Ports are the lifeblood of our local economy and have been since early settlers began shipping goods and timber from the Northwest more than 100 years ago. While some port cities are busy as ever, others have transformed their waterfront into relaxing getaways for locals and tourists alike. Follow us as we make stops from the Port of Tacoma to Port Angeles and the wonderful places along the way.

Garden of the Gods
We’re on our way to Colorado, but not to the places you’re most familiar with. South of Denver is a park that’s unlike any other in the West, and it’s just a stone’s throw from Downtown Colorado Springs. Garden of the Gods is a beacon for rock climbers and adventure seekers but is also easily viewed by families and young children. The landscape transforms you back to the age of the dinosaur, and you’ll remember this trip for years to come.

It’s almost summer, and that means it’s prime celebration time across the Inland Northwest. We’ve got you covered from The Sound to the mountain towns of North Idaho when it comes to outdoor headlining concerts, celebrating the arts, boats that go real fast and an up-close look at vessels rarely seen at such distances. There is so much to do this summer, but don’t make plans before checking out our can’t-miss festivals.
Choosing the perfect home isn’t always easy. But it doesn’t have to be hard either.

PUBLISHER Celebrate! THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY. It is a time set aside to honor those women who are there for us through all phases of our lives, give selflessly of themselves and love us unconditionally. Motherhood has changed significantly over the last generation. The days of Ozzie and Harriet and Ward and June Cleaver are no longer the typical American family. Instead, we have families with both parents working and single-parent homes. Now more than ever mothers are juggling multiple roles. It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Motherhood comes in many forms. It is the grandmother who comes to all of your sporting events. It is the aunt who remembers all the special occasions in your life. It is the friend’s mom who provides advice at every stage of your life, especially after your own mother is no longer here.
“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.”
As we celebrate this special day dedicated to mothers, think of those women in your life who have been a positive influence and helped shape you into who you are today. Maybe they don’t even know the difference they have made to you. Pick up the phone, give them a call and tell them, “Thank you.” It is the greatest Mother’s Day gift of all.

YOUR WELCOME PLAZA SKANSIE BROTHERS PARK
IF YOU ARE WONDERING about what is going on at Skansie Park, here is your chance for an intimate perspective before the plaza makes its debut at the end of this month. Skansie Brothers Park, the hub of downtown to many, has been a failing lift station for many years. Way back when, it was decided that this location would be a good fit for wastewater collection. The infrastructure was mostly hidden underground, using a gravity-fed system, to move wastewater from this lower elevation to a higher one— the treatment plant. Did you know that while you are enjoying a concert in the park or shopping at the downtown farmers market, below you, this lift station receives approximately one third of our city’s wastewater? The new Welcome Plaza replaces Lift Station #4 with a new Lift Station#4B, increasing the facility’s capacity. The orientation of this building allows you to enjoy it from any viewpoint. Whether you are driving down Rosedale, strolling along Harborview Drive,

sitting at the bus stop or docking on the water. Any way you arrive, you will have many choices of how to access and interact with the plaza. Redesigning and upgrading a lift station is quite a challenge, especially on this extremely sensitive site. The waterfront alone brings a set of challenges. The existing bathrooms had been flooding due to rising water levels of high tides. How can we raise the new structure three feet to meet current flood level requirements and still keep the physical connection to Jerisich Dock and allow for ADA accessibility?
Could we condense the building program to the smallest footprint possible to meet its function and our growing needs as a community; solidifying our relationship and sense of place with the park itself? Here are the basic needs for the Lift Station to work properly: a wastewater receiving well, aka wet well; a filtration system to remove bulky materials; pumps and piping; a control room with access to mechanical and electrical with a clear sightline and proximity to the wet well itself; and an odor and ventilation system.
Keeping all those challenges and program How do we address the historical context requirements in mind, the Welcome Plaza was of the nearby structures, the Skansie born. The building program contains: exterior Netshed and Skansie House? Is it possible to access to recycling/garbage bins, drive-up create a municipal structure that does not access to the control room (mechanical and look governmental? How can we politely electrical), a covered breezeway with access PHOTOS THIS PAGE COURTESY INHABITAT.COM complement the existing built environment to women’s and men’s restrooms, two separate

restrooms with showers, a plumbing chase, a storage room, and an ADA platform lift with an ample viewing deck and seating. The main feature of the site is the Fisherman’s Memorial, which will stand on a new pedestal and be adorned with proper lighting and an amazing water feature. The water will rise from the ground surrounding the net to symbolize the catch of jumping fish. We all realize that change occurs. It is our responsibility as a community to design with accessibility and amenities for all. In our city park next to the harbor teeming with masts rising from the many boats docked and anchored there, the new structure will welcome residents and visitors to engage with a higher perspective of our city center; connecting our past through reclaimed materials and designing for present and future needs. FINANCIAL GIFTS—AND TIPS—FOR NEW GRADUATES
VOTED one of the TOP mortgage companies to work with YEAR after YEAR!
THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES
IT’S GRADUATION SEASON AGAIN. If your child is graduating from high school or college, you have reason to celebrate. But what should you give to your newly minted diploma holder? You might want to consider offering a combination of financial gifts and tips, which, taken together, could set your graduate on a path toward a successful, independent life. What sort of gifts and tips should you consider? Here are a few ideas:
For all your mortgage needs... Call me today!
Nancy LeMessurier Loan Originator, NMLS# 1402740
I’VE MOVED! My new address: 5151 Borgen BLVD Suite 101C Gig Harbor, WA 98332 www.apmortgage.com nancy.lemessurier@apmortgage.com (C) 253-225-3885 (P) 253-649-4059 NMLS 1850 • Branch NMLS 1370632
• Give a few shares of stock. Everyone should understand the financial markets and how they work. One great way to encourage this interest is to give your child a few shares of stock. Young people enjoy owning a piece of a company that makes the products and services they like – and the very act of ownership can inspire them to learn more about investing and to ask questions: What causes the stock price to go up or down? How long should I hold this stock? Should I own several stocks like this one, or is it better to branch out to find new opportunities? Over time, in learning the answers to these and other questions, your child can become familiar with investing and how to make the best choices. • Encourage your graduate to open an IRA. Your child can open an IRA as long as he or she has some earned income. You might want to suggest that your child consider a Roth IRA, which, at the child’s age and income level, may be a good choice. With a Roth IRA, children can access their contributions at any time, tax- and penalty-free. They can’t touch the earnings without incurring both taxes and penalties, however, until
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
26
they reach 59½. But you will want to encourage them to keep the money in their IRA intact, giving it the chance to grow. • Provide some financial education. Unfortunately, most young people don’t really receive any kind of formal financial education. Of course, you can try to provide some of this knowledge to your own children, but, as you know, advice from Mom and Dad sometimes gets ignored. However, you might get better results if you arrange for your recent graduate to meet with a financial professional. As mentioned above, owning stocks, and following their progress, can teach your children a great deal about investing, but a financial professional can paint the “big picture” and explain how all aspects of money management – such as borrowing, budgeting, saving and investing –fit together to help individuals stay in control of their finances and make progress toward their important financial goals, such as buying a house and retiring in comfort. Recent graduates, whether leaving high school or college, are at “turning points” in their lives and can benefit greatly from understanding the importance of developing good, lifelong financial habits. Most of us can think of several moneyrelated mistakes we’ve made over the course of many years. And your children will make some errors, too. But by providing them with some appropriate financial gifts and valuable advice upon their graduation, they may well be better prepared to keep those mistakes to a minimum – while maximizing their ability to make good decisions.

HOLDING THE KEY TO EMPLOYEE HAPPINESS
AS THE CALENDAR FLIPS to another year, many employees will consider starting the new year on the hunt for a new job. In today’s changing workforce, it is more important than ever for companies to realize that a salary alone is no longer enough to recruit or retain strong employees. According to a recent survey by Aflac, small businesses deserve a round of applause for their ability to keep employees happy. The report found that 85 percent of small-business employees are happy in their current job, and more than half (51 percent) agree that most of or all of their happiness in their current job is a result of working for a small business. The keys to happiness Nearly a quarter of participants (23 percent) stated that the feeling of importance was the best part of working for a small business. Small businesses have the unique ability to make employees feel appreciated, respected and valued on a personal and professional level. In a small-business environment, there are typically fewer layers between newcomers and leadership. This tight-knit structure of small businesses can create a family like atmosphere that allows employees to feel that their opinions matter and that they play a significant role in the business’s mission. Flexibility is also vital in creating employee happiness. According to the report, 30 percent of respondents noted that flexible scheduling was the best part of working for a small business. This can include working from home, leaving work early to play in a summer sports league or giving new parents
Expert design with color, texture and balance in the garden and in the home. an extra week of paid time off to help care for their newborn. A workplace that promotes healthy work-life balance can create happier, less-stressed employees and can also increase employee productivity on the job. Unlocking improvements Although small businesses excel at keeping employees happy, there is always room for improvement. In a small-business community, money does not seem to be the only motivator. In fact, 65 percent of small-business employees indicate that an improvement in their benefit offerings would make them happier employees. By offering a robust benefits plan that includes voluntary benefits, small businesses can ensure that their employees are able to find the right benefits to meet their individual needs.

INSPIRING INGENUITY THREE PRACTICES FOR A CREATIVITY BREAKTHROUGH BY DEBORAH OLIVE, BUSINESS/LIFE COACH
MAKE TIME
WE LOVE CREATIVITY, PRODUCING ORIGINAL ideas or making something new or imaginative. We appreciate creativity both as a consumer and as an innovator. Consider the last time you found a new style of shoes, a refreshing logo or a novel restaurant. Maybe you enjoyed sharing a new experience with your family or colleagues. The advertising industry, product design, education and training—as well as entertainment and the arts—are built around creativity.
I help a majority of my clients clarify their three-year vision. What would you love to be, do and have in your business and in your life three years from now? Most people struggle to answer this. The question taps the imagination, the cauldron for creativity. Some people believe they’re not very creative. If that’s you, simply imagine that you expected one of your family members to be home by 10pm. It’s now 3am and you haven’t heard from them. If you put yourself in this exercise, your imagination is likely to bring countless images to mind. It’s not about whether you have an imagination; it’s whether you put it into service for your desired outcome.
Quick! Come up with a creative idea. Did you? If you answer, “Yes,” you’re in the minority.
The single most important factor for inspiring creativity is mindset. Do you believe you’re creative? Do you believe others are interested in what you create? Sometimes creativity is blocked due to a message we heard in our youth that something we did wasn’t very good. Success can also block the creative flow. Elizabeth Gilbert, author of “Eat, Pray, Love,” said the success of her book made it difficult to write the next one. What’s it like to feel that your best work is probably behind you?
Creativity has a life of its own, and it’s often elusive. Authors have a name for this phenomenon. They call it writer’s block. For artists, it’s the frustration of standing in front of a blank canvas. For the business owner, it’s coming up short when trying to make a product or service stand out in a busy marketplace.
What opens us to the creative muse? Here are three practices you can do starting now:
EXPAND YOUR MIND
First, block time for creativity. Set uninterrupted time aside to tap new ideas. A tweet, answering a text message, taking care of urgent business, being interrupted by a co-worker and the list goes on; these are quite disruptive. Research shows it takes 18 minutes to return to deep thought when distracted. When you increase the time you dedicate to creativity, your mind responds with innovative ideas. Second, seed your mind with diverse points of view. Talk with people who think differently than you. Read material that challenges you. Plan activities that take you outside of your normal environment. Travel, whether local or around the world, exposes us to new people, experiences

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL
THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
Relay For Life. By Colin Anderson
SADLY, IT’S HARD TO MEET A PERSON TODAY who isn’t in some way affected by cancer. While they might not be battling the disease themselves, chances are a parent, grandparent, friend, neighbor or coworker is fighting for their life against this unforgiving affliction. Those battling cancer depend on both financial and emotional support, and you can help provide both at the annual Gig Harbor Relay for Life.
The Gig Harbor event has set a goal of raising $100,000. This money goes to free support and information programs offered to cancer patients, as well as fund research in hopes of one day eradicating cancer. Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. If you would like to participate, you can register as an individual or put your own team together, and there is a company or corporate option as well. If you are unable to attend but would still like to donate, you can do so by visiting the race homepage at Relay.ACSEvents.org. A large number of volunteers are also needed to perform various duties during the event, such as organize and distribute food and water to the participants.
The 2017 relay begins Friday, June 9, and will be held at the Gig Harbor High School track. Volunteers, cancer survivors and community members are currently out gathering pledges for the campaign. Participants in the relay will continually walk, run or jog around the track in support of those battling cancer. The relay begins at 7:15pm Friday evening and continues through the night until 10am Saturday morning.

You may not be in a personal fight with cancer, but probabilities are high you know someone who is. Come out and support those battling the disease, because together we can all make a difference.

Ruth Taylor, a certified hypnotherapist at The Himmer Center, enjoys the one-on-one counseling she does to help her clients achieve individual wellness. Through coaching and hypnosis programs, Dr. Himmer and Taylor are able to address issues that include anxiety, stress, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, attention deficit disorder, intimacy, perfectionism, obsessive-compulsive disorder and addictions. At the Himmer Center, their focus is on healing the whole person. “It is the symbiotic relationship of the brain and the gut. The relationship is critical,” says Taylor. “The entire body just gets better when you heal both mind and gut.”
WELLNESS. IT IS A JOURNEY that is different for each individual. But wellness means much more than just eating healthy and exercising. According to Dr. Richard Himmer, owner of The Himmer Center in Gig Harbor, there are two separate types of wellness— personal and organizational. Personal wellness refers to an individual’s mindful effort to integrate one’s conscious and subconscious. “Until the subconscious integrates with the conscious, it will control your life without consent,” cites Dr. Himmer. Organizational wellness refers to the sum total of an individual’s collective healing and is built upon the principles of mutual trust and respect. This, according to Dr. Himmer, is the basis for healthy and successful relationships. Dr. Himmer’s true passion is hosting group seminars and training. He has his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology and coaches executives, entrepreneurs, couples, parents and individuals who want to transform and grow. His focus is on employee engagement and wellness, team building, leadership coaching, executive coaching, workplace bullying and Keynote speaking.
Dr. Himmer and Ruth Taylor’s success stems from the results they have seen with their clients. “We are effective in what we do,” says Taylor. “It works!” Dr. Himmer has been in the community for 30 years. His wife is from Tacoma, and after visiting the area, they knew Gig Harbor is where they wanted to settle. Taylor moved here seven years ago, and both she and Dr. Himmer agree that the community feel in Gig Harbor is in part due to how many people are actively involved in the community. “People here are very connected,” Taylor says. The Himmer Center is no different. They enjoy their involvement with their church group, which offers services to those in need through the website JustServe.org. Here, the volunteer needs of organizations may be posted, and volunteers can serve various places within the community. From helping to relieve suffering to caring for the poor and needy, those who give of their time and talent help to enhance the quality of life for those right here in Gig Harbor. With the recent closure of the local Positive Changes business, many have been left without the help they need. The Himmer Center is happy to offer discounts and is accepting new clients to fill the void left by the closure.

Taylor and Dr. Himmer encourage both businesses and individuals who are looking for optimal wellness to contact them. After all, change begins from within. “If you’re complacent with your goals and actions, then you are complicit with the result or consequences,” says Dr. Himmer. Taylor adds, “Change begins with just one step; just one positive experience can act as a catalyst. It only takes one step to begin a journey of lifelong learning and healing.”

Food Backpacks 4 Kids Helping one single mom pay it forward | By Dan Aznoff PRIORITIES ARE something that Hannah Lazicki deals with every day. There are days she must decide between spending precious time with her kids and taking one of them to see another medical specialist. However, the single mother of four children is thrilled she is no longer forced to choose between food on the table and medicine to care for her three children with disabilities.
perishable food to help her make meals she would not have the time or the money to afford on her own. The best part, she said, is the canned meat she uses to help supplement dinners that are lacking protein.
Lazicki and her kids are one of the 425 families who receive Crock-Pot recipe ingredients once every week as part of the Food Backpacks 4 Kids program. The Backpack initiative is one of two programs funded through Community Harvest sponsored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation.
“For us, the extra food is especially helpful when we run out of food stamps,” said Lazicki. “The donated meals allow me to spend my cash on toiletries and other essentials—like rent.”
Lazicki said the backpack her kids bring home from school every week is filled with enough non-
The slow-cooker recipes, said Lazicki, not only feed her family, but give her the time to focus on the special needs of her children.
Lazicki and her children survive month to month on the disability payments she receives from the state. “Things are always a little tight around here,” she said with a sigh.

LAZICKI SAID THE BACKPACK HER KIDS BRING HOME FROM SCHOOL EVERY WEEK IS FILLED WITH ENOUGH NONPERISHABLE FOOD TO HELP HER MAKE MEALS SHE WOULD NOT HAVE THE TIME OR THE MONEY TO AFFORD ON HER OWN.
“The donated meals give me the flexibility to spend money on the IVs and wheelchairs my children desperately need.”
said Community Harvest has identified 2,300 young people in the region who are eligible to receive the weekly bounty.
The mother of four is also proud that she can “pay it forward” by sending extra oatmeal and cereals to families in her neighborhood who are not part of the program. Lazicki said the children she helps do not have access to the program at Artondale Elementary School in Gig Harbor because they are either home schooled or do not attend public school.
The goal, according to Gustanski, is to deliver meals to all 425 families identified by the foundation for the 29 weeks between Make a Difference Day and the end of the school year. That is more than 12,000 meals. “We wanted to do more than just give each family a basket of groceries.”
Slow Cookin’ The Crockpot Recipe program was established last year after the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s fourth annual Make a Difference Day when volunteers with the Thanksgiving Brigade boxed hundreds of holiday meals. Executive Director Julie Gustanski said members wanted to find a way to provide nutritious meals for children from low-income households more than just once a year. “Hunger is not just a Third-World problem,” said Gustanski. “We face hunger right here in our own community. More than 60 percent of the children at some of the local schools are on reduced or free lunch programs. We wanted to find a way to feed those kids—and those families—all year long.” The director said one in four children and one in every seven adults in the two-peninsula area do not have the financial resources to have at least one healthy meal every week. Gustanski
Food Backpacks 4 Kids was funded in its first year through a recipe contest that raised almost half of the money needed to feed all of the families. Some of the donations came from grocery stores in the form of non-perishable ingredients, while cash and food items were collected through food drives staged by churches and scout groups. The guidelines for the Crockpot Recipe Contest required that the meal to feed five must be contained within one child’s backpack. The top 29 recipes last year were selected from 46 entries. The Top 12 were prepared at an event sponsored by the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce with professional chefs and caterers serving as the judging panel. Cookbooks with the carefully chosen recipes were sold by the foundation for $12 each as part of the first-year effort. Gustanski is hoping to be even more creative this year. At an estimated $12 per meal, the foundation director is hoping to solicit cash

contributions to cover the cost of the food items in the backpacks. She estimated that $5,000 would be enough to cover the cost for one week’s worth of meals. Contributions to Food Backpacks 4 Kids or any of the other civicoriented activities sponsored by the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation can be made online at GigHarborFoundation.org/GiveONE. Individuals or businesses who want to learn more about providing one or more meals to families in need can contact the Foundation at 253.514.6338. The ultimate goal for the Food Backpack 4 Kids program this year, said Gustanski, would be to have individuals or families donate the ingredients for the 12,000 meals. She said individuals or businesses who want to be part of the solution can shop for the ingredients or “just write a check, and we’ll be happy to do the shopping.” Gustanski predicted the solution will be a combination of donated food items and cash contributions. Hannah Lazicki had a better idea: “Some generous individual could just write a check for $200,000 to help feed all of the hungry children in our community.” Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer in Mukilteo, Washington. For the love of sailing
Whether students have never stepped foot on a boat before or are looking to improve their skills and techniques enough to enter racing, there are experienced sailors eager to help local children gain confidence on the water.
SUMMER ON THE SEA By Colin Anderson • Photos courtesy of Kerrie Andrist Clos & the Sail Race Team FOR MANY IN AND AROUND GIG HARBOR, there is more recreation done on water than on land. While plenty of locals enjoy a good walk, hike or bike ride, many also enjoy paddling their kayak or stand-up paddleboard, a good hard swim or a relaxing cruise around the bay with the wind as propulsion. Sailing can be as relaxing or as intense as you would like it to be, and volunteers from the Gig Harbor Yacht Club are helping introduce this way of life to the next generation. Started in 2010, the Gig Harbor Yacht Club Junior Sail Program is a place where young people in the community can go to learn the finer points of sailing. More than 700 kids and teens ages 6 to 18 have taken part in the program whose vision is to inspire local area youth to have a life-long dedication to and love of sailing. Whether students have never stepped foot on a boat before or are looking to improve their skills and techniques enough to enter racing, there are experienced sailors eager to help local children gain confidence on the water. One of the more popular programs put on through the youth sail program is its summer camps. During the

week of camp, children are divided into age groups and are taught skills based on their experience level. Guppies camp is designed for ages 6 to 8. Here the goal is to get younger children comfortable around water and boats, so the camp is a mixture of land and waterbased education. Students learn basic knot tying, terminology, how wind and sails work together to move the boat, and basic water safety skills. Novice camp is for 8- to 11-year-olds with little to no sailing experience. These students again learn basic water safety and more advanced knot tying as well as basic sailing skills like being able to tack, gibe, steer and trim. Teen Sail Camp is for ages 12 to 18 and teaches young people all the basics as well as working together in twoperson teams. More advanced boat-rigging and seamanship lessons are taught, and this is often when teens decide whether they prefer a more leisurely sailing journey or wish to pursue the racing program. Racing in a regatta is thrilling for all involved as it takes mental sharpness as well as physical endurance. From the 8th grade on, teens who want to add a competitive edge to their sailing skills can join up through the Gig Harbor Yacht Club with summer and/or school-year racing programs. During the summer months, students from the greater Tacoma area join together to form the Narrows Race Team and participate in several competitive regattas. The program runs June through August with students practicing twice per week in preparation for at least five competitions throughout the summer. As school begins, classes and races don’t end for those who are truly developing a passion for the sport. The Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association holds both a fall and spring competitive series. Students will again practice two to three times per week after school and compete throughout the year. This program is open to grades 9 through 12, and students must be enrolled in a local high school to participate. No matter what program your child enrolls it, they will be given instruction by knowledgeable locals who are very familiar with the local waterways. The Yacht Club has three styles of boat for kids and many tracking boats for instructors to closely monitor the activities on the water. But who says only the kids should have all the fun on the water? Whether you have a vessel docked in the harbor, paddleboard, kayak, paddleboat or no watercraft at all, mark your calendars for the first weekend of June for Maritime Gig Festival. The annual celebration of local maritime history, passions and civic pride will be held the weekend of June 3 and 4. Music, vendors, food, drinks and tons of activities dot Harborview Drive next to Skansie Brothers Park. The Maritime Gig Festival has been a local favorite for years drawing people from all over the Northwest to enjoy a beautiful fun summer celebration of one of the most beautiful communities in the area. Back again this year is the Yo’ Ho’ Harbor Grand Parade. Typically around

100 businesses, officials, civic groups and others line up for a fun family parade. If your business or organization wants to participate, you have until May 12 to register if space allows. Savvy locals should already be on the hunt for the perfect natural circle to enter in the ever-popular round rock contest. Cash prizes will be doled out to the five people who find the smoothest and most perfectly rounded rocks or stones. The family fun run is a great way for little ones to burn off a little excess energy before the parade gets going. The short run travels along the parade route as people who’ve lined up early for the parade help cheer on families to the finish line. The first 100 registrants get a fun run T-shirt, so don’t delay. Beautiful customs and factory-restored classics will also be on hand at the annual Wheels on the Water Car Show. Guests can mingle around the park looking at some incredible machines,
often with the owners on hand so you can ask questions about their unique rides. There are 14 categories these vehicles are being judged by, and winners are announced Sunday afternoon. For more information on the Festival, you can follow them on Facebook or check in with the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. The waterway is the lifeblood of the Gig Harbor community as it’s used for both commerce and recreation, drawing visitors to the area which helps grow the local economy. Residents have a passion for water-based recreation, and whether it’s programs teaching kids at an early age to enjoy the lifelong hobby of sailing or a family friendly weekend celebrating the local maritime history, there is clearly great pride in this community. Enjoy another summer on the water!

JACKSON REID: Peninsula High School AT JUST 18 YEARS of age, Peninsula High School senior Jackson Reid has learned what it takes to overcome challenges and succeed. As a member of the football and lacrosse teams, Jackson experienced a major setback his junior year when he suffered two compression fractures in his thoracic spine.

“I played over six weeks with the injury before going to the doctor for X-rays,” said Jackson, whose doctor told him not to play again. “But I went to a spine specialist and was cleared to play. My senior year I made varsity and was a starter both ways and played every game from week one to the state quarterfinals where we lost to Meadowdale,” said Jackson of his football season.

Jackson also received All-League honors this year for both middle linebacker and tight end. He also received the Coaches’ Award from the coaching staff. “[In lacrosse], I’m currently ranked fourth in the state for total points averaging 7.71 points per game,” said Jackson. But his success is not just on the football and lacrosse fields. Jackson received an APA academic excellence award in AP psychology and was selected as a finalist for the National Football Foundation Scholarship banquet this year. He is ranked 17th in his class of 330, has a 3.941 GPA, has taken seven AP classes,

He will also pursue his athletic passion and join the club lacrosse team. “I love the physicality of football, and I enjoy the family feeling in the locker room, but I love lacrosse for its finesse. You don’t have to be the biggest guy or fastest guy to be good at lacrosse, and I’ve always loved that. Lacrosse has a relaxed feeling, and it’s about being cool, calm and relaxed even in the most stressful of situations,” said Jackson. Looking back on his days playing lacrosse and football, Jackson said the best life lesson he has learned was mental toughness.
“I owe it to coaches Filkins and Winquist. They pushed me into taking a zero-hour class [before school],” said Jackson. “They always held me accountable into coming to class on time and coming to all my classes and being present regardless of what happened the night before, just as I would for practice.”

UNCONDITIONAL
IT IS SAID THAT A DOG is man’s best friend. But ask any woman who is involved in the Prison Pet Partnership program, and she will tell you a dog is a woman’s best friend as well. For 35 years, women incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center for Women have been partnering with animals to learn new skills and give them a purpose once they are released from prison.
Prison Pet Partnership provides inmates unique opportunities
According to Executive Director Beth Rivard, Prison Pet Partnership has been a private nonprofit organization since 1990, but the program originated in the early 1980s as a course offered via Tacoma Community College at Washington Corrections Center for Women.

Its formation was a result of a collaborative effort between Sister Pauline, a Dominican nun, and the late Dr. Leo Bustad, former chair of Washington State University’s veterinary program, who believed that inmate rehabilitation could be facilitated by the human-animal bond. “Sister Pauline and Bustad worked cooperatively with Washington State University, Tacoma Community College and the Washington State Department

therapy dogs as well as companion pets placed with families as “paroled pets.” The program has received national attention, including accolades from the Ford Foundation.
Unfortunately, the course was cut from the curriculum, but it was then that community members, staff at the prison and inmates opted to make it a nonprofit.
The program’s mission extends far beyond the prison walls. They provide animal-assisted therapeutic visits to local convalescent centers and also bring the dogs to schools to help students improve reading skills by having dogs listen while they read aloud. Those involved with the program also assist the inmate by helping them search for job opportunities in the community in which she will be released.
While there are animal programs in many prisons across the country, Rivard said that Prison Pet Partnership is unique in that it is the only program that not only provides the service-dog training from beginning to end (some prisons just do puppy raising or shelter dog training), but also has the vocational education piece of the program that provides jobskill training and assists with job placement upon release. They also offer a scholarship program to assist the inmate with continuing education when released.
So just how is money raised for the Prison Pet program? One way is through an app that is benefiting animal rescue operations all over the country. The app, called Walk for a Dog, can be downloaded from Wooftrax.com. Once the app is downloaded, you simply register you and your dog, select a program such as Prison Pet Partnership as your charity, and walk your dog.
Since its beginning, the program has placed more than 700 dogs in the Pacific Northwest. The dogs placed have been service, seizure and

“Wooftrax makes a donation to PPP based on the number of walkers and miles walked. It’s an easy and healthy way to help PPP,” said Rivard. Prison Pet Partnership works with animal shelters and rescue groups for their “train to adopt” program. Dogs are brought into the prison and are provided approximately eight weeks of training by the inmate trainers, then placed for adoption. “Some dogs who demonstrate the temperament for service or therapy work will continue in the training,” said Rivard. But it is not just dogs that take part in the Prison Pet Partnership program; there are also cats as well. “The majority of these cats are foster cats for Harbor Hope Cat Rescue,” said Rivard. While the precise numbers have not been tracked since the inception of the program, Rivard does say that since 2007, they have been able to assist 10 women in pet-related jobs upon their release from prison, which is a 100-percent placement rate.

One of those women was released from prison a few years ago and now lives in Spokane. She is a pet groomer and recently purchased her own home. Rivard added, “She is also now a puppy raiser for one of our puppies in training for service work.” Another woman who was released five years ago is working as a groomer part time and is currently a senior at the University of Washington, where she is on the dean’s list and pursuing her degree in social work. The partnership is mutually beneficial to both pets and inmates, and the statistics are proof that the effect lasts long after the women leave prison. “The recidivism rate for women who graduate from Prison Pet Partnership is less than five percent,” said Rivard, who adds that the last information she had from the Department of Corrections was that the recidivism rate for women inmates was 21 percent. The program is a win-win situation for all involved. Enriching the lives of the inmates, the homeless animals and the community, Prison Pet Partnership provides these women with a purpose, inspiring many of them to turn their lives around.

Diary of a Fat Trainer
By Susan Moore, owner and head coach at Better Gym, Gig Harbor, Washington I’VE BEEN A FITNESS PROFESSIONAL for a long time now and have been involved in many areas of research, from strength, conditioning, movement preparation, post-rehabilitation, military operational preparedness, nutrition and much more. I teach certifications across North America and am a national presenter in the health-and-wellness community. I know how to train and get results. That is until my metabolism went belly up.
put myself through. About six weeks into the program, I started to feel horrible. I had no intention of stopping. It was hard, and I was going to suffer like everyone else until I realized I wasn’t suffering like everyone else—I was very sick. My kidney (I only have one, but it has never been a problem) was failing and started a domino effect of a myriad of other problems in my body. Long story short, my metabolism no longer functioned properly. In a very short time, I gained about 40 pounds. Yes, 40 pounds! Can you imagine an overweight personal trainer/gym owner?
About two years ago, I decided to try a transformation program that I traveled halfway across the world to get educated in. I knew the intense training and high-protein protocol was tough to adhere to, but I could handle it. I couldn’t have my clients do something I wasn’t willing to
I’m supposed to be an expert in all things fitness, yet I was overweight and unable to train. I did every holistic protocol I could safely do, and

Dr. Greg Messer Dr. Keri Messer no matter how healthy I ate, my hormones would not allow my body to burn fat as fuel. Despite my personal struggle, I continued to help scores of people feel and look better than they ever had. I just couldn’t help myself—until I discovered a few things that changed my life. The first thing I found was nutritional fasting. My first thought was that fasting meant starving, which decreases metabolic function; I could not have been more wrong. It is amazing how little the health-andwellness community knows about fasting for health. Through different fasting protocols and now a ketogenic/paleo(ish) eating plan, I have healed my body enough that I am using fat as fuel. Ketogenic is a high-fat, moderate protein and low-carbohydrate plan that can teach your body to use your stored fat as its main source of energy. I have been able to finally start losing the weight I gained. I’m only halfway to my pre-disaster weight, but I’m finally getting there!
clinical research demonstrates a correlation between the amount of acetone detected in the breath and body fat burned, giving you a reliable indicator of fat loss. I’m not the kind of person who likes to leave anything to chance. If I can find a way to detect what my body is burning for fuel, I am absolutely going to take advantage of it. This machine has not just been a game-changer for me but for many of my clients as well. It is incredibly motivating to have real-time feedback that lets you know if the way you are eating and training is going to give you the results you are seeking. I cannot express how happy I am that I am finally getting back to normal. In retrospect, I can honestly say this experience has been turned out to be a positive one for me as a fitness professional. I now have more empathy and am empowered to help people on a level that I previously was unable to. I know what didn’t kill me made me … better.
I also discovered LEVL, a countertop device that detects the concentration of a molecule (acetone) in exhaled breath. Previous

BIG DECISIONS
IMPLANTS INNOVATIVE, EFFICIENT AND HASSLE-FREE BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS AND TANYA A. BROWN, DMD
WE ONCE HAD A PATIENT WHO, upon filling out his new patient forms, wrote “HA!” as his answer to the “How often do you floss” section of the questionnaire. My team had a good laugh about that. Hey, at least he was honest. Flossing is a commonly overlooked part of our daily hygiene routine, but skipping this important step can lead to a multitude of health issues. There are many reasons why we lose a tooth. Often, the best replacement is an implant. Have you ever been faced with a huge, daunting decision? Many patients feel this way when we talk to them about their treatment options. Depending on the patient’s condition, they may have the choice of implant, restorative or removable prosthesis to replace their missing or hopeless tooth. If they are overwhelmed with information, some patients will become paralyzed, unable to make a decision. We know this as “analysis paralysis.” From a patient perspective, “Simplicity breeds compliance. Complexity breeds confusion!” Short sentences are best! Avoid using long words and lengthy sentences. Utilize your team’s talents: The more your team speaks (versus the doctor), the higher the case acceptance. Why would case acceptance go up the more we utilize our team? Patients perceive the staff as facilitating education and giving them a solution to their problem rather than selling them on a service. Training your team to talk for you creates a win-win environment. Aaron Sorkin said, “You know, we get smarter by people treating us smarter. You want to be lifted up and told to lead.” If you want your team to exhibit contagious enthusiasm for
If you want your team to exhibit contagious enthusiasm for implants, train your team to talk for you. implants, train your team to talk for you. Team members typically use shorter sentences and less complex words. Let’s look at some words that can change your patients’ lives: Imagine: Imagine never having to wear a denture again! Imagine chewing your food comfortably! Imagine not having to worry about your smile again! Imagine the dentistry you deserve! Hassle-Free: You’ll never have to take your teeth out at night again! You floss around it like your natural tooth. You can bite into a crunchy apple and corn on the cob again! You can chew more naturally again, and the implants are the best for your digestive system. Lifestyle: Choosing a lifestyle implies that there’s more than one model of “the good life.” The implant fits our natural lifestyle! It’s like getting your natural tooth back again! Plus, implants stabilize the facial bone, leading to a healthier, younger lifestyle. Innovative: Implants are better, more resilient, stronger and longer lasting.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
54
Restore and Rejuvenate: Offer your patient the chance to step back in time to when they had a younger looking appearance. You’ll revitalize your smile! You’ll have a brighter smile and a more youthful look! Efficient: For most of us, this means we’ll get more for less. In essence, implants are a better investment because they don’t normally need to be replaced through the years as compared to a fixed bridge or removable prosthesis. Results: Tell your patients that they will enjoy the results; implant restorations take a bit more time to achieve, but the results are superb! When we buy something, we care about results. We want a tangible benefit … what we can see, hear or feel. Patients have “little patience” for ifs, ands or buts. They don’t tolerate excuses. You’ll need a systematic approach to avoid errors or the perception of an excuse. Once the patient says “yes” to having a dental implant placed, that’s when the planning begins. There are so many options to consider. Will the implant be placed in an immediate extraction site? Will the implant be provisionalized immediately? If so, who will fabricate and place the provisional? Does this need to be coordinated between two offices if there is other restorative treatment being completed simultaneously? Will the implant(s) be placed single stage or 2 stage? Does the patient require pre-placement augmentation or sinus lifts? Who will fabricate the implant surgical guides? As you can see, many choices are available to the practitioner and the patient.

FEAR OF FALLING? HEARING LOSS MAY INCREASE RISK FOR FALLS BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A WRITTEN FOR HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY
ACCORDING TO THE U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four adults aged 65 and older experiences a fall each year, adding up to one fall for every second of every day. The CDC also reports that falls are the leading cause of injuries and injury-related deaths among older adults. Injuries from falls cost Medicare an estimated $31 billion in 2014, and this cost is expected to surge as the population ages, with the financial toll projected to reach $67.7 billion by 2020. Financial costs are not the only concern, as falls can also reduce confidence and increase fear, causing individuals to restrict physical activities. Lessening physical activity leads to reduced muscle strength and impaired balance, and can result in depression due to decreased overall health and dwindling social interaction. For older adults, managing fall risk is an important component of maintaining a high quality of life. Advancing age not only increases the likelihood of falling, but it is also the most significant predictor of hearing loss. According to the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders, approximately 15 percent of adults aged 18 years and older report some difficulty hearing, and nearly 25 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent of those 75 years and older have a disabling hearing loss. The odds of falling increase threefold for even a mild hearing loss, and that risk continues to grow with an increased degree of hearing loss, according to a study published in 2012 by Dr. Lin of Johns Hopkins University and Dr. Ferrucci of the National Institute on Aging. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Laryngoscope in 2016 also stated that the odds of falling were 2.39 times greater for older adults with hearing loss.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
56
The association between hearing loss and fall risk may be explained by the reduced awareness of the environment, balance system dysfunction caused by related inner-ear damage and/or the theory of cognitive load. This theory essentially suggests that attention is required for managing posture and stability, but hearing loss requires more brain power to be dedicated to understanding sounds in the environment, which limits the mental resources available for paying attention to standing and walking. Additional sensory issues, such as visual impairments or peripheral neuropathy (numbness) could cause further overload. Despite the changes that come with age, there are ways to reduce your risk of falling. Some recommendations include: • Talk to your doctor about reducing fall risk, and report any falls. Your medical providers cannot help you if they are not aware of an issue. • Maintain a current list of medications, and talk to your doctor about any that may increase fall risk. • Stay active! Participate in programs that improve balance and strength. • Manage your environment to reduce obstacles that can encourage tripping and falling. • Have your eyes and ears checked annually, and follow provider recommendations regarding use of glasses or hearing devices.
POSTURE AWARENESS MONTH!
TIME TO THINK
WORKING TOWARD SYMMETRY AND STRENGTH BY DR. DAVID ANGELL, DC, CONVERGENT THERAPIES
MAY IS POSTURE AWARENESS month, and, as such, it is an excellent time to think about how our bodies are moving and how we are taking care of ourselves on a daily basis. We should always be thinking about the person we want to be as we age, look for ways to adjust our course and ensure we make it there. Posture is an investment that we must continue to tend to for our entire lives. An investment, which, if cared for, will allow us to live healthier, more capable lives, and, if neglected, will cause pain and sap our energy until we have diminished. It is important to be able to move easily now so that we can continue to move more easily as we age, since movements become more difficult to improve the older we become. However, no matter our age, we can always work toward symmetry and strength. Slumping is the 21st century posture, and the amount of sitting we do is the biggest component. It takes a lot of strength to maintain good posture while sitting, and even then the load on our spine is high. Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic for the Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, and inventor of the treadmill desk is quoted: “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” The posture that we fall into when we sit changes the way our brain controls our muscles when we are standing or doing other activities that increase our chances of injury. OK, so we understand that posture is important and that we should be working on improving it every day, but where do we start? First, it is important to recognize that changing your posture requires a significant amount of focus and energy. It is critical that your diet, exercise and sleep patterns are at healthy levels. Next, we must observe how
because quality of life is earned. our four posture zones stack up on top of each other. From the bottom to the top, the zones are comprised of your lower extremity, pelvis, torso and head. Your posture is made up of how these four zones balance, align and move in everything we do. We must learn about and develop our core in order to improve our balance. To enhance our alignment, we have to exercise in the opposite direction we normally collapse into and continually practice posture exercises to maintain our core and alignment while moving. Once we have improved our balance, alignment and movement, we need to continually maintain what we have gained. It takes less time per day to preserve our posture than to earn it. Every day, strive to work toward a more accurate symmetry and stronger balance to live a better life. This article was largely based on the work of Dr. Steven Weineger. If you would like to read more about improving your posture, visit BodyZone.com

FOR THE AMERICAN ECONOMY to thrive, so must its ports. Each day in communities large and small along the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf coasts, millions of tons of goods are being imported and exported, ready to be sent across the country and across the globe. For companies that do business internationally, ports are the lifeblood that keeps them going. Ports allow travelers to hop from place to place on a myriad of cruise lines and allow our military to strategically place its vessels in defense of our nation. The industry provides well-paying jobs and often is the major employer in seaside communities. The port most of us living in the West are likely most familiar with is the Port of Seattle. With more than 1,500 acres of waterfront, the commerce that happens here is incredible. One of the most diverse ports in the U.S., it includes massive amounts of docking and container storage but also parks, waterfront shopping and dining, cruise-passenger pickup and drop off as well as ferry transportation. While a stroll through this port before a Mariners or Seahawks game shouldn’t be missed, there are also several other port cities in the area where you can experience a wide range of activities without traveling far. Fill up the tank, grab a few snacks and drinks, and get ready to hop from port to port. Perhaps the next most well-known port in the Northwest is just south of Seattle—The Port of Tacoma. In a 2014 study done by Martin
Associations, the company found that the Port of Tacoma directly and indirectly supports 29,000 jobs in the area, generates $3 billion in economic activities, and contributes $223 million in state and local taxes annually. These are just a few of the incredible bits of information you will learn by taking an up-close bus or boat tour offered several times each year. Bus tours are offered February through August this year. Tours are free, but you must register in advance as space is extremely limited. You should plan on spending around 75 minutes shuttling around the port with various stops along the way at points of interest. Children 6 and older are welcome to join in, and anyone 17 or older will need to bring along identification as well. The Port of Tacoma also offers up a special once-a-year tour during the Tacoma Maritime Fest which will take place July 16 and 17. Last year, about 1,200 people took part in these narrated tours that take you onto the boats and explain the port’s history, developments, businesses and customers. It’s a rare opportunity to board these incredible vessels that transport an astonishing amount of goods through the port. At the festival, you can also gain free admission to the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum, help paint the community mural and enjoy live music.

Naval Base Kitsap Now that you’ve seen the massive ports in the Puget Sound, it’s time to slow the pace and explore the quaint communities that fall under the name ‘port’ along the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas. Take Highway 16 out of Tacoma and through Gig Harbor, Burley and Fernwood until you reach the Highway 166 exit toward Port Orchard. Despite being just a ferry ride from Seattle or Bremerton, Port Orchard has remained a relatively small community since its founding in the late 1890s. With less than 14,000 full-time residents, you’ll find a wide array of unique local shops and artists galleries to explore in an easily walkable downtown. The Port Orchard Public Market features daily, seasonal and permanent vendors and is a favorite for both visitors and locals alike. Stretch your legs along the Bay Street Pedestrian Path with great views of the Olympic Mountains and another important port, Naval Base Kitsap, the third-largest Naval base in the country, which is directly across Sinclair Inlet from Port Orchard. Local craft beer can be found at Slaughter County Brewing Company, and an array of restaurants dot the waterfront. All summer long you’ll find Saturday morning farmers markets, first Friday art walks, and free live music in the park on Thursday evenings. Your port road trip continues roughly 30 miles north on Highway 3 until you reach the community of Port Gamble. Here you are surrounded by history as the town grew up around the one-time oldest continually operating mill in the country until its closure in 1995. Port Gamble and the Pope and Talbot Sawmill were founded in 1853, and the waterfront location allowed the mill to ship timber from the Northwest to San Francisco. The mill might be closed, but you’ll find beautifully restored churches and business buildings that transport you back to the mill’s heyday. The Port Gamble Historic Museum is open seven days a week, May through September, and is home to historical items that date back to when the mill was just getting going. Admission is just $4 and kids younger than 6 are free. The entire town is easily walkable, and you’ll find a local coffee roaster as well as several family friendly dining options. Despite being a quaint little town, many are surprised to learn of the Port Gamble Theater Company, now in its sixth year. The company is presenting “Little Women” during July and “Alice in Wonderland” starting in mid-September. If you are enjoying the tranquility of this small community, consider spending a night or two in the Port Gamble Guest Houses which can accommodate eight and 10 guests.
Port Gamble
As you leave Port Gamble you will also be leaving the Kitsap Peninsula across the floating Hood Canal Bridge and entering the Olympic Peninsula. Shortly after crossing, you will encounter the Olympic Peninsula Gateway Visitor’s Center. This is a great pit stop to pick up information for future trips around the Peninsula or exploring Olympic National Park. When leaving the visitor’s center, head north on Highway 19 to the small town of Port Ludlow. While Port Gamble transports you back in time, Port Ludlow takes you into the modern era with high-end residences, restaurants and

and split up the trail by staying at one of the several bed-and-breakfast options along the route. Kayakers also love it here, as there is fastmoving whitewater nearby as well as flat water lakes and open-water sea kayaking. Fishermen can enjoy the variety of species available from salt-water species and shellfish to casting a fly for trout or exploring mountain lakes for game fish. If you don’t have a boat of your own, consider hopping aboard the MV Coho Ferry which transports guests from Port Angeles to Victoria, Canada. The 90-minute ride offers spectacular views as you cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca. With multiple departures from each side daily, you can choose to spend a day, a night or a weekend across the border as the ferry drops you right in Downtown Victoria. There are whale-watching charters, or if you really want an incredible view, rides can be arranged by hot-air balloon.
Port Townsend a championship golf course. The population of this waterfront community continues to increase as planned neighborhoods continue to be built up, and there are many obvious reasons many of the wealthier families in the area are moving here. The Port Ludlow Inn is popular with honeymooners and those looking to enjoy top-notch accommodation in a boutique setting. The inn offers 37 rooms, an award-winning restaurant and stay-andplay golf packages. The nearby Marina has 300 slips that can accommodate vessels up to 200-feet long. A quick peek and you’ll likely see some very impressive boats. Many use this community as a base for exploring the San Juan Islands, but there are also paddleboarding opportunities in the bay and 26 miles of walking and biking trails that line the water and surrounding forest. Port Townsend is next on the list, and if you haven’t been you are in for a treat. The Victorian-era homes and commercial buildings are evident from your arrival. The town has worked hard to keep these buildings preserved, which has in turn drawn many artists and creative types to the area. When they say it seems like something is always going on here, they mean it. There are 17 large celebrations planned for this summer alone; everything from the Port Townsend Film Festival, Wooden
Boat Show, Acoustic Music Festival and the always-popular and one-of-a-kind Brass Screw Confederacy and Steampunk Hootenanny. Many choose to spend a long weekend here as there is so much to see, experience and explore. Just 2 miles from downtown is Fort Worden State Park. A turn-of-the-century Army base is now acres of public park to explore. The Marine Science Center lets kids touch sea creatures and learn about what’s offshore. You can launch your boat, play tennis, have a picnic and even take in a show at the theatre. One of the really unique tours is being able to step inside old artillery bunkers through a guided tour of the Artillery Hill trail. Once back in town, almost every evening is filled with live music, performing arts or visual arts on display. Local farmers provide fresh produce to many of the excellent restaurants which have garnered attention from national media outlets. As with our other port destinations, there is plenty to explore along the waterfront with great beaches and walkways. The final stop on this particular Port Tour is Port Angeles. Many who don’t wish to camp inside Olympic National Park will utilize Port Angeles as their home base for day trips. Biking has become especially popular here with 60 miles of path along the Olympic Discovery Trail. Many will park the car for a couple days

While it might sound like you are traveling forever on this route, remarkably it’s only about 125 miles from Tacoma to Port Angeles. The Port cities are just a few of the incredible communities and unique places to explore in one of the most spectacular stretches in the Northwest. Ports are what created so many of these beautiful communities. Many got their start with just a few hundred brave residents transporting steel or timber to much bigger places. While today many of the ports cater more toward yachts and other pleasure craft, remnants of another time can be found in so many waterside communities along the peninsulas. While some communities maintain an historical resemblance to their early days, others are transforming into more modern time. What they all have in common is a closeknit relationship to the waters that surround them. The summer road trip gets a bad rap, but for individuals, couples and families it really can’t be beat. Gas is cheaper than four plane tickets, and you can explore what you would like on your own schedule. Plan out your entire trip or just hop behind the wheel and stop when something looks interesting; there’s no wrong way to do it. With so many fun places to explore within a hundred-mile stretch, you’ll be spending far less time behind the wheel and far more time in the moment.

CAMPING IN STYLE OR LIVING IN THE LAP OF LUXURY • BY PATTY HUTCHENS WHETHER YOU WANT TO ROUGH IT, ROUGH IT IN STYLE OR STAY IN STYLE AND LUXURY, THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS FOR ANY BUDGET AND TASTE. A SIMPLE SEARCH WILL BRING UP A VARIETY OF OPTIONS, BUT HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHICH ONE’S THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU? WE’VE PICKED OUT A FEW OPTIONS ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES TO HELP YOU NARROW IT DOWN SO YOUR SUMMER CAN BE SPENT YOUR WAY!
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Camping There is nothing better than being in the outdoors, especially when you live in the Northwest! Whether you choose to “rough it” in a tent or prefer to take a camper, there are plenty of campgrounds that provide a beautiful outdoor experience. Before choosing your campsite, decide what amenities are important to you. Are you looking for a place that has minimal resources, or do you prefer a campground that provides easy access to showers and restrooms? Also, make sure you reserve your spot ahead of time. If you are bringing multiple tents or a tent and an RV, be sure you reserve enough space.
Hotel It’s the traditional way, but it is always fun! With so many booking websites to choose from, even the most luxurious hotels can be affordable! With the increase in options when it comes to lodging, hotels are offering more deals. If you are not tied to a specific date, research the rates throughout the week as they vary greatly depending on numerous factors. If you are traveling with kids, many hotels offer breakfast included in the room rate. If you do a lot of traveling, you will want to consider different reward programs that allow you to accumulate free nights.

VRBO Renting a condo or a house can be a lot of fun and provide all the comforts of home. There are several options available in communities that also have a pool where you can relax and enjoy some sunshine while the kids burn off some energy. If you are traveling with other families or plan to go with a group of friends, this option can be very affordable. In addition, you can save money by purchasing groceries and eating in. Some of the condos and homes for rent around the Gorge Amphitheater in Central Washington are a pickup spot for transportation to and from the venue.
Depending upon the size of both you and your vehicle, this is an option many on a tight budget choose. Be aware, however, that safety is a key issue. Choose a place that is a bit out of the way, but not so isolated that it is unsafe. Also, make sure to minimize the time you spend in your vehicle. While old station wagons with fold down seats were perfect for creating a “bed, newer cars do not have the ability to recline as much as older cars did. If your car has rear seats that fold down and provide trunk access, this can provide a larger space in which to stretch out. Enjoy the adventure!

On Location For many, once they reach their destination, they want to give up the car keys and just stay put. Places like the Gorge Amphitheater in Central Washington offer an on-site campground that allows people to come and enjoy the music, whether it is a night or a weekend festival, without ever having to leave. For large events such as Bumpershoot in Seattle, there are several nearby hotels that are just blocks away from the action, which enhances the festival feeling.

here’s a party to be had just about every summer weekend across the Northwest. Celebrations of music, the outdoors, food and drink, our nation’s independence and so much more make for exciting times all across the area. There are many incredible experiences to choose from, and here are some of our favorites.
Washington Brewers Festival Redmond, Washington June 16 - 18 WashingtonBeer.com As the appreciation of craft beer continues to soar, there seem to be more brew fests happening throughout the year in every community; however, the Washington Brewers Festival might just be the largest beer event of the year. Put on by the Washington State Beer Commission, this festival attracts more than 100 Washington breweries serving up more than 500 different craft creations. Both Saturday and Sunday, the event is fun for the entire family and includes a lineup of food trucks and live music, as well as a Kid’s Playground and Root Beer Garden. For those wanting a little exercise beforehand, there will be a 5k run. Guests looking for something other than beer can sample local wines and hard ciders as well. Advanced tickets are available through the Washington Beer Commission, and admission includes eight tasting tickets (with additional tickets available for purchase) and a 4-ounce souvenir mug.
Columbia Cup Tri-Cities, Washington July 28 - 30 WaterFollies.com Hydroplane races take center stage along the Columbia River each summer, and fans of speed certainly get their fill at the Columbia Cup. With races all weekend long, spectators get to witness these incredible machines hit speeds of 160 mph; that’s like traveling a football field in about one second. The Columbia Cup has earned Race Site of the Year three consecutive years for its dedication to the sport and support from fans. The event includes a remarkable air show, up-close views of the hydroplanes through pit tours, an autograph session and several Kids Zones. General tickets are available as well as hosted areas and RV parking and hookups.
Seafair Weekend Seattle, Washington August 4 - 6 Seafair.com Since the 1950s, this annual celebration of air and sea is an unofficial holiday for the greater Seattle community. You’ll witness ultrafast hydroplane races and waterski and wakeboard competitions on Lake Washington. The Blue Angels take to the sky for an amazing air show followed by many other military planes both past and present. Genesee Park is filled with food and fun for the entire family. Also taking place August 1 through 6 is the annual Seafair Fleet Week and Boeing Maritime Celebration, celebrating and honoring the Navy. Several classes of ships will be docked in the Port of Seattle, and you can take free tours aboard the massive vessels.

As in previous years, it all begins with a spectacular Parade of Sail on June 15 from Vashon Island to Tacoma, and continues with the opportunity for visitors to not only step aboard the ships, but also to set sail during the following days of the event. Outdoor Brewery Concerts Missoula, Montana June - September BigSkyBrew.com / KettleHouse.com As a natural stopping point for travelers road tripping between Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, Missoula sees its fair share of summer visitors, and lately, it’s seeing big-time music acts making summer stops as well. For the past several years, Big Sky Brewing Co., famous for its Moose Drool Brown Ale, has added an outdoor stage behind its brew house. This summer’s lineup includes Sublime, Ben Harper, The Decemberists, UB40 featuring Matisyahu and more. Also wanting to get in on the beautiful summer nights, local favorite KettleHouse Brewing Co. is opening a brand new riverside amphitheatre just east of town with a lineup that includes Ween, Primus, Lyle Lovett, Pat Benatar and Melissa Etheridge. T
he mile-high city is the gateway to some of the most famous mountains in the country. In the wintertime, there are almost as many ski and snowboard bags coming through the airport as actual luggage. People arrive and often immediately head west toward Snowmass Village, Aspen, Breckenridge and Telluride. In the summer, locals head north of town to nearby Boulder and Fort Collins as a starting point for biking, fly fishing and hiking. The beauty of Estes Park, the famous Stanley Hotel and Rocky Mountain National Park draws visitors from around the world. With all to do north and west of Denver, the south often gets overlooked, but savvy outdoor enthusiasts know of a very special place not far off the beaten path.
sandstone formations with Pikes Peak as the backdrop. There are endless activities to do here, and unbelievably, admission is completely free. Visitor & Nature Center Before venturing off into the park, make the time to stop in at the visitor center for some background information on what you are about to experience. Here you will find exhibits on local geology, flora and fauna, what animals you might discover in the park and a history of native people who inhabited the lands. There is also a dinosaur on display that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. There are interactive maps and fliers to help you plan your trip.
Colorado Springs is perhaps best known as the home of the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center, but just outside of downtown you’ll find one of the more unique natural areas in the West in the Garden of the Gods. Garden of the Gods is a registered National Natural Landmark that encompasses some 1,300 acres right in the backyard of Colorado Springs. The natural area is famous for towering

one of several guided options. One fun way to experience the park is by a bus tour. This is no ordinary tour bus, as each bus was built in 1909 and is more like a trolley with open-air seating for 14, offering great views along the way. These tours last 45 minutes and are $17 per person. Booking a Jeep tour will get you into places others can’t, and tours range from 75 to 90 minutes and start at $30 per person. You can even see the park through a guided Segway tour which features several stops and plenty of historical information all at a leisurely pace. For those wanting to keep the experience as affordable as possible, there are both selfguided and free-guided nature walks. Led by local naturalists and volunteers, these nature walks run every 30 minutes with each guide offering different historical perspectives about the Garden of the Gods. Outdoor Activities While many come for a glimpse of the scenery, others are looking to add in some exercise and explore as many corners of the park as possible. There are about 15 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails within Garden of the Gods. They range from short and easy ½ mile trails like the Ridge Trail, which climbs about 100 feet to give you a higher perspective of the surrounding towering sandstone formations, to the 3-mile Chambers/Bretag/Palmer trail, which circles a large portion of the park through rocky trails. As with all natural areas, hikers and bikers are to stay on designated trails as to not disrupt local vegetation or create additional erosion issues. Rock Climbing With so many formations within Garden of the Gods, the area has become a beacon for seasoned rock climbers as well as those interested in attempting the sport for the first time. If you are comfortable in your abilities, you can pick up a map at the visitors’ office and select a climb that challenges you. New climbers can arrange with local companies who can help determine skill level and where the best locations will be. There are designated routes set up all over the park, and luckily, if someone is already tackling the face you were interested in, there are dozens of other faces and formations to scale. While climbing is free, all climbers do need to register for a permit, which can be done at the visitors’ center or online before you go.

If you happen to be in town or visiting a park on a Thursday, you can do the weekly 5k run with the locals. Park volunteers have carved out five different 5k routes, and you can choose whichever course you would like. Runners go anytime between 4 and 6pm, and like most everything else in the park, it’s free to participate. Those looking for additional history on how the area’s unique formations and landscape came about can see a new movie in the Geo-Trekker Theater. The film takes you back more than one billion years, showing what the area looked like and some of the dinosaurs and other creatures that inhabited it. The 20-minute movie is $6 for adults and $4 for children. After a day of sightseeing, hiking, climbing or biking, stop by the café for a drink and a bite to eat. With more than two-million annual visitors to Garden of the Gods, it’s no secret that this is a special place. Since its discovery in the late 1800s, visitors have been inspired by the one-of-a-kind landscapes available so close to town. Organized competitive runs and road
While Colorado is home to a spectacular amount of parks, recreation areas, quaint small towns and wilderness camping, one of its best and most accessible parks is right in Colorado Springs. If your next ski trip or summer adventure takes you through Denver, schedule a day to head south and see this incredibly unique natural area. Whether by foot, bike or vehicle, you’ll be amazed by your surroundings and will leave with some incredible photos and memories as well.
races are held inside the park, as those who enjoy outdoor activities tend to enjoy them even more in such a beautiful setting. Garden of the Gods is a photographer’s dream, with an immense amount of contrast in colors, shades and angles, all with snowcapped mountains as a backdrop. There are many species of birds that make the area home as well as foxes, deer and bighorn sheep, all just an hour and a half from the moment you leave the airport.

The most popular varieties of mint worldwide are apple mint, spearmint and peppermint. Easy to grow—best in wet environments and moist soil— with a fragrant smell, mint is almost an exclusively perennial herb. Rich in vitamins A, C and B2, it complements both sweet and savory dishes. Leaf color varies from dark green to purple, blue and even pale yellow.

GIG HARBOR BEER FESTIVAL
WE LIKE TO GIVE BACK! Please ask about our Military and Senior Discounts
Celebration of all things ale and lager By Colin Anderson THERE’S NOT MUCH BETTER than a tasty craft brew on a sunny spring day, and you’ll have an opportunity to try some of the best and most unique beers in our area at the annual Gig Harbor Beer Festival. Now in its fifth year, coordinators once again expect this immensely popular event to sell out before the doors officially open. A link to purchase tickets can be found online at GigHarborBeerFestival.com. This year’s celebration of all things ale and lager is Saturday, May 20, noon to 5pm. Tickets are $30 each and get you admission into the festival, a five-ounce pilsner-style tasting mug to take home, and eight tickets for sampling from various local and regional brewers. Additional tasting tickets can be purchased at the event. There are no food vendors inside the event at the Uptown Pavilion, but attendees are welcome to bring food into the festival. With the continued explosion of craft breweries across the Northwest, those in attendance will see several familiar brands as well as a couple you might not have seen or yet tasted. Events like the Gig Harbor Beer Festival are a great way to taste a variety of beers, from hopforward double IPAs to fruit-infused wheat beers, without having to buy a whole six pack to see if you like it. Those who say they don’t care for a particular style might try a beer from a different brewer and realize they actually do. Even better, this festival is a fundraiser for the Gig Harbor Kiwanis, which supports many community services and youth programs. If you’re considering attending the festival, get your tickets now so you don’t miss out. Enjoy a beer with friends and neighbors, try something new, learn a little and know you’re supporting a great cause at the 2017 Gig Harbor Beer Festival.
