PUBLISHER United We Stand YOU DRIVE DOWN THE STREET and see the flags at half-mast. If you are like me, you stop and wonder just which of the latest tragedies this represents. In the last several months we have been faced with senseless violence every time we turn on the TV. And with the recent murders of our police officers, this violence has risen to a whole new level. When will it stop? As a community and a society in general, it is time we start learning to respect one another in spite of our differences. When God created each one of us, He did so by making us each unique from one another. We should rejoice in our differences, not condemn one another because of them. During this political season, we need to elect leaders who can step up and bring forth unity and solutions to our problems. We have seen enough of hurtful rhetoric and leaders who commit crimes only to have their hand slapped. Let’s start fostering a culture that works together as one and is divided by few. And let’s start today. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

SHELTER PART 2: THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
THERE ARE MANY TYPES of shelter from single houses to multi-unit dwellings. However, the most common choice in America is by far the detached single-family home. (Note the keyword choice as a step above mere survival.) From caves to castles, there are so many styles of this type of shelter that one may recite their ABCs: A-frame, Bungalow, Colonial, Dogtrot, Earthship, Farmhouse, Geodesic, Hut, Igloo, Jugendstil, Kit-house, Log cabin, McMansion, Neoclassical, Octagon, Pole house, Queenslander, Rambler, Saltbox, Tudor, Unit, Vernacular, Wigwam, X-braced house, Yurt and Zapotec. Aside from the single-family residence, one may choose from semi-attached/ attached dwelling units such as duplexes and townhomes, apartments, condominiums, row houses, flats, mother-in-laws, rooming houses and multi-family homes. as the tent, travel trailer, tiny house on wheels, yurt, houseboat or float house, or even the newly redesigned covered hammock, are always an option as well. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we find many traditional styles of the single-family home. Most are wood-framed and fall into the following styles: cottage, bungalow craftsman and cabin, lodge, contemporary, coastal or modern.

Small wood frame structures with low-pitched roofs incorporate architectural details of cottage or bungalow design, such as Arts and Crafts style inspired Craftsman houses featuring fine woodcraft, glass and metal work. These regionally crafted structures tend to have deep covered porches, built-in cabinets and furniture. The Pacific Northwest lodge, and its smaller version, the cabin, employ regionally sourced materials as well as indigenous design. They normally have a large common space with high ceilings composed of wood posts and beams and rustic details.

“MY WHOLE LIFE I’ve planned carefully and saved my pennies so that I’ll have enough money to see me through,” Mary says quietly, staring out at the view she’s enjoyed for the last few decades. “I’ve heard heartbreaking stories of friends whose costs have skyrocketed with an unexpected health crisis. My kids keep saying that they’ll help me, but I don’t want to be a burden.” For many seniors, planning for retirement is a family affair and involves several key questions: How will you pay for health care, and what happens if your money runs out? Where will you live if you need assistance? How accessible is health care? Who will manage care on your behalf? Do you have realistic expectations of your family members? Truthfully, if you postpone decisions, it often means that someone else makes the decision for you. In a crisis scenario, will your family members have the financial resources, flexible schedules and emotional capacity for taking on that burden of decision making? Nationwide, there are more than 2,000 Community Care Retirement Communities (also known as Life Plan) that provide a continuum of care: Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Support and Skilled Nursing. But there are three different types

of CCRC’s, and only a Type A can offer you the security of financial predictability and guaranteed access to care. Type A has two pricing elements –monthly fees and an entrance fee (often substantially refundable). Thanks to the entrance fee, the financial advantages of a Type A are substantial because your monthly fee stays the same (aside from annual increases for inflation) even if you move into higher levels of care. In other words, you (and your adult children) don’t have to worry about fees doubling overnight when a health crisis occurs. Monthly costs stay consistent, and the Type A Life Care Contract provides the peace of mind that health care will be provided within the community you’ve come to know and trust. “I feel so relieved that I found a Type A; it’s the best gift I can give my kids,” Mary says with a smile. “Now they won’t have to worry about me – and it feels great.” Ask yourself if you are comfortable with carrying the risks of the uncertain costs and unpredictability, or if you gain greater security by investing in a Type A Life Care community. One thing is for sure - you owe it to yourself to make an educated and informed decision that is best for you.

SMALL-BUSINESS OWNERS MUST PROTECT THEIR FUTURES
Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
ARTICLE PROVIDED BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR
IF YOU’RE A SMALL-BUSINESS owner, you think a lot about today. Is your cash flow sufficient … today? Are your products and services competitive … today? Are you confident in your marketing and advertising efforts … today? And because you are so focused on today, you may be neglecting a key aspect of tomorrow – your retirement. Specifically, do you have a good retirement plan for yourself? Given that your personal finances are so tied up with your business, your plans for the business will obviously greatly affect your financial situation when you retire. Whether you want to transfer the business to another family member, sell it outright to someone else, or possibly just wind it down, you’ll need to plan ahead and consult with your legal and tax advisors. However, you can take steps now to help ensure you can enjoy a comfortable retirement. You have access to a variety of retirement plans appropriate for smallbusiness owners, including these: Owner-only 401(k) – This plan, also known as an individual or a “solo” 401(k), is available to self-employed individuals and business owners with no full-time employees other than themselves or a spouse. As the owner, you can contribute to your plan as both an employer and an employee; your total contribution limit for 2016 is $53,000, or $59,000 if you are 50 or older. SEP IRA – If you have just a few employees or are self-employed with no employees, you might consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the plan with tax-deductible contributions, and you must cover all eligible employees. (Employees themselves cannot contribute.) You can contribute up to 25% of compensation, up to $53,000 annually. (Contributions for
a self-employed individual are limited to 25% of compensation minus one-half of self-employment taxes.) And you can fund your SEP IRA with many different types of investments. Plus, you can establish a SEP IRA for 2016 until April 17, 2017. Defined benefit plan – Pension plans, also known as defined benefit plans, have become less prevalent in recent years – but you can still set one up for yourself if you are selfemployed or own your own business. This plan has high contribution limits, which are determined by an actuarial calculation, and as is the case with other retirement plans, your contributions are typically taxdeductible. SIMPLE IRA – As its name suggests, a SIMPLE IRA is easy to set up and maintain, and can be a good plan if your business has fewer than 10 employees. Still, while a SIMPLE IRA may be advantageous for your employees, it’s less generous to you, as far as allowable contributions, than an owneronly 401(k), a SEP IRA or a defined benefit plan. For 2016, your annual contributions are generally limited to $12,500, or $15,500 if you’re 50 or older by the end of the year. You can also make a matching contribution of up to 3% of your compensation. You need to establish a SIMPLE IRA between Jan. 1 and Oct. 1 of any year. In fact, if you’d like to set up any of the retirement plans we’ve looked at, don’t delay. The sooner you open your plan, the more years you will have to contribute – and, as you know, time is often an investor’s best friend.

THE POWER OF WOW DECIDE, NOTICE, ACT
BY DEBORAH OLIVE
MOBILIZE
THE WETLANDS, ATHLETIC FIELDS, amphitheater and open spaces at Sehmel Homestead Park are sporting more people than normal. Pokemon Go, the video game played on mobile devices, is part virtual and part real. It’s bringing people from behind their computers and into the parks. Gamers look for Pokemons as they walk – and walk. One of the best places to walk is in our parks.
problem to get people outdoors and exercising. People walk as they play the game. Brilliant! Overnight, Pokemon Go is mobilizing millions of people. My articles typically address having a better business or quality of life, so you may wonder why I’m writing about the Pokemon Go phenomenon. You see, the creators saw the same problems everyone else saw, but rather than complain, they got creative and developed an elegant solution. This isn’t just about gaming. It’s about you and I. It’s about seeing and solving problems. It’s about sorting out complaints and creativity.
I haven’t personally played Pokemon Go, but I’ve been walking my dog, Shakti, through neighborhoods for years. During one of my walks last week, six kids who were outside playing asked if they could pet my dog. I stopped. They reached out, one by one, to greet my favorite canine, and we started a conversation. A 9-year-old boy announced, “I am really tired. I just walked three miles.” One of the other children said, “I’m tired too. I walked 2.7 miles.” I asked, “How do you know how far you walked?” Both of them said, “Pokemon Go tells you.” I’d just spoken with my first Pokemon Go players. I thought, “Of course, the game runs on their phone, so the distance they walk is built in.”
Over the last three decades, we’ve learned a great deal about positive psychology and neuroscience. This is far more than negative or positive thinking. We need to nurture our ability to see and solve problems. One approach is from an “Ow Brain” perspective. When we focus on solutions over and over with minimal progress, our point of view often shifts to blame someone, something or even ourselves. In short, we complain. When we’re in Ow Brain, there’s actually a cascade of neurochemicals that reinforce a sense of defeat and create a downward spiral. In time, we stop trying to effect a solution. The problem persists.
The light bulb came on. Over the last couple decades, a problem has developed. More and more of us sit behind computers to the detriment of exercise. Pokemon Go uses the very technology that created the

The second approach comes from a Wow Brain mindset. Progress can occur at a similar pace as the previous example, but when we’re in Wow Brain, obstacles are something we learn from, make adjustments and move forward with a sense of positive expectancy. No doubt, the inventors of Pokemon Go have a Wow mindset. Once the game went live, a few issues have come up, but I expect they’ll be solved from the Wow trend that’s part of the game’s DNA. The next time you decide to solve a problem, will you choose Ow or Wow? Once you see the difference, the choice is easy. Then it’s a matter of practice. And remember the power of DNA. Decide. Notice. “place with many berries.” What’s a tastier way to celebrate the roots of Olalla than a berry pie contest? Do you think that your baking is out of this world? If so, your pie could be declared the best berry pie in all the land! If you think that your pie can beat out the rest, contact pies@ olallabluegrass.com for more information on how to enter.
This year’s lineup is one to beat with Eclectic Cloggers (who have been with the festival since its start), Slocan Ramblers, Rural Delivery, Hot Damn Scandal, Danny Barnes, FarmStrong Country, Rabbit Wilde and Trout Steak Revival. Besides live entertainment there will be food and craft vendors, old time craft demonstrations, a large variety of entertainment for kids and Olalla’s famous berry pie contest!
Discounted tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets, at Al’s Store in Olalla, Allstar Guitar in Gig Harbor and Blend Wine Shop in Key Center, now through August 16. You can also get reduced-price tickets at the gate if you bring two cans of food, which goes to feed needy children through Food Backpacks 4 Kids. Full price tickets at the gate are cash only, please.
All of the money raised from this event goes right back into the community. With the funds from Olalla, they are able to maintain the old community hall, support the local PTA, Little League, food banks, music programs in several local schools and other good-works organizations. In the language of the natives that were on this land, “olalla,” means,

UNIQUE & INSPIRING Local artist creates one of a kind pieces BY PATTY HUTCHENS ART. IT NOT ONLY HAS THE POWER to transform a space, but a person’s soul as well. It can calm, inspire and evoke conversation. That is just one reason Áine Kmen is so passionate about her work. As a fulltime artist for nearly 10 years, Kmen creates original art, design and illustration for both homes and businesses.
“The majority of my business comes from people who are passionate about their own lives and want to be surrounded by art that inspires them,” said Kmen. Having lived in Gig Harbor for just six months, Kmen has already integrated herself into the community and looks forward to becoming even more involved. She enjoys attending the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce events and looks forward to helping out in whatever ways possible.
“I make handmade paper from plant fibers and recycled materials and this is incorporated in to my mixed media paintings, along with acrylic, watercolor, pencil and sometimes pastel,” said Kmen. “Each painting has multiple layers, giving them an ethereal feel.”
Kmen’s art is typically shown in at least one location in both Gig Harbor and Tacoma. Her studio is located on the property where she lives which is just a couple of miles from the harbor. She welcomes visitors by appointment. Her art can also be viewed and purchased online at FindArtYouLove.com. To learn more about the process of commissioning a special piece of art for one’s home or business, contact Áine Kmen directly by email or phone.
Her subject matter is diverse and includes everything from landscapes to spiritual pieces and abstract art. Her customers can choose from work already created by Kmen or they can commission a specific piece to fit with their space, color scheme and desires. Kmen is unique in that unlike many artists, she works fulltime at her trade allowing her to commit fully to her clients working closely with them to create that special piece that tells their unique and personal story they wish to share with others through the artwork.
Yes, art inspires. And for Kmen she said her inspiration comes from quiet time on the water and in the woods, and also from favorite literature and musicians. It is an inspiration she hopes others will find through her work.
Kmen moved to Gig Harbor in January of this year. She previously split her time between San Diego and Las Vegas, but the beauty of Gig Harbor beckoned her to move to our community.
“I hope my art inspires moments of the same inner-quiet in the people I’m lucky enough to meet through my work and daily life.”
“I came here because I am in love with the community, am inspired by the beauty of the area, and wanted the perfect place to call home,” said Kmen, who enjoys sailing and wanted to be close to the water.

Before devoting her life fulltime to her art, Kmen worked in environmental education for several years for regional and international nonprofits and said she was blessed with amazing adventures. Kmen is grateful to her customers who have supported her over the past decade in her work as an artist and said they are the reason behind her success.

“Tips” Of Encouragement
Gig Harbor men, three decades apart, ally to foster dreams By Jon Johansen, Lighthouse School. Photos by Diane Fetzner. “Timely advice is as lovely as gold apples in a silver basket.” -Ancient Proverb

Among many duties, Abersold selflessly helps area boys and girls receive initial experience in broadcasting. And Brook? He inspires folks to follow their greatest ambitions — a calling that came to him in 2013. Something beautiful. At first blush, an association between burly Spencer Abersold — a passionate music fan — and stately Ed Brook—a former executive and business owner — may have seemed unlikely. However, both share a powerful tie that binds — a heart for others. Among many duties, Abersold selflessly helps area boys and girls receive initial experience in broadcasting. And Brook? He inspires folks to follow their greatest ambitions — a calling that came to him in 2013.
Lift Up
While recovering from surgery Brook realized, “When I worked for a living, I never made time to help others, due to the fact that I was so focused on achieving the goals that my wife, Kay, and I had set.” That changed on a hospital bed. Suddenly, he felt led to electronically inspire his grandchildren,

following erupted. Soon requests poured in for more pearls of wisdom; heads of companies even forwarded the life lessons to their employees. Within a year Brook felt led to pitch the concept to KGHP. Brook recalls Abersold’s response to his initial plug, “He told me that he had been waiting years for someone to come in” with something of this type. Abersold explains that, more than a decade after becoming manager, “I instantly saw the brilliance in Ed’s tips and asked him to record and broadcast his messages from our studio.” An enduring friendship was born — one that continues as Brook’s daily advice fills KGHP’s airwaves at 9am, 1pm, and 4pm. Abersold gushes, “I like the simplicity, truth, intellect, universality and feeling of empowerment I get from listening to each message ... they

provide an insight into the human condition that allows the audience to learn and grow, strengthen and harness power and find fulfillment.” The soul-filling story doesn’t end there. In time, each piece of fatherly advice became a book titled, “Ed’s 101 Tips of the Day.” With the confidence of Abersold behind him, Brook had the courage to approach other broadcasters. Ed ultimately met with Fishnet Syndication in Texas. Their experts helped him to transform the tidbits into succinct, marketable, 60-second spots.
Hope
A mere 24 hours after Fishnet’s first promotions went out, a radio station in Pennsylvania picked up Brook’s work! Now, roughly three years removed from the postsurgical, “a-ha” moment that provided his new direction, Brook’s words influence a growing audience while still impacting men like Abersold. Spencer recently shared his favorite “Ed-isms.”
I can vouch for this. I recently had coffee with a middleaged friend who lost his business and very nearly ended his marriage. As I tried to encourage my friend, I found myself quoting Brook’s story.
“‘Why wait for your boat to come in, when you can jump in and swim out to it, and it will get there that much faster?’ and ‘Everybody knows that Babe Ruth was the homerun king, but very few know that he was also the strike out king.’”
“Hey man,” I offered, “I’ve been working on a piece about this retired fella from Gig Harbor. Though he had been a great success in the world’s eyes, he had a personal awakening in his 70s, after surgery brought him low.”
Since Brook’s pearls have already reached into the hearts of many, a natural question might be, “What keeps this project going?”
My friend leaned forward, paper cup of java in hand, and listened. Did I see hope in his eyes? I added, “Over the past three years, Ed started the next great act of his life—investing in people. He wrote a book. Now he’s on the radio.”
Brook’s own words beautifully respond, “Everyone wants inspiration. Everyone wants to read about how good they can be. Everyone wants to know ‘anything is possible’ in this wonderful country called America.”
A half-smile crept to the corner of my buddy’s mouth. His eyes sparkled. “And, that is what you are doing. You just completed the first part of training for your new career. And you’re cherishing your family anew. I respect you so much! The next chapter of your life’s story?” He leaned in as I answered my own query, “It’s going to be the best one yet.” In that very moment I realized that I wasn’t just talking to him. I was preaching to myself. I thought about the painful, yet hope-filled book I’d been writing, off and on. Brook helped inspire me to finish it. As such, I believe that I was meant to interview Brook and Abersold. They have courageously pursued their mission to bless people. Many have been inspired by their stories. Even my buddy. Even me.

Learning to Swim Safely Olympic medalist opening a swim school in Gig Harbor By Jani Gonzalez OLYMPIC SWIMMER AND GOLD MEDALIST, Amanda Beard, not only calls Gig Harbor home, she’s sharing her passion for water safety for children at her upcoming school, Beard Swim Co. Beard made Olympic history as the youngest athlete competing at the 1996 summer games and winning one gold and two silver medals. She competed in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics, winning a total of seven Olympic medals. Since then, she’s been busy with business ventures, children and her memoir, “In the Water They Can’t See You Cry.” Her latest venture is opening Beard Swim Co. on Main and Pine, and it might not be what you expect. Beard’s school will focus on swim safety rather than competition for all ages but particularly for babies 6 months old to children up to 8 years of age. “There are a million reasons (to open the school). We live in Gig Harbor where we’re surrounded by water,” Beard said in a phone interview. “(The school) is really for all ages and won’t be restricted. (Lessons) will be based on skill levels.” KidsHealth cites drowning as the second most common cause of death among children younger than 14 years of age. Drowning can occur surprisingly fast, and the victim may not be able to call for help. In young children, it can happen in a matter of minutes, sometimes in less than two minutes. Each year, parents are reminded to supervise young children even if they know how to swim or are wearing a life jacket. Parents are reminded to also take precaution when swimming in open bodies

of water where temperature and currents can change quickly the swimming conditions. Home pools should have barriers and alarms; hot tubs should have safety covers. Water safety is at Beard’s forefront and is something that she’s contributed to for the past 20 years. She’s worked with numerous drowning prevention and water safety organizations in Southern California and fire departments in Arizona, where she most recently lived.
“Growing up in Southern California – swim lessons and pools are everything. I was in the water at 6 months. At 3 years, I could swim a lap. By 4 years, I had joined a swim team just like my older sisters. (Swimming) just clicked with me, and I fell in love with the sport,” Beard said. By age 11, she had joined a swim club and was swimming year round, and at 14, she had qualified for the Olympic team.

to assist in developing swim school schedules. Beard said that she has received many inquiries about assembling a competitive swim team but that remains a part of future plans.
“We want kids to learn quickly and safely,” Beard said.
“I’ve always had that in the back of my mind. We would love to branch out with swim teams but need a pool, and it’s not part of this phase,” she said.
Her sister, Taryn, will be one of the instructors, but Beard and Brewer are still in the hiring stages and have been accepting applications from across the country. “We want people who are passionate about kids and water safety,” she said. “I’ll be heavily involved and will be there every day.” She will also teach private lessons and workshops educating parents about keeping their children safe in the water. Instructors will also be trained about how best to teach water safety. The school will have three smaller pools averaging four feet in depth for group lessons. “(The pools) will be nice and warm and the right environment for kids,” she said. Classes will be kept small to minimize distractions and maintain kids focused on instruction. Construction on the pool will begin in six weeks, and they expect to open their doors for lessons come January of 2017. Beard Swim Co. has partnered with local Gig Harbor pool company Aqua Spas and Pools to build and maintain their pools. There is a waiting list though it does not mean parents are committed to lessons, but they are encouraged to sign up (beardswimco.com)

Beard has been busy working for Aqua Sphere, where she helps design and promote their swim suits. She is also co-owner of Mission Athletecare with Serena Williams and Dwyane Wade designing products for athletes. Beard also does motivational speaking and leads swim clinics around the country. Choosing Gig Harbor for Beard Swim Co. was easy because it’s home. Beard’s parents are originally from Gig Harbor, and she and her family would visit relatives. “We would always say how beautiful it was here, and it finally dawned on us, ‘Why aren’t we living here?’” she said. Two years ago, they did just that and are happy to be Gig Harbor residents. She lives there with her husband, photographer Sacha Brown, and has two children.

THE HARBOR HISTORY Museum’s Pioneer School Experience, led by Leann O’Neill, got a real treat last April. After all, what’s better than dressing up in costumes to learn about history? The kids loved it. Young students from Gig Harbor Academy and Voyager Elementary enjoyed a historically-based fictitious reenactment where they had the opportunity to participate dressed in clothing reminiscent of the early 1900s. The living history event was created by three University of Puget Sound students – Bennet Roper, Samuel Friedman and Ryder Marsden – that was part of an experimental education class the students were taking, in keeping with their museum studies. The students were required to engage with local schools about Blake Island. The history event revolved around smugglers, women’s struggles and the logging industry that was

then booming at the turn of the century. Children came dressed for school for the specific time period of the early 1900s and spent half the day in the restored midway schoolhouse with an actual school-marm, where they reenacted the school day. Following that, they spent time in the museum galleries. Ending the day was the launch of a boat on the east side of Gig Harbor and then a row across the harbor. After landing, they interacted about the play, why it was written, and Miss Bennet (her character in 1901) met them there. The kids had the opportunity to ask questions. The boat was made by Dave Robertson of Gig Harbor Boat Works, who watched the reenactment. The reenactment was produced by the three students with O’Neill’s guidance, and tied in Gig Harbor as part of a partnership with the Harbor History Museum and Oars Northwest. It prepared them for a journey
that begins in August with Oars Northwest down the Mississippi River. Harbor History Museum’s Pioneer School Experience Now the real fun begins! This phenomenal program, led by O’Neill, who is a retired educator with a masters in curriculum and instruction, is living her dream of helping young children grasp what it was really like to live so long ago at the turn of the century. O’Neill produces the historic programming education for the school at the museum where children can come on field trips. (Adults are
always encouraged to come participate!) By having the children engage and go to school in an old school house and even have a real school-marm, it sparks many questions from the kids. “We have served 1,365 students over the last six years,” said O’Neill. “We look forward to children of all ages joining us!”

Inspiring the Next Generation By Dan Aznoff & Lynette Hoy Photos courtesy EnviroCorp Gig Harbor resident Karen Larson smiled last year as she watched dozens of families take advantage of an evening filled with games and fun activities. Why? Because she knew that proceeds from the evening would help fund the preservation of nature trails and create guardians to protect sensitive areas of the peninsula. Larson is the director of development for EnviroCorp, the outdoor advocate division of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. She made her observation last summer during the Cider Swig, the signature event of the foundation’s Parks & Environmental Core Area Board that works to engage the community to improve trails and open spaces. Proceeds from last year’s Swig
helped fund the creation of the Junior Explorer’s Club at the Curious by Nature School as well as an all-volunteer effort by youngsters at the school to clean the Adam Tallman Nature Preserve. The preserve has been described as a natural oasis in the middle of town that features scenic trails through wetlands with native flora and fauna.

Stations will include arts and crafts, Apple Science, an Apple Obstacle Course and, of course, an apple toss. There will also be a bounce house for the younger members of the crowd.
The 2016 edition of the Cider Swig is scheduled to return to the Kids Apple Zone this fall on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 24, from noon until 5pm. This marks the third year in a row the event will be hosted by the Kids Apple Zone. Larson said the Cider Swig is the primary source of funding for the small grant awarded to local groups involved in restoration and preservation activities within

The Envirocorps was founded in 20004 as the vision of the late Vernon J. Young, who saw the volunteer force as the best means to ensure that local trails, roadways and other public lands are safe and pleasant places for local residents and visitors to the area.

An Open Letter to the Better Gym in Gig Harbor By Heidi Canda
ONCE AGAIN IN LIFE, my coping skills had come under attack. I was being attacked by my mind and thoughts. I have a history of depression and anxiety and could have tried to guess which situation had triggered these emotions. Or, I could assume that I was destined to this disorder based on certain chemicals in my brain. Either way, it’s not anything I have ever wanted to dig up and conquer. I rather cope and work through it. But that is the biggest problem. Depression is not about getting out of the mud, pulling up your boot straps and moving on. Depression is debilitating if not dealt with from outside sources. If this means
medication so be it; if this means therapy so be it. I thought I had come to a point in my journey where I needed to unload some of the things that triggered this particular attack. Money, kids, work, marriage, eating right, getting to the gym were all things that were on my mind. Were these the things causing my anxiety? How could I change my situation and inability to cope for the better? Well, I couldn’t give away the kids or quit my marriage, and I needed money to eat - so, that left the gym.

I had been picked as the Member of the Month. Really? But I was going to break up with the gym. I was about to put my membership on hold for the rest of the summer.
I told myself that I would just take a break from the gym — a summer break — and would start again when the kids went back to school. This would give me a few more bucks in my wallet and would free up time for family and work. So a break it was. That was my plan for getting through the attack. Would I miss my friends? Yes. Would I miss feeling awesome after a workout? Yes. Would I miss feeling strong lifting over 250 pounds? Yes. Would I miss some of the most inspirational people I know? Yes. Would I miss the constant accountability? Yes. The day I decided to quit the gym, it was going to be the start of my recovery. Except that once I made the decision, I received a text from them the same day! I was so shocked with the text I couldn’t even respond to it. It said, “Can you send me your Member of the Month questionnaire again? You won.” I had won — I had been picked as the Member of the Month. Really? But I was going to break up with the gym. I was about to put my membership on hold for the rest of the summer. Did I deserve this award? Sure, maybe yesterday or last week, a month or six months ago. I mean, all of my gym family deserves this award. But that day I didn’t deserve it because I was quitting. I had to think about it for a minute; I had to cope with this. I couldn’t say, “No thank you. Not today, think of me again in September.” I decided that I couldn’t quit. Instead, I had to rethink my plan for recovery.
know how this sounds. It sounds like some over-excited juicing guru who wants to liberate the world with kale. But diet and exercise really work. I feel badly when I eat junk food, and I feel clean when I eat healthy food. A diet that consists of clean, healthy, whole foods is almost magical. Eating the right amounts of fats, proteins, vegetables and some carbs really works. The text from the gym reminded me that eating healthy is key. It also reminded me that working out at the gym helps my mind. I don’t know why, and once again can only guess what happens to the chemicals in my brain when I workout. I feel physically different when I leave the gym. Before a workout, I can be cloudy and have a hard time focusing. Once my heart rate increases and the sweat starts dripping, my mind clears up. The world around me becomes a little less hazy. It also becomes a little bit more doable. With each workout, my mind continues to clear up. The text from the gym reminded me that exercise is key. Last, it reminded me that just because I love to go to gym, it is not an extracurricular activity or social hour. The gym is my medication; it is my therapy. On the day I was going to quit, I made sure I showed up ready to work instead. Because on that day, I was reminded that just because something is a lot of fun, it doesn’t mean it’s not hard work and unnecessary.

Poor quality sleep for FMS sufferers has to do with abnormal sleep breathing, especially seen in patients with sleep apnea, which, by some, is considered to be a cause of FMS. Also, FMS can potentially increase the risk of sleep apnea in those who don’t already have the condition. It’s another case of “what came first ...” Although there doesn’t seem to be an answer yet for why people with FMS tend to have sleep apnea, the fact FMS symptoms get worse with lack of sleep means that treating the situation effectively is very important. Plus, FMS patients suffer from fatigue. The biggest reason for the fatigue is the poor quality sleep that most people with FMS experience.

MENTAL ATTITUDE: Email-Based Interventions Improve Wellbeing. In this study, researchers found that participants who engaged with an email-based program aimed at improving their well-being experienced long-term improvements in their ability to handle stress, in their confidence in the future and in the amount of physical activity they engaged in per week. The authors concluded, “Internet-based interventions are feasible for mental health promotion and should be available for people interested in improving their psychological well-being and lifestyle. The results showed improvement in 86 percent of the patients who received SMT versus improvement in only 49 percent of the patients who received injections. The findings support the use SMT over injections blocks to treat a symptomatic cervical disk herniation. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, April 2016
Health Alert: Changes in Sleep Affect the Heart. Lack of sleep and an abnormal sleep cycle may increase the risk of heart disease. This study involved 26 healthy people who were restricted to five hours of sleep per night for eight days with either fixed bedtimes or bedtimes delayed by 8.5 hours on half the nights. The researchers found the changes in sleep resulted in higher daytime heart rates, with the greatest effect when sleep was both shortened and delayed. In addition, they observed that abnormal sleep patterns increased the levels of a stress hormone called norepinephrine known to narrow blood vessels, raise blood pressure and expand the windpipe. STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE IT CAN IMPACT MUCH MORE THAN YOU REALIZE BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, ACE PERSONAL TRAINER MOST PEOPLE HAVE PROBABLY heard that maintaining a strong abdominal core can help prevent back pain and keep good posture. But what about other functions such as digestion, breathing, circulation and other physiological functions of the body? Having a strong core is a key to maintaining good health, but it is important to know what the core really is and the most optimal way to keep it strong.
The core is a very complex group of muscles that start from the inside of the body with the diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles and deep abdominal muscle in the front, and vertebral muscles on the back of the body. The outermost muscles of the core consist of the rectus abdominis (six-pack) muscle in front, internal and external obliques on the side of the body, and the back extensor muscles that run along the spine. Other important core muscles include the muscles of the rib cage and muscles of the hip such as the hip flexors and gluteal muscles. When in balance, all of these muscles work together to maintain a healthy body and healthy strong core. A strong diaphragm aids in increased air and oxygen, which drive most metabolic functions in the body, and proper expansion of the diaphragm aids in digestion by rhythmically massaging the intestine with each breath cycle. Taking strong, deep breaths, using the
B R E AT H E !
H E expanding A L T H YtheT Irib P cage, is diaphragm and vital for maintaining good health. Poor posture, stress and expanding waistlines can put a burden on the diaphragm and cause the muscle to weaken. People with poor breathing habits tend to practice stress breathing – taking short and shallow breaths and using the neck muscles and not expanding the diaphragm to get air. Another poor but common breathing pattern is belly breathing, which happens when the transverse abdominis muscle becomes weak, allowing the internal organs to bulge out of the abdomen, causing a large, weak abdomen, and no way for the diaphragm to find leverage with each breath cycle. When the lungs fill with air, the belly pushes outward, as the rib cage is now unable to expand. This further weakens and stretches the transverse abdomens. Another side effect of the weakened transverse abdominis and diaphragm is poor digestion. Without the gentle massage of the digestive system with each breath, digestion slows down considerably which causes gas and further bloating. So how does one strengthen these two muscle groups? Exercise techniques such as Pilates and yoga tend to focus heavily on breathing and can be a good way to practice good breathing habits. Another good exercise is to focus on expanding the rib cage with each breath by drawing the tummy in and letting the ribs flare out. This can be done lying down on the back, placing one hand on the abdomen, and one hand on the rib cage. With each breath, the top hand on the rib cage should come up while the hand on the abdomen should move only slightly inward with inhalation and outward with exhalation. It is important to exhale very slowly through pursed lips to avoid hyperventilation. Strengthening these muscle groups can be a slow process, but by practicing these exercises it will have a positive effect on overall health into the future.

PARTNERING FOR PROGRESS IN KENYA HOPE, A “HAND UP,” AND PLUMPY’NUT
MOST TRAVELERS TO Africa return with amazing stories of grand vistas, vast wilderness, and teeming wildlife. Volunteers who visit southwest Kenya with Partnering for Progress (P4P), a Spokane, Washington based non-profit see spectacular sights on a six-hour ride through Kenya’s Great Rift Valley to the rural villages of Kopanga/ Giribe. The valley is bordered by massive escarpments, contains a chain of volcanos and is traveled by red-cloaked Maasai tribesman. Many volunteers add a wildlife safari to their itinerary.

FEATURE STORY
Those aren’t the stories, however, that brighten the voices of P4P volunteers like Beth Sheeran, an emergency room nurse at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, who has traveled to Kenya twice. Their stories are about the wonderful people they helped and befriended — people who live in deep poverty with rampant malnutrition and illness but are warm, resilient and hardworking, and who move the visitors gifting them with a new perspective.
skin conditions, diarrhea and HIV/AIDS. The baby who so touched their hearts didn’t survive and on the flight home, Ivers and Mainer made a commitment to help. Mainer recalls, “We gathered our friends around our dining room table and decided to start a non-profit.” In 2008, with a grassroots effort they founded Partnering for Progress. “Our fundraising attempts were things like garage sales.” P4P began sending volunteer teams of doctors, nurses, dentists, health educators and nutritionists to Kopanga and helped build a modern clinic there.
One of Sheeran’s stories is about Mama Quinter. Blinded by the measles as a young girl, Mama Quinter can’t leave her hut without help, and it’s hard to care for her tiny malnourished twins. Mama’s husband has another wife and other children — polygamy is common in traditional Kenyan communities — and the family’s meager resources are stretched thin. Many of the poor farmers in the area support their families on $1.00 a day — less than we might leave in the tip jar at Starbucks after buying a $4.00 latte.
Today, P4P volunteer teams visit Giribe — a village near Kopanga — twice a year. With their Kenyan health care counterparts, they provide medical and dental care at the Ogada Health Center, assess community health and exchange medical knowledge. P4P also attacks the root causes of poor health in the region with life-changing programs that battle malnutrition, award school scholarships, create clean drinking water sources and combat poverty. Rather than a one-time “hand out” of food or aid, these programs give a “hand up” that improves the long-term health — physical and economic — of the community.
Despite these difficulties, Mama is upbeat and thankful for her family. You can’t help but smile at her joyous nature in a video where she holds her incredibly cute babies, Quinter Tausi and Princess Taiwan and says, “God blessed me with two children.” While she expresses deep appreciation for the Plumpy’Nut nutritional supplement that P4P volunteers bring her babies, like so many Kenyans that P4P helps, she is looking for a “hand up, not a hand out.” Mama Quinter knows how to operate a knitting machine and dreams of someday knitting school uniform sweaters to help her family.
The organization also has a year-round presence in Kenya. Seth Okumu, P4P’s Program Manager in Giribe, coordinates P4P’s programs, assisted by another Kenyan, Charles Atha Otieno. Charles weighs babies and runs P4P’s Power of Milk program.
A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out
Beth Sheeran tells the story of a mother determined to help her tiny sickly baby. “One woman was hiking across the border from Tanzania just to sit in and listen to the lessons. She wanted to know how to feed her child appropriately. The people are hungry for the knowledge of how to care for their children.” Each week, the young mother trekked six miles, toting her baby in a sling, to sit with other caregivers and hear nutrition lessons to help her baby thrive—even though she wasn’t officially enrolled in P4P’s Power of Milk program.
The Power of Milk
Stacey Mainer, a nurse practitioner in Spokane, tells the story of another severely malnourished baby who inspired Stacey and her friend, Sandy Ivers, a retired teacher, to found P4P. “This poor little girl was probably the second most malnourished baby I had seen in my entire life,” remembers Stacey, who had seen many nutrition-deprived babies during her travels as a medical volunteer. “It just broke our hearts.” In 2007, Mainer, her husband Dr. Michael Mainer, Ivers and Ivers’ son Nick, volunteered at a medical clinic in Kopanga. For two weeks, they assisted Alice Kephas, a Kenyan nurse, at Kephas’s primitive understaffed clinic. The clinic had no running water and no electricity. Medical supplies were in short supply. Women delivered their babies on mats on a dirt floor. A steady stream of patients arrived with malaria, malnutrition,
Infant undernutrition causes much of the poor health and poverty in Kenya. “We see kids that are 1 or 2 years old and weigh only 8 or 9 pounds — birth weight for American kids,” Sheerhan says. “They are very vulnerable to any illness that comes along. Their brains can’t form correctly, so they can’t perform in school.”

FEATURE STORY
P4P’s Power of Milk program brings hope for some of these babies, who otherwise might not survive. Twenty children are enrolled in the program at a time. Mothers and babies gather weekly at the Ogada clinic for nutrition and health lessons that help the moms fight their babies’ undernutrition. Severely malnourished babies go home with Plumpy’Nut, a nutritional supplement provided by the Kenyan government that supports rapid weight gain and can save a starving child from illness or death. The program is also social. “After the class they get a meal. It’s really fun watching all of these caregivers with their babies. They sit around on the grass eating their meal and talking and engaging with each other,” explains Mainer. “They support each other on a really personal basis. It’s like a support group!” The resourceful and entrepreneurial Kenyan caregivers even organized a “table banking” group to pool their money to buy goats. Matching funds from P4P help the families obtain goats more quickly. Each week, Charles Atha Otieno weighs the babies. Once a child reaches a normal weight for their age, they remain in the program for another six months and then graduate. When a baby graduates, P4P throws a party and presents the family with two chickens as a graduation present! This life-changing “hand up” means that the family will have eggs — a
protein source for a better diet and an income source. So far, the Power of Milk program has saved the lives of more than 35 babies. Partners in Education Beatrice, a young girl determined to get an education, is the main character in one of Stacey Mainer’s stories. Beatrice and other determined kids like her motivated P4P to start a scholarship program for kids who otherwise couldn’t attend secondary school—kids like Rose Anyona, Ephy Adhiambo and Daniel Masaga. When Mainer and Ivers first met her, Beatrice was helping in the medical clinic in Kopanga as a caregiver for several orphaned babies. She was 16-years-old and already had a child. Beatrice dreamed of going to secondary school, what we call high school, but that seemed out of the question. In Kenya it’s especially hard for girls to go to school. Ivers explains, “Often the girls won’t go to school because the families are large and only so many kids can go to school. Girls are then pressured to move on and get married.” And it’s expensive. Paying tuition of as much as $600 per year isn’t possible for families surviving on $1.00 a day.

FEATURE STORY
Tell Your Own Stories
Beatrice’s school dreams wouldn’t die. When tuition assistance was offered by the clinic where she worked, Beatrice arranged for her mother to watch her children — by then she had three. Beatrice enrolled in school and has persevered, even when donor assistance ran out, forcing her to change schools several times.
Donations and two yearly fundraisers — an auction and a Spokane Civic Theater benefit — generate much of P4P’s funding. The 9th Annual Into Africa Auction will be held in Spokane Valley on Oct. 1, 2016. Attending this fun event supports P4P’s key initiatives like the Power of Milk. Volunteers are needed at the fundraisers and for P4P’s committees.
Now 24-years-old, Beatrice is a senior, about to graduate fourth in her class, and hopes to go to college. Mainer says, “Beatrice’s story shows the strength and resiliency of Kenyan women, and she reminds us why it’s so important to do what we can. She is truly hope.”
If you have dreamed of going to Africa, you can join one of P4P’s service teams on a volunteer trip to Kenya. Doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists, teachers and engineers are needed to treat patients, teach health and nutrition classes and help with clean water and economic development projects. Even if you don’t have those specific skills, there’s a place for you on the trips — everyone has talents that can help.
Each year, P4P’s scholarship program brings hope to 27 children in Kopanga/Giribe. Partnering Against Poverty
The volunteer trips are self-funded but are a great way to see Africa while helping people and seeing a different perspective. “There’s a saying in Kenya that I love. Americans have all the watches, but Kenyans have all the time,” says Linda HagenMiller, head of P4P’s Communications Committee. “We are always in such a hurry to get things done. They are a little more laid back. They want to talk to you, get to know you, and learn about your family, children and work.”
Poverty is at the root of many of the problems in Kopanga/ Giribe. “Improving the economic health of the community should improve everything,” Mainer explains. “If you have more money you improve your health because you can pay to go to the doctor to get medication, pay to have clean water and a latrine, and you can pay for your child to go to high school.” In 2015, P4P began an economic development project that helps local farmers increase their income by increasing the yield of their corn crop. The pilot project gave 10 local farmers a “hand up” with seed, fertilizer and agriculture education. The farmers saw an average increase in production of 300 percent, and Eunice Adhiambo had the largest increase — her harvest increased from five bags of corn previously to 19 bags. Eunice will use the income from her extra corn to pay school tuition for her children — providing more hope for the next generation.
Make a donation or volunteer, and give a “hand up” to Kenyans like Mama Quinter, Beatrice, Eunice Adhiambo and the young mother from Tanzania. Once you visit Kenya, you’ll come back with your own stories about the amazing people who do so much with so little. To learn more, visit P4P’s website at partneringforprogress.org. Michael McAuliffe is a freelance writer and photographer living in Edmonds, Washington. He can be contacted via his website at www.mcmikephoto.com.
In return for the seed and fertilizer, each farmer gave P4P a 198-pound bag of corn. The corn was sold to help fund the Power of Milk program and to award an additional school scholarship — a step towards making these programs sustainable.

UNIQUE DREAM HOMES RETHINKING YOUR HOME By Jani Gonzalez The American public has gotten increasingly creative about its ideal dream home. Creativity and innovation are everywhere. The novelty we are seeing in the media is perhaps a form of rebellion against widespread suburban sprawl and McMansions. Or it is an escape from our increasingly connected culture. Those looking to build or simply to dream need not go far. Click on the television, and you are bound to find an episode about treehouses, majestic cabins, mansions on wheels or some other unique and non-traditional abode. The choices open up the imagination – even if it’s to change up your current home. There is also a plethora of dream home magazines. Small or large, the ultimate place to call home is in the eye of the homeowner. Today’s dream homes come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes, with a surprising budget too.

There’s something to be said for simplicity
CABIN OASIS The thought of a cabin conjures up a makeshift wooden single room in the forest. Have you seen the penny honoring Lincoln’s cabin? Customized log homes have come a long way from that one-room stereotypical cabin. Historically, cabins have been used seasonally for vacation, but Americans are increasingly calling it their primary residence. Styles include the traditional Craftsman, which is smaller, more traditional but with an intricate floor plan and exposed wood trim. The Swiss/ German Colonial Cottage is larger with exposed beams and has a much more detailed decorative exterior and interior. The Adirondack is more like a lodge because of its open floor plan. It’s very classic and incorporates the use of native materials. From rustic to majestic – it’s obvious that the cabin has grown up.

Floating Fortress A home on the water is another way to live within nature’s tranquility and gain a deeper appreciation for one’s surroundings. Prospective buyers should factor in dock slip fees, taxes, insurance and maintenance. Also, you won’t be able to park close to your home, so accept that you’ll be carrying your belongings more. You’ll also need to confirm that your floating foundation is sound. Logistics aside, living in a floating home can make it seem like you’re always on vacation. Homeowners can fish off their deck (or through a window!) or change their scenery by getting towed to a new location.
Treehouse Hideout
The customized treehouses of today are a grown-up’s version of the ultimate hideout. If you’ve ever watched “Treehouse Masters” on Animal Planet, you know there are a host of logistics to building a treehouse. Most important are the trees that will support the home. Treehouse dreamers will likely want a second opinion to verify the trees they’ve selected can carry the weight load of the house. From there, the design process can make dreams come true – from whimsical forts and castles to modern-looking homes lifted considerably from the ground. And the adventure only begins when the house is finished. Treehouse dwellers live at the center of nature, swaying with the trees and getting a bird’s eye view of it all.

m a e r D Tiny homes are growing in popularity as not only a dream home but a way to a better, simpler lifestyle. The homes are between 100 and 400 feet and are often built on trailers because of code regulations. Living in a tiny home is in direct opposition to the direction of the average American house which is up to 2,600 square feet. Most dwellers of tiny homes live with minimal debt, no mortgage and have more personal and retirement savings. Not only is a tiny home more economical, it’s more environmentally friendly too because it uses less energy. If the thought of living within your means sounds simple and appealing, a tiny home might be your dream home and new lifestyle.
Luxury Mansion Mansions are where one can have it all for the right price. Whether you buy new or old, mansions come with a large menu of amenities: swimming pools, tennis courts, bowling alleys, home theaters and spiral stair cases – these might just be a few of your favorite things. It’s where you can have a dedicated room for each of your activities. Mansions can be in the middle of the city or the country – it’s your choice. These homes are the trophies for deep pockets and are a display of pure wealth. They are the homes of the “Rich and Famous,” but a few ingenious individuals have become caretakers of second homes, and are able to “have it all” in return for their work.

Waterfront homes give you the best of two worlds: property and access to water. If you’re contemplating a home with a body of water for a front yard, it’s best to work with a realtor who is well-versed in this type of property. You’ll need to know the quality of the house since waterfront weather is harsher than in other areas. Also think about how your lifestyle will benefit. You may be in a more remote area which may or may not suit you. As with other specialty homes, there is a cost to customization, and you need to educate yourself to how you can access the water and what changes you may do to the property.

CONTAINER HOMES Living inside the box By Jani Gonzalez

The dream home is changing. Gone are the pie-in-the-sky options of a mansion on a hill. Those are still being dreamt of and built, but let’s face it, not many of us will ever afford that quintessential house on the hill. More and more, however, people are finding creative ways to get their ideal homes. In recent years, with a new interest in repurposing and being mindful of the environment, shipping containers are being used in a variety of ways to build small and large homes. More people are considering using them as a unique and relatively inexpensive way to customize their home.
In the past decade, however, the use of shipping containers has increased in part because of an ongoing surplus of containers available in the U.S. It is estimated that 90 percent of our goods are delivered from overseas via cargo shipping containers. Because the U.S. imports more than it exports, the containers have become abundant in supply. That surplus has made it an affordable building material. Its frugality combined with a cultural drift to repurposing items and being mindful of waste – whether it be wasted space or building refuse – has made shipping containers an alternative home affordable to many.
A brief history of shipping containers
Tom Woods, author of the blog, “Container Home Plans,” thinks the recent interest in container homes is possibly out of environmental and financial reasons. “I think there are many reasons why people are opting (for) this type of home, including both financial and sustainable. But fundamentally, I see it as a movement by people who are both environmentally conscious but also seeking financial independence through more affordable building materials,” he said.
For many of us, we don’t think much about shipping containers, but according to the blog, “Container Home Plans,” before the 1950s, the transportation and delivery of goods was laborious and slow. Malcom McLean saw an opportunity to change that and is credited with the concept of the shipping container. His containers could transport goods by sea and be immediately loaded onto trains, thus reducing the time it took to deliver cargo. Two decades later, people were already devising of ways to use them for other reasons. In 1987, Phillip Clark was the first to file a patent to use shipping containers as building material, but other builders and architects had already had similar ideas. The first recorded structure built from a shipping container was in 1998 in South Africa, called Simon’s Town High School Hostel. It’s a huge structure built to house 200 students, and it’s still standing, proving the longevity of the containers as building material. In 2006, the popularity of this new building material was showcased by architect Peter DeMaria for a home in Redondo Beach, California. The home, as many others, is a hybrid of traditional construction with the stacked containers attached. The house stands white and glorious and is comparable to any modern luxury home. Its sleek modernity hides the obviousness of the containers.
Designing the container home Building a home out of shipping containers is considered a strong and quick way to construct a home. Costs, of course, will vary depending on the number of containers used and their arrangement, but a home could cost less than $100,000. These steel boxes generally come in two standard sizes: They are either 20 feet or 40 feet long 8 feet wide and 8-feet 6-inches high. There are two routes for future homeowners: purchase your own containers and hire contractors or hire a company that specializes in these homes. You can purchase a container from a dealer. Prices range between $2,100 and $5,800, and you can purchase them new or used. When hiring contractors, they should be familiar with shipping containers and know that you’ll have to comply with local regulations and permits. Although deemed faster and more cost-effective,

it doesn’t mean it’s meant for everyone. Placing a container on top of a newly poured concrete foundation can conceivably happen in one day. However, building a home is still a fulltime project even if you hire professionals, and there are always details that will arise during construction. You’ll still need to budget. It’s advised to have a working budget plus an emergency one as there are always unforeseen costs with any building project. Next, location is probably one of the bigger factors to consider. A shipping container makes it easier to build a home in almost any location, however, you still need to consider the feasibility of building with the containers. Also, are they acceptable where you want to live? Will you live on or off the grid? Consider these points too as you search for property. You’ll also need to consider your blueprint and stick to it. Changing your mind about room dimensions after construction begins will cost you. There are several concerns particular to shipping container homeowners. One of the primary concerns, if not purchasing a new, unused container, is what did it transport? You can inspect your containers by checking for corrosion, holes and bad odors. These could be indicators of previous chemical loads. There’s also been some concern about the chemicals used to treat the flooring for the containers to withstand shipping overseas. Homeowners can remove the floor boards, tile over them or use a sealer to prevent contamination. The decision may ultimately depend on your budget too. Shipping containers are strong and built to withstand harsh weather. However, if your property is on a high location, you should consider building in noise reduction capabilities to damper the sounds of the wind. Insulation and proper ventilation are other factors to include in your design. You must avoid anything that will trap moisture as condensation will create mold inside the containers. Using shipping containers as an alternative building source will certainly allow you to create a novel home from the rest in your surrounding area. Do your proper research online and with the experts to gain ideas about what to do and not. Being innovative with building materials and design is a sign of the times, making a custom home accessible to more prospective homeowners.

The RefUrbished Bell Camper
New or vintage, these trailers look like silver spaceships on the road. Regardless of their sizes, they’re not known for having much storage, but they have a reputation for being lightweight and durable. If you are looking to rehab a vintage trailer, be mindful of the era and whether parts are available. Also, note if there is still a pipe frame and if it needs modification, and make sure there is a holding tank for waste water. Although they are lightweight, make sure your vehicle can tow it. New ones keep getting lighter and appear more akin to the airships that initially inspired their design.
We are in an age of getting what we want without spending a fortune. So it’s no surprise there is a do-it-yourself (DIY) trend to refurbish vintage trailers. The Bell Travel Trailers, popular in the 60s and 70s, are getting a second chance at the road. These tiny trailers are best for the lone traveler or two. Because they are vintage trailers, they aren’t readily available and will take some hunting, but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? Keep in mind that these trailers are likely in need of repair. Before purchasing, check the siding, frame and electrical wires before even thinking about the aesthetic changes you want to make. Give it your best inspection for mold and leaks before moving ahead. The refurbishing project will leave you gratified and your adventures waiting for you.

The Airstream Camper 78
The Teardrop Camper
RVs basically encompass any mobile living unit and include motorhomes, travel trailers and camper vans. Class A motorhomes are the kings of the road. These are the ones that resemble tour buses. Class B motorhomes are campervans and are actually the smallest of the classes. Class Cs look like a van with a longer camper fitted on top. As the economy slowly strengthens, so do the sales of these recreational vehicles (RV). Instead of purchasing a vacation home, more people are opting for a second home on wheels. RVs range from being simply a space to sleep to luxurious motorhomes with all the amenities of a regular house. And for some, buying a RV is the way they’ll transition to retirement or financial independence.
The Luxury RV These are the smallest trailers and may just be a place to lay your head down at night. These trailers are typically between 4 feet wide and 6 feet long and go up to 10 feet long. They’re lighter and easier to tow and park without needing a larger vehicle for it. There’s been a resurgence of these models lately, and there are sleek designs gracing the road with aluminum or wooden sheathing. Some DIYers are even making their own from plans or a kit. For the babies of the camper family, many teardrop enthusiasts feel they can do more without spending a fortune. And, you’ll also become a de facto member of the teardrop trailer community, so look out for trailer gatherings around the nation, even the globe.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
BY COLIN ANDERSON
Tranquility in the Water THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT the sound of rushing water that soothes us to our core. A beachfront oasis next to the ocean, the waves subtly crashing against the shore helping us fall into a deep sleep. Camping along a mountain stream with its steady trickle helping to mute the sound of sticks crackling and animals scurrying around the campsite. Think of the last time you went to a spa for a massage or other treatment. Was there a water feature near the entrance? It’s one of the most natural sounds to help our minds calm thought as we start to turn off stresses of work, family and finances. The plethora of rivers and streams across the Northwest give us opportunities to enjoy one of the most tranquil of water activities; casting a fly in hopes of seeing a fish rise. Casting a fly is unlike any other form of fishing. The cast must be delicate, yet sent with enough force to reach the eddy or rock
on the opposite side of the river. Rhythmic motion while keeping the rod at ten o’clock and two o’clock. And when you make that perfect cast with the fly delicately dropping to the water, it’s an amazing feeling, almost as amazing as bringing in a large trout on a lightweight rod. The diversity of our rivers is vast across the Northwest. Western Montana is well known for Blue Ribbon waters holding monster Browns and Rainbows. Anglers across North Idaho seek out feisty Westslope cutthroat and in the fall aggressive Dolly Varden or Bull Trout. Huge runs of Steelhead challenge anglers in Central Idaho, the Washington coast and the rivers of West and Central Oregon. Each species requires varying tactics, and if you’re new to the sport, the best place to begin the learning process is your local fly shop.

Fly shops are run by people who’ve made their favorite activity into a business and most are eager to share their passion for the sport with those looking to get involved. As with many sports, you can gear up as technical and expensive as you want, but looking like you just got done modeling for a Cabela’s or L.L. Bean catalog won’t help you with the most important part of fly fishing − the cast. Rod/Reel: Fly rods can cost more than a thousand dollars, but there are plenty of wellconstructed beginner and intermediate rods in the $200 to $300 range. This is your most important purchase as a good rod gives you control of the presentation and is the key component to accurate casting. Until you’ve progressed into an every weekend angler, a reel is mostly just a reel, so put your budget toward the rod, and worry about the reel later on. If you’re going after Rainbow, Brown, cutthroat, or bookies, a 4 or 6-weight fly rod will probably be your best option, but let the fly shop owners know in what rivers you’ll be fishing will help them narrow down a weight and length that will be right for you.
Flies: One of the trickier parts of learning to fly fish is getting the hatch right. There’s not a more frustrating sight than watching fish rise toward your fly only to turn away just as they are about to break the surface. Trout eat bugs, and different bugs hatch at different times of the season. Some days the fish are looking for tiny gnats to nibble on and others they’re gorging themselves on jumbo hoppers or mayflies. It’s a good idea to have a variety of bugs as well as larger and smaller sizes of each. Local shops will let you know what hatch is currently happening and can point you to what bugs to use. When out of the water, try to snatch what’s buzzing around you, and pick a fly that closely resembles it. Gear: Hat, sunglasses, pliers and a multi tool are must haves. Polarized lenses will help cut glare off the water allowing you to see your fly much easier. A vest for carrying these things as well as flies, food, drink and net is also highly recommended. If you’re casting from a raft or drift boat, waders are unnecessary, and depending on your tolerance of cold water aren’t always necessary in the warm summer months either. Sturdy boots or river shoes that

can get wet will help you navigate to and from the river and keep your balance on slippery rocks. Casting classes or demonstrations are usually available at your local fly shop. Once you’ve got the pattern down, practice at home in the yard. Set up a small target at varying distances, and see if you can land your fly on a Frisbee or dinner plate. Move your position to under trees and near shrubs as you will likely encounter these things along the banks of your favorite river, and it’s good to practice so you don’t spend all day digging your hooks out of the brush. While there are countless rivers to explore across the west, perhaps you’re not looking to spend the entire week fishing, but a day or two on the water over a family vacation. The following are great vacation spots that give you close access to excellent nearby waters. Montana: Kalispell/Whitefish: On the doorstep of Glacier National Park, a beautiful area filled with

Relax incredible scenery. Golf, hiking, huckleberry picking, and plenty of logging and railroad history to explore. Bozeman: Just 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, Bozeman blends high end shopping and dining with cowboys and ranchers. Several of Montana’s blue ribbon trout streams lie within 90 minutes of downtown. Missoula: Farmer’s markets, biking, paddling and a laid back vibe greet you in Missoula. Those who don’t want to fish can plop themselves in a tube and float the Clark Fork or Blackfoot while you chase huge Browns to the south in the Bitterroot Valley. Idaho: Coeur d’Alene: Relax in a vacation rental along Lake Coeur d’Alene or Hayden Lake, and enjoy small town charm. Try the Coeur d’Alene River or one of dozens of mountain lakes that dot the peaks. Take a trip over to the Shadowy St. Joe for amazing cutthroat action with few homes and barely a speck of a town along its banks. McCall: Another Idaho lake town that offers nature in
any direction. Steelhead runs heat up in September in the rivers surrounding town and gives you a chance to reel in a monster fish. Washington: Longview: A great base of operations for visiting the Oregon coast towns of Astoria and Cannon Beach as well as a short drive into Portland for big city experience. The Cowlitz River is world renowned for its spring Chinook fishing and summer steelhead runs but fish are abundant year round. San Juan Islands: A beautiful place to island hop and explore small and quaint communities, kayak and hike out to incredible ocean vistas. All the surrounding water means ample angling opportunities. Parking yourself in a stream and pitting yourself against a picky fish will test your patience but even if the fish aren’t biting, the sound of the water rushing around you is sure to help put you at peace. A new challenge in each body of water and season awaits and with each cast you are hopefully developing a love for this tranquil lifelong activity.

It’s a given that obesity is one of the biggest health issues that currently face our world. It’s an epidemic. Coconuts can help. So what are you waiting for? Whether it is coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk or just plain coconut, explore the benefits!
For anyone who is trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, chocolate is one of the first things to cut from their diet. But don’t be so quick to do so! It has been shown that dark chocolate, in moderation, can be a healthy ingredient to your diet.

WHILE COCONUT MAY be a staple in the diets of many who live in the tropics and subtropics, it may not be as familiar to those in our area. But its versatility, which includes food, water and even cosmetics, has caused coconuts in many forms to increase in popularity.
Research shows that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in chocolate may lower your risk of heart attack and stroke considerably. So next time you crave a piece of dark chocolate, don’t be afraid to indulge!

GALLOPING GERTIE HALF MARATHON
Challenge yourself among the beautiful surroundings of the scenic Galloping Gertie Half Marathon By Jani Gonzalez MARATHON SATURDAY, AUGUST 13! This picturesque course promises spectacular views as you cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge not once but twice! The race begins in Uptown Gig Harbor; runners run across the Narrows Bridge into Tacoma and loop back across the bridge back into town. If 13 miles isn’t in your future, aim for the 10K or the 5K Fun Run/Walk, though these two races do not cross the bridge. The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge is infamous for collapsing into the Puget Sound back in November of 1940. It already had the nickname of the “Galloping Gertie” given by workers during its construction because of how it shook in all directions. At the time, it was the third longest suspension bridge in the world at just over a mile in length. Today, the bridge is a beautiful scenic pass. A drop and a steep and steady climb on the bridge are the biggest challenges in the course. The race is brought to you by the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor North which benefits the Peninsula and Gig Harbor high schools, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Food Banks 4 Kids. This is the first year proceeds will include the high schools. The money will be used at the schools’ discretion for prom, awards and functions. Come out and support your community in fundraising for these well worthwhile institutions. Or, find out how you can volunteer. Registration is ongoing up until race day. Come enjoy some pizza and pick up your pre-race packet at Pizzeria Fondi August 12 from noon until 6pm or in the Galaxy Theater Lobby on race day beginning at 6:30am in the Uptown Shopping Center at Gig Harbor Plaza. Visit galloping-gertie.com for more information. Come out and run to support your local charities and enjoy the view!
