Embracing Change: A Journey Through Transformation and Growth
As the seasons shift, so too does our community. We watch the familiar ebb and flow, and while a part of us often resists these changes, the truth is that change is essential. Growth can't happen in stillness—it thrives in the transitions and moments when the world around us begins to evolve.
I won’t use the old caterpillar-turned-butterfly metaphor. Still, the sentiment holds: change challenges us because it disrupts our routines, sense of comfort, and attachment to what we know. And yet, in these moments of discomfort, we find new opportunities, perspectives, and strengths.
As we prepare to say goodbye to the warmth of summer and welcome the crispness of fall, let us embrace the inevitable changes around us. In this issue, we explore the shifts happening in our surroundings and the
exciting possibilities that come with them. Change is, after all, not something to fear, but something to grow with. As you dive into this magazine, be sure to check out the inspiring story of Found Clubs & Blessing Group, a blessing to students in Gig Harbor and beyond. Discover how the Local Kiwanis Chapter is making a national impact by standing by the children and veterans in our community. And don’t miss out on on how fall days bring fun times to the Gig Harbor waterfront. These stories, along with many others, offer a rich tapestry of what makes our community vibrant and full of life.
Here's to new beginnings, growth, and the beauty of embracing what’s next.

Beyond aesthetic enhancements, clients can benefit from wellness therapies such as acupuncture, nutritional counseling and stress management programs. This comprehensive focus on health and wellbeing distinguishes medical spas as true sanctuaries for rejuvenation, helping clients achieve a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The incorporation of practices such as meditation, yoga and mindfulness further supports clients’ overall wellbeing, making the experience at a medical spa not just about looking good but also feeling great from the inside out.
Finding the Perfect Med Spa: Your guide to choosing the right team
Selecting the right med spa and team is crucial for achieving your aesthetic and wellness goals. Start by researching reputable med spas with positive reviews and licensed medical professionals on staff. Schedule consultations to discuss your needs and assess their expertise. During visits, note the facility’s cleanliness and ambiance. Ask about the range of services and the technology they use, ensuring they offer FDA-approved treatments. Evaluate their personalized care approach — your med spa should tailor treatments to your unique needs and provide clear post-procedure instructions. Finally, consider the rapport with the staff. A compassionate, knowledgeable team that listens to your concerns and explains procedures clearly can make a significant difference in your med spa experience.

Gig Harbor Medical Spa
Empowering patients to take control of their health, confidence and overall well-being
by PATRICE ALLEN
With a background in emergency medicine and more than 25 years of experience, and as a type 1 diabetic, Sharon Lemoine ARNP, FNP-C, has a passion for health and fitness — and not taking her health for granted. During her time in emergency medicine, Sharon realized that her patients’ ailments, many times, were secondary to their lifestyle choices. “My goal is to educate patients on how to maintain healthy lifestyles while feeling confident and empowering them to age gracefully,” she affirms.
In 2018, Sharon opened her small boutique aesthetic business in Gig Harbor. “I had always been interested in aesthetic nursing and helping women feel confident and healthy,” she reflects. Over the years, Gig Harbor Medical Spa has grown and expanded its services, and today the practice has blossomed into a full wellness center.
“Not only can we build your confidence with aesthetic treatments, but we are making you healthier,” Sharon notes. “I always tell my patients, ‘I can make you feel better now but my satisfaction is knowing 20 years down the road we have slowed down many disease processes and the long-term outcomes will be evident.’”
At Gig Harbor Medical Spa, Sharon is joined by registered nurse injectors Courtney Fulton and Aleigh Stewart. They offer a full menu of aesthetic treatments including neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, as well as dermal fillers. “They are very proactive in educating their patients, providing thorough assessments, as well as guiding patients in the most natural appearing outcomes. Courtney and Aleigh are becoming
leaders in the education sector in this field within the Seattle region,” states Sharon. When it comes to skin care, they have a phenomenal team of master estheticians who provide services including custom facials, dermaplaning, laser hair removal, and their newest service, RF Microneedling. RF Microneedling is known to take years off your appearance by tightening the skin and improving collagen production. It is a great additional option to layer with other treatments for a more youthful appearance overall.
The biggest area of growth has been bioidentical hormone replacement and weight loss. Sharon explains, “These services are giving patients their lives back. By assisting patients with weight loss, we are able to reverse type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol."
Through her work, what Sharon finds most fulfilling is seeing the transformation she witnesses in her patients and the confidence they begin to exude. “Here at Gig Harbor Medical Spa, we focus on the inside. What makes you shine? What makes you feel empowered? What makes you thrive? We listen to the needs of our patients and are here emotionally, physically and spiritually f or everyone.”
Sharon says she is grateful and humbled to be a part of this community and to have a thriving business allowing her to give patients what they deserve; a sense of validation, confidence and quality care. “I have an incredible staff that are all aligned with our mission statement which is: Empower patients to take control of their health, confidence and overall well-being.”
MACEY MIRANTE:
Guiding the Gig Harbor 65+ Senior Community
Compassionate Support for Informed Healthcare Choices with Medicare Simplified
by THOMAS WILLIAMS
Macey Mirante
Independent Insurance Producer
Macey’s journey into this field was deeply personal. “First starting college without a clear career path, I turned to my Grandpa for advice. He shared his joy of singing with local senior living communities after retirement. His encouragement led me to volunteer at a senior living, where I fell in love with the community,” she recalls. This personal connection to the senior community fueled her career growth, from serving in a dining room to becoming an Activities Director and eventually a Marketing Director. Throughout this journey, her heart grew for the seniors she served, and she became acutely aware of their struggles, particularly when navigating Medicare.
After years of witnessing these challenges, Macey decided to branch out independently. She began her insurance journey two years ago to offer seniors simplified Medicare solutions. The mission is clear: to simplify the complexities of Medicare so that individuals can make choices that best suit their needs. Emphasizing
understanding and empathy, she states, “I am an empathetic person who genuinely wants to help people make the right choices for themselves. I want individuals to be on the most suitable plan for their needs, and if that means they are currently on it, then that’s where we will stay.”
Her extensive experience as a senior resource advisor allows her to offer comprehensive services beyond just Medicare enrollment. She helps clients navigate the entire aging process, ensuring they understand all available options and how they fit into their unique lifestyles. Additionally, she leverages her deep industry knowledge to provide valuable resources outside Medicare, guiding seniors in various aspects of their lives.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is “relieving people of a daunting, complicated task of Medicare research. I am their personal shopper for the plan that will suit their unique needs.” This personalized approach has made Macey stand out in the Gig Harbor community:
genuine care and commitment to clients set this business apart from others in the area.
Success is attributed to her family, the community, and clients, who have supported her throughout her journey. She has lived in Gig Harbor for nearly three years and feels deeply connected to the area. “The community-oriented feel has made me feel more than welcome and a place I want to grow my roots,” she says. This commitment is evident in her work and her desire to provide the best service to her clients.
In addition to her work with Medicare, Macey is actively involved with the local senior centers and senior living communities, further solidifying her role as a vital resource for the senior community in Gig Harbor. For those seeking guidance in Medicare or looking for a compassionate advisor who truly understands the challenges faced by seniors, Macey is a beacon of support.
This story is a testament to the impact that one person can have when they follow their passion and dedicate themselves to making a difference in the lives of others. As she continues to grow her business, Macey remains committed to simplifying the complexities of healthcare for seniors, ensuring that they can make educated choices that align with their unique needs and lifestyles.

Virtual consultations enable patients to seek medical advice, obtain prescriptions and manage chronic conditions from the comfort of their homes, making health care more accessible and efficient.
Surgical Innovations: Precision and Recovery

Understanding Holistic Wellness
Holistic wellness is an approach to health that considers the whole person — body, mind and spirit — in achieving optimal wellbeing. Unlike traditional medicine, which often focuses on treating specific symptoms or illnesses, holistic wellness emphasizes the interconnectedness of various aspects of a person’s life and health. It involves a comprehensive look at physical health, emotional balance, mental clarity and spiritual fulfillment. Practices associated with holistic wellness include nutrition, exercise, stress management and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, yoga and meditation. Holistic practitioners aim to identify underlying causes of health issues rather than just addressing symptoms, promoting preventive care and lifestyle changes. This approach encourages individuals to take an active role in their health, fostering a balanced, harmonious life. By integrating various therapeutic practices and focusing on the whole person, holistic wellness seeks to achieve a state of overall health and vitality.
Health with you in mind
PRO SPORT: ELEVATING SPORTS MEDICINE
Personalized care for athletes and the community
Dr. Sean Spaulding and Dr. Forrest Hartford, both small-town PNW natives from Allyn and Friday Harbor, WA, respectively, met at the University of Western States while going through the sports chiropractic program. They bonded over their shared goals of patient-centered care, sports medicine, and love of the Northwest. Together, they opened the first PRO SPORT location in Gig Harbor a decade ago, aiming to provide comprehensive, personalized care for their patients. The addition of Dr. Nels Sampatacos, an orthopedic surgeon and University of Washington School of Medicine alumnus, in 2019 further enhanced PRO SPORT’s offerings. Together, they have cultivated an environment that emphasizes the importance of individualized care and customer service in healthcare.
PRO SPORT’s Gig Harbor clinic is designed to serve the local community with the same level of care provided to elite athletes. “The desire to help people achieve their highest level of performance, whether that be in sport or life, while focusing on a customer service-based model of healthcare,” says the team, is what inspired them to start this business. The clinic offers a wide range of services, including orthopedic surgery, regenerative medicine, sports chiropractic, physical therapy, athletic training, and massage therapy. This multidisciplinary approach allows seamless communication between providers, ensuring that every aspect of a patient’s recovery is optimized.
One of the key differentiators of PRO SPORT is their commitment to one-on-one care. Unlike many larger clinics, PRO SPORT keeps its volume low, allowing for longer appointment times that enable the providers to truly get to know their patients. “By offering exclusively one-to-one care with lower volume and longer appointment blocks, we can take the time to get to know our patients, educate them regarding their care, and design a treatment plan that works with their specific needs and goals,” the team explains. This approach has been a cornerstone of their success and is deeply appreciated by their health-conscious clientele in Gig Harbor.
by DREW JOHNSON
The team at PRO SPORT finds great reward in seeing their patients return to the activities they love, often achieving goals they once thought were out of reach. “Seeing people get back to the activities they love and achieving goals they did not think were possible” is what drives their passion for their work. They attribute much of their success to the motivated and engaged community they serve, noting how involved local residents are with schools, clubs, and other community activities.
In addition to their clinical work, PRO SPORT’s team is deeply involved in the local community. They provide sports medicine coverage for Gig Harbor High School and Olympic Community College athletics, and many of their providers volunteer as coaches for local youth sports and dance clubs. They also offer medical coverage at various races and athletic events, and are active in promoting mental health awareness, having hosted talks at Gig Harbor High School with professional athletes, sports psychologists, and coaches.
PRO SPORT’s dedication to the community extends beyond just treating injuries; they are committed to fostering a culture of health and wellness from a young age. “We believe that these habits start early, and by supporting youth sports, we hope to empower future generations to have healthy activity habits that will empower them to enjoy life to the fullest,” they state.
PRO SPORT is not just a clinic; it’s a comprehensive healthcare experience. Bridging the gap between various healthcare providers ensures that their patients receive cohesive, prompt, and effective care. Their focus on longer appointments and oneon-one care empowers patients to take charge of their health and recovery, making PRO SPORT a vital part of the Gig Harbor and Silverdale communities.
Found Clubs & Blessing Group
A BLESSING TO STUDENTS IN GIG HARBOR AND BEYOND
Anonprofit organization based in Gig Harbor aims to support student-led Christian “Found Clubs” in public schools. They’re a 100 percent volunteer, faith-based organization called the Blessing Group.
It all began with a conversation in the summer of 2021, Sherryl Weiss, founder, recalls. She was chatting with a couple of middle schoolers on a local dock regarding the upcoming school year. The conversation was simple but grieved Sherryl’s heart and spirit. The following spring, Sherryl was listening to the words of the song “The Blessing” at a Phil Wickham concert, and her
heart was overwhelmed “with the truth of God’s love for the youth of our generation and generations to come.” Aware that children are plagued by confusion and hurt and a sincere need to belong, Sherryl made it her mission to create Found Clubs in public schools. In September of 2022, she along with her group of “praying grandmas” birthed the Blessing Group.
“Our goal is to support student-led Christian Found Clubs in public schools in Pierce, Kitsap and Lewis counties, and across the nation — wherever God leads,” says Sherryl. “We want this generation of students to know they are not alone. We want to foster relationships, hope and fun, providing them with a safe

place to gather in support of each other while finding God’s truth.” All students are invited to join Found Clubs.
The organization currently has 40 members, including mentors and their corporate board. Members currently represent 10 local churches in the Gig Harbor area, working together as the body of Christ, the ‘Big C’ Church! They are the Hands and Feet of Jesus supporting students in public schools. “An unforeseen ministry of this endeavor is that our Blessing Group members are given a new purpose and, in some cases, a new lease on life,” Sherryl adds. Grandparents can make a difference in society and in the lives of this generation.
Schools with clubs currently up and running include Swiftwater Elementary, Clear Creek Elementary, Kopachuck Middle School, Goodman Middle School, Gig Harbor High School, Peninsula High School and Lincoln High School. North Lake Elementary, Harbor Ridge Middle School and several others are in varying stages of processing.
“What we do goes well beyond school walls, though; we take it out into the community,” shares Debbie MacGougan, Blessing Group VP of marketing. The Blessing Group has hosted Worship in the Park events the last two summers at Sehmel Amphitheater for students, combining Christian music, games, pizza and praise.
When it comes to what the Blessing Group finds most rewarding about the work they do, Sherryl and Debbie agree, “Having new clubs launched and knowing students are being reached. Giving praise and glory to God for all of His work getting these clubs pulled together, up, running and growing. We are excited to see the great gift of faith the Lord is developing in our children and grandchildren!”

Local Kiwanis Chapter has the Best National Program
STANDING BY THE CHILDREN AND VETERANS IN OUR COMMUNITY
Kiwanis is a national nonprofit organization, with local chapters all over the country. But it could be argued that our local chapter is one of the best — and it seems like the larger national Kiwanis agrees. The Gig Harbor Kiwanis, established in 1968, runs a local program (called their signature program) to support kids in the community — the KCK (Kiwanis Cares for Kids). This program was awarded national Kiwanis recognition as being the third best in the country.
The KCK focuses on 2,500 children in the community providing clothing, food pantries in schools, reading programs for kids,
books, leadership programs, and distributing backpacks. This program, in the past, provided an array of donated clothing for which they found out — through their connections in schools — were going unused. Children in school wearing the donated clothing were being bullied, as it was obvious that what they were wearing was “different.” When the members of Kiwanis heard about this, they realized that something needed to change. They needed to provide clothing that children not only needed but wanted too.
To do this, they receive wish lists from school counselors, which they fulfill by providing brand new clothes and supplies for the school year. This is why our local chapter has garnered national
recognition, because it offers a program that responds to the individual needs of our local kids.
Gig Harbor Kiwanis is very involved in the community, and not just in its KCK program. They make pancakes for Permission to Start Dreaming, host regular food drives and diaper derbies, support Olympic kayakers by buying their kayaks, support adults with special needs, and every year they host a veterans celebration.
This year’s celebration commemorates 80 years since D-Day; the guest speaker being a local writer and brigade commander enumerating on the history of Pointe du Hoc, France. These veteran celebrations really are special, being the largest indoor function in Gig Harbor. The 350 guests are served catered food on placemats designed by local kids in the Antique Airplane Museum Hangar, where they listen to the guest speaker and connect with other veterans. Each veteran receives a challenge coin specially made for the event. It has become a highlight yearly event, something that has really succeeded in honoring our veterans for their service and recognizing their unique struggles and joys.
For more information on local Kiwanis events (there are honestly too many to mention), the up-and-coming Veterans Celebration, or how you can be involved, please see their website at GigHarborKiwanis.org. Perhaps you can be a part of changing the local community one child, one individual, at a time. Support could be as simple as buying a burger from Kiwanis during the summer concert series or donating food to their food drives. However you choose to get involved, when it comes to our local Kiwanis chapter, there’s something for everyone.
This is why our local chapter has garnered national recognition, because here is a program that responds to the individual needs of our local kids.
The ‘Election Year Effect’
What this means for the price of your home
The “Election Year Effect” on the real estate market sparks curiosity among many. One of the first questions raised is how an election year influences home prices.
According to Case-Shiller data, home prices have increased by an average of 4.84 percent during election years since 1987, compared to 4.44 percent in non-election years. While this difference is minimal, it suggests that factors other than the election play a more significant role in the real estate market.
Three key elements that have a more profound impact on the market than a presidential election are:
1. Interest Rates
2. Inflation
3. Inventory Levels
by
Let's discuss the above-listed scenarios that I believe are affecting the current real estate market.
The Cost of Lending
The real estate market experienced a significant slowdown in 2021 when interest rates surged from 4 percent to 6 percent almost overnight. This sudden increase marked the first major market slowdown in nearly a decade. Despite the rise in rates, low inventory levels helped maintain property values, thanks to the basic economic principle of supply and demand. Currently, 67 percent of potential buyers are hesitant, waiting for interest rates to decrease. At the same time, the market remains at less than two months of available inventory. This suggests that demand is likely to skyrocket once rates do drop, as indicated by a March 2024 survey
conducted by PureSpectra.
Inflationary Levels
Directly affecting interest rates, inflation has been a challenge for everyone. When the central bank raises interest rates to combat inflation, borrowing becomes more expensive, leading consumers and businesses to reconsider significant purchases or investments. This reduction in spending typically slows down demand, which can help ease inflation.
Inventory Levels
In the South Sound, inventory has been scarce for over five years. A balanced market typically has six months of inventory, but the region has been hovering around two months or less. This level of scarcity has kept prices from dropping, even during periods of higher interest rates. The same PureSpectra survey revealed that 67 percent of homebuyers are waiting for interest rates to decline. The question is whether this election season will lead to rate drops and increased spending.
The Election Year Effect
What we know is that during election years, uncertainty rises, leading many buyers to sit on the sidelines. November is usually a slower month in the real estate market due to the holiday season and the change in weather. The added uncertainty of an election only amplifies this effect.
Real estate is the long game when it comes to investing. Savvy buyers buy when no one else buys and then sell when everyone else buys. My advice is to partner up with a REALTOR who knows the ins and outs of your needs, paired with the current events, and you will benefit from the growing wealth of owning real estate.
Choosing Mediation in a High-Conflict World A path to resolution
by FELICIA SOLEIL, ATTORNEY/MEDIATOR
In a world increasingly characterized by high conflict, mediation offers a beacon of hope and a practical approach to resolving marital disputes. In separation and divorce, mediation involves a neutral third party who facilitates communication between disputing parties to help them reach mutually acceptable agreements. This stands in stark contrast to the adversarial nature of traditional litigation, providing a more harmonious and collaborative path to conflict resolution.
One of the most compelling reasons to choose mediation in a highconflict marital dissolution is its emphasis on communication and understanding. High-conflict marital disputes often escalate due to poor communication and misunderstanding. Mediation encourages open dialogue, allowing you to express your concerns and perspectives in a controlled and respectful setting. The goal is to not only help smooth over misunderstandings but to also foster empathy and cooperation.
Other advantages of mediation include flexibility and adaptability. Unlike rigid court procedures, mediation can be tailored to fit the specific needs of your unique situation. The process is informal, often on Zoom, and a good mediator has the freedom to employ various techniques to help get to resolution. This flexibility also lends itself well to fostering more creative solutions than may be available through traditional litigation.
Mediation is also generally much less time-consuming and costly compared to litigation. High-conflict cases can last for months and well over a year in the court system, draining your
financial and emotional resources. On the other hand, an average divorce mediation can usually reach full settlement within a few months. The cost savings are substantial, as mediation typically requires fewer legal fees and less time away from work and other responsibilities. This efficiency can be especially crucial in highconflict situations where prolonged stress and uncertainty can exacerbate tensions.
Furthermore, mediation offers a confidential and private setting for resolving disputes. Mediation sessions are private, and the discussions and negotiations are confidential. This privacy can encourage more honest and open communication and creative problem-solving.
Mediation’s focus on communication, flexibility, efficiency and confidentiality makes it an effective tool for resolving disputes in a more non-adversarial and constructive manner. The ultimate goal is to not only work toward resolving immediate concerns but also to lay the groundwork for a more cooperative and understanding relationship in the future. In a world burdened by conflict, mediation offers a path to peace and resolution.
Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via Zoom videoconference or phone.
Building Better Solutions for Clients
With over 30 years experience serving families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County, Felicia Soleil provides more constructive alternatives to dissolving a marriage outside of a courtroom. In addition to her family law practice, she also provides mediation services, offering legal support, education and case management - from simple to complex - for couples transitioning through separation and divorce.

Addressing Dry Mouth
Causes and prevention of dental decay and tooth loss
Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a condition characterized by an insufficient production of saliva. This issue, which can significantly impact oral health, becomes more prevalent with age and is a major cause of dental decay and tooth loss among the elderly.
Causes of Dry Mouth
Several factors contribute to dry mouth. Medications are a primary cause; many prescription and over-the-counter drugs list dry mouth as a side effect. These include antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers, diuretics, and medications for hypertension, depression and anxiety.
Medical conditions can also lead to dry mouth. Autoimmune diseases like Sjögren’s syndrome, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are notable contributors. Additionally, cancer treatments, particularly radiation therapy to the head and neck, can damage salivary glands and reduce saliva production.
Lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption exacerbate dry mouth. Dehydration, often due to inadequate fluid intake or excessive caffeine consumption, is another significant factor.
Preventing Dental Decay and Tooth Loss
Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by neutralizing acids produced by bacteria, washing away food particles and providing disease-fighting substances. When saliva production is compromised, the risk of dental decay and tooth loss increases. Here are some strategies to mitigate these risks:
• Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly helps remove plaque and prevent decay. Consider using an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacterial load.
• Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help alleviate dry mouth symptoms. Sipping water frequently keeps the mouth moist and helps wash away food particles and bacteria.
• Choose Products that Increase Salivary Flow: Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production. Opt for gum containing xylitol, a natural sweetener that can help prevent tooth decay. This is true for all xylitol-based products, including sugar-free candy. Another salivary stimulator is a product called XyliMelt discs.
• Use Saliva Substitutes: Over-the-counter saliva substitutes and mouthwashes designed for dry mouth can provide temporary relief and help maintain moisture levels in the mouth.
• Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol: Both substances can dry out the mouth and increase the risk of decay and oral infections. Limiting or avoiding them can improve overall oral health.
• Regular Dental Check-ups: Frequent visits to the dentist for cleanings and examinations are essential. A dentist can identify early signs of
decay and suggest specific treatments or preventive measures tailored to individuals with dry mouth.
• Modify Medications: If medication-induced dry mouth is severe, consult with a health-care provider. They may adjust the dosage or switch to alternative medications with fewer side effects.
Addressing dry mouth proactively through these measures can significantly reduce the risk of dental decay and tooth loss, ensuring better oral health and quality of life, especially as one ages.

College Savings Month!
529 Plans
article courtesy OF NANCY HARRIS, CMFC, CDFA PRESIDENT, LPL FINANCIAL PLANNER, NEW FOUNDATION WEALTH GROUP LPL FINANCIAL PLANNER, NEW FOUNDATION WEALTH GROUP
College Savings Plans (aka 529 Plans) simplify and provide tax benefits for parents, grandparents, other family members and friends to save for children’s college AND retirement. Here are some of the main benefits:
• Annual gifting - You can gift up to the gift tax exclusion each year.
• Accelerated gifting and estate planning - You can accelerate your impact and accomplish some estate planning by gifting each beneficiary up to $180,000 as an individual or $360,000 per couple.
• Tax free earnings - Earnings are tax-deferred and tax-free when used for qualified education expenses. This may allow the account to grow faster through tax-free compounding.
• College and Roth IRA - Starting this year, Congress is allowing up to $35,000 in leftover savings in the college savings plan to roll over tax-free into Roth individual retirement accounts!
• The “grandparent loophole” - FAFSA has been revised in 2024, creating the so-called “grandparent loophole.” Grandparents can now use a 529 plan without affecting the student's financial aid eligibility. Previously, withdrawals could have reduced aid eligibility by up to 50 percent of the amount of the distribution – aka the “financial aid trap.” If you would like to know more about how a college savings plan can benefit your family and loved ones, please visit our website at NewFoundatioinWG.com or contact us at 253.254.6005. Let’s invest in the next generation!
Prior to investing in a 529 Plan investors should consider whether the investor's or designated beneficiary's home state offers any state tax or other state benefits such as financial aid, scholarship funds, and protection from creditors that are only available for investments in such state's qualified tuition program. Withdrawals used for qualified expenses are federally tax free. Tax treatment at the state level may vary. Please consult with your tax advisor before investing.

Discover local art and meet the makers
by ELIZABETH RAY
The Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour, an artistic tradition that has flourished for over three decades, captivates art lovers and the local community. Founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated Gig Harbor artists and craftspeople, the tour was born out of a desire to offer the public a unique glimpse into the creative process. This year, the free event, led by President Lea Basile-Lazarus, celebrates its 31st consecutive year, with 44 artists showcasing their work across 25 destinations.
Visitors to this year’s tour can expect a rich tapestry of art forms to explore, ranging from stone sculptures and watercolor paintings to ceramics, jewelry, woodworking, and much more. The diversity of mediums reflects the vibrant creativity thriving in Gig Harbor. While many artists will demonstrate their craft during the tour, those who share studio spaces might not have the opportunity to do so. However, all are eager to engage with visitors, sharing their techniques, inspirations, and the stories behind their work.
The Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour serves as an artistic showcase and educational platform, offering the community a chance to witness the intricacies of artistic creation. "We screen our artists so that all are accomplished and knowledgeable in what they do," says Basile-Lazarus, highlighting the tour’s commitment to quality and expertise. This focus on education extends to visitors of all ages, particularly children, who might otherwise lack exposure to the arts due to diminishing funding for arts education in schools.
Participating in the tour offers numerous benefits to artists and the community, including a unique once-a-year opportunity to acquire art. Artists can share their processes, educate visitors about their craft, sell their work, and promote the vibrant artistic community of Gig Harbor.
For visitors, the experience is both educational and enriching, offering a deeper appreciation for the arts and the opportunity to meet local artists and support local talent by purchasing original pieces directly from the artists.
Beyond the studios, the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour invites participants to fully immerse themselves in the charm of the local area. Whether enjoying a picnic in a park, dining at one of Gig Harbor’s fine restaurants, or exploring the waterfront shops, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Out-of-town visitors can easily find accommodations in local hotels and bed and breakfasts, making participating in the event convenient.
This year’s tour is bolstered by the support of local sponsors, including Print Solutions, Land Use and Property Law, Gessel Painting, Remax, Windermere, Penninsula Art League, Anderson Homes, Best Western, and BECU, which serves as the Open Studio Tour partner. Their contributions and a grant from the City of Gig Harbor’s Creative Art Grants Program ensure that the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour remains a cherished tradition for years to come.
For more information and to plan your visit, check out their website at GigHarborOpenStudioTour.org. This year’s tour will take place from September 20 - 22, 2024, with free self-guided tours available from 10 am to 5 pm.

Bloom Boutique and Team Schulte partner to bring Cinderella moments to local teens
by PAIGE SCHULTE
In a heartwarming collaboration aimed at spreading joy and community spirit, the last two years, Bloom Boutique teamed up with Team Schulte & Co to support Ali’s Prom Project, a Tacoma-based charity dedicated to making prom dreams a reality for underprivileged teens. The partnership has sparked a unique initiative where the community can contribute to this cause while also receiving a special token of appreciation donated by Bloom and Team Schulte.
Ali’s Prom Project has long been known for its mission to empower teens from low-income, homeless or foster care backgrounds by providing them with new and gently used formal wear. This includes everything from dresses and accessories to shoes, thanks in part to Bloom Boutique and Team Schulte & Co of Neighborhood Experts Real Estate, that completes the Cinderella experience.
The last two years leading up to spring break for the community, community members are encouraged to participate in a shoe drive hosted at Bloom Boutique in Uptown Gig Harbor. The premise is simple yet impactful: For every pair of new or lightly used formal footwear donated by the community, donors will receive a complimentary pair of stylish spring sandals courtesy of Bloom and Team Schulte. This initiative not only encourages charitable giving but also rewards donors with a gesture of thanks that they can enjoy. “Shoes can be difficult to make fit. You can’t take them in or out to fit just perfectly, so the shoe drives fill a big need for these teens to complete their prom outfit experience,” explains Ali of Ali’s Prom Project.

It’s a wonderful way for the community to come together, support a meaningful cause, and support local. Over the last two years, the community has really shown up — with over 100 pairs donated each year. “This is what small towns are made up of, so much love, support and collaboration from our families and customers. We are lucky to live here,” says Paige Schulte of Team Schulte & Co.
There are numerous other ways to contribute to Ali’s Prom Project, like donating dresses, giving financially, supporting through programs like AmazonSmile or Fred Meyer’s Community Rewards, shopping from their Amazon wish list, or volunteering at their boutique.
By participating in the shoe drive, individuals not only help provide essential items for prom-goers but also contribute to fostering a sense of inclusivity and celebration within the community. As the saying goes, it takes a village, and Bloom Boutique and Team Schulte are proud to invite everyone to join them in creating magical moments for deserving teens through Ali’s Prom Project next spring too!
Whether you’re cleaning out your closet or simply want to make a difference, this is your chance to give where you live and share in the joy of giving back.

Unveiling the Stories Behind Gig Harbor’s Street Signs
Harbor History Museum 4121 Harborview Dr. Gig Harbor, Washington 253.858.6722
Gig Harbor, Washington, is a city steeped in history, with its road signs serving as markers of its rich heritage. Each name on these signs carries a story, reflecting the city’s past, the people who shaped it, and the culture that continues to thrive.
courtesy of HARBOR HISTORY MUSEUM e e
In the late 1800s, Gig Harbor was a small, boat-dependent community with few roads. The early road signs were simple and often crafted locally from wood. These signs served a practical purpose, indicating connections between different parts of the area. For example, the Gig Harbor-Longbranch Road, now Burnham Drive, connected the harbor to Longbranch. Similarly, the Purdy-Kitsap Road, later renamed Peacock Hill Road, was named after the Peacock family, early settlers who played a significant role in the area’s development.
As Gig Harbor grew, its streets were named following small-town conventions. “Harborview” was originally “Front Street,” and cross streets were named after trees like Ash, Oak, and Walnut.
When the town was incorporated in 1946, a new wave of street names emerged, honoring local families integral to the community’s development. Names like Jerisich, Judson, Kimball, Skansie, Dorotich, Ross, Burnham, Bujacich, Austin, and Hunt were introduced, each with
HarborHistoryMuseum.org
its own story. Dorotich Street, for instance, is linked to Croatian families, Joseph and Pasco Dorotich, who were early settlers. Pasco Dorotich was the first owner of the FV Shenandoah, a historic vessel displayed at the Harbor History Museum. These names were not just labels but reminders of the individuals and families who helped shape Gig Harbor into what it is today.
The tradition of naming streets after local figures persisted as the city developed. “Borgen Boulevard” was named after the Borgen family, and it is known for Borgen’s Building Supply, which once stood where Donkey Creek Park is today. This park, located where Donkey Creek empties into Gig Harbor, was recently renamed txwaalq ł, meaning “place where the game is found,” in recognition of the indigenous sxw babš or Swift Water people who originally inhabited the area.
The naming of new roads in Gig Harbor remains a collaborative effort involving local historians, civic leaders, tribes, developers, and residents. This process ensures that the names reflect Gig Harbor’s history and culture, preserving the legacy of the past while welcoming the future.

Back to School
As school resumes, establishing a consistent routine is crucial for children’s success and well-being. A structured schedule helps students manage their time effectively, reducing stress and enhancing their ability to balance academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities and relaxation. Regular sleep patterns ensure they are well-rested, improving concentration and performance in school. Consistent meal times provide the necessary energy for active learning and participation. Moreover, a steady routine fosters a sense of security and stability, essential for emotional and mental health, especially during the transition back to school. Parents can support this by setting specific times for homework, leisure and chores, and by maintaining open communication about their children’s daily experiences and challenges. Encouraging a regular routine not only boosts academic performance but also helps children develop essential life skills such as time management and self-discipline, setting a foundation for long-term success.

Hosting the Perfect Thanksgiving
A guide
a memorable feast
Hosting the perfect Thanksgiving is all about planning, preparation, and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for your guests. Start by setting a thoughtful guest list and sending out invitations early to ensure everyone can attend.
Once you have a headcount, plan your menu, balancing traditional favorites like turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce with a few unique dishes to surprise and delight your guests. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences to accommodate all your guests comfortably.
Preparation is key to a smooth Thanksgiving day. Make a detailed shopping list and shop early to avoid last-minute stress. Prepare as many dishes as possible in advance — pies, casseroles and side dishes can often be made a day or two ahead. On the day of the feast, create a cooking schedule to ensure everything is ready at the same time.

Setting the scene is equally important. Decorate your home with seasonal touches such as autumn leaves, pumpkins and candles to create a cozy, festive atmosphere. Arrange your dining table thoughtfully, with plenty of space for each guest and a beautiful centerpiece to set the tone.
As your guests arrive, greet them with a warm welcome and perhaps a seasonal cocktail or mocktail. Encourage mingling with light appetizers before the main meal. During dinner, facilitate engaging conversations by sharing what you’re thankful for and inviting others to do the same.
Finally, don’t forget the importance of hospitality. Ensure everyone feels at home, attend to any needs promptly, and most importantly, enjoy the company and the celebration. With thoughtful planning and a warm spirit, your Thanksgiving gathering will be memorable for all the right reasons.

As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, our bodies need a robust immune system to fend off the seasonal colds and flu. The transition from summer to fall brings a plethora of nutrient-rich foods that can enhance our immunity. Incorporating these fall superfoods into your diet can help you stay healthy and energized during the colder months.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a quintessential fall favorite and a powerhouse of nutrition. Rich in vitamins A and C, pumpkin boosts immune function by supporting the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections. Vitamin A, derived from the beta-carotene in pumpkins, plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of our skin, acting as the first line of defense against pathogens.
The high fiber content in pumpkin aids digestion, promoting a healthy gut environment that is essential for optimal immune function. The antioxidants present in pumpkin, such as alphacarotene and beta-carotene, protect your cells from free radicals and reduce inflammation. Enjoy pumpkin in soups, roasted as a side dish, or even in smoothies for a delicious and immuneboosting treat. Pumpkin seeds are also beneficial as they contain zinc, another nutrient that supports immune health.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are another fall staple that is packed with betacarotene, a precursor to vitamin A. This nutrient is vital for maintaining healthy skin and mucous membranes, which act as barriers against infections. Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin C, manganese, and antioxidants that further enhance your immune system. The fiber in sweet potatoes supports digestive health, ensuring a well-functioning gut, which is crucial for overall immune health.
The antioxidants in sweet potatoes, including anthocyanins in purple varieties, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and support immune health. Sweet potatoes are incredibly versatile and can be baked, mashed, or used in stews to take full advantage of their health benefits. Their natural sweetness also makes them a comforting and nutritious addition to fall meals.
Pomegranates
Pomegranates are in season during the fall and are renowned for their high levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and polyphenols. These compounds help protect your immune cells from damage and support overall immune function. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, stimulates the production of white blood cells and helps them function more effectively, thereby enhancing the body’s ability to fight infections.
Pomegranate juice or seeds can be added to salads, yogurt, drinks, or enjoyed on their own for a tangy, health-boosting snack. The antioxidants in pomegranates also reduce inflammation and support cardiovascular health by improving cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Pomegranates have been shown to have antiviral properties, making them an excellent addition to your diet during cold and flu season. Enjoy the sweet-tart flavor and the numerous health benefits of this vibrant fruit.
Boost Your Well-Being Essential health tips for fall
To stay healthy during the fall months, focus on boosting your immune system and maintaining overall wellness. Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamins and antioxidants, into your diet. Foods like pumpkins, apples and leafy greens are excellent choices. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and herbal teas. Prioritize regular exercise, taking advantage of the crisp weather for outdoor activities like hiking or brisk walking. Get sufficient sleep to support your immune function, aiming for seven to nine hours per night. Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs, and consider getting a flu shot for added protection. Finally, manage stress through mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, to keep both your mind and body in peak condition.
Garlic is a natural immune booster known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It contains allicin, a compound that enhances the response of white blood cells to fight off infections. Incorporating garlic into your meals can help protect against colds and flu. Allicin is released when garlic is crushed or chopped, so let it sit for a few minutes before cooking to maximize its health benefits.
Garlic also supports cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, further contributing to overall well-being. Use garlic in soups, stews, or roasted vegetables to add flavor and health benefits. The pungent aroma and taste of garlic not only enhance your meals but also provide significant health advantages.
Incorporating these fall superfoods into your diet can significantly boost your immune system and keep you healthy during the colder months. Embrace the season by enjoying the rich flavors and nutritional benefits these foods have to offer. Stay well, and enjoy the beauty and bounty of fall!
VITAMIN C, A POTENT ANTIOXIDANT, STIMULATES THE PRODUCTION OF WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND HELPS THEM FUNCTION MORE EFFECTIVELY, THEREBY ENHANCING THE BODY’S ABILITY TO FIGHT INFECTIONS.

Attitude of Gratitude
Embrace Fall
Energize your health with outdoor activities
As fall arrives, embrace the cooler weather by staying active outdoors. Take advantage of the stunning foliage with activities like hiking, biking or walking in local parks. Not only does this boost physical fitness, but being outside can also improve mood and reduce stress. Fall offers unique opportunities for fun activities like apple picking or visiting pumpkin patches, making exercise enjoyable. Additionally, the crisp air can enhance your energy levels. Aim for at least 30 minutes of outdoor activity several times a week to reap the mental and physical benefits of this vibrant season.
Have you ever let anxiety or a negative mindset keep you from enjoying the present? Shift it with a regular gratitude practice. Just a couple times a week can boost your happiness by 25 percent!
Now is an excellent time to refocus on gratitude and the abundance in your life! Our energy flows where our focus goes. Try stating 3 things you’re grateful for:
1. Who in your life are you grateful for and how come?
2. What in your life are you grateful for (be specific as to why)?
3. What is something about yourself you are grateful for?

Fall days bring fun times to Gig Harbor waterfront by
MARGUERITE CLEVELAND
As the days turn cooler, the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance has some fun activities planned for the fall. Sip and Stroll while touring the waterfront district where businesses will offer sips of wine, cider, craft beer and a variety of spirits. Harborview Drive will have sections closed to pedestrians on Halloween, October 31, 2024, for this family friendly event where local businesses offer Trick or Treat. These events are a great way to support local, small businesses.
Shop
Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 14, 2024, for the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance’s signature shopping experience “Shop Social.” It’s a new take on the annual event formerly known as “Girls Night Out.” Spend the day at Gig Harbor’s Waterfront and enjoy shopping with lots of promotions from local businesses. Throughout the day, take a photo at fun selfie stops and listen to live music. The traditional shopping bags will still be available, but unlike in the past when you had to go to the stores to purchase a few weeks in advance, now there will be the opportunity to purchase online. With just a limited amount available, you will want to snag one. Each bag has swag from local shops as well as coupons and information about the day. Keep checking the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance website (GHDWA.org/events) for updates.
Stay
For a really unique place to crash for a night or two, visit Lodging @ the Boatyard (GigHarborMarina.com/lodging). The Gig Harbor Marina has an on-site guest house and three luxury yachts to choose from. The marina is in the heart of downtown and within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants. There are fully stocked galleys if you wish to cook. Sipping a glass of Washington wine or a craft cocktail tastes so much better while watching an epic sunset or taking in views of Mount Rainier. If you are lucky, you may hear a serenade echoing across the harbor from the Gig Harbor Gondola. Let the gentle rocking of the yachts lull you to sleep in a stateroom.

Savoring the Season: Maximizing the fall harvest
Embrace the bounty of the fall harvest by planning meals around seasonal produce. Start with a visit to local farmers markets, where you’ll find a variety of fresh, nutrient-rich vegetables like squash, pumpkins and root vegetables. Consider preserving excess produce through canning, freezing or fermenting to enjoy flavors year-round. Incorporate these ingredients into soups, stews and casseroles, which can be made in large batches and frozen for later use. Experiment with baking, using apples, pears and pumpkins in pies, breads and muffins. Embrace slow-cooking methods like roasting and braising to enhance the natural sweetness and depth of flavor in fall vegetables. Don’t forget to save seeds from pumpkins and squashes for planting next year or roasting for a healthy snack. Finally, share your bounty with friends and neighbors, fostering a sense of community and gratitude for the season’s harvest.

Opening their tasting room in the heart of Gig Harbor — with doors opening to the community March 9, just in time to welcome spring. Customers will be treated to a welcoming, relaxing and intimate space, with seating for 22 guests, where they can stop in after work with friends or colleagues, or bring the kids along for a family outing.
1. Heat the oil. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
2. Sauté the vegetables. Add the diced onion, minced garlic, diced bell pepper, diced carrot and cubed pumpkin. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5 to 7 minutes.
3. Cook the meat. Add the ground turkey or beef to the pot. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
4. Add the beans and tomatoes. Stir in the black beans, kidney beans and diced tomatoes.
5. Add the broth and spices. Pour in the vegetable or chicken broth. Add the chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, ground cinnamon, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
6. Simmer the chili. Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together.
7. Adjust seasoning. Taste the chili and adjust the seasoning as needed, adding more salt, pepper and/or spices to suit your taste.
8. Serve. Ladle the chili into bowls and top with your favorite toppings, such as shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, fresh cilantro or avocado slices. Or all of the above!
9. Enjoy your warm and hearty Autumn Pumpkin Chili! This recipe is perfect for cozy fall nights and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
