Carolyn helped us buy our first home. Her expertise and years of experience were such an asset as she negotiated our deal to mutual agreement in less than 24 hours out of 17 other deals that the sellers received...WOW! We could not have made it through the tough negotiations if she hadn’t advised us how to write our offer in the best way possible to position us to the top! I highly recommend her services to anybody looking to buy or sell a home!

PUBLISHER Let’s Party! GIG HARBOR

Michelle O`Brien 262.370.3102 MKSTRENGTH.COM

The comedian Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying — Let’s Party!” I think it sums up perfectly the feeling we have when the days are warmer, the sun stays out a bit later and the trees and flowers begin to spring to life again. We have more energy, and it seems much easier to accomplish those things on our “to-do” lists. We clean out closets and dig deep to do some spring-cleaning. Spring is also a time for rebirth and change. While the New Year is often a time to vow to make certain changes in our lives, spring can inspire the same resolutions. It’s a good time to sit back and reflect on just what you want to change in this time of rebirth. Possibly you want to breathe new life into your relationships by setting aside more time to spend with those who are important to you. Or how about spending more time in nature, whether it is hiking, gardening or taking up a new outdoor activity. Many of us look forward to the farmers’ markets that come to life with fresh fruits and vegetables. This month we will be recognizing World Health Organization Day on April 7. The theme for this year is food safety. It is a good time to take inventory of the food you are eating. Where did the ingredients come from? Are they locally sourced? The World Health Organization is calling on producers, policy-makers and the public to promote food safety and ensure that our food is handled in a safe manner from farm to table. As we go forth into spring, take time to literally and figuratively stop and smell the roses. And you may want to plant some vegetables in your garden too! Whatever you do to experience the spring season, remember it’s nature’s way of saying – Let’s Party!

Artful & Vibrant Expressions A Gig Harbor high school junior expresses her love for nature through watercolors. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy Mimmi Beck.

Gig Harbor is a picturesque place that offers many opportunities for photographers and artists. There are many visual gems in Gig Harbor and much for nature enthusiasts to appreciate. Tova Beck, a young artist, specializes in reminding us of this beauty. She provides insight into the world by painting expressive and vibrant watercolors that intrinsically reflect her sensitivity and love for the natural world. Tova came early and naturally to recording the world through images. About her start in painting, she noted, “I first began to paint when I was 5 years old. Before I learned to use watercolors, I sketched and put all my drawings into a three-ring binder that I called ‘The Bird Book’ because all my first drawings were of birds. As I got older, I moved on to paint landscapes and other animals, but birds have always been my favorite.” The original “Bird Book” three-ring binder evolved into a wonderfully bright and imaginative children’s book titled, “The Girl Who Loved to Draw Birds,” by Tova and her mom, Mimmi Beck. The book is a visual masterpiece of color and creation, staying true to the form of the birds that Tova paints, yet infusing them with a vibrant life of their own. In fact, “The Girl Who

14

Loved to Draw Birds,” which was reviewed on the National Audubon’s website, was received favorably by both bird enthusiasts and art lovers. Julie Leibach of the Audubon online magazine enthusiastically remarked that Tova’s paintings in her book “sing in vibrant color.”

to protect and conceal a bustle of life. Ants wind a pathway under a fallen leaf, stopping now and then to ‘talk’ to others by brushing their antennae together. A pinhead-sized snail leaves a shimmering trail. A robin hops about, like a giant in this miniature world.”

Tova’s skill begins with her keen observation and way of seeing the natural world in great detail. When she observes her favorite bird, the great blue heron, she not only sees a moment in time, but also the heron’s behavior, movement and vocalizations. “I love the way they stand still in the water, not moving a muscle, and then in one sudden motion spring to life to strike an unsuspecting fish. Sometimes herons will fly right past my window very early in the morning and wake me up with their ugly, raucous, croaking voices.” In her paintings of herons and other birds, she captures the plush feathers and synchrony of beating wings.

Recently, Tova designed a special Hands-OnArt project for our local school district. This project, a watercolor featuring a sunset over mountains and water, was taught by volunteers to more than 3,000 Peninsula School District students. Along with the watercolor that she designed, Hands-On-Art volunteers read Tova’s book to local school children as part of the lesson. Recently, Tova and Mimmi toured Voyager Elementary to see the finished product.

Tova is able to distill her way of seeing by painting the subtle and beautiful intricacies found in the natural world. But it all begins with her perception. “I open the door and walk outside. It is a clear, bright spring day, and the breeze smells cool and fresh. I kneel and run my fingers over the delicate green tendrils of moss, packed together tightly woven like a blanket—

Tova has a love of teaching and encouraging other young, budding artists. Tova noted, “‘The Girl Who Loved to Draw Birds’ is very similar to my story of how I began painting and sharing my art with the world. I wanted to show other young artists my story, and encourage them to keep it up and to spread their love of art with others as well.” Tova’s artistic skill has not gone unnoticed. In addition to winning awards for the Tahoma

WELCOME TO SPRING! One of the best times of the year for auto maintenance! Time to get rid of winter’s gloom along with the grit and road salts, not to mention the pollen! Before hitting the road for that leisurely drive or spring break, let us help make sure your vehicle is ready to go. WE CAN

“I love the way they stand still in the water, not moving a muscle, and then in one sudden motion spring to life to strike an unsuspecting fish. Audubon Bird Drawing Contest and the Pierce County Safety Poster Contest, Tova has also had the opportunity to show her work at the Harbor History Museum’s 24-painting show. Her talent has drawn the attention of Seattle’s KING 5 news and local newspaper publications. One of the most heartening things about Tova’s work is that her art connects her to others in very tangible ways. As an animal lover, Tova is able to convey her regard for animals and nature in ways that ring true with others. Of this ability, Mimmi noted, “At a craft fair, one watercolor-card customer ran home to get photos of her pet squirrel to share with Tova because she knew Tova would

understand her love for animals. Another customer told us about a Great Blue Heron who knocked on their window. Tova has had many magical connections with others who have shared stories about their own love of animals.” We walk in the midst of the natural world, and it infuses our day. Yet, think of how much goes unseen. Tova is indeed one of many hometown gems in that she is able to distill the essence of the subjects she paints. Her beautifully rendered images form an expressive dance of line, color and soul. But most of all, they gently beckon the observer to make a personal connection to the natural world as she perceives it. In doing so, she renders her subjects, especially her bird drawings, alive in such a way that gives the impression they might fly from the page. See more of Tova’s work at www.TovaBeck.com.

Landlord Tenant Tidbits

If you are a landlord or a tenant, you should take the time to read the Washington State Landlord Tenant Act. You can find it at Revised Code of Washington 59.18. The act explains in detail many aspects of the landlord tenant relationship. Here are some tidbits.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS.

Unless the rental period is for more than one year, it isn’t necessary to have a written rental agreement, but it is highly advised. If you do have a written rental agreement for a specific period of time, it converts to a month-tomonth rental if it isn’t renewed for a new period of time.

BY ATTORNEY RICHARD PATRICK.

Deposits and fees are not the same thing. In Washington, there is no such thing as a “nonrefundable deposit.” Any funds retained by the landlord designated as a “deposit” are partially or fully refundable as per the language in the agreement. A “fee” is not refundable. So if you are a landlord who wants to take and keep a flat fee for allowing your tenant to have a dog, make sure your rental agreement says “NonRefundable Pet Fee,” and not “Pet Deposit.” You are not allowed to collect any deposit unless you have a written rental agreement and a written checklist describing the condition of the premises. The landlord must explain in writing what, if any, of the deposit is retained after the tenant moves out. The landlord must do this within 14 days of the tenant vacating the premises. If the landlord fails to give the written explanation within the 14-day period, the landlord is not

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM APRIL 2015

allowed to retain any of the deposit. The act details different time frames for different issues. The landlord must give the tenant at least three days notice to terminate the rental agreement for lack of payment of rent, and 30 days notice to increase the amount of rent in a month-to-month arrangement. Both parties are required to give the other at least 20 days notice to terminate the tenancy in a month-to-month arrangement, and that’s 20 days prior to the end of the next rental period, usually the end of the month. If the home you rent to others has a homeowners association with by-laws, make sure to provide a copy of the by-laws to your tenant and make it part of your rental agreement. Regardless of whether you are a landlord or tenant, it is important to take the time to read the act and be informed. Visit apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/ and follow the link to Title 59 for Landlord and Tenant. A Coach in Your Corner

Quick! When you hear “life coach,” what comes to mind? If your response is a bit murky, you’re not alone. Life coaching emerged in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but didn’t evolve into a profession until the ‘90s. Perhaps you’ve heard of life coaches, but chances are you haven’t hired one, and it’s quite possible you don’t know anyone who has. Anyone serious about sports has a coach to bring out their best. If you’re a parent supporting your child in their chosen sport, you want a coach who not only teaches the basics, but who will develop your child in the nuances of the sport. Whether it’s perfecting a swim stroke, getting a great jump off the blocks in a track meet or excelling in soccer, football or hockey, you expect the coach to maximize their performance. Perhaps the word “coach” conjures up a picture of sweaty teens focused on someone blowing a whistle and barking orders, so it may be difficult to see the coach as a partner.

FOCUSED CONVERSATIONS AND POWERFUL QUESTIONS. BY DEBORAH OLIVE.

Life Coaching A life coach provides a structure for success that supports their clients.

The coach trains the mind as well as the body, and provides structures to: • Set performance goals

• Address limiting beliefs • Develop and maintain a vision • Deal with stress • Measure and analyze performance • Maintain motivation (and more!) Let’s shift gears and ask, “What does it mean to have ‘a coach in your corner’ in life?” A life coach provides a structure for success that supports their client to generate results: faster, more consistent, less stress – you fill in the blank. The best life coaches know your answers are within you. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” If you hire a life coach, you hire a partner skilled in releasing your potential. Life-coaching is based on two things: focused conversations and powerful questions. Though we engage in conversations to convey information, cement social ties or pass the time, a coaching conversation is different. It requires planning and follow-through. It’s

“Expertise you can trust, from people who care.”

strategic. Powerful questions cause you to think in new ways. When people are told something, they don’t have to think, and it raises little awareness, motivation or creativity. Powerful questions raise all three and reveal action steps quite different than most on our “to-do” lists. A realtor who consistently earns over a million dollars a year told me that his coach asked, “Why aren’t you building high rises in the city?” He said, “I don’t know anything about building high rises.” But the question triggered him to ask, “What would I need to know? Who would I work with? Why not me?” Within months, he invested in his first high-rise project. Whether you want better parenting skills, to have greater ease in paying your bills, to grow your business, to overcome a health challenge, to have more free time with your family or … or … or … the key is that you fulfill your potential. If there’s something you’re struggling with or that keeps you awake at night, partnering with a skillful life coach might be just the ticket to move you from sleepless in Gig Harbor to snoozing through the night — confident of your success.

“You’ve sorted my undies so I suppose it’s OK for you to help me again tomorrow,” Margaret said with a twinkle in her eye as her tired body leaned against the walker. Newly diagnosed Parkinson’s was quickly stealing her independence as she struggled to maintain balance. Her daughter, Carol, evaluated options from her own home out of state. Somehow, from afar, she had to move Mom into the safety and care of a senior living community. Fortunately, Carol was quickly introduced to a unique type of assistance that would go far beyond what a mover could provide. Often partnering with a moving company, a Senior Move Manager® offers expertise, oversight and compassion during a senior’s transition to a new living space.

A Senior Move Manager’s® (SMM) work can begin hours, days or weeks prior to the arrival of a moving company. The SMM will get to know Mom, establish trust and help sort her most private and closely held belongings. She’ll measure furniture and create a floor plan, make a moving schedule, ensure family members have arranged for continuity of care and oversee the transition in order to ease stress levels on family members. Senior Move Managers® take pictures before packing a single box so that on Mom’s first night in her new home she’ll have the

familiarity of knowing exactly where her phone is on the bedside table or that her toothbrush is in the top right hand drawer in the bathroom, just as it has always been. Before the movers pack the kitchen, the SMM® will sort the food, throwing out expired items that cause illness. Aware that the small area rugs are tripping hazards, she’ll make sure they are left behind. The movers do a very specific job of getting belongings from one location to another, while a SMM® looks at the entire transition. She knows Mom will need a quiet, warm place to go when her doors are open and people are traipsing through her house. She’ll realize Mom hasn’t had any food and needs a bite to eat. She’ll even suggest improvements for making her new home as safe as possible. By evening, Mom’s boxes will be unpacked, her bed made just the way she likes it and her pictures hung on the wall. And after the move, her Senior Move Manager® will visit to make sure she’s settled in happily. If your loved one is moving soon, review your options thoughtfully. Hiring a member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers will ensure high ethics, compassion, efficiency, organization, safety and responsiveness to your needs and wants.

Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

Be Prepared for Those RMDs ARTICLE FOR USE BY EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR.

You might not think that 70½ represents any particular milestone. But when you do reach this age, you will have to make some decisions that affect an important aspect of your life - your retirement income. Here’s the background: Once you turn 70½, you will need to start taking withdrawals from your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan and from your traditional IRA (but not your Roth IRA). Actually, you will need to begin these withdrawals known as “required minimum distributions” (RMDs) - by April 1 of the following year and continue taking them by December 31 each year after that. These RMDs are calculated by dividing your account balance at the end of the previous year by your life expectancy, as determined by IRS mortality tables. If your spouse is your sole beneficiary and is more than 10 years younger than you, you’d use a separate table. Don’t worry too much about the number crunching, though, your financial advisor generally can do the calculations for you. What you should concern yourself with, however, are the first two words of RMD: “required” and “minimum.” These words mean what they say. If you don’t take withdrawals, or if you withdraw less than you should, you could face a 50 percent penalty tax on the difference between what you withdrew and what you should have withdrawn - and then you’ll still have to take out the required amount and pay taxes on the taxable portions of those withdrawals. So it’s a very good idea to take your withdrawals on time - and without “shortchanging” yourself.

That’s why it’s so important, during the early years of your retirement, to establish a sustainable withdrawal rate for your retirement accounts. Your withdrawal rate will depend on a variety of factors, such as your other sources of income - Social Security, earnings from employment, savings, etc. - your lifestyle choices, your estimated longevity and so on. In any case, once you have arrived at an appropriate withdrawal rate, you’ll need to stick to that rate unless your circumstances change. If you have multiple IRAs, you’ll also face another decision, because, once you’ve calculated your total RMDs for the year, from all your IRAs, you can take that amount from one or more of them. Depending on the investment mix of these individual IRAs, you may find it beneficial to take the money from one account and leave the others intact, to potentially grow further. (If you have multiple 401(k)s, though, you will likely need to calculate and withdraw the separate RMDs for each plan.) Other issues are also involved with RMDs, so, when the time approaches, consult with your tax and financial advisors. By studying all your options before you begin taking these withdrawals, you should be able to maximize their benefits.

Erin R. Abrigo Financial Advisor 5727 Baker Way NW, Suite 205 Gig Harbor, WA 98332

Of course, you can certainly take more than the required minimum amount - but should you? The answer depends on whether you need the money. But even if you have to take larger-than-minimum withdrawals, you’ll want to be careful not to take out more than you need - because if you “over-withdraw” year after year, you run the risk of outliving your resources.

The Consummate Consumer BE MINDFUL. YOUR PURCHASE SPEAKS POWERFULLY.

BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS.

It is time for all of us to take responsibility for our power as consumers. When we purchase an item, we are declaring our approval of it, therefore supporting and endorsing the business that will continue to produce it. Let’s exercise our consumerist ways to make great change. The way we purchase pushes manufacturers to improve their sourcing, process and product. You may consider yourself a savvy shopper, an educated buyer or even a consummate consumer. You are already part of the movement to buy local. You read most food labels, or at least, most of the label. You shop at farmers’ markets. You even pay attention to product packaging. Do you also apply this logic to purchases for your home? Eventually, all products will be packaged with a life cycle assessment, or LCA label: where the product is sourced (raw material acquisition), how it is produced (process/production), its use, re-usable options, maintenance required for it to perform well and end of life (waste management.)

22

LIVINGLOCAL

Until we have that transparency at our fingertips… Close your eyes and imagine a home that speaks to you. As you sit in this imagined space, how does it feel? What does it smell like? With what products do you choose to surround yourself? Take your imagined space to the next level by selecting your purchases with that same care. Infuse your home with healthy materials sourced, created with care and skill, within our region. Look for the product’s origin. Buying local is fantastic, and yet buying local is not enough.

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM APRIL 2015

Look further into the product chain. Where is the product sourced and manufactured? Do not be afraid to ask your local merchants these questions. If your local store is buying the product from halfway across the world, are you really buying local? Not yet. You are simply shopping local. Select materials and furnishings for your home not because they are popular or signify status, but because they make sense for you. The items within your home reflect the person who resides in it.

Shop Local vs. Buy Local If your local store is buying the product from halfway across the world, are you really buying local?

Let’s shed the old definition of the consummate consumer (keeping up), instead let’s ask more questions and gain access to product data, only then can we make informed choices. Together, we are redefining who the new American consumer is when we wield our power knowledgeably. We will all benefit from understanding what we are purchasing. Consume with care. LIFE & COMMUNITY Local Events and Stories

Outdoor Recreation For Everyone URBAN TRAILS PROVIDE FITNESS, FUN AND OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET NEW FRIENDS OF ALL AGES.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV. PHOTOS COURTESY SARAH POLYAKOV AND ERIC GUENTHER.

Urban trails and greenways are a gift found right in our own backyards. Not only do urban trails make our communities more livable, they also contribute to economic growth through tourism and civic improvement, all while preserving and restoring open spaces, fields and wetlands. But most of all, they provide a myriad of fun options for physical activity for people of all ages and have been found to improve both physical fitness and mental health. In fact, the mental and physical benefits of getting outdoors and getting active cannot be understated. Kristine Yaffe, MD headed a study that validated the holistic benefits of physical activity. Not only does physical activity reduce cognitive decline as we age, activity has so many benefits for the body. Her study found

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM APRIL 2015

that, “moderate levels of physical activity in elderly people have been shown to reduce mortality from coronary heart disease, to decrease the risk of osteoporotic fractures, and to improve bone mineral density.” (Archives of Internal Medicine). We are so fortunate to have an urban trail system in our own backyard of which Cushman Trail forms the backbone. Many of us depend on Gig Harbor’s Cushman Trail for recreational opportunities, whether we are cyclists, leisure strollers, runners or power walkers. The great news is that Cushman Trail has recently expanded, and the future of the trail is quite literally headed in an exciting direction. The most recent new section of Cushman Trail extends from 96th St. to Burnham and on to Borgen Blvd. This is a

25

very interesting quarter mile of trail stretch because the trail goes over a scenic wetland. Best of all, there will be a new restroom and parking facility at Borgen Blvd., just off the roundabout and next to Gig Harbor North for easy access. But the City of Gig Harbor and PenMet Parks in a continued partnership with Tacoma Public Utilities hope someday for the future expansion of the Cushman Trail. If all goes as people have envisioned, Cushman Trail will extend in one direction toward Purdy and another direction toward Tacoma. Cushman Trail will be connected to the Scott Pearson Trail that begins on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. This would make up one of the largest interurban trails in Pierce County. This project is essential to enhancing our quality of life in Gig Harbor and beyond. Another possibility is to connect the Cushman Trail to McCormick Forest Park and its four miles of forest trails. In order to do so, this would involve building a footbridge over Highway 16. Within the bigger picture, the hope is to connect Sehmel Homestead Park, McCormick Forest Park and Cushman Trail together on the Purdy side and to Tacoma on the other side. Finally, we must not underestimate the social aspects of the Cushman Trail system since it encourages strong community ties. PenMet Parks Commissioner, Kurt Grimmer, notes, “Trails bring together people of all backgrounds and ages to recreate together, and that contributes to a healthier community.”

and have a myriad of health benefits. But most of all, spending time on an urban trail is fun. Spring has arrived and there is no better time than the present to check out the new additions to Cushman Trail.

The Cushman Trail encourages strong social ties.

Be a Good Urban Trail Citizen: • Show courtesy to other trail users at all times. • Use the right side of the trail except when otherwise designated. • Always pass on the left. • Respect the rights of property owners. • Keep dogs on leash (maximum length eight feet) and remove pet feces from trail.

BELOW One of the many trails.

Bicyclists • Yield to pedestrians. • Give audible warning when passing pedestrians or other bicyclists. • Ride at a safe speed. Slow down and form a single file in congested conditions, reduced visibility and other hazardous conditions. Pedestrians • Stay to the right side of the trail except when otherwise designated. • Watch for other trail users. • Be especially alert when running. • Listen for audible signals and allow faster trail users (runners and bicyclists) to pass safely.

In order to preserve the environment, we need to appreciate it. In order to appreciate it, we need to see it. Urban trails allow us to experience the outdoors and therefore be empowered to preserve the environment while leaving a natural legacy for generations to come. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

EXOTIC, UNIQUE AND CREATIVE Local store offers selection of seafaring inspired gifts and decor. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Melissa Moller. Unique quality! That is what you will find upon entering Sea Hags, a distinctively unusual shop on Harborview Drive in the Finholm District of Gig Harbor. The store features American made, fair trade and local artists and offers a fabulous selection of exotic seafaring inspired jewelry, décor, fabrics, pottery, glassware, greeting cards, furniture and other items. “Blending all of this has become an art in itself, and it is fun too,” said owner Melissa Moller. Each time you visit Sea Hags, you are sure to find new items. Melissa’s passion and talent for finding unusual and useful merchandise is guided by her dedication to using as many recyclable products as possible. Owning and operating Sea Hags is a culmination of many life adventures for Melissa, whose very first job was shoe sales as a teenager in high school. She was a very successful advertising sales representative before she re-entered college getting her degree in psychology. “I loved working with students”, said Melissa who worked as a counselor with a company that partnered with high schools. Until 2001, her Alaskan summer job was working as a deckhand on a commercial salmon seiner. She also had a small coffee and

gift shop on the main street in Hoonah, selling local artwork. It was in 2001 when she needed a change. “I needed another learning curve and got into real estate, and that was when I saw a need for more retail in the downtown area.” It was then she opened the doors to Sea Hags, something she had long desired to do after her experience of serving thousands of tourists arriving in Alaskan cruise ships. Sea Hags opened in August 2013, and it was not long before the community of Gig Harbor and visitors to the area discovered the unique quality of the store that focuses on coastal waterway themes. “We want the customer to feel at ease and share the imagination of the artists and creators,” said Melissa. “We also want to give them ideas of how our artistic décor can be used.” In March of last year, Melissa added even more flair to her shop when Vicki Dyer, owner of Vicki Jean Bags, began to share space at Sea Hags. “Vicki brings years of experience as a shop owner with her, and it has been a fabulous blend mutually benefiting both of us,” shared Melissa. Vicki Jean Bags sell bags and leather items that are not only popular with locals, but are also selling internationally. She guarantees all her work and enjoys creating custom orders for her customers. These custom creations

include motorcycle tank covers and saddlebags, a headrest for a Tiger Moth airplane and a custom aviator style helmet for dog. Unique quality, indeed! As a Gig Harbor resident for the past 34 years, Melissa said she saw a need for more artistic shops where tourists and locals alike can enjoy a walk along the waterfront, dining, shopping or participating in one of the many events that take place at the waterfront. “I wanted to contribute to improving downtown with a shop to inspire locals to shop local and tourists to come back,” said Melissa. In an effort to give back to her beloved community that has supported her through the years, Melissa volunteers her time to the Downtown Waterfront Association and is also on the Economic Development Committee. “I am committed to helping downtown improve on what it has to offer to the community and to our visitors,” says Melissa.

IN FOCUS PRACTICE YOUR SWING

Catch the inaugural Fisherman’s Cup Classic golf tournament. By Sarah Polyakov.

“Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” – Arnold Palmer We all know that the U.S. Open will be arriving in the area soon, and the excitement surrounding this event is palpable. So, why not tee-off and practice your swing at the Fisherman’s Cup Classic golf tournament? This year the Harbor History Museum is offering something new to celebrate the legacy of Gig Harbor’s fishermen. After all, our lovely community was founded, sustained and has come to be what it is today because of Gig Harbor’s founding fishing families. Over 100 years ago, families arrived from Croatia, Sweden, Norway and Italy. Those same families laid the foundation for Gig Harbor’s growth and became the center of this area’s economic success. The first annual Fisherman’s Cup will be held on April 25th at the Gig Harbor Golf and Country Club. GHGC, which opened in 1961, is a regulation-length 9-hole golf club featuring multiple tee boxes and majestic views of Mt. Rainier. With a mix of hilly terrain, flat terrain and water hazards, this course features challenges for all skill levels. The Fisherman’s Cup will feature a 9-hole four-person scramble, and there will be ample room for a total of 72 players. Cash games will include a putting contest, longest drive, low scores, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. In addition to a day of play, there will be fun well into the evening. Following the tournament, participants will have the opportunity to attend the Fly Ball Awards ceremony and a celebration banquet that will feature a delicious seafood cookout, cash bar and dancing. The popular and often requested local band, “Sounds Like Delores,” will provide live music. There will also be a Big Catch raffle prize and each hole will feature new products from local vendors. But please be advised that tickets are going fast and half have already sold.

The Harbor History Museum is going back to basics and developing meaningful events that are relevant to our seafaring history. This year’s inaugural Fisherman’s Cup is going to be a throwback to yesteryear and is sure to offer enjoyment for all. Whether spectator or sportsman, novice or experienced golfer, this event is sure to have something for you. This is an event that we can all get behind by joining the Harbor History Museum in recognizing Gig Harbor’s maritime history and founding families. So join other community members, practice your swing and play the greatest game that mankind ever invented. BOTTOM With the U.S. Open just around the corner, many in our community are getting in the spirit by dusting off their clubs and hitting the courses.

That’s Debatable!

Did you know that Gig Harbor High School’s Speech and Debate team is the top in Washington State? Enthusiastic coaches and successful students are taking the team to unprecedented levels. GHHS coach and teacher Chris Coovert said about 90 students competed in at least one debate tournament this year, with a core team of 50. “We have a lot of incredibly talented, hard-working students.” A group of them will travel to Dallas in June for the Speech and Debate Nationals.

SPEECH AND DEBATE DEVELOP SKILLS THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME.

Tournaments often last two days with many events and multiple elimination rounds leading to finals. Sophomore Eric Anderson explained that debate is different than most sports, where two teams play against one another in one match. With debate tournaments, teams from all over western Washington compete; it is every school against every other school. “It is kind of like March Madness, kind of a bracket system,” Anderson said.

BY JULIANNA VERBOORT. PHOTOS COURTESY OF KOPACHUCK MIDDLE SCHOOL.

Anderson and fellow student Natalie Murphy along with other high school debate students

from GHHS and Peninsula High School are sharing their skills by mentoring 6th - 8th graders in debate this spring. By early April, the four middle school teams will experience the thrill of a tournament, facing off in a daylong challenge. It is a win-win situation for all; high-schoolers gain community service credits and middle-schoolers dip their toes into an interest that may grow. “Debate helps kids develop critical thinking, research and presentation skills. Those are probably the most direct academic benefits,” says Coovert. “But it also helps students develop the ability to work independently, set goals and to work as part of a team. Debate students learn how to be self-sufficient as researchers and scholars, to a much greater extent than most other students. It can also be a place where kids gain confidence or just find a place to fit it and have friends.” Anderson said, “Debate is one of the most versatile groups in the school. Some of my friends are band geeks and some are football players who you’d never guess would have an interest in philosophy.” And, Anderson said, it

is flexible. “It doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time. The kids competing in State and National are probably the kids who also have 3.9 GPAs and are very involved, but there are a lot of events, like opportunities to work on acting and general presentation. It is all about trying it, there are lots of choices.” Students can letter in Speech and Debate, but serious competitors seek something more... the black sticker. “Based on how you do, you get points and stickers on a certificate. They build up over the years,” explained Anderson. “Eventually you can get the black sticker - I would say it is coveted! It is something you have to work hard for and you usually don’t get it until the end of your senior year.” Other perks of debate team for Anderson include “Spending time with my friends. It has been cool to get to know people from all groups and different ages. These friendships will help me for a long time and in many ways. There are so many cool people who have passed through debate and who I’ve gotten the opportunity to talk to.” Is Speech and Debate a smart choice? Yes! There’s no debating that.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

Since the age of 6, Sarah Anderson has loved to swim. As a freshman, she joined both the Gig Harbor High School swim and water polo teams, helping to propel them to success over the years. The water polo team took home the state championship in 2012 and 2014, and as a swimmer Sarah competed in the WIAA Swim and Dive Championships her junior and senior years. But Sarah’s success extends far beyond the pool; she has maintained a 3.9 GPA and takes honors and AP classes including AP Literature and AP Psychology. Looking ahead, Sarah will attend Western Washington University in the fall where she will continue to work hard in the classroom and in the pool as a member of the school’s water polo team. Sarah will pursue a career as an elementary school teacher, something she has known she

A senior at Peninsula High School, Sophie has been on the varsity cross-country team for three years, including a trip to state, and is in her fourth season of track and field, a sport in which she has advanced to districts every year. Parks Appreciation Day LOVE YOUR LOCAL PARK AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON APRIL 25. BY SARAH POLYAKOV. Our local parks provide many wonderful functions, and they always have something for everyone. Whether you bring your children or grandchildren to the playground, your canine companion to the dog park, or simply visit the park to play tennis, kick a soccer ball, play ultimate Frisbee or take a nature walk, our local park system benefits us all. Even more, parks help us live longer because they enrich our lives by offering active pursuits, opportunities to learn new life skills or take part in educational programs, all within a clean and safe environment. Well-maintained parks also have broader benefits that include ongoing environmental stewardship and contributions to local economic growth. Finally, great parks help

build a stronger community by connecting individuals, groups and families through the power of play and volunteerism. Since parks and recreation programs bring tremendous benefits to our community, this is your chance to give back. On April 25, which marks the day after Arbor Day and part of National Parks Week, there is an opportunity to volunteer and enjoy the outdoors. You can be part of this countywide effort along with nearly 2,000 other people who will be working in local parks at the same time. Be sure to wear weather-appropriate, casual clothing. Bring tools such as small hand tools, loppers, pruners, gloves, rakes, shovels or wheelbarrows, labeled with your name. Don’t forget to invite friends and carpool to this event in order to reduce carbon emissions. Bring your children since this is a great way to make them aware of the importance of environmental stewardship and volunteerism. Most of all bring smiles to this fun-filled event where you can make a difference with others in our community by working toward a common goal that benefits all of us. Hope to see you there!

COVER STORY ENJOY THE RIPPLE

U.S. Open comes to Chambers Bay. By Julianna Verboort.

For the first time since its founding in 1895, the U.S. Open national golf championship will be held in the Pacific Northwest. The United States Golf Association (USGA) selected Chambers Bay in University Place for the 72-hole tournament, catapulting Pierce County into the bright beam of the worldwide sporting spotlight. The greatest golfers on the planet will play before an expected audience of 235,000 during the week of June 15 to 21, with 150 million watching via global television. Exciting news for golf lovers and Fox Sports! How special is this honor? This year marks the 115th U.S. Open and only the third time a municipal course has been chosen. Kudos to course owners, Pierce County and the partners who helped pitch for the event. What if you don’t care for golf? You’ll still benefit. Pierce County administrators project a $140 million regional boon. Lodging, meals, car rentals, T-shirts, sales tax and more will add up, and with over half of the spectators coming from out of town the estimated area “room nights” is 87,000! Short-term employment will spike too, with roles ranging from hospitality to shuttle drivers to trades people building USGA’s “tent city.” There is more to count than the dollars trading hands during those magical days of the June championship, though. The event

causes a ripple effect. “We have seen off-thecharts visitation for 2014,” says Pat McCarthy, County Executive. And increased revenues will continue after all the trophy-kissing ends. U.S. Open historical trends indicate we can count on spectators re-visiting to take in additional attractions, and new tourists drawn by 32-plus hours of television coverage (don’t forget about post-event Internet views). With such a regional boost at stake, Pierce County is motivated to create a welcoming, fun vibe along with a successful event so that the USGA will want to come back, too. “We need to put our best foot forward. There are a lot of communities vying for majors because of the economic benefit,” says McCarthy, with an eye to the future. “We’ve been in discussion for other types of Opens too, the Women’s Open for example. Once they try this course using fescue grass, it is so different, they’ll feel compelled to come back, especially if their experience is good. That is why we are focusing on all the particulars, to make sure it is a successful event.”

linksland course to attract national and international players, and that vision matched USGA’s goals. The development and design team worked with the elements to build an astoundingly ideal course: Walking-only (no pesky cart paths to disrupt the landscape) with changing elevations, unusually wide fairways, long tees, bunkers and enormous sand dunes provide a character that brings to mind courses in Scotland. Our unpredictable June weather is a plus too; the USGA’s executive director Mike Davis is hoping for some rain, wind, fog, sunshine, dew, a little bit of everything to add to test both the course and the champions.

The best-ranked player with local ties is Ryan Moore, 36th in the world according to ESPN’s March 1 list. Ryan grew up in Puyallup and is a great supporter of golf in our area. His vision is “to make golf more accessible and more affordable” through RMG Club, a company he co-founded with family and friends. Ryan’s father, Mike Moore, regards Chambers Bay as “A wonderful addition to golf in the Northwest, an excellent challenge, and beautiful views, of course.” RMG owns and operates several local courses, including the landmark Oakbrook in Lakewood, which they opened to the public in 2012 after 46 years as a private club. Mike recalled that Ryan’s golf skills and unique swing were evident as young as 4 or 5 and says Ryan is ready for the U.S. Open, adding, “We’re blessed to have the Open coming to the Tacoma area. I think it will be a great event. He’s looking forward to a major championship in his own back yard.”

Increased revenues will continue after all the trophy-kissing ends. U.S. Open historical trends indicate we can count on spectators re-visiting to take in additional attractions...

Chambers Bay is stunningly beautiful, but it is also a story of Pacific Northwestern innovation and environmental rehabilitation. The 900plus acre site was recently an unused sand and gravel quarry. At the time that course development was under discussion, the USGA was already seeking to hold an event in Washington. Pierce County envisioned transforming the quarry into a world-class

Chambers Bay is the first course in the Northwest to receive Audubon International’s Silver Sanctuary certification for environmental protection. Designed to use minimal water and require minimal maintenance, the greens are planted with drought-tolerant fescue. Bioswales, natural filtration basins and sediment retaining ponds are among the sound choices that help keep groundwater clean. Pierce County calls Chambers Bay “a poster child for sustainable golf,” supporting the USGA’s brown-is-the-new-green ethos.

The public is excited too. There are thousands of volunteer jobs-4,500 in fact. The USGA typically needs three months to recruit, but for this tournament it took just two days to fill the spots! Volunteers hail from all 50 states and dozens of countries, although the vast majority are locals. From Edmonds to Gig Harbor to Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), the area is rolling out the red carpet. Abigail Lovell, owner of Abigail’s Concierge Services in Gig Harbor, has a list of 300 homes to rent to vendors and spectators,

booking at rates from $4,000 to $25,000 for the event week. She even hired an interpreter to help communicate with golf-lovers from Japan. “Having this kind of exposure is definitely going to increase tourism. But it is important for services, specifically restaurants, to understand that these are long days for spectators and vendors, so if they want to capitalize, they should consider their hours and stay open later in the evenings or offer a delivery service,” said Lovell. Gig Harbor’s U.S. Open Committee also is developing transportation options with shuttles from the harbor to University Place. McCarthy offers some peace of mind about the transportation crunch: “As with all U.S. Opens, people will be bussed from remote parking locations. There won’t be hundreds of thousands of people driving into University Place. The USGA has been doing this for many years, and it is unbelievable how smooth they make it happen.” Who will take the trophy home? The eyes of the world will be upon us; with our shining Pacific Northwestern nature, we’ll all be winners. As McCarthy sums up, “We’ll be able to showcase how wonderful it is here. We can show we’re a state of innovation, technology and environmental sustainability. From the top of Mount Rainier to the beautiful shores of Puget Sound, what place could better give you that sense of the environment and of a community that is keeping it a great place to live, work and play?”

The Best Local Shopping

In The Mix SPRING FASHION IS ALL ABOUT BOLD HUES AND SPORTY STYLE.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

For the next several months, warm weather is here to stay and what better way to celebrate than by refreshing your spring wardrobe. Fortunately, the spring trends for 2015 offer something for everyone and tend to be laid-back, yet stylish at the same time. This season’s most surprising “it” shade is yellow. Don’t dismiss yellow just yet; there are yellows with warm undertones and those with cool undertones. You might be surprised that wearing a blouse or sundress in saffron, amber, marigold or canary will be the color to help you make a fabulous entrance. There are also complementary echoes of fall 2014 prints in the works. During the fall we saw plaid reimagined. This spring, it’s all about plaid’s retro, sassy, sister print: gingham. Freshen up your wardrobe by adding a casual gingham shirt for layering. Or, if you want to take center stage, try a modern take on a 1950’s classic by pairing a gingham circle skirt with tank top under a slouchy, white blouse. Don’t forget this season’s combination pairing that is based on cool blues and bright whites. On warm days, why not wear a pair of white jeans with a blue and white printed dolman sleeve shirt? Or channel your inner (or outer) tennis player

by trying pieces designers are calling “sports luxe.” These items include sport-inspired moto jackets, cross body purses and of course classic polo shirts in an array of pastels. In fact, polo shirts are bigger than ever. Try pairing them with a knee length skirt for a dressy feel. Or if you prefer a more casual look, pair them with one of this season’s best on-trend pieces: culottes. Yes, culottes are back, but they have been envisioned to have a slim cut and a longer line so that they flatter everybody. But, the best part of this season is that comfortable footwear is here to stay. The world’s feet can breathe a collective sigh of relief since five-inch heels are not on the horizon for spring 2015. Designers are offering comfortable yet dressy tennis shoes, sporty slides and an array of strappy, flat sandals that can be seamlessly transitioned from day to evening. Don’t forget accessories. The metal of the moment is polished brass. Look for chokers and chunky statement necklaces in richly colored brass. Top off your look with a pair of demure earrings for day and chandelierstyle earrings for a seamless evening look. As always, don’t forget to visit local boutiques first for these distinctive spring 2015 looks.

Tips to Keep You Healthy

Setting New Habits IT’S MORE THAN WILLPOWER.

BY TERESA PESCE.

This column is dedicated to the middle-aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older,” acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. Did you know that with each repetition of an action, you deepen a little road in your brain? Your brain points to various roads (neuron paths) and says, “Here’s the road I follow to brush my teeth. Here’s the one to drive the car.” You don’t have to slow down and ponder every movement in these activities — they’re automatic, well-traveled brain paths. Every habit, both good and bad, is like that. That’s why habits are hard to “break.” But they don’t break — you must persevere with new paths until the old ones fade and the brain learns to take the new path.

LIVINGLOCAL

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM APRIL 2015

And as we all know, it’s much harder to break a habit that is always rewarded by a surge of dopamine, that addictive, feel-good chemical of reward bestowed by the brain. Did you know that drugs (bad) produce dopamine (whee!) and things like running (good) and sugar and sucrose (not so good) also cause its production? After all, there is a reason the tagline for See’s Candy is, “A happy habit.” Addiction isn’t necessarily bad; it depends on what you’re addicted to! Addiction can work for you (running) or against you (sugar). So when we blithely decide to

53

lose weight and get in shape and then wonder why we seem to resist our own selves at every turn, the cause isn’t weak willpower or lack of focus — it is most often our brain-path habits and dopamineproducing addictions! And those, my friend, aren’t overcome by good intentions. When you head toward the gym instead of driving to the local coffee haven for a tripleshot, something-sweet latte, you will find that you are trying to steer yourself out of a deeply ingrained brain rut. And let me tell you, it’s a reluctant ride. It feels like the power steering went on the fritz, and you’re trying to navigate with the wheel superglued in place. But before we succumb to complete despair or beat ourselves up because we’re “weak,” remember that just as a muscle will atrophy when not used, so will a brain-path. It will become shallower until it’s only a trace. And a raging, tantrum-throwing sugar-dopamine addiction fades when firmly replaced with an alternate dopamine source – preferably, exercise. “We can learn to recognize unhealthy patterns and stop them in their tracks. By increasing our awareness, we create new healthy pathways. This new awareness brings personal empowerment and creates greater freedom in our ability to choose new responses to old patterns.” (Referenced from the Earl Consulting Newsletter, Winter 2014). There is HOPE!! Your brain has an amazing capacity for change. Instead of pitting your body against your brain and suffering as collateral damage in their war, put some energy into uniting them.

In other words, the dopamine rush helps create the brain paths that prompt the rush: it creates a habit. Did you know that sugar triggers the same dopamine brain results as cocaine and heroin? So yes, you can become “addicted” to sugar, and your brain will happily repeat any activity (habit) that repeats that lovely “high.” This is why addictions are also referred to as “habits.” The reason I mention this impressive but distressing fact, is that we are so hard on ourselves when we stumble in our efforts to become slim and trim. We underestimate the forces at work within us, and we don’t pause to consider how deeply ingrained our mental habits have become or how sugar has seduced us into dependence upon it in order to feel good. These are the reasons losing weight and getting fit are so hard to do and feel so “punishing.” All the sugar-induced dopamine rewards stop. All the familiar paths to happiness and peace via food are forbidden.

Did You Know? Did you know that sugar triggers the same dopamine brain results as cocaine and heroin?

BELOW Try a healthy smoothie instead of that cup of coffee each morning.

It will be very hard to jerk our wheels out of those deep mental habit-ruts and guide ourselves into new paths. So instead of being hard on yourself, be in absolute awe of yourself that you would even attempt such a thing! And know that in the end, the same brain of yours that was once mapped one way will soon be mapped in a better way, and the addictions that drove you will not do so anymore. You’ll be free as well as fit. You brave, brave warrior, you. *Excerpted from “How Sugar Affects the Brain” by Nicole Avena.

Double-Edged Dopamine “A surge of dopamine that thrills us also consolidates the neuronal connections responsible for the behaviors that lead us to accomplish our goal.”*

A raging, tantrumthrowing sugardopamine addiction fades when firmly replaced with an alternate dopamine source – preferably, exercise. RIGHT We can learn to recognize unhealthy patterns and stop them in their tracks.

Snore Like A Chainsaw? I KNOW I DO.

BY DR. RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS.

My husband says I snore. I say he does! We’re both right. I like to think that as a woman I have a more delicate type of snoring disorder. But now I’m dreaming! I speak all across the U.S. and Canada to dental audiences. During one exhausting trip, I woke up in my hotel room to someone banging on the adjacent wall. How embarrassing!! My decibel level can be quite high; I don’t have a quiet “whisper” type of snoring.

breathing tends to release stress hormones during sleep, which can raise blood sugar levels.

Does someone in your family snore? You may not realize it, but snoring disturbs your sleep. You also may disturb the sleep of other people. My husband didn’t believe me when I said he not only snored, but that he stopped breathing and flailed his legs around. So, like any good, well-intentioned wife, I took a video of him with my cell phone.

There are other causes of sleep disorders: insomnia, central nervous system disorders and medication-induced sleep apnea are a few. Regardless, I know one thing to be true: You need good sleep in order to heal and be healthy. Personally, I think sleeping and eating are a waste of time. I mean, look how much we could get done if we didn’t have to do these two things! All kidding aside, how crummy do you feel if you’re sleep deprived?

Snoring and sleep apnea are common sleep disorders. Snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is where you stop breathing at night, causing decreased oxygen levels (hypoxia). Most people who have sleep apnea have multiple low-level arousals at night that cause exhaustion the next day. Some questions: Do you feel tired in the morning even if you’ve had enough hours of sleep? Is your blood pressure an issue, weight gain or trouble losing weight? Do you or your family have any history of heart attack, stroke or diabetes?

How are your blood sugar levels? One recent Canadian study showed that 23 percent of patients diagnosed with mild or moderate sleep apnea went on to develop diabetes within 5.5 years. Also, about half of type 2 diabetics have sleep-disordered breathing.

My patients feel more irritable, grouchy, depressed and are definitely more sensitive to pain. The solution: You need a sleep study for a proper diagnosis. You need a diagnosis that’s interpreted by a board certified sleep physician. You don’t have to go to a sleep clinic; you can do this in your home. You’ll be comfortable and in your own bed. You still may have a difficult time sleeping with all the wires and attachments, but you’ll feel good knowing your status and understanding your options for treatment.

Is stress an issue for you, affecting your sleep? Do you wake up stressed, having to use the facilities often at night? Sleep-disordered

BY SUSAN HOFFMAN. Everyone goes to the gym for different reasons. Some want to lose weight, others train for an athletic event, or some go just to make sure they get their use out of a gym membership. And then there are those who go to build strength or to participate in cardiovascular exercises for a healthier heart. All of these are valid reasons to visit the gym, but what you may not know is that aerobic exercise is good for your brain! “Aerobic exercise has been shown, in numerous studies, to provide brain benefits ranging from enhanced cognitive flexibility to better memory to new cell growth. In addition, because working out floods your body and brain with the hormones that affect mood, it can have a significant effect on your mental health,” explains Danielle Restucci in her article “How Aerobic Exercise Helps Your Brain.” It is sometimes difficult to fit a gym workout into an already full schedule of work and commitments. It is easy to procrastinate going to the gym and use the time for other activities or obligations. But most gym goers will say emphatically, “I feel so much better after my workout.” During exercise, the body releases the hormones endorphins, dopamine and serotonin, which can decrease stress and temporarily enhance your mood. Some people might perceive a workout as endless boring moments on a treadmill or doing painful pushups and countless crunches. But a good gym should provide

56

LIVINGLOCAL

many options which can be tailored both to what your body is capable of as well as an activity you might actually enjoy. Aerobic exercise includes walking, running, swimming, biking, yoga, dancing and rowing. The gym accommodates all ages, and going to the gym on a regular basis can combat brain shrinkage and increase cognitive capabilities. During exercise, the blood flow to your brain is increased, bringing oxygen and important nutrients to your brain resulting in better memory. Exercise is good for building muscles, but it also benefits the brain by slowing or even reversing the physical decay of the brain. Vigorous exercise is especially valuable for those with health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even cancer. As with any type of exercise, injuries can occur resulting in structural problems such as nerve interference and spinal misalignments that may interfere with benefits of exercise. Therefore, regular chiropractic care can detect and correct a problem in order for you to restore and maintain your nerve system so that your workouts in the gym give you the optimum benefits to both your body and brain. The familiar expression and reminder of “use it or lose it” supports the knowledge that the brain, like all muscles and organs, declines with underuse and age. Therefore, when you exercise you should be encouraged that you will not only look better, but you will be boosting your brain by growing new neural connections. See you at the gym.

Diabetes & Inflammation THE VICIOUS CYCLE. BY GLORIA GILBÉRE, CDP, DA HOM, PHD, DSC, ECOERGONOMIST, WHOLISTIC REJUVENIST, HTMA PRACTITIONER. This is part one of a two part series. It is not a new discovery that diabetes and inflammation coexist. What is new is victims of inflammatory disorders, like fibromyalgia, are so busy dealing with pain and diluted quality of life, they don’t check blood sugar levels, especially A1c – the three-month average blood sugar and best indicator of dietary lifestyle. Anatomy of the Vicious Cycle Swedish studies identified the two disorders are connected! And researcher, Dr. Richard K. Bernstein’s equation connects this vicious cycle: Inheritance + inflammation + fat in the blood feeding the liver = insulin resistance = elevated serum insulin levels = fat cells build as abdominal fat = rise in triglycerides in the liver’s blood supply = enhanced inflammation = increased insulin levels due to increased insulin resistance. Fat is Fat, Right? When researchers write about fat, they’re not referring to consumed fat – they’re referring to blood fat – from eating carbohydrates and existing body fat. Inflammation, researchers believe, is tied to underlying insulin resistance, and I agree because of observations in my practice. Here’s their methodology: The Immune System: • Brings more red and white blood cells to the area when detecting an assault of inflammation. • Opens blood vessel walls so fluid can come into the infected or injured parts. • Sends healing substances like cholesterol to the area to make “patches” for damaged areas and help new cells grow. That’s fine for an infected finger, but imagine that process going on continually in your kidneys, eyes or coronary arteries! Once the invader – inflammation – is defeated, the system cools, right? Not always.

Active immune cells originally called to help should go home, leaving a few guards watching for another attack; but that doesn’t always happen. When there’s no cool-down, the tissues stay hot and swollen – resulting in blood vessel wall breakdown that can become blocked. Research shows chronic low-grade inflammation plays a role in all major diseases — heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune, arthritis and fibromyalgia, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Biological Bandages High blood sugar triggers inflammation and injures blood vessels. Researchers report injuries caused by high glucose and high blood pressure call immune system defenses “to the rescue” and plaques form like bandages to heal damage. Even more healthdepleting is chronic inflammation because the plaques break down, move through the system and can restrict or block the flow. According to Harvard cardiovascular expert, Peter Libby, MD, “It isn’t just sludge caking up on vessel walls, there’s an inflammatory response – making plaques susceptible to rupturing. When that occurs, organs are damaged or outright destroyed! Chronic inflammation is what will likely kill you if you have heart disease and/or diabetes.” Origins of Inflammation Where does it come from? There are medical unknowns but we know inflammation is caused by environmental chemicals, excessive and chronic, infections, allergies (food and environmental), high glucose, excessive abdominal fat, high carbohydrate foods, sugar, high blood pressure and unnatural food. When stressed, the body prepares for damage – cranking-up inflammatory responses, period. Dr. Gilbére is Founder/CEO Institute for Wholistic Rejuvenation, an acclaimed author (18 books), talk-show host, creator of 8 post-graduate courses and 1,700+ health articles. She consults worldwide via telephone and Skype and in Gig Harbor. Visit: www.gloriagilbere.com or call 888.352.8175.

However, don’t forget that there are many other ways to liven up your grill. “While I love the summertime grill favorites as much as the next person, anything goes on the grill these days — from meatballs to pineapple to pancakes,” says Joan Hanson, test kitchen director for Hormel Foods. “It’s time to add some unexpected foods to your flame.” If you’re looking to expand your palate when it comes to grilling, look no further than the following tips: • Introduce bacon to the grill. Tradition states that bacon is typically a breakfast side. But what about other meals? No longer does bacon have to be cooked by itself on the stovetop or in the microwave. Bacon is fast becoming the unlikely go-to ingredient to pair with a variety of foods such as ice cream, chocolate and even alcohol. Instead, bring this savory trend to the grill this summer. It can make for a tasty accompaniment to any meal. • Think outside the (pizza) box. When pizza is on the menu, it’s sure to satisfy the whole family — especially when it’s cooked on the grill. To get that crisp

wood-fired taste, try pizza paninis — all you need are bread, pizza sauce, pepperoni slices, mozzarella cheese and any variety of meats and vegetables that fit each person’s tastes. You can even make a unique combination of barbecue chicken or pork with shredded meat, red onion and cheddar. Or, put out a variety of veggies, meats and cheese, and people can create their own personal pizza. • Import island flavors into your home. Bring home the love affair of the south seas and Hawaii with inspired cuisine, such as teriyaki and pineapple, which offer island-inspired flavors. Bacon-Wrapped Grilled Corn Remove husks and silk from corn. Rinse corn; pat dry. Cut each of 15 wooden picks in half. Use 1 wooden pick to secure first piece bacon at top of 1 ear corn; wrap bacon in spiral to center of corn. Place end of second piece bacon on top of end of first piece; secure with wooden pick. Continue wrapping second piece bacon around corn; fasten end with wooden pick. Repeat with remaining bacon and corn. Prepare grill for medium-hot coals. Coat bacon-wrapped corn with cooking spray. Grill corn, turning frequently, 5 to 10 minutes or until corn is golden brown and bacon is crisp.

VEGGIE SLIDERS A HEART HEALTHY DISH Prep Time: 15 minutes Servings: 6

Stir into mashed beans.

Gather Ingredients • 1 can black beans (drained, rinsed) • 1/2 small red bell pepper, (1/3 cup small dice) • 1/2 small onion, (1/3 cup small dice) • 1 stalk of celery, (1/3 cup small dice) • 3 cloves garlic (peeled, diced) • 1/3 cups California raisins (finely chopped) • 1 egg • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder • 2 teaspoons cumin • 3/4 cup bread crumbs • 1/2 cup quinoa, cooked and cooled Divide into small patties. Makes 12 patties.

Put it Together If grilling, preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, lightly oil a sheet of aluminum foil. If baking, preheat oven to 375 degrees (F) and lightly oil a baking sheet. In a medium bowl, mash black beans until thick and pasty. In a small bowl, mix finely chopped bell pepper, onion, celery, garlic and California raisins.

In another small bowl, stir egg, salt, chili and chipotle powder and cumin. Stir the egg mixture into mashed beans. Mix in bread crumbs and quinoa until mixture is sticky and holds together. For a healthy alternative to the American grilling classic, the burger, consider adding unique ingredients such as California Raisins to add flavor and nutrition. A good source of potassium and fiber, raisins are an all-natural, no-sugar-added ingredient and are fat- and cholesterol-free.

As if that weren’t enough, raisins may support heart health, according to new research. A study at the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Center suggests eating raisins three times daily may significantly lower blood pressure for adults with prehypertension. “Raisins deliver dietary fiber and beneficial nutrients like potassium and antioxidants associated with cardio-protective benefits, such as reduced blood pressure,” said Dr. James Painter, registered dietitian and nutrition research advisor for the California Raisin Marketing Board. “These findings add to the growing body of scientific evidence that indicates there may be numerous positive health benefits linked to eating raisins.”

Fine Wine & Recreation Walla Walla, Washington. By Colin Anderson.

When you think of great American wines, California’s Sonoma and Napa Valleys are probably a couple that first come to mind and with good reason. Wines produced from these regions have gained notoriety around the world, winning awards when going up against centuries old wineries in France and Italy. But there is another region that’s beginning to earn that reputation, and it’s closer than you might think. The Walla Walla Valley is now home to more than 100 wineries and 1,800 acres of grapes. The first winery opened up in 1977 with several more in the early 1980s; and as word continues to spread about the unique growing conditions here, more and more vintners are taking root in Walla Walla. Walla Walla is the perfect backdrop for a romantic weekend, family reunion, girls’ trip or culinary exploration. The historic downtown is well-preserved with old-charm fused with fine dining and upscale shopping. Many of the regional wineries have also placed their tasting rooms in the downtown core, allowing you to sample many different vineyards without ever leaving downtown. For those who want to explore beyond the downtown, there are plenty of transportation services including private cars, shuttle buses and limos. And there are many options for wine tastings as well. You can find anything from small “mom and pop” outfits to waiting list only wine clubs. There are the come-asyou-are to appointment-only private tastings.

64

Most tasting rooms charge a $5 to $10 fee to sample several wines, and that fee is refundable with the purchase of a bottle. If you plan on stopping at more than a couple, hire a driver so you can enjoy the day and keep everybody safe. While tasting rooms are open year-round, there are a few big weekends where hotels and vacation rentals fill up fast. Spring Barrel release is May 1 to 3; Fall release is November 6 to 8 and Holiday Barrel tasting is December 4 to 6. Many visitors come just for the food and wine, but there is plenty else to offer in the way of outdoor activities. Blue Mountain Resort is a short drive away, offering skiing and tubing in the winter and great mountain biking, Frisbee golf and adventure courses in the summer. Cycling is big here, with miles of well-paved roads offering sweeping views of the valley. There are half a dozen golf courses within an hour drive, and both the Columbia and Snake River are close, offering fishing, boating and paddling opportunities. The historic Marcus Whitman Hotel is teeming with local history. There are also many galleries and museums to explore. Live music abounds with several local theaters and live music. This August, the Gentlemen of the Road Tour, featuring Foo Fighters and Mumford and Sons, makes a stop at Whitman College. If you’re into history, relaxation, good food and good wine, you’re bound to have a good time in Walla Walla. It’s a slower pace and most people

you run into are as friendly as can be (could be the wine talking). So if you’re looking for a sip of fine wine, skip California this time and see what southeastern Washington has to offer.
