HOME & ESSENTIALS

Before You Marry MELD AND MERGE A PERFECTLY ACCESSORIZED HOME

SOME BRIDES-TO-BE might find it hard to think beyond the intense planning that a wedding requires. But beyond the pomp and circumstance of the big day, it’s important to think ahead to mergers – not the corporate kind, but the merging of styles and décor to set up a home the bride and groom will both love. Forget Mars and Venus. Men are from the planet of mismatched furniture and floor coverings, while women accessorize their home with as much care and finesse as they do their wardrobes. Ideally, decorating a first home together begins with the furniture and accessories near and dear to both the bride and groom. But if a bride-to-be can’t live with her fiancé’s 1970s thrift store coffee table and orange bean bag chair, chances are he won’t be thrilled with her antique oak hope chest and ornately carved sleigh bed. Can these two conflicting schemes co-exist after the couple has crossed the threshold? Here are some tips to finding harmony when decorating your home together. • Setting the tone. Choose a color scheme together and creatively arrange furniture and accessories around it. Find a neutral ground to meld his love of earth tones, for example, with her love of soft fabrics. A mélange of colors and fabrics – on everything from comforters to window valances – will inspire looks ideal for both Mr. and Mrs. • Splish, splash. Create an understated, clean look in the bath for him, but add

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

16

accessories with a dash of color to satisfy a bride-to-be’s lively outlook. Bold shower curtains, wastebaskets and vanity items inject freshness and personality. • Boudoir basics. Usher in a new home with a fresh set of bedding; couples can look for a variety of styles and colors designed to be dressed up or left as is for a classic look. Decorative pillows, shams, coverlets and throws complete the look and are a great way for wedding guests to add to the couple’s cozy love nest. • Staples of style. If he loves a more modern style, but she wants a retro feel, furniture options in leather, fine fabrics, hardwood and wicker can readily mesh both personalities. • Merging moods. She’s a homebody; he likes beaches and picnics. For bedrooms and living rooms, couples can combine sensibilities with bedding and furniture lines that bring the outside in, and vice versa. Try mixing a table from one line with a chair from another – mixing it up is a playful way to punch up the personality of a room. Just like in the corporate world, mergers can either run smoothly or be a headache. By considering the sensibilities the bride and groom share – rather than just the differences – creating a first home together can be one merger full of fringe benefits.

Beyond Conventional Wisdom BUILD MOMENTUM IN ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE BY DEBORAH OLIVE

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM promotes step-by-step growth, so incremental growth is still the norm. Nevertheless, more people are improving performance in explosive bursts that accelerate results exponentially. Unprecedented breakthroughs are occurring in business, sports, parenting, medicine, education and so much more. What does this mean? For starters, you don’t have to settle for the idea that growth occurs one step at a time. This means learning to think differently. We don’t have to be content with incremental, gradual change through the application of hard work. Sonia’s new business plan promised significant growth over the next three years. She planned to expand her already successful business into several new areas with her hyper-local product. She expected to pour more hours into her business over the next 12 to 18 months until she built it to the point where she’d hire additional sales staff. She believed her strategy would pay off in the long run, and she stepped up her activity to follow her plan. Soon she felt the stress of spreading herself too thin, but she stayed the course. Even with all the additional activity, and with her growth into

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

18

new towns, she missed her first milestone. Then she missed her second and began to wonder what she was doing wrong. She worked harder and harder, but she could feel herself losing steam. I challenged her to think differently rather than try harder, and I helped her reconnect with her natural ability to foster humor and her gift of building relationships with clients. She made a couple adjustments and began having more fun in her business. Inspired, one evening as she was driving home, she wondered if she could increase her profitability by expanding her product offerings in her local area rather than creating new products to serve new areas. She went to work on a spreadsheet, and the numbers told the rest of the story. Elated, she redirected her efforts into the part of her business she enjoyed most and realized an immediate jump in sales. Her success leapt forward – but not as a result of conventional thinking. How might Sonia’s story be your story? Are you following a plan designed to create a particular outcome, but it’s not? Or perhaps you’re working harder and harder, but finding yourself losing steam? Perhaps you’re making progress in small increments, and you simply haven’t looked at

options that would generate an exponential leap. Research in neuroscience and positive psychology reveals strategies to move from incremental change to leaping forward and building rapid momentum. Sonia’s story includes some of what neuroscientists are proving in laboratories. Of course, you know that to generate different results, you and I take different actions, and these actions are preceded by thought. When we’re stressed, our brain releases chemicals that reinforce safety. We’re less creative. When Sonia reconnected to her natural gifts and what she most enjoyed about her business, she started having more fun. Her brain chemistry actually changed, and she connected to her creativity. Open to a new perspective, she generated an idea that caused her business to leap forward – with less rather than more work. Perhaps you remember one of my previous articles where I wrote that the quality of your questions determines the quality of your results. This makes sense. If Sonia kept asking, “How can I be more efficient and get more done today?” she may never have asked, “How can I do more of what I enjoy, while making it easier to run my business and increase revenue?”

HERE ARE SOME GREAT RESOURCES TO CONSIDER BY GIG HARBOR HOME MANAGEMENT WHETHER YOU ARE PREPARING for an upcoming move, assisting a loved one with a downsizing transition, or striving to live simply, these four books will encourage, motivate and guide you through each step. “Sell, Keep or Toss? How to Downsize a Home, Settle an Estate and Appraise Personal Property” by Harry L. Rinker Author Harry L. Rinker, a collectibles expert and professional appraiser, answers virtually every question you might have about the process of decluttering and selling your belongings. His practical advice will help you determine resale value, handle the emotional turmoil of letting go, and know when to call in the experts. “Creating memories is the key to successfully passing a family heirloom to the next generation. If you want your family treasures to be treasured by the next generation, you need to create memories with them. Use your grandparents’ dinnerware, flatware and stemware when entertaining your children. Memories are made standing around the kitchen sink washing these items by hand and talking. Take pictures while you do all this and pass these down with the objects. Most importantly, write down and record the family stories associated with your family heirlooms.” “Re-Creating Home: Downsizing and DeCluttering After 50” by Fran Scoville and Holley Ulbrich With suggested “homework” at the end of each section, this is a working guide for overcoming obstacles, making a plan, and

navigating the emotional challenges of each step. With insights on how our various personality traits impact our downsizing techniques, it speaks to everyone. “No major change in life is without its sunny side and its shadow, and every person’s experience is at least a little bit different.” “Downsize…Start Now! A Short, Simple Guide for Boomers, Older Adults, and Anyone Who Wants to Organize Their Home and Simplify Their Life” by Sarah L.O.J. Hunter Whether you’re moving to a new home or downsizing “in place,” this book offers organizing principles and advice for dealing with challenging areas like photos, junk mail, clothing, family treasures and sentimental clutter. With a helpful checklist and appendix, this simple format makes a long process much easier. “Scaling Down: Living Large in a Smaller Space” by Judi Culbertson and Marj Decker Written by two organizing experts, this book provides short and simple worksheets, quizzes and step-by-step instructions. From navigating the complex task of dividing family heirlooms among children, to freeing yourself from the obligation to keep unwanted gifts, this is a resource you can refer to throughout your transition. Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

Financial Focus WATCH FOR CHANGES TO THE FAFSA ARTICLE PROVIDED BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR IF YOU HAVE A CHILD in college, you’re probably familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which must be completed to help ensure that students don’t miss out on federal and state grants, work-study jobs and loans. But you might not know that some important changes will be coming to the FAFSA during 2016 – and these changes can affect both the process of filing for aid, and, possibly, the amount of aid your child will receive. Here are three key changes to watch for: • Earlier availability of the FAFSA – Currently, you need to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 – which means you’re probably filling out the form even before you’ve filed your taxes, which aren’t due until April. As a result, you may have to estimate your income and update the information later. However, beginning with the 2017–2018 school year, you can complete the FAFSA starting on October 1 of the previous calendar year, rather than wait until January. At that point, you will already have filed your 2015 taxes, so in filling out the FAFSA, you won’t have to rely on estimates of your income. For 2016 only, this change presents something of an anomaly – specifically, you should fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible for the 2016–2017 school year, using an estimate of your 2015 income, and then complete the FAFSA again in October for the 2017–2018 school year, using your actual 2015 income. In future years, you’ll only have to complete the FAFSA once, with applications accepted beginning each October 1. • Lower “asset protection” allowance –When you report your financial information on the FAFSA, some of your assets – such as your IRA and 401(k) – are not counted toward the resources

you’re expected to contribute to your child’s education. Some other assets are considered available, but a percentage of these assets can be sheltered, with the exact amount depending largely on your age and marital status. For the 2017 school year, this sheltered asset amount has been reduced significantly. However, while this reduction could have some effect on your student’s aid package, it shouldn’t be too severe because income, more than assets, is a bigger factor in the federal financial aid formula. • No more shared mailing list – When filing the FAFSA, students can choose up to 10 colleges to receive their financial information. Previously, when students sent their FAFSAs to multiple colleges and universities, these schools could see the other institutions on the mailing list. But starting with the 2016–2017 application, schools will no longer have this information. This could actually benefit your child. Previously, if a school saw it was listed first on the FAFSA, it might have assumed it was the student’s first choice and, as a result, may not have felt the need to be flexible in awarding financial aid. Now, though, without a list of its competitors, a school might be more open to negotiating a more favorable aid package for your child. It’s a good idea to stay current on the changes connected to the FAFSA because it helps determine financial aid eligibility – and financial aid is a key component of your strategy to pay for your child’s (or grandchild’s) education. This information is offered for broad, informational purposes only. Edward Jones does not employ financial aid experts or give financial aid advice. This is a highly specialized field, and specific questions should be directed to a qualified financial aid officer.

A Modern Day Renaissance MAKING OVER MANUFACTURING: FROM MECHANIZATION TO MAKERS’ SPACES BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS This is part one of two-part series.

for current practices are at the core of the modern maker. Today’s makers are today’s inventors. They are curious, creative and resourceful innovators; photographers, knitters, hackers, painters, woodworkers, graphic designers, artists, builders, engineers, programmers, bakers, musicians…you name it.

WE ARE LIVING IN AMAZING TIMES! In this modern day Renaissance, we are in the process of shaping the future of human civilization. From water-wheels to clocks to the steam engine, humans continued to work toward improving the design of machines. Over centuries, mechanization slowly evolved until the Industrial Revolution arrived with the burgeoning of self-acting machine tools fueled by coal, oil and gas.

Once considered a counterculture or subculture movement, makers are now evolving and transforming our accepted manufacturing processes, our economy and therefore designing the future. Some of these entrepreneurial self-starters are even taking on the big retailers! The Maker Movement is, according to Adweek, an umbrella term for the independent inventors, designers and tinkerers in search of selfreliance, employing open-source learning and contemporary techniques on a local level. “The creations, born in cluttered local workshops and bedroom offices, stir the imaginations of consumers numbed by generic, mass-produced, made-in-China merchandise.”

The opportunities and challenges of our times stem from those advances. Today, we add even more ingredients into the mix: a slew of technological advances, emerging transparency in products and processes, as well as the availability to effectively harness clean forms of energy. Boom! Enter the age of our modern makers – taking the best of human progress and literally retooling it.

A maker brings back old-school approaches with a newly found pragmatism; local, adaptive, realistic solutions that weave today’s technological advances with real skills and craft. They address real world

The right mix of inspiration, opportunity, accessible tools and disdain

problems. From homebrew computer labs to building tech gadgets with 3-D printers to local gardeners canning homegrown veggies to furniture makers using 3-D carving machines. Makerspaces may be as diverse as the passions they embrace. It’s not the tools that define the space; it’s what the space enables – the ability to make!

Spaces might be as small as repurposed book carts filled with building blocks, donated craft supplies and recycling container collections. Or they may be large dedicated areas with crammed full of old-school tools all the way to spacious full-on techno-labs.

Makerspaces may be as diverse as the passions they embrace.

You name it. tiny house, granny suite, backyard cottage, sidekick-in-law, attached or detached, basement apartment, compact design, small footprint housing, love shack, on-grid-off-grid

Many makerspaces host classes ranging from home economics to science and programming courses. Informal, playful and wonder-driven, the most important commonality of the makerspace is to encourage creativity and support the learning process that unfolds.

We build it.

What began as an evolution over a decade ago, we may soon come to realize as a revolution. This revolution is world-wide, growing rapidly and is expected to disrupt the economy as we know it today. A modern day Renaissance, maker culture is a response to mass-produced products and a call to action to all members of society no matter what walk of life. It is a fully accessible, intergenerational culture that engages, even drives, positive changes in our communities. Part two next month will discuss the maker philosophy and the impacts of this movement.

SECLUDED DISCREETLY behind a simple gate and thick shrubbery on Burnham Dr. NW near Harbor Hill is home to a one of the most active groups in Washington dedicated to protecting the natural beauty of the Evergreen State. In the 75 years since it was organized, the Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club has evolved to match the needs of the community, from a private shooting range to a community resource for outdoor safety and conservation. “The club prides in working to preserve our natural resources,” explained Rick Gaida, the club’s current president. “We coordinate our efforts with the state Department of Fish and

Wildlife as well as conservation groups like Ducks Unlimited.” Gaida stressed that the club is open to the public. He encourages local residents to tour the separate ranges for pistol, rifle and archery practice. The club also provides members access to shot gun ranges that feature skeet shooting with clay targets. “That,” said Gaida, “is where the environmental concerns began.” The sportsman’s club has pledged to remove more than 60 years worth of lead shot from the grounds by literally scraping down into as much as 10 to 12 inches of dirt to remove

the contaminants. The work is being done with cooperation from the state Department of Ecology and the private firm of Farallon Consulting. The club’s governing board also voted to spend $250,000 to install heavy curtains that will insure that lead does not leave the grounds of the club. “We’ve all know about the dangers of lead paint and what’s been happening in Flint, Michigan. The club has spent tens of thousands of dollars to collect and recycle lead from shot used on the property.” Most of lead collected, he said, is shipped to China where it can be refined and used to manufacture batteries. Volunteers have also begun to strip the petroleum-based products from the surface of targets and introduced the use of biodegradable alternatives. Easy access In addition its efforts to preserve the environment, the club is working closely with the city of Gig Harbor to extend Harbor Hill Road through club property where it currently ends just south of the YMCA to connect with Burnham Drive near 97th Street Northwest. When completed, the $11.5 million project will connect downtown Gig Harbor with the fastest growing section of the city and ease congestion on Route 16. The proposed roadway will run along the perimeter of the club property

adjacent to the club’s rifle range. Concessions by the club will “significantly impact a portion of the club’s firing range,” according to Gig Harbor Public Works Director Jeff Langhelm. Gaida described the negotiations with the city as “amiable.” From its humble beginnings in the 1930s, the Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club now boasts a membership that often approaches 1,800 duespaying outdoor enthusiasts. The club regularly opens its doors to law enforcement officers, troops of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, school field trips, organized corporate events and “anybody who loves outdoor recreation.” Gaida admitted that membership, and gun ownership, spike with each report of gun violence. “We want to promote good sportsmanship and be good neighbors,” said Gaida. “We participate in community events and sponsor activities throughout the year whenever we can.” The club has come down hard on the use of armor piercing ammunition. Any member caught using the illegal ammo is immediately ejected from the grounds. Further discipline, including revocation of membership, will be determined by the board. The club president does not blame members who mistakenly purchase the banned bullets. He said the armor piercing ammo has become more available to the public at a lower cost than standard ammunition in recent years as military surplus.

While the environmental efforts were not part of charter when the club incorporated in 1947, the mission of the non-profit organization continues to be education. The club offers “extremely friendly” classes in handgun safety, a course in pistol training approved by the National Rifle Association (NRA), clay target shooting as well as orientations on the proper use of the firing range. Gaida emphasized that a qualified professional is always within a few steps from anybody using the firing range. He added that women continue to make up a larger portion of students in gun safety classes with each session. The club, he said, has even hosted birthday parties for groups of young people. The Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club has been a part of the community for almost seven decades. The club president said that the gates are always open for visitors who want to see all the positive things happening behind the grove of trees. “We want people to know that we are more than a bunch of gang bang neighbors taking target practice.” Dan Aznoff was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the toxic waste crisis. WORK HARD, PLAY NICE GROWING UP IN A FAMILY of real estate developers and builders, Gretchen Allen witnessed what it took to be a success. “I quickly learned first-hand that ‘client priority service’ was paramount to a successful home sale,” said Allen, a Realtor® and Broker with Allen & Associates. “My dad would say, ‘when you do the right thing, you are always rewarded and that will put a smile on your face.’” Allen has been putting smiles on clients’ faces for the last 17 years as a Five Star Realtor® who is consistently a top one percent producer with RE/MAX On the Lake, the largest Washington state real estate brokerage firm which has six offices in the Pacific Northwest. “Our motto is ‘Work Hard, Play Nice.’ It truly matters at the end of the day and is a direct correlation to my childhood belief system and how I like to do business,” said Allen whose area of discipline is in residential home and land sales. “My focus is in the listing and selling of luxury, waterfront and acreage homes with a client emphasis on relocation, first-time home buyers and seniors.” Her success has been due in large part to not only her passion for what she does, but her commitment to building relationships and exhibiting the values of respect, loyalty and integrity in all of her transactions. But if you ask her, she said she owes her success to her grandmother. “My grandmother, O’Lena Christine Anderson, taught me the giving and forgiving principles that mattered first,” said Allen. “And then secondly I owe my success to my parents as they instilled in me what my family called the ‘smile principle’ or ‘client priority’ service. Both resonate with me on a daily basis and the remembrance of my dad’s smiles just makes you want to smile too.” Allen said she came to Gig Harbor after representing buyers here over the last decade. “Many of my clients that were experiencing the empty nest phase in their lives as their grown children were out of the house,” said Allen. “They desired a quiet, easy, people kindness yet vibrant pace of life. So off to Gig Harbor we went. The common denominator is that they wanted to enjoy a relaxing waterfront experience while being a part of an idyllic community. This very thought stuck in the back of my mind and that one day I was determined to experience it for myself.” When Allen became an empty nester, she too moved from her home in Sammamish to beautiful Gig Harbor. She has been here over a year and is thrilled to find the amazing lifestyle Gig Harbor has to offer as so many of her clients did before her. And true to her nature, it did not take long for Allen to integrate herself into her new hometown. In addition to her volunteer activities throughout the region, which include the Children’s Hospital,

GOOD NEWS BY MEGAN OLSON PHOTOS COURTESY CAMERON HARRIS

AN UNEXPECTED GIFT CAMPUS CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP OFFERS HOPE TO OTHERS

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves. 2 Corinthians 4:7 THE EXTRAORDINARY BEAUTY of life is that we don’t really know how our story will unravel before our eyes. Each day is just a chapter of a great and mysterious novel. We make our methodical move to the right and life brings us a sharp and unexpected turn to the left. If we knew the outcome of

God opens doors so that the right people can step in at His precise and perfect moment. our path, we would become crippled with fear. In our paralysis, we wouldn’t be able

to hear God’s whisper nor feel His comfort when He speaks “Do not be afraid.” If we knew of our impending tragedies and grief, we would never take the step to go outside. There would be no splendor of watching the sun slip past the horizon or the feeling of a summer’s wind as it caresses the face and tangles the hair. We’d flee from the tenderness of love’s kiss and the sweetness enveloped in the breath of new life. It is in our brokenness where God seeks us and sheds light so that we may be used to fulfill His purpose. God has this unique and perfect way of bringing strangers together in the most unexpected of ways. He brings the unimaginable to life and molds it into something magnificent. Sometimes, His work is so mystifying and inexplicable that there is no other way to explain the

circumstance other than to attribute it to Him. In November, Idaho resident Connie Welch didn’t know that her life was about to change. She took that step outside of her door; unaware of how God was going to use her. She set out on her 450 mile journey to attend her mother’s 95th birthday at the Mount Baker Care Center in Bellingham, Washington. On the day of her mother’s birthday, there was an accident where Connie fell and broke her pelvis. In a moment’s notice, she literally became a broken vessel. She was hundreds of miles from home and was unable to return to Idaho until she had sufficiently healed. It was determined that the best place for her recovery was with her mother at the Mount Baker Care Facility. There isn’t an in-house chaplain for this

assisted living facility. Connie had been searching for someone to visit her mother, but to no avail. She didn’t know that her mother was only weeks away from passing. During her time at Mount Baker, she began to notice the subtleties of God’s presence at the facility despite the lack of a chaplain. As the nurse intern with the cross earrings entered Connie’s room, a conversation was ignited. Bellingham has been referenced as the “hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest” and is nestled 80 miles north of Seattle. It also is home to Western Washington University that offers 160 academic programs to 15,000 students. Of those 15,000 students, Lindsey had entered Connie’s room on that day. When Connie asked her about her cross earrings, Lindsey told her of how she had given her life over to Christ and that she belongs to the Campus Christian Fellowship at WWU. Lindsey had been serving the elderly with the Fellowship and developed

a huge heart for geriatric patients. When Connie told her nurse with the pretty cross earrings about not being able to find a chaplain, Lindsey knew exactly where to turn. Lindsey’s pastor, Cameron Harris, had already established student teams with the Campus Christian Fellowship for the purpose of serving the elderly in Bellingham. Cameron asserts “We are called to serve the widows, orphans and the elderly.” It wasn’t long until Cameron would come to visit Connie and to pray for her ailing mother. God opens doors so that the right people can step in at His precise and perfect moment. While visiting Connie and her mother at Mount Baker Care Facility, there literally was an open door to the office of the Social Work Director. This instance facilitated a dialogue and an opportunity for the Campus Christian Fellowship to begin serving at Mount Baker. It

was a combination of an unfortunate accident and a simple conversation that would lead to a much grander scheme; broken vessels with a willingness to be used by God. In December, Campus Christian Fellowship was able to bring a choir to sing at Mount Baker. The Fellowship is in the final stages of protocol before they will be able to consistently serve at Mount Baker Care Facility. We are the child playing in the sand at the beach; all we see before us is our bucket of water. Sometimes, our view is so limited and we are unable to grasp the bigger picture. We are unable to see the entire ocean in the background. After Connie returned home to Idaho, her beloved mother passed days later. Despite the unfortunate fall, Connie was given the most elusive and precious gift of all. The gift of time. There is no way to measure the value of time with a beloved person before they pass from this life to the next. How many of us have lost someone only to think “I wish I had had more time.”

GIG HARBOR

IN FOCUS A Father’s Journey Loss of his son inspires father’s commitment to raise awareness to the signs of teen suicide B Y DA N A Z N O F F

GIG HARBOR RESIDENT Bob Anderson can still remember the day he learned to cry. It was the Saturday afternoon after Thanksgiving in 1998. He was at his home in Iowa ironing a red and white striped shirt when the sheriff knocked on the door to inform him that his only son had committed suicide. “That afternoon changed my life forever,” said Anderson. “Suicide was not even a word in our vocabulary.” The former high school teacher made the decision to learn more about why a young person would want to take their own life. When he retired five years ago, Anderson moved to Gig Harbor to be closer to his daughters and his grandchildren in Puyallup. His passion led Anderson to become involved with the Gig Harbor/Key Peninsula Youth Suicide Prevention Coalition. His first recommendation was to drop the word youth from the group’s name. Teen suicide, he explained, attracts the majority of headlines. But the trend is increasing in every segment of population. The suicide rate in Gig Harbor is 30 percent higher than Pierce County, according to Anderson, and suicides are more common among members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, drug users and people who are

victimized by bullies. However, no segment of the population is immune from the heartache. Anderson’s activism has also taught him some difficult lessons, including that only automobile accidents kill more people under the age of 18 across the country than suicide. He said women have a higher rate of attempted suicides but that more men kill themselves because most of men use a gun. Suicides are more common in rural areas than in cities, he said, presumably because of the easy access to guns. He emphasized there is little evidence to prove that gun ownership leads to more suicides. Contrary to what most people are taught, Anderson said suicide is not the act of somebody seeking attention. It is most often the sad result of depression that is either undiagnosed or not reported to the proper authorities. Anderson has also become a mainstay of a suicide survivor group and an advocate for confronting the problem of suicide head-on. The one lesson he has learned after listening to stories about troubled young people was the lack of awareness among to the warning signs for suicide. “People were just as shocked as I was when Rob killed himself,” Anderson remembered. “There is no way to tell how many people have heard the

Anderson said he had not been educated to be aware of the warning signs of suicide. Looking back at the day Rob died, his son had been home from college and been thrust into the middle of an awkward situation between his divorced parents. Anderson remembered talking with his son on the telephone that morning. Rob had just been given a Bible by a friend and had was looking forward to seeing a movie before returning to school the next day. However, there was something about that last conversation that troubled Anderson. He immediately tried to call his son back, but Rob did not answer his father’s desperate phone call. “If I knew then what I know now, I would have dropped everything and driven the two miles to his mother’s house,” he said sadly. “People need to talk about the situation with somebody they love before it is too late.” The local suicide prevention coalition was formed five years ago when 25 professionals from schools and the community came together in the wake of the tragedy after two brothers from the same family killed themselves. The twin deaths in 2011 brought the total number of suicides of people under 18 years old to 10 in less than a decade, according to Gig Harbor High School counselor Todd Dempewolf. Suicide can have a ripple effect on communities as small as Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula, he said. “One person’s death—and especially a suicide — can touch people throughout the region in so many different ways,” said Dempewolf. “The mission of the coalition is to raise awareness and not pigeon hole the issue

Suicide has been a taboo subject for too many years. The only way to prevent more deaths is to bring the issue out into the open.

“Social media has created another level of anxiety among young people.” Said Cooper. “Middle school students can feel the financial pressure at home when both parents are forced to work. Not having enough time as family can impact young people in ways their parents never dealt with when they were in school.” Anderson said peer counseling is a key ingredient to raising the awareness of suicide for students as young as the eighth grade. Cooper added that that The Lifesavers have staged meetings for middle school students dealing with specific issues, including gender identity.

to people who are simply selfish. Suicide has been a taboo subject for too many years. The only way to prevent more deaths is to bring the issue out into the open.” The counselor praised Anderson for “taking the reins” of the coalition from the professional who had founded the group. The grieving father has recruited colleagues from the Rotary Club to sponsor “Safe Talk” seminars that train members of the community how to be aware of the warning signs of suicide. The Safe Talk workshops are three-hour sessions limited to 30 individuals that teach the warning signs of suicide with an emphasis on phrases that are negative or sarcastic. Some comments, said Dempewolf, can be easily overlooked or dismissed as trivial. Attendees are instructed to contact the appropriate social agency to deal with the situation. Peggy Cooper, a counselor at Peninsula High School, described the passion that Anderson has shared with the coalition as, “An inspiration.” His message of education and awareness, she said, were behind the creation of a student group at her Peninsula High aptly named, The Lifesavers. In addition to programs at the high school, the PHS students have taken their message to middle school classrooms throughout the district. The outreach was inspired by the suicide of one middle school student the previous year.

Straight up “Most members of the coalition are not trained professionals. We need to be taught to be aware of the signs so we can ask them straight up if they are thinking about ending their life,” said Anderson. “Many times all it takes is somebody to reach out and show compassion for another individual who is in pain.” Serving as the leader of the coalition was nothing new for Anderson. He retired from his position as a high school journalism teacher to take a position with the state legislature in Iowa and then worked with a number of nonprofit organizations before moving to the Northwest. Anderson admitted that he does not shy away from talking about suicide or the death of his son. He has been asked to intervene but underscored that the plea for open discussion is most powerful when delivered by a member of the family. PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE SERVICE ABOVE SELF. That is the motto of Rotary International and one that The Rotary Club of Gig Harbor Midday takes to heart. Since it was first established in 2009, The Midday Rotary Club has done much to improve the quality of life for many in our community. And they have done so enthusiastically and with a passion to make a difference. Some of the many causes the Midday Rotary Club has helped through volunteer time and monetary support include the local food banks, the Children’s Home Society holiday program, the Communities in Schools program, Interact Clubs of Gig Harbor and Henderson Bay High Schools, the BackPack Brigade, Court Appointed Special Advocates, suicide prevention training, Courage Classic Bicycle Tour, the Sexual Assault Center of Pierce County, the Gig Harbor Thanksgiving Basket Brigade, and Prison Pet Partnership at Purdy. They do much to make a difference internationally as well. How does one club accomplish so much? It is in large part due to its membership of dedicated leaders and caring individuals. They also have a supportive community that continues to help further its efforts to raise money and for that they are grateful. But for anyone who has ever worked on a fundraiser, they know it is a lot of work. For the Midday Rotary Club, it is a lot of fun too as is evidenced by their annual fundraiser the Golferitaville Golf Tournament. They are currently in the planning stage for their 12th Annual South Sound Premier Charity Tournament, and Golferitaville 2016 will take place on July 15 at McCormick Woods Golf Course. This premium golf tournament is run by the Club’s Midday Foundation Charity, a 501(C)(3). Described as a full day of “Cheeseburgers in Paradise,” sunny skies, great food, famous Demitri’s blood marys, and a lot of margaritas, there is also live Caribbean music, wonderful prizes, local celebrities and more flamingos than you can shake a stick at! “We also have food, drinks and games at every tee,” added Lonna Calas, one of the organizers of the event. But there is a lot more in store as well. With over $10,000 in raffle prices and a chance to win a flat screen TV at the putting green, participants also have an opportunity at a new car or cash prizes if they make a hole-in-one at key holes. And to put you in the mood for the day, come dressed in your best tropical attire and decorate your cart and you may also be eligible for a prize. While their motto is “Service Above Self.” Midday Rotary President Howard Svigals emphasizes that wanting to serve isn’t enough. “You need a place to serve, a cause to support and like-minded people to work with. Our two major fundraisers are what define us and bring money into worthy causes,” he said. Their other annual fundraiser, Harbor Hounds, a charity dog walk takes place August 27. It is a fun day spent in the Harbor with your pet and, like the golf tournament, helps to provide the Club

And that is something she attributes to her coach, Kathy Crowley. “She has taught me to be confidant in who I am and to believe in myself in all situations,” said Allie. “She has shown me how to be a true leader in all things I do even if it’s not cheer related.”

Allie is in the running start program and will graduate this spring with her general associate’s degree. She has yet to decide where

she will attend school next year, but plans to tryout for cheer wherever she goes. As for her career plan, Allie said she has wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as she can remember. “Growing up we also had a lot of animals which give me a special love for animals,” said Allie who is keeping her options open. “Recently I have found a passion for psychology. Learning about the brain and development of not only myself but the others around me has affected how I look at many things.” Whatever path she follows, it is obvious that Allie will go forth with confidence.

Ryan Grady - Gig Harbor High School Ryan Grady has learned early in life what it takes to balance his commitments. At 16, he is in the running start program through Gig Harbor High School. In addition to academics, Ryan keeps busy as a swimmer on the boys swim and dive team. “I have competed at the state championships in my freshman and sophomore years and have qualified in two events this year at the state meet,” said Ryan who last year placed 14th in the 500 freestyle and 13th in the 200 freestyle. Ryan is also a member of the Gig Harbor canoe and kayak racing team and represented Team USA at several international events including Poland and Slovakia. “Balancing two sports and a college-level

academic load is challenging, and I could not do it without the support of my family and friends,” said Ryan gratefully. His future plans include a degree in math or science, and he hopes to continue to compete in sports at the collegiate level. If there is one lesson that Ryan has learned through athletics, it is the fact that competition isn’t just about himself. “It’s about strengthening your faith and mental attitude, giving back to the sport, and following the legacy of athletes who have come before you. When I do well at a competition, I think of it as paying it forward to the next winner, passing on the legacy of hard work, determination and mental toughness to future generations.”

Stars of the Year

Gig Harbor residents honored by local Rotary Clubs

THREE PROMINENT citizens were recognized for their contributions to the Gig Harbor community last month at the annual awards banquet hosted by the three local chapters of Rotary International. Youth advocate Jud Morris, businessman Jim Borgen and former Pierce County Councilman Terry Lee were each presented with Star of the Year awards during the 7th annual combined gathering of the local clubs. None of the honorees are current members of the Rotary Club, according to District 5020 spokesman Al Abbott. However, each winner exemplifies the mission of “Service Above Self ” the organization exemplifies by giving back to the community. “Each chapter nominates one individual every year,” said Abbott. “There have been a few times when two chapters have nominated the same person. But that’s an easy problem to overcome because there are plenty of amazing people who live right here in our community.” Rotarians from as far away as Oregon and Vancouver Island were in attendance for the 2016 ceremonies at the Canterwood Golf and Country Club. Rotary Director-elect John Matthews from Chehalis in Lewis County was in attendance to present the awards to the trio of recipients. “People in the know, knew they should be at the country club that night,” said Abbott. “It was the place to be in Gig Harbor.”

The Star of the Year Awards program began as a brainchild of Rotarian Nancy Rimel to bring members of the separate clubs together for a single evening to celebrate deserving individuals who make Gig Harbor an incredible place to work and live, said Abbott. Each recipient also received the Paul Harris Fellow Award in recognition of individual commitment to the ideals of Rotary. The award is named in honor of Paul Harris, a lawyer in Chicago who founded Rotary in 1905. The award was first presented in 1957. Bikes for Kids The first honor of the evening went to Morris, who was recognized by the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor (also known as the morning club) as Citizen of the Year for his work with Children’s Home Society as director of the Key Peninsula Resource Center. His efforts to embrace the needs of young people has resulted in the creation of numerous programs, services and partnerships that support youth and families.

are done completely on a volunteer basis,” said Abbott. “That has not stopped him from doing an amazing job to educate people on the Peninsula about the services that are available to them right here in their own backyard.” Abbott singled out the Bikes for Kids Program that Morris organized to give away a bicycle each day during December to a child who would not otherwise have had a two-wheeler under the tree on Christmas morning. Morris not only arranged for the donation of the bikes, said Abbott, he also recruited members of his Rotary chapter to assemble the fleet of bicycles. Pro Bono The Midday Rotary Club of Gig Harbor presented its Businessperson of the Year Award to Borgen, who works as a sales representative for a company that provides wholesale cement products. Borgen, according to Abbott, is

known throughout the Gig Harbor community for volunteering as auctioneer and master of ceremonies for numerous charities and civic organizations. His efforts have raised millions of dollars for groups like the Harbor History Museum, the Boys and Girls Club and school groups of every size and description. “Jim is from one of the oldest families in Gig Harbor and has become an icon in this city over the past 10 to 15 years riding around town with the top down on his Volkswagon during the summer months with his dog Al,” said Abbott. “He is quite a comic and he never, ever says no to anybody. It does not matter what the organization is or what is the cause they are raising money for. Jim’s services are always provided pro bono.” Borgen was not only honored by the Rotary at the awards dinner in February, he also served as the auctioneer for the Dessert Dash at the

annual dinner to raise funds to support the many efforts by Rotary that benefit residents of Gig Harbor. Above Self The final honor of the evening was the “Service Above Self ” award presented to Lee by the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor North (known as the evening club). As an elected official, Lee served his community as a member of the Gig Harbor City Council prior to his term on the county council. The Rotary honors, however, were not for anything he had done for his constituents. The 2016 Star of the Year Award was in recognition for Lee’s commitment to the four-legged residents of the area.

The Star of the Year Awards program began as a brainchild of Rotarian Nancy Rimel to bring members of the separate clubs together for a single evening to celebrate deserving individuals who make Gig Harbor an incredible place to work and live. According to Abbott, Lee served as director of the PenMet Parks board after his tenure in elected office. As the parks director, Lee was instrumental in establishing numerous off-leash dog parks, including the Rotary Bark Park on 14th Ave NW in Gig Harbor. He also directed the acquisition of additional park property that was developed to become Peninsula Gardens and the Fox Island Sand Spit. “Terry Lee is an interesting character. He lives by the mantra, ‘The more I give, the more people give back to me’,” Abbott said with a smile. “He is always available to help in ways that go far beyond his areas of responsibility.”

As an example, Abbott was quick to mention that Lee established the Rotary Bark Park by enrolling members of the local chapters to cover the cost and install benches and signage at the dog park. During his term on the county council, Lee was instrumental in bringing the Boys and Girls Club to Gig Harbor and negotiated the acquisition of the Narrows Airport from the City of Tacoma. He also played a key role in the development of Timbers Bay Golf Course and extensions to the Cushman Trail. Cushman Trail is a paved route for pedestrian and bike route that shares much of its corridor with overhead Tacoma Power electric lines. Along the way, trail users traverse several large hills through areas of scenic beauty. In the north, the trail winds through Wilkinson Farm Park on a pin pile bridge to minimize the impact to the natural wetlands. An on-road segment near the trail’s midpoint connects bikers and pedestrians to Gig Harbor’s Pierce Transit Park and Ride lot on Kimball Drive.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

44

In the south, the trail parallels State Route 16 before ending less than a mile west of Puget Sound. The process of selecting the Stars of the Year begins with the nominating process each July. The winners, according to Abbott, are determined by comparing the individual’s effort with the ideals of Rotary. LOST ARTS... THAT ACTUALLY AREN’T!

M

y grandson likes to play Santa and give family members their presents from under the Christmas tree, but the names on the gift tags must be written in print. Why? Because he can’t read cursive; schools no longer teach it. And penmanship is passé. Handwriting is exiting into obsolescence, replaced by the keyboard. So surely calligraphy – the ancient art developed by scribes and named from the Greek words ”kalos”

admittedly pleased to say the answer is “no.” Yes, calligraphic fonts are common and graphic artists produce similar effects. And yet, the byhand art of calligraphy flows unobtrusively alongside the incoming tide of the computer age. How does it manage to survive? It is still the most elegant, eloquent way to commemorate and celebrate, acknowledge and honor, love and adore, and express insights and inspirations. It often includes “illumination,” where a glow is imparted to the page with bright colors and burnished gold applied with special pens and brushes. And because it is, in essence, literature as art, the element of a soul channeled through human hands renders it immune to death by technology. Calligraphy is alive and flourishing! Lanie Johnson, an artist and calligrapher for 40 years, speaks of the

(beautiful) and “graphos” (writing or drawing) — has long since been culturally entombed, hasn’t it? I am

unique creative process involved as we tour her work on exhibit. Her original poetry plus other poems, essays, quotations and inspirations are expressed in “calligraphic imagery,” which means words made into pictures, and brings writing into the realm of interpretative design and emotional expression. One method is to

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

49

change the color of the letters to form an image. Other more complex artwork incorporates calligraphy into a painting with an intriguing layering technique. She lovingly unzips a travel-battered leather portfolio and reveals samples of a life’s work in scripted creativity. As she pages through commissioned personal works, menus, awards, diplomas and certificates, announcements and wedding invitations, she muses about the essence of handmade calligraphy. “The lettering is nuanced,” she observes, noting how the type of pen and the interaction of ink and paper create a distinct originality born in the moment of writing. “So much of it is a concept from the artist’s inner self. Any (time an) artist is sharing their thought process and their feelings; it comes from them personally, and it’s not an automated thing you can get with just the push of a button.” She notes that, “The designs, artwork and illustrations are original. Each one is unique. That’s one thing I think people like, the fact that their invitation or menu is theirs alone – no one else will have one like it.” “It can’t be duplicated mechanically,” she concludes. “You do so many things spontaneously in the process of making a piece. It’s the difference of doing things by hand,” she finishes simply, expressing an element that escapes definition and yet is evident at a glance.

IVE EAT CR “Things done by hand belong in a different world than things done on a machine,” says Johnson. And yet the graceful effects of what is called “the dancing pen” endure even in our font-happy world. As one who carries on the tradition, who once taught it at the library along with calligraphers and artists Marita McDonough and Mike Franklin, who blends it as a key ingredient into her art, Johnson knows that calligraphy is handwritten chivalry, if you will. We cannot and do not want it to disappear. In fact, we treasure it as a lovely way to formalize, commemorate and add romance to important occasions and communications. The dancing pen choreographs the moments of our life… still. SEWING Coming in from the cold to the warmth of

seamstress Robin Jelinek’s business, Sew I So, I was greeted with the jingle of bells on the door handle, smiles from her assistants, and the happy clutter of a very busy sewing shop. It occurred to me that Jelinek’s business is always busy. My next thought was that in these days of buying new things when old things wear out, how could the arts of the seamstress still be in demand? I remembered seventh grade when boys were required to take wood and metal shop, while girls took Home Economics – a class in cooking and sewing. We made cookies, a skirt and a gym bag. My gym bag looked more like a skirt. Others did well and in fact saved money by making their own school clothes. With the rising cost of material plus mass production of lower-priced clothing, the only people who sew now are those who simply enjoy it. And yet –

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Jelinek and her staff are busy year-round. Why? The wow factor. Once people discover the many benefits of tailoring, it changes everything! One 24-year-old summer firefighter had a slightly heavier friend who admired his jacket, tried it on, zipped it right up, and it fit him perfectly! How could that be? Well, the jacket could expand accommodatingly. So the young man brought it to Jelinek who tailored it for his particular build – broad shoulders, narrow hips – and he was amazed at the “Dude!” difference. Women discover when jeans fit in the hips they tend to gap in the waist, until Jelinek tailors the waistband to fit. Their first turn-around in front of a mirror makes them customers for life. “Clothes are manufactured for a medium body type and according to generalized styling,

ELE GA NT

ITS TIC aR but we are born quite individualistically,” explains Jelinek. “So whether it’s shortening, lengthening, taking them in or letting them out, putting in darts – it’s the reshaping that makes the critical difference in how you look and feel. People like to have things made to look like they were custom-crafted for them.” Old favorites. Anyone who has tried to discreetly discard a man’s favorite tattered t-shirt or battered jacket will rejoice in Jelinek’s skill at preserving, transforming and saving treasured older garments. And men are not the only clothing-clingers. Women often bring in a much-loved, well-worn pair of jeans that has finally developed a rip, and Jelinek saves the day by making unnoticeable repairs. “People come in with their favorite shirts, pants, and a jacket that is ripped or worn somehow and ask if I can ‘save it.’” Their phrasing reveals how our

emotional attachments can outlast seams and fabric. And the answer is yes, she usually can. “They get to keep the favorite item they were going to have to throw away,” she smiles. In reparation, her skills as a designer – and sometimes as an engineer – come into play. She studies the garment and the challenge, and “figures out ways of repairing and patching so it’s not noticeable.” Her solutions are often ingenious and sometimes involve dissecting the garment and recreating it in ways that camouflage the repair. But worth it. Expensive items are often preserved by Jelinek’s discreet skills. Leather presents its own unique repair challenges. “When someone brings an expensive leather garment to a leather expert, they will sometimes be told it can’t be fixed, which is true, in the

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

51

standard way,” admits Jelinek. However! “I find a method to repair it in a minimalist way so you can still wear it, even though technically, it’s not reparable.” She recalls a client with a beautiful leather coat that had a small rip in the sleeve. “I opened it up and with double-stick leather tape and a pack patch glued in place, a three hundred dollar coat was saved.” Many people have old furs and according to Jelinek, “There’s no reason to let those furs languish. We can change them into fur collars, hats and cuffs so they don’t go to waste.” She can do the same with legally attained furs that aren’t luxurious, but can be put to good everyday use. “One pilot had the ugly synthetic fur removed from his jacket and real fur added – much more effective against the cold when flying – and a tanned animal hide with fur on it became a custom flight jacket!”

Transforming the everyday. Sometimes reshaping the neckline enhances a top in just the right way. Do you love t-shirts but prefer a more feminine neckline to the crewneck? Wish a turtleneck could be a V-neck? No problem. Another frequent challenge is the repair of men’s work clothes, according to Jelinek. Zippidy-do-dah. Life is perilous for zippers. The zipper sticks or breaks. You wash the item with the zipper and waist open, and the machine damages it. It gets caught in something. Winters

always result in lots of coats being brought in for zipper repair. “People think they have to be replaced, but that’s not always true,” explains Jelinek. “They can often be repaired.” The ups and downs. And of course, there is the weight loss and gain factor. When in weight transition, tailoring changes can accommodate the process instead of buying new clothes every ten pounds. Medical modifications. “When people are

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

52

wheelchair-bound, sometimes their clothes bunch up in their lap and get squished,” says Jelinek. She can fix that. She has modified pants to accommodate a catheter. She created a specialized cape so a client with Parkinson’s disease could be warmly wrapped in cold weather and more easily transferred into and out of a car. “The wrap didn’t catch on things,” explains Jelinek. Sporting chance. Jelinek created a custom spray skirt for a kayaker and did custom

modifications to a pair of pants to make them convenient during a lengthy endurance race. Join the club. There is a trick or two to sewing on custom patches for jacket insignias so they “look right and hang properly.” Memory lane. When treasured clothing items have been in a big box for years or are taking up space in drawers or closets, people can have the important portion incorporated into memory pillows so they don’t have to keep the entire garment. “They can also have a quilt made from a collection of favorite t-shirts, for instance, perhaps preserving the logo or the titles from sporting events.” Home décor. Slip covers can change the look of your furniture in a moment, and are far more economical than reupholstering. “I made a reversible one – quite a trick – in very expensive fabric that was two different colors so she could change the colors depending on the seasons.” As a seamstress, Jelinek is also something of an engineer, a designer and a magician. Her admirably modest conclusion is, “I figure out how to make it work – and look good.” And as long as the rest of us can’t quite do that, the art of the seamstress will not only survive, it will thrive.

Their mission is to encourage smart growth and optimal change throughout the Peninsula High School campus.

Anyone knows that funding is a challenge in any school district, and Peninsula High School parent’s organization works to provide not only funding but support to all areas that benefit the students. This annual fundraiser goes a long way towards that goal with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to benefit the students through various projects. The Go Green Run begins at 9am at Judson Street and follows a seven-kilometer course back to the original start line. Participants can compete for the top finisher or simply show up and walk the course at your own leisurely pace. There will be a post race party at Skansie Park and also through various local businesses who are sponsoring the event. Entry fees are $20 for students and adults and anyone under the age of seven is free. A link to register can be found at

ow did we get here so fast? It doesn’t seem long ago that a mobile phone was simply one that didn’t have a cord attached to the wall, you set your schedule around the day and time your favorite TV show was on, and term paper research was done in the pages of a book inside a library. Today, everything we would ever want to know or see is at our finger tips and through DVRs and on-demand services, we dictate when to watch our favorite shows. Initially, most people thought taking a phone call in a group of people was rude, but now when we get together our phones are out on the table and often used as an interactive piece, showing a video, photos of our family, answering a question or settling a debate. Just as with the appearance of the printing press, daily newspaper, radio broadcast and color television, leading companies see the Internet as a vital platform to reach their consumers and get their message into the home. Digital marketing is the latest trend in branding to the masses, and the options online continue to evolve and grow. So what is it and how does a business get started? Let’s start with a few definitions. First, what exactly is digital marketing and what is not considered digital marketing? Traditional print, billboards, TV, and radio do not fall into the digital definition because these mediums do not provide instant data on exactly how many impressions your ad created. It’s not to say these mediums are not effective marketing

While digital marketing is an emerging and extremely important marketing tool, it should also coincide with other forms of media marketing. Fortune 500 retailers are taking full advantage of digital platforms but are still forking over tens of millions in commercials, billboards, sponsorships and print ads. All major companies know that putting all your eggs into one type of media is not an effective approach, and spreading your message over a multitude of mediums is the best way to build and maintain brand awareness. At Living Local 360, we are doing the same. We take your branding into multiple platforms including print,

social, web, search engines and email. A well-rounded marketing plan should include all these avenues as your company works toward top-of-mind awareness. Each impression your company makes is another reminder to the consumer. So when the time comes that they need your product or service, your business instantly comes to mind. You might not have tens of millions to market your small business, but no matter your budget, it goes further with Living Local 360 and the multi-media platform we offer. We are educators and are happy to help guide you through the ever-changing marketing landscape. Drop us a line anytime. Info@livinglocal360.com.

goal for any company of any size. The short of it is that digital marketing is a term used for a group of interactive products that target specific audiences using measurable digital technologies.

TECHNOLOGY THE SHORT OF IT IS THAT DIGITAL MARKETING IS A TERM USED FOR A GROUP OF INTERACTIVE PRODUCTS THAT TARGET SPECIFIC AUDIENCES USING MEASURABLE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES. platforms; it is just more difficult to track the number of direct respondents from the ad and exactly how many people saw it. Some consumers will respond to a call to action (coupon, specific offer), but ask yourself an honest question – when was the last time you walked into a business and told the person at the counter the reason you are in their store was because you saw their ad on page seven of the newspaper, heard their radio spot at 3:45 this afternoon, or saw their commercial on the morning news? It happens, but not all consumers are going to share this information and it was probably the combination of seeing multiple ads in multiple platforms that ultimately lead them to the storefront. This is called top-of-mind awareness and is the ultimate

Some of these technologies include social media marketing which places display ads and content inside facebook, twitter, instagram, and other platforms as a way to connect directly with consumers who have shown interest in your products. Utilizing hashtags like “#McDonaldsBreakfast” allows companies to directly reach out to people who enjoy their goods or service, and also allows them to monitor real-time feedback from consumers. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and website ranking allows businesses to be listed in a general web search. This can be done both by a paid service and organically, the latter being much more difficult. If you want to be the first business listed on a Google search of “Used furniture Seattle,” the search engine will guarantee your spot for a price. The more the search term is used and the broader it is, the higher the price. “Used furniture Seattle” will cost you much more than “Used Sealy Queen Mattress Seattle.” Hiring a professional SEO company will also help with your rankings as a good company stay on top of the algorithms each search engine uses to rank sites for relevance. Getting your company exposure organically is difficult but can be accomplished with some devotion. Search engines used to be keyword-focused, meaning the number of times “Used furniture Seattle” appeared on your site would determine your page rank. Today, the ranking system is based on the frequency of updates to the site and if it is optimized for mobile phones. This is why when searching for a small business website,

you will often see that business’s Facebook page ranked above their homepage. This is often because they are far more active on their social media sites and perhaps have not updated their business webpage in months or sometimes years. Businesses can tie social media feeds into their homepage, update photos and include blogs or articles and various other content which will all help increase the ranking organically. Email marketing is a way to reach a large number of consumers with the same message without the costs of printing and postage in traditional direct mail marketing. Traditional direct mail allows you to choose specific postal routes that have a general income level and household demographics, but email marketing

PROGRESSIVE can get much more specific. The platform that Living Local 360 utilizes gives us access to over 90 million email addresses. We then break these down into the city or area the client wants to target. From there we can narrow the field even further based on income level, gender, size of family, interests, college education level and many more categories. Data from an email campaign will show you exactly how many inboxes the message was delivered to, how many opened the email, and how many interacted with an offer inside the email. This gives you a real-time cost analysis on what it costs

of news content followed by twelve minutes of commercials, would you pay any attention to that or would you change the channel? The same applies to radio. Stations need to make money through advertisers, but they also need consumers to consume the media around which the advertisers have spent their money. With all the new opportunities seemingly appearing every month with digital, it will be easy for companies to over saturate and frustrate potential customers. But as with other mediums, digital will eventually balance out the right amount of ads per experience.

per impression (person seeing your message) and lead (person accepting your offer or showing interest). These platforms also contain physical addresses so you can narrow down direct mail follow-up pieces and send those only to consumers who have shown interest in your product, saving you money and knowing you are targeting only warm and hot leads. A more recent trend that you’ve probably noticed is retargeted IP (Internet Protocol) advertising. For example, you go to amazon. com to look for a new digital camera. You leave the site without purchasing an item and go next to CNN.com or ESPN.com and low and behold, there’s a side banner ad with the products you were just looking at. This is also common on social media sites if you have been discussing products through posts. Retailers are able to follow your web visit history using your IP address. New websites are now formatted with a blank ad space that companies can purchase and use the information they have gathered on your interests and retarget an ad tailored specifically to your search. This will become more and more popular with small business as they will be able to effectively buy space on some of the most popular national websites without having to fork over a huge amount of money to the site itself and reach consumers not in your target area.

THE PLATFORM THAT LIVING LOCAL 360 UTILIZES GIVES US ACCESS TO OVER 90 MILLION EMAIL ADDRESSES. WE THEN BREAK THESE DOWN INTO THE CITY OR AREA THE CLIENT WANTS TO TARGET.

Much like other mediums, there is a balance between reaching your consumer effectively and overwhelming them with ads to the point of discontent with your brand. If you sat down to watch the evening news and got five minutes

One unique way to accomplish this is through digital content marketing. Digital content marketing starts with really rich content that people actually care about – including killer images. Then it’s delivering that content when and where your customers want it in hopes they like it and tell all their friends and followers. Building trust in your brand is key to growth, and a referral of your product or service from a trusted friend or family member is the golden ticket of marketing. Making sure readers can see the article on a device that they use every day, especially the one attached to their hip, is vital. But above all, don’t overwhelm people with your sales pitch. Keep it simple and teach them something so they consider you a valuable resource not just a company pushing product. The unique thing about marketing through digital channels is that it goes way beyond messaging. Given all the ways brands can connect with consumers online, whether in

Reaching customers on the devices that are in front of their face from the time their alarm goes off in the morning to the last status updated before bed is paramount in staying competitive in the digital age. social environments, via mobile apps, paid media or blogs, each interaction leaves an impression of your brand. So in many respects, digital is marketing. So how does one get started in the digital world? If you have a homepage for your business, you’ve already started. If you don’t, it’s really about time! Typically local business websites don’t have to go into great length. Your company’s contact information and location, a little background on the company, and the products and services you offer give people what they need to know. Your professional website gives an impression that you are a legitimate business. Many consumers, including middle-aged men and women, are interacting more and more with social media. Have your page include fun content, “friends only” offers, events you’re hosting, sales, or partnerships with the community you

support. Again, the frequency of posting will help your social media sites and feeds remain relevant; stagnant pages will disappear from most consumers’ news feeds. Most businesses can handle these platforms without being overwhelmed, but if you’re ready to take the next step in reaching your digital audience it’s best to seek out a professional company whose expertise is in this field. You wouldn’t have your plumber fix your computer and the same applies to your marketing efforts – find an expert you can trust. Digital marketing is another platform to get your brand and message in front of your audience. The great advantages to digital is the ability to track exactly how many times that message is being seen and make adjustments to not only where the message is seen but perhaps the message itself. Your digital ad might not be performing as you had hoped, but if you make

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

68

the change from a 1-800 number to a local number on the ad, you will be able to track and see if it’s the message that needed changing, not the medium. We are tied to our phones and tablets, and it doesn’t look like that will be ending anytime soon. Reaching customers on the devices that are in front of their face from the time their alarm goes off in the morning to the last status updated before bed is paramount in staying competitive in the digital age. Savvy marketers are already looking for what’s coming next. Nothing will remain as it is as technology continues to expand. The digital world is here and your consumer is living in it all day. Time to go say hello!

SHOP IN STYLE

Spruce Up Your Spring Look ACCESSORIZE AND COLOR COORDINATE

BY MICHELLE PHILLIPS

SPRING IS JUST AROUND the corner, and it is time to start thinking about putting away your heavier sweaters, coats and winter scarves. It is much easier to transition by having these items out of your main closet. Each season simply take a huge plastic tub and fold these items away to lighten your closet. This is also a great time to purge. Consider each item carefully – some pieces are great crossover items for the cool evenings, but some are just too heavy to keep in your spring and summer collections. Any items not worn last season should be donated. The chances of wearing those items next year are slim. All denim, leggings, lighter weight jackets and sweaters can be kept in your spring and summer closet.

Be sure to include a pair of capri leggings that complement sundresses, long tees and tunics.

Now consider what you may be missing that will bring your look up-to-date. Be sure to look at shoe trends and add a few new pairs – perhaps a new pair of brightly colored Nikes to inspire your workout, or a pair of sparkly flip-flops or tall wedges that elongate legs but are still comfortable and easy to walk in. Next look at your basics – are your leggings looking tired and faded? If so, toss them and add a few new pairs. Be sure to include a pair

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

of capri leggings that complement sundresses, long tees and tunics. Tees by Tina are our favorite basics and will pair nicely with any of your layering pieces. Choose a signature color for all of your accessories. This keeps your look consistent and makes packing for trips a snap! Choose a coral or other bright color for a sun-kissed look, or make your signature hue your eye color so that your eyes really stand out. Next choose your signature handbag for the season. Perhaps last year’s will work, but you may want to choose something on-trend to create that fresh and fun look! Fashion magazines are showing woven and basket handbags as summer’s bag of choice. Now is also the perfect time to visit a local makeup artist to freshen up your makeup routine. Techniques, colors and quality change rapidly in the cosmetic market, so consider an update each spring and fall. Happy Spring! HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

Step One

YOU DON’T NEED TO GET IN SHAPE TO GET IN SHAPE

BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR

SO HERE WE ARE at that time of the year again. The interim space after the failed New Year’s resolution of getting healthy and the planning of bathing suit season. You feel like you still have time to NOT start your exercise and diet regime with enough chronological wiggle room to lose a few pounds before it gets warmer outside. Maybe you’ll start going to the gym, but only after you figure out how to get into enough shape to not embarrass yourself at the gym. And there continues the cycle of failure. Why do people think they should get into shape to get into shape? This makes no rational sense, yet I hear it close to every day. This is

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

the opposite of a good idea my dear friends. Not having adequate strength and endurance is not a productive reason to put off a training program. Who’s to say what level you should be at to begin? You go to a training program to GAIN strength, endurance, mobility, and stability; not to show how much you already have. Going to a fitness class isn’t about the physical caliber of the people around you; it’s about supporting those people in their goals and them supporting you in yours. Most of the time I am fixing poor movement patterns on people, I’m not putting them on display to prove anything, ever. I am looking for your progress, not perfection.

Did you realize tooth decay could be found before the pain comes? X-rays aren’t the only way to see what lies beneath your filling! Rhonda Savage, DDS and Uptown Dental introduce The Canary System; painless, safe pulses of laser light that can find decay in five seconds. With The Canary System, Dr. Savage may be able to halt or even reverse decay in its earliest stages. RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS

The intimidation people feel towards group training is unfortunate. I love seeing the camaraderie of perfect strangers when they are in a physically challenging environment. If you feel like you are in a competition you didn’t sign up for and you just want to get healthy and feel great about yourself, then that’s exactly what you should look for. I believe that competition has no place in a training environment. That’s not to say we can’t work for specific strength goals to later put to the test in a fun and family style competition, but the daily practice of strength is no place for competition. You should never feel like you failed a workout. A workout or training session is about moving your body through space in all ranges of motion, on all planes, both loaded and unloaded. You need to figure out if you have any dysfunctional movement patterns. If so, address them and then begin to add complexity and load to these movements. There is nothing like the feeling of getting both mentally and physically stronger and more fit. When you walk into a fitness center, studio or gym, you should feel welcome, not like an outsider. Go to the gym to create your goals with a qualified professional or instructor. It should not hurt to go to the gym. Find a

program where you can lift heavy to prevent injury instead of inducing it. Where you can test your limits without testing your good sense. Make sure if you have questions, you ask them. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. As health, strength and fitness professionals, we work for you, the client. It is our job to make sure you move towards and hopefully accomplish YOUR goals – not put you into a workout that is one size fits all. Chances are, you will feel like the exception of that one size. Make sure that whatever you decide to do, you believe in it! There are many reasons to start a fitness program. You want to lose weight, you want to get stronger, you want to feel better, you want to look better, you might be depressed, lonely or tired. The reasons are endless. Don’t be afraid to start, be afraid not to. In order for your life to change, you have to change your life. Don’t wait for a feeling, an opportunity or a sign. This is the time to jump. No more waiting or conditional excuses. All of us have different goals, genes, body types, limitations, tastes and dislikes. There is no cookie cutter mold that works for everyone, but everyone has the ability to realize their undeniable potential. Results or excuses – you decide!

Women and Cavities

LLC

CAN HORMONES BE CAUSING CAVITIES? BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS YESTERDAY, SUSAN complained to me, “I floss, I brush, I do everything! My husband does nothing. But I get all the cavities!” I hear this daily. I also hear this from dental audiences as I lecture throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and Bangkok. Current research doesn’t yet support my hypothesis, but let’s think about women’s health for a minute. Women are more prone to autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Sjogren’s disease, lupus and more. Alcohol affects women differently than men, and it’s more difficult for women to quit smoking than a man. What about cavities? Do you get more decay, but feel you make more of an effort than your partner? You’re not alone. What can you do? Be Very Proactive Diet: Avoid carbohydrates, including wine. Anything high in sugar, on a repeated basis, can cause more cavities. (You don’t have to give up the wine or chocolate; it’s the frequency that counts.) Have it, be done with it, versus prolonged sipping or snacking into the evening. Acid reflux: Acid causes more decay. Bacteria love an acid environment. Don’t brush after an acid attack. Rinse with warm water and a small amount of baking soda to neutralize the acid, and don’t brush for 30 minutes.

Xylitol toothpaste: Xylitol is a natural plant product, shown to be effective in reducing bacteria that cause decay. Xylitol gum and candy are great; I like Spry gum (available from a dental office) and Ice Chips (a xylitolbased candy). But beware; it takes time for the body to get used to it and too much xylitol can cause intestinal gas! Xylitol is a good preventive product, but if you have gum recession, periodontal disease, a history of cavities, early cavities, or a lot of restorative dental work in your mouth, I believe you need more than xylitol.

New Patients Only Botox at $9 a Unit

Prescription fluoride toothpaste: Not everyone is in favor of fluoride, and I respect the patient’s right to choose. PreviDent 5000 is one of the best products on the market. It does require a prescription and is easy to use. Essential oils: As a preventive measure, essential oils can make a difference, but once a cavity reaches a certain point, essential oils and xylitol don’t make a difference. One last thing: Most patients don’t realize that a cavity doesn’t hurt until it gets near the nerve. At this point, you’re into more tooth loss and a higher investment to restore the tooth. Prevention does matter. Take care of cavities while they’re early; you’ll save money and time in the dental chair.

Flossing is the gold standard of the dental world. However, what good is this standard if few do it and many who do floss don’t floss well? Or, perhaps you’re an avid flosser, but have large spaces between your teeth? Floss may not be enough. I recommend the Philips Sonicare AirFloss for my patients. Now in its third generation, Philips can claim the same efficacy as flossing. It’s easy to use and patients love it!

Visualize Success FROM PROBLEM SOLVING TO CREATING SOLUTIONS BY IAN CHITTLE, M.S., LMHC, HARBOR WELLBEING

A COMMON APPROACH to shifting our health habits is to focus on why a problem exists. We sit with family, a friend or counselor and discuss our struggles, finding explanations for why they came about, with the hope that greater understanding will prevent us from making the same mistakes or unhealthy choices. If problems were like seeds in the garden, we water them with our constant thoughts and attention until they grow into a huge weed. Unfortunately, better understanding of our problems does not automatically lead to the change we seek for better health and well-being. While there is great benefit in understanding the complexity of our problems, we sometimes need a break from rehashing old problem stories in order to actively visualize and create the future that we want. This approach, in therapeutic terms, is Solution Focused Therapy. For example, someone struggling with chronic illness like type 2 diabetes or depression often find personal faults that they believe contribute to their disease – characteristics such as lack of willpower, low motivation, food addiction or laziness. The focus on these internal problems can leave us feeling even more hopeless. In contrast, imagine approaching our problems in a new way. Envision taking a break from a focus on these problems and instead focus on creating solutions. Here are three examples of solution-focused strategies: Visualize success Many of the most successful athletes spend their mental energy before games visualizing their success in great detail. When it comes to implementing diet and lifestyle change that

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

helps treat and prevent chronic illness, we can use the tricks of these successful athletes by visualizing a day in which we eat healthy foods that we enjoy and engage in a type of activity we enjoy. Focus on your unique strengths and talents Think of a time that you really succeeded or felt proud of an accomplishment, like running a race, a project at work, or helping someone in need. What internal characteristic, strengths and talents helped you succeed? Discover hidden solutions that already exist in your life We all have exceptions to our problems, when problems are “dialed down” or not occurring. These exceptions often go unnoticed without our time or attention looking for them. We can amplify these exceptions with small, highly achievable goals, until our healthy exceptions become our normal habits. As we “get the ball rolling” with small solutions, like a short morning walk or a home-cooked meal, confidence grows and the initial visualization becomes reality. Try it out for yourself! Close your eyes and imagine going to sleep tonight and one of your problems is solved (i.e. you no longer have type 2 diabetes). You have no idea the problem is solved because you were asleep when this miracle happened. When you wake up in the morning, how will you notice that a miracle has happened and your problem is solved? What will be different? How will you feel different? What will you do differently? Who will notice and what will they notice different about you? How will that person act differently? What else will be different throughout your day? thechittlehomestead/ianchittle

Spring Cleaning Your Marriage RENEW YOUR RELATIONSHIP DURING THE SEASON OF HOPE BY JOY PETERSON, M.A. LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST. AUTHOR OF “22 MYTHS OF DIVORCE” AND “DISCOVERING A DYNAMIC MARRIAGE” DISCOVERINGDYNAMICMARRIAGE.COM MARCH PROMISES renewal and hope. So how about “spring cleaning” your marriage? During the courtship, lovers talk about dreams and visions of future careers and success, but few discuss moral, ethical, spiritual, financial and lifestyle values. Shared values form the bedrock of a successful marriage. Exploring and Adopting Values. For example, regarding honesty, is it merely telling the truth? Does honesty apply to tax returns? Secretly stashing funds? Concealing purchases? Hiding raises or bonuses? Hiding compulsions or addictions? What does honesty mean in your values? Is honesty or integrity your goal? Is there a difference? Examine the values you hold as standards of conduct. Learn to collaborate rather than compromise. Collaboration seeks to create something new and distinctive in resolving conflicting goals, ideas or beliefs. Fidelity. Fidelity is where transparency and integrity demands higher standard than honesty. Does fidelity exclude pornography? Sexting? Sharing secrets with friends of the opposite sex? Establish your standards and boundaries. Trust. Deep emotional connection requires trust. Inability to control anger, stress, moods or behavior undermines trust. Accepting responsibility for consequences of choices is maturity.

feeling that a spouse is picking up on makes them feel crazy and in a double bind; do I trust my partner or my intuition? Transparency. In risking rejection by revealing fears, dreams, faults, failures, and inadequacies, you discover if you are loved unconditionally. Secrets vs. Personal Privacy. Do I have to give up all privacy to be in a committed relationship? What is the line between personal privacy and a secret that threatens relationship? There’s a simple guideline to honesty and fairness —the Golden Rule!

It’s not the good life, it’s the best life!

Welcome home to Harbor Place!

Autonomy and Self-awareness. Honesty demands courage and self-awareness. If you expect honesty from others you must be scrupulously honest with yourself.

From morning to night, you’ve got friends to meet up with, activities to share and a beautiful environment around you.

Personal Integrity. Real intimacy demands honesty beyond mere truth-telling. Be true to yourself. Grow up and confront insecurities and self-deception.

From fine dining, to sunny courtyard lunches, our chef prepares meals meant to be savored.

Money. Is how money is earned or spent less important than what money represents for you? Is it a means to an end or an end in itself? How much time and energy will you invest in acquiring money and stuff? What will you sacrifice to have them?

Fairness. Trust requires an underpinning of justice and equality.

Healthy and Satisfying Sex. Intimacy is often confused with sex. Partners need to honestly express what priority sex is to them. Negotiate an agreement that satisfies sexual appetites and desires.

They’re Not Just For Summer A DELICIOUS AND WARM PEAR SALAD

A colorful mix of seasonal ingredients can keep you going strong until springtime.

THE CHILLY MONTHS can take a toll on our mental and physical health, but a colorful mix of seasonal ingredients can keep you going strong until springtime. Honey sweet roasted pears and tangy balsamic lentils are tossed with winter greens to make this simple and balanced meal, packed full of essential nutrients, including fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, folate and iron. “Combining the refreshing flavors of fruits and vegetables, this satisfying salad is soulwarming comfort food at its best,” says Kathy Stephenson, marketing communications director for USA Pears. “Roasted pears on a bed of greens with lentils capture the lively promise of springtime and the nourishment our bodies crave this time of year.” Serve salad warm. If you desire a little more richness, try topping the salad with long curls of parmesan cheese. Warm Winter Greens with Balsamic Lentils and Roasted Pears Ingredients: • 2 bunches of winter greens, washed, dried and torn into large pieces Lentils: • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 1 small sweet onion, cut into half rings • 1/2 teaspoon salt • freshly ground black pepper

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

82

• 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar • 3/4 cup brown lentils, rinsed • 1 cup cold water Roasted Pears: • 2 firm, ripe Anjou pears • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons honey • 6 to 8 sage leaves, torn Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare greens and transfer to large bowl. Place saucepan over medium heat. Once hot, add olive oil, onions, salt and pepper, and saute until onions begin to caramelize. Add vinegar to deglaze pan, stirring to pick up bits that may be stuck to the bottom. Cook until vinegar reduces and pan is nearly dry, about 3 minutes. Add lentils and water, cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 1518 minutes, or until lentils are al dente. Spread pears onto sheet pan. Stir olive oil and honey together and drizzle over pears. Add sage leaves, toss pears gently with mixture and transfer to oven. Roast pears for 12-15 minutes, or until just tender. When lentils are done, pour atop the winter greens while still hot. Using tongs, toss lentils and greens together until greens are softened and glossy. Transfer mixture to a clean bowl and drizzle with more olive oil. Top the warm salad with roasted pears and sage leaves. Serve immediately.

Southwest Montana

Where it all comes together By Colin Anderson

C

owboys, college kids, the ultra-wealthy, and the family caravan— all characters you’re likely to see on a visit to Bozeman, Montana. Originally a small ranching community, Bozeman continues to evolve and is now the central hub for visitors to Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky Resort and an expanding Montana State University. The combination of youth and retirees, city and country dwellers, and longtime residents alongside vacation homeowners has created a diverse destination rarely seen today. A stroll down Main will show you saloons that have stood for decades along with shops featuring upscale clothing and art. You’ll bump into wranglers and Stetsons, engineering students letting off steam, and travelers looking to flee their big city life for a week or so. The reason for each visit varies, but it’s easy to see how Bozeman’s tourism industry continues to grow and adapt to an ever increasing visitor population. Western Montana in general boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery and incredible outdoor experiences in the lower 48. Bozeman serves as home base for many planning to spend their trip in the great outdoors. Evidenced by the numerous fly shops that dot the town, trout fishing is a huge draw here. The Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone rivers all carry the blue ribbon designation for their water quality, public accessibility, native trout population and ability to handle fishing pressure. Serious anglers from all over the country put a float down one of these Montana legends as a fly fishing bucket list can’t miss. Very fortunate fishermen can land one of only a few yearly permits for a five-day float down the Smith River. During the 60-mile float, it’s rare to see another outfit giving visitors a truly alone-in-the-wild experience. Yellowstone National Park sits just 90 miles south of town and guests can enter the north end of the park through Gardner or the west entrance at West Yellowstone. Easily one of the most visited and popular National Parks in the country, a trip into Yellowstone will bring you up close and personal with wildlife, geothermal wonders, as well as spectacular bodies of water and mountain peaks. Yellowstone is one of the best places in the country to see the most famous animals of the West. Entering through Gardner, you are all but guaranteed to see herds of elk and some of the last native buffalo left in the West. While they may look like calm massive cows, every year overzealous picture takers get mauled by bison who feel threatened when people get too close. Don’t be that person. These 1,000-pound animals will often block the roadway, and provoking them or honking your horn does little to sway them into moving out of your way. Nature makes the rules and runs the show here.

Another common occurrence in the park is a traffic build up also known as a “bear jam.” Grizzly and black bears are often spotted right from the road, and as soon as they are seen, cars pull over and stack up to get a glimpse. This causes a headache for park staff, but the chance to see a grizzly in the wild is too much for most visitors to pass up and drive by. There is an average of one bear attack each year in the park, and most of those occur where visitors are out hiking and surprise a bear. Before going out on trips, park staff educates hikers on how to avoid surprising a bear and what to do if charged. Your odds of being attacked are extremely low, but having the knowledge of what to do beforehand could make all the difference. Across miles of hiking trails there are deer, moose, eagles, as well as the rarely seen bobcat, mountain lion and wolf pack. The other feature many visitors come to see is the majority of active geysers in the world. Old Faithful is the most popular, but many are surprised to learn that it does not erupt exactly every 60 minutes and isn’t even the most frequent erupting or largest geyser in the park; it is however the most consistent. There are more than 300 erupting geysers in Yellowstone making it the largest concentration in the world. If you can’t wait until your trip, the National Park Service has a constant live stream where you can watch the Old Faithful eruption (www.nps.gov/features/yell/webcam/oldFaithfulStreaming.html). This is truly a spectacular place and a trip through the park should not be missed. While summer brings outdoor hikers, bikers, fishermen and adventure seekers, winter brings visitors looking for light fluffy powder, steep terrain and an incredible ski experience. Locals take the 30-minute drive to Bridger Bowl ski area, famous for soft snow as well as some of the most challenging terrain around. Back country skiers hike to the very top for untouched powder and the thrill of leaping off cliffs and ledges. There are also miles of cross-

country skiing as well as snowshoeing trails. The more famous mountain, Big Sky, sits about an hour south of Bozeman and boasts one of the largest skiable mountains in North America. This is a true western resort experience with dozens of dining and onmountain lodging options. The gathering area seems more like a small downtown than a ski chalet. It would be a challenge to hit every run if you had a week, and if you aren’t a big fan of chairlifts, there is a run that’s six miles long that will take you plenty of time to traverse. Multi-million dollar homes are common throughout the area. Plans were laid to create a private ski mountain called The Yellowstone Club that encompassed nearby Moonlight Basin. However, the dream didn’t come to fruition and in 2013,

Moonlight became part of Big Sky Resort, creating over 7,600 acres of skiable terrain. If a more laid back stay is your style, there are plenty of options back in Bozeman, and the town is easy to navigate on foot. During the summer months, the downtown area puts on weekly art walks featuring the local galleries as well as ”Music on Main” which features live local bands, activities for kids, and plenty of food trucks serving up a variety of specialties. Pride from Montana State University shuts down Main Street in both the spring and fall for graduating senior sendoffs and fall homecoming parades and pep rallies. The annual Brawl of the Wild football game pits the Bobcats of Montana State against the Grizzlies of the University

of Montana. It’s been going on since 1897, and it’s easy to tell which side you’re on during Cat-Griz week. A melting pot of Old West and modern is what you’ll find on your visit to the greater Bozeman area. Luxurious options abound alongside beat up farm trucks. A passion for the outdoors is what drives visitors here and keeps locals from ever leaving the area. Big Sky country is a term not easily described until you’ve experienced it firsthand. Western Montana is the playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Even if you’re not the mountaineering type, you can experience all the beauty of this region through the window of your car or a short stroll off the beaten path.
