PUBLISHER Make Lifelong Memories IT WAS NOT THAT LONG AGO that we were taking out the patio furniture from storage and planning our activities for the summer months. Suddenly we find ourselves facing back-to-school shopping, moving kids to college and wondering where the summer went. Take this month to truly get all you can out of the rest of summer. Plan gatherings with friends, take the kids on daytime excursions or even plan a long weekend to get away and enjoy the sunshine and outdoors. In the Pacific Northwest, we are so fortunate to have a multitude of opportunities around us. Beautiful mountains to hike, lakes and the Puget Sound to recreate and festivals to celebrate are just some of the activities in our own backyards. Do you enjoy music? Check out the concerts going on in our area. Enjoy a show by Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald at the Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville or one of the concerts at Sandpoint’s Festival at Sandpoint the first two weeks in August. There is something for everyone. If you have kids who love to explore, consider the Seattle Aquarium or the Woodland Park Zoo in the Seattle area or venture to Silverwood Theme Park just north of Coeur d’Alene. Take time to relax and enjoy life. The housework will still be there and the laundry may pile up a bit, but the memories you will make are something that will last forever.

CONNECT THE GIG REDESIGNING OUR CITY STREETS
THE CITY OF GIG HARBOR is currently reimagining its transportation plan, and you are invited to take part in the process! The first two public workshops took place in June and were named “pop-up studios.” On June 22, the public was invited to join a pop-up at the Waterfront Farmers Market. The following day, participants met at the Uptown Shopping Center Pavilion. If you missed the opportunity, don’t worry as there are more public workshops on the horizon. The city has named the effort “Connect the Gig.” This initiative will update the Comprehensive Plan Transportation Element while also creating our city’s first non-motorized plan (also called all-modes or multi-modal plan.) According to Fehr & Peers, who completed a recent city-wide existing conditions assessment of our local transportation network, Gig Harbor will need to become less auto-oriented and create more nonmotorized options to provide a truly multimodal network.

FUTURE BUILD ENVIRONMENT
The Westside CoLI is zoned for our highest intensity commercial development, such as theaters, grocery stores, medical facilities and more. In the Kimball area, we move to a higher density residential zone that includes Tacoma Community College, our Civic Center, the park and ride, as well as hotels.
The report states that our future transportation system will need to be: • Inviting and equitable, encouraging public health through active transportation • Smart, efficient and achievable • Effective in connecting the CoLIs to the regional transportation system • Sustainable over time, both financially and environmentally
• Understood by the community It is essential that regional partners, residents, employees and visitors collaborate to in this process. To truly understand and take part in this effort, one needs to comprehend the terminology. Within city limits, we have five Centers of Local Importance, referred to as CoLIs: Westside, Kimball, Downtown, Finholm and Gig Harbor North.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
22
Downtown is the central place for gathering during seasonal events, enjoying year-round small merchant shops, gaining access to the water, trails and seasonal transit. Around the corner in Finholm, we find a smaller area with restaurants and retail and some single-family homes. Gig Harbor North is zoned to be a commercial hub for larger retailers, including home to our hospital, YMCA and higher density singlefamily residential developments. As part of this effort, a company named Transportation Solutions, Inc. analyzed more than 70 intersections during peak evening
hours. Four of the 72 intersections analyzed did not meet the current LOS standard. LOS refers to level of service; grades represent wait times according to the degree of congestion at an intersection or roundabout. Not to worry, in the Gig Harbor 2017-2022 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), these four intersections have already been identified as upcoming projects.

affordable adaptable alternative housing
Would you like to know what the first pop-up studio ideas and thoughts were?
This initiative will update the Comprehensive Plan Transportation Element while also creating our city’s first non-motorized plan (also called all-modes or multimodal plan.)
A waterfront couplet might be a good solution! According to the Connect the Gig website, two proposals emerged from the pop-shops as potential solutions to relieve traffic and make room for all-modes downtown. A couplet is simply a pair of two one-way streets. The first proposal is to adapt Soundview, Harborview, Pioneer and Judson to work as a large circuit in either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. The second proposal would adapt Harborview, Rosedale and Stinson into a oneway traffic route. What are your thoughts on our current and future-built environment? Want to be more involved in generating ideas to redesign our streets? Check out ConnectTheGig.com to find out more, keep up to date and learn of future opportunities for your voice to be heard.

YOUR MASTER BEDROOM CREATE AN OASIS IN YOUR HOME BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER
Come celebrate life on the water. Board the only authentic Venetian gondola in the Pacific Northwest and let the stress melt away.
PEACE, TRANQUILITY, SERENITY … these are words that make your shoulders relax, your eyelids heavy and have you picturing yourself in a quiet oasis. I imagine low lights, the smell of essential oils, my body the perfect temperature and in a state of relaxation in peaceful surroundings. This is also how your master bedroom should be; your oasis in your own home that you can escape to for some peace and quiet to shut the world out.

To evoke this comfort, your bedroom should be painted in relaxing neutral colors. No bold energizing red, orange or bright yellows belong in the bedroom. Monotone colors are OK—use softened blues, greens and earth tones of tans and creams. Rule of thumb with decorating a bedroom: The headboard wall is usually the accent wall. If you are going to do any accent colors or hang artwork, vacation photos and so on, the headboard wall is where you want to do it. Lighting needs to be ambient lighting with minimal task lighting, such as bedside lamps for reading. You should have easy control of lights so you don’t have to get up to turn them on or off. Dimmers are a good idea so you can control the level of lighting and the brightness in the room. No harsh textures. Glitter and polished shiny surfaces do not belong in the bedroom. Think of natural settings that bring you peace and incorporate those textures into your bedding, wall coverings, window coverings and flooring. If you have a hard surface in your bedroom such as wood or tile, use a large area rug. This rug should be alongside the bed so feet have a soft landing pad every morning. (This will also help with the acoustics.)
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Invest in a good bed. You spend a lot of time here. Make sure that it fits your body and provides the support and comfort that you need to get a good night’s sleep so you can awake feeling relaxed and energized. Scent also contributes to your emotional state. Give your bedroom a fresh smell; no harsh perfumes or incense that linger in the air. Keep it clean and light—lavender, linen and rose are relaxing scents that aren’t too heavy. If your bedroom has a lot going on now, simplify. Declutter, clean and put away items. Minimize furniture and accessories. Laptops, televisions and phones are things we may look to when there is downtime and we are getting ready for bed. You start scrolling through and then realize two hours later that you are still no closer to being relaxed than you were when you started. Keep these items to a minimum in the bedroom. They tend to stimulate your mind and thus are counterproductive to you being able to relax. Most bedrooms should err on the side of being more masculine than feminine. By this, I mean don’t go over the top with lace, frilly layers of bedding, shams and pillows. By keeping things simple, clean, smelling good and low-key, you will be relaxing in no time.
WILL YOU BE PREPARED WHEN THE MARKET COOLS OFF? WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BY CHERI JOHNSON, FINANCIAL ADVISOR, STRATEGIC WEALTH ADVISORS
S TA N D A PA R T
WE HAVE SEEN A TREMENDOUS rally on Wall Street, nearly nine months long, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average repeatedly settling at alltime peaks. Investors are delighted by what they have witnessed. Have they become irrationally exuberant? The major indices do not always rise. That obvious fact risks becoming “back of mind” these days. On June 15, the Nasdaq Composite was up 27.16 percent year-over-year and 12.67 percent in the past six months. The S&P 500 was up 17.23 percent in a year and 7.31 percent in six months. Performance like that can breed overconfidence in equities. The S&P last corrected at the beginning of 2016, and a market drop may seem like a remote possibility now. Then again, corrections usually arrive without much warning. You may want to ask yourself: “Am I prepared for one? Are you mentally prepared? Corrections have been rare in recent years. There have only been four in this eight-year bull market. So, it is easy to forget how frequently they have occurred across Wall Street’s long history (they have normally happened about once a year). The next correction may shock investors who have been lulled into a false sense of security. It will not be the end of the world or the markets. A correction, in a sense, is a reality check. It presents some good buying opportunities and helps tame irrational exuberance. You could argue that corrections make the market healthier. In bigpicture terms, the typical correction is brief. On average, the markets take three to four months to recover from a fall of at least 10 percent. Are you in touch with your situation?
You can stand apart from their ranks by appropriately checking up on, and diversifying, your portfolio as needed. Thanks to the recent rally, many investors have seen their equity positions grow larger, perhaps too large. If you are one of them (and you may be), you may want to try to dial down your risk exposure. Do you know your risk number? Do you have an adequate emergency fund? A correction is not quite an emergency, but it is nice to have a strong cash position when the market turns sour. Are your retirement and estate plans current? A prolonged slump on Wall Street could impact both. Many older baby boomers had to rethink their retirement strategies in the wake of the 2007-2009 bear market.
Your Life. Your Goals. Our Focus. While developing a personalized financial plan for you, Cheri Johnson Strategic Wealth Advisors LLC will walk you through a step-by-step planning process designed to give you confidence in Your Life decisions. Once your objectives have been established, we will help you customize appropriate strategies to pursue Your Goals. Then we’ll will help you build a financial plan keeping Our Focus on you and utilizing strategic solutions to address: • • • • • •
Tax Management Investment Management Income Strategies Social Security Maximization Estate Conservation Legacy Planning
Finally, a deep dip in the equity market should not stop you from consistently funding your retirement accounts. In a downturn, your account contributions, in essence, buy greater amounts of shares belonging to quality companies than they would otherwise. A correction will happen—maybe not tomorrow, maybe not for the rest of 2017, but at some point, a retreat will take place. React to it with patience or else you may end up selling low and buying high. Cheri Johnson may be reached at 253.858.4411 or cheri@strategicwealthadv.com. BECAUSE ONE GREAT QUESTION ISN’T ENOUGH ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK
BY DEBORAH OLIVE, BUSINESS/LIFE COACH
THOUGHTFUL QUESTIONS
IT’S SUMMER IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, and the sparkling waters, blue skies, snow-capped mountains and extended sunlight beckon us outdoors. As we head to the water for a day trip, the hills and mountains for a hike, visit a summer festival or start the grill for a backyard barbecue, we tend to bring our family, friends and colleagues with us. Now is our time for recreation and connection.
Have you ever rolled your eyes when preparing for a family gathering? Perhaps you’re thinking about what you already know about them. What if you consider what you don’t know about them? This actually puts you in an elite group of people. George Bernard Shaw said, “The only sane person I know is my tailor. He measures me anew every time he sees me.”
What do you do to build great connections with the people you’re spending time with?
What if you arrive with a few questions that uncover the other person’s interests? Wouldn’t that make a more interesting approach?
Did you expect me to ask a question? Questions shift the energy, don’t they? And that’s the point. When you spend time with others, do you tend to ask questions or drop into a topic you’re interested in and start talking? In general, we build better connections when we arrive with a healthy curiosity and ask questions—in other words, when we take a genuine interest in the other person.
A number of years ago, I spent a few days snow skiing near Lake Tahoe with one of my mentors. A musician we both knew was also visiting the area, and he invited us to dinner. During our drive to the restaurant, Mary and I shared our experiences with this musician. We both admired the way he drew his audience into the stories he wove through his music and the brilliant way he choreographed images to his music. Drawn into the story, I was about to add my experience of his music when Mary shifted the conversation. “What are three or four questions you’d like to ask him?” I paused. Nothing came to mind. She offered a question— about his brother. Then she asked another, and it spurred my curiosity. What would I like to know?

By the time we parked the car in front of the restaurant, both of us had three or four questions. She said, “Once we ask a question or two, the evening will just flow. We won’t need all of our questions. You’ll see.” And she was right. We had a wonderful, easy and fun evening filled with laughter and sweet surprises. That evening I experienced the joy that erupts from thoughtful and well-placed questions. So I bring a few thoughtful questions to gatherings with family and friends, and it’s made a tremendous difference.

What if asking the right questions is the key to unlocking the life you want?
Would you go for it?
“The quality of your life is a reflection of the quality of questions you ask.” Asking questions works well not only in your personal life, but also in business. The entrepreneur or small-business owner who’s curious about people often discovers a need that will turn them into a customer, client or friend. Thoughtful questions pinpoint the areas of frustration so the business owner can pinpoint their solutions for clients or customers. When talking with other business owners, questions reveal areas of mutual interest and the potential to collaborate.
Unleash your potential through the power of professional coaching
“I believe that you can go BIG without burnout and that when you dare to go to the edge of the life you’ve known and step beyond its borders, what you discover is a way of being that delivers results beyond your wildest dreams.”
Have you ever attended a networking event and wondered what to talk about? A few thoughtful questions make the experience easier and way more fun. What would you like to know about someone when you meet them? Why not discover what they’re most passionate about? Learn about their journey to success or what they’re interested in now. You can ask questions like, “Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently when you started?” Or “What’s on your reading list?” Or “How did you get started doing what you do?” The possibilities are endless.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL
CELEBRATING A DECADE OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE
PHOTO COURTESY OF TOM TAYLOR FAMILY YMCA
Tom Taylor Family YMCA holds anniversary party. By Patty Hutchens
FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS, the Tom Taylor Family YMCA has been making life better for those in our community. From contributing free memberships for foster-care children to offering classes such as Safety Around Water, the YMCA has been a place where individuals connect, children thrive and people are empowered.
During the festivity, which is open to all including non-members and for which there is no admission fee, there will be no joining fees all day long, making it a great time to become part of this wonderful community of members. The YMCA was renamed the Tom Taylor Family YMCA in March 2013 to honor the generosity of Gig Harbor resident and YMCA member and donor, Tom Taylor, for his significant and ongoing contributions to the Gig Harbor Family YMCA.
An organization that focuses on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, it is the goal of the YMCA to build a strong spirit, mind and body. In celebration of its decade-long presence in our community, Tom Taylor Family YMCA will host a community-wide celebration Friday, August 18, at 6pm at their facility. They will close at 5pm so they can prepare for the party, which promises to be fun for the entire family.
If you have never been to the Tom Taylor Family YMCA or if you are a longtime member, come and celebrate their 10-year anniversary August 18!
The Shy Boys will kick off the celebration at 6pm, and there will be food trucks from GNOSH, P & J’s Waffle Delight and Yakashoot Ice Cream, as well as activities for the kids.

ADVANCED REGISTERED nurse practitioner (ARNP) Scot Fleshman and his wife, Jessica, are determined to bring a new type of patient-centered health care to town. The young couple, both Gig Harbor natives, recently opened Rainier Family Medicine, a primary care family medicine clinic located in the Gig Harbor Corporate Center, next to Uptown Gig Harbor and across the street from the local library. A privately owned medical clinic dedicated to spending as much time with each patient as may be necessary to promote health and wellbeing, Rainier Family Medicine offers a wide variety of services—even same-day sick visits—which range from sports physicals to wellness exams, chronic disease management to immunizations, preventative care to acute illness treatment, and more. “What we like to think makes us different is that we operate a truly patient-centric care model,” noted Fleshman in a recent interview, “rejecting the typical pattern of too many of today’s medical office visits.” Patients often feel they are being talked ‘at’ rather than engaging in a meaningful conversation, according to Fleshman, who received his advanced post-graduate nursing degree from Vanderbilt University. With industry standards steadily moving toward shorter appointment times, he added, patients feel they are being ‘processed’ rather than treated. The city’s newest ARNP thinks there is a better way to practice medicine, and he has
been trained to do just that. (For the record, ARNPs bring a comprehensive perspective to health care, blending clinical, evidence-based expertise with advanced skills in diagnosing and treating health conditions—adding an emphasis on disease prevention and health management. They are increasingly recognized as critical members of the nation’s health-care delivery team, providing prompt access and highly skilled medical advice to patients and families across the country.) By contrast to current norms, Rainier Family Medicine gets patients into the office virtually immediately and books longer appointment times for each person. “Having extended conversations allows me to really get to know my patients and enhances my ability to treat the whole person, not just his or her current ailment,” the 1997 Peninsula High School graduate explained. “We want patients to know they are valued and being listened to when they visit Rainier Family Medicine. We care about the experience each patient has with us, from the time they call to make an appointment to after-appointment follow-up. This fosters a team approach to health, a crucial first step in helping each and every patient achieve optimal health.” Fleshman tells the story of one of his nursing school mentors, a genuine “old-school doctor” who practiced his craft for nearly 50 years and shared this bit of wisdom: “If you give patients enough time to really talk to you, they will tell you what is wrong with them.” “The message sounds simple, but it’s quite
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

profound,” mused Fleshman, “and it’s something that has fundamentally influenced how I care for my patients.” Meet the Provider: Rainier Family Medicine recognizes that establishing care with a new medical provider can be stressful. Often, a person doesn’t know if s/he will have a good rapport with the provider until after a first appointment. Prospective patients can eliminate their concerns by scheduling a no-obligation “get to know us” session. In addition, interested persons can visit the office website at RainierFamilyMedicine.com, call the office at 253.432.4437, check out the Rainier Family Medicine Facebook page, or simply stop in to say hello.

GOOD NEWS Cider Swig returns for its fourth year

WHEN YOU COMBINE a great event with an opportunity to benefit your community, you cannot go wrong. That is exactly what the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is doing with its Fourth Annual Cider Swig: The Great Peninsula Cider Festival. Taking place on Saturday, September 30, at Sehmel Homestead Park, there will be nearly three-dozen regional cidermakers, a majority from the Northwest, on hand to share nearly 100 hard cider varieties. But this event is not just for adults; there will be apple-themed games and kids’ activities in the Apple Carnivale Zone along with food and live music. And to kick off the festivities, there will be a Gourmet Cider Makers Dinner on the evening of September 29. While all this is reason enough to attend the event, this is also a great opportunity to benefit local environmental education and restoration products. Over the course of the last few years, the Cider Swig has donated more than $20,000 to support environmental education in parks, natural areas and trails around the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula communities. Each year, the largest donation has been made to the Lu Winsor Environmental Grant Program, which is administered by the Key Peninsula-Gig
Harbor-Islands (KGI) Watershed Council. For over a decade, the Lu Winsor program has made an impact on our local students by helping them experience science workshops in the classroom, participate in restoration projects and attend local environmental education camps. Since the Lu Winsor program began, both Peninsula Light Company and Pierce County Shellfish Partners have each contributed $5,000 to the grant on an annual basis. When Cider Swig first began in 2014, there were 12 cidermakers, and the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation contributed $2,500 to the grant program and also donated grants to PenMet Parks and Curious by Nature School. With the growing popularity of the Cider Swig the following year, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation was able to increase its donation to $5,000. Last year, the foundation awarded the Lu Winsor program with $7,500; a contribution that was met with an additional match of $2,500 from Pierce County, making the total amount of the award $20,000. Dr. Julie Gustanski is the chair of the Cider Swig and hopes to continue to increase the contribution year after year. “We feel strongly

that Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula residents value these programs for our children and will spend a fun-filled day enjoying craft ciders and helping us meet our goal of a $10,000 donation to the Lu Winsor Environmental Grant Program in 2017,” said Gustanski, who first came up with the idea of the Cider Swig in late 2012 when she was flying back from the East Coast and happened to read an inflight magazine article on the renaissance of cider in the United States. “The Foundation’s Parks & Environment CAB [Core Area Board], of which I am a member, was trying to come up with something new and different that could help to raise critical funds to support a variety of parks and environmentoriented initiatives across our greater Gig Harbor and Key peninsula community,” said Gustanski. “The Parks & Environment CAB met within days of my return from this trip, so while the idea was fresh in my mind, I proposed the concept. And the rest is history.” So just exactly where does the money go? According to the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation, proceeds from the 2016 Cider Swig focused on environmental education programs and supported the following projects:

The grant requests were close to $30,000 in 2016, and they expect it to reach at least that amount this year. In addition to Cider Swig, the community foundation works to meet the diverse needs of the greater Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula communities. The Foundation holds a handful of events each year, which help to provide financial support for a variety of things in our community. “Since its founding in 2006, the nonprofit organization has invested more than $4.9 million in grants, scholarships, land, equipment and volunteer labor into our community to address some of the community’s most pressing needs,” said Gustanski.
Over the course of the last few years, the Cider Swig has donated more than $20,000 to support environmental education in parks, natural areas and trails around the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula communities. By purchasing a ticket to the Fourth Annual Cider Swig, you can help support more Lu Winsor projects. Advanced purchase tickets are only $27, or you can purchase tickets at the gate for $35. Each ticket includes five drink tokens and a festival glass, and extra tokens will also be available for purchase at the event. Admission is free to all festival areas except the Cider Garden sponsored by Uptown Gig Harbor and the cider sales tent, where entrants must be 21 to enter (ID required). Misfortune inspires creation of new nonprofit By Colin Anderson
Maintaining a used vehicle is vital to keeping it running efficiently.
ONE RIDE CAN CHANGE A LIFE INSPIRATION OFTEN COMES AT STRANGE TIMES, and those who are truly inspired can almost always pinpoint the exact moment that changed their lives forever. For longtime Gig Harbor resident and auto-shop owner Howard Mackert, that moment was when he heard that someone he reached out to help had ended up back in jail. “It broke my heart,” said Howard. “If only she had a dependable car she would be out and still improving her life.” Howard’s story begins at a Friday morning rotary club meeting, something he’s been going to for more than a decade. One of the group’s trademark programs was created by Buck Frymier, who wanted to do something to help reduce the 70 percent of women who end up back in prison at Purdy after their initial arrest. Frymier and other volunteers teach women currently in the corrections center on resume building,

interview etiquette, how to explain to potential employers about their incarceration and other skills to better their chances of landing a job once released. At this particular meeting, it was brought to Howard’s attention that a local woman found employment but did not have reliable transportation. “I had just gotten my wife a newer 4Runner, and her old Blazer with 272,000 miles on it had become my shop vehicle. I figured this young woman could borrow it as I really didn’t need it around,” said Howard. The Blazer got the young woman to work several times, but one morning it wouldn’t start and her roommate was unable to drive her. The roommate found a ride for her but during that trip the driver decided to do a drug deal and they were busted. A judge didn’t believe the young woman’s story that she was just trying to get to work and she was sent back to Purdy for another 18 months, away from her 2-yearold daughter. “A vehicle is really a basic necessity here, and you can’t get a job without a car and can’t get a car without a job,” said Howard. His mind started turning, and when he came across a program a friend in Denver came up with in which many donated cars were given to new mothers at a pregnancy clinic, he thought to himself, ‘Hey, I can do that here.’ The idea of Cars for Change was born, and today the organization is just a few small steps away from becoming a reality. Cars for Change is a program in which Howard, along with other local volunteers and shop owners Brian Smith of Gig Harbor Auto Service and Brian Reid of Parker’s Service, will be providing good, clean running vehicles to women in need of reliable transportation. These include recently released inmates looking for employment, single mothers, widows or even women who might be buried in medical bills and might not be able to get to necessary medical appointments. When Howard approached his rotary friends about turning the idea into a fully fledged 501c3 nonprofit, the group was impressed and generously donated $2,000 to help cover much of the cost of creation. Local attorney Paul Alvestad is also volunteering his time to put the necessary paperwork together. Three vehicles have already been donated to the cause including a Dodge pickup and a Lexus SUV. Howard will be selling these donated vehicles so he can purchase lowmaintenance and reliable four-door family cars like Toyota Camrys and Corollas. Though not fully formed yet, Howard can already see the community ready to embrace his idea. “Just about every time I share it with the community, someone comes up to me and tells me they have a car they can donate or that their company will match cash donations. It’s been really neat.”
FOR THOSE LOOKING TO TURN THEIR LIVES AROUND, RETURN TO EMPLOYMENT AND PROVIDE A BETTER UPBRINGING FOR THEIR FAMILY, A RELIABLE VEHICLE IS PARAMOUNT TO THEIR SUCCESS.

Cars for Change will be putting together and donating vehicles on a quarterly basis. Shop owners and volunteers will come together on specified days and tune up the automobiles so they are all ready to go at once. There will be ample opportunities in the future for community members to take part, and Howard hopes to also partner with local high schools so teens interested in learning mechanic work can get hands-on experience while also benefiting those less fortunate
in their communities. A five-person board is already formed, and Cars for Change hopes to get around 30 cars out into the community in the first year. The program is getting help in vetting individuals in need from local churches and established organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and various shelters throughout the South Sound.
With 16 years of trust built up at his shop Mackert Automotive, Howard feels he’s landed in a perfect time to really get the organization off and running. “It feels like the perfect storm. My business runs itself, I now have the time to commit to this, I have connections in the community and the wherewithal to make it happen,” he said. “It feels really good to help somebody, and honestly, I’ll probably get more satisfaction out of it than they [the recipients] will.” For those looking to turn their lives around, return to employment and provide a better upbringing for their family, a reliable vehicle is paramount to their success. Cars for Change is dedicated to getting these reliable vehicles into the hands of deserving women and ultimately improving lives and an already incredible community.

Maintaining a used vehicle is vital to keeping it running efficiently, and the organization will continue to do so even after the vehicle is donated. Quarterly oil changes will be provided at no charge. “I’d rather donate an oil change and keep the car running smoothly than be rebuilding the engine or looking for new transmissions,” said Howard. Vehicle owners will be responsible for fuel and liability insurance costs, and the group hopes to have the first donated vehicles hit the road by this fall. Those who choose to donate a vehicle will receive a tax benefit for doing so, giving even more incentive for the community to participate. Donations will need to be running and in good order so they can either be tuned up with no major overhauls or resold so Cars for Change can purchase additional reliable cars. Interested donors can get in contact with the organization through its temporary email
address, cars4change1@gmail.com. A website and additional contact information is currently being formed.

living local Harbor Summer in the ‘60s A look back in time.
By Toni Gibbs
WE NEVER HAD MUCH DOWN TIME COME JUNE. Once school was out, we kept busy with berry picking, babysitting, swimming in our pool or horseback riding the trails near our home on Hunt Street. All the neighborhood kids took swimming lessons in our backyard pool, and I took life-saving class in the summer of my junior year, 1965. My friends loved coming to my house, and almost every summer we had our Aunt Jan, who was the same age as me, come stay for a few weeks. We sewed summer shifts in the basement and went for evening swims after dark in the pool. If we could get the car, we usually said we were going to the movies but headed out for Tacoma, crossing the Narrows Bridge and “Cruising the Ave.” looking for the boys in Tacoma. Back then, Gig Harbor was little known, and when in Tacoma, you mentioned you lived in Gig Harbor, you usually got, “Where is that?” Bridge toll was 50 cents for car and driver and 10 cents per passenger. Gasoline was 50 cents a gallon and we would use our babysitting money to load up the tank so Mom and Dad would never know. The only gas station on this side of the bridge was Ken Marvin’s Shell right off Highway 16 down near the current Wollochet Drive exit. Interstate 16 was a two-lane road, with very few cars, and we hardly ever saw a car on the road after 9pm.
The biggest treat during summer was to attend Bellarmine all school dances in the gym each Saturday night. We went to see Merrilee and the Turnabouts or Paul Revere and the Raiders, and many other local bands, to dance and meet boys. After the dances, a group of us would go to Bush’s Drive-In on 6th Avenue where milk shakes, hot fudge sundaes and french fries ‘n’ gravy were standard fare delivered to the car by car hops on roller skates who attached a tray to the car window and collected your money. Dairy Queen, Arctic Circle and

Frisco Freeze were the hangouts on 6th Avenue for teens in summer. I was the oldest of six children and the first one to get a car under the pretense I had a parttime job starting in my senior year. My father liked to go to the drags (drag races). He purchased a 1940 Chevrolet Coupe, black with metallic blue bucket seats, Mag wheels, a Corvette engine, and headers for drag racing. It was this car I was given to drive to school every day in order to leave school early for work. What were the parents thinking? It was

a gas guzzler but the envy of every boy in the senior class. I was only allowed to drive it to work and back, but of course that was just too much temptation for a senior in high school. It wasn’t long before I started getting the car on Saturday nights to go “to the movies” and ended up drag racing on 6th Avenue. I usually had a few girlfriends along goading me to open the headers. We would end up facing off at the light on 6th and Pearl with the Wilson High School boys in their cars right alongside. Leaving them in the dust was no problem

and they were left wondering what I had under the hood and trying to find out who the girl was driving the black Chevy Coupe. In the ‘60s, we shopped Downtown Gig Harbor at the Dime Store where Kelly’s is currently. The Dime Store had wooden flooring, very basic bench-style shopping platforms like tables set up where fabric, patterns, makeup, home-care items, buttons, thread, belts, socks, etc., could be found. Penny candy was always on the agenda. We could get gum drops, licorice, taffy, Big Hunk candy bars, Snickers, Mars, cool pops and ice cream bars. This was the first stop when we came to town, then we headed up to Keith Uddenberg’s grocery store at the Thriftway shopping center on Judson Street to grocery shop. Thriftway bakery always did our birthday cakes, and the muffin bread was the main squeeze. These were the days when the owner, Keith himself, came to relieve the cashiers when busy and would visit with his customers knowing them on first-name basis. We loaded up the entire back end of the white Pontiac station wagon with food and would come back for more in a week.
Fandell’s Clothing Store was the next stop if you needed anything in the way of clothing or shoes. Rexall Drugs was next to that and then the Post Office. The liquor store was in the building where Suzanne’s Deli is. Finholm’s was the meat market where my family purchased all their meat and fish. It is where the current grocery is now in the Finholm Market Place.

The current Sea Hag shop and the entire building was Knapp’s Auto Repair, and in high school I would take my car there to my friend Claudia’s dad, Rolland Knapp, to be checked and oil changed out for a great price. He was a jovial guy, loved to talk to us kids and always good for a laugh and a bottle of pop, orange soda or a coke. Chewing gum and talking at the same time was a habit of teenagers. Our gum of choice was Juicy Fruit, Black Jack, Clove or Beeman’s. Scandia Guard sat on the top of Peacock Hill where there is currently a professional building on the

property. This was a must-see place with everything you can imagine from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Slovenian countries. We purchased clogs, in red or blue, nice toweling, candles, Christmas ornaments, cards, fabric, aprons and many gift items including wrapping paper, cards, boxes and beautiful ribbons. It was a big white two- or three-story house that resembled a Scandinavian home; lots of bric-a-brac and charm with leaded windows. Poggie Bait was a shop that sold ice cream, sundaes, floats and food. It was in the building that Tickled Pink is in today. Poggie Bait was one of the hangouts for the young kids in town, and many happy memories of that particular shop remain today. Tides Tavern had always been in existence. It was not as it is today, smaller, and featured Three Fingered Jack, a
great entertainer who played on weekends to large crowds dancing on the current deck. Fishing was always the main industry in Gig Harbor, but the harbor was a harbor in the ‘60s not as it is today—a narrow channel where boats are parked at marinas taking up most of the harbor. Many kids in my class of ‘67 were from fishing families, leaving for summer to fish in Alaska and returning in fall. Our small class in 1967 had many graduates who went on to college, and some left the area entirely once they graduated. Our graduating class celebrates its 50year class reunion in August at the airport restaurant. No one locked their doors, and kids were free to walk the streets of Downtown Gig Harbor to fish, ride bicycles, wander and meet

up with friends on the fishing piers. The Harbor was a safe, clean town where everyone knew everyone, and in many ways that was wonderful, but it was also a bit too small town for some, and you only realized it when you moved away. Funny thing is that eventually you are drawn back to the place where it feels like home, and that is what the harbor feels like for many who grew up here. We lament the changes but yes, being discovered is hard on small towns everywhere. Sharing this wonderful community brings with it growing pains, but we hope to never lose the small-town charm that drew us here in the first place.

9ROUND 30 MINUTE Kickbox Fitness opened its doors in Gig Harbor this past October, and owner/operator Tim “The Torpedo” Olson introduced the community to a new specialized fitness center dedicated to serving clients who want a unique, fun and proven workout. At 9Round, members will discover a kickboxing-themed fitness program that incorporates functional, interval, cardiovascular and circuit-training regimens. The programs consist of a proprietary system of nine challenging workout stations developed by a professional fighter. The program incorporates dumb bells, kettle bells, medicine balls, jump ropes and other equipment to build strength and stamina, with trainers assisting you every round. Then there’s kickboxing; At 9Round you’ll get fit, not hit. Clients punch and kick heavy bags to build power, double-end bags to increase coordination and timing, and speed bags to develop shoulder conditioning and speed. As Tim says, “You’ll tighten and strengthen all the muscles in one of the most common trouble spots, your core, which improves your ability to perform any movement you do for work, exercise or leisure.” One of the most unique offerings at 9Round is the schedule—the no class time and 30-minute circuit training concept allows members to work out on their own terms, with a new 30-minute session beginning every three minutes. According to Tim, you can achieve maximum results and a complete, full-body workout in just 30 minutes through 9Round’s combination of cardio and resistance training. Workouts change daily, always challenging your body while the trainer keeps the training exciting and you engaged. Monthly membership also include access to 9Round Nutrition, a complete online nutritional site with Q & A support, a nutrition
guide, recipes, articles and more to help you get results faster. They even offer an online meal planner to make healthy eating simple, as well as videos to help track your progress and get you the results you want. “9Round Nutrition is eating the right foods, at the right times, in the right amounts,” affirms Tim. “Improving your body composition takes patience, persistence and consuming the right fuel.” 9Round offers its members a club where trainers know your name and are ready to guide, motivate and push you—through proven and current exercise science—to get the most from every workout. All trainers are certified through the 9Round University Training Program so each member gets a safe, challenging workout that brings results. And members and trainers are in good hands under Tim. A Certified 9R Trainer, Tim earned a Master’s degree in sport administration and Bachelors in community health education. Training in Olympic taekwondo and karate, Tim has twice placed 1st in the DC TKD Open. Prior to 9R, he worked as an athletic director, health educator and coached several years of football and basketball at both public and private high schools, including football at the University of Puget Sound. As a student athlete, Tim began kickboxing for conditioning and is a member of the Hall of Fame Central Washington University 2002 football team. Tim is grateful to own his own business right here in Gig Harbor. “It’s a marvelous place for us to live, raise kids and have a business in the fitness industry. There has been amazing community support; everyone makes health, wellness and nutrition a priority,” he says. “Uptown has been a wonderful location.” When it comes to what Tim finds most fulfilling about his job, he says, “It’s the awesome new relationships we’ve made since October, all through fitness and fun. … It’s very rewarding

being able to empower members to achieve their fitness goals, nine rounds at a time.” He attributes the success of his business to 9Round’s incredible group of hard-working and dedicated trainers, in addition to their fantastic members (ages 10 to 70 and of all abilities), who make Tim’s mission attainable. Not only is Tim active in providing the community a way to stay fit and healthy, he supports the local community through donations to local school fundraiser auctions and gives to the DREAM Auction to cure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). He is also a member of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. If you’re looking to try a fun new way to work out—with results—stop by 9Round, meet Tim and his trainers, and get moving. Just Breathe
By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor WHEN SOMEONE COMES INTO MY TRAINING facility for the first time, it can be for a number of reasons. They may have a specific goal to train for or they are unhappy in one or more ways with the current status quo of their life. They don’t like the way they perform, feel, behave, move, look or any number of issues, whether real or imaginary. Stress, work, school, life, have somehow gotten in their way of their performance or the quality of life they are seeking, and are looking to me for guidance. I get to see the initial change for the better they find on day one, and all I do is re-teach them how to … breathe; how to take in and release the air around them in a way that reduces stress, pain, fear and discomfort and increases health and happiness. I literally have the best job on the planet.
We’ll first talk about the opposite ends of the breathing spectrum. We have on one side clavicular (or shallow) breathing and on the other side we have diaphragmatic (or abdominal) breathing. The easiest way to tell is when you breathe in, do your shoulders rise while your stomach draws into your body or does your stomach expand with your inhale and draw in when you exhale with your shoulders remaining relaxed? If you typically practice the latter, you are in luck. Your breathing is great, and keep up the good work. You probably breathe purposefully and maybe even spend some well-deserved time meditating. On the other hand, if you can’t seem to figure out how to keep your shoulders from rising upon inhale, you may have some work to do.

Dr. Greg Messer Dr. Keri Messer So why should you care how deeply you breathe? Clavicular breathing draws only minimal oxygen into the lungs and can lead to a buildup of carbon dioxide. Many breathing and stress issues are exacerbated by this type of breathing. The diaphragm is closely connected to your sympathetic nervous system, which controls our fight or flight response. The shallower we breathe the more anxious and unsettled we become, and this takes a toll on our ability to adapt to stress and remain healthy. The longer we are in this state of habitual shallow breathing, the harder it becomes to breathe deep. All it takes is some daily practice to combat and reverse this cycle. Diaphragmatic breathing is one of our strongest self-healing mechanisms. It draws oxygen lower into the lungs which activates the parasympathetic nervous system (relax and recover). According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of deep breathing include but are not limited to: relieving physical muscle tension, increase oxygen to all cells, strengthens the lungs, slows our heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow to muscles and improves concentration. Taking time to breathe deeply and purposefully can easily be done within your daily life. It doesn’t have to
be done on its own. We can easily practice while driving (reducing road rage), brushing your teeth, bathing, before sleep or anytime talking is not necessary. Everyone has time to practice breathing. I can’t personally think of a downside. Now the how. If you have been shallow breathing for long enough, regaining the ability to breathe deeply will not be as automatic as you may think. If you have a few minutes, try lying on your back with one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach. Breathe in what you currently consider deep and see which of your hands moves the most. Now try and exhale at least a little bit deeper than you inhaled. Keep that up, trying each time to fill the belly with air while inhaling and contracting your abdominal muscles while exhaling, remembering to exhale a little more than you inhaled. This may prove to be difficult at first, but keep practicing. Eventually you should be able to relax your chest and breathe from the belly. Once it becomes easier, you can spend more practice time during your showers and car rides. You may decide to set aside some “me” time and just breathe. This is when life begins to get … better.

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH
FOOD FIGHT! CAN YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT YOUR DENTAL HEALTH?
BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I smoked. That was during the days when you “quit cold turkey” or nothing. So, I smoked myself sick on New Year’s Eve and never smoked again. But, I kept a pack of Marlboros in my bathroom for three years, just in case I wanted one. I don’t know what you’ve found to be true, but I believe that once a person acquires an addictive habit (smoking, alcohol, drugs or sugar are examples), that it’s easy to acquire a different addictive behavior. Mine became sugar. Keeping weight off after I quit smoking became the issue. Sugar, weight gain and lack of exercise became the bane of my existence. With that thought in mind, I recently read an article about obesity that might interest you. You might say: “Why would a dentist be interested in my weight?” I know that sugar increases weight, and it’s often hidden in food products. But sugar also increases cavities to the disappointment of my patients. I also see patients with weight issues suffer from more gum disease, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, blood-sugar and snoring/sleep-apnea issues. Sleep problems can increase decay due to acid reflux. Thin people can also have sleep apnea. With weight as a concern plus sleep problems, I’ve had patients say, “Well, I’m healthy. My doctor says I don’t have any problems.” But, please consider the burden of weight on your heart and various systems in your body. If you
As a society, we can improve food labeling, increase public awareness, connect with support via social media and enforce control of marketing potentially unhealthy products. carry 20 pounds around, you’re carrying two 10-pound bags of potatoes with you every day. That adds stress on your heart, lungs, knees and much more. Statistics from the 2017 Obesity Report, which can be found online at OECD.org, found that: • Obesity is highest internationally, in the U.S., Mexico, New Zealand and Hungary. It’s lowest in Japan and Korea. • In the U.S., 36 percent of adults are currently obese. At the current rate, by 2030, 47 percent of adult Americans will be obese. Sadly, today, 31 percent of U.S. children age 15 are obese.

• Male obesity has been growing more rapidly in the last five to 10 years. Enough of the doom and gloom; what can be done? As a society, we can improve food labeling, increase public awareness, connect with support via social media and enforce control of marketing potentially unhealthy products. Schools have taken up this cause, however, at the risk of offending parents. One of my patients, a parent, was offended by the message she received from school, ‘scolding her’ in her perspective, for sending her child to school with a cupcake. As a dentist, I have a holistic approach. It’s not ‘just’ about your teeth. Is stress, snoring, sleep apnea, sugar or perhaps a lack of exercise an issue? HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD? EARPLUGS ARE AN IMPORTANT SUMMER ACCESSORY BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY WE LIVE IN A NOISY WORLD. While everyone knows that earplugs should be worn in loud environments, we often overlook the hazardous levels of noise that can be present during common activities. In this short article, we will cover some of the dangerous sounds you should be considering, the potential consequences of noise exposure and how to protect your ears from serious damage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 40 million Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 have noise-induced hearing loss. We often associate this type of hearing loss with occupational exposure, but of those 40 million, more than one in two do not have noisy jobs. And although the percentage of the population affected by hearing loss increases with age, the young are not immune. More than 5 million individuals between the ages of 6 and 19 are also experiencing hearing loss related to noise exposure. Loud noise causes hearing loss by damaging the hair cells in your inner ear. So named because of the little hairs (cilia) that move in response to sound, hair cells are responsible for sensing sound and converting that sound into electrical signals, which in turn are sent to the brain. Hair cells cannot regenerate, so damage to these cells leads to permanent hearing loss. So, when does noise become dangerously loud? The loudness of a sound is measured in decibels (dB). Noise-induced hearing loss can be caused by exposure to noise over 85 dB for an extended period. Although most of us do not have access to a professional sound-level meter, there are apps available for download that can give you a good idea of the noise level.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
56
Below are the approximate dB levels of some common sounds: • 60 dB - Normal conversations, dishwashers • 80 dB - Alarm clocks • 90 dB - Hair dryers, blenders and lawnmowers/leaf blowers • 100 dB - MP3 players at full volume • 110 dB - Concerts, clubs, car racing and sporting events (hearing loss can occur in less than five minutes at this level) • 120 dB - Jet planes at takeoff • 130 dB - Ambulances and fire engine sirens • 140 dB - Gun shots, fireworks and custom car stereos at full volume It is important to note that hearing loss can occur with very limited exposure to the loudest of these sounds. If you’d prefer to avoid the hassle of using a sound level meter to determine whether noise is endangering your hearing, here are some simple rules. In general, noise is dangerously loud if: • • • •
You have to shout to be heard It is painful to your ears It makes your ears ring It makes your hearing seem muffled
Protecting your ears does not have to be an ordeal. For most typical noise exposure, standard foam earplugs are sufficient, if inserted properly. If you spend more time around high levels of noise, you may want to consider investing in custom earplugs, which can be made for almost any type of exposure. For any questions about hearing protection, please consult your local audiologist!

YOUR FEET
TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET AND THEY’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU!
Specializing in Cosmetic Skincare
BY CHRISTINA M. RUST, DPT
IF YOU’RE WALKING CORRECTLY, chances are your feet are “rockin’ and rollin’” the right way. The human foot and ankle is a strong and complex mechanical structure containing 26 bones, 33 joints—20 of which are actively articulated—and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Our feet are designed to absorb and distribute the ground reaction forces that occur when our toes hit the ground, whether we are walking, running, hiking or dancing. Normally, during the stance phase of gait, our heel strikes the ground first, we transfer our body weight forward onto the ball of the foot and then push off on the big toe to propel us forward to the next step. In addition to this rocking motion, the foot is also designed to roll approximately six to eight degrees laterally. The arches are built at an angle to encourage a normal medial to lateral rolling motion. All that rockin’ and rollin’ literally saves our feet from the pounding they experience throughout the day. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the foot structure known as pes cavus, or high arches. This type of foot is rigid and does not absorb ground reaction forces well. Folks with high arches tend toward developing foot pain, bunions, achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. A trained specialist, such as a physical therapist or orthotist, can identify kinetic and biomechanical problems with gait. The specialist first watches the way you walk, looking for movement abnormalities or painful compensatory patterns. A physical examination of the entire body, including postural alignment, usually follows. Specific testing of the mobility in the joints of the feet and toes with palpation of painful areas, calluses or corns is also included. Observation, clinical diagnosis and casting or molding of the foot anatomy used to be how a foot-care professional determined if orthotics were necessary.
Botox® Juvederm® Chemical peels
New Patients Only Botox at $10 $9 a Unit
Now, revolutionary advances in Computerized Gait Analysis systems such as Footmaxx are now the new gold standard for custom foot orthotics. Computers can capture gait biomechanics at 150 images per second. This is 20-times faster than the human eye. With amazing speed and accuracy, the computer can pinpoint exact abnormalities in movement that may occur with each step we take. In addition, the module that forms the base of a custom orthotic can now be fabricated out of many different types of materials, including carbon fiber. The combination of computerized technology and highly advanced materials creates the most customized orthotic on the market—not only for the individual but also for the specific activity. That means you can get an orthotic designed for walking, hiking, golfing, skiing, soccer, football and more. If you are having any foot or ankle pain, knee pain, hip or back problems, it could all be because your feet aren’t rocking and rolling correctly. Take care of your feet, and they will take care of you!

AS WE SIT DOWN FOR COFFEE and catch up for the first time in more than a year, Jim Morrison tells me he has another funeral to attend on Saturday. This will be the fourth this month with not even half the month gone. It’s become a reality for Jim as the more people he meets and connects with, the more of his newfound friends lose a battle that families in every corner of the nation are far too familiar with. “I feel obligated to these families and for my own self. I feel survivor’s guilt. But when you’re in a war there are going to be casualties, but just because there are casualties doesn’t mean you stop fighting,” he tells me. The reason for these feelings in Jim is the last 13 years of waking up to yet another sunrise he wasn’t supposed to see. January 4, 2004, Jim Morrison was given a 2-percent chance of survival and a diagnosis of six months to live. Upon returning from a hunting trip he felt an awful sickness in his chest and the diagnosis was stage 4 lung cancer, despite the fact Jim
was not a smoker. Like everyone who receives a death sentence, Jim was devastated, but the thought of death quickly washed away from his thoughts; he was going to survive this. Jim began putting goals in front him, the first being to walk his daughter down the aisle despite the wedding date being set past his life expectancy. When the idea of moving the wedding date came up, Jim told her absolutely not and months later found the strength to stand and escort his daughter on the most important day of her life. As Jim’s battle with lung cancer continued, he went through tremendously debilitating bouts of chemotherapy, and for a long time the only thing he could keep down and subsist on was little bits of water and gummy bears. What he never did along the way was quit. Jim had horrible days just like every other terminal cancer patient but was determined not to focus on the statistics but rather his own preservation. Fast forward to 2017, and Jim Morrison is alive.

He has twice-a-year checkups, but in the past decade, there has been no sign of the cancer that was supposed to put him in the ground before the end of 2005. He credits three ‘f ’ words for keeping him alive: faith, family and facilities. Jim’s diagnosis changed his outlook on life and his life’s mission forever. Gone are the days of caring about trivial matters, possessions and not being honest with one’s self. Today, tomorrow and each day he continues to live, sharing his story of survival and creating an army of cancer warriors. “I’m a workaholic and this is my new career. If God spared me for a reason, it wasn’t to screw around with the rest of my life, and the best reason to live is to help others,” says Jim. Jim’s other unexpected career is that of an author. He chose to write his first book, “To See Another Sunrise,” in order that he might inspire others who receive a cancer diagnosis. The book is brutally honest, and Jim leaves very little off the table about the man he was before,
during and after his cancer. Anyone who has met or listened to Jim can attest that this brand of honesty is never leaving this man. As Jim meets weekly with those battling cancer, he is not there for comforting “it’s gonna be ok” phrases; Jim is in attack mode. “I’m in reality mode,” he says. “Sweet talking people doesn’t help anybody, and some people don’t like that. You’d be shocked at how many people just roll over and quit.” These days Jim says he doesn’t have time for people who just want others to feel sorry for themselves about their cancer. “As soon as they get the diagnosis, they think death, my card has been pulled, and they quit. My philosophy is that life starts with cancer, it doesn’t end. The priorities you should be pursuing come to light with a diagnosis.” Jim lives and does most of his visits in North Idaho and Eastern Washington, but as his book has found its way into the hands of people

all over the country, so has Jim. He’s been a keynote speaker at symposiums and summits, and has visited patients in hospitals all over. He’s recently given his presentation in New York, Washington, D.C., Colorado and North Carolina, as well as completing a five-church tour across British Columbia. “I look forward to any opportunity to share a book and hear a story. It’s amazing the amount of people across the country the past few years that have reached out to me. I can tell you that I don’t think there’s a county in the U.S. that doesn’t have cancer in it,” Jim says. When being vetted for speaking engagements, Jim is often asked about his presentation and style. He’s been taken out of contention for some engagements because organizers felt his message wasn’t sympathetic enough. Despite that, Jim’s message isn’t changing. He continues to look at cancer as a war between the disease and the person, and if that person isn’t ready to fight for everything they hold dear, the disease is going to win out. Jim’s phone rings and new emails pop up daily from people locally or nationally reaching out
for guidance either for themselves or a loved one. Jim organizes monthly Cancer Warrior meetings in both Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls, Idaho, but also visits people in hospitals and in their homes. “Within the first or second meeting I can see if they are going to be a warrior. With others I come out of the meeting, sit in my truck and just shake my head. Cancer will take you down the path of fear or the path of faith. Faith conquers fear, so it’s simple: Are you going to overcome cancer or not.” Jim’s base of cancer warriors come out to his monthly meetings to continue to convey their plan of attack against the disease. First-time visitors are often surprised by what goes on but leave with a new appreciation for life and wanting to continue living it. “I’ve gone to funerals of people with treatable stage 1 cancer, but in my Post Falls group I have two braincancer survivors, both of which are more than five years past a diagnosis of death. Those are the true warriors,” he says. While there are stories of triumph and individuals overcoming this disease, the truth is some of Jim’s best and most inspiring warriors did not have the same outcome as he has. Despite losing their life to

cancer, Jim still considers them victors in the war. “I’ve seen many uplifting and positive people pass, but if and when they die, they die in peace.” Since gaining regional and national attention from his first book, Jim has encountered an amazing array of stories. As he gathered these experiences, he knew it was time to once again share his experiences, although this time the focus would be on the people he’s met. Cancer - My Rainbow in the Dark is a collection of these stories. In it are tales of unbelievable acts of courage and survival as well as low points of family members leaving their cancer warrior in the middle of their battle. It maintains Jim’s strict level of honesty and transparency in life and encourages the reader to look inward and become more honest. You will read the story of Charles Clock, a man who spent 30 years of his life battling cancer and beating it five times, as well as a father who sent a copy of “To See Another Sunrise” to his drug-addicted daughter in prison and credits the book for getting his little girl back clean and sober. Glancing through online reviews of the book, you will find others battling addiction, abuse,

One person at a time. self-pity and other afflictions can apply the message to their own situations as well. “I knew these stories had to be told; those who thrive despite their circumstances is amazing to me,” Jim says. His original three ‘f ’ words of faith, family and facility have now grown to 13. One of the most common questions he receives during presentations and book readings is, “How did you find the strength to keep going?” Jim pulls out his ‘f ’ words to make things as clear as possible. “I do it for God, I forgive, I forget the statistics and focus on surviving.” Jim’s technique is not a cure for cancer, and he is not promising this to anyone, but the bottom line is he was given a 2-percent chance to live more than six months, and with a combination of his personal faith, a supportive family and an incredible team of doctors and cancer facilities, he is cancer free. In Jim’s eyes, a cancer diagnosis is somewhat of a blessing as it allows you to focus on what is really important in your life. “All you have to do right now is survive, so what the hell difference does career, diet, exercise, money or anything else make if you don’t survive this?” Jim now looks at cancer one individual at a time. He has fully embraced his role as a mentor to those who want to truly live and become a cancer warrior.

What he wishes to convey to everyone he meets is his belief that the No. 1 way to extend and live a better life with cancer is attitude. “There are very good things that come from cancer. You have to fight to see them and when you do, you’ll realize just how special cancer can be.” As we wrap up our hour-long interview and finish the last of our coffee, Jim hands me a stack of five books to pass along. It takes me very little time to think of people to get these to. The first will be my mother, who through early detection has kept her cancer in check however has battled recurring bouts with the disease but maintains a positive and fulfilling life. I’m not sure if this attitude came from her strong will or after reading Jim’s first book, but I like to think it’s a combination of both. Once she’s read it, she will pass it to one of her best friends and neighbors who in her late 50s is battling aggressive breast cancer and is not expected to live a full life. Will the book help save her life? Will it make an impact and give her peace during her final days? Will one of her three children or husband read it as well and take something from it? I simply don’t know. What I do know is these five copies will find their way out into the world and at some point make a direct impact on someone’s life, and that’s all that Jim Morrison hopes for each time his words are read and his stories are shared.

or those who enjoy spending hours in the kitchen, cooking up feasts for their loved ones, it is ideal to have a kitchen space that is simplistic yet functional, accompanied by the proper, easy-to-use kitchen tools. Here’s a list of great kitchen gadgets that the at-home

chef should invest in, making food preparation easier and faster, allowing for more time to spend with family and friends around the table to enjoy a great meal.
Meat Thermometer Different meats require different internal temperatures to determine if they’re done and ready to eat! This can be difficult to determine if you don’t have a proper meat thermometer. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a useful tool to make cooking steaks, burgers, chicken, seafood and pork to the perfect temps. You can purchase a simple—yet accurate and affordable—thermometer, such as the Taylor Dial Pocket Thermometer, for as little as $5. If you’re into the high-tech gadgets, check out the new Thermapen Mk4. You can spend close to $100 for this advanced thermometer, but it takes the internal temperature in just two to three seconds, with the display rotating right-side up so you can read it in any position!
Microplane Microplane graters are ideal for zesting fruits like limes and oranges and work great when grating various food items such as ginger and nutmeg to garlic and cheeses. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing shoppers to find the one that fits their style best. Most are priced less than $15, making it not only a useful but affordable kitchen aid in any home. From the ergonomically designed Microplane Soft-Handle Fine Grater for $9.95 to the new Microplane Fine Rotary Grater with its renowned etched technology offering a razor-sharp blade that turns hard cheeses into wispy fine slivers for $17.95, any dish can be turned into a piece of art with the added touches this appliance offers.

Food processor Most food processors are electric-motor driven, while there are manual devices as well. This appliance uses interchangeable blades and disks (attachments), bowls that are wide and short (compared to blenders), allowing a more suitable shape for the solid foods usually worked in a food processor. You can find very basic, simple-to-use, but slow and lower quality for less than $30. If you have the taste and style of a professional chef, you may opt for something with more functionality and speed, high quality and durability, for a price tag surpassing the $150 mark.
quality KNIVES There’s nothing as frustrating as going to dice up that tomato for your summer salad and your beautiful tomato ends up a squashed mess. Knives are essential in the kitchen, and as one of the most used items, it’s worth the investment to buy good quality knives. You don’t have to break the budget to find a superior knife set that will get the job done. In the end, it will save you time, frustration and money. Want a knife that will allow that crisp, precise cut? Sorry, that $35 set just won’t do. Instead, a good starting point would be a Wüsthof knife set, which you can find in the low $100 range. Though they can seem a little clunky, these knives will get the job done at an affordable price.

Spaghetti MEASURE If you enjoy making pasta dishes and you haven’t yet heard of—or purchased—a spaghetti measure, you’re in for a surprise! This kitchen tool is designed to scale uncooked pasta portions accurately; very important for the summer months while many are trying to control their food intake. The Joseph Joseph Spaghetti Measure is a compact measurer with adjustable portion guide with a lever that glides along the side of a disc to accurately measure pasta from one to four servings. It can be found for as low as $10, depending on color choice. Al-De-Chef 's plastic spaghetti measure has a simpler design, with four separate holes along a flat surface, ranging from one serving to four, and can be found for less than $4. Strand long pastas such as spaghetti, linguine and fettuccine.
vitamix These have been all the craze for the past decade or so—and have been a staple in restaurant kitchens for decades—but with a high price tag, this item can seem more of a luxury than a kitchen necessity. The truth is … your life will never be the same. From hot soups and baby food, flours and dough, nut butters, frozen desserts, batters, dressings, sauces, dips and spreads, to nondairy milks, smoothies and juices, the Vitamix is the ultimate solution. The Vitamix can even mince garlic, chop carrots, shred potatoes and grate hard cheeses! For this top-of-the-line “blender,” be prepared to spend anywhere from around $250 to $750. But remember, you’ll be happy you did.

cutting boards First off, it is important to note that wood cutting boards are better than plastic ones because they have a natural antibacterial agent. Plus, they’re better on your knives—which is important if you’ve made the leap to investing in higherquality, more expensive knives—as plastic boards dull your knife faster while wood absorbs the force of your knife. Resilient end-grain cutting boards are the way to go. A top choice by chefs, John BOOS cutting boards are NSF restaurant certified and available anywhere. In addition, with a beautiful wood board, it’s pleasing to the eyes and a welcome addition to your countertop. As you do your research, they may seem expensive, but they’re a lifetime investment—and a work of art.

et me start by saying, on any given day, you can cook like a chef.
I am a chef. I am a husband and father. I am an American worker. At home we cut coupons and plan family meals. We look for the about-to-be-out-ofdate meat deals at the grocery store because we know that everything is fine and it’s fill the freezer time. We do the enormous once-a-month pay day “it’s time to load the SUV and maybe get some gas credits at the local mega outlet where everything comes in tubs, eight packs or sacks that you actually, for once, do need help out to the car with, yes and thank you.” In our family repertoire, we have the good ol’ standards that get us through things like soccer practice, swim class, school functions or the not-so-occasional “dad has to work at the restaurant late tonight” type situations. This is our modern family life. Now … fast forward, or back, to that situation, chef or not, where you have opened, closed and re-opened the refrigerator door at least 500 times, staring at your depleting inventory wondering, “What am I going to do for dinner tonight, to … to … WOW everyone? To not have the peanut gallery basically Yelp you into another chili-mac-atuna-saurus monstrosity that ends up more in the disposal than in their little Siskel and Ebert stomachs. I’m here to help. You have enough “stuff ” in your arsenal at all times to make amazing meals, but you forget your inventory. And I do too. Here is a personal example of our weekly family dinner that I have not yet organized. In the tall, cold rectangle box that houses random items, I found: parts of a beautifully cooked and left-to-die chicken, a wilting red pepper that was probably supposed to be the star of some kind of unknown greatness, an onion that is

starting to grow and some horrible winter tomatoes that should not have been in refrigeration in the first place—or even ever grown for that matter—but there they are. Oh … and a lime. I keep those around because I enjoy limes. By limes, I mean tequila. So here is what I did in a recipe format. Oven cranked to 500°F. Cut tomatoes in half, place on a pan and put in oven until blackened. Cut open and remove all seeds and ribs (white-ish part) of the red pepper and cut it onto strips like french fries. Cut the onion in the same manner. (We call that cut julienne, cool to know, but doesn’t change the flavor.) Throw them into a medium hot cast-iron pan with a little butter or oil until they are soft. I found some random things in the pantry cabinet to complete this gourmet meal. While the peppers and onions are wilting away, start cooking some white rice. To the cast-iron pan, add garlic and chili powder (add two tablespoons of tomato paste if you have it). Blend blackened tomatoes in blender or food processor and add to the pan. Shred chicken and add that. Simmer and reduce until rich and saucy. Squeeze in lime juice and salt to taste. On a plate, place rice to one side, ladle your culinary magic over half of the rice allowing it to spill onto the plate and garnish with cheese, tortillas, cilantro and lime wedge. (I didn’t have these last items but hey, it was still good!)
There are some basic items to keep around the kitchen that will allow you to create meals at a moment’s notice; things like potatoes, rice, garlic, soy sauce and chili powder. I like to keep fennel seeds. If you quickly toast them in a pan you can take breakfast potatoes to a whole new level. Here is a basic recipe for a side dish that will transform your dinner table into a restaurant. • 3 large russet potatoes baked and cooled just enough to be able to handle them. • 1.5-ish cups of flour • 1 egg • 2 tsp. salt Peel the potatoes and run them through a ricer (food mill). Beat egg and salt together. On a cutting board, spread out potatoes and mix in egg. Work in flour and knead with your hands adding flour until you have a dough-like consistency. This should be about three minutes. With your hands, roll out ropes that are about a half-inch thick. Cut ropes into one-inch sections. Slightly press an indentation with your thumb into each piece. In a pot of lightly boiling salted water, drop in gnocchi—believe it or not, that’s what you just made—a few at a time. They are done when they float to the top. In a hot pan, add a quarter stick of butter. Let
it brown a little. Add gnocchi and sauté until lightly browned. Add freshly chopped sage, salt and pepper to taste. Finish with parmesan cheese. This is an easy and great side dish to any meal that will turn basic things like roasted chicken with sautéed zucchini into a plate you would see in your favorite restaurant. Try your gnocchi with a cream sauce or a marinara to mix things up. Remember, it’s just food. Have fun!

TRAVEL & LEISURE
PERFECTION REFINED: Latest evolution of the ideal Northwest getaway By Dan Aznoff
IF YOU WERE GIVEN the opportunity to design the ultimate vacation destination in Washington, you’d start with a romantic point of waterfront tucked into the Northwest corner of the state surrounded on three sides by the pristine waters of the Puget Sound with inspirational sunsets to the west and views of a majestic Cascade peak that dominate the horizon to the east. Your resort would have a casual atmosphere with dining options that range from fine bistros to casual eateries. Between meals, guests could divide their time between water sports, the challenge of seaside golf courses and the indulgences of a world-class spa. Your slice of perfection would have easy access to beachfront trails that twist past mountains of bleached driftwood with access to tide pools teeming with life from the sea. The beach would be within walking distance from a dense forest that offers shade from the sun and cover for the small

animals that live under the canopy of the tall evergreens. Once you’ve found the ideal location created by nature, you could add some of the best man-made enhancements that make every adventure a memorable experience, like a charming little town with quaint restaurants and retail shops filled with the usual trinkets and distinctive clothing. And of course, there would be restaurants that reflect the heritage of the community. The good news for individuals who are more doers than planners, this ideal holiday retreat already exists. It is the oftenoverlooked destination of Semiahmoo near Blaine. Located on the Washington coast just 90 miles north of Seattle and 40 miles south of Vancouver in British Columbia, the Semiahmoo Resort features award-winning dining, an outdoor pool, full-service spa, two award-winning golf courses and access

to a myriad of outdoor activities. The destination is just the right distance away for a romantic weekend getaway. The golf courses and spa make it an ideal location for an important business conference that does not exclude spouses. The beaches and forest make it a great place for an extended vacation with children. And the pet-friendly facilities make the resort a place the entire family can enjoy. The Semiahmoo Resort was built inside the historic low-profile structure that was once the world’s largest salmon cannery. It sits on 1,100 acres of a long sandy spit near the Canada–U.S. border. The resort takes its name from the name of the indigenous people in whose language means “halfmoon,” which describes the crescent-shaped land the resort was built on. The destination opened as the ultimate golf getaway in 1994 as home to the Loomis Trail Golf Club and Semiahmoo Golf and
Country Club. The latter was designed by Arnold Palmer and was voted the sixth best golf course in Washington state by Golfweek in 2011. For some reason, the original hotel, restaurants and spa closed in December of 2012. The property was purchased one year later by a hotel group from Seattle who reopened in August of 2013 after $6 million in renovations. The upscale resort now has 183 deluxe air-conditioned guest rooms plus 28 luxury suites. The dining options at Semiahmoo cater to almost every palate, including snack bars on the golf course and inside the spa. The Packers Oyster Bar behind the hotel offers casual waterfront dining and an exceptional happy hour. The Pierside Kitchen offers choices that highlight fresh seafood from the waters of the Puget Sound and produce from farms in the nearby Skagit Valley. The Great Blue Heron Grill offers cuisine in an elegant atmosphere that is appropriate for

a quick burger or a romantic date-night dinner. For the adventurous types, the hotel has bikes, kayaks and paddleboards available for rent. For those who enjoy activities on the sand, there is beach volleyball, sandcastle building and a nightly gathering around a fire pit where the resort provides all the ingredients to build the perfect s’more. Whether or not you have a sweet tooth, the seats around the fire pit offer exceptional views across the water of the armada of sailboats and yachts that troll the international waters and across to the shops and homes in the Canadian town of White Rock. Semiahmoo Spit offers more than 300 acres of tideland and roughly 1.5 miles of trails ideal for walking, biking and birdwatching. The region’s tide pools, estuaries and waterways attract thousands
of geese, ducks, gulls, loons and shorebirds each year and recently made the Audubon Society’s list as one of Washington’s top birding destinations. It attracts a thriving population of endangered species including the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and the marbled murrelet. Point Whitethorns Marine Reserve and Blaine Marine Park are both located just a few clicks from the front door of the resort. Both offer waterfront experiences worth the price of admission. The first ½ mile of forest trail at Whitehorn is wheelchair accessible and takes visitors past twisted stumps and specimens of native growth forest. The beach itself is strewn with heaps of driftwood and makeshift shelters built around fire pits. Lucky visitors to the beach can get up-close views of the seals that feast off the fish in the waters that lead into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. If you’re quiet (and really lucky), you

can see bald eagles positioned on top of the tallest old trees as they watch over the beach for signs of migrating salmon. The eagles can be seen in mid-air battles with crows as the rivals compete for the highest perches on the oldest trees. The pristine beach gives no clue of the history of the reserve. The shoreline was originally an unattractive piece of seashore that was held, but not developed, by the Whatcom Land Trust until an oil spill from a Bellingham refinery in 1999 dumped thousands of gallons of thick oil on the beach. The WTL used fines levied against the oil companies to purchase .3 miles of the Georgia Strait wetlands from BC Hydro that was developed to become Whatcom County Park. That purchase was leveraged to fund access to the beaches and protect the shoreline from future environmental damage.

From the solitude of the deserted beach, it’s a short drive into the community of Blaine that sits just south of the international border. Blaine is the American side of the shared home of the Peace Arch international monument. There are sidewalk cafes in town that straddle the boundary. The Peace Arch City Cafe offers gluten-free options for breakfast or lunch, while Bob’s Burgers & Brew earns its top spot on every review of restaurants in Blaine for its grass-fed beef and scores of ice cold beer on tap. ere at Jim’s Classic Garage, we love cars. Its not a job for us, its a passion. We want to pass on and express that passion in every car we restore. A lot of collector car sites have inflated prices, little to no customer service, and are just trying to push a sale so they can cash in. We know here at Jim’s that honesty and caring about our customers needs is not only a good business model, but the right thing to do. We show accurate pictures including the damage other companies may try and hide, and give proper descriptions so our customers know what they are getting. That is why you can look at any of our testimonials, reviews or stop by the shop yourself and see that we price our cars and our work fairly.

We have trucks, foreign cars, domestic cars, etc. If we don’t have what you’d like, we can help you find it.
