PUBLISHER A Season of Hope
WHETHER WE TURN ON THE TV, open the newspaper or look on social media, we cannot escape the campaign ads that are inundating us during election time. Candidates debating over who can give us the brightest future. They all offer messages of hope. Hope in a better future. Hope in a better economy. Hope in an improved education system. Hope in providing more well-paying jobs. But we all know from experience many of these political promises go unfulfilled. But as we approach Easter, there are other messages of hope we know we can rely upon. After all, as the celebration when Jesus was resurrected, Easter is the symbol of ultimate hope in the Christian world. Coeur d’Alene Tractor, Your Full Parts and Service Dealer
Hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Some may argue that this can lead to discouragement if our expectations are not met. But stop and think about it. Where would we be without hope?
Coeur d’Alene Tractor Co. 1112 W. Appleway Coeur d’Alene, ID 208.765.2315 | cdatractor.com
During this Lenten season, how about making it a point to help others find hope. Take an hour or two a week and volunteer at a local organization that may need help. There are plenty of them right here in our own community. There are many elderly people who may have lost hope in the later years of their lives. Make it a point to visit with some of them. It will give them renewed hope. One thing that makes our community so unique is people’s willingness to help one another. So whether you lend a hand to an elderly person at the grocery store, volunteer for a few hours at a soup kitchen or just smile a little more at passersby, know that you are helping spread the Good News of the Easter season – hope! We at Coeur d’Alene Living Local wish all of you a blessed Easter season. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

GOOD NEWS
THE GIFT OF INDEPENDENCE
TESH CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF ASSISTING INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES
MORE THAN 40 YEARS AGO, individuals born with physical or mental disabilities were often sent to state institutions where they might spend most of their lives. But 1976 was at the heart of the Disability Rights Movement when state institutions closed, and the onus to integrate individuals with disabilities went to community organizations. Tesh in Coeur d’Alene began in the midst of that transition and has been an advocate for those with disabilities ever since. “In the 70s, the national laws changed and created the perfect opportunity to provide jobs and life skills training (for people with disabilities),” said Francis Huffman, CEO of Tesh. Instead of individuals living in a state institution, organizations, nonprofits and certified family homes emerged to care for them in the community. The state money that
would have funded the institutions now goes to these entities.
age they come to us and going through that with them,” she said.
Around that same time, children with disabilities were integrated into the school system. However, some were past school age and required job and life skills training. Tesh enriches the lives of individuals of all ages.
Tesh offers a variety of programs from child development to adult daycare services. Programs include an after school program and summer camp. For individuals who have reached an age where work is no longer a priority or are no longer able to work, the organization has an activity center similar to adult daycare, where they can socialize.
“We work with whoever walks through our door with a need – whether it’s a child or an adult,” Huffman explained. “We give them training to become more independent. We’ve walked ‘the journey’ with some of our clients from childhood through their geriatric years.” “Walking the journey” is how Huffman compared Tesh’s relationship with its clients. They will be there to help with whatever the person might need while under their tutelage. “We focus on entering that journey at whatever

“Those are people who would be alone at home but here they can come together,” Huffman said. “Many live in certified family homes, but if they live in a natural home, they likely have aging parents.” Much of Tesh revolves around job training and life skills education. They have employment specialists, job coaching, paid work trials and an employment transition program which
assists young adults prepare to work. They also have several onsite business activities that provide services for both government and private enterprises. Huffman explained that they have two levels of business training. “One is a vocational center/ workshop where they do piece meal work (such as inserting) three to five pieces in a bag or assembly of a product that gets sold,” she said. Tesh’s workshop also tailors the work time to what an individual may withstand and still earn a wage, whether that is one hour or more. “It’s for people who by choice or by need work in a workshop environment,” she said. The staff at Tesh aims to find “the right fit” for an individual based on their skills and interests. Tesh’s partner, Ability Works, is the organization’s employment arm. They also work with employers in educating how best to employ a person. For example, assigning them fewer hours or requiring them to do only part of the job.
She’s seen the attitudes change to individuals with disabilities since she began her career, but the needs remain. The special needs population has grown along with the general population, but there is also an increased awareness about autism and better tools for diagnosis. In addition, advances in medicine have allowed more people to survive certain medical conditions and injuries, she explained. “I see changes in the premature child that lives and in the person with a traumatic brain injury. Those numbers are higher,” she said. In regards to the increased number of individuals diagnosed with autism she said, “I think we are identifying more people with autism because we understand it better.” The Disability Rights Movement has been a success because more individuals with disabilities are in our schools and businesses. As a result, more businesses are hiring them, but there is still much room for them to expand their abilities to support themselves.
In addition to assembling and packaging, Tesh also has several onsite business services, including secure shredding and document destruction, mail processing and janitorial services. They provide services to several big name clients, such as Avista, STCU, HMH Engineering, the Coeur d’Alene School District, Idaho Transportation Department, Parks and Recreation and other state run offices. Huffman has been the CEO for nearly two years and has spent her career working for individuals with disabilities. She was working at a state institution while she finished her bachelor’s degree in speech pathology during the Disability Rights Movement years. She worked for 38 years as a special education teacher, speech therapist, special education district administrator and assistant principal. “I’ve always been committed to people with disabilities,” she said.
“There’s more we can do with employment that’s not $7.25 an hour. It’d be good to have a position that requires more training where they can start at entry level and move up,” Huffman said.
YOUR LIFE, YOUR CHOICES
Hospice of North Idaho believes in caring for the whole person. We tailor our care to help individuals live fully and focus on what’s most important to them.
WE’RE A DIFFERENT KIND OF HOSPICE
• Non-Profit - The only locally owned, non-profit in the area. • Experts in our Field Our staff has certification in hospice and palliative care. • Here to Stay - 34 years later, we’re still going strong.
Ideally for Tesh, there would be increased financial support from the community. Much of their income is from Medicaid and Medicare, but they don’t cover all operational costs. Although Tesh is grateful for private donations, they’d like to increase community awareness about what Tesh does and the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Hospice of North Idaho It’s never too soon to ask questions. Call us today!
2013 Annual Report
“Statistics show that one in five families are somehow affected by someone with a disability, but there are community members who don’t have that connection,” she said. “It would help if they had that understanding.” For more information about Tesh, visit teshinc.com.

Spring Cleaning Your Marriage RENEW YOUR RELATIONSHIP DURING THE SEASON OF HOPE
BY JOY PETERSON, M.A. LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST. AUTHOR OF “22 MYTHS OF DIVORCE” AND “DISCOVERING A DYNAMIC MARRIAGE” DISCOVERINGDYNAMICMARRIAGE.COM
MARCH PROMISES renewal and hope. So how about “spring cleaning” your marriage? During the courtship, lovers talk about dreams and visions of future careers and success, but few discuss moral, ethical, spiritual, financial and lifestyle values. Shared values form the bedrock of a successful marriage. Exploring and Adopting Values. For example, regarding honesty, is it merely telling the truth? Does honesty apply to tax returns? Secretly stashing funds? Concealing purchases? Hiding raises or bonuses? Hiding compulsions or addictions? What does honesty mean in your values? Is honesty or integrity your goal? Is there a difference? Examine the values you hold as standards of conduct. Learn to collaborate rather than compromise. Collaboration seeks to create something new and distinctive in resolving conflicting goals, ideas or beliefs. Fidelity. Fidelity is where transparency and integrity demands a higher standard than honesty. Does fidelity exclude pornography? Sexting? Sharing secrets with friends of the opposite sex? Establish your standards and boundaries. Trust. Deep emotional connection requires trust. Inability to control anger, stress, moods or behavior undermines trust. Accepting responsibility for consequences of choices is maturity. Crazy-making. Denying a secret, mood or feeling that a spouse is picking up on makes

them feel crazy and in a double bind; do I trust my partner or my intuition? Transparency. In risking rejection by revealing fears, dreams, faults, failures, and inadequacies, you discover if you are loved unconditionally. Secrets vs. Personal Privacy. Do I have to give up all privacy to be in a committed relationship? What is the line between personal privacy and a secret that threatens a relationship? There’s a simple guideline to honesty and fairness —the Golden Rule! Autonomy and Self-awareness. Honesty demands courage and self-awareness. If you expect honesty from others you must be scrupulously honest with yourself. Personal Integrity. Real intimacy demands honesty beyond mere truth-telling. Be true to yourself. Grow up and confront insecurities and self-deception. Money. Is how money is earned or spent less important than what money represents for you? Is it a means to an end or an end in itself? How much time and energy will you invest in acquiring money and stuff? What will you sacrifice to have them? Healthy and Satisfying Sex. Intimacy is often confused with sex. Partners need to honestly express what priority sex is to them. Negotiate an agreement that satisfies sexual appetites and desires.

Spring Makeover CHECKOUT THE NEW TRENDS IN KITCHEN CABINETS
BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DECORATOR, PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
IT’S SPRING and most of the new product introductions will be making their appearances over the next month or so. We’ve seen a lot of the new cabinet introductions already, and I can tell you they are more modern looking in both shape and colors. Grays are warmer with tones of taupe and tan. Door styles continue to be offered in traditional raised panel or shaker style, but have additional options of edge profiles, additional grooved moldings, and some have curved or “pillowed” profiles that soften the industrial look. Cabinet companies that used to offer only the traditional framed options are now beginning to manufacture frameless cabinets as well. These tend to be more modern looking as frameless cabinets do not have a face frame on the front of the box – the doors and drawers ARE the fronts of the cabinet boxes. These are often times used in more contemporary kitchens, commercial kitchens, and next time you are sitting in the exam room waiting for your doctor to come in, you’ll notice they probably have frameless cabinets there too.

Cabinets are becoming more and more the focal point of houses. Kitchens are the hub of entertainment and so wide open access to that area is more popular in new construction and also in remodeling. Walls that used to divide kitchens from dining and living areas are being removed to create more open floor plans. This means cabinets, countertops and backsplashes are front and center and “on display.” People use this openness to show them off. We also see a lot of the remodels now removing the soffits that were once popular and instead taking the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, providing more storage space and eliminating that feeling of the low ceiling. Instead, the kitchen is “taller” and feels more expansive. It seems like today’s kitchen designs are able to make better use of smaller floor plans as well with all the internal cabinet components that beef up your storage capacities. It’s not uncommon for the kitchen designs to include trash pullouts and base tray divider cabinets to house cookie sheets, muffin tins and cutting boards. There’s an assortment of pullout options for spices, cooking
and baking dishes, and even organizers for lids, pans and cutlery. With all these options, you just need to tell us where they should be based on your cooking style, and we can get your kitchen efficiently organized! There are other elements being incorporated to make kitchens more efficient, like multiple sinks, pot-fillers behind the cooktop, multiple ovens, microwave drawers, pop-up vents, sink disposal buttons and compost canisters.
It seems like today’s kitchen designs are able to make better use of smaller floor plans as well with all the internal cabinet components that beef up your storage capacities. Even with all these more modern amenities, we can’t lose focus of the “timeless” kitchen. One of the biggest concerns people have with remodels or even building new is that they don’t want to create a space that’s too trendy and will be outdated in a few years.
wood stain. This also will be neutral because over the years and exposure to ultraviolet light, it can’t yellow (remember the oak everyone is trying to replace, paint or decorate around now). If you go with darker cabinets now, you won’t have that issue a few years down the road.
I think there are a couple of ways to keep the cabinets timeless. One is to go with an opaque finish in a cream color. This is neutral so if you opted to go with gray highlights either in paint or accessories, you can change that to a warmer color in the future and your cabinets are still “fresh.” You can also go with a dark colored
Both of these colors are neutral and regardless of door style chosen, can coordinate with your countertops and backsplash, so if you wanted to go trendy, the backsplash is something that can easily be replaced ten years from now and would be a much less expensive update than new cabinets.

No matter what, each year we will have a spring with new product introductions. We’ll see some pretty cool things that we may have or want to have or we may see some things that will leave us scratching our heads wondering why anyone would want that as an option. Either way, it’s great because we will have choices. Go check out your local showroom for options and see if there is anything you can’t live without!

Paying the Price THE COST TO INSURE TEEN DRIVERS BY TREVOR CAMPBELL CAN I DRIVE? These three little words take on a whole new meaning when you’re the parent of a teen. When anyone gets behind the wheel of a car risks are involved. You might be a great driver, but you can’t control what’s happening around you. Those risks only increase when we talk about teen drivers. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with each mile, teen drivers are threetimes more likely to crash than someone 20 years and older. As a dad these statistics are frightening. As someone with more than 20 years in the insurance industry, these statistics make insuring teens one of the most costly challenges for both parents and insurance carriers. Insurance companies look at a number of things when calculating insurance rates, including age. In 2013, car crashes remained the leading cause of death for 13 to 19 year olds in the U.S. That kind of information is hard for carriers to ignore as they consider the risk involved with insuring young drivers. We often hear from parents unsure how best to handle protecting their teens. Whether you’re a parent who currently has a young driver or one who might in a few years – it’s good to know what to expect when your teen is ready to hit the road. Teen Drivers: Common Questions Q. If my teen has a permit, do I need to notify my insurance company?
teen get his or her own insurance policy? A. In order to get a separate policy, your teen must be the registered owner of the vehicle they’re driving. Some states do not allow anyone under 18 years of age to be registered owners of a vehicle. If your teen gets their license at 16, they may not be eligible for their own auto insurance policy until they turn 18 and are the registered owner of a car. Be sure to research your own state’s requirements and speak to your insurance agent if this is something you would like to pursue. Q. My son has his license, but we don’t let him drive due to grades. So we don’t have to add him to our policy, right? A. Wrong! Even if you have placed restrictions on your son or daughter’s ability to drive, once they get their license they need to be listed as a driver on your current policy.

Insurance carriers are working to find ways to reduce the cost of adding young drivers to parent’s policies, including offering good student discounts. By tying scholastic achievement with the opportunity to be licensed, many carriers have found these discounts helpful for parents from a pricing standpoint. Yes, your car insurance rates will go up, in some cases by a lot once you have a licensed teen driver. Working with an independent agent who has access to multiple carriers can help you find the best protection option without breaking the bank.

Cat Declawing KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU REQUEST THIS CONTROVERSIAL SURGICAL PROCEDURE BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL AFTER 25 YEARS OF PRACTICING veterinary medicine, I have still not heard the end of it – cat declawing continues to remain one of the hottest, most controversial topics in the world of companion animal welfare. Many pet owners have expressed dismay at how much damage their cats can do with their claws. Shredded shoes, clothes, torn drapes, scratched upholstery, snagged carpets. You get the picture? To some owners it seems like their pet has it in for them. Yet, to your kitty cat, scratching is a perfectly normal feline function! Cats need to scratch, for physical and emotional reasons, and we need to provide our cats with places to dig in with joy!
We recommend that cat owners use avoidance and training. Here are some suggestions and tips: Nail trimming. If you are at all unsure of how to correctly trim nails, it would be good to observe an expert. Ask your vet, a pet groomer or someone with experience to demonstrate. You want to be certain that you know how to do it correctly. Specifically, extend the claw without causing discomfort to your cat by pressing too hard. It’s also useful to be able to locate the vein inside the claw. (You want to stay well away from it to avoid great discomfort to your cat and a shower of blood!) When in doubt, trim only a tiny bit from the very tip. File the tips with an emery board.
The surgical declaw procedure results specifically in an amputated “fingertip” on each paw. It’s pretty radical and many countries have outlawed it, claiming that even with adequate pain control post operatively, it is barbaric, unnecessary, and leads to even more behavioral issues. They claim that many of these same declawed cats eventually wind up euthanized or in the shelter. The very thing that good intentioned owners were trying to avoid. You see the dilemma.

Provide alternatives for scratching. Give your cat his own place to scratch, one you can reasonably hope he will find more appealing than your carpet or couch. Vertical scratchers usually prefer posts and poles, horizontal scratchers use scratching pads. Posts are pieces of wood vertically anchored to a flat base (to imitate a tree) and are covered with

carpet, rope, cork or woven fabric. Scratching pads are rectangles made of corrugated cardboard, usually around 18 inches long and either 6 or 10 inches wide. Place these in prominent areas of the house where your pet likes to frequent! Teach your cat to use the post! Once he or she knows what it is for, you can slowly move it to the part of the room where you’d like it.

To some owners it seems like their pet has it in for them. Yet, to your kitty cat, scratching is a perfectly normal feline function! Invest in a trial of “Soft Paws.” They are easy to apply acrylic nails that stay on for one to two weeks (small learning curve taught in veterinary clinics).
To request an appointment: (509) 623-0431 or (888) 895-5951
Keep anxiety and boredom to a minimum. Pheromones like “Feliway” act as a mood stabilizer and calm cats in multiple cat households. Make home furnishings less desirable. Place strips of aluminum foil across your couch or chair (most cats dislike the crinkly feeling underfoot). Use “Sticky Paws,” strips of stickiness that you may place on problem furniture. Cover the side of a chair with a plastic sheet. Of course, these are all temporary until you can train them to scratch the “cool” stuff you just made or bought. Be patient during the training period, don’t remove the props too early! Spray off limit areas with bitter orange or apple repellant (available in pet stores). Declawing shouldn’t be the first strategy for solving a scratching problem. If you can, start early, when you first get your kitten. Give your felines a chance to learn and to follow the rules. You’ll be surprised at how well it works out.

A Mission in the Wilderness CATALDO MISSION IS RICH IN HISTORY BY ROBERT SINGLETARY, MUSEUM OF NORTH IDAHO PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE MUSEUM OF NORTH IDAHO
THE COEUR D’ALENE MISSION of the Sacred Heart, often called Cataldo Mission or the Old Mission, is the oldest and one of the most important historic structures in the state of Idaho. The mission played a major role in the development of the Inland Northwest, not only as a spiritual center for the Coeur d’Alene Indians, but as a crossroads for settlers, miners, construction crews and the U.S. military. According to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, the history of the Old Mission was in the making in the early 1700s when a head chief by the name of Circling Raven had a vision that told about the coming of a new kind of medicine man wearing a black robe and carrying a cross. This prophecy was passed on to succeeding

head chiefs and became an important element of the tribe’s spiritual tradition. During the early 1800s groups Indians made their way into Northwest, possibly before the Clark Expedition and David explorations in the area.

In fact David Thompson mentioned in his journals that he hired some of the Iroquois as guides. Between 1812 and 1830 a band of Iroquois visited the Flathead Indians in Montana. Some of the Iroquois were Catholic and it was from them that the Flatheads and eventually the Coeur d’Alenes would learn about the Catholic religion and the importance

of having a “Black Robe” among them. The desire to have a “Black Robe” became so strong in the Flathead Tribe that four expeditions were sent to St. Lewis between 1831 and 1839 to find the black robed missionaries. On the fourth expedition they met Father Jean De Smet in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was so impressed with their strong desire for a black robe that he visited the Flatheads in 1840. As a result, St. Mary’s Mission was established. When the Coeur d’Alenes heard about Father De Smet’s visit to the Flatheads they were convinced that Circling Raven’s vision had come true. Father De Smet met with the Coeur d’Alenes and established the Mission of the Sacred Heart near the St. Joe River. However, flooding became a problem.
Another church was built in De Smet. It was constructed with a beautiful gothic design. After the new mission was built, the Old Mission was used very little, except for special occasions. In 1924 the Jesuit Order deeded the building to the Diocese of Boise. By that time the Old Mission was in very poor condition and was in need of major repair. In 1925 Bishop Gorman of Boise appointed a committee to plan for the restoration of the old landmark. For the next two years various community groups from Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Kellogg and Wallace raised funds for a complete restoration. On August 15, 1963, the National Park Service declared the Cataldo Mission a Registered National
In 1846 the Mission of the Sacred Heart was moved to a high knoll overlooking the Coeur d’Alene River, a few miles east of the present city of Coeur d’Alene. Father Antonio Revalli designed and constructed the mission church with the help of two other priests and members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. The main structure was up and in use by 1853. The mission was finally completed when Father Caruana had the inside and outside walls covered with clapboard. With the building of the Mullan Road and the discovery of gold, many settlers eventually came into the region. When a reservation was established for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe the land around the mission church was not included.

Historic Landmark. By the 1970s the mission was again in need of major repair. In 1974 the Idaho Bicentennial Commission took on the restoration of the mission as its first project. When the restoration was completed in 1975 the Cataldo Mission was designated a state park. Today, the Cataldo Mission is one of the major tourist attractions in North Idaho. Thousands of people visit the Mission and participate in a variety of events that are held annually on the Mission grounds. One of the most important events is the Feast of Assumption, which is held every year on August 15 by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

THE ALL NEW PEAK IF YOU’VE BEEN DRIVING up and down Government Way between Prairie and Honeysuckle, you’ve probably noticed a lot of earth being moved around at Peak Tennis. With 35 years in the fitness industry, the owners of Peak Health and Wellness know it’s important to always be looking ahead for the latest in workout trends, technology, classes and nutrition. This is why they are especially excited to unveil their brand new expanded Hayden club, located inside the Hayden tennis facility. The now 60,000 square-foot wellness center features an enormous second floor gym space, additional group classrooms, and a new court adjacent to the four indoor tennis courts. “When the Tennis Center was built two years ago, it was built with a plan of creating a second floor,” explained co-owner Tallie Althen. “I love the openness of the building now, and it’s created a place where we can make fitness fun and worthwhile, so come out and play!” Among the new options for having a non-traditional workout is the expansion on the ground floor. Here you will find a large state-of-the-art space where group fitness classes are held. Everything from high intensity cardio burns to movement and stretching classes for older adults are taught. Adjacent to the group fitness room is a room entirely devoted to spin classes. It is set up with bikes and the class instructor positioned at the front of the room. Spin classes continue to be popular in the area with the amount of endurance race, triathlon, and ironman athletes that train in North Idaho. Also on the ground floor is another court that can be used for basketball or the rapidly growing sport of pickleball. Not sure what pickleball is? Stop by and someone is happy to show you and explain the rules. Moving into the expanded upstairs level, guests will find a massive space with enough cardio equipment, machines and free weights to hit every muscle in your body. “When we first opened the Ironwood location, weights were an afterthought; everyone was all about tennis, racquetball and aerobics,” said Althen. “Today we’re seeing a big shift towards weights as people learn more about the benefits.” Peak is designed for members to find a way to not only get in a good workout but also find a fun way of doing it. Another added expansion is a second floor yoga room. Professionals teach many variations of the class including hot yoga. You won’t even notice the heating unit, but it can get the room up to hot yoga temperatures in just 10 minutes. Floor to ceiling windows give amazing views of the surrounding mountains as you enjoy your workout. Peak has hosted wellness fairs, community donation drives for the Boys and Girls Club, Toys for Tots, and recently held the Kootenai County Police and Fire Memorial Foundation Charity ride. Events like these will continue and expand at the new all-encompassing location. Despite just

going through a major expansion, they are already looking at new ideas and continued growth that will be coming soon. “Every owner in this club is passionate about fitness and trying new things, and we’re proud to give this to the community that continues to support us,” said Althen. Stop by and take a tour for yourself as Peak Health and Wellness is ready and able to keep you on the path for a healthy and fun life. S U C IN FO TEACHING TECHNOLOGY SKILLS IN OUR SCHOOLS By Jani Gonzalez
IN TODAY’S WORLD, we’ve grown comfortable with electronic devices and have come to rely on the technology that powers them. But there’s a gap between using the technology and understanding it. And it’s having that level of understanding that will lead our students to success in their future jobs. “In the education world, many think we should be doing hands on learning like with electronics. In a large part, coding has become a fall back. It gets even kindergarten students thinking that way,” said Charles Buck, the Associate Vice President and Center Executive Officer for the University of Idaho. While teaching technology, including software coding, is not going to make everyone a computer programmer, learning technology skills is a part of our world that students need to navigate. “If you think of computers as a language – all of us can read, but most of us can’t write it,” he said. The tide is changing in Idaho’s public schools, and Buck credits the Idaho Technology Council (ITC) for expanding the state’s ability to teach
business and technology. The ITC negotiated a statewide contract with the organization Code.org which provides online lesson plans for kindergarten through 12th grade. Teacher training to offer the code.org curriculum is offered through the Idaho Digital Learning Academy (IDLA).
While teaching technology, including software coding, is not going to make everyone a computer programmer, learning technology skills is a part of our world that students need to navigate. Introducing Code in Our Classrooms ITC’s primary goal is to facilitate teaching computer science in Idaho’s public schools. “Idaho was the first state that formed a national state agreement with Code.org. We did that

through IDLA to help make connecting points with technology and schools,” said Jay Larsen, CEO and Founder of the ITC. He said that the governor and state legislature approved a $12 million STEM Action Center (STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programs). The center will focus on developing innovative ways to integrate STEM education in Idaho’s public schools. Learning code, or at least becoming familiar with it, is something Larsen believes is a necessity for today’s students to thrive in a competitive workforce. The ITC has helped train 170 K through 5 teachers in how to implement technology skills in the classroom. Ideally, he’d like to see the current elementary population obtain stronger technology skills as they progress through school. “Computer science is very foundational, but only 7 to 8 percent of schools teach it,” he said. “Two of the top jobs out of college are in computer science. It’s used in every industry. This is a space that is critical to fill in every state.” Learning code also teaches students about
problem solving and critical thinking. Larsen hopes that eventually schools will offer computer science classes a core class.
“By revising it, we’re looking toward the future to see what will be required. At baseline, our students need an understanding of how programs are created,” he said.
“The hope is that kids get inspired,” Larsen said.
Learning computer science means being computer literate. With the ubiquitous use and reliance of smartphones, students should become familiar in how to create the apps they utilize. He added that learning computer “soft skills” is also important. These include communication and listening skills and customer service.
CDA School District Future Changes to Curriculum At present, the Coeur d’Alene School District requires that most elementary students receive instruction at least once weekly at the computer laboratory. There, students learn navigation skills, keyboarding and digital citizenship – how to behave online, be safe and maintain privacy. This year, they are also including lessons from Code.org.
Post Falls: Increasing Exposure to Technology Post Falls has set goals to improving the accessibility their teachers and students have to acquiring technology skills. Their goals include training staff and teaching students to be informed researchers and effective users. The school aims to have students become familiar and responsible with computer applications and also develop proficient communication skills via technology systems.
“It’s amazing how it’s taking off. Math and science (teachers) are integrating computer science into those lessons,” said Seth Deniston, Director of Technology for Coeur d’Alene Public Schools. At the high schools, they have a variety of technology electives from which students can select to fulfill a one credit requirement. But Deniston said they are in the midst of revising some of the technology requirements for the district and currently have a draft with the school board for approval. The new requirements include adding components in computer science, digital citizenship, creativity and innovation and communication and collaboration.
The courses offered include Microsoft IT Academy, computer graphics, web design and computer science. Students in the Microsoft IT Academy receive six certification credentials showing technology mastery. In a recent school newsletter about the latest class to complete, PFHS Business & Marketing Technology Teacher was quoted as saying, “We’re committed to providing our students with the most up-to-date knowledge and skills

so they can pursue higher education, and secure jobs that contribute to the economy and their communities,” said Angie Blair. Fernan STEM Academy: A Different Approach Fernan STEM Academy in Coeur d’Alene incorporates technology in the classroom as much as possible. They have multiple devices to aid instruction. Students use computerized learning programs for daily math and reading, but their purpose is to supplement, not replace, instruction, noted Principal Bill Rutherford.
“There’s a percentage of kids who will want to get into the coding … It’s probably important that all kids have a basic understanding for the logic,” she said. She’d like to see the school district provide every student with an electronic device to aid in their studies as textbooks do, but the money to fund that is difficult to come by.
increasing and an introduction to code and an understanding of how our technology works is coming to the forefront of our education needs. We can no longer take technology for granted. An understanding of it is required for a successful future of our young generation and our future economy.
All CDA, Post Falls and Lakeland high school students have the opportunity to attend the Kootenai Technical Education Campus (KTEC) where a track in computer networking is taught. However, technology in our schools is
To learn more about technology skills for any age, visit Code.org for free online lessons.
“Our belief is that nothing can replace the interaction between a student and a teacher and that students must work in collaboratively teams to create well-rounded learners,” he said. Students of all ages practice coding on a weekly basis. The underlying purpose is to understand how technology works. “Many of our students want to become game, app or program designers and coding offers a basic introduction into that world. Plus, it offers students another language to communicate,” he said. Lakeland: Developing Knowledgeable Users At Lakeland schools, teachers also use a variety of tools to supplement instruction such as Google classroom, where teachers and students can communicate and post lesson assignments. Current requirements at the high school level include keyboarding and navigation of computer application, comprising of desktop publishing, webpage design and internet technology. “It’s fairly rigorous and includes anything you’d use in an office,” said Georgeanne Griffith, Director of Information Systems for the district. While they do not require computer science, they have it as an elective in addition to classes from Code.org. There are no firm requirements at the elementary level. The district offers the keyboarding program, “Typing Agent,” but any other technology skills taught are dependent on the teacher, Ms. Griffith explained. Keyboarding is a requirement in the junior high grades. Ms. Griffith underscored the importance of having knowledgeable users of social media and having an awareness of cyberbullying and online privacy.

Kelly Horning - Coeur d’Alene High School Kelly Horning is an athlete who loves the thrill of contact sports. The 15-year-old freshman at Coeur d’Alene High School has already lettered in volleyball and basketball and has her eyes set on spring track. “My favorite part about basketball is definitely the physicality of it! I love fighting for that jump ball!” said Kelly. In volleyball, “My favorite part … is when one of my teammates or I get a really good block or kill and turning into the huddle and celebrating!” Kelly never stops playing sports – she also plays on an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team called Pump and Run in Spokane and also plays on the Thunder Volleyball Club team. In spite of her love of sports, one of her biggest challenges came from her height and young age. She overcame it by working hard to earn her spot on the court.

“The biggest challenge on the court is proving that you deserve to play. … I had to earn playing time,” Kelly said. Although college is a few years away, Kelly knows she’ll play college sports. She’s wanted to ever since she was in the third grade. “Playing a sport in college would be a big deal to me,” she said. The University of Oregon is a possibility to study athletic training or physical therapy. Until then, she has the strength and support of her teammates and coaches. “It’s nice to be a part of something, a part of a group that has similar interests and goals is truly special.”

Whitney Meier - Lake City High School Lake City High School senior, Whitney Meier, knows how to set a goal and reach it. The 17-year-old basketball player made it her goal as a freshman to break a school record. And she did just that last year when she broke the school record for the most 3-point shots made in a season (58). Most recently, at a state tournament game, she tied a school record for the most points scored during a game. She was also within one shot of tying the state record for most 3-point shots in a tournament game. Without realizing it, Whitney has followed the words of wisdom of a former Lake City basketball player, Jen Kerns. “‘Once you step on the court, your seconds start ticking. You have to go out there and work as hard as you can and enjoy every second,’” Whitney recalled Kerns saying.
Judging from achievements in the sport, she’s well on her way to accomplishing anything she wants. Whitney has an agreement to play basketball at North Idaho College while she studies for an associates in zoology. Eventually, she wants to attend Central Washington University or the University of Idaho to prepare for a career in caring for zoo primates. Whitney cherishes the relationships she’s made in basketball. “Being part of a great team means that you work hard at all times, you rise up and be a leader when you need to lead, to be unselfish in play and in friendship, to have each other’s back, and to always focus on your goals. The last four years my basketball team has become my second family and I have created bonds that will never be broken.”

North Idaho College NIC HELPS MACHINISTS BUILD CAREERS
BY KAYE THORNBRUGH PHOTO COURTESY OF NORTH IDAHO COLLEGE
Program instructor Kurt Kimberling has 30 years of industry experience. He’s also an NIC alumni, a graduate of the machining program, as is the other instructor, Joe Okon. “I’m teaching what I would love to do as a hobby. It doesn’t get better,” Kimberling said.
Machinist At NIC: Intermediate or Advanced Technical Certificate, two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree. In-Demand: 6 percent growth in job demand between now and 2024. How much will I earn? Median pay $41,510 per year.
ABOVE An NIC student works with a Kurt vise in the college’s Machining and CNC Technology program. The demand for machinists increases every year.
LOOK AROUND – almost everything you see has one thing in common: a machinist helped make it. From your phone, to your car, to the spare change in your pocket, there’s a machinist behind nearly every item you interact with daily. Machining is part of every industry, and the Machining and CNC Technology program at North Idaho College can jump-start a career in this field.
Kimberling teaches basic to advanced machining concepts, such as precision measuring, operating a milling machine, and operating computer numerical control (CNC) machines. Upon completing the program, students will be qualified for entry-level machinist positions. Because machining is one of the biggest parts of manufacturing, there’s a wide variety of jobs for machinists. The Machining and CNC Program is one of several NIC programs that will soon have a new home in the Career and Technical Education Facility in Rathdrum for the fall semester in 2016. Currently, the machining program has a full roster of 36 students – 18 in the freshman class and 18 in the sophomore class. But the program is limited by space. The new facility will be able to accommodate as many as 28 students per class for a total 56 students per year.

“I see it as an improvement,” Kimberling said. “We’ll have more room. I’m hoping to greatly expand the program.” Max Clemons learned welding in the military. When he came to NIC, he first enrolled in the welding program then switched to the machining program. “I could weld anything, but I had limited on-the-job training,” Clemons said. In the machining program, though, he received comprehensive training. “Now I can do anything, from top to bottom.” At NIC, Clemons said, the instructors teach the fundamental skills, and from there, students can explore what fields interest them and how they can use machining to pursue those interests. Because machining technology is used in so many industries, the applications are virtually endless. “They give you an opportunity to see what interests you,” Clemons said, “and then they challenge you to think outside the box.” There’s a high demand for machinists, Kimberling said. In fact, jobs for machinists will increase by 6 percent between now and 2024. “It’s a great job to be in,” Kimberling said. “It’s a job that has supported me and my family for 30-some years. I’m passionate about it. I enjoy giving other people the opportunity.”

Irish Shenanigans CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY WITH FLARE! BY MELODY VANHORN EVERY YEAR ON MARCH 17 the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the world observe St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day is the day where everyone can claim to be a little bit Irish, and in Coeur d’Alene we like to celebrate our heritage in style! On March 12 there will be a grand parade through downtown Coeur d’Alene in celebration of our Irish heritage. This year’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 4pm at the corner of 8th and Sherman. ow did we get here so fast? It doesn’t seem long ago that a mobile phone was simply one that didn’t have a cord attached to the wall, you set your schedule around the day and time your favorite TV show was on, and term paper research was done in the pages of a book inside a library. Today, everything we would ever want to know or see is at our fingertips, and through DVRs and on-demand services, we dictate when to watch our favorite shows. Initially, most people thought taking a phone call in a group of people was rude, but now when we get together our phones are out on the table and often used as an interactive piece, showing a video, photos of our family, answering a question or settling a debate. Just as with the appearance of the printing press, daily newspaper, radio broadcast and color television, leading companies see the Internet as a vital platform to reach their consumers and get their message into the home. Digital marketing is the latest trend in branding to the masses, and the options online continue to evolve and grow. So what is it and how does a business get started? Let’s start with a few definitions. First, what exactly is digital marketing and what is not considered digital marketing? Traditional print, billboards, TV, and radio do not fall into the digital definition because these mediums do not provide instant data on exactly how many impressions your ad created. It’s not to say these mediums are not effective marketing platforms; it is just more difficult to track the number of direct respondents from the ad and exactly how many people saw it. Some consumers will respond to a call to action (coupon, specific
While digital marketing is an emerging and extremely important marketing tool, it should also coincide with other forms of media marketing. Fortune 500 retailers are taking full advantage of digital products but are still forking over tens of millions in commercials, billboards, sponsorships and print ads. All major companies know that putting all your eggs into one type of media is not an effective approach, and spreading your message over a multitude of mediums is the best way to build and maintain brand awareness. At Living Local 360, we are doing the same. We take your branding into multiple platforms including print,

offer), but ask yourself an honest question – when was the last time you walked into a business and told the person at the counter the reason you are in their store was because you saw their ad on page seven of the newspaper, heard their radio spot at 3:45 this afternoon, or saw their commercial on the morning news? It happens, but not all consumers are going to share this information and it was probably the combination of seeing multiple ads in multiple platforms that ultimately lead them to the storefront. This is called top-of-mind awareness and is the ultimate goal for any company of any size. The short of it is that digital marketing is a term used for a group of interactive products that target specific audiences using measurable digital technologies. Some of these technologies include social media marketing which places display ads and content inside Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms as a way to connect directly with consumers who have shown interest in your products. Utilizing hashtags like “#McDonaldsbreakfast” allows companies to directly reach out to people who enjoy their goods or services, and also allows them to monitor real-time feedback from consumers. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and website ranking allows businesses to be listed in a general web search. This can be done both by a paid service and organically, the latter being much more difficult. If you want to be the first business listed on a Google search of “Used furniture Seattle,” the search engine will guarantee your spot for a price. The more the search term is used and the broader it is, the higher the price. “Used furniture Seattle” will cost you much more than “Used Sealy Queen Mattress Seattle.” Hiring a professional SEO company will also help with your rankings as
social, web, search engines and email. A well-rounded marketing plan should include all these avenues as your company works toward top-of-mind awareness. Each impression your company makes is another reminder to the consumer. So when the time comes that they need your product or service, your business instantly comes to mind. You might not have tens of millions to market your small business, but no matter your budget, it goes further with Living Local 360 and the multi-media platform we offer. We are educators and are happy to help guide you through the ever-changing marketing landscape. Drop us a line anytime. Info@livinglocal360.com.
TECHNOLOGY a good company stays on top of the algorithms each search engine uses to rank sites for relevance. Getting your company exposure organically is difficult but can be accomplished with some devotion. Search engines used to be keywordfocused, meaning the number of times “Used furniture Seattle” appeared on your site would determine your page rank. Today, the ranking system is based on the frequency of updates to the site and if it is optimized for mobile phones. This is why when searching for a small business website, you will often see that business’s Facebook page ranked above their homepage. This is often because they are far more active on their social media sites and perhaps have not updated their business webpage in months or sometimes years. Businesses can tie social media feeds into their homepage, update photos and include blogs or articles and various other content which will all help increase the ranking organically. Email marketing is a way to reach a large number of consumers with the same message without the costs of printing and postage in traditional direct mail marketing. Traditional direct mail allows you to choose specific postal routes that have a general income level and household demographics, but email marketing can get much more specific. The
THE SHORT OF IT IS THAT DIGITAL MARKETING IS A TERM USED FOR A GROUP OF INTERACTIVE PRODUCTS THAT TARGET SPECIFIC AUDIENCES USING MEASURABLE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES. platform that Living Local 360 utilizes gives us access to over 90 million email addresses. We then break these down into the city or area the client wants to target. From there we can narrow the field even further based on income level, gender, size of family, interests, college education level and many more categories. Data from an email campaign will show you exactly how many inboxes the message was delivered to, how many opened the email, and how many interacted with an offer inside the email. This gives you a real-time cost analysis on what it costs per impression (person seeing

your message) and lead (person accepting your offer or showing interest). These platforms also contain physical addresses so you can narrow down direct mail follow-up pieces and send those only to consumers who have shown interest in your product, saving you money and knowing you are targeting only warm and hot leads. A more recent trend that you’ve probably noticed is retargeted IP (Internet Protocol) advertising. For example, you go to Amazon. com to look for a new digital camera. You leave the site without purchasing an item and go next to CNN.com or ESPN.com and low and behold, there’s a side banner ad with the products you were just looking at. This is also common on social media sites if you have been discussing products through posts. Retailers are able to follow your web visit history using your IP address. New websites are now formatted with a blank ad space that companies can purchase and use the information they have gathered on your interests and retarget an ad tailored specifically to your search. This will become more and more popular with small businesses as they will be able to effectively buy space on some of the most popular national websites without having to fork over a huge amount of money to the site itself and reach consumers not in your target area. Much like other mediums, there is a balance between reaching your consumer effectively and overwhelming them with ads to the point of discontent with your brand. If you sat down to watch the evening news and got five minutes
LEFT Today, the ranking system is based on the frequency of updates to the site and if it is optimized for mobile phones.
of news content followed by twelve minutes of commercials, would you pay any attention to that or would you change the channel? The same applies to radio. Stations need to make money through advertisers, but they also need consumers to consume the media around which the advertisers have spent their money. With all the new opportunities seemingly appearing every month with digital, it will be easy for companies to over saturate and frustrate potential customers. But as with other mediums, digital will eventually balance out the right amount of ads per experience. One unique way to accomplish this is through digital content marketing. Digital content marketing starts with really rich content that people actually care about – including killer images. Then it’s delivering that content when and where your customers want it in hopes they like it and tell all their friends and followers. Building trust in your brand is key to growth, and a referral of your product or service from a trusted friend or family member is the golden ticket of marketing. Making sure readers can see the article on a device that they use every day, especially the one attached to their hip, is vital. But above all, don’t overwhelm people with your sales pitch. Keep it simple and teach them something so they consider you a valuable resource not just a company pushing product. The unique thing about marketing through digital channels is that it goes way beyond messaging. Given all the ways brands can connect with consumers online, whether in
PROGRESSIVE social environments, via mobile apps, paid media or blogs, each interaction leaves an impression of your brand. So in many respects, digital is marketing. So how does one get started in the digital world? If you have a homepage for your business, you’ve already started. If you don’t, it’s really about time! Typically local business websites don’t have to go into great length. Your company’s contact information and location, a little background on the company, and the products and services you offer give people what they need to know. Your professional website gives an impression that you are a legitimate business. Many consumers, including middle-aged men and women, are interacting more and more with social media. Have your page include fun content, “friends only” offers, events you’re hosting, sales, or partnerships with the community you support. Again, the frequency of posting will help your social media sites and feeds remain relevant; stagnant pages will disappear from most consumers’ news feeds. Most businesses can handle these platforms without being overwhelmed, but if you’re ready to take the next step in reaching your digital audience it’s best to seek out a professional company whose expertise is in this field. You wouldn’t have your plumber fix your computer and the same applies to your marketing efforts – find an expert you can trust.

Digital marketing is another platform to get your brand and message in front of your audience. The great advantages to digital is the ability to track exactly how many times that message is being seen and make adjustments to not only where the message is seen but perhaps the message itself. Your digital ad might not be performing as you had hoped, but if you make the change from a 1-800 number to a local number on the ad, you will be able to track and see if it’s the message that needed changing, not the medium. We are tied to our phones and tablets, and it doesn’t look like that will be ending anytime soon. Reaching customers on the devices that are in front of their face from the time their alarm goes off in the morning to the last status updated before bed is paramount in staying competitive in the digital age. Savvy marketers are already looking for what’s coming next. Nothing will remain as it is as technology continues to expand. The digital world is here and your consumer is living in it all day. Time to go say hello!

The Ease of Crossing What you need to know for a smooth crossing into Canada
MANY STORIES DRIFT through the network of human relationships and social media both good and bad regarding vehicular crossings into Canada or for that matter any Port of Entry where driving or riding across in a vehicle is the means. The Panhandle has two such border crossings into Canada: Eastport which operates round the clock all year long and Port Hill (Kingsgate on the Canadian side) open seven days a week between 7am and 11pm only. The stories are mostly good, no problem; but some are negative, expressing a wear on nerves or frustrations of untimely or ill-thought encounters. I visited Port Director, Jeffrey Lisius, at East Port recently to clarify what one should know for a smoother border crossing without undue hassle. There is a Difference Just to clarify, the good folks working the Ports of Entry are not Border Patrol agents. They are U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel. Both agencies work for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, but their responsibilities are not the same. Border Patrol monitors, observes and handles illegal crossings outside the Ports of Entry, to be clear: these would be people who for one reason or another try to circumvent customs. They may be carrying contraband, drugs or anything illegal on foot, by ATV, or in a boat, on horseback or by air. They may be individuals trying to slip across the border to avoid arrest or for some other ill-intended reason want to avoid detection. Not a good idea. This article is not for them; this is for the general, law-abiding public who just wants to go in and come back

out on a business trip, for a visit, a vacation or a weekend experience. To Take or Not to Take Crossing the border should pose no real problem nor give rise to any undue stress or concern. Just know what you can do, what you can carry and how you should respond when border personnel ask questions. It’s that simple. Don’t try to hide anything; it’s not a game. Likewise, look over everything you are carrying in your vehicle when you intend to cross over. Don’t carry anything you don’t plan on using or need, including people you don’t know.
With a little digging, you can gain accurate understanding by looking through all related points and tabs on the Ports of Entry website: www.cbp.gov/contact/ports/id. The “id” is for Idaho. If you want to know another state’s ports, just slip the appropriate abbreviation into that slot. Here’s another site where you can find rather thorough explanations of dos and don’ts: www.
ezbordercrossing.com/. But for facts and/ or solutions posed on any privately run site, including that of Coeur d’Alene Living Local or any other media outlet where this information is presented, you are better off getting it straight from the horse’s mouth. For that, go to the government’s website. The Basics You are better off having a passport, complete with all the current information about where you reside, who you are, and so forth. Visit your post office for that and allow a little time in the processing. Your spouse and your kids, anyone in your family should have one. If you are carrying passengers or especially children of another family, be sure they are clearly documented as to who
they are, why they are with you, where you are taking them as well as where and when you expect to return to the United States. Answer every question truthfully. You can trust that border personnel on both sides of the border share databases containing just about everything known about you. Yup! Don’t try to cover up. Get caught lying and you’re likely going to be turned back or charged with a crime. And because those databases keep a

record of each time you cross the border and are turned back, a lie will make it tougher to cross on another occasion, if not impossible. This applies to minors as well. If you or one of your passengers has a pending warrant, is in a criminal trial or otherwise carrying any record of a criminal conviction, you will want to check out current border regulations BEFORE you get to the checkpoint. And be thorough. EasyBorderCrossing.com has adequate information for you under “Prior Criminal Offenses.” This is hard for some folks, but be courteous. The person addressing you has the responsibility to observe rightly who you are and what your intentions might be. Courtesy is a good thing. The Golden Rule applies. Sarcastic remarks and/or political comments thrown off the cuff can significantly delay your time in front of a
port official. It’s not the time or the place to exhibit a privately held bias or testy attitude. Always answer only the questions you are asked. It’s not the place to be witty. Remember, the person in front of you has a responsibility to safeguard other citizens. Don’t test them. Just be clear and answer what you are asked as truthfully as you can. Give them reason to suspect something and they can ask as many questions as they want to ask. Just be forthright. Remove sunglasses so they can see your eyes.
Don’t drink before crossing. Any signs of being drunk or drugged will end your trip. Be sure you’re buckled up (everyone in the car). Have proper ID’s for everyone with current

addresses. If transporting a pet or animals, have the correct documents with you, ready to show. Your vet can advise the proper documentation necessary. Take only what you need, even in your trunk and don’t, please don’t try to take fruit or produce across in a cooler. You may have to eat it right there! Or give it away. That’s just a summary, but it should be enough to help you enjoy your experience. Please explore the websites for more information. Those who work the ports of entry are there on your behalf. They are good people whose job is to protect us all. Treat them well, respect them, give them what they need to know, and you’ll be on your way.

Spruce Up Your Spring Look ACCESSORIZE AND COLOR COORDINATE
BY MICHELLE PHILLIPS
SPRING IS JUST AROUND the corner, and it is time to start thinking about putting away your heavier sweaters, coats and winter scarves. It is much easier to transition by having these items out of your main closet. Each season simply take a huge plastic tub and fold these items away to lighten your closet. This is also a great time to purge. Consider each item carefully – some pieces are great crossover items for the cool evenings, but some are just too heavy to keep in your spring and summer collections. Any items not worn last season should be donated. The chances of wearing those items next year are slim. All denim, leggings, lighter weight jackets and sweaters can be kept in your spring and summer closet.
Be sure to include a pair of capri leggings that complement sundresses, long tees and tunics.
Now consider what you may be missing that will bring your look up-to-date. Be sure to look at shoe trends and add a few new pairs – perhaps a new pair of brightly colored Nikes to inspire your workout, or a pair of sparkly flip-flops or tall wedges that elongate legs but are still comfortable and easy to walk in. Next look at your basics – are your leggings looking tired and faded? If so, toss them and add a few new pairs. Be sure to include a pair

of capri leggings that complement sundresses, long tees and tunics. Tees by Tina are our favorite basics and will pair nicely with any of your layering pieces. Choose a signature color for all of your accessories. This keeps your look consistent and makes packing for trips a snap! Choose a coral or other bright color for a sun-kissed look, or make your signature hue your eye color so that your eyes really stand out. Next choose your signature handbag for the season. Perhaps last year’s will work, but you may want to choose something on-trend to create that fresh and fun look! Fashion magazines are showing woven and basket handbags as summer’s bag of choice. Now is also the perfect time to visit a local makeup artist to freshen up your makeup routine. Techniques, colors and quality change rapidly in the cosmetic market, so consider an update each spring and fall. Happy Spring! HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
Step One
YOU DON’T NEED TO GET IN SHAPE TO GET IN SHAPE
BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR
SO HERE WE ARE at that time of the year again. The interim space after the failed New Year’s resolution of getting healthy and the planning of bathing suit season. You feel like you still have time to NOT start your exercise and diet regime with enough chronological wiggle room to lose a few pounds before it gets warmer outside. Maybe you’ll start going to the gym, but only after you figure out how to get into enough shape to not embarrass yourself at the gym. And there continues the cycle of failure. Why do people think they should get into shape to get into shape? This makes no rational sense, yet I hear it close to every day. This is

the opposite of a good idea my dear friends. Not having adequate strength and endurance is not a productive reason to put off a training program. Who’s to say what level you should be at to begin? You go to a training program to GAIN strength, endurance, mobility, and stability; not to show how much you already have. Going to a fitness class isn’t about the physical caliber of the people around you; it’s about supporting those people in their goals and them supporting you in yours. Most of the time I am fixing poor movement patterns on people, I’m not putting them on display to prove anything, ever. I am looking for your progress, not perfection.

The intimidation people feel towards group training is unfortunate. I love seeing the camaraderie of perfect strangers when they are in a physically challenging environment. If you feel like you are in a competition you didn’t sign up for and you just want to get healthy and feel great about yourself, then that’s exactly what you should look for. I believe that competition has no place in a training environment. That’s not to say we can’t work for specific strength goals to later put to the test in a fun and family style competition, but the daily practice of strength is no place for competition. You should never feel like you failed a workout. A workout or training session is about moving your body through space in all ranges of motion, on all planes, both loaded and unloaded. You need to figure out if you have any dysfunctional movement patterns. If so, address them and then begin to add complexity and load to these movements. There is nothing like the feeling of getting both mentally and physically stronger and more fit. When you walk into a fitness center, studio or gym, you should feel welcome, not like an outsider. Go to the gym to create your goals with a qualified professional or instructor. It should not hurt to go to the gym. Find a
program where you can lift heavy to prevent injury instead of inducing it. Where you can test your limits without testing your good sense. Make sure if you have questions, you ask them. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. As health, strength and fitness professionals, we work for you, the client. It is our job to make sure you move towards and hopefully accomplish YOUR goals – not put you into a workout that is one size fits all. Chances are, you will feel like the exception of that one size. Make sure that whatever you decide to do, you believe in it! There are many reasons to start a fitness program. You want to lose weight, you want to get stronger, you want to feel better, you want to look better, you might be depressed, lonely or tired. The reasons are endless. Don’t be afraid to start, be afraid not to. In order for your life to change, you have to change your life. Don’t wait for a feeling, an opportunity or a sign. This is the time to jump. No more waiting or conditional excuses. All of us have different goals, genes, body types, limitations, tastes and dislikes. There is no cookie cutter mold that works for everyone, but everyone has the ability to realize their undeniable potential. Results or excuses – you decide!

Get Up and Move BE AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF SITTING ON THE JOB BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY MUCH RESEARCH has been done recently recognizing the dangers of sitting too much. According to ACE Fitness Journal, lack of activity during the day can lead to many adverse health conditions including (but not limited to): Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, some forms of cancer, weight gain and even premature death. Standing up at work does little to decrease effects, and even exercising after work does not eliminate the health risks caused by too much sitting. Research has shown that small workouts done during the day at work not only help with avoiding health problems, but aid in happiness, mental clarity, creativity and productivity, and has even been linked to higher pay. Many workers do not participate in physical activity during the day simply because there is a perceived lack of time, or, in some cases, weather and lack of a proper exercise facility deter workers from getting out and exercising during lunch break. Research has shown that the duration and type of exercise done during the workday are not as important as the frequency of the exercises. In other words, taking a few minutes each hour to participate in a short burst of activity can have long lasting effects for productivity during the work day and for overall health. In the ACE February issue of its fitness journal, there are ideas for brief circuit training at the desk. Workout #1: Full-Body Strength To be performed approximately five minutes every 60 to 90 minutes while at work. Set timer 5 minutes and cycle through 5 to 15 repetitions of each set until time runs out.
flexed 90 degrees and press back up. Hip bridges - Lie on the floor face up and knees bent to 45 degrees, feet flat on floor. Drive hips toward ceiling until there is straight line from knees to shoulders.
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
Dips - Seated in chair with arms on arm rest, slowly push up until hips are elevated out of chair. Workout #2: Cardio To be performed approximately four minutes each hour. Exercises done in circuitstyle format, performing each exercise approximately 20 seconds. Cycle through exercise set until time runs out.

High knee march - March in place. Plank knee tuck - Starting in push up position, bring one knee to either same side elbow or opposite side elbow. Repeat with opposite leg. Side-Step toe touch - Step out to the right side and reach down to touch right foot (or knee, depending on mobility) with left hand making sure to bend at knee and hip. Repeat with other leg. Standing hamstring curl - From standing, bend knee and bring foot toward same side glute. Return foot to floor and repeat with opposite leg. These are just samples of the many variations of exercises that can be done at work or during any long durations of sitting when time is a factor. Watching the clock and making sure to get up and move on a regular basis can have great pay offs in the long run.

Fueling Your Fitness MAXIMIZE YOUR TRAINING
BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD
SPRING IS IN THE AIR, and for many that means training for this summer’s races. Whether it’s a 5K, half or full marathon, sprint triathlon or the Ironman, athletes need nutrients to fuel their fitness. Typically, when we think of sports nutrition, we think about the proper balance of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat). These nutrients are the athlete’s foundation for fuel – supplying energy, amino and fatty acids to optimize muscle, nerve, brain and energy function. Without proteins, carbohydrates and fats, the athlete can simply not function – a car that has run out of gas. On the flip side, even a car with gas is not always a highly functioning vehicle. That’s where micronutrients come in. It’s easy to think of them like the accessories to your fitness “vehicle” – the windshield wipers, the radio, the steering wheel. An athlete without proper micronutrient balance will struggle to run smoothly (no pun intended). Regardless of type, duration and intensity of training, the body demands more micronutrients when we are active. Minerals are lost in sweat; antioxidants are rapidly consumed to protect the body against oxidative stress and B-vitamins are depleted through revved up energy pathways. Without adequate micronutrient cofactors, you may see plateaued weight loss, quicker muscle fatigue, slower race times, decreased power and overall lower performance. Minimizing Oxidative Stress Physical activity, even for weekend warriors, generates oxidative stress. Maximizing antioxidant potential is key. Colorful fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes are the preferred source of antioxidants from the diet. Athletes

should consume three to five cups of multicolored fruits and vegetables daily, aiming for at least two cups of dark leafy vegetables per day. The wider the variety and color spectrum, the more antioxidants. Studies have found that antioxidants not only protect the athlete from oxidative stress but positively influence mineral metabolism. Men who took 300mg of vitamin E daily maintained higher levels of chromium, manganese, copper, zinc and calcium after training than a similar but unsupplemented group. Other antioxidants that may prevent damage to the cells are vitamin C and cysteine. Immunity and Bone Health Glutamine is a general indicator of overall immune status. It is synthesized in skeletal muscle and moderate exercise is associated with improved glutamine function. However, exhaustive training programs induce glutamine deficiency, resulting in decreased immunity. Weight-bearing exercise and adequate vitamin D promotes bone growth, and research has revealed vitamin D plays a major role in immunity. Healthy vitamin D status is essential for athletes and all those atrisk for osteoporosis (postmenopausal, white females especially). In North Idaho where the sun does not always grace us with its presence, 2,000iu of vitamin D is an appropriate “winter maintenance” dose. Cellular Energy Inside every cell in our body there is an “energy powerhouse” known as the mitochondria. Its primary function is to generate energy. The more exercise you endure, the more “powerhouses” your cells develop and the more energy (and micronutrient cofactors)

you need to fuel those powerhouses. Nutrients like carnitine, lipoic acid and coenzyme Q10 are critical cofactors specific to mitochondrial function while many B-vitamins – biotin, B1, B2, B3 and B6 – directly impact energy pathways in the mitochondria. Vitamin E protects our energy “currency”, ATP, while vitamin A maintains cellular equilibrium when energy production ramps up. Bonus: when there are adequate cofactors to fuel our mitochondria, like vitamin C and carnitine, there is less muscle soreness and tissue damage from by-products that have “backed-up” in the muscle tissue.
Individualized Nutrition
P
Micronutrients work synergistically, the status of one affects the function of another, so it is not recommended to simply supplement the above-mentioned nutrients without proper medical supervision. Those most suited to make supplementation recommendations are physicians, naturopaths, dietitians and physical therapists or chiropractors who work specifically with the athlete population. Southwest Montana
Where it all comes together By Colin Anderson
C
owboys, college kids, the ultra-wealthy, and the family caravan; all characters you’re likely to see on a visit to Bozeman, Montana. Originally a small ranching community, Bozeman continues to evolve and is now the central hub for visitors to Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky Resort and an expanding Montana State University. The combination of youth and retirees, city and country dwellers, and longtime residents alongside vacation homeowners has created a diverse destination rarely seen today. A stroll down Main will show you saloons that have stood for decades along with shops featuring upscale clothing and art. You’ll bump into wranglers and Stetsons, engineering students letting off steam, and travelers looking to flee their big city life for a week or so. The reason for each visit varies, but it’s easy to see how Bozeman’s tourism industry continues to grow and adapt to an ever increasing visitor population. Western Montana in general boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery and incredible outdoor experiences in the lower 48. Bozeman serves as home base for many planning to spend their trip in the great outdoors. Evidenced by the numerous fly shops that dot the town, trout fishing is a huge draw here. The Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone rivers all carry the blue ribbon designation for their water quality, public accessibility, native trout population and ability to handle fishing pressure. Serious anglers from all over the country put a float down one of these Montana legends as a fly fishing bucket list can’t miss. Very fortunate fishermen can land one of only a few yearly permits for a five-day float down the Smith River. During the 60-mile float, it’s rare to see another outfit giving visitors a truly alone-in-the-wild experience. Yellowstone National Park sits just 90 miles south of town and guests can enter the north end of the park through Gardner or the west entrance at West Yellowstone. Easily one of the most visited and popular National Parks in the country, a trip into Yellowstone will bring you up close and personal with wildlife, geothermal wonders, as well as spectacular bodies of water and mountain peaks. Yellowstone is one of the best places in the country to see the most famous animals of the West. Entering through Gardner, you are all but guaranteed to see herds of elk and some of the last native buffalo left in the West. While they may look like calm massive cows, every year overzealous picture takers get mauled by bison who feel threatened when people get too close. Don’t be that person. These 1,000-pound animals will often block the roadway, and provoking them or honking your horn does little to sway them into moving out of your way. Nature makes the rules and runs the show here.
CDALivingLocal.com
64
Another common occurrence in the park is a traffic build up also known as a “bear jam.” Grizzly and black bears are often spotted right from the road, and as soon as they are seen, cars pull over and stack up to get a glimpse. This causes a headache for park staff, but the chance to see a grizzly in the wild is too much for most visitors to pass up and drive by. There is an average of one bear attack each year in the park, and most of those occur where visitors are out hiking and surprise a bear. Before going out on trips, park staff educates hikers on how to avoid surprising a bear and what to do if charged. Your odds of being attacked are extremely low, but having the knowledge of what to do beforehand could make all the difference. Across miles of hiking trails there are deer, moose, eagles, as well as the rarely seen bobcat, mountain lion and wolf pack. The other feature many visitors come to see is the majority of active geysers in the world. Old Faithful is the most popular, but many are surprised to learn that it does not erupt exactly every 60 minutes and isn’t even the most frequent erupting or largest geyser in the park; it is however the most consistent. There are more than 300 erupting geysers in Yellowstone making it the largest concentration in the world. If you can’t wait until your trip, the National Park Service has a constant live stream where you can watch the Old Faithful eruption (www.nps.gov/features/ yell/webcam/oldFaithfulStreaming.html). This is truly a spectacular place and a trip through the park should not be missed.

While summer brings outdoor hikers, bikers, fishermen and adventure seekers, winter brings visitors looking for light fluffy powder, steep terrain and an incredible ski experience. Locals take the 30-minute drive to Bridger Bowl ski area, famous for soft snow as well as some of the most challenging terrain around. Back country skiers hike to the very top for untouched powder and the thrill of leaping off cliffs and ledges. There are also miles of cross-country skiing as well as snowshoeing trails. The more famous mountain, Big Sky, sits about an hour south of Bozeman and boasts one of the largest skiable mountains in North America. This is a true western resort experience with dozens of dining and on-mountain lodging options. The gathering area seems more like a small downtown than a ski chalet. It would be a challenge to hit every run if you had a week, and if you aren’t a big fan of chairlifts, there is a

run that’s six miles long that will take you plenty of time to traverse. Multi-million dollar homes are common throughout the area. Plans were laid to create a private ski mountain called The Yellowstone Club that encompassed nearby Moonlight Basin. However, the dream didn’t come to fruition and in 2013, Moonlight became part of Big Sky Resort, creating over 7,600 acres of skiable terrain. If a more laid back stay is your style, there are plenty of options back in Bozeman, and the town is easy to navigate on foot. During the summer months, the downtown area puts on weekly art walks featuring the local galleries as well as ”Music on Main” which features live local bands, activities for kids, and plenty of food trucks serving up a variety of specialties. Pride from Montana State University shuts down Main Street in both the spring and fall for graduating senior sendoffs and fall homecoming parades and pep rallies. The annual Brawl of the Wild football game pits the Bobcats of Montana State against the Grizzlies of the University of Montana. It’s been going on since 1897, and it’s easy to tell which side you’re on during Cat-Griz week. A melting pot of Old West and modern is what you’ll find on your visit to the greater Bozeman area. Luxurious options abound alongside beat up farm trucks. A passion for the outdoors is what drives visitors here and keeps locals from ever leaving the area. Big Sky country is a term not easily described until you’ve experienced it firsthand. Western Montana is the playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Even if you’re not the mountaineering type, you can experience all the beauty of this region through the window of your car or a short stroll off the beaten path.
