he said.

Kaleidoscope Community Services is located at 405 N 2nd Street near the corner of 2nd and Indiana in Coeur d’Alene. For more information visit them on Facebook or at kaleidoscopecs.org.

In spite of the universal need to help individuals who have fallen on hard times, homeless services are often met with hesitation and aversion from communities. It is Mickelson’s mission to not only

IT’S AT THE TOP OF THE CLASS

BY TOM GREENE, COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING SPECIALIST, NIC

THE NORTH IDAHO College Medical Assistant program has published data from its first three years of operation with employer satisfaction rates and the number students passing the certification exam both reporting 100 percent. “The Medical Assistant program is relatively new at NIC, but it has consistently demonstrated that it is a top-quality program. Employers know that it is a program they can trust to appropriately train medical assistants,” said Cindy Pavel, NIC Medical Assistant program director. Retention rate, placement and graduate satisfaction all scored in the mid to high 90th percentile, according to the annual report that contains data from 2012 – 2014. The scorecard for the annual report can be found online at the NIC Medical Assistant program website, www. nic.edu, under the “Instructional Programs” tab. “We’re proud of the rigors of the program and very proud of the work our students were able

to accomplish, which is reflected in the report,” Pavel said. The Medical Assistant program prepares students to work as entry-level healthcare providers in settings such as physicians’ offices, health care clinics and hospitals. The role of the medical assistant is to assist the physician and other professionals in managing the care of clients. It is a career in high demand, with it expected to grow by 23 percent by 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The average growth rate for all occupations during the same time period is 7 percent. “The two main healthcare facilities in Coeur d’Alene as well as other area offices and clinics are in full-on hiring mode right now for medical assistants,” Pavel said. “I don’t see that slowing down any time soon.” NIC’s Medical Assistant Certificate program was awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in 2013. NIC students who have completed the Medical Assistant program are eligible to take the national certification exam. Students can earn an Intermediate Technical Certificate in as little as 11 months or can pursue a two-year degree. Online options (offered through a combination of online theory and on-campus labs) are offered at the NIC campus and through outreach centers in Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint and the Silver Valley. For information on NIC’s Medical Assistant program, call 208.769.3373 or visit www.nic. edu, click on “Instructional Programs” and then select “Medical Assistant” from the dropdown menu.

FIGHTING WILDFIRE FROM THE AIR Coeur d’Alene Wildland Fire Center-Airtanker Base By Mary Terra-Berns • Photos by H. ‘Bud’ McConnaughey

T

he Coeur d’Alene Wildland Fire Center played a major role in the efforts to control and suppress wildfires in our region last year. Located at the Coeur d’Alene Airport-Pappy Boyington Field, the Center consists of Interagency Dispatch, Aviation Operations and Airtanker Base. The Airtanker Base, which has been in operation since 1961, was so busy last year that a second, temporary fire retardant (retardant) distribution ramp had to be built to accommodate loading the various airtankers utilizing the base, including Canadian and Alaskan airtankers. Long time Idaho Panhandle National Forests

with exceptional accuracy just by touching a screen. And our updated aircraft have made a tremendous difference.” Firefighters have exceptional endurance and fitness; they must be able to carry 45 pounds three miles in 45 minutes and have the ability to maintain focus during emergency situations in adverse conditions for extended periods of time. They must complete a long list of training requirements and experience, which includes extensive practical application and knowledge about fire behavior, equipment, technology and safety. Transporting firefighting crews and equipment, as well as managing air tankers, is

a highly complex and choreographed effort by interagency aviation specialists. Several types of helicopters are used for wildfire suppression from the huge Boeing 234 Chinook, used for water drops and to ferry crews, to the smaller, faster ships like the Bell 407. Smaller ships are typically used for reconnaissance and mapping but can also be employed for initial attack and water drops. Last year a couple of mid-size ships, a Bell 212HP and an A-Star B3, were commonly seen in the sky around the Panhandle as they ferried helitack crews to fight fires. Helicopters are an essential tool for fighting wildfires, but the iconic aircraft are the airtankers and amphibious scoopers (planes that scoop water from lakes and rivers). In the early

ene In Focus employee, H. “Bud” McConnaughey, the Interagency Aviation Officer for the Forest and Airtanker Base, has seen a lot of changes over the years. Bud manages all aviation operations for the Colville National Forest, Bureau of Land Management Coeur d’Alene District and the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. He graciously took a break from his very busy schedule to talk with me about the Airtanker Base and reflect on his 42 years of service.

When I asked Bud about the biggest changes he’s seen in his 42 years he said, “Training, qualifications, fitness and technology. Today’s firefighters are very, very fit, and are more knowledgeable, more experienced, and highly qualified for their job. Technology has changed exponentially. Modern GPS, IPads with map apps and smartphones allow pilots and firefighters to pinpoint a smoke or fire

1900s, aerial firefighting consisted of dropping wax paper sacks or wooden barrels full of water from planes; these methods were ineffective. By the mid-1950s, however, a Boeing Stearman, a biplane built in the 1930s and 40s, was effectively dropping water on fires in California, and modified agricultural biplanes (crop dusters) were dropping water and retardant on fires. Retardant was an improvement from water. It wraps around and clings to fuels and doesn’t evaporate like water, thus inhibiting fuels from igniting. Initially retardant was a mixture of sodium calcium borate added to water, but was quickly abandoned because the borate sterilized soil and caused chemical burns to ground personnel. A lot has changed since then and the long-term retardants used today have greatly reduced the chemical risks to ground personnel, fish and wildlife, and the environment. Now retardant is made from phosphate salts with attapulagite clay or guar gum (thickeners) and iron oxide, which gives it the red color. Modern fire retardant is classified as a commercial fertilizer. On a single day last summer, 63 missions dropped 88,910 gallons of retardant on several fires. By the end of the season on October 24, the Airtanker Base had dispensed a total of 1,723,183 gallons of retardant — a new regional record. The previous seasonal record of 980,000 gallons was set in 1967, the year of the Sundance and Trapper Peak fires. Aerial firefighting advanced along with the

retardant improvements. Retired WWII military aircraft were refurbished and put to work as water and retardant bombers. The Lockheed Martin P2V, a Korean War submarine hunter, was one of several different aircraft reconfigured for firefighting. Although successful with dousing flames and slowing fires, these aging planes were wearing out, and after several crashes and loss of life a few years ago, the majority of the fleet was grounded. Officials with the U. S. Forest Service required a new fleet of “next-generation” air tankers to be jet powered, capable of flying at a speed of 300 knots while carrying at least 3,000 gallons of retardant. As Bud explained, “Most of these nextgeneration planes are refurbished passenger planes that were built to take off and land fully loaded. They are modern, faster and can carry much more retardant than the old bombers. New technology allows for multiple drops from one load with exceptional accuracy.” Water scooping planes also played a big part in the firefighting effort last summer. Initially developed in 1945 in Canada, water scooping planes are advantageous in areas with abundant lakes and rivers. Scoopers stationed here last year were the Air Tractor 802 (Fire Boss) and other single engine airtankers (SEATs). Fire Boss scoopers have an 800 gallon tank and are typically used as a rapid initial attack and to work in between the retardant drops. These planes and the skilled pilots, another critical component of any firefighting mission,

help firefighters on the ground get an upper hand early. I asked Bud if he gets to take a break in the winter. He smiles and points at a large, 3’x4’ whiteboard divided into several long lists of tasks. Bud spends a good portion of his winter with planning, budgeting, aircraft solicitation and contracting, facilities and equipment operation and maintenance, preparedness reviews, and testing new recruits. He also instructs classes with topics including, among other things, what is a fire traffic area, temporary flight restrictions, aircraft types and uses, and the composition and environmental considerations of fire retardant. Additionally, he and many of the other firefighters may be dispatched to other areas of the country or other countries when there is a need for skilled support. Last year in the Idaho Panhandle fires started early, the first on February 28, and ended late, the last one on November 3, and burned 54,843 acres of federal, state, tribal and private land. We had a fair snowpack in the mountains this past winter and some toad-choking rainy days this spring that pre-empted an early start to the fire season. However, we also had some record breaking hot days that brought back memories of the thick, choking smoke we endured for weeks last summer. Bud and the crew at the Airtanker Base and the Wildland Fire Center are ready for whatever Mother Nature brews up for them this year. We are lucky to have them in our neck of the woods.

SCULPTORS AND PAINTERS, abstract and traditional−you’ll find a little bit of everything at the 48th Annual Art on the Green festival running Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7. Nearly 200 artists will have booths this year and another 50,000 visitors are expected at this annual Coeur d’Alene summer mainstay. Held each year on the lawn of North Idaho College, adjacent to Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River, this is a great yearly opportunity to see what our local artists and creative types have been up to in their creative endeavors. Stroll among the booths and discover incredible photographs capturing scenic beauty from our area and beyond. There are craftsmen who use chainsaws as their tools or leather as their canvas, and sculptors who can take scrap metal and repurpose it into something you’d be proud to display on your front porch or in your garden. While the deadline to reserve a booth has passed, if you are interested in displaying some of your own work but can’t fill an entire booth there is still opportunity. The Clothesline Booth offers aspiring artists a shared place to display and sell their works. Photographers and painters can utilize this space and submit up to 50 original twodimensional works priced between $10 and $75 dollars. The Clothesline Booth allows

CDALivingLocal.com

those that are just getting their artwork going an opportunity to show and sell a few pieces. The area is run by volunteers and those contributing to the Clothesline Booth are strongly encouraged to volunteer some of their time to the event. Speaking of volunteers, it takes a small army of about 500 to put on such a three-day event. Volunteers are organized through the Citizens Council for the Arts, a local non-profit that was formed to encourage, promote, and support the arts in our community. Proceeds from art sales at the event go to this organization which in turn uses the funds for educational classes, art donations to public buildings, North Idaho College, and local schools, and advancing awareness of the unique artists that make the Coeur d’Alene area home. There will be food and drink onsite for purchase as well as live music and events to keep the kids entertained. Parking can be difficult so there is a shuttle that transports you to the event from downtown Coeur d’Alene. Hours are noon to 7:30 Friday, 10am to 7:30pm Saturday, and 10am to 5pm Sunday. If you would like to volunteer at the event, you can contact the Citizens’ Council for the Arts at www.artonthegreencda.com.

The Best Exercise You’ve Never Done Learning the turkish get-up for optimal strength and mobility. By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor

IF YOU WERE ONLY ALLOWED to do one exercise for the rest of your life, what would it be? Before you say the first thing that comes to mind, think about what you need to accomplish in this exercise. We exercise or train to gain strength. To gain stability, mobility, endurance and metabolic conditioning. You want to hit all muscle groups and ranges of motion. I’m assuming you know what my answer is because it’s in the subtitle. The turkish get-up hits all of these qualifications and more to include open and closed chain stability and mobility, thoracic rotation and stability, linking the upper and lower body mechanics and more. But before I get too geeky on you, let’s define what this crazy exercise is. The

turkish get-up is a precise way to go from lying down to standing up with a weight over head being held with one arm. And then back down again. When done correctly it is poetry in motion, but when incorrect can exacerbate many skeletal and soft tissue issues. The key is, take it slowly and unloaded until you get the hang of it, and then challenge yourself once you have the steps down pat. It takes practice, but is well worth it if you attack the challenge methodically and with patience. Here’s how it goes: 1.

Start by lying on your back with your right arm with a neutral wrist

H E A LT H Y T I P

Drink Up! Take a break and have a glass of water! You should be drinking half your weight in ounces of water every day! Sixty-percent of your body is made up of water so it’s important to stay hydrated! CDALivingLocal.com

Your body should make a straight line with your left hand, left knee and left foot. You are now in the half-kneeling windmill position. You should be able to rock your hips towards your left foot, and your right hand holding the kettlebell should be directly over the right hand that is pressed against the floor. Both elbows are still locked out which is referred to as stacked.

5.

Sit up so that your left knee is on the ground stacked under your left hip, shoulder and kettlebell. At this point, your gaze shifts to the horizon so that your neck remains in neutral and you don’t put any unnecessary pressure on your lumbar spine.

6.

7.

8.

Now sweep your left foot so that it is directly behind the left knee and right foot and you are in the bottom of the lunge stance.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Stand up by scissoring up between your feet; pushing away from both the front and back foot and bring your back foot forward so that your feet are symmetrical under your body.

The Cure To... Everything!

(Steps 8-16) Reverse everything until you are back in the first position and then use both hands to safely bring the bell back to your body and roll your body and the kettlebell back to the floor.

This exercise is a labor of love. I have yet to come across someone who cannot at least perform a portion of this movement in a productive capacity. It can be frustrating to learn, but like I said, if you are patient and methodical the rewards are unparalleled. There are a ton of great resources on the interwebs and some incredible trainers in the Northwest who have studied this movement at length. Use every day as a practice of strength and see your strength, mobility and stability increase.

JUMP IN THE POOL FOR FASTER RECOVERY BY CHRISTINA HEFLEY, DPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY WATER PROVIDES the safest and fastest way to begin the recovery process for most orthopedic injuries, especially those involving the ankles, knees and back. How many times have you heard from friends and doctors, “Stay off of that sprained ankle until the swelling goes down.” Or, “Just elevate and ice it for a few days.” What you may not be aware of is that the scarring process begins within seven hours of an acute injury, which usually involves tearing of soft tissue

Hweight E A Lbearing T H Y on T the I Pinvolved joint. Because part is often painful or unstable, the athlete is advised to “stay off of it.” Water provides the ideal environment for accelerated healing. Gentle range of motion (ROM) should begin within hours of acute injury. If delayed more than 48 hours, scar tissue can quickly over produce, leading to tightening of the joint capsule and/or weakening of muscle fibers. Additionally, if the injured part is over stressed by load bearing, the healing tissue can re-tear, thus prolonging recovery and resulting in chronic pain and inflammation. The properties of water that accelerate the healing process include: Buoyancy - This is one of the key features of aquatic rehab. Buoyancy decreases the load on painful, inflamed joints. It allows for movement of the rest of the body so strength, endurance and speed are not lost during the recovery process. It also allows for more normal movement patterns such as running, while decreasing the gravitational pull.

fibers. The most common injuries involve muscles, tendons and ligaments. A “strain” is considered tearing of muscle fibers or tendons, a “sprain” is considered injury to a ligament. There are three basic categories of strain/ sprains. Type I: overstretching of the tissue, which results in small tears within the muscle belly, tendon or ligament. Type II: partial tearing, which can often be the most painful of the three and can take months and sometimes years to completely heal. Type III: a complete rupture or tear of a muscle, tendon or ligament, often a significant amount of swelling or deformation is present in the absence of severe pain. If not properly diagnosed and rehabilitated correctly, a simple Type I strain/sprain can lead to an early end to a sports season, chronic pain, chronic instability and premature arthritic changes in the involved

Hydrostatic pressure - Water pressure increases with depth, resulting in significantly improving blood flow and decreasing swelling. A body in water produces a different physiological response than it does on dry land. For instance, warm water will increase the cardiovascular demand and improve respiratory function. That means you can keep up your cardiovascular endurance, without over stressing the injured part during the recovery process. Fluid Dynamics - Water provides a unique environment for strengthening in all planes of motion with heightened proprioceptive feedback from surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments and joint surfaces. Increasing speed of movement in water directly increases the resistive push and pull without putting weight through the injured joint. There are many experienced physical therapists that can help you quickly recover from just about any sports injury. So jump in the water and get wet!

THE EDIBLE TRUTH TAKE CONTROL OF THE FOODS YOU EAT BY NATALIE DREGER

HH EE A A LLTTHHY YO PTTI IPO N S

I WAS RECENTLY ON THE ROAD traveling and am often amazed at the food choices available for good, healthy nutrition. Even in our beautiful community, there are a vast array of healthy options at hand. There are fresh fruits and vegetables along with high quality proteins available if you know where to look. This is the perfect time of year to visit the farmers’ markets. If you haven’t already, you owe it to yourself to go. You don’t need to settle for pre-packaged, high sodium, high fructose, high garbage anything. Unless, of course, that’s the look and feel you are looking to acquire. What one chooses to put in his or her body shows in many different ways. Our body is a true reflection of what we eat, what we do and who we are. You only get one body, but you have many different decisions with regards to how it will be treated. Fast food is only a FAST track to a big belly and a large undercarriage, and a whole host of other issues.

CDALivingLocal.com

44

Trust me, that is not a healthy option for you. Make healthy choices easier. If you don’t have time to pack your own lunch before you leave for work, why not run through your grocery store’s deli and purchase a few slices of protein, a bag of chopped vegetables, string cheese, a nice fresh green salad, bottle of water and poof you have just created a nice healthy lunch. Eating on the go or on the road doesn’t have to leave you feeling like a victim in another grease line. Many good things will happen when we take control of the foods that we eat. I am often taking my own salad dressing, nutritional yeast flakes and flaxseed oil into restaurants that I frequent. I have yet to be removed from their establishment. There are a lot of people who need to take medications with their meals. Well, my “medication” just happens to come in a different form and is not prescribed by a physician. Similar concept with different results. Right?

Yes!

I want to be flexible, out of pain and active!

Many good things will happen when we take control of the foods that we eat.

No one can make you eat anything. Just know that opening your mouth to a healthy option is just as easy and much more rewarding than opting for one that is unhealthy. Plus, look at the healthy example that we are showing our children and those around us. What if just a few of our own healthy choices rub off on someone else? Wouldn’t it be that much more rewarding?

Through our "Pain Free Living" program we make a donation to local charities as our way of giving back to the community.

I’ve been a Certified Fitness Professional for over 11 years, and I absolutely love transforming lives. We have no idea how many lives we can change by the simple decisions that we make on a daily basis. Perhaps this will touch one more life and inspire you towards your own health transformation. Yes, it’s worth it and yes, you deserve it. Natalie Dreger is a Certified Fitness Professional and Life Transformation Specialist. She can be reached at www.nataliedreger.com.

TheBoating Life W

ater is available in the Pacific and Inland Northwest in abundance. It’s a matter of minutes away, sometimes a matter of steps to the water’s edge. So with summer coming in hot, it’s time to brush up on some water sports – practice up and suit up to maximize the fun factor for summer. There’s water sports available for every skill level, from those who prefer to relax on a floatie at the beach to those who take it to the extreme – surfing, diving and flying above the water’s surface. Adrenaline junkies beware, the next few pages might spark a new love for the water.

Wakesurfing

Do you dream of giant tubes surfing the North Shore? Grab a taste of reality and adapt, because wakesurfing is here! Grab your boat, or your buddy’s boat, your surfboard, and a rash guard and get going! Once you’re out there, get your momentum trailing behind the boat holding onto a ski rope. When you’re feeling it, let go and ride that man-made wave out. Wakesurfers take it to the next level, creating new tricks and trying to do one better than the next guy. Fun fact: Canadian musician Chris Hau recorded a video in 2013 in which he played a song on a guitar while wakesurfing. Try to top that!

Hydroboarding

The wave of the future is here. Why ride in the water when you can ride over it? Create your own breeze on a hot summer day by strapping on some jet packs and coasting above the water’s surface. Helmets and floatation devices are a must if you’re renting your gear, but the hydrobaord itself is buoyant, so feel free to take a breather in the water if your legs can’t handle the pressure. Also, you’re connected to a watercraft via a large hose that forces water into the boots and down through the jets, giving the rider the ability to fly up to 49 feet in the air or dive up to eight feet underwater.

Paddleboarding

Who doesn’t want a casual day of fun on the water with friends? Paddleboarding is a great low-impact exercise when you propel yourself through the water using a paddle, standing or sitting on a paddleboard. Paddleboarding was originally performed in the open ocean, with the participant paddling unbroken swells to cross between islands. These days, and in our Northwest region, it’s all fun and games. Paddleboards can be surprisingly affordable to own, and most rentals are even more affordable for a day’s use, making it the perfect water intro sport for newcomers to the area. Bonus points: Paddling standing up puts tension on stabilizer muscles, building strength, stability and increasing your center of balance.

Air chair, also known as hydrofoiling, is basically sit down waterskiing. With the motto “Be safe, have fun, go BIG,” air chair is gaining a name for itself. Your balance skills have to be onpoint in this sport, as it takes some strength and balance to maneuver over the wakes your boat will throw back at you. Once you’re up, you’ll start to rise out of the water and onto the lower blades of the air chair, and you’ll be able to feel the wind rushing underneath you. If you don’t look down, it will feel like you’re miles above the water, minus the spray from the waves. We won’t talk about the spray.

Kayaking Growing increasingly popular, paddling a kayak around your favorite lake, pond, river, stream or ocean bay is a great way to see a body of water. Kayaks range in size from short dagger models capable of cruising through the deepest rapids to long length dual seat models so two can paddle in the same kayak. It’s a good idea to take a safety course to learn how to right yourself if you flip over. Don’t forget to stretch out the arms, shoulders and back before and after as a day paddling will reintroduce you to muscles you might have forgotten you had.

White Water Rafting River Bound

TRAVEL & LEISURE

Africa AN AMERICAN’S PERSPECTIVE

PHOTOS COURTESY DAN & SUSAN AZNOFF AND DAWIE JACOBS

BY DAN AZNOFF

THERE IS NO DOUBT that a trip through the vast expanses of Africa is the trip of a lifetime. With the exception of my wife, who returned for a second visit last May to share her excitement with me. The truth is, an African safari was never on my bucket list. But when I sensed the exhilaration and saw the photographs Susan brought back from her excursion with my son, the long plane flight and the rustic accommodations were no longer an insurmountable challenge. Our adventure was broken into four separate, equally thrilling segments. We started off at a private game lodge in South Africa, made our way to the inspirational grandeur of Victoria Falls that forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, then to the stark remoteness of raised tents in the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and finally across the continent to Tanzania where we traversed the Serengeti and spent a remarkable day in the Ngorongoro Crater. Elephant Plains The 21 hours of flying – including the last 40 minutes on a small single-engine prop aircraft

– all seemed like a small price to pay after our first day on our bush tour with Dawie Jacobs at the Elephant Plains Lodge in the Kruger portion of northeast South Africa. Our four-day stay at Elephant Plains included game drives in the early morning (wake-up at 5:30am) and an evening drive that returned after dark. On our first afternoon we were treated to an hour observing a pride of 13 lions and the sighting of a rare African pangolin, an animal that looked like a cross between an armadillo and an artichoke. Our first morning ride set the bar extremely high. Dawie spotted a leopard in search of her next meal. We watched as she crept through the tall brush….then bounced on a small duiker, a tiny member of the antelope family. The leopard made the dash and all we could hear was a faint yip. When we caught up to the leopard, she had her breakfast pinned with one paw. The end did not come quickly but, surprisingly, it was not bloody. The leopard began her meal while the duiker was still struggling to escape. Later that same day we watched as two lions

performed their mating ritual. The courtship took almost a half an hour. When the mating finally took place, it happened literally below the passenger door of our vehicle. The actual mating took only about three-and-one-half seconds. We were fascinated to learn that big cats often mate 50 times per day when they are in season. Within our first 48 hours in the brush, we had up close and personal experiences with each member of the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and the Cape buffalo). Dawie told us we were “incredible lucky.” But I think we were just lucky to have him at the wheel of our Land Cruiser. The next day we watched an emotional reunion between a leopard and her cub. But the highlight for my wife was on the third morning when we left two leopards mating to discover wild dogs feasting on an impala. Dawie was shrewd enough to place our vehicle on the shore of a watering hole where the dogs came to play after they finished devouring the impala. Dawie was not only a wonderful ranger, but an incredible photographer as you can see from

beyond the range of his fangs.

Deep in the Delta

From the rustic raised tents in the delta, we flew across the vast African continent to Tanzania. Our adventure in the Serengeti took us to three separate lodges, each with their own unique splendor. We were treated to breathtaking views of Lake Manyara and the white-linen opulence of the Kirawira tented camp. Our wake-up call in the morning at the luxury camp was a charming room steward wearing white gloves when he brought coffee and pastry to our veranda on a silver tray.

From South Africa we spent a day at Victoria Falls. Then traveled by car, ferry boat and tiny airplane to the Oddfellows Camp deep in the Okavango Delta. Instead of Land Cruisers, our twice-daily game drives were on dugout canoes known as a makoro. Our four nights in Botswana were highlighted by a close encounter with a raging hippo who rumbled through our camp about 12 yards from where we were having dinner. The tents were fun, but the real adventure came watching and listening for animals while using the outdoor toilet and bucket shower. From our makoro and hikes on adjacent islands, we came face to face with a 65-yearold bull elephant and several hippos who were not thrilled to see us intrude on their solitude. We saw herds of wildebeest in fields guarded by impala and zebra who roamed the perimeter. The most frightening incident of our stay took place one afternoon when Susan was confronted by a cobra. The snake raised its head, but thankfully slipped back into the brush as my wife calmly stepped backward and

It was on the six-hour drive across the Serengeti that we were privileged to witness a partial migration of wildebeest. The sight of the large animals rumbling in front of our vehicle for as far as the eye could see was truly inspirational. The Serengeti is also the only place in the world where you can see lions that climb trees. At one point, we watched a female sitting majestically on a branch while 12 lions from her pack hung from the limbs of a nearby tree. Garden of Eden Our final stop was at a lodge perched on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, close to where the first proof of humans were discovered. It’s

CDALivingLocal.com

58

easy to believe that this is where the Garden of Eden once might have existed. Inside the steep walls of the crater were several distinct ecosystems, ranging from a lake populated with pink flamingos to desert terrain where animals lived without any natural predators. There is so much more to reflect from our African adventure. But it is important to emphasize, like all vacations, the best part was the people we met. That began with Dawie and the staff at Elephant Plains, to our guide Rep who pushed our makoro through the shallow waters of the delta with his long pole, to Amos who drove us for six days in Tanzania and shared the traditions of his native people, the Maasai. Unfortunately, space limitations do not allow me the opportunity to mention the giraffes that pose for photos or the thousands of mischievous baboons who entertained us for hours at a time. An African safari is truly the vacation of a lifetime. If it’s not on your bucket list, it should be.

Painting and Wine A special fundraiser for dogs with special needs | By Jani Gonzalez The Double J Dog Ranch, a sanctuary for dogs with special needs, is hosting a painting party fundraiser at Embers by the Lake July 23. Since 2009, Cristene Justus and her husband have been caring for dogs who are deaf, blind or both. The dogs are often double merle Australian Shepherds (“Aussies”), who carry a genetic defect creating a merle or tricolored coat, often referred to as a “Double Merle.” Merle refers to the coat color.

HIGHLIGHTED EVENT

“Double merles are created when both parents have the merle gene. Each pup in the litter has a 25 percent chance of being blind, deaf or both. (It is) easily preventable with proper genetic testing by the breeders. Aussies, Border Collies, Great Danes – any dog that has the merle coat – carries that gene, which is 100 percent preventable. The Double Merle is the focus, but we take any dog with special needs,” Justus said. Currently, they are providing hospice care for two puppies with rare congenital disorders.

The Justus’ started the Double J Dog Ranch after fostering and adopting a blind and three-legged German Shepherd. “It started out of a need that we saw.” They care and train the dogs and make them ready for adoption. Last year, they adopted out 42 dogs. Currently, they house 12 dogs. “We train deaf dogs with hand signals, blind by voice, and use touch for those who are blind and deaf,” Justus explained. And sometimes, the dogs with special needs are better trained than those with all their senses. The nonprofit hosts several fundraisers annually to care for the dogs. This year’s painting and wine party, led by artist Christina Canning, is a first. It will be held at Embers, July 23 from 1 to 3pm. Tickets are $40 and are limited. “It will be outdoors by the lake, and we’ll be painting a landscape,” Justus said.
