it’s just me, but it seems like 2022 came in with a bang and continued full speed ahead. And now, here we are, in the midst of the holiday season, when life slows down a bit yet there is so much to do to prepare for family gatherings and the end of the year. This has been a year of natural disasters, of war, of division, of inflation, yet here we are, still standing, many of us stronger than we were before. We continue to look to the future, working hard, loving and providing for our families, with the goal of doing our part to create a blessed life for our children—and a better world for generations to come. We all have purpose, and we must live that purpose, despite what is going on around us. We must continue to seek good and do our part to spread that good throughout our neighborhoods, our schools, our communities, and our nation.

Time of the Year over our heads, the food on the table, clothes to keep us warm, a vehicle to transport us to and from work. Opportunities abound this time of year to give back to those less fortunate as well. If you can’t afford to give monetarily to a local charity or organization, you can donate gently used clothing and jackets to women’s and children’s shelters; volunteer your time at a food pantry/bank; go through the kids’ toys and stuffed animals, clean them up, and find a way to get them to those children who are less fortunate. Give and you shall receive. Blessings come to those who assist others—in whatever way that may be. May we focus on what is important in life as the year comes to an end and welcome 2023 with faith, love and hope.

The holiday season is a time to give thanks, as we have so much to be thankful for: the roof

The holiday season has our eyes turned inward toward home. More time spent at home around loved ones has us pulling out the throw blankets and piling on the pillows. This season’s decor has us creating spaces for more time spent doing indoor activities, making room for holiday gatherings and fostering a feeling of festivity. It’s important that your space reflects what’s most comfortable for you. It’s important that the place you wind down and spend the most time mirrors your individual feelings, memories and style. Decorating for the season means something different for everyone, however, there are common priorities that just might spur your holiday humbug into action.

an instant cozy space. Plus, it’s festive! Bright lights are only necessary while reading, otherwise soft light (such as what comes from a fireplace) creates comfort. Since electricity is a fairly recent invention, it makes sense that our bodies would prepare for sleep and relax more in less invasive bright light. Candles are another inexpensive addition to any space during short winter days. Hanging tea light fixtures along stairwells and hallways makes the switching on and off of lights unnecessary, which is especially convenient if half the house has already gone to bed. In some cultures, it’s customary to place candles in window sills to share light with neighbors during the holiday season. This tradition doubles as a way to bring comfort in the home as well.

During the holidays, especially during the winter solstice, it can get pretty dark. One of the themes of the holidays is to bring light into dark spaces. Lighting has a way of creating mood. The same is true in our homes during the holidays. Switching out light fixtures, adding new lamp shades or hanging twinkle lights from dark corners makes for

More time spent indoors means more activity, not less, happens in your home. Wintertime is a time for rest and rejuvenation. Our space can assist us in time well spent. It’s not the time for big renovations, but there are simple strategies that everyone can use to open up and declutter our space for the holidays. If you have kids, this might be a good time to build each of them their own creative corners in an

Wintertime is a time for rest and rejuvenation. out-of-the-way favorite spot, complete with its own light source, pillows, and organization that works for their needs. Actually, this might be a good time for you to build your own creative space, filled with things that both bring you joy and allow you to do whatever makes you feel most constructive. Everyone needs a hub—a space that’s just yours. Otherwise, everyone’s indoor activities go everywhere, and there doesn’t seem to be a place for anything. Encouraging each person in the household to create their own space brings ownership. For common spaces, pay attention to how you and others naturally do things. If there’s a place where people seem to throw their towels, that’s where the laundry hamper goes. If a favorite family activity is movie night, then maybe buy some extra oversized pillows that tuck away in a basket at the side of the couch. This holiday season, bring ownership to your home by tailoring your space to fit your needs. Usually when it comes to the holiday color scheme, don’t choose anything that doesn’t already work. Nobody needs a complete holiday revamp every year. If you’ve chosen pretty basic wall colors, and generally your regular aesthetic is quiet, solid colors, there is lots of room for color during the holidays. Colored lights to wrap up the stairwell, silver tinsel hung from the windowsill, red bows over the doorways. Your tree might just be a jumble of color, filled with ornaments that carry with them memories that grow every year. However, if in your house you already have a lot of color, you might want to tone down the holiday decor with simple glass

tree ornaments and white twinkle lights. Another simple decoration is hanging dried flowers from the tops of the windows, this freshens the air as well as looks festive. Live flowers that will last through the holidays, or even through the entire winter season, is always a welcome look set in direct contrast to the dreary outdoors. This season, choose a color scheme that brings life to your indoors. As you pull out the traditional decorations this holiday season, don’t be afraid to get rid of whatever doesn’t bring you joy. Sometimes those old holiday decorations can really pile up and gather dust. There’s a reason that we tuck those decorations away most of the year. As you cultivate your space, think of what works for you. Create and open up your space for the things you like doing during the holidays, whether it’s holding holiday parties or crashing on the couch for a good holiday movie. Create a space for others, but also don’t be afraid to prioritize something for yourself that helps you to feel productive or cozy. It’s your home, and it reflects you and those you love. This holiday season, decorate in such a way that reflects your fondest memories and encourages the activities that cultivate joy.

Before the First Frost Five tips and tricks to prepare your home for winter by JOSHUA NISHIMOTO

A

s the seasons change from hot summer to cool autumn and into fall, many people find themselves doing some annual chores to make sure that their home is prepared for winter, while many find themselves unprepared for the colder, and wetter, winter months. To make sure that you are ready for the change of season, there are some very easy and cost-effective ways to prepare your home to endure the harshest of winters. Some of these items may end up costing a bit more than you would like to spend upfront but will save you a ton of money in the long run. When you’re preparing to host for the holidays, keep your family warm and comfortable, or just getting ready to embrace winter without spending a lot of money, some of these seemingly minor things can not only save you money but keep your house warm and protected from the harsh winter conditions, adding to the longevity of your home. Here are five helpful tips to keep you and your loved ones comfortable in preparation for winter:

26 26

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022 GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

Check your chimney a n d f i re p l a c e . Be sure to clean your fireplace. Dust ash and other particles can fill the surrounding areas that need to be cleaned before the winter season sets in. Inspect chimneys for damage. Cracks, loose bricks and broken mortar can occur due to ice dams in the room. Be sure to fix any aspects of your chimney that look broken or are starting to deteriorate and may prevent your chimney from working properly. Also, be sure to replace your chimney cap if it’s broken to keep leaves, rain/snow and debris out of your chimney.

Clean your gutters. There are many ways to weatherize your home. In the multitude of items to check off, your gutters can sometimes go unnoticed. Before starting the cleanup process, spread a tarp underneath your gutters to collect all the debris, grime and dead leaves to protect your landscape. Next, scrub the gutters to remove all the gunk. Pull out wet leaves using a plumbing snake, and flush the gutter using a garden hose to clear out the remaining dirt. When finished, you may find it worthwhile to install a gutter guard to keep out leaves, sand grit and other debris. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

Check your furnace. Dirt and debris can build up in your furnace and cause inefficiency, increased energy bills, and even pose a safety risk. Cracks in the furnace can cause deadly poisonous gas to make its way inside your home. In addition, a dirty furnace won’t be able to provide you with a warm, comfortable environment. The furnace filter trapped with lint, pollen and debris obstructs airflow and makes your furnace run longer to heat the house. Be sure to inspect air leaks and insulate them. Also, be sure to clean your filters before the start of the season, and don’t forget to change them every three months. When in doubt, hire a professional for a thorough checkup before the start of the season. They will check all the major components and also test for carbon monoxide leakage.

C h e c k y o u r h o m e ’s h e a t i n g and air conditioning system. There’s never a good time to be stuck in an uncomfortable and possibly deadly cold with a heating system that’s on the fritz. Make sure your systems are up to snuff by hiring a heating technician who will inspect your furnace or heat pump to make sure that it’s in good shape and manufacturer-rated efficiency for roughly $80 to $100. The inspection should also measure carbon monoxide. Making sure to hire a proper technician early on will make it less likely that you’ll need to hire one last minute for crucial repairs.

Tu r n o ff y o u r o u t d o o r h o s e / sprinklers and keep your pipes warm. Your pipes are prone to freezing in frigid temperatures. This can cause damage, such as pipes bursting and water flooding your home. Not only will you have possible damage from flooding, but you will also lose free-flowing water from your taps, causing a terrible inconvenience. To ensure that your pipes are functioning properly during the coldest times of the year, be sure to seal, insulate, use heat tape and keep your faucets slightly open to ensure that water is flowing at temperatures above freezing. Also, be sure to place a bucket under the faucet to prevent water waste. 30

Market Report A return to a more balanced market

verage days on the market (the period of time from when a property goes on the market and the date it goes under contract) and the average months of available inventory are both on the rise. They are still less than a third of the way toward indicating a shift from a seller’s market to a buyer’s market.

32 32

Days on the market today are approaching one month, while a more normal marking is three to four months. It is also a general industry standard that inventory numbers from four to six months are considered neutral. Less inventory than that is considered a seller’s market, while greater inventory than that is considered a buyer’s market. NWMLS reports: “Measured by months of supply, there are only two months of inventory, an improvement from one year ago when there were only about three weeks (0.75 months) of supply, but still well below the four to six months of inventory real estate analysts use as a measure of a balanced market. King County has 2.02 months of supply, but the other counties in the Puget Sound region have less than that. There is 1.61 months of supply in Kitsap County, 1.63 months in Snohomish County and 1.84 months in Pierce County.” The crazed increase in home prices has slowed. They are stabilizing with a chance of seeing them decline from the unsustainable growth we saw in 2021 and the first half of 2022. In 2021, Pierce County home prices increased by nearly 20 percent, while in the first half of 2022 Pierce County home prices increased by over 25 percent. This

NWMLS reports: “Brokers reported 7,504 closed sales during September, down 27 percent from a year ago when they notched 10,289 completed transactions. The median price on last month’s sales across the 26 counties in the report rose about 5.1 percent from a year ago, increasing from $570,000 to $599,000. Prices are down slightly from the August median of $600,000 and from the year’s peak of $660,000 that was reported in May.” $826,703

All this is good news for homebuyers. With reduction higher interest $826,703in real estate price inflation,$4,850,000 rates are the homebuyer’s only remaining headwind. To summarize current market conditions, I firmly believe that this will only be a short period of correction, so homeowners in the Puget Sound area shouldn’t be too concerned, especially given that 64 percent of them are sitting on over 50 percent of home equity. The local economy remains strong. Motivated sellers are seeking corrected pricing in order to capture buyers who are currently in the marketplace, as increasing mortgage rates are reducing buyers’ purchasing power.

Lasting Impact Nonprofit helps students live out their potential

b y R AC H E L K E L LY

W

e were all once children looking forward to what our lives would hold. We all have stood at that pinnacle of potential, with dreams and hopes. Maybe you wanted to be an artist or a dancer. Maybe you wanted to try out soccer or be a writer. Maybe you wanted to be a teacher or a firefighter, and now that’s exactly what you are. Wherever you were, whomever you are, wherever you’ve gone, and whatever you’ve done, you didn’t get there by yourself. You had parents, friends, extended families, communities, tools and resources. You had that one experience, you heard those words that pushed you forward, you read that book, you saw a picture of what you wanted, and you excelled toward it. Without resources, the desire to achieve can only take one so far. One may want to write, but without a pen their words will never make it to paper. When it comes to reaching one’s potential, it’s our community (great and small) that provides those resources. The better the resources, the greater the opportunity. And where there is more opportunity, a community thrives. Communities in Schools is a nonprofit that seeks to provide those resources within the schools themselves, with the goal that “every child sees their greatest potential.” Communities in Schools is a national operation that has functioned for over 46 years, with affiliates all over the

country. Fifteen such affiliates function in Washington state. Each affiliate is its own independent nonprofit, with its own board of directors. One such affiliate operates in the Key Peninsula and was incorporated in 2000. Because each affiliate of Communities in Schools operates independently, the Key Peninsula branch is able to connect with its community according to its specific needs. Independence allows for the flexibility and fluidity that is needed in each subsequent community being served, allowing for a tailored approach, conforming to the community which it serves. Communities in Schools in the Key Peninsula seeks to offer its services within a baseline of equity, accountability, relationships and trust, self-belief (which uplifts community voice), and assets (building upon one’s strengths).

To achieve their goal of seeing each child reach their potential, Communities in Schools in the Key Peninsula (CISP) offers three tiers of support. The first tier is whole school support. Full-time individuals have offices in schools, allowing for face-to-face connection and collaboration on campus. If for whatever reason the school system cannot provide a service needed on campus, Communities in Schools fills that gap. Whole school support often includes things such as attendance, behavior issues, social and emotional learning, and academics. Common examples of whole school support include bully prevention assemblies, grandparents’ day, and the fostering of parent engagement. Those who work on campus have the benefit of not being completely tied to campus; they can provide services wherever they are needed. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

To provide for each tier of support, especially support focused on the individual, Communities in Schools in the Key Peninsula partners with 25 community organizations.

The second tier of support is group intervention. Much like whole school support, group intervention attends to social and emotional learning and behavior issues, but from a peer-to-peer perspective. Group intervention might include such things as an art club or a kindness club during recess. Sometimes the groups are formed around common community characteristics, like a LGBTQ club. The third tier of support focuses on the individual student. This has less to do with greater emotional needs, behavior as it manifests in a group, or even academics. This tier addresses specific needs that are hindering success on a more holistic level. If basic needs are not met, students have little to no chance of succeeding in school. Basic needs generally include food, mental health, housing and safety. To provide for each tier of support, especially support focused on the individual, Communities in Schools in the Key Peninsula partners with 25 community organizations, such as Pacific Lutheran University (PLU), which offers physicals through their nursing program. CISP also relies heavily on their incredible volunteers. Before the pandemic, CISP had 139 volunteers who served an hour per a week. Volunteers are essential to the nonprofit, because volunteers represent the greater community and its desire to see its youngest members thrive. Volunteers are “all in for kids” on campus and meet with students on an individual basis. They are the ones who are interacting on a regular basis, building lasting relationships that prove to make a life-changing impact. When, during the height of the pandemic, volunteers were not allowed in schools, that number dwindled exponentially. Now the volunteers are beginning to come back, but the nonprofit is still about 30 short and actively open to welcoming more. The nonprofit also benefits from donations such as gas and grocery gift cards, which go a long way to supporting the individual needs of students. athy Pifer is a longtime teacher of 35 years, with 25 of those years spent at Harbor Heights Elementary. During that time, she has taught all grades from kindergarten to fifth. Currently she teaches fourth grade. As an elementary teacher, she teaches all subjects, including language arts, math, social studies, science, and social emotional learning. Kathy has always known she wanted a career in education. “My mom used to say that I would be happy as a professional student,” she says. A teacher is someone who keeps learning their whole life, passing on what they learn along the way to those who’ve not yet found out. It was a natural step for Kathy to become an elementary school teacher, a lifelong aspiration, which enabled her to stay and thrive in an environment of learning. In this environment, she is rewarded daily by students who begin to see themselves as learners as they build confidence bit by bit. “Building relationships and trust allow for those ‘aha!’ learning moments to happen,” says Kathy. For her decades of teaching, she has many such stories, some whose hilarity she fondly looks back on. From kindergartners describing snow as a “headache” in their hands, to another kindergartner climbing down the stage during a performance to hand her a very important booger.

His parents, his “little” brother of 6’7” Michael, and his younger sister Caroline have moved a few times in support of Brendan’s dad, who serves as an Active Duty Officer for the US Army. In 2019, for Brendan’s freshman year, the family moved to Gig Harbor, where he began to attend Gig Harbor High School. “My mom has always encouraged us to ‘bloom where we are planted,’” says Brendan. And bloom he has. With those encouraging words to spur him, and with an outlook of abundance, he has grown to be successful in all that interests him.

With each move, his parents have modeled for him and encouraged him to get involved in his community through not just school but through volunteering and sports. He has done that, with involvement throughout high school in student leadership. He has served as student

body co-president and become a member of the National Honor Society. In the community, he has achieved Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts, which is an achievement that represents hours and hours of learning and community service. This is his senior year, and he plays varsity football and baseball. His favorite subjects include math and science, which allow him to find quantifiable solutions to problems with evidence to back it up. He’s a straight-A student. Throughout his academic career, Brendan has been encouraged by different teachers. Mrs. Kenya Houston, his AP language and composition teacher, has been especially impactful on his education. She has helped him to become a better writer, which has positively impacted all his other subjects, and he feels as if he’s learned a lot. Looking forward, Brendan is inspired by his dad, who serves as an orthopedic surgeon trained in sports medicine. Watching him work has been rewarding for Brendan. Because of that inspiration he is considering going into the medical field. To do so, he has goals of going to college, and hopes to get a scholarship to play baseball at the school of his choice. He is currently reaching out to schools and coaches to see what opportunities might be open to him. Until then, he will spend his year not just focusing on academics but snowboarding and wake-surfing in his spare time. Thankfully, there’s lots of water and snow in Washington!

tella Demianiw is a 17-year-old senior at Peninsula High School. She has grown up in the peninsula, attending all the various local schools and benefiting from the community. She began playing soccer at 4, which she has been consistent in and still excels in currently. At Peninsula High School she is the varsity captain of the soccer team, but she also plays competitively year-round through the Kitsap Alliance soccer club. In school she excels, with acceptance into the National Honor Society and acknowledgement as the Student of the Quarter a couple of times. Her other scholastic interests include yearbook, for which she is the editor in chief. Her favorite subject is math for its predictable outcomes and practical applications. She also enjoys how each part of math builds off of other parts. That, combined with a love for her local community (she loves to be with kids), has her shooting for a future in education.

“I have always wanted to be a math teacher because I love working with kids and have always wanted to share my love for math with them,” says Stella. If she doesn’t end up working with kids, she’s hoping for a future in finance. Math has a variety of applications, and Stella is allowing herself more than one option going forward.

To achieve those goals, she is looking into a four-year university. She has already been accepted to University of Arizona but is also looking elsewhere, like San Diego State University. For instance, Ms. Beloate taught her to keep an open mind and to look [at] the positive aspects of life. Mr. Pratz taught her to keep pushing in order to overcome obstacles. Her math teacher, Mrs. Demianiw, helped her develop her love for math throughout her education. and concerts. Corey understands the importance of emphasizing community involvement in students, who are encouraged to pursue music beyond high school by the example of the adults in the ensembles. Corey’s story is not unique in that when you get involved in the music society, the connections between people and music open up. From one connection comes another, and with collaboration comes greater cohesion and encouragement to pursue other variations of musical interest. The Narrows Music Society is about making those connections, meeting a great group of people, and expanding those musical opportunities. Every community benefits from an investment in the arts of music and performance, the sharing of talents, which reaches the communal heart.

“For me, the Narrows Music Society opened up opportunities,” says Corey Berman, president of the community board. Corey has a music background, and when he first moved to Gig Harbor he started playing with the Pacific Orchestra. For that ensemble he was playing piano. But upon talking to the trumpet player, he heard about Harbor Winds and soon became involved in that ensemble. There he met the lead of the ensemble, Eric Swanson, who is passionate about including kids in community ensembles

Along that same spirit of inclusion, the Narrows Music Society of Gig Harbor focuses on and provides an opportunity and venue for student performance. Opportunities such as Harbor Winds focus on young artists who play with the ensemble. During the performance, a high school soloist is selected to play for the enjoyment of the greater community. They also make a point of offering community invitations to enjoy experienced musicians, musicians who often have a heart themselves for community

he Narrows Music Society of Gig Harbor recently celebrated 10 years of community music. The music society, founded by Sheryl Clark, began as a community of musicians gathered to fill a gap. There is a lot of musical talent in the local area but no opportunity to play in the community. The ensemble Harbor Winds was formed and began to perform in community concerts. Eventually a community board was formed, made up of active community members, players and music lovers. Today, Sheryl still serves on the community board as secretary and is very much involved in all of its community activities. But now, with so much community involvement, the Narrows Music Society of Gig Harbor has grown to be so much more than how it began.

In October, the society held its yearly auditions, with rehearsals beginning later in the month. They really do want as many musicians as possible, which lends to the group’s versatility to play at various community venues. In the Narrows Music Society of Gig Harbor, there is room for everyone. The music society also supports other various ensembles that are a collaboration between musicians of various genres, and who play for a variety of community celebrations and events. They are not just looking for one kind of musician from one kind of genre. They just want to create a community of music. Examples of such ensembles include the ceremonial band, which plays traditional music for time-honored gatherings and meetings (think visiting ambassador or city traditions), rather than celebrations. There’s the Dixieland band, which is a folk band that plays for festivals. There’s a swing band. The music society has the ability to put together all kinds of compilations depending on the event or activity due to their connection with the community’s network of musicians, many which fall under the umbrella of the Narrows Music Society. This year we can look forward to a lot of activity from the Narrows Music Society of Gig Harbor, activity which was sorely missed in previous years, solidifying the very real need for the collaboration of arts and performance, and the community and sense of wellness that it brings. Harbor Winds does three to four concerts a year. There’s also the solo saxophonist in May. There’s the addition of new musicians and the rehearsals that follow. There’s the very welcome collaboration of the society with students and schools, with many looking forward to this year’s high school soloist. To stay up to date on all events, concerts, ways to get involved and community collaboration, the Narrows Music Society can be found at NarrowsMusicSociety.org and on Facebook, twitter and Instagram.

The Batana Project Gig Harbor celebrates its Croatian roots

b y R A C H E L K E L LY

T

he Batana Project is a celebration of a history that continues to thrive as a vital piece of our community culture. It began between the organizers of the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend and Mike Vlahovich. However, the project was put aside during the pandemic, due to the complexity of community support and international travel. The re-ignition of the project came about due to the longtime kinship between Vlahovich and his friends in Gig Harbor. Gig Harbor has a long-standing history of Croatian immigration. Several well-known families can trace their roots to Croatia, such as the Skansies, Babich and the Gilich families. These families were integral to the establishment of boatbuilding and commercial fishing here in Gig Harbor. Vlahovich’s family comes from Sumartin, which is a town on the Croatian island of Brač. However, he grew up in Gig Harbor. He moved to Croatia after meeting his wife Lovorka, establishing the Croatian NGO Maritima Educare. Maritima Educare is a European nonprofit that mentors its young students in traditional maritime heritage and modern maritime culture. They do this through youth and young adult maritime education programs and the restoration of boats. The building of the batana is not only an international endeavor, but it represents the thriving kinship and historical heritage between Gig Harbor and Croatia. The batana itself is modeled after the boats built traditionally for the Venetian Lagoon. This keel-less flat-bottom boat is typical of the particular needs of the North Adriatic. This regional boat assists larger fishing boats and highlights the particular cultural needs of

that community. The building of the boat began from paper, with the only instructions being a historical rendering of the boat. The actual schematics had to be reconstructed and drawn, and eventually rendered through the knowledge of experienced craftsmen. The wood used to make the batana is recycled old-growth fir, which was donated by Pacific Northwest Timber of Port Townsend, making the wood used as old as the boat’s history. Mike Vlahovich worked long hours with volunteers such as Jonathan Cunningham and Mike Leach. From Croatia, Vlahovich’s wife Lovorka and her two children assisted with the finishing and eventual celebration of the batana, lending their own studied experience. Tomislav Solic, a civil engineer, flew in with the Vlahovich family to assist in the construction of the mast and rudder. And of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of Gig Harbor’s The Boat Shop. From its

48

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

early beginnings to the hoisting of the lugsail, the building of the batana was a study in cultural heritage and a practice of friendship. At its completion, the batana was celebrated at The Boat Shop by the offer of free tours of The Boat Shop’s historically renovated boat, The Veteran, and lunch. Champagne was broken, traditional Croatian music was played live, and all in all it was a fun community event. The batana was dropped in the water and rowed in the bay by Mike and Lovorka Vlahovich, with Tomislav at the oars. From there, the boat was showcased at the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend a few days later. Perhaps now the boat will be burned? That would be traditional to Croatian culture, who once a year burn a boat in memory of the Pope’s boat, which once burned in the Adriatic. However, a boat burning is highly unlikely here in the waters around Gig Harbor. The boat will most likely be put on display for local enjoyment, a showcase of lasting friendship between Gig Harbor, Washington, and Sumartin in Brač, Croatia.

T

here’s a time for everything, even during the holidays. There’s a time for family, and there’s time for celebration. There’s time to decorate, time to get out the door, and a time for those holiday traditions. There’s even time for some of that spiced eggnog that is only available seasonally. But whether you will truly have time or not comes down to whether you are able to keep a healthy balance this holiday season. But with the holidays comes the pull of activities that are sure to yank you right off track to enjoying the season. There can be so many expectations during the holidays; expectations from others but also expectations that we put on ourselves. It can take a lot of effort to keep one’s priorities straight. This year, prioritize yourself, your family, your work and the holidays in a way that makes the most sense for the things that matter most. Prioritizing yourself is often the hardest to accomplish during the holiday season. However, for many of us, “me time” should be the first thing we do. Not because you should be selfish, as if that’s even possible. Self-care doesn’t mean that we have to sacrifice making sure others are cared for. It’s just a fact that if you don’t fill your cup, you won’t have anything to give. Everything suffers when we don’t prioritize selfcare, especially in situations where you may be maxed out. Sometimes prioritizing yourself might mean waking up 15 minutes early every day to enjoy some extra silence over your favorite hot morning beverage. Sometimes it might mean organizing your day in such a way that you can have an extra 10 minutes at the end of every day to just be still. Sometimes it might mean going on a short walk or making a point to take a few hours once a week doing something you love. Little by little, consistent self-care chips away at the stress that has a tendency to build up. Prioritizing yourself might mean that someone else around you might need to adjust their routine, such as going to bed earlier or making sure they’re around during the time that you’ve hedged out for yourself. Sometimes they might be upset about this (kids, this is you), but it’s important that everyone in every household shares the load of responsibility, so that each individual is cared for—including you. This might take some conversation, and it might take some compromise, but it’s worth it.

Doing things this holiday season with those loved ones should be top on the list. Prioritizing your family is probably next on most people’s list. Or maybe prioritizing those that you consider to be like family. There are just some activities and some plans that can’t be rescheduled this time of year, and missing them would take away from joy. It can be easy to under-appreciate those people closest to us, because we feel secure that they will always be there. Regardless, every relationship needs attention. Doing things this holiday season with those loved ones should be top on the list, as they are sure to bring the most joy this time of year. Usually, however, there is more than one loved one. Many people find themselves split between many different familial expectations from both sides. These activities can sometimes clash, so communication is key here. It’s no fun if you spread yourself too thin. Be sure to communicate what you can and can’t do for your own sanity, and let the rest be what it will be. 62

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

Prioritizing work where it should be during the holidays often means that not everything is done to perfection. However, it will be done the best you possibly can do, and that will have to be enough. Making money is all well and good, but it means very little if you have no time to use it. Especially during the time of year where money and time can be used so well. Do what needs to be done, hit your deadlines and demolish that project while you’re working. But when you’re off, you’re off. If you truly can’t get away, turn everything off. Give yourself a staycation, at home, and unplug from whatever pulls you where you don’t need to be. This might mean that you might have to cut back in some ways, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labor. There is a reason that work is not prioritized at the top of the list; it’s just not the most important thing.

It Wasn’t All Bad HONORING YOUR MARRIAGE WHEN IT ENDS THROUGH THE RIGHT PROCESS

b y F E L I C I A S O L E I L , AT TO R N E Y/ M E D I ATO R

“We want to transition out of our marriage more thoughtfully.” “We owe it to ourselves to do this peacefully.” “Not all of it was bad.”

T

hese are reasons I’ve recently heard from my divorce mediation clients when asked why they are choosing mediation as opposed to litigation for their separation and divorce, particularly in longer-term marriages.

Most of these couples report lengthy discord during the last few years of their marriage, multiple attempts in counseling, and the continued inability to resolve their conflict leading to the demise of their intimate partnership. And yet, these same couples also value the underlying “ties that bind,” including a shared history, children, grandchildren and extended family. Whether they also report the goal of remaining “friends,” they at least want to remain “friendly” and have a respectful and cordial relationship with one another as they move forward. And they don’t want the legal process to undermine that. That’s not to say that these couples don’t initiate mediation under a lot of stress, distrust and fear. What they seem to be looking for is a safe space to recognize those negative emotions exist, without having those emotions fuel settlement-related decisions they may regret later. This can be particularly true during major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Often, long-term couples continue to value time spent with adult children, grandchildren and extended families during holiday get-togethers. Sometimes, newly separating and divorcing couples will use the holidays for a “soft exit,” whereby they get everyone used to the idea that they won’t be a couple anymore, while being able to demonstrate that everything will be okay.

64 64

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

Couples in this situation are often catalysts for change in how others can see themselves moving forward, managing conflict in a healthy and emotionally mature way without disrupting everyone else around them. I like to remind these clients that they can “set the example” for peacefully moving through this major life transition. Of course, clients may select mediation without such lofty intentions, and merely want to get through their transition with less cost, in less time, and more efficiently, so they can put the marriage behind them and move on. However, a common theme in these instances is to not let the process interfere with these goals, while using an intermediary (the mediator) to keep them on track and hold that space. Helping clients hold a safe space from the outset begins with establishing mutually agreed-upon parameters from which to proceed, including agreements to abide by many of the same ground rules they would have to follow if asking for court intervention. Therefore, these clients can have those same protections and assurances, but those protections and assurances come from a place of accountability to one another and the mediator, rather than from a place of an authority figure telling them what to do. Using mediation, they can work on rebuilding trust one step at a time, and these small successes often lead to more thoughtfully and peacefully achieved settlements and resolutions all the way around. And such resolutions can help remind the parties that “it wasn’t all bad.” Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via Zoom videoconference or phone.

o you picture yourself owning a new home, starting a business, or retiring comfortably? These are a few of the financial goals that may be important to you, and each comes with a price tag attached. That’s where financial planning comes in. Financial planning is a process that can help you target your goals by evaluating your whole financial picture, then outlining strategies that are tailored to your individual needs and available resources.

insurance coverage, your investment portfolio, your tax exposure and your estate plan. • Establish and prioritize financial goals and time frames for achieving these goals. • Implement strategies that address your current financial weaknesses and build on your financial strengths. • Choose specific products and services that are tailored to help meet your financial objectives.* • Monitor your plan, making adjustments as your goals, time frames or circumstances change.

Why is financial planning important?

Staying on track

A comprehensive financial plan serves as a framework for organizing the pieces of your financial picture. With a financial plan in place, you’ll be better able to focus on your goals and understand what it will take to reach them.

The financial planning process doesn’t end once your initial plan has been created. Your plan should generally be reviewed at least once a year to make sure that it’s up to date. It’s also possible that you’ll need to modify your plan due to changes in your personal circumstances or the economy. Here are some of the events that might trigger a review of your financial plan:

One of the main benefits of having a financial plan is that it can help you balance competing financial priorities. A financial plan will clearly show you how your financial goals are related—for example, how saving for your children’s college education might impact your ability to save for retirement. Then you can use the information you’ve gleaned to decide how to prioritize your goals, implement specific strategies, and choose suitable products or services. Best of all, you’ll know that your financial life is headed in the right direction. The financial planning process Creating and implementing a comprehensive financial plan generally involves working with financial professionals to: • Develop a clear picture of your current financial situation by reviewing your income, assets and liabilities, and evaluating your

• Your goals or time horizons change • You experience a life-changing event such as marriage, the birth of a child, health problems or a job loss • You have a specific or immediate financial planning need (e.g., drafting a will, managing a distribution from a retirement account, paying long-term care expenses) • Your income or expenses substantially increase or decrease • Your portfolio hasn’t performed as expected • You’re affected by changes to the economy or tax laws Securities and advisory services offered through LPL Financial, a registered investment advisor. The brain changes leading to Alzheimer’s disease start decades before the onset of memory loss. In fact, cognitive decline has been demonstrated in women in their 20s with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)—a manifestation of insulin resistance. Glucose and the brain Though the brain represents only 2 percent of the average adult’s body weight, it demands 20 percent of the body’s energy. There are certain areas of the brain that require glucose for fuel, and insulin is the signaling hormone that determines where energy goes and which cells are going to be fed. In Alzheimer’s disease, it is well recognized that the brain loses its ability to metabolize glucose. Even though there may be abundant glucose available in the bloodstream, the insulinresistant brain cannot utilize that glucose as a fuel, similar to what happens in the rest of the body in type 2 diabetes. This insulin resistance is so prevalent in Alzheimer’s disease that many researchers have called Alzheimer’s “type 3 diabetes.” Management of Alzheimer’s disease Health care is failing miserably with dementia,

with Alzheimer’s drug trials sporting a 99.6 percent failure rate. An approach addressing multiple lifestyle factors including diet, exercise, and cognitive training, however, can improve or maintain cognitive function in atrisk elderly individuals. An alternative fuel for the brain: ketones Though the Alzheimer’s brain cannot efficiently metabolize glucose, it still can metabolize ketones as an energy source. In fact, there’s some evidence that ketones may be the preferred energy source for the brain. When glucose and insulin levels are low, fat can be broken down into fatty acids, which can then be converted to ketones. Ketones are a simpler, cleaner, and more efficient fuel source than glucose. It appears that ketones improve energy utilization, signaling, and reduce inflammation. Furthermore, ketones stabilize brain networks, whereas glucose destabilizes them. A study in 2021 showed that individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease had improvement in daily function and quality of life when on a ketogenic diet, compared to a low-fat diet. Instead of looking at Alzheimer’s as something that we can’t do anything about, we now have evidence that nutritional interventions are effective at preventing and reversing cognitive decline.

he savior for patients is also the bane of medical offices–insurance. As an eye care provider, I have to navigate both medical insurance and vision discount plans (VDPs). Because VDP rates that are paid to offices have stayed stagnant for over 20 years, more and more offices do not accept these plans. I’ve gleaned some knowledge after years of working with various insurance and discount plans, and I’d like to share them with you. 1. There is no such thing as “eye insurance.” There is medical insurance (such as BlueCross, Medicare, 1st Choice) and VDP (such as VSP, EyeMed, Davis). 2. VDPs will direct you to corporate chains and offices they own and to buy their owned frame lines, using their owned labs. Any amount you pay only deepens their pockets more. 3. You don’t have to go where they tell you to go! Don’t let them dictate your vision or medical care! They are trying to spend the least possible, not pay for the best care you deserve.

4. VDPs only discount the glasses exam and the glasses. They do not cover any medical care and do not cover discussion or recommendations about dry eyes, cataracts, diabetes and more. 5. Medicare does cover medical eye care! If you wonder if you have cataracts, or if they’ve gotten worse, or need a diabetic eye exam, or

have dry eyes, and lots more, we can often bill most of the visit to your Medicare plan. 6. Do you think you are covered by your Medicare Advantage plan? Beware. A colleague shared this: “Medicare Advantage plans sucker patients into joining with their low/no rates but make it difficult to obtain medical care utilizing roadblocks like gatekeepers, restricted networks, mandatory pre-approval, and yearly changes in the contract provisions. Every Medicare-age doctor I know has traditional Medicare and a supplement, not a replacement Medicare Advantage plan.” 7. Plans and types of benefits change all the time, and plan information relayed to us is not always accurate. The coverage you had last year is probably different this year. 8. Please give us your plan information before the appointment, so we have time to find your benefits and address issues before you show up. We cannot access benefits instantly when you walk in. 9. Medical billing is complex, and we have rules to follow; don’t be angry with the offices that are following the rules. 10. If you get a bill from your provider, it is because the plan gave us incorrect information and now you owe more money than what was estimated at your visit.

WANT MORE ZEST, GRATITUDE AND HOPE IN YOUR LIFE? Get curious. How present are you? b y J E N N I F E R ‘ TA Z ’ VA ZQ U E Z

H

ow satisfied are you with your life? Have you ever let fear or self-doubt keep you from doing what you really wanted? The holiday season is an excellent time to reflect by focusing on a “precious gift” that helps you feel happier and have more gratitude and energy in life. A simple and profound book “The Present,” by Spencer Johnson, is a parable about the importance of perspective and how it influences our attitude and level of satisfaction. In the book, a young man is tirelessly looking for (and failing to find) the most valuable gift a person can receive. The gift holds the key to personal happiness and lifelong success. Hint: It isn’t a genie in a bottle instantly granting three wishes. Curious yet? According to Johnson, the key is to focus on the present (appreciating what we have now), creating our own happiness, learning from the past, and being open to creating the future. When we are not present, we let the past and future hold our attention, contributing to our disempowerment, leading to a cycle of expectations, criticisms and dissatisfaction— all of which impacts how we think, feel and act. Being present is also tied to research showing a direct correlation between our overall wellbeing and our level of gratitude, hope and zest (energy) in life. How?

Gratitude. A regular gratitude practice can boost happiness by 25 percent! Even practicing gratitude a couple times a week, by listing three to five things you’re grateful for, is enough. Hope. Hope consists of a belief that your future can and will be better than your present, focusing on the present process because there are multiple paths toward your future. Accepting there will be obstacles in your life, facing them, and taking action is the path to future success. Zest. Your energy level can be regularly replenished via the quality of your fundamentals: eating, sleeping, meditation and movement. For example, according to Kelly McGonigal’s research, movement is how your brain and body encourage you to participate in life. When we get less than 5,649 daily steps, it induces feelings of anxiety/depression and decreases our satisfaction with life! As you head into the season of giving, reflection and new beginnings, ask yourself: “What am I grateful for?” “How hopeful am I?” “How is my energy level?” Lastly, “What can I adjust?” When you do, you’ll begin to discover the precious gift of the present.

Temperatures may be dropping

as the days of winter unfold, but the urge to bundle up doesn’t have to mean cooling down your sense of style. This winter, reimagine your wardrobe with cozier, multi-functional versions of the fall pieces you already love. Playing with color, texture and volume can enhance your winter look, enhance your silhouette and maintain your sense of style—without sacrificing your temperature or comfort! If it feels nearly impossible to maintain your fashion sense throughout the coldest months of the year, these few simple tips and trends can help you find the right balance of staying warm and looking your best, all season long. Lean into long layers, chunky accessories and statement-making pieces for the ultimate winter wardrobe refresh! Turn Up the Texture with Knits. While winter has always been the prime time for knitwear to shine, this year’s fashion trends see knits in even more varieties, and paired with everything. From the traditional everyday cardigans to the trendier two-piece sets, knit vests and lengthy sweater dresses, knits will be found everywhere all winter long and are more stylish and bold than ever before. When styling yours, play with fun accessories and creative layering (think multiple knit pieces within a single outfit, or pairing contrasting fabrics like wool and tulle) to take your knits from everyday winter wear to standout winter fashion statement. Sweater (Dress) Weather. Cold temperatures don’t require laying your dress obsession to rest until the spring. This winter’s dress trends are full of cozy, long-sleeved styles, including lengthy, blanket-like sweater dresses, soft day-to-night velvets and turtlenecks for extra-chic coverage.

This winter’s dress trends are full of cozy, longsleeved styles.

The maxi-length dress isn’t reserved for warmer seasons, either—it’s here to stay, with plenty of this season’s sweater dresses embracing the full-length style that offers plenty of protection against the cold. From floor-sweeping gowns for special holiday occasions, to the maxi sweater dresses that rival actual blankets with their plush fabrics and lengthy coverage, cozy and dramatic length provides even more reason to embrace the winter dress! Step Up in Platform Boots. The heightened heels of 2022’s shoe trends are here to stay for the winter. The good news? This year’s shoes are not only taller but thicker as well— think chunky platform, ‘90s-inspired Mary Janes, easy-towalk-in wedges, and solid, statement-making, yet highly wearable, boots of all kinds. This holiday season, leave the narrow heels at home and embrace all the chunky wedges and loafers that are easy to wear for the long haul and

highly holiday-occasion friendly. That’s right, your fall loafers don’t have to be put away for the season—they can be paired with long jeans, chunky knits and plenty of layers for continued wear into the cold season. Go Weatherproof. Chunky, platform boots are the name of the shoe game in 2022, and winter is no exception. This year’s tall, thick boots will do more than elevate your winter style—they’ll offer essential protection as you make your way through the elements of winter weather. This winter is the perfect time to find those ideal boots that can do both—that is, both amplify your look while keeping your feet dry and warm through the season’s wet, snowy days. Finding this balance is possible with this year’s influx of sleek boots that maintain a stylish appearance but are made from materials that make them discreetly weatherproof. Playing with color, texture and volume can enhance your winter look, Amazon Fashion have more options than ever before for winter footwear that is as functional as it is stylish. Keep Your Fall Shackets. Shackets are a key fall-to-winter transitional piece—the perfect blend of shirt and jacket is warm, wearable and easily layered. As an easy way to enhance the appeal and the “put-together” quality of any outfit, shackets are typically oversized enough to wear over base-layer knits and cozy tops, even this year’s trending chunky knits and turtlenecks. Keep wearing your fall shackets all season long as a stylish, ultra-comfortable layering piece. Stay Colorful. While pieces in muted neutrals and dark tones typically take over in the winter months, this year’s cold season is embracing deeper, brighter colors. It’s time to lean into deep, rich colors like bright greens and magentas, whether it’s a subtle color pop from a statement-making piece or accessory or a bold, monochrome set (think bright tailored suits and highlighter-bright cocktail dresses), this season’s fashion color palettes make it easier than ever to battle the drab winter blues. Embrace Statement Shoulders and Silhouettes. This winter’s trends are in full support of maintaining a sleek silhouette, between tailored blazers and ultra-fitted waistlines. Keep your oversized blazers from autumn’s trends and layer them over your knits, long skirts and dresses to maintain a fitted, strong-shouldered silhouette. As an added bonus, wider shoulders tend to visually slim and accentuate the waist. Another waist-friendly trend this winter? The popular corset fit, seen across this year’s runways, built into the silhouettes of everything from unique fitted tops to flattering pant suits and dresses. Keep this trend in mind when planning for holiday parties and outings—the corset style tends to be universally flattering and can easily accentuate your look for a special occasion!

The Moxi Laser by Sciton is a non-ablative, fractional laser resurfacing treatment developed specifically to treat uneven pigment, pores, fine lines, redness, scarring and texture. Moxi can aid to correct problematic areas of blemishes or scarring and help to regenerate the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production, while also improving overall tone and texture of skin. With Moxi you can correct uneven pigmentation and improve skin tone and texture without the recovery or downtime associated with more aggressive laser procedures. The main benefits of Moxi are a brighter, more renewed looking skin appearance and pigment reduction. We always hear the same thing after a treatment, “My skin looks so much more polished, and my pores look smaller!” This laser stimulates collagen and speeds up cell

turnover, giving you those incredible results. Moxi is suitable for all skin tones and age. It is specifically used to treat melasma, a very common skin condition in women that, in the past, was challenging to treat safely. Moxi + BBL: The unbeatable treatment pairing for total skin renewal Moxi and BroadBand Light (BBL) are two advanced skin treatments that pair perfectly for dramatic results. When used together, these two treatments pack a synergistic punch of skin renewal and radiance with ease. They both heat the deeper skin layers to initiate fresh collagen and elastin production to the area, which stimulates the body’s natural healing process. Moxi is designed to deliver dramatic tonal and textural improvements to your face, while BBL works well at repairing rosacea, resolving red spots, and improving skin texture. Together, laser and light therapy form a cohesive strategy at reversing and delaying the effects of aging on our skin. You can absolutely have beautiful skin! It’s never too late to start treatments! I understand it can be intimidating trying to decide what is best and how to start. Booking a consultation will put your mind at ease, answer your questions and really give you the information to proceed. When choosing a provider, experience is incredibly important. If you’re looking to get your skin ready for the holidays, plan early, as it is a very busy time for aesthetics clinics.

Business. Leadership. Coaching. Who is your wingman?

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

S

pecializing in coming alongside business owners, entrepreneurs, executives and other individuals who are in need of a “sounding board” in their life or business to bounce ideas off, Wingman Associates works hard to help people make the next best decision to keep them growing and moving forward. “Whether it’s business or personal, we don’t think anyone should be alone or make decisions in a vacuum. A true wingman stays with you until the mission is complete— and that’s part of our commitment,” says Mike Carver, owner. After nearly 40 years in corporate America in various positions, Mike retired and started Wingman Associates in January of 2021. The name honors his father, who flew F-105s in Vietnam for the Air Force, where he served for 30 years. “He epitomized what it was to be a wingman— always had your back, always teaching, supporting, and seemed to have a purpose–even well past retirement.” The focus at Wingman Associates is bringing transformational change that delivers results to small-business owners and executives who may need assistance in a variety of areas: from sales, sales training and HR challenges to financial and ROI analysis, marketing and branding awareness, business development, operational efficiency and process mapping within an organization. “We also have added some team members whose expertise is in personal development and coaching from adolescents and young adults to experienced business leaders,” adds Mike. “In all cases, we focus on delivering desired outcomes by assessing and understanding the current state, trying to isolate and work backward from symptom to root cause, so we can make appropriate recommendations.” He goes on to acknowledge that mentors, coaches and teachers are available—but it’s up to us to find them and seek their wisdom and knowledge. “If we can replace hubris, pride and ego with an open mind and a willingness to just talk about what the next best direction might look like together, poor outcomes can be avoided.” It’s important to find an advisor who is experienced, transparent, objective, and has their client’s best interest at heart. “Someone who is willing to tell the hard truth sometimes, knowing that it’s the end result that matters,” Mike affirms. What motivates Mike and his Wingman Associates team is when a client recognizes the value they bring, and as Mike shares, that can only happen if his team stays true to who they are and remain in their wheelhouse. He adds that “truth and transparency go a long way.”

With Wingman, clients will find an approach that is not only flexible but individualized, basing the frequency of client engagements on the need and sense of urgency the client has. In addition, Mike and his team never charge clients while getting to know them, as they are aware that it takes time to build relationships and trust. “We invest that time because it’s impossible to know up front exactly what they may need or if we’re even the right firm to accommodate them,” says Mike. “We want to be compensated for the results we deliver and not just the effort put in. Both are valuable, but everyone’s needs and cash flow are different, hence our flexibility.” Once Mike has established the client’s need and his ability to meet them where they are and work on a solution together, it’s time to figure out what works best for them. “We designed our organization to be in the best position to meet the needs of our clients versus immediately putting them

in a box and moving them through a program or process just to get them to the next level,” he states. “We want to be different from other coaching or consulting firms, so we concentrate on the outcomes the client desires instead of a program someone thinks they should be on within their system.” Mike also has a podcast, Stop Winging It, which is part of the company’s branding. He calls it “a source of joy and fun.” During these podcasts, he speaks with past associates and a variety of business leaders, as they delve into the heart of their journey. “Most of the folks we interview are business owners, leaders or entrepreneurs who have a great story to tell and want to share their challenges and successes,” says Mike. “It is our hope that by sharing, others will learn from those who have gone before them and better understand why we’re all in this together and can be wingmen to each other.” Mike is an elder in his church and shares he has a heart for the men in his community. “There are not enough opportunities for men to get together, learning and serving side by side, which ties us together and reminds us that we are not alone,” Mike says. He has been leading annual Men’s Retreats through his church and other organizations to help bring men together to learn from each other and remind them that life isn’t meant to be done alone. In addition, he heads service projects to support the community at large. Mike has his own wingman, his wife Jane of 40 years. They have lived in the Northwest for the last 25 years, have four children who reside up and down the West Coast, and two grandchildren. If you’re in need of a wingman to help you on your mission, Mike and his team are ready to answer your call. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

A Commitment to Clients Veteran-owned mortgage company puts customers first

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

F

ounded in September 1988 by Jeffrey W. Carr, Northwest Mortgage Services, local and veteran owned, has been committed to its borrowers from day one. After 34 years serving the community, Jeff announced his retirement in September of this year, passing along the baton to Abel Hernandez, who joined Jeff at Northwest Mortgage Services in February 2018, and Abel’s wife Tracie. Abel and Tracie are now the proud owners of Northwest Mortgage Services and will continue to operate with the high level of integrity of that of their predecessor. Abel adds that his desire is to continue to operate a business that puts the needs of his clients before his own. “We have a fiduciary duty to the client, and that is what drives our daily decisions,” affirms Abel. Jeff, who has more than 34 years of mortgage experience, also has a strong accounting background from his previous CPA experience. “Working under Jeff has allowed me to gain knowledge faster than most due to his experience,” shares Abel. “He’s lived through many market fluctuations, and getting firsthand knowledge has helped us respond to the market a lot quicker. “His experience has allowed me to better serve my clients. Having a mentor like Jeff has been like having a walking dictionary, professor, mortgage reference all in one. He has taught me that not all mortgages are the same, and having the right knowledge is essential in servicing the client well.” Providing clients with residential mortgages (purchase and refinance), including conventional, VA, FHA USDA and non-conforming loans, Northwest Mortgage Services sets themselves apart from the rest in numerous ways: They have access to wholesale lenders, which have some of the lowest rates in the nation; the business is veteran owned, as both Jeff and Abel are Army veterans; they are rooted in the community; mortgages are their sole purpose; not tied down to any one lender, allowing them to shop the mortgage that meets their customers’ goals; close loans faster; invest into the community by supporting other local businesses; work during non-regular hours such as nights and weekends as needed; and Jeff served as the president for the Washington Association of Mortgage Brokers. “The most fulfilling part of every mortgage is helping people achieve their goals—in many cases, we help individuals surpass their goals. For example, we have closed loans other institutions couldn’t due to a lack of product offering, credit restrictions, or greater costs,” says Abel. “It’s also very fulfilling to re-establish trust in local businesses. When borrowers learn of our ethics firsthand, they leave grateful.”

Abel and Tracie have called Gig Harbor home since February of 2015, embracing the small-town feel. “You constantly run into people you know around the community events,” states Abel. “Knowing the people that you help in your own community is satisfying, and there’s a sense of accountability. Supporting other local businesses also makes us feel good about being local. There’s a unity which is similar to our Army days.”

In addition to the work he does through Northwest Mortgage Services, Abel is a veterancertified peer counselor and has volunteered in organizations that have important meaning to him: Warriors Breaking Bread (WarriorsBreakingBread.org), All American Assistance Dogs (AAADogs.org) and the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation (PTSDFoundation.org). “For Both Jeff and Abel, volunteering with such organizations in the past or in the future is important, because they have aimed to serve members of the veteran and first responder community with the intent to help them achieve healing and growth,” shares Tracie. “Abel has first handedly experienced the benefits of what these organizations provide.” If you are looking for a mortgage brokerage who will work on your behalf, with your goals and best interest in mind, Abel is ready to answer the call to serve.

“Having a mentor like Jeff has been like having a walking dictionary, professor, mortgage reference all in one. He has taught me that not all mortgages are the same, and having the right knowledge is essential in servicing the client well.” GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL nov/dec 2022

SURREY Surrey, British Columbia, is just across the United States border into Canada. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the Metro Vancouver area. In the area known by Canadians as “the Lower Mainland,” it stretches from Tidal Flats in the west all the way to the Fraser Valley in the east. The Surrey Spice Trail will take you across six neighborhoods to showcase the vibrant and diverse foodie scene. Discover strip-mall dives to high-end dining and everything in between. Surrey is known as “The City of Parks,” and over 50 percent of Surrey is greenspace, which includes farms, golf courses, parks, gardens and urban forests. There are so many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Head to White Rock, one of Surrey’s neighboring communities, to enjoy views for miles and a large sand tidal beach. Stroll the waterfront with its cute shops, ice cream parlors and restaurants. Saunter down the longest pier in Canada. With Surrey situated on the Pacific Flyway, a north-south migratory bird route, the area is very popular with birdwatchers. With over 200 species of birds, it is easy to see why. Cycling is a loved activity, and there are plenty of hiking and walking trails throughout the city.

EAT

The Surrey Spice Trail is a must do while visiting this area. The diversity of food offerings gives you the opportunity to experience a variety of international cuisine. You’ll find family owned businesses sharing their traditional meals cooked with love. You’ll also find well-known chefs at places like My Shanti, where Vikram VI works his magic. The options can be overwhelming, so visit the Spice Trail website to locate restaurants on an interactive map. Tapping on a restaurant will give you a description of the restaurant experience, photos of their signature dishes, and tips. Chacha’s is a North Indian restaurant that offers a special dish just on weekends. This very popular, bright, modern eatery will have you feeling like you stepped into a Bollywood movie, as the music and aromas of this unique cuisine envelop you as you walk to your table. For an appetizer, try the Gol Gappay Shots. This darling dish is presented in a miniature cart like the ones you would see on the streets of India. A crispy, round, hollow shell known as a puri is stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas and chutneys. You take it and add the tangy-flavored water it is served with and pop the whole thing into your mouth. So fun. Order the Paneer Kulcha, only available on weekends. Kulcha is a special seasoned Indian flatbread that is stuffed (choose from a variety of meats or veggies) and crispy. The dish is served with chickpeas and raita, a classic Indian yogurt sauce. THE SPICE TRAIL DiscoverSurreyBC.com CHACHA’S Chachas.ca

The Civic Hotel in downtown Surrey is part of the Autograph Collection for Marriott and is a gorgeous hotel in a central location for exploring the area. The rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic city views. After a busy day exploring, head to the heated rooftop pool to relax. It is just steps away from the SkyTrain, which provides transportation in the Greater Vancouver area. The hotel is walking distance to Holland Park. Make sure to view local artist Glen Anderson’s Art Nouveau-style water fountain. Seasonally enjoy the gardens, which start with spring tulips and then summer roses. Shop at the Central City Shopping Center, a large mall that is also walking distance from the Civic Hotel. The Holiday Inn and Suites, located in the Cloverdale neighborhood, is perfect for families. It is not far from the US-Canada border and the Peace Arch. The hotel has family friendly rooms and an indoor pool open year-round. DO

Head out to Mud Bay Park to access the Boundary Bay Trail. This lovely, scenic walk will take you along the shores of Boundary Bay. This area is one of the most important bird areas in Canada and the best place to see shorebirds. Take the 3-kilometers-long nature trail (you can find a brochure at the website). Look for seals at high tide in the waves. At low tide, birds flock to the mudflats and eelgrass meadows to dine. Hundreds of thousands of birds visit throughout the year; some arrive from as far away as South America. If you want to hike further or do a bike ride, the trail links up with the Dyke Trail for another 20 kilometers of shoreline ending in Boundary Bay Regional Park. Take some time to explore historic Cloverdale. This is Surrey’s birthplace, where it started out as a small farm community in 1870. Downtown Cloverdale has a business district with more than 200 shops and restaurants. Access a walking and driving tour brochure from the website. Its small-town charm and historic features were featured in the TV show “Smallville,” and it is a popular filming location. Celebrating the Holidays with Lights! 10 & 17 DECEMBER

Spirits will be bright this December with the annual Tree Lighting, Lighted Boat Parade and Lighted Car Parade by Jillian Chandler

G

ig Harbor will be shining bright come December. To kick off the holiday festivities, gather at Skansie Brothers Park at 5:30pm on December 10 for the annual Gig Harbor Tree Lighting, replete with live holiday sounds and Santa!

festive vehicles will parade through town, with the parade route beginning and ending at the MultiCare parking lot in Uptown. This year’s event will feature Santa’s Village, with local businesses and organizations setting up festive booths for the community to stop by.

A&H HIGHLIGHT

That same day, the Lighted Boat Parade, sponsored by the Gig Harbor Yacht Club, will make its way through the harbor from 5 to 7pm, shining a light along the harbor to the enjoyment of both those participating and those on shore.

The long line of brightly decorated boats, which includes fishing vessels, pleasure boats and kayaks, will parade around Gig Harbor, with the route starting in front of Arabella’s Landing. All area boaters are welcome to sail in the parade, whether or not they are members of the Gig Harbor Yacht Club. Each year continues to get better, and spectators will be treated to another amazing show. The following weekend, on December 17, marks the third annual Lighted Car Parade, another event bringing magic and excitement to the community this holiday season. Fabulously

Once again, a fundraiser will be held to support some wonderful local organizations this holiday season. Everyone in attendance is encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy, non-perishable food item(s), and/or diapers to benefit Peninsula FISH Food Bank, Food Backpacks 4 Kids and EBC Baby Corner. The fun takes place 4 to 7:30pm at the MultiCare parking lot, with the Lighted Car Parade starting at 5:30pm and returning to Uptown around 6pm, where participants will park their lighted and decorated cars for the community to enjoy. (For those businesses and organizations interested in participating in the parade or Santa’s Village, you can sign up at GigHarborKiwanis.org.) There’s nothing like celebrating the holiday season with family, friends and community in the harbor.

Funds raised from the event go on to help fund many of PHS’s after-school clubs, athletics, assembly speakers, and ASB supplies, to name a few. Admission is just $5. To find out more, visit PHSWinterfest.com.

Reservations are $350 per guest for the in-person event and $50 for the virtual link, which is good for an individual, couple or household. All proceeds from the 2022 festival and gala will support Mary Bridge Children’s Hospitals’ mission of expanding access to high-quality, child-centered care.
