PUBLISHER Christmas All Year Long There is a special feeling in the air. People are cheerful. Stores are buzzing with activity. Christmas music is lightening the mood. We look forward to setting time aside to gather with friends and family, cherishing those relationships that mean the most to us. We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Many always look forward in anticipation to this time of year. So why not make it a point to live with Christmas in our hearts all year long? Each month set some time aside for family traditions. Whether it is as simple as a family dinner out or staying home on a Friday night and having a game night with the kids, tradition is something that our children can look back on with fond memories. You can even take it a step further and integrate tradition with the act of giving. After all, nothing brings happiness to one’s heart like knowing you have made a positive difference in someone else’s life. Maybe take your family to volunteer once a month at a local soup kitchen. Or take time to shop and drop some food to the food bank. Possibly your church is in need of some volunteer services. Whatever you decide, I am sure with a commitment to establish year long traditions, you will feel Christmas in your heart all year long. A very Merry Christmas from those of us at Living Local. Take time to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Reason for the Season! Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

The Intentional Marriage COMMITTING TO A MUTUAL, LIFELONG JOURNEY
BY JOY PETERSON
Every relationship has an underlying “contract,” conscious or unconscious. In most cases, couples allow it to be drafted by default; a precedent set on unexamined behaviors, expectations and assumptions. Early in a relationship, people are reluctant to confront minor irritants and issues. As a relationship becomes committed, patterns, assumptions and expectations are already established, without scrutiny and mutual agreement. An intentional marriage commits to a mutual voyage lasting a lifetime, come what may. It is a journey toward understanding yourselves and one another, honoring the best of what already exists in your marriage, and celebrating what is exceptional in your intentions and your actions. You concentrate on what you do well and identify what you want to do differently. A lasting marriage is based on courage, selfknowledge and perseverance. It leads to a life built on a consciously designed foundation of shared love, values and spiritual practices. Partnership is at the core of a great marriage. A lush and lively marriage requires a clear understanding of partnership – which marriage is in the eyes of the law – and mastering the skills that make partnerships successful. The collateral benefits of a partnership marriage has far-reaching effects. When you develop these skills for the sake of marriage, you become more effective parents, have better relationships in the workplace and every area of life.
mutual respect for both masculine and feminine perspectives on issues and decisions within marriage and family are not duplicated in any other setting or institution in our lives. In order for the future to hold the promise of a better world, our sons and daughters need to be equal partners, not only in marriage, but equal voice and opportunity in career, in governance, in religion, in education, in the workplace and in the law. Sooner or later marriage exposes your wounds, your losses, your flaws and your longings. A partnership marriage creates a safe and trusting environment that facilitates growth and development in both partners. It increases your capacity for love and forgiveness. You learn to push beyond your capacity for selflessness and constancy. You never truly realize your emotional depths until you are in a relationship that is more important to you than your own life. Building a life with another and bearing children takes you to the very heart of your being where the seeds of the wisdom dwell if you surrender everything to love. Joy Evans Peterson, M.A. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Author of “22 Myths of Divorce” and “Discovering A Dynamic Marriage.” DiscoveringDynamicMarriage.com.

Finding Clarity A MOST INTERESTING GIFT
BY DEBORAH OLIVE
What do you still want to accomplish by the end of year? Is it related to your work? Or perhaps it’s more personal? What one or two accomplishments, if wrapped in a package and waiting for you Christmas morning, would absolutely make your year? Why not take a moment to jot down your response?
incredibly focused and efficient. At the end of any given day, I’d done a lot. Like many in corporate America, I continued to create greater and greater expectations. We do this in our personal lives as well. Working harder produces more and raises expectations. This means working even harder in an ever-upward spiral.
There’s tremendous power in clarity. So many of my clients tell me they think about their goals, but they don’t write them down. They also report that after writing their vision, they feel empowered, focused and energized, which is consistent with a Harvard study that shows those who write their goals down are 96 percent more likely to achieve them. That’s significant.
Working harder is part of our culture.
If you’re crystal clear on what you’d like to accomplish by the end of the year, congratulations! You’re among a small percentage. If you’re vague on what you’d like to complete, I invite you to put your ideas on paper until you are satisfied with your clarity.
Why? Have you found yourself working harder and harder and still not achieving what you’d really like? Have you paused to wonder why that is?
Once you know on WHAT you want and you believe you can have it, the next question is to identify HOW to accomplish this. Do you believe that if you tried just a little bit harder you could do a whole lot better? There was a time in my life when my answer was “Yes.” I’d pack more on my calendar. I became

I’m not against hard work. In fact, I’m absolutely for taking action. But have you found yourself working harder and harder and still not achieving what you’d really like? Have you paused to wonder why that is? Well known educator and author Stephen Covey shared a story of a salesman trying to meet his third quarter goal. He flew to Chicago where he had a big sales opportunity. The plane was late. Worried he’d be late for his appointment, he rushed to the rental car agency, signed the contract, grabbed the keys and demanded a map. Yes, our story takes place before GPS was available. This salesman rushed off, trying to find his way while driving down the freeway. He was struggling. The roads didn’t make sense. He’d get off the freeway to look at his map. Then he’d drive. He became more and more flustered, telling himself that if he missed this appointment, his whole third quarter – and maybe his job – would fall through the cracks. In the midst of his frustration, he finally said, “I’ve got to take a deep

I’ve got to get more focused. I’ve got to try harder. I’ve got to get more positive.” After 30 minutes of not finding his way, he glanced at the top of his map and discovered he was holding a map of Detroit – not Chicago. In his anxiety, he had rushed the clerk at the counter and the clerk grabbed the wrong map. No matter how positive, no matter how focused, noo matter how hard he tried, he’s not going to find his way with the wrong map. So trying harder may not be the right “map” to generate a strong finish in 2015. What if there’s a better way? Through skillful questions, you can discover greater clarity, a new perspective and prepare yourself for a big leap that sets you up to break through your glass ceiling, discover your zone of genius and stop the “old map” from running the show. Perhaps it’s time to hire a highly trained coach to help you make 2016 your best year ever.

Home for the Holidays TALKING TO AGING PARENTS ABOUT THE NEXT STEP BY GIG HARBOR HOME MANAGEMENT
This December, many adult children of aging parents will make the long distance trek back home for the holidays. As they plan for their reunion, they can’t help but wonder if this will be the turning point in their parents’ living arrangements for the new year. Here are some answers to common questions asked at this time of year of National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM). How do I approach this awkward topic with my elderly parents? If you are increasingly concerned that critical things are slipping at your parents’ home (the food is spoiling, or the unpaid bills are piling up), then it is important to bring up the issue with them. Use a light-hearted tone, show respect and most of all remember that most of us don’t feel our age – can you relate? Emphasize the goal of asking for extra help: less stress, fewer burdens and easier chores (point out they get to define the parameters to protect their privacy and dignity). Consider taking them out for dinner or for a walk so that you can have the conversation in neutral territory. Be patient - it often takes time to process.
GigHarborHomeManagement.com
How do I talk about my loved one’s loss of autonomy? Imagine being in their position: what are they feeling? Fear? Uncertainty? Loss? Understanding those emotions will better prepare you for the patience required. If their safety is at risk, you’ll have to take action to protect their well-being. But giving them power over even the smallest of decisions, and as many as possible, is important.

Consider hiring a professional Geriatric Care Manager to act as a neutral party in evaluating options and offering support. What can I do if my parents refuse to talk? While honoring their perspective, it is also helpful to share how you feel. “When I see you struggling to do your own laundry, it makes me feel sad that you are carrying this responsibility all on your own. I would really love to help so that you can have more time to relax and do the hobbies that you love.” Speak with empathy; emphasize the positive outcomes and practice active listening. If one parent is clearly playing a caregiving role, privately ask how well he or she is coping with that, as they are likely hiding their struggle. Geriatric Care Managers advise families when the next step isn’t clear. In-home caregivers assess and provide feedback. Referral agencies make recommendations for senior living communities. Senior move managers trained by NASMM provide organizational support and oversee a transition to a new home when the time comes. Remember you are not alone in wanting what is best for your parents. Ask lots of questions, evaluate options and ask for support. Take care of yourself, so that you’ll have the physical, mental and emotional energy to support them.

You may be quite willing to plan an investment strategy for your retirement years. After all, it can be enjoyable to think about traveling the world, pursuing your hobbies or participating in any of the activities you’ve associated with an active retirement. However, once you do retire, you’ll need to “shift gears” somewhat to focus on your legacy. Specifically, to protect your loved ones and ensure your intentions are clear and carried out, you’ll need to do some more planning – and you’ll need to share your thoughts with your family. Here are some moves to consider: • List your assets and debts. Your family needs to be aware of your assets and debts, so share this information with them while you are alive and well. • Create a durable power of attorney. Give a trusted friend or family member a durable power of attorney to pay bills and make financial choices on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Choose an executor. An executor is the person or entity you name in your will to carry out your wishes. An executor has a variety of responsibilities, so pick someone who is honest and capable of dealing with legal and financial matters. Talk with an attorney about how best to name your executor. • Update your will. You might have written a will many years ago, but, over time, many aspects of your life may have changed. Review your will with your attorney to ensure it reflects your current wishes. • Review benefits of a living trust. A simple will may not be enough to accommodate your estate-planning needs. You might want to consider establishing a living trust, which provides you with significant flexibility in distributing your assets and can help you avoid the time-consuming, expensive and public
process of probate. To create a trust or other estate-planning documents, you will need to work with a qualified legal professional. • Review your beneficiary designations. The beneficiary designations on your financial accounts (401(k), IRA, etc.) and your insurance policies can even supersede the directions on your will, so it’s essential that you update these designations to reflect events such as divorce and remarriage. And make sure your beneficiaries have the facts they need to claim their benefits. • Share location of your legal documents. Your loved ones should know where you keep documents such as your birth certificate, will and living trust. If you keep these items in a safe deposit box, tell your family where you keep the key. • Encourage two-way communication. It’s obviously necessary to communicate your final wishes to your family members – but listen to their wishes and concerns, too. For example, ask your children to agree on who gets those objects of special concern to them, such as furniture, mementos and heirlooms. As you can see, you’ll need to take several steps to fulfill your intentions – and the above list is certainly not exhaustive. So plan carefully, engage the appropriate team – financial advisor, attorney, tax professional – and put your plans in motion. By being proactive, you can greatly ease the burden on your loved ones in the future. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

From Doubting to Touting HEMP IS A GREAT SOURCE OF BUILDING MATERIAL BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS
(This is part two of two-part series) It is environmentally friendly, easy to use and long lasting. How does hemp become a real building material? In 1938, Popular Mechanics Magazine reported the following: “From the farmer’s point of view, hemp is an easy crop to grow and will yield from three to six tons per acre on any land that will grow corn, wheat, or oats. It can be grown in any state... It has a short growing season, so that it can be planted after other crops are in. The long roots penetrate and break the soil to leave it in perfect condition for next year’s crop. The dense shock of leaves, eight to twelve feet above the ground, chokes out weeds.” Let’s take a closer look at what was once available, what is available now and why it is preferred. Hemp becomes plastic. Really? It’s been said that Henry Ford was one of the first to use hemp plastics for one of his cars. Built in 1941, his hemp plastic car contained cellulose fibers derived from hemp, wheat straw and sisal. The final product was lighter than steel and could withstand ten times the impact without denting. Not only did he create a hemp-

based plastic, he also saw the potential of biomass fuels and operated a successful conversion plant which produced hemp fuel. Many years later, Werner Aisslinger designed and built his first hemp chair using similar automotive technology to Ford. Natural fiber molded furniture from hemp boasts the same strength as glass fiber. You can create organic shapes and colors that are highly stable with this ecological approach. Imagine a healthy home with hemp insulation behind your walls and floors to hemp walls and cabinets to hemp curtains and hemp furnishings! Hemp building products are available. According to the Hemp Industry Association, 500 million dollars of hemp products are imported into the United States of America every year. There are over 30 countries in the world that grow hemp. Hempcrete is the result of mixing hemp shiv or hurd together with a lime-based binder. The hemp + water + lime binder produces a material that may be cast into walls. Once the material cures, it becomes rigid and exhibits the following qualities: fire, water and insect resistant, vapor permeable, impermeable to liquid water, insulating and practically unbreakable. Since hempcrete currently needs to be

imported, this viable material may cost more than lesser quality building materials. Hemp insulation: also known as Hemp Fiber “Batt” Insulation, is a direct substitute for fiberglass and other typical insulation materials. Hemp insulation exhibits high is formed into sheets by bonding hemp fibers into semi-rigid batts and exhibits high R-Value.
Henry Ford It’s been said that Henry Ford was one of the first to use hemp plastics for one of his cars.
Hemp board: From pressed hemp seeds, one can process and produce hemp oil. Hemp oil is simple to use, healthy, beautiful and durable. According to the Hemp Industries Association, product test results prove that a hemp oil based deck stain will outperform its high-end commercial synthetic and petroleum based competitors in resistance to weathering and does not contain toxins that off gas. Hemps qualities are obvious….where there is hemp, there is hope. According to “Hemp Horizons,” a book on the comeback of the world’s most promising plant, “the lifting of hemp-growing restrictions would allow the marketplace to choose hemp over chemically sprayed cotton, and thus could bring about a great reduction in agricultural chemicals while keeping farmland in productive use.” Hemp is the next generation of furniture, plant-based plastics, mainstream fabrics and building materials; natural, breathable and chemical-free. When we employ technological advances with sustainable and renewable resources, our built environment will truly be comfortable, healthy and efficient. Where there is hemp, there is hope. Let’s buy hemp products and encourage our courageous local farmers to start growing industrial hemp!

Here Comes the Sun PENLIGHT AND THE HARBOR HISTORY MUSEUM MAKE HISTORY WITH GIG HARBOR’S FIRST SOLAR PROJECT
BY SARAH POLYAKOV
In 1839, Alexandre Becquerel made an observation that was to change the world. Becquerel observed what is termed the photovoltaic effect while placing an electrode in a solution and exposing it to light. About 50 years later, Melvin Severy and Harry Reagan received separate patents for the first solar cells. In the 1890s, solar energy was poised to be the infinitely renewable power source of the future. But soon solar energy was to be eclipsed by another natural resource: oil. In 1859 Edwin Drake drilled the first oil well in the U.S. The U.S. petroleum industry took off and grew throughout the 1800s, mostly due to the demand for fuel in kerosene and oil lamps. In the early 1900s, the future of petroleum as the most important energy source was sealed. But solar energy couldn’t be put on the back-

burner forever. In the 1950s, the U.S. had entered both a cold war and the space age. With the Cold War the U.S. needed to launch satellites into space. Nevertheless, this couldn’t be done with petroleum or with battery power. The answer was once again right above everyone’s heads: the sun. This inexhaustible energy source would power satellites and beyond. Bell Labs announced their invention of the first practical silicon solar cell on April 25 of 1954. A New Light Since then solar energy has been developed and improved. Countries like Germany have led the way for large-scale solar projects. Even though Germany’s climate is colder than ours, they have managed to power 50 percent of their country with solar during the

course of a decade. Since solar panels are not dependent on direct sunlight, they can produce energy under cloud cover and even from indoor lights. With the Columbia River dams maxed out, solar energy becomes not only relevant but also feasible. Now is the time for Washington State’s solar revolution. Gig Harbor will benefit from the firstever community solar project. Lead by Jim Bellamy and sponsored by Peninsula Light, it was determined that the Harbor History Museum will be the site of a community solar installation. Not only does the museum provide the perfect location for such a project, it also introduces solar power to our community in a cost-effective way. Bellamy notes, “While many people have a desire to employ solar energy, a large share of them cannot take advantage of the resource. Putting solar on your home requires home ownership, the right sunny location, a load-bearing roof, and a fairly large upfront investment….Community Solar brings together a group of participants to build one large solar array. With Community Solar, one can get the financial benefits and support solar in our community for a small investment.” Bellamy became interested in solar power as a young man. At the time, Washington State was planning on building several nuclear power plants. Bellamy could foresee the inherent, negative impacts of such a project. He adds, “For decades I have recognized the limitations
of so-called ‘conventional’ power sources. Before ‘climate change’ became a worldwide concern, it was evident that there were many reasons to reduce the use of fossil fuels, reduce the number of rivers that were dammed, and reduce the waste of energy we used to heat and light our homes and businesses. This amazing planet is our only home, and it is being ruined at an alarming pace. The unlimited and largely untapped resource the sun provides can go a long way to provide the necessary energy for a prosperous and productive world without the side effects that other forms of energy produce.” Bellamy stresses that while solar is a wonderful source of energy, there are other important efforts that contribute to overall energy efficiency. He notes, “While solar energy is becoming an affordable and beneficial energy source here in the Northwest, there is even more benefit to us by using energy efficiently. New technologies for heating our homes and heating our water are enabling us to be more comfortable at lower cost. By taking advantage of these opportunities, our energy footprint can be much smaller, thereby making renewable resources such as solar energy even more important in providing power for future generations.” Solar is an egalitarian energy source because it is unlimited and can be made available to all. More people than ever are interested. Bellamy concludes, “Our market research shows

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
OLD BECOMES NEW AGAIN Preserving memories is serious business By Sarah Polyakov Memories. We spend a lot of time trying to preserve them. But as technology evolves exponentially, it becomes more difficult. In the past there were many choices when it came to finding a service to transfer your films and videos to DVD, but many of those places have closed. Fortunately, Towey Productions, owned by Dan Towey, remains in business and can help you hold onto those precious memories. Serving Gig Harbor and the surrounding Seattle area, Dan’s background is in broadcasting and broadcast engineering. After deregulation in the broadcasting industry some 25 years ago, Dan began transferring photos, slides, videos, and old films onto DVD for families, making them easy to view. Dan also produces CD and DVD keepsake products with personalized text or even a photo on the disc. “I meet a lot of great people,” said Dan of his work both past and present. He was a communications major at Washington State University and went on to work at Channel 7 as the executive producer for Wayne Cody and Steve Rable. Dan also helped launch KZOK onto the air in Seattle where he performed demographic research. Before starting his own business, Dan worked for ten years with Seattle radio legend Pat O’Day, as a DJ and music director.

Admittedly, it can be a bit scary turning over your memories to someone. But Dan is not a large warehouse where the possibilities of loss or damage are great. He works with his customers one on one. Dan uses the most advanced technology to transfer your decades full of memories. He values the importance of family images, and he takes photo and slide restoration and digitization very seriously. When it comes to 35-millimeter slides, Dan uses a top-of-the-line Nikon scanner, a glass free product that provides distortion-free images. He uses a multi-step process to restore images. This results in the highest-grade image that includes color correction and is free of pixelation issues. For all still images, Dan scans his materials between two and six megabytes and this results in the highest quality image that is technologically possible. Dan can digitize and preserve all of your family photos, slides, videos, and even music of all formats. In addition to preserving memories of your past, Dan is also ready to videotape and produce a professionally finished film that documents those magical moments that occur once or twice in a lifetime. His video production services include weddings, receptions, special presentations, short commercials, graduations, celebrations of life, and so much more. Dan

can bring your still photos to life by creating a multi-media DVD product. After photos are scanned, an audio track containing voice and music can be added, and finally, Dan can visually pan or zoom over the images so that it comes to life. Dan takes customer service seriously and makes every effort to earn his client’s trust. Whenever he begins a project, he works in his studio, right across the desk from customers. At that point he gathers all of the details and provides examples of his prior work. Dan also prides himself on being able to get projects back to clients in a very short time. Many times he is able to turn around a project in only two to three days, or less depending on circumstance. There’s a Family in the Choir Peninsula High School fosters supportive atmosphere among fine arts By Kellie French
The ability to create a family atmosphere in a volunteer organization, workplace, school or class is nothing short of sheer brilliance. It takes leadership with a proactive response to recognize this and build morale in a group of people. High school is a period of time students especially need a positive environment and uplifting morale to build self-confidence. The high school years are formative and build a foundation for life. Allison Ellis, the choir director at Peninsula High School, has created such an environment. It is an environment of family. Ellis has been the choir director at Key Peninsula for two years. She has also worked at Kopachuck Middle School. Ellis bubbles over with energy as she describes her students and program. The choir at Peninsula High School is running a pilot program – a musical theater program – in collaboration with the band. Kara Beloate is the musical theater director on staff with the high school and Justin Hli is the band director. The pilot program has been running for two years, but this is the first year class collaboration has been involved. The pilot program with the live band and live

choir collaboration came about because the principal of Key Peninsula wanted to develop and expand the fine arts program. This also included a way for students to receive academic credit. He enlisted Ellis to help get it going. This year the result of this program and class collaboration will come in the form of the high school’s concert choir on Thursday, December 10 at 7 pm. Currently the concert choir has 120 students and the musical theater has 72 students. One awesome highlight of the musical theater program is that they won “Best Choreography in the Fine Arts Program” for high schools last year. They had a display in the lobby with the students posing as live exhibits. It’s like ending with a huge exclamation point. The family atmosphere is essential to the choir and fine arts program. Ellis feels that how the arts touch lives affects the way music impacts the students and, in turn, the community. She has seen students with low grades and low selfconfidence improve drastically through the support and comfort of music. Ellis shared that the results she sees from

the impact of the program makes her job completely worthwhile. In her choir group, many there is a diversity of students, and they all grow close. Everyone talks and collaborates; there is little to no exclusion or cliques. It’s is a safe place for the students to build confidence, and it impacts the students’ overall success. For example, some of the kids in the choir class have formed a tutoring club where they use their diverse talents and keep each other accountable not only musically, but also academically. An important element that went into creating a family atmosphere within the choir program is the desire to help bolster self-confidence. Ellis promised to never put the students in a situation to perform where they felt they were not quite ready. She always tells them that kindness matters. All the time. Every time. No exceptions. Sometimes the activities are not just about the music. To build strong bonds there are mini-retreats where the students will just play board games and eat pizza. Leadership training is a strong component and requirement of the choir members. Every child in some

capacity works as a leadership trainer. Ellis says the training and feedback is personalized toward individual students. There are formal officer meetings, which require structure and protocol in class. However, giving ideas and feedback to students and then asking them for his or her input goes a long way in developing leadership skills. The students respond to the feedback and the inclusion they are given in the process. Ellis proudly comments that the students take pride in leadership activities and could run the class if she was absent due to illness. Each year several students participate in the State of Washington choir contest. Among the thousands of submissions, 20 students were selected from Key Peninsula High School. This is quite an honor and achievement. The environment in the choir group is one that is built upon acceptance no matter what. Students can be themselves. Senior Riley Egge shared that the atmosphere trickles down from the leadership. Students step in to help each other in their areas of strength. For example, if a student is strong in music theory, they can help another who may be struggling. Everyone looks out for each other like that. Ciela Ashworth, another senior choir member, moved here from North Dakota. The school

It was not sports centered as high schools in the Pacific Northwest tend to be. Ciela mentions that when there is conflict as a group they identify the core issue and work it from there. Such is the life of a family. Tight-knight relationships. Everyone has your back. The right kind of leadership in a family is one that builds trust. Families work together through problems and conflict. It’s exciting and messy all at the same time. Congratulations to Ellis and the choir at Peninsula High School!

IN FOCUS SPARE CHANGE
Helping in the most remarkable ways By Kellie French. Red Kettle photos courtesy of The Salvation Army. Photos of Tom and Paula Carlson courtesy of Keith D. Boe. for Living Local Magazine The Salvation Army’s long-standing tradition of ringing bells for the smallest of donations is not only their biggest fundraiser of the year, funding many of their programs, it is also a way for some bell ringers to earn that little extra they need to carry them over through the season. Just how did this tradition come about? The tradition, now called the Red Kettle Campaign, actually started with a black kettle and one man’s desire to feed his neighbors more than 100 years ago. In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was upset that people in the local area were doing without the necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. During the holiday season, he decided to give a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome – funding the project. He had to be creative and inventive and needed to solicit the help of others. McFee spent many hours worrying, planning and praying about a way to fund feeding the poorest people in the community. He remembered his days when he was a sailor and a large iron kettle called a Simpson’s pot was set out so that people passing by could put a coin in to help feed the poor. In Oakland, Captain McFee placed a similar kettle out and said to “Keep the Pot Boiling.” Six years later, the kettle idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area. That year, the combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the first mammoth sit down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods. In Pierce County the Kettle Program is one of the most successful programs. According to Major Donald Shepherd of the Pierce County office, several programs in Gig Harbor and Pierce County directly benefit from the Red Kettle Spare Change Program. The proceeds from Gig Harbor not only benefit activities in Gig Harbor, but all of Pierce County. The closest office in Gig Harbor is Federal Way, which is directed by Major Donald Shepherd. Pastor Bill Reed and Chapel Hill Church do the volunteer and coordination efforts of local kettle bell ringers. Kettle bell ringers show a tremendous commitment for the cause. Ringing a bell for several hours takes a certain type of dedication and sometimes the weather does not always cooperate. There may be rain or snow, and the occasional not so friendly greeting back from the passers – they may be in a grumpy mood! Most of the bell ringers are met with smiles, even if those passing by cannot afford to drop some spare change.
ABOVE Tom and Paula Carlson say they are touched by the generosity they see as Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign bell ringers. TOP RIGHT Many people come together to help the many Coeur d’Alene residents in need.

Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers in Pierce County. Programs have provided spiritual, social and emotional assistance for men and women who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. The centers offer residential housing, work, and group and individual therapy, all in a clean, wholesome environment. The physical and spiritual care that program participants receive prepares them to re-enter society and return to gainful employment. Many of those who have been rehabilitated are reunited with their families and resume a normal life. What a huge difference spare change makes in the lives of these people! Government spending is not solicited for this program, so the spare change from the Kettle Program is especially helpful. According to Feeding America, more than 48.8 million people face the threat of hunger daily in the United States. To help relieve the situation, The Salvation Army serves 60 million meals to anyone in need through its many soup kitchens, sit-down meal programs, food pantries, mobile meals and community garden. According to Major Donald Shepherd, this is one of the major programs in Pierce County that the Red Kettle Change Program goes for. Group homes, emergency shelters and transitional living centers provide housing, food and overnight lodging for varying amounts of time to those in need. In addition, they provide educational, counseling and
vocational services to homeless, destitute individuals and families, and youth where family care is undesirable or unavailable. For those families with temporal needs, programs help families and needy individuals with emergency food, housing and utility assistance. This can help families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County make it through a temporary rough or transitional time. Providing the basic needs and necessities for a short time can help alleviate major disruption in children’s lives. The “miracle of Christmas is repeated over and over again through the joy of caring and sharing. The traditional red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors and the homeless. Donations and financial assistance provide Christmas dinners, clothing and toys for families in need, including families of prisoners. The Kettle Change program is familiar to many people. It happens every year in the winter. Even those who do not celebrate the Christmas holiday for religious reasons will throw in loose change, knowing it goes to help those who are in need. Hundreds of children in Pierce County from low-income families enjoy fresh air, exercise and new friendships at annual summer camp programs. The camping experience is more than just a pleasant vacation. Children learn new skills and self-reliance; trained counselors who understand their emotional needs and
problems help them to mature. Camp activities include learning to swim, adventure and scouting, arts and crafts, music development and sports. Many of these children would not have had the opportunity except from the generosity of those who dropped spare change in the kettle on their way into the grocery store. In San Diego, Joan Kroc started and funded a program in that would turn into a domino effect across Salvation Army Centers. Kroc Centers provide facilities, programs, and services that encourage positive living, offer life-changing experiences for children and adults, strengthen families and enrich the lives of seniors, with the goal of uplifting individuals and benefiting communities in need. They serve hundreds of thousands of individuals each year, including members, visitors, employees and volunteers. The centers contribute open space, recreation and needed services to the community, including fitness and wellness activities, social services, aquatics, childcare and other programs; and participants benefit from robust social networks. These centers contribute two main strands of financial benefits to the community: a one-time financial benefit catalyzed by their construction and an annual economic benefit resulting from ongoing programming and services. So just remember it may be just a few pennies, nickels or dimes, but it adds up, going a long way to impact the lives of others in a positive way.

GIG HARBOR’S WINTER WONDERLAND Bringing the best of the season to the Harbor By Rebecca Reece. Photos by R. Reece/SynRRg Creative Since October of 2010, The Garden Room, located in Uptown Gig harbor Shopping Center, has been delighting the close-knit community of Gig Harbor with seasonal décor from all over the world, as well as providing products crafted by talented, local artisans. Owner Christine Wickstrom uses her innate intuition and eye as a designer to travel the world and bring back the most beautiful, unique and sought-after décor year-round. Wickstrom grew up nearby in University Place and has been a part of the Gig Harbor community for over 28 years. She is proud to be able to use the success of The Garden Room to stay regularly involved in fundraisers for FISH Food Bank, the Harbor History Museum and other organizations, as well as donating to local school fundraisers. Each of the four seasons in The Garden Room offers beautiful and functional décor and accessories for the home and garden; however, this time of year is what the community calls “magic” inside the walls of this shop! The winter holiday season is kicked off every year with the annual Holiday Open House (they just celebrated their sixth annual open house this November!) When you walk into The Garden Room, you’re transported into a winter wonderland of the color and scents of
the season. When you walk in the front door, the robust aromas of frasier fir, cinnamon, spice, and other familiar holiday scents wrap warmly around you like a shawl that’s been hanging in grandmother’s kitchen! Customers look forward to the main theme of every year – this year’s theme of European Winter Wonderland is evident through thousands of shimmering one-of-a-kind icicles and ornaments that generously cover limbs of high quality pre-lit trees. Several themes can be perused during the season as you make your way through the store; rustic woodland winter, snowmen, soft sage, ice blue, and gold elegance, just to name a few. You’ll see everlasting floral and greenery wreaths arranged by the talented designers who are always ready to help you put together the just-right wreath, arrangement or centerpiece for your front door, mantle or holiday table. Rich, colorful linens, candles of all kind – scented, non-scented or flameless and remote control candles – unique serving and wine accessories, and anything else you need to be ready for your holiday dinner guests is beautifully displayed throughout the store.
Harbor or nearby, and that is in part what Wickstrom attributes to the success of The Garden Room over the past years. She believes the key to continued success, however, is this – “Our customers are the most loyal and wonderful people around; every time a season changes in The Garden Room, it’s like a reunion as long-time customers arrive with stories and updates about their children and grandchildren. This community isn’t just made up of people, it’s family. We’re family and that’s my favorite thing about what I do,” she said. Stop by and see what makes The Garden Room in Uptown Gig Harbor one of the Harbor’s greatest treasures!

“If you really truly want something in life, you need to work for it and drive your way there,” said senior Jordan Bertram. “I would not be a college-bound athlete if I didn’t live by this idea.” A goalkeeper for the Gig Harbor High School’s soccer team and her club team, Jordan has been instrumental in the success of both squads. And she doesn’t plan to quit anytime soon. Jordan has received a soccer scholarship to play for California State University, Bakersfield, a division 1 school, beginning next fall. “I hopefully will get into a graduate degree program somewhere in California to further my career plan,” said Jordan of her plan to study sports medicine and pursue a degree in kinesiology with a minor in human biological studies.”

Surprisingly, the aspect of soccer that Jordan enjoys most is the pressure. “As the keeper, the game is ultimately riding on you. You are the last line of defense, and yes, it had to go through 10 other players before it got to you, but you are still expected to shine and make the big save,” said Jordan. And what is that one life lesson that sports has taught her? “It is all about what you are willing to give up in order to reach your dreams,” said Jordan. “You have to be willing to give that up and step out of your comfort zone to get there if it is something you truly want.”

A three-sport athlete, Robert Wallwork is a dedicated young man. A senior at Peninsula High School, Robert participates in football, basketball and track.
But like any success story, it didn’t always come easy. “Probably one of the biggest problems I had was self-doubt. It was something I had for a long time because I always felt that I wasn’t going to make it,” shared Robert. “How I overcame it was something my basketball coach told me. He told how he got better at the game and told me that ‘I worked too hard to get to where I am.’ Which pushed him and when I heard it, it also pushed me as well.”

Robert’s future plans include attending Central Washington University to become a pilot, but he is also looking at other schools as well. Robert said he has learned a lot from sports, but above all it is the lesson of perseverance. “You have to push through giving everything you got each and every day no matter what.”
Robert has been at Peninsula High School for two years, having previously attended Lincoln High School. The accolades he received at Lincoln High School have continued to be awarded to him at PHS. He has received several scholar athletic awards and was the company commander for this JROTC program at Lincoln. “I have an award from the American Legion which they gave me for scholastic excellence,” said Robert.

THE GREATEST GIFT After surviving a rare form of childhood cancer, Violet Spataro is giving back to young cancer patients By Sarah Polyakov
Violet Spataro wins the hearts of everyone she meets and it’s easy to see why. A beautiful and vivacious child with blue eyes and porcelain skin, Violet shares her enthusiasm for life as well as her loving spirit with everyone she meets. At 4 years old, she has wooed people like Ellen DeGeneres, Brandon Heath and Ben Savage with her outgoing and fun personality. Indeed, Violet is no shrinking violet, and she embraces life with all of the enthusiasm a child can muster. Still, one would never guess that Violet’s vibrant blue eyes hold a profound story that makes most stand in awe of her courage and her innocent, open heart. You see, rarely are most children battling an illness that is life-threatening. But Violet is the unfortunate exception and has been battling Retinoblastoma, which is pediatric eye cancer, since she was only 6 months old. Even though this alone is a parent’s worst nightmare, tests were done and the outcome in those tests culminated in a worrisome prognosis: Violet’s body lacks a tumor-suppressing protein that most take for granted.
Violet’s mom, Shenay Spataro notes, “After genetic testing, it was found that Violet has the RB1 gene mutation and a chromosome 13 deletion. This means that not only is she susceptible to cancerous tumors occurring in her eyes until age 6, but she also has a higher probability of cancer occurring in other parts of the body throughout her life. Violet’s body does not produce the tumor suppressing protein that everyone else’s does. The loss of this protein allows cells to grow and divide without control or order, leading to the development of cancerous tumors.” Violet’s battle with Retinoblastoma began when she was an infant; she began receiving

chemotherapy when she was 7 months old. Doctors had considered removing one of Violet’s eyes, but after Shenay asked one of the doctor’s a poignant question about what he would do in the same situation, chemotherapy became the method of choice. Violet has withstood many difficult procedures and Shenay noted that, “Violet has endured CT scans, MRIs, surgeries, having a port-a-cath, countless blood draws, neulasta injections, 12 rounds of chemotherapy (consisting of 3 chemo meds: vincristine, carboplatin and etoposide), 20 exams under anesthesia (EUAs), hospital stays for systemic infections and more.”
exams are also a part of her yearly monitoring plan.” Throughout hardship and travail, one of the most miraculous parts of Violet’s story involves her passion for serving others. Violet and her mother have founded Violet Brielle Live Love Foundation. Together Violet and her mother
true. In October she warmed hearts in a dream guest spot on The Ellen Degeneres Show where she shared how she gives Blessing Bundles to other children battling cancer. And in November, Violet co-hosted MakeA-Wish America’s 35th Anniversary event in Disneyland alongside actor and director Ben Savage. It was at this event with attendees from Make-A-Wish chapters all over the country where Violet was told how she has inspired giving and volunteers in mass amounts through her precocious spirit, loving heart and wish video that went viral.
Each day we have the internal struggle to keep our faith stronger than our fears. Knowing it only takes one cell to begin a downward spiral in Violet’s health, we have to remember to give our worries to God.
For now, the exhaustive list of treatments that Violet has undergone has put the cancer in remission. But the remnants of the disease remain. She is blind in one eye, with only peripheral vision remaining. As a result, Violet wears an eye patch for two hours each day. Still, no one in her family is able to breathe a sign of relief just yet. “An inactive tumor still remains on the optic nerve in Violet’s left eye. She continues to be closely monitored with Exams Under Anesthesia (EUA) where scans are done of her eyes; labs and Oncology followups every few weeks at Seattle Children’s Hospital. These EUAs and labs are to make sure there is no recurrence of cancer and her follow up appointments check on her physical well being in relation to the risks associated with her full diagnosis. put together “Blessing Bundles” for other children suffering from cancer. These bundles include age-appropriate toys, coloring books, stuffed animals and other miscellaneous items meant to bring cheer to another child’s life. Violet’s story has slowly gotten out, and she has been a special guest at several functions. Shenay reports, “2015 has been an incredible year for little Violet.” In March, she stole the show at the Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington Gala when she sang “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” for the attendees, and her art piece was auctioned off for an amazing $15,000 to help make wishes come

But Violet hasn’t only caught the eye of Ellen DeGeneres and Ben Savage. Violet has also caught the eye of her favorite Christian singer, Brandon Heath. Violet first discovered Heath through listening to his song “The Light In Me” on repeat while she was undergoing chemotherapy. She fell in love with Heath’s music and wanted nothing more than to see him in concert. In a twist of fate, some family friends paid for Violet and her family to see one of his concerts in the area. Violet was able to meet him and they have since become friends. When asked about Heath, Violet said, “I love Brandon. He is my favorite singer since I was a baby and he is my friend. I love all of his songs and his music makes me happy.” Even though Violet is partially out of the woods for now, the experience has been frightening for her family. Shenay notes that it was and

is God who continues to get them through it. Shenay recounts, “We prayed on our hands and knees for Violet’s healing. We still do. Each day we have the internal struggle to keep our faith stronger than our fears. Knowing it only takes one cell to begin a downward spiral in Violet’s health, we have to remember to give our worries to God. We lean heavily on our faith in Him for peace and hope. We are so grateful for His unfailing love and grace. He has greatly blessed us with Violet. She is our treasure and we cherish each and every moment.” Shenay also gives some words of wisdom to other families who are struggling with difficulties in their lives. She says, “Believe in miracles and do not lose hope. God is faithful and He loves you so much. There is nothing that can separate you from His love.” Unfortunately, medical bills linger for even those who have the best of insurance. This experience has been a hardship for the Spataro family both emotionally and financially. An online fundraiser (started by Shenay’s mom) is where donations can be made to assist with Violet’s ongoing medical expenses. Please visit: www.youcaring.com/wesupportviolet. How many opportunities will you get in a lifetime to be accepted into culture that’s not your own? Yes, almost all of us have the opportunity to travel, see new places, and meet friends from all over the world, but unless you’re planning on learning a new language and becoming an ex-pat, the chances to truly get to know a community are few and far. US-El Salvador Sister Cities (USESSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides volunteers just this opportunity. Around for almost 30 years, USESSC formed during the Salvadoran Civil War as an organization to promote solidarity between the U.S. and El Salvador. They partner U.S. cities with their own “sister” Salvadoran communities. Tthere are currently 17 pairs of communities. Opportunities through USESSC include: • Internships in El Salvador for a minimum of three months. If you’re proficient in Spanish and interested in writing, blogging, history, human rights or digital media, you might be the perfect fit.
“I
can’t think of any other way to describe how I feel interacting with others through community service besides with these four words: I absolutely love it. I’m you’re notso-average high school girl, because my inspiration comes from giving back to the world around me.” —Katie Chambers, embarrassing scholarship essay 2011 I found this quote from my 18-year-old self the other day while writing on my computer, watching the torrents of rain outside the small patio, making it more impossible to leave the house with each passing minute. I had just recovered from my first brush with dengue fever in El Salvador, and found myself very inspired to write and reflect on what had brought me here in the first place. That meant perusing further and further back through my words until before I knew it, I re-met this high school girl.
I reveled in the label of “humanitarian.” Little did I know back then how broad and controversial this term actually is, nor how many layers it is made of. As I felt more than watched the rain pour down outside, I was hit with how much I had learned and transformed in just four short years. How did I get from dishing out tomato-basil bisque at a Sandpoint, Idaho soup kitchen to speaking a foreign language in the jungle of a rural country? Humanitarianism comes with responsibility. This is the greatest lesson I’ve pulled from my college education and travels − you’re not automatically put on the nice list for labeling yourself a volunteer. If you’re not mindful of your service to the communities around you, you can actually do more harm as a humanitarian than good. Whether you have ideas to get involved on a local level, volunteer abroad, or even start a nonprofit, here are the top three pieces of advice that have helped me graduate from
• Employment as a USESSC coordinator. USESSC is searching for an individual fluent in Spanish with experience in nonprofit work who has lived in a Latin American country. • Join a delegation to visit El Salvador yourself and learn about current issues. my soup kitchen days to actually contributing to positive change in my surroundings: Think from the Inside Out Sometimes the answers we have aren’t the answers that are needed. I learned this lesson after driving three hours away from the towering mountains of Bozeman, Montana and into the rolling sea of Northern Cheyenne grasslands. We had left behind the grocery stores, gas stations, and almost all other signs of economic activity. As we drove farther into the reservation, the only other outsiders we saw were the truck drivers passing through on their way to bigger cities and a paycheck. My research partner and I finally arrived at Little Big Horn College to meet with our mentor, Meredith. We had come to pick his brain and tribal wisdom for a class that collaborated with the Northern Cheyenne community on beneficial research topics. What work could we do for him that would actually be helpful to his community? “You know, I’d really like some information on the Echinacea plant,” he answered. I watched all of the ideas I had come prepared with fly out the college cafeteria door. Echinacea? I thought. What about some lesson plans for the elementary school? Some local business ideas? Anything more tangible than information on a plant.
Where I wanted to shoot for bigger and more dynamic ideas for the reservation, Meredith was realistically thinking one step at a time while taking into consideration Northern Cheyenne values of life. Having rented out a plot of land abundant in native plants, Meredith hoped to teach the youth on the reservation how to identify these plants and remind them of their ancestral uses. Although it hadn’t been my first choice, I spent the rest of the semester preparing a report for Meredith comparing traditional uses of Echinacea to Western use. Our findings were surprisingly, well, cool: we found science to better verify Northern Cheyenne uses of the plant. Meredith was able to use our findings to work into his educational program on his land. For the big picture innovators out there like me, I’m telling you now to slow down. Before acting on ideas that you think are the right ones, put yourself in the shoes of those who will be directly affected by your service. Consider that the values you hold important may not be the same values as those you are working with. Get to know your community inside and out, and by listening instead of leading. Begin to look through their eyes while working instead of your own. Watch out for Paternalism Already forgot this high school vocabulary word?
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM DECEMBER 2015
Paternalism can be defined as: “Those in authority restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to them in the subordinates’ supposed best interest.” In other words, it’s the thought that you are qualified to solve the problems of others, even more so than the others themselves. Paternalism often arises when working with vulnerable populations, such as children or impoverished communities. I’ve spent the last three months working with a nonprofit in El Salvador (see side bar for more information), but I witnessed paternalism before coming to the Central American country. At a dinner party this summer, I all of a sudden found myself the center of

attention as one by one, people stopped their side conversations to listen as I explained what kind of projects I would be working on in the Salvadoran community. “Wow. That is so great you will be down there helping to show people how to do things they wouldn’t know how to do themselves.” It was passed off as a harmless comment, meant as a compliment to me as the other party-goers nodded and muttered in agreement. However, it was all I could do to keep my jaw from dropping. It was a very similar response to many I had experienced in my pre-departure conversations with friends and family. I realized how superior my society felt toward Latin America (half of them out there still think I’m in Ecuador- it’s all the same, right?). Did I snap back with an opinion? Lecture

on my true intentions and philosophies? Get up and leave the dinner table? No. I gave a small smile and shut up. Paternalism is a trait you have to personally decide you want to eradicate. Trust me − there are many confident individuals out there who don’t see the problem with believing they can best solve the world’s issues. Watch out for this feeling of seemingly harmless superiority that exists within all of us − there is no better or worse population out there than another. Lower yourself down from this pedestal (down 18-year-old humanitarians! Down!), get comfortable questioning your motives, and

like they’ve scraped their knee pretty well. Here are two possible scenarios: You give the person a fully stocked first aid kit. You teach them how to use each piece of it, show them how to mend their wound, then continue on your way. You help the person to clean their wound. You listen to them as they explained what happened and sit with them until they feel okay to get up. During your conversation, you discover how much you have in common (you both like beer) and decide to head off in the same direction (to a brewery). Although both scenarios are helpful to the fallen person, the first embodies more the idea of charity. When you practice charity, you give with the purpose of aid, such as donating money to an organization and moving on. The second scenario embodies more the idea of solidarity: the unity of individuals as they support each other in a common cause. This is my job in El Salvador, to practice solidarity (unlike my example, this sadly does not entail drinking any beer). I am an on-site representative of my organization. My sole role is to be present in a rural community and accompany Salvadoran locals. Yes, I help out wherever and whenever I can with various projects, but the most important work I do is simply being here. Let me give you a heavy example. The other day I sat beneath the shade of a grand canopy tree overlooking the rapidly-
54
flowing Sumpul River. It would’ve been the perfect picnic spot had it not been for what lay beneath the earth. “Everybody stop. We’ve hit a shoe.” Shovels froze in mid-air as everyone looked in the direction of the archaeologist. The playful mood of mindless digging had changed in an instant. I could actually feel the heaviness of the air resting its weight on my shoulders as my compañeros’ eyes darted into the hole they had created. We were only an hour into the exhumation process, an hour into a moment anticipated by four years of bureaucratic preparation. All of the required officials were there: the human rights lawyer looking on, the archaeologist leading the dig, and the handful of police resting conspicuously away from the group under the shade of a tree. There was a journalist, a photographer, and the widowed owner of the land. The rest of us acted as manual labor and moral support for the brothers of the two bodies that had waited patiently to be discovered for 33 years. This dig is only one of hundreds that are currently being conducted throughout the country. As citizen after citizen disappeared during the Salvadoran Civil War of the 80s, families were left without any closure that their loved ones had actually perished at the hands of the military government. The lengthy process of uncovering graves in search of these friends and family is still being carried out today.
I had helped a bit in the kitchen to prepare breakfast and lunch for the workers and policemen, but really spent most of the day watching in fascination as tons of dirt were lifted off of two skeletons, one shovel-full at a time. I passed out coffee. I talked with the men while they rested. Solidarity is about being. Being there when someone needs you, and being a presence in our global world. It’s that moment when you pull back from the head of the group to walk in step with your companions. Sometimes, we don’t always know what’s best. Sometimes, listening is better than leading. And sometimes, not acting can be more beneficial than acting. You can’t simply call yourself a humanitarian in a high school essay, although it might be a good start. Humanitarianism is mindfulness, and it’s this mindfulness that above all creates change in our environments. Use this manual as a set of guidelines for awareness of your thoughts and your actions. But above all, remember the responsibility we accept by being “do-gooders.” It’s the responsibility to be your own self-critic and monitor, which can be the key to whether any good is actually being done at all. Even a teenager with the soup spoon can do that.
As for me, I hadn’t picked up a shovel all day.

Tradition Echoes Through the Harbor HARK THE HARBOR RETURNS! BY MADDIE RUSSO Come one, come all, and join the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance as they put on the 7th Annual Hark the Harbor! Enjoy a night of caroling and impromptu dancing with hundreds of your fellow community members. The event will take place on December 13 at Skansie Park with music and fun beginning at 5:30pm. The Argosy Cruise Ship will be pulling in around 6:20pm with the Olympia Youth Choir spreading Christmas cheer through the state-of-the-art speaker system. The Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship festival is a holiday celebration that has been a Pacific Northwest tradition since 1949. Every year the ship sails to over 45 different waterfront communities of the Puget Sound, including Gig Harbor. On shore, thousands of people will gather around bonfires, waiting for the ship to pull up and hear the sounds of the choir as they carol to them.
56
“This event was started to highlight the arrival of the Argosy Christmas Ship, but has become an important part of our small town. Old fashioned Christmas on the downtown waterfront. Where else does the community go to sing Christmas Carols?” asked Mary DesMarais, the executive director of the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance. “Each year we have more and more people join us to celebrate the season through song, led by the very talented Sharon Stearnes.” Sharon was the organist for the Seattle Mariners from 1985 to 1990 and currently plays the organ at the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church.
Families and participants are welcomed to take photos in front of the lit city Christmas tree in Skansie Park while anticipating the arrival of the ship. If you’re in need of a beverage to help stay warm, Java & Clay right across the street will be open and serving hot chocolate and coffee for purchase. This is a family-fun event that you won’t want to miss! Join the tradition and spread the holiday spirit. There may even be an appearance from Santa Claus, bearing candy canes, to meet and greet all of the kids.
Community caroling will start at 5:45pm. Participants will gather under the Skansie Brothers Park Pavilion where there will be lit candles and song books to guide them through the songs. The singing will be done while standing – and dancing is highly encouraged.

DID YOU KNOW? For the last 76 years, Wilson has been the exclusive producer of NFL footballs. The company produces approximately 4,000 per day. Since the modern NFL draft began, there has only been one year when a quarterback has not been selected during the first two rounds. 1939 was the year the NFL first began to broadcast its games on television. The viewing audience for that first game was a mere 500 people. CBS paid $4.65 million in 1962 for the first exclusive rights to broadcast NFL games. (Compare that to Fox’s current deal which pays a reported $1.15 billion per year for its NFC package). But that deal with CBS didn’t cover the NFL championship, which NBC acquired for just under $1 million or about one-fourth the cost of what it’ll take to buy a 30-second ad at Super Bowl 50. The oldest inductee to the NFL Hall of Fame was Ed Sabol who was 94 at the time. The youngest is Gale Sayers who was 34 at the time he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. A record number of penalties were called in the first three weeks of this year’s NFL season in comparison to any other season during the same time period.

I
n honor of reaching the midpoint of the 2015-16 NFL season, it’s time that we take a look back on the first half. We know the Pacific Northwest is predominantly part of Seahawks nation, but what about those whose hearts belong elsewhere? I’ll check in on all 32 teams and give them an old-fashioned letter grade for their respective first-half performances. For ease of reading, I’ve listed all teams in alphabetical order. With plenty to go over, let’s not waste any time and get right into it! Arizona Cardinals (NFC West): A QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald continue to evade the traps of Father Time as they are both enjoying career years. Through week nine, Palmer sits fifth in the league in passing yards (2,386) and second in touchdowns (20). Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has eclipsed 706 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. The tough road still lies ahead as they have contests with Green Bay and Cincinnati to go along with two games against Seattle. Atlanta Falcons (NFC South): B RB Devonta Freeman has exploded onto the scene since Tevin Coleman went down in week two. All Freeman has done since then is rush for 721 yards and nine touchdowns. Despite Freeman’s production, the Falcons have dropped 3 of their last 4 games due to inconsistent play out of QB Matt Ryan. WR Julio Jones leads the league in receiving yards (1,029) and receptions (80). The Falcons are
LIVINGLOCAL
currently the last ones in for the playoffs. With two games remaining against the resurgent Panthers, they will have to fight hard to stay in that position. Baltimore Ravens (AFC North): CIt’s hard to be a Ravens fan right now. Each of their six losses has been by one possession. WR Steve Smith Sr. was enjoying a career year until he went down with a seasonending injury. QB Joe Flacco has basically been a wash throwing 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. RB Justin Forsett has been valuable in that he hasn’t turned the ball over yet. The biggest problem with the Ravens is their secondary. Too many big plays and blown assignments each week have contributed to the six losses. With Cincinnati yet to lose a game, the playoff picture looks bleak. Buffalo Bills (AFC East): C Head Coach Rex Ryan was supposed to be the Savior in Buffalo. Instead, he has basically made a team that makes you say “they’re OK I guess.” The Bills aren’t horrible anywhere, but they aren’t necessarily great either. QB Tyrod Taylor has shown glimpses of greatness. Mainly known for his legs, he has developed as a pocket passer. LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams have been respectable in the backfield. Ryan will need to see his defense actually execute the schemes he has set forth if they want to see the playoffs. Carolina Panthers (NFC South): A Like the Bills, the Panthers aren’t necessarily
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM DECEMBER 2015
great at any one thing. The difference lies in how well they play as a unit. Despite ranking 27th in the league for passing offense, the Panthers have got it done on the ground. QB Cam Newton has rarely been under pressure all season, affording him and RB Jonathan Stewart the opportunity for space. A soft remaining schedule gives the Panthers a good chance to continue this success. Chicago Bears (NFC North): CAlways under heavy scrutiny, QB Jay Cutler has actually fared well in 2015, throwing for 1,787 yards, 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. The struggles stem mainly from RB Matt Forte and WR Alshon Jeffery battling injuries, along with a defense that is giving up 27.6 points per game. Despite this, the Bears have managed to go 3-2 in the last 5 games. Are they trending upward? With Green Bay and Minnesota currently holding playoff spots above them, the Bears will be hard-pressed to garner their own spot by season’s end. Cincinnati Bengals (AFC North): A The Bengals have done so well that many have brought QB Andy Dalton into the conversation of MVP. There aren’t many holes for this team as they are well balanced on both offense and defense. This has helped them to four wins by at least 10 points. Remaining unbeaten may prove difficult as they still have games against Denver and Arizona. However, with the rest of the division being mediocre, the AFC North seems to be theirs to lose.
Cleveland Browns (AFC North): D Cleveland’s only two wins came against hapless Tennessee and Baltimore. Somebody had to win in those games, and Cleveland just happened to be that team. Other than this, there haven’t been many bright spots for the city of Cleveland. Head Coach Mike Pettine can’t make up his mind at quarterback. The defense has already given up 3,614 total yards (30th in NFL). Cleveland looks poised to be picking in the top 10 of the 2016 NFL draft. So I guess that’s one good thing, right? Dallas Cowboys (NFC East): D+ QB Tony Romo and WR Dez Bryant both went down early and missed significant time. Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel have been underwhelming in place of Romo. Add in no clear producer at the premium positions of running back and wide receiver, and their record comes as no surprise. The good news for the Cowboys is the mediocrity that is the NFC East. Bryant is already back and Romo may return week 11, setting them up for a run. Denver Broncos (AFC West): AThe Broncos are where they are primarily because of a formidable defense. Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips has them in the top five of nearly every category. With QB Peyton Manning on the downward trend and a boring offense in general, the Broncos will look to this defense to carry them into the playoffs.
LIVINGLOCAL
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM DECEMBER 2015
Detroit Lions (NFC North): F No surprise here. The Lions have struggled everywhere. QB Matthew Stafford has thrown 11 interceptions; the defense has given up 245 points and 3,086 yards. WR Calvin Johnson has been held in check all season (659 yards and only three touchdowns). The offense has only collected 557 yards on the ground. It looks like the Lions may be getting that first overall pick in next year’s draft. Green Bay Packers (NFC North): B+ After starting the season 6-0, the Packers have lost their last two, albeit to Denver and Carolina. After losing WR Jordy Nelson for the year, the Packers are 26th in the league for passing yards per game (225.3). This could
Despite ranking 27th in the league for passing offense, the Panthers have got it done on the ground. QB Cam Newton has rarely been under pressure all season, affording him and RB Jonathan Stewart the opportunity for space.
65
be due to the Packers not throwing the ball enough each game (26th in passing attempts). With RB Eddie Lacy struggling as of late, the Packers need Rodgers to throw the ball more to avoid a collapse. Houston Texans (AFC South): CThe Texans have three things going for them: WR DeAndre Hopkins, DE JJ Watt, and playing in the AFC South. The Texans offense is basically “throw the ball to DeAndre on every play,” who is second in the league in targets. Watt is having a better season statistically through his first eight games this year than his first eight in 2014-15. With the AFC South being so awful, the Texans still technically have a chance. Indianapolis Colts (AFC South): C Hard to believe a first place team gets a C, but that’s how bad the AFC South is this year. QB Andrew Luck has simply not been good. He has thrown 12 interceptions and fumbled three times (losing one). The defense continues to struggle. RB Frank Gore has been nearly nonexistent. Even with a losing record, the Colts may very well win the South this year. Jacksonville Jaguars (AFC South): D QB Blake Bortles is in the league’s top 10 for passing yards by virtue of his top two receivers, Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson. Despite what the record may say, the Jaguars have good young talent that will only get better, which is always something to be optimistic about.
66
Kansas City Chiefs (AFC West): C A five-game skid and losing starting RB Jamaal Charles has been the story of the 2015 season for KC. QB Alex Smith has done well at protecting the ball despite poor pass protection. The Chiefs still have a shot at the playoffs if the defense can tighten up their pass coverage as they have allowed 16 touchdowns through the air. Miami Dolphins (AFC East): D After spending a bunch of money on DE Ndamukong Suh and firing head coach Joe Philbin, the Dolphins are still suffering in the loss column. Only two of their games have been decided by one score, while the other six games have been either big wins or big losses. Consistency is something the Dolphins are still searching for. However, it may be too late in 2015.
controversy of “Deflategate.” After all the scrutiny, they seem to be seeking vengeance. They will be the Super Bowl favorites once again. New Orleans Saints (NFC South): CQB Drew Brees is still finding ways to be productive, including a seven-touchdown performance against the Giants. The defense continues to plague them week-by-week. They are dead last in the league in total defense, which has put too much pressure on the offense to score big points. Unless the defense turns it around, expect the Saints to remain at the bottom of their division.
Minnesota Vikings (NFC North): B+ Boy are the Vikings and their fans happy to have Adrian Petersen back after the 2014 controversy. He currently leads the league in rushing with 758 yards. The Vikings still have tough contests against Seattle, Atlanta, and Arizona.
New York Giants (NFC East): BQB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr. continue to be the focal point of the Giants. Manning boasts a healthy 3:1 touchdowninterception ratio while Beckham Jr. just continues to get open. The Achilles heel remains an awful pass defense. The Giants have given up 2,770 yards through the air, which is good enough for 32nd in the league. Until that is straightened out, the offense will continue to be pressured to put up around 30 points per game to win.
New England Patriots (AFC East): A+ The Patriots are the best team in the NFL for a multitude of reasons. Their offense looks very much like the 2007 team that went 16-0 in the regular season. The big reason they get the A+ grade is how they’ve handled the offseason
New York Jets (AFC East): C+ RB Chris Ivory has become a household name for the Jets, ranking in the top 10 in both rushing yards and touchdowns. After QB Geno Smith was injured in a preseason altercation, Ryan Fitzpatrick has done well. The defense

continues to keep the Jets close every game and will need the offense to be more consistent each week to have a chance at a wild card spot. Oakland Raiders (AFC West): BThe Raiders are finally trending in the right direction thanks to the rise of three guys on the offensive side of the ball: QB Derek Carr, WR Amari Cooper, and RB Latavius Murray. These three have helped the Oakland offense to be very well-balanced. Cooper looks poised to be a finalist for ROY. Even if the playoffs don’t happen in 2015, Raiders fans have a lot to look forward to in the near future. Philadelphia Eagles (NFC East): C+ While the Raiders may be the NFL’s biggest surprise, the Eagles may be the NFL’s biggest disappointment. Big free agent acquisition Demarco Murray was dreadful in his first two games having more rushing attempts (21) than actual rushing yards (11). The only reason their grade isn’t lower is because after starting 2015 with a 1-3 record, they’ve managed to win three of their last four with the lone loss coming against undefeated Carolina. In the wide open NFC East, the Eagles could steal it from underneath everyone if Murray and company manage to perform up to expectations. Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North): BMany may think this grade is high. But I am giving the Steelers the benefit of the doubt after seeing QB Ben Roethlisberger go down for a few weeks, as well as star RB Le’Veon Bell suffering a season-ending MCL tear. To be able to retain a winning record through these injuries is impressive in its own light. Deangelo Williams is a capable replacement in the backfield. Roethlisberger and star WR Antonio Brown still make this a dangerous team moving forward and should be considered a favorite to win a wild card spot. San Diego Chargers (AFC West): D It’s hard to assign a D to a team that currently possesses the quarterback with the most yards passing in Philip Rivers. The problem is a Charger defense that currently ranks toward the bottom in both rush and pass defense. Any defense that allows 27.6 PPG is going to make it difficult for the offense to keep pace. It’s sad to see another productive year in Philip Rivers go to waste. San Francisco 49ers (NFC West): F After such a massive roster overhaul and head coaching change in the off-season, the way the 49ers have fared to this point comes as no surprise. QB Colin Kaepernick has been a disaster (five interceptions and five fumbles) and lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert found a way to pull out a win against
68
Atlanta in his first start, but the rest of the season will be hard to watch for 49ers fans. Seattle Seahawks (NFC West): C+ The Seahawks are a perfect example of how preseason predictions can prove to be futile. For anyone that read my NFL season preview article in September, I had high praise and expectations for a Seattle team coming off back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. SS Kam Chancellor’s contract holdout proved to be devastating to the Seahawk’s defense for the games he missed. RB Marshawn Lynch has had injury problems, but has been a non-factor even when on the field (103 rushes for 375 yards and only 2 touchdowns). QB Russell Wilson has been nothing but average (1,878 yards, 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions). What was supposed to be a solid offensive group has been underwhelming. The defense still ranks toward the top of the league. With Arizona doing so well, the Seahawks may be looking more toward a wild card this year. A third straight Super Bowl on the other hand isn’t looking so good in the Emerald City this season.
has two games with four touchdown passes and no interceptions (which tied an NFL record). The defense has been phenomenal under new Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau (fifth in total defense). The issue lies in offensive inconsistency and not being able to hold on to fourth quarter leads. With the AFC South being so weak, all the Titans need is one hot streak and they could actually make their way into the playoffs. Washington Redskins (NFC East): CThe Redskins continue to disappoint. After the Robert Griffin III experiment failed, the torch was handed off to Kirk Cousins, who has kept the passing game toward the middle of the pack. The ground game continues to be the weight that slows down this team from making any serious run. Over half of the games left on
St. Louis Rams (NFC West): C+ Rookie RB Todd Gurley has been impressive for a Rams team that hasn’t had many stars in recent years. He has been vital to the offense as the Ram’s rank at the very bottom of the league in the passing game. If the Rams could get that passing game even just to league average, they could have a real chance at taking the West. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFC South): C Rookie QB and 1st overall pick Jameis Winston has already done enough to double Tampa Bay’s win total from last season. The most important thing for this team is their steady improvement each week. While nobody was expecting playoffs heading into this season, people were expecting improvement. Winston and company have done just that. The future is looking bright in Tampa. Tennessee Titans (AFC South): DRookie QB Marcus Mariota has been great and will be in the conversation for ROY. He already

the Redskins’ schedule are against teams with losing records. Does Cousins and company have what it takes to make a run and capture the weak NFC East? So how did your team do? I know mine did not do well (spoiler alert: I’m a Titans fan). Thankfully, for those like me whose team didn’t do well, hope springs eternal with half a season left. For those whose team is doing well, we hope to feel what you feel sometime soon.

And the Winners Are… THE STORIES BEHIND OUR FAVORITE TOYS
BY JAN ST. GEORGE, “THE TOY LADY”
If you ask an avid baseball fan, he will tell you that the Baseball Hall of Fame is in Cooperstown, New York. Local colleges, including the University of Idaho, have halls of fame to honor student athletes, and the Spokane Arena has the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame.
Puppets appeared thousands of years ago and have played a role in nearly every culture. My childhood puppets include Sherry Lewis’ Lambchop and Ed Sullivan’s Topo Gigio. Teachers and parents appreciate a child’s willingness to listen to a puppet. (Thanks, Elmo!)
So, you’re thinking, tell me something I don’t know. Okay, there’s a Santa Claus Hall of Fame in Santa Claus, Indiana, a Croquet Hall of Fame in West Palm Beach, Florida, and a Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Hayward, Wisconsin.
Twister entered the toy market in a cloud of controversy. Sears Roebuck and Company refused to offer Twister in its 1966 catalog as it felt the game was too racy. However, after Johnny Carson and actress Eva Gabor played the game during a Tonight Show broadcast, sales exceeded three million in 1967.
Have I caught your interest? I hope so, as I’m going to tell you about a hall of fame that celebrates special mementos of our childhoods – toys! In 1998, 11 toys were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. This initial class included Barbie, Crayola crayons, Legos, marbles, Monopoly, and six other “classic” toys. In 1999, six more toys were added, including Duncan yo-yos and hula hoops. From 2000 to 2014, 39 more toys were added. The selection criteria is based on icon-status, longevity, discovery and innovation. But wait, you say. What about 2015? I have breaking news. Out of 12 finalists, the winners are: the classic puppet, the game of Twister and the Super Soaker. (Sorry, coloring book. Maybe next year.)

The Super Soaker is an “oops” example. A nuclear engineer was inventing a new heat pump using water vapor. He hooked the nozzle up to his bathroom faucet. A steady stream of water shot across the room. (Sorry, dear!) He added a PVC pipe and an empty soda bottle, and, after a few modifications, the Super Soaker was born. Is your inner kid wondering what other toys are in the National Toy Hall of Fame? You can get the complete list at www.museumofplay.org. and see them, and more toys, at The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.

You Can’t Out Train Bad Habits CHANGING A HABIT A MONTH MAY CHANGE YOUR LIFE
BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR

Have you ever heard the saying “You can’t out train a bad diet?” I personally say it all the time. If we aren’t mindful of our diet, all the good work we do at the gym or outside could be hidden by our lack of caloric or nutritional accountability. But really, for true wellness, it goes much deeper than what you do or don’t eat. It’s about little and big details of your daily life from how you walk to how you sleep, sit or even communicate. If there is something in your life you don’t like, the new year is approaching and this is a great time to look at what you can do to help yourself. Change a daily habit, and you just might change your life. Do you have back pain and never had an injury that can take credit for it or constant

neck pain that your friends and family say is from the weight of the world you carry on your shoulders? In our current American culture most back and neck pain can be summed up by one common flaw that most of us have. Bad posture. Can’t deny it can you? You probably also think I’m wrong, but I’m most likely not. Not just your sitting posture, but your standing posture, computer posture, studying posture, work posture, getting dressed posture, eating posture, on the phone posture, on the potty posture, texting posture… I could go on forever. Many modern day conveniences have led to aches and pains. It seems counterintuitive to try and make life easier and end up unhealthy. The old adage about there not being any real shortcuts seems to always ring true.

The most prevalent pain I hear about is low back pain. As a physical trainer, it is out of my scope to diagnose so once we have been cleared by medical I ask my clients to do a couple of simple tasks. I might ask them to pretend to tie their shoe, pick something up off the floor or sit on the floor and stand back up again. It is immediately evident if their daily postural habits could be a contributing factor in their pain. Just because a movement doesn’t hurt at the time doesn’t mean it isn’t causing a problem. If you continuously round your back during daily activities, it isn’t if but when will the back pain begin. This doesn’t mean that all back pain is caused by poor posture, but I have never seen a case where daily compression of the lumbar spine hasn’t made whatever is going on worse. The easiest fix is to learn the hip hinge. To get your hands to or closer to the floor, reach towards your toes (being mindful not to round your back) and get your rear end out of the way. These are literally the most common cues to deadlift a barbell which is a form of powerlifting. If you have unexplained low back pain, try not rounding your back for a week and see what happens.
The Spine This doesn’t mean that all back pain is caused by poor posture, but I have never seen a case where daily compression of the lumbar spine hasn’t made whatever is going on worse. or walking, or getting eight hours of sleep each night. Because if you don’t start paying attention to what you do most of the day, the 4 percent of your day you spend in the gym won’t prevent you from having pain. You have the ability to be your own advocate. We only get one body in this life, take care of it!
Another pain that can usually be prevented is upper back or thoracic pain. Again, it could be from a number of problems, but once your doctor has told you they don’t see any reason for

you to be in pain, check your communication habits. Do you cradle your phone between your shoulder and head, do you look down to text or to just look at your phone all day, or do you have a job in front of the computer and are sitting all day? The answer to fixing these problems really are found in the questions themselves. Don’t have your phone lower than eye level, don’t keep it between your shoulder and ear, and for the love of all that is holy stand up every so often and sit without slouching! With the new year around the corner how about you keep this year simple. Change a habit a month. It could be to eat a vegetable at every meal, stop texting while driving, eating,

The Chocolate Prescription

Specializing in Cosmetic Skincare
CAN DIET AND HEALTHY GUMS HELP YOU LIVE LONGER? BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS Here’s your prescription! Take one chocolate bar a week for health heart and be certain to see your dentist regularly. Researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute found that men who ate the most chocolate (2.2 ounces/week) had a 17 percent lower risk for stroke than men who ate little or no chocolate. Combined with similar studies with women, the total risk went down by 19 percent. The study attributed the effect to flavonoids, which lowers blood pressure, increases good cholesterol, improves artery function and may also thin the blood and prevent clotting. However, researchers also noted that those who ate chocolate tended to be more educated, healthier and less likely to smoke. They also had less blood pressure issues. Following a healthy diet, exercising regularly and treating known risk factors such as high blood pressure can lower your risk. Also, moderation is key, as is visiting your physician and dentist on a regular basis. Research also shows an increased risk of health factors correlate to unhealthy gums and bone in your mouth. Bacteria that cause gum disease can circulate in your blood stream every time you eat and brush. Some patients ask me, “Well, then maybe I shouldn’t brush?” If you don’t brush, plaque irritates the gums and causes bleeding. If you brush regularly and clean between your teeth, your gums will be healthier. I think of it as gum exercise. Gums like proper stimulation. Some great aids are the Philips AirFloss and Butler Soft picks.
Gum disease, left untreated, can cause blood sugar levels to be unstable. Also, the bacteria that cause gum disease have been found in the brain tissues, in the placenta of women who deliver low birth weight babies or stillborn babies and in the prostate. Your mouth is truly the gateway to your health, your happiness and a happy stomach (chocolate!!) Seriously, there are alarming statistics that may cause you to be concerned. My practice focuses on overall health of the patient, and based on my research, these facts are eye openers:
Botox® Juvederm® Chemical peels
New Patients Only Botox at $9 a Unit
A woman who smokes has the same risk factor for heart attack as a woman who is 100 pounds overweight. She also has a much higher risk factor for gum disease and stroke. Periodontal disease (a disease that affects the gum and bone around your teeth) has a role in early dementia, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune diseases and more. Patients with periodontal disease can lose their teeth at an earlier age, leading to digestive issues. Most patients that we see want fresh breath and white teeth. They also want to (if possible) keep their teeth for a lifetime. There are ways, with today’s technology, that dentists can make this happen. Your diet, your habits and your lifestyle affect how you feel. In this day and age, you can make your dental needs fit your time and budget. Healthy dentition and diet can add ten years to your life. Is it time to take action?

Play Time PLAYING WITH YOUR CHILD IN A MEANINGFUL WAY BY MIRIAM DRESSLER, DIRECTOR OF LEARNING AND EDUCATION, BLOOM EARLY EDUCATION Playing with your children sounds like a great idea, right? Playing with children isn’t always as easy as it seems for the simple reason that we adults are…well, adults! Somewhere along the way, our sense of play matured into grownup interests, and we no longer live in the imaginary land of suspended time and reality that children prefer to play in.
11430 51st Ave NW Ste 101A Gig Harbor, WA 98332
It is important to remember a few things about play in order to be a good adult play partner:
f gigharborchiropractic&massage
• Play involves a free choice activity that is non-literal, self-motivated, enjoyable and process-oriented. The rules of play are based on the child’s sense of reality. • Children do not play for a reward, praise, money or food. They play because they like it. • Children who compete to make the best wooden ship are not playing. Children who are told that they must use the block with an “A” on it to create a word are not playing, and children who are asked to label the color of their paints instead of using them to create a picture are not playing. • Lots of play at an early age enables children to develop the wide, integrated foundation required for future academic success. It also will develop in our children a love of learning, a love that is desperately needed by children who can look forward to a minimum of 13 years of formal education. • (Wardle, 1987, 1996) From – Early Childhood Education News. To be successful at playing with your child, you’ll need to suspend your sense of time and reality, let go of your rules and embrace your child’s rules, avoid controlling the play and giving instructions, and devote a chunk of your time to playing imaginative, unstructured, child-driven games! Try out these tips: • Commit to at least 20 minutes to the game, especially if it’s a “pretend” game. Tell your child of your time limitations before starting to avoid tears and disappointments when you withdraw. • Ask the “rules” of the game before you start and then follow them. • Play like a child, not like a grown up. • Share, cooperate, listen and contribute, just as you would expect from another child. • Don’t be bossy – you are playing, not parenting! • If you end up in conflict, work it out within the boundaries of the play and not as a parent. Avoid saying: “I won’t continue playing if you act like this.” Your goal is to foster cooperation and problem solving, not apply discipline. • Play at least once a day! Play is the work of children, and when you take the opportunity to play with your children, you get to observe their progress and development first hand. • Playing with your children results in them liking you more (yes, they LOVE you; but do they LIKE you?). And children who like the adults in their lives, also tend to be more cooperative and respectful towards adults.

Win the Craving Battle KNOWING WHY AND SAYING GOOD-BYE BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST
Cravings are a natural phenomena of life. Without these primal signals for nutrient needs, our species may cease to exist! There are a few predominant reasons for why we experience food cravings and many ways to combat them. The cravings that plague us today can still be deeply rooted in our physiological needs but can also be a result of the constant bombardment of food advertising. When was the last time you shopped in a non-grocery store (say, an office supply or home goods store) and weren’t tempted with chocolate, chips, sweetened beverages and candy at the checkout? We make over 1,000 food decisions a day, mostly subconsciously, so here’s how to tune in and help you win that three o’clock battle. Why We Crave It’s just as important to know why we crave as it is to know what we crave. The top four reasons for food cravings are:
Attempting to “trick” your body by feeding it something similar to what it wants, think non-fat frozen yogurt for that ice cream craving, you may wind up even more unsatisfied and with a craving even stronger than before. Here are some strategies to work through common food cravings, the result of fluctuations in blood sugar, hormones and stress. • Start your day with a balanced breakfast that contains at least 20 grams of protein to reduce the likelihood of a mid-day sugar craving. • Cravings are often hunger in disguise. Reach for balanced snacks that contain fat, protein and carbohydrates like an apple and peanut butter, to balance blood sugar.
1. Dehydration – Dehydration is most often experienced as hunger.
• They can also be thirst in disguise so drink a full glass of water and see if that helps.
2. Nutritional Deficiencies - Long distance runners may crave red meat due to their higher iron needs. People with inadequate mineral intake may crave salt. Dieters who are in a caloric deficit crave high-calorie foods because their bodies believe to be in starvation.
• Decrease stress in your life. Sometimes cravings may be induced by an anxietyprovoking task like talking to your boss or giving a presentation. Identify stresstriggers and adapt a different coping skill in those situations (deep breaths, relaxing tea, etc).
3. Hormonal Imbalances – Most women report specific cravings related to their menstrual cycles. In reality, they are in need of specific nutrients to support each phase.
• Avoid added sugars –they just make you want more!
4. Feelings & Emotions – If you’re angry, tired, bored or lonely, your body may try to distract you with cravings. It’s called soul food for a reason! Bye-Bye Cravings Resisting food cravings is not always the way to go. If our bodies are trying to tell us we need a specific nutrient, listen. Or, if the craving is believed to be purely psychological, you deserve that piece of chocolate, then go for it (but only if you know when to stop).
• Decrease caffeine consumption – caffeine can influence dramatic peaks and valleys in our blood sugar management. Drink caffeine only in the mornings and pair it with protein or fat. • Stop and assess WHY you may be having this craving using HALT- B; ask yourself are you Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired or Bored? • Work with your health care provider to figure out if cravings are a result of poor glucose control, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, an infection, poor stress adaptation or a hormonal imbalance.

Did you know that Gig Harbor has its own Zagat-rated restaurant? If you have not had the opportunity to try the Green. From the warm, cozy fireplace at the center of the restaurant, to the friendly servers, Green.House is the place to be. When you enter the Green.House restaurant, the first person you will see is Gail, who warmly welcomes you and lights up a room with her generous and sincere smile. Chef Scott adds, “We pride ourselves on creating remarkable meals, always focusing on exceptional flavor and generous portions that are both easy on the eyes and a thrill to the senses. We work hard on keeping our menu fresh and seasonal, rotating many menu items three to four times per year. However, there will always remain a place on our menu for our signature dishes.” Whether a customer is sampling one of the hearty and delicious pasta dishes, steak or coconut prawns, the staff at Green.House understands the goal is to exceed customers’ expectations each and every time. Chef Scott continues, “The best part of owning a restaurant in Uptown is surely our clientele. We value them and never lose sight of the

fact that our restaurant is all about providing them with exceptional service and memorable meals. Since everyone on our staff is all about customer service, menu items can be altered to accommodate most dietary requirements. Chef Jose Guillermo, who is the heart of our kitchen, always welcomes opportunities to modify menu items to ensure that everyone receives the meal they are hoping for.” But, the proof can always be found in how customers feel about the Green.House restaurant. One customer, who was visiting from Las Vegas, happily noted, “Every star is warranted! SKI THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
There’s a mountain out there for you! By Colin Anderson. Photos of Schweitzer Mountain Resort courtesy Schweitzer Mountain Resort. To put it bluntly, the 2014/2015 ski season was awful. Little snow and lots of rain add up to not a lot of fun out on the slopes. It happens from time to time, so let us all cross our fingers that it doesn’t happen again (you should have been doing your pray for snow dance months ago!). What’s wonderful about skiing in the west is even if the conditions are less than ideal, there are unique communities, resorts, activities and scenic drives to explore all over, not to mention enough mountains to keep you busy for a lifetime. There are options for those seeking the steepest chutes and deepest powder, lavish resorts with plush ski in/ski out accommodations. Small town mom and pop

The village is enormous and despite hundreds of thousands of visitors, lift lines are generally short. You can enjoy fine dining at Everett’s 8,800 feet in the air or choose from 48 other dining options. Four hundred inches of annual snowfall and runs as long as six miles guarantee for a memorable day on the mountain with plenty to keep you entertained off. More skiing terrain than any other resort in North America, Whistler is on the bucket list of almost all serious skiers and riders. Whistler celebrates 50 years this winter with all kinds of parties and events planned. If you’re still feeling crowded, the mountain offers heli-skiing to untouched powder. Red Mountain continues to pile up accolades from national media large in part to Rossland, the ideal small town ski village. About 3,500 people call this place home, but they are all in on the outdoors. About any outdoor activity can be found here and the mountain is less than 10 minutes from downtown so no matter where you stay, it’s easy to commute back and forth.
