“As a first-home buyer, I was so intimidated by the process, as you probably are if you are reading this. I’m here to tell you not to worry. Get in touch with Northwest Mortgage Services. Our loan officer, Abel Hernandez, was fantastic. He made sure my wife and I were informed every step of the way, and was very responsive to my calls and questions. I was seeking a VA Loan, so I had a few extra concerns on requirements and things to consider, but Abel and his team are extremely experienced in this aspect as well. The bottom line is they care about what they do, and who they are doing it for. The only thing I would have done differently is calling them sooner.” - James Santos

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RUG FOR YOUR HOME By Deann Hammer, Broadway Design
C
arpets are the foundation of our home. With summer in full swing, many of us are shoe-free, and not only do carpets visually impact the appearance of our home, but foot feel and durability is of great importance as well.
Carpets should be taken seriously and purchased for longevity, and many are considered fine art. With the popularity of hardwood over the last decade, area rugs have taken center stage—and are here to stay. Carpets provide an opportunity to add pops of color and create a design theme that is unique to you. If you are interested in decorating your home to the next level, a quality rug is a great first step toward a room transformation. When selecting wall-to-wall carpet, you want to look at the fiber content. Nylon or wool is still the best choice. There are many other options, but olefin, and other new-to-market fibers, easily crush and soil, and are not made to last. I personally prefer a cut and loop for wall to wall. Some fibers are looped like a Berber, mixed with cut fibers, giving the carpet a nice visual appeal. I like low pile wall-to-wall carpets in multicolor so that it gives the look of texture and hides foot traffic. The cut fibers in a cut and loop also prevent the carpet from “running.” If a yarn gets loose in a vacuum, it will not pull through the whole run like a Berber will.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
Large, patterned carpets are fun in an office, bonus room or master bedroom to add some character to a space. I also like to use patterns on stair runners for interest. There are staggering differences in the quality of area rugs. One of the largest mistakes people make when purchasing an area rug is that if they have a busy household, they think a less-expensive rug will be a better choice, as it can be tossed when it wears out, or easily cleaned. This is not the case! A high-quality wool rug will be much easier to clean and will save you money in the long run, as it will last for many, many years. The best quality wool rugs will have longer fibers that will not shed and will maintain their pile height (not flatten with foot traffic). An average cost for a “better” rug will range between $1,500 to $5,000 for an 8x10foot rug. They can top the charts at over $10,000, and if it is vintage, a rug can be $10,000 to $20,000 for estate sized (larger than 8x10 feet). Retail rugs sold online (like Pottery Barn), that sell for around $800 or less, are typically made with short fibers and shed like crazy—steer clear from those! When purchasing, try to run your fingers across them to see if they shed. Shedding carpets are awful. They make a mess of your home and really bother those with allergies.
Carpets should be taken seriously and purchased for longevity, and many are considered fine art. I love silk rugs. They are ultra luxurious and can last lifetimes. The colors are more vivid, but they are very expensive. I paid $7,500 for a 4x6-foot rug more than a decade ago. But I love it! It is truly a work of art and looks exactly the same as the day I purchased it. Consider color. An area rug is a great opportunity to add life to a room. Handmade rugs are the best, as they are not stiff, have natural dyes that are rich and luxurious, and have a nice “flop,” meaning they bend and move and are not stiff. When you run your hand over a high-quality handmade wool rug, it should feel almost like silk. Machine-made rugs are here to stay as well if your budget does not allow for a real handmade wool or silk rug. These are often made from recycled soda bottles and have a flatter feel to them. The current trend is more muted colors and traditional “burned out” or vintage-looking styles. An average cost for a polypropylene rug is around $400 to $600 for an 8x10-foot rug. Make sure to buy a premium pad to place beneath your rug as well. I use a felt pad with a rubber back that stops the carpet from sliding on the floor, while adding that extra cushy feel under foot. These pads cost between $150 to $300 for an 8x10 and will extend the life of your rug, as they allow the carpet to lift up off of the floor and maintain its pile height. HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A MAKEOVER
T
BY JENNIFER “TAZ” VAZQUEZ
he other day while reading, I came across the statement, “Perfectionism is insecurity with lipstick on.” It made me chuckle, pause, and got me thinking … I so used to wear an unflattering shade of “Insecurity” lipstick! I owned it (snap, snap), and walked … okay, tripped on … life’s catwalk. I fully believed my inner critic’s (my designer diva’s) repetitive negative comments of, “You are not good enough” and “Mistakes are bad.”
Jennifer Vazquez
How about for you? Where in your life have you worn an unflattering “Insecurity” shade of lipstick; or felt the brand “Perfectionism” was the only designer label you would wear?
I help you discover what sets your soul on fire ... Rediscover your creativity, beauty and power!
Perfectionism stems from wanting to feel in control, and/or to be liked, loved and accepted. It can lead to a fear of disapproval, a need to seek approval and a lack of trust. It can cause us to be overly critical and have unrealistic standards. We end up seeing failure in anything short of absolute perfection (which does not exist). This mindset impacts our quality of life, relationships and work. It leads to unhappiness, insecurity, depression and anxiety.
Let’s create how you want to show up in this world!
So, what can you do to make over your inner perfectionista? Try these four tips:
Life Coaching
1. Set Your Intention. Visualize what you want to accomplish and feel it. How would it feel, what would you see, how would you be? Let go of the expected outcome and trust it will work out. Letting go builds trust and confidence, helps you to be more creative, and open to new possibilities. 2. Awareness. Mindfulness can help you tune in to what your inner critic is negatively repeating and notice how it is causing you to feel insecure or fearful of making mistakes.

Once you are aware of the thoughts; notice and name the feelings associated with those thoughts. Also observe where and how those feelings show up in your body. Next, ask what memory is associated with the thoughts and feelings. It is important to do this from a place of nonjudgmental curiosity, and a willingness to hold space for the thoughts, emotions and memories that come up. 3. Resistance Check. Take a moment to check in with your inner designer diva. Notice if there is any resistance coming up around your intention? If yes, be curious, explore, and gently challenge the fear and negative messages that are coming up. This will help lower the resistance and help you move forward. 4. Take Action. What’s one small step you could take toward your intention, even if imperfect? Then do it, celebrate, and repeat. Small steps make it easier to continue, and celebrating is fun. Be sure to take time to enjoy the process and see success in moving forward toward your intentions. It is the process of being, becoming, and doing that can lead to even more positive possibilities and opportunities. There will be times when the resistance kicks back in. It is okay; just know you have the tools to work through it and to keep moving forward. If you want a more joyful, creative and colorful life, follow these steps to make over your inner perfectionista. As I made over my inner perfectionista, I switched to a flattering shade of “I am Enough” lipsticks. I even started a new “Self-Love'” ready-to-wear collection titled, “Imperfect is Fun.” Gotta tell y’all ... I’m loving my makeover! Here is to your authentic beautiful self, inside and out!

W
By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Family Mediator
hen I was growing up, I had a poster hanging in my bedroom with the words of the poem “Children Learn What They Live” by Dorothy Law Nolte. That poem simplifies, in the best way, encouragement for parents who want to raise strong and thoughtful children, especially during challenging times.
each other’s freezers for popsicles, many parents might find that too close for comfort.) Measuring drive times between homes and school/ daycare is helpful in an effort to reduce the time your children spend in a car transitioning between homes and school. Expecting a child to wake up early and spend a long time in a car before school in the morning does not set that child up for success.
Now that many kids are looking forward to returning to a more traditional post-pandemic school schedule of in-person learning, how do you help them adjust to yet another transition if you are recently separated or divorced? What kind of example do you want to set to show your kids that life’s challenges can be handled in a positive way? Like many parents who created two homes during the last year as the result of a marital split, your residential schedule for your children most likely revolved around working from home while juggling supervising remote schooling. In other words, your parenting schedule had to adapt to temporary circumstances and was not intended to be the best version of a parenting plan.
2. How can you maximize spending time with your children during their “awake” hours that coincides with your “time off work” hours? More and more, parents are not working the traditional Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm workday with only weekends off. Medical professionals, airline pilots and flight attendants, law enforcement officers and firefighters, restaurant workers, and retail or manufacturing jobs entailing shift work are commonplace and require creative thinking when it comes to working together with a co-parent to create a schedule that starts from fairly allocating days off for parenting time, and then ends with which home is easier for a child to sleep on any given night.
For those of you wondering, “What do we do now?”, here are some tips.
3. How flexible can you be when the unexpected work conflict, doctor’s appointment or school activity arises? Communication and equally sharing responsibilities are the keys to flexibility. And flexibility among parents is the key to a child’s adaptation when living in a two-home family. Rigidity serves no purpose here, as you probably experienced during the challenges of the past year.
In my family law and mediation practice, many clients tell me they want “50/50 custody.” As an aside, the first thing I encourage is to drop the term “custody” and replace it with “residential schedule.” While there are occasions where it makes sense to name a “primary residential parent,” the term “custody” is outdated and does not reflect the wide expansion of available options now for co-parenting. When parents request equal residential time, there are certain factors that will set your children, your co-parent and you up for success. First and foremost, any residential schedule will be much better managed if your conflict is managed. Low levels of conflict and skillful handling of negative emotions will go a long way in producing positive experiences when other helpful practical considerations may be lacking. What are those practical considerations? Ask yourself the following: 1. How close do you want to live to one another? Proximity is important. (However, while I’ve had clients literally living in the same cul de sac so their kids could ride their bikes back and forth and raid

I
n general, Americans are not sufficiently prepared to pay for long-term care. Many of them go through their lives simply hoping that they won’t ever need it. Unfortunately, in the event that you or a loved one does need long-term care, hope won’t be enough to protect you from potential financial ruin. Self-insurance as an option To self-insure—that is, to cover the cost yourself—you must have sufficient income to pay the rising costs of long-term care. Keep in mind that even if you have sufficient resources to afford long-term care now, you may not be able to handle rising future costs without drastically altering your lifestyle. The Medicaid option

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that covers medical bills for the needy. If you qualify, it may help pay for your long-term care costs. Unfortunately, Medicaid is basically welfare. In order to qualify, you generally have to have few assets or will need to spend down your assets. State law determines the allowable income and resource limits. If you have even one dollar of income or assets in excess of these limits, you may not be eligible for Medicaid. To receive Medicaid assistance, you may have to transfer your assets to meet those limits. This can be tricky, however, because there are tough laws designed to discourage asset transfers for the purpose of qualifying for Medicaid. If you have engaged in any “Medicaid planning,” consult an advisor to discuss any new Medicaid rules.
Long-term care insurance A long-term care insurance policy may enable you to transfer a portion of the economic liability of long-term care to an insurance company in exchange for the regular premiums. Long-term care insurance may be used to help pay for skilled care, intermediate care and custodial care. Most policies pay for nursing home care, and comprehensive policies may also cover home care services and assisted living. Insurance can help protect your family financially from the potentially devastating cost of a long-term disabling medical condition, chronic illness or cognitive impairment. A complete statement of coverage, including exclusions, exceptions and limitations, is found only in the policy. Long-term care riders on life insurance A number of insurance companies have added long-term care riders to their life insurance contracts. For an additional fee, these riders will provide a benefit—usually a percentage of the face value—to help cover the cost of longterm care. This may be an option for you. SCHOOL YEAR APPROACHES Teachers, students, parents anxious for ‘normal’ year By Colin Anderson
A
s life continues to return to normal, local school kids are hoping the same will hold true for the upcoming school year. While teachers all across the country did their best to keep their students not just on track academically, but socially, it is simply not possible to replicate the in-person school experience from afar. While some students did well with the responsibility of remote learning, others struggled to stay on task. Parents, especially those with young children, are also eager to see a return to a more normal school year. Balancing work, often from home, with staying up to date on their child’s learning and finding time to take care of the other important aspects and daily tasks of life, was overwhelming at times. The school day provides a sense of routine in which both students and their parents can appreciate, and was something that might have been taken for granted previously. As we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, we take a moment to reflect and say thank you to the educators and administrators who worked tirelessly to adapt to ever-changing direction and protocol from local, state and federal officials. We heard from numerous teachers about their students’ resilience in the face of such adversity, and how they are coming out of the experience not just as adaptable learners but more compassionate toward each other, and more confident having undergone such a chaotic school year.
Very soon the sound of whistles blowing, helmets smacking and soccer balls being struck will again fill the after-school air as high school sports return. The ring of the bell and the ensuing commotion as younger children scramble outside of school, looking for their bus ride home or their parent’s minivan, there to meet them at the end of a full day. Even the sound of music, as bands and choirs reassemble in preparation of filling their school auditoriums with beautiful music in front of a packed house. As much of life has returned to pre-pandemic normal, school districts are still subject to more restrictions than most settings. Administrators are finalizing plans as they make final preparations to welcome students back full time, and if there was ever a year to keep up to date on the latest information, it is this one. Immunization, class size, cleaning procedures, masking and social distancing vary greatly from district to district, and even from elementary to high school. Visit your district’s website frequently so both you and your child are best prepared for what is to come this school year. As summer closes, kids can look forward to being in a classroom, instead of in front of a screen. High fives and hugs can replace fist bumps and air slaps, and an upcoming school year that will hopefully resemble something we can call normal.

unners of all skill levels can once again enjoy one of the area’s favorite and most scenic runs. Registration for the annual Galloping Gertie is currently open, and organizers are hoping for another great turnout after missing out on the run in 2020. The race, whose namesake comes from the dubious nickname of the previous Tacoma Narrows Bridge that collapsed back in November of 1940, will traverse across the newest section of bridge, the eastbound, which opened back in 2007. No matter if you choose the half marathon, 10k, or 5k, each run will send you across the iconic bridge that holds spectacular views of the Puget Sound, Olympics and Mount Rainier. The starting line for all three distances is the Tacoma Narrows Airport. The 5k course will depart from the airport, catch Stone Drive and then move onto the bridge. Runners will go about halfway across then turn around and go back the same route. The 10k is a similar route, however, runners will go all the way across the bridge before their turnaround.

The half marathon adds several additional miles, including a pass through some beautiful old-growth forest. The course is now flatter than in previous years, so faster times can be expected. The event takes place on Saturday, August 7, which is also when you’ll receive your race packet. Be sure to pick up your bib and packet no later than 7:45am, as the first run goes off at 8am. There are aid stations and porta-potties located along each course, and each participant will receive a tech race shirt, complimentary downloadable race photos, a finisher’s medal and entrance to the after-party. You can register in advance at Galloping-Gertie.com. Volunteers are also needed for the event, and you can sign-up at the race homepage as well. The event is sponsored by the Gig Harbor Rotary, and proceeds from the Galloping Gertie will help fund many community-centric projects like Food Backpacks 4 Kids, Children’s Home Society and Communities in Schools Peninsula.

HIDDEN CREATURES MYTHICAL BEINGS HIDING AROUND THE HARBOR

SEARCHING FOR THESE LOST CREATURES IS SOMETHING ANYONE OF ANY AGE AND ABILITY CAN TACKLE.
T
here are rumors swirling about Gig Harbor of mythical creatures hidden in plain sight, all hoping to be found by local adventurous souls. In fact, Qwannyth the Grand Dame of the Underplace, Mistress of the Impossible, Keeper of the Realm has shared this message, which the local Gnombassador has translated: “Dear Human, Go forth and seek my Little Gnomies. Bring them thither, and thy reward shall be great indeed. For each gnome located, you shall receive 100,000 CS (Crumples Sterling) or the equivalent in another form of payment that shall enrich your life. Find my Internet Gnomes to me and enjoy the Fruits of the Web forever … but if they cannot be found … I fear a terrible period of sickness, strife and far worse— boredom—may be upon us all. Therefore seeker, tarry no longer, but sally forth on your quest to return my— Gnomes Away From Home.” The local Gnomebassador is Justin Teerlinck, a fun-loving Gig Harbor resident and community mental health and wellness occupational therapist. After a year of people cooped up, Justin wanted to

do something that not only brought the community out and together, but also would help support local businesses and general well-being of the town he loves so dearly. “My aim is to foster the health and well-being of the entire community by promoting play and encouraging people to think, feel, move, explore, and connect with each other,” he explained. For many, play is often viewed as childish, immature, and even detrimental to aspects of adulthood. Justin holds a quite different perspective on the matter. “I see play as integral to an intrinsic sense of awe and wonder, fulfillment, and the ability to see the world in novel ways—which can actually aid us in our work lives, if you consider the need for productivity and the intelligence required for complex problem-solving.” While many treasure hunts are designed specifically for children, searching for these lost creatures is something anyone of any age and ability can tackle. A wide range of people have already discovered several of the gnomes after following clues from the Gnomebassador found at GnomesAway.com.

“PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THEY'RE NOT EVEN THAT INTERESTED IN WINNING A PRIZE; THEY JUST WANT TO HUNT FOR THE GNOMES, AND THEY LOVE READING AND SOLVING THE RIDDLES AND CLUES.”
following the Gnomebassador and eagerly awaiting the next series of clues. As word continues to spread, you’ll see more and more gnome hunters out and about in search of the remaining few lost gnomes. “People have told me they're not even that interested in winning a prize; they just want to hunt for the gnomes, and they love reading and solving the riddles and clues,” said Justin.
Some of the clues are more general, while others are very specific. According to Justin, the more general clues are harder to solve, because they will guide you to the vicinity of the gnome, but not directly to the gnome. The more specific clues will guide you directly to where the gnome is hiding. “I use a range of difficulty so that everyone gets the 'just right' challenge, so it's not surprising that some of the gnomes with more specific clues are found within hours of hiding them, and the more difficult ones can take a week or longer.” Interestingly, this is actually not just guesswork, but a specialized skill called "activity grading" that Justin was trained in as an occupational therapist. “It helps me meet the needs of people of every ability level, so that everyone can participate in the activity without feeling left out or left behind,” he said. Once a gnome is discovered, blog and social media followers are alerted. The person who discovers the hidden gnome receives a gift card to a locally owned business, and the cards are funded by a Creative Endeavor Grant through the Arts Commission of the City of Gig Harbor. Within five days of launching the website, there were already 200 people 34

If you are ready to embark on this quest, visit GnomesAway.com. Click on the image of the gnome you want to search for, and you’ll see a map as well as clues that will help get you pointed in the right direction. The Gnomebassador wants to remind people that all gnomes are hiding on public property, and you will never need to dig, hop a fence, climb or disturb any ground in order to find them. While there are only a few gnomes left, once the last one is located a new quest will begin. Justin has in his possession eight gold medallions attached to lanyards that will be hidden around Gig Harbor. Just like the gnome hunt, people will need to decipher clues to find them. Each medallion will have a word written on it, and once all eight are found, the words will form a scrambled phrase. Justin will publicly post the words as they are found, and the first person to put them in the correct order will win a prize. The Gnomebassador’s quest has been more successful than he even thought possible. “When I see the pictures that parents send me of their families and children proudly holding up a gnome, I feel like I've won my own grand prize. Every smile is a victory for me. I want everyone to have a good time searching, whether they find a gnome or not.” There is still time, but others are out searching right now. Can you figure out the clues first? Or will another beat you to it? Your quest begins today.

Change Your Water, Change Your Life Say hello to Kangen Water®
By Jillian Chandler
J
ohn A. Sheridan wants to share something with the Gig Harbor community; a discovery he made personally that has changed his life, and that of his family’s, for the better.
“The beauty of this product is rapid cellular hydration, which hydrates your body more quickly,” shares John. Coast to Coast Kangen Gold Water, which is veteran owned, offers home and commercial ionization systems. John shares that these systems are wonderful for people who are interested in their health—especially athletes. Water is essential to life, and rather than having to constantly purchase bottled water—which is an entirely different issue—consumers can purchase this system, attach it to the water system in your kitchen sink, and consistently be delivered some of the best tasting water you can find. “It’s by far the best water in the world!” John attests. The machine is an investment, but as John reminds us, “What is your health worth?” John has called the Northwest home since the Navy brought him here back in 1983. After 30 years in the Military—10 years active-duty Navy, 10 years U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and 10 years U.S. Army Reserve—he retired in 2019. Years filled with not the most nutritious of diets, and bouts of heat stroke and dehydration during his many deployments in the Middle East, left John feeling the years of wear on his body— especially his colon. Then, in December of 2019, he would discover a life-changing remedy. John was introduced to Enagic’s Kangen Water® through a good friend of his and, within a few weeks, bought a Kangen Water® machine of his own. “After drinking it for a few months, this water detoxified me. I felt better, and my symptoms had diminished. I can’t even explain how drinking this water has changed my life,” he attests. He decided he wanted to share the benefits of this product first with his family, expanding to his friends and now his local communities. He began doing business as Coast to Coast Kangen Gold Water, representing Enagic’s Kangen Water®, in early 2020. “As I’m not a scientist, the simplest way to explain how this water system works is to say that it plugs into your sink faucet, creates a negative and a positive charge in the water, and puts electrolytes into the water. You can choose a pH of 8.5 to 9.5 for drinking. Through this technology, it creates the water we’re supposed to be drinking, free of chemicals and toxins.”

This water ionizer machine produces healthy alkaline water and, through its electrolysis process, the technology in the Kangen machine produces a sanitizing pH 2.5 and also a pH of 11.5 for cleaning. “My wife thoroughly enjoys the beauty water at 6.0, while our youngest grandchild drinks the 7.0, reaping the benefits of this micro-clustered electrolyte water.” John is excited, and feels blessed, to be able to share this product with others. “[Pursuing this business venture] is about people—and relationships,” shares John. “Life is about relationships.
“The most rewarding part of this journey is my opportunity to share it with those around me. Since retirement from the Military, I’ve started a new chapter in my life. I’m majoring in business law and minoring in organizational leadership. For me, to talk about the water, and share my personal experience, is another fun thing to do and something I enjoy.” If you are looking to feel your best, John is ready to help you on your journey. He invites you to give him a call today at 360.801.5872 to set up a meeting, and he will come to you and share more about Coast to Coast Kangen Gold Water and how Kangen Water® can positively impact your wellness journey. He will even bring water for you to try, giving you an opportunity to “try before you buy.” With an aim to do business locally and in surrounding communities focused in the Northwest, John’s ready to help you discover how you can change your life … one glass at a time.

For more information on the Gig Harbor Open Studio Tour, your best bet is to follow the event on Facebook for new and changing information. But art doesn’t begin and end with painting, photography or sculpture. For do-it-yourself projects, there is the AR Workshop in Gig Harbor. The workshop is a combination of retail and workspace, where anyone can get their project done. It combines the practicality of everyday use with a beautiful expression of what makes a project “you.” Offered through the workshop are do-it-yourself kits, summer camps, group sessions, and instructor-led one-on-one courses that center around home décor and practical-use home crafts.
Weekly art classes for homeschoolers, after-school art, weeklong summer arts camps, adult workshops, weekend gatherings and parties are all offered through Peacock Paisley Art Studio. With mediums to include watercolor and acrylic painting, drawing, pottery, hand lettering, art journaling and crochet, Peacock Paisley Art Studio prides itself as being a place to connect and create. Weekly trail running is offered by USA Track & Field certified coach Susan Larson from Great+Full Running. In the 12- to 13-year-old group, players build athletic fundamentals by learning proper footwork and racquet mechanics. At this level, players will be able to use a full-sized court and net. Instructors focus on teaching the basics of rallying, serving and keeping score. Ages 14 through 18 will continue to work on fundamentals but also positioning and tactics used during both singles and doubles play. An added bonus is that Tennis Camp is part of the Pierce County “Kids Need to Play!” program. This means 70 percent off registration fees, which is automatically applied at registration. There are a couple of upcoming fun family oriented events as well. On August 20, you can lay out your favorite picnic blanket or lawn chairs as well as snacks and drinks and watch Jurassic Park with other eager outdoor movie-goers. A big screen will be set up at Sehmel Homestead Park, and the show gets going at 7:30pm. You can also enjoy part of your Labor Day weekend finding out who the best putter in the family is as the Kiwanis Club and PenMet Parks are excited for the return of the Mini Golf Classic. Cost is $50 to register your foursome, and all ages welcome. The 18-hole family friendly course is located conveniently next to Highway 16 at the PenMet Community Recreation Center. Proceeds from the event will go to the Kiwanis Club service fund to support children in need specifically and our community in general. To register for any of these events or if you have additional questions, visit PenMetParks.org or call 253.858.3400.
YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties | YMCAPKC.org Nothing says summer like a YMCA camp—day or overnight. There are just a few spots left in the late August day and overnight camps, so register now! Day Camp is held at Lake Helena in Port Orchard. Kids will spend the day outside playing camp games, learning to paddle kayaks and canoes, honing in on their archery skills and making crafts. Bonding with other kids their age is always a fun experience and is also great preparation for the upcoming school year. For an even more in-depth experience, kids can do overnight camp at Camp Seymour. Many of the same activities will take place, but kids get the added experience of nights away from home. There are expanded outdoor adventure and water sports, as well as fun evening and nighttime activities. Performing arts are also included during their time. For more information or help registering, call the YMCA at 253.884.3392. If you are still struggling to find openings, perhaps summer camp can be held in your own backyard. Gather your children’s friends and neighbors and, as the work day closes, the fun can begin. There are thousands of easy-to-follow DIY craft projects available online after a simple search. Set up a table or two and start creating! Have the kids plan an outside dinner and, depending on age and experience, why not let them set up, cook and clean for Mom and Dad. As a reward, you can set up the tent in the backyard for a campout at night. Check with your local fire district, but if small backyard cooking fires are still allowed, bust out the chocolate bars, marshmallows and graham crackers for the kids’ favorite summertime treat. If you missed out on registering for summer activities, don’t let the same thing happen for the upcoming fall and winter sports, classes and camps. Check far ahead and make a note of when registration opens so you can be sure to reserve your spot. Best of luck with the waning weeks of summer, and here’s to school starting soon!

UNSTOPPABLE The Story of Adrian Jones BY RACHEL KELLY
I
t’s April in Tampa at the United States Dragon Boat Federation (USDBF) national trials, and Adrian Jones doesn’t stand a chance. “I looked over to see the National Team paddling, and these guys are 60-plus and in incredible shape. In sync. And I have to unseat one of them to get on the team. I didn't have a prayer,” says Adrian, the previous Olympian competitor and National Club Crew champion. So when it came time for the 300-meter timed trial, Adrian was more than a little nervous. He had performed relatively well on the rowing machine test, but not overly so. In the trials, up to this point, he had performed average at best. He needed to be at the top.

It was a different setup for the 300 meter, with a new vessel, and in the last group of the day. Adrian was considerably off kilter. So, when a paddler was late, he took the extra few minutes to do a little practice. When the late-comer arrived, Adrian was far from confident. When the race began, other paddlers were quick to start. They pulled ahead. Adrian started slow and even—and was dead last. It was then that something clicked, and it all fell into place. His vision tunneled, and his body came into sync. Muscle memory and his continuous training kicked in; Adrian was in the zone. Through consistency he held his speed and pulled ahead. Against veteran racers, and current national Dragon Boat team members, Adrian pulled ahead and won by far. The seemingly insurmountable

challenges were overcome, and Adrian Jones finished third for overall time.
Over the past four years, Adrian began to look for greater and greater challenges.
Adrian has a long history in professional athletics. It took him seven years to qualify for the Olympics in 1980, which unfortunately were in Russia, and therefore boycotted by the United States. He kept himself in good shape throughout the years, as a natural athlete generally does. Then, four years ago, Adrian and his wife Anita moved to Gig Harbor from Vancouver, Washington. He was happily whiling away his retirement golfing four days a week. It was then that he was introduced to members in the community who wanted him to join the local Dragon Boating team, Gig Harbor Dragons. Reluctant to dedicate any time away from golf, he agreed to try it out when he wasn’t on the green. It was love at first try. That day, Adrian went out and bought all the equipment.
Ramping up his training required him to drop his beloved nightly pint of Ben and Jerry’s! However, the hard work and great sacrifices were to pay off; Adrian joined the WAM (Washington Masters) dragon boat club. With his team he won the National Championships in Colorado, earning a berth in the World Championships in France in 2020. Unfortunately, he was once again denied competition due to COVID cancellations. It was becoming a pattern.

Not yet discouraged, Adrian set his sights on the USDBF Team USA Dragon Boat Team. He was to go to further trials (after April), but it was postponed to August. Now that may not even happen. Hong Kong, the host of this year's races, is still suffering from the impacts of COVID-19.

ADRIAN JONES IS LIVING HIS BEST LIFE, EVERY DAY.
To allow for the races, they are enforcing strong restrictions on their athletes. So much so that the United States may not compete and is looking into the possibility of changing the location of the races. It’s all up in the air. In the meantime, Adrian continues to train in the firm hope that the races may happen. If they do, he wants to be ready. And if he is once again denied competition? There’s always the WAM Club Crew Nationals in October. Once again, his team, the Gig Harbor Dragons, hope to requalify for the 2022 World Club Crew Championships. Beyond that, Seville in 2023. Barring that, there’s always the drive to stay in shape and live a quality life during his retirement years. Hitting 62, Adrian isn’t getting any younger. If he’s not to do what he loves now, then when? Adrian Jones is living his best life, every day. 48

Adrian’s stepfather, who just celebrated his 100th birthday, is watching his son in anticipation. Adrian trains for him, so that if he wins his dad is here to see it. He trains for his wife, Anita, a dragon boat coach and loyal support. He trains for his son and daughter-in-law, who live in Gig Harbor. He trains for his team, who have quickly become his adopted family. He trains for his community, whose dragon boating team is fairly new and yet is garnering national attention. Adrian Jones trains for himself and his own health, but more than that, he is training for others. We are what gives him his drive. We are his motivation. We are the reason why he keeps going, regardless of restrictions and cancellations. Adrian Jones is training for us. And at the end of it all, when all the training is done and the games won, there’s always that pint of Ben and Jerry’s as his consolation prize.

An Unwavering Commitment to Excellent Patient Care Gig Harbor's premier primary care provider has a new name!
By Jillian Chandler
T
he office of Rainier Family Medicine has changed their name! The clinic will now be called Gig Harbor Primary Care. Same great clinic, same patient-centric health care.
What sparked the name change? According to Jessica Hopkins, “We wanted the clinic name to better reflect the services that we offer, as well as our ongoing commitment to the local community.” The community can rest assured knowing that though the name has changed, Gig Harbor Primary Care has not changed ownership or management, merged with another group or brought on new partners. “We are still the exact same clinic: same provider, same staff, and same unwavering commitment to patient care,” smiles Jessica. Gig Harbor Primary Care opened its doors in Gig Harbor in 2016, and for the past five years, owners Scot Fleshman, ARNP, FNP-BC and wife Jessica Hopkins have been providing superior primary care to the Gig Harbor community—with a holistic approach. “Our clinic offers a truly patient-centric and holistic approach to health care,” affirms Jessica. “We love being able to empower our patients with the tools and resources they need to optimize their health. We like to consider ourselves a part of each patient’s healthcare team.” Scot knew early on in his health-care career that he would eventually open his own practice, as he noticed a drastic shift away from patient-centric care that he was not willing to accept. “I witnessed decisions often made based on finances rather than the quality of patient care being provided,” he shares. When it comes to what Scot finds most rewarding about the work he does through his practice, it is knowing that he has his patients’ best interest in mind when treating them. “I get to put in as much time with a patient as needed, and I can carve time out of each day to do things that are crucial to a patient’s success,” he affirms. By provider and patient working together as a team, they are able to develop a plan the patient can follow to reach their health-care goals. “That is why I got into medicine, and I will do whatever it takes to provide the most thorough patient care experience possible.”

As a primary care provider (PCP), Scot is not limited in the services he is able to offer for primary care. And as an independently owned clinic with an extensive referral network, they have more freedom with their referrals than if they were part of a major medical group. “We can refer to the specialist who is going to be best for our patient’s needs, rather than being mandated to ‘keep the referral within a specific system,’” says Scot. Scot is a Gig Harbor native, while Jessica moved to Gig Harbor as a child. Despite residing in various cities during young adulthood, they always knew they would return home to Gig Harbor. “There is no community like it anywhere else in the world,” smiles Jessica. “The sense of connection and support is palpable and invigorating.”
As a practice, Gig Harbor Primary Care is involved in numerous community fundraisers, drives and events throughout the year. “We are strong supporters of schools and education and will support those efforts in any way possible,” says Jessica. Scot sits on the board of the Peninsula Schools Education Foundation and volunteers as a provider at the Key Free Clinic on the Key Peninsula, while Jessica currently holds two board positions; one with the Harbor Montessori and the other for the Alliance of Women Owned Businesses. Gig Harbor Primary Care is currently welcoming new patients and can accept most major medical insurance. Scot and Jessica understand that some patients may be nervous when making the decision to switch to a new primary care provider, thus they offer a no cost “meet and greet” for potential new patients to chat with Scot prior to making the decisions to switch.
Gig Harbor Primary Care has not changed ownership or management, merged with another group or brought on new partners. “We are still the exact same clinic: same provider, same staff, and same unwavering commitment to patient care." GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

PICKLEBALL
Let’s keep it fun and injury free!
By Molly Radonich, LAT, ATC
T
he fastest growing sport in America … What’s your guess? If you said pickleball, you would be correct! According to The Economist, pickleball participation grew by 21.3 percent from 2019, while the average activity level remained constant.
Pickleball was invented just next door in Bainbridge Island, Washington. It is a combination of tennis, wiffleball and badminton. It was made official in 1972, and there are now over 4 million pickleball athletes. You can play singles or doubles, and there are 11 points in a game, but you must win by 2. Pickleball athletes move through multiple planes of movement to successfully compete in this game. This requires successful movement patterns that require mobility, motor control and sports-specific
movements. Both the upper and lower body are highly involved in this sport and require many muscle groups. There are growing numbers of new patients who suffer injuries from this popular and growing sport. There are several different injuries which result from this loved sport. The most common are sprains, Achilles’ tendonitis; shoulder, neck, back pain; muscle strains of the quads and hamstrings, as well as wrist; pain and fractures. Depending on the injury, it could take a few weeks to heal, and others may take much longer. There are several ways to prevent injuries like these and others. Prevention may take a bit of extra effort but will be worth it in the long run. A proper warmup is key to help prevent injuries. If muscles don’t get sufficient blood flow before beginning activities with quick movements,

Warming up helps to lubricate the joints, increase elasticity of your muscles and prepare your heart rate and blood pressure for activity. Wearing the right footwear will help to prevent injuries like plantar fasciitis and ankle sprains. The right footwear consists of a shoe with proper arch supports, good grip on the bottom for lateral movements, and ankle support to prevent ankle sprains. There are specific court shoes you can purchase, but a good pair of tennis shoes with all of the above criteria should help keep your feet happy and healthy. Pickleball involves many different movement patterns and requires the ability to perform quick changes of speed and direction. It also involves lots of upper-body and lower-body movements at the same time. Cross training
can be very beneficial in training your muscles to be able to stand up to the challenges of pickleball. To prevent injury, it is beneficial to do strength training or body weight exercises involving different planes of movement. Agility drills are also a great way to cross train. Biking, swimming or running can be helpful cardiovascular exercises to improve your stamina on the court. There are many ways to prevent injuries from happening in the first place. Stretching helps to relieve tight muscles and prevent injury from lack of flexibility. Stretching can also help to relieve soreness from a hard workout. Preventative measures such as a Functional Movement Screen works to find potential problems and provide solutions before they become an issue.

KEEP COOL! AS THE TEMPERATURES RISE, PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST HEAT EXHAUSTION BY MISSI BALISON
S
ummer is in full swing, and as the summers here are short, you’ll want to get outside and enjoy as much of it as you can!
But when you are out hiking, gardening, biking, or out doing any of the amazing things the Pacific Northwest has to offer, you want to be careful that you don’t succumb to heat illness.
Independent Family Practice Clinics in Gig Harbor Michael Wingren MD, MPH
Heat Exhaustion Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to a high loss of the water and salt, usually through excessive sweating. Often those most prone to heat exhaustion are those who are elderly, have high blood pressure, and those working or exercising in a hot environment.
Comprehensive Physicals
It can be easy to step into heat exhaustion when you’re out and about having a good time or focused on a project in the yard. Be sure to pay attention to the symptoms before they sneak up on you.
Treatment of Acute Conditions
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
Management of Chronic Diseases
• Headache • Nausea • Dizziness • Weakness • Irritability • Thirst • Heavy sweating • Elevated body temperature • Decreased urine output

What to do: • If medical care is unavailable, call 911. • Remove yourself from the hot area and get liquids to drink. • Remove unnecessary clothing, including shoes and socks. • Cool yourself with cold compresses or wash your head, face and neck with cold water. • Take frequent sips of cool water. Heat stroke is the most serious of heat injuries, so you definitely don’t want to take symptoms
of heat stroke lightly. The main problem with heat stroke is that your organs can be damaged by prolonged high body temperatures. Signs of heat stroke: • High body temperature • Altered mental state or behavior (Confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures and coma can all result from heatstroke.) • Nausea or vomiting • Flushed skin • Rapid breathing • Headache • Altered sweating (Skin may be hot and dry to the touch, or you may start sweating abnormal amounts.) What to do: • Find a shady spot. • Remove excess clothing. • Place cold rags in these areas: back of neck, groin, armpits. And if you have access to a hose or cold packs, use those to cool down. • Find a fan or breeze to help your body cool off. • When feeling cooled off, head to a clinic or emergency room for medical evaluation and treatment. Get out there and enjoy this beautiful weather—but it is imperative that you keep an eye on things and listen to your body. FINDING ENGAGEMENT IN SENIORS WITH COGNITIVE DECLINE READING, PUZZLES AND MUSIC CAN AWAKEN THE MIND By Lara Coutu, Executive Director, Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence
I
f you have a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, there are many heartbreaks you endure in the journey as their disease progresses. One of the hardest is when their condition takes away pieces of who that person is: Maybe your father was a terrific piano player, or perhaps your mom ruled the local bowling lanes in her Wednesday night league. It’s those activities and passions that make up a big part of who we are, and when they aren’t available to a loved one anymore, it can be difficult to process. If you have a loved one living with cognitive decline, there are ways to start engaging with them in new ways to help maintain a connection. A few options include: • Reading: If your loved one has a favorite book, reading aloud to them is a great way to stimulate their mind. It’s also an activity a grandchild can participate in by reading to their grandparent. • Puzzles: Whether it’s jigsaw puzzles, word searches or crosswords, puzzles exercise both sides of the brain and improve spatial reasoning. • Music: Sing and dance the day away with your loved one’s favorite songs. Many seniors with cognitive decline can still remember song lyrics, as the part of the brain where they’re stored is often spared from the disease. Upcoming Webinar to Focus on Purposeful Engagement If your loved one may need memory care, at Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence, we believe in engaging our residents in a variety of different programming. We have an ever-changing calendar of activities and events designed to find ways to keep their minds and spirits open to both old and new activities. With that in mind, we’ll be holding a free webinar with noted Alzheimer’s disease and dementia expert David Troxel, MPH, on Tuesday, August 24, at 2pm Pacific Time. If you have a loved one with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia, or a loved one living with us now, it will be a great opportunity to see what engagement truly means.

BOTOX ® THE MIRACLE TREATMENT FOR WRINKLES BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN
A
ccording to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 2 million Botox® treatments were carried out in 2019, and that number has continued to rise. Considered the most common cosmetic intervention, and with good reason, this miracle treatment can take years off your appearance and prevent the signs of aging in a quick (we’re talking fiveminute) appointment. With FDA approval to treat moderate to severe wrinkles in the frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines, and a 92 percent “worth it” rating from consumers, this treatment may be just what you are looking for to age gracefully and look as young as you feel. Below we break down your most common questions. What is Botox®? Botox® is a safe, purified, FDA-approved protein that relaxes and softens the muscles responsible for causing frown lines, creases between the brows, around the eyes (crow’s feet), and worry lines in the forehead. Years of muscle use in our faces—from smiling, squinting, stressing— create what begin as fine lines, and deepen over time. Botox® can heal that dermal cracking or can be used preventatively to help deter their deepening. How much does Botox® cost? Botox® pricing varies from clinic and region, and your total price depends on what areas you are treating and the number of units each individual needs. To treat the area in between the eyebrows (a.k.a. frown lines) is typically $240 to $300; the forehead is typically $150 to $180; and crow’s feet are typically $300 to $450. It is best to schedule a consultation with your aesthetic provider to determine the appropriate dosing and cost for your individualized treatment. How long does Botox® last? You can expect to notice a more youthful, relaxed appearance within two to 14 days, and results last three to four months. Some clients
find that with consistent treatments they get longer-lasting results. How long will my appointment take? Botox® appointments are quick and easy. Your initial appointment will take approximately 30 minutes to review medical forms, discuss your goals with your provider, and develop a treatment plan. After your first visit, your subsequent visits are generally quick and take only a few minutes. Does Botox® hurt? Most patients describe Botox as painless. A very tiny needle is used to inject Botox® in strategic muscles on the face, and techniques are used to make the treatment comfortable. If you are concerned about pain or discomfort, talk to your provider prior to treatment to discuss pain relieving modalities such as topical numbing cream and/or ice.
HEALTHY SKIN
IS ALWAYS IN
Is there any downtime or recovery? Botox® is generally considered a “no social downtime” treatment. Most patients leave their appointment with small pink bumps where Botox was injected, and these generally subside in 15 minutes. Bruising is a possibility. Patients are asked to avoid vigorous exercise and facial massage for 24 hours after treatment. When should I start Botox®? There is not a set age when one should start Botox®. Once you notice static lines (the lines that appear on the face at rest), you can begin to speak to your aesthetic provider about treatment to soften the lines and prevent them from getting worse. When treatment is started early, the static lines can often be reversed. After they have been present for years, they can be more difficult to diminish.

LOCALS ANSWER THE CALL TO SAVE
OUR WATERWAYS SMALL ACTIONS EFFECT CHANGE IN OUR GREATER WORLD
BY RACHEL KELLY
T
here are some things that we can’t do alone. There are some things that we were made to face together, as a community, as a state, or as a people. Things like raising our families, or building safe neighborhoods, we face together. There are some problems that require a whole world to come together to ensure success. Large problems usually involve a lot of people, and it takes a lot of people to solve them. Problems like global pollution and global warming are big problems. Problems that we can’t solve on our own. But together, united by our common humanity, we can. “It’s important to think about the way we live and its impact on the planet,” says Tara Galuska of the Washington Fish and Wildlife. And there are many such impacts. We can see those impacts locally, on our beaches and especially in our waterways. We can see the impacts we have on rivers through the salmon and the residents they support, such as bears. Another such resident is the Southern Orca, resident of the Puget Sound and Canada, which survives off of Chinook salmon. Salmon, in turn, survives off of krill. Krill survives off phytoplankton. There is currently estimated to be only 75 Southern Orca left in the whole swath of salt water that exists from the Washington Sound up to the Strait of San Juan de Fuca. Their low numbers, coupled with their dependence on the health of the local waters, makes them an endangered species.

The declining numbers of Southern Orca illustrates the circular pattern of the effects of our actions on the world, beginning with the global rise in temperatures. Scientists believe this is due to an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide. There is still a lot of research being done on exactly why this is happening, but it is apparent that our world is changing. This change is affecting our local residents, animals and humans alike. According to the Southern Resident Orca Task Force, the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has stayed below 300 parts per million prior to 1950. Since then, our carbon dioxide has increased to 405 parts per million. This has caused a one-degree Celsius increase in global temperatures since pre-industrial levels, suggesting that industrialization and pollution plays a part in the health of our Earth. Twenty-five percent of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is absorbed by the ocean, causing an increase in ocean acidification. Algae, often seen in freshwater ponds, lakes and basins across Washington and Idaho, grows plentiful in order to consume the carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. The ocean’s acidification makes an inhospitable environment to most species aside from algae, which adapts to grow in the ocean. Like a fail safe for an imbalance in the atmosphere, algae grow wild, fed by an overproduction of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is often present due to various levels of pollution, from untreated sewage to various inhospitable

factories. Unfortunately, large amounts of algae are toxic to all fresh and saltwater species. The one-degree Celsius rise in global temperatures also affects our streams and lakes, as snow melt decreases every year. The re-circulated warm water makes for warmer winter lakes and rivers, and dryer summer river beds. Occasionally, a rise in warm winter waters causes an overabundance of rain versus snow, increasing sediment flow and mudslides. The increased rain also runs into our drains, occasionally overwhelming our water treatment plants. Which means that sewage dumps into our ocean. More algae grows. According to scientifically backed collected data of Washington Fish and Wildlife, major effects from climate change will be seen as soon as 2030. If conditions continue as they have been, 2030 through 2052 will see a 1.5-degree Celsius increase, which will result in the following conditions: a 67 percent increase in days over 90 degrees, 38 percent decrease in snowpack, 16 percent increase in winter streamflow, and a 23 percent decrease in summer streamflow. To lower these temperatures, and to decrease their overall effects, we must cut our carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2030. Our changing rivers affect salmon, who spawn in rivers in the spring. They lay their eggs in the gravel, from which alevins emerge one to three months after spawning. Fry then grow from alevins, then develop into smolt. Smolt then migrate to the ocean, where they grow into adults and live for up to four years. All the combined effects of pollution and carbon dioxide disturb the breeding grounds of our salmon at all their various developmental levels. Increased flooding impacts the salmon eggs and alevins. Reduced spring flows affect the fry and smolt. The increased algae in our oceans kill the zooplankton on which the herring and other fish feed, in turn on which the salmon feed. Salmon is considered a keystone species, meaning that they are essential for the survival of a variety of wildlife. As their rate of survival drops, the underlying food web becomes unstable. This is why the Orca are showing up less and less in Pacific Northwest waters, and why the health of our fresh water suffers. When salmon suffer, we all suffer. And so, our actions come full circle.

Our seemingly small actions that we, as a people, do on the daily affect the greater world. Trash from our picnics on the beach, the chemicals that we use in our cleaners, the medications that we dispose of, waste water, improper drainage and everyday food waste all play a part in pollution. Individually, our actions are small. But together, they have a big impact. Everything eventually ends up in our waterways, and in turn runs into the oceans. Our Earth is a complicated web of interconnected pieces, of which we are also a part of. “What we do as an individual and as a society to reduce global warming and to improve water quality for these majestic creatures also supports a better ecosystem for humans,” says Tara. This means that any movement toward change is a win-win. The Orca are especially sensitive to any environmental changes, as are all endangered species, which is why their numbers have been in steady decline in our waterways. Individuals on land and water play a large part in our Earth’s health, but so do large companies whose ships produce a lot of emissions. Noting the sensitivity that Orca and other wildlife have toward our actions in the water, TOTE Maritime is one company that has decided to do something about it. Alaskan fishermen have long begun their spring season in the southern part of Washington’s Puget Sound, and still leave every year to fish for the summer season. As the polar ice melts, and less and less re-freezes every winter, fishermen and shipping companies are able to go further and further north. Many ships and fishermen are advised to be whale wise as they expand their reach into the northern waters. Ships are advised to keep their distance from whales, and to steer away from fishing in their feeding waters. There are even flags that local ships hoist to alert other ships and boats as to the presence of whales. In 2010, the coastal waters of North America were deemed emission control areas. Most companies simply adhere to the bare minimum, adhering to the emission controls and occasionally following Whale Wise protocol. TOTE Maritime Alaska is one such company that moves up and down the northern seas. The leader in the industry in environmental practices, they chose to respond to the emission controls in a way that went above the bar for the safety of our coastal species. TOTE Maritime Alaska invested in liquified natural gas. In partnership with Puget Sound Energy, which is known for their groundbreaking and accessible environmental activism, TOTE Maritime Alaska outfitted its Orca class vessels to run on liquified natural gas. Liquified natural gas decreases particulate matter by 99 percent, vessel sulfur emissions by 98 percent, and nitrogen oxides by 91 percent. These numbers are groundbreaking. Through decreasing the waste that ships normally dump into the waters, TOTE Maritime Alaska has made some of the most environmentally friendly ships in the world,

showing the world once again just how unique the Pacific Northwest is. It is actions such as these that greatly affect our waters and the sensitive wildlife that live in it. Large companies, such as shipping and fishing companies, play a direct part in keeping our waterways clean by the ways that they choose to conduct business. TOTE Maritime Alaska is especially inspirational in their refusal to go along with the status quo, and the hope is that other companies will follow suit. In the face of such incredible effort, we must do the same. We must allow ourselves the flexibility of positive change. Maybe not all at once, but perhaps little by little. Even the smallest steps can have a big impact. Especially when they inspire others to make steps as well. Little by little, greater change happens. There’s no better example of what a community can do when it comes together than what we see here, in the Pacific Northwest. We can and do reduce the waste that goes in our waterways, by participating in the reduction of litter or washing our cars in professional car washes (that have proper disposal techniques). We can also conserve the water that we use, treating it as the precious resource that it is. We 66

can reduce our carbon footprint by reducing our car use, from riding bikes to riding public transport. We can implement the wise use of our resources, reducing food waste by planning ahead and composting. Using products with fewer chemicals not only betters our overall health but benefits the health of our world. Individually we are small people, with a small impact. We live as people of character by our

individual everyday decisions. Together we live as part of a delicate web called “community,” where each impacts the other. As such, our daily decisions of character make small dents in what our world looks like as a whole. Perhaps in our own small way we will inspire others to go upstream against apathy. It is in these seemingly small everyday acts that we make big changes, first changing ourselves until we have all changed together. Global impact comes full circle, into our backyards. Into the realm of personal responsibility. As much as we want to pretend that global problems are beyond our reach, it’s the quality of our local watershed and the health of our resident species that speak to just how much we are doing to preserve its health. When it comes to saving our waterways, we must answer the call to responsible living. Just like TOTE Maritime Alaska is doing. Just like the Southern Resident Orca Task Force. Just like us, who choose to not go it alone. It is in this fearless spirit of innovation that we discover that the world is capable of change.

iving in a region with all four of the seasons inspires the need for strategic seasonal shopping. As the heat of the Pacific Northwest summer begins to fade into shorter, cooler days, key transitional pieces will become wardrobe essentials. Light pieces that carry well into fall’s early days are a great way to extend your summer wardrobe while staying seasonally chic. This month, shop your local boutiques for summery items with staying power. Here, you’ll find shopping inspiration through a selection of items to look for as you shop the Northwest’s seasonal styles. Sweater vests. One of the season’s easiest ways to add a layer is the sweater vest! You’ll notice sweater vests and sleeveless knits back in style as we come closer to fall. They’re perfect as easy pieces to wear on their own as a sleeveless sweater, or to layer over a crisp white button-down as the temperatures drop. White button-down shirts. If you don’t have that crisp white button-down in your wardrobe yet, now is the time to add one, as it’s sure to be a staple in the coming months. Light enough to wear on its own or to layer under a cardigan, jacket, sweater vest or suit jacket, the crisp white shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you’ll pick up this season. While temperatures stay hot, mix and match the top with your favorite shorts and skirts to stay cool. Crop tops. Don’t put away your summer crop tops just yet! These hot-weather staples can keep you stylish in the transition to autumn. Keep them to spice up a night out, as they are easily covered under a jacket in the cooler evening temperatures, or keep them peeking through light layers for a fun weekend look. Bonus style points for crop tops in fun fabrics and leathers. Neutral maxis. Maxi dresses made their comeback this year, and they are here to stay through the autumn. Keep your neutral-toned maxi dresses for the fall—think creamcolored shirt dresses paired with knee-high boots, or military-inspired greens with ankle boots. Maxi dresses are an easy way to add a feminine touch to your autumn days. Jumpsuits. Similar to the maxi dresses, jumpsuits are an easy way to quickly pull together a chic outfit. An excellent combination of fashionable and functional, jumpsuits carry well GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

into fall festivities. From satin jumpsuits to dress up a night out, to military-style jumpsuits making a statement in the daytime, you can easily layer them over a long-sleeve shirt or underneath a wool coat on a cooler day.
Extra-strappy sandals. Keep your most fun, dramatic sandals in the rotation this month, as they’re poised to become a fall evening essential. Dressier sandals with far-reaching straps are set to take you into autumn soirees, events and dinner parties.
White baby tees. That little white tee in your closet might be of bigger value than you realize. Cropped tops have been in style all year, and that doesn’t stop at T-shirts. Keep your fitted white “baby tee” as the ultimate base layer, then build an outfit around it based on your plans. White tees are easily paired with just about everything: this season’s carpenter pants, trousers, destroyed jeans and maxi skirts, with additional warmth brought by cardigans, denim, leather, or suit jackets.
Where to Shop
Cropped sweatshirts. Those cropped sweaters you kept around for the late nights coming home from the beach, lingering around a bonfire, or the occasional rainy day, are going to be one of the best pieces to keep around for autumn. Cropped sweatshirts can range from a simple, solid color, to a retro-inspired statement piece. Get creative with your layers, and keep them in stock as a go-to piece this season. Slouchy jeans. The comfort promised by “boyfriend” jeans and “mom” jeans alike has been deservedly embraced. These flattering, yet flexible, jeans are on the slouchier side, making them easy for the transition not only between seasons, but between day to night and work to weekend. As they fit well with just about any selection of shoe, they’re easily taken from sandal weather into boot weather. Floral prints. Flowers will continue to color and brighten our wardrobes well into the upcoming months. Keep your light, summery florals to add a burst of romantic energy to your fall outfits. You’ll see florals stay on boutique shelves in the form of patterned mini dresses, accessories, printed suits and more. 72

ith the busyness of our everyday lives, and the many activities and adventures we’re enjoying during the warmer months, the last thing we want to worry about is putting on our makeup. How nice would it be to wash your face in the morning, moisturize, put on a little lip gloss and head out the door, ready to embark on your day? There’s no better time than the present to embrace your natural beauty. Rather than covering up your face with multiple products, spending too much time contouring and enhancing, treat your skin to a health and beauty regimen to keep it glowing and looking great, without the need to cover it up. With the help of one of our beauty experts, who has years in the aesthetics field, we have compiled some simple ways you can keep your face looking fresh and natural throughout the summer months and as you transition into the fall. It’s simple! Get ready to make your daily facial routine one that is easy and not time invasive. And you’ll be ready to head out the door glowing! Take a read to help bring your skin-care and beauty routine to the next level! From what you put in your body to what you apply onto it greatly affects your skin, its appearance and glow. And it starts the moment you wake up. After a long night’s rest, it is important to cleanse your face in order to remove excess oil and create a clean canvas for what you put on your skin. Be sure to pat dry with a clean, dry towel. Now that you’re fresh faced, the most important must-have product to apply is sunscreen. You can eliminate makeup— the concealer, foundation and other products—by choosing and applying a tinted sunscreen. “This provides light coverage for a flawless and effortless look,” shares Bri Williams, RN, BSN at Refined Aesthetics Med Spa in Sandpoint, Idaho. “You can use all the best products in a 10-step skin-care regimen, but if you aren’t protecting your skin, it is all for nothing,” she shares. “The number one thing you can do for your skin is wear sunscreen. UV exposure is the number one cause of premature aging and leads to skin cancer. It is imperative that you protect your skin by applying SPF daily and reapply throughout the day.” She recommends finding a sunscreen that does double duty; one that not only protects your skin from UV damage but also packs in antioxidants to repair and rejuvenate the skin. “My favorite is Total Defense and Repair by SkinMedica, and it is available in tinted and non-tinted.”

Apply a light coat of waterproof mascara, and a nude—or colored—lip gloss, and you’ll be on your way. You can touch up your look as needed throughout the day by reapplying sunscreen in one step with a powdered SPF. Bri recommends Sunforgettable Broad Spectrum SPF 30 by ColorScience. At the end of the day, no matter how exhausted you might be, it is important that you wash your face before bed. fine lines, to preventing wrinkles, dark spots and blemishes. Also opt to treat yourself once a week or every other week to a natural face mask to maintain your skin’s health. Other factors that many seem to forget is one’s lifestyle. It is imperative to drink plenty of water to keep your body and skin hydrated. Getting enough sleep (yes, eight hours is ideal) to allow your body the time to repair and heal itself is also important. Exercise is a must, aiding in releasing toxins of the body as you sweat. Eat foods high in vitamins C, E and beta-carotene, which help to nourish your skin.
“Your skin cells turnover during the night to regenerate, and this process is impaired if your face is not clean,” shares Bri. She adds that there are a number of beneficial products that can be applied before bed (from antioxidants, moisturizers and growth factors, to retinol, pigment correctors and more), but at the very least be sure to use an antioxidant to protect from the environmental exposures that are heightened in the summer and a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

I know, I know, sounds expensive, right? No, actually. Buy yourself something cheap, just a simple tee for example. Then have it tailored. Most shirts, no matter the company or expense, are made of pretty much the same materials. The key is how they fit you. Simple tailor jobs cost $10 to $15, but the results are one of a kind. Your tailored shirts, pants or dresses will automatically become your favorite pieces, simply because they fit perfectly. Not only will you look good, but you’ll feel comfortable. Comfort equates to confidence. Simple tailoring is the way to go.

Thrift stores are where all the vintage goodies are. Hidden under grandma’s matching tracksuits and the moo moos are some original Star Wars custom tees, lace-up heeled boots, retro skates and silk kimonos. The key is to keep your mind open. Don’t go in for something specific—go in to discover. Don’t be afraid to jump into the fray. You will come out with a pile of goodies for ten bucks.

Very few of us can boast about our creative abilities. It’s true that our grandmothers made their own clothes, but most of us don’t have those skills anymore. And the time! We’ve got no time. However, did you know that many homemade beauty products use only three ingredients, are inexpensive, and work better than your store-bought counterpart? For instance, for a detoxifying body scrub, use equal parts (used) coffee grounds, sugar and coconut oil. The coconut oil provides the sheen, the sugar the scrub, and the coffee the lift. There are tons of simple body-care recipes online. When it comes to skin and hair care, the best things are often the easiest— and inexpensive.

When buying on a budget, buy things that you feel comfortable using in all kinds of situations. Unless, of course, you feel that you’ve found that one-of-akind piece, go simple when shopping. Buy pieces that are versatile for all sorts of situations. The yoga pants that double as work clothes. The shoes that go well with dresses and jeans. The solid green mini dress that works just as well on the beach as it does for a night out on the town. That eye shadow that you know would play up your eyes regardless of where you go. Style is every day, and your clothes and accessories should be too.

Buying in solid colors is a well-kept style secret for the on-the-budget buyer. Keeping it simple, in colors that amplify your natural positive features, allows for mixing and matching. Favorites in solid colors, or muted styles, allow for a do over with another outfit—no one can even tell that you are wearing it again. Get your flash of color in your accessories, whether it be those impulsebuy red boots or that Etsy jewelry piece. Key accessories dress up that simple black jumper or everyday jeans into a multi-wear fashion-affair.
When embracing style on a budget, it’s important that what you buy looks right and fits well. Don’t buy according to someone else’s style; buy what fits your body and your look. Know your face type for makeup and jewelry accents. Buy colors that complement or play up your complexion. Buy clothing that fits your body type and highlights the parts of you that make you feel especially confident. What works for someone else may not work for you, and what works for you may not work for someone else. Style is just another way to celebrate what makes you unique.

ENJOY A VIBRANT DOWNTOWN, RIVERWALK AND WORLD-CLASS BEACHES Charming Wilmington, North Carolina By Marguerite Cleveland
W
ilmington, North Carolina, is less known as a destination than its more famous Southern neighbors Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, and that is its charm. You won’t find the hordes of tourists; only those in the know about this vibrant city on the banks of the Cape Fear River. Just a short drive from downtown Wilmington you will find some great beaches, each with its own unique vibe.
Where to Stay
Downtown has a variety of places to stay, but you can’t beat the Front Street Inn for its location. It is just a short walk to the shops, restaurants and lively nightlife that abounds downtown. This cute Inn has onsite parking—a plus when downtown. There are a variety of rooms, and some are on the smaller size, but there are public spaces you can utilize. This is an historic hotel, so you won’t have all the amenities of a large chain hotel, but its charm and location more than make up for it. Breakfast is included in the morning. Another option is the Hampton Inn Wilmington-University Area/Smith Creek Station, which has a great location that is close to both downtown and the beaches. Rates include breakfast.

YOU WON’T FIND THE HORDES OF TOURISTS; ONLY THOSE IN THE KNOW ABOUT THIS VIBRANT CITY ON THE BANKS OF THE CAPE FEAR RIVER.
Where to Eat Wilmington has an eclectic dining scene, with a bounty of local seafood and area farms providing fresh produce to the city’s restaurants. There is also the Gullah Geechee influence from the Africans who were enslaved in the area. If you are new to Southern dining, make sure to try Pimento Cheese. This yummy spread is now featured on many menus as a starter and is served with crisp lavash crackers. The local oysters are so good they even have their own trail. Shrimp and Grits are a staple of low-country cuisine, and just about every restaurant you go to has its own recipe. PinPoint Restaurant is located downtown and is the epitome of farm to table with the freshest bounty from local farmers, fishermen, oystermen and shrimpers. Their names are on the menu. Speaking of menus, it changes every day to reflect what fresh ingredients are available. You will find a catch of the day, chicken, beef and pork dishes, as well as a vegetarian entrée. Each one is prepared utilizing the fresh produce and herbs. On the menu during my visit was hogfish, which must be spear caught. It eats crustaceans, so the meat has a sweet richness to it. Local Carrots was the name of a shareable plate layered with purple carrot hummus, topped with a variety of carrots, herbs and seasoning. It is a unique dish and highlights the types of food the chef makes. The Pilot House is one of the oldest restaurants in the downtown area and has a huge local following. Located overlooking the Cape Fear River, it is a lovely venue to dine at. The menu is heavy on fresh seafood and traditional Southern dishes, but the chef ’s not afraid to be creative. For example, the Shrimp and Grits include collard greens, and to keep it from becoming a soupy mess, a fried grits cake is the base of this dish. It soaks up the jus from the greens, and with the shrimp and other ingredients is such a unique take on this traditional Southern recipe. Out on the boardwalk at Carolina Beach, make sure to stop at Britt’s Donuts. It has been a beach staple since 1939. The donuts are simple yeast donuts with a glaze that is not too sweet. They sell so many that your order is hot from the fryer. So yummy! Also in this area is the Fat Pelican, one of the GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

diviest dive bars in the United States. This place is wild at night, but if you stop in when they first open, you will have the place to yourself. It is known for its huge walk-in cooler. You go in and choose your beverage from canned beers and other alcoholic beverages, and the bartender will ring you up. What to Do Wilmington, with its surrounding beaches, provides a plethora of things to do. Explore the downtown area and visit the many local shops, restaurants and museums. The newly revitalized Riverwalk is a lovely place to stroll with cute little pocket gardens and views of the Cape Fear River. A one-hour river cruise on the Henrietta is a great way to learn a bit about the history of the area and some fun, local anecdotes. A must stop is Cape Fear Rum Cakes on Front Street. This family owned business is kicking out some seriously good cakes. The rum keeps them moist and helps preserve the cakes in a vacuum seal for six months. There are three sizes available, and the 5-ounce size is enough for one to two people and makes a perfect gift. Nothing on the shelves is older than a day or two because they are selling as fast as they make them. Plan to spend a full day out at the Fort Fisher area. In the morning, do a beach hike along the Basin Trail with views of the ocean before it gets too hot. Then tour the North Carolina Aquariums with its state-of-the-art exhibits. The otters are always popular, as well as the sharks in the big tank. Don’t miss the outside trails with some beautiful artwork. For lunch, either pack a picnic or dine at the café at the aquarium. After lunch, explore the Fort Fisher Museum and learn about this Civil War site. Then walk around the outside exhibits to see the remnants of the fort. A beach day is a must while visiting this area. Kure Beach is a quieter beach popular with retirees and families. Wrightsville Beach is bustling and more of a challenge to find parking. At Carolina Beach, you will find the boardwalk with lots of shops and amusement park rides. There is really something for everyone. Each beach also has fishing piers where you can rent fishing equipment.

Insider Tip: Make sure to read the parking signs. The side street parking by shops and restaurants is usually two hours and turns over more frequently. The lots have all-day parking options. All parking is fee based. You can download an app to make the process easier. Some parking meters have swipers for credit cards. Airlie Gardens is a beautifully landscaped coastal south garden with 67 acres of formal gardens and walking paths. The crown jewel of the gardens is the Airlie Oak, which is a Southern Live Oak tree almost 500 years old. It sits amidst an expansive lawn surrounded by azalea bushes. Pick up a self-guided walking tour brochure at the entrance. Explore more than a dozen gardens including the Pergola, Minnie Evans Bottle Chapel, a seasonal butterfly house and much more. With its revitalized downtown, Riverwalk, and charming walkable historic district, as well as the spectacular beaches, Wilmington is the perfect vacation destination.

Gig Harbor’s Historic Netsheds
A
s you make your way around Gig Harbor, you can't help but notice the historic netsheds found throughout the town along the water’s edge, and are best viewed from the water. Netsheds first appeared along the waterfront beginning as early as 1910. These simple structures were used by local fishermen to store their fishing gear—and nets. Over the years, as the town grew and new developments and commercial marinas appeared, many of these netsheds were displaced. Though just 17 remain along the western shoreline today, Gig Harbor Bay still boasts the largest inventory of historic netsheds on the Puget Sound. Treasured relics to remember the community's cultural heritage and economic development, these netsheds provide an architectural connection between the community and what was once one of the most successful fishing fleets on the West Coast. |
Explore by Water
Have a Ball
Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.
Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.
Support Local
Make Friends
Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.
Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.
Tip a Glass
Take a Look Back
Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.
Share a Plate
Tee Up
Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.
Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.
Walk on the Wild Side
Capture the Moment
Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.
In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

JALAPEÑO POPPERS WITH BACON Recipe Courtesy of Tina VanDenHeuvel You can follow Tina @madebetterforyou on Instagram
INGREDIENTS: 12 jalapeños 1 8-oz. package bacon, each piece cut into thirds 2 8-oz. blocks cream cheese, softened 6 oz. Mexican-blend cheese, shredded 2 jalapeños, seeded and diced 1 tbsp. cumin 2 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper
METHOD: • Preheat your oven to 400˚F. Spray a broiler pan, or cover a sheet pan with aluminum foil, and place a wire rack on top with non-stick cooking spray. Set it aside for later. • Start by prepping the jalapeños using a chef’s knife to cut off the stems, and cut the jalapeños in half lengthwise. Then, use a spoon to scrape out all the seeds and the white membrane inside the pepper. You can discard the seeds once you’re done or keep a few to add to the cream cheese mixture if you like it extra hot. • In a medium-size mixing bowl, mix together the cream cheese, cheese, jalapeños and seasonings. Fill each jalapeño with the mix. • Cut bacon strips into thirds and lay a piece on top of the cream cheese mix. Once you have filled and topped all the jalapeños with bacon, place them in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until bacon is done. • Let cool before serving. Enjoy!

AN AFTERNOON OF FUN
FOR A GREAT CAUSE FOURTH ANNUAL HOGS, DOGS AND RODS MOTORCYCLE & CAR SHOW BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
S
aturday, August 28, will mark the fourth Annual Hogs, Dogs and Rods Motorcycle & Car Show. Held noon to 5pm at the Gig Harbor Eagles (4425 Burnham Drive in Gig Harbor), everyone is sure to enjoy an afternoon at this “old-fashion car show,” featuring cool bikes and cars, pinup/pageant girls, food and live music—and, of course, community. “Our community needs to catch up on fun,” smiles Kathy Black, organizer and creator of the event. “The Gig Harbor Eagles only hosts two open houses all year long, and this is a chance to see how much we do as a Fraternity and what we're all about—which is giving back.” The event, which is open to both members and non-members alike, is free to attend, though all donations are greatly appreciated and will benefit the Northwest Kidney Centers for support, transportation and education. There will be a membership drive during the event as well; a great opportunity for the community to find out more about the organization.

And this event isn’t just for the grownups! “Kids love to dance and look at Heroes on Harleys and eat warm pretzels from our neighbor Hy lu Hee Hee, and hot dogs and corn dogs!” shares Kathy. “Kids can also get their pictures taken next to cool cars and lovely timeless vintage beauties.” There will be live music by the Big Bear Band all afternoon to accompany the festivities. “Gig Harbor is used to unique, artsy, sassy, and high-energy historic, wholesome, nostalgic fun,” says Kathy. “We are at full capacity for bikes and cars, and the vintage-style pinup girls are excited to have their bios read to the audience.” To be part of it all, be sure to mark your calendars for August 28 and head on down to the Gig Harbor Eagles! For additional information, call Kathy Black at 253.301.9345 or email kathygh13@gmail.com.
