PUBLISHER Get Involved in Our Future THIS PAST MONTH, I watched proudly as my oldest child graduated from college. As a father, I could not have been more proud. My only daughter and the oldest of our three children, she has always been a dedicated student, and in high school a dedicated athlete. She has worked hard for all she has accomplished, and I am confident she will succeed in anything she puts her mind to. But it was not that long ago that a woman in the United States could not even apply for a credit card without the written consent of her husband. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974 gave women the ability to apply for credit on their own. And prior to the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women could be fired from their job due to pregnancy. Over the last four decades, our country has evolved into families where both parents are employed. There are more “stay-at-home dads” than ever before, and single-parent homes are more common than any time in the past. We have also made great strides in equality. We are blessed in our country with incredible opportunities for our younger generation—men and women. They are a generation that is eager to learn, get involved in their communities and make a difference. If you have the opportunity to mentor a young adult, whether it is a son or daughter or simply an acquaintance, I encourage you to get involved. Invite them to job shadow, encourage them and provide them with ideas for opportunities to give back to their community.

“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.”

The younger generation is the future of our country. Help to guide them on their journey, and you, too, will be making an impact in your community.

REINVENTING RETAIL CREATING COMMUNITY DESTINATIONS

RECENT NATIONAL ARTICLES have posed the question, “Are Malls Over?” Think about it. According to the New York Times, approximately one in 10 Americans work in the retail industry. Here in Gig Harbor, our population explodes (practically doubling) every day when workers enter our city to earn a living and provide us with services. The concept of the indoor mall—and the shopping experience in the built environment in general—has been evolving over the past couple of decades. Perhaps it is the online competition that has hit traditional retailers hard. Or it could simply be that consumers are now wanting a greater in-person experience. Whatever it is, developers are now motivated to invest and create new built solutions based on what consumers are craving. What if you had the opportunity to design your own shopping center? Well guess what, you do.

WELL THOUGHT DESIGN

What would you want to experience there? Can the new retail concept encourage physical health, include beautiful landscapes, capture our culture, celebrate our local artists, preserve parts of our history, represent our regional resources and harmoniously fit into its surroundings? What’s unique in this day and age is that the developer is now seeking your advice—asking our community for our input. We have a chance to shape the vision of our growing community through thoughtful conversation. When there are open meetings to talk to developers, don’t hesitate; attend! Imagine these spaces and talk about possible features. What do you want to see, hear, touch, smell, eat and do? Some interesting features to

discuss may include educational or storytelling signage, ways to frame views and keep the local aesthetic, pocket parks, water features, connection to walking trails, covered bike parking and underground parking. What if the buildings were sited to allow for a public center to host events like concerts? Could we create open, covered spaces for local vendors engaging through pop-up shops? What does the future hold for malls? Certainly not more surface parking or the ominous giant grey air-conditioned architectural boxes that appear along highway exits. Goodbye to the stale food courts. Hello to the outdoor eating opportunities! We are getting closer to what well-planned retail centers could be for our communities.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

22

Your input is valuable. Let’s be careful not to fracture our community and the possibilities of tomorrow through distorted information. Public discourse is vital and necessary to shape our city to resemble our values. Only when we truly listen can we collaborate and design for the future. Sustainable development is possible and necessary within the growth management areas. The Growth Management Act (GMA) was adopted in the 1990s and requires fastgrowing counties and cities to manage their population growth through smart comprehensive planning. GMA goals include: concentrate urban growth, reduce sprawl and create regional transportation and affordable housing. This speaks to why it is so important to redevelop the existing infrastructure and develop within the urban growth area. With thoughtful design, shopping could be more than just consuming. When we build with mixed-use sustainable strategies that

affordable adaptable alternative housing

We have a chance to shape the vision of our growing community through thoughtful conversation.

You name it. tiny house, granny suite, backyard cottage, sidekick-in-law, attached or detached, basement apartment, compact design, small footprint housing, love shack, on-grid-off-grid

include the community’s desires and input, we have the potential to bring our community together to share experiences while supporting our local vendors.

We build it.

As James Hoggan says, “Success comes from understanding another’s needs so fully that you can reshape the future together.”

RESUME + LINKEDIN PROFILE = YOUR PERSONAL BRANDING DUO BY KATE WILLIAMSON IT IS NO QUESTION that the Internet has revolutionized the way that people search and apply for jobs. With more than 94 percent of recruiters and HR professionals using LinkedIn daily to find top talent, it is in everyone’s benefit to have an engaging profile to establish a point of view that supports your unique professional identity or brand.

For all your mortgage needs... Call me today!

Nancy LeMessurier Loan Originator, NMLS# 1402740

I’VE MOVED! My new address: 5151 Borgen BLVD Suite 101C Gig Harbor, WA 98332 www.apmortgage.com nancy.lemessurier@apmortgage.com (C) 253-225-3885 (P) 253-649-4059 NMLS 1850 • Branch NMLS 1370632

During LinkedIn’s early days, it was acceptable for your profile to be an exact replica of your resume. In fact, you were even considered cutting-edge just for having a LinkedIn account! Fast forward 14 years later—more than 400 million members and counting— and LinkedIn has become the No. 1 site used daily by recruiters and HR professionals to find qualified candidates. So what does this mean and why should you care? LinkedIn has provided people with an innovative platform to showcase their experience, credibility and value in a way that a resume does not allow. However, many people wrongly assume that your resume and LinkedIn profile are the same. While both marketing tools share branding commonalities, there are three main ways that your resume and LinkedIn profile are differentiated to maximize your brand. 1. Your Headline Resume: Your branded headline can and should be modified to reflect the different roles that you are applying while immediately solidifying your “fit” and expertise in the mind of the reader. LinkedIn: Many people don’t realize that you can create your own unique headline, rather than going for the default option or your current/most recent job title. You are more

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

24

than just your job title—use the extra space to showcase your added value. 2. Tone Resume: For the majority of industries and sectors, a resume has a slightly formal tone. Therefore, you don’t see personal pronouns like I, me, our, etc. First person is implied since it’s your resume. LinkedIn: The tone is casual and humanizing (after all, behind every resume is a person!). With LinkedIn, you get an additional platform to differentiate yourself and speak to your broader audience. Be approachable and write how you talk. 3. Summary Resume: The summary is short and sweet and introduces who you are, what you do and how you do it. This section gives the reader a 360-degree preview of your years of experience, type of leadership that you held, problems you solved and other performancespecific qualities that set you apart from the competition. LinkedIn: With 2,000 characters to work with, you want your summary to do three things: narrate, educate and fascinate. Tell a great story (your story!) that shows who you are and what you’ve done, and inspire people to read, reflect and ultimately connect with you. No LinkedIn profile should be an exact replica of your resume. Take the time to personalize your headline, tone and summary of your LinkedIn profile—you never know what opportunities it could lead to!

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ASK ABOUT RETIREMENT THINK YOU KNOW THE ANSWER? BY CHERI JOHNSON, STRATEGIC WEALTH ADVISORS

AS A FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL, I’ve had the great pleasure of helping area residents with their most challenging financial planning concerns. I’ve heard (and answered) thousands of questions over the years; questions ranging from “Should I buy or lease” to “Should I borrow from my 401(k) to pay for my kids’ schooling?” I’ve found that every single one of the questions I’ve answered can be boiled down to one question—one relatively simple and routine question. Before I share that question with you, I’ll invite you think about something. Think back to what life was like for somebody retiring 25 years ago. Chances are, they had a decent pension. There’s no doubt somebody retiring 25 years ago felt pretty good about the stock market (they hadn’t experienced the downturns like we have over the past two decades). The number of mutual funds available for a retiree at that time was a fraction of what it is today. Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) didn’t exist. The Social Security decision seemed simple—take it at 62—right? Fast forward to today. Financial planning, investing and all of the other decisions facing us today seem much more complicated. There’s not a day that goes by that the media isn’t creating a tug-of-war match with our emotions on how we should feel about the economy or the stock market. Don’t even get me started on social media. We have to face the facts—we live in a society where instant gratification doesn’t come fast enough. (Sit back and ponder that last statement for a second). Take a deep breath. Collect your thoughts for a moment. It’s OK to be alone in thought for a minute, despite everybody and everything vying for our attention. I’ve had the great privilege of helping people

just like you plan for and enjoy a more confident retirement. I’ve done so by helping them slowly and methodically come to grips with the answer to the most important question they can ask about retirement planning. Are you ready for the question? “Will I/we be OK if ______ ?” It’s not rocket science. It’s planning, and at the core of proper planning is this simple, routine and mundane question that I get tremendous joy in helping people answer for themselves. “Will I/we be OK if we want to retire today?” “Will I/we be OK if one of us lives to be 100?” “Will I/we be OK if we decide to both take Social Security at 62?”

Your Life. Your Goals. Our Focus. While developing a personalized financial plan for you, Cheri Johnson Strategic Wealth Advisors LLC will walk you through a step-by-step planning process designed to give you confidence in Your Life decisions. Once your objectives have been established, we will help you customize appropriate strategies to pursue Your Goals. Then we’ll will help you build a financial plan keeping Our Focus on you and utilizing strategic solutions to address: • • • • • •

Tax Management Investment Management Income Strategies Social Security Maximization Estate Conservation Legacy Planning

“Will I/we be OK if one of us dies prematurely?” “Will I/we be OK if we need long-term care services?” “Will I/we be OK if we take X amount of money from our retirement accounts every year? “Will I/we be OK if the stock market goes down 20 percent this year?” There are numerous other permutations of the “Will I be OK if ” question, but it truly is the most important question you can ask yourself with regard to just about everything related to your financial future. It’s the question(s) you want answered, right? It’s the question we’ve enjoyed answering for our clients since we entered the business. PURPOSE, PASSION AND POWER GROWING YOUR VISION

BY DEBORAH OLIVE, BUSINESS/LIFE COACH

BE CLEAR

WE ALL HAVE A PURPOSE. It’s why we do what we do, and when you can answer that question clearly and consistently, you unleash an uncommon power. One of the most important questions you can answer is, “What’s my purpose?” If you’re an entrepreneur or a business owner, the question changes, “What’s the purpose for my company?”

people safe. He took it upon himself not to put any of the workers on his jobs in harm’s way. He planned ahead, mindful to avoid the mistakes that cause accidents. Some took issue with his decisions, but he never wavered. At the end of the day, he wanted every worker to be able to return home safely. His purpose was transparent because he was passionate about it. His co-workers called him, “Mr. Safety,” and it earned him an offer for advancement. I can assure you he didn’t flip a switch and leave his purpose at work. Dad’s purpose inspired his actions at home, on family outings and in the greater community.

In other words, “Why do I do what I do?” or “Why do we do what we do?” Throughout his career, Dad operated various types of heavy machinery to transport equipment and chemicals for an oil company. When you’re clear on your purpose, it changes everything. Your world begins to make more sense. You know why you do what you do. You’re clear on what to say “yes” to and what to say “no” to. Purpose + Passion = Power Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, said, “People say, ‘You have to have passion,’ and it’s true. Because it’s hard, and if you don’t, any rational person would give up.” Your purpose and passion are the invisible forces providing the power to overcome obstacles.

Before he strikes the stack of boards before him, he focuses on delivering as much of the power in his body as possible through his arm and hand, but he doesn’t focus on the boards. In like manner, your purpose and passion focus your power beyond the obstacles standing between you and achieving your goals.

Would you go for it? Your purpose and passion are the invisible forces providing the power to overcome obstacles.

Is there something you want to do, and you’re not getting it done? Is it difficult to prioritize? Has your business plateaued—or maybe it’s been difficult to get traction? Perhaps you’ve lost sight of your purpose. By stepping back from your day-to-day activities to clarify your purpose, you may reignite your passion as countless others have. Clarifying your purpose not only provides the power to get things done, but it frequently taps your creative energy and releases greater joy. LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

A FOOD-CENTRIC EXPERIENCE The Waterfront Farmers Market opening to include ribbon cutting for the Welcome Plaza By Patty Hutchens

WHILE THE WATERFRONT FARMERS MARKET will welcome back many of its vendors who offer fresh, local and delicious food, there will be a new look and feel to the weekly Thursday evening summer event.

“Opening day [of the market] will be a special event that will also include the City of Gig Harbor’s Ribbon Cutting for the new Welcome Plaza,” said Gerling. “Throughout the market season, there will be events such as a chowder cook-off that will feature local chefs. [There will also be] gift basket walks that are similar to cake walks, and the ever-present cherry seed spitting contest.”

With the addition of the Welcome Plaza, the venue will be more conducive to live music and cooking demonstrations. According to Heidi Gerling, market manager of the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, there will be more seating for people to sit and visit, enjoy a market meal or just people watch. “The new Welcome Plaza at Jerisich Dock features two public restrooms, two public family restrooms, showers and other facilities to support the boating community who utilizes the dock,” said Gerling. “This makes the market a great destination via Puget Sound.”

Special events throughout the season will also include First Responders Appreciation Day and Senior Citizens Day. The market’s mission is in part to provide access to fresh, local, sustainable food and food products in an atmosphere that promotes community and economic vitality while supporting the region’s farmers and producers. Visiting the market will not only provide you with an opportunity to enjoy coming together as a community, but to also support our local economy.

Some of the returning vendors include Purdy Organics, Yellow Belly Honey, Smith Brothers Farms, Cazares Farms, Hayton Farms, A Simpler Past Homestead, Harbor WildWatch, Wachtler Winery and more.

The Waterfront Farmers Market is held Thursdays, 3 to 7pm, June through August.

New to the lineup of approximately 35 vendors are Fish Girl, Chef Melinda’s Home Made Granola, B & G BBQ Sauce, ButterFusion and Crimson Cove.

Antoinette’s Home and Garden Design is Gig Harbor’s premier landscape design and consulting firm BY JILLIAN CHANDLER GigHarborLivingLocal.com

GARDENING IS AN ART FORM. It requires a knowledge and passion for plants and flowers, accompanied by an understanding of design and landscape. Here in Gig Harbor, if you’re looking to update your yard and garden, look no further than Antoinette’s Home and Garden Design. Jerry and Toni Gibbs are the couple behind the business. Antoinette’s Home and Garden Design took off in 2017 but was established in 1998 under Antoinette’s Interiors. The home and garden business operates as a landscape design and consulting firm to assist those with interests in gardening and home remodeling. Jerry is the architect on the design and estimating side of the business, while Toni is the color consultant and controls the garden design, assisting with landscape modifications, planting schemes, container designs and staging outdoor garden rooms. “We strive to create unique color combinations and textures in the garden, choosing the best plants for our Northwest soils and weather conditions,” says Toni. “We believe in creating harmony and balance in every project we design. Recycled and repurposed items are included whenever the opportunity presents itself.” What inspires Toni most when it comes to her business is the finished product they have created; seeing the transformation and beauty with every project the pair completes. With

each project undertaking, Toni and Jerry are enthused by all of the possibilities. Both raised in the Northwest, Jerry and Toni have been remodeling homes and creating gardens for their 38 years together. And as a native to the area, Toni knows her plants; both native and foreign. Toni’s gardening skills began when her parents purchased a 20-acre farm in the Olalla Valley. At the young age of 10, Toni began nurturing her first garden; a love and passion which has continued throughout her life. Her parents migrated from Lakewood to Olalla in 1958 and began farming with their four young girls all under the age of 10. Her father owned a painting business and her mother took care of the bookkeeping. Two more children and a move to Gig Harbor came in 1964. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs going back generations both in retail and construction trades, being a business owner is in her blood. Many strive to open their own business, but to make that business successful takes time, dedication and inspiration. “Our success is in having a vision for the end product before the project even begins,” Toni says. “A developed eye for color helps as well as a natural instinct for the details that make a difference.” In 2016, the couple’s garden was honored as Garden Number 3 in the annual Gig Harbor Garden Tour. Toni and Jerry volunteered their

garden to help the community generate money to fund the literacy programs in the local school district and community. “It was the garden tour that really set us on our way to developing the garden design side of our business,” says Toni. With spring underway and summer fast approaching, now is the ideal time to dig in and get that new garden project underway. Jerry and Toni are ready to create the garden space of your dreams.

PUTTING ON THE GIG HARBOR GARDEN TOUR is much akin to staging a huge theatrical production. There are rehearsals, with the host gardeners being the cast, preparing throughout the year, step by step, getting ready for the big opening weekend including tweaking the ‘costumes,’ ‘props’ and ‘scenery’ down to the very last minute. The dedicated volunteers who do all the behind-the-scenes jobs are the staff and crew. They take care of the logistics, the program, the publicity, sponsorships, ticket sales and a myriad of details the public is rarely aware of but are vital for a successful production.

minded gardeners. Their intent is to delight and to educate. The other people working practically year round are the members of the Gig Harbor Garden Tour committee who are the backbone of the organization, and the Association Board, the not-for-profit organization that oversees the whole process. Jan Reeder, retired Gig Harbor High principal, is the current president of the board. The worker bees are the committee members who divide into sub-committees such as advertising and publicity, vendors, ticket sales, logistics, publications, sponsorships, and garden selection. Finally, there’s the ‘seasonal crew’: the volunteers who act as docents and ticket-takers at the gardens during the tour. Some of these people have been volunteering for the entire 20 years of the tour’s existence.

Believe it or not, this annual production really does involve a cast and crew of thousands: hundreds of community volunteers who run the show, and the 1,000 ticket buyers who form the audience. First and foremost are the people who open their gardens. These folks are people who thoroughly enjoy sharing their horticultural accomplishments with other like-

GOOD NEWS For the past 20 years, the tour has found ways to assist our local schools and other educators to find those in need of help with reading skills, be they children or adults.

Discovery Elementary School – Esther Ellickson, Garden Tour chair; David Brooks, principal; Marion Ekberg, Garden Tour Association board member.

Why, you may ask, do all these people come together year after year to celebrate gardening? The answer is: They have a wonderful cause. That cause is the desire to provide a chance for children and adults in our area to experience the power of literacy. Obviously, lack of reading ability is a great hindrance to success in school or in the workplace. For the past 20 years, the tour has found ways to assist our local schools and other educators to find those in need of help with reading skills, be they children or adults. Jan has been president of the board for three years and has a strong interest in education. She says, “It’s wonderful to go to a school and see how our funding has enhanced so many reading programs … and how grateful both the teachers and students are for the extra dollars. A little goes a long way in the public schools!” Mark and Inez Ritchey have been with the tour for the entire 20 years of its existence, acting in various capacities as the tour grew and changed. Mark is still the man who organizes the logistical side of things, making sure that the tour map is correct and the directional signs are all in place early on the first day of the event. He and Inez were originally involved in helping to find gardens, and Inez’s past jobs have been vendor chair and artists-in-the-gardens chair. They both take on a multitude of jobs behind the scenes to keep the show on the road. Kathie Wheeler is one of the newer members of the crew. She began quite by accident when she helped with a gala fundraiser for the tour and eventually segued into being co-chair of the committee along with Esther Ellickson. Currently, Kathie is in charge of publications. She is the person who puts together

the very professional program that each ticket-holder receives. Thanks to all these volunteers, the amount of grant funding distributed between 2011 to the present totals $165,000. Last fall, the Gig Harbor Garden Tour Association awarded literacy grants for a total of $30,500 from proceeds of the 2016 Garden Tour. These newest grantees are area schools including Discovery Elementary School for their Garden Tour Intervention program that provides daily small-group reading for all students; Purdy Elementary School for their parent-student Literacy Night program; Evergreen Elementary School for science books to support a new outdoor environmental program on the school campus; Vaughn Elementary School for equipment to support student-produced behaviorimprovement videos; and Minter Creek Elementary School for materials to implement Third Grade Book Clubs and materials for after-school tutoring programs. Grants were also given to Pierce County Library for their popular Baby Books To-Go bags; Communities in Schools to provide materials for volunteer reading tutors; and Pediatrics Northwest for books to support a program to encourage parents reading to very young children. So when the sun comes up on opening weekend (June 24 and 25 this year), you, the audience, will be aware of all that went on both on stage and behind the scenes to create another spectacular production. Let’s hope you can give the Gig Harbor Garden Tour a well-deserved standing ovation! Bravo/Brava!

Paying it Forward Peninsula Hawks Scholarship Fund gives hope to students

F

or Hayley Nichols, school was her escape. It was the place where she could feel safe and where she knew she would receive nourishment of her body and soul. Now in her early 40s, Nichols said growing up in a family with four sisters and in an unstable environment, she was forced to find her own way at an early age. Her father had been injured and unable to work, her mom worked several jobs to try and make ends meet, and they also received public assistance. And there was alcoholism.

said Nichols, adding that if the employees and clients are happy, it trickles down to a healthy company.

“School became my comfort zone. It was also a place where I knew I would receive a meal,” said Nichols. She enrolled in everything from athletics to leadership activities just so she could prolong the time she spent at school.

She was at her son’s school and heard an announcement about the scholarship applications. It was then she knew she wanted to focus her efforts on supporting students with post high school opportunities.

“I did not have the supportive atmosphere at home that many have,” she said.

She contacted the Peninsula Hawks Scholarship Fund, a group formed in 1984 with the purpose of providing a means for the community to support continuing education by providing graduating seniors with scholarships that meet the donors’ criteria.

As a business owner, Nichols was like many others—donating to several different charities. But by doing that, she was not able to see a tangible result. “I wanted my employees to experience how good it feels to give,” said Nichols.

It was not until she entered high school that she realized her family was poor. There were students from several middle schools that integrated into one high school, and she then realized she was different.

During her first year, she and her employees established a $10,000 scholarship that was divided among three people.

“I graduated in three years, taking both my junior and senior year in one year so that I could move out of the house,” she said.

“It is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” said Nichols of awarding scholarships to high school students. “The appreciation shown by the kids was overwhelming.”

People told her combining two years of school into one had not been done before. “That doesn’t mean it can’t be done,” said Nichols of her response. “When you are in a desperate state, you make things happen. I’m a problem solver. There’s always a solution.”

Today, the Peninsula Hawk Scholarship Fund has more than 80 local donors, and Nichols serves as the chair of the donor committee. As a means to raise funds, The Scholarship Fund also owns the S.A.V.E. Thrift Store (Seahawk Academic and Vocational Education). Located at the bottom of the hill from Peninsula High School, the store has funded more than $50,000 in scholarships each year.

It is that drive, and the assistance she received from the Peninsula Hawks Scholarship Fund, that has carried her through the years. Nine years ago, after graduating from Central Washington University and working with Microsoft as a project manager of various design teams followed by work with a company associated with Microsoft, Nichols began her own company. Allovus is committed to matching creative people with their dream job, and its success is based on the model Nichols said she had used for the 20 years prior to the formation of her company.

Over the course of the last three years, the amount of money Nichols and her employees donate has grown substantially, and this year they will award $37,500 in scholarship money. “I just keep coming up with ideas,” said Nichols of the various scholarships that are awarded.

“Employees are first, clients are second and the company is third,”

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

37

The scholarships to be awarded to the class of 2017 include one Allovus Trailblazers Scholarship, awarded to someone who is “ready to change the world.” The recipient of this scholarship must possess the same traits as Nichols did at that age. They must maintain a high GPA, be involved in school athletics and maintain employment while in high school.

The feedback Nichols has received from the scholarship recipients has been heartwarming. She had one graduate visit her and bring her flowers, sharing with Nichols that the scholarship award allowed the student the opportunity to attend her first choice of schools; something she never thought possible. Last year, the Peninsula Hawk Scholarship Fund awarded close to $300,000 in scholarship money to 177 students. “This is only the tip of the iceberg,” said Nichols. “My goal is to make it so we have double the amount of donors as we have students.”

Five Allovus Leadership Scholarships will be awarded to students who possess leadership qualities. Four Allovus Creativity Scholarships will be awarded to students who show an interest and talent in a creative career. There will be five Allovus Family Scholarship awards given to students who either they or a family member have assisted in the success of Allovus as a company. Finally, there will be five Grow and Go Scholarships that will be awarded to future entrepreneurs.

Although very humble when asked about her years as a child and how she came to own her own successful business, Nichols also is willing to do whatever it takes to help kids succeed. “By sharing my story, I want to give others hope,” said Nichols. “For some of the kids, a scholarship will be the only chance they have to attend college. If you tell kids that you believe in them, sometimes that’s all they need. It just takes one person.”

The Grow and Go program is something that is new this year. “I’m working with the Peninsula School District to help kids fund their own education,” said Nichols. In the Grow and Go program, students present a business plan and are paired with a mentor. They will be awarded $2,000 to help fund their business, which will in turn help the student to fund his or her own college tuition.

“We are trying to help kids early on who are natural entrepreneurs,” said Nichols, who adds that it was not until five years ago that she realized her own entrepreneurial skills.

Passion

Your Life, Your

Former wedding venue now award-winning retirement community BY COLIN ANDERSON

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

40

THERE ARE MANY COUPLES who will reflect on their wedding experience at Kensington Gardens as “fairytale.” They will recall The Manor, the exquisite gardens, the attention to every detail and always the personal attention to the specific style of Kelly and Mark Watson, local owners. When faced with the task of finding a home for Mark’s grandmother that offered the kind of care they desired for her, they realized they could do it better. The Carriage House was added to the estate as an adult family home followed by the conversion of The Manor to accommodate residents seeking personalized care. Recently, the Balcony Suites were designed for sumptuous living for active adults seeking independence and freedom to travel and pursue their interests. When you think of a senior care facility, it’s typically a one-size-fits-all model. This is absolutely not the case at Kensington Gardens. “Our goal is to provide top-notch service, a high level of personalized care and maintain the lifestyle that people are accustomed to, all while living in an upscale environment,” says Mark. Around the beautiful grounds of the estate, the residents, their families and guests enjoy the impeccable and stately gardens where, weather permitting, you might find the residents playing their version of T-ball. There

are fun, stimulating activities arranged on a daily basis, as well as events and celebrations. “We have happy hour with live piano music and singing every Friday at 3pm; residents gather in the living room for a glass of wine or lemonade before dinner. Our staff is involved in the meals and dines alongside our residents. Families are welcome and invited to join in our gatherings as the setting is always family friendly. It’s completely intentional living. We are a family here, a community,” says Kelly. When residents venture out in their luxury 14seat van, they could, for example, be enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, visits to Lemay Car Museum, a performance or concert. With Mark at the wheel, there is apt to be singing and frivolity. The recent purchase of a 45-foot yacht will give residents the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful waters in the South Sound. Being a privately owned retirement community has allowed owners Kelly and Mark the freedom to be highly flexible with regard to the personalized care of their residents. The emphasis is on ensuring their residents have the best day possible–every day. South Sound Magazine named Kensington Gardens winner for Best Assisted Living & Senior Living for 2017 and said, “The

WHAT IS A TYPICAL AMERICAN FAMILY? Today, that is becoming more and more difficult to define. We are a nation of countless religious backgrounds, political ideologies and varying family structures. Some choose an urban life and aim to possess the most luxurious items while others literally unplug their lives and head into the wilderness for a lifestyle free of technology and possessions. Truthfully, however, most of us can be found right in the middle. We want a good job, a safe place to raise a family and the opportunity to enjoy our surroundings. While those who live this lifestyle might not think they have much to offer in the ways of sharing American culture with others, you might be surprised just how big of an impact you can have on a foreign visitor, just by sharing your typical American family lifestyle. Since 1985, CCI Greenheart has been bringing students from all around the globe to

communities all across the U.S. including the South Sound. The company offers year-long or semester-long high school academic programs, summer stays and short-term one- to fourweek hosting. What makes the whole program come together, however, is volunteer families who are willing and ready to bring a teenager into their home and provide them with the same treatment as they would their own child. “Families choose to host because it is a way of bringing the world to their own homes if travel opportunities are limited for them,” said Regional Director Leah Frazier. “The impact on our own children, extended families, schools and neighbors is immeasurable. Sharing our own culture allows us to impact the views and opinions held of the American people. Being a host parent gives us the unique opportunity to better understand other cultures and make a significant impact on a young person in need of our care and mentoring.” Shawna Wise is one of the local mothers to bring an exchange student into her family’s home. They recently hosted Leif, a 16-yearold boy from Germany. “We heard about the exchange opportunity from a friend, and as we dug deeper into the program, we decided that

it sounded like an exciting opportunity for our family and an even bigger opportunity for Leif,” said Wise. “We just couldn’t ignore the fact that this was a chance for us to give to a teenager who had such a big dream of coming to the U.S. The care and support the exchange program gives to the student and the host family during their year here made the transition seamless.” Both Leif and the Wise family were quick to learn about the differences and similarities between American and German cultures. “Most different was that our high school offered competitive sports. Leif ’s school in Germany did not offer team sports—the only available competitive sports were club sports outside of the school. He was thrilled to sign up for everything,” said Wise. “Family life was very similar to what he had in Germany, although he found it odd that 16-year-olds were driving and not many kids rode their bikes everywhere they needed to go. He said all teens in Germany ride their bikes wherever they need to go. No driving until 18 years of age in Germany.” Many exchange students come to the United States speaking English but want to improve their language skills by immersing themselves in our culture. They do this by living in an

FAMILY English-speaking home, attending all-day classes at local high schools, and in some cases by interning with businesses and organizations. Greenheart also encourages its participants to really take in the community by getting involved at the local level. “What sets us apart from other organizations is that we facilitate several State Department Grant Programs and require volunteer service of each exchange student so they can give back to the schools and communities that welcome them,” said Frazier. It’s not uncommon, whether families host for just a few weeks or the 10-month program, for initial relationships to become long-lasting friendships. “We have kept in touch with Leif, and he has been back to visit for a few weeks. We have made a forever connection with him, and he will always be a part of our family,” said Wise.

within the walls of their school, and there are commonalities between teens all over world.” If you aren’t able to get out and travel halfway across the world, consider bringing worldly culture into your own home with an exchange student through Greenheart. Hosting opportunities can last as short as two weeks, and you’ll be making an incredible impact on a young person’s life, whether you think your family is typical or not. For more information on programs available, visit CCI-Exchange.com.

And of course, it’s not just the exchange student who does all of the learning and adapting to a different culture. “Hosting a student is one of the best things we have ever done as a family. It taught our boys, and us, selflessness, patience, cultural understanding and even a few cool German slang words!” said Wise. “It reminded our kids that the world is so much bigger than

What Does Better Look Like? By Michelle O’Brien, Better Gym, Gig Harbor

AS A PERSONAL TRAINER, I CONTINUE TO LEARN more about myself and that, in turn, helps my clients. Certified personal trainers are not always tested in their training skills. In fact, most certifications do not prepare one for practical application. You take a written test, sometimes get practical instruction, but rarely does a certifying body test one’s ability to coach.

progress at the beginning, but my clients have been with me for long periods of time. They have completeed the training in each session, but what quantifiable changes were taking place? Was it increasing their quality of life? Together, we were stagnant. When I was in college, a classmate repeatedly commented that I needed to find my niche in the group exercise world, which I was a large part of. It meant I had to pick one aspect of teaching and run with it. If I had too broad of a base, I would never excel in any discipline. It took eight exhausting years to find my “niche.” But now that I have found it, my life and all my clients’ lives have changed.

My coach of the last few years was the one to pose a life-changing question to me. She asked, “Are your clients progressing?” The fact that I could not answer the question immediately made me reflect on my ability as a personal trainer. People are coming to me for change, and what good am I if I’m not aiding in that change they are paying me for? It’s easy to

Gig Harbor Chiropractic & Massage www.GigHarborWellness.com

What I found isn’t exactly a niche; it’s a training philosophy. Strength is a skill, and the practice of that skill is where true training takes place. My clients need to do more than exercises on machines; they need to be able to react well in their environment outside the gym. They don’t need machines, they need to be machines! They need to be able to do all of the foundational movements that are essential for optimal quality of life. But what does that mean? It means they need to be proficient in the plank, push, pull, hinge, squat, rotate and loaded carry. Movements we need every day. I am a forever athlete, but does that mean I know what I’m doing? Does that mean I can coach or teach people? No. I learned that, as an athlete, I am very coachable. I can take information in and apply it physically. Just because I know how my body responds to verbal, visual and tactile cues, doesn’t mean I can coach people with different strengths, limitations, limb lengths and learning styles. College courses on theories of biomechanical processes and anatomy didn’t teach me to interact with people and analyze what coaching style would be best for them. But I, like almost every trainer I’ve ever met, didn’t know what I didn’t know. I didn’t realize how many micro-adjustments were necessary to help every different body to move correctly

in space before loading them with weight. I thought a good workout was dictated by how exhausted I could make someone; not by how they could progressively get stronger and more mobile long after the novice effect wore off. I heard a really great bit of information just recently. I call it my “a-ha moment.” The difference between a workout and a program is that a workout makes you tired and a program makes you better. I can look at ads for gyms now and see right from wrong. This morning I was looking at an Instagram page of a gym my friend attends and was appalled by how many things were wrong with the page. How many issues I would have never noticed in the past and have now been trained to not only notice, but immediately correct. Doesn’t everyone want a coach who practices what they preach? How could I hound on form and then let you do something unsafe? Or have one of my clients perform a movement they are not conditioned to do? That would be irresponsible. Dr. Stuart McGill has talked about how most people who work with personal trainers end up getting injured by them. What I have learned is that I want to never stop learning and honing my skills. My job used to bore me, and now I look forward to all the things I can do to make my gym families’ lives better.

YOU CAN FIND ANSWERS!

REDISCOVER YOUR SMILE ARE CHRONIC HEADACHES AFFECTING YOUR “LOOK”? BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS

DENTISTRY IS ALL ABOUT creating beautiful smiles, and that artistry doesn’t end with teeth whitening and veneers. Your oral health and your overall health have a big impact on your appearance. Chronic headaches can affect your “look” without you realizing it. Some questions to think about: • Do your headaches make you feel tired or irritable? • Are they affecting the quality of your family life? • Do your headaches cause you to have difficulty focusing at work? There may be a dental component to your headaches. Headaches are usually classified as: Tension headaches – The most common type with feelings of pain and pressure, muscle aches, sleeplessness, and inability to concentrate. Migraines – An estimated 18 to 28 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from migraines. They are characterized by throbbing pain, visual problems, facial numbness, sensitivity to light and sound, and queasiness. Cluster headaches – The least common type, usually suffered by men. Cluster headaches begin as severe pain in one eye, resulting in swelling and watering of the eye. Dental problems are a frequent cause of headaches. Malocclusion—when the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly

Through a thorough dental evaluation and compassionate discussion, your dentist can determine possible dental causes of your headaches and recommend answers. as the mouth closes—causes tension in jaw, facial, neck and shoulder muscles resulting in tension headaches. A history of trauma (falls, car accidents or sports injuries) can also cause bite-related Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) issues. Bruxism (grinding and clenching) applies massive bite pressure to the teeth and jaws at night, stimulating headaches (as well as dental wear and damage). Sleep deprivation caused by sleep apnea and snoring prompt headaches, too. Through a thorough dental evaluation and compassionate discussion, your dentist can determine possible dental causes of your headaches and recommend answers. You may find relief from a comfortable mouth guard worn at night to minimize grinding, or an oral appliance to keep the airway open and alleviate sleep apnea.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

54

Bite correction with modern orthodontia or restorative dental procedures can eliminate headache triggers. Some dentists have a computerized bite analysis that takes the sum of four quick bites and can show where you bite first and how much pressure you put on your teeth. Your back molars should have 10 to 15 percent of your overall bite force. The smaller premolars average 6 to 9 percent of the bite force; your front teeth, 1 to 4 percent. In addition to your bite analysis, your range of motion and a TMJ head and neck exam can reveal if some or all of your headache issues are caused by your dental condition. Consider a dental solution rather than over-the-counter and prescription medications that only treat symptoms and slow you down. If your bite isn’t in balance, you can get massage therapy, chiropractic treatment or physical therapy, but the pain typically returns. You don’t have to suffer from headaches or take a handful of pills to get through the day. Make an appointment with a dentist to find relief from chronic headache pain—and rediscover that beautiful smile!

HEARING LOSS ACCEPTANCE AND TREATMENT BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

CHANCES ARE, AS YOU’RE reading this article, someone you care about is having difficulty hearing. This is not unexpected, as approximately 20 percent of Americans (48 million people) have some degree of hearing loss. As we grow older, which is notably hard to avoid, we are increasingly likely to become part of that group. However, due to a common misperception that only old people have trouble hearing, individuals often have difficulty admitting that they are struggling with hearing loss, sometimes long after it has become obvious to the people closest to them. Delays in seeking treatment can lead to negative impacts on overall health and quality of life. Like most other health-related issues, ignoring hearing loss will not make it go away. By talking openly about the effects it can have on quality of life, and by avoiding disparaging comments or jokes about hearing loss, we can help increase acceptance of hearing loss as normal and encourage our loved ones to seek treatment. It is important to acknowledge that each person will experience hearing loss differently. The ear is responsible for picking up sound, but the brain is responsible for interpreting what is heard. This means that people with hearing loss can perform very differently from one another, and that a comprehensive hearing test and open discussion regarding expectations, goals and difficulties are key to appropriate treatment. The most important factors in successfully treating hearing loss are the individual’s acceptance of their hearing loss and their motivation in seeking treatment, so while it

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

56

is important not to delay treatment, it is also important to first come to terms with the idea of hearing loss and potential use of hearing devices. If you think it may be time to check your hearing (or that of someone you love), consider the questions below. If the answer is “yes” for any of them, it may be time for a visit to a hearing health-care provider. Do you: • often feel like people are mumbling? • frequently need to ask other people to repeat what they have said to you? • have difficulty talking on the phone or listening to the TV or radio? • complain that you hear people, but you don’t understand what they are saying? • have trouble understanding conversation if there is background noise or multiple people talking? • avoid social activities where you know it will be difficult to hear? • have ringing in your ears? • have a history of ear infections? • have a family member with hearing loss? • have any history of exposure to loud noise? Coming to terms with hearing loss is not something that is accomplished in one day or one visit with an audiologist, but is an ongoing process. Be patient, and continue to seek acceptance and appropriate options for managing the difficulties that may arise. Involve friends and family in the conversation, and ask others with hearing loss for their stories. There are many options for treatment, and your hearing health-care professional is available to help you select the best solution for your needs.

WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR HEALTH AND LOWER YOUR RISKS FOR DISEASE COURTESY OF BONNER GENERAL HEALTH

NATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH WEEK is observed each year the week leading up to Father’s Day. This is a good time to look at some of the most common health issues for men in the United States and to identify some of the risk factors, preventative measures and health screenings that can improve men’s health. Heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases and stroke are the leading causes of death in men in the U.S. 65 and older. Some risk factors contributing to these causes of death include: • Diet high in fat, calories, sugar, salt and alcohol • High blood pressure • High cholesterol • Tobacco use—cigarettes and smokeless tobacco • Stress These risk factors can be lowered or managed by: • Eating a healthy diet including a variety of fruits and vegetables containing vitamins and minerals that can help protect against chronic diseases • Regular exercise can help control weight and reduce stress, lowering the risk of heart disease and some cancers • Quitting tobacco has immediate health benefits, including reducing the risk for certain cancers It is important for men to get regular checkups and know their numbers, including their weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as their family health history. Health screenings can find diseases early when they are easier to treat. Getting the right screening test at the right time is one of the most important things a man can do for his health. Men should discuss the following screenings with their healthcare provider at each checkup:

• Skin cancer - the most common cancer in men, self-exams can be done throughout the year; a dermatologist or your healthcare provider can also perform screenings. • Prostate cancer - the second most common cancer in men, screenings can detect prostate cancer before symptoms develop. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best screening for you, a digital rectal exam (DRE) or a PSA. The age you should start screening depends on your risk factors, including family history. • Testicular cancer - testicular exams are recommended at routine physicals. Men at higher risk (a family history or an undescended testicle) should talk with a doctor about additional screening. Some doctors advise regular self-exams. • Colorectal cancer - a colonoscopy is a common test recommended for detecting polyps and colorectal cancer; other screenings are also available. Speak to your healthcare provider about the screening that is best for you. • High blood pressure (hypertension) - know your systolic and diastolic numbers. Controlled blood pressure can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. • Type 2 Diabetes - a fasting blood-sugar test, glucose tolerance test or A1C can screen for Type 2 Diabetes. Now is the time to take control of your health and live life to the fullest. Data included in this article was collected from CDC.gov/features/healthymen and WebMD. com/men/ss/slideshow-screening-tests-men.

GHOST TOWN ROAD TRIP

Washington Gold Rush left behind a string of abandoned communities and broken dreams By Dan Aznoff

history THE KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH that brought an estimated 100,000 prospectors through Seattle on their way north to the Yukon during the last days of the 19th Century left behind scores of dreamers who dug for their own fortunes in the dusty rolling hills of Eastern Washington. Those prospectors and pioneers established a string of communities in the Northeast corner of the state that continue to attract photographers and history buffs in search of legends from our recent past. In many cases, all that is left of what were once thriving communities are a few empty barns and hollow foundations. The eight-hour visit to the Ghost Towns of Okanogan provides all the ingredients a Hollywood screenwriter would need to create an epic journey of adventure and romance. The lonely highways between the eerie collection of abandoned townships and boarded buildings represent an era of unfilled dreams. Unlike the towns that were abandoned when prospectors moved on to other locations in search of precious metals, the valued commodities mined in the Okanogan ranged from gold and silver to sand and timber. The 363-mile loop through the Okanogan Highlands provides visitors with an up-close view of empty, century-old buildings and dozens of historic relics of former towns as well as a first-hand glimpse into the fascinating past of the region and into the history of the state. The northern half—what is now the Colville Indian Reservation—was thrown open for mineral exploration in 1896. Within weeks,

an estimated 1,500 prospectors flooded south from British Columbia and north across the Columbia River to stake their claims. The story goes that signal fires were built when official word of the opening was received. Those fires touched off a short-lived gold rush in Washington state that generated a hot bed of mines and camps filled with dreamers with visions of wealth that could be discovered on the Lower 48. This is the area that would become known as Okanogan County—the mountains, valley and foothills were the home of Native American chiefs from another time in history. Men like Moses, Tonasket, Joseph and Sar-sarp-kin. White men of the early West also made names for themselves in Okanogan County as well. Men like Hiram F. “Okanogan” Smith, Jonathan Bourne Jr., Charles and Hazard Ballard. Others like David McLoughlin, Guy Waring, Colonel Tom Hart, Alex Barron and Chee Saw created the largest and one of the most fascinating counties in the state of Washington; an area is still consumed by legend and filled with mystery. Okanogan is a Salish Indian word meaning “rendezvous.” Sometimes called “the late frontier,” the Okanogan Valley was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before a succession of explorers, prospectors, miners, trappers, cattlemen, settlers, loggers, farmers, missionaries and orchardists carved out a colorful history that lives on to the present day. A visitor only has to use their imagination and wander through long-abandoned town sites

with distinctive names such as Ruby, Bodie, Gold Hill, Barron, Loup Loup, Nighthawk, Toroda, Sheridan, Circle City and Silver to conjure images of the past. There’s much to hold the history buff ’s attention, including legends of hidden gold and long-lost million-dollar mines, several of which are still occupied by treasure hunters today. Several of the area’s historic boomtowns of yesterday are still standing. Other places such as Gilbert, Loomis, Republic, Old Molson, Chesaw, Gold Hill, Nighthawk, Bodie and Riverside are silent monuments to the past that have changed little over the past century. Before beginning your driving trip into the past, it would be a good idea to get an overview of the area and its history with a visit to the Okanogan County Historical Museum at 1410 Second Avenue North in Okanogan; contact them at 509.422.4272. The Society has a vivid collection of photographs and docents who are happy to provide first-person tips for a memorable journey. Bodie There are no road signs to mark the start of the Ghost Town Road Trip, but a logical place to begin would be in Bodie, a collection of barns and empty farm houses 140 miles northwest of Spokane in a pocket of land surrounded by the Colville National Forest. Prospectors Tommy Ryan and Phil Creasor discovered a continuous mineralized ledge in the north of Okanogan County in 1886 and claimed the area as Eureka Gulch. The area

quickly became known as Republic. In the city’s rapid heyday, Republic boasted seven hotels, 20 saloons, nine general stores and an undisclosed number of brothels. The quality of ore discovered spurred the establishment of many nearby mines and townships, including Bodie. The town was established in 1888 at the mouth of Bodie Creek, two years after Ryan and Creasor’s lucrative discovery. High-quality ore was extracted, milled and processed right in Bodie until 1934 when falling gold prices closed the township’s mine and the busy grouping of buildings fell vacant. In the days and years that followed the discovery of gold surrounding the town, Bodie was actually relocated to what was known originally as the Bodie Mining Camp. An estimated $1.2 million in gold was processed through the camp. Visitors say that Bodie Creek still runs the color of the precious metal.

Bodie continues to attract historians, mining buffs and photographers to the slanting buildings, rusty equipment and mysterious log cabins. There is only one intact structure remaining of the original “Old Bodie.” It is a small two-story house converted into a storage building with the help of local resident Doug Prichard. The largest, most visible structure still vertical in what is Bodie today is often cited as a schoolhouse which doubled as a saloon, but local legend disputes that fact. Old Bodie has often been confused with an assembly of cabins north of the Bodie Mining Camp at the junction of Toroda Creek and the road to Curlew, which functioned as a saw mill. Chesaw As long as you’re in the area, it pays to swing by the community of Chesaw, about 15 miles west of Bodie. This ghost town was alive from only 1896 until 1900, but the area is still filled with old buildings and forgotten cabins.

Sherman South of Bodie are the remnants of the sleepy town of Sherman (no relation to the player of the same name in the Legion of Boom the Seahawks) in Lincoln County, just north of Wilbur. Like many small towns in Eastern Washington, Sherman sprang up in the agricultural boom of the 1880s and 1890s, spawned by the federal government’s many homesteading acts. Sherman was abandoned as the price of wheat fell, the average farm size increased and better vehicles and roads made traveling easier. The shell of a school, a beautiful church and a cemetery are all that remain. Govan The next stop on your road trip through Washington history should be Govan, established in 1889 as “a place in Lincoln County” by politicians at the time.

The discovery of a large sandbank in the autumn of 1890 created a boomtown atmosphere that attracted work crews with steam shovels to extract the sand for road construction. The town was named in honor of R.B. Govan, a construction engineer employed by the Central Washington Railway. The town has a mysterious past based on several unsolved murders that date back to 1902. According to legend, “The most brutal crime ever committed in the county took place when Judge J.A. Lewis and his wife, Penelope, were the unwilling victims of an axe murder.” It is believed that the motive for the double homicide was robbery because Lewis was known for keeping large sums of cash in his home. The demise of the community happened virtually overnight when the town was bypassed during the construction of US Route 2 in 1933. The last store in Govan closed its doors in 1940. There isn’t much left in town, but it is still possible to walk around the old abandoned schoolhouse, as well as the original post office and a few other crumbling structures. Visitors can still find remnants of old pottery in the deserted buildings, but explorers should keep an eye out for the rattlesnakes, scorpions and cougars that have become the primary residents of the town. Summer is probably the best time to visit Govan due to the deep mud created by the spring rains. “Lots of mud,” according to one historian. “Watch out for ticks and monster mosquitoes the size of dimes. We were attacked within seconds as we approached.”

Dyer Before looping back, be sure stop off in the old town of Dyer. This former community in Douglas County has been empty for years, but it’s still home to several deserted homesteads, old pottery and other relics. Molson Not far from the Canadian border is the boom-and-bust town of Molson. The city’s first growth can be traced back as far back as 1900. In only a year, the population shot up to 300 and was complete with a newspaper, stores, attorney, doctor, saloon and even a hotel. A post office was opened on July 14, 1900, with Walter F. Schuyler as first postmaster. (The post office closed in 1967.) The prosperity did not last long. The population fell to only 12 people when the mine began to fail in 1901. The community boomed again in 1905 when news came around that a railroad would be routed through the area. In the meantime, a local who ran a barn and stage line filed for a homestead that included most of the town. By 1909, the man published a notice for everyone on the land to relocate, forcing citizens to found the site of New Molson about a half mile north. The empty town is now preserved as an “openair museum” with pioneer buildings (including an old schoolhouse), farm machinery and other vintage artifacts. Nighthawk The logical endpoint to the ghost town road trip is a stop in Nighthawk on the Similkameen River. Named for the now-closed mine, Nighthawk was originally a productive logging

area along Loomis-Oroville Highway westnorthwest of Oroville. The town has survived as a daylight CanadaU.S. border crossing along the Burlington Northern Railroad. The border crossing is commonly known as “the Nighthawk Crossing” on the Canadian side, though the official name of the Canadian-side locality is Chopaka. The town of Nighthawk was a booming mine town at the turn of the century with hotels and a burlesque house. The population is currently less than 10 permanent residents. Situated by the Similkameen River, Nighthawk got its cool name from a nearby mine that is now closed. In the early 1900s, it had been a booming town with hotels, a saloon and even a railroad depot. But as with a lot of the towns in the Okanogan area, the mines were eventually shut down due to the high cost of operation and the drop in the price of precious metals. Several of the structures that remain date back as far as 1903. The ghost town road trip through the Okanogan may not be as famous as Apache Junction or the OK Corral in the Southwest, but it can be a memorable day of exploration and education right in your own backyard. And just like the current residents of the Evergreen State, the ghosts that inhabit the deserted towns in Eastern Washington are friendly. HOW YOU CAN START LIVING GREEN BY COLIN ANDERSON

The amount of ‘green’ products available to today’s consumer is staggering compared to just 10 years ago. Specialty stores, as well as big-box stores, are offering soaps, shampoos and everyday cleaners free of harsh chemicals and dyes, utilizing the cleaning power of natural ingredients. Look for napkins and paper plates made from postconsumer materials, and bring your own bag to the store instead of using paper or plastic. Supporting vendors whose products are produced locally helps cut down on emissions, as these products travel a very short distance compared to internationally shipped goods.

The timber industry remains vital to our everyday life, and much has changed since the clear-cutting days of old. For every tree harvested, foresters now plant four to five in its place. You can do the same by planting a tree at home. Trees are nature’s best at extracting carbon dioxide from the air, and the more that are around, the cleaner the air. Look for annual tree-planting events in your community as you aren’t just assisting in improving air quality but adding beauty to your town as well.

People across the country are limiting time in the car by cutting down on trips, carpooling and utilizing ride-sharing programs, but if you still need a daily commuter, consider today’s more powerful and comfortable hybrid models. Long known for superior fuel efficiency, newer models are also featuring the latest technology and are much more comfortable than their predecessors. For those looking for luxury, the BMW 740e X-Drive iPerformance cranks out 322-horsepower engine but remarkably manages 64mpg on the highway. Most standard-model hybrids get between 50 to 60mpg, which would allow most current drivers to cut their fuel bill in half.

At one time, people just thought of cans and newspapers when it came to recycling, but as technology improves, so does the amount of items we can recycle. In most communities, gone are the days of having to sort, as this is now done at the recycling facility. Before tossing out that yogurt cup, milk jug or shoe box, check to see if it has the three-arrow reduce, reuse, recycle logo on it. If it does, make sure it goes in the right bin. If a lot of suds or soda is consumed in your home, start collecting cans, and after a year you might have very well collected enough to go out for a nice dinner.

Whether building a new home or remodeling part of your current home, there are many ways to make your residence green friendly. When shopping for appliances, make sure to look for the energystar rating, as those with the highest ratings utilize the least amount of energy to operate. Remodeling or redecorating with recycled or reclaimed wood is a major trend in home design. Green homebuilders are becoming keener at repurposing storm water, utilizing longlasting materials, capturing more natural light and installing low-flow toilets and showerheads in order to use less water.

Skip trips to the store, save money and enjoy bettertasting produce by creating your own garden space. Simply frame up the size of garden you want, add high-quality soil, and plant your favorite herbs and veggies. Composting your leftover vegetables and mixing that compost with your soil will also do wonders for your garden. “Compost adds organic material back into your soil, which is full of microbes, which make the nutrients in the soil available to the plants,” said Katie Bach of Cascade Compost. “Compost is a slow release of nutrients to your soil, which is better for your plants than quick-hit synthetic fertilizers.”

The upfront cost of adding solar panels to your home is significant, but if you plan on staying in your home long term, the savings over time will be incredible. According to EnergySage.com, the average energy savings over a 20-year period for Seattle residents with a solar system is more than $39,000! There are huge tax incentives for going solar, and in some cases, if your system produces enough energy, the local power company will actually buy the surplus power from you, gaining you income. The best part is your home is powered by nothing more that the sun, and you can kiss that monthly utility bill goodbye.

Discover ways to reduce use of natural and personal resources By Patty Hutchens

W

hile sustainable living has been a lifestyle that some have practiced for a number of years, the aspiration to reduce one’s use of natural and personal resources is increasing in popularity each day. Brett Marlo, owner of Brett Marlo Design Build in Gig Harbor, Washington, has witnessed firsthand how the desire to live a more sustainable life has been driven by not only saving natural resources, but to save money as well.

“People in general are initially more motivated by cost savings than by saving the planet,” said Marlo. “However, I do believe that most homeowners want to be educated consumers and align themselves with good products from good companies. Even more so, we are seeing many people turn to healthy products due to sensitivities, allergies and respiratory issues in their indoor environments.” Barbara Schriber, who along with her husband Scott, owns Selle Valley Construction in Sandpoint, Idaho, said she also has clients who are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about green building practices. “Many clients want to discuss energy efficiency as an overall general idea,” said Schriber, citing LED lighting and energy-efficient thermostats as being some of the more popular trends. “Many of our clients are concerned with insulation and different building methods used to achieve a tight building envelope while maintaining good indoor air quality. Five years ago, we would educate our clients about Heat Recovery Ventilators, but now many come to us with that information. Many are also concerned about quality windows.” While in the past the desire for building a green home may have been driven by environmental factors, Schriber’s opinion is that is no longer the case.

“I think the media, from Facebook ads to television shows, has made consumers more familiar with energy-efficient principles and products, as have utility companies,” said Schriber. Marlo said that if one desires to build green, some of the easiest ways to incorporate this include low-flow plumbing fixtures, LED light fixtures, low VOC paints, and efficient heating and ventilation systems. “Most people are looking for efficiencies to lower their monthly operating costs,” said Marlo. “They understand that the upfront costs to these products and systems pay for themselves and cost way less in the long run.” And it is not just the way in which homes are being built that is changing; it is the size of homes as well. “As trends go, the pendulum has swung from McMansions to tiny houses. It is my prediction, and hope, that the pendulum will find itself settling at small footprint homes,” said Marlo. “To be truly sustainable, a green building will multitask. It will not only contain innovative technology and efficient systems that work together, it will also be accessible and effective in less space and achieve this with comfort and beauty. We take care of what we find beautiful, love and respect.” Marlo advises that when acting as your own

general contractor and choosing your own subcontractors, choose wisely; it really depends on what you are seeking. Those looking to innovate with current green building strategies are often in search of the latest and greatest products. In these cases, there is a learning curve with all parties involved from specifying, purchasing and installing through operation and maintenance. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, find a local green building group to chat up and educate yourself. “The key to a truly green building is having a thoroughly thought-out plan. A healthy building is much like a healthy body. Your body is a whole system that performs at its best when all organs are maintaining their functions and fulfilling their roles within the bigger system,” said Marlo. “When designing your building, if you look at bettering only one system, you are missing the big picture of how building systems work together so that the building as a whole will perform at its best.” Schriber’s experience is that subcontractors are well versed in green building techniques, especially electricians, plumbers and HVAC contractors. “Much of this is code driven, and these three industries are state regulated, and subcontractors are required to take continuing education that addresses resource efficiency,” said Schriber. One question that often comes up is the cost of building a green home.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

80

“When looking at first costs and the availability of healthy products, our industry has seen great leaps, and yet there is much more to do. The most prevalent products cost close to the same as their less-healthy options, such as paint, tile and countertops,” said Marlo, adding that healthy products such as cabinets, windows and millwork can really add on costs due to the lack of merchants making and selling these options. “Just remember, you have increased your budget for higher quality products with less operating and maintenance costs when you have maximized the use of a smaller footprint design.” Schriber said that it is not necessarily cost prohibitive to build green. “Five years ago, it was more difficult to source green materials; now they are more of a standard. Many states have encouraged energy and water efficiency requirements, and the national building codes have started to require more efficiency. With these changes, the industry has started to design and offer a wide range of green products.” When making a decision on what green products to use, remember that it is not all about saving money now, but it is an investment in that which you cannot place a value. “Building green is an investment in your own health. Sick houses make for sick people. Hopefully, we value ourselves as much as our real estate,” said Marlo.

How to be Less Wasteful By Colin Anderson The phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” was one of the first big movements across the country aimed at limiting waste. Americans were encouraged to reduce how much they use, re-purpose items before being trashed, and recycle cans, bottles and newspapers so they don’t end up in the landfill. While still going strong, a new phrase and concept has been creeping into our everyday vocabulary—Going Green. The green movement not only promotes the three Rs but also encourages people to use their vehicles less and manpower more, utilize eco-friendly products and building materials, and limit the environmental impact we make on the planet. Changing up a routine can take some time, but a few simple changes in your daily life can help you go green without a complete overhaul in your way of life.

Conserve Water

Support Locally Owned Business

With much talked about drought conditions in California and low levels in the Colorado River, water conservation is becoming a much more serious topic. One of the biggest culprits of water waste is the American lawn and keeping it green. If you do water your lawn, do so in the early morning or evenings, as watering in the heat of the day will lead to evaporation before the water can do its job and actually hurts your lawn. When washing dishes, fill the sink and scrub all at once instead of leaving the faucet running the entire time. The same goes while brushing your teeth or washing your face at night. Install a low-flow showerhead in your shower. Standard showerheads go through 2.5 gallons of water per minute. Low flow is classified as 2 gallons per minute or less. During a six-minute shower, this saves 3 gallons of water per shower, which adds up to an incredible amount of water saved each year.

Fruit and vegetables grown at the farms and orchards surrounding your community travel only a short distance compared to produce which is often shipped by vessel, plane or train from far away. This helps reduce the number of extra trips and reduces emissions. An added benefit is that food picked fresh almost always tastes better. The same goes for goods made by your local artisans. Handcrafted art and decorations are made using local products and seasonings are made using local ingredients. Local businesses are also far more likely to support local schools, fundraisers, non-profits, youth sports and other causes.

These are just a few of the ways to help reduce your impact on the environment. Riding your bike to work one day a week or getting all your errands done in one trip reduces the time your vehicle is emitting exhaust. Shopping at farmers markets not only provides healthy, fresh and natural foods for your family, but helps maintain and stimulate the local economy as your hard-earned dollars will stay in the community. You don’t have to live in a tent, utilize an outhouse or only use your feet as transportation to be part of the green movement. If everyone does something subtle to reduce their impact, the effects will be massive. Before throwing out that next item, think if there’s something else it might be used for, and help make the world a greener place one decision at a time.

RAVEL VIA MASSIVE CRUISE SHIP is an ideal vacation for a good portion of travelers, especially those who don’t enjoy extensive planning when it comes to their vacation. With nearly all cruises, your accommodations, food, entertainment and itinerary are all taken care of for you, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the trip. Ships offer huge pools and waterslides, athletic courts, casinos, dozens of bars, cafes, buffets and kid zones. They dock in popular ports and offer prearranged shore excursions that make sure you get back to the boat on time before heading to the next stop. One of the drawbacks to such a trip however is sharing your vacation with so many other people. Most ships accommodate 2,000 to 3,000 guests, with some of the bigger ships in the fleet taking on 4,000 or more. This doesn’t include an army of staff as well, often up to 1,000 personnel. From the Northwest, a roundtrip flight to New Orleans, Orlando or Miami typically isn’t the easiest, fastest or cheapest either. For those wanting a more laid-back cruise, free of chaos, a trip up and down one of the West’s most iconic rivers is an amazing way to see many beautiful areas. “A more relaxed atmosphere on the river allows the passengers more opportunities to explore the destinations and immerse themselves in the history of the region they are visiting,” explained Tony DeMarco, a franchise owner and vacation specialist with Cruise Planners and based out of Gig Harbor. “With a smaller passenger list, the location they arrive at does not feel overwhelmed by people, which is sometimes the case with large cruise ships.” Instead of sharing your vacation with several thousand other guests, riverboat cruises often accommodate less than 200 people with some having space for only about 50. Passengers enjoy all the same comforts of larger scale vessels, just on a much smaller level. Another big complaint for travelers on larger vessels is the miniscule and often stale looking staterooms. Cabins are often a bit more spacious and unique on river cruises, and you’re far more likely to receive a room with an outside view than if you go the budget route via larger ship. “With all the comforts of a fine hotel, your stateroom has an ever-changing view of the scenery passing by. Most rooms come with a private balcony,” said DeMarco. Unlike ocean cruises where much of the trip is spent staring into vast empty ocean, the scenery on a river cruise is always present and constantly changing as you make your way inland. Ships are designed with this in mind to give guests multiple areas to relax and watch the landscape go by. DeMarco added: “There are spacious public areas and lounges for socializing, making new friends or enjoying a cocktail before dinner. Ships have many outside viewing positions to take in the natural beauty of the area, which is great for the photography enthusiast.”

As with traditional cruises, meals are all included, and dinner is typically open seating so you can dine where and when you like. Most trips also offer complimentary beer and wine with both lunch and dinner. Being inland, cooks also have access to fresh foods that you wouldn’t find on a larger ship. “The cuisine is prepared by highly trained chefs who source the freshest ingredients locally from the locations the ships visit,” said DeMarco. While river cruising does allow children, most parents choose a different route as these ships don’t offer the same level of child entertainment. This tends to offer a more relaxed environment on board and is ideal for those seeking a more peaceful cruising experience. This isn’t to say these trips are for retired couples only, as younger couples are getting on board as well. “We have seen huge growth in the multi-generational segment, and cruising provides a great way for families to travel together. Everyone can share time on board, but you still have your private space when needed,” explained DeMarco. The Columbia River is one of the most wellknown in the West, and it’s where you will find all sorts of intriguing itineraries. There are three main lines that service the area: UnCruise Adventures, American Queen Steamboat Company and American Cruise Lines. Each company offers different cruise lengths, and below are just a couple examples of what a local river cruise entails. UNCRUISE ADVENTURES Rivers of Wine – Seven nights aboard the SS Legacy This cruise is all about exploring Oregon and Washington wine country. The ship employs a sommelier and an additional guest wine expert to accompany guests on the trip. Tastings at some of the finest wineries are set up at stops within the Columbia Gorge, Walla Walla, Red Mountain, Columbia Valley and Willamette Valleys. Guests also get to explore both Multnomah and Palouse falls as well as the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area. Your ship, the SS Legacy, is modeled after a turn-of-the-century coastal steamer but with modern convenience of flat-screen TVs, air conditioning and private baths mixed in with industrial-age décor. With just 44 cabins, you will find plenty of space to stretch out and an

attentive staff. Dinner is open seating, and there is a main lounge as well as a saloon on board serving beer, wine and cocktails. There are two hot tubs, fitness equipment, yoga classes and a massage suite for relaxing.

PEACEFUL AND SCENIC Unlike ocean cruises where much of the trip is spent staring into vast empty ocean, the scenery on a river cruise is always present and constantly changing as you make your way inland. Ships are designed with this in mind to give guests multiple areas to relax and watch the landscape go by.

AMERICAN QUEEN STEAMBOAT COMPANY Portland to Clarkston – Eight nights aboard the American Empress The American Empress is the largest overnight riverboat west of the Mississippi, and its iconic red paddlewheel will at first glance transport you back in time. Guests are pampered in this luxurious ship where the dress code is considered country-club casual with no formalwear necessary. This trip is designed to follow in the footsteps of famous explorers Lewis and Clark. Stops include Astoria, The Dalles, Stevenson, Tri-Cities and Clarkson. This trip can be booked from Clarkston to Portland as well for those wanting to end their trip on the coast. Shore excursions are included at each stop and feature museums and historical sites, state parks and downtown shopping. Each day on board, the riverlorian gives a daily lecture about the area in which the ship is passing, and each night guests are treated to Broadway-style entertainment in the Show Lounge or piano and single performances in the Paddlewheel Lounge. AMERICAN CRUISE LINE Highlights of the Columbia – Four nights aboard the Queen of the West or American Pride For those wanting a shorter trip and more time on the water, this trip is a great option. From Portland, guests travel to Astoria, Mount St. Helens and Multnomah Falls before heading back to the Rose City. Much of this trip is spent navigating the Columbia River Gorge with ample opportunity for photography. Both ships were recently upgraded and feature some of the largest staterooms available. Nightly music and cocktails, as well as dinner featuring fresh local ingredients, make this a memorable trip if only for a few days. If peace, relaxation and taking in the sights are top priorities for your next vacation, consider a cruise along the Columbia. There are trips for all tastes, and no matter what you choose you will be well taken care of and come home with a whole new crop of memories to share.

DELIGHT YOUR PALATE! Wine & Food Festival taking place July 29 By Patty Hutchens Photos courtesy of Josh Sherwin & The Wine and Food Festival

THE EVER-POPULAR WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL is just around the corner, and organizers are enthusiastic about what this year’s event has to offer. “Something that is very special about this year’s event is what is taking place on the main stage in the chefs’ tent,” said Josh Sherwin, the special projects coordinator for the Downtown Waterfront Alliance. “I refer to it as having ‘plenty of cooks in the kitchen.’ This aspect of the festival is really special this year.” Eight of the best chefs in the Pacific Northwest will be involved in a two “mystery ingredient” cook-off competition. The Chef in the Hat, Thierry Rautureau from the Seattle Kitchen Show, will moderate the competitions. Chef/owner of Luc and Loulay Kitchen & Bar in Seattle (the Seattle Met Restaurant of the Year 2014), his culinary knowledge, combined with his enjoyable sense of humor, will make for an entertaining afternoon. If you are a foodie who loves cooking, wants to learn about food or just be entertained, this will be the place to be! A celebration of our region’s wine, spirits, brews and food, The Wine & Food Festival, which is co-sponsored by the Downtown Waterfront Alliance and the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor, will take place Saturday, July 29, noon to 4:30pm at the Harbor History Museum. Enjoy sampling the best of more than 50 regional restaurants, food purveyors, wineries, breweries and craft distilleries. With your ticket purchase, you will also receive a commemorative wine glass, carrying bag, tasting plate, wine opener, event program that includes a map and 15 sip tickets. And if you find something you cannot live without, there is an onsite retail store where you can purchase the featured wine, brews and spirits. In addition to sampling, there will also be a variety of wine seminars and food demonstrations put on by food and wine experts. Tickets are $80, and you must be 21 or older to attend. All proceeds will go to benefit local projects. For more information, visit HarborWineAndFoodFest.com.
