PUBLISHER 2018 ... Bring it On! IT HAS BEEN AN EXCITING YEAR at Living Local 360, and looking ahead there are more good things to come in 2018! First and foremost, as I reflect on the past year and beyond, I feel very blessed to work with such great businesses, organizations and people in each community that we serve. We are embraced with enthusiasm by not only our clients but by all those who read our publications in print and online. We thoroughly enjoy partnering with our clients to help market and brand their businesses. Seeing their success is inspiring. Bringing you the “good news” stories of the community and beyond is something about which we are passionate. There is so much good happening right here locally, and it often gets overlooked. To that end we are committed to working even closer with the nonprofit organizations in our community—those who give tirelessly to make life better for those less fortunate, whether it is those battling cancer, abused and neglected children, people who struggle to put food on the table and more. We are here to help share their mission and educate the community about their needs. In 2018, we have a lot of exciting things happening. First, you will notice a new design for our magazines. It is always our desire to bring a fresh, new look to our product, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.”

Like Media is also launching a new company, Rocket Fish Digital. Through this we will assist your business with all you need to improve your digital footprint. You will be able to track your analytics and even monitor reviews others post about your business. We look forward to 2018 and thank you for helping us connect the community through our products. Happy New Year!

WHY TO INVEST YOUR MONEY IN HIGH-QUALITY ITEMS

NO MATTER HOW MUCH something costs, it’s hard to part with our hard-earned money to buy it. It’s even tougher to fork over cash when we are talking about spending money on something that we can probably live without. The little voice of reason in our heads is saying that we can make do with that old sofa or maybe those kitchen cabinets will last a few more years … but really it boils down to the fact that we want those new things and feel. Ultimately, they will improve the quality of our lives and no doubt improve the quality of our homes as well. Updating and improving your home’s interiors really can increase your happiness. It makes your time there more enjoyable; it makes you happy to entertain guests. It makes you happy knowing that you’re increasing your home’s worth, and—for most of us—we enjoy the shopping process. I see it every day; wives pulling their

WISE PURCHASING DECISIONS

A A A H!

affordable adaptable alternative housing

husbands into the stores to look at interior finishes, browsing cabinet door styles, window coverings and furniture. If you haven’t been a part of this, you’ve seen or heard about it from your friends. It is a process. You weigh the pros and cons, take samples home to look at colors, discuss price, get friends’ opinions, etc. It takes time, and although it can be tiring, making all those decisions is kind of fun. Sometimes those decisions are based on budget, and sometimes they are based on desire. More often than not, the budget overrules the desire. But sometimes the budget needs to take a backseat to what really makes sense. A saying was brought to my attention recently, and it really spoke to me: “It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money—that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying too little and getting a lot—it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have had enough to pay for something better.” (The Lowest Bidder by John Ruskin.) Given this information, there are other things beside budget to consider when you are shopping. Is the product made domestically (USA)? What kind of warranty does it carry? Does the company you are purchasing it from have good options for what you need? Do they have a good reputation?

You name it. tiny house, granny suite, backyard cottage, sidekick-in-law, attached or detached, basement apartment, compact design, small footprint housing, love shack, on-grid-off-grid

Simple law of business … there’s a reason showrooms with experienced professionals and high-quality products are priced higher. It’s OK to loosen the budget a bit knowing that the purchases are not something we will regret later or that they are of low quality. Ultimately, all that time spent squeezing the budget could have been better spent enjoying our purchase and the peace of mind we have long after the purchase.

We build it. BRETT MARLO DESIGN BUILD

www.IntegrativeBody.net

GIG HARBOR IS A WONDERFUL intergenerational community with a thriving population of young families who have children of all ages and sandwiched generation families who are caring for aging parents while still raising active kids. We worry about the safety of our children and our parents whenever we are not present to supervise. We are emotionally invested in our homes for all the memories that fill each room. In a study by AARP (Source: AARP PPI, “What is Livable? Community Preferences of Older Adults,” April 2014), “87 percent of adults age 65-plus want to stay in their current home and community as they age. Among people age 50 to 64, 71 percent of people want to age in place.” Too often, people start worrying about where and how they will spend the fourth quarter of their life when the options may already be limited, like after a fall with serious injury or a progressive illness. In Gig Harbor, many older homes are multilevel with steep stairways to basements for laundry facilities and garage access. Several have steep driveways and steps to enter. Some bathrooms do not accommodate wheelchairs or allow the use of safety equipment such as a tub transfer bench or toilet rails. Sadly, many of the newer 55-plus housing tracts do not meet the standards of an “aging in place” home. Occupational Therapists (OTs) are educated and have training in home safety assessments (for discharge planning at hospitals or nursing facilities) to ensure their patient is safe to return home after a surgery or illness, so they won’t be homebound or injured trying to bathe or use the toilet. OTs will make a home visit with the patient to see if they can enter and exit their home safely, access the bathroom and recommend safety equipment that will facilitate independence

and safety. A home health OT performs this assessment when the patient is discharged home with known accessibility concerns. Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) are occupational therapists who have additional education and training, and are (ideally) experienced working in the building industry to recommend the best modification to allow a person to remain in their home until the very end. They work well with contractors in problem-solving accessibility challenges, and being clinicians, recommend features that may become necessary as a disease or illness progresses. CAPS OT assessments are affordable and can save thousands of dollars in home modification revisions because of missed details. They offer the best solutions for families with disabled family members of any age and help their clients to thrive—not just age—in place.

TALKING TO YOUR HEIRS ABOUT YOUR ESTATE PLAN AVOID PROBLEMS LATER THROUGH CANDID TALK NOW PROVIDED BY CHERI JOHNSON, FINANCIAL ADVISOR/PLANNER, SENIOR DIRECTOR, STRATEGIC WEALTH ADVISORS TALKING ABOUT “THE END” is not the easiest thing to do. This is one reason why some people never adequately plan for the transfer of their wealth, and some create estate plans with their financial professionals yet leave their heirs out of the conversation. Have you told your loved ones a little about your estate plan? This is a matter of personal preference: Share a great deal of information or keep most of the details to yourself. Either way, they should know some basics. Having this talk can become easier when it is a values conversation, not a money conversation. You can explain to your heirs that your values are at the core of the decisions you have made. You need not tell them how much they will inherit but tell them the planning steps you’ve taken to make a difficult time a bit easier. Tell your loved ones that you have a will and/ or a revocable living trust. In all probability, your executor/successor trustee has been informed—but other heirs may not know who the executor/ successor trustee will be. Explain your advance health-care directive and inform them who you have named as an agent to make health-care decisions on your behalf if you cannot do so. Provide contact information for any financial, insurance, legal and medical professionals you consult. Tell your heirs the role they have played for you and why the judgment of these professionals should be trusted. Do people beyond your household need to know any of this? Think about it for a second. If you have grandchildren, nieces or nephews, do they figure into your estate plan? Is it appropriate to let them know that you have made an estate-planning decision or two on their behalf? Have you notified charities of

your intent to make a gift from your estate? Are there business partners who need to be informed of estate-planning intentions you have? You may choose to keep certain details private. Keeping everything to yourself, however, can be problematic. Are your heirs aware of the location of your health care proxy? Might they discover that you have planned for some of your estate to transfer to charity only after your death? Dilemmas and surprises like these may be avoided through communication—communication that anyone planning an estate should make a priority.

Your Life. Your Goals. Our Focus. Are you confident in your financial planning – retirement - legacy? Join me for a confidential and complimentary discussion to make sure you’re headed in the right direction. • • • • • • • •

Income Stress Test Investment Management Retirement Income Strategies Social Security Maximization 401k Evaluation Beneficiary Audit Legacy Planning Risk Protection

Not every couple or individual does, though. A study of high net-worth clients were asked if they had disclosed the location of their wills/power-of-attorney forms with their heirs. Thirteen percent of respondents said their heirs had no clue; 25 percent said “only my spouse and I” knew the location of the documents. A 2017 poll determined that just 42 percent of Americans had gone so far as to draw up a will, let alone an estate plan. So, if you have planned for the transfer of your wealth, you are ahead of many of your peers. A good next step is to communicate this with your family. HOW WILL YOU DESIGN 2018? DON’T BE FUZZY ON THE DETAILS BY DEBORAH OLIVE, BUSINESS/LIFE COACH

NO BURNOUT

WELCOME TO 2018! How will you design your year? Or will you let outer circumstances dictate the coming year? The time and energy it takes to artfully design your year is entirely worth the effort.

of time, resources and creativity to craft a clear vision. They may have a tired vision that no longer sparks their enthusiasm. It’s not just your vision that needs clarity.

Your first step is to create clarity.

Why are you doing what you’re doing? If your answer is, “To make money,” it’s not enough for the long haul. Does your “why” energize you? Does it match your talent, personality and sense of purpose? Do you greet most days with enthusiasm, inspired by your day-to-day activities? If the answer is, “No,” it’s time to revisit this. Whether it takes a few tweaks or a genuine overhaul, getting to a clear “Yes” on this question can change the quality of your life.

Most people are rather fuzzy on their results. Consider the entrepreneur who’s designing, experimenting and expanding their business, and the business takes more time than expected from their spouse and trips to the gym. They’re proud of their clarity with their business but aren’t prepared for the impact on their family and health. Consider the business owner whose focus is on their exit strategy, but they haven’t thought through the impact of their non-working hours on key relationships. Most business owners are neither starting nor stopping their business. They’re taking care of clients, employees, inventory and so on, but markets change. Innovative and successful entrepreneurs and business owners tend to rely on their ability to shift when the need arises and skip the investment

A year ago, Ryan was headed for burnout. He started his career running errands in his father’s construction company and worked his way up to running the business—only to “lose it all” during the Great Recession. His father retired. Ryan started a new business. He didn’t realize how much he needed to retool his skills nor that his new skills would bring him out of his zone of genius. You see, Ryan is great at sizing up new projects, putting together deals and managing people to great results, but his new business required him to focus on details and build an infrastructure. What made him successful in his father’s much larger construction company wasn’t sufficient to build a successful startup. Soon Ryan was taking business, inconsistent with his brand, so he could pay the bills. Even with a seasoned team, he worked crazy long hours. He struggled for years and over time, he was uninspired by what he did.

GO BIG!

He hired me to help him “Go Big Without Burnout.” We started by identifying his area of genius and why he enjoys construction. Next, we crafted a clear vision for both his business and his

Having answered “Why?” and “What?”, we shifted our attention to “Who?” We identified the areas with the greatest impact on his business. He needed to hire people, inspired by his vision, with skills to complement his own, so he’d struggle less. He hired someone in the field who required less supervision. Then he selected computer technology to consolidate critical areas in his business and enhance communication with staff, clients and vendors. Finally, he hired an office manager who thrives on computer technology to help him build his business infrastructure. During the past four months, Ryan completed several projects. His new projects are consistent with his brand. It’ll take another 90 days for his new computer system to be fully functioning, but even now, significantly more of his daily activities are in his zone of genius. His monthly revenue is up. He has more time with his family, works out at the gym four days a week and smiles more. For the first time in a long time, he’s looking forward to the New Year.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

PIER INTO THE NIGHT Explore What’s Beneath The Surface. By Jillian Chandler.

THE FIRST SATURDAY OCTOBER THROUGH MARCH, Harbor WildWatch holds its Pier into the Night program, in which a large silver screen and projector is set up displaying a live camera feed from scuba divers. “The divers swim below Jerisich dock in search of interesting animals that the naturalist on shore can talk about,” says Executive Director Rachel Easton. “Being able to virtually dive beneath Puget Sound is an experience in itself, but the fact that our event happens after dark gives the program extra appeal. We never know what we might find, and that mystery keeps us on our toes. This is unscripted wildlife!”

Pier into the Night appeals to those curious about what animals live in Puget Sound and who are interested in learning how to be good stewards of that habitat. According to Easton, at Harbor WildWatch, they always strive to incorporate stewardship into every program they do. Be sure to dress warm, bring a chair and umbrella (though there is a canopy set up) and arrive at Jerisich dock a little before 5pm on Saturday, January 6 (6pm on February 3 and 7pm on March 3). The dive lasts approximately 40 minutes, with some time allowed afterward for questions and an interview with the diver. The whole program takes about 60 minutes.

Though it’s recommended for children 5 and older, as the little ones can have a hard time sitting still during the program, Easton says, “Our naturalists do a good job of making it fun for all ages. It’s one of my favorite programs because the age range is so wide. It’s awesome to see students, parents and grandparents learning alongside one another, and I can only imagine what conversations it sparks on the ride home.”

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Pier into the Night is a free event, though there is a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 per family, with the funds going to help fulfill Harbor WildWatch’s mission of “inspiring stewardship of Puget Sound by providing learning opportunities about the environment to the people of our local communities,” says Easton.

SOUTH PUGET SOUND’S NEW

DINING & SOCIAL EXPERIENCE BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

TROY ALSTEAD, FORMER COO of Starbucks, is bringing a new dining and social experience to the South Sound—Ocean5. Targeted to open this winter, Ocean5, located in the new Olympic Towne Center in Gig Harbor, has been fashioned to be a world-class, sustainably responsible destination for fun and connections.

Social experiences will include duckpin and 10pin bowling, a laser challenge arena, arcade game room, over 4,000 square feet of event space for groups of two to over 400, and more. Team members will be focused on helping guests relax and have fun. “Responsible design has been a cornerstone of Ocean5 since before the foundation was even poured,” says Troy. “Thoughtful attention was paid to every detail to minimize fossil fuel and energy use throughout the building.” Given its large size, this presented some unique challenges that were met with equally creative solutions. A geothermal heat pump regulates Ocean5 temperature by moving existing heat from one place to another—from the surrounding earth into the building to warm it in the winter and out of the building into the earth in the summer. “This system alone will save about 175 to 200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year,” according to Troy. Along with the oversized windows to draw in natural light, the solar tubes used in the lane areas and LED bulbs throughout the building help the space feel bright during the day saving energy and offering the gaming areas a sense of airiness. In addition, the gorgeous wood you see throughout the interior is locally sourced, and the carpet tiles are made from old fishing nets “harvested” from some of the ocean floors.

“We’re on a sustainability journey, starting at a point that we’re proud of but knowing there are always innovations and committing to continuously improve,” Troy says. “This goes for everything from the decisions of building materials, how we operate, to how we source our food.” The adjoined farm-to-table restaurant— Table 47— was also designed for groups to gather in spaces like the community table, chef ’s counter, social bar and relaxing coffee café. The chef-driven menu features farm-fresh, seasonal and local ingredients, so parts of it may change often based on what’s available. When it comes to what Troy has found most rewarding when it comes to his new endeavor, he says, “The work I do is rewarding to me in a few ways. First: the opportunity to create a great place for people to work, based on the principles of integrity and honesty, passion and energy for what we do, collaboration, personal growth and development, and community engagement. Second: the chance to bring something exciting, fun and meaningful to the community we live in, to be much more than just a business in the community—instead, to be a part of

the community. And third: the imperative to create a responsible business that recognizes its role in creating awareness of the challenges facing our oceans and seas, and engagement to find solutions to these problems.” Troy was born and raised in the South Sound. After graduating from the University of Washington, his corporate career took him all over the world. And while he has had the opportunity to live and experience incredible places and cultures, he says, “The South Sound region is among the most beautiful anywhere, and it is home! And this is where we wanted to live, to raise our family and be part of the community.” He adds: “I have experienced the energy that comes from innovating and creating, from building high-performing teams and successful businesses. And I have learned the imperative of giving back to the community and to the world.” Ocean5 5268 Point Fosdick Drive NW Gig Harbor, Washington 98335 O5Social.com

GIG HARBOR EAGLES 2809

Eagles Soar to Help Others

By Kellie French ACCORDING TO THE OFFICIAL Fraternal Order of the Eagles website, the Eagles is “an international nonprofit organization uniting fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice and equality to make human life more desirable by lessening its ills and promoting peace, prosperity, gladness and hope,” with the motto being “People Helping People.”

Our first civic project was Gig Harbor City Park in which the club was instrumental in having the deed reverted to the City of Gig Harbor from the school district. The park was in disrepair, and many hours were spent by the members of Gig Harbor Aerie in maintaining the park, cutting the grass, revamping the restrooms and cooking area. For many years this is where the club held the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

The Gig Harbor Eagles Aerie 2809 was instituted on April 24, 1948, with 228 charter members. They would have gatherings and dinners which their wives would help host and put on. The ladies Auxiliary was instituted on April 29, 1950, with 54 charter members. The only two charter members left are Eric O. Asplund and his wife Bette. The first meetings were held in the basement of the Pastime Building until 1956 and then moved to Fortnightly Hall. In April of 1958, the Gig Harbor Eagles moved into their new Aerie Home, where they still are today.

Gig Harbor Aerie and its Auxiliary have spent many hours in our community projects. The club has had a Christmas party, Halloween and Easter Egg Hunt every year since we were instituted for the children of Gig Harbor and surrounding area. The Eagles also have scholarships each year and sponsor various activities. Gig Harbor Aerie and Auxiliary have dinners on most Friday nights and special occasions. Dancing is also held on Friday nights and Saturday nights, breakfast every Sunday. Other special occasions include Crab Feeds, Buffalo Feed, Pig Roast, Annual PicNic, Children’s Christmas Party, Halloween, Sweetheart Ball, fundraisers for scholarships and charities. The hall is available for rent for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, etc. Receptions are held for deceased members. A Memorial is held each May for deceased

According to an article of a past president and charter member, “Our first fundraiser was for the stage curtain at Peninsula High School when it was built. $500 was raised, which was a large amount in those days. This fundraiser was a dance held at Horseshoe Lake Pavilion, which has since been torn down.

members of the Aerie and Auxiliary. We also have an RV and motorcycle club for those interested.” According to Ruby Gibson, the current manager, the Club has nearly 900 members. Ruby has been the manager for two years. She has been a member of the Auxiliary for 20 years and was a bartender for the Eagles for 16 years. The story of how Ruby came into the Eagles Club is a perfect example of the commitment of the club to make lives better for others. Ruby’s profession was in the banking industry. When her husband passed away, Ruby’s friends invited her to come to the Eagles. There were many social events at the time, and Ruby felt it was a safe place for a single woman to go and socialize. She was still doing a lot of volunteer work for the Eagles when she was asked to become manager. When Ruby took over, the club was having a difficult time financially, but with a great board or trustees, staff and members, the club was able to turn it around. Leadership was strategic in eliminating unneeded costs. The addition of new events and activities also helped to generate revenue. The Gig Harbor Eagles has the largest dance floor in Gig Harbor. All of the dinners, breakfasts, special functions and events are done by volunteers—The Fraternal Order of Eagles depends on their volunteers. “We have something going on almost every day and night,” said Ruby.

The Gig Harbor Eagles has a huge reach in the community and fundraising. In September, an annual “Fun Vention” was held of past presidents of the Aerie and Auxiliary in the state of Washington to raise money for scholarships for high school graduates; those who are about to graduate or those who are about to go on to college. The Auxiliary was able to donate $10,000 to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital last year. Money is raised every year from the Annual Heart Ball. Other charity fundraisers are held for diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Jimmy Durante’s Abused Children’s Fund and Pope’s Kids Place. The Aerie, Auxiliary and Vagabond RV Club gave $500 each, which was sent to Eagles in Texas for the flood victims. The Eagles is also a great source of social events. People can book wedding, birthday parties, holiday parties and more at the Eagles facility. A Membership Drive Open House Halloween Party was held in October. It was a great success with 350 tickets and some great costumes, according to Ruby. As one can see, the Gig Harbor Eagles do not just fly but soar in helping the community in diverse ways. GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS

EDG3 FUND

COMPETITION KnifeForkSpoon selected as semi-finalist for 2017 By Marguerite Cleveland n 2017, Gig Harbor local business KnifeForkSpoon competed in Kitsap Bank’s edg3 FUND small business competition and was ultimately chosen as a semifinalist. KnifeForkSpoon sells frozen meal kits that are homemade and prepared with local foods as much as possible. The meals are designed to be quickly prepared to free up time for consumers with busy lives. KnifeForkSpoon plans meals, grocery shops and then does all the prep work so all you have to do is cook the meal.

I

Owner Abbie Cates learned about the competition from her local Kitsap Bank teller who provided her with an information packet. “At the time, I thought it was an awesome idea, but I was very busy and not sure how it fit into my schedule or plans. I mentioned it to my financial advisor. She is truly a light in my life. She understood how busy I was and why I felt like I shouldn’t apply.” Her advisor refused to listen to Cates’ excuses and gave her an ultimatum. “$20,000 is $20,000; you really should apply,” she told Cates, adding, “If you opt not to apply you can find someone else to manage your money.” “Touché! That wasn’t an option! I am so grateful she pushed me to do it,” said Cates. Edg3 FUND was created to recognize small businesses that are not only working hard to make a profit but are also having a positive impact on the community. It was introduced in 2014 by Kitsap Bank’s Green Team to commemorate Earth Day and has continued as an annual event held during Global Entrepreneurship Week. “Edg3 FUND’s mission is to provide funding for entrepreneurs dedicated to growing our community economically, socially and environmentally. As a family owned community bank, we understand the unique challenges faced by small businesses. One of the biggest barriers for entrepreneurs can be a lack of funding, and that is one of the reasons why we created edg3 FUND,” stated Tony George, Kitsap Bank president and chief operating officer. “We think there are a lot of innovative businesses with creative ideas in our local market that we don’t yet know, and with this competition, we hope to uncover some of these hidden gems, fund a creative, sustainable business idea and help to take it to the next level.”

The competition covers all of Kitsap Bank’s market area in Western Washington and is open to all small businesses. Contestants submit an application and a two-minute video about their business, which are reviewed by a panel of judges. (Information provided by Kitsap Bank) The edg3 FUND judges were impressed by the KnifeForkSpoon’s successes during its first few months of operation, as well as its commitment to provide convenient and healthy meals using quality local ingredients. The judges thought there was a definite need in the Gig Harbor community for this type of business. KnifeForkSpoon was ultimately chosen as a semifinalist for the 2017 edg3 FUND competition. Cates received the notice that KnifeForkSpoon was chosen as a semifinalist while she was in a meeting. “I was surprised and honored. My voicemail turns to text and pops up on my phone. I stole a quick peek at it and lost all professional bearing. It was so exciting,” she said. Once selected, the 16 semifinalists competed online for votes with five selected as finalists. “The voting period opened a lot of great doors in terms of new contacts. It also pushed my comfort zone on connecting with people and tooting my own horn. It was wonderful growth for me personally and for the business,” said Cates. Although KnifeForkSpoon was not chosen as a finalist, Cates was grateful for the experience. “I learned a lot. People I didn’t know were supporting me. Watching the other semifinalists’ videos and looking at their sites was a lot of fun. My favorite part of the entire process was listening to the finalists present at the live event. What a treat! I took plenty of notes and am still putting them to use in my own business.” One of the reasons Cates participated in the competition was to move her company to the next level by entering the wholesale market. “We are already moving down the wholesale path. We have boxes printed; we have contacts made. Wholesale is a major focus for us right now,” she said. Cates is also working to improve the marketing of her business. “We are tossing around ideas on how to best do videos and a YouTube channel. That is a work in progress as we speak.” KnifeForkSpoon plans to enter the 2018 competition. “We were just talking about that here in the kitchen.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

42

We will likely compete again. Our plan next year will be more concise with our implementation plan to be more focused.” One of the requirements in the competition is a company’s ability to meet the edge3 FUND mission of growing the community economically, socially and environmentally. Cates realized she needs to include more information on their generous donations to the community. “As a company we donate food, gift certificates and our time to many local nonprofits. I did not include any of that in my application or video. Watching the finalists, I realized that was a huge omission on my part. Being socially responsible and meeting the triple bottom line is important to me, and proudly sharing that should be just as important,” she said. KnikeForkSpoon is located at 2609 Jahn Avenue NW, Suite F5, in Gig Harbor. They are open Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday by appointment. Gig Harbor High School GIG HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL junior Brynna Maxwell knows what she wants in life and is working hard to achieve her goals. She would like to play Division I basketball, and her ambition is sure to get her there. Last year, the Lady Tides won district for the first time in school history and made it to the second round of the state tournament. Brynna was selected to the All Area and All State teams last year. In addition, she works hard to maintain an impressive 3.9 GPA. “My dream is to play basketball professionally,” said Brynna. “After that, I want to either be a teacher or a coach. MAKING A DIFFERENCE ONE STUDENT AT A TIME: COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF PENINSULA

BY PAULA LARSON

Communities in Schools of Peninsula volunteers and employees may not wear capes or run faster than a locomotive, but this nonprofit has worked tirelessly for 18 years to assist PSD students who are struggling in school become students who graduate on time and contribute to our community. “What we do is we target youth who are most likely to drop out of school and we provide them with academic and social support to help them stay in school and hopefully become successful,” says CISP board member Cheri Johnson. “Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” CISP is our local affiliate of a national program that has been the nation’s top dropout prevention program for decades. When CISP started back in 2000, around 30 percent of PSD students were dropping out of school. Since CISP started, the dropout rate of the district has been cut in half. Their goal is to have every student graduate on time with their classmates. What’s the secret to their success? One-to-one volunteer mentors are the

cornerstones of the program. CISP volunteers provide direct mentorship for kids whose teachers or counselors have identified as needing a little extra help to succeed in school. These volunteers sit down with kids regularly to help with reading, math and more for those in elementary school all the way through high school. But these volunteers go beyond helping with reading and math skills. Each student’s situation is unique, and the relationships that these volunteers build with the kids help them understand the unique barriers to success that each child faces. “The mentors start building a rapport and start building a trust and a connection with these students,” explains board member Jennifer Stiefel. “It’s a way to have a conversation with these kids. It’s a way to break down those barriers so that they know they have a loving, trusted adult that they can turn to. We actually get to the root of it and identify their needs.”

“We do honestly make a difference, one child at a time,” agrees Johnson. “Not every child has the same struggles, but we are able to give oneon-one help so these kids get through school. Those supportive and healthy relationships between mentors and mentees are immediate, they’re long term and they contribute to so many benefits: increased graduation rates, lower dropout levels, healthier lifestyle choices, better attitudes. We see higher college enrollment rates and higher educational aspirations.” The numbers tell the story of CISP’s success. During the 2016-17 school year, 127 CISP volunteers provided one-to-one mentoring with 318 PSD students. One-hundred percent of these students had improved behavior in school, 93 percent achieved college/career goals and 84 percent had measurably improved academics.

It’s important to reach kids as young as possible to get them on track as the issues that lead to children dropping out of school start very early in their school years. CISP provides mentoring for kids starting in first grade. “We start young because we’ve learned that often, the trajectory of kids who drop out of school, you can identify those in the third grade,” says Johnson. “It really starts that young. So we get to kids very early.” The relationships between the mentors and students result in almost immediate benefits for the students. It’s the relationships and the benefits to children that have won over Johnson and Stiefel, two local business owners and parents who volunteer their time to serve on the CISP board. “I’ve served on a variety of boards, and they’ve all done good things, but this organization has

just won me over because I see the direct results time and time again with these kids,” says Johnson. “You just have to look at the smiling face of a young person that has overcome an obstacle in learning or in life and see that they are excited and enthused about the future. It’s very worthwhile.” “It’s such a powerful program that you actually see results in the kids, and you see results in the classroom,” agrees Stiefel. “To be a part in something that actually sees results immediately is pretty powerful, and it’s just something I’m completely drawn to. You see results pretty instantaneously.” CISP has many programs for students beyond providing mentors. Students in the program get snacks. They work with families to make sure kids get Christmas presents. CISP has site coordinators in several PSD schools who help identify needs and assist the families get the services they need. They collect donations and partner with several local businesses to provide whatever kids require to fully participate in school activities and have a “typical” student experience. CISP has provided school supplies, shoes for gym class, clothes for band, visits to the dentist and much more. It’s a holistic approach, helping students and their families, all in an effort to keep the students on track.

CISP is always on the lookout for volunteers and donations to reach as many of our students as possible. If you are interested in volunteering, you can contact volunteer coordinator Cathy Rich (cathy@cisofpeninsula.org). To donate, go to their web page (Peninsula.CISWA. org) or contact director Colleen Speers (colleen@cisofpeninsula.org).

A/C and Winter Weather Have you ever wondered why it sounds like your air conditioning comes on when you use your defroster? The air conditioning system removes moisture from the air before blowing it into the passenger compartment. The air passes through the evaporator, which is cooled by the refrigerant in the system. The moisture in the air then clings to the cold pipes, and dry air is released to clear your windshield. This aids the drying of the windshield and side window glass when fogged up. Some manufacturers turn off the A/C if you use the blended defrost mode (half to windshield and half to the heater/floor). If that’s your preferred mode, and it’s not clearing your windshield fast enough, you can manually turn on the A/C by pressing the A/C button on most cars. The evaporator is the same unit in your old freezer that ices up. That’s why you get a puddle of water behind the right front wheel in the summer; the evaporator ice is melting. If you get noise from the engine area when using your defroster this winter, it might be the A/C system having troubles. Call your service provider to have it diagnosed.

JOE AND AUDREY TURCO decided to make the move to Gig Harbor nearly 30 years ago to raise their family—and make it their home. What initially attracted them to the area was the small-town feel. And soon they would discover the friendliness and kindness of their neighbors. Three decades later, they continue to be grateful to live—and own a business—in this tightknit community.

Joe and Audrey enjoy their time they spend raising their 11-year-old grandson or anytime they get a chance to be with their two granddaughters. They also enjoy taking their classic cars to shows, and there’s always time to ride the quads or entertain a house full of Seahawk fans. Joe’s fascination with all things mechanical started at a young age. As a child, Joe’s parents were very supportive. His father encouraged him to explore anything mechanical and allowed Joe to disassemble anything he could put his hands on (to his mother’s discontent), so he could get a feel for how things operated. Joe’s mom learned early on that if the toaster or coffee maker was missing, she knew who the culprit was. Joe has been in the automotive industry for 35 years and servicing all makes and models of cars and light trucks in Gig Harbor and Pierce County for more than 15 years (as a local mechanic); five years at their current location at 3523 57th Street Court NW. Joe has created relationships built on honesty and trust with his customers. Turco’s Automotive strives to keep up to date utilizing the latest diagnostic equipment, informational resources and technical training. They offer full-service auto repairs specializing in a wide range of domestic and import vehicles. Whether your vehicle requires major repairs, scheduled maintenance or diagnostic repairs, Joe and his team are committed to bringing you the best customer service possible. In addition, all of their work comes with a 24 month/24,000 mile parts and labor warranty. “We truly enjoy fixing cars, and we love

helping people,” says Joe. “And when the two come together, it’s a great feeling! We want people to rely on us for their automotive needs.” When it comes to what the Turcos find most rewarding each and every day, they say: “When our customers feel we’re being honest about their car needs. When they walk away feeling good about doing business with Turco’s Automotive. And we know they’re safe on the road.” Joe recognizes that none of this can be possible without loyal employees Doug and Mitch. As Joe says, Doug and Mitch have both been important assets to the success of the business, and he is truly grateful for what they contribute to the company through their trustworthiness and honesty. The friendships Joe has made along the way has contributed to his overall success in business. In addition, he looks forward to continuing to grow his relationships in the community. If you are looking for a trusted automotive business in Gig Harbor, look no further. Joe and the Turco’s Automotive crew are ready to offer you quality service, a friendly smile and leave you feeling confident in your choice. If your vehicle is in need of maintenance or repair, the shop is open Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. Call 253.851.0500 to schedule an appointment today. Beautiful

By Melissa Kilner, Fashion Blogger at BraezenMae.com and member of Better Gym, Gig Harbor IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN; the time when we reflect on the past year and all of the resolutions that were unsuccessful—failures. One year past and we take a day to recommit ourselves to be better—to do better. We promise that we’re going to drink more water, lose the 20 pounds of baby weight (from 15 years ago), stop telling ourselves that tacos are a part of the four major food groups (just me?) and get to the gym each and every day. We tell ourselves that this year will be the year that we wear the two-piece bathing suit. Because for some reason, that’s so important (insert eye roll), but yes, to some of us, it truly is.

Don’t get me wrong, we should all strive to be healthy. It’s so incredibly important that we take care of our bodies. We only get one for our whole life, and if we’re going to live it to our full potential, we’re going to need it working like a well-oiled machine. But when did that start becoming about being a certain size? When did we stop going to the gym because it makes us feel good and keeps our bodies strong, and are only going because we strive for perfect and unobtainable body types (you know, the photoshopped ones). When will enough be enough? We have become experts at looking at ourselves naked and picking apart every … little

said, plain as day, “Nah. She’s too fat.”

Why is our go-to truth about ourselves that we’re not good enough? … roll. Will any of us ever be able to look at our bodies and not just see all of the years of failed resolutions? When can we look at our reflection and just see an amazing mother, father, an adventurer, a teacher, a hero? Why is our go-to truth about ourselves that we’re not good enough? As children we thought we were awesome. Heck, we wouldn’t wear pants half of the time and we didn’t care what anyone thought about it. And then at some point in our life, that truth—that innocence—changed. For me, I remember that moment like it was yesterday. I was 13. It was a beautiful summer day in the Pacific Northwest with the smell of sunscreen and salt water lingering in the air. I was boating with my family and we had just docked at a music festival. I was wearing a blue gingham-print halter swimsuit (a two piece) with jean shorts. I just hopped off the boat to go check out what was happening onshore (ie. go look for cute boys to flirt with). I was walking down the dock, and lo and behold, two hunky shirtless teenagers were walking toward me (excuse me while I go groom my peacock feathers). I was feeling pretty confident in my little get-up, and just as I was about to strut past them (and believe me, I was strutting), one boy looked me up and down and then turned to his friend and

She’s … too … fat! I could feel the color drain from my face. And just like that, I became fat. I didn’t question him. It didn’t matter that I was a size 7, straight ‘A’ student, that I played musical instruments, danced in performing groups, volunteered in the community. I didn’t even know this boy, and yet for the next 20 years of my life, I let him convince me that not only was I fat, but that was the only thing I was. How silly. I’m convinced that if this stranger knew what an impact he had on my life, he would surely apologize. But this story isn’t about him, or that this is even his fault—it’s not, but he’s still a jerk. It’s about me (well, us really). It’s about how I let a stranger, of all people, dictate my truth. Don’t we all do that, though? Whether it was a mean girlfriend, a crappy parent, a retouched celebrity on a cover of a magazine, a high-school bully from 40 years ago … we let them tell us who we are, or who we should be, instead of merely just being. Here’s the thing, you are beautiful just as you are. Truly, in all of your imperfection, you are beautiful. You offer gifts to the world that no one else can give. So, for this New Year, let’s change it up. Let’s spend the next 365 days being true to ourselves. Let’s treat ourselves with love and kindness (yes, that can include the gym and proper diet, too), and living our lives like the world depends on us and our gifts, because (spoiler alert) it does. XO, Melissa

WHY SHOULD YOU MAKE DENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY? BAD ORAL HYGIENE LEADS TO TOTAL BODY DAMAGE BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS, UPTOWN DENTAL GIG HARBOR

TINA GREW UP IN A FAMILY with five brothers and sisters. Her parents both worked full time but struggled to provide dental treatment for their children. When I met Tina, she had a number of cavities. Her teeth were crowded, making it hard to keep her teeth clean. Tina was in the same cycle of life with her family; prioritizing her finances for her children’s dental care. She realized it was time to take care of herself but wasn’t sure she could afford it! After talking about her options, she decided to join our membership plan for the uninsured. She could prepay for three cleanings/ per year (she had gum disease) and get a courtesy of 15-percent off of her other treatments. We know that finances can be a major concern for parents and the uninsured, as well as for those with insurance. Knowing your options and phasing dentistry out over time can make a tremendous difference for your well-being. Dental health probably has one of the biggest impacts on a person’s self-esteem and confidence in appearance. However, dental health is about much more than cosmetics. Your dental health is equally important to your physical health because it’s directly linked to the rest of your body.

Dental health probably has one of the biggest impacts on a person’s selfesteem and confidence in appearance.

Your circulatory and digestive systems are just two parts of your body that are directly connected to your oral health. Simply put, excellent dental health is not optional. Plaque and bacteria can attack teeth causing decay, cavities, tartar and plaque buildup, and gum disease. But did you know that the same bacteria can enter your bloodstream and attach to your arteries? Plaque can cause even more damage to your circulatory system, as it already has to keep blood flowing and work against other potential buildups of cholesterol and fatty deposits. Similarly, the bacteria that results from gum disease can also enter your bloodstream, infecting your arteries and digestive system. Neglecting to care for your teeth leads to tooth

loss, which causes a diminished ability to eat and speak. Tooth loss also leads to excessive wear on your remaining teeth. Not to mention that all of these can cause pain and discomfort, both physical and emotional. All too often, the focus of dental treatment is limited to the cosmetic benefits for many patients. There’s no escaping the fact that healthy teeth, gums and mouth contribute greatly to one’s overall appearance. It can even boost one’s outlook on life and relationships. Remember, your dental health is tied to the health of your body—your very heart! Never mask negative or painful oral health symptoms. If you experience sensitivity, swelling, bleeding or prolonged halitosis (bad breath)—there’s a more serious issue. We know that periodontal disease (loss of bone around your teeth and gum issues) can shorten a person’s quality of life and also your life span. Is it time to invest in your health? THE COCKTAIL-PARTY PROBLEM: WHY IS IT SO HARD TO HEAR IN BACKGROUND NOISE? BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

THE AUDITORY SYSTEM is complex, like the rest of the human body. Sound waves move through space and are delivered to the brain after a quick journey through the ear canal, middle ear, cochlea and up the auditory branch of the eighth cranial nerve. In a completely healthy system, fidelity to the original signal (the sound) is maintained throughout, and the message can usually be appropriately decoded and acted upon. With damage to any part of the auditory pathway, however, the signal can be altered and the content of the message distorted. The more complex the sound, like speech in the presence of background noise, the more complicated the auditory processing becomes.

noise. We use all of this acoustic information in our attempts to locate and focus on the desired speaker.

The cocktail-party effect is a well-known phenomenon in which a listener is able to (or, perhaps more often, struggles to) focus on a specific speaker in the midst of many people talking. This process relies not only on acoustic information picked up by the ears (“bottomup” processing), but also on memory, attention and other cognitive processes (“top-down” processing).

Top-down processing gets even more complicated, as it relies on the brain. We use memory and attention to select the voice we want to hear, in effect highlighting that voice while dimming others. We use visual cues and our knowledge of language to fill in the gaps where consonants ought to be. The brain must assess and sort the incoming information, extracting meaning and formulating responses.

In talking about bottom-up processing, we must consider the content of the target signal (the speech you want to hear), as well as that of the background noise. In general, background noise causes problems by masking important linguistic cues. Specifically, consonants are much quieter than vowels so are more easily masked by other noise in the environment, such as music or other talkers. Without consonants, language begins to sound a lot more like mush. How much speech is masked by the noise depends on the relative levels of both; generally, the higher the signal to noise ratio (SNR), the better able we are to sort out the message from the mess. There are additional factors, like reverberation and frequency content, which also affect our ability to sort out signal from

As we age, our cognitive processes and sensory inputs change, making use of both bottom-up and top-down processing more challenging. Thankfully, there are approaches we can use to maximize speech understanding in the presence of background noise. In audiology, we talk about good communication strategies for those with and without hearing loss. For those with hearing loss, we also discuss available technology for improving the SNR and restoring some of the acoustic cues that may otherwise be missed.

If you’re struggling to hear in noise, you’re not alone, but it’s probably worth a visit to your audiologist for a hearing test and some good advice.

REFLEXOLOGY, YOUR NERVOUS AND ENDOCRINE SYSTEMS WHAT’S THE CONNECTION? BY DARCIE MILLER, OWNER, LIGHT IN BALANCE REFLEXOLOGY

ALL OF OUR BODY’S systems work in unison to keep us functioning. The nervous and endocrine systems work by coordinating with one another to help regulate body temperature, metabolism, circulation, and electrolyte and pH balance. They are also responsible for growth and reproduction and help to maintain homeostasis or balance in your body. The nervous system sends short and rapid signals, and the endocrine system sends messages via hormones, which have a longer transition, traveling through your circulatory system. It works slower than the nervous system but travels greater distances. Your hormones are carried by blood into your cells where they are then recognized by specific receptors. You could say that your endocrine glands are a control center responsible for managing and sending commands from the body to its cells and onto the central nervous system. The endocrine glands are: Pineal Gland – Often referred to as your ‘third eye’ because it is located between your eyes and consists of cells identical to those of your retina. It is able to inform us of the difference between night and day and is the command center of the endocrine system, which sends direction throughout the body’s systems to adapt to its external environment. Pituitary Gland – Works in conjunction with the hypothalamus and sends hormonal stimulation to the other glands. Hypothalamus – A relay center, which analyses and balances. Controls body temperature, fluid balances and controls the autonomic nervous system.

WORKING IN UNISON

A Holistic approach to improved health

Thyroid and Parathyroid – The thyroid controls our cardiac rhythm and metabolism. It also manages the body’s ability to adapt to changes in the environment and acts as a catalyst between our emotional state and our ability to communicate. The parathyroid helps with the absorption and distribution of calcium and phosphates. Thymus – Produces antibodies when needed and supports the immune system. Pancreas – Produces insulin and glucagon. Liver – Stores fat and is involved in the production of blood cells and also has a role in blood coagulation. It produces bile, which is stored in the gallbladder. Adrenal Glands – Made up of the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla. The adrenal cortex transmits numerous hormones including corticosteroids, which aid in the balance of sodium and potassium. They help with reducing inflammation and also respond to stress, which affects hunger, thirst and changes in temperature. The adrenal medulla is made up of lymphoblast cells and produces the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. These are chemical transmitters for sympathetic neurons, which are part of the sympathetic nervous system. Mammary Glands, Ovaries and Testicles – Mammary glands produce prolactin, the ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone and the testicles produce testosterone as well as small amounts of female hormones. Reflexology can help provide balance and regulation between the nervous and endocrine systems, with gentle application of pressure to the glandular and hormonal reflex points on the feet, hands and ears.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY EATING … WHEN YOU’RE ON THE GO! BY DR. REBECCA TAXIER, PEDIATRICS NORTHWEST, P.S.

IT CAN BE HARD TO FIND time to sit down for family meals, and it can be harder to eat healthy when you’re always on the go. After a long day of school, what child isn’t hungry? January is National Healthy Weight/Healthy Eating Month. These tips can help you choose healthy snacks that add to your child’s nutrition. Include a fruit, vegetable or whole-grain plus a protein This combination of foods is a great way to keep your child feeling full between lunch and dinner. •

Apples and peanut butter

Celery or carrots with hummus

Fruit or berries with yogurt

Cheese and whole-grain crackers

Popcorn - pop your kernels in a brown paper bag to avoid extra additives

Hard-boiled eggs

Avoid extra sugar by drinking water Water is a zero-calorie, no-sugar thirst quencher. Having a reusable water bottle available for each child minimizes the temptation to run into the grocery or convenience store for soda. Even juice or sports drinks, which seem like healthy options, often have as much sugar as soda and contain none of the fiber as eating a whole piece of fruit. Keep a cooler in the car Extend your options for eating on the go by having a cooler with ice packs with you. Yogurt

and cheese are great options if you can keep them cold. Frozen bananas and grapes are also fun and healthy. Variety Make sure that it’s not the same snack every day. Adding variety can mean less complaining and help prevent a detour through the drivethrough for an alternate snack. Get your kids involved in advanced snack planning Healthy snacks aren’t as convenient as many prepackaged snacks and do require thinking and planning in advance. Get your kids involved in helping to choose and prepare healthy foods. Make your own trail mix together and allow them to pick out the combination of dried fruits, nuts and healthy cereals they like best. Dr. Rebecca Taxier is a pediatrician with Pediatrics Northwest, P.S. A healthy food enthusiast, she loves to spend time on her farm, watching the changes each new season brings and cooking with all of the healthy vegetables she grows.

FEATURE STORY

2018 REAL ESTATE OUTLOOK BY COLIN ANDERSON 2008 WAS A HORRIBLE YEAR for the American economy. Large companies were laying off employees by the thousands leading to unemployment rates higher than they had been since the great depression. Places like Las Vegas, Phoenix and Southern Florida watched their housing markets go belly up and building come to a complete standstill. It was truly one of the most difficult economic crises in our

nation’s history. Tax credits and historically low interest rates were offered to right the ship, and though many places never fully recovered, the overall state of the housing market is vastly more stable 10 years later. pre-foreclosure. The hope is that consumer and lender both learned from the experience so as it not to happen again; something only time will tell. Across the nation, and especially in the Northwest, we watched prices and home values soar in 2017, and many want to know if they’ve missed out on affordable housing, when

interest rates will rise or if they should finally put their current home on the market and upgrade. In this outlook, we sought out advice from realtors in both places rural and urban, small and large, in Washington and Idaho. As all markets are different, it is always best to work with a local agent who is most up to date on your community when making the life-altering choice of buying or selling. The following is meant as a general look at market trends, what buyers and sellers are most attracted to and advice from experienced agents. This is not intended as a crystal ball into the future! As of November 2017, the median home value in the United States is at $203,400, a 6-percent increase from this time a year ago, and a massive increase over a low of $151,000 in 2012. Home-buying website Zillow recently polled a group of realtors, economists, lenders and

professors who came to a collective agreement of a more modest 3-percent gain in 2018. As home values and listing prices shot up very quickly due to stability in the job market and interest rates under 4 percent, many sought to get in the action because of the fear of rising interest rates. Since many of those buyers have already settled, there is a persistently low inventory, which makes for a competitive market for those looking to purchase a home. In and around Seattle, homes are often gone within 48 hours of being listed, and most agents across the Northwest are predicting a larger value increase. “The 2017 real estate market was busy, the lack of inventory created multiple offers in many areas,” said Lydia Geline, a Windermere agent who has worked with buyers in both King and Pierce counties. “I see it being the same in 2018

with pricing increasing rapidly because of it.” While the Seattle-area market is seeing an influx of young buyers, retirees are often seeking a smaller community, which has been a recent boom to the market in North Idaho. “New construction and condominium sales in 2017 filled a large need for the retirement market,” said Jackie Suarez of Century 21 in Sandpoint, Idaho. “While the residential median sales price in Bonner County is 9-percent higher this year to date than 2016, the majority of buyers are taking advantage of low interest rates, making sales contingent on appraisals. Appraisers look to the past for comparable sales data, which may not support agreed-upon sales prices. Pricing is important. Inventory is relatively low, and our job as agents is to help sellers realize the highest possible return while keeping in mind buyers are well-informed and not apt to overspend.”

FEATURE STORY Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, has seen a consistent spike in out-of-state residents for much of the past two decades. People from larger communities in California, Colorado, Washington and Oregon are drawn to the small-town feel, relative affordability, outdoor recreation and as a safe place to raise a family.

home improvement shows are usually targeted toward young couples or families with small children who might not have the budget for a custom home but can afford some updates if the bones of the house are in good shape. This style of purchase, however, is not as appealing

“Since mid-2011, home prices in all of North Idaho are up 67 percent and 83 percent since the bottom,” said Raniel Diaz of Professional Realty Services in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This would be our seventh year of beyond healthy growth— an average of 11 percent year over year. The most common question I get on a daily basis is, ‘Are things slowing down?’ Short answer … nope.” What are looking for?

“Many clients are targeting a movein ready, high-quality home with new or updated kitchens and baths, low-maintenance exteriors and easy access. Guest quarters or room for extended family factor in as well,” said Suarez. The same holds true south of Seattle around Tacoma and Gig Harbor, Wa s h i n g t o n , according to Geline. “Home buyers usually want movein ready, remodeled or newly built home. It’s rare to find buyers that want to do any work, unless they can’t find a home in their price range.”

buyers

Each of us is different in our personal tastes, preferences and what is most important in our home. Location, location, location seems to be at the top of everyone’s list, but that, again, is very subjective. One buyer’s dream location is in the heart of the action downtown, another wants peace, serenity and a water view while others seek the comforts of a suburban setting. The so-called fixer-upper effect has helped influence some buyers away from new construction and instead finding an older home for cheaper and bringing it up to date with today’s trends. The myriad of

“Flip homes are becoming harder to come by without the right connections as the normal buyer would rather invest and stay versus invest and profit, which will drive the margin out of a fixer,” said Diaz. Buyers are still looking for open-floor plans, nice kitchens, main-floor master bedrooms and large garages as a general rule of thumb. “

gravitate toward an updated kitchen as being high on the priority list, and while spending $20,000 or more on a kitchen you don’t plan on using for long might sound crazy, it will likely make your home much more appealing to buyers and fetch back a higher return. To buy or to build? This age-old question continues to come up no matter the market condition. Am I better off building exactly what I want from scratch? Or will I find something suitable on the market so I don’t have to wait? According to Geline, a typically new home build in Gig Harbor takes about six to nine months to build or nine to 12 months to build a custom home. “Buyers like the option of picking out the elevation, flooring, cabinets, etc. The drawback to building a home from scratch is you may have to sell your current home to purchase the new one. Timing of this can require the buyer to have to move into a temporary home [until] their new home is complete.” Suarez also sees both pros and cons of building during the current housing market. “You get the floor plan and location you want, customizable for individual needs, and in many cases in the current market, instant equity when you close as overall home prices increase during the construction period. Drawbacks include the current shortage of highly qualified tradespeople in the industry. Many builders are challenged to find additional crews. Permitting with local municipalities is taking longer than expected.” Diaz echoes Suarez’ concerns about the lack of quality labor available in North Idaho and also sees builders being more selective on which projects they choose. “Cost per square foot to build a custom home has increased dramatically, and it’s surprising those who might have built in the past.”

FEATURE STORY Should I keep my current home as a rental? While the housing market is tight, renters are finding a major housing crunch of their own. Across the Inland Northwest, apartment complexes are going up and filling up before they are even completed. In Spokane, the current occupancy rate is above 98 percent, and renters on average are paying nearly one third of their income toward their rent. If you have the means to hold onto your current property and utilize it as either a short- or longterm rental unit, your investment can bring out bigger payouts in the long run, however, there are potential risks you incur as well. Andrew Weed and his wife Lindsey decided to leave their Missoula, Montana home for a year and explore different communities in Oregon and Washington, while Lindsey worked as a traveling physical therapist and Andrew as a lead cameraman for a production company. They rented their home to Andrew’s company for seven months, and, in the previous five, have listed it as a short-term vacation rental. “We found that the people who stayed there for just a day or two didn’t leave the home a mess or create many problems. However, the longer-

term renter didn’t show the same respect to our home,” said Andrew. It’s true you roll the dice with renting your home, but having others pay your mortgage while gaining value in your home is typically one of the most sound investments; just beware of additional costs that go along with it. “We lost almost all of our profit to cleaning fees, having to pay more than $200 each time someone rented. If we could do the fixes and cleaning ourselves, we would have seen much more profit,” said Andrew. While national forecasters believe there will be only small growth in prices for 2018, professionals in the Northwest aren’t seeing too many signs of the market slowing down. One factor that could cause a slow down is the Federal Reserve raising interest rates, which, in all likelihood, will happen at least once if not more in 2018. A rise in rates would likely slow home values down, especially if there’s an uptick in available inventory. Whether it’s a downtown condo, lakefront playground, first home or last home, finding the right one is a difficult process. Work with a local agent that knows your specific market, what you’re looking for, what you can afford, and where you will be most happy.

A home is one of the biggest decisions in our lives and one that should be thoroughly vetted. With a stable economy, now might just be right for you to make the move.

KOOTENAI COUNTY: (RANIEL DIAZ) $250,000- 2017 has been another great year for the North Idaho real estate market. We’ve witnessed median price in Coeur d’Alene from $236k to $260k - a 10-percent increase this year so far! Even better than the gains we saw in 2016. And, the year isn’t even over. We’re not slowing down. With that in mind, what is available for less than the median is quickly diminishing. A home buyer should expect to get a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home in the Post Falls, Rathdrum or more established areas of Coeur d’Alene in the mid-200ks. Rathdrum has nearly caught Post Falls in terms of median price with area expansion moving North. Affordability in the core of Coeur d’Alene is continuing to push people to the outlying areas. $500,000- While $500k used to go a long way, people’s expectations of acreage and quality new homes are quickly being tempered by accelerating price points. The pivot point in North Idaho from “Seller’s Market” to “Buyer’s Market” is happening in the $400k - $500k range. Some factors here include lender limits on conforming loans and a lack of inventory in this price range. Larger scale neighborhoods that are listing newer homes in this price range are few and far between, which is a significant opportunity for builders and sellers in this range. $750,000- Three quarters of a million dollars is a lot of money! The buyer looking at this price point expects near perfection. Sweeping views, lake access, generous square footage, all new finishes, etc. Similar to all price categories, the availability of homes in this range is challenged, and buyers are competing for the same inventory. If one has this much money to spend, there is a growing level of frustration that the “perfect” home doesn’t exist. If waterfront is your thing, expect decent drive times back to downtown as the push to water includes a push to Harrison, Worley and other upcoming areas.

Take Note:

I AM WILLING TO make a wild assumption about everyone reading this article right now. Are you ready? I’m willing to bet that you have a bucket list. While I don’t necessarily know what is on it, I’m willing to bet that I know what isn’t! Weight loss. Reorganizing something. Writing more thank-you notes. You know, the kind of thing that I would usually put on my list of New Year’s resolutions. In reflecting on 2017, I suddenly realized that my list of resolutions looks totally different from my bucket list, and that neither of them had much crossed off from year to year. I still didn’t shed those 10 pounds. I still don’t have an organized garage. I wrote exactly zero thank-you notes (emails don’t count!).

Take a Trip! Who cares if it’s  out of town, or of state or out of country. The destination isn’t as important as the journey. Learn a skill. Have you always  wanted to throw pottery? Paint? What about driving a race car? Defensive driving is always a good idea. Go do it! Experience ... Something! If  we run our days planned to the max and leave no time to just experience and savor, we’ll miss out. Slow down, relax and just experience what’s around you!

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

So how is 2018 going to be different? How can it be more fulfilling for all of us? Maybe instead of concentrating on resolutions for the New Year, it’s time we start concentrating on that list. What’s on yours? If you haven’t thought about it in a while, or maybe it’s only full of pie-in-the-sky type dreams, it could be time to start adding a few new items to the list. Adventure and new experiences, big and small! More travel, less TV, more faces and fewer screens.

74

Here are a few ideas that I’m adding on for 2018: Travel OK, I know this seems broad, but hear me out. Travel doesn’t have to mean visiting Rome or Paris or some exotic locale. It can mean going anywhere, even if it’s just over to the next city. Many cities and states have websites dedicated to adventurers who don’t have the time or the resources to go too far from home, and there are most likely hidden gems all over your home state that you’ve never been to. Maybe there is a national landmark a few miles outside of town you didn’t know was there, or maybe there is a city with some rich history that would teach you something new and entertain you and your family for an afternoon. Of course, if you can make it to Rome or Paris, go for it! Just try to include smaller experiences with the big ones!

Take a Train Ride Did you know that one of the best ways to see the country, and one of the most budget friendly, is to take the train? There are scenic train rides that go along the length of the Pacific Coast in a matter of days and cross-country rides to take that will whisk you away to places you didn’t even know were on the map. Or, if you are more of a city mouse, there are trains that go from one large city to another in a few hours, and you can save your hard-earned cash to spend on shopping and dining experiences in a new city, rather than spending it on plane tickets or gas for the car. All in all, this is a safe, inexpensive and fun way to see the world!

Check it off your list! A  bucket list doesn’t have to be complicated. If we start with the end in mind, all of a sudden you’re packing memories into experiences, and that’s the best place to be!

Make Something Have you ever gone down the rabbit hole of Pinterest and ended up looking at DIY projects to build a wall of bookshelves or a kitchen table, or re-tile your bathroom, and convinced yourself that you don’t have the skills or the tools to do the job? There is much satisfaction to be gained from creating something with your hands, even if you think you’re not any good at it. Many home-improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowe’s offer free classes on DIY home improvement projects, like installing a tile back splash in the kitchen. piece of pottery or art that you can display in your home is easy at one of the many pop-up pottery shops you might find in your town! With a little bit of research and a sense of adventure, you can find the resources you need to complete a project, large or small, that you can be proud of. Tourist Activities I’ll admit it. I drive around the downtown area of my city and I see those people taking personal riding tours and I purse my lips and inwardly think that they look ridiculous—and so would I. I live here; why the heck would I want to be seen in that little helmet zipping around the city on that thing? Then I see the tour group duck into an alley that I never noticed before and disappear around the corner and wonder, “Where are they going? And what is so interesting down there?” The fact is, I have lived in my city all my life and don’t know very much about it. When I go to visit friends in another city, particularly those on one of the coasts, I am awestruck by the beauty and potential for fun, and they are indifferent to it because they see it every day. A challenge I have given myself for 2018 is to re-examine my city through the eyes of a tourist. There are a million ways and types to choose from, all there to teach even residents like me something new and fascinating about the place I have been living my entire life. It makes me feel proud of where I live and excited to learn more about it.

Eat Something New This one might sound simple, but some people are more inclined to go skydiving than they are to try something exotic from another country. Food in many cultures is a way to bridge the gap between generations and connect one country to another. Food can remind us of home or give us some insight into a way of life we aren’t familiar with. It is easy to stay in our comfort zone when it comes to cuisine and never venture far from what you are accustom to. Another challenge for 2018 is to find a person from another country, or a restaurant featuring food you’ve never heard of or tried before, and try an offering. It’s a great way to expand your understanding of the world or make a connection to the past. Of course, maybe all of these ideas don’t sound like what you would find on the traditional “100 Things To Do Before You Die” type list. The way I see it, most of us have so many commitments to our friends, families and jobs that some of those ideas might not be realistic for everyone. That’s why my 2018 will be centered on ways I can expand my understanding of the world, have new experiences and connect with others in new and profound ways. I truly hope you will join me.

It doesn’t matter that you ate 50 pounds of Halloween candy just a few short months ago. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE TODAY?

iT p 1 SO IT’S JANUARY, the first month of a brand new year. The holidays of November and December are past, and it’s time to look forward to new beginnings.

Reach for almonds instead of Ibuprofen - almonds have a large amount of magnesium in them, which is known to help headaches caused by stress. Magnesium also relaxes muscles and lessens nerve volatility.

In my experience, this represents a time of guilt and corresponding penance in regard to the behavior in the months leading up rather than an opportunity for a fresh start. It’s the time to balance out what we feel is “bad” by making an attempt at what is “good.” Interestingly, this mindset is almost always destined for failure. Swinging the pendulum aggressively in the one direction only means that it will eventually swing right back instead of just carrying the momentum forward. Ironically, the five to six weeks of “bad” is almost exactly represented in fitness facilities around the nation by five to six weeks of “good.” For those of you who’ve been in the gym in January, February and March, you’ll recognize the decline that begins mid-February.

Health benefits of Almonds ...

This year, instead of reflecting on perceived transgressions of diet and exercise with remorse and guilt, just recognize that they are neither good, nor are they bad. Those actions just are. Trying to contextualize them in the past doesn’t make sense, and there’s a thousand ways in which “bad” things are actually “good.” (Two pieces of pie for lunch the Sunday after Thanksgiving is significantly better than an entire pie.)

• Heart health • Healthy Brain Function • Skin Health

Those things are in the past, and in truth, you’ll probably follow a similar behavioral pattern next year. It’s OK, and I honestly encourage it with clients. There is but one Thanksgiving and one Christmas throughout the year. Enjoy them and indulge in them, year after year. So accept the recent past, the holidays and their transgressions for what they are and move forward with your head held high and grand dreams of accomplishment on the horizon.

This brings me to my next suggestion for this time of year—resolutions. It’s been tradition to create New Year’s resolutions for the upcoming year for 4,000 years (seriously, look it up). I think this is awesome. It would be convenient to be cynical about this practice since most of us are all too familiar with the commonality of failing at these resolutions. You won’t catch me in that position. I think that setting goals, no matter how grand they are, is fantastic, regardless of outcome. After all, this great country is founded on people reaching high, occasionally succeeding, but more often failing, then getting up and doing it again, over and over. After all, the soul who is capable of daring greatly is better than being one of those timid souls who neither knows victory nor defeat. So you might fail. So what. Get up next year and do it again. But how do you give yourself the best shot at succeeding? How do you ensure that your grand plans have a chance? First, you need to make your goal—or goals—crystal clear. It should be exactly what you want to achieve; not just a rough sketch or a foggy vision, but a precise vision of what will happen for you. Pretend you’re an architect designing a house. Just as you wouldn’t run out to the hardware store, grab a handful of 2x4s and some nails and pray it eventually turned into a house, you are going to have a hard time starting down the path to success without knowing where that path is headed.

You stayed up too late last night? HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE TODAY?

iT p 2 Stick to a Schedule! It helps maintain healthy body weight. Waking up, eating meals and going to bed at the same time each day can help you lose weight, because it allows your body to anticipate the next activity and find the perfect balance. GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Benefits of Yoga Struggling to make it to the gym? Yoga is the solution! Although it’s a slow-paced exercise, you’ll be getting all the benefits you need to get in shape!

From there, it gets kind of easy actually. All you have to do is work backwards. Break it down by month, by week and by day. Establish what that means for your monthly goals, your weekly goals and your daily goals. Focusing on the long-term goal will be too daunting to stick with long term. If your path involved climbing Mount Everest, you’d know that you shouldn’t get frustrated by the fact that you haven’t made the top when you’re sitting in the plane on the ride over. However, if you mapped out exactly how you were going to summit the top, you’d know that you were doing exactly what you needed to do to get there.

Heart Health Lower Blood Pressure

For example, if your goal involves losing 20 pounds by next year, you should realize that number represents less than a half a pound per week (or about an ounce a day). So getting on the scale every day and growing frustrated that you aren’t there yet is going to make life hard for the next year. Inevitably, without planning for this, you’ll get frustrated and quit, thinking how it’s mentally easier to just stay the same than to get better slowly (or seemingly not at all).

Stronger Bones Lower Stress Levels Cardio & Circulatory Health

With that in mind, it’s important to realize that there are going to be fluctuations, ups and downs, and the occasional roadblock that will pop up along the way. This is the way it is. Every overnight success, or seeming rocket ship to victory, actually took a ton of work, mistakes and failures that no one saw. No one is paying attention when things aren’t going well, but that’s when just sticking to the plan and accepting the setbacks as normal is invaluable to your long-term success. Try and recognize that there are things you can control, things you can’t control and things you just shouldn’t worry

about. Giving energy to things you either can’t control or shouldn’t control (remember the holidays), is just robbing you of the energy that will keep you moving forward with momentum. Winning a race is hard to do when you’re looking backward. Focus on the task at hand and stay the course as best you can.

You don’t need to wait until official meal times before you start eating. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and what it tells you.

Lastly, don’t be so hard on yourself. I find that the internal monologue that is nearly constantly running in people’s minds is one of the most negative influences in that person’s life. That really stinks, and it makes everything harder. The voice in your head should be encouraging, not discouraging. Imagine you had a fitness coach who just rode around on your back telling you how poorly you were doing at what you were doing, or how much you failed that day. That would be horrendous, and you’d do everything you could to get rid of that coach. Yet, I find that most people have that going on in their heads at all times. Work on that voice in your head. When you hear something negative, take a deep breath and try and rephrase it in a way that your best friend would say it to you. And try not to beat yourself up for beating yourself up. That’s a long spiral downward. This year and onward, accept the past and anticipate the future, but most importantly, celebrate the journey.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

Whistler, British Columbia MORE THAN JUST WORLD-CLASS SKIING

ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

WHISTLER VILLAGE IS A MODERN UPSCALE RESORT with all the luxury amenities, packaged as an oldfashioned European town with plazas and pedestrian-only thoroughfares. Whistler Blackcomb is consistently rated as one of the top ski destinations in North America. Ski Magazine rated it No. 3 in the 2018 “Best in the West,” a readerranked survey. But there is so much more than skiing at Whistler. Tour museums you would expect in much larger cities, enjoy an eclectic dining scene on a culinary tour, try winter ziplining or relax at a Scandinavian-style spa. Tourism Whistler offers a Visitor Centre in Whistler Village (604.932.3928), as well as an informative website to help you plan your trip at Whistler.com. Skiing – Whistler Blackcomb’s reputation as a top ski destination is well deserved with an average snowfall of 461 inches and one of the longest ski seasons in North America. Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are connected by the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, which is the longest and highest lift in the world. There are more than 200 marked runs accessed by 37 lifts with a capacity of almost 70,000 skiers per hour. Both mountains’ longest run is 7 miles. Combine that with terrain parks, family play areas and 17 mountain restaurants, and there truly is something for everyone. Insider Tip: Make sure to make reservations for the Fresh Tracks Mountain Top Breakfast. This gives you early access to the Whistler Village Gondola and a hearty buffet breakfast at the Roundhouse Lodge. Why get an early start? So you can enjoy the first run of the day with fresh powder or groomed corduroy. This special event is available to only 800 skiers per day. For more information on vacation planning to include lodging, lift tickets, lessons, rentals and activities, visit WhistlerBlackcomb.com or call 888.403.4727. zipline tours during the winter on Ziptrek’s network of ziplines, which are suspended between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains over Fitzsimmons Creek and through oldgrowth temperate rainforest. Ziptrek takes ecotourism and the environment very seriously. Their tours combine the adrenaline of ziplining with an educational component that delivers awareness and appreciation of the natural environment of the area. With the winter air crisp and cool and trees blanketed in snow, it’s a completely different experience as you zip across the creek than taking a warmweather tour. For those who prefer not to zipline, take the TreeTrek Canopy Walk. It is a fun, informative, guided trek across suspension bridges, suspended stairways, boardwalks and trails with breathtaking scenery. You’ll learn about the ecology of the area and may even hear and see the whirl of zipliners overhead as you climb high into the old-growth trees. Ziptrek works hard to ensure the health of the trees used in their tours. Rather than clear-cut a path through the forest, each cable is carefully moved through the branches by hand to help preserve the tree. The company consulted with Dr. Reese Halter, an expert in tree physiology, on the best ways to utilize living trees for the

decks and anchors. The results are structures which vanish into their surroundings without harming the growth of the trees. The company also uses solar panels to harness energy for use on the course. When possible, they try to use environmentally friendly options in the business such as using recycled paper for marketing materials. Insider Tip: Ask to borrow a GoPro from Ziptrek at no charge for use during your tour. To keep your footage, just purchase the SD card for $29.99 CAD. Ziptrek.com or 604.935.0001. Scandinave Spa – As you wind your way from the parking lot on a snow-covered trail with cedar and spruce trees towering above you, there is a sense that this is going to be something special. The Scandinave Spa’s architecture blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Upon entering, a warm lobby welcomes you with a crackling fire and cozy seating areas. Plan to allow at least two hours—or even more—as this is not an experience you want to rush. This is not a beauty spa but one focused on health and wellness. Scandinave offers massages but not beauty treatments. After checking in and changing in the locker room, head outside to begin your hydrotherapy experience. Your experience starts at the top, which overlooks the 20,000-square-foot outdoor day spa, overlooking a mountain vista and surrounded by a scenic forest. The first thing you notice is the silence, which is strictly enforced. The lack of chatter and electronic devices forms an oasis of calm. The spa consists of cycles of hot/cold/relax. The rotations are designed to relax and soothe tired muscles, eliminate toxins and improve circulation. A eucalyptus steam room, a woodburning finish style sauna, a dry sauna and outdoor hot baths are available for the hot cycles. The cold cycles are really cold—as in icy—but are a necessary step in the hydrotherapy process. The bracing cold is pleasantly packaged as a gushing Nordic Waterfall, rain showers and cold pools where guests tend to plunge in and out versus swim. The final stage of each rotation is relaxing.

WHY GET AN EARLY START? SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE FIRST RUN OF THE DAY WITH FRESH POWDER OR GROOMED CORDUROY. THIS SPECIAL EVENT IS AVAILABLE TO ONLY 800 SKIERS PER DAY. GigHarborLivingLocal.com

There are quiet rooms gently warmed with comfy chairs, an outdoor fire pit and a solarium. It is easy to find yourself drifting off. Your body will let you know when it is time to leave.

especially with so many highly rated options. That’s where Whistler Tasting Tours comes in with the option to explore the best restaurants in Whistler with each course at a different dining establishment. In 2012, the company was officially designated a Canadian Signature Experience by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC). The CTC rates these as once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences that show the world what Canada’s tourism brand is all about. Tour options include two different guided dinner tours, a dessert tour and both a guided and self-guided lunch tour option.

Insider Tips: Arrive when the spa opens for the day; it is less crowded than later in the day. Admission includes two towels, but spring the extra money for the robe. It is well worth it and keeps the chill off as you rotate through the outdoor stations. Scandinave.com/en/whistler or 604.935.2424. Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre – This is a must-see venue when visiting Whistler. The Squamish and Lil’wat Nations came together to create this 30,400-square-foot complex to share their living cultures with the world, not the Hollywood stereotypes. The guides are very knowledgeable and share personal accounts of their culture. Guide Travis Billy, his colonial name, and A7xwil, his ancestral name, begins his tour with a song. “It is the dearest song I treasure and was taught to me by my father who would sing it for 20 minutes when he would take me fishing. It is a prayer and represents the beating heart of the animal who gives up his life for us,” he said. It is a very moving experience to observe such a personal narrative. The tour shows how both the Squamish and the Lil’wat tribes lived and examples of clothing, artwork and other cultural information. The centre has a café and a well-stocked gift shop with beautiful offerings of tribal art. SLCC.ca or 866.441.7522.

Insider Tip: The lunch tour is a good value because it includes wine and beer pairings. At dinner, this is an additional cost. Each stop at a restaurant includes a full-size course, and you won’t go hungry. WhistlerTastingTours.com or 604.902.8687. Whistler Village makes a fun winter getaway. The current exchange rate is $1 USD = $1.29 CAD, which gives you almost a 30-percent discount on everything. It is around a five-hour drive from the South Sound area depending on traffic. Crossing the border into Canada is fairly easy with an enhanced Washington State Driver’s License, U.S. Passport or Passport Card. Children under 16 years of age just need a birth certificate with both parents present or a notarized letter from the other parent authorizing travel. Those 16 and older require the same documents as adults.

DELECTABLE PICATTA Courtesy of Chef Dave Adlard, Candle in the Woods. Photo by Lauren Denos. A touch of classic Italian, Picatta can be made with chicken, veal, salmon, even steak. The secret for this (as with most Italian) is in the prep—the scallopini cook so quickly that having everything prepped out and ready is imperative. Mince all of your veggies and botanicals into a fine and elegant mince. The sauce is light and slightly acidic with the lemon and capers, and goes great with pasta, potatoes or risotto.

INGREDIENTS • Protein of your choice • ½ C. flour • salt and pepper • Italian herbs • 2 ¼ C. fresh minced parsley • ¼ C. finely minced onion • 1/3 C. drained non-pareil capers • 2 Tbsp. butter • 1 lemon • 2 Tsp. finely minced garlic • ½ C. dry white wine

METHOD • Trim and pound out your protein (except fish) to scallops 1/4 - 1/3 inch thick. • Create a flour mix with the flour, more salt than you think you need, pepper and ¼ C. fresh parsley and some dried Italian herbs (if desired), then coat your protein and set aside. • Heat oil in sauté pan. • When hot, add protein, “good” side down, and caramelize to golden brown on medium-high to high heat. • Turn over and add onion, capers, remaining parsley and garlic, and sauté briefly. • Deglaze with white wine and reduce to near dry. • Remove protein from pan and set aside. • Remove pan from heat. • Add juice from lemon and butter, and stir until butter is melted. • You can add a small amount of water if needed. • Spoon over protein and serve.

POWERHOUSE PENINSULA YOUTH ORCHESTRA PACKS A POWERFUL PROGRAM By Kellie French

TWENTY YEARS AGO, the Peninsula Youth Orchestra originated out of a need the local schools did not offer—a low-cost orchestra. The program is open to beginner musicians ages 7 to 19 years, and students are instructed in violin, viola, cello and bass. Instruction comes to a low $6 an hour, and the instruments are available for only $35 per season. The program is remarkable in that it allows students to participate who might not normally be able to afford it. “PYO was able to provide for my sisters and I at a much lower price for a time when my dad was without a job,” says Emma, a Peninsula Youth Orchestra music student. Four years ago, Noelle Brambila became the executive director of the nonprofit group shortly after her son had become involved in the program. Brambila feels that community service is a key element of the orchestra and explains how quartets go into local retirement homes and perform. On January 28, they are putting on a free concert at the Peninsula High School Auditorium at 3pm. The orchestra has also recently performed at the Boys and Girls Club, Portland Children’s Museum and the Symphony Tacoma Lobby. Brambila states that students who participate in music have a direct correlation to academic improvement. More importantly, there is a community that grows. “The orchestra has not only taught me to make music but also to play music together,” says Claire, a PYO student of two years. There are four levels in the program conducted by Karla Epperson, Stuart Hake and Matthew Underwood. The heart and soul of the Youth Orchestra can be summed up best in its mission statement: “The Peninsula Youth Orchestra … balances nurture with rigor and compassion with excellence and is open to all.” For more information, visit HarborPYO.org.
