PUBLISHER’S

Note

SPRING + EASTER = HOPE IT HAS BEEN A LONG WINTER, and the warmth of spring is a welcomed relief from the dark, cold days of the past several months. Sure, the snow is fun for a while, and Christmas is never the same unless it’s a white Christmas, but after time we yearn for the warmth of the sun as nature blooms around us. This month we will also celebrate Easter, a season of hope, renewal and the promise of eternal life. While we have our secular symbols of Easter such as coloring Easter eggs, the Easter bunny and more, the true meaning of Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, giving the promise of eternal life—the symbol of ultimate hope in the Christian world. Sadly, there are many in this world who struggle each day with little hope in their lives. Whether it is living in poverty, broken relationships or struggling with abuse, mental health issues or addiction, it is easy to lose hope when you don’t feel the love of others. One of the best ways we can show the love of God to others is through our actions.

For those of us who are blessed with an enriched life surrounded by people who love us, one of the greatest gifts we can give to others is the gift of hope. I encourage you to connect with others who may feel as though there is no more hope in their lives. While coloring Easter eggs and other seemingly secular traditions are fun, add a new tradition this year and do what you can to give others a spark of hope in their lives. Know that you are helping spread the Good News of the Easter season, and you, too, will feel a renewed sense of hope! Happy Easter from all of us at Living Local!

hat does “being green” really mean these days?

Our modern world is loaded with urban words and catchphrases. According to urban dictionary, we must know certain words to even understand the internet, from awesome sauce and beer me to bromance and crunk. (By the way, crunk has multiple meanings: Conan O’Brien’s replacement for curse words, a rap style, crazy/drunk, and something awesome; thought we covered that with awesome sauce.)

materials, indoor air quality (IAQ), accessibility, accessory dwelling units (ADUs and DADUs), urban farming, embodied carbon footprints, living buildings, human-powered living, multimodal transportation and more. If some of these words spark your interest, the easiest way to interpret this jargon will be to go visit green projects.

Some of the worst culprits of modern-day jargon are: engineers, architects, designer and builders, even more so in the world of green buildings and homes.

Lucky for us, the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild puts on a tour of green sites every year. The Northwest Green Home Tour provides opportunities for community members to learn about sustainable building techniques and practices from the people walking the modern day talk; site hosts range from the builders, to suppliers, to homeowners living it every day.

You may have heard some of the following catchphrases for energy, water, waste, nature-inspired design and small design: water conservation, energy efficiency, energy retrofits, alternative energy, storm-water infiltration, net positive waste, alternative foundations, advanced building envelopes, regenerative design, Biomimicry, the red list, material transparency, regional healthy

The tour takes place over the weekend of May 4 and 5, 11am to 5pm both days in the South Sound, starting on Saturday in Olympia and taking place the following day in Tacoma. All sites have at least one host, if not more. It’s your chance to go pick some green builder brains. Even better, here’s your opportunity to hear from those living in those healthy spaces and their journey of pre-

It’s free and self-guided and includes healthy homes remodeled or newly constructed in your neck of the woods; from single-family homes with small to big remodels, new builds of backyard cottages, tiny home communities to new condominiums and multi-family projects, each project features sustainable ways to live in the Pacific Northwest. Last year’s Olympia sites included: the Swantown Inn, West Central Park Neighborhood Center and West Central Park Project, Calliope Ecological Farmhouse, Marie Bed and Breakfast, and homes such as the South Bay house. This year in Olympia, check out Annie’s Flats, a multiuse building containing 33 one-bedroom apartments and 15 studios, a gallery and commercial space. Other sites include solar installations by South Sound Solar, Percival Street House, just to name a few. Last year’s Tacoma sites included: The Environmental Learning Center in Point Defiance Park, LeMay Car Museum, Feast Arts Center, Alma Mater Arts and Community Space, Second Use Building Materials,

This year, the Bowman family opens their home again to showcase energy efficiency through its use of a roof-mounted solar array that integrates with a ductless heat system. This Tacoma family looks forward to sharing their story and lessons learned. Point Ruston, a waterfront resort-inspired village, is opening its doors as well to show you green condominiums in a mixed-use community. And check out one of the three approved detached accessory dwelling units from the City of Tacoma’s Urban Infill Pilot Program that is going for a BuiltGreen certification. It's About the Children HOW DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE YOUR DIVORCE? By Felicia Soleil, JD

I

often begin a consultation with new clients by asking, “If your divorce is done well, how do you want to feel about it at the end?” Most clients initially respond by admitting they haven’t thought much beyond the “here and now,” with one exception. Parties who experienced their own parents’ divorce frequently say, “I know what I don’t want, and that is for our children to go through what I went through when my own parents got divorced.” I hear frequent complaints from these adults about torn loyalties, jostling between two homes, having to be too many places on a holiday, and being embarrassed about how their parents treated each other in public when attending school and sporting events and large family gatherings. Some clients say they have postponed their own divorce because they were afraid of putting their children through that kind of turmoil. Of course, living in the same household with two parents in continual conflict is just exchanging one kind of childhood turmoil for another. It’s not just clients who experience this. Recently, at a neighborhood get-together, my friends’ 8-year-old daughter excitedly announced that “Some mommies and daddies don’t live together anymore because those mommies and daddies don’t love each other. The kids have to go all over to different houses and can’t spend Christmas together and can’t be families anymore!” Her parents are together, so I asked her how she knew this. She said, “A lot of kids in my class don’t have mommies and daddies who live in the same house. We talk about it all the time!” I don’t recall what prompted this excited explanation from her, but it reminded me of how important it is to consider what you are teaching your children about the meaning of family, handling conflict, handling changing relationships and simply explaining why one home is now becoming two. Your actions and explanations may reach far beyond your own children. You are setting an

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

example for others. What do you want that to look like? My best advice is this: Don’t go it alone. Seek professional guidance. Whether it be through family counseling, your church resources or an experienced family law mediator or attorney, you and your co-parent will be able to learn helpful tips and techniques for handling the most sensitive questions, such as: What do we tell the children? Can we create a joint narrative instead of individual stories? When do we tell the children? Can we tell them at a time that is least disruptive to their schedules so they know they can still depend on us for stability while they process what is happening? How do we tell the children? Are we supposed to tell them together, or one-on-one? How do we act after we’ve told them? Can we still live in the same house for a while? Can we still be friendly toward one another? What if that is too hard? What do we not tell the children? How much information is too much information? How do we determine what is age-appropriate for each of our children? Prior to figuring out the residential schedule and all the logistics that go with it, ask yourself, “How do I want our children to experience our divorce?” Chances are they may face their own divorce one day. What do you want them to remember? If you’ve reached a decision about separation or divorce, Felicia Soleil will help you achieve a resolution that fosters both a compassionate ending to your union and a healthy new beginning for you and your family so you can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential.

MAXIMIZE YOUR Top 2019 outdoor OUTDOOR LIVING living trends

(BPT) - WITH BUSY SCHEDULES AND ON-THE-GO LIFESTYLES, OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES OFFER A CHANCE TO DECOMPRESS, enjoy nature and connect with friends and family. Thanks to the impressive design and quality of today’s outdoor products, these spaces often rival the convenience, comfort and design of the indoors.

Cozy and clean

As the heart of the home shifts outdoors, following are some of the top trends that will dominate the outdoor living landscape.

However, trend experts are quick to point out that “cozy” doesn’t equal “clutter.” Clean, minimalist looks are growing in popularity, as homeowners emphasize quality over quantity. In outdoor spaces, this trend is manifesting in sleek lines, simple styles and a preference for long-lasting products.

Sustainable solutions There is a growing interest in sustainable alternatives to wood products, which contribute to deforestation and can leave a heavy carbon footprint. Composite decking offers an appealing option that outperforms wood, with greater durability, less ongoing maintenance and fewer harmful environmental impacts. Trex decking, for example, is made from 95 percent recycled and reclaimed materials, diverting more than 250 million pounds of plastic film and bags from landfills each year. Beyond decking, composite materials also can be found in today’s hottest outdoor furnishings. Manufactured from recycled milk jugs and other polyethylene plastics, these high-performance on-trend designs offer environmentally responsible options for comfortable, stylish outdoor living.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

As homeowners spend more time enjoying their outdoor living spaces, comfort is key. From plush cushions and throws to cozy pergolas, today’s outdoor spaces are designed to evoke serenity and peace.

On decks, this minimalist trend can be seen in the popularity of streamlined aluminum railings. Another must-have is outdoor cabinetry such as built-in trash bins and ice chests that can be color coordinated to integrate seamlessly into a deck design. Illuminated spaces From candles and tiki torches to fireplaces and integrated fixtures, outdoor lighting is another “bright” idea that is in high demand. The right lighting can take any outdoor space from invisible to inviting—especially when it’s integrated in innovative ways to accentuate key features. Spotlights highlighting an accent wall or tread lights

incorporated into a bar top are both popular options. Adding dimmable LED lighting to the railing and stairs not only adds ambiance but also enhances safety. By choosing which outdoor elements to highlight, it’s easy to change the look of an outdoor living space without moving any furniture. Decidedly DIY More homeowners than ever are feeling confident about building their own outdoor living spaces. Lighter weight deck boards such as Trex Enhance, as well as innovative, easyto-install railing panels, have made creating a dream deck on your own easier than ever.

elebrate spring with PenMet Parks as they once again host their Spring Egg Hunt Saturday, April 20, noon to 2pm at Sehmel Homestead Park. The event, held the Saturday before Easter each year, has become a family tradition for many in Gig Harbor. And this year’s event is sure to delight all in attendance as it has year after year.

Cuzzetto, they will be offering a different layout of the event with a few different options for participation in their summer camp preview. “With all the magic that spring has to offer, the true magic is in the smile that is brought to the kids’ faces as they are next in line to meet the Easter Bunny,” says Cuzzetto. “You can honestly feel the excitement and joy that is running through them.”

“This event is close to my heart in so many ways. I remember attending over 10 years ago as a visitor and just knew this was the place to be,” says Chuck Cuzzetto, marketing specialist for Peninsula Metropolitan Park District. “What makes our Spring Egg Hunt so special is the support from all of our visitors enjoying time with loved ones in a place that PenMet Parks can provide year after year.”

The egg hunt is designed for children from pre-K to 12 years old. There will be roped off areas according to age, though they welcome any and all siblings to join one another however they see fit. “We love seeing all of our community members visiting our parks, events and participating in programs,” says Cuzzetto. “Be sure to pick up a copy of our Spring Parks and Recreation Guide at the Spring Egg Hunt, also available at local businesses! In the meantime, see you at the park!”

This event is sure to please the entire family, with free photos with the Easter Bunny, prizes for every child, summer camp previews and ample space to run around or just take in the fresh air. This year, according to

Night to Shine

HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS BRING SPECIAL EVENT TO LIFE

By Anneli Fogt Photos By Blue Tie Photography

ic Hansen could have never predicted the impact a Google search would have.

It was November 2018, and the Gig Harbor-based radio industry veteran was browsing the Internet when something caught his eye. It was about the keto diet—a low-carb, high-fat diet that has recently gained a great deal of attention and a sizeable celebrity following. Included in that following, former NFL quarterback and current Mets outfielder Tim Tebow. He clicked. From Tebow’s diet, Ric found the Christian athlete’s book, “Shaken.” He bought it. Then, he found Night to Shine—a program created by the Tim Tebow Foundation to celebrate people with special needs. First held five years ago, Night to Shine is an annual volunteer-run, church-hosted prom night experience centered on God’s love that aims to provide a fun, welcoming environment for those with special needs. This year, more than 650 churches worldwide hosted the events for nearly 100,000 guests. Nearly 200 attended the first-ever event in Gig Harbor. It was right up Ric’s alley. After leaving the radio

industry, he started a mobile deejay company and would regularly provide music and entertainment for special events similar to Night to Shine. “I thought, ‘This is a no-brainer. This is pretty easy to do,’” he recalls. This year, Night to Shine experiences were slated to be held on February 8. Locally, churches in Kitsap County, Renton and Olympia were hosting events, but none were scheduled in the Gig Harbor area. So, in December, Ric approached the leadership of his church, Harbor Christian Center, about hosting a Night to Shine for local guests. The church fully embraced the idea, and Ric applied to the foundation to hold the event on the February date—two months away. It was then that the reality of the event’s timeline and scale set in. “Most people start planning in May for the following year,” he says. “We were on a crash course. It was a whole lot more than any of us thought it was going to be.” More than a dance, Night to Shine exists to provide an all-encompassing night of entertainment— including karaoke, limousine rides, shoe shines and

hairdressers—to a vulnerable population that requires extra attention, accommodation and precautions. Because of this, a 92-page foundation manual, which Ric called “overwhelming at first,” outlines the necessary precautions and need for volunteers—hundreds of them. “It takes a lot. Every guest has a buddy for the night, so for every guest we had to have a volunteer to walk them through everything for the whole night,” he said. That doesn’t include other volunteers to provide the experiences, help with venue setup and cleanup, and the countless other logistical challenges that went into planning an event of this size. But if there’s one thing Ric knew, it was that his community would answer the call. After a massive volunteer recruitment process and hundreds of background checks, 325 volunteers were confirmed for the February 8 event. Then the weather rolled in. A record-breaking snowstorm dumped more than 9 inches of snow in early February. The event was postponed for two weeks and nearly half of the volunteers were unable to accommodate the new February 22 date. More outreach and more background checks, and the volunteer force was restored. On the night of the event, the team of nearly 300 strong was nervous, but excited. They had built an event, the first of its kind in the area, and now nearly 200 guests with special needs from ages 14 to 70 were expected to attend. Limousines were ready to give them the cruise of a lifetime, shoeshines and hairdressers stood by for pre-event primping, superheroes were in attendance, and the karaoke stage was set. As guests arrived, dressed to the nines with their dates, they were paired with a volunteer buddy and guided around the event offerings. Karaoke was a hit and had a line all night, paparazzi snapped pictures, and the

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

dance floor was full. It went off without a hitch. But the highlight of the evening for both the guests and volunteers was the crowning ceremony where each guest was crowned either King or Queen of the Prom. Preceded by a video presentation from Tim Tebow himself explaining that, in God’s eyes, everyone is a king or queen, each guest was called to the stage to receive a crown. For volunteer Nora Maharry, who also attends Harbor Christian Center, the ceremony was the “most magical part of the night.” “They’re so appreciative,” she said, recalling the reaction of a guest who saw himself on the big screen and threw his arms in the air with a yell. “He was so happy.” Two weeks later, Nora received an unexpected visit at work. It was a special guest who had attended the Night to Shine. “I walked up to him and he said, “Hey, I just want to tell you that my date and I came and we had the best night ever,’” Nora said. “And he also said, ‘I know that people don’t always get compliments, and my mom told me I had to come down here and tell you.’ He has the date memorized for next year.” He’ll be returning. As will nearly all of the volunteers. Ric said that, when surveyed after Night to Shine, 90 percent said they would volunteer again. “From day one, the goal was to make this an absolute awesome night for the guests but equally awesome for the volunteers. It’s the most challenging and the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.” Planning for next year’s event—which will be held on February 7—will begin soon. A Holistic Approach to Improved Health YOUR HEALING JOURNEY BEGINS HERE BY JILLIAN CHANDLER | PHOTOS BY SAM TILLMAN

"Seeing the positive results each of my clients experience, and being able to share a holistic approach to their own healing," is what she finds most rewarding. "Educating my clients about taking care of themselves is the best gift they could ever give themselves."

“FROM THE TIME I WAS A CHILD, I HAVE BEEN INTERESTED IN THE HEALING POWER OF TOUCH,” says Darcie Miller, Washington State and Nationally Board Certified (ARCB) Reflexologist Reiki Master/teacher and owner of Light in Balance, located in Gig Harbor. It was nearly a decade ago that Darcie experienced her first Reiki session while on a retreat. Shortly after returning from that retreat she says, “There came a point in my life where I felt unsettled and out of balance, and I sought out a local Reiki practitioner for a session. I again felt wonderful after receiving Reiki and was offered an opportunity to study and learn Reiki.” She enrolled in Reiki training and became a Master Reiki practitioner/teacher. During this time, she was introduced to the healing sounds of Tibetan bowls and took classes to learn how to play them for herself and others. Darcie incorporates sound healing with Tibetan bowls into each Reiki session. She recently attended a Crystal Bowl Mastery class in Sedona, Arizona, and has added crystal bowls to all of her sound sessions. Tibetan bowls have been used for thousands of years as a method of healing for both physical and mental illness. “Our bodies are vibrational by nature, and when we are at dis-ease or out of balance, disease can set in. Vibrations from Tibetan and/or crystal bowls can help bring your body back into a state of balance on a cellular level,” says Darcie. Sound healing can help with

anxiety, tension, stress, side effects from chemotherapy, diabetes, ADHD, insomnia and depression, to name a few. As a result of her lifelong interest in the healing power of touch, Darcie studied reflexology at the Seattle Reflexology and Massage School, where she completed her training in reflexology and became both Washington State and Nationally Board Certified. At Life in Balance, Darcie offers her clients multiple holistic modalities using Reiki, reflexology, cranial/sacral reflexology, sound healing with Tibetan and crystal bowls and guided meditations. She provides private and group sound healing sessions, and also offers corporate events for relaxation in the workplace. In addition, Darcie holds monthly Tibetan and crystal bowl concerts. These concerts offer a nurturing space where you can relax, unwind and quiet your mind. Experiencing these extraordinary sounds can be beneficial for reducing chronic pain, stress and many other health challenges. “My studio reflects my personality,” she says. “I offer a serene and welcoming sanctuary where clients feel emotionally safe; you can expect to experience an unhurried session.

"Seeing the positive results each of my clients experience, and being able to share a holistic approach to their own healing," is what she finds most rewarding. "Educating my clients about taking care of themselves is the best gift they could ever give themselves." Darcie has called Gig Harbor home for nearly 15 years. Not only does she give back to the community through her work at Light in Balance, she is also actively involved with Altrusa of Gig Harbor. In 2009 she also chartered a support group for parents who have children born with congenital heart defects. “My own personal journey of growth and healing, along with the passion I have for sharing it with others, is a huge part of my success,” says Darcie. “My teachers, mentors and clients have played almost as large a role. I am so very grateful for their teachings, support, encouragement and recommendations.” Darcie welcomes the opportunity to help you begin your healing journey to a new you, or reawaken a part of you that may have been put on hold for a while.

GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS MARINA HAS BEEN AT THE EGGS-ACT CENTER OF LOCAL ECONOMY 1880 MOSQUITO FLEET TRANSPORTED GOODS, RETURNED WITH SUPPLIES FOR ISOLATED FARMERS IN THE SOUTH SOUND BY DAN AZNOFF | PHOTOS COURTESY OF LAURA HEATHER

I

f Mark Scott had become an inventor, he probably would have created a time machine that could take people back to a more colorful era when business deals were completed with a handshake and complex transactions were negotiated at the bar of the local saloon. Instead, Scott is an entrepreneur who has brought his vision of the Olympic Peninsula during another era to life with the renovation of the historic 1880 Mosquito Fleet dock at the Lakebay Marina. The marina is located on Mayo Cove in the southern reaches of the Puget Sound across a narrow waterway from Penrose Point State Park.

From an economic standpoint, the Lakebay Marina is the only gas dock for dozens of nautical miles in each direction. It is a great place to pick up burgers for lunch, some fish and chips, or just to share stories with some of the locals. “As a person who loves the water, the drive out to Lakebay is breathtaking and the long walk on the pier is a walk back into history,” said Laura Heather, Scott’s sister and the winter caretaker at the marina. Parents, she said, enjoy the dining options at the restaurant while the kids will undoubtedly want to run off to look at the starfish through

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

the glass windows and to watch the otter play within a few yards of where they sit down together for a family meal. Heather was quick to add that the marina has paddle boats and kayaks available to rent so families can explore the spit. “And we have the best ice cream ever made the old-fashion way with a hand crank.” From a historical viewpoint, the renovated dock and warehouse at the end of the pier stand as a tribute to the poultry farmers who provided eggs and chicken to soldiers in Europe in World War II and to an industry that kept families together during the darkest days of The

Great Depression. It was also home to the last Mosquito Fleet on the Puget Sound. The term Mosquito Fleet was used to describe boats on the Puget Sound that ferried people on and off the Key Peninsula. The small boats were often the only way for people living on the Key Peninsula to send and receive mail or travel to other parts of the Puget Sound. The Lakebay Marina was nominated as a historical site shortly after Scott bought the local landmark seven years ago. “Life is about history. The two came together once we were nominated as a historic sight,” Scott explained. “That being said, maybe the

efforts of a few dedicated individuals will help bring back this historic mosquito dock landing, the old Cooper Hotel and the building that housed the old store on the pier where Dr. Penrose used to row his skiff to supply the workers at the old sawmill brick company.” According to Scott, the sawmill brick was a navigation business founded by Carl Lorenz that built many of the boats that traversed the Puget Sound before the start of the 20th century. The owner of the historic marina also hopes to restore the old farmers’ co-op to the condition it was in during the peak of the egg and

poultry industry in 1928, when a vintage green Hamilton Beach shake machine was used to sort and clean eggs from farms across Western Washington. “My vision is to see the Cooper Hotel and old store as a complete sightseeing destination that will take people back to what life was really like 100 years ago,” said Scott. The dock and Mosquito fleet exhibit is scheduled to reopen for the season in May. Scott’s vision of the historic dock dates back to the 1930s and ‘40s when the warehouse stood as a co-op where farmers and fishermen purchased and often bartered for machine parts

and the fuel they used to scrap out a meager living during the harsh reality of the times. The system apparently worked so well that cold storage facilities were installed on the dock that could keep eggs, milk and fryers fresh until boats from the Mosquito Fleet transported them to market in Tacoma. The warehouse was utilized as a trading post where farmers could pick up feed for their animals, parts for their tractor, wire fencing, tires, batteries, fuel and other essentials to keep their farms clucking.

Children would gather at the warehouse after school to pack the eggs into wooden crates with cardboard separators with indented cups for individual eggs. A piece of cardboard was placed over each layer until the eggs were stacked six layers high. Each crate held 18 dozen eggs. The eggs were shipped from Lakebay to Tacoma. Some were taken from there by train to the East Coast in refrigerated rail cars, some ended up in South America and many went to Europe as an inexpensive source of protein for soldiers during World War II.

The co-op was a reflection of the community, with shares owned by the people who operated the egg collection process. According to local historian Cathy Williams, 375 families were part of the collective in 1930 out of a population of just 1,254. The warehouse was used for everything from dances and weddings to ice cream socials.

Eggs from Leghorn chickens were sold at a premium, she said, because of their nutritional value and for the pure white color of their shells.

“The co-op was Grand Central for the community,” said Williams. “It was a means for people to survive.”

The short journey to Tacoma was initially done by dozens of vessels from the Mosquito Fleet but eventually accomplished exclusively by one boat— The Burro.

Joyce Olson Niemann can still remember driving to the Lakebay co-op store in her father’s truck at the age of 14 to drop off cases of eggs. She would drive the old truck onto the pier, where men would help her unload crates of eggs, then turn around so two tons of hay could be loaded in the back of truck to take back to the family farm. The eggs, she said, were gathered daily from the nests and then carefully wiped to remove any dirt or feathers before they were gently packed in crates for the ride to the co-op. She recalled the small pulley system in the hen house with a sanding belt that was drawn around a system of wooden spindles.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Niemann’s father, Elmer Olson, was a major shareholder of the co-op and was instrumental in bringing the co-op to Lakebay.

For parts of the year, the Mosquito Fleet was the only means of transportation for residents of the Key Peninsula because heavy rain would make the dirt roads impassable. The rag tag armada of small ships helped turn the agricultural community into a thriving industry that fed a hungry nation at a time when help was needed the most. Operators of the Mosquito Fleet established the state of Washington as a reliable resource of nutriment during a time when food was sometimes a rare commodity.

ifteen-year-old sophomore Audrey Krishnadasan thoroughly enjoys the game of softball. She was the starting shortstop on varsity last year, and this year she is also trying her hand at pitching. “I love softball for many reasons—the camaraderie, the competition and the pure joy of making a diving play or hitting the game-winning RBI,” said Audrey. “But the thing that I love about softball the most is the fact that it is so fast paced.” Last year, PHS was one game away from state, and Audrey said she is excited to see where the team can go this year. In addition to playing for Peninsula, Audrey plays club softball for the Seattle Sundodgers, traveling to several out-of-state recruiting tournaments throughout the year. Although she still has time to decide on her college plans, Audrey says that from the moment she was introduced to college softball, she knew that is what she wanted to do.

IN HER WORDS...

“I have dreamed of the commitment and intensity of playing at the collegiate level. I plan to attend a small liberal arts college following high school,” she said. Audrey shares that she has learned a lot from her coaches, but one in particular, Kaija Gibson, who plays softball for University of Washington and who has helped coach Audrey’s club team, said something that has made an impact on Audrey. “Her main message was this: Even if you are not playing on the field, what can you be doing in the dugout to help your team win?” said Audrey. “I started to understand that I could use my voice to be a leader in the dugout. I could find the pattern of the opposing pitcher and inform my teammates. I could make sure everyone in the field knew that the runner at one was going to two. While making physical plays is important, games are not won solely by the nine on the field; every single person in the dugout can and will have a direct effect on the outcome of the game. Knowing my role is probably the biggest factor into what inspires me to be a leader on and off the field.”

Jennifer Chushcoff has been creating art and writing articles, poetry and children’s books—with a focus on nature—for more than 20 years.

“I’ve lived here for about 20 years. There have been many changes, but what remains the same are wonderful opportunities for exploring and hiking,” says Jennifer. “The Northwest is a gem. The environment recharges my batteries and brings me to life!”

Growing up in Southern California, she attended UC Berkeley, where she received her B.A. in art history. After her mother, grandmother and younger siblings moved to Gig Harbor 22 years ago, Jennifer would spend her holidays and vacations here, and after graduation, she decided to follow her family’s path and head north, relocating from the Bay Area to Washington.

The author of “WA is Water: An Intimate Portrait,” published in 2016, Jennifer spent two years researching and traveling the state, logging more than 3,700 miles in her car and an unknown number of miles hiking wooded paths and dusty fields. “Given the geological and climactic diversity of Washington, I saw as much as I could whilst visiting all four corners,” she says. “Though I could spend my entire life writing up these discoveries, there was a deadline, which was a very good thing!”

After arriving in Washington, Jennifer trained as a master gardener through Washington State University’s Master Gardener program. It was

“My goal is to share this fascinating corner of the world."

THE BOOK WAS A WAY FOR HER TO CELEBRATE WATER’S PRESENCE AND IMPACT. “WHEN I THINK OF WATER, I THINK OF WASHINGTON."

The inspiration behind the book was Jennifer’s fascination of the unique climate and geography of Washington state. The book was a way for her to celebrate water’s presence and impact. “When I think of water, I think of Washington,” she says. Backing for her to dedicate her time to bring the book to fruition came from a grant she received through the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program. “The Puget Sound, also known as the Salish Sea, is a phenomenal landform filled with a stunning array of life. No other state is nearly cut in two by water. Yet, just over the Cascades, on the eastern portion, there is a magnificent, rich desert that requires the life-giving waters of rivers and underwater reservoirs. This irrigation helps supply the world with phenomenal wines, produce and grains,” she states. Jennifer adds that the book is not a guidebook to the state but rather about celebrating and sharing the beautiful state of Washington through

her lens. “My goal is to share this fascinating corner of the world. I use a multidisciplinary approach with most of my projects and thrive on drawing visual and literary art together. I’m always seeking out ways to connect the two. With this book, I combine poetry, photography and facts about the state based on the theme of water,” she says. “It is my deepest wish to share discoveries and create a connection with others.” It is important to Jennifer to offer her time and experience to local organizations that emphasize conservation. She has served on boards and committees for both Gig Harbor and Tacoma literary arts organizations and is currently providing graphic design work for Creative Colloquy, a nonprofit that is based in Tacoma. “We have monthly gatherings with featured readers and host open mics, a yearly lit-crawl and publish South Sound writers, both online and in an annual print collection, she says.”

A Taste of Central Texas in Gig Harbor YOU WON’T FIND BARBECUE LIKE THIS ANYWHERE ELSE BY JILLIAN CHANDLER PHOTOS COURTESY OF BBQ2U AND BY SAM TILLMAN

BBQ2U 4814 Point Fosdick Drive NW Gig Harbor, Washington 98335 253.313.5656 TexasBBQ2U.com

When it comes to what Gary finds most rewarding about the work he does, he says it’s the happiness that barbecue brings to people and giving them a taste of home. “I have had people come in here and literally break down. Many of these folks have lived in the south, gotten used to the food and really miss it badly. I feel so humbled." “BARBECUE FOUND ME,” SAYS GARY PARKER, THE PROUD OWNER OF BBQ2U, LOCATED RIGHT HERE IN GIG HARBOR. Growing up, the native Texan—Central Texas to be exact—was surrounded by the aromas and flavors of authentic smoked barbecue. Gary recalls making fires with his dad and cooking at a young age. Texan barbecue was a staple in his life and continues to be today. Gary, along with his family, made the move to Gig Harbor 22 years ago for his corporate career. One day, while smoking ribs on his back deck, he recalls his neighbor yelling at him: “Why is your deck on fire?” Long story short, Gary invited his neighbor over to try them. Soon after, he was hiring Gary to cater his son’s graduation party. Over time, while still working his day job, Gary began picking up more catering jobs and in 2016 was working toward his retirement. His “little” side business of catering barbecues for people was more popular than ever. “It shows that the people here in the Northwest really appreciate great barbecue,” Gary says. Two years later, he would open the doors to his first restaurant— BBQ2U. “After 30 years in the corporate world, opening my first restaurant was probably the toughest thing I’ve experienced in my life,” he says. “I was scared

to death because I didn’t know anything about running a restaurant, but I was missing that world (of barbecue) that I had been in for so long. We opened this restaurant to have fun and to bring a little taste of Central Texas to the Pacific Northwest.” Gary celebrated the restaurant’s first anniversary on March 2 of this year and is grateful for the support and success he has seen since day one. “It has been awesome, and we’re growing like crazy,” he says. “Being a new restaurant with a non-experienced restaurant owner, we’ve done really well and the restaurant is going strong.” At BBQ2U, they smoke seven different meats in-house (brisket, beef rib, pulled pork, St. Louis spare ribs, chicken, smoked turkey breast and sausage) each day and sell it by the pound. Whether you choose to dine in our take out, you’re sure to experience the best Texas barbecue outside of Texas. “There’s grilling, and then there’s barbecue,” says Gary. “At BBQ2U, we cook authentic Central Texas-style barbecue only using wood-fired pits and following the methods that have yielded great barbecue for over 100 years. It creates a flavor profile you won’t find anywhere else.” Gary takes pride in honoring the traditions of barbecue, even importing

all his wood from Texas and using pits that are designed in Texas and shipped to Gig Harbor. When it comes to what Gary finds most rewarding about the work he does, he says it’s the happiness that barbecue brings to people and giving them a taste of home. “I have had people come in here and literally break down,” says Gary. “Many of these folks have lived in the south, gotten used to the food and really miss it badly. I feel so humbled. Those things are truly memorable.” Currently, BBQ2U provides catering both on- and off-site. They can host 50 to 60 patrons at the restaurant and can cater for up to 300 people for events off-site including corporate events, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, family reunions and any special occasion. When it comes to what the future holds for BBQ2U, Gary sees the restaurant growing twice the size and is looking at multiple levels of expansion. If you are looking for a taste of Texas here in Gig Harbor, BBQ2U is ready to serve you the best in traditional, flavorful, unmatched barbecue. Open seven days a week, Gary invites you to dine with them 11am to 8pm.

STRESSED OUT AND ANXIOUS? Explore nature’s remedy—Adaptogens By Elli Enneking and Jarett Jackson MOST AMERICANS ARE WELL-INFORMED ABOUT THE RISE OF CHRONIC STRESS. Year after year, news stories and articles blast television screens and hand-held devices about this widespread public health crisis. Stress and anxiety are both normal human responses but, over a period of time, can lead to a variety of consequences. Concerns of money, relationships, political divisions and career all have an impact on our stress levels, which in turn, if stress becomes chronic, will most certainly have a direct impact on our health.

This interruption puts you at high risk of a variety of health problems including depression, anxiety, obesity, weight gain, insomnia, lack of focus, memory impairment and adrenal fatigue. We are living the majority of our waking hours in the fight-or-flight response, and this is knocking our bodies out of balance.

In a recent survey, the American Psychological Association reported that most Americans are suffering from moderate to high stress, with 44 percent reporting that their stress levels have increased over the past five years.

So what is the solution for those of us who are moderate to high risk for chronic stress? Adaptogens, nature’s ideal wellness supplement that works with your body naturally to combat stress. Adaptogens are a variety of plants that when taken help one cope with the physical or emotional stress that arises from poor diet, challenging schedules and the demands of everyday life.

Reports such as these suggest that many of us are experiencing chronic stress. Long-term exposure to chronic stress—and the ensuing activation of the stress hormone cortisol—can interrupt all of your body’s regulatory systems.

Adaptogens are naturally occurring super herbs that are just becoming popularized in the West, though these substances have been used over the course of several millennia, especially in Ayurveda (a mind-body health

system originated in India) and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Both Eastern and Western medicine support the claims that adaptogens may reduce stress, support hormone balance and support energy balance. Adaptogens are naturally occurring non-toxic substances that ‘adapt’ their powerful healing properties to what your body specifically needs. There is a strict set of guidelines in order to qualify a plant as an adaptogen. They must meet the following criteria: • Adaptogens must be safe with no negative side effects. • Adaptogens must stimulate the body’s own self-regulation process and enhance the body’s nonspecific resistance (ability to cope with external and internal stress). • Adaptogens must have a balancing, normalizing effect on body functions. • Adaptogens must be non-toxic and non-habit forming. Top Adaptogens for Stress 1. Ashwagandha: If you’re partially plugged into the world of health and wellness, you have likely heard of this powerful adaptogen. Ashwagandha, or Indian ginseng, is perfect for those of us who are worn down by stress. There has been a significant amount of research done on this marvelous adaptogen that supports ashwagandha’s time-tested reputation for being a great remedy for stress. 2. Maca: A South American root generally known for its hormone-balancing benefits, maca’s adaptogenic qualities also support

the adrenal function by helping your body normalize its cortisol levels, reduce exhaustion from stress, and protect against other negative stress effects. Further adding to its stress-busting powers, maca intake has been linked to the reversal of ulcers, enhanced anti-stress response, and support of weak and tired adrenal glands. 3. Reishi: Regarded as the No. 1 superior tonic herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, reishi mushroom is the most extensively studied herb in the world and has been in use throughout Asia for a broad range of health and longevity benefits for thousands of years. Introductory research indicates that reishi mushroom may reduce anxiety and depression. It is also known to enhance the overall sense of well-being in people suffering from medical conditions. 4. Rhodiola: An herb, also referred to as golden root, rhodiola has been used in Scandinavian and Arctic regions for centuries as a traditional medicine to improve cognitive function and to promote energy and vitality. Rhodiola, an amazing antioxidant, is considered one of the most reliable natural herbal supplements for depression. It reduces heart rate and decreases blood pressure, and it is being used to for people who are suffering from stress and anxiety. 5. Chaga: Considered one of nature’s most powerful stress relievers, Chaga offers a solid variety of health perks and is safe for use over an extended period of time. Consuming chaga every day in your morning coffee, smoothie or in supplement form can reduce stress. There is no denying the surge in the prevalence of these adaptogens.

P O S T- C O N C U S S I O N SYNDROME More than just a headache

E

Whole Person

By Mariel C. Kraus, OTR/L

veryone knows someone who has bumped their head or worse at one time or another, and many have experienced a concussion with short-term minor consequences. Parents of kids in sports have all had to sign the waiver for knowing the signs and symptoms of concussions and are mostly thought of as external contact with the head. However, concussions can also be caused by internal injury due to whiplash. During whiplash, the brain sloshes within the skull and may hit more than two inner surfaces, thus bruising the brain and causing headaches (a hallmark of concussions). Symptoms may resolve in a week or two, but if they continue beyond a week, it is called Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS) and may persist beyond a year. PCS accounts for 50 percent of concussion cases after three months and 15 percent after a year*, yet Washington State Department of L&I does not recognize PCS because it is not detected by CTScan or MRI, so an injured worker is ordered back to work within a short time only to fail at keeping their job, and his or her personal life also suffers. Having only a whiplash diagnosis, the injured person is usually treated for neck injury and expected to return to work, school or home management without restrictions within two weeks. There is little consideration for the symptoms that continue to impact sleep, concentration, mood and energy. Occupational therapists (OTs) are uniquely skilled in helping a person with PCS return to their pre-injury roles through task analysis and adaptation where optimal recovery may take more time.

Specialized Physical Therapies designed to Treat the

Below is a list of symptoms to consider when a concussion is suspected, and I highly urge that no symptom be disregarded out of fear of overreaction. The longer a brain injury goes untreated, the more severe the consequences and the permanence of the disability. Common Signs & Symptoms of a Concussion • Headache: can be acute and/or persistent • Whole body: fatigue, poor balance • Cognitive: amnesia, disorientation, confusion, fatigue • Sleep: sleep disturbances or sleepiness • Gastrointestinal: nausea or vomiting

in Body, Home, & Community!

Parkinson’s Comprehensive Therapies Post-Concussion Syndrome Automobile Injuries Balance & Vertigo

Also Common • Irritability and/or clinginess • Mild depression • Ringing in the ears or sound sensitivity • Sensitivity to light • Dizziness (Vertigo) Early recognition of symptoms is critical for recovery, so it is important to consult with your primary care provider/physician (PCP) who will order tests and make referrals for therapy. PCS is highly probable if symptoms persist beyond two weeks even when CT or MRI do not validate symptoms. You are your best self-advocate. Request a referral for an occupational therapy assessment and treatment for whole-person rehabilitation by a clinician who treats Post-Concussion Syndrome. *NCBI.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20938266

OTs apply a variety of modalities ranging from hands-on physical rehab to mitigate pain; adaptations for light and sound sensitivity; management of vertigo (dizziness); improving balance and concentration during selfcare activities. Some OTs are also trained in environmental assessments and modifications for optimal function. OTs are skilled patient advocates for school and work accommodations including extending the time for returning patients to their occupations.

ENJOYING MOVIES AND LIVE THEATER WITH HEARING LOSS HELPFUL HINTS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT BY KAY FRALLIC, MA, AUDIOLOGIST HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

T

hose of us with hearing loss are often nervous about going to the movies. We fear we won’t be able to understand the dialogue over the booming soundtrack. We may wait to buy a digital copy to watch in the privacy of our home, with captions on. The same goes for attending live theater. With theater ticket prices on the rise, those of us with hearing loss wonder if we should risk spending money on a show we might not fully understand. But times are changing. Many movie theaters now provide free captioning devices, and some live entertainment theaters are improving the hearing access of patrons with hearing difficulties. Movie theaters frequently offer free captioning devices. Most large chains now offer “closed caption” devices for all shows, like the Galaxy Uptown Luxury Theater in Gig Harbor. Go to the information booth or concession stand to borrow one and return it at the end of the movie. Most caption devices have an LED display attached to an adjustable support arm that fits into the cup holder of your seat. The device is private and doesn’t disturb other moviegoers around you. Some theaters offer captioned glasses that display the captions in the front of you as you watch the movie. Be sure the device works before the movie begins. Most previews are now captioned, which is a good way to test if the captions are legible. Arrive early so you have time to exchange a broken device for a new one before the movie starts. Sometimes theaters have a day of the week devoted to “open captioning” so movies

can be watched without extra equipment. The Grand Cinema in Tacoma offers Open Caption Wednesdays. They also offer neck loops for people with t-coil enhanced hearing aids and headsets for those without aids. Live theater is also expanding its accessibility options. At live performances, there are several options for hearing enhancement. Infrared headsets, the most common assistive device, are worn without hearing aids. Some theaters often offer FM systems as well. With these, you connect either by plugging in headphones or linking directly to your hearing aid via the telecoil setting. You may need to line up to get these devices, so plan on arriving at the venue early. Newer technologies like hearing loops are growing in popularity because of the excellent sound quality. It also allows people with t-coil enabled hearing aid or cochlear implant to tap into the loop directly. No other device is required. If you don’t have a t-coil enabled aid, explore hearing loop receiver earphones that can be used to tap into a hearing loop. Access to real-time captioning in sync with the live action is limited to certain performances. Captions appear on a display board located at one side of the stage. With these choices available, people with hearing loss no longer need to avoid the movies or live theater performances. Article summarized by permission from The Hearing Journal, October 2018.

HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT YOUR FEET By Darcie Miller, Light In Balance Reflexology

A Holistic approach to improved health

O

ne fourth of all of the bones in your body are in your feet, and there are 26 bones in each foot for a total of 52.

• Each of your feet has 33 joints (20 of which are actively articulated). • Each foot has more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. • Your feet carry the weight of your entire body, and how you stand or walk has a direct impact on your posture and balance. And that can also affect your health. Here is a breakdown of the mechanics of your foot: When you begin to walk, your heel strikes first; its role is shock absorption. As you continue your step, the lateral or outside edge of your foot and the fifth, fourth and third toes connect. Their role is stability. And lastly, you end each step with the second and first toe. This is your center of gravity and balance. If you stand or walk on the outside of your foot, you will be off balance, making you prone to falls, and resting on your heals can lead to pain in your hips, ankles, knees, legs and low back. Executing a correct step and full follow through with your steps also leads to overall improved health. You are probably wondering how? I am glad you asked. Located within

your feet are reflex points for all of your body’s systems and organs. By walking correctly, your whole body gets a nice little internal massage. Your skeletal, muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, endocrine and lymphatic systems are all working in tandem helping to propel you forward. A trained reflexologist will assess your gait and how you stand and may make some suggestions to help you improve your balance and how you walk. By walking upright instead of hunched over and shuffling, your posture can improve. In fact, you may actually find walking more pleasurable by using your whole foot because you would have less pain and will be able to see more of what is in front and around you instead of just the ground in front of you.

Reflexology can help alleviate pain associated with plantar fasciitis, foot tension, Morton’s neuroma and tired and achy feet. An added bonus is a reflexologist can work all of your body’s systems by applying gentle pressure to the reflex points in your feet, hands and/ or ears. Many people neglect their feet and put them through all sorts of abuse. Sometimes they wear shoes that do not fit correctly or wear the wrong shoe for a particular activity. So, how do your shoes fit? Stay tuned for fascinating information on shoes, your feet and your health.

P R A C T I C E H E A LT H Y LIVING TIPS TO GUIDE YOUR LOVED ONES WITH MEMORY DISORDERS TOWARD A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE By Angie Frantz, Executive Director at Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence

I

f you have a loved one who has been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, you likely are aware that these types of diseases progressively attack the brain, causing confusion and cognitive decline—decline in our ability to think, reason and communicate. But have you considered how a memory disorder might impact your loved one’s physical well-being? Just because someone is living with a memory disorder doesn’t mean their physical health has to suffer. Caregivers can help their loved ones maintain physical wellness while taking into consideration the unique challenges that seniors with Alzheimer’s may be facing. Here are some examples of these challenges and how you, as a caregiver, can help your loved one continue to live a healthy lifestyle.

• Exercise: Seniors already experience changes to their bodies associated with normal aging such as diminished vision, hearing loss and being more susceptible to falls. However, people with memory disorders are at even higher risk of falling down due to decreased coordination and spatial awareness. Encourage your loved one to maintain regular exercise to build muscle strength, improve balance and endurance and, ultimately, decrease the risk of falling and injuring themselves. • Nutrition: People with Alzheimer’s may not drink enough water or eat enough food to stay healthy as a result of confusion and memory loss. Support your loved one by offering juice, water and nutritious snacks throughout the day to keep them nourished. Consider asking them or keeping track of the foods they like and dislike and offer them their favorite meals or snacks to ensure they maintain a regular eating schedule. • Communication: Memory disorders make it harder for people to communicate when they are sick or if something has changed in

their bodies. If you notice sudden changes in mood or behavior in a loved one, it could be a sign of discomfort or a physical health issue like a UTI, sinus infection or dental problem. Don’t assume a change in temperament is part of the disease, and check for sources of pain that might not be as obvious, such as the feet. If you’re concerned, don’t hesitate to schedule a visit with their doctor. • Emotional health: Seniors with memory disorders are frequently diagnosed with depression and can experience sadness and loneliness. To support emotional health, caregivers can plan activities and outings for their loved ones to help keep them engaged. Remember to check in frequently to see how they’re doing—even a quick phone call can help brighten their day! Also, encourage them to take short “sunshine breaks,” as going outside for just 10 minutes on a sunny day will provide a sufficient dose of vitamin D while helping to boost their mood. • Personal care and hygiene: Maintaining self-hygiene can be challenging for individuals with Alzheimer’s, so they often rely on caregivers for assistance with bathing, changing clothes, brushing teeth and hair, and other acts of personal care. Support your loved one by approaching the topic of self-care with a positive attitude; providing simple choices; using life stories to make a connection; and being kind and supportive while protecting their dignity and privacy. Seniors with memory disorders often need support and encouragement to maintain a healthy lifestyle. By being aware of the key factors above, you will be well-equipped to help your loved one continue healthy living habits. It started as

an idea … Individuals making a big impact in their local communities BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF CHAFE150 AND RACE FOR A SOLDIER

I

deas are powerful. Something as simple as a passing thought can become something huge that impacts our daily lives, or something small impacting the people in our neighborhood. When the idea is something that could positively impact a community, others are usually quick to rally behind it. There are examples all over the Northwest of how an idea can bring together people from all backgrounds and walks of life to find common ground and to better their surroundings; two of which you can be a part of and make an immediate impact. CHAFE 150, Sandpoint, Idaho, June 15. CHAFE150.org It started as a simple idea from a local accountant, pitched to a small group around a table; something fun that would help raise some funds for the local school district. The Panhandle Alliance for Education (PAFE) is a group that looks to raise additional private funds for public schools in order to support programs that are either underfunded or wouldn’t be available with the current budget. Current board president Geraldine Lewis recalls the day board member Brad Williams pitched the idea of a bike ride as both a way of generating donations and bringing awareness to the cause. “There really were only about eight or nine of us conversing about ways to expand our group of private supporters for public education. We decided we had the right amount of elements and connections to make it work, so we decided to do it!” said Geraldine. As with most initial events, PAFE was just hoping to break even the first ride and really focus on getting the word out. A clever name, CHAFE 150, an acronym for ‘Cycle Hard for Education’, was created, and the group went to work utilizing their local connections in the business community to seek out sponsorships and volunteers. “Each of us was assigned a different task; someone in charge of the route, the marketing, the logistics, the food, and we just sort of figured it out as we went,” laughed Geraldine. The first CHAFE 150 drew about 45 riders along with several volunteer groups like local cycling clubs, Boy Scouts and other nonprofits manning the aid stations. Brad’s idea was now realized, and with the help of community members banding together, it would surely continue.

More riders continued to sign up, and more volunteers offered their time to help out. The event continued to grow—and so did the support for the Panhandle Alliance for Education’s Ready for Kindergarten program; a program to help parents get their children ready to attend kindergarten from age 0 to 5. Money raised from this ride went directly to the program and benefited dozens of families in the area. After five years of running the event, PAFE decided to pass it on to the Sandpoint Rotary, who would be better equipped and well connected to manage and operate the suddenly large annual event. “The transition was so smooth, everyone recognizes the rotary name, the business support is already in place, and now it just grows and grows each year, which is great,” said Geraldine. Mel Dick is co-chair of the CHAFE 150 alongside Brad, who continues to chair the event each year. Over the past seven years, the Sandpoint Rotary has increased the ridership participation and helped bring in title sponsors Timberline Helicopter and Ting, along with many other organizations like the Lake Pend Oreille School District, Angels Over Sandpoint, Friends of Scotchman Peaks and the YMCA. “Well over 100 volunteers are involved day of the event, and our ride organizing committee works on the ride year-round,” said Mel. The Rotary also realized they could attract more cyclists by adding additional ride distances. The first few years, only a 150-mile course was provided. Organizers decided to put in an 80-mile ‘Half CHAFE’

and, not long after, a 30-mile distance. This year, three more options are available including a 100-mile ride, 40-mile ride and 4-plus mile family fun ride. The CHAFE is a beautiful and challenging course that was just named No. 3 Best Charity Ride in the United States by Bicycling Magazine. “Now the ride is a full Gran Fondo, with multiple routes and an after-ride party open to all riders, their friends, family and the community as a whole,” said Mel. When the event was handed over to the rotary, proceeds continued to be presented to the school district. Over the past six years, $260,000 was donated to programs in support of students on the autism spectrum in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. This money has a huge impact for both students and families, as told by Sandpoint resident Patty Hutchens. “When my son Brett was in first grade, he was diagnosed with sensory integration dysfunction. It is a disorder that is on the autism spectrum. Although he is not autistic, he had to have some special accommodations in the classroom to help him focus and reach his full potential. The principal and the teacher had never even heard of this disorder, although it is very common. I paid for his speech and occupational therapists to come in and educate the principal and the teacher on this so they would have knowledge on the disorder and why special accommodations were needed to help him be successful. I often wondered what would happen with those families who did not have the resources to pay therapists to do that or just did not have the knowledge of their rights. “Since CHAFE 150 has been contributing funds to the program in the school district, all teachers are now aware of not only this disorder but so many others related to autism and are also educated on what they can do to help students. It has been a gift to the community.” The 2019-2021 rides will all continue to benefit the local school district, this time in support of after-

It started as a simple idea from a local accountant, pitched to a small group around a table; something fun that would help raise some funds for the local school district. GigHarborLivingLocal.com

school literacy programs and a new reading curriculum, according to Mel. The Sandpoint Rotary Club has also used funds for various community projects including a ‘teen room’ at the local library, a swing set and jungle gym at a playground, and funding for a book trust that funds monthly book purchases by students. Race for a Soldier, Gig Harbor, Washington, September 15. RaceForASoldier.org Born out of tremendous grief and a determined desire to help other veterans after her son overdosed in a Baltimore hotel room on March 7, 2009, just one day his discharge from the VA hospital, his mother, Leslie Mayne, decided the best way to honor Kyle’s memory and service to his country was to recruit family, friends and her community to help her create the first Race For A Soldier in 2011 in Gig Harbor, Washington. Kyle was 27 and had served as an infantryman in Iraq. This was the beginning of a movement that is bringing hope and healing for our veterans that help them make peace with their past by developing programs that foster “post

traumatic growth.” The Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation’s (PTSD) other events, Prayer Breakfast, Swing for A Soldier and Pull for a Soldier, have helped to raise awareness and support for the mission. Along the way, the foundation discovered a comprehensive wellness model that encompasses mind, body and spirit for our combat veterans and now includes our first responders. It is called Warrior PATHH (Progressive and Alternative Training for Healing Heroes). The goal is to build a strong foundation of leaders here in the Pacific Northwest for its own Northwest Passage wellness retreat and programs. Since 2011, the foundation has supported what it sees as effective and sustainable alternatives to the present resources offered for our veterans. The foundation plans to expand the impact and provide more of the same programs to veterans and first responders in the Pacific Northwest region. It is driven to seek and provide unwavering support for our returning warriors and first responders. Presently, the foundation runs a monthly huddle at the Heron’s Key retirement facility

in Gig Harbor; conducts quarterly Mind, Body and Spirit workshops that focus on “post traumatic growth”; and has begun to align itself with the new Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic in Lakewood, Washington. In 2019, the foundation will continue to send veterans and first responders from this area to strengthbased and proven innovative retreat programs. Leslie concentrates her energy and passion for those who serve, strengthening relationships and resources, as well as keeping her eyes open for more compassionate allies to come alongside her. The Run “After Kyle died, I felt the need to leave Gig Harbor and search for some answers and process my grief,” recalled Leslie. That road trip ended up in South Texas, and she lived with her aunt for six months, until Memorial Day weekend, and she returned. Her friend Kathy Davis Hayfield was the general manager at the Tides at the time and hired her to serve the patrons of that establishment. Knowing of her love for our military, Kathy

put Leslie in charge of “Buy a Soldier a Lunch” day on October 15, 2010. It was such a hit with the community and the 70 Green Beret who showed up—all about to leave for Afghanistan—that Leslie knew, after that day, she needed to do something bigger and more impactful that would speak to the needs of our military when they return. “The Race For A Soldier was born in my heart that day,” she said. She began to hit the streets, knock on doors and introduce herself to the mayor, the city leaders and anyone who would listen to her. Sue Braaten, a good friend and owner of the Wesley Inn Best Western Suites, advised Leslie to introduce herself to Miguel Galeana. Miguel, a renowned world-class runner and owner of Route 16 Running and Walking, happily agreed to help her organize and be the architect of the first half marathon in the area. Thirty or so friends and family met at a conference room free of charge at the Wesley Inn each month, planning for a year. Their dedication paid off as almost 1,100 people showed up for the first run. In addition to

This was the beginning of a movement that is bringing hope and healing for our veterans that help them make peace with their past. the race inception, Leslie added an event called the Prayer Breakfast, always two days before the race, which allows soldiers to share their inspirational and illuminating stories of overcoming the struggles of post-traumatic stress and making peace and finding purpose. It was standing-room only the first year, and continues to be each year since. The number of runners is now close to double.

“I was more grateful than surprised, and I’ve always known that the citizens of Gig Harbor and beyond are generous and caring. They live amongst our military, both active and retired. They want to be a part of the solution. We just had to find a way people could get involved in a tangible way,” said Leslie. From an initial run, the organization now hosts four annual events, each benefiting the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation. If you are a golfer, Swing for A Soldier is a terrific tournament; if you like competitive trap-shoot events, Pull for a Soldier offers that opportunity; and of course the Prayer Breakfast is the most illuminating and inspiring event of the year in the Gig Harbor area. These are the stories of two individuals with an idea; one combining a passion for cycling and education, the other a mother not wanting any other parent to go through a similar tragedy of losing a loved one to suicide. Both were inspired to make an impact on their community, and the ideas they brought to life have touched thousands of lives. Do you have an idea you’re pondering?

REMODELING ON A budget BY PATTY HUTCHENS

t’s been said that the kitchen is the most expensive room in the house to remodel. While this can be true when it comes to purchasing new appliances, flooring, cabinets and countertops, the good news is you can give your kitchen a fresh new look without having to spend thousands of dollars.

I

The first step is to identify a design style that reflects you. Are you a minimalist who likes a modern look? Or do you prefer a more layered, richly colored and accessorized space? Making style choices and staying within your budget will be easier if you know what you want. Maybe all your kitchen needs is a new wall color inspired by something you’ve seen online, in print or in person. A fresh coat of paint, new handles and drawer pulls or removing the cabinet doors altogether can go a long way to providing a whole new look to the place where your family spends a great deal of time and where you love to entertain. "Changing out cabinetry hardware is one of the easiest and quickest updates," says HGTV's Scott McGillivray, author of “How to Add Value to Your Home.” He advises to look for colorful options or a brushed nickel finish. Cabinetry, which has traditionally been fairly neutral in color, is also the place where people can now be more creative and add a bit of their personality to their kitchen. After all, our kitchen cabinets set the tone for the rest of the kitchen and can also have a big impact on the overall design of your home, especially if you have an open floor plan.

Thankfully painting, as opposed to the much more expensive option of replacing cabinets, has been much easier with the development of new paint products. But before you begin, remember this project can be a lengthy process, so plan accordingly. You will need to remove and store everything in your cabinets, and the doors and drawers will also need to be removed. And before you begin, all the surfaces which will be painted must be thoroughly cleaned.

Many people are opting to use two different colors when redoing cabinets—one color for the upper cabinets and another for the lower ones. You can also choose to paint a kitchen island a different color for some contrast. After you are done with painting, consider replacing existing doors with glass-paneled ones, something McGillivray says looks like a major upgrade. "Opt for frosted glass if you feel like your shelves aren't displayworthy, he advises, “Or ditch the doors all together to create the effect of

open shelving. I've done this in kitchens to create a lighter space. Display your favorite dishes and bowls to add a bit of interest to the room. Another way to freshen up your kitchen is by painting an accent wall. If all your walls are a light color, designers recommend painting your accent wall at least two shades deeper for the best effect. Sometimes giving your kitchen a new look can be as simple as cleaning out the clutter. Remove everything from the walls, countertops, windows and tops of cabinets so you can see the kitchen as a clean slate. Then you can begin by accessorizing with a few well-proportioned, carefully placed items to reinvigorate the room with a fresh style. This is also a way to add a pop of color either through countertop appliances or decorative items. Other inexpensive ways to give your kitchen a new look include changing out your lighting. With so many options available when it comes to color and style, especially when you are looking to utilize pendant lights, you can

significantly change the look of your kitchen with this simple upgrade. Kristy Kropat, an interior designer based in San Francisco, recommends AllModern.com, YLighting.com and LampsPlus.com to begin your search for inexpensive and unique lighting options. Adding a backsplash, bold or simple, can do much to add some contrast and style. Most kitchens do not have a lot of backsplash area, so whether you choose to do it yourself or hire a contractor, you shouldn’t have to spend an exorbitant amount of money. If your home is like most, the kitchen is the place where people love to gather. How about making some room for a nice window bench to offer additional seating when entertaining? Do you find that you have a dining area separate from your kitchen that is seldom used? Consider removing your kitchen table and making your dining room area the place where

you eat each evening as a family and where you entertain friends and family. I know one family that did this and replaced the kitchen table area with two easy chairs near a bay window. They find they spend much more time together while preparing dinner and are able to enjoy what was once their formal dining area much more often. Lastly, make the most of your resources! Another sure way to keep your costs of upgrading at a minimum is to call upon friends and family members who have special talents. Maybe ask them to help out in exchange for you providing some services to them. Do you have a friend who is exceptionally good at painting who maybe could use help with watching her kids on occasion? Is installing a backsplash a skill you think would be fun to learn? By participating in the process, you will not only save money and learn a new skill, but you’ll have fun and have a sense of pride when you look at the finished product!

Work of Art Make Your House a

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

Surround yourself with things that elicit joy hen it comes to our homes, we like to do what we can to personalize it and make it a true reflection of ourselves. What better way to do that than through the art we choose to place on our walls? Art, in any form, can evoke strong emotions and can bring joy to our lives—whether it is a painting of a special place with fond memories, photos of our family and friends or even something as simple as our children’s artwork.

W

There aren’t a lot of “dos and don’ts” when it comes to decorating your walls, unlike when choosing furniture and paint color. Art is a place to express yourself through color, content and texture. And remember, art is not just about choosing wall hangings; it can include sculptures and rugs as well. Before you begin, decide what “look” is most appealing to you. Do you like to display your art in neat rows? Or do you want it to be eclectic

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

with no real rhyme or reason to how it is presented? Once you decide on the type of arrangement you would like, then you can decide upon your starting point. This will be the focal point, or the anchor, to your other pieces, so pick something that reflects a feeling you want to echo throughout the room. Perhaps it is a piece of art you have had a long time, or you may want to purchase something new. Many people choose to have one large piece of art as opposed to other smaller pieces around an anchor piece. This can make a large impact when displayed in a prominent area. Some of the best art is often the least expensive and provokes a sentimental feeling. Kids’ artwork is something that parents love to save. But what good is it if you stick it away in a box only to discover it years later when cleaning out storage boxes or getting ready to move? Preserve their artwork in a frame for all to enjoy! There are also several inexpensive ways to display your favorite

photographs. Groupon frequently offers coupon deals to turn your digital photos into canvas prints. It’s a great way to preserve memories and display photos of family trips, senior pictures and photos of grandparents and other loved ones. Interior Designer Nikki Luttmann states that for gallery walls, try to group “like with like.” “Black-and-white prints look great with other black-and-white prints. Gold-framed oil paintings look great with other gold-framed oil paintings. If, however, your collection is a little more eclectic, that's OK too,” she says. But whether you choose a more formal arrangement with symmetry and a coordinating theme or an informal arrangement with an eclectic blend of artwork displayed randomly, be sure to space out the different elements equally on your gallery wall, paying close attention to how far apart things are. Nikki recommends a sure-fire way to guarantee everything will look good is to lay it all out on the floor ahead of time. “Another trick is to use blue painter's tape to mask where items go on your walls. This lets you clearly see the layout even before getting out your hammer.” Also, the right tools are important. For art hanging, you will need nails, hooks, a hammer, a pencil, blue tape, a tape measure and—most importantly—a level. “There's nothing worse than hanging a heavy piece of art or a mirror on your walls only to find out it hangs two inches too high on one side,” says Nikki. She shares that she recently learned of Command wallhanging solutions, a 3M product, which rely on a highpowered adhesive to adhere your art to the walls. “Because you are not putting actual holes in your walls, it can feel a little less daunting to do a gallery wall if you use Command strips.” It can also be helpful if you are one who likes to change things up often. One of the most common mistakes Nikki sees is artwork that is hung too high. “When placing your art, the rule of thumb for galleries and art museums is that the center of the piece hangs at about eye-level, if possible,” recommends Nikki. “If you are very petite or very tall, this can be a little hard to determine, but figure the center of the piece to be at about 5 feet off the ground for a professional look.” Other ways you can group things together is to incorporate a picture ledge onto your wall. It’s a simple and inexpensive way to display your art collection. Whether you opt for a single ledge or decide to group them, they're the perfect solution to fill a blank space. If you are trying to brighten up a smaller room, hanging a mirror can catch light and help “expand” the room. There are many different decorative mirrors available, allowing you to find most anything to fit the style you are looking for! When decorating your walls, don’t forget about greenery. By placing a tall potted plant next to a piece of large-scale wall art, it can help bring the outside indoors and add interest to a specific area you wish to accentuate. Whatever you choose, the goal is to find something that makes you happy. “The best way to decide if something is right for your walls is if you love it. Remember, your home is a reflection of who you are—your likes and dislikes," says Nikki. “Artwork is very personal and evokes emotion like nothing else in your home, so by hanging art you truly love, your space will feel uniquely ‘you.’”

IMPROVE YOUR HOME SIMPLE TIPS TO

BEFORE SELLING

QUICK TIPS TO YIELD THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK |

BY KIRSTEN MADDEN, BROKER

Are first Impressions important? You bet your pocketbook they are! You only get one chance to make a great impression. When you decide to sell your home, it is no longer your private family abode but rather a “new listing” to be showcased to the most scrutinizing homebuyers and their real estate agents. Here are some simple, cost-effective tips to assist you in making the greatest impact on potential buyers while achieving top dollar for your home.

S T U F F, S T U F F A N D M O R E STUFF—DECLUTTER

DON’T GO IT ALONE, HIRE A PRO M A K E I T S PA R K L E

Take a tour of your home both inside and out. You are going to be packing everything for your move anyway, why not get a jump start on it! Take inventory and scrutinize everything. Pack up items that are not in use and don’t add to the overall appeal of your home; rent a storage unit if you have to. The goal is to minimize the personal effects while maximizing your home. Pay attention to your furnishings. Oversized or too much furniture shrinks the appearance of your home. You want potential buyers to imagine their stuff in the home rather than yours. Photos of your home are going to be showcased all over the Internet, and strangers are going to be going through your home on a regular basis. Stay safe and pack up valuable jewelry, firearms and other precious collectibles.

Now that you have gotten the excess stuff out of your way, it is time to spring into a deep clean. Get into all the nooks and crannies; clean, polish and organize everything. Take time to clean the forgotten, such as inside and under cabinets, windows (inside and out), ceiling fans, light fixtures, closets, garage, storage sheds and the yard. Check light bulbs and smoke detectors.

Now that your home is sparkling, it is time to invite the professional. Schedule an on-site consultation with a neighborhood Realtor. Your home is an asset and should be treated as such. You need a professional on your side. Your Realtor’s job is to sell your home at the best possible price and make that process easy for you. Your Realtor is good at his/her job and will advise you on repairs or upgrades that will yield the best return and help you price your home for the market. Never trust some vague online valuation when pricing your home. Your home deserves the personal attention and expertise of your area Realtor. Your home will get the most attention in the first couple weeks of listing, so it is important to get it right from the start.

USE PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY GET A PRE-SALE INSPECTION

You can hire a home inspector for a presale inspection for a couple hundred dollars, and this is money well spent. The inspector will inform you of any potential issues, many of which can be repaired quite inexpensively if done at this stage. Consider hiring a handyman to correct issues found by the inspector. If you wait for the buyer to request repairs, you will likely be required to hire a licensed contractor, plumber or electrician, possibly costing more money than necessary.

SHOW IT OFF!

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” so it’s important to get your home picture perfect. Frequently your Realtor will arrange this for you. Thanks to Internet marketing, your photos will reach the four corners of this round earth. Buyers spend countless hours looking at homes on their smart devices long before they actually plan any visits. You want yours to be a favorite. Do not settle for poor photographs.

Now that you have your house on the market and ready for showings, you can relax, grab a glass of wine (or cup of coffee) and revel in your hard work. However, there are a few things you should do before your scheduled showing appointments: Tidy up, replace bathroom and kitchen linens, turn on all of the lights and open the blinds, remove litter boxes, and finally leave the house and take Fido with you. Let your Realtor do his/her job and wait for the offers!

Cannon Beach

Stunning Coastline and Charming Seaside Village Beach walks, fresh local seafood and luxurious lodging make for a perfect vacation STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

C

annon Beach was named by National Geographic as one of the world’s 100 Most Beautiful Places in June 2013 as well as the staff ’s pick for Best Beach Towns in July 2014. With the Oregon icon, Haystack Rock, dominating the beach, it is easy to see why it earned these monikers. The village of Cannon Beach manages to have a sleepy, small-town vibe yet has all the amenities that visitors desire. Its architecture is reminiscent of East Coast island beach towns like Martha’s Vineyard. With scenery this lovely, plan your trip around time exploring the beach and coastline views, meandering through local shops, art galleries and restaurants, and throw in a day trip along the coast. There are many lodging options in Cannon Beach, but I just love a good beach house. During my stay I called the Baker Beach Cottage home, conveniently located within a short walk to the beach and Haystack Rock. Or head the other direction and you are a few houses down from town. This cute cottage offered all the comforts of home and had some fun extras like an outdoor fire pit with Adirondack chairs and a separate bunkhouse with two sets of bunk beds to sleep four in addition to the three-bedroom cottage. Beachcomber Vacation Homes offers a variety of rentals in various sizes and price points. The Beach North Coast beaches are a wonder to behold with sandy beaches speckled with rocks and cliffs. Whether you pull off at viewpoints or walk for miles on the beach, you will want to make beachcombing a big part of your

trip. There are usually warning signs posted near the beach; when visiting Oregon beaches, always make sure to read the warnings about sneaker waves and tsunamis. The beaches can also be chilly even in the warmer months, so dress in layers to stay warm. Start with the almost 4 miles of beach surrounding Haystack Rock. Familiarize yourself with a tidal chart. Low tide is the best time to see tidal pools and to get a closer look at the “Rock.” From February to April, the Haystack Rock Awareness Program has volunteers that set up each day to provide visitors with printed resources and knowledge about Haystack Rock. In April you can see the cute Tufted Puffins nesting. For a great overlook of the village and Haystack Rock, drive up to Ecola State Park which has panoramic views of Cannon Beach and the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, as well as scenic hikes. You don’t want to miss Hug Point State Recreation Site, which is 3 miles south of Cannon Beach. Make sure to visit around low tide for the best experience. Enjoy the sounds of rushing water at the beachside waterfall. There are sea caves and rounded rocks covered with bright green seaweed, which make this a great place for photos. Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site, a short two-minute drive south of Cannon Beach, offers a long beach walk that connects to Hug Point. It is worth a stop on its own merits and provides a unique beach with great views.

Food The area has a bounty of Pacific Northwest culinary delights from craft distilleries and breweries to local farmers markets. One place you don’t want to miss is the Ecola Seafoods Restaurant and Market, a favorite with locals and visitors alike. After recovering from a fire last July in the midst of their peak season, they are back in business in a beautiful space which serves as a market and restaurant. The Beckmans run a family owned enterprise with husband Jay operating two fishing boats to provide fresh, local seafood and wife Cindy who runs the market and restaurant. They succeed through word of mouth. “People come because they are getting fish from boat to table, sustainably line-and-hook caught with no gill nets. Our seafood is not farm raised and that makes a big difference,” said Cindy. It really does make a huge difference in taste. You can purchase a variety of fish, crab or shrimp to take home or order from the counter and enjoy on site. Two must-haves are the halibut fish and chips and an Oregon shrimp and Dungeness crab boat. This melding of two allows you to have both, and it is so good and fresh. You can enjoy with the Beckman’s homemade cocktail sauce but that crab with a squirt of lemon is to die for.

The Village

Road Trip

The village is such a fun place to stroll around. At the end of Taft Street (where the Baker Beach Cottage is located) sits the EVOO Cannon Beach Cooking School. This fun business offers cooking shows where you watch a chef prepare a gourmet meal and you get to eat it too. Check their calendar for availability. If not, make sure to stop by and visit their shop with a variety of cooking-related merchandise. Bruce’s Candy Kitchen is always a hit with house-made candy as well as a great selection of what I call ‘vintage candies,’ which are those fun products you grew up with. There is a local market for groceries. I always love a good wine shop of which there are two. The area is a nice easy stroll with art galleries and lots of other cute shops.

Plan to take a day and drive down the coast to Tillamook to tour the cheese factory and have some of their great ice cream. Grab a North Coast Food Trail guide, which has some great suggestions for things to see and do. The little towns of Manzanita, Wheeler, Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi are so quaint and worth a stop for coffee or lunch. On my trip I drove straight to Tillamook with a stop in Manzanita for lunch and then slowly worked my way back to Cannon Beach with numerous stops along the way. Many of the marinas you will pass sell seafood and will cook crab for you when in season. A short detour from the coast is Nehalem. Stop into the Nehalem Bay Winery and enjoy a glass of wine on the deck overlooking farmlands before heading back to Cannon Beach for the sunset. If you are running late, as the sun comes down fast, there are plenty of scenic overlooks to stop at.

You may want to drive from this side of town further north to the Cannon Beach Hardware & Public House. This cool, kitschy place is a local favorite and is known as Oregon’s first hardware store to serve beer and wine. Yes, you can enjoy a brew while you shop the aisles. This is one of those stores that have a little bit of everything. While in the area make sure to visit The Sleepy Monk for coffee. This place was recommended over and over by locals, and it is a popular joint.

A

n event that brings together community members, local organizations and businesses, and paddling enthusiasts from across the Pacific Northwest, the Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup returns once again April 27 and 28. “We are always awed by the sense of community that is evident throughout the event and feel fortunate to be able to live and play in such a wonderful and beautiful place,” says Kirsten Gregory, Gig Harbor Paddlers Cup event coordinator. This annual community event features paddle racing for kayaks, canoes, stand-up and prone paddleboards, outriggers and para-canoes, and dragon boat races.

BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

are expecting about 300 participants over the course of the two-day event, and if the weather is favorable you can expect Skansie Park to be packed with participants and spectators. Those in attendance will enjoy watching the exciting racing over both days and learn from the expert event announcer. “They can expect highenergy, good-spirited competition in a family friendly environment,” says Kirsten. “They will have a chance to win a brand new kayak, do a little shopping, grab some lunch and enjoy Downtown Gig Harbor at its best.” In addition, spectators can expect to be introduced to the paddling opportunities the community has to offer to youth, adults and para-paddlers, as well as learn about the exciting new public paddling resources coming to Ancich Waterfront Park.
