THEY ARE THE FIRST EYES WE LOOK INTO and the one person who loves us unconditionally. Our mothers play many roles—caretaker, cook, chauffeur, nurse and so much more. And in today’s world, most mothers also work outside the home, leaving little time for themselves. This month we celebrate Mother’s Day, a time set aside to honor those who have sacrificed so much to give their children all they can. While there are many ways to celebrate and gifts we can give, there are other unique things we can do that will mean much more than flowers. Think about all that your mother has done for you and write her a note of thanks. But more than that, be sure to mention important life lessons she has taught you. Did she teach you compassion? Did she demonstrate a strong work ethic which has influenced you? If you are able to spend time with your mother on Mother’s Day, bring along photos that portray some of your most special memories with your mom. Better yet, make a photo collage or go online to

If you have a strained relationship with your mother, maybe extend some grace and pray for a glimpse of happiness and focus on what happy times there have been. Lastly, remember those who have been a mother figure to you. Extend your gratitude to them as well. We at Like Media wish all the mothers a very happy Mother’s Day.

t’s time to start thinking about summer remodel projects. For many of us, the long winter months spent indoors have left us feeling like our homes could use a little sprucing up. One place to start is with new flooring, but there are so many types to choose from. Following is an overview of some of the options available on the market today. One of the newest and most popular flooring on the market is LV (luxury vinyl). LV products typically come in modular planks or tiles that click together, much like a traditional laminate floor. This type of flooring includes a waterproof top layer, followed by a composite core and a backing of some kind. Oftentimes, the backing is a pad made out of a waterproof rubberized product, or sometimes cork, but it can also simply be hard plastic. This product is growing in

popularity because it is durable and highly water-resistant, and it can be made to look like virtually any wood, tile or even stone on the planet. With the advent of luxury vinyl products, laminate flooring (sometimes known by the brand name of Pergo) has certainly lost some of its prior popularity. However, this flooring choice still leads the pack for DIY-ers, as it is relatively easy to install and durable. Though laminate design options are more limited than LV products, it is still the most economical of all plank flooring options. It’s a good choice for those looking to upgrade from carpet without spending a fortune on flooring and remains popular with builders and contractors due to its durability and ease of install. Wood flooring is a confusing topic for many people, which

One of the newest and most popular flooring on the market is LV (luxury vinyl). is a little ironic, considering it’s been around longer than any other type of flooring, short of stone and earth! There are two basic types of manufactured wood floor: solid and engineered. Solid wood is just what you think it might be—a solid plank of wood finished with some type of sealant. These floors are what I hear people referring to as “real wood.” However, engineered woods are also “real wood.” However, they typically include a veneered wear surface over a secondary wood substrate. This allows the customer to get the look of solid hardwood without some of the issues that can be associated with it. Engineered woods offer additional tensile strength through the use of cross layering and other manufacturing techniques that have
been specially designed for the longevity of the product. While both luxury vinyl and laminate products can successfully be installed by nonprofessionals, as long as the manufacturer instructions are strictly followed, I highly recommend allowing a professional to install wood floors. They will have the tools and knowhow to make sure that your wood floors last a lifetime. Any flooring upgrade is an investment, and being educated in the strengths and weaknesses of each type of hard surface will help ensure you make the right choice for your home this spring!

Kids Just Want to Have Fun! M A X I M I Z I N G Y O U R K I D S ’ S U M M E R S C H E D U L E I N A T W O - H O M E F A M I LY By Felicia Soleil, JD

ummer is fast approaching. As a divorced or separated parent with kids, have you figured out your summer schedule yet? In a flexible coparenting relationship, summertime offers up plenty of opportunities to maximize your non-work hours with your children and help them experience the freedom and fun that childhood summers should be.
off early in the year for the summer. Ideally, parents will work together to accommodate employer-related vacation restrictions of the other party. If overlap of requested vacation is unavoidable, parents can alternate who gets first pick on vacation times each year. (For example, Mom gets first pick even-numbered years and Dad gets odd-numbered years.)
Often, the residential schedule (parenting plan) that you and your co-parent initially created revolves around developing a structured schedule to maximize success for your children during the school year. A good plan often minimizes transfers between households during the school week and has the kids settled down and prepared on Sunday nights before the new school week begins. They know when they will see each parent, whether for a dinner visit, overnight or to chaperone them to their practices and events that week. They know their homework will be completed and on time, and in which home their uniforms, instruments and sports gear are kept.
Additionally, avoid back-to-back vacations. It is not a competition as to who will have the greater adventure, and exhausted kids don’t make for fun vacations. Kids need unstructured time at home with each parent as well. Swimming, fishing, bike-riding, camping in the backyard and just hanging out with friends without the demands of homework and early bedtimes can be enjoyed even more when children don’t have to worry about a tight parenting schedule. Can you and your coparent agree on letting your “kids be kids” during this time?
However, the summer schedule can provide a welcome release from all this structure for everyone if both parents can be flexible and communicate with one another, and value creating a laid-back summer of childhood memories for their kids. I always recommend getting together in early May to start this planning so each parent can share in memorable vacations and hopefully enjoy extra time with their children where circumstances allow. Many families have a predictable time when they take vacation each year, and some parents are dependent on the policies of their employer and need to request time
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
As long as both parents agree on any needed supervision for the children during work hours, such as day camps, extended families, fun teenage babysitters, etc., parents who mutually agree that summer break should be a special time for their kids can depart from a structured school schedule. With a little advance planning, you can enhance not only your children’s summer schedule but also your own. Felicia Soleil helps her clients in achieving a resolution that fosters both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning for them and their families so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential.

LOCAL GIRLS HEADING TO STEM-SPECIFIC SUMMER CAMP
T
By Colin Anderson Photos Courtesy of AAUW - Washington
Roughly 150 girls from across the state will be invited to attend a Tech Trek camp this summer.
oday more than ever, women are entering the professional workforce armed with college degrees and a willingness to do all it takes to succeed. There are more female CEOs than at any other time in our nation’s history, and working mothers are commonplace at most businesses big and small. While this trend is encouraging, it’s not to say that all things are now equal. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Washington women make 78 cents to every dollar men make at the same position, ranking 35th in the country when it comes to pay equality.
and develops self-confidence in making meaningful choices for their futures.”
AAUW is a national charitable nonprofit organization that works to change the climate for women and girls. This is done through education, research, advocacy and philanthropy. One of the organization’s most successful programs is its summer Tech Trek camp for girls who’ve just completed the seventh grade.
Roughly 150 girls from across the state will be invited to attend a Tech Trek camp this summer at either Pacific Lutheran University in mid-July or Eastern Washington University in late-July/early August. Girls completing seventh grade who have shown an interest in science and math are nominated by their teachers for the program.
“Girls are traditionally underserved in STEM opportunities and careers,” said Gig Harbor AAUW Chapter President Barbara Schmit. “Tech Trek provides an outstanding educational opportunity for young women that opens their eyes to possibilities

Tech Trek got its start in California more than 20 years ago when AAUW member Marie Wolbach decided to use recently acquired grant money to open a week-long math and science camp for girls on the Stanford University campus. The success prompted an additional 10 camps in California alone, and in 2013 the organization decided to take the program nationwide. Ten states now have at least one Tech Trek including Washington, which is adding a second camp this summer.
“Math and science teachers may nominate up to five seventh grade girls based upon their interest, aptitude and the benefit that they would receive from this amazing opportunity,” said Schmit.

Nominees then complete an application including an essay. Based upon the nomination information and the application, students go through an interview with Tech Trek AAUW Gig Harbor Committee. After the interview in all of the middle schools, girls are selected and notified of their selection. If selected, the girls in the Gig Harbor area are responsible for only a $50 registration fee as the remaining $950 cost for Tech Trek is covered by AAUW through donations, sponsorships and scholarships. The Gig Harbor chapter of AAUW will be helping to send 11 of those girls to camp this summer. This is the seventh year Gig Harbor AAUW will be sponsoring girls to go to camp. Once at camp, the goal is for young girls to be able to see themselves as future scientists, mathematicians, engineers and computer specialists. This is done through hands-on learning from professionals in multiple fields as well as previous campers who have continued their interest in fields of technology. One day the girls might be building and programming robots and the next they are learning about cyber security and coding computer and phone applications. They learn chemistry, how to extract DNA and dissect marine life. They get a grasp of physics by studying the effects of roller coasters on the human body, learn medical skills and even crime scene investigation techniques. “These opportunities are few and far between. Having such an outstanding experience in our area for local girls is amazing,” said Tech Trek/STEM Program Chair Claudia Thompson.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
AAUW has 35 branches across the state of Washington but also reaches out to areas where they don’t currently have a group. In fact, in 2018, 11 girls came from parts of the state where AAUW does not currently have a branch. Students come back from camp with new skills and confidence. AAUW gets to hear feedback and is always happy to hear about the impact Tech Trek is having on these young minds: “This experience has let me know of other options for me to pursue in my life.” “I loved everything that I learned and I made so many great friends.” “It was great to learn so much and to stay on a college campus! It gave me some idea of how it will be to go to college.” “Best experience of my life!” The Pacific Lutheran Camp runs July 14 through the 20, and the Eastern Washington University Camp runs July 28 through August 3. AAUW is seeking volunteers for both camps in several areas. The girls will be staying in campus dorms so dorm monitors age 21 and older are needed. Health aides and student counselors are also needed as well as teachers and workshop presenters. Financial donations that go toward paying the girls’ camp costs are also always welcomed. You’ll find an easy ‘donate’ link on the organization’s website at AAUW-WA.aauw.net.

t’s another beautiful day in the harbor, and there’s reason to celebrate, as Ms. Saigon Vietnamese Cuisine opened its doors last month to eager diners ready to take a seat at the table and discover the flavors of Vietnam.
Dza Thao Le, known to many as LeLe, is the woman behind the restaurant. And she certainly is not new to the industry. Through hard work, dedication and the support of those around her, she opened her first restaurant in Tacoma’s Hilltop Neighborhood in 2001. Over the last 17 years, LeLe opened three more restaurants, making Ms. Saigon her fifth. At Ms. Saigon Vietnamese Cuisine, the comfortably modern and sophisticated atmosphere seats 20 to 25 patrons indoors, offering outdoor seating for as many as 16. A large black-and-white mural of Vietnam from days past adorns the wall, accompanied by other beautiful Vietnam photographs. Ms. Saigon is a family affair, with three generations working in the restaurant: LeLe's two teenage daughters work the register, her brother assists in food plating and presentation, her sister is a waitress, and her mother helps prep. When it comes to the menu, guests will find everything they could want when it comes to Vietnamese food, and it’s delicious and served fresh. LeLe and her staff strive to create an authentic, traditional taste of her homeland of Southern Asia to serve to each and every guest. All items are made to

order with the freshest ingredients, and their love and passion for what they do is poured into every dish they prepare. They offer an extensive menu of small plates, Vietnamese sandwiches, salads and entrees, and guests have the option to have many of these dishes prepared vegetarian, vegan or gluten free. Small plates include a variety of items, from the Garden Roll with pork, prawns, rice noodles, celery, bean sprouts and garden-fresh herbs rolled in rice paper and served with their house peanut sauces; Crab Rangoon, a crisp wonton dumpling filled with cream cheese and crab, served with their house-made sweet chili sauce; and Ms. Saigon Wrap of grilled marinated chicken or tofu, avocado, cucumber, lettuce, sliced carrot and sriracha aioli, wrapped in a flour tortilla. All Bahn Mi, their Vietnamese sandwiches, include French baguette, pate, mayo, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, cilantro and jalapeno with your choice of grilled pork, beef, chicken, combo of cured pork, sliced jambon and head cheese, or vegetarian ham. Entree selections include items like the Bo Ne, a Vietnamese sizzling marinated flank steak served on a skillet with white onions, pate and a fried egg, served with a side salad and french fries, bread or rice; and Sweet and Sour Salmon sautéed in their house sweet and sour sauce, pineapples, bell peppers and onions, served with a side of rice.

Additional menu items include Calamari, Honey Chicken, Tofu Cake, Honey Walnut Prawns and a variety of salads—like the Papaya Salad made with green papaya, Thai basil and peanuts mixed in lime vinaigrette and served with grilled pork. Ms. Saigon is the only restaurant in the harbor that makes fresh pressed juices! The menu is complemented by a variety of fresh house-made drinks: fresh coconut drink, hot or iced tea, fruit smoothies, refresh tea, milk tea and a variety of fruit teas. Try the Uji Matcha, a blend of organic matcha with vanilla ice cream and Boba or coffee jelly. LeLe is living the American dream. At the age of 21, she and her parents left everything behind to come to the United States as South Vietnamese refugees, leaving their home of Saigon—thus the name of the restaurant— and made a new life in Tacoma. It is there that LeLe met her husband, and together they have four children. LeLe and her family relocated to Gig Harbor, calling it home for the past decade. LeLe truly appreciates this peaceful community, the kind, caring people within it and the support they have shown her over the years. LeLe invites you to dine at Ms. Saigon Vietnamese Cuisine and take in the flavors, atmosphere and authentic hospitality. They are open daily from 11am to 9pm.

GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS GIG HARBOR COULD SEE NEW INDOOR RECREATION FACILITY PENMET PARKS CONDUCTING FEASIBILITY STUDY BY ANNELI FOGT
F
or the past six months, residents of Gig Harbor have been without an indoor recreation center. But the Peninsula Metropolitan Park District is working to change that and is in the midst of determining the feasibility of a 190,000-square-foot indoor recreation facility that would replace the Performance Golf Center on 14th Avenue Northwest. If the project is given the green light after the feasibility study’s expected conclusion in midSeptember, the new facility would contain a soccer field, flag football field, pickleball
and tennis courts, a walking track, indoor playground, and 12 multipurpose classrooms for community activities. But Peninsula Metropolitan Park District (PenMet Parks) Interim Executive Director Glenn Akramoff is careful to note that the project is far from finalized. “Should we? Can we? And will we? Those are the questions we’re looking to answer with this study,” he says. The study is also addressing preliminary designs, permits and establishing a budget—which is currently $25 million, but could change as the process continues.
GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Earlier this year, under former Executive Director Richard Fink, PenMet Parks signed a purchase-and-sale agreement for the current Performance Golf Center property at 2416 14th Avenue Northwest. According to a February 2019 News Tribune article, voter approval of a levy lid lift in 2017 gave the district the money to purchase the property for about $4.3 million. It’s a site the district has been eyeing for some time, Akramoff said. As a newly formed district in 2006, PenMet Parks considered the location for a park, as it was already zoned for recreational use, but it was too ambitious of a project for the new
entity. Nine years later, the district returned to the golf center site with revived interest. Then, PetMet Parks’ Indoor Soccer Center— which served an estimated 65,000 residents annually—closed in November of 2018. The closing of that facility left not only a void for local soccer enthusiasts who have to travel to Bremerton or Tacoma for an indoor facility, but it also left multiple PenMet Parks employees without offices. An August 2018 News Tribune article reported that staff were working out of portables at Sehmel Park until a new administrative space was found.
“That’s what really created some energy to get moving on an indoor facility,” Akramoff said, explaining that the center could also be used for large community gatherings. “We are trying to fill the needs that are out there right now.” The soccer center off 36th Street Northwest was owned by Tacoma Screw and leased to PenMet on a year-to-year basis, former PenMet Executive Director Terry Lee told the News Tribune in January of 2018. “At some point they are going to want to use that site for distribution,” he said in the 2018 article.

That time came last fall, and the district’s lease expired in November. Since then, the district has considered multiple locations for a new recreation facility, including the PetMet Parks-owned Peninsula Gardens property, the Boys & Girls Club of Gig Harbor, and Performance Golf Center. After a feasibility study completed on the three locations in late-2018, district staff determined that the Peninsula Gardens site was too expensive for development and would not deliver adequate amenities for the investment. But the district has seen two executive directors since the decision to purchase the golf facility. Richard Fink left the district earlier this year and told the News Tribune in February that the district was working “fairly fast” on the new recreation center. He said the golf facility would be torn down and the remaining building would be remodeled this summer and open by fall of 2019 with classrooms and programs for the public. Fink told the Tribune the recreation facility would be constructed and “hopefully available to the public by spring 2020.” But Glenn says that since the district doesn’t even own the golf property yet and no decisions about the buildings or their future have been made, the district is “looking to provide a lot of opportunities for public comment.” Those opportunities include a May 8 meeting at the Gig Harbor Civic Center at 6:30pm. Information about the facility and recent updates can be found at PenMetParks.org/ recreationcenter. Residents can call or email Chuck Cuzzetto, PenMet Park District's marketing specialist, with questions or concerns at 253.888.0645 or ccuzzetto@penmetparks.org. The feasibility study is expected to be complete by September 13. If the project is deemed possible—the property is suitable for the proposed facility, planned improvements are permitted and the cost of the project is within PetMet Parks’ means—the board will move ahead with the purchase of the property. “We want to make sure to listen to everyone’s feedback,” Akramoff says.

“It’s taught me that trying new things really helps you to grow in each respective one, and that having diverse interests can only help for the future,” said Anna. She has played soccer and softball all four years and played basketball her freshman through junior years, and has received eight varsity letters. In addition, Anna has assisted her basketball and soccer teams in winning state championships. “As starting point guard, I helped my team to win the 2018 3A Basketball State Championship. I also helped my soccer team as captain to win the 2018 3A State

Championship,” said Anna, who also helped her fastpitch team go to state all three years so far. “We’re hoping for another state appearance this year,” she said. Anna is the captain for her fastpitch team this year and was awarded honorable mention all-state center-fielder in 2018. In addition, Anna has been enrolled in eight AP classes and has a GPA of 3.945. She has also been a part of National Honors Society every year of high school. “I also carried out a self-directed yearlong research project my junior year on the limitations of government and commercial space organizations,” shared Anna. In the fall she plans to attend Montana State University and has been accepted into the honors college. She will study chemical engineering and minor in building energy systems.

“After that, my plan is to attend graduate school and pursue a career in space exploration. I’m really interested in different forms and uses of energy and would like to work on ways to increase sustainability in space,” said Anna, who also plans to do a one-year study abroad program in England. “After that my plan is to attend graduate school. I’m not playing a sport in college, but I do plan on playing club soccer, basketball and training for a marathon.” Anna said that what she enjoys most about playing sports is the challenge of achieving a goal together. “I’m a very competitive person and work hard on my own to make myself a better player, but what I enjoy even more is forming a team that can come together and be better than the parts within it,” she shared. “I’ve been on a lot of teams through soccer, basketball and softball for both high school and club, and the recipe for a good team was never the same. There are
different ages, perspectives and life experiences that people come to a team with, and having the chance to learn from my teammates and come together to achieve a goal is what makes me love playing these sports so much.” Anna credits her coach, Megan Murray, with teaching her many lessons in life, the most important of which was “grit.” “There’s no doubt in my mind that she prepared all of us to be mentally tough … She taught me to be strong and disciplined day in and out at practice. It wasn’t always easy, but Coach taught me that in order to achieve great things, nothing ever is.”

THE CAMP IS FLOODED WITH POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM CARETAKERS WHO ARE FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR WHAT CAMP STAND BY ME PROVIDES THEM. “Campers write their own skits, songs, and create dance numbers for talent shows and have the opportunity to have a captive audience appreciate their hard work,” said Camp Director Angela Cox. “And when the crowd goes wild, you can see how much it means to have their creativity and talent appreciated.” During the weeklong sessions, campers snack on s’mores, learn to swim and also get to build lifelong friendships with their fellow campers. “The friendships many of these campers make at camp result in them staying in touch throughout the year,” she said. “We have even had some campers get married!”
adults are ages 15 to 35; and adult camps are for those 22 and older. The counselor-to-camper ratio is very low, with a maximum ratio of three campers to one counselor. One-to-one ratios are also available to campers who need constant supervision, have specific medical needs or need additional care away from a group setting. Camp is run by a wide range of people serving as counselors, activity instructors, nurses and lifeguards. Many are students pursuing a degree in special education, occupational therapy or therapeutic recreation, and some come from as far away as Italy and Tanzania. “All staff members receive a week of comprehensive orientation and training prior to our first session,” said Angela.
Camp Stand by Me is located on 17 acres with both water and trail access. Cabins are modern, and there is an indoor swimming pool, dining hall, craft building and recreation lodge to go alongside the vast amount of open space to explore.
In addition to the summer camp offered to those with disabilities, Easterseals recognizes that caring for these individuals often falls squarely on family and caregivers. Constant care can be both physically and emotionally draining, so a Weekend Respite Camp is also available.
There are six-day and eight-day sessions offered June through August for different age groups. Children’s camps are for ages 7 to 21; teen/young

Launched in the summer of 2018, United Real Estate Puget Sound West opened their first office in the Pacific Northwest in the heart of Gig Harbor on March 1 of this year. They invited the community to join them for their grand opening on April 25 for a ribbon cutting and party to celebrate. You can trust that you will be in good hands with co-owners Mel Santos, Steve and Miriam (Mim) Tyson. Mel, manager and designated broker of the firm, has more than 35 years of industry experience, starting his career in the title insurance industry followed by the mortgage loan industry. Real estate sales was the direction he was to pursue, with the hopes of evolving into a real estate brokerage firm. That dream has come true—and he’s enjoying every moment of it. businesses in the area, according to Mel, is that they are a 100 percent commission company. “That means our brokers receive 100 percent commission on all their real estate closings. They only pay a per-closing fee to us per closing, as compared to paying their brokerage a percentage of the entire commission earned. It’s a fact brokers retain more of their hard-earned commissions at United Real Estate Puget Sound West.” They offer residential and commercial real estate services for sellers, buyers, lessors and lessees, as well as investors. Whatever their clients‘ needs, Mel and his team will have their best interest in mind when it comes to accomplishing their goals. “This is a great company! Being associated with United Real Estate has been more enjoyable than I could ever have imagined! The people at all levels, other owners as well as home office staff and senior management, are more than helpful and genuine,” smiles Mel. “Furthermore, real estate brokers that are associated with our firm have the opportunity to make more money. They can then reinvest it into their own business to build it up and become more profitable or spend it on making their lives’ and families’ lives more enjoyable.” Mel personally takes care of his associated brokers the same as all of his clients. “My slogan is: ‘When people ask what you do, I tell them whatever

He has served on various committees such as the Star Awards, Rotary Women’s Prison program as an instructor, The First Tee of South Puget Sound, and was president for the 2017-2018 Rotary year. “We believe that we have a duty to be a positive contributor to the people and institutions that are the fabric of the communities we serve,” says Mel. “As this business grows, we as a company will focus our efforts in areas that we as a group can make a measurable impact.” If you are in the market to buy, sell or invest, the team at United Real Estate Puget Sound West is ready to put their expertise to work for you. SEED CYCLING Balance Hormones Naturally By Jarett Jackson, Co-founder, Elli-vated Goods
EVERY WOMAN WHO IS LIVING IN TODAY'S ENVIRONMENT DEALS WITH A BOMBARDMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS that are driving hormones crazy. It is not just the environment, however, that is driving hormones bonkers—it also could be your lifestyle. Chronic stress, use of birth control pills, a diet high in refined sugar and a lack of exercise are all participating factors for problems with hormonal balance, and these imbalances are leading to an extreme version of PMS called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). PMDD comes with the physical symptoms of PMS but with a more severe emotional component that can include symptoms like severe mood swings, irritability, and depressive and suicidal thoughts that recur monthly. Researchers are still investigating the exact mechanism of PMDD but have generally accepted that it is caused by a drop in levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, causing a shift in mood. Serotonin is a chemical neurotransmitter in the brain that is responsible for feelings of well-being and happiness.
Many doctors and members of the medical community would recommend using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which may be appropriate in some severe cases. However, naturopathic doctors are starting to promote more of a holistic approach to balancing hormones. One, in particular, that has piqued a lot of interest within the health and wellness community is a method called seed cycling. Seed cycling is a natural method to support your hormones during the two stages of your menstrual cycle utilizing the nutrients found in seeds. By increasing estrogen in the first phase and progesterone in the second, seed cycling can help relieve PMDD, PMS, increase fertility, ease pain from conditions like ovarian cysts, endometriosis and PCOS, and regulate irregular cycles. It can be effective for women who are menstruating, premenopause, postpartum and post-menopause.

About one cup of red grapes a day can help suppress the abnormal cell formation that leads to most types of breast cancer, according to a recent study in Cancer Prevention Research. Resveratrol, a natural compound found in grapes, grape juice and red wine, may prevent estrogen from reacting with DNA molecules, which can lead to cells becoming cancerous, scientists say.

HORMONES.
Follicular Phase begins on the first day of menstruation. Estrogen levels start low and steadily increase to prepare for ovulation. To keep estrogen levels in balance, we cycle with flax seeds that contain phytoestrogens, which adapt to the body’s estrogen needs during this phase. If estrogen levels get too high, the lignans in flax seeds can bind to the excess so it can be eliminated from the body. We also cycle with pumpkin seeds, which are high in zinc to support progesterone. Pumpkin seeds have a ton of tryptophan in them, which helps support healthy serotonin levels. Luteal Phase begins the day after ovulation. This phase is brought on by a sudden drop in estrogen right after ovulation. Progesterone levels begin to steadily rise to thicken the uterine lining. Estrogen also increases here to prepare for the menstrual cycle, but if estrogen gets too high, PMS symptoms and painful periods can occur. Progesterone is the hormone that keeps estrogen in check, so the focus here is to encourage the body to make progesterone. During this phase, we cycle with sesame seeds, which are high in zinc and selenium and block excess estrogen, all essential for hormone balance. We also cycle with sunflower seeds, which are high in vitamin E and selenium to support progesterone levels.
In addition to the seeds, the following herbs and adaptogens are recommended during both of the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle: Nettle: Nettle is a blood-purifier because it supports the liver and kidneys while gently detoxing the body. Nettle helps to decrease heavy menstrual flow by making your period lighter and reducing the severity of cramps. It increases milk supply for nursing women, supports the adrenals and supports the thyroid gland. Ashwagandha: Everyone knows the lovely symptoms associated with PMS! Ashwagandha helps to boost mood and prevents fatigue, irritability, mood swings and anxiety by nourishing the adrenals and thyroid. Holy Basil: Holy basil contains iron, which can help lower stress. It may also help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, bloating, irritability and reduce anxiety. It also may help control blood sugar levels. Nutritional Yeast: Nutritional yeast is chockfull of B vitamins, which help reduce stress, nervousness and PMS symptoms. Himalayan Salt: We are all too familiar with the salty food cravings associated with PMS. Therefore, the nutrient-dense pink Himalayan salt is recommended because it is rich in trace minerals potassium, calcium and iron, helping the body rid itself of the excess water retention associated with PMS symptoms.

MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS Dizziness and giddiness
Whole Person
By Mariel C. Kraus, OTR/L
W
hen we were children, we enjoyed spinning until we dropped. We giggled, held our head in our hands and fell on the lawn as we looked up to watch the clouds, treetops and the faces of our playmates above us churning like the spin cycle of a clothes dryer. Unfortunately, to many people, this sensation can feel sickening and can surprise us when it happens out of the blue or after an unfriendly event such as a head injury, whiplash or a medical condition. Eleven years ago, I was very congested and blew my nose a bit too hard, and the next thing I felt was that same kind of spinning after being on the teacup ride at the fair. I became nauseous and fell to my knees. I became clammy, and cold sweats took over my body as I crawled to the edge of my bed to hold on to something I knew wasn’t moving. I prayed for God to stop the spinning. As soon as I could get an appointment, I saw an ear and balance specialist who made the diagnosis of Perilymph Fistula. I have had a few mild occurrences since then but have learned to manage the condition well. However, this event changed how I respond to roller coasters and swings (which I used to love). It even made me more sensitive to the acceleration and cabin pressure in airplanes— mostly in smaller commercial aircraft. The inner ear structures involved in balance and vertigo symptoms belong to the vestibular system, which is located below the eyes. There are more than 25 adult vestibular disorders, but children can also suffer from vestibular dysfunction, and the leading type is due to concussions. In this short article, we will only briefly discuss the most common type

of adult vestibular disorder, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV occurs when tiny calcium carbonate crystals are jarred out of their permanent place in the vestibular system. BPPV is defined and described as follows: Benign: not life-threatening Paroxysmal: comes on suddenly Positional: certain positions or movements will trigger symptoms Vertigo: the sensation of spinning—not the fun type!
in Body, Home, & Community!
Parkinson’s Comprehensive Therapies Post-Concussion Syndrome Automobile Injuries Balance & Vertigo
BPPV treatment involves proper assessment to determine where those dislodged ear crystals traveled to within the tiny labyrinth and surrounding spaces, then reposition them with quick head movements (called maneuvers) to lead them back to home base. Clinicians who perform these maneuvers have taken extra courses to learn how to assess and administer them appropriately. Occupational therapists (OTs) are experts in returning patients back to their pre-injury roles utilizing therapeutic solutions for the skills of living. They will add functional tasks to treatments after the repositioning maneuvers; teach patients symptom management; and teach adaptive body mechanics to keep them independent with their self-care tasks because bending down during selfcare tasks can provoke debilitating symptoms. If you or someone you know have experienced dizziness without the “giddiness” and would like to read the full version of this article, please visit IntegrativeBody.net/blog.

MAY IS “BETTER HEARING MONTH”
A MAJOR PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE.
DO YOU HAVE UNTREATED HEARING LOSS?
HEARING LOSS IS THE THIRD
BY KAY FRALLIC, MA, AUDIOLOGIST HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY
DISEASE CONDITION IN THE U.S.
H
earing loss is an invisible handicap that gradually sneaks up on many of us. Because of its normally painless and gradual onset, hearing loss is easier to ignore or minimize than other physical conditions. Many of us who suffer from hearing loss do not seek advice until the problem creates undue stress for those who communicate with us. Our family members and friends may bring up our hearing problem many times over many years, trying to convince us to take some action. Not until it creates unbearable relationship conflict and embarrassment do we reluctantly agree to a professional hearing evaluation. Then after finally receiving confirmation of our hearing loss we may continue to procrastinate more until we eventually accept help. By then it has become a major issue in our lives and in the lives of those who desire to stay connected with us. How common is the problem? Untreated hearing loss is a major public health issue. Hearing loss is the third most common chronic disease condition in the U.S. It affects 12 percent of children and about 15 percent of all adults.* In groups over 60 years of age, prevalence rates increase dramatically. Hearing loss affects a quarter of those aged 65 to 74. Half of all people in the U.S. over age 70 have disabling hearing loss. **

UNTREATED HEARING LOSS IS
What are the known consequences of untreated hearing loss? Untreated hearing loss impacts mental functioning. A recent study shows that adults with untreated hearing loss performed more poorly on cognitive tests and were more than twice as likely to have mild cognitive impairment, suggesting that hearing loss could be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Poor or ineffective communication increases frustration and irritability, leading to anxiety and depression. Impaired communication leads to social isolation, loneliness, avoidance or withdrawal from social situations. Social isolation increases the risk of mortality by 30 percent, similar to the risk of smoking and obesity. In children, hearing loss causes delayed speech, delayed language and poor academic performance. What are the benefits of treating hearing loss? The use of hearing devices is positively related

Modern hearing technology, when fitted correctly by hearing health-care professionals, improves auditory ability, speech intelligibility and supports better health outcomes. Improving hearing has positive effects on anxiety, depression, health status and quality of life. *** Researchers postulate that early identification and treatment of hearing loss might lead to reducing the risk of cognitive decline (Fields, 2017). S H O E B OX DOES THE SHOE FIT?
By Darcie Miller, Balance In Light Reflexology
A Holistic approach to improved health
I
f these are familiar phrases for you, “My shoes are killing me” or “I can’t wait to get these shoes off my feet,” I encourage you to please, remove them from your precious feet and never wear those shoes again. And, if they are new shoes, return them for a refund or exchange. Shoes that fit your feet correctly do not have to be broken in, and if someone offers to stretch them for you, try another size or brand. Last month, I talked about your feet and how important they are in your overall health and well-being. Wearing shoes that do not fit correctly can create conditions such as blisters, bunions, hammertoes, claw toes, corns and plantar fasciitis. You may also find yourself fatigued and more tired during the day. Wearing the wrong size shoes can be harmful to you; they create friction, which causes a negative response on reflex points. If your shoes are too tight or small, they can squeeze reflex areas and may be the cause of headaches, knee, hip and low back pain, elevated blood pressure from the pain or discomfort as well as anxiety and tension. It is not much fun to miss out on an enjoyable activity because your feet and body hurt too much from your shoes. Here are some tips for optimal shoe fit: • Toes fit into the toe box comfortably and are not squeezed together • Heal fits snuggly without rubbing or sliding up and down
• Arch is supported but still able to flex as you walk • Shoes stay on your feet when you walk with no effort • Your body and feet feel good when you put them on • Wear the appropriate shoes for the activity. Please do not wear flip-flops for a hike or to ride a bike. • Your shoe should look like the shape of a foot. • Do not buy a larger size to accommodate your toes fitting comfortably in the shoes. Look for a different width. • Have your feet measured; they do change in size as you grow older.

A trained and licensed reflexologist can measure your feet and make suggestions for the type of shoe and fit that would be optimal for you. Reflexology is also helpful with any foot pain from plantar fasciitis or other foot, ankle, leg, hip, knee, back, shoulder and neck pain you may be experiencing. Each session is tailored to meet your goals and expectations. All systems of your body can be worked through reflex points in your feet, hands or ears. Wearing shoes that do not fit properly can also affect your posture and how you walk. Stay tuned for more fascinating information.

our most useful tool, your brain needs to be challenged just like your muscles do to stay strong. Especially as we age, it’s important to keep the mind sharp and active—studies have shown that an active brain can ward against Alzheimer’s and dementia. Here are some fun ways to keep your noggin in shape. Play! Many teens are loath to hearing that playing video games kills brain cells and are bad for our health. But what if that wasn’t exactly true? Recent studies show some video games challenge the brain and promote healthy aging. Playing an active video game like Nintendo Wii not only offers physical benefits but it can increase attention span, sharpen reflexes and improve your ability to quickly process information. Board games, puzzles and card games have similar benefits for the brain. The National Institute on Aging says that certain games stimulate brain cells, keeping neural pathways in shape. Find a game requiring plenty of concentration, reasoning and memorization such as Yahtzee, Scrabble, Pinochle and Sudoku. Once you’ve mastered one, learn a new one to keep your brain on the move. Read! Reading isn’t just a peaceful way to spend an afternoon. Studies show it can help

delay the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia. In fact, many people of all ages find that reading the newspaper daily at a set time, over coffee or breakfast for example, will keep you informed and educated about the world and improve your brain health. Another great way to keep your nose in a book is to join a book club. The scheduled reading will keep you on track, and you’ll enjoy the added benefit of socializing with fellow readers. Learn! It’s never too late to learn something new. Push your boundaries and try something different. Whether it’s learning to Skype to stay connected with far-away family or learning a new recipe from a friend, challenging yourself yields many benefits. Studies show that learning as we age helps reduce cognitive decline associated with aging and promotes a healthy self-image. Many colleges encourage older adults to sit in on classes and “audit” them, giving you the benefits of learning without the added stress of exams. THE TRUTH ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS Are they right for you? By Rhonda Savage, DDS, Uptown Dental Gig Harbor
IMPLANTS ARE A MAN-MADE ROOT.
F
ourteen years ago, Kevin came to my dental office worried about his front teeth. He wanted a nicer looking smile, but there were complications from orthodontic care he’d received when he was young. His front teeth had very short roots and cavities. Kevin was entering the working world and was worried about the appearance of his teeth. We talked about three options: implants, bridgework or splinting his upper front teeth together on the tongue side and placing veneers. With short roots, some dentist would feel that implants would be the best. It certainly was a good option, but in a paper I published in a scientific, peer-reviewed dental journal, I argued, “What if he keeps these teeth five years?” “Where will we be technologically with implants in the next five years?” “What if the teeth go 10 or 15 years?” Kevin came back after the 14 years. He’d had an accidental blow to his face and one of the veneers I’d placed came off. It was time to place implants. If you’re considering implants, technology and materials have improved and costs have come down due to competition in the implant market. Implants are a man-made root. They’re very strong, hassle free and state of the art. You do have to keep them clean because while they won’t get cavities, you can lose an implant due to gum disease. The Philips Sonicare brushes, the AirFloss, Butler soft picks and an antibiotic liquid called chlorhexidine are important tools to use with implant maintenance.
THEY’RE VERY STRONG, HASSLE FREE AND STATE OF THE ART.

You can also lose an implant due to excessive bite forces, which normally result from clenching or grinding. Most patients with implants should be wearing nighttime protection, such as a night guard or an oral sleep apnea appliance. With implants, the process can be quick if the implant can be placed the same day as tooth removal. But, that may not be the best treatment process, especially if there is any sign of infection. There’s a stepwise process if there’s any sign of infection: tooth removal, bone grafting, healing time, implant placement then creation of the restoration. Did you know you can have implants to support a denture and get rid of that loose lower denture? Implant-supported crown and bridgework or the “All on Four” technology is amazing! You may need bone grafting if the tooth has been missing for a while. Bone grafting for one tooth or many teeth provides a scaffold for your bone to grow around. I know what you’re thinking: “This sounds painful!” I understand how you feel but, for most patients, placement of an implant is less uncomfortable than the removal of a tooth. Implant dentistry is a big decision. It’s important to look at the training and credentials of the dentist and seek a second opinion if you have questions or concerns. You can look and feel better with implants as they help maintain the bone in your face. Without teeth or implants, you lose the bone in the lower third of your face. But the great news is, with today’s technology, you can look and feel younger, plus chew and eat healthier for the rest of your life!

On Final
Approach Determined and resolute, trans-Pacific rower continues his quest BY DAN AZNOFF PHOTOS COURTESY OF JACOB HENDRICKSON
O
ff course and months behind schedule, Jacob Hendrickson continues to propel his custom-made row boat toward what he hopes will be a triumphant landfall in Australia.
The former Air Force pilot began his marathon journey in July 2018 for what had been charted to be a 9,150-nautical mile journey from Neah Bay in the northwestern corner of Washington state to Perth on the west coast of Australia. He has admitted the schedule was an optimistic view of a daunting physical and mental challenge for one man to accomplish alone. Hendrickson has been tracked by a team on the mainland who have stood by in case the adventurer ran into forces of Mother Nature that threatened his survival. He also had an emergency beacon stowed in his protected cabin that connected to a satellite operated by the Federal Communication Commission. Early entries in his weekly blogs at JacobAdoram.com allowed anybody to keep up with his observations and growing doubts about the magnitude of the challenge he had taken on. His initial blogs allowed followers to share his sea-level observations and his musing about the journey he had undertaken. He has rowed his custom-built 28-foot Emerson with prevailing currents and often against unpredictable weather patterns that threw him hundreds of miles off course. As of mid-April, Hendrickson was meandering east of the Solomon Islands and true north of New Caledonia with a 10.7 mile-per-hour wind at his back. The aviator was forced to make a decision last December at the fivemonth point of his crossing that he later described as “not really a decision at all.” He had lowered his sea anchor due to a low-pressure system that was apparently passing north of the Hawaiian Islands. He waited and drifted before contemplating the safe choice of turning back toward Hawaii because he was running low on provisions. “Should I continue past Hawaii as planned? We already know it's not as planned; I'm a couple of months behind schedule. Should I continue past Hawaii even though I'm short on food? That's the real question. “We also know there is no question, I'll continue.”
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
But that’s when Hendrickson also showed his first signs of doubt. “The wheels haven't fallen off yet, or the rudder, or the rudder drive that sounds like imminent death (I'm working on it). Pending catastrophe between here and Hawaii, I'll continue.” He welcomed a visitor to his solitary journey on Day No. 189 when a blue-footed Booby checked out the unusual craft before finally coming in for a social call. “The Booby is interested in Emerson,” Hendrickson wrote. “Between passes low in the troughs, he hesitates directly above the boat, eyes darting left and right. The tail feathers spread, the wings broaden, giving the Booby an extra few seconds of reconnaissance before slipping back into a trough. On the next pass, the Booby commits—it’s time for a landing. Emerson is 28-feet long, with plenty of flat surfaces. This Booby instead decides to land on the thin edge of the raised hardtop, about 3 feet from my face. “He ignores me entirely.” The solo sailor admitted having an extended conversation with the unusual sea bird, admitting to the Booby that he was rowing and not paddling like a bird on the surface of the water. The conversations with himself evolved into trite observations of his surroundings.

“I don't have cup holders anywhere, with the exception of makeshift devices constructed with 550 parachute cord. It's just a thin rope, so the improvised cup holders only hold until about 35 degrees of roll. After which, I have a projectile coffee mug on my hands.” That was the same day that the native of Austin, Texas, faced the reality that he would no longer be able to update his Garmin map because the device had caught fire through what was an apparent short in the charging cable. “Well, it was more of a red, smoldering, smoking, rubber dripping situation,” he wrote. “Everything is under control, just no more text messages.” The fighter pilot spent as many hours as he could observing and supervising the construction of his custom-built rowboat at Schooner Boatworks in Portland, Oregon. Hendrickson flew A-10 Warthogs in Afghanistan while he saved up enough money and recruited sponsors to pay the hundreds of thousands of dollars he estimated would be needed for the solo crossing. The boat was the concept for the ocean-going rowboat, the last boat designed by the legendary boat designer Eric Sponberg before his retirement. Hendrickson’s boat was featured in an article on the famed designer authored for an issue of “Boat Builder” magazine. Sponberg was so proud of the craft he designed for the Air Force pilot, he included it on his personal website. For his safety, Hendrickson has worn a four-point harness to prevent him from being tossed overboard in rough seas. His 28-foot boat weighed only 22 pounds before being stocked with provisions for the voyage. The would-be captain was on hand to be part of the testing of the boat while under construction. The innovative design of the craft allowed it to right itself even if it was toppled over by high waves. “I sat in the boat with the four-point harness when the boat was flipped during a test run,” he recalled. “My head was under water for only a few moments before the boat righted itself and I was vertical again.” The safety precautions went beyond the design of

the craft. Hendrickson said the row boat was equipped with the latest in electronics to guard him against any unforeseen situations. He described the high-tech safety measures his own Risk Management Plan. By the time Hendrickson made his decision to forge ahead on that fateful afternoon, imagination had become his best form of entertainment. That included many lengthy conversations with himself. Early entries in his blog were focused on the physical challenge, including descriptions of the aches that riddled his body. “Physically, I'm holding up well,” he wrote on December 5 of last year. “I'm not taking medications for any ailments, so I'd say that's excellent. I'm still working through various joint and muscle pains, but nothing worth complaining about.” By Day No. 230 on March 6 of this year he was much more philosophical. “I can't think of anything I know with certainty.
Not even 1+1=2 works anymore, since apparently on the quantum scale 1+1 doesn't just mean 2. It seems we don't need absolute certainty to survive, since we are all here. The stories of our ancestors say we don't need certainty, we need something called faith. Faith isn't knowing either, it's something else. “As far as I can tell, nobody truly knows anything. It's obviously terribly unproductive to just declare nobody knows anything.” The images and impressions that he had held inside for so long as a cadet at the Air Force Academy and being ordered to deliver deadly weapons against unsuspecting enemies that were only specs in the sand when he flew sorties in Afghanistan had suddenly become vivid images that surrounded him on his small craft in the middle of the Pacific. “I know there are some things in life that improve my situation, and others that are detrimental, and sometimes I get it wrong,” he wrote in his blog on one especially dark night. “I know feelings influence my decisions in some manner even if I don't understand how

or why. I know there are certain ways to act that are acceptable, and I know I've gotten that wrong too. ‘It's like a self-correcting sine wave, overshooting certainty, oscillating closer and closer to some semblance of knowledge, but never truly arriving. Maybe somewhere in that narrowing oscillation lies wisdom.” Hendrickson had hoped his experience as an aviator together with his working knowledge of navigation would allow him to take on the challenge many said was impossible. The currents and the winds at sea level, he said, present a different range of challenges than flying Mach 1.0 at 30,000 feet. “The currents can act like the wind, but that’s where the similarities end,” he explained. “For a journey of this length, I had to make considerations as to the types of freeze-dried foods I could take along, how much toothpaste to pack, how much butane I would need to boil water, what type of music would inspire me and, most importantly, when I need to deploy the sea anchor.”

When he passed into the Southern Hemisphere, the Milky Way and other familiar constellations were no longer in their usual place in the night sky. Hendrickson began his journey with a full complement of electronic equipment to help guide him across the lonely stretches of ocean. But he continued to rely on his sextant and his compass to remain true to his desire to duplicate the efforts of sea captains who sailed the uncharted seas centuries ago. “I've determined I'm unable to visualize how the earth is oriented within our galaxy using casual observation. I keep looking at the band of Milky Way rotating above our heads, then imagine that we are also in that Milky Way, then imagine the earth spinning and orbiting within some arm of the Milky Way, but unsure where I am relative to the band of stars above,” he wrote. “Up, down, north, south, all that gets confused in my head, mainly because I'm not sure if there's a north for the galaxy?” Then his thoughts passed from philosophy to physics. “Is the location of where we think the Big Bang took place, the cosmic north? How have I not figured this out before?” And then beyond the Earth sciences.
The images and impressions that he had held inside for so long as a cadet at the Air Force Academy. “The sound rushes back in. Awake again. The sensation of waking always fascinates me. Especially the sound. It's the conscious awareness that sound is again available for sensory input that is peculiar. It feels like a forgotten crescendo found an opening back into space and time.” He wrote that he was certain that he would run out of the pre-packaged, high-protein meals he had stored below deck. Hendrickson contemplated eating less but eventually utilized the fishing gear he had brought along to catch some fresh meat.

Hendrickson was realistic about the degree of difficulty he had created for himself before he made his first pull on an oar. He was aware that his physical limitations or forces beyond his control could force him off course enough that he could miss his ultimate goal altogether. “Odds are that I very well may end up in Hawaii or California,” he confided with friends. “Wherever my journey ends, it will be a valuable learning experience for my life.” At his present rate and direction, Hendrickson could make landfall on the Solomon Islands or the tiny atoll of Vanuatu before he reaches his ultimate goal of Australia. Regardless of where he sets foot on dry land, the solo navigator told friends he is looking forward to sitting down at a table for a meal of food that is not dehydrated and not freezedried. Making Lifelong Memories
Summer camp benefits youth for many reasons BY BY PATTY HUTCHENS
I
t’s what childhood memories are made of. Summer camp for many is a time to try new activities, meet new friends and gain some independence from Mom and Dad. But the benefits extend far beyond that and can teach children values that will help guide them through life.
One of the most important things to realize is that it is not easy for some children to make friends, and the bonding that occurs in a camp setting is far different than when one is in school or engaged in athletics. At overnight camp in particular, kids are living together and experiencing life without distractions. In this setting, they can really forge a bond unlike any other friendship. With counselors present to make sure all are included, it can put a parent’s mind at ease wondering if their child will fit in and be accepted. While it may be hard to send your child to an overnight camp, you may want to start out with a camp that isn’t so long, and I’m sure by the end they will be asking if they can stay longer next time. Technology in today’s world has exploded exponentially, making it harder than ever to become “unplugged.” Unfortunately, connecting oneon-one and in person has become less frequent. Taking a break from technology is something we all should do, but rarely act upon. Allowing your child to do so will allow him or her time to connect with others, learn from positive role models such as camp counselors and gain a greater appreciation of nature, outdoor activities and things that keep their mind and body engaged. And hopefully the break from technology will translate to less screen time away from camp as well. A child who has attended camp is likely to develop a sense of independence earlier than those who may not attend camp. The growth of a child can be amazing when the parent or parents are actually absent (but under other adult supervision). And it doesn’t stop there. Most people who have sent a child to college have remarked how much the young adult has “grown up” after only one semester away from home. With that independence also comes a sense of empowerment—something that will serve them well in life. Living together for a period of time at camp can also teach children the concept of teamwork. Whether it is working together on a project, helping one another solve challenges or simply turning to one another for advice, living and experiencing each day together can build a strong bond and give a child, who may not otherwise be on an athletic team, a sense of what it is like to be part of a team. Teaching a child how
GigHarborLivingLocal.com
69
to be a team player will give them the tools they need to build good and long-lasting relationships throughout their lives. Trying new activities and finding things they enjoy is a great way to build a child’s self-confidence—something that will definitely benefit them as they go through life. It is natural for a child to feel more pressure with his or her parents watching, so camp is a great opportunity to explore various activities. A child’s first time doing anything, whether it is paddling a canoe, swimming or riding a horse, can be activities that may push them out of their comfort zone, but doing these things while being supported by camp counselors, in a safe environment, can do much to build their self-confidence. There are so many different kinds of camps that it is important to explore what one is right for your child. Do they want to learn more about a particular activity or sport? Investigate what camps are available that will help teach your child more about these skills or topics. For children with special needs or who may have special medical needs such as diabetes, going to a camp that caters to those needs can open a whole new world to them. It can help them realize that they are not alone in their world. Connecting with other kids who face the same daily challenges they do can provide a newfound confidence. And for those who have suffered a major loss in their lives, many hospice organizations provide a camp for kids who are grieving.

Camp can be expensive, but there are ones available that provide scholarships or even payment on a sliding scale. Don’t let cost be a deterrent to providing lifelong memories for your child. While there are countless long-term benefits to sending your child to overnight camp, it can be tough on both kids and parents. Some ways to make the transition easier is to visit the camp prior to attending. Many offer open houses or will gladly provide a tour to families who are interested. It is also helpful to sign your children up to attend camp with a friend, sibling or other relative. It’s always nice to see a familiar face, especially if you are feeling a bit homesick. Lastly, go the old-fashioned route of sending letters to your child. In your correspondence, be sure to not include things that may make them feel homesick. Avoid details of the “fun” things going on at home or how much you miss them. Instead, make the letters encouraging and inquire about their activities. Whatever you decide, know that sending your child to camp is an opportunity to give them a life-long gift—a gift of memories, learning, developing new skills and connecting with others whom they may have never had the opportunity to meet if it wasn’t for that special summer at camp.

TYPES OF CAMPS TO SUIT YOUR CHILD’S TASTE BY COLIN ANDERSON
ummer is nearly here, and unless you plan on keeping the kids busy every day on your own, it’s time to register for summer camp. Camp offers kids of all ages a chance to meet new friends, develop skills, learn something new, find a lifelong hobby and allows Mom and Dad a bit of breathing room as well. There are thousands of camps across the country focusing on a variety of interests.
Sports Camps If your child is moving on from learning how to play a sport to a competitive team, athletic camps are a great way to improve their skills during the off-season. In summer, many universities, community colleges, high schools and AAU groups put together weeklong camps. Instructors are typically current coaches and players, and children get advice and coaching from those who are dedicated to the sport. If your child is serious about pursuing top-tier competition during high school and looking at furthering a sports career upon graduation, it’s best to get them in front of team representatives at an early age. There are also plenty of camps out there for kids who just want to learn to play golf or tennis, improve their ice skating or try out a new sport. Art Camps An unfortunate reality for many schools across the country is the slashing of funding for the arts. Kids being able to express themselves through drawing and painting, acting and theatre, or music is vital to helping create a well-rounded individual. Art camps focus on bringing out the creative side in a young mind while also helping kids break out of their comfort zone. Theatre camps work on acting and performing skills in a group setting and, at the end of the week, campers put on a show in front of a live audience. Practicing an instrument alone all summer isn’t ideal, but music camps

allow your musician to get back in a group setting. Those who like to draw, paint and sculpt can learn advanced techniques from professional artists. Spiritual/Religious Camps Churches were some of the first organizations to begin putting together summer camps for children, realizing that learning about faith in an environment that also allows kids to burn off some energy, meet new friends and be without Mom and Dad for a few days was highly beneficial. These camps are all a little different but most incorporate teaching of the faith in dealing with everyday situations. There are Bible study camps that are typically more faith-driven and outdoor recreation camps that tend to encourage children to meet and interact with new kids of a similar faith. Check with your church as even if they do not offer one there is likely a regional faith-based camp they can put you in touch with. Wilderness/Outdoors Camps Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts aren’t the only campers who can experience the great outdoors. Many communities have summer camps with lodges in the wilderness or on the shores of a lake. Kids can swim and learn to fish or canoe. Campers can practice archery, arts and crafts, and learn to build a fire as well as other wilderness survival skills. The YMCA is a great resource for weeklong day camps that again focus on building new relationships, skills and confidence. Many of these camps are also cell-phone free, so kids learn how to put the phone and video games down for awhile and communicate face-toface with their peers.

Education Camps The summer slip has been well documented as those students not in year-round school often take a bit of a step back in the learning process when they return to school in the fall. Summer classes can help keep the mind sharp. Students who might be struggling on a particular subject receive more attention from educators allowing them a better chance at success. College-prep courses are often offered as well, and students can study for Advanced Placement tests that, if passed, can often knock out a couple of college credits while they are still in high school. While these camps are all tried and true, there are also hundreds of unique experiences out there for those looking at a new challenge or something a little more out of the box. NASA offers Space Camps at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and also at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Here students learn robotics and get to speak directly with astronauts who have been to outer space. Microsoft is offering free summer technology classes at all of its local stores. DigiGirlz Coding is offered to girls 11 through 18 and is taught by professional women in the tech industry. Kids ages 6 and older can learn basic coding of games like Minecraft and Harry Potter Kano. And if you thought summer camp was only for kids, don’t worry—there is a place for grownups too! Adults-only camps are beginning to grow in popularity as grownups look to relive some of their favorite childhood memories now with other adults and a different perspective on the world. These include all your favorite camp games, crafts and activities often mixed in with a few adult beverages as well. No matter the camp, giving your child an opportunity to meet new friends, challenge themselves and be on their own for a short while will be something that will likely stick with them for years to come.

T
here is a scene at the end of the movie “A Walk in the Clouds” when a horrific fire destroys a family’s vineyards. All is not lost with the discovery of an old root which the family will use to reestablish the vineyards. For this wine tour of Mendocino County, the focus is on some of the original families, the roots of the wine industry in the area. These are the fourth and fifth generations of Italian immigrants, many growing grapes for more than 100 years. With names like Brutocao, Graziano, Parducci, Barra and Testa, their wines reflect this heritage. Mendocino County is a climatically diverse region bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, redwood forests to the north and split by the Coastal Mountain Range. Within these extremes are warm valleys with lots of sun perfect for growing grapes. If you are a red wine lover, one of the best ways to experience Mendocino wine is with Coro Mendocino. This is the first wine in the United States to brand itself similar to a European appellation with their strict rules. Each wine passes through four blind tastings before it is declared worthy of the Coro Mendocino label. “Coro was established to show off our world-class grapes and the innovative people associated with them; generations of family farming that has since brought new farmers and ranchers to this great agricultural community we call Mendocino County,” says Hoss Milone, winemaker for Brutocao Cellars. “Zinfandel makes Coro unique. Cabernet is grown all over the world, but only California has Zin and only Mendocino County

has a Zin blend that is Coro. Currently our 2015 vintage is for sale. Every summer is when we release. Our next release event for the 2016 Coro is on July 16, 2019, with 11 wineries offering tastings of their own individual Coros at the Mendocino Music Festival in the iconic Village of Mendocino on the coast. “The establishment of Coro started over 15 years ago when a group of Mendocino county winemakers got together to discuss a project that could define what Mendocino winemaking was all about. We started with Zinfandel, but the beauty of the project has been the Old-World varietals that are such an important part of each unique blend, and it showcases the diversity of the grapes grown in this county,” says Steve Brutocao, president and CEO of Brutocao Family Vineyards. For a very authentic stay, choose the Testa House as your home during your visit. This lovely craftsmen-style three-bedroom farmhouse was built in 1927 by the original Italian immigrants who farmed the land. This vintage home is filled with original features and old Testa family photos yet has all the modern conveniences for a comfortable stay. “Staying at our Testa House is truly something special. It is a place to get away and relax but still feel right at home. You wake up and have your coffee to the waterfront view and end the day with a glass of wine on the back porch overlooking the vineyard. At Testa you are surrounded

by 106 years of history, beautiful vineyards, a working winery, old rustic barns and our Tasting Room, which is just steps from the house. There is truly nothing else like it," says Maria Martinson, a fourth-generation winemaker and owner of the Testa Ranch. Begin or end your wine tasting day at the Testa Tasting Room. At each stop of your tasting journey, be sure and try the Coro Mendocino; these red blends are a work of art with each winemaker showcasing their skills. It is interesting to taste each winemaker’s Coro Mendocino and to compare the differences. Not far from Testa are Barra of Mendocino and Parducci tasting rooms. If you prefer to picnic at the wineries, plan to swing by the Redwood Valley Market, a cute little local store with a deli. After your first round of tastings head into Ukiah to School Street, which has local boutiques and a bookstore. For lunch visit Schat's Bakery for fresh soups, sandwiches and salads or to pick up some treats for breakfast at the Testa House. The Bottle Shop is very popular with locals. This deli makes great sandwiches, and don’t forget to add the Mendo mustard. They have a variety of pasta salads and other grab-and-go items to pack a picnic. In the afternoon head to Hopland for some more wine tasting. Another fourth-generation run vineyard and winery is Brutocao Cellars. “Our long history of grape growing and winemaking goes back 75 years

when my grandfather, Irv Bliss, first bought the property that is now fondly called the Bliss Ranch. Every bottle has family involvement, from my brother Len growing the grapes, to my brother David helping to make the wine, to myself and my nephews Ryan and Kevin marketing and selling the finished product. It all starts in the vineyard, and the ground is sacred to us. This is the same land that our grandpa fell in love with; that our mom helped pick grapes on; that our dad saw the vision and potential of and expanded our business; that my brothers and I have continued that passion and that our children will after us, says Steve. Also in Hopland is the Graziano family of wines. This is another old Italian family with the fourth generation working in the company. Graziano has a very good Coro Mendocino and four separate labels for their wines. For dinner a must is The Broiler Steak House in Redwood Valley. It has been around since 1966 serving juicy steaks, seafood and other yummy dishes. This is where the locals go for a nice meal or family celebration. It’s just unpretentious and good. Another restaurant getting a lot of buzz is Patrona Restaurant and Lounge. Owned by wine chefs Bridget and Craig, the two are passionate about their community, and the menus are based on what is available from local purveyors. Their award-winning wine list is heavy on Mendocino County wines, which are all kept in a temperature-controlled wine room.

There are so many unique activities available to see and do while in the area. Head up to Willits and catch The Skunk Train. The two-hour Wolf Train Turn will take you into the Redwood-rich Noyo River Canyon where you will see the giants Redwoods from the comfort of a train. Montgomery Woods State Park is another location to see the Redwoods while enjoying a nice hike. For a more relaxing experience visit the Vichy Hot Springs and buy a day use pass which includes the use of the famous "champagne" Vichy Mineral Baths, Olympic-size swimming pool (in season), Hot Pool and private 700 acres of walking and hiking trails. Picnic tables are available throughout the grounds for guests' enjoyment. There is a waterfall onsite, and it is spectacular this year due to all the recent rain. The Testa House is pretty centrally located. If you wish to go further afield, Willits is an interesting town to visit. From there you can head west to Fort Bragg for a nice day trip to the coast. To get to Mendocino County, fly into the San Francisco International Airport. It is a two-and-a-half hour scenic drive that takes you over the Golden Gate Bridge. It is about an hour further than Napa or Sonoma but well worth the drive.

FRESH SPRING CHEESE B O A R D W I T H A S PA R K L I N G GRAPEFRUIT TONIC Recipe & Photo Courtesy of Marina Gunn @marinagunn | MarinaGunn.com
INGREDIENTS: 1 box of crackers 2 salamis of your choice (1 thin sliced and 1 thick sliced) 2 wedges of your preferred cheese (We chose a soft brie and a mild gouda, but choose any cheese you prefer.) 1 stem of grapes (about ½ cup) 1 roma tomato, halved ½ cup strawberries, halved ½ cucumber, sliced ⅓ cup raspberries ¼ cup cherry tomatoes ¼ cup almonds SPARKLING GRAPEFRUIT TONIC: Grapefruit juice Tonic Water
METHOD: • Assemble platter by first washing and slicing all fruits and vegetables. • Add crackers in a small section, then begin adding in your larger items first such as cheese and salami. • Continue by adding all elements of the cheese board onto the platter. We used an elongated wooden board to serve. Begin with small quantities on the board and refresh during the event so all produce and salami are fresh for your guests. • For the sparkling grapefruit tonic, fill a glass with ice. Pour 1 part juice to 2 parts tonic water. Stir and serve. • Serve your fresh spring cheese board with a refreshing grapefruit tonic and enjoy!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS MARITIME GIG FESTIVAL APPROACHING
BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTO BY JULIE REED
O
ne of Gig Harbor’s favorite yearly traditions is right around the corner. The annual Maritime Gig Festival will take place June 1 and 2, and you’ll find plenty of fun for the whole family to enjoy. Kiwanis members will kick off the event with a pancake breakfast beginning at 8am with fresh flapjacks served until 10am. You’ll find them out in front of 7 Seas Brewing. The U.S. Bank Kids Dash and Family Fun Run also take place early Saturday morning. The shorter distance kids dash begins at 8:30, and those choosing to run the 5k will start at 8:45. The course loops around Gig Harbor as you’re cheered on by friends and neighbors setting up for the big parade. The Yo’ Ho’ Harbor Grande Parade really cranks up the excitement as around 100 floats and organizations make their way through a crowd of thousands. The route meanders down Harborview Drive eventually ending on Judson Street.

pray for a safe and bountiful catch
When the clock strikes noon, food, music and business booths all open up. Here you can grab food and drink, listen to a wide range of musicians rotating about every hour, and connect with local businesses and organizations. There is also a special section of the fair designated for children. Be sure to come back on Sunday for the Wheels on the Water car show. You’ll find all makes, models and generations lined up on Harborview from Rosedale to Pioneer. Trophies are handed out in several categories like make, decade, pre-war and people’s choice. Another can’t-miss event is the Blessing of the Fleet. The Saint Nicholas Catholic Church Knights of Columbus and parish priest process from the church to Skansie Park with the “Our Lady of the Harbor” icon, and a service is held to honor those lost at sea and to pray for a safe and bountiful catch. The priest then circles the fishing fleet, blessing each boat and crew with holy water. For a detailed schedule of events, check out the festival Facebook page or GigHarborChamber.net.
