THE TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT THE AMERICAN DREAM 2.0

I POSE A QUESTION TO YOU: if we all look deeply into our hearts, what is the most important part about the place each of us calls “home? For me, home is about the relationships that are facilitated under my roof. Home is my family, my friends and connection to others. In other words, home is more about strong and loving relationships. The roof under which all this love and connection is possible is important. But the roof is not to be confused with the connections themselves. A Delightful Way to Downsize About five years ago, I came across the tiny house movement and have been a fervent enthusiast ever since. Since I was first introduced to the idea of living large in a small space, several companies that build tiny homes have made a name for themselves. For example, a company named Tumbleweed Homes manufactures a beautiful home that

is only 163 square feet. Contained within 163 square feet buyers will find a bathroom with toilet and shower and a kitchen with refrigerator, stove, and microwave. The home also contains a living room, a small bedroom and a sleeping loft upstairs. Tumbleweed’s Homes are built with the ability to easily go off the grid. Buyers can fit them with solar panels, rainwater collectors and composting toilets. However, I freely admit that most families like mine would have a very difficult time packing their entire lives into 163 square feet. Fortunately, most tiny homes companies have much larger options. I have seen some tiny homes that are closer to 1,000 square feet. The key is these homes are built to maximize every inch of space within them. But more importantly, these homes are affordable, and they cater to those who do not want to be saddled with a 30-year mortgage. For most of us with young families, the largest expense in our budget is usually the mortgage. Tiny homes provide a viable alternative to overextending one’s monthly budget. These homes provide an opportunity to own a home free and clear, which has the potential to create more financial security for families. PHOTOS THIS PAGE COURTESY INHABITAT.COM

affordable adaptable alternative housing We all take for granted the signs we pass everyday. Our minds accept them as old information and typically will not reprocess them without redirecting our focus. An Idea You Can Bank On Who purchases tiny homes and what do their lives look like? • Two out of five tiny home owners are over 50 years of age • Tiny home owners are twice as likely to have a Master’s degree • Around 70 percent of tiny home owners have no mortgage • 90 percent of tiny home owners have less credit card debt than the average American • The average cost to build a tiny home is only $23,000 Living authentically and affordably does not mean that we also must settle for less. While we might need to readjust our expectations in order to make a transition to a tiny home, it can be done. When we live authentically, we are not settling for less since it is our relationships that nurture us. As long as family and friends surround us, we are already living the American dream.

THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME is what provides the first impression to any visitors. Whether those visitors are guests, family or potential buyers, the curb appeal is where it’s at and what sets the mood for getting them in the door. Real estate agents will tell you that buyers make their decision within a few seconds of pulling into the driveway of a potential home. If they don’t like what they see outside, they may not even opt to check out what’s inside. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” does not apply to homes!

It’s true—I look on Zillow every morning for new listings and potential houses. I can look at the first picture and scroll right past if it doesn’t have the right curb appeal. Everyone is different and looks for what’s important to them, but we can all agree on a few things that help with the outward appearance of a home. First, it should be decluttered. The lawn can’t have a collection of concrete statues, old cars or waist-high weeds. Your guests shouldn’t need to wind their way through your collectibles to get to your front door. Keep your lawn and flower beds well-manicured. It shows that you take pride in your possessions. The paint should still be protecting the siding, eaves and soffits of your home. If there is paint peeling, chipping or faded, it’s not doing the job and it’s time for a touchup. Most of the time, this means painting

A few items rank high on the list of return on investment (ROI) for the exterior of your home. One idea is adding stone elements to the exterior of your home. This may mean replacing vinyl with manufactured or cultured stone or adding stone to the lower half of any bump-outs or cantilevered areas. Another hot spot is the garage doors. Most of the time this is because the garage doors face the drive, and it’s what people see as they approach your home. The front door is also something that can make a great first impression. There are lots of options for these, and elements such as glass panels or textured finishes can add a lot, especially when paired with the stone accents and a new garage door! The average ROI for garage and entry doors is 91 percent, so you can splurge on these knowing that you will get most of your money back if you should choose to sell your home. With spring right around the corner, now is the time to start planning those projects. You should also think about fixing up those outdoor entertainment spaces. Last summer I wrote an article on how to create fire pits, outdoor sitting areas and exterior entertainment spaces. Bringing elements of the indoors to the outside with these focal points provides a much larger entertainment space. It’s a space that’s open, roomy, full of fresh air and provides a setting where people tend to be more relaxed. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for summer to get here so I can be outside and be more relaxed. HEY, Mother Nature, hurry up with this spring thing and bring on the summer sunshine!

FINANCIAL FOCUS TIME FOR SOME FINANCIAL SPRING CLEANING

Make Your Financial Future a Priority.

ARTICLE PROVIDED BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY FINANCIAL ADVISOR ERIN ABRIGO OF GIG HARBOR

C O N S O L I D AT E SPRING IS IN THE AIR, even if it’s not quite there on the calendar. This year, as you shake off the cobwebs from winter and start tidying up around your home and yard, why not also do some financial spring cleaning? Actually, you can apply several traditional spring cleaning techniques to your financial situation. Here are a few ideas: Look for damage. Damage to your home’s siding, shingles and foundation can eventually degrade the structure of your home. Your investment portfolio is also a structure of a sort, and it, too, can be damaged. Specifically, you may have deliberately constructed your portfolio with an investment mix – stocks, fixed-income vehicles, cash instruments, etc. – that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. But over time, your portfolio can evolve in unexpected ways. For example, your stocks may have grown so much in value that they now take up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had intended, possibly subjecting you to a higher degree of risk. If this happens, you may need to rebalance your portfolio. Get rid of “clutter.” As you look around your home, do you see three mops or four nonfunctional televisions or a stack of magazines from the 1990s? If these items no longer have value, you could get rid of them and clear up some living space. As an investor, you also might have “clutter” – in the form of investments that no longer meet your needs. If you sold these investments, you could use the proceeds to fill gaps in your portfolio.

working on your outdoor tasks, you might find it more efficient to have all these items in one location. You could also have your investments scattered about – an IRA here, a new 401(k) there, and an older 401(k) someplace else. But if you consolidated all your investments in one place, you might cut down on paperwork and fees, and you wouldn’t risk losing track of an asset (which actually happens more than you might think). Even more importantly, when you have all your investments with one provider, you’ll be better positioned to follow a single, centralized investment strategy. Prepare for a rainy day. As part of your outdoor spring cleaning, you may want to look at your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear and in good repair, so that they can move rainwater away from your home. Your financial goals need protection, too, so you’ll want to ensure you have adequate life and disability insurance. Seal leaks. In your home inspection this spring, you may want to investigate doors and windows for leaks and drafts. Your investment portfolio might have some “leaks” also. Are investment-related taxes siphoning off more of your earnings than you realize? A financial professional can offer you recommendations for appropriate taxadvantaged investments. This spring, when you’re cleaning your physical surroundings, take some time to also tidy up your financial environment. You may be pleased with the results.

Consolidate. Do you keep your lawnmower in a shed, a rake in your garage, and your gardening tools in the basement? When

THERE’S AN AGE-OLD RIDDLE, “What’s the most active day of the year?” Answer: March 4th. March has the command to move forward built into its name. This is the month to move forward. This is the month to build your “Momentum Mindset.”

creating more certainty? It is a dynamic process that often includes detours. The Northwest offers many hiking trails that gain altitude and act as a powerful metaphor for the twists and turns that arise as we move toward our vision. Imagine your 2017 vision as a hike to the top of a steep trail with a beautiful panoramic view. You love the picture of that view hanging on your wall, and you imagine what it would be like to stand on top with the wind in your hair taking your own photograph of that view, but you’ve never been on the trail before. In fact, you’re rather new to hiking. Until you’re on the trail and feel the stability of your boots beneath your feet, the response of your muscles, the depth of your breath and use your navigational skills, it only lives in your imagination. Once you’re on the trail, you learn things about hiking and about yourself you simply couldn’t know from looking at the picture.

Momentum requires staying focused on your outcome. The more activities you direct toward your goal, the more likely it is you’ll get there. And the fewer detours you take, the more quickly you’ll arrive. Nevertheless, the destination isn’t always clear, and the next step isn’t always obvious. We live in a busy world where it’s easy to get sidetracked and become distracted. The first step to a momentum mindset is a clear vision, which can be rather elusive since it can shift as you move toward it. How clear is your 2017 vision? As you move forward, is it becoming clearer? Are you beginning to experience parts of your vision? Are your steps forward

CLEAR VISION

Unleash Your Potential The first step to a momentum mindset is a clear vision, which can be rather elusive since it can shift as you move toward it.

The second step is to prepare. You buy the gear and build your endurance. The desire to stand on the summit draws you, and the day comes when you load your gear in the car and drive to the trailhead. You set out with gusto, only to realize that much of your trip involves leaning into the hill and taking the next step up. Your primary view is your boots, dirt, trees and a few features on either side of the trail. Your experience is nothing like the photo from the summit that hangs on your wall. You dig deep for the type of discipline required to take another step when you’re tired and all you see is dirt. Discipline is the third step. As you come around a bend, you’re greeted with an opening in the trees and a vista that takes your breath away. As you savor the moment, you realize, “Though you’re not standing on top, this is what it looks like on the way.” The tiredness in your body vaporizes as does the memory of all of those steps looking at your boots and the dirt. You smile, delighted with where you are in the moment, and you get a second wind – both physically and mentally. Now you’re eager to press forward. Your momentum mindset just kicked in. Take these steps to build your momentum mindset and soon you will be reaching your goals and vision in both your personal and professional life.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

AN EASTER TRADITION

Join the fun at the annual Easter Egg Hunt. By Patty Hutchens.

IT’S A LONGSTANDING TRADITION and one that kids of all ages look forward to each year—the PenMet Parks annual Spring Easter Egg Hunt. As part of its vision of enhancing the quality of life on the Gig Harbor Peninsula by providing park and recreational activities for all in the community, PenMet Parks offers this wonderful tradition year after year for families.

the Easter holiday, few may know exactly about how this tradition came to be, so here is a little history for you. In pre-Christian times, the egg was a symbol of the rebirth of the earth during spring time. Early Christians took this one step further and saw the egg as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, likening it to the tomb from which Christ rose, hence the name “Easter egg.”

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, April15, 2017 from noon to 2pm at Sehmel Homestead Park. The event is free, with a suggested donation of $2 per child. The Spring Easter Egg Hunt runs throughout the two-hour event so every child is guaranteed a chance to find eggs and win a great prize.

The actual Easter egg hunt is traced back to Martin Luther. It is reported that he held Easter egg hunts where the men hid eggs for the women and children to find, and the tradition has spread throughout the world. Don’t miss out on this fun event! Mark your calendars for April 15 and get ready to enjoy an afternoon with friends and family. Thank you PenMet Parks for continuing to enhance the lives of those in our community!

Egg hunts are divided into small age groups for children up to fifth grade. Families will have the chance to visit with the Easter Bunny and enjoy other spring activities during the festivities. While we all know that Easter egg hunts are a tradition associated with

The Peninsula School District is the owner/ operator of the station and gives students one of the best hands-on experiences in learning the ins and outs of broadcasting. Former student Alex Benzegala just landed a play-byplay radio job on the east coast, something that makes Abersold smile.

AS WITH ANY GOOD BUSINESS, community radio KGHP is constantly adapting to what its consumers want from a local radio station. Long known as the go-to source for impactful news and information specific to the Lower Sound area, the nonprofit made some incredible achievements in 2016 and hopes to continue that success in 2017. Internet streaming has allowed the station to reach listeners all over the globe, and volunteer DJ Ed Brook’s radio segment is now nationally syndicated and being broadcast coast to coast. KGHP picked up the Nonprofit of the Year award from the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce and has introduced a new segment, “Professional Spotlight,” where local professionals are interviewed about their work and ties to the community. The station now live streams video of football and basketball games to go along with its radio broadcasts of high school events. “KGHP-FM’s goals going into the New Year are much of the same as our continued mission— to provide quality broadcasting entertainment to our community, as well as offer a real world work environment to our students who utilize the radio station to learn the broadcasting arts,” said Station Manager Spencer Abersold.

“He had a dream to become a sports broadcaster; we gave him the opportunity to do our sports coverage despite his speech issue. We are very proud of Alex and all the things he has had to overcome, and all his success. And we are proud to be a small part of his start into the broadcasting world,” said Abersold. No matter what time of day you tune in, you will hear something different than that of the giant commercial stations that seem to play the same 40 songs on repeat. KGHP’s library of music contains 23,000 songs and is continually expanding. “DJ Mike Kelly who also serves as the boys and girls swim coach at Gig Harbor High School has a show called ‘Kelly’s Heroes,’ which is now listed as the longest running reggae show in America,” said Abersold. Harbor Chat, Blue’s Streak, and the morning mix are among the most popular programming. Under its nonprofit designation, KGHP is not allowed to run commercial advertising and instead gets the bulk of its operational funding from community businesses that sponsor the station through monetary donations. In turn, the station makes daily mentions of its sponsors, giving local businesses great exposure.

“The more community based businesses that sign up to publicly support our station, the more integrated we become to our community and its needs,” said Abersold. “For less than two dollars a day a business can get their message out a guaranteed six times a day on our air waves.” Since its first broadcast in 1988, KGHP has maintained its commitment to important local information and a variety of unique content. A diverse group of volunteers helps keep the station going and provides unique entertainment on the airwaves. “The staff, volunteers and students are all grateful to the community for supporting and sponsoring this radio station. We understand our role and service to the community and are honored and humbled to be given this responsibility and opportunity to serve you,” said Abersold.

Good News

Proud Immigrant Roots

I FOUND COMFORT IN KNOWING that Dad’s hospice was a veritable “stone’s throw” from Puget Sound—in a location that strongly resembled his fjord birthplace of Rognan, Norway. I imagine his soul flew home over familiar glimpses of saltwater. Though I doubt that Dad knew it, our town was the natural place for an immigrant to settle.

Gig Harbor’s growing heritage

In 1867 Swedish fisherman, Samuel Jerisich, arrived in Gig Harbor. It marked the start of a wave of migrants. Just over 50 years later, Johnny Finholm, the son of folks originally from Finland, bought what became known as Finholm’s Market.

IN 1867 SWEDISH FISHERMAN, SAMUEL JERISICH, ARRIVED IN GIG HARBOR. IT MARKED THE START OF A WAVE OF MIGRANTS.

Our hamlet is still blessed with new Americans. Here is a taste of their stories: English Orator If you’ve ever attended one of the Y’s morning classes, you may have met a fit, former rugger. If you were really fortunate, you heard him preach— eloquently and from the heart—at Chapel Hill Presbyterian. In July of 2011, Ellis and Rachel White arrived in Washington. Here the couple found an unexpected challenge: the language. Dark-haired Ellis cheerfully recounts, “American English is communicated in a very different way than British English…I often speak publicly, and I’ve had crowds staring in puzzlement as I’ve used words or phrases that have no equivalent here.” Though the family, now with little ones Evelyn and Ezra, miss relatives in Britain, they love the USA. “We’ve experienced generosity here beyond anything we’ve seen in the UK. And the desire to achieve great things, and be willing to fight for [them], is much stronger in the U.S.” Renaissance Gentleman Ecuadorian Juan Cumbal has the shoulder-length hair of a musician and

the gentleness of a poet. In the late 90s, Juan played music for American tourists. Just before closing time, a Washingtonian named Nina dropped in to listen. A conversation became a courtship. And the courtship became a union. Cumbal recently grinned while exclaiming, “Everything is so perfect…and so clean!” in the States. Though Juan’s sonorous music often hovers over Bremerton, he works in Gig Harbor. Here Cumbal helps fellow immigrants Marco Toctaquiza (el Jefe) and Silvia RamundoLopez care for a school.

Super Mom

“Professor”

Though I don’t have a plethora of information about humble Silvia, I do know this. Born in Mexico, she spends six-plus days a week earning money to send home to her precious familia. And she takes amazing care of her daughter, Alejandra.

Though the personality trait that I most associate with Iliana Nicholas—teacher at Lighthouse Christian School—is her lilting laugh, her childhood story is anything but jolly.

When Raymundo-Lopez speaks about her teen, her bright, brown eyes sparkle with joy— especially when discussing classy Alejandra’s recent quinceañera. Though another Gig Harbor mother equally cherishes her children—she’s new to parenting.

Nicholas recalls the way her mom wept while saying goodbye—perhaps forever—to relatives. The possibility of still “playing with cousins and the closeness of family and friends,” disappeared in the aircraft’s contrails.

Cordial Kiwi

“We left Cuba with only the clothes on our backs and the hope of freedom. We arrived in New York on a chilly February evening in 1973.”

Natasha Lukan lived in Australia. Despite the warm surf of the Gold Coast, something was missing—her future husband. Thankfully, she met Troi Cockayne online.

Ensuing years saw Iliana marry a kind man and raise sweet children, while teaching a generation of students the beauty of her native language.

After a truly long-distance relationship, Lukan arrived in Washington through a fiancé visa. Two days after her flight touched down, wedding bells rang out.

If Nicholas’ tale made my heart thump with compassion, the final interviewee repeatedly made me pause in awe.

Mrs. Cockayne happily asserts, “I am now stepmother to three beautiful children and wife to the most amazing man of God and gifted sculptor.” (www.kingsgallery.net) While Natasha formerly taught piano, her fellow Harborite instructs full-time.

Running Man Most locals know Miguel Galeana and his bride, Alexa, from their stellar running store or their helpful work with athletes of all ages, (www.route16runwalk.com). Fit and compact, Galena recounts, “In the late 1970s my father traveled [to America] via the

desert plains. My mother left a year later. She was the only female amongst many men and had the terrible task of inching, underground, through a half-mile of filthy, rat-infested waters. That tunnel got smaller as she wriggled further into it. My mother still speaks about how thinking about us children kept her going. I am very fond of my mother.” While his mom and dad prepared a new life in the Northwest, grandparents looked after their grandchildren—Miguel, José, Mari and Luis—in Mexico. One day, friends escorted the youngsters to the border. Soft-spoken Galeana continues the tale: “I vividly remember… getting stuck on barb wire while crossing the fence… [the] back of my shirt got caught so I dangled until someone freed me. We had no understanding of English.” Upon reaching Washington, Miquel recounts “I remember hugging my [parents]. My little brother cried out for mom [because he] didn’t recognize her. It was an adventure learning how to become Americans.” Norwegians, Swedes, Croatians and Finns, British, Australians, Ecuadorians, Mexicans and many others. We are all immigrants. We are Gig Harbor.

W h at ’s SUP? Paddle board popularity in the Harbor By Colin Anderson GigHarborLivingLocal.com

MANY OF US HAVE hobbies. It can be collecting, antiquing, creating crafts or art. For others, it’s cooking, mixology, travel or outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing or skiing. Hobbies are something we enjoy during our downtime away from work as a way to relax and let our minds run away from the stresses of day-to-day life. We often discover these things through our parents, spouses or family friends, and often what begins as a simple hobby, becomes a major influence on our lives. For Gig Harbor resident Laura Jane (LJ) Brougher, paddle boarding is no longer just a hobby, but a way of life. “I have always been an avid water sports girl. I grew up playing at the beach and in the waves of Southern California,” recalled Brougher, who has been living in Gig Harbor for nearly 30 years and witnessed her first stand up paddleboard race about eight years ago. It wasn’t long after that she purchased her first board and got the hang of this emerging sport. For those unfamiliar, stand up paddle boarding, or SUP, is an activity for all ages. Riders utilize a board similar in shape to a surfboard, but often longer and more stable. You place yourself standing up in an athletic stance facing forward towards the tip of the board and utilize a long paddle to maneuver in any direction. SUPs are used to ride waves and surf, paddle flat lakes

time, there are few better places to learn than right in the center of our community. “The most popular place to SUP is the harbor because it is safe and protected from current and waves. I paddle every single day, mostly on the east side of Gig Harbor in the winter, at sunrise. Any area that you can step into the water you can go SUP,” said Brougher. As a registered nurse working in the field of anti-aging, Brougher utilizes much of her time outside of work to partner with the Gig Harbor Paddle Sports Shop to bring more attention to the sport. She is currently on a “Paddle Quest 365” in which she will paddle every single day for a year no matter what. “I am currently on day 91 today. 91 days in a row! I have paddled through temps as low as 17 degrees with a wind chill, pouring rain, slushing snow, wind....oh cold, biting wind, and still have loved every single second. I love it!” Renting a board is an easy way to try before you buy. There are several companies along the Harbor that rent including Gig Harbor Paddle Sports Shop which will be renting off Jerisich Park dock. When it comes to purchasing the equipment, much like other outdoor activities, price varies depending on what level you are at. Many beginning paddle boarders go with an inflatable model. You can get them as cheap as $400 at Costco, but there are high-end inflatables

I am currently on day 91 today. 91 days in a row! I have paddled through temps as low as 17 degrees with a wind chill, pouring rain, slushing snow, wind.... or bays, and for those looking for competition, races are often held including here in Gig Harbor. While the initial balancing act can take some time to get accustomed to, most kids and adults will be moving fairly well on flat water by the end of the first day. As you improve, paddlers will challenge themselves with bigger bodies of water, while others test their balance and concentration attempting meditation and yoga moves while bobbing in the water. For those looking to try this activity for the first

that sell for upwards of $2,000. Benefits to having an inflatable SUP are its ease of transportation as once it’s deflated, it’s about the size of a camping backpack and will fit in most cars or can be carried on your back. You can check it as luggage or hike with it to a mountain lake. Drawbacks are the time it takes to inflate and the stability and maneuverability are not often as good, and those weighing over 200 lbs will have a tough time finding a board large enough to support them.

are so exciting and wonderful. Not to mention countless seal friends, beautiful birds, eagles, herons, seagulls and Canadian geese. Twice I have had curious baby seals try to get on my board.” People who go for hikes, trail riding or camping deep in the woods are often trying to escape the congestion of the city if even for a few hours. The outdoors helps put your mind back at ease. Brougher believes paddle boarding in the Harbor is one of the best ways to accomplish this.

Traditional SUPs are generally made from woven fiberglass or hard plastics protecting a lightweight foam core. Expect to pay around $700 to $1,500 for these boards with serious racing boards climbing higher. While tougher to transport, traditional SUPs are generally more stable, more responsive, easier to use in rough water and can glide faster through the water. Boards run between 8 feet and 14 feet, with longer boards supporting larger riders. Consider longer boards as well if you are planning to have your kids or dog join you on the board. Your local shop owner will help you determine what works best for how and where you’ll be paddling.

Other than the obvious benefits of exercise and entertainment, paddle boarding provides oneof-a-kind perspectives, especially in our area. With incredible scenery all around us, seeing the landscape from the Harbor and beyond is a wonderful experience. “On a stand up paddleboard you are right there at the water line, seeing all the Pacific Northwest beauty and wildlife. I have had a whale surface within 15 feet of me twice, and have had a Pacific White Sided Dolphin play around with my friends and I every day for five days in a row,” said Brougher. “These are always chance encounters that

“For me it’s the beautiful solitude of gliding along the water, feeling the endorphins release. There is an electrifying symphony of cellular chemicals that wash through your body and brain the instant you paddle and feel the glide. Even the tiniest of muscles seem to rejoice and celebrate the movement and new experience. Stand up paddle boarding is good for the soul, it is rejuvenating to the spirit, much like any experience in nature is, only better.” Paddle boarding is an experience anyone can enjoy whether you’re a serious racer and want to tackle the world’s oceans, or if you simply want to paddle out a hundred yards from shore to drift and relax. It can be done on rivers, lakes and oceans, and the perspective from the board is something you simply can’t get on land. Rent a board or take a lesson this spring and perhaps you’ll enjoy a new hobby that eventually becomes a major part of your lifestyle.

AS THE OLDER GENERATION enters retirement age, many are looking to relive a few pages from their past. Talk to most baby boomers, and they can tell you the favorite muscle car they’ve owned and, more specifically, the cubic inches of the engine and how much horsepower it put out. But for many, starting a family meant trading in muscle for a sedan or the dreaded family mini-van. So now that the kids are out of the house, it’s time to go out and play again! Whether your classic has been collecting dust, just needs a little tinkering or if you’re searching for a specific make and model, Jim Sullivan is your classic car guru, and he happens to live and work right here in the Gig Harbor area. Sullivan developed his passion for cars when he saw his first 1958 Corvette before he could even drive. He’s collected classics from many decades, and today he operates Jim’s Classic Garage, which specializes in muscle and prewar cars. “The business model is simple—when selling a classic car or buying one, do so with respect. We don’t sell used cars here, we sell pieces of art,” said Sullivan. What makes this boutique shop different from others is the variety of situations you will find here. Sullivan sells cars from his own private collection, takes consignments to sell through his vast network of connections, buys vehicles outright and also does both minor and full restoration jobs. Walk into the shop and you’ll find anything from half-ton restored farm trucks dating back to the 1940s and ‘50s to 60’s mustangs and even rare brands such as Packards, Internationals and Graham. Walking into Jim’s Classic Garage is like walking into a

museum of automotive history with an array of exhibits and automobilia. If you have a car you’ve wanted to restore, bring it down to the shop and have an honest conversation. Jim Sullivan can do everything from simply getting it running again to restoring vehicles to full-factory modification. You will receive an upfront idea on what it will take financially to bring your car back to life. Maybe you’ve inherited a classic or have one in the garage that you know you’ll never have the time to restore. Consider putting it on consignment at Jim’s Classic Garage. Sullivan is not just well connected in the greater Seattle area, but he has sold vehicles to buyers in the Caribbean, Holland, Germany, Iraq, China and most of the U.S. as well. Who knows, he might even buy it outright from you to add to his collection! When choosing a shop to restore your classic, trust is everything and that is what Sullivan and his staff pride themselves on. “Great service is what everyone says we deliver. Our 5s program (from my days at GE Capital), provides a safe

and secure environment for their cars,” The first thing you will notice in his shop is that it is cleaner than most cars, and even some homes. Sullivan along with his staff understands the sentimental value of each vehicle and treat all restoration projects with not just the financial value in mind, but each client’s personal attachment to the car. If you’ve got a classic, are interested in buying, selling or restoring, then plan a stop by Jim’s Classic Garage. You’ll find a wealth of automobile knowledge, with great connections, and a long list of satisfied customers. With little personal interest in new vehicles, you’ll know you’re taking your ride to a shop owner that’s dedicated to restoring rolling works of art. Jim’s daily driver right now is a 1956 Continental MK II. Stop by and talk shop with Jim. Who knows, maybe you’ll be on your way to become a collector too!

ALI MARIAH LUKKASSON: Peninsula High School SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Ali Mariah Lukkasson strives to be the best she can be when it comes to both athletics and academics. She has a GPA of 3.8, is enrolled in AP classes and is working on lettering in volunteerism. In addition, she is a member of Peninsula High School’s varsity bowling team. This is Ali’s first year on the bowling team, and she said one of the biggest challenges she has faced is being consistent. “Getting to know your ball and adjusting yourself, your stance and your rhythm accordingly. It’s difficult to keep consistency throughout each game,” shared Ali. She likes the fact that bowling can be both an individual and team sport. “You’re constantly playing against yourself but also have teammates to help keep (up) your morale.”

Her future plans include attending a fouryear college while also continuing to bowl. “I plan on pursuing a career in the medical field,” said Ali. “(I am) continually debating between different careers. I have narrowed my choices down to radiology or psychiatry, but there is no final decision at this time. I have a passion for helping the community and giving back.” She said that there are things she has learned through bowling that she applies in her everyday life. “Bowling is very much a mental game, and you have to keep your cool in order to succeed. My team reminds each other that every frame is a new chance to do your best.”

AVERY JONES: Gig Harbor High School NEVER GIVE UP. That is the life lesson that 17-year-old senior Avery Jones has learned from being involved in athletics. A varsity athlete since sophomore year in both basketball and baseball, Avery was second team all league in basketball as a senior and second team all league in baseball as a junior. Avery has received an athletic scholarship from Washington State University and will continue his baseball career as a pitcher at the collegiate level. While at WSU, Avery plans to study business or finance. “I enjoy working with numbers and people as well,” he said. One of the biggest challenges Avery has faced came when he was only 15 and chosen to play for the Narrows Baseball Club on the 18u/19u team.

my coaches helped me realize that I was on that team for a reason, and I decided I was there to compete. Later that season I received several scholarship offers from Division 1 schools. This taught me to never doubt myself no matter how uncomfortable I might feel.” When asked about what he enjoys most about the game, Avery responded that it is the mental toughness and the strategy of pitching. “Baseball is a game of failure, and in order to be successful, you have to learn how to deal with failure and not let it affect your next performance.”

“At first it was intimidating to be playing against guys with full beards while I was still relying on my mom to get me to practice and games on time,” said Avery. “My mom and

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS SOMETHING that is never deserved or justified, and unfortunately it as an all too familiar problem both nationally and here at home. According to Kathy Dorr, a board member for the RAGS Guild that hosts a juried wearable art competition and sale that benefits the YWCA’s domestic violence prevention and intervention programs, the Pierce County YWCA’s 24-hour domestic abuse hotline received nearly 8,500 calls in 2016. For 22 years, community members have been raising funds and awareness to help victims of domestic abuse, and you can do your part by attending the 23rd Annual RAGS Wearable Art Sale. In its previous 22 sales, more than $1.5-million dollars has been raised and donated to the local YWCA, and those funds go towards programs for those suffering and recovering from domestic violence. Months before the show, the all-volunteer guild solicits regional individuals and businesses for monetary and in-kind donations to defray show expenses and supplement RAGS’s contribution to the YWCA. As a result, nearly 100 percent of RAGS’s proceeds go directly to the YWCA. This year’s event will again be held at Mercedes Benz of Tacoma. “The first RAGS event donated $5,000 to the YWCA Pierce County domestic violence shelter,” said Dorr. “In 2016, the 22nd annual RAGS Sale and Gallery competition gave $110,000 to the YWCA intervention programs. The first shows were held at American Art on Broadway but moved to Mercedes in 1998 because we had outgrown the space.” The blend of art, fashion, shopping and fundraising is what makes RAGS significant to its many loyal supporters, according to Jill Scholtens, RAGS chair. “Domestic violence is an all too familiar issue in our community,” said Scholtens. “Shoppers, artists and volunteers believe that it is important to fund programs offering hope to families affected by domestic violence. And when that opportunity is combined with shopping for unique wearable fashions, people find that it’s a fun way to support an organization that is saving lives in our community.” The wearable art show and gallery will take place March 9 through

March 12 and is open to everyone. Creative clothing, fashion accessories and unusual jewelry from more than 75 artists of local, regional and national acclaim will be for sale at the boutique-style show. One-third of all sales will benefit the YWCA’s domestic violence intervention programs. “The RAGS show offers variety in every price range,” Scholtens said. “From artistic, affordable beaded bracelets and whimsical accessories, to luxurious hand-woven garments, and unique gold, silver or precious stone jewelry.”

Besides its boutique-style marketplace sale, RAGS also features a gallery-style competition of one-of- a-kind garments, accessories and jewelry, with the winners in several categories earning cash awards. Some of these special works are for sale, giving shoppers the opportunity to own an award-winning piece of wearable art. RAGS is underwritten entirely through donations from people and organizations who believe in the YWCA Pierce County’s mission and in RAGS’ creative approach to supporting that mission. These donations fund the production of RAGS. From equipment rental, advertising and decorations to permits and

printing costs. The artists who display and sell their work at RAGS agree to give 33 percent of their sales in the marketplace and 40 percent of their sales in the gallery to RAGS. The annual RAGS donation, including the $110,000 given in 2016, is earmarked to fund YWCA programs and specifically address domestic violence in our community.

productive members of our community and county.”

The RAGS show is open to the public at no charge at Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma, 1701 Alexander Ave. E., just off Interstate 5 in Fife. Show hours are Friday and Saturday, March 10

Despite the continued increase in donations, the demand for services is still very high. According to Dorr, more than 400 requests for shelter were turned away last year due to space constraints. Domestic violence is a problem, but you can be part of the solution by participating in this event. By supporting local artists with your purchase, you are also directly funding programs that are changing and often saving lives. The Guild is always

Dorr has been a part of the Guild since 1996 and looks forward to the event every year for what it provides for the community. “It brings a diverse community of artists, volunteers and businesses together with the common cause of changing and sometimes saving the lives of victims of domestic violence and their children. Health & Lifestyle A TEENAGER’S PERSPECTIVE

Food. Life’s Medicine By Sydney Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor

MY MOTHER OWNS A GYM so you’d assume that I’ve always been healthy. I am healthy now because I have a pretty strict diet.

I would throw fits all the time. I had numerous sensory problems. If I didn’t have a certain amount of hair bands on my right wrist, we had a problem. If my shoes weren’t tight enough, my pants a certain fit, my socks on perfect, we had a problem. The doctor put me on antidepressants for my intestinal issues when I was 8 years old. No one ever connected my sensory and intestinal issues. I can remember to this day feeling so alone and confused. I was so different from the rest of my family who seemed to be pretty low-maintenance people, including my sister who is only 19 months younger than I am. I felt like I was very much the problem child. I was high maintenance and probably very emotionally draining to be around.

Growing up was really tough. I was always going to different doctors wondering what exactly was wrong with me, hoping every time I would get the magic answer to what was causing me so much pain. According to my mother, I had intestinal issues even as a baby. I would throw up so much my mom said she had to cut her hair short so I wouldn’t get it in her hair every day. I would constantly have heartburn, and I would cry all the time. As I grew up, it got worse and worse.

The most comfortable leggings you will ever put on without compromising style Available in both solid colors and a variety of patterns. You are bound to end up with a pair for each day of the week.

My dad is in the Army and we moved a lot. The diagnoses would change as often as the doctors we had to go to due to moving every few years. I loved moving and the adventures it brought us, but I never knew quite what was wrong with me, and every doctor had a different diagnosis from the one before. While we would move, I always had my best friend and protector—my sister. She never gave me any slack. To this day I hate it when people touch my face. My entire face will tense up, and I will freak out. She would hold her whole hand covering my face and tell me that she was going to keep it there until it didn’t bother me anymore. She kept thinking that she would desensitize me. If only it were that easy. Little did I know that not only my digestive problems were affected by food, but my emotional issues as well. I always struggled in school unlike anyone in my family. I always questioned why I was so different and why things seemed harder for me. I was in fifth grade when a doctor mentioned an elimination diet to my mom to see if my system was reacting poorly to the foods I was eating. My mom started researching and testing on herself before making me drastically change the way I ate. When she changed my diet, she changed everyone in the family’s so I wouldn’t feel like I was being

punished. She and my dad started making everything from scratch. It was hard for all of us at first. But then I made straight A’s for the first time in my life. I wasn’t in pain and wasn’t reacting as badly to uncomfortable situations anymore. I was a little girl who was diagnosed with everything from IBS, ADHD, OCD to Sensory Integration Disorder to finally feeling comfortable in my own skin.

Joleen Stenbak 253.358.5481

Once I started eating healthier, everything in my life changed. I was overall happier, even grateful for the life I was given. I stopped asking “why me?” and started asking “why not me?” I was so much more rational and mature. It was shocking to see that my digestive pain wasn’t the only thing that would go away when I ate better. Everything started to become better.

Visit My Boutique

I got along with people more. My grades improved. I felt smarter. Overall I was a better person. I have always had empathy for other people but I would always think of myself as “The Victim.” I stopped making myself the victim and was instead someone who was productive and thrived, even in bad circumstances. I know now that things do get better if we work to make them better, and I have an overall better outlook with my differences to my family. I figured out my differences make me unique and not alone. I love the food I eat and how it makes me feel. I am better.

DO YOU SNORE OR WORSE?

SLEEP APNEA DOES IT HURT YOUR BRAIN? BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS

THE LAST STRAW FOR SUSAN was when she was forced to stay in bed all day with an ice pack on her head, unable to go to work or play with her daughter. She took over-the-counter medications and a prescription medication when the pain got really bad. She had tried everything—massage, chiropractic treatment and physical therapy. These treatments were somewhat effective, but the headaches continued. Dealing with the headaches was a constant struggle; she was starting to get depressed. Having trouble sleeping? Do you snore loudly? Maybe your spouse has noticed pauses in your breathing. Is your sleep restless? Do you wake up the next morning with a headache? Are you excessively tired throughout the day? Do you have trouble concentrating or find yourself getting sleepy during the day? If you said yes to any of these, you might have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea affects 5 to 10 percent of adults in the U.S. and can often go undiagnosed. With dangerous symptoms often overlooked and associated with a number of health risks, it’s important to get treatment as soon as possible. A new study from the UCLA School of Nursing now suggests that sleep apnea might even be hurting our brains. They discovered that blood flow to your brain can change if you have sleep apnea. The heart has problems pumping blood to the body and this can reduce the amount of blood (and oxygen) that gets to your brain. Each time a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times a night, the oxygen level in the blood drops and that can damage many cells in the body. If left

untreated, it could lead to high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, depression and other serious health problems. The UCLA study looked at both men and women (with and without obstructive sleep apnea), and used a special scan to measure blood volume and oxygen-dependent signals in the brain. Researchers measured three physical tasks while the participant was awake. Breathing out through a very small tube to raise the pressure in the chest, a hand grip test, and a test where the participant’s right foot was put in icy water for a minute.

Eat small meals

The breathing test didn’t show much difference between those with or without sleep apnea, however the hand grip and ice water challenges showed people with sleep apnea had a much weaker blood flow response. Researchers believe that the reason that the participants with sleep apnea had weaker blood flow was because the signals to the nerves in the arms and legs had to go through the areas of the brain that control sensation and muscle movement. Because of the damage to the brain that sleep apnea causes, these signals traveled slower than in the participants without sleep apnea. The study also found that the problem was greater in women with sleep apnea, and researchers are now studying to see if there can be treatment that can reverse the damaging effects of this condition. If you find you have any of the symptoms of sleep apnea, be sure to get checked out. It may save you from many other health problems beyond a good night’s sleep!

Choose several small meals over a few big meals a day. This balances out your energy distribution throughout the day. In general, eat when you feel hungry, and STOP when you’re full. You don’t need to wait until official meal times before you start eating. Listen to your body and what it tells you.

Affecting Your Daily Life? Snoring isn’t sexy! Stop it! Have you been told you snore? Snoring isn’t normal. It affects your partner’s sleep as well as yours. Also, snoring can be a symptom of a more serious condition called sleep apnea. Treatment for snoring or sleep apnea could be as simple as sleeping with an oral appliance! REST DELAYED ONSET MUSCLE soreness (DOMS) is a distinctive muscle pain that almost everyone has experienced after performing intense or unfamiliar exercises. DOMS is a unique type of muscle pain in that it usually sets in 24 to 48 hours after the initial workout and may continue for up to 72 hours before recovery. DOMS has been referred to as muscle fever due to the fact that your muscles may feel tired and sickly as well as sore. The cause of DOMS has been studied but without any definitive answers. Most evidence concludes that the cause is from micro-trauma to the muscle fibers. The damaged muscle fibers may trigger an immune response within the muscle, leading to inflammation and pain. Almost all studies show that this type of muscle pain is a result of an eccentric or isometric muscle contraction in which the muscle is being worked as it lengthens or stays static, not as it shortens. For example, DOMS could occur with a bicep curl or sit up, not with the bringing the weight up and closer to the body, but with the slow lowering of the weight down and away from center. In jumping and lunging activities, DOMS occurs with the landing and deceleration of the exercise. It is important to note that DOMS is not necessarily an undesirable occurrence, and muscles adapt to the increased strain. When the pain subsides, the muscles will heal stronger, and DOMS is less likely to occur with subsequent afflicting exercises. As with most health related issues, the best cure for DOMS is prevention. Even though DOMS can be a good sign that the muscles were worked hard, there are steps that can reduce the occurrence of this uncomfortable feeling. The most important factor in reducing DOMS is to go into a new exercise program

with plenty of rest and be well hydrated. Lack of sleep and dehydration make muscle damage more likely to occur, and recovery time takes longer. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation may be the number one cause of reported muscle pain. The use of compression garments during any high intensity activity that causes muscle jarring has been shown to be effective by supporting the muscle and reducing the likelihood of trauma due to undulations happening to the muscle with impact. Once DOMS has set in, there are a few remedies that can help speed up recovery: • Light exercise such as swimming or walking. Exercising the sore muscle is a very effective way to bring back blood flow and reduce pain and stiffness, aquatic exercise has the added relaxation and reducing inflammation. • Warm Epsom salt bath or magnesium supplement. Magnesium has been shown to be an effective muscle relaxer. • Ice is not effective, but heat is. The best approach is a contrast bath in which one alternates between hot and cold. This is very effective to bring blood flow into the muscles. • Natural supplements such as curcumin, tart cherry juice and omega 3 are known to be effective anti-inflammatories. • Modalities such as ultrasound and electro stimulation have been shown effective in some people. DOMS is not an injury and is a normal adaptation to working muscles. Don’t let the pain discourage activity; over time the body should adapt and the soreness should go away.

LOW BACK PAIN

SELF-CARE

BEING PROACTIVE IS THE KEY TO PREVENTION BY DAVID ANGELL, DC, CONVERGENT THERAPIES

LOW BACK PAIN is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor. It is also one of the most common reasons people miss work. In 2006, the cost of low back pain in the U.S. was estimated at $100 billion. These statistics can be found in a new practice guideline, published by the American College of Physicians (ACP), titled Noninvasive Treatments for Acute, Subacute, and Chronic Low Back Pain. I can understand why you might not be too excited about practice guidelines, but for practitioners, they are super spark notes containing the top-level research being done in a certain field. Doctors trust groups like ACP, and select others, to help them make the best decisions they can. It is amazing to see how these guidelines have changed over the decades from when they were first introduced. Looking at low back pain, we see a general shift away from surgery and rest towards activity and alternative treatments. In 2007, when the last guideline was published, there were some key differences between that one and the publication this past month, February 2017. In the old guideline, physicians were instructed to find out what kind of low back pain was happening. If it was non-specific low back pain (a catch-all term for low back pain which is not medically concerning), instructions were to give selfcare directions and recommend medication starting with acetaminophen, or another NSAID like ibuprofen, before turning to harder drugs. If that did not work, it was time to refer to a non-pharmacologic therapy, such as massage, spinal manipulation, exercise therapy, acupuncture, yoga etc. In the newest guidelines, however, the first recommendation is to inform you, the patient, that most low back pain gets better over time. From there, you can decide on a non-pharmacologic treatment to manage

symptoms. Acetaminophen is no longer advised if a patient asks for medication. Now, physicians offer more alternative treatments, such as tai-chi, mindfulness-based stress reduction, low-level laser and more. The guideline concludes that opioids should only be prescribed if every other option has been attempted without result. Even then it may not be worth it. The easiest way to take care of low back pain is prevention. Most Americans will have low back pain at some point in their lives, and many will suffer from it on a regular basis. The majority of low back pain seen today can be attributed to several hours of sitting, along with a lack of proper exercise. To combat the harmful effects of sitting, it is important to stretch our hip flexors and hamstrings, while strengthening our glutes and lower abdominals. The other common cause of low back pain comes from bending in our back instead of at the hip. By practicing “hiphinging, you can learn to bend over in a safe way. Act today to save yourself from pain in the future!

The trends this year are an eclectic collection of elegance and simplicity. WEDDING IDEAS ABOUND but which ones to pick will set the tone and perhaps be the first memories of a couple’s new life together. Their wedding will become the touchstone of the vows they took in front of the people they love. Weddings can be as lavish or as simple as you’d like; what’s important is that it’s a special day for you and your spouse. Keeping things light and interesting is a sure bet in making memories. Giving the wedding traditions a bit of a twist will make your celebration unique– from the venue to the flowers and the sendoff. They’ll create a mood for your guests–and one to give them something to remember and look back on fondly. The trends this year are an eclectic collection of elegance and simplicity. They are old favorites with a twist. It all depends on how much you want to wow yourself and your guests! some things yourself! Gather a group of friends and spray paint old wine bottles in different hues–perhaps your wedding color scheme or metallic hues and glitter for use as centerpieces. Then, simply add a flower and some greens to each instead of having a florist design the centerpieces for the dinner tables. Or, get small glass bowls and get floating votives or flower blooms. One can’t escape the pine trees living in the Northwest! Collect pine cones and with a small handsaw, cut into the pine cones to make them into place card holders. Honor loved ones who have passed on with a separate table in their honor with candles and their own centerpiece. There’s so much you can do on a small budget–give your wedding your own handmade touch and save the money for your honeymoon! The Dress Through the years, one can see how dresses have gone through a lifecycle of change–from simple to fairytale to anything goes. The styles

For years, the strapless gown ruled, but now you have off-the-shoulder short sleeves, quartersleeve and full. Styles look like they are a fusion of old and new. Think simple tops and long flowing skirts. Or, lacy long sleeves and sheerto-the knee gowns. There is short and flirty and long and elegant–all with a beautiful, whimsical blend of fabrics–organza, lace and chiffon in all shades of white or for a newer twist, soft pastel colors. Top off your look with a lacy bolero over your shoulders or an oversized bow at the waist. There’s no reason you couldn’t find your dream dress from this year’s styles. The Locale (Venue) Brides and grooms are moving away from the traditional hotel reception to different venues in settings that lend themselves to a magical day. Decide your favorite locale–is it a beautiful garden? A large Victorian house? By the beach? An old farmhouse or restored barn? There’s a

venue for each, so get creative! Having a big reception doesn’t mean you have to get a castle for your venue. Consider a local winery as each has its own personality and space for parties.

the various choices, and it also eliminates the need for servers!

Cakes are still often three-tiered beauties, but the décor is getting a makeover. Pastry chefs can make these memorable desserts look like gold, marble, watercolor, tree bark or stained glass. Or, go in reverse and have a naked cake encased in a clear glaze with the inner filling for show. Top off the cake with some fresh blossoms for a rustic, whimsical look. Is that layered cake too much? Some couples keep it simple and use a regular-sized cake as the centerpiece for the tables. Either way, let the dessert be an edible sculpture to be revered!

Skip the steak and chicken and go for local flavor. What’s a local favorite that you could serve? Is there a farm-to-table catering service? Have some fun designing food bars with tapas style appetizers, a taco bar or even pizza where guests serve themselves. Let them get up and mingle while enjoying healthy eats like fruit kabobs, artisan crostinis or vegetarian spring rolls. Have a table with a s’mores bar for everyone to assemble their own desserts or other smaller dessert offerings such as finger tarts or raspberry cups topped with fresh whipped cream. Guests will be entertained by

SLR Lounge say there is a current trend for the look of instant cameras from our past. Couples often still distribute them for guests to snap their own pics, but they now want that look professionally taken. Ask your photographer about mimicking this kind of film photography through the use of filters or special apps. Couples are also asking for stylized portraits of the wedding party that make everyone look like a high fashion model. Another trend is incorporating photojournalistic techniques where the photographer acts like a director to stage a scene that appears candid such as of you and your friends getting ready before the ceremony. Don’t think it’s phony. Most of us aren’t used to acting natural in front of a camera, so don’t be afraid to take some direction–you’ll be happy with the outcome! When you’re interviewing photographers, see if they have experience with these trends. Similarly, with videography, there are a number of unique ways to memorialize the wedding. A wedding video can be shot in documentary style to tell a story of the event. Ask about how such a style can be done for you. You’ll be surprised at how discrete videographers can be so as not

to be intrusive on the festivities. You can have a photo montage of yourself and your spouse by submitting a collection of photos from each other’s lives. See what your videographer can do for you based on your preferences. The Festivities Dancing doesn’t have to be the only form of entertainment. The possibilities are endless when it comes to simple yet fun ways to keep guests entertained and making memories. Photo booths have been around for some time but now with the addition of a video booth where guests record a story, sing or give advice. As the party goes on, see the “other side” of your guests shine! Other ideas include having cartoonists and magicians–adult guests will enjoy them as much as any kid will. Treat your guests to a memento that they can take home or wow them with an entertainer that will send them home happy from a good party. Or, have a candy toss for the kids instead of the garter, give the bouquet to someone special instead of embarrassing shy girlfriends, set up a lawn bowling game outside for guests to play. Whatever you decide on, have fun giving your wedding a twist on a tradition. It will give you and your spouse something to smile about on your anniversary.

Rustic Interior Design

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

68

By Patty Hutchens Design is so subjective. One person’s tastes doesn’t necessarily equal someone else’s. In the following pages there are a few ideas on how to incorporate an interior design strategy in your home that works for you. Sometimes all it takes is some visual inspiration to get the creative juices going. See where you end up! The journey can be just as exciting as the end result!

BARNWOOD HEADBOARDS Are you looking to incorporate a rustic look to your bedroom or living area? Think about adding barn wood to an entire accent wall to serve as a headboard. Looking to bring a touch of soft and natural colors to a bedroom? Construct a headboard made of a collection of varying colors of wood panels. Carry that rustic look into your living area by creating your mantel out of barn wood or surrounding your entire fireplace with it. Decorating with vintage wood, mixing and matching colors and grains, not only looks stylish but provides a comfortable, warm and inviting atmosphere!

TEXTURES When it comes to interior design, many of us think we need to match everything to have a cohesive and flowing feel to the room. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth! Having contrast in colors and textures provides multiple elements, which draws our interest to the room as a whole. But be sure to know when enough is enough. You do not want your senses to become overwhelmed, so striking a balance is important. For example, when mixing patterns, combine prints that are in the same color palette. Keeping your patterns to a maximum of four that are spread throughout the room is what most designers recommend.

Farm Kitchen Nothing says “welcome” more than a farmhouse-style kitchen. Typically designed with cooking spaces for large groups of people, this unpretentious design makes one feel comfortable and at home. With a focus on using natural materials, everything from the cabinets to the table and chairs are typically constructed of a quality hardwood. One popular characteristic of a farmhouse-style kitchen is the sink. With a large basin, the farmhouse sink makes cleaning large pots and pans a much easier task. When looking to accessories, plaid and gingham are popular for curtains, tablecloths, placemats and napkins when it comes to giving your kitchen a feeling of “being on the farm.”

Bold Lighting

When it comes to making a statement, oversized lighting has become increasingly popular. As a focal point when one enters a room, dramatic and oversized lighting is sure to not only capture the attention of those who see it, but it can also act as an artistic piece as well. If you want to make an immediate impression, the front entry is a place to be creative and bold. When choosing your oversized light fixture, also be sure to not overwhelm the space. One of the most popular spaces for introducing oversized lighting is the dining area. Large dome lights or drum pendants are some of the more popular choices. And remember, floor lamps can also provide a stunning option for your living area when seeking to make a bold statement. Changing the feel of a room does not have to be limited to paint and furniture; lighting is an inexpensive way to introduce a whole new look.

Exposed Brick

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

72

What started out as a practical solution has turned into a popular decorating trend. Exposing the brick on walls first became popular as an alternative to repairing or replacing damaged plaster. Whether one leaves the brick in a natural color, paints them a solid color or adds a touch of color that matches or complements the other walls to provide a more contemporary look, exposed brick will add a unique look to your home. Also, by having a rough surface such as brick to hang your artwork, you can change your wall hangings often without worrying about patching holes in the wall.

TIN CEILING

Although it is a concept that began in the 1880s, tin ceilings are being used today to dress up one’s ceiling and create a unique look to one’s home. Unlike the decorative ceilings of 130 years ago that were made of steel and served as not only an aesthetic addition but also as fire protection, today most of the panels are constructed of 30-gauge, tin-plated steel that is only 1/100 of an inch thick. Costing anywhere from $2 to $17 per square foot, there is a vast array of styles and colors from which to choose.

Barn Doors When it comes to being creative with interior design, one area that is often overlooked and considered to be “standard” are our doors. But nowadays, sliding barn doors are making a statement in many homes. With limitless colors, textures and designs available, you can create a one-of-a-kind look. No matter what area of your home you are seeking to create a barrier, bedroom and bathroom or kitchen and dining area, you can do so with a sliding barn door and give your interior a dramatic and distinctive look at the same time.

n recent years the desire to live and entertain both indoors and outdoors simultaneously has gone beyond a design trend and has become more of an indoor-outdoor movement. Operable glass wall systems such as NanaWalls can turn indoor rooms into outdoor spaces instantly. Outdoor kitchens and expansive covered decks and patios are changing the way we live in our homes. Living in the Pacific Northwest

Outdoor entertaining requires more flexibility of use than other types of spaces. Here are some tips and tricks that can maximize your investment and create a space that makes you want to entertain. Define your goals: Your outdoor entertaining space may be a deck or patio, but don’t limit yourself. Almost any space that allows you to interact with nature’s landscape can really be ideal. How far you want to take your concept will depend on your creativity and your budget. It’s important to consider the end use of the space. Do you want a cozy lounge space for friends and family or do you entertain on a larger scale? Define your space: Your outdoor space should be an extension of your home. Furnishings and materials that resonate with your personal style are going to work best. Tip: Whenever you design a space, whether it’s interior or exterior, select three colors that work well together and repeat them. This will help you to avoid a chaotic color scheme. Choose outdoor furniture and fabric that reflects the style and color of your home’s interior. Include the garden or surrounding plants and landscaping, with both planters and fabric choices, into your overall design aesthetic. Use a variety of seating options: Stools and tables are a great opportunity to intermix different pieces and add visual interest.

Furniture placement is key in creating comfortable conversation areas. Tip: You can anchor your outdoor entertaining space with any outdoor rug. Using plants can add texture, color and dimension to your space. You can be as creative as you like with interesting containers and even vertical gardens. Protecting your investment While you may be tempted to repurpose indoor furniture for your outdoor space, remember woods that work best for outdoor use in our climate are teak, treated cedar and Ipe. Heat is the enemy of most wood tables designed for the interior, but humidity can cause furniture to delaminate or warp beyond repair. Make sure your pieces are intended for outdoor use. This is true if your outdoor space is covered or not. Fabrics should be rated for outdoor use. Consider UV exposure rating/

fade-resistance, consider waterproof versus water resistance, resistance to mold and mildew and amount of maintenance required to clean your pieces. Also consider where you will store your pieces when they are not in use. Whether your goal is to lounge, entertain, dine or simply escape, with some creative planning and thoughtful design you can create a beautiful outdoor space that will not only provide a tranquil space for you and the family but the warm inviting environment for your outdoor summer parties.

Living Fences Do you want to define the edge of your property, but not do so by constructing a fence? Live fencing is the perfect alternative and the benefits are many! Natural fences of trees, shrubs and flowering bushes can create a beautiful natural boundary to your property as well as provide privacy. So just how are these grown? One way is through a process called osculation. Begin by planting young trees or shrubs four to eight inches apart; this will depend upon the plant chosen and the height you would like it to grow. As the plants grow, tie the branches together. If your plants are close together you can even cross the branches that are not tied. The end result? A barrier that is closely interlocked that will continue to be stronger and more resistant each year. And the good news with natural fences is that should the roots of one of the plants die, the top will continue to grow as it receives support from the other plants with which it has intertwined.

Planter Walls Creating a vertical garden offers an opportunity to add color and vibrancy to your yard. All you need to start is a blank wall or a bare fence. Plant edibles, annuals and even perennials for a burst of color. If you don’t have a place to create your planter wall, a wood palette makes a perfect starting point to construct one, and you can gain inspiration simply by logging onto Pinterest. Or if you simply want to order one, there are “living walls” that can be custom made. A couple starting points include livinggreenplanters.com or your local garden store. You can even make your wall “portable” by placing a planter box on wheels and attach vertical lattice to provide a place for plants. This is a great option if you want to use your wall as a privacy barrier or move it around to optimize sun exposure. Whatever you choose, take the opportunity to be creative!

Raised Beds

Whether you consider yourself a gardener or not, raised beds can help you succeed in having a plentiful harvest. Here are just some of the advantages that gardening in raised beds offers: A higher quality of soil – A raised bed, as opposed to supplementing the soil in your yard, allows you the ability to plant your vegetables with the perfect soil blend, something that will go far to achieving a plentiful harvest. Less weed growth - Raised beds are typically planted more densely than those that are planted in the ground. This means there is less room for weeds to grow, and if they do find the space, they are easier to pull from soil in raised beds. More growth in less space – Whether you use succession planting or vertical supports, you are able to plant more food in a small space, resulting in an abundance of fresh vegetables.

Edible Landscapes Do you consider yourself more practical than creative? This is an opportunity for you to be both! Edible landscape techniques allow the integration of your plants into a decorative setting. Whether you plant herbs, seeds or berries, the result is not only beautiful but useful as well. A popular practice is utilizing onion and garlic chives as a perennial edging or border plant in an herb garden. Chives are part of the “lily” family and are grown in large part for their leaves and flowers. And the best part is they keep coming back year after year! When choosing a spot for the chives, keep in mind that they do best in full sun. When planting chives, start in early spring using soil that has much compost or a slow-release fertilizer. For best results, plant them 8 to 12 inches apart and use rich, well-drained soil. If you choose to grow your chives near peppers, there is the benefit of deterring insects. It is also said that it can improve the flavor and yields of nearby plants.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

National Parks PLANNING FOR A SECOND CENTURY

IN A COUNTRY SO VAST and full of resources, it would be easy to allow all-out development to encourage prosperity and wealth with little regard to the land. Thankfully, during and immediately following the Industrial Revolution and Gold Rush of the mid-1800s, leaders in our country realized the importance of the special places across the land. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law The Yellowstone National Park Protection Plan, creating the world’s first national park that is one of the most visited wild places in the country today. The bill reads in part “the headwaters of the Yellowstone River… is hereby reserved and withdrawn from settlement, occupancy or sale… and dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” This was to many a completely new concept, but as more travelers flocked to Yellowstone to experience its beauty and wonder, more began to understand the need to save and preserve special places across America.

Fast forward to today and the U.S. National Parks Service is responsible for maintaining 546 national parks, preserves, monuments, historical sites, memorials, battlefields, scenic lands and more. Created in August of 1916, the National Parks Service (NPS) just celebrated its centennial. The agency has grown tremendously as the number of sites and national parks have multiplied over the last century. Park service employees have the ever-changing task of encouraging visitors to these sites while keeping them maintained and in a natural and minimally disturbed state. Planning for the centennial celebration and setting goals for the next 100 years began back under the Bush Administration Centennial Initiative signed in 2006. For three years, the NPS took public comment through town hall discussions and feedback to hear what Americans wanted to see and experience in their National Parks system. Through an independent commission of science, education, conservation and civic engagement leaders, a plan of action was developed for the next 100 years.

It was determined that to connect people to parks in the next century, the NPS must: DEVELOP and nurture lifelong connections between the public and parks—especially for young people—through a continuum of engaging recreational, educational, volunteer and work experiences. CONNECT urban communities to parks, trails, waterways and community green spaces that give people access to fun outdoor experiences close to home. EXPAND the use of parks as places for healthy outdoor recreation that contributes to people’s physical, mental and social well-being.

The NPS has recently launched an updated marketing campaign called “Find Your Park” www.findyourpark.com. As the park service adapts an ever-changing culture of online communication and sharing, so has its online presence increased. An easy search application provides an outline of each site’s location, background and planning information for

your visit. You can browse by state or by park name, and with one click have all the information needed for your visit. Just like sharing through Instagram or Facebook, visitors to the national parks are invited to share their photos or stories to encourage others to visit their national parks system.

While much of America is now seen as less active, spending more time in front of screens, and too busy to take a vacation, visitation numbers point out that many of us are dedicating time to experience these sites.

When park admission began being tracked in 1904, roughly 120,000 visitors passed through our national parks. By 1920, the number reached one million annual visitors. 1963 we cracked 100 million, and in 2015 there were more than 300 million visits to NPS managed parks and sites. Through its Find Your Park Campaign, the NPS gained 1.2 million followers on social media in 2016, sold $10 million worth of merchandise and saw $341 million donated towards the campaign. It’s evident that not only are many Americans deeply passionate about seeing these parks but

are more than willing to help keep them up and running through personal financial support. Living in the West, we are blessed to be near so many of these national treasures. In fact, during a weeklong road trip you might be surprised at how many parks you can experience in a short amount of time. The Big Three Traveling through Western Montana, you’ll experience some of the most beautiful open spaces in the country. Begin your trip in Glacier National Park, known as “The Crown Jewel of the Continent.” Here you’ll find ancient glaciers that have carved amazing peaks and mountain lakes into a stunning display. Traverse the Going to the Sun Road and explore miles of backcountry hiking. Travel about six hours south to West Yellowstone and be prepared to see other worldly landscapes. Geysers, hot pots, peaks and valleys dot the land, and many will spot deer, elk, bear and occasionally wolves on their trip. Log another 130 miles south into Wyoming, and you’ll be blown away by the Teton Mountain range in Grand Teton National

Park. Two hundred miles of trails await you in the park that’s equally beautiful but less visited. On a hot day, a float down the Snake River can’t be beat. Total Miles: 497 Seattle Loop Those that can get out of Seattle traffic will quickly find incredible national parks a short drive from each other. Just 100 miles northeast, you will find North Cascades National Park. Inside this park you’ll find everything from temperate rain forest, to glaciers, to dry ponderosa pine forests. With beautiful Lake Chelan included in this wilderness, there are ample opportunities for fishing or rafting, as well as easily accessible campground and hiking and biking trails. Another 100 miles west and you’ll end up in the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Preserve. For those who enjoy sailing or kayaking, this is one of the best places in the country. Whale watching tours are especially popular from April through September. Take a history lesson at the American Camp on the southern tip and the British Camp at the northern tip and

learn why we almost went to war over a pig. End your trip by traveling another 130 miles or so and camping inside Olympic National Park. Backpackers are drawn to the nearly one million acres that include everything from glacial capped peaks and old growth forests to 70 miles of coastline. There are 16 campgrounds inside the park, and several day hikes, making this a great park to visit with children. Total Miles: 330 Summer is almost upon us, and you’re probably in the midst of planning your annual summer vacation. Consider a visit to one or multiple national parks that are not far from our own backyard. These lands are owned by all of us and are set aside for our enjoyment and recreation. Being in nature calms the soul and unplugging as a couple or family can bring us all closer together. With another hundred-year plan in place by the National Parks Service, it is comforting to know that these special places will still be there for the enjoyment of generations to come.

sell your cars in the real world. Every year we field calls from people who want us to sell their prized collector cars that have been sitting in the garage waiting for just the right moment - When Barrett Jackson says they sold a car just like theirs for $130,000. The reality of it is, in most cases the buyer overpaid because he was overserved and the woman or friend he was with had to be impressed. Another reason is, it was for charity. The ones that are for real, most likely spent $250,000 in order to get the $130,000 sales price. These are mostly number 1 condition cars that have had teams of people working for months, if not years on them. We rarely see a car come to the shop that is a number 1 condition car. Most cars we see are between a 2 & 3 condition 1966 PONTIAC 1966 CORVETTE 1936 SERIES 70 and to reality we come.STINGRAY GTO CADILLAC car.
