PUBLISHER Share Your Gratitude Thankfulness. It means many different things to many people. Ask a child what he or she is thankful for and you will get a variety of answers: their parents, a puppy or a new toy. For adults the answers can be just as varied. For many we are grateful to have a steady job, a home and food on the table. But there are many who struggle each and every day, not knowing where their next meal will come from or where they will lay their head down each night for some much needed rest. While we are blessed to live in a beautiful community, there are things about our town that are not visible to everyone. There are children who go to school each day hungry. Families who have faced unemployment, poverty and homelessness. This is the reality. It is easy to get engrossed in all of the holiday planning that we often forget to stop and be truly aware of those less fortunate. The good news is there are many ways in which each of us can help. Next time you are at the store, put a few extra items in your grocery cart and swing by the food bank on your way home. If you see one of the Salvation Army Red Kettles, stop and drop a few dollars into it. Better yet, if you have a child with you let him or her make the donation; it is never too early to teach the act of giving. Whatever you choose to do, I guarantee one thing – your act of kindness will leave you feeling more fulfilled. We at Living Local would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and extend a heartfelt “Thank You” for letting us be a part of this very special community.
“WHERE FAMI LY IS ALWAYS FIRST. ” “We are committed to providing professional, compassionate assistance in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring a life of dignity and independence for seniors in our community.”

Loving Communications CHOOSING TO HAVE AN OPEN HEART
BY JOY PETERSON, M.A. LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST. AUTHOR OF “22 MYTHS OF DIVORCE” AND DISCOVERING A DYNAMIC MARRIAGE DISCOVERINGDYNAMICMARRIAGE.COM
16
Lifelong bonds develop between flawed and wounded human beings in imperfect relationships. It is a given. The Open vs. Closed Heart is a principle for handling emotional states and disagreement without conflict. The diagram helps you identify specific emotional states and behavior associated with each stance. I’m sure you will recognize your typical response to stress in the Closed Heart list. There are common misconceptions about lasting intimate relationships, and some prevalent ideas may inadvertently cause abuses. Popular thinking is that when you love someone you “give your heart” to the beloved. That is a precarious thing to do. Who wants the responsibility? A healthier perspective is to invite someone you love into your heart, but the welfare of your heart is always your own responsibility. No one is so together that they are always in a place to be trusted with another’s heart. When a partner is clearly not in a good place – triggered, hostile, out-of-sorts, overwhelmed, contentious, exhausted – you don’t put your heart out there to be a target. Closing your heart to a beloved who is currently closed is not the best solution. Recognizing the signs that your partner is not available need not put you in a Closed Heart place. On the contrary, allowing your partner to be emotionally out-of-commission for a time, without blame or judgment, is an Open Heart stance.
LIVINGLOCAL
Blame and judgment are a result of putting your heart out there knowing your spouse is emotionally unavailable, and then blaming them for mistreating it. It is setting them up to fail and prove that they can’t be trusted. That is convoluted logic; it is choosing to be right rather than related. Everyone is guilty of it at some point. Another misuse of this principle is to use it to manipulate. Accusing your partner of having a Closed Heart is an abuse of the intention and spirit of the principles. It should never be used as a club. It is okay to inquire, but if you are wondering, it’s usually safe to assume that your partner is closed, and postpone any important matters until they are emotionally available again. In order to stay in an Open Heart place in the face of conflict and rough patches, you must consciously choose to take responsibility for your heart and protect it when necessary. It is a relief to know your partner will do the same thing when you go off the rails. Everybody gets to be less than perfect and still loved… everybody wins!

The Gifts of Gratitude ENHANCE RELATIONSHIPS AND INCREASE ENJOYMENT IN LIFE
The first Thanksgiving feast in 1621 was a weeklong celebration between the English Colonists and the First Nations People known as the Wampanoag. The Colonists lost many to starvation and disease during the previous winter, so a gathering with the people who taught them how to grow and harvest the food they expected to sustain them through the coming winter was very welcome. Records of that first Thanksgiving feast are sparse, but one thing we know for sure, the early colonists’ gratitude for their harvest and the people who mentored them was deep and sincere. Fast-forward nearly 400 years and, whether you’re part of a small gathering or a large feast, Thanksgiving offers a national invitation to reflect on and give thanks for all that’s occurred during the previous year. The challenge is to give this day more than a perfunctory “thanks” and to feel and express your gratitude. You may be one of the people giving thanks for a matter of life and death as were the early colonists, but chances of that are rather low. It’s more likely that Thanksgiving will include casual conversation and a football game or other group activity.
BY DEBORAH OLIVE, LIFE COACH
Appreciation When business owners and managers truly appreciate their employees, it translates into greater customer care, increased creativity, employee alignment and more.
Studies in positive psychology and neuroscience over the last decade show the benefits of gratitude are far broader than previously recognized. In the realm of business, gratitude reduces stress and produces more experiences “in the zone” – where

creativity is not only enhanced, but also sustained for hours at a time. When business owners and managers truly appreciate their employees, it translates into greater customer care, increased creativity, employee alignment and more. At home, appreciation enhances relationships, health and enjoyment of the present moment. In addition to these very practical benefits, gratitude delivers physiological benefits to the brain including: increased oxygen absorption and more efficient interaction for greater harmony and a sense of peace and well being. Gratitude triggers endocrine reactions that release the “happy” neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin). In short, we’re happier when we’re grateful. Studies at Harvard and the University of Chicago reveal that most people believe they’ll be happy when they are successful. It may be counterintuitive, but data shows that happy people are 31 percent more likely to be successful. In short, gratitude increases performance and enjoyment in both our personal and professional lives. Nevertheless, we’re not wired for gratitude. We’re wired for worry, doubt and fear. We’re wired for the status quo and to protect. We’re wired for survival. This means gratitude is a learned behavior and the benefits of gratitude increase with practice. If you already have a gratitude practice, you know its value.

If you’re looking to deliberately cultivate gratitude, or to increase its benefits in your life, here are a few suggestions: • Identify three or more things each day for which you’re grateful. • Look for opportunities to personally thank people. • Eliminate the 3 C’s: criticizing, condemning and complaining.

• Keep a gratitude journal. Like any new practice, you’re more likely to sustain a gratitude practice over time when you have 1) a clear intention; 2) a structure for support and 3) others that are also practicing gratitude. I created a FaceBook Group called the Appreciation Station, a platform for a 30-Day Appreciation Challenge, and a growing community to provide support and encouragement. I post inspiration, ways to keep your practices fresh, facts about the science behind gratitude and practical applications. The Appreciation Station makes it easy to cultivate gratitude and to experience increased energy, optimism and success. A Home for Life AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST CAN HELP YOU LIFE SAFELY AND COMFORTABLY BY SARAH FRIESEN, GIG HARBOR HOME MANAGEMENT
Aging-in-place means remaining in one’s home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level. It means the pleasure of living in a familiar environment throughout one’s maturing years, without changing health conditions requiring a move to a new home. There are three main categories of Aging-inPlace: • Without urgent needs: This group includes individuals who want to age in place and, although they are not experiencing immediate or significant health issues, they have a preference for universal design. • Progressive, condition based needs: This group is made up of those with chronic or progressive conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, cataracts, macular degeneration or hearing loss that will require special modifications for aging in place. These individuals are usually aware of their needs but meeting them isn’t necessarily urgent.

“Through the training program, I was taught specific strategies and techniques for designing and building esthetically enriching, barrier-free living environment,” said Margit Glenn, co-owner Visionarch, LLC in Port Orchard. “Barrier-free homes have features such as plentiful lighting, thresholds that are flush with the floor, no-step entries, wide doorways and hallways and floors and bathtubs with non-slip surfaces.” CAPS Professionals like Margit can partner with a Senior Move Manager to ensure that every aspect of a home has been organized to suit your needs. Trained through the National Association of Senior Move Managers, AtHome Specialists can assist with: • re-purposing existing spaces • clearing clutter • increasing safety in main walkways • simplifying kitchen cabinets • organizing closets • donating or selling items no longer needed
• Traumatic change needs: This group includes those who experienced an abrupt or traumatic change such as a stroke, a fall resulting in a broken bone or recovery from surgery that necessitates modifications to allow them to stay in their home.
Senior Move Managers apply the same coordinated, compassionate organizing techniques to help you stay in your home as they do to help you move. They can also recommend local experts when further assistance is needed from occupational therapists or caregivers.
Certified Aging-In-Place Specialists (CAPS) are remodelers, general contractors, designers, architects and health care consultants who have received formal training through the National Association of Home Builders.

Prepare Far Ahead For Long-Term Care Costs
Make Your Financial Future a Priority.
THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, ERIN ABRIGO
November is Long-Term Care Awareness Month – a month dedicated to educating the public about the need to prepare for the potentially devastating costs of long-term care. And the more you know about these expenses, the better prepared you will be to deal with them. To begin with, just how expensive is longterm care? Consider this: The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $87,000 per year, according to the 2014 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a financial-services company. And the average cost of an assisted living facility, which provides a level of care that is not as extensive as that offered by a nursing home, is $42,000 per year, according to the same Genworth study. All long-term care costs have risen steadily over the past several years, with no indication that they will level off. Many people, when they think about longterm care at all, believe that Medicare will pay these costs — but that’s just not the case. Typically, Medicare only covers a small percentage of long-term care expenses, which means you will have to take responsibility. Of course, if you are fortunate, you may go through life without ever needing to enter a nursing home or an assisted living facility, or even needing help from a home healthcare aide. But given the costs involved, can you afford to jeopardize your financial independence — or, even worse, impose a potential burden on your grown children?
long-term care, you could simply use the bulk of the money for your normal living expenses during retirement and earmark the remainder for your estate. However, if did need many years of nursing home care, you could end up going through all your money. As an alternative, you could transfer the risk of paying for long-term care to an insurance company. Many plans are available these days, so, to find the choice that is appropriate for your needs, you will want to consult with a professional financial advisor. Here’s a word of caution, though: The premiums for this type of protection rise pretty rapidly as you get older, so, if you are considering adding this coverage, you may be better off by acting sooner, rather than later. None of us can know with certainty what the future holds for us. Ideally, you will always remain in good shape, both mentally and physically, with the ability to take care of yourself. But, as you’ve heard, it’s best to “hope for the best, but plan for the worst.” So, take the lessons of Long-Term Care Awareness Month to heart and start preparing yourself for every scenario. Hemp as Building Material FROM SPROUTING TO DOUBTING BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS
(This is part one of two-part series) Hemp produces 250 times more fiber than cotton, suppresses weeds, requires no pesticides and enriches soil with nitrogen. Hemp for a whole house can be grown on just a few acres of land in just a few months. This quick turnaround makes it a very affordable sustainable material if grown and used locally. Let’s clear up any confusion – this highly renewable resource, hemp, is not marijuana or pot. You cannot get high using hemp products. Leafscience.com explains how hemp is different than marijuana. These two varieties of cannabis are grown for two different uses and therefore require different growing conditions due to their genetic parentage and cultivation. Centuries of selective hemp breeding have resulted in optimized plants that grow fast and have higher stalk harvests. These tall and hardy plants were grown by early civilizations for food, oil and textiles. They are sturdy and typically grown outside to maximize its yield. Despite the fact that hemp should not be classified as a drug, it is still currently illegal to grow in the United States. Recently I-502

decriminalized cultivating and distributing industrial hemp in Washington State, yet the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulates hemp production, and it is illegal to grow hemp under federal law without a DEA permit. However, in February of this year, the Washington State Senate approved a bill that would nullify the federal prohibition once put into effect. Hemp is currently available by import only. In fact the U.S. is the number one importer of hemp, supplied mostly by China and Canada. Yet this was not always the case. Did you know that Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were hemp boosters? Hemp may be the longest used fiber in history. For over ten thousand years, humans have cultivated and woven using hemp fiber. In the 16th century, Britain constructed everything from battleships to rigging and sails from hemp fiber and oil, also creating maps and logs from hemp paper. Hemp.com reminds us that in the 17th century, American “farmers in Virginia, Massachusetts and Connecticut were ordered by law to grow Indian hemp. By the early 18th century, a person could be sentenced to jail if they weren’t growing hemp on their land!”
WWW.GOGIGHARBOR.COM NOVEMBER 2015
And by 1850, the U.S. contained approximately 8,400 hemp plantations totaling a minimum of 16.8 million acres. In 1938, Hemp was declared to be the “New Billion-Dollar Crop” by Popular Mechanics Magazine due to its strength and durability.
Purposeful Imagine your cell phones, electric vehicles and homes with energy packs that charge within seconds... Unfortunately by the end of the 1930s, a smear campaign promoting reefer madness hysteria led to Marijuana Prohibition. It’s been said that very few people at the time realized that marijuana and hemp came from the same plant species. Therefore when Marijuana Prohibition took effect, many were surprised to see it destroy the hemp industry. Nowadays, according to the website Engadget, “hemp may be the ticket to our energy future.” By heating hemp cast fibers in a two-stage process you can make extremely efficient carbon electrodes. Hence healthier cheaper batteries made from biological leftovers. They are said to be much more tolerant of temperature extremes and will charge up almost instantly and don’t degrade. Imagine your cell phones, electric vehicles and homes with energy packs that charge within seconds and are made from healthy sustainable materials! Hemp is the next generation of furniture, plant-based plastics, mainstream fabrics and building materials; it is natural, breathable and chemical-free. When we employ technological advances with sustainable and renewable resources, our built environment will truly be comfortable, healthy and efficient. (Part two of Hemp as Building Material will look at what products are currently available.)

Youth Empowered COMMUNITY IN SCHOOLS OF THE PENINSULA MAKING A DIFFERENCE ONE CHILD AT A TIME
BY SARAH POLYAKOV PHOTOS BY JULIE REED
24
There are children who look like all the others on the outside — youthful, full of promise, the very future of our society. But there is often an unseen side of those same children; a struggle on the inside. These young people are often the silent minority until someone recognizes them and steps in to lend a hand. Whether the help provided is in terms of schoolwork or ending food insecurity in a child’s life, Community In Schools of Peninsula (CISP) has an answer. Started 37 years ago by Bill Milliken as a New York Street academy, the program directly addressed children who, due to a variety of reasons, were not attending school during the day. Since then, the program has grown to include Communities In Schools (CIS) affiliates in 25 states as well as the District of Columbia.
LIVINGLOCAL
CISP proactively identifies children who need a helping hand. Once a young person is identified and enrolled in their program, a new world of success opens to that child, both academically and through programs that assist with whole-child services like social and emotional supports, school supplies, food, dental assistance, bully prevention, sports scholarships and more. In fact, about 80 percent of the students who participate in their programs qualify for free or reduced lunch. Colleen Speer, the executive director of CISP, notes, “The students we serve in Peninsula School District are typically in the bottom 10 percent of their class. These students have fallen through the cracks. While some students need the extra practice with individualized attention, others need the company of a caring adult. Studies have shown that

students learn better when they feel as though they are in a safe environment.” Run primarily by a large force of volunteers, CISP offers programs that run the gamut and address a variety of needs. Laurel Shultz, program director notes, “CISP offers training in both literacy and math subject areas. Every volunteer works in a group among other mentors and mentees, and for every program there is a CISP staff person available to provide help. CISP works with the Peninsula School District to ensure that all volunteers are safe to work with the young people we serve, and every prospective volunteer receives an orientation on what the mentorship entails.” But one of the most important overarching goals of CISP is to curtail the school dropout rate. CISP recognizes children and youth who are at risk and surrounds them with a variety of programs that are meant to serve as a foundation conducive to learning. CISP uses holistic methods to address the needs of each child. “CISP site coordinators work closely with kids, youth, teachers, counselors, parents and outside community partners to ensure that students receive the support they need. Our programs start at first grade, and there are CISP programs at the middle and high school level too. Dropping out of school is not just a sudden event but usually is the result of a long
period of disengagement with school. Our services are meant to support students along their academic journey, so they never feel like they aren’t capable of success,” notes Shultz. Most of all, those who work and volunteer with CISP recognize that each child is an individual with a unique set of needs, and those needs are met with enthusiasm. Speer continues, “Because the mission of CISP is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life, we get excited about helping one child at a time. The CIS model is affordable, adaptable to local needs, proven effective according to an independent five-year study, and offers a strong return on investment.”
Volunteerism
Studies have shown that students learn better when they feel as though they are in a safe environment.
Communities In Schools helps families navigate the system for help, even practical matters. For example, Backpacks for Kids helps to provide snacks for CISP to ensure children have food when they get home. Backpacks for Kids also helps with childhood hunger by providing hot lunches throughout the Key Peninsula. CISP is always looking for new volunteers, who may start with the program any time of year. To find out more about how you can help make a difference, please visit their website at: www.peninsula.ciswa.org.

ALL THE COMFORTS OF HOME Local company provides unique vacation experience By Patty Hutchens When Krista Philbrick started her vacation rental and property management business five years ago, she could not have foreseen the success she would experience. A boutique vacation rental management business, Harbor Home Vacation Rentals is the perfect solution to not only those seeking to rent, but also those who want to rent out their own property. “We started renting out our personal residence in 2010 after a tough fishing season,” shared Krista, whose husband Ryan is a commercial fisherman in Alaska during the summer months. “We would move out on a Friday with our then 2-year-old twins and stay in a trailer while guests stayed in our home. It helped our business kick-start so much that we were then able to buy more homes to turn into vacation rentals.” Because the couple owns vacation rentals and also utilizes vacation rentals when traveling, they have a unique understanding of the expectations of both the owner and the guest. Krista and Ryan agree that there has been a significant advantage, both emotionally and financially, in renting to short-term guests as opposed to long-term renters. While the financial return is greater with short-term, they say the fact their properties are cleaned and
28
checked on every couple days is also a distinct advantage. “Homeowners can also continue to use and even improve their property while it isn’t being rented,” said Krista of the benefit of vacation rentals. Recognizing that owning a business such as Harbor Home Vacation Rentals means it is not a 9 to 5 job, Krista said the fact they utilize a hands-on approach is what helps make them successful. It’s hard work, but a lot of fun too. They are innovative and work closely with the homeowners to provide customized management that best fits each homeowner’s needs. “Every detail is personally handled, and we care for the home as if it were our own,” said Krista. With both homes and condominiums available throughout the South Puget Sound, Harbor Home Rentals has something for everyone. In addition to Krista and Ryan, Harbor Home Vacation Rentals also has manager Ariel Gustanski on staff. Each of them works as a team to ensure the best experience for both owners and guests. Collectively, they often personally clean homes when needed and do necessary maintenance themselves when something goes awry during someone’s stay.

The company believes in giving back to the community that has supported them. Krista is involved at her church as well as at their children’s school and donates to the FISH Food Bank. Ariel too is integrated into the community through her involvement with the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation Happy to be a business owner in the area where she grew up, Krista said it is a great place to raise her young family. “This is such a community minded and beautiful area,” said Krista. And it is that experience she hopes to bring to guests who visit the area and choose Harbor Home Vacation Rentals.

A Desire to Serve Local Lions Club ensures every child gets a toy this Christmas By Kellie French Photos by Diana Fetzner
“We Serve” is the motto of the Gig Harbor Lions Club. This is the motto that 1.5 million Lions Club members strive to live by. These two words are the marching orders and the inspiration that motivates the Lions Club to make sure that every child has a Christmas present this year in Gig Harbor. It was at a Lions Club meeting that Robert Moore stood up to volunteer to oversee the project that would ultimately tie the participating merchants together and get the presents to the Cheney Family Boys and Girls and Club and the Tom Taylor YMCA to distribute. This project is called the Gig Harbor Christmas Giving Trees. It is sponsored by the Lions Club, and this is the second year the Lions have sponsored the program. The mission is that no child in the Harbor should ever be without a present. The community response from merchants and individuals is overwhelming and is a great reminder just how our tight knit community of Gig Harbor pulls together to ensure that the needs of the community are met. To initiate this project, Moore and other Lions

Club members began to get the word out to the community by contacting such groups as the Gig Harbor Waterfront Alliance and the Uptown Merchants Association. The Downtown Waterfront Alliance holds such events as Girls Night Out, which helps to get the word out more about the Gig Harbor Christmas Giving Trees. The entire list of merchants will be finalized at the end of October. Presentations were made by the Gig Harbor Lions Club to the Uptown Merchants Association. These two organizations were chosen because they encompass most of the merchants in the Gig Harbor Area. This is truly a Gig Harbor effort. The generosity truly shows with the willing participation of the merchants and getting the word out to the community. Volunteers from the Lions Club choose different types of gifts that will benefit students up to 15 years of age. Gift choices are determined by coming up with gifts that are based on gender and age. Some of the most popular items chosen are Legos (always a favorite with a wide range of age and gender), transformers, jewelry boxes, sweaters, warm clothes, wooden toys, train sets, teddy bears and fire trucks — all kinds of toys that brighten up a child’s

eyes. Lions Club volunteers coordinate with each other and choose a wide variety of gifts to make sure that all youth of Gig Harbor are covered. The gifts are written on a ticket and placed under one of the Giving Trees located at one of the participating merchants. Residents may take a ticket from under any one of the Giving Trees located inside the merchants around Gig Harbor, or they have the option to bring a present of their own choosing. The possibilities are endless! Next comes the distribution portion of the presents. The Lions Club volunteers collect all of the toys from the participating merchants around Gig Harbor. The presents are then dropped off at the Cheney Family Boy and Girls Club and the Tom Taylor YMCA. Mallory Carmichael is the Program Coordinator at the Cheney Boys and Girls Club. This is Carmichael’s first year overseeing the project and she cites the program as extremely successful in the past. She is very excited for the participation of the community and the partnership of the local Gig Harbor Lions Club and the Tom Taylor YMCA. Families and children at the Cheney

Boys and Girls Club and the Tom Taylor YMCA may sign up for a toy for each child. The toys are then distributed the week before Christmas. In some cases there are some families who may not feel comfortable signing up for a present, but the staff has ways of identifying need and can discreetly make sure each child receives a present. It is a straightforward, organized process with a great goal; to make sure that each child receives a present. This is a wonderful example of the initiative the community of Gig Harbor takes to serve and fill a need. Everyone is working together. We have less than four weeks before Thanksgiving; a national holiday that we have set aside to give thanks for the blessings and abundance we have as a nation and as a community. IN FOCUS THE BEST KEPT SECRET
KGHP-FM provides educational opportunities and local entertainment in one By Kellie French Photos by Diane Fetzner If you ever want to hear the latest community news or a great selection of music, tune into the Key Peninsula Gig Harbor Student Run radio station. The frequencies are KGHP-FM 89.3, 89.9 and 105.7. KGHP-FM is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) local community radio station established in 1988 to support and serve the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula Community. KGHP-FM is the only local radio station on the Key Peninsula. When KGHP-FM first started, it was one of three high school radio stations in the state of Washington. It was started by Don Hoffman a former KNBQ-FM general manager; Max Bice, a former KSTW-TV technician was the engineer; Milt Boyd, a drama and band coach; and Keith Styles who was in army communications. They were a group of friends who raised approximately $50,000 to $60,000 to begin the radio station. Those were the early beginnings of Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula’s best kept secret. Spencer Abersold has vision to raise community and sponsor awareness as well as illustrate the educational advantages for the high school students who give back to the community and enrich lives. Abersold started out as a volunteer at the radio station and became the station manager in 2005. He and others participated in the Guinness World Record of Radio Broadcasting to raise money for the station. According to the NW Military Online, “Spencer Abersold, aka ‘The Walrus,’ sat before the KGHP radio station console for 200 hours; nine days – attempting to beat the Guinness Book of World Record’s previous continuous broadcasting record of 187 hours. ‘I didn’t lose my voice, Abersold said, ‘but I did go crazy.’ Recently, Abersold also walked 32 miles across KGHP-FM’s transformers to raise awareness and funds for the station.
ABOVE The radio station, located at Peninsula High School, provides students hands-on experience. TOP RIGHT In addition to high school sporting events, the station also covers many popular events in the Gig Harbor community.
NW Military Online also reports that Abersold raised $16,000 for the radio station, which is inside Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor. KGHP’s funds were at risk after being supported by the school district for 23 years. Abersold commented, “after the buzz got going and people realized their radio station was at stake, the community got together and made sure it persevered.” When you walk into the radio station at Key Peninsula, you will see fairly new equipment. As recently as four years ago, the project to replace outdated equipment began. Some of the equipment that was replaced was 30 to 40 years old. The studio was revamped with new transmitters and in-studio devices—which lead to a cutting edge environment to teach students the broadcasting arts. The new state-of-the-art equipment should last for a good two to three decades. For a measure of humor, there is a quote painted on the wall, “The Radio Craze will end. Thomas Edison 1922.”

KGHP-FM is used as an educational resource. KGHP-FM offers Peninsula School District students hands-on experience in a classroom environment with a fully operational radio station to enhance their skills for great job opportunities within the broadcasting arts. Abersold pointed out that having the opportunity for students to gain experience in the broadcasting arts opens the doors for future job opportunities. Some of these opportunities include radio broadcasting, hosting radio shows, television broadcasting, being a DJ, or a content writer for shows and commercials. Students could also pursue careers in editing movies and producing short films. KGHP-FM also serves as a primary source of local emergency radio broadcast information. KGHP-FM is a member of the Pierce County Emergency Disaster Committee and Response Team. Weather alerts include but are not limited to severe weather broadcasts, emergency disaster information, power outage updates, school closures and hot and cold weather shelter information. Of course we cannot forget the most important part of KGHP: entertainment! KGHP-FM currently covers Peninsula high school football games, Gig Harbor high school football games, Peninsula basketball games, the Maritime Parade, Christmas tree lighting, Run for a Soldier, National Night Out, election night coverage, Blessing of the Fleet, the Annual Dog Walk, and the Chum Festival and Kayak Race.
KGHP-FM is also on the Internet, and there are listeners from countries around the globe. The station also has some volunteers. The Gig Harbor Chief of Police, Kelly Busey, broadcasts the basketball games. Dave Allen, who was a DJ in the 60s and is a retired respiratory therapist, hosts a show called, “Mostly Jazz” which runs Tuesdays and Sundays from 5 to 7pm. “Mostly Jazz” ranges from ragtime to fusion and from trios to big bands. Also in the mix is a shot of the blues and a few surprises. Another show on the station is “B.D.’s Books and Friends,” which runs Thursdays from 5 to 7pm. As a child, B.D. had trouble reading, which was attributed to mild dyslexia. Once she found a way to make the letters and words work, her entire world was available to her. Now, she loves to share her joy of reading and writing on the station. D.J. Dale runs the “Classic Rock and Roll Connections” on Mondays from 5 to 7pm. Dale’s show debuted in August of 2002 on KGHP Gig Harbor. Each Monday, D.J. picks a theme and plays rock n’ roll hits from the 50s, 60s 70s, and 80s connected to it. K & A’s Harbor chat runs Wednesday evenings from 5 to 7pm. The show informs listeners of community events, nonprofit organizations, and happenings throughout the Key Peninsula/ Gig Harbor region. Co-hosts, Alastair Fordyce and Kyle Lytle, are brother and sister, so it makes for a great duo packed with energy. Mike Kelly also runs the smooth sounds of
the Jamaican underground, with Reggae, Ska, and Dub Wed from 7:30 to10:30pm. David Lee also runs “Music with a Lighter Touch” Sundays from 7 to 10 pm and Thursday 9pm to Midnight. Some of the sponsors that help to make it all possible at KGHP include 4WD Toyota Owner Magazine, 7 Seas Brewing Co, City of Gig Harbor, Century Tel Experience Center, Gig Harbor Law, Holmes Chiropractic, Key Peninsula Civic Center, Key Pen Parks, Peninsula Light Company, PenMet Parks, Send Out Cards, The Tides Tavern, Uptown Gig Harbor, and Williams Kastner. Be sure to check out these great businesses and sponsors that are helping to make the KGHP-FM possible. Also, if listeners would like to sponsor the radio station annually, there are four different packages that run from $600 to $3,000 per year. Each level offers different promotional packages depending on the level of sponsorship, including air time, interviews and company logos on the website. Sit back, relax, and check out some of the broadcasts, music and shows and let’s continue to build on the vision of the radio station, and promote the value of Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula’s best kept secret.

AN ITALIAN ADVENTURE Local gondolier provides customized adventure By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Ivan Postivka Photography Perhaps you have seen it in the harbor – visions of Venice, Italy as a gondola glides through the water. John Synco took off on his first Venetian gondola cruise in Gig Harbor on September 18 of this year, but he is no stranger to providing people with the true Italian experience. Since first becoming a gondolier in 2002, Synco has worked in Long Beach, California and lived in Edmonds before moving to Gig Harbor in May. His business, Gig Harbor Gondola, is the only Venetian gondola operation in the Pacific Northwest. Synco provides his passengers with a 60 or 90-minute motor free cruise complete with appetizers prepared by The Harbor General Store. “Guests are free to bring their own beverage and any additional food they desire,” said Synco. “I have cozy blankets on board, and I can accommodate any beverage by opening and offering cups or glasses if needed.” Gig Harbor Gondola provides the perfect venue for a romantic date, a special event, photo shoots, video shoots and more. Synco also is available for private parties and pick-ups and drop-offs for those who live on the water. As your gondolier, Synco said he welcomes
most out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to providing a customized experience for his guests. Whether it is a night that takes them out for a beer at a local bar or dinner at a waterside restaurant, Synco makes an enjoyable experience for all.
& Boatyard, helped him find a home for his gondola, which was named Nelly by the original gondolier in Venice, a name given in honor of the gondolier’s mother. Synco is also grateful to The Harbor General Store for making the appetizers he provides to his passengers.
“Life slows down and pure relaxation takes over when you take a seat on an authentic Venetian gondola,” shared Synco. “The guests’ only job is to sit back, enjoy their company and the beautiful scenery. Being propelled by oar means each ride is peaceful, allowing you to hear the beauty of the harbor.”
Although only in the community six months, Synco said he is looking forward to becoming more involved in giving back to his new home town.
When asked what he attributes to the success of his business, Synco said there are many who have supported and encouraged him along the way, including his wife, Tricia, his parents and sister. “It took the big, brown eyes of my daughter Olive to make me push past all the challenges. It took all the people that believed in my dream and who donated, and it took Tim ‘Bepi Venexiano’ Reinard to give me the opportunity to buy an authentic gondola without having to make the journey to Venice,” said Synco. And there are those in his new home of Gig Harbor who have supported his new venture as well. Ron Roark, owner of Gig Harbor Marina

In the meantime, plan to take a trip to Venice without leaving the confines of Gig Harbor. And don’t think the winter months will slow down Gig Harbor Gondola. Synco plans to run Gig Harbor Gondola year round. “I’m planning to light Nelly up for December and cruise the harbor late into the evening,” he said. “Dress for the cold, bring something hot to drink and come check out all the beautiful lights with me.”

Adrenaline, power and excitement. These are just some of the things that Gig Harbor High School senior Seely Hartman enjoys about the sport of volleyball. “The moment my teammate or I smash the ball on the floor is what lights the team up. Even if it’s not an outstanding hit, it’s a point earned that gives us the thrill in the middle of a tight game,” said Seely. “I love being a part of a team because sharing this experience with girls that I love is the best.” Seely has played volleyball for GHHS for four years. She also played basketball and ran track and field in her junior year. “I’m also debating playing on the golf team with my little sister, freshman Heather Hartman,” said Seely, who has played South Sound club volleyball all through high school, all while carrying a 3.6 GPA.

In addition, I have been team captain of sports teams three different years, so I have a sense of leadership that I think would tie in well with being a personal trainer or a coach. I love the idea of helping others reach their best self!”

SHOP SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY! Support Local Economic Growth By Mark Preising. Photos by Diane Fetzner
Saturday, November 28, 2015 is Small Business Saturday®. It is an important opportunity to support local businesses with patronage. By supporting local business on this date, we demonstrate as consumers how important local businesses are to our community, and we support the growth of job development within the community. American Express helped launch Small Business Saturdays on November 27, 2010. The U.S. Small Business Association also provides advertising and marketing support for the event. The idea was originated to offset the massive spending by consumers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday at big box retailers and online outlets. In 2011, the date was officially designated with huge support from Washington D.C. to Washington State, including the governors, mayors, congress and the President. Local consumers across the nation supported their neighborhood businesses in 2014 by spending an estimated $14.3 billion at small businesses. When one chooses to shop in his or her locally owned stores, they are not only saving themselves time by not travelling to other destinations, but they likely are also saving money. Traveling out of town for one’s shopping needs requires the cost of gas, time away from home or work and, depending upon where you go, could also mean a higher sales tax. If you are an Internet shopper, you may save time, but not always money. After all, those shipping costs can quickly add up. Why not make a conscious effort to do as much local shopping as possible? The benefits to you and your community are many. Small business owners are known for their

contributions to the many nonprofit agencies that in turn help our friends, neighbors and colleagues. In fact, statistics show those locally owned and operated stores are two and half times more likely to donate to nonprofit agencies than the large chain stores. Small business owners are the ones who take the money they earn and reinvest it into their community with their own purchases of goods and services. Can the same be said for the “big box” stores? By shopping at locally owned stores you are not only helping to stimulate the local economy, but you may likely be helping other people in the community who rely upon several of our nonprofits during the down times in their lives.
Mary Des Marais, executive director of the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance, states that one of their best events for motivating visitors has been the addition of Girls Night Out. In 2014, 1,000 ladies turned out for the event and spent over $70,000. She says they expect 1,500 participants this year on November 12. During this year’s event, maps

This year many events and opportunities planned throughout the Northwest, including right here in Gig Harbor, to help promote shopping locally. In our community, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance will help drive consumers to downtown Gig Harbor’s waterfront with a variety of activities. The Alliance and city have been advertising “Waterfront Walking Tours” to help build foot traffic and patronage to the area. The American Express’ website provides an excellent video explaining the concept and overall meaning of Small Business Saturdays. They also have a launch and information website: www.americanexpress.com/us/smallbusiness/shop-small/. In 2014, American Express stated that 88 million people shopped small on Small Business Saturday®. They are encouraging local small businesses across the country to participate, expecting an even greater turnout this year. American Express provides free marketing collateral and materials from their website at (americanexpress.com and follow the link under “business” to “merchants”) including: printable signs, “Save the Date” cards, e-mail templates and social posts, Shop Small logos, Shop Small Merchandise, (including tote bags, buttons, balloons, a poster and a pennant), while supplies last, and Event Guides. Small businesses can also sign up to receive free ads throughout the year and be posted on the “Shop Small Map” hosted through the website. The ads and a listing on ShopSmall.com are free for participating small businesses. ShopSmall.com also provides ideas for the event in their “Small Business Event Kit” online. So, let’s all get together this holiday season and support our local businesses who help keep our communities vibrant with growth and economic opportunities. As Mary Des Marais mentioned, it is a great way to preserve the traditional holiday seasons we all remembered growing up, for our children and our families.

T
he National Hunger and Homeless Awareness week is November 14 through November 22. It comes just one week before Thanksgiving and serves as a reminder of those that are less fortunate. For many of us, the holiday season spurs reflection and gratitude for blessings and calls many to consider the opportunity to serve the less fortunate. Sometimes, it’s the seemingly insignificant daily details that function as the grandest of gifts – good health, shelter, ample food and warm clothing. For many, the holidays can represent a time of anxiety and loneliness. There are so many in our country that are lacking the most basic provisions for material and emotional support. The effort to alleviate the dilemma of hunger and homelessness in the Pacific Northwest spans from the goliath of big business to most humble of church missions. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Union Gospel Mission
are innovative organizations strategically seeking opportunity to curb the crisis of homelessness in the Pacific Northwest. American generosity is unparalleled during the holiday season. We unavoidably see the faces of poverty, hunger and homelessness in almost every community. It is nearly impossible to drive down the streets of any community without seeing the face of poverty and destitution. We are left with questions of whether our finances actually reach the intended recipients for the desired purpose. It’s overwhelming to know where to begin or how to appropriately assist when the need is so vast. Providing quantifiable data on homelessness poses a perpetual challenge. To find the precise headcount is a near impossibility due to a continuous roving population, an inability to locate every person, and inconsistent definitions among organizations. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Development (HUD) classifies homelessness as those living in places not established for human habitation or those using emergency shelter or transitional housing. Often times, it can be families fleeing from domestic abuse situations, tenants that have been evicted without the means to acquire further housing, or those discharged from state facilities that are unable to obtain further housing. Despite being home to some of the most renowned big businesses in the world, the Pacific Northwest is not immune to the crisis of homelessness. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is at the forefront in Washington State for objectively attempting to resolve some of the complexities of this crisis. HUD’s 2014 data shows that there are nearly 35,000 people living in homelessness in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. The state of Washington accounts for over 55 percent of the homelessness in the PNW and is sixth in the nation for those living in emergency or transitional housing. Approximately 20,000 people in the state of Washington are homeless on any given day and it is estimated that nearly half of Washington’s homeless population is comprised of families. The Gates Foundation reports that one in four children living in Washington is subject to a family’s struggle to afford the basic necessities. The Foundation recognizes and is making great strides in effort to address the challenges for children living in poverty. The Foundation
expresses that Washington’s children are potentially slipping through the cracks as 35 percent of those living in low income will not graduate from high school. The dilemma of poverty and homelessness is multi-faceted for which there is no straightforward solution. The Gates Foundation has formulated a strategy and reserves a deep commitment to serving Washington’s families and children. They have partnered with public, private, and nonprofit sectors to close the gap for underprivileged children. The Foundation maintains that education is the greatest tool to break the cycle of poverty. They have invested particularly in early education to prepare younger children in their formidable years for elementary school. In conjunction with supporting early learning education, the Gates Foundation advocates and supports the Road Map Project. The Foundation deems the Project to be a “community-driven effort to keep students on track.” The Road Map Project is exceedingly driven by data to set goals and requires participation from families and educational institutions. The notion is that every child will have ample opportunity for educational success. Although the Gates Foundation fully utilizes education to break the next generation’s cycle of poverty, it affirms that the current state of homelessness has to be addressed. The Foundation asserts that local charities ultimately know their communities. They have forged relationships throughout the state to address the distinctive hardships for

varying communities. The Foundation seeks homelessness prevention opportunity by supporting local charities and programs that seek to strengthen their community. Similar to the Gates Foundation, the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) seeks opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness in the Pacific Northwest. The UGM has been deeply rooted in almost every community since the Great Depression. Its onset was to serve those struggling with addiction and lack of shelter. Since pre - World War II, they have been partnering with communities to offer food, clothing, shelter and recovery support in a Christian centered environment. Last year, communities rallied in support of the UGM enabling them to provide shelter and nearly

The majority of their funds come from either the generosity of individual monetary donations or from donations to support revenue generating entrepreneurships (such as thrift stores). Less than 5 percent of the generated finances are allocated to administration so that the bulk of the donations are invested directly into the mission. There is assurance with this program that the contributions do make a considerable difference and reach the needs of the intended recipients. In addition to a recovery program, the facility offers three meals a day, counseling, medical attention, Bible study, fitness, and opportunity for vocational growth. The Center methodically targets and addresses the root of the problem and treats the entire person in effort to break the cycle. vocationally prepare residents. Residents are required to work 240 hours without pay so that they can acquire the skills that they need while building a resume.
It’s not always about monetary contributions, but sometimes it’s just giving time as a resource. The UGM Center for Women and Children encourages community support and volunteer assistance. The Center welcomes volunteers to offer a few hours of their time for service. The volunteer training is concise and offers insightful perspective on the dilemma of homelessness and the needs of the guests. Volunteer groups will frequently bring and share a prepared meal for the guests. So many of these women and children are deeply hurting and appreciate the willingness and care from community members.
As part of the career readiness process, the UGM purports that residents spend time in their educational centers where they can study for a GED, learn computer skills, draft resumes and can search for careers. The LIFE Program facilitates opportunity for residents to gradually re-enter the workforce, develop their resumes and a chance to acquire an important reference.
If anyone is familiar with the face of homelessness and poverty, it would be Spokane, Washington. UGM LIFE Recovery program in Spokane has partnered with local businesses to provide vocational training. The UGM has taken the stance that to break the cycle of homelessness, residents must be able to re-enter the workforce. Staff members at LIFE Recovery work with residents to assess their talents and to build their goals. The UGM states “The ultimate goal is not just to get a job – any job – but to engage their talents, skills and passions in meaningful work.” The LIFE Recovery program does seek the assistance of local business to aid in their effort to

Almost half of Washington’s homeless live on the streets of Seattle and King County and are struggling to make ends meet. The Seattle Union Gospel Mission has partnered with a local grocery store and has launched its Holiday Meal Campaign. The UGM asserts that they are able to feed 10 guests a traditional holiday meal for as little as $1.92 per person. To put it into perspective, they suggest that the average American traditional household will spend approximately $13 per person. There are non-perishable food drop-off facilities, and they express a need for the donation of specific rescue blankets that can be purchased from Amazon for those living in unsheltered environments. The Pacific Northwest has taken considerable strides to carve out hunger and homelessness. It’s an ongoing and complicated effort for which we are fortunate to have caring and innovative organizations seeking to break the cycle. As the holiday season draws closer and we reach the culmination of another year, consider reaching out into your local community. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Union Gospel Mission both provide a myriad of opportunities for the community to get involved. They require the support and assistance of all of those eager to assist – the smallest of effort of support can still make a huge impact. If you would like to get involved, please visit the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation at www.gatesfoundation. org/What-We-Do/US-Program/WashingtonState or the Union Gospel Mission at www.ugm.org.

HOLIDAY PARTY REMINDERS ‘Tis the season for parties and holiday celebrations of all shapes and sizes, but navigating party etiquette in these modern times can be difficult. Here are some ways to be gracious guests and considerate hosts this year. Hosts: Keep it simple. A dinner party is more fun to throw (and attend) when it’s buffet style. Plus, it will save you some time and stress. Tidy up beforehand, and make sure the bathroom is well-stocked with hand towels and toilet paper. Be the spark! It’s your job to run the show. Let your guests know when it’s time to eat or play games, and circulate among them. Be flexible. Sometimes meals will fail, or a friend will arrive with an unexpected guest. Just be gracious and plan on having a fallback food wise. Guests: A small gift, such as a bottle of wine, or a “Thank You” card, is always a welcomed gesture. Everyone appreciates a guest who chips in. Offer to help with the cooking, or making the quick trip to the store for more ice or forgotten ingredients.
F
or me, the holidays are not complete without the festive decorations of the season. And as much as I love to shop and see the stores stocked with goodies, I’ve made a habit the last few years to skip pricey ready-made décor in favor of more natural materials. This not only saves me time and money, but it allows me to refocus the holidays on what is most important to me: spending time with the people I love. The perk to this is that decorations in neutral colors and natural materials establish a good base that can take you from Thanksgiving all the way to New Year’s. This year, why not challenge yourself to use what decorations you have and create the rest? Get the kids and family involved and turn it into a fun activity for everyone. If you find that you are still in need of some staple items, look for them locally. Some of the best places to find unique vases, frames, and decorative bowls are at your local thrift and
antique stores. This is where you can find the classic (and sometimes even blue-colored) Ball mason jars, funky vases in greens and purples, and other decorations you can guarantee no one else will have. Here are some decorating ideas for each holiday using materials you can find around the house or yard, that are inexpensive and fun to create. Thanksgiving Decorations: Thanksgiving is all about bounty, the horn of plenty overflowing with squash and vegetables, long tables covered with turkey and pie and families gathering together. It is also a celebration of fall, the changing of the colors, the harvest of a season’s hard work, and the gentle reminder that the year is almost over. My favorite decorations for Thanksgiving incorporate natural materials. I like to fill my home with reminders of the changing season: orange pumpkins, fall leaves in yellows and reds, and wheat centerpieces. Here are some great ways to
Stay and clean up at the end of the night. If you’re an early-to-bed type (like myself), make a walk-through of the house and gather any empty bottles or glasses before you take off. Avoid the cell phone. This is a big one people. Set your phone to silent, and keep it in your purse or pocket. Don’t be that guest with your face glued to your screen.

decorate your home and Thanksgiving table that you can find in your own backyard. Pine cones: A bowl full of pine cones as a centerpiece on the table is one of my favorites, or you can tie labels to them to use them as name tags for your Thanksgiving seating arrangement. If you have more time on your hands string them into a garland and display them on your fireplace mantle, or wrap them around your stair railing. Pumpkins and Seasonal Squashes: Pumpkins don’t always have to be carved and set out on the front porch. Try gathering an assortment of various sizes and colors (don’t forget to incorporate squash!) and display them on a table at the entry of your home, or use them as a center piece for your table. Miniature pumpkins are great for decorating the table for Thanksgiving. Each place setting can include a mini pumpkin on the plate and can even double as a name card. Fall Leaves: Spread out colorful leaves on your table for a natural table runner, or press them between wax paper, cut them out and display them in windows. You can also use leaves as a base to your favorite candle assortment, arrange them around the base of a large Mason jar or vase then prop up a colored votive candle on pebbles or river rock. Branches: Whether the branches are barren or still have some colored leaves on them, they will make a beautiful and natural addition to
your décor. Grab medium-sized branches, aspen, oak, maple or manzanita and throw them in a tall vase to make a statement. Larger branches in a floor vase strung with white lights are a great visual option. Red winterberry branches are an excellent find as well, the bright red berries add a beautiful pop of color and the arrangement can easily transition into Christmas. Flowers: Glass vases, bowls, and rustic wood planters look gorgeous with fresh (or dried) fall flowers in arrangements of yellow, orange, red and purple colors. For a unique arrangement, cluster herbs and seasonal vegetables. Some of my favorites include hops, kale, green hollyhocks, artichokes, rosemary, beet greens, purple basil and chard.
goodies from the kids. Here are a few other ways to deck your halls this Christmas. Silver and Gold: Christmas doesn’t have to be all about red and green. I have always liked how silver and gold bring in the beauty of the wintery landscape. Spray paint branches or pine cones with silver or gold and throw them in a decorative bowl or vase. Or line the mantle or table with a collection of metallic vases or tchotchkes. Candles: Winter holidays are all about nights by the fire, consider illuminating your home with candles to give a more intimate feel. They also can dress up a room and make the place appear fancier. Try topping your holiday table with candle sticks and candelabras, or an
Christmas Decorations: When I think of Christmas decorations, I think of my old family home lit up with candles spiced with scents of ginger and pine, oozing comfort and warmth. For me, Christmas is all about creating a cozy environment for family and friends to gather. Think of ways to create warmth with lighting and candles. Include scents into your décor with pomander balls (oranges pierced with cloves and dried) or cinnamon sticks tied with ribbon and hung on the tree. Go beyond the Christmas tree and mantle too, window sills, bookcases, bedside tables, and entry sideboards are great areas to set up smaller trinkets like Santa Claus figurines, jars of holiday candy, and handmade

Garlands and Wreaths: Add your surname to a wreath on the front door with a glittered or colored letter and ribbon to welcome guests. Still have that Costco-sized bag of bows? Stick the bows in a circle on hard backing like cardboard and cut out the center for a homemade shimmery wreath. Evergreen garlands easily set the tone for Christmas, whether you adorn your mantel, kitchen cabinets or railing. Try a nontraditional material like your holiday cards, hung with clothespins and string along a mantle or wall. Ornaments: Use ornaments in places other than the tree. Fill vases and bowls and hang them along the stairway, from interior beams, or place them on the table as runner. Spread the Cheer: Do you have a chalkboard or dry erase board in your home? holiday cheer with your favorite holiday song lyrics, or a message of peace and good tidings. Or, let the kids (and adults!) draw a wintery wonderland landscape. New Year’s Decorations: New Year’s Eve is the last and biggest night of the year, so gather your friends and loved ones and throw a big party to say farewell to 2015 and welcome in 2016. The best part of this holiday is that anyone and everyone can decorate for the occasion, you just need to follow one simple rule: make everything glitter. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you to Modge Podge and glitter everything in sight, just make use of items that are shimmery, sparkly and bright. Here are a few fun ideas beyond the party hats

home to a swanky party house. Grab balloons in shades of gold, silver and white and blow up enough to cover the entire ceiling of your designated party room. Or, display them in gathered groups at the entrance and near the bar and buffet to set the tone to party mode. Sparkling Centerpiece: Use ball-shaped tree ornaments in gold, white, and silver and display them in your favorite glass vase to mimic rising bubbles in a glass of champagne. If you don’t have ornaments in that color, or if their still on the tree, try wrapped sweet treats like Hershey’s Kisses. Paper: This is another cost-effective material to use for holiday celebrations that’s also very versatile and low maintenance. Use leftover wrapping paper to make shimmering party streamers. You can connect them in the paper chain style or cut out shapes like circles or stars and string them from the ceiling. Re-use tissue paper from Christmas presents by repurposing them into different sized pom-poms that you can hang from the ceiling. Or, using individual sheets of paper or butcher paper, make a 2016 banner with glittered numbers.

Clocks: New Year’s Eve is all about the countdown, why not make your mantel a focal point with a collection of vintage clocks? Don’t have a collection? Local thrift and antique stores are great places to find items like this. Spray paint the clocks for a uniformed look, or leave them mismatched for a rustic chic vibe. Lighting: The more the merrier, I say. In the interior of your home, frame your mirrors with white string lights, include bathrooms too for a fun club-like feel. Or, string lights around your kitchen or living room and turn off the overheads. Dim lighting can set more of a tone for a good time. If you prefer candlelight, cluster groups of glass vases and open Mason jars, add an inch of Epsom salt and votive candles in ivory and white. For the exterior of your home, make your front porch a focal point for arriving guests. Try an arrangement with a large floor vase, some pine boughs, and more string lights, or direct your guests to the entry with traditional luminarias.

Thanksgiving Made Easy SOME LOW-STRESS GUIDELINES TO MAKE HOSTING DINNER EASY
BY SARAH POLYAKOV
You just found out that it’s your turn to host a group of family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner. Your first inclination might be to feel overwhelmed, but the good news is, it doesn’t have to be. I have compiled some time-saving tasks that allow you to do the bulk of the work in advance. This way, you can enjoy Thanksgiving Day with your guests instead of being a slave to the stove.
Four Days Before Thanksgiving
Ask For Help in Early November
Two Days Before Thanksgiving
This may seem like a no-brainer, but the easiest thing to do is to plan your menu and guest list in early November. Once you have those two things determined, reach out to some of your guests and see if they could provide an appetizer or side dish from the menu you have chosen. (No, you are not a complete failure if you ask for help.) Plus, most people like to be able to make and share their grandmother’s version of a classic recipe. After all, it keeps the memories alive for them and ensures continuity through the generations.
Make homemade relish and pumpkin pies. Cube the bread for homemade stuffing and refrigerate it. Make any of the casseroles that you plan to serve and refrigerate them.
Second Week of November Determine what kind of place settings, table decorations and floral arrangements you will use for your Thanksgiving table. Make the calls to a local florist and organize the rest of your decorations, plates and silverware in boxes or containers so that you can remove them immediately and place them on the table before the gathering. You don’t want to be searching for these items at the last second.
Begin defrosting the frozen turkey in the back of the refrigerator where it is coldest. Put together a shopping list of all of the food items that you will be providing. Purchase only the non-perishables on your list and organize them in a corner of your pantry so that you do not have to search for them when the time comes.
The Evening Before Thanksgiving Peel potatoes and put them in a pot of cold, salted water. Buy or prepare vegetable trays and homemade dips. Assemble cold-cut platters. Prepare yeast-based rolls that can rise slowly overnight. Thanksgiving Morning • 8am: Remove the turkey from the refrigerator, preheat the oven and prepare fresh stuffing. • 9am: Put the turkey in the oven, setting a timer to baste it every half hour. • 11am: Boil and mash the potatoes, bake the yeast rolls. • 2pm: Defrost casseroles and pies and set aside for reheating. • 3pm: When guests arrive, let them help with small tasks. Enjoy a happy Thanksgiving!

What is Your Goal? MAKING THIS NEW YEAR’S FITNESS RESOLUTION STICK
BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR
76
Every year millions of people make getting in shape their New Year’s resolution. It’s the “I’ll start Monday” mentality that we battle the rest of the year but on a much larger scale. But what exactly does getting in shape mean to us? What is our motivation? What are our goals exactly? Asking the why is probably the most important question to think through in order to optimize success. Learning the how to facilitate the why and subsequently devising a productive plan could turn this year’s resolution into next year’s reason to be thankful. It’s actually easier than you could have ever imagined. First, you need to write down your goals and how you think you can accomplish them. Spend some time researching people who have

done what you plan to do and how they did it. What were their struggles? One of the most crucial things to consider is safety. You need to make sure that the exercises you decide on are not inherently dangerous. Are you going to be using a video, going to a class, hiring a trainer or even buying a piece of equipment? Do your due diligence. I don’t typically recommend any videos that have strength training exercises in them like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges or squats. If you haven’t been exercising regularly, chances are your body needs a refresher on the proper mobility, flexibility, strength and reflexes to do these movements under qualified guidance. If professional guidance is absolutely off the table, video yourself doing the movements and watch the videos. If anything about the movements doesn’t look right, it isn’t.

We were all born with the ability to know what right or wrong looks and feels like, but unfortunately we all have to sit for long periods of time in our society so we tend to lose the ability to know what right or wrong feels like. Thankfully, we never lose the ability to know what right or wrong looks like. If when you watch the video and it doesn’t look like the movement you were trying to do, do some more research and continue to work on these movements like you would if learning any new skill. This is the skill of strength. Keep videoing and keep refining. You should eventually learn how to do the movements correctly and in the process get stronger, healthier and burn some calories. If you feel like you would have more success in a group setting (my personal favorite) or are wanting to join a class, make sure the instructor is a subject matter expert in what they are teaching. If you don’t feel comfortable asking for their qualifications, Google is a beautiful thing, and you can usually get all the information about your instructor you are looking for. I’m pretty good with instructing TRX and if your go to their website you’ll find that I can back that up with the amount of education I have in it. Most instructors don’t know what they don’t know, and just because they look fit doesn’t mean they know

Remember, adaptation is what a training protocol should provide, not just fatigue. Anyone can make you tired but can they make you stronger? If you are bargain shopping for fitness instruction you will get what you pay for. The more education your trainer or instructor invests in, the more they are investing in your success. how to instruct, correct, modify or when to refer people to a medical professional. I teach a lot of professional education around the country to health and fitness practitioners and approximately 80 percent don’t know how to properly teach or even do a squat themselves. The main reasons people don’t stay motivated is they lack direction or get injured. If you are in a class, make sure quality of movement is more important than quantity. The only thing a lot of bad movements will get you is an eventual injury. You should feel like you are ready to take over the world most days after training, not like you need a nap. Is Your Mouth Giving You a Headache? DISCOVER HOW CHRONIC HEADACHES CAN AFFECT YOUR LOOK BY RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS Dentistry is all about creating beautiful smiles, and that artistry doesn’t end with teeth whitening and veneers. Your oral health and your overall health have a big impact on your appearance. Chronic headaches can affect your look without you realizing it. Some questions to think about: • Do your headaches make you feel tired or irritable? • Are they affecting the quality of your family life? • Do your headaches cause you to have difficulty focusing at work? There may be a dental component to your headaches. Headaches are usually classified as: • Tension headaches – The most common type with feelings of pain and pressure, muscle aches, sleeplessness, and inability to concentrate. • Migraines – An estimated 18 to 28 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from migraines. They are characterized by throbbing pain, visual problems, facial numbness, sensitivity to light and sound, and queasiness. • Cluster headaches – The least common type, usually suffered by men. Cluster headaches begin as severe pain in one eye, resulting in swelling and watering of the eye. Dental problems are a frequent cause of headaches. Malocclusion – when the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly as the mouth closes – causes tension in jaw, facial, neck and shoulder muscles resulting in tension headaches. A history of trauma (falls, car accidents or sports injuries) can also cause bite related TMJ issues.
Through a thorough dental evaluation and compassionate discussion, your dentist can determine possible dental causes of your headaches and recommend answers. You may find relief from a comfortable mouth guard worn at night to minimize grinding or an oral appliance to keep the airway open and alleviate sleep apnea. Bite correction with modern orthodontia or restorative dental procedures can eliminate headache triggers. A computerized bite analysis that takes the sum of four quick bites can provide information about where you bite first and how much pressure you put on your teeth. Your back molars should have 10 to 15 percent of your overall bite force. The smaller premolars average 6 to 9 percent of the bite force. Your front teeth: 1 to 4 percent. In addition to your bite analysis, your range of motion and a TMJ/ head and neck exam can reveal if some or all of your headache issues are caused by your dental condition. Consider a dental solution rather than overthe-counter and prescription medications that only treat symptoms and slow you down. If your bite isn’t in balance, you can get massage therapy, chiropractic treatment or physical therapy, but the pain typically returns. You don’t have to suffer from headaches or take a handful of pills to get through the day. Make an appointment with your dentist to find relief from chronic headache pain – and rediscover that beautiful smile!

Positive Parenting EFFECTIVE POSITIVE DISCIPLINE STRATEGIES FOR CHILDREN BY MIRIAM DRESSLER, DIRECTOR OF LEARNING AND EDUCATION, BLOOM EARLY EDUCATION Children are constantly exploring and testing both the world and you to see what works and what doesn’t, learning what’s right and wrong, safe and dangerous, appropriate and inappropriate, and so on. In fact, children are supposed to be doing this in order to learn anything at all about the world and the people in it. As the parent, you are the “guardian” of the boundaries, limits and rules, so naturally will be put in the position of enforcement and giving consequences. There are two kinds of discipline — negative and positive. Both are effective in their own way, and both have long-term consequences for your child. Negative discipline, like yelling, spanking and other punishments, is effective in the moment because it almost immediately stops the misbehavior. In the long run, children who experience a lot of negative discipline learn to lie, be underhanded, pass blame and work very hard at not getting caught! Being honest becomes difficult for these children. The fear of the negative punishment will cause them to look for a way out of trouble. Positive discipline is a longer process and takes focus, intention and patience. The longterm goal is to teach children self-discipline by getting them to understand and experience the consequences of their behavior. This is quite a task! Positive discipline is not for the faint-hearted. It takes calm and patience. Your focus is on “breaking” your child’s misbehavior, and not your child. Effective positive discipline needs to be consistent, predictable for the child, and handled in

the same way by all the adults in the home. If there are too many inconsistencies, your child will quickly figure out how to act out to get what they want. Try these two techniques and note the positive changes in your child: Natural Consequences are things that just happen because children are being careless, not listening to warnings, or just being children. It’s often far more beneficial to let it happen than not, as these experiences are powerful teachers, provided these consequences are not physically harmful, of course. Your role is to explain to your child what has happened and then pause to let them think. Example, “Michael, your cup fell over because you’re not sitting still at the table. Now your clothes are wet and there’s no more milk.” Pause, and then take the next step. Logical Consequences are consequences that are attached to specific actions or misbehaviors. The trick here is that they need to be logically connected. If your child makes a mess, the logical consequence is to have him clean it up. Everything stops for the child until clean-up has happened. It’s a simple act of “Do and Undo.” These two simple strategies give you, the parent, a starting point to handling challenging behaviors and can help you rein in your own emotional response. Both of you will be happier and calmer for it in the long run!

Mindful Eating TIPS TO MAINTAIN PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST
Eating mindfully means to be 100 percent conscious and aware of the foods we’re eating and why. It’s about being present with our food. This can take a lifetime to learn and some of us may never get it. But, eating mindlessly can truly be detrimental to our physical and emotional health. Therefore, it’s vital, especially during the busy, stressful holiday season to attempt to pay more attention to what goes into our bodies simply for the sake of our health. This is not a holiday diet plan; it will not deprive you of the things you truly enjoy every holiday season. It’s not meant to help you lose weight or to eat more healthfully this season. It approaches food in a more thoughtful manner, asking ourselves “why” we’re eating something in attempts to reduce dangerous emotional and overeating. Eat off a plate Every diet book says this, but there is so much truth to it! When we eat off a plate, we are tuned into the amounts of food we are consuming. Pacing around eating a little of this and a little of that can sneak in a whole meal’s worth of food! Whenever appetizers are out, pick up a plate, you’ll be surprised at how quickly it adds up! Location! Be strategic about where you stand at holiday gatherings. If you can’t control yourself around all the candied nuts, peanut brittle and cookies, don’t socialize near the dessert table. Instead, find a cozy place next to the fire or on the couch.
Leave the grumbling at home Don’t show up to a holiday party with a grumbling stomach. This sets us up to overeat by over-compensating for our hunger. Have a light snack just before you arrive and you’ll automatically eat less. Be a role model Let others learn from your mindful ways. We all have those people in our lives that want to feed us with love. If you’re not hungry or don’t desire something, firmly say “no thank you.” No one will disown you for being strong. Choose one indulgence Before heading to a get together, pinpoint one thing that you know will be there and that you really want. Desire makes it taste that much sweeter. Listen to your body If we pay attention to when we are hungry, or full, we tune into the “other” reasons we may be eating such as boredom or stress. Always have a game plan At the end of the day, the main thing you need is a game plan. Before every gathering, have an idea of what you’re planning on eating, drinking and how you’re going to say “no” if you have to. Make a plan to check-in with yourself from time to time and to feel good about your decisions.
Be honest and true to yourself

Independent Retirement & Assisted Living Community
Would you feel guilty if you threw away the ginger molasses cookies your great aunt went through all that trouble to make? Don’t! You owe it to yourself to respect what goes in your body and to eat only the things you love. Ask yourself, “Am I enjoying this?” If the answer is no or maybe, put the fork down. Save what you consider an “indulgence” to be truly satisfying to you.

A Part of Holiday Foods Past and Present CARRAGEENAN DATES BACK HUNDREDS OF YEARS
When you think of holiday dinners, it’s likely that the first image that comes to mind is a golden, roasted turkey. While the bird may take center stage, for many it’s the hearty sides – creamy gravy, silken mashed potatoes – and delicious desserts – fruit pies and sweet puddings – whose rich flavors and textures make the holiday feast. No matter your preference, the special ingredients in these treasured traditions are important. It’s the hint of this or the dash of that which leave you salivating, but it could well be a centuries-old ingredient called carrageenan that makes it all hang together delivering the perfect bite every time. Carrageenan, pronounced [kar-uh-gee-nuh n], is a soluble fiber product of red seaweed. It is a food ingredient from a natural source. While it might sound new to you, carrageenan actually has its origins in small kitchens across the globe and back hundreds of years. The name carrageenan is believed to have its roots in the Gaelic language and was used as a gelling agent in making milk puddings in Ireland and Scotland as long as 600 years ago. Today, carrageenan is used in much the same way for prepared pies and frozen desserts. In your favorite pumpkin pie, carrageenan offers that perfectly creamy, but not too dense, taste and texture. For ice cream, carrageenan

helps provide a uniform, smooth consistency, especially in lower-fat offerings like frozen yogurt. Carrageenan is especially useful for its ability to create a creamy, indulgent dessert while also reducing the amount of sugar and fat in the recipe. It can also make some of your foods last longer and without refrigeration. Carrageenan’s use is not limited to desserts. You may find it in a prepared soup, mixed with other ingredients to create a thick, hearty texture. Your favorite hot cocoa might include carrageenan to keep each sip rich and equally chocolately. Or carrageenan may be the “certain something” that gives gravy a lovely, even finish. Carrageenan is approved for use in for organic foods, and meets vegan, halal and kosher standards, making it a popular ingredient in foods at health food and specialty stores alike. So, as you enjoy the foods that define your holiday tradition, give thanks for all the ingredients that go into the celebratory meals that you look forward to year round. Visit carrageenan.info to learn more about carrageenan.

TRAVELANDLEISURE
A TROPICAL PARADISE
Kauai, Hawaii offers both serenity and adventure By Colin Anderson & Stephanie Krebs-Anderson There is a lot to be thankful for living in the Northwest, but November weather is not one of them. The days are short, the temperatures are chilly, and gray drizzle makes things just wet enough to mess up your day. On these days we remember the wonderful islands of Hawaii where it’s almost always 80 degrees and sunny. As a couple that has a serious travel bug, it’s rare we visit the same place twice. But after our first trip to the island of Kauai, we were back again this past May, less than two years later. There are slices of paradise on each of the Hawaiian Islands, but for those looking to step out from behind the all-inclusives, dinner shows, and crowded Waikiki and add some

adventure to your vacation, the north shore of Kauai simply can’t be beat. In and around Hanalei Bay you will find some of the most spectacular beaches and scenery in the world. You can surf, snorkel, scuba, hike, bike and fly. This truly is a remarkable island, and your visit will bring you a new found appreciation for nature. His Perspective As a traveler, I like to see and experience as much of an area as I can because who knows if I’ll ever be back again. Relaxing on the beach is always part of the trip, but I can only lounge for so long before wanting to find the next

experience. This might be my favorite thing about Kauai. You can drive up and down the North Shore, find plenty of places to explore, and if you feel like a little beach time, just pull over and plop down your chair and towel. Kauai is known for adventure both by sea and land. One of my favorite excursions we’ve taken is something you wouldn’t likely come across at the concierge desk. Our group of four hired a local by the name of “T” to take us into the center of the island and float down a centuryold irrigation canal originally created to bring water from the mountains to the taro fields and pineapple plantations in the valleys below. The drive was on one of the roughest and craziest

year to camp out at Kalalau Beach — one of the most beautiful beaches and backdrops you will ever see. The trail is steep and rocky, and you traverse streams that can swell at a moment’s notice. Both times we’ve done this hike it has down poured for a short time making for an even wilder experience.
Another great land adventure is hiking the first 2 miles of the Kalalau trail. This trail begins where the road literally dead ends. It’s an 11mile hike that wraps around the famous Na Pali Coast which you can also tour by sail boat, zodiac, kayak or helicopter. This hike is rated a difficulty 9.5 out of 10 by the Sierra Club, but the first 2 miles are doable if you are in decent shape and have hiking experience. Permits are needed to go further than 2 miles, but thousands of people make the 11-mile trek each
Back in the water, you’ll find a colorful array of fish snorkeling at Ke’e beach, excellent surf and boogie boarding waves in the picture perfect 2-mile crest beach of Hanalei Bay, and will more than likely come across giant sea turtles snorkeling at Anini Beach. Having such an immense turtle swimming just feet away from you is really an amazing experience.

upscale fine dining, and shops carrying trinket souvenirs to fine art. You’ll notice that only a couple bars stay open past dinner, but after a day of exploring and sunny beaches, most retire early instead of seeking out the nightlife. If you get the chance to visit this island, enjoy the beaches, but don’t be afraid to step out and find your own adventure. Her Perspective When my husband and I settled on a vacation to the island of Kauai and began to talk to friends and colleagues about our trip, one of the most common things we heard from other visitors of the island was “Kauai is incredible.” After having visited the island twice, I agree. The Hawaiian island of Kauai is one of the

most beautiful places on earth. The island has natural presence that truly must be seen to be believed. Kauai served as the backdrop to many famous movies (Jurassic Park and Blue Hawaii for example) so you likely have seen this spectacular place before without even realizing it. If you are in search of a tropical paradise that comes complete with stunning, high lush green mountain peaks that seem to always be draped in a shroud of mist and that are contrasted against a coastline of white sand beaches and rolling turquoise blue ocean waves, look no further than Kauai. The “Garden Island” is the perfect backdrop for burying your toes in the sand and your nose in a book while the ocean crashes to the shore. You can boogie board, surf and drink beer from your cooler while you get far too much sun and apply too little sunblock. You will probably have more than one encounter with some of the most colorful chickens you have ever seen, as they inhabit the island and seem to be its most numerous residents. These free-range creatures will probably be your morning alarm clock too. They seem to be lurking everywhere, including outside your window. Impressive sunrises on the island make for a perfect excuse for getting up early for a run, taking a yoga class on the beach, or walking down to the nearby beach to stand in the ocean and watch the sun come up for the day.

Opting for a vacation rental by owner over a hotel will usually include the perks of having a little more privacy, a lot more space, and typically a cache of beach gear to let you create your own experience. Plus, if you have a kitchen, it can easily be stocked. The island boasts multiple farmers markets, with one happening most nights of the week. The markets are a great chance to be amazed at how much better things grow in the tropical climate (hello giant onions!) and to find and try fruit not typically found at your regular Pacific Northwest farmer’s market (hello papayas!).

Is creating your adventure just not your style? There are also tons of resources and companies that will ensure your vacation has just the right amount zip-lining, surfing, fishing, snorkeling or whatever you enjoy. If you are looking to have a rocking party where you stay up late and hop from club to club, this is not the place for you. And no one is going to walk up to you and try to sell you some trinket you don’t need. Kauai’s charms are much more natural and serene – and when you leave you’ll find yourself planning the next trip before you get home.

Harbor WildWatch Benefit a Success
On Saturday, October 10, Harbor WildWatch hosted their First Annual Benefit Dinner in the newest event space in downtown Gig Harbor. Decorated with boat netting, white lights and candles, the Club at the BoatYard offered the perfect venue, and its fireplace, heaters and curtains created a comfortable and cozy atmosphere.
Child’s generosity sparks donations By Lindsey Johnson • Photos by Julie Reed
Many members of the greater Gig Harbor community attended, with representatives from Gig Harbor Rotary, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation, and the Gig Harbor Boatyard & Marina. Guests enjoyed wine from Henry Earl Estates and Naked Wines, and the evening would not have been complete without the signature cocktail—the “Sea Star on the Rocks”—provided by Heritage Distilling Company.

Brix25 catered the event, serving a wonderful shellfish risotto as the main course, and Taylor Shellfish Farms provided an oyster bar as well as the seafood for the dinner. As guests enjoyed their meal, the evening’s program began, and Mike Behrens, a professor of biology at Pacific Lutheran University, gave the keynote address. Behrens emphasized the optimism present in scientific learning and environmental education.
The evening concluded with a story. Last month, one of Harbor WildWatch’s SeaStar and Beyond students, Morgan, turned 9-yearsold. For her birthday party, Morgan asked her friends and family instead to donate to Harbor WildWatch in lieu of gifts, and she raised $200 for the organization. Guests were asked to match Morgan’s generosity, and they did just that; the event raised nearly $10,000 for Harbor WildWatch’s youth programs.
