Celebrating Wildlife

With spring upon us, we find ourselves outside and exploring all the beauty of our area. With this often comes the experience of seeing wildlife, maybe even more up close than we had planned. This article by Mary Terra-Berns addresses the issue of interacting with young animals in the wild and the work that is being done by organizations to help wildlife rehabilitation. She also addresses the efforts being made to educate the public on everything from marine life to animals that inhabit our forests.

Over the past decade, the number of wineries in the Northwest has increased exponentially. No longer do we need to travel to California to tour wineries and enjoy the experience of wine tasting. In this article by Colin Anderson, he speaks with an experienced winemaker and addresses the questions many have when it comes to wine tasting. You don’t have to be a connoisseur to enjoy the experience; you simply have to enjoy the taste of wine. Cheers!

PUBLISHER Don’t Lose Hope! WE TURN ON THE TELEVISION only to witness news reports of violence and despair at home and abroad. Politicians bickering. Divisiveness that stems from politics, beliefs and race. But does life really have to be that way? We are now in the Lenten season and eagerly anticipating the approach of Easter Sunday. The Easter Season is filled with hope and renewal. After all, Easter, as the celebration when Jesus was resurrected, is the symbol of ultimate hope in the Christian world. Hope is defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Some may argue that this can lead to discouragement if our expectations are not met. But stop to think about it. Where would we be without hope? We do not have to look far to see how we can help others find the hope they so desire. During the Lenten season, many talk about sacrificing things they love. But why not try something different (and if you think it’s too late since Lent has already begun…think again!). Sacrifice your time. Take an hour or two a week and volunteer at a local organization that may need help. There are plenty of them right here in our own community. There are many elderly people who may have lost hope in the later years of their lives. Make it a point to visit with some of them. It will give them renewed hope.

“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.”

One thing that makes our community so unique is people’s willingness to help one another. So whether you lend a hand to an elderly person at the grocery store, volunteer for a few hours at a soup kitchen or just smile a little more at passers by, know that you are helping spread the Good news of the Easter season—hope!

NAVIGATING OUR CITIES: GIG HARBOR FINDING OUR WAY, PART TWO

LET’S SEE HOW MUCH you know about wayfinding in your own city by foot and watercraft. Pop Quiz: (Try not to cheat yourself! Take a moment right now, find paper and a pen.) 1. Name five docks or piers along the Harborview stretch that allow for public access to the water. Underline locations where you may launch your kayak. 2. Identify three spots to connect and learn about our marine habitat. Name the creature you found there. 3. List five places or routes to burn some calories while soaking up the sights. Describe what type of exercise you perform there. 4. Name three locations that showcase public art. Write one word that describes the piece. 5. Identify four historic buildings or locations. Label what makes them historic.

Underline the locations that allow for mindful solitude. Your answers to the quiz above describe your mental map of our city.

Meandering back toward the center of downtown, take in the historic Netsheds that adorn the shoreline. Have you ever read the Netshed map? How many can you identify by name? Stop by the Visitor Information Center at Skansie House and check out Harbor WildWatch’s underwater camera feed and interactive sandbox that teaches us how watersheds work. Find the beautiful water feature and public dock at nearby Arabella’s Landing Marina. Count the salmon in Donkey Creek and contribute to the citizen’s science box below the underpass.

If it’s been too long since you’ve experienced Downtown Gig Harbor, or you are entertaining out-of-town guests, you could plan a simple route. Most of the primary walking patterns occur along or near Harborview Drive. At one end, onlookers may peer over the remaining pilings at the Old Ferry Landing park, Check out the historic mural at the Finholm reminding us of times before the Galloping Market, climb the Finholm stairs and take in Gertie was constructed.PHOTOS THIS PAGE COURTESY the view from the top. Travel by boat, yours or theirs. Paddle out to the Lighthouse or head out on a boat tour full of sights and stories with Captain Tom. Maybe even scuba dive by Maritime Pier. (Word has it there is a sunken boat with much to see!) Lucky for us, there are even more ways to figure out wayfinding and public access in our downtown! If you haven’t already, check out the downtown Waterfront Walking Tours provided by the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, Harbor WildWatch and the Harbor History Museum. Participants will explore today’s harbor and local culture while hearing stories of the past and learning about local wildlife. Here are some OF the well- and not-so-wellknown locations that contain public access: Old Ferry Landing, Maritime Pier, Jerisich Dock, Arabella’s public pier (on Dorotich Street,) Ancich Park (future public amenity,) Eddon Boat Dock, Austin Estuary Park, Donkey Creek, Bogue Viewing Platform, the Finholm View Climb, Crescent Creek Park, Maritime PlayZone, the Lighthouse, Cushman Trail, Wilkinson Farm Park, Grandview Forest Park, and the skate park and greens at the Civic Center. What if we collect our stories and create a wonderful oral history that could accompany residents and visitors during walks and downtown adventures? The future of wayfinding could be greatly enhanced with the advent of walking apps—audio tours—and virtual walking maps to navigate our cities.

A resume lets you jump on opportunities. Life is full of surprises. Like the hottest new apartment rentals, good jobs are snatched off the market quickly. An updated resume keeps you agile and helps you get in the game without delay. Furthermore, if your network knows that you have a powerful and effective resume ready to hand in at a moment’s notice, your connections can become part of your outreach team and help you get your foot in the door when timing is essential.

5.

A resume keeps you engaged. Nearly every job involves interacting with others. If you’re a freelancer or a business owner, you need to maintain a healthy profit base by keeping present customers or key industry leaders connected to you. An updated, eye-catching resume shows you’re not taking clients’ loyalty for granted and that you’re staying up to date with all the latest industry trends to deliver added value.

WHAT IS THE NO. 1 PURPOSE you think of when you hear the word resume? Many people believe a resume is a piece of paper that you use in order to get a job, or something you quickly pull together after you’ve been fired. Technically, both are true, but a powerful and effective resume can do much more than convince people to interview you! Here’s how: 1.

5151 Borgen BLVD Suite 101C Gig Harbor, WA 98332

4.

3.

Your resume builds self-assurance. A fresh resume will always give you a new perspective on yourself. By taking an objective evaluation of your career, you can empower yourself to interview better, enhance your job performance or perhaps give you the encouragement you need to ask for that well-deserved raise or promotion. A resume attracts new business. A majority of business owners wrongly assume that they will never need or have to think about having a resume. Think again. If you’re self-employed or have a job that requires you to attract new customers, your resume is a key part of that persuasion and serves as a great starting point in garnering trust and building your brand. Therefore, the better you look on paper, the better your business looks. A resume is an insurance policy. The average American changes jobs about every 4.5 years. Whether the reason involves money, job satisfaction or being let go, having an updated resume in hand can give you the sense that

Additionally, a resume can highlight areas that need attention. When you look at your accomplishments, credentials, licenses, memberships, publications or awards through an HR lens, you might decide that you need to work on certain areas that position you more favorably for a new job, project or client base. People want to work and network with others who make their career a priority, and those who act with determination and focus. Maximize your business opportunities, career growth and personal brand with a resume that helps you stand out from the crowd.

Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

FINANCIAL FOCUS HELP PROTECT OLDER ADULTS FROM FINANCIAL ABUSE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, ERIN R. ABRIGO.

FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION costs older Americans billions of dollars per year, according to several sources, including the National Council on Aging. If you have older parents, could they be vulnerable to financial scams and rip-off artists? And, if so, what can you do to help protect them? Unfortunately, it is possible for anyone to become a victim. For a variety of reasons, older adults may be easier targets than younger people. And that is why, when interacting with your parents, you should look for these warning signs: • Suspicious new relationships – If your parent mentions something about a new friend, a romantic partner or some type of caregiver who seems to have taken a great interest in your parent’s financial situation, you may have reason to be suspicious. Do not be afraid to ask some questions. • Multiple checks written to same person or entity – If you think your parents may be making questionable financial moves, ask to see their checkbook. If you see several checks written to an unfamiliar person or business, you might be viewing evidence of a financial scam. If so, you will want to intercede before your parents get victimized again. • Changing power of attorney or beneficiaries –If your parents suddenly decide to name someone new as their “agent” (the person responsible for carrying out a power of attorney), you may need to investigate. And the same is true if your parents change the beneficiary designation on their investment accounts or insurance policies. • Unusual urgency to make an investment – If you learn that your parents want to make some type of investment “immediately,”

you should be concerned. No reputable financial professional would ever pressure them – or anyone else – to “act now” on an investment. Apart from watching out for the above signs of trouble, what else can you do to help guard your parents from fraudsters? For starters, urge your parents – repeatedly, if necessary – to never give out personal information over the phone or online. Scammers have gotten quite clever at impersonating legitimate businesses or organizations – for example, unless you are looking closely at the email, you might think the logo of a bank or another company is being accurately depicted. Again, though, reputable businesses typically don’t send messages that are demanding, threatening or otherwise employing some type of extreme language. Also, stress to your parents that they should never wire money to a random account. Plus, remind them about the truth of “no risk” offers: Any financial offer that sounds too good to be true is just that – untrue. Every legitimate investment carries both risks and rewards. Here’s another suggestion: Older adults who have debt problems may be especially vulnerable to offers that claim to “clear up” all their debts. But there’s no quick fix to this problem, and any caller who claims otherwise is likely being deceitful. Encourage your parents to discuss their debt situation with an honest, professional debt counselor or a financial advisor. Finally, if your parents don’t already work with a trusted, qualified financial professional, introduce them to one. Your parents worked hard all their lives. Do what you can to help them enjoy their “golden years” in dignity.

GO BIG, WITHOUT BURNOUT IS YOUR BUSINESS RUNNING YOU? BY DEBORAH OLIVE

LEADERSHIP

CABO SAN LUCAS, HERE WE COME!

nothing on their agenda but to go to the veranda for an appetizer, Sara’s smile warmed her through and through.

Arriving to sunny skies in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Sara and her husband marked the moment as an omen of good things to come. It had been a long, rainy winter in Seattle, and they looked forward to a break from their day-to-day life. They looked forward to the time they’d spend in the water and on the beach under the warm sun. This would be a very special trip, but not for the reasons Sara expected.

The next day, with sun streaming through the window, Sara and her husband grabbed a few things to take to the beach. Accustomed to thinking about her business all day and nearly every day, Sara picked up a book on leadership that she had packed. She hoped that lying in the sun would inspire a breakthrough on an issue that had come up with her staff. It wasn’t meant to be. Kicked back in a beach lounge chair with a towel, tanning lotion and a cool beverage, she opened her book and discovered she couldn’t focus on the words. She closed the book, looked at her handsome husband in the neighboring chair, shut her eyes and steadied her thoughts. A few minutes later, she opened the book again, but still couldn’t focus. In that moment, it hit her. She really did need a vacation, and she put her book down. For the next six days, she and her husband went snorkeling, soaked up the sun, enjoyed the sights and their time together.

Nearly four years ago, Sara started a business. She worked 60 to 70 hours a week—often more—to turn her dream of serving clients into a successful startup. 2016 was a good year, and her young business had a steady stream of quality clients Sara enjoyed. Her income paid business expenses, provided a salary that surpassed that of her corporate career, supported growing the business and reduced the debt she incurred in the early days. She felt good about having stashed away money for this getaway to Mexico. As she and her husband settled into their room with

The last day in Cabo, her husband looked at her across their table and said, “Before our vacation, I didn’t know if I wanted to spend an entire week alone with you, because I didn’t know which Sara would show up: the playful woman I married or the business woman I see nearly every day. I’m glad you showed up.”

RUN THE RACE

Sara was fortunate. She put down her book to be present to her life just in time. She recognized her husband’s words as a wakeup call, and they talked about the changes they’d make when they returned to their Seattle home. Sara adjusted her schedule to set time aside with her husband to do the things they both enjoy. Just as important, she set time aside to cultivate her playful and creative nature, trusting her efforts to serve her marriage, her personal interests and her business. In fact, as she makes these changes, she’s committed to having it all.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

TAKE A WALK AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Great Strides walk benefits those with cystic fibrosis. By Patty Hutchens

THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, when Lily was born, she was immediately diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Her parents were told it was fatal and she would not likely live through her teen years. Thankfully, today, Lily continues to defy the odds. Although her days include two-hour therapy sessions to ensure her lungs are as healthy as possible, Lily still pursues her passion of soccer and being a “normal” teenager.

longer, healthier lives and pursuing their dreams. But still, the lives of people with this disease are still cut far too short.” This year those involved hope to raise more than $90,000, adding to the $1.2 million that Gig Harbor has raised to date. This year’s event will take place Saturday, May 6, at the Rush Companies/ Park Plaza in Gig Harbor. It will be a day of fun for the whole family and includes a celebration of the fundraising success. There will be entertainment, sponsor booths and giveaways, music and many other exciting activities. The 3.5-mile walk will be out and back along the Cushman Trail. After the walk, you won’t want to miss the delicious lunch provided by BJ’s Restaurant and Brewery! It is free and open to the public. Registration begins at 10am and the walk begins at 11am.

For the past 11 years, Gig Harbor has taken part in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event, Great Strides. Each year, more than 125,000 people participate in hundreds of walks across the country to support the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and raise awareness for the rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that makes it difficult to breathe. And the efforts are making a significant impact on those who suffer from cystic fibrosis. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is leading the way in innovative research and drug development, promoting high-quality, individualized care and helping people with CF live better todays,” said Heather Paulson, Lily’s mother. “Nearly every CF drug was made possible by the foundation, and because of funds raised from Great Strides, people with CF are living

“Great Strides provides a great opportunity for people within the community to get involved in a great cause,” said Heather. “Participants can form walk teams at their workplace, through their clubs and organizations, or with friends and family.”

THE HOUSING MARKET in the greater Seattle area these days is, for lack of a better word, crazy. Move-in ready homes at all price ranges are often receiving multiple cash offers, and buyers have to move extremely fast to lock something in, sometimes without even a guaranteed inspection. It would be a stroke of sheer luck to find your dream home with the amenities you want, in your style and taste, in such a frenzied market. Perhaps instead of searching for your dream home, it’s time you build one yourself. David Pool AIA, licensed architect of David Pool Architecture, has been in the business for decades; he can design a home that perfectly fits your needs and budget. Before becoming his own business in 2015, Pool worked in commercial and educational design for 24 years. During his time over the years with various firms, he took part on the Stadium High School renovation, the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, and the Pacific Plaza parking garage renovation.

When starting the home-design process, Pool engages clients to fully understand who they are, how they live and what is important to them in the design of their home. This design process ultimately creates a home that reflects each client’s personal lifestyle and goals. While the thought of making numerous decisions and working with construction and contractors can sound daunting, Pool is able to help put clients at ease having designed his own family home and experienced the process firsthand. “This experience gives me a unique insight to a clients psyche, and I can sympathize with them at every step in the process,” said Pool. His unique talent is providing counsel to his clients so they can navigate through the tough design and construction challenges, which ultimately provide clients peace of mind. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, the thought of owning his own business was never far from Pool’s mind. Both of his grandfathers were master builders and developed homes while his mother started a business out of the family garage. After working for a continually expanding mid-sized firm, Pool decided the time had come to pursue his dreams. “This entrepreneurial spirit tugged at my heart,” said Pool, “and I decided to make a career

shift to follow my dream of starting my own architectural firm that would specialize in custom high-end contemporary residential projects.” Pool and his family enjoy what many others have come to delight in in the Pacific Northwest: fishing and boating, playing soccer with the kids, skiing in winter and hiking in the summer. He is happy to continue to call the Northwest home. If you’re ready to take the next step in building and designing the home of your dreams, Pool would love to hear your ideas. He will listen thoughtfully and come up with a plan that fits your needs and your budget. “I pride myself in listening, collaboration and ultimately assisting owners to envision their dream home.”

FEW THINGS CAUSE MORE PARENTAL ANGST than finding the right fit for their child’s first school experience. Preschool often begins as early as age 2 to 3, and pre-kindergarten programs are common for 4- and 5-year-olds. Parents want preschool to be fun, safe, enriching and meaningful; we want our beloved “littles” to be delighted, challenged, understood and inspired. With the uniquely tailored experiences available for young learners today, parents increasingly seek to extend the intimate, play-based learning of preschool through kindergarten and beyond. Families also seek integrated community programs for all ages through their children’s schools. All of these choices are available right here in Gig Harbor!

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Nestled in a peaceful neighborhood, this cozy school harbors big dreams; 125 big dreams, to be exact. This year, those 125 students ranging from infants to teenagers joined teachers and parents in celebrating the school’s 35th anniversary. Harbor Montessori offers programs for infants all the way through middle school. It is operating at close to maximum enrollment, with waitlists for the infant and toddler programs. In fact, Jenna Brasch, admissions and programming director, counsels families who prioritize a Montessori experience for their child to consider applying even before conception! What exactly is the Montessori approach, you may wonder? Head of School Aimee Allen explains it this way: “The Montessori philosophy is built around the idea that human beings are wired to learn. Our curiosity and desire to acquire knowledge form the foundation of every Montessori classroom. We intentionally prepare an environment of high-quality options, so that every choice a child makes is educational. The Montessori Method

is over 100 years old, yet it lines up perfectly with today’s discoveries by neuropsychologists on how we learn.” She adds, “Giving children freedom along with responsibility not only helps them become excellent scholars, but also excellent human beings.” Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be involved at Harbor Montessori. Jennifer Beard, whose son and daughter are both enrolled, comments on the benefits of a family inclusive practice: “I appreciate the tight-knit, supportive community. The kids form close bonds through multi-age classrooms, mentoring opportunities and small class sizes. Likewise, the parents develop close friendships by volunteering together, chaperoning field trips and visiting through activities around school. I have the privilege of knowing my children’s friends, their parents, and the teachers and staff. It forms a supportive net for all of us.” As for Dr. Maria Montessori’s methods, Beard gives top marks. “A Montessori education encourages a desire to look outward to understand global cultures and helps our children find their own special niche in the world. The core concept is that children are naturally eager for knowledge

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

and are capable of initiating learning in a supportive environment. I certainly can say that is true. My children voluntarily conduct research projects at home and continue their learning as part of their play. Dreams have launched, including ideas for a novel, travel plans to Antarctica and a doctorate degree at MIT. Of course, their dreams may change over time, but I hope their capacity to dream continues to grow.” Think Harbor Montessori might be the right fit for you? Interested families can peruse the school’s website at HarborMontessori.org, or call the office at 253.851.5722 to schedule a tour or a classroom observation. You’d be remiss though if you assumed the school was contained within the building, because roughly half of every day is spent outdoors. outside rain or shine. Our students take laundry home every day! It is important that families are on board with that philosophy—that the kids will get to be kids, outside. They are going to get muddy, and the parents don’t mind at all.”

As the school’s name describes, Curious by Nature’s curriculum springs from children’s natural enthusiasm for investigating the outdoors. Enveloped in Gig Harbor’s natural beauty, early learners explore seasons, plants, animals, ecosystems, weather, habitats, people and cultures. Curriculum is STEM based (science, engineering, technology and math) with the understanding that “technology” refers to any tool, such as a lever made from a stick or a trowel to plant vegetables.

The school offers morning and afternoon halfday programs for toddlers, preschool and pre-k with class sizes of 10 to 14. Homeschoolers and other students ages 3 to 6 may enroll in the oncea-week Friday Enrichment class. Families can also participate through weekend events and summer camps. The Junior Explorer Club offers monthly Family Nature Walks on Saturdays, and periodic Lunch with a Scientist events that include a guest speaker and a workshop on an environmental topic. The Junior Explorer Club is open to enrolled families and also other families in the community.

“We teachers are here to follow the child’s interests to facilitate learning. We encourage kids to ask questions and make observations. We work together to visually document those observations through art projects, pictures and photos, to make the process of learning visible,” says Odette Alina, the school’s director. “We’re

Old-World

Wines Rare winemaking done in our own backyard BY COLIN ANDERSON

Husband and wife Stuart Chisholm and Mary Ellen Houston chose to get out of the congestion of Seattle and find a more peaceful way of life. An opportunity to take over the Olalla Vineyard presented itself, and the couple purchased the establishment on December 30, 2015, and officially re-opened for business on June 4, 2016. What makes Olalla special amongst many others wineries is the use of clay amphorae to ferment its wines. “Olalla incorporates the use of handcrafted clay Italian amphorae into the winemaking process, thus binding the grape fermentation to the earth from which the grapes were borne,” explains Houston. “This ancient winemaking method, used by the Greeks and Romans for centuries, creates clean, fruit-forward wines that replicate the best of the classic, Old-World style vintages.” Upon arrival at the Olalla Vineyard, you will feel at peace in its natural setting that includes gardens and streams, overlooking the Puget Sound. Olalla Vineyard and Winery sits on

six acres, of which nearly half is used to grow the grapes to produce their estate wines. “The Olalla Vineyard grows Golubok, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, Viognier, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer,” says Houston. The winery also produces non-estate wines in which they purchase grapes from other growers from Red Mountain, Yakima Valley and the Columbia Valley, among others. Master winemaker Matthew Loso oversees production at the boutique winery to ensure the quality of each wine produced. With such a beautiful property, Stuart and Mary Ellen have opened it up to all kinds of events as well. Wedding ceremonies and receptions, birthday parties, company retreats, business meetings and other private celebrations can all be arranged. The Tasting Room is open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5pm, May through October. During the summer months, you will often experience live music and concerts while you sample or sip on a glass of wine. Some wines age longer than others, but expected to be released this year include the 2015 Red Mountain Malbec and Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Estate Pinot Noir and the hardto-find 2016 Estate Golubok. This is Olalla’s flagship wine with grape origins believed to be from Eastern Europe including Croatia, Russia and the Ukraine. Though Olalla has only been their home for less than a year, the couple is already very active in the tight-knit community. Mary Ellen is a member of the Positive Olalla Projects group which encourages, celebrates and supports the people in the Olalla community

WASHINGTON STATE IS well-known for its incredible number of vineyards, wineries and vast growing regions. We are second only to California when it comes to domestic production, and wineries across the state are racking up awards of all kinds. Many different grapes are grown across the state, giving enthusiasts a virtually unlimited amount of styles and blends from which to find their favorites. There are a few ways to ferment those grapes into wine, but at the Olalla Vineyard, you’ll taste wines produced like nowhere else in Washington.

through local service projects, events and activities. Olalla Vineyard and Winery also supports several local charities and non-profits such as Communities in Schools of Peninsula, South Kitsap High School, Miss Pierce County Scholarship Program and Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Community Services. A trip to the Olalla Vineyard will relax the soul. You’ll enjoy a peaceful setting and wines made in similar fashion to those made in ancient Italy and Greece. Check in often this summer to hear about new releases, dinners in the vineyard, and upcoming local musicians and concerts. Swirl, sip and unwind at one of the truly special wineries in our state.

SETH WAHTO: Peninsula High School THERE IS NO DOUBT Peninsula High School senior, Seth Wahto, has what it takes to succeed in wrestling. He has been on the varsity wrestling team for four years and serves as the team captain. He has placed first at district, second at regionals and third at state. But the 17-year-old shares that the journey has not always been easy. “My biggest challenge I faced throughout my highschool career came my junior year,” said Seth, who was ranked eighth in the state at the time. “Approaching the road to the state tournament, I tore my right shoulder.” He attempted to keep wrestling and tried to finish off the season. Unfortunately, he fell short of his goal of competing at the state tournament. “This came as a crushing blow,” said Seth. “After a couple months of physical therapy, my shoulder was vastly improved. I used this

setback as my motivation for the senior year to push myself harder than I ever had during high school.” Seth’s future plans include attending community college. He is unsure of a career but expresses interest in a variety of professions, including being a firefighter and EMT or possibly pursuing a skill-based trade such as carpentry. “My main goal with my future career is to be able to help people out. From saving lives as a firefighter to building homes in Third World countries, I want to be able to change people’s lives for the better,” he said. Seth is grateful to his coaches who have taught him how to go through life with confidence. The discipline that wrestling requires makes him feel that he can do anything he sets his mind to.

CHAD STEVENS: Gig Harbor High School BALANCING ATHLETICS, academics and a social life is never easy. But Chad Stevens of Gig Harbor High School has managed to do it well, and it has paid off. The 18-year-old senior has been on the varsity baseball team for the past three years and maintains a 3.9 GPA, which includes three honors and AP classes. Chad plays the position of middle field and was second team all league his junior year. “I played on the Mariner Scout baseball team this fall and have played for Narrows Baseball for the last six years,” shared Chad, who was also honorable-mention West Coast for Perfect Game baseball. “I have also played two years on the high school varsity basketball team where I earned honorable mention all league as a senior.”

Portland where he will play baseball. Chad said he is interested in pursuing a career in business and finance and would like to work in a sports-related field if possible. He said one of the biggest challenges in sports has been the fact he often played up, so he was not as strong and mature as his older teammates. “This taught me to persevere and learn through challenges,” said Chad. He has enjoyed the opportunity to play sports on both his high school and tournament teams with those he considers to be his best friends. Chad has learned much more than just how to play baseball; it has taught him a life lesson he will carry with him to college and beyond: “The one lesson I have learned from sports is that hard work pays off, and nothing can replace it.”

Maritime goes high-tech with Harbor WildWatch exhibit at historic Skansie House By Dan Aznoff

THE VISITOR FROM THE MIDWEST stood silently in front of the most popular display at the Harbor WildWatch exhibit at the Skansie Information and Interpretive Center. In a single motion, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone to capture photographic evidence of his childhood memories. “I really need to send pictures of this to my brother,” the man exclaimed. “This is exactly what we wanted to create as children; only this one is digital.” Executive Director Lindsay Stover said adults enjoy interactive play with the augmented sandbox almost as much as children. “This sandbox uses state-of-the art computer graphics and 3D-projection imagery to make this the sandbox of your wildest childhood imagination,” said Rachel Easton, who serves as education director for Harbor WildWatch. “This sandbox provides visitors a hands-on opportunity to explore the watershed of their creation. The sophisticated technology projects changes in the topography of the sand in real time.” The sandbox is lined with 8 to 9 inches of malleable sand to encourage visitors

to get their hands dirty. The exhibit, Easton said, exemplifies the Harbor WildWatch motto of Learn. Have Fun. Easton explained the sandbox allows kids of all ages to dig rivers, bays and lakes, or pile sand into hills and mountains. When they are finished building an environment, the builders can let the virtual rain water collect on the landscape to determine the impact on the watersheds that are vital components to a healthy Puget Sound. Images of the innovative topographies are displayed on large flat-screen TV monitors above the sandbox. Three Surface Tablets allow visitors to learn more about potential man-made hazards to marine mammals and wildlife. Each computer offers steps that individuals can take to protect native plants and wildlife. The high-tech sandbox is one of three new exhibits opened inside the original 1920 Skansie Family Home in March. Funding for the permanent displays came from a $25,000 grant from the Ben B. Cheney Foundation designed to attract more visitors to the Skansie Brothers Park to experience Gig Harbor’s natural and cultural history firsthand. Popular field trip “This is what hands-on learning is all about,” said Stover. “For school-aged children who live anywhere near the Puget Sound, this is like playing in their own backyard.” Stover hopes the permanent exhibit will boost the mission of the organization to protect the vulnerable waters of the Puget Sound and enhance the quality of life for the fish and mammals that live in and around Gig Harbor. The director emphasized that every display presented by the conservation organization includes an underlying message of respect and conservation of the life that depends on the quality of water in the Puget Sound. The Harbor WildWatch presentation is a much larger, high-tech version of the popular mobile exhibit that has been a mainstay of the Summer Sounds concert series and the Waterfront Farmers Market in Gig Harbor for more than a decade. The permanent exhibit housed in the Skansie House includes a 100-gallon version of the popular touch tank. Everybody enjoys the study feel of the exterior

of a sea star and the “squishy spikes of a sea cucumber,” said Stover. “This new setting gives us a year-round location to welcome visitors, as well as provide education for students at every grade level.” Stover is confident the new exhibits will boost the number of classrooms that visit the Interpretive Center for field trips every year from its current number of 300. The third exhibit inside the old house provides visitors a fish-eye view of what is swimming and crawling around the waters of Gig Harbor Bay. Onlookers will find microscopes with rotating educational projects and an impressive collection of skulls, including a recently-donated juvenile gray whale skull on loan from NOAA. Other craniums on display include sea otters and sea lions, as well as land animals that live near the shores of the Puget Sound such as coyotes and black bears. The perspective, said Stover, allows visitors to know what it’s like to survive under the waters of Gig Harbor, scavenging for food and hiding from predators. The live underwater cameras are connected to another set of flat-screen TVs mounted above the exhibit. Stover said links to the

underwater camera will soon be available on the Harbor WildWatch website, HarborWildWatch.org, and the City of Gig Harbor at CityOfGigHarbor.net. The Harbor WildWatch executive grew up just across the Narrows in University Place and has been affiliated with the non-profit organization for five years, serving as executive director for the past four. She remembers that her parents kept their boat moored in Gig Harbor, where she created memories sailing on top of and swimming in the waters of the harbor. She and her husband now make their home in Gig Harbor. “The exhibit will allow us to connect with our community on a more consistent basis, and will also be the foundation for more in-house classes and programs,” said Stover. The Interpretive Center will begin to offer free drop-in science programs led by a naturalist from Harbor WildWatch beginning this summer. Additional Storybook Science programs for the preschool are set to begin next fall to support early literacy, science and fun, hands-on interactive play with the sandbox and touch tanks.

The organization’s mission is to inform residents and visitors about local marine life and elicit their involvement in preserving our natural resources. The Skansie Information and Interpretive Center switched to its longer summer hours April 1. The Center is open every Wednesday through Saturday 10am to 4pm through the end of September.

Bucket Drive and determination fuels local business growth BY COLIN ANDERSON

KEEPING THE HOUSE CLEAN is an ongoing challenge. Factor in rainy weather, children and pets, and it’s a daily ritual for most of us. We scrub floors, vacuum rooms and hallways, wash pots and pans, and try our best to keep the bathrooms sparkling. It makes sense we spend the most hours cleaning inside as this is where we spend the majority of our time. However, it’s important not to forget about the exterior of your home, and for most of us it’s a job we simply can’t do well. Climbing high on ladders or getting up onto the roof are dangerous propositions, and when these are the places that need cleaned, it’s best to call in the experts. One of those local experts is Steve Greco of Clean and Clear Windows here in Gig Harbor. Greco opened his own business in June 2014 when he decided he wanted a better life for his family. “I knew I needed to do something bigger to get my kids into a nice neighborhood with good schools, so I started out with a minivan, a ladder, a bucket and some squeegees working out of an apartment,” says Greco. When he wasn’t on a job, he was going door to door around town, introducing himself personally and letting neighbors know of his services. That hard work and determination has paid off as Greco has gone from simple tools to a fullservice cleaning business. “We provide detailed quality window cleaning, roof cleaning, gutter cleaning, moss removal and moss treatments, pressure washing and holiday lighting, and our No. 1 goal is customer service and satisfaction,” Greco says.

In areas such as ours, moss thrives, and as it builds it can begin to damage your roof. Having Clean and Clear Windows gently clean away the moss will help prevent possible damage but also beautify your home. Your gutters can also fill with all kinds of debris, and if they are not draining properly can begin to overflow and sometimes do serious damage to your siding; just another service Greco and his staff are highly experienced and qualified to take care of for you. Clean and Clear always uses environmentally safe cleaning products and gentle pressure washing as to not damage your roof, siding, patio, driveway, sport court or whatever else you are having cleaned. With freshly cleaned, streak-free windows, you’ll be amazed at how much more natural light will enter your home. Despite adding employees, Greco is involved in just about every job the company takes on; further proof of his dedication to the business.

“Of course I wouldn’t have been successful without my great customers who gave me a chance. And I really appreciate every job no matter the size,” he says. “A big driving force for me was my family, so I could give them the life they deserve.” Greco also wants to give back to his community and donates his services to the JJ House, a place for homeless teens in our area. Whether removing moss from your roof, clogs from your gutters or brightening your home’s windows or exterior, Clean and Clean Windows will do a professional job and guarantee it with a 100-percent customer-satisfaction guarantee. If you can’t remember the last time your home’s exterior was cleaned, it’s time for a call to the professionals. Estimates are always free, and you’ll be supporting a local business committed to the local community.

Health & Lifestyle SIT TO GET FIT

Sprint Interval Training By Matt Thompson, Better Gym, Gig Harbor

HAVE YOU EVER STARTED an exercise program that focuses on your cardiovascular fitness, such as a running or walking plan, only to find that every workout feels long and arduous, causing you to lose motivation and end up quitting? What if there was a way to get all those benefits of running with only one-fifth the time commitment; would you be interested? I know it might sound too good to be true, but let me introduce you to sprint interval training. Before we learn more about SIT, let’s go over a few of the reasons why a healthy cardiovascular system is important. Many people begin exercise programs to lose weight, and that is something cardiovascular exercise has been proven to do, even better than strength training alone.

With little to no change in diet, endurance exercise can decrease your body-fat percentage. More than just looking better, improvements to cardiovascular health make you feel better. They decrease your risk for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and lower your chance for early death. Beyond increasing your body’s health, it is also great for your mind. Studies have shown it can improve mood, decrease stress, improve quality of sleep and reduce your risk for dementia and other cognitive diseases. However, you need to exercise five to six days a week for more than 30 minutes each session to obtain most of these benefits. This adds up to two to three hours of exercise per week, which can feel like too much

H E A LT H Y T I P

Curb Your Sweet Tooth Got a late-night sugar craving that just won't quit? Think fruit first! time to take out of our busy work and family schedules. But, you can get those same benefits with just 10 minutes of exercise per day, with a total time commitment less than one hour a week, with SIT. SIT is normally defined as four to six rounds of “all-out” exercise for 30 seconds or less followed by a rest period that is at least five times longer than the duration of the exercise, usually about three to four minutes. This protocol might sound familiar to another form of exercise that has gained popularity in the media known as high-intensity interval training, also known as HIIT. In fact, SIT is considered a sub-set of HIIT workouts, but it takes even less time, and some people adhere to the program better because of the shorter length of the work intervals. HIIT can be overly demanding because they don’t allow your body to recover between exercises, which doesn’t allow you to go all-out with every rep. The reason why so little time can be committed to exercise for a similar level of cardiovascular benefits is because there is a “dose-dependent” relationship to exercise. This means that your body makes greater adaptations the harder you work. An hour of 50-percent effort will produce similar results to a 100-percent effort for as little as two minutes. Much of the research about SIT discusses that high-intensity training is one of the best stimulators for health changes, most importantly the metabolic profile of your muscles. This isn’t to discount the importance of

traditional endurance exercise. It still gives you important health benefits, can increase your work capacity and create permanent changes that improve your muscle health. In addition, if your goal is to run a distance race, like a half marathon, you should still focus on traditional endurance exercise. The goal of this article is to show that SIT can be a time-effective alternative to endurance exercise for those only focused on the health benefits of aerobic exercise. Now that you are interested, how do you go about performing a sprint-interval workout? 1. Find a class with an instructor who knows how to give you the proper level of intensity. We happen to have one here at Better. 2. Go to the track, do a dynamic warm up for about 10 to 20 minutes, sprint the length of the track as hard as you can, then walk the remainder of the track until you get back to where you started the sprint. Repeat four to six times. 3. Find a hill you can run up, run as hard as possible for 30 seconds, walk back down and don’t start again for at least three minutes. Repeat four to six times. Matt Thompson is a personal trainer and running coach at Better Gym and is the assistant manager at Route 16 Running and Walking. He is a Certified Personal Trainer, has his B.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Puget Sound, and is currently working toward his master’s in Kinesiology.

SLEEPING AND EATING

SLEEP AND WEIGHT GAIN HOW I LOST 3 POUNDS IN ONE WEEKEND BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS

DO YOU EVER DEPRIVE YOURSELF of sleep, then find yourself grabbing food or drinks—especially caffeine—to stay awake? Or find yourself working hard all day, doing the things you must, and when you finally have the chance to sleep, you’re wound up like a top? Do you have an issue with worry, insomnia or clenching and grinding? I’ve experienced all of the above and have lost weight simply from a better night’s sleep. Research shows that women need seven to eight hours of sleep a night, and men need an additional hour or more to truly feel rested. What really annoys me is that I can gain weight simply by not sleeping enough. That’s because two hormones, ghrelin and leptin, get thrown off kilter, as do many more hormones and enzymes, if you don’t get adequate sleep. Do you have stomach acid reflux or heartburn? This can be caused by not getting the quality sleep you need. Do you have high blood pressure or blood-sugar level issues? Do you have a history of cardiovascular disease, stroke or arthritis pain? So what’s this all about? Quite frankly, just between you and me, sleeping and eating can be a hassle. But by design, they are not meant to be. Weight gain and difficulty with weight loss is an issue if we don’t sleep; hormones and enzymes are regulated at night. You might think you’re sleeping, but your cells are wide awake cleansing and reestablishing your regulatory system.

There are many reasons why you may not sleep well and suffer from lack of oxygen at night: • Limited airway due to a high vault to the roof of your mouth • Extracted teeth as a young person, changing the shape of your mouth • Sinus issues • Large tonsils, uvula or broad tonsillar pillars • An overbite or overjet • Weight • The size of your neck • Genetics • Medications or alcohol use Did you know that one out of 10 people in the U.S. over the age of 12 are taking antidepressants? Antidepressants can cause a dry mouth, resulting in more decay, plus cause more clenching and grinding. Something else to consider: Patients taking antidepressants can also have a higher risk of implant failure, based on current research. Patients who don’t sleep well often suffer more

from headaches and jaw pain as well. Begin with an oral exam and x-rays. Patients with sleep issues often have more cavities and gum disease. Then consider undergoing a sleep study. You can do this in the comfort of your own home, as the home tests are very accurate. Results are then read by a board-certified sleep physician, who will offer you your options based on your diagnosis.

RINGING IN YOUR EARS? UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING TINNITUS BY CAMRON MEIKLE, AUD, BOARD CERTIFIED AUDIOLOGIST, WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY THE AMERICAN TINNITUS Association and the CDC state 50 million Americans experience “ringing in the ears.” Tinnitus is not a disease, but a reaction within the auditory system and parts of the brain that process sound. This reaction creates the perception of sound when no actual external sound is present. Tinnitus is one of the most common health conditions in the country and the No. 1 servicerelated disability among U.S. veterans. Most individuals with tinnitus find their symptoms to be simple annoyances. Yet millions report having disabling symptoms that interfere with sleep, social activities or work. Economic consequences of tinnitus are significant and cost society an estimated $26 billion annually. Tinnitus is not always ringing in the ears. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant, pulsatile, monaural or binaural, temporary or chronic. People hear hissing, static, crickets or buzzing, which can be quiet as a whisper or loud enough to impede daily activities. Only people with hearing loss have tinnitus. Tinnitus can occur without hearing loss. Tinnitus can manifest from many other health conditions as well: obstruction of the ear, head or neck trauma, temporomandibular joint disorders, sinus pressure, barometric trauma, traumatic brain injury, medications, metabolic/autoimmune/vestibular disorders and tumors. Individuals between the ages of 60 and 69 have the highest prevalence rates. Other high-risk include: Caucasians, males, active military, veterans, employees working in loud environments, musicians, and people who participate in loud recreation activities like motorsports or hunting. There is no cure, so I just must learn to live with it. Many patients still operate with the belief that nothing can be done for their tinnitus. While there is still no scientifically proven cure for most types of tinnitus, many treatment options

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

58

do exist that reduce the hardship of tinnitus. Each case of tinnitus is different, and the best treatment usually involves implementing multiple strategies: • General Wellness: A healthy lifestyle and diet supports better auditory function. • Hearing Instruments: These devices treat hearing loss and can mask tinnitus sound by augmenting environmental noise, forcing the brain to focus on the external sounds. • Sound Therapies: Numerous products are available that use one or more effective mechanisms of action (masking, distraction, habituation and neuromodulation). • Behavioral Therapies: Various therapies address the emotional and behavioral response to their tinnitus, such as relaxation, mindfulness and coping techniques learned by working with a trained therapist. • Drug Therapies: No drug is FDA-approved specifically for tinnitus, and there are no medications shown to reverse the neural hyperactivity thought to be the root cause of tinnitus. Treatment Steps: Unless provoked by a traumatic physical event (head/neck trauma), tinnitus is rarely indicative of an emergency medical condition. However, patients with tinnitus symptoms lasting beyond a week or who are bothered significantly by their symptoms should seek medical care from their primary care provider to rule out any medical condition that can cause tinnitus. The PCP plays an important role in referring patients to a specialist with specific capacities in managing tinnitus, which may include an audiologist, otolaryngologist or behavioral therapist. Tinnitus is a diverse condition unique to each patient, and successful treatment and management requires clinical evaluation and multidisciplinary intervention.

A DIFFERENT WAY OF LIVING

A LOT TO LEARN

MY LIFE IN THE NETHERLANDS BY DAVID ANGELL, DC, CONVERGENT THERAPIES

LIVING IN THE NETHERLANDS was a humbling experience. I moved there with my girlfriend, Kate, right after I graduated from chiropractic school. I felt optimistic, despite having only a rudimentary grasp on the language, that I could learn Dutch within six months of being there. I felt optimistic that I could make my way through the sea of immigration, cultural differences and language, on top of starting a new profession and building a practice. I had a lot to learn. Through a combination of luck and diligence, we got through initial hurdles such as Kate not getting a work visa right away and getting my chiropractic license recognized. In time, my practice grew but the language was a constant roadblock for me. After two and a half years, I felt more confident as a chiropractor, but I could not see myself staying in the Netherlands for the long term. It was at this point that we decided to move back to the Pacific Northwest and begin our lives again with the support of Dr. Chau here at Convergent Therapies. The two questions I get asked most about the Netherlands is, “What is the same?” or “What is different?” I’ll start with the differences, since I find it nicer to end with the similarities. The most striking difference with Dutch culture is the lack of standing out. While Americans stereotypically want to stand out, the Dutch have a famous proverb: “Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg!” In English, that translates to, “Just act normal, that’s crazy enough!” The people will often tell each other to “be normal,” meaning “follow our unspoken rules on how to behave.” As a result, Dutchmen blend in as much as possible. Dutch people consider Americans to be “extreme.” We have extreme sports, extreme people and we do extreme things. They have “normal” sports, “normal” people and “normal” things, and they are

because quality of life is earned. very happy in this way. It is this difference which gives reference to the other difference such as politics, culture and infrastructure. For the most part, we are the same. Most of the ideals which we may think are uniquely American are shared by the Dutch. They have an incredible drive for freedom, peace, justice and the pursuit of happiness just like we do. They are trying to lead the world in their own way, just like us. They have great successes, as do we. They have great failures, and so do we. We have a lot to gain from learning more about them and incorporating some of the things they do well. They have a beautiful country which is full of cows and sheep with towns sprinkled relatively evenly throughout. There are virtually no homeless people. Health care was a fraction of the cost as what I pay now. They have a wonderfully maintained infrastructure for cars, bikes and public transit, which can take you anywhere in the country. If you have not been to the Netherlands, I highly recommend it.

MARCH 20TH MARKS THE TIME of year when the hours of darkness roughly equal the hours of light; when the sun crosses over the equator in its slow progression north from the Southern Hemisphere. After a long winter, we all applaud the Vernal Equinox, ushering in spring’s longer days and warmer temperatures. The various melodies of songbirds are a welcome sign of things to come. Spring, the season of rebirth, usually April, May and June, brings a flurry of activity to the diverse mosaic of habitats—mountain tops, river valleys, wetlands, lakes, ocean—across the Pacific Northwest. Humans shake off winter’s cobwebs and replace heavy coats and boots with jackets, tennis shoes and sandals. Being outside in the sun, taking in some Vitamin D, lifts everyone’s spirits. Watching wildlife, one of the most popular types of outdoor recreation in the Northwest, as well as the rest of the country, is popular throughout the year, but the springtime is the time to see young animals. The antics of wild youngsters often make us smile as we cheer them on as they learn what to eat, what to avoid and where to live. Every spring I am always keen to get out, especially early in the morning, to take in all the “wild” activity. My dogs are usually with me, so I keep a vigilant eye on them; they are curious and busy checking out all of the activity, too. In my neck of the woods, I am prepared for fawns quietly curled up in the tall grass or under a bush, songbirds darting off a nest full of eggs, a mother moose with calf just off the road (best to make an abrupt about face here) and an assortment of other moms and babies. The rule around my place, except in very rare circumstances, is to let babies be. Even though it may appear they are on their own, I know mom is close by. By the time we get around to our evening walk, the babies have reconnected

with mom and have moved on. Often when people come across a wild baby, their initial thought is that the baby has been abandoned. This is rarely the case. Mom is usually close by feeding, resting or finding food for the baby; after all, she needs to take care of herself in order to take care of her baby. You may not see mom, but she may be keeping an eye on you. It is normal for a young animal to lay quietly hidden, sometimes for an extended amount of time. In some cases, mom staying away is a protective measure; the baby doesn’t have any scent but mom does, which may draw predators to the baby she is trying to protect. Also, keep in mind that mothers can be protective and may become aggressive if they interpret your behavior as predatory. Kidnapping the baby not only causes angst for the mother, but it also reduces the likelihood that the baby will survive. In the rare case where there is certainty that the mother is not coming back, orphaned or injured wild animals can be taken to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Skilled rehabilitators are adept at assessing and repairing injuries. However, many of these animals arrive in poor condition, and proper nutrition is critical for the animal to thrive and recover. Young animals that do survive typically lack survival skills and may have lost the fear of humans. Kathleen St. Clair-McGee, founder of American Heritage Wildlife Foundation in Clark Fork, Idaho, is a registered rehabilitator who works primarily with nongame animals. St. ClairMcGee is very cognizant of the negative effects that excess human contact brings, so she and her dedicated volunteers are specifically trained to limit animal-human interactions to prevent imprinting. Additionally, American Heritage has uniquely designed facilities that follow national guidelines to minimize human contact. The goal is to return rehabbed animals,

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

61

which must be physically and mentally ready, back to the wild. “A 35-percent release rate is good,” says St. Clair-McGee. “We often exceed 30-percent.” Wildlife rehabilitation is a 24/7 job. “May through August and sometimes into September are the busiest months,” says St. Clair-McGee. “The average number of hours spent caring for the animals is about 4,000 a year, about 80 hours per week. Some animals need to be fed every 15 minutes for 16 hours a day.” In 2016, American Heritage took in 80 different cases, consisting of 121 individuals and comprising 38 different species. The average number of cases per year is 50. It is a lifestyle that requires knowledge of species’ specific natural history, diet, rehabilitation requirements and caging. St. Clair-McGee’s years of experience working at the Dallas Zoo and Western North Carolina Nature Center provides a solid base for the life of a wildlife rehabilitator. St. Clair-McGee networks with other rehabilitators who are licensed, permitted and qualified. Networking with other facilities keeps the animals’ best interest in mind when an individual needs to be transferred to a rehabber who specializes in species-specific care. Mystic Farms in Sagle specializes in caring for deer. Birds of Prey Northwest in St. Maries has highly skilled rehabbers who work with all species of raptors. State and federal permits are required to house and care for these animals. It is against the law to keep wild animals captive. The financial commitment to rehabilitate wild animals is substantial. American Heritage, like most wildlife rehabilitation facilities, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported entirely by donations, personal funds and grants. St. Clair-McGee explains, “American Heritage needs about $10,000 a year just to care

for the animals. Grants can’t be used for operational purposes.” Therefore, garnering community support and being creative help fill some of the funding gaps. On the American Heritage website (AHWF.org), she lists a number of ways the public can contribute. In addition to the website, illustrated children’s books, that St. Clair-McGee created, are sold locally to raise funds.

imagination to craft exhibits focusing on the marine life in Puget Sound. For many people, aquatic environments are unfamiliar, and they are completely unaware of what goes on beneath the water’s surface. Harbor WildWatch offers a variety of unique interactive activities for all ages that are designed to be educational and fun, and get people excited about the marine environment.

St. Clair-McGee founded American Heritage 14 years ago to focus on wildlife rehabilitation, but also to provide educational programs. Her long-term goal is to develop a nature center that would offer educational summer camps for fifth- and sixth-graders and wildlife seminars for the public, including what to do when you cross paths with young animals.

Founder DeeDee Holser wanted to share her wonder and fascination of the diverse marine life found in Puget Sound. Holser started with a few touch tanks, which are shallow tanks containing marine organisms such as moon snails and nudibranchs that you can touch while learning about each species. Holser’s programs were so popular that Harbor WildWatch partnered with the City of Gig Harbor to move into the historic Skansie House where, in the first year, nearly 30,000 visitors took in more than 600 educational programs. Activities have expanded to include science workshops in the classroom, junior naturalist and citizen science-training programs, and college internships. Additionally, the organization produced Puget Sound’s Wildside, a natural history reference, and placed interpretive natural history signs in parks along Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula describing local marine life.

In a world dominated by technology, nature centers and outdoor education programs have become a lifeline to the natural world, especially for children. In 2005, a book by Richard Louv titled Last Child in the Woods, documented the gap between children and the outdoors. Louv links the knowledge of nature shortfall, what he calls nature-deficit, with childhood trends like obesity, attention disorders and depression. He recommends, for the physical and emotional health of children and adults, spending time outside on a regular basis. Since Louv’s book was published, connecting with nature has become important to many families, and schools have incorporated visits to nature centers and educational organizations into the science curriculum. Nature centers offer diverse environmental education programs, exhibits, classes and training for children, families, school groups and adults. Educational programs use creativity and imagination to create unique outdoor experiences. Since 2004, Harbor WildWatch, an exceptional marine environmental education organization in Gig Harbor, Washington, has used creativity and

I talked with Jennifer Beard, a development associate with Harbor WildWatch, about the re-opening of the Skansie Visitor Interpretive Center, which took place on March 2. “Harbor WildWatch was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, which allowed the organization to improve exhibits.” The Cheney Foundation, which is the charitable arm of the Cheney Lumber Company, focuses their giving in communities where they were historically active. After a year of planning, the new exhibits are bringing visitors to Skansie Brothers Park to experience Gig Harbor’s natural and cultural history firsthand.

A new touch tank is the cornerstone of the exhibits, giving a nod to the initial educational outreach programs that Holser put in place. “The new touch tank in the Skansie House is a larger, more permanent version of what we offer during the Summer Sounds concerts and the Waterfront Farmer’s Market,” says Lindsey Stover, executive director of Harbor WildWatch. Visitors can now get to know a variety of marine animals by touching them year round. “Adults and children love to dip a finger in to feel the sturdy exterior of a sea star, or the squishy spikes of a sea cucumber, or experience the quick reflexes of a feather duster tube worm,” says Beard.

THE CHENEY FOUNDATION, WHICH IS THE CHARITABLE ARM OF THE CHENEY LUMBER COMPANY, FOCUSES THEIR GIVING IN COMMUNITIES WHERE THEY WERE HISTORICALLY ACTIVE. In addition to the touch tank, and taking advantage of a tech-savvy public, a state-of-the-art, hands-on “sandbox” allows visitors to create their own watershed by digging rivers, lakes and bays, or piling sand into hills and mountains. Once “construction” is complete, virtual rain falls across the landscape collecting in the newly constructed topography. The sandbox provides an excellent opportunity to learn about watersheds and how what happens in the broader landscape effects Puget Sound. Another fun exhibit features live underwater video that allows visitors to see what is swimming and crawling around Gig Harbor Bay. Many other fun, educational displays and projects, some on a rotating basis, will keep children and adults busy for hours and adhere to Harbor WildWatch’s motto: Learn. Have Fun.

So, as we switch our wool hats to ball caps and head outside to enjoy springtime’s sun, warmth and longer days, remember to give wild mothers a break, and don’t kidnap their babies. Let fawns quietly wait for their mother to return, count the eggs in the nest and quickly move on so mom can get back to keeping them warm, and if you run into momma moose with her busy little calf, do an abrupt about face and head in another direction. Make it a priority to get out in the woods or take a hike to a high mountain lake and cast a line. Learn something new at one of the many wildlife refuges and educational interpretive and nature centers in your area.

Northwest Weddings By Jani Gonzalez

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Want to get married but just don't know where? Are you more of a formal or informal person? Do you prefer indoors or a more rustic approach? The following pages might be able to help you narrow it down. As you preview the photos, take note of which feeling you're drawn to more. And maybe, just maybe, you might be able to picture you and your perfect day in one of these settings.

On the

Lake

The Pacific Northwest boasts some of the most pristine lakes in the country. Take your vows and your guests on a lake cruise! There is a peacefulness that comes from taking a day cruise away from town. You and your new spouse can soak in the moment, along with the sunshine, on the deck of a lakeboat, then dive back inside for the reception and join the festivities with your guests. Cruise packages vary from two- to three-hour tours or overnight stays. Choose tours from Seattle or move inland to beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene and Lake Pend Oreille.

rustic

Ranch

Rustic weddings will always have a place in the Pacific Northwest. The area lends itself to outdoor weddings with the forests and mountain ranges as the backdrop. Having a rustic theme conjures the feeling of balance and simplicity—long, wide wooden tables, bare walls, old rusty jugs filled with fresh flowers—but let’s face it; there’s nothing simple about a wedding! Be prepared with a budget and shop your rustic venues. Celebrate the cowgirl and cowboy in you and flaunt the Western style!

elegant

Indoors

Play it safe by hosting your wedding inside that historic home or bed and breakfast with the option to go outdoors during the reception. There are many area wineries that each offer their own personal flair for you to make your own for the day. Around the Pacific Northwest, there are a number of hidden gems perfect for a wedding.

Extravagent

Outdoors

Imagine starting your life out together on top of a mountain! Say “I do” with a breathtaking view behind you! Check local parks as well to reserve space in an outdoor locale that will surely be the most talked-about and remembered moment of your day! Add lavish floral bouquets overflowing from concrete vases and an intricate trellis at the end of the aisle; scatter flowers in the spot where you will exchange your vows. Extravagance means having every moment covered. Some fairly simple structures can be fashioned to hang chandeliers, flowers and greenery. The more flowers and décor, the more extravagant the reception becomes. Whether it is a local park that you reinvent as your outdoor event masterpiece or an historic home or bed and breakfast that features gardens for entertainment, there is no shortage of outdoor venues to work with. Keep in mind the rain when planning your event, as June can be a rainy month!

Barn Style A barn wedding is a good Western venue that allows for the beauty of the outdoors, complemented by a lovely historic barn to take part of the day indoors or as a safety from the weather. The high barn ceilings decorated with strings of white light creates a mystical atmosphere. It’s all about the juxtaposition—mixing the old structure with fresh new décor—and creating a friendly, laid-back look for you and your guests.

on the

Beach

Many event centers, such as the Chapel on Echo Bay and other outdoor venues have a beautiful view of the ocean. For a true beach wedding, you only have to look up or down your backyard. Promising each other to eternity on the beach with the mountains and forests in the background is arguably the loveliest setting for a wedding. Having a nautical theme can only add to the appeal, and found items along the beach make great decorations!

Casual

getaway

Elopement is always a way to keep a wedding extremely intimate and within a manageable budget. Not everyone can afford or wants the big reception. Some bed and breakfasts may already offer packages for an elopement. Or, simply ask if a B&B is willing to accommodate. At the mention of a wedding, most owners are happy to help fulfill your wishes.

With more than 50,000 acres of world-class grapes grown in Washington and eager winemakers establishing their wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms all across the region, there are ample opportunities to sample from a myriad of labels and varietals. Specialty wine shops bring in assortments from Europe, South America and Australia, often letting you sample and taste grapes from halfway around the world. Being able to sample different varieties from different growers will help you find new wines, try a style you like, and maybe help you enjoy a blend you previously did not. Most wineries across the Northwest have a tasting room and invite guests to sample what they’ve made. There is often a small cost for the flight of wines that is refunded if you purchase a bottle from the winery. If you haven’t been before, it might sound intimidating. Do I need to dress up? What if I don’t like the wine? How do I properly taste the wine and in what order? The bottom line is most wineries are happy to just have you as a customer. While some people operate on the sommelier or connoisseur level, practicing a much-rehearsed approach to each taste and being thoughtful in what they do, the vast majority of tasters come in, sample and find the wines they enjoy. We spoke with boutique winery owner Mary Ellen Houston of Olalla Winery and Vineyards on some of the most frequently asked questions for those new to wine tasting. Q. What is the proper sequence in which to sample a wine, both red and white? A. Tastings usually start with whites and then move on to medium-bodied reds, saving the biggest reds for last. To taste, start by holding the glass by the stem and note the color and clarity of the wine. Swirl the wine (carefully, preferably on a flat surface) to allow for aeration and for the bouquet to “spring” from the glass, taking in the aroma. I like to close my eyes to really concentrate, and don’t be afraid to poke your nose into the glass. Finally, take a sip and roll it around in your mouth to make sure you are covering your entire palate, noticing the flavor and texture of the wine. Take a second sip and confirm your thoughts on the wine. Water and/or crackers can help to cleanse your palate in between tastings. Remember that wine tasting is a personal experience; what one person likes, another may not. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to personal taste in wine. Q. What should newcomers to tasting rooms know before they embark on a wine-tasting tour? A. The best advice is to have an open mind—and palate— to trying new wines. If you are more of a red wine fan, don’t be afraid to try the whites available for tasting. We’ve had several guests purchase our crisp and dry 2015 Sauvignon

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Blanc after stating they really aren’t fans of white wine. If you are brand new to wine tasting, here are some basics to follow: Avoid wearing perfume or cologne when wine tasting, as the heavy scents can ruin the experience (for everyone). Don’t be afraid to “spit” or “dump” wine—really, it’s OK. Buy wine (owners love this!), and most tasting fees are refunded with a minimum bottle purchase. And drink water to stay hydrated. Most of all, enjoy the experience and have fun! Q. Why should some wines ‘breathe’ for a few minutes while others can be consumed as soon as the bottle is opened? A. It really depends upon the type of wine. For example, if you are opening a bottle of young red wine, then you would preferably want to decant it for about 30 minutes before enjoying it. Decanting allows more surface area of the wine to come in contact with the air. This allows the wine to “breathe,” which is basically exposing the wine to oxygen. Oxygen allows the tannins and acid in the wine to mellow and soften, making the wine more enjoyable. Most white wines do not need to breathe since tannin levels are lower. (The juice doesn’t sit in the skins for as long as red wine.) Q. What types of wine are generally better being cellared? And is it worth it to wait a couple of years when purchasing these bottles? A. Wines worthy of aging tend to have higher, well-balanced tannin levels, higher acidity and lower alcohol levels, although some wines with an ABV (alcohol by volume) above 13.5 percent are still worth cellaring. Medium- to full-bodied reds like Grenache, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and just about any Bordeaux blend are best for cellaring because of the characteristics mentioned above. Of course, port and fortified wines age very well. Aging (or cellaring) wine gives the wine time for the acidity to smooth out and tannin levels to break down and soften, making the wine-tasting experience much more enjoyable. The complexities of texture, flavor and aromas of fine wine only become magnified after proper aging.

Huckleberry

Wine

Huckleberry Wine – A native fruit found in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, huckleberries provide a unique and sweet taste to your glass of wine. Pend d’Oreille Winery in Sandpoint, Idaho, takes the natural juices from the huckleberries and blends them with Riesling grapes providing a refreshing wine that has been a popular seller throughout the years. While it has not been produced over the past two vintages due to weather and low-yielding crops, representatives from Pend d’Oreille Winery said they have every intention of resuming production when the weather and crops improve. Until then, be sure to purchase it while you can! Townshend Cellar in Spokane, Washington, also offers a huckleberry brut sparkling wine for those who prefer a little bubbly. If you have not tried huckleberry wine, you will want to be sure and put it on your list.

Raspberry

Wine

Olalla Vineyard in Olalla, Washington, grows raspberries, blackberries and marionberries on their estate, allowing them the perfect opportunity to make exquisite fruit wines. They are very popular and tend to sell quickly. Currently, the 2016 raspberry wine, which is a fragrant, subtle, semi-sweet wine with a bit of tartness, is available for a cost of $25 per bottle. Try it as a dessert wine or simply a refreshing beverage on a warm day.

Are you one of those people who cannot get enough of hot and spicy foods? While some may prefer a sweet white wine to pair with their zesty foods, others are now turning to habanero wine to add even more spice to their meal. Infused with natural habanero flavors, the heat of the peppers provides the wine with an extra kick, offering an endorphin release unlike any you will get from other wines. Travel & Leisure

Traveling theWorld By Colin Anderson

Photos by Adam Schluter, Lightcast Photography TheLightcastProject.com

A 10-year “road” trip leads to Coeur d’Alene SIGNING A LEASE is a new experience for Adam Schluter. The now 30-year-old left his home in St. Louis, Missouri, more than 10 years ago in search of a new place to call home but ended up on a trip that took him around the world, across the country, and landed him in North Idaho. “I’m really close to my family, so I would go home about every four months and see them,” says Schluter. After a few-days visit, it was back on the road again and off to somewhere else he’d never been before. Schluter developed his love of travel at a young age when his parents took him from Missouri to California for the first time. “As soon as we got there I told myself I would be back again,” he recalls. Subsequent trips to different parts of the U.S., Central and South America only expanded his love for discovering new places. Everywhere he went he would snap photos of what he saw. On his 18th birthday, Schluter’s

parents gave him a more advanced point-andshoot camera, which was unknowingly the start of a career path.

Once there, he met several locals who talked him into exploring more of North Idaho, so he decided to alter his plans and stay a while.

Now, a decade after departing on this incredible journey, Schluter is staying put for the longest he’s been in one place; a whopping seven months so far in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. How he ended up settling on a small town in Northern Idaho was almost an accident. “I wanted to take the entire Pacific Coast Highway, which starts in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and ends in Alaska,” he says. “By the time I hit Seattle, I decided I didn’t want to experience winter, and I met a few people who told me I should check out Glacier National Park, so I changed directions and headed east on Interstate 90.”

“I headed north toward Ponderay and was absolutely blown away by the scenery,” recalls Schluter. One of the biggest points of emphasis on his trip was to “rough it;” passing up hotels for a tent and stay at a free campsite or in designated forest land. Utilizing the website FreeCampsites.net, Schluter was able to map out places to stay all across the country, including Bonner County, Idaho. While camped out, he met a couple from Coeur d’Alene. The three became friends, and the couple eventually invited Schluter into their home to stay with them so he could explore the outdoor places that they loved so much.

Schluter stopped in Coeur d’Alene to fill up with gas; he didn’t think much of the town, as he was right off the freeway, which is home to the national chain stores and fast-food restaurants. He then continued on to Kellogg.

In August 2016, Schluter made a decision that would halt his travel plans for a while; he signed a rental agreement and now calls Coeur d’Alene home. With no career path in

“I wanted to share my experiences and the beauty of the places I was in,” he says. “I photographed for probably five or six years on the journey before I ever thought about making it my profession.” Honing his skills on the road, Schluter met up with art galleries all across the country who displayed his prints in their gallery collections. Today, Schluter owns Lifecast Photography, giving him the opportunity to share images from his travels and North Idaho. He also books appointments for portraits, commercial and weddings, though his passion will always remain in landscape photography. “Everything just fell into place here,” Schluter says. “I love the scenery and beauty and not having to go far to find it.” While many in smaller towns across the U.S. dream of heading off to New York, Seattle, LA or San Francisco, Schluter decided to do the opposite. As Schluter says, “As I’m getting older, I’ve realized I hate big cities because I was always feeling like I was having a hard time finding genuine friends in those places. When I got to Coeur d’Alene, it was almost instant that the whole community embraced me, took me in and shared with me what they love most about the area.” Having lived a big part of his life with one foot out the door, he is now focused on building lasting relationships in his new community. “When you’re moving all of the time it can become isolating, and the lifestyle turned me into more of an introvert. Now I’m dedicated to making lasting relationships with people here, and honestly it’s a little out of my comfort zone, but I’m working on it.”

mind when he first left Missouri, Schluter discovered a new-found passion while traveling new and beautiful lands; photography.

Travel & Leisure

While road tripping across Mexico to his favorite destination, Bahia de los Angeles—an ocean community of roughly 500 you come across after traveling two hours across a desert with nothing around you—Schluter met up with a man in his 70s who had been traveling alone for more than 50 years. “He told me: ‘You’re going to see so much beauty in the world, and it’s incredible, but at the end of your life, all you will have and what you will cherish most is the people you have in your life.’ And that’s really stuck with me,” says Schluter. Considering his lack of resources and commitment to free lodging during this journey, Schluter was definitely putting his trust in the advice of strangers. He credits those early trips with his family to foreign countries to being able to trust and understand a wide variety of people. “I have a lot of trust in people when I move places. I trust people until it’s proven otherwise, which probably isn’t how most of the world does it.” Images from Schluter’s decade-long trip show scenes of splendor and contrast from all across the nation. Peaceful mountain streams, enormous peaks and glacial lakes coincide with crowded cities, desolate farmland and still forests. Photos like these can trigger a range of emotions from people, which is exactly what the photographer is hoping for. You don’t have to be a professional to capture memorable images of your favorite vacation destination, hiking trail, scenic road or city setting. Our phones are overloaded with mundane images of our kids, food, friends and of course ourselves, but how often do you stop what you’re doing in everyday life to capture a truly meaningful moment or image? These are the photos that you’ll want to share with your family and friends for years to come. Many would find it surprising that a man who has visited the majority of our country would choose to settle in a small lakeside community in North Idaho. While everyone’s idea of paradise differs, Schluter truly believes he’s found his. “Everyone has a different story here. I want to live here. I want to keep making friends here, and it’s awesome that I can take so many short trips to such beautiful places.”

“He told me: ‘You’re going to see so much beauty in the world, and it’s incredible, but at the end of your life, all you will have and what you will cherish most is the people you have in your life.’ And that’s really stuck with me,” says Schluter.

Parmigiano-Reggiano—or Parmesan cheese as it is most commonly referred to in English—as we know it today, has been traced back to the 13th and 14th centuries, with the process still much the same hundreds of years later! True Parmigiano-Reggiano is slightly gritty in texture, with a savory flavor encompassing a sharp and complex fruity/nutty taste. It is most commonly grated and served over a variety of pasta dishes, grated or shaved over salads, and stirred into soups and risottos. And don’t let the savory rind go to waste; it can be used to enhance the flavors of soups and sauces.

A SHOW OF APPRECIATION

Volunteer to help get our parks ready for the season! By Patty Hutchens Courtesy photos SPRING IS HERE, AND SOON our city parks will be full of children playing, families enjoying a stroll and the all-around feeling of joy that a warm day can bring. Our community is blessed to have so many wonderful places to enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. This year’s Parks Appreciation Day will take place on Saturday, April 22, 9am to noon. There are many venues that need a little care after the long winter, so families and individuals are encouraged to volunteer a few hours to help get our parks ready for all to enjoy. It is not necessary to pre-register; simply show up at one of the several sites including Crescent Creek Park and Sand Volleyball Courts, Kenneth Leo Marvin Veterans Memorial Park, Wilkinson Farm Park, Donkey Creek Park, Austin Estuary Park, McCormick Forest Park, Harbor Family Park, Sehmel Homestead Park, Narrows Park, Rotary Bark Park, Volunteer Park, Rocky Conservative Area, KP Civic Center, Home Park and Kopachuck State Park. The City of Gig Harbor asks that volunteers come dressed appropriately for the season and for the work involved. Suggested items to bring include gloves, shears, loppers, pruners, rakes and shovels. Be sure to label everything you bring so it is not misplaced. This is also an opportunity for groups and organizations to get involved.
