PUBLISHER Make Memories That Last

Get your car ready for summer and vacation time!

While it is still summer, for many, this month signifies preparing our kids for the upcoming school year that is right around the corner. And for some, it will be a time when we take our child to college for the first time. There is a cartoon that has circulated around social media a great deal over the past couple of years — it shows a child leaving for kindergarten gripping onto his mother, obviously not wanting to leave her. The next frame shows a young adult enthusiastically leaving for college; but in this photo, it is the parents holding tightly onto the child. If you are a parent, you know all too well how fast time goes by. It slips through our fingers like a tiny grain of sand. Unable to stop it, we often long for those days when our children were younger. Giving our children roots and also the courage to move forward confidently in life is one of the best gifts we can offer our kids. In addition, there is the gift of memories. So whether you are a parent of toddlers, young teens or college-age students, I encourage you to get out and make the best memories you can. It is a gift that will last a lifetime. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

HOME & ESSENTIALS Tips & the Latest Trends

Family Law: Living Together WHEN UNMARRIED COUPLES SEPARATE.

BY ATTORNEY RICHARD PATRICK.

Sometimes things don’t work out as planned in our personal relationships. When it is necessary to part from someone we have been in a serious relationship with, and live separate lives, we usually are talking about divorce. However, these days, it is often the case that the parties were never married. When unmarried parties separate, dividing personal items and belongings is usually a simple matter. One party takes his/her things, and the other takes theirs. Sometimes the parties have acquired items during the relationship that belong to each other. In those cases, the parties will need to agree to divide the items they own together, or in some instances, sell the items and divide the cash. If the parties have purchased real estate together, they can continue to own it together or have one party buy the other out of their interest. In cases where parties have entered contracts or agreements as a pair, special care needs to be taken in how those contracts and agreements will be honored; for example, lease agreements with a property owner. If both parties are on the lease, the property owner still wants the rent and wants it from both parties. In those cases, you need to speak to your property owner and rewrite the lease for the person staying, or the parties need to enter into an additional written agreement between themselves that details who is responsible for the rent. In a perfect world, that additional agreement would be something the parties entered into prior to signing a lease

agreement together. You also see this situation with vehicle purchases. If parties have children together, it is necessary to have what is called a Residential Schedule drawn up and approved by the court. This document details who the children live with and who has residential time (also called visitation). It will also be necessary to establish child support. It has become common in our society for folks to live together and not be married. If the relationship ends, there are many of the same issues concerning children, and the division of property that folks getting divorces face. If you live in a relationship with someone and are not married, take time to have open and frank discussions with your partner about what might happen if you split up. Put your ideas into a written document so if the relationship does end, you can minimize the surprises and difficulties of separation. Out of Your Box and Into Your Genius A CHANGE IN PERSPECTIVE.

The Box has a thousand names, but until you bump up against it, you may not even know it’s there. Though invisible, people talk about their box nearly every day. You’ll hear it in the words to describe limitations. If you feel stuck, long for a breakthrough or have a deep sense that there’s something more, you’re bumping the edge of the box. The common idiom to “think outside the box” reminds us we know THE BOX all too well. We tend to live where we’re comfortable rather than step to the edge of what we know. Consequently, we may discover a box we’ve unknowingly lived in for a very long time.

BY DEBORAH OLIVE.

Freedom Identifying the things that matter provides vastly more freedom.

18

That experience stands out over two decades later. Her simple act gifted me with a number of lessons. First and foremost, she provided a new perspective, one of the doorways into genius. I’d never seen someone manage a schedule in that fashion, and I realized the person standing in front of me wasn’t trapped by time. I enrolled in a time management class. Perhaps you’re laughing at this point. We don’t manage time. Each day has 24 hours. All we can manage are our activities through time. I invested a small fortune in time management classes before I understood the significance of Albert Einstein’s words:

For years, my default box was “not enough time.”

“You can’t solve the problem at the same level you created it.”

As a busy sales professional in my late 20’s, I planned my months and days to meet my sales goals, packing as much as I possibly could into 24 hours. My colleagues seemed to do the same, and I thought filling every minute of the day was necessary for success.

My friend’s perspective started a cascade of events to alter my relationship with time. Time management was a start, but it was in the same box. Identifying the things that matter most took me outside the box and provides vastly more freedom.

That changed when a friend invited me to her home for dinner. I pulled out my calendar only to discover I had no open dates for over a month. A retired lieutenant colonel, she grabbed my calendar out of my hands and started crossing through appointments. “You can delegate those,” she said. “Which night are you coming to dinner?”

With a different perspective, we see the box for what it is. It’s then that we have options. We can study the box from inside, discover how it’s put together, find the weak point and break it down. We can step outside the box and shout “free at last.” However we do it, a shift in perspective empowers us to step out of the box. I don’t

Why Don’t My Kids Want My Stuff? MAKING PEACE AND LETTING GO. BY SARAH FRIESEN, GIG HARBOR HOME MANAGEMENT. “A seismic shift of stuff is underway in homes all over America. Members of the generation that once embraced sex, drugs and rock-and-roll are trying to offload their place settings for 12, family photo albums and leather sectionals. Their offspring don’t want them.” —The Washington Post, 3/27/15 Whether you’re a baby boomer becoming an empty nester or a parent of a baby boomer downsizing into a senior community, the dilemma is the same: you’ve spent your life collecting meaningful treasures … and now your children don’t want them.

✓ House

Cleaning Specially trained:

Here are a few tips for making peace with your own downsizing and de-cluttering process:

Relocation Services

Give your kids permission to throw out their own trophies, yearbooks and t-shirts saved in your basement for decades. Gen Xers and Millennials live life digitally; perhaps taking a picture of the memorabilia is better suited to their lifestyle. Treasure the memory, laugh at the good times it brought you, and say goodbye.

If you’re the parent of a baby boomer, recognize that your adult child already has a home of her own, and may not have space for your favorite items. And your grandchildren are living in smaller homes, or still transient as they settle into careers. Although you may desperately want to save them money

LIVINGLOCAL

with your hand-me-downs, understand that this generation simply operates differently. Remember that it isn’t that your kids don’t love you – they just don’t love your furniture. Auction houses and thrift shops are flooded with furniture pieces. Consignments stores have either closed due to a declining market or they’re so selective on which items they’ll consign that many clients are turned away. If your kids don’t want your items and there isn’t a local option for selling, find a reputable organization like the NW Furniture Bank. Knowing that your furniture is going to a good cause can help ease the pain of giving it away. Accept that your children or grandchildren may not be as nostalgic as your generation. It’s difficult, but important for your family relationships. Record your family history in ways that conserve space and make it easier to share with others—such as digitizing the stacks of photo albums or taking pictures of family heirlooms and writing the relevant family history behind it. Remind yourself that there is great freedom in letting go, even when the process is difficult. Be easy on yourself and find a way to say goodbye to the item, while treasuring the memory that it gives you. Be grateful for the journey it took with you. And let it go.

Inflation and Your Retirement Income Strategy

Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, ERIN ABRIGO.

You might not think much about inflation. After all, it’s been quite low for the past several years. Still, you may want to take it into account when you’re planning your retirement income strategy. Of course, no one can really predict the future course of inflation. But it’s a pretty safe bet it won’t disappear altogether — and even a mild inflation rate, over time, can strongly erode your purchasing power. Consider this: If you were to purchase an item today for $100, that same item in 25 years would cost you $209, assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%. That’s a pretty big difference. During your working years, you can hope that your income will at least rise enough to match inflation. But what about when you retire? How can you minimize the impact of inflation on your retirement income? One thing you can certainly do is include an inflation assumption in your calculations of how much annual income you’ll need. The number you choose as an inflation factor could possibly be based on recent inflation levels, but you might want to err on the conservative side and use a slightly higher figure. Since you may be retired for two or three decades, you might have to periodically adjust the inflation factor to correspond to the actual inflation rate. Another important step is maintaining an investment portfolio that can potentially provide returns well above the inflation rate. Historically, stocks have been the only investment category — as opposed to investments such as Treasury bills and longterm government bonds — whose returns have significantly outpaced inflation. So you may want to consider owning an appropriate percentage of stocks and stock-based investments in your portfolio, even during your retirement years. Now, you might be concerned at the mention of the words “stocks” and “retirement years” in the same sentence. After all, stocks will fluctuate in value, sometimes dramatically,

and even though you may be retired for a long time, you won’t want to wait for years to “bounce back” from a bad year in the market. But not all investments move in the same direction at the same time; spreading your dollars among a range of asset classes — large stocks, small and mid-cap stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs), foreign investments and so on — may help you reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. And you don’t even have to rely solely on stocks to help combat inflation. You could also consider Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS. When you purchase a TIPS, your principal increases with inflation and decreases with deflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index. Your TIPS pay interest twice a year, at a fixed rate; this rate is applied to the adjusted principal, so your interest payments will rise with inflation and fall with deflation. When your TIPS matures, you will receive adjusted principal or original principal, whichever is greater. As is the case with other bonds, though, you could choose to sell your TIPS before it matures.* Work with your financial advisor to help decide what moves are right for you to help protect your retirement income from inflation. It may be a “hidden” threat, but you don’t want to ignore it. *Yield to maturity cannot be predetermined, due to uncertain future inflation adjustments. If TIPS are sold prior to maturity, you may receive less than your initial investment amount. If bonds are not held in a taxadvantaged account, investors will be required to pay federal taxes on the accredited value annually, although they will not receive any principal payment until maturity. When the inflation rate is high and the principal value is rising significantly, the taxes paid on TIPS may exceed interest income received. Therefore, TIPS may not be suitable for investors who depend on their investments for living expenses.

Cultivate Culture by Salvaging Structures “PROTECT THE PAST. SHAPE THE FUTURE.” (PART 2 OF 2)

BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS. PHOTOS COURTESY OF BRETT MARLO DESANTIS.

Whether it’s a house, barn, theater, notable fishing site, garden, sculpture or commercial building, we quite literally shape the future of our communities by protecting the past. In part one last month, we discussed why cultivating our cultural resources, buildings, objects, archeological sites and their surroundings creates a beautifully diverse environment. Let’s take a closer look at how to determine if your structure will qualify as historic, the incentives, and the fame you may achieve from your preservation project. There are the seven qualities to assess when considering a historic designation. The goal is to understand the property, its time period, history, and its materials. • Location. Consider the structure’s current location, orientation and height; if moved, where it was originally constructed. • Design. Explore the elements of design that create the form, plan, space, structure and style. • Setting. Examine the environment, site conditions and other resources of the property. • Materials. Investigate physical elements that were combined or deposited during a particular period of time and in a particular pattern or configuration.

22

• Workmanship. Study the physical evidence of the crafts of a particular culture or people during the given period in history. • Feeling. Sense of history; discover the property’s expression of the aesthetic or historic sense of a particular period of time. • Association. Seek context; connect the link between an important historic event or person and the property. All seven qualities do not need to be present for eligibility as long as the overall sense of past time and place is evident. After you have completed your assessment and decided that your structure does have a story to tell, nominate your property. Will it be for the local register, the state, or the national? Tell your story. Use a summary paragraph to outline your case. State under which criteria the property is being nominated. Provide a map, show orientation with a north arrow and a legend identifying any other resources on the site. Accurately describe the character-defining features. Include images of all four elevations of the structure,

WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM AUGUST 2015

and label them properly. If available, include pictures of the original building and close-ups of the existing defining features. Economic benefits of historic preservation include an increase in property values, managing valuable resources and the opportunity to receive historic tax credits. According to Washington State Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation, the Federal Historic Tax Credit Program encourages preservation of the built environment by providing incentives such as a 20% federal income tax credit on qualified private investments on certified rehabilitations.

Seven Qualities All seven qualities do not need to be present for eligibility as long as the overall sense of past time and place is evident.

The income tax credit can be applied over 20 years or you can apply for a special valuation. A special valuation revises the assessed value of a historic property. The value of approved rehab costs is then subtracted, for up to ten years, from your property taxes. Last but not least, let’s not overlook fame. It’s appealing…you could be on WISAARD, Washington’s award winning online GIS map tool for locating designated historical sites which are listed on the state and national registry. A Rare Beauty ANIKKA ABBOTT USES HER VOICE TO THRILL AUDIENCES.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

24

It all began when Anikka Abbott was eight years old and became a cantor at Gig Harbor’s Agnus Dei Lutheran Church. That year, she developed a love of singing that would eventually lead her to studying and performing opera professionally. Since then, she has been a member of several vocal groups, including the Tacoma Youth Chorus, Gig Harbor High School Meistersingers, and Pacific Lutheran University’s Choir of the West. It’s easy to see why audiences love Abbott. With her flowing strawberry-blonde hair and an infectious smile, she is as beautiful as she is talented. With her strong, coloratura soprano voice and her ability to wow audiences, Abbott recently won the talent portion of the Miss Washington pageant and became first-runner up to Miss Washington 2015.

Hailing from Gig Harbor, and a recent graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, Abbott has easily won the hearts of the public with her incredibly mature singing voice. She has tackled advanced pieces such as the “Queen of the Night” aria, in its original German, from Mozart’s comedic opera “The Magic Flute”. Aside from her tremendous talent, Abbott has a passion for opera performance. “I love opera because it is truly an all-encompassing art form,” said Abbott. “We don’t have a word for that in English, but in German it is ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’. In opera, every type of artist is involved — from the singer, to the instrumentalist, to the composer, to the conductor, to the lighting designer, to the set designer, to the makeup artist, to the wig artist, to the backdrop painter, to the

prop creator.” In June, Abbott had the opportunity to sing with the Choir of the West in Europe. They performed in concert halls and ancient cathedrals across Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Abbott credits much of her success to the opportunities provided through her association with the Miss America pageant. She first became interested in the evening gown portion of the pageant when, as a little girl, she and her mother would watch the competition together. When Abbott was admitted to Pacific Lutheran University, she soon learned of the scholarship opportunities sponsored through the Miss America organization. “I became interested in participating in Miss America pageants my first year in college, when I was searching for scholarships to finance my education. I learned that it is the largest scholarship program for women in the world, giving $45 million annually. I have made almost $10,000 through the Miss America Program. That is about 1,000 hours at one of my campus jobs.” Since its first competition, held in 1921, the Miss America organization has been about empowering young women to become the best versions of themselves. Abbott has felt very supported by the pageant. She noted, “Every level of the organization — local, state, and national — teaches invaluable interview skills, leadership skills, stage presence, and confidence. The program promotes community involvement and education.” Today’s young contestants are bravely tackling difficult topics through their platforms. Abbott speaks out against domestic violence and stalking. She encountered the distress of being

stalked during her freshman year in college. “An acquaintance from Gig Harbor followed me to college, where he did not attend. My friends and I began to notice that he appeared everywhere I was and then he began to send gifts and love letters.” Recently, Abbott was the featured speaker at the Gig Harbor Midday Rotary Club where she spoke about her platform, “Prevention Through Empowerment: Ending Domestic Violence and Stalking”. Abbott is also the current reigning Miss Washington Sweetheart and will compete in the Miss National Sweetheart pageant later this summer. This pageant was founded in 1941 for first-runner up contestants from the Miss America state pageants.

In two years, Abbott plans to attend graduate school, studying vocal performance in Germany or New York. In the meantime, she is preparing for the Miss National Sweetheart pageant. If you would like to see Abbott’s vocal performances, she will be holding a benefit recital for the YWCA at Agnus Dei Lutheran Church on Peacock Hill on Sunday, August 16. MAKE YOUR HOME SHINE Protecting your biggest asset. By Melissa Murdock. Photos courtesy of Harbor Home Pro. Jamie Lazares launched Harbor Home Pro in November 2012 after returning to Gig Harbor from Japan, where he last served in the military. He credits his service as First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps for the accomplishments he has made in owning his own business. “The Corps instilled good things — starting with a solid set of standards.” Lazares used the solid foundation he gained from the military to build a successful business model. “I believe we make a difference for a lot of folks here in Gig Harbor simply by blessing them with a good old-fashioned high-quality product … and it’s a lot of fun making people smile, too.” Although Lazares is an FAA certified air traffic controller, he decided that the opportunity for creativity and entrepreneurship through his small business in Gig Harbor was more of an attraction. “It’s a real hoot being a small business in this community. I go out all day and get to meet new customers. We talk for a minute about getting their beach home brightened up and then we sit and talk fishing secrets or recent Seahawk trades. Life is good here.” During his leisure time, Lazares likes to salmon fish, backpack and travel. Some of his best adventures were backpacking, mountaineering and exploring the Yukon Territory of Canada,

Israel and Egypt. “My time in Israel was the greatest adventure of my life. That place bubbles with culture and is an unending adventure that walks you through the Biblical paths you read about in Sunday school as a child.” Lazares specializes in home exterior maintenance. His business is well known in the harbor for the quality of work, professionalism and enthusiastic approach to doing what it takes to make customers happy. Their website, harborhomepro.com, boasts of their outstanding reputation on angieslist. com and also features great small business characteristics. Testimonials found on the website prove that he consistently meets the high standards he has set for his company. The reason Lazares does such great business is because he cares not only about the quality of his work, he also takes interest in his clients. By the end of a business day, his customers have become his friends. When it comes to policy, his customers are always right and always happy. In 2014, Harbor Home Pro was the recipient of angieslist.com’s Superior Service Award for Washington State in all four categories. This is a task that is not easily achieved. The business earned an A-plus rating on the site, which is based on over 80 A-rated customer reviews.

Along the Waterfront Obscure facts, tall tales, and wild critters. By Julianna Verboort. Photos courtesy Downtown Waterfront Alliance.

Think you know Gig Harbor? You might be surprised! Try the new, free and friendly Saturday morning guided waterfront walks and you are guaranteed to learn something. The Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance partnered with Harbor WildWatch and the Harbor History Museum to bring this lively activity to the community. “Each of the partner organizations has contributed a lot to make this happen,” says Josh Sherwin, Special Projects Coordinator for the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. “The History Museum confirmed research and facts and provided the historic photos used on the tour. Harbor WildWatch provides wildlife expertise and hands-on experiences. The tour is appealing for all ages. The walk is fun and entertaining. It turns our town into an experience. It shares hidden history and gives visitors a behind-the-scenes view of Gig Harbor.” On a deeper level, the experience supports civic pride and honors a sense of place. Downtown Waterfront Alliance believes the tour will fuel valuable word-of-mouth marketing about Gig Harbor. They initiated the tour after being inspired by a Main Street conference session about guided walking tours in other cities. During a 1.3-mile sociable stroll, waterfront walkers find out about the animals that live

30

in and around the harbor; what lies in the dark depths beneath the Narrows Bridge; Gig Harbor’s Hollywood film fame; and the town’s historic figures and resident ghosts. The tour is a new way to enjoy Gig Harbor’s waterfront. It makes for a memorable morning. How do you join a tour? Every Saturday morning at 9:45, participants can meet tour guides at the Maritime Pier, next to Tides Tavern. The walk begins there at 10 a.m., ending at noon on the Bogue Viewing Platform, near Devoted Kiss Cafe in the Finholm District. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. “About 75 people have taken the tours so far, with the mix being roughly half tourists and half residents. Locals tell us they love it and always learn something about their town that they never knew. Even people who have lived here for 40 years are surprised. New people moving in have also commented on what a great way it is to get to know their new neighborhood,” Sherwin says. A pair of guides — a Harbor WildWatch wildlife expert and a Waterfront Alliance guide who is educated in the history and culture of the harbor — lead the group through ten stops. The guides wear microphones and amplifier belts so they are easy to hear. Each participant gets a souvenir button with the tour logo — a bright red, shoe-clad crab, courtesy

of CarrotStick Marketing — and a two-forone entry coupon for the Gig Harbor History Museum. Along the way, Harbor WildWatch guides introduce water creatures to walkers, and plenty of historic photos are passed around so participants can envision the past while standing in the present. “We’ve chosen some obvious stops, like Skansie Park, and some less visited spots. How many people have spent time at Arabella’s Public Pier and the historic Dorotich House? How many know about the salmon hatchery, officially known as the Donkey Creek Remote Site Incubator System, near the Austin Estuary?” asks Sherwin. Walkers may get impromptu perks, too. “On Arabella’s Public Pier one weekend, while everyone was looking at the guide as she pulled critters out of the water, they all missed a bald eagle right up above. We pointed it out afterwards. The guide said it is a sign that the harbor is in good condition because it is supporting big birds like eagles. The harbor habitat is in great shape,” shared Sherwin. The Downtown Waterfront Alliance sees the guided waterfront tour as the potential foundation for a series of tours. Possibilities for future tours include guided sunset strolls, lantern or spooky night walks, and taste-and-sip restaurant tours.

Responding to requests, the Alliance is also taking up the idea of booking private guided waterfront tours for businesses, organizations, school groups, clubs, and special events, such as birthdays and family reunions. Because Gig Harbor is a dog-friendly town, owners are welcome to bring their leashed dogs on the tour, if the dogs are well behaved. When considering bringing a dog, owners should evaluate their pet’s stamina, taking into account that the tour is two hours long.

It shares hidden history and gives visitors a behindthe-scenes view of Gig Harbor.

Walkers usually park at Maritime Pier. As participants amble back to parking, Sherwin recommends visiting the Harbor History Museum, and taking a break to enjoy lunch at one of the many charming restaurants along the waterfront. Walkers can also ride the trolley back through town, boarding at the stop in front of Anthony’s restaurant. The Downtown Waterfront Alliance’s final waterfront walking tour of the summer is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 at 10 am. Depending on community interest and the availability of guides, the tours may continue beyond that date. Want to know more? Follow the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance Facebook page to find out about everything they are doing downtown. IN FOCUS NATURE OF ART

Yearning of the heart and expression of the hand. By Sarah Polyakov. Photos courtesy of Kit Kuhn.

Speech. The written word. The smile of a friend. A loving touch. These are all forms of expression that assist in communicating our internal worlds to those around us. Communication takes many forms, each one varied. However, there is a form of communiqué that has the potential to invoke new worlds born of the imagination. Whether it is a painting, a piece of pottery, or a custom ring, each form of artistic expression communicates via a world of form and imagination. Art is the result of the fusion of heart and hand; it takes shape when the yearning of the heart meets the expression of the hand. The arts provide a vehicle for communication that transcends the mundane world of language. And while art is universally understood, it is also open to interpretation. Art delineates the difference between speaking joyful words and visually communicating the act of the soul taking ecstatic flight. Artistic expression is the dialectal that weaves its way through our imagination while often wordlessly telling an entire story — one image being able to convey the story of an epic tome. It is the formidable difference between showing and telling. Visual arts is a language in which Gig Harbor is well-versed, and while some might first think of paintings as synonymous with art, not often considered is the world of jewelry and the story that a simple, gold ring might tell. The epics contained in a shiny piece worn on the hand hint at a hidden world of sentiment, emotions, one’s personality, passions, and perhaps whispered, sacred promises kept between loved ones.

ABOVE Custom pieces are designed with individual’s special interest in mind.

TOP RIGHT Kuhn puts finishing touches on a custom made necklace.

One of our community members who is well-versed in the significance of jewelry as a form of communication unto itself is Kit Kuhn. Kuhn has been well known in Gig Harbor for many years — he maintained retail space on Harborview Drive for more than two decades. Even though he has retired from retail, he continues to be active within the artist community and has taken a visible role in organizing the annual Open Studio Tour held each September. Kuhn has not put his craft on the back burner since his retirement last year. Now that he has more time, he is expanding his efforts and dedication to create new designs. This September, Kuhn will debut several of his original designs during the Open Studio Tour. His new work carries more than one theme — some are modern and others are classic — all involving different techniques. Community members will be introduced to his new designs personally during the tour and will have the opportunity to provide Kuhn with valuable feedback. Kuhn will always be creating and making jewelry, as it is a part of the man. The craft has become part of his heart and soul. He believes jewelry becomes part

of the wearer since it can be so closely linked to one’s life story. “Jewelry is symbolic and it shows us where we came from. Recently, I worked on a brooch from 1879 that had been made for a wedding — it came in a box custom made for the piece. Sometimes I wish that pieces like these could tell their story. “When you make a piece of custom jewelry or have the opportunity to work with an antique, the piece often reflects a time in someone’s life. A piece serves as an anchor to help them remember, but it also helps them move forward in life. This is especially true in cases where a loved one has died, because a special piece of jewelry can actually help them get through the grief.” Designing and making jewelry has helped Kuhn as much as his unique pieces have helped his customers. He credits his success to the solid art programs that were part of the standard curriculum when he was in school. “I started making jewelry in seventh grade, and it was the art programs in school that steered me toward this career path. In ninth grade I took advantage of an apprenticeship program. Without art in school, I would have never found jewelry making,” Kuhn said. Kuhn also stresses the idea that the creative process is intricately bound to his personal happiness. “The thing about art is that you create something from nothing and it gives you profound joy. If there were no art programs, I would have lacked the creativity I needed to fulfill my desires. I need my artistic side to

make me happy and it was these programs in school that made me who I am today.” Continued arts programs in schools are important and help establish a life-long foundation on which a person may build. The creative process is not simply putting pen to paper or paintbrush to canvas. It is an act that expands the mind and permits a person to free his thinking from limitations. Barb Bourscheidt, Kuhn’s colleague with whom he is working on the Open Studio Tour, concurs. “Every child needs and deserves art programs in their school. As a community, we need to make sure the arts are offered in our schools by voting for funding and working with organizations that offer art in the classroom, as well as on an extra-curricular basis.” Years of research conducted by Eric Jensen, author of “Arts with the Brain in Mind”, concluded that art assists in neurological development and enhances creative thinking. Kuhn agrees. “As someone once told me, everything has a design, even something as simple as the headlight of a car. When a child is working on a creative endeavor, he realizes there is no boundary in the imagination. Art is one of the few things that does not have rules and regulations. There is no limit in terms of what you can to do.”

the actual craft of jewelry making is becoming lost. He would like to put the hand back into the equation since much of today’s jewelry is actually designed on a computer and then made by a machine. Through teaching future generations about the craft, the handiwork of the craftsman will be evident in the unique pieces they create. Art benefits all of us and the creative process of the individual is what makes each of us human. Practicing an art benefits the soul because it makes one grow in creativity and expression. If you would like to see Kuhn and other artists create in their studios, be sure to catch the Open Studio Tour in September. This year, Kuhn will be sharing a studio with Lucy Rau, where he will present his new designs. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the methods through which our community members create and tell a meaningful story through their work.

Kuhn believes all children should have the opportunity to learn new artistic skills. He hopes to teach jewelry making to all ages, from elementary school-age to adults, since

“Art is one of the few things that does not have rules and regulations.”

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

FOR THE HEALTH OF A TREE Maintain trees; protect their surroundings. By Cheryl Feeney. Weeks of below average rainfall and above average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest have caused even the hardiest of our beloved conifers to suffer damage. Stressed trees become more susceptible to root disease and insect infestation. But damage does not necessarily lead to a tree’s mortality. Recognizing signs of weakness early and taking action can prevent a tree from reaching the point of no return. Mike Williams, owner of Williams Tree and Stump Removal LLC, believes in the removal of an entire tree only as a last resort. “Often times, removing diseased or insect-infested branches will protect the health of the tree. Not all trees have to be taken down.”

“Our family is involved in the Kitsap County 4H Equine organization. We participate in 4H shows and have sponsored events at our home for the club.” He established the LLC in 2008. Since then, Williams has worked hard to make the company one of the most highly recommended in the area. “The company prides itself in the professionalism of the employees,” Williams said. “The crew is careful to work quickly without compromising quality and safety.”

As a member of the International Society of Arboriculture, Williams knows proper maintenance is necessary for the health of a tree. “Pruning and limbing of damaged or hazardous branches and roots are a regular part of the business. These tree growths can compromise the surrounding trees and cause major damage to wires, plumbing, building facades, sidewalks and asphalt, and obstruct windows and walkways.”

Each job is carefully planned so there is little to no impact on properties. “Large trees are removed by felling or by chunks, each piece lowered carefully depending on the circumstances,” Williams explained. “All the equipment we use in stump grinding is state-ofthe-art, allowing the crew to complete the work quickly, and at a more affordable cost. Digging out stumps with excavation equipment can be expensive and disruptive. Using a high-quality stump grinder allows for the least amount of impact to the area and, in most cases, will provide a depth after the stump is removed to allow for replanting. The machine is on tracks and will not damage lawns or walkways.”

Williams and his wife, Cindy, moved to Gig Harbor several years ago to raise their family in the small, quiet community. In their free time, the Williams family shares a passion for horses.

Williams offers 24-hour emergency service for the removal of hazardous trees, such as those left behind by the mini-tornado that ripped through parts of the Kitsap Peninsula

on Seahawks Super Bowl Sunday. Fallen trees, branches or stumps left untended can become a breeding ground for carpenter ants, termites, or fungus that pose a threat to surrounding trees or structures. Williams Tree and Stump Removal LLC is bonded and insured and offers a wide variety of tree related services for residences, apartment complexes, condominiums, HOA’s, commercial properties and construction sites. The company provides pruning, stump grinding, view enhancement, and diseased or dead-wood tree removal. Williams is a BBB member and licensed Contractor for Tree Removal Services. The community is important to Williams, and he has the recipe for success. “We believe that our business will succeed if we keep business integrity and customer service as our highest priorities. We want to serve our community by offering affordable prices, meeting our commitments and being professional in every aspect of our work.”

For Christie Kaldestad, sports is a year round commitment. Entering her senior year at Gig Harbor High School, Christie has played soccer the last three years and will serve as captain of her team this year. She has also earned her varsity letter in track all three years. And while she has certainly been successful, there have been challenges along the way. A soccer injury at the end of her sophomore year kept Christie sidelined for five to six months. “I fell and landed on my knee, and a piece of cartilage broke out from under my knee cap,” shared Christie about her injury that required surgery. “I put in a lot of work to get back to full strength.” She enjoys soccer and the bond she has created with her teammates. “I also love the competition and being able to go out and give it my all with my team,” said Christie.

Christie looks forward to the future and said she has learned an important lesson through athletics. “It is important to give it your all — not only to better yourself, but it makes you a team player. It is very important to be a hard worker not only in sports, but life in general.”

Dominic said one of the biggest challenges he faced in sports was when he injured his hip flexor. “It came about mid-season, and I had to take a month off after state to recover,” said Dominic. “But it helped me to become more creative with my training when I had to come up with alternative workouts, and it helped me to appreciate running all the more.” When asked what he loves most about running, it was hard for him to choose one thing. “I love every aspect of my sport. The tough workouts, the big races, the team bonding, all of it. I would have to say that I most love the lifestyle that running promotes.”

SUMMER FINALE

From Mozart to Of Monsters and Men. By Melissa Murdock.

The Northwest has the most beautiful summers. And the best summer music festivals. This is the time of year where families and friends have quality time together to relax and recharge. Kids are out of school. College students are home for the summer. Friends reunite. What better way to celebrate the final weeks of the season than to enjoy great music alongside your friends and family? Music festivals are popular here in the northwest as the warm sunshine, coupled with the cool evening breeze, makes the perfect weather to enjoy some awesome music. The Gorge Amphitheatre is especially commended for its spectacular views of the Columbia River Gorge, and also for having the most incredible music lineups in the region. The setting sun lights up the gorge in hot pinks, oranges, yellows, and purples — a fine complement to the lights and sounds of the natural, outdoor stage. To add to the outdoor experience, the Gorge provides access to campgrounds for fans (concert ticket required). The final big festival of the summer just ended with Watershed, but concerts continue through mid-September. Sam Smith, Dave Matthews, and Foo Fighters are all scheduled before the season ends. Near Quincy, WA. For more information: www.gorgeamphitheatre.net. Summer sunsets and music are not just for The Gorge. As summer begins to come to a close, music festival opportunities are still in full swing. Here are some of the region’s favorite concert locations that offer genres that appeal to the musical tastes of just about everyone. These are the hottest festivals this summer and are not to be missed.

DID YOU KNOW? Nearly one in four weddings are destination weddings. 70 Percent of destination weddings take place within the United States. The top five destination wedding locations are: 1. Las Vegas - 125,000 per year 2. Hawaii - 20,000 per year 3. U.S. Virgin Islands - 5,100 per year 4. Jamaica - 5,000 per year 5. Bahamas - 4,000 per year Annually, $16 billion is spent on destination weddings. 60 Percent of couples doing destination weddings will pay for the wedding themselves. On average, 48 guests will attend a destination wedding. It will cost, on average, $673 to attend a destination wedding as a guest.

etting married on the tropical beaches of Maui always seemed like a dream, but nothing more. Even before I had visited the island, I knew it was where I wanted to get married regardless of how unrealistic I thought it was. It wasn’t until my feet touched the warm salt water and the softest sand pressed between my toes that I realized it was actually happening − a dream come true! Getting married in a tropical atmosphere has the ability to be far more personal and meaningful to the couple. These days, the wedding chaos can pull the couple away from the true significance of their marriage and it turns into a fiasco. Thousands of dollars are spent for a single day, and it can easily get overwhelming. Having the peace and serenity of a small beach wedding is everything a bride could ask for and more.

90 percent of couples choose to do a destination wedding because of weather.

There are tropical places all over the world that have become famous for romantic beach weddings. Although there are people who travel to far off places, including New Zealand and Europe, there are tropical places that are becoming increasingly popular and not out of the way for traveling accommodations. Here are some of the most popular (and reasonable) destination wedding locations of 2015. Hawaii - There are several islands to choose from, but three stand out the most: Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. With the weather only changing about 10 degrees all year long, there are options to have an outdoor wedding summer, fall, winter and spring. Another benefit of Hawaii is that you get the tropical feel without having to travel out of the country. If you intend on inviting guests to the destination wedding, you’ll likely have a larger list than traveling outside of the United States. Maui, the romantic island, is excellent for the close-knit and romantic feel wanted

Top five wedding months 1. June 2. August 3. May 4. July 5. September The average age of a destination bride is 33, which is slightly higher than non-destination weddings.

married aboard a boat of your choosing, sharing your vows with some local dolphins, or even getting married underwater. Each Key has something different to offer in wedding options. The best time to travel and hold your wedding here is also April or May.

The Bahamas - The Bahamas is a collection of over 700 islands and offers a variety of options for destination weddings. With the huge collection of islands, the newlyweds can even rent their own private island for the perfect honeymoon. There are specific islands for every taste: Some are more lively filled with nightlife, and others more serene and peaceful.

Los Cabos, Mexico - In a beautiful paradise filled with white sandy beaches, who wouldn’t want to get married here? Cabo San Lucas is part of this area and offers a bit of lively nature to the relaxing beach wedding. It makes for an awesome after-party or wedding celebration to continue into the night. There are private boat rides for the couple to visit where they can share their vows or they can enter the wedding on horses. If that is not enough, in the right season, the releasing of baby sea turtles into the ocean can be incorporated into your ceremony. Los Cabos offers some of the most unique options for weddings. If you are looking to do something new and innovative, check out the Los Cabos area. The best time to get married here is mid-December though the end of March.

Regardless of what you want, the Bahamas can offer it. If you are looking into the Bahamas, check out some of the specific options each island has to offer first before booking. Once you pick what kind of ceremony you want, then you can find the island of best fit. One of the best parts is that the plane ride from Florida is just over a half-hour. Skip the fiveto six-hour plane ride to Hawaii and opt for a shorter overseas plane ride. For a less crowded time of year without the risk of a hurricane, visit during April or May. The Florida Keys - If you are in search of the Caribbean feel at a more affordable price, the Florida Keys are the perfect chain of islands for you. There is an old-Florida feel about the islands with nature, white beaches and blue water all around you. Some of the popular options available in the Keys include getting

Celebrating your 10th, 25th or even 50th wedding anniversaries become personalized and special since you can revisit your wedding beach in paradise. Planning tips 1. Go with a wedding package. Weddings are important landmarks in the years to come with a promise of forever. for under $200, and this was inclusive of the basics you would need: minister, beach permits, and photography and marriage certificates. If you are looking for packages for larger parties inclusive of cakes, seating, videography and hundreds of photos, they are easily available as well. Set a baseline of what you need at your ceremony, and call your planner to find out what is possible. 2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Keeping things affordable Getting married in paradise is surprisingly affordable. When you are not worried about feeding and catering for hundreds of people, the stress dissipates. Personalize it to your taste and communicate with your planner to ensure you are getting what you need and nothing more. Recognizing guests who cannot attend My husband and I decided to get married on the island of Maui for sentimental reasons, and we are not alone. Many couples have cherished memories at these tropical islands or even have met in that same beach spot. Regardless of why, it is important to cherish the couple’s wishes and signify this in a wedding ceremony. For us, we got married in Maui because of my dad. Three years ago, my dad and I made a promise that we were going to go to Hawaii for the first time. The entire family had never been, and it was about time for a family vacation. Weeks later, I lost my dad suddenly. Living up to my end of the promise, a few months later, we took his ashes to the island of Maui so he could rest in paradise forever. on the island so that my father could still give me away on my wedding day. Weddings are important landmarks in the years to come with a promise of forever. Not always is there a loss in family members, but sometimes the inconvenience of travel won’t allow for everyone to make it. If this is the case, don’t completely rule out a destination wedding. There are many options for overcoming this and ways to recognize family who can’t make it. Webcams can bring family together from all over the world. Bring your laptop, and you can easily set up streaming video from your ceremony to those at home so that they can share the day with you. Also, depending on the location, there are options to honor them being there in spirit. You can print canvas photos of missing members, and have a picture of them there at the ceremony. You can also take some island influence to recognize them. Since Hawaii is one of the most popular places, you can use leis and have them placed on the beach around the photos, or lay them out in place of where they would

stand for the ceremony. Each different wedding destination will have a unique influence that can be incorporated into the ceremony. When planning your wedding, check with your planner or minister about ideas to fill in the gaps. Destination weddings are not unrealistic! Don’t be afraid to do some research, and check out your options. A lot of couples I have spoken to assume that it isn’t possible and give up on the idea of getting married in paradise. Don’t let this be a factor in your decision. Especially with the increase in couples tackling wedding planning and funding on their own, it is important that you are paying for something you can be proud of. Take a chance, and you can have the wedding of your dreams as truly an island princess. With the affordability, convenience and luxury of a wedding in paradise, throw away the fear, and say “I do” to your dream destination wedding.

Saving Lives FUNDRAISER WILL GO TOWARDS PURCHASE OF NEW DEFIBRILLATORS. BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

It can mean the difference between life and death. We have all seen them on television and hopefully few of us have had to experience them. A defibrillator — an electronic device that administers an electric shock to the heart to aid in reestablishing normal contraction rhythms in a heart having dangerous arrhythmia or that is in cardiac arrest. In recent years small portable defibrillators have started to appear in communities for the public to use in case of a cardiac emergency. And for those emergency first responders who are at the front lines every day, it is imperative they have the best equipment available; especially given the fact that sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming 250,000 to 450,000 lives each year.

On September 5, you can help make a difference for our local fire department and, ultimately, your friends and neighbors. The first annual Benefit Concert By the Sea will provide entertainment by Pugetbrass, a British brass band comprised of over 20 performers who will entertain the crowd from 4 to 6pm with big band, jazz and marches. MEET THE CREATURES WHO SHARE OUR BEACHES by Patty Hutchens

Why not end your summer with a fun family event right here in Gig Harbor? The Get Your Feet Wet Program put on by Harbor WildWatch is a great way to introduce both children and adults to the creatures that live near and on our shores here in Puget Sound.

Family

FEATURE

The adventure is led by both trained volunteers and experienced environmentalists who are full of fun and interesting information about the creatures and plants. Those who take part in this interactive program will have a unique opportunity to experience the algae and marine invertebrates through sight and touch, thanks to touch-tanks and guided beach walks. The end result for those participating is an increased awareness and respect for those creatures that share our home, with the ultimate goal of promoting stewardship for all our natural resources. Harbor WildWatch hosts these programs at the local beaches on most low-tide days from now through August. You can also see their volunteers at local parks, docs and community events. How do you spot one of the Harbor WildWatch volunteers? Look for a blue canopy on the beach and the naturalists are dressed in blue shirts and hats.

POTATO CHIP COOKIES from “Jail House Cuisine” by Louise Mathews These are delicate, lacey cookies that are irresistible. People ask if there are white chocolate or macadamia nuts in them; they rarely guess it is potato chips. This recipe can be doubled. Servings: Three dozen • ½ pound (2 sticks) margarine • ¾ cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 ¾ cups flour • ¾ cup potato chips, crushed Pre-heat oven to 350 F. In an electric mixer, cream together the margarine, sugar and vanilla. Blend in the flour and work in the crushed potato chips (dough will be firm). Drop by teaspoons full onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 12 to 14 minutes until light brown. Watch the cookies very closely as they tend to burn.

e tell stories every day – it’s how we communicate what we did with a friend or pass on our family stories from generations past. Stories unite and bind us together, and they are limitless.

behind the food.

The stories by these new authors couldn’t be more different – there is the retired prison cook who revolutionized prison food, the teenage fantasy writer and the twentysomething writer reflecting on the comingof-age stories. But as different as their stories are, they share the bond of the writing life – where inspiration is everywhere, and they can’t get their stories out fast enough.

“I went to school to teach English and write books, but then I fell in love with a military guy and kept working in food service. I did hotels, schools and hospitals – I even owned my own restaurant. Everything I did got me ready to go to jail for 20 years,” Mathews said.

Memoirs of a Jail Food Service Director Louise Mathews, author of “Jail House Cuisine - From the Right Side of the Bars,” has published a culinary memoir and cookbook. In it, she not only lists the recipes she and her colleagues served inmates but also the stories

LIVINGLOCAL

Mathews had always planned on being a writer. What she didn’t plan on was making a career in the food service industry and spending most of that time providing meals for inmates.

She and her husband, a Navy veteran, traveled the country for his job, and she always got a job in the food service industry. Many of her jobs were male-dominated, but Mathews never feared. “I broke all kinds of glass ceilings.” Just like a twist of fate in a story, a simple newspaper want ad altered Mathews’ career. The ad was for chief of food service at the San Diego County Sheriff ’s Department.

“I saw my first jail kitchen, and it was awful, but I figured I could only make it better,” she laughed. The things that happened on her first day were something out of a movie. For starters, no one would talk to her. She was also not versed in the nuances of feeding inmates. When she asked why they didn’t distribute non-dairy creamers, she was bluntly told that inmates could make a pipe bomb with it. And when she went to leave, there were inmates in the kitchen being stripsearched! “I contacted the watch commander – he was laughing hysterically– and told him it was a health code violation,” she said. “Two years later, I told him I made the whole thing up. I just gave him something he could relate to.” Her first kitchen crew was a group of inmates who were awoken at 2 a.m. to help. “They were like junior high schoolers but worse. I did as much as I could, but the problem was the inmates,” she said. Then she found her solution – she’d change the way they prepared the food. She proposed and had a production kitchen built that prepares food using cook-chill technology, where food is cooked, chilled and packaged for reheating elsewhere. She also created world-class recipes which inadvertently kept the peace in the jails. “If they don’t like the food, they’ll riot,” she said.

In the book, Mathews includes family recipes created by her father, an Italian chef, such as his tomato gravy. “It’s good quality, done right and good,” she said. She also collected recipes from colleagues all over North America, England and Belgium. The recipes give a taste for the region since jail food varies according to location. “In Arizona, they serve ‘Menudo,’ which is tripe stew and a good hangover remedy,” she said. They also serve Indian flat bread made from a recipe from the Trail of Tears. In her book, you’ll also find anything from Canadian tea cakes to Aunt Jack’s Awesome Brownies from Alabama. Mathews has won numerous awards for her work. Among them, the prestigious International Diamond Award for the best correctional food; and the Silver Plate which is an award akin to winning an Oscar in her career. She retired in 2007 after 21 years cooking in jails for a total of 43 years in the food service industry. The book took time because she had to collect the recipes, test and refine them, plus include her memoir. “I had the idea for the book all along,” she said. “This is what I’ve always wanted to do.” Mathews is at work on a novel about a Native American character and reincarnation. You can find “Jail House Cuisine” on Amazon and some of the recipes on Facebook.

Dreaming up Worlds For Bonnie Gwyn Johnson, a conversation at age six with one of her older sisters sparked a passion for telling and writing stories. Now, at just age 17, the teen has two published books under her belt and two more in development – let alone the ones knocking around in her head! “(My sister and I) were on our way to the movies, and we started talking. Whenever we were together, we’d work on this story. I dictated and she typed because I was little,” Bonnie explained. But it wasn’t until a few years later that a story gripped her imagination in a fierce way. Playing with a friend and a box of dress

She proposed and had a production kitchen built that prepares food using cook-chill technology, where food is cooked, chilled and packaged for reheating elsewhere. She also created worldclass recipes which inadvertently kept the peace in the jails.

You start with the ending because that way you know what the resolution is. With a light that illuminated the constellations on her bedroom, they talked about where the characters lived in a planet not unlike Earth but light years away. She calls it “Elldamorae,” and has generations of brave characters who must lead their tribes to rebuild lost kingdoms. “We’d map out where the characters lived; we made up games of fairies and dragons, and those became the plot. The ideas sat around in my head for years, and I started writing them down,” she said. She was just 10 years old then. With a determination not seen in people years beyond her age, she has written and rewritten her “Elldamorae” novels. Being homeschooled has allotted her the luxury of time. It also became her education as she researched writing techniques and studied history for inspiration. She also annually attends the “Life, the Universe, and Everything” writing conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, for which she credits learning much of the craft. It was

66

there that she learned about a “seven-point plot process.” “You start with the ending because that way you know what the resolution is. Then you write the beginning, and you map out the scenes and figure out how it works,” she explained. She has also immersed herself in the online writing community. She started her blog, bonniegwyn.blogspot.com and is an administrator of the Author’s Think Tank, a national writing community, where she writes and manages posts from fellow members. Lastly, she participates in an online chat room where writers “sprint.” “We set a timer and a goal and write as many words as possible without editing. That’s where I first started disciplining myself, and it has

helped my writing,” she said. Ironically, it was one of those writing communities – the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) – that inspired her to write two novels completely different

from her childhood ideas. Every November, NaNoWriMo, encourages its members to write a novel in one month. The month-long exercise is meant to show writers they can write a novel using a set plan plus a little determination and late nights. Two years ago, Bonnie was going to use NaNoWriMo to write one of her books. Instead, she had a vivid dream of a dystopia where people voluntarily kept themselves captive as a way to remain “safe.” Thus, the idea for her two latest published books, “Escaping Safety” and “Surviving Darkness” were born. Bonnie wrote and finished “Escaping Safety” in one month followed by revisions and suggestions by her mother, who is a professional editor. The second took just a few months as well. Whether it’s online, on her laptop or in her journal, Bonnie writes every day. “Writing is my sanity. When I’m not writing, I’m depressed. I just have a passion for stories,” she said. She is currently working on “Living Fire,” the final segment to her dystopian fantasy series. Look for her books online at Amazon or Greatfamilybooks.com. Capturing the Human Experience Just like Mathews and Bonnie, Stephanie Vichinsky, always knew that she wanted to write. After several high school teachers encouraged her, Vichinsky decided that writing was something she was good at. “I took every writing class at North Idaho College and Eastern Washington University,” the Post Falls, Idaho resident said. At EWU, she

68

focused on non-fiction writing and research. Vichinsky, who is in her twenties, worked on her writing, posting it on various online communities when she discovered “Writers World” on Facebook. There, she was contacted by a former editor at Disney, who is now an independent publisher and editor of several author anthologies. “He and other writers were impressed with the emotions I expressed in my writing, and he took me under his wing in teaching me the finer point of essay writing. He put a label on things I didn’t know about, I learned more from him in six months than at school,” she said. That editor, Randall Matthews, taught her about “emoting,” which is how to tap into a reader’s emotions through the writing. He also taught her how to properly pace and avoid writing pitfalls such as passive construction. “It was relentless. You think you’re good but then I realized I just knew the basics,” Vichinsky said of the editor’s guidance. “You can never say that you’re done writing.” Inspiration is the easy part – observing people, their mannerisms and how we are alike or not are the kernels of ideas that lead to her stories and essays. Writing and doing it well “is as hard as rocket science. Building the scenes … it’s complicated. You need to study … You keep going because you can always get better,” she said. Vichinsky works on her writing daily in addition to a job and taking care of her young

LIVINGLOCAL

family. A lover of animals, she works at two different pet resorts. “I try to write 1000 words per day, but I have a job and a family. Doing any kind of writing daily is helpful. It’s like calisthenics,” she said. The editor asked Vichinsky and three other authors to submit essays on life – the good, the bad and the in between – for the anthology, “Four Feet Under.” She focused on comingof-age essays to which readers could relate, regardless of their age. Working on her essays for the book was an exercise in pacing itself. The editor gave her 60 days to write 25 essays, but in total, the anthology took one year to complete and publish. Her stories recall happy childhood memories and bittersweet ones about growing up and being a young adult. The essay, “Flying,” recalls the childhood memory of reckless bike riding and the first feeling of flying that was inevitably lost once the neighborhood kids grew up and moved away. “Sherman Avenue” evokes the moment the narrator realizes that the relationship she thought she had with her sister never existed. “I tried to capture the universality of human nature – choosing certain moments where the emotion was relative. That’s really what (the book) was about,” she said. You can find “Four Feet Under” on Amazon, jacolpublishing.com and on Facebook at JaCol Publishing’s page and also her personal one. Currently, she is working on “Gospel,” a science fiction novel that is a reflection about how society shapes the way the characters live.

Picnicking in Style NEW TRENDS TO TRY WHILE HIKING AND PICNICKING THIS SUMMER.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

Each summer we have so many opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy hikes and picnics with friends and loved ones. But the question is, how do we do it in style? Fortunately, the fabrics used for today’s outdoor clothing provide the best of both worlds. Today’s athletic retailers offer skirts, skorts and shorts made to reflect the most current styles. However, unlike their department store counterparts, these pieces wash and dry easily while wicking away rain and resisting humidity. Today’s outdoor pants are shaped for hiking, comfortable enough to wear all day, and usually contain cleverly hidden zippered pockets for cellphones and other small items. Many hiking pants also offer the option to zip the pant legs off below the knee so that you have impromptu walking shorts when hot weather hits. But the best part about many outdoor pants is that some of them can double as your favorite pair of khakis and be worn to the office, all the while remaining comfortable and on-trend. Getting outdoors is important for the body and soul, but being mindful of the sun and its effect on health is even more important. While it’s great to cover ourselves in sunscreen, we often need more. The best feature of this year’s outdoor wear includes something very important — built in sun protection. Many active wear companies have taken note of the recent uptick in melanoma and have responded accordingly. It’s easy to find swimsuits, rash

70

LIVINGLOCAL

guards, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and even pants that include built-in sun protection equivalent to SPF 50. While you’re out, don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch. Dutch designer Jeriel Bobbe recently designed my favorite picnic basket of all time since it does more than carry lunch. Bobbe often lamented the fact that there were very few comfortable benches in the parks near his home, so he rose to the challenge. When folded, Bobbe’s basket looks like any other since it offers compartments to keep food, plates and cutlery. But if you take a few seconds to fold it out, this picnic basket transforms into an elegant table for two with two cushioned seats attached. It has even been designed to hook easily on the back of a bicycle. Embrace the outdoors and do it in style. But while you are out and about, don’t forget accessories such as a BPA-free water bottle, sunscreen, a geo-caching device and a selfie stick to show your friends that you actually did reach a mountain’s summit.

Tips to Keep You Healthy

The Most Important Thing OUR MOST BASIC HUMAN PROCESS IS USUALLY THE ONE THAT IS MOST OVERLOOKED.

BY SUSAN MOORE.

76

Every day the most important concept I teach is how to breathe. By the time someone comes into my gym it is usually not because they feel great and want to continue on that path; it’s because they are unhappy in one or more ways with the current status quo of their life. They don’t like the way they look, feel, behave, move, or any number of issues, whether real or imaginary. Stress, work, life have somehow gotten in their way of the quality of life they are seeking and now I have the pleasure of guiding them to a better place. I get to see the initial change for the better they find on day one and all I do is (re)teach them how to…breathe. I have the best job on the planet.

the breathing spectrum. We have on one side clavicular or shallow breathing and on the other side we have diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing. The easiest way to tell is when you breathe in do your chest or shoulders rise while your stomach draws into your body; or does your stomach expand with your inhale and draw in when you exhale with your shoulders remaining relaxed? If you typically practice the latter, you are in luck — your breathing is great and keep up the good work. You probably breathe purposefully and maybe even spend some well-deserved time meditating. On the other hand, if you can’t seem to figure out how to keep your shoulders from rising upon inhale you may have some work to do.

Well, first let’s talk about the opposite ends of

So why should you care how deeply

Affecting Your Daily Life? Snoring isn’t sexy! Stop it! Have you been told you snore? Snoring isn’t normal. It affects your partner’s sleep as well as yours. Also, snoring can be a symptom of a more serious condition called sleep apnea.

you breathe? Clavicular breathing draws only minimal oxygen into the lungs and can lead to a build-up of carbon dioxide. Many breathing and stress issues are exacerbated by this type of breathing. The diaphragm is closely connected to your sympathetic nervous system, which controls our fight or flight response. The more we shallow breathe the more anxious and unsettled we become and this takes a toll on our ability to adapt to stress and remain healthy. The longer we are in this state of habitual shallow breathing, the harder it becomes to breathe deep. All it takes is some daily practice to combat and reverse this cycle. Diaphragmatic breathing is one our strongest self-healing mechanisms. It draws oxygen lower into the lungs which activates the parasympathetic nervous system (relax and recover). According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of deep breathing include, but are not limited to: relieve physical muscle tension; increase oxygen to all cells; strengthen the lungs; slow our heart rate; lower blood pressure; increase blood flow to muscles; and improve concentration. Taking time to breathe deeply and purposefully can easily be done within your daily life. It doesn’t have to be done on its own. We can easily practice while driving (reducing road rage), brushing our teeth, bathing, before sleep or anytime talking is not necessary. Everyone has time to practice breathing. I can’t personally think of a downside.

Now the how. If you have been shallow breathing for long enough, regaining the ability to breathe deep will not be as automatic as you may think. When you have a few minutes, try lying on your back with one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach. Breathe in what you currently consider deep and see which of your hands moves the most. Now try and exhale at least a little bit deeper than you inhaled. Keep that up, trying each time to fill the belly with air while inhaling and contracting your abdominal muscles. While exhaling, remember to exhale a little more than you inhaled. This may prove to be difficult at first but keep practicing. Eventually, you should be able to relax your chest and breathe from the belly. Once it becomes easier, then you can spend more practice time during your showers and car rides. You may decide to set aside some ‘me’ time and just breathe. This is when life begins to get better.

Sleep and Your Health CAN TREATING YOUR SLEEP ISSUES DECREASE YOUR DENTAL BUDGET? BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS. As a dentist, I realized that I needed a sleep study, because I snored. I could have made myself a snore appliance, but I knew that would not be the right thing to do. I needed a diagnosis, provided by a Board Certified Sleep Physician. To my surprise, I suffered from mild sleep apnea. I felt like I slept well, but snoring disrupts sleep, much less, the sleep of my husband! I have learned, in my extensive studies, that sleep not only allows your body to recharge, but also allows your brain to help stabilize your memories through its effects on brain plasticity. Without adequate sleep, short term memory is compromised. If you sleep poorly, you can experience stomach issues, blood pressure fluctuation, blood sugar stability issues and many more health problems. As a dentist for over twenty-three years, I see patients who snore, or who have sleep apnea, suffer from periodontal (gum and bone) disease in their mouth. They also tend to get more cavities, due to their dry mouth. Clenching and grinding may also be related to a need for more oxygen. Our goal is to save you money, if we can prevent health related issues from causing a need for dental treatment. Lastly, there are many dental issues that can increase your risk of sleep apnea! As an example, what is the shape of your mouth and

airway? Not to disclose too many personal secrets: my pug snores. Pugs, as a dog breed, have a short nose, limited airway and a huge tendency to snore, which increases with age and weight. There are some variables we can discuss which could decrease your risk of life changing illnesses. What symptoms, besides snoring, could indicate that you may have sleep apnea? • Restless leg syndrome • Dry mouth • Daytime tiredness • Gasping while sleeping, or waking up with a racing heart • Stomach issues • High blood pressure • Difficulty focusing during the day • Memory issues Depending on your status, CPAP or an oral appliance can boost your memory, cognition and decrease your likelihood of developing dementia. You’ll also be healthier dentally! Call your dentist for an assessment. You (and your partner) deserve better quality of sleep.

Whiplash AN INJURY THAT CAN HAPPEN EVEN IF THE CAR IS ONLY MOVING AT 5 MILES PER HOUR. BY SUSAN HOFFMAN. It is alarming to realize that two out of every five driving-aged people will experience a car accident each year. Out of six million injuries due to car accidents, three million are whiplash related injuries. Whiplash is a non-medical term first used in 1928, and was called “railway spine” before then to describe injuries that occurred in train accidents. A whiplash describes a range of injuries to the neck caused by or related to a sudden distortion of the neck. “Cervical acceleration-deceleration describes the mechanism of the injury while the term whiplash associated disorder describes the injury sequelae and symptoms.” — medicine. net.com Fortunately, the experience of a whiplash is not usually life threatening, but it should not be ignored. Seeking medical evaluation is important and the chiropractic approach using specific adjustments will restore proper motion and normal spinal function. Too many people ignore the symptoms, and suffer from constant headaches and depend on addictive pain medications, or even submit to needless surgery. When the head is suddenly jerked either forward or back, back and forward, or side to side, the muscles, ligaments and other soft tissue supporting the spine and head can be overstretched, irritated or torn. According to Dr. Joshua Gale, “The resulting instability of the spine and soft tissues can result in headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, pain in the shoulder, arms, and hands, reduced ability to turn and bend, and even low back problems.” Other symptoms include neck pain, numbness in arms and fingers, pain in jaw or face, nausea, ringing in the ears,

difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, and difficulty in swallowing. Whiplash most commonly happens while riding in a car, but it can also occur with contact sports and shaking baby syndrome. Like with most medical issues, the sooner treatment is pursued the quicker the recovery in order to avoid a chronic condition that can lead to a disability. The type of car you drive may put you at greater risk. When purchasing a car, it is important to consider the size and weight of the vehicle as well as the restraint systems including seatbelts, airbags, and head restraints. Surprisingly, research has shown that no head restraint is safer than one in the low position. Usually one does not have time to foresee the impact in a car crash, but there are a few things you can do to help protect yourself. • Put your head and neck all the way back so that you are in contact with the head restraint or seat back. Wear a seatbelt at all times while in a car. • Have a good grip on the steering wheel, with arms straight. • Look straight ahead so your neck is not turned. • Push your shoulders up toward your ears and brace yourself. • If you do experience an injury, contact your chiropractor for an evaluation. It is important to begin treatment immediately, and in addition to contacting your chiropractor, you can begin at home with RICE therapy: rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

Ready-Set-Go…Back to School STAY HEALTHY. STAY IN SCHOOL. BY GLORIA GILBÉRE, CDP, DA HOM, PHD, DSC, ECOERGONOMIST, WHOLISTIC REJUVENIST, HTMA PRACTITIONER. Two Weeks BEFORE School Starts As parents and consumers, we’re never ready for the onslaught of illnesses that occur after classes start in late August or early September. That said, you cannot afford to wait until then to protect your health and that of your family. Generally six to eight weeks after classes begin, illnesses manifest: strep throat, colds, influenza, sinus infections and ear aches. The following proactive natural health measures are simple yet effective: • Probiotics are essential for intestinal health. Most of our immune system is based in our gut! Probiotics help compensate for fast food, dehydration and general stress. For maximum effectiveness, rotate brands and potencies. It’s recommended that children under age 12 be administered at least 2 billion and adults with 60 billion organisms per serving, rotating up to about 100 billion. • Daily adequate bowel elimination is vital. Increase natural fiber from raw vegetables and fruits. Make green smoothies with fruit and a whey protein for immune-enhancement and increased energy and stamina. If you are sensitive to dairy, use a protein powder from organic brown rice with milk alternatives (almond, hemp, coconut or flax milk), and add seeds like Camelina, flax, chia, etc. for added fiber and nutritional value. General Considerations • AVOID sugar – It suppresses immunity. Eight tablespoons (equal to two cans of soda) reduces the ability of white blood cells to kill germs by 40 percent! The effects begin 20 to 30 minutes AFTER ingestion and last up to eight hours. Use natural sweeteners like Stevia, Lo Han and Xylitol instead.

bottle to avoid dangerous chemicals from plastic. Did you know – When you sip from a “fat” straw, your body craves more and you consume twice as much with half the effort? • Hand sanitation – I don’t advocate using anti-bacterial soaps or wipes because they have the same adverse effect long-term as antibiotics – creating drug resistance, dry skin, macro (large) pores and making us more susceptible to infection. I prefer a fragrancefree alcohol or any other natural antibacterial like a professional silver hydrosol (not typical colloidal silver). The best prevention is frequent handwashing. Silver hydrosol is also available as a nasal spray for protection when exposed to viruses any place. • If your child appears “off,” check his or her urine pH after their first pee of the morning. If the urine is acidic, it usually indicates that the child’s immune system is “fighting” a virus or infection. You can quickly alkalize short-term with 1 teaspoon of baking soda in whatever food or liquid you can hide it if they don’t like the taste and/or sweeten with a natural sweetener. Their first urine of the morning should have a pH between 6.5 to 7.2. Bacteria and viruses cannot thrive and multiply in an alkaline environment. Stay Heart Healthy KEY INGREDIENTS TO A HEALTHY HEART THIS SUMMER.

With the warm weather that summer brings, our schedules become packed with summer sports and activities. It’s a time when it can be easy to let your heart healthy diet slide to the bottom of the priority list. With a dash of planning and a spoonful of creativity, summer meals can taste as good as they are nutritious and give you the fuel you need to take advantage of the wonderful weather. Here are some tips for keeping your meals and snacks heart healthy in the summer months: Go Lean with Protein Being on-the-go doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice muscle-building protein in the summer. For dinner options, choose lean meats, poultry or fish. Select lean proteins for refreshing and easy-to-make sandwiches. And if you don’t want all that bread, try using Sandwich Thins or a a low-carb wrap instead. Become a Fruit Fanatic Summer is the season for fresh fruits that are chock full of vitamins, minerals and fiber. They make a great substitute for traditional desserts that are high in fat and calories. Wash and slice any combination of juicy melons, berries, or other fruits and add them to your favorite yogurt or sorbet and blend for a cooling and healthy treat. Larger fruits such as peaches or

pineapple also pair nicely with grilled items. Streamline Salads Salads are also a go-to for the summer months but accompanying oily dressing and cheese can load them down with fat and calories. Choose low-fat or light dressing options and steer clear from cream-based diet spoilers. Minimize added sodium and fat by sprinkling low-fat varieties such as Swiss, Mozzarella, Parmesan or cottage cheese. With these guidelines in mind, your summer meals will be every bit as heart healthy as they are tasty!

Salads are also a go-to for the summer months.

1. Place the jalapeno in the center of a piece of cheesecloth about 4” long and 4”wide. Wrap the cheesecloth around the jalapeno creating an herb satchel and tie closed with kitchen string. A coffee filter will work just as well for this task. 2. Place the tea bags and herb satchel in a pitcher. Pour in the boiling water. Allow tea bags to steep 3-5 minutes before removing. Do not squeeze liquids from the tea bags, this will result in bitter tea. Taste the tea every 15 minutes or so to check intensity of the jalapeno. I like mine spicy so I left it in until ready to serve, you may want just a hint of jalapeno which will take a mere 15 minutes. Stir in pineapple juice and agave nectar. 3. Place in refrigerator until cool. 4. To serve pour the tea into an ice filled glass. Garnish the glass with pineapple chunks and jalapeno slices.

DESTINATIONNORTHWEST

RUNNING THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

For the expert and the novice By Megan Olson Since 1990, the United States has experienced a steady growth in road race participation with over 19 million annual finishers. Whether a seasoned veteran or a novice runner, the Pacific Northwest (PNW) extends more unparalleled running opportunity than any other demographic in the United States. No other region possesses such variety, challenge and beauty in its running courses than the majestic PNW. It’s difficult to ascertain a specific solitary answer as of why people run. Running’s archaic and rudimentary nature allows it to be touted as one of the oldest sports known to humanity. Getting started as a runner is modest in

contrast to other popular sporting endeavors; its basic requirements consist of comfortable attire, shoes and a little fortitude. For most, running offers vast health benefits, relief from emotional stress and most importantly, a sense of accomplishment. The PNW is unsurpassed in the variety of its races. Whether it’s a trail run, a 5K, an ultramarathon, or anything in between, the PNW boasts them all. Oregon and Washington are at the head of the pack when it comes to road race variety. Not only do both states host thousands of races, many are distinctive and incomparable.

Oregon holds one of the most unique and essential 5K experiences. Each summer, Nike World Headquarters opens their esteemed facility for the Bowerman 5K in Beaverton. The distinctness of this race truly exemplifies the heart of running in Oregon as it is named after the legendary coach and Nike co-founder, Bill Bowerman. Runners are provided internal access to the facility as well as opportunity to meet elite and professional athletes. Since its inception, the generated profit has been utilized to support the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund. The premise of the mission is to provide opportunity, education and a better quality of life for children living in Uganda.

If seeking the road race with the most competitors, the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Washington is certainly exemplary. This high energy Goliath of a race is held the first Sunday in May and is notoriously esteemed for its average size of 50,000 runners and the intensity of its dreaded “Doomsday Hill.” The 12K race is the third largest in the nation, only after the Atlanta Peachtree Road Race and the New York City Marathon. Its popularity came early as it was drafted by Don Kardong, a local runner and Olympic marathon athlete. It started in 1976 with a little more than 1,000 runners and grew to 61,298 by 1996. This race has become a favorite and draws in the top athletes in the world. The greater the adversity, the more fulfilling the triumph; difficult races always propagate that deeper sense of accomplishment. It’s the reminiscences of the cruel strenuous races that

remain the most noteworthy in the minds of runners. You feel indestructible, as though you’ve conquered the unconquerable. It becomes an all-out battle as the mind forces the body to defeat the road. There is something gratifying for the soul as it overpowers the beast. Sometimes, the run feels so intolerably brutal; blackened toenails, fatigued muscles, extreme conditions, dehydration and unsuitable attire are all nuisances that impede the run. Some of the most grueling, yet satisfying races in existence, can be found in British Columbia and Montana. Each summer, trail runners make their way up the 1.8-mile Grouse Grind in Vancouver, British Columbia. It has been coined as “Mother Nature’s Stair Master” as it consists of more than 2,800 natural stairs. Its steepness

offers such intensity that its fastest official time is a humble 25:01 minutes, while the average time for the annual 150,000 trail runners and hikers is nearly two hours. The trail is open throughout the fair weather season and is available during daylight hours. Although intense, this trail is reasonably appropriate for varying levels of ability. This solitary endeavor is alluring as there is no entry deadline. Although Bozeman, Montana is just a little out of the perimeter of being accurately positioned within the Pacific Northwest, the Bridger Ridge Run has trail runners flocking to enter their names into its elite lottery. This harrowing August race was created by Bozeman’s supreme adventure athlete Ed Anacker and is limited to only 250 carefully selected athletes each year. The race flaunts itself as a narrow and tormenting 19.65-mile trail that gains 6,800 feet in the Bridger Mountains. Runner’s World

coined the Bridger Ridge Run as one of the best and most technical trail runs in the country. Outside Online has deemed it to be on the top 10 bucket list trail runs in the world. Any entry form with an opening line of “Are you sure you want to do this?” is unquestionably designed for the experienced runner. There is an anonymous quote that the human spirit needs places that have not been re-arranged by the hands of man. We can find ourselves enamored in these majestically beautiful moments that can only be experienced on foot. Life becomes serene, simple and fulfilling when running in a place of beauty. It’s just you, the view and the breeze generated by the acceleration of your own two feet. When it comes to the offering of nature’s picturesque landscape, Idaho and Washington will take your breath away. Data published by Running USA indicates that the half marathon is the fastest growing race in the industry. They report that since 2000, the number of finishers has quadrupled. The half marathon offers more of a challenge than the 5K but is not as extreme as the full 26.2-mile marathon. Sandpoint, Idaho is home to the Scenic Half Marathon; one of the most aweinspiring half marathons available. One of the notable components of this race is that it also offers a 5K and a 10K opportunity which makes its scenic views available to the expert and the novice. In September, runners journey through the quaint downtown and make their way across the iconic long bridge that bestows panoramic views of the mountains and Lake Pend Oreille.

92

The Bellingham Bay Marathon in September is renowned as being one of the most beautiful of all courses. It begins and ends in the charming downtown area of Bellingham. Runners are enamored with views of the Bellingham Bay, San Juan Islands and the Cascade Mountains. This race is certified by the USA Track & Field organization as a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon and is generously supported by its volunteers. Many runners return each year so that they may partake in the scenic splendor only provided by this course. A run is never just a run; it’s irrelevant whether it’s one mile or 50 miles. It’s about setting out to accomplish something truly difficult. The sport parallels life; sometimes, you’re left feeling as though you could take on the world and other times, the world has taken on you. Occasionally, the runner unveils this treasurable moment in which the brain is immersed in a sea of its own endorphins and it can momentarily envision how it must feel to run with the elite. All great things seem to collide, and you find yourself as a running god. Whatever reason is stowed in the heart to run, there is no other place that will offer such diversity, challenge and scenic majesty than the great Pacific Northwest.

Festival

Thank you to all who participated at the 5th Annual Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival! What an incredible way to celebrate the region’s wines, spirits, brews and food on the waterfront of downtown Gig Harbor. We had over 50 regional restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries participating in this special weekend, as well as hundreds of guests. Festival-goers were encouraged to park and ride the shuttle to the venue from one of two designated festival parking areas. Shuttles and parking were free and were in operation beginning at 10am to serve Wine and Food Festival guests. The first annual Sip & Stroll was a resounding success with event attendees spending the evening strolling throughout the downtown waterfront and savoring sips and tastes at participating locations.
