Subtle updates make for an easy refresh
As the days continue to get longer and the temperatures slowly warmer, our urge to spend more time outside grows as well. Spring is a time of renewal, and for many that often includes decluttering, organizing and freshening up our homes both inside and out. We have a few precious months to spend outside before the bite of fall hits again. It’s paramount to enjoy these long warm days, and there are several small improvements you can do both indoors and out to make this summer even more enjoyable.
While yard work isn’t the top priority of most homeowners, simplifying your landscaping will help limit the amount of time you spend weeding, raking, and hauling lawn debris away in the future. Communities all across the West are asking residents to conserve water. Droughts in the Southwest have strained watersheds, and though the Northwest isn’t suffering the same shortages, water conservation is still top of mind. Keeping a lawn and landscape green can take a tremendous amount of water, especially in between rainstorms. Replacing your landscaping with droughtresistant plants and grasses not only decreases your water use, but lowers your water

bill and, in some cases, can even qualify you for a regional tax incentive.
There are many kinds of plants, tall and short decorative grasses, as well as herbs and ground cover that require much less water to thrive. When planting, keep things close together to help shade the soil and protect the moisture barrier. Also, be sure to cover the soil with porous rocks, or mulch. Professional gardeners and landscapers in your area will also be familiar with native plants to specific regions and can offer more detailed recommendations.
If you want to rid yourself of mowing entirely, you might consider artificial turf. Materials have come a long way since the spongy bright green surfaces we most associate with baseball and soccer fields. Today’s turf is tailored to many situations depending on use; everything from durable high traffic to kids/pets, to decorative gardens. There are three main materials used: nylon, which feels most like natural grass but is not as durable; polypropylene, which is highly durable but does not have the same natural look as nylon; or polyethylene, which has a more natural look and is easier for pet clean-up and light usage. While more expensive than sod, the

way. Vertical tool racks are also an easy way to keep your rakes, shovels and brooms upright, taking up as little space as possible. You’ll be amazed at how much space you’ll save by putting in a wall-mounted bike rack, and the tried-and-true peg board is an easy place to store and see small tools. Finally, tuck away kid toys, decorations, seasonal goods, camping equipment, etc. in large plastic tubs and place them on your shelving. Just be sure to label each.
While an entire home exterior paint job might be out of the budget, a few simple upgrades can also freshen up your home’s curbside appearance. Start with a new mailbox, something that speaks to your personality. Next, try updating your address numbers to something more modern. While you are at it, paint or stain the front door. Finally, take your porch or garage lights to the next level with LED lighting, which can change colors dependent on your mood or the season with a simple swipe of your phone.
While there is seemingly always some improvement we can make to our living spaces, summer is not the time to get bogged down with a month’s long project. Give your home a small refresh this spring, and you’ll be ready for an even more enjoyable summer.

Top tips to declutter and freshen up your space
Spring is here, and it’s time to open up the windows, and let in that fresh air! Which will, no doubt, invigorate you with new springy energy. All that nonsense of snuggling up in the oversized chair, next to the fire, under a pile of your favorite books, is over. It’s time to put on a pair of shoes (with socks), brush your hair and shake off the winter sluggishness. All your winter blues are forgotten upon the arrival of sweet sunshine. No doubt this new attitude will inspire a general tidying of winter’s clutter—clutter that has grown into a much larger pile than you thought. It makes sense that you might have to store heavy blankets on higher shelves, or bag up your winter sweaters, but when oh when did you get comfortable just grabbing clean clothes unfolded directly from the couch? Here are six tips to get you started on your cleaning frenzy right!

Create Space.
This is easier said than done, but every home has unused space. It just takes a little creativity to unlock it. Look around your home and notice the blank spaces: the walls, the windowsills or the ceiling are great starts. For example, in the kitchen, pots and pans are easily hung from the ceiling and look especially lovely over an island. Little corner nooks can hold corner shelves, where a potted plant might fit just right. The point is to get things off the floor or counter, and up in the light.
Prioritize Action Items.
What within your house gets you moving and active? What gets your kids moving and active? Start by creatively fitting out those spaces for efficiency. One such example might be the door/entry area. The windowsills or walls can be outfitted with heavy duty hooks, each designated to a member of the household for all their bags, scarves, light jackets, etc. Another often busy space is the dinner table, which also doubles as the art and homework table. A rolling caddy full of art supplies, pencils and paper is a wonderful way to organize your table for activity.

Appreciate Meaningful Items.
It’s time to put things that are precious to you out into the light, so that your space reminds you of your happy experiences. However, all those small knickknacks, pictures, sentimental baby clothes and toys can’t just be laid out or they’ll catch dust. Consider framing items that you really appreciate. Another useful idea for organizing meaningful items that rotate (think of all those cute pictures your children draw) is to pull a string across a wall and clothespin items along the line. A drawer or an attic is hardly the place for things that remind you of your most precious memories.
Organize According to Use.
Any one space, corner, closet or shelf has a purpose, and everything has its place. A home is functional as much as it is livable. For example: Make cleaning easier by putting regularly used cleaning supplies in a grab-and-go caddy. The caddy can be pulled (or carried) in and out of wherever you put it, easily cleaned and emptied, and is easily brought from one room to the next. This tip is also useful in the kitchen, which can easily be divided into sections with items stored according to use (baking, stovetop, beverage, etc.).

Beautify Your Clutter Spaces.
This doesn’t mean get rid of them. Or even clean them out. Every house has spots where stuff just collects. Instead of shunning those spaces by closing them up, embrace them as necessary. The junk drawer can be beautified by separating necessary household items into various small baskets (batteries in one basket, sharpies in the other). The basket method can also be used to catch stuff in various clutter corners, to be cleaned out and put away when you have the time.
Declutter Sustainably.
Start by thinking of some simple rules to follow to ensure that your house stays less cluttered throughout the flurry of spring and summer activity. The “eight-minute rule” is one such example. The rule is simple: For longer chores that require dedicated time, set a timer for eight minutes. At the end of eight minutes, you may not be done with all the window washing or dusting, but you will have put a real dent in what may need to be done over the weekend.
Following some, or all, of these tips will help make next year’s spring cleaning all that much easier!

A Season to
REMEMBER
Lake City High School basketball sets its sights high amidst a strong season
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
The Lake City High School boys’ varsity basketball team is having a season to remember. For the Timberwolves, their coach, and their community, it’s been an exciting season of wins, on and off the court.
“It has been a great year for us,” shares head coach Jim Winger. “As of January 27, we are 15-0. We have played a difficult schedule and have beat some quality teams.”
As of press time, the team remains undefeated through a series of challenging games. For the first time, the Lake City Boys basketball program ranked 25th nationally in the country by Maxpreps, they shared on their Facebook page.
“We beat Owyhee High School, who was the number one team in Idaho at the time,” he says. “We also beat Curtis High School in Tacoma, on their court. At the time, Curtis was number one in the state of Washington and ranked 40th in the nation.”
For Jim, the game in Tacoma was an exceptionally memorable one. “The moment of the season that stands out right now was our win at Curtis High School in Tacoma,” he says. “We beat them on their floor in the championship game of the tournament. It was a big confidence booster for sure.”
For Coach Winger and his team, the theme of the season has been confidence. “I believe our confidence in each other, and as individuals, is very noticeable,” he says. “We are also playing very hard. We have very good talent, but the guys are playing extremely hard.”
Amidst the team’s confidence, talent and dedication, a strong foundation of support has made all the difference for the Lake City basketball team. Support from the local community and fellow Lake City students has been noticeably strong this year, Jim says.

For Coach Winger and his team, the theme of the season has been confidence. “I believe our confidence in each other, and as individuals, is very noticeable.”
“The support we have received this year is the best we have had in the 29 years here at Lake City,” says Coach Winger. “Our students have always been supportive; however, this year, the support has been amazing. Our student section is packed at every game.”
Jim has also been impressed by the community’s noticeable support of the team through a season of wellattended games.
“The support from the community is also the best we have ever had here at Lake City High School,” he says. “I would guess we are averaging about 2,000 to 2,500 people in attendance per game. The community has been very good to us.”
As for the rest of the season, “Our team has very high goals,” he says. Lake City boys’ basketball has set its sights on finishing first in the league and taking the number one seed in districts.
“Obviously, we would love to get back to the state tournament,” he says. As of Friday, February 17, the team is ranked 21-0 and heading into the district playoffs.
Beyond the current season, several Timberwolves have plans set in motion to continue playing after they leave Lake City.
“We have four players heading to college on full scholarships: Blake Buchanan is heading to Virginia,

Kolten Mitchell is heading to Idaho State, Nathan Hocking is heading to Ottawa in Phoenix, and Zach Johnson will be playing football next year at the University of Idaho,” Jim shares.
No matter where the Lake City players are headed after this year, today, the support from their coach remains as strong as ever.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” Coach Winger says. “They are awesome to coach, but the best thing about this team is that they are the total package. They are great people that are fun to be around.”
From their success on the court to their behavior off the court, it’s no surprise Coach Winger calls his team an extremely hard-working group. “This team is a pleasure to travel with, as they are polite and always say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to people,” he says. Their hard work also extends into the classroom. “One of their best qualities is that they are very good students.”
Coach Winger has been with Lake City High School since its opening 29 years ago. “I have been the head coach for all of those years, except five of them,” he says, calling the experience “incredible.”
“It has been so rewarding,” Jim says of his time at Lake City. “I couldn’t imagine doing something else. I think Lake City is a special place, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it.”
As for this season, Coach Winger is determined for his team to take it as far as possible.
“This year has truly been remarkable,” he says. “We just need to finish the year as strong as we have been!”
With Coach Winger’s leadership and the support of the community behind them, the Timberwolves are to continue to do great things through this season and beyond.

Melody Lund is a second-grade teacher at Fernan STEM Academy, whose passion for her profession is undeniable. Praised as a “dynamic teacher” by her peers, Melody is known to create an engaging, inviting atmosphere for her students.
“I love their excitement for learning, the wonder in their eyes and the moments when their mind is ‘blown’ by a new concept finally understood,” she says. “I love teaching with a STEM focus, where students learn through hands-on learning and have a problem to solve.”
She values the relationships formed with her students, “as they are with me for a short window of their journey in education.”
Melody has been a teacher for 19 years and recalls the COVID pandemic as a standout experience in her career. “This was a powerful opportunity for all of us,” she says. “We had to be more than we were and step out of our comfort zone.”
She recalls teachers across the country sharing resources and encouraging each other unselfishly. “There was also an eagerness in students who just wanted to be back at school, learning and experiencing life with their friends and teachers. The support of parents, the community and fellow teachers was amazing!”
She also felt an enhanced appreciation for her community. “We always knew we lived in an amazing place, but the community support was extra special that year,” she says. “It was an awful time in our history, but also a beautiful time where mankind supported each other to better the lives of our children.”
Melody says parents and the general public might be surprised at how often teachers think about their students. “Teachers are passionate about kids and work hard to reach each individual student. They plan, brainstorm ideas, and often lose sleep thinking about their students.”
This dedication, she says, is often what inspires a career in education. “In general, teachers enter education because they care deeply for kids and want to make an impact for future generations.”
Even with nearly two decades of experience as a teacher, Melody has never stopped learning.
“A life lesson that I have learned, as a human being, is that we are all on a journey,” she says. “We have not arrived, and learning continues, as long as we live. I have learned to give myself and others a break and allow for imperfections. Those imperfections make us who we are and make us special.”

by TAYLOR SHILLAM
Coeur d’Alene High School senior Alyssa Randles has been ranked among the top girls’ wrestlers in the nation, and a top student among her peers. Alyssa balances her wrestling success from both boys’ and girls’ tournaments with a vigorous academic load and continues to push herself physically and mentally.
“I’ve taken AP and dual-enrollment classes all four years of high school, receiving As and Bs,” Alyssa says. “I’ve wrestled boys varsity for four years and am currently ranked fourth in the nation for females in my weight class.”
Sharing the sport with her siblings and father, the last name Randles is not unfamiliar to wrestling in the state of Idaho; however, Alyssa’s made a name all her own. For Alyssa, wrestling has been “empowering” and has taught her valuable lessons regarding her mentality and perspective.
“I’ve learned how important perspective is,” she says. “The situation or place you’re in is never under your control, but your ability to
find optimism in the situation is what makes you successful.”
She goes on to share, “One of my biggest challenges was switching my mindset when wrestling boys in the school season. My main focus is my national-level freestyle season, and I use my boys’ season as an opportunity to get better and prepare for that.”
Alyssa recalls the earliest challenges she faced as a wrestler for Coeur d’Alene High School, and what it took to overcome them. “My freshman year, I struggled with getting caught up in winning and losing in a position where I’m meant to fail. I’ve learned that to be the most competitive and enjoy what I’m doing, I had to let go of winning and losing.”
Even with a meaningful mindset shift, Alyssa is no stranger to wins. “I’ll be going for my fourth state title this month,” she shares.
As for what lies ahead beyond her high school career, Alyssa plans to commit in the spring to continue her athletic and academic career. “I plan to study political science and later go into immigration law,” she says. She plans to attend law school after earning her four-year degree.
Alyssa also plans to continue wrestling, embracing both sides of her sport. “I enjoy every painful and successful moment of it,” she says.
“I enjoy the way my sport empowers me. It has given me a purpose and made me into a person that I trust can be successful, even once my wrestling career is over.”

Lake City senior Zach Johnson is 18 years old and holds an impressive streak of athletic and academic success.
“I was the league defense MVP last season for football as well as being a two-time All-State player the last two years,” Zach says. “I’ve won three district championships for basketball while in high school, and I currently play on the 25th-ranked team in the country for high school basketball.”
During last year’s track season, he was the district champion for the 200-meter dash and a district champion for both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. He competed at a state level in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, and the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
“Throughout all four years of high school, I’ll have received a varsity letter 12 times (four letters for three sports),” Zach says. “I am a 4.0 student athlete with an academic letter as well.”
Along the way, Zach has developed a strong sense of ownership, on and off the field.
“One very important lesson I’ve learned from sports that applies to all aspects of life is that everything that happens to you on the court or field, good or bad, is your fault,” he says. “When I started to realize this, it helped me to take preparation, workouts, practices, and even school to a new level in so many ways. It added another level of seriousness to what I’m trying to accomplish.”
His dedication has remained strong, even through setbacks.
“The biggest challenge I faced in sports was injuring my knee my sophomore year. It caused me to miss that summer of practices and workouts—which is the time for high schoolers that the most progress is made during training and practicing,” Zach shares.
“To have to sit out was pretty difficult; not to mention it set me back in progressing toward being a better athlete and football player.”
Upon graduation, Zach plans to continue his education and his football career at the University of Idaho. He hopes to remain close to sports with a major in pre-physical therapy.
He chose this field “mostly because I can still be around sports to some extent after I get done playing with the job opportunities the degree presents,” he says.
Today, Zach’s favorite aspect of football is the opportunity to compete. “Taking all the days and weeks of practice and training, and putting it into a game that only lasts a couple of hours, is the ultimate opportunity to compete at a high level against whoever it is you’re playing. That’s why I enjoy it.”

‘THINK BIG’
A weekend of inspiration: learn about the future from the people creating it
44 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023
The Think Big Festival—which brings the community together to learn about the future and what’s possible— returns to downtown Coeur d’Alene this April. Showcasing and celebrating local entrepreneurs and creators who are building remarkable products, companies and technology—right here in our area—the event aims “to inspire the community to think bigger, dream about how they might help change the world, and showcase those who are writing better stories for their lives,” shares Kirsten Rowley, community lead for the Innovation Collective Coeur d’Alene, which puts on the event.
This weekend-long festival features activities for the public, speaking panels with guests from leading tech companies and change-making startups, and a street fair with vendors, inventors, tech displays and other businesses as a chance for the town to show off what they’re doing and creating.
“We’ve seen crowds of over 500 participants, and we expect it to be as big—if not bigger—for 2023,” says Kirsten. “We would love to see even more people there in celebration and support of our wildly creative community.”
Spanning a variety of different activities and events for the community to experience and attend, it all begins Thursday, April 13, with the Sunset Reception, a cocktail party to allow Innovation Collective members and their guests to meet new like-minded people and kick off the fun. Next is the VIP Think Tank on Friday, April 14, where big thinkers and doers in town are solving problems
in robotics and AI. Later that evening, there’s the Tech Carnival street fair to showcase local entrepreneurs and creators, along with their products and inventions, for the community to interact with and experience. (Those with displays that are interactive, innovative, and original creations can apply to be a part of the Tech Carnival by emailing kirsten@innovationcollective.co.) This street fair will also have food vendors (such as The Village Bakery, the Burger Dock, Rivaura Winery, My Sushi Sensei, and High Society Brewing Company), local education institutions, nonprofit organizations, and a wide variety of startups ranging from industries such as virtual and augmented reality, robotics, AI, cybersecurity, app development, and so much more! There is sure to be something interesting for everyone, and all ages are welcome for the Tech Carnival, which is free for the whole community.
On Saturday, April 15, there’s the Speaking Series (tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite for $45) with a panel of industry leaders, venture capitalists, founders, CEOs and others discussing their insights about the future. In past years, guest speakers have included people from companies like Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, Google, Airbnb, Johns Hopkins, Mayfield, and more! This year’s lineup of industry leaders, though yet to be released as of press time, is sure to be just as impressive.
“Afterward, we award one person or company with the ‘Rutan Confidence in Nonsense Award,’ which recognizes who has the craziest big idea in town that is now viable and growing,” smiles Kirsten.

The Think Big Festival will conclude on Saturday evening following the Speaking Series and Confidence in Nonsense Award ceremony with a community party. The details and location of the party will be shared throughout the other portions of the weekend’s festivities, so make sure to be there and stay tuned!
“We encourage people to attend the Think Big Festival because there is so much talent and innovation right here in our own community that so many of us probably didn’t even know existed, and we want to blow your mind and allow you to come together and think bigger about what’s possible!” shares Kirsten. “This event is for everyone— entrepreneurs, creators, employees, side-hustlers, mad scientists, parents, students, teachers, families, nerds, curious humans, those who want to live a better tomorrow and build a stronger community … truly anyone!”
Don’t miss the chance to experience the Think Big Festival on April 13 through 15. If you would like a copy of the full weekend agenda or are interested in VIP opportunities for cocktail receptions or Think Tanks, please reach out to kirsten@innovationcollective.co.
“We [the Innovation Collective] believe that society and systems today are directly challenging the true human condition and what all people really want—which is to live a life of beauty and value, with purpose and passion, where they can get their hands dirty and build things they love and bring them into the world,” affirms Kirsten. “Figure out who you really want to be and find a tribe that can help you become that person, and go create the life you dream of by doing the work. We are here to help you with an entire ecosystem that can make it happen!”
For those interested in becoming an Innovation Collective member, you can find more information by visiting InnovationCollective.co. Their transformative events, held throughout the year, include Fireside Chat, Coffee and Concepts, and Story Summit, all offering the support, space and time to help you bring your big idea to life.
Coeur d’Alene’s Innovation Collective is located at 418 East Lakeside Avenue in downtown Coeur d’Alene. Follow the Think Big Festival event page on Facebook or email Kirsten to stay up to date with all the details of where each portion of the festival will take place, as different parts will be in different locations throughout the downtown area.

RAISE FUNDS FOR ANNA’S HOMES
Anna Schindler Foundation is ‘building hope’ at their April 22 gala
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
marks the fourth year of the Anna Schindler Foundation’s Anna’s Homes Gala. “After taking two years off for this event due to COVID restrictions, we are excited to host this event again!” shares Polly Schindler, co-founder of the Anna Schindler Foundation.
Anna’s Homes Gala: Building Hope is scheduled for Saturday, April 22, with doors opening at 5:30pm. Tickets are on sale now at AnnaSchindlerFoundation.org, and the foundation anticipates 300 attendees (must be 21 or older) coming out to the Davenport Grand Hotel in Spokane to show their support.
The Anna’s Homes Gala promises to be an elegant and fun evening featuring live music, a silent and live auction, raffles, delicious menu, and a missionbased program. “It is our intent to educate our attendees about childhood cancer and how families are affected, inspiring philanthropy to lighten the burden for childhood cancer families in our region,” affirms Polly.
The Anna’s Homes Gala: Building Hope launches the foundation’s capital campaign for Phase II of Anna’s Homes—which consists of four new townhomes. Groundbreaking is anticipated for late spring or early summer of this year, and Polly shares that they hope to have the townhomes available to house families by the fall of 2024. These homes will offer all the comforts of home in private single-family units with each unit consisting of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen and living area, as well laundry— all built with childhood cancer families in mind.

“From stocked pantries, clean linens, and space to get outside and play, Anna’s Homes are a home away from home for families going through intensive cancer treatments. Most importantly, families can stay together throughout treatment at no cost to them,” says Polly.
“Our first set of homes are in constant use, with an ongoing waiting list. While families wait for more space at Anna’s Homes, they are required to live in costly hotels, or vacation rentals, community living spaces, etc. for weeks to months at a time. The generosity of the guests at the Anna’s Homes Gala will allow for timely construction of the next set of homes to reduce the number of families separated during treatment, relieve the financial strain of long-term stays, and provide a safe and comfortable lifestyle during a tumultuous time.”
As of press time, auction items were already starting to roll in, according to Polly. “At this time, we are excited to feature a luxury Hawaii trip and roundtrip airfare to anywhere in the US for two. Our silent auction has tables full of spa, pet, wine baskets, restaurant dates and experiences.”
Polly reminds us that the Anna’s Homes Gala allows our community to come together to make a huge impact on childhood cancer families in the Inland Northwest for decades to come. “You will laugh, cry, and your heart full in attending this event,” she insists.
“Thank you for uplifting childhood cancer families during some of their darkest hours. We couldn’t do what we do without our generous supporters! Please join us for this amazing evening and help us make a difference.”

Business is Booming for Croc Coatings!
Local business transforming homes and businesses in North Idaho and Spokane
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Inspired by the beauty of North Idaho, the abundance of outdoor opportunities and the friendly people, Jim and Kelley Hobart made the decision to begin a new chapter of their life in Hayden, Idaho, where they’ve enjoyed every minute of the last decade.
The couple, who have been married for more than 36 years, have a true appreciation for things that last. They moved into their custom home in 2010. Everything was more beautiful than they had imagined it could be, except the epoxy flooring in the garage. Only a few years old, it had faded, chipped and peeled up in the areas where they parked their cars. “I looked for solutions and was told I would need to have it professionally ground off, and then they would re-apply a new epoxy floor,” recalls Jim. “I didn’t want to repeat using epoxy only to get the same results a few years later.”
He and Kelley discovered the Penntek flooring system while visiting a relative—who raved about it! Jim decided to reach out to the manufacturer and discovered that no one was offering their flooring system in North Idaho or Spokane. This inspired the Hobarts to change that. They introduced Croc Coatings in 2020, bringing this revolutionary flooring system to the area so that others could have a new choice with premium flooring solutions. The response has been incredible! They have installed more than 665 floors in the past two years, which amounts to 516,741 square feet of floor space! They have added a fifth truck, trailer and van this month and now have 21 Croc Crew team members!
“We started the business with a mission to provide extraordinary floors and service and have grown as a result of delivering on this promise,” affirms Jim. “However, it’s not all about growth; it’s about serving a true need and delivering exceptional service to our customers.” Most of their growth has been through word-of-mouth referrals, and Croc Coatings is now the largest provider of concrete coatings in both North Idaho and Spokane.
“It means everything to us to have such a wonderful community, and we are deeply grateful to you all. Without your support, none of this would have been possible,” affirm Jim and Kelley.
In the past, people only had a handful of options when it came to protecting concrete flooring like garages, patios and basements. “Our products allow you to have a flooring system that is durable, beautiful and lasts for years, plus it comes with a lifetime warranty against fading and discoloration, so it is perfect for outdoor areas,” shares Jim. “It’s one of the best home or business improvement projects ever! It’s done in one day, and you don’t have to do it!”
Their industrial coatings are also ideal for commercial use. Croc Coatings has replaced old epoxy floors with their system at car dealerships like Spokane Hyundai, distilleries like Young Living, restaurants like Capone’s, and local shops like Custom Truck and Mountain Soap Company on Sherman Avenue.
From the day it was founded, Croc Coatings has had one simple goal: to provide the most durable and long-lasting floor coating products for homes and businesses and to install them with exceptional customer service. “As exclusive dealers and installers in the area, we’re blessed to

be able to bring this premium revolutionary new product, which is four-times stronger than epoxy and offers a 15-year manufacturer’s warranty, to North Idaho and Spokane,” affirms Jim.
They employ certified installers who are proud of every floor they install for their local customers. “We have a fantastic team that cares about our customers and provides an exceptional experience every step along the way,” Jim says proudly.
Jim and Kelley are grateful to the community they have called home for more than a decade. “We love being part of this community and helping make it a better place to live,” the couple shares. They recently worked with North Idaho Christian School to add Croc floors to their multi-purpose room, and they provided a free garage floor to a member of the community who performed an exceptional community service. The Hobarts also sponsor various golf tournaments and other charities throughout the year.
With spring soon to make its arrival, durable and easy-to-clean Croc floors are a great solution for your garage, basement or outdoor patio and walkways.
Let Croc Coatings assist you with innovative new options for your floors. Their design consultants are available to understand your needs and get you a free project quote guaranteed for 30 days.

HOME DESIGN TRENDS Nod to Nature
WELCOMING HOME DESIGN TRENDS THAT MIX THE OLD AND NEW WITH THE BEAUTY AND WARMTH OF NATURAL MATERIALS AND BOLD
OPTIMISTIC COLORS by
ALLISON POLLOCK-PUGH
54
Each spring, new flower buds emerge from the long-dormant earth, basking the world in color and sparking feelings of renewal, change and fresh starts. Spring is nature’s gentle way of shaking us awake after a period of hibernation—inspiring and energizing us with longer days and more sunlight. While some opt for traditional spring cleaning, others embrace the nudge offered by the season change and choose to rejuvenate their living spaces.
The prospect of design updates often brings visions of the family and friends you’ll host and the memories you’ll make in your new space. As you start researching design trends, it’s easy to get lost down the neverending Pinterest rabbit hole. The countless options and opinions can quickly become overwhelming, causing major decision paralysis. You want your space to feel like it belongs in this decade (or century), but trends can be fleeting, and any significant changes need to withstand the test of time.
Your home is a personal space—it should be a calm and comforting place that considers your lifestyle and reflects what you like. Connecting with the earth and bringing a feeling of groundedness into your home is reflected in the home design trends this year. People are seeking stability and peace within their homes, reaching for warm neutrals with pops of rich colors, natural materials and versatile pieces that make you feel safe, comfortable and inspired.
A place we often start when considering a home redesign is colors—and not just paint. Wallpaper with bold patterns and textures add visual interest to a myriad of surfaces throughout the house. Colors affect our mood, emotions and energy level, making them an important factor in aesthetic and overall vibe.
While neutrals have a timeless appeal, people are ditching the cool white and gray colors for creamy earth tones that give off a homey feeling and warmer brown shades that anchor the space and make us feel more grounded. Sherwin Williams’ announced their color of the year as Redend Point (SW 9081)), a romantic warm neutral that embodies all things cozy and tranquil.
55
The prospect of design updates often brings visions of the family and friends you ’ll host and the memories you ’ll make in your new space.
MOSSY AND DEEP SHADES OF GREEN ARE ALMOST CONSIDERED NEUTRAL FOR THEIR VERSATILITY.
Paired with creamier neutrals are bold colors that elicit a desired emotion from the space. Soothing greens, deep blues and rich berry hues are taking center stage in 2023. Benjamin Moore chose a vibrant red-orange called Raspberry Blush (2008-30) as their color of the year for 2023—this bold and refreshing hue energizes a room for maximum impact. Mossy and deep shades of green are almost considered neutral for their versatility—used to upgrade furniture and décor or make a bold wall color while balancing a room.
Bringing natural elements into your home means embracing the inconsistencies, imperfections and unique beauty in raw, natural materials. Cookie-cutter design pieces from big-box stores made from synthetic materials are being replaced with a newfound (or renewed) appreciation for durable, long-lasting organic materials. Meaningfully investing in a few masterfully crafted pieces built for longevity is being more highly valued as people want a story or connection to the items they keep in their homes.
One of the most beautiful and often underappreciated design materials is front and center: natural wood. Furniture and design elements crafted from light- or mid-toned woods that lovingly embrace the natural artistry of high-contrast grains add warmth and texture to a room. Think 1960’s and 1970’s rich mahogany end tables or dark oak shelving. Even natural wood cabinets are making a comeback, mingling with natural stone to create a mixed material kitchen. Integrate other wood touches with wooden-legged chairs, swap out picture frames for wood versions, or display that one-of-a-kind wood carving you found in your grandma’s basement.

YOUR HOME SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE
The desire to feel more grounded and connected with the earth means a shift from sterile white kitchens to natural materials, whimsical colors, patterns and textures. Natural stone slabs for kitchen countertops and backsplashes paired with dynamic colored cabinets and warm wood accents are inviting and functional to an area where families often congregate. While quartz remains a more economical choice, colorful marbles, soapstone and limestone with exaggerated, contrasting veining will become more prominent.
Not looking to do a complete overhaul? Swapping out your backsplash, painting your island a vibrant hue, or even installing a warm walnut butcher-block island makes a huge difference and doesn’t require construction.
After all the change and chaos of the past several years, there’s a general desire to reconnect with the things that really matter. Mixing vintage pieces into your contemporary space elicits a sense of nostalgic comfort and further personalizes your space. Adding meaningful objects such as heirloom pieces or sentimental items add character and depth to the space. Who doesn’t love a story about the antique table your great uncle brought all the way from Armenia? Pieces like these are part of your story and bring a sense of history into your home.
Even if you don’t have familial heirloom items, you can create the
look by thoughtfully picking out individual pieces that you love. Peruse an antique store for treasures, and refurbish them to make them your own. Or display unique trinkets, vases or sculptures found while traveling. Vintage furniture, heirloom accessories and one-of-a-kind, personalized pieces mix beautifully with modern styles and are more sustainable than short-term, disposable items. Combining antiques with a new, modern design can spark beloved memories while honoring a bygone era and adding timeless elegance to your space.
The architectural design and environment surrounding your home can also help inspire your design. A French country interior can feel out of place in a modern contemporary home, and a mid-century modern style can feel conflicted in a coastal beach house. Additionally, homes with ample shade from surrounding evergreen trees may select light-reflecting colors to brighten the interior. A home basking in warm, golden sunlight may need cool colors to balance the bright warmth.
While these home design trends are things to consider, they shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Your home should be a place where you feel relaxed and content; somewhere that reflects who you are and what you love.

‘MAKE IT MATTER’
The Inland Northwest’s award-winning architecture and design firm ready to partner with you to realize your dream

Josh Hissong and Armando Hurtado are leading the way in architecture and design— not only across the Inland Northwest but the country.
The founders of HDG architecture + design—a full-service architecture and design firm specializing in commercial, residential, hospitality and mixed-use multifamily architecture—Josh, LEED Green-Associate, AIA and Armando, AIA, NCARB have created a relaxed culture to provide their clients a sense of ease and enjoyment when discussing their hopes, dreams and aspirations, and while embarking on the journey, for what may be one of the biggest financial decisions they will make in their life.
Josh was fortunate to grow up in Coeur d’Alene. Though he moved away as a young adult, he returned to grow in the place he knew so well. He was inspired to pursue the design field 20 years ago after purchasing a loft—when he quickly realized the cost of design did not align with his initial budget. So, he bought the software, taught himself, and soon discovered he had an uncanny eye for design. Fast forward seven years to 2010, and Josh founded HDG.
Armando attended the New School of Architecture in San Diego, pursuing the industry because of his innate ability to see the inefficiencies in the spaces that we live, work and play. After finding out he and his wife were expecting their first child, the couple began longing for a slower
pace of life. After traveling the country for three months, they discovered Coeur d’Alene during ArtFest and knew “it was the obvious choice.”
He would start his own firm the same year Josh launched HDG. After Armando and Josh collaborated on a few projects, they soon realized that “two heads are better than one,” and HDG was solidified as a partnership in 2011.
“Growing up in North Idaho and San Diego respectively, we have a varied outlook on design, which is actually very beneficial for our clients,” affirms Josh. “With backgrounds in design and business, we look at clients’ projects through multiple lenses.” This truly sets HDG apart.
When it comes to what the pair finds most rewarding about the work they do, it is “the excitement of the client and the emotions that come with building them something shiny and new,” shares Josh. “We are lucky enough to be in the business of creating spaces that people live in, spaces where people work and play, so we can impact other people’s lives in a positive way, every day. That just feels dope.”

Gardening for your health
Garden Grow?
by RACHEL KELLY
63
Gardening is an investment in your well-being. Vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, orchards or trees … whatever is planted well will thrive. And if it thrives, you thrive. The benefits of gardening are numerous: from an increased sense of wellness to healthy levels of vitamin D. The effort of gardening counts as exercise and the product of gardening often leads to an interest in eating healthier. No doubt about it, when you get outside to plant, you harvest health. Also, planting a garden is just beautiful. The scent of the apple blossoms carried on the wind acts as aromatherapy. The sight of green growing things encourages life under the ground and above it, from worms to bees and butterflies. It’s no wonder why we flock to forests, lakes and outdoor spaces at all times of the year. Gardening makes those outdoor spaces accessible just outside our door. Here are a few ways your garden can promote your everyday health.
First, ask yourself, “How does my garden grow?” Yes, it’s a children’s nursery rhyme, but it’s also a good rule of thumb when planning out your garden. You want the health benefits of your garden to last throughout the year, so it’s important to consider which plants will bring you the most joy. If you want the garden to benefit you every day, year-around, you have to plant a garden that you find sustainable. For some this means planting plants that seed themselves. Examples of such plants include potatoes,
onions, anything in the mint family, evergreens, and a huge variety of flowers. Self-seeding plants require very little tilling and maintenance, and practically thrive on their own.
Some gardens are made up of well-organized “weeds” (by far the easiest sort of garden to grow), which are exceptionally hardy in addition to being self-seeding. When growing exceptionally boisterous plants, you might consider planting in pots or plots. Examples include anything in the dandelion family, mints, many herbs, clover, sunchokes, and different grasses. Many of the herbs and berries harvested for health benefits in the forests and fields are considered “weeds.”
Another very practical approach to gardening for your health means planting things that you enjoy eating, perhaps things that you don’t always find fresh in the grocery store. There’s no reason to become completely reliant upon your garden, although it is nice to peruse the garden for dinner rather than take a trip to the grocery store. However, the more vegetables and fruits you plant, the more you will find yourself branching out and enjoying things that you didn’t know you liked. This often has to do with the very real taste difference between fresh garden produce and grocery store finds: Fresh is just better.

Investing in a garden is investing in your home and your health.
A vegetable garden is accessible, and it opens up doors to produce and delicious foods that we might have not previously had. This encourages us to make healthier choices. An example would be the tomato. It’s relatively easy to grow (make sure you plant the roots deep), and its fruit is extremely abundant. When harvest time comes, you will have basket after basket of tomatoes that are good enough to eat plain, no adornment necessary. The excess can be turned into sauce or salsa to be enjoyed all year. Another example is the sugar snap pea, which during the spring months is so abundant that you could gather a basket daily from five plants. It’s also delicious without any adornment or seasoning and full of protein, making them a favorite for children on the go. Abundance will spawn creativity, and before you know it your plate is full of nutrientdense goodies. The more you have, the more you consume. When talking about produce, this is a great thing!
Aside from gardening sustainably, and gardening for food, the garden can also be a place of mental health. Many of the benefits that you go out of your way to enjoy, and actively spend money on, can be achieved simply through the garden. The garden can be a place of privacy and rest, much like a mini
retreat. For this reason, you might want to plant according to season, with something to enjoy in spring, summer, fall and winter. For example, tulips and crocus will pop up every year during spring, roses in summer and fall, and witch hazel in winter.
It’s not important that the garden always be “practical” to be a place of health. Growing a sense of well-being and safety is not to be scoffed at, as the state of our mind contributes considerably to our physical health. You might be inclined to plant roses for their scent, mint because of its relaxing smell in the bath, lavender because you like to cut the flowers for the dinner table, or dahlias for their burst of color. There are flowers that attract butterflies or hummingbirds, and plants that simply provide greenery. There are a variety of trees that do nothing for your plate but everything for lazy summer days in your hammock. Whatever the reason, investing in a garden is investing in your home and your health. And that is an investment worth making.

Q&A with NIC’s new director of theatre, Erick Wolfe by GERRY MCCRAY,
orth Idaho College director of theatre Erick Wolfe, made his way to Coeur d’Alene last summer after the former director of theatre, Joe Jacoby, was promoted to NIC’s division chair of communications and fine arts.
With one semester at NIC under his belt, the former head of theatre at Missouri Southern State University sat down to discuss his next production, “I Hate Hamlet,” his goals for the performance and more.
Performance dates for “I Hate Hamlet” are scheduled for April 13 through 15 and April 20 through 22 at Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center on NIC’s main campus in Coeur d’Alene. The performances are free and open to the public.
Responses have been edited for clarity and length.
Q. You’ve finished your first production at NIC with “The 39 Steps.” How did that go?
A. I think it went great. We had great audience participation and reaction. Good crowd sizes that grew every performance. I hope we can start there and just keep growing.
Q. What were some of your goals for that production?
A. Just to get it up on its feet. It was my first year here directing with students and a production team who didn’t know me, so I
think our goals were just to have fun with it, which we did.
Q. What is the Theatre Department’s upcoming production about?
A. “I Hate Hamlet” is a comedy about an actor that hates Shakespeare. He’s a soap opera star who moves to New York to do a production of “Hamlet,” mostly for his girlfriend and to be taken seriously as an actor.
During a séance, they bring out the ghost of John Barrymore, a Broadway actor who was famous for his role as Hamlet but also his drinking and womanizing, which he continues to do, but mostly he tries to mentor our main character to be a good actor.
Q. How do you pick a production, and what is the reasoning behind it?
A. A lot can go into that decision-making. You should always pick something that challenges the students, so they are pushed to the next level.
With the last production “The 39 Steps,” they hadn’t done much slapstick fast-paced comedy, so we picked that to try to push them. “I Hate Hamlet” deals with comedic elements while bringing it back to a more serious level.
For more information, visit NIC.edu/theatre or contact NIC Director of Theatre Erick Wolfe at erick.wolfe@nic.edu or 208.769.3220.

LOOK A POLISHED
What’s trendin g in nail art and which type of manicure is right f or you
by ALLISON POLLOCK-PUGH
As the days get longer and the sun pushes away the winter darkness, the world wakes up and brings out the colors of spring. This weather and nature shift is a sign that it’s time to refresh and retire our dark, moody manicures until next year.
Manicured nails are a great way to achieve a polished look while keeping your nails healthy and showing off your personality and style. Manicures let you experiment with colors and trends without the long-term commitment (like cutting bangs) or high price ($300 balayage, anyone?). But, with nail art trends going viral, and so many types of manicures, it can be overwhelming to keep up on what’s new and which option is right for you.
There are a few factors to consider when choosing your best manicure option. Think about your lifestyle, budget, current trends, upkeep, and how long you want the manicure to last. So, whether you like short minimalist nails or embellished gelnail extensions, we’re breaking down manicure basics and trends for the season.

Mani cure Types
The classic manicure shapes and uses traditional polish on natural nails. A gel manicure is the same process as the classic manicure, but a gel polish is used and cured under a UV light. For an acrylic manicure, a combination of liquid monomer and powder polymer is layered over the nail, then polished. For a dip powder manicure, a base coat is applied, and the nail is dipped into a pigmented powder and sealed with a top coat.
2ti me
Many factors contribute to the appointment duration and how long your manicure lasts, but here are some averages. The classic manicure takes about 30 minutes and lasts around seven days. A gel manicure takes about 30 minutes and lasts two to three weeks. Acrylic manicures take 45 minutes and last two to three weeks. Dip powder manicures take one hour and last up to four weeks. The time it takes for your manicure depends on the style, design, and nail technician. If you’re short on time, ask your nail technician for a time-estimate before getting started.

Sh apes
Long nails make a bold statement, but the short nail trend is growing—and people are opting for combination shapes that work for short to medium-length nails. Square and oval nails are considered classic shapes, but the “squoval” is taking over for the in-between look it offers. For people who want more space for design or embellishments but don’t want the full-stiletto point, almond-shaped nails are the go-to. Coffinshaped nails are another combo option on the rise, allowing for ample design space while merging the slant of the stiletto nail with the square tip.
col ors
The natural length and shape transfers over to colors with neutral and earth tones becoming more prominent. Although bare nails with a clear coat or glazed, pearly sheen embody the natural vibe, the color doesn’t have to be a light shade. From a “vanilla latte” color to burnt neutrals and grounding earth and gem tones, the colors can be vibrant and bold. With the 2023 Pantone color of the year announced as Viva Magenta, brighter colors found in nature add a little pizzazz.

Style Trends
Try different styles to shake up your manicure. Milky colors allow a slight shadow of your natural nail to be seen through the polish. Adding an accent nail of a different color or sheen adds fun detail. Top an opaque color with a subtle chrome layer to make your nails glossy and slightly iridescent. Try a French manicure with a twist—a barely there French with very thin, fine white or colored tips. Rather than an abrupt color transition on your French manicure, blend the colors gradually to create an ombre look. Reverse either style to mix it up even more.
Acce nts and Embellishments
From rhinestones and nail piercings to experimenting with matte and gloss topcoats, adding accents and embellishments maintains popularity. Whether you want hand-drawn designs, patterns that depict your favorite fabric, stickers, nail jewels, or something new, 3-D nail art provides a lot of flexibility. Nails are truly customizable, and whether you go for minimalistic basics or bright, bold patterns, your nail art can be as subtle or as attention-grabbing as you want.

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS
Utilizing your home amenities to keep you fit
You don’t have to go far to get a workout in. Gyms are great but most certainly not a necessity. And those of us with busy lives, work, kids, and all that comes with life, taking time to leave our homes to go work out is not always an option—or at least not a priority.
What if you could find ways to squeeze in quick mini workouts right in the comfort of your own home? Just utilizing a few amenities that can be found right where you are can do the trick, and you don’t need to block out a long period of time to get the job done.
Does your home have stairs? Walk, jog or run up and down your stairs 20 times every hour. It will get you up and moving and elevate your heart rate. Plus, aiming to get those 10,000 steps in? If you have 10 stairs, going up and down them 20 times equals 400 steps!
Dining room chairs or bar stools work great to assist in different lunges, squats and lower body stretches.
Do you have a few chores that need to be done? Pull out the vacuum or mop, and instead of vacuuming or mopping at a slow pace, speed it up a bit—you can definitely work up a sweat. Washing your windows, wiping down the walls or dusting (using a cloth instead of a duster) works your arms.
A yoga mat is a great investment and can be used in any space. Just a few minutes of sit-ups, push-ups, stretches, or fine tuning your favorite yoga positions, is a great way to break up your day and focus on your health.
There’s no excuse when it comes to setting a few minutes aside, several times a day, to focus on you.

LED Light Therapy
Everything you need to know about skin transformation with LED lights
by TAYLOR SHILLAM
The latest skin therapy tools are taking the form of bright lights, a futuristic mask, or a handheld device emitting wavelengths of light. LED light therapy for the skin may sound like an endeavor of the future, but it’s actually one of today’s most popular skin treatments, thanks to celebrities and top estheticians praising the latest treatments delivered with LED light technology.
LED (light-emitting diode) utilizes light that penetrates into and beneath the skin. This light therapy is more than just trendy: Today’s LED light therapies are non-invasive treatments often provided by estheticians and dermatologists to address a wide variety of skin conditions, including wrinkles, sagging skin, and acne, revealing a clearer, brighter complexion. It has been shown to deliver a solid defense against acne, inflammation, and signs of aging.
While LED light techniques can be used anywhere on the skin, they are most often used for facial treatments. There are also at-home treatments and devices available to incorporate LED light therapy into your daily routine at your convenience.
How Does LED Light Therapy Work?
LED light therapy works through light emitted at various wavelengths, which are selected based on each patient’s needs. Each wavelength corresponds to a different visible color, with varying depths of skin penetration, and a different benefit for the skin.
Red light therapy has been exceptionally popular, from its in-office treatments to its in-store beauty products. Red light therapy often promotes circulation within the skin, along with collagen and elastin production, promoting strong, youthful skin. It’s also known to help banish inflammation, energize the skin, and aid the
77 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL
skin’s repair and restoration process—all valuable in treating an array of conditions, from acne to psoriasis. Red light therapy is often provided in the form of a light panel, wand or face mask.
Antimicrobial blue light is known to affect the outermost layer of the skin to banish acne-causing bacteria. Yellow and green LED light penetrate deeper to treat skin sensitivity and promote even skin color.
In-Office Light Therapy Treatments
Light therapy is effective in its ability to be customized, including wavelengths used, treatment length, and light source. While in-office LED light therapies are often most beneficial, at-home therapies are available and can still be highly effective.
Preparation for your LED light therapy simply includes a gentle cleansing of the skin before performing your daily skin-care regimen, and it is important to complete the treatment before facial serums or medications are applied.
LED light therapy is often used in conjunction with other complexion-boosting treatments and products, including ointments, creams and facials, to provide best results. Often, appointments are available to combine an LED treatment alongside a facial or massage. For these appointments, eye protection is provided along with a comfortable place to lay down, relax and receive your scheduled treatments. The LED light portion of the treatment typically lasts just 20 to 30 minutes.
There’s no need to plan for downtime after your in-office therapy is complete; simply return to your regularly scheduled activities—just take extra care to stay out of the sun and apply extra sunscreen for the next few days. Because best results with LED light therapy are achieved over time, follow-up appointments may be required to get the results you desire.
LED Light Therapy at Home
Several at-home light therapy products are available to transform your skin at your convenience, including masks, portable wands, and other hand-held devices. Most at-home therapies only require use for a few minutes a day.
Popular at-home devices include the SolaWave Advanced Skincare Wand, used for about five minutes a day to help banish puffiness, fine lines, dark spots and blemishes; and the LightStim for Wrinkles LED Light Therapy Device, recommended by estheticians as a hand-held device that combines two devices in one to fight both acne and wrinkles.
The advanced Foreo UFO 2 Power Mask and Light Therapy Device is popular due to its quick treatments that combine heating, cooling, and pulsating. The device takes just two minutes of use to provide the hydrating, soothing and firming effects you’d receive from a facial.
The Light Salon Boost LED Mask, Trophy Skin RejuvaliteMD Red Light Therapy lamp and Omnilux Contour Flexible LED Face Mask are top at-home therapy choices that can be purchased from a selection of top retailers from WalMart to Nordstrom. Before you buy, research the best products for your goals and plan to incorporate your device into your daily routine for best results.
Is LED Light Therapy Safe?
For most patients, LED light therapy is considered ultrasafe. It is non-invasive, carries few risks, and can be used on skin of all types. With eye protection provided, you won’t have to worry about keeping your eyes safe from long-term light exposure. For patients with rare circumstances, such as enhanced photosensitivity or eye disorders, light therapy may not be advisable.
Whether you’re seeking LED light therapy for fine lines, acne, scarring, collagen production, or reduced skin inflammation, the good news is, this form of skin therapy is customizable enough to address it all. To get started, define your skin-care goals and consult a professional.
The best results from LED light therapy are seen over time— so whether you’re receiving a professional in-office treatment or using a take-home product, keep in mind that results take time to achieve and maintain. Find a way to incorporate LED light therapy into your regular routine, and you could be well on your way to glowing through the spring!

EASTER TRADITIONS
DISCOVER THE MEANING OF EASTER AND SOME OF ITS TRADITIONS
ARTICLE 94
COURTESY
As Easter Sunday approaches, many people are getting ready to celebrate the holiday with various traditions and activities. While there are plenty of things to do before the Easter Bunny arrives, taking some time to learn about the holiday’s history can make it even more special.
Easter Sunday, which falls on April 9 this year, has been celebrated since the second century as a commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Over time, many traditions have developed to mark the occasion, including Easter egg hunts and visits with the Easter Bunny, among others. These traditions can vary from region to region, family to family, and culture to culture.
Sunrise Easter Service
One long-standing tradition is the sunrise Easter service, which dates back to 1732 when the Moravian Church held the first service at dawn in Germany. This practice honors the moment when Mary discovered Jesus’ tomb was empty early in the morning.
Ham/Lamb
Although the choice of what to serve for Easter dinner might come down to taste preference, the menu holds great significance for some. In early Jewish history, lambs were sacrificed as offerings to God and served regularly as part of the Passover feast. Then, when Jesus died during Passover, he represented the ultimate sacrifice for sin, the “lamb of God,” so the animal evolved into a meaningful symbol for Christians. Many Orthodox Christians still follow the Jewish Orthodox customs of not eating any pork, so lamb takes center stage at their Easter meal.
The Easter Bunny and Easter Baskets
The Easter Bunny and Easter baskets are also popular Easter traditions that have evolved over time. The Easter Bunny is believed to have
originated from ancient spring and fertility celebrations, while Easter baskets may have originated with Middle Eastern farmers bringing baskets of seedlings to be blessed for a successful harvest.
Hot Cross Buns
These festive rolls have their origins in ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, where they were considered symbols of honor for their goddesses. Eventually, they gained popularity during Easter in England, where bakers were restricted from selling spiced breads except on special occasions such as the Friday before Easter.
Hot cross buns, baked on Good Friday, were believed by many English people to never grow moldy and were therefore kept as good luck charms. They accompanied sailors on voyages and were buried in piles of grain to prevent rodents. Today, these buns mainly serve as a representation of the Christian symbol of the cross.
Egg Tapping Game
The Easter tradition of egg tapping, also known as egg fighting, egg knocking, egg pacqueing, egg boxing, egg picking or egg jarping, involves two people tapping the pointed ends of eggs together until one cracks, with the winner being the person who cracks the most eggs. This game originated in Medieval Poland and is still played in many parts of the world today. In Louisiana, the town of Marksville holds an annual official egg-tapping competition with stringent rules and regulations, and winners must demonstrate that their eggs are real by cracking and eating them at the end of the event.
Whether you choose to commemorate the holiday with traditions that are centuries-old or create your own new traditions, there are many ways to make this Easter Sunday a memorable one.

Easter Egg Hunts continue to spread springtime cheer
by JILLIAN CHANDLER
As spring makes its arrival here in North Idaho, the air begins to warm, the sun makes itself known, and the much-anticipated Easter Bunny makes his arrival. There’s also another special “bunny” who spreads Easter cheer, and that’s Coeur d’Alene local Eric Kensbock, an outdoor enthusiast and advocate for bringing people together.
Thanks to Eric and his team of “volunteer bunnies,” two spectacular Easter egg hunts will be taking place in and around Coeur d’Alene in the weeks, and days, leading up to Easter Sunday.
Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt
Eric will once again team up with Dana and Todd Bellefuille of The Village Bakery to host their Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt 2023. “This event really warms my heart,” shares Eric. The Easter Egg Hunt is geared toward children of all ages with special needs. Balloons are tied to the candy-filled eggs so all eggs are easily accessible to all of those participating.
There are some special prize eggs as well, which have raffle tickets inside. The lucky children who end up with one of these eggs will get to choose one of the many Easter baskets donated by generous individuals and businesses throughout North Idaho.
2023 marks the third year of the event, which is scheduled for 11am on Saturday, April 1, at Majestic Park in Rathdrum.

North Idaho Easter Egg Hunt 2023
2023 marks Eric’s fourth year running the North Idaho Easter Egg Hunt. The hunt usually begins approximately three weeks prior to Easter. As Eric shares, “I have a huge tie in with a lot of the restaurants and food truck owners who donate gift certificates/ cards, and I hide an egg in various cities throughout North Idaho [and] I’ll post a picture and clue [of where to find the egg]. The person who finds it will win a gift certificate/card.”
Eric does this every day up until the Friday before Easter, and on the weekends, he puts on Easter Egg Hunts for kids at various parks throughout North Idaho. “I’ll scatter about 300 to 500 eggs filled with candy and some with special goodies in them,” he smiles.
The culmination of the great North Idaho Easter Egg Hunt takes place the Saturday before Easter, April 8, where roughly 10,000 eggs will be hidden (and some not so hidden) along the trail of Tubbs Hill in downtown Coeur d’Alene.
Keep an eye out for a North Idaho Easter Egg Hunt 2023 Facebook page, which should be out early March, according to Eric, as well as information on North Idaho Foodies Facebook page. There is where you can find details and clues about where eggs are hidden throughout local communities. Individuals or businesses that would like to get involved can reach out to Eric on Facebook Messenger or email him at erickensbock@gmail.com.
Happy hunting!
