PUBLISHER’S

Note

TRADITIONS - THEY ARE WHAT MEMORIES ARE MADE OF IT’S THANKSGIVING TIME, which also marks the beginning of the holidays. Ushering in the season filled with shopping, holiday parties and spending time with family, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect; a time to give thanks for all that we have been blessed with. Personally, I love Thanksgiving because it represents so much more than a day of reflection. It means coming together as a family to carry on traditions that have been established throughout the years.

“WHERE FAMILY IS ALWAYS FIRST.” “ We are committed to providing professional, compassionate assistance in a safe and nurturing environment, ensuring a life of dignity and independence for seniors in our community.”

Whether it is participating in an early Thanksgiving morning fun run, getting together with friends and family to play a game of football or simply working together in the kitchen preparing cherished family recipes, families often have their own traditions that they look forward to each year. And if you are a Dallas Cowboys or Detroit Lions fan, well there is always the guarantee of a pro football game on Thanksgiving Day to cheer on your favorite team!

Local Library Love Learning, Enjoyment and Connection with the Community BY BRETT MARLO DESANTIS | PHOTOS COURTESY OF GIG HARBOR PIERCE COUNTY LIBRARY

D

id you know the oldest lending library in America was founded in 1747?

A community just isn’t a community without a local library. Libraries promote our quality of life by protecting our public values, assisting in civic engagement and offering knowledge and skills. Nowadays, they even help job seekers gain employment in our own communities. Publicly funded, libraries help facilitate a better understanding of democracy in action, providing the physical and digital spaces that are essential for civic engagement; public spaces that are neutral and inviting to everyone, no matter who they are, what they do, where they come from or what they believe with equal access to information and knowledge. Our local libraries as we know them are run by the Pierce County Library System (PCLS) and are highly used and well loved. With 20 library locations and more than half of the population service areas as active cardholders, there are more than 2 million visits inside these buildings every year. Our communities are growing—and so is the amount of people relying on library services. In 2017, PCLS announced over six and a half million items were checked out!

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

In May of this year, the University of Washington published a paper on public libraries as platforms for civic engagement. They were curious about what role should the world’s public libraries have in the encouragement of citizens to become more involved in politics and issues important to them. So they invited a select group of thought leaders for a conversation aimed at sparking new ideas and solutions for global action. What they learned is “public libraries can start the conversation and provide the physical spaces, but the impetus for continued civic engagement needs to originate in communities themselves.” Libraries are not only a place to visit, they provide outreach as well. According to the UW study, “In recent years, libraries have moved from an internal focus (i.e., “We know what we do best and we provide it”) to a focus on community engagement, where librarians leave the building and conduct outreach (i.e., “What does the community care about and how can we give it to them?”). By going into the community, librarians see what needs there are and become responsive to the people they serve.” According to Mary Getchell, marketing and communications director of Pierce County Library System, what library cardholders value most is learning, enjoyment and connection with the community. She states that the beauty of the democracy of a public library is having an informed constituency.

reading is important! Librarians go out into the community to assess local needs and are responsive when developing programs. Some of the local needs include credible e-sources and fact-checking, what’s news and what isn’t. Here in the South Sound, sites include childcare centers and adult care facilities and homebound people. In more recent years librarians are working with soldiers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord; those who are transitioning into civilian employment. PCLS also partners with Worksource, a statewide partnership which combines the services of a variety of government, nonprofit and private organizations to create a one-stop resource for business and job seekers to access employment and training services. They also partner with the Emergency Food Network, United Way and sponsor community events. While many American libraries are being reinvested in with new renovations and expansions, our local libraries are suffering from a collective $20 million deficit over the past 10 years. Currently, 94 percent of funding for our local libraries is paid by property taxes. The remaining 6 percent comes from the Friends of the Library, E-Rate, fines on overdue books and materials, as well as grants. With a laundry list of needs, such as lack of funds for staffing, attaining more books and materials and much deferred maintenance on infrastructure, the library system has asked our

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

community to approve a restored levy to maintain library services. In an era of digital infrastructure with a shift toward transparency, could libraries combine and connect the physical gathering of local people with regional and national level engagement? With growing interest in technical labs, vocational classes and makerspaces, will we reinvest in our public infrastructure? Will our interests change how we design our future libraries? Libraries have become more resilient and adaptable through community outreach. How will we, as members of our community, reach out to support this system and ensure our access to free information? Check out upcoming events: Pierce County Conversations. These events occur at many PCLS locations. Here are a couple of the Gig Harbor events. November through December 2018 In honor of the 24th Annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24, December 3 through 14, Katowice, Poland) Pierce County Library encourages you to explore topics of Climate Change. IT’S THE SEASON FOR ENTERTAINING

PREPARE TO IMPRESS YOUR GUESTS WITH THESE DINING ROOM TIPS BY ALINDA MORRIS, ALINDA MORRIS INTERIOR DESIGN LLC PHOTOS BY HAILEY ROSE CALDERA AND ALEX HAYDEN

W

hether you’re cooking or not this holiday season, now is the time to make sure your dining room is ready to welcome family and friends. The Basics You really should start with your table and chairs. I try and avoid an overly fussy, formal table. I take inspiration from nature. I like reclaimed wood and natural materials because they are easy to live with. You can pair a rustic table with more formal chairs for a comfortable, relaxed result. Your larger statement pieces set the tone and should speak to your personality and lifestyle. I love to mix genres in the dining room. Scale I always consider the size of the space and how my client will use the space. The dining table is the centerpiece of this space, and you want to allow at least 24 inches for each person. A 7-foot-long table will seat eight people and 8 to 9 feet long will seat 10. If your table allows for it, you might be able to squeeze in another seat or two for those occasional larger gatherings.

to the table. Ideally, 42 to 48 inches is the perfect clearance between the table and walls. Mix and Match Entertaining should be fun, not stressful. If you have not found the perfect table yet—or if you are just starting out—you can save money by draping your table. When you drape it with fabrics, you can make the table appear as big as it needs to be so you have ultimate flexibility. Start with a color scheme of no more than three colors. I like to mix styles and textures. You can also get funky chairs that have a lot of chicness without spending a fortune. They do not have to match but should be “friends.” Look for consistent colors or materials, as this will add continuity. Finishing touches: The key to a space that feels relaxed and comfortable is that it feels finished. Add art to the walls and fresh flowers to finish the space. Also be sure to keep the table centerpieces low so guests can see each other. Best Advice Invest in the very best you can afford. If you are struggling to find your design style or are overwhelmed by the options, hire a professional to help.

KEY TERMS TO KNOW ABOUT MEDICARE PART D

(BPT) - NAVIGATING THE INS AND OUTS OF MEDICARE can be an intimidating experience if you're not familiar with certain terms. Medicare Part D, which helps cover prescription drugs, has its own terminology. Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, so now is the time for a refresher on key words to inform your coverage decisions for 2019. Deductible, copay and coinsurance - A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket in a given year for eligible prescription drugs before your plan's coverage kicks in. The deductible can vary from plan to plan. Some plans charge a copay each time you fill a prescription. With coinsurance, you pay a set percentage of the cost of the drug instead of the flat fee associated with a copay. Formulary - Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, and each plan has what's known as a formulary, a list of the prescription drugs covered under the plan. "When considering a Part D plan, review the formulary to make sure your medications are covered," said Kent Monical, senior vice president for Part D at UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. Drug tiers - A Medicare Part D plan's formulary is made up of tiers, depending on the cost of the medications. The lower tiers generally include preferred generic drugs, and many plans cover these medicines with low or

no copay or coinsurance. Higher tiers generally include brand-name drugs and specialty medications and tend to have higher copays or coinsurance. Talk to your doctor to see if the brand-name prescription you take can be replaced with a generic version. Preferred pharmacy network - A Part D plan may designate a preferred network of pharmacies, and if you use these pharmacies, you can save money on prescriptions. "Make sure the plan offers access to pharmacies that are convenient for you," Monical said. "Some plans also have mail-order pharmacy benefits, and you may be able to get prescriptions delivered to your home for a lower cost than purchasing from a retail location." The donut hole - The majority of Part D plans have a coverage gap known as a "donut hole." For example, in 2019, you enter this donut hole once your out-of-pocket costs (including deductibles, copays and coinsurance) for prescription drugs reach $3,820. While you're in the donut hole, you will pay a percentage of the cost of the drugs. Once your out-of-pocket costs reach $5,100, you exit the donut hole and pay a smaller coinsurance. But, the days of the donut hole are numbered. Beginning in 2019, the maximum you will pay in the coverage gap for a branded drug is 25 percent of a drug's cost. For generic drugs, it is 37 percent. TAKING THE TIME TO LIVE IN THE MOMENT

“One of the biggest challenges business leaders face today is how to manage at the speed of accelerating change.” - Rod Collins “Go slow to go fast” is an idea that’s been around for a long time. Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire, regularly used the phrase, “Festina Lente,” which translates to: “Make haste, slowly.” Certainly, the pace in Augustus’ day was much slower; nevertheless, human nature was not that different. Each person, in their own way, wants to win the day. In the world of business, isn’t our default approach to go faster, to be first and most profitable? Except for slow food, we don’t hear much “slow” talk. As business owners, we live in an environment of accelerating change. Improvements in products and services aren’t enough. Those improvements need to be communicated in a very busy market place. Marketing and promotions that worked last year are obsolete. The technologies for delivering products and services need updated. Responding to customers, keeping up to date with changing laws, empowering and engaging employees and responding to the inevitable disruptions push us to respond faster and faster. Stress is on the rise. Paradoxically, stress comes from feeling we have to move faster just to keep up, but it also comes from feeling behind or that we’re missing out when we slow down. To this mix of “go, go, go,” we add the holidays, days intended for gratitude and to celebrate our accomplishments—and our faith—with

family, friends, customers, employees and our community. Beginning with Thanksgiving and proceeding through the festivities of December, the pace picks up. On the business side, we’re trying to reach year-end goals—and possibly supporting some of the busiest times of the year. On the consumer side, we add shopping and party planning. No wonder holidays are stressful, and so many people feel they’re too commercial and that they’ve lost their meaning. Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or another holiday, now is the time to pause and decide on the meaning you’ll put into the holidays. Now is the time to go slow so that when you go fast, you create wonderful memories of your 2018 holidays. Enjoying your holidays matter. People matter. Creating memories matters. Your sense of satisfaction matters. These three simple steps, taken now, will help you experience greater joy when the pace picks up during November and December. First: Begin with the end in mind. What would you love to experience during your 2018 holidays? Take a moment to imagine that it’s January 1, 2019 and your holidays were the best ever. Tell the story of your holiday season and reflect on the moments you enjoyed the most. If you’re a business owner, include your business wins. Expand on the special times you shared with the people in your life.

LIFE & COMMUNITY

True Fair Trade Marketplace returns to Chapel Hill

Give Gifts of Purpose This

Y

ou can make a positive impact this holiday season by shopping the 17th annual Festival of Hope, which takes place November 16 through 18 at Chapel Hill Church, 7700 Skansie Avenue right here in Gig Harbor. This year’s event offers a rich selection of handmade jewelry, fashionable handbags, scarves, gloves, hats, organic coffee, children’s items, vibrant décor and more. All items for sale are crafted in safe and ethical working conditions, whether the product was produced in the United States, Haiti, Thailand and beyond. All profits return to support workers, farmers and families from around the world. “Festival of Hope is an event designed for the whole community and focuses on telling the

stories of artisans from around the world—all while allowing people to get ahead on their holiday shopping!” says Rebekah Ueland, communications coordinator.

Regular shopping hours will take place Saturday, November 17, 10am to 3pm and 5 to 8:30pm, and Sunday, November 18, 8am to 3pm. Admission is free both days.

Chapel Hill hosts this annual community event to provide shoppers the opportunity to purchase and give gifts more intentionally throughout the holiday season. “Every purchase we make has the power to impact lives around the world. Our gift-giving is an opportunity not only to show love for our family and friends, but also to acknowledge the farmers, craftsmen and laborers who create those gifts,” according to Beth Burgess, director of Volunteer Engagement. “Fair Trade shopping allows us to choose justice over slavery and love over oppression. We believe that’s part of ‘loving our neighbor’ as Jesus teaches.”

In addition to regular shopping hours, Chapel Hill will host two special events. Ladies Night takes place Friday, November 16, starting at 6pm. It’s a fun evening of hors d’oeuvres, early shopping and girl time. The event is limited to 100 attendees. Saturday, November 17 at 8am, you can enjoy the Women’s Breakfast, a morning of food, friends and shopping. This event is limited to 140. All registrants will receive a Fair Trade swag bag. Registration, which is $12 per event, can be done online at ChapelHillPC.org/FOH.

The Gathering Place Local artist transforms studio into community hub for social outreach BY DAN AZNOFF PHOTOS BY NICK BALERA

P

hotographer Nick Balera may only be 26 years old. He’s an old soul who has opened the doors of his personal space to help build a community of individuals who share a vision for Gig Harbor. Balera is the owner of The Harbor Studio, a storefront that serves as the artistic outlet for his video and photography business. He has swung open the doors of his business to bring together business owners with creative minds who, he hopes, will fill the sidewalks, front doors and windows of local commerce with examples of artistic innovation. “The studio began by providing space for local artists and freelancers to hone their skills,” he explained. “It quickly grew to become a safe place for artists to share hopes and dreams. Everybody wants Gig Harbor to become an example of how art can enhance the community and become an important clog in the machinery of success.” The native of Port Orchard describes his studio as a “creative event space” that serves as a hub for the creative community in Gig Harbor. Studio, he said, has become a blank canvas for the blend of art and business. From his perspective, Gig Harbor is a tight-knit community with a history of supporting local businesses and business owners. The Harbor Studio is Balera’s way to help the wave of new, younger residents feel part of the village. His immediate goal is to establish a relationship with the city of Gig Harbor to provide a direct pipeline of creative ideas to become public art. His current passion has been the establishment of a Creative Residency that provides free studio time for artists working on a specific project. Artists are invited to apply for the residency online with a description of how they envision an end-product will benefit the community. Those selected receive 15 hours of free studio time, which, Balera said, usually breaks down to three half-days to create and produce a project they are passionate about. “People can use the time to book 10 shoots for a video,” Balera said, “then use the balance of the time to create something they may not have the time or the capabilities to produce on their own.”

“The studio began by providing space for local artists and freelancers to hone their skills,” Balera explained. “It quickly grew to become a safe place for artists to share hopes and dreams." The artist-in-residence emphasized the Creative Residency does not include any instruction, but it does make the backdrops and lighting at the studio available for creative outlets. Students, young professionals and musicians were the first people to access advice from Balera for videos to promote their own projects. They were followed by business owners who utilized the studio owner’s ability to tell a story with pictures to promote their own business. Others have created music videos that document entire concerts that musicians have used to market themselves to venues and record labels. “They are not music videos in the MTV image most people have,” Balera said. “They are marketing tools with a creative flair that use musicians and the music they create.” Some would-be artists have used the equipment at the studio to create podcasts and a variety of medias to honor veterans in the community. The Harbor Studio reflects the laid-back

attitude of its owner. The Washington native said many people who come to the studio ask if he grew up in Tennessee because of his casual drawl. “The studio is an extension of who I am and what I want to bring to this community,” said Balera. “It’s much easier to connect with somebody you can relate to than a serious face who fills a video by blurting out generic language of self-promotion.” In addition to the creative space he has created, Balera also hosts a weekly Coffee Club on Monday mornings, where he serves free coffee and pastries to business owners who want to market themselves to other professionals in the community. Unlike formal networking organizations, he said the Coffee Club is a casual gathering of like-minded business owners who explore ways to help each other reach their business goals and fulfill their visions. “I am a person who thrives on relationships,” he explained. “It is vitally important to know

the person and the story behind every business and their dreams. We all have similar passions and goals that are often parallel.” For Balera, that goal is supporting a cause to make the world a better place. He described his photography and his studio as “a means to a higher good.” He compared his efforts to the coffee company that only uses beans from fair trade sources to generate profits that are donated to efforts to end human trafficking. TEACHER OF THE MONTH

Shauna Coxford BY COLIN ANDERSON

"When we wrap our students with the support that they need and give them the sense of love, safety and belonging, then students can learn and be successful."

U

nlike high school educators who often teach around one subject or a couple at most, elementary school teachers help hone skills for every subject, from reading and math to science and art. When you stop to think about it, that is a lot to take on for one educator. What we often don’t realize is that elementary educators aren’t left alone, and there is a team of people often behind the scenes helping ensure both teacher and student succeed. Shauna Coxford is in her 17th year as an educator, currently teaching third grade at Harbor Heights Elementary. She’s watched hundreds of young people grow into young adults and seen many of her students go on to higher education. She also knows that school is not easy for every student and that there is not a uniform way of teaching that fits all young minds. Shauna recalls having a student with behavioral challenges that made her job much more difficult and stressful. If she was left alone to handle the student, the situation may have gotten out of control. But Shauna was surrounded by a team of people who helped support the student and his family by giving him the services and resources needed for his situation. “Teaching is not a solo profession that helps our students,” she said. “This job is a true collaboration among a team of professionals

consisting of principals, counselors, social workers, para-professionals and community liaisons.” Without the resources and other professionals in place, Shauna believes this student would not have received the help that he—and his family—needed to be successful. “When we wrap our students with the support that they need and give them the sense of love, safety and belonging, then students can learn and be successful. This type of story is true year after year from school to school,” said Shauna. The fun of seeing her students’ faces light up when she shows them progress from where they started to where they are is something that keeps Shauna going each school year. She is constantly coming up with new ideas or projects to get her kids excited about learning, and though school can be challenging, always encourages her students to do their best.

“I teach my students that our brain is a muscle, and it takes time and exercise to work our muscles just like our body. Over time our brain gets stronger, but we have to work on the hard stuff.” As Shauna’s students learn new things this school year, they’ll be surprised by the end so see just how much they’ve progressed, and it won’t be long before Shauna and the team around her sees these kids become great young men and women.

ach flag has its own story of patriotism. Each banner tells an intimate tale of dedication and sacrifice by a cherish individual.

As a group, the display of flags along the waterfront in Gig Harbor expresses the admiration local residents hold for those who have left the community to defend the freedom that binds all Americans. The display of flags currently flying along the waterfront in Gig Harbor was designed to be an opportunity for families to honor sons and daughters, mothers and fathers or beloved neighbors and members of the community who have served, or continue to serve, in the Armed Forces.

Mary Desmarais admits the flags were not an original idea but something she knew would be adopted by the Gig Harbor community as its own. The executive director of the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance was introduced to the banners while attending a conference this year in Kansas. “My first thought was that our organization does not do enough to honor veterans,” Desmarais recalled. “This was a program that would not only honor those who served but an opportunity to provide for those who continue to live with the scars from their service.” The banners feature a photograph of a service man or woman. Each is sponsored by somebody in the community who wanted to show their

gratitude in a public venue. The separate branches of the military are each represented by a different color. One of the banners was purchased by Heidi Roundtree to honor her father, Art Broback, who served in the Navy for 20 years. His enlistment included time across the Pacific during the Korean War. Broback will turn 88 in February. “Service to his country was always important to our dad,” reflected Roundtree. “When we met Mary (Desmarais) at a Farmers Market last summer and learned about the flags, we thought it would be a nice thing to do for our dad. It was a natural.” When the flags went up, Heidi and her family

brought their father to the Gig Harbor waterfront to surprise him with the flag that had been made in his honor. “His eyes just lit up,” she remembered. “He asked us what he had done to deserve such an honor." Roundtree told her father the family has always been proud of his service. The flag was a way to show the family’s admiration for their patriarch. The proud daughter said the honor was especially important to her father because there are so few of his contemporaries still around for him to share stories with. Broback was a builder who developed University Place. He went on to serve in the state legislature. Mickey Traugutt made the decision to honor

other business owners in Gig Harbor by sponsoring 11 of the flags. “It was important to me that people know that some of the people they know and deal with on a regular basis are veterans,” said Traugutt. “It does not matter if they were combat veterans or stayed home to protect American soil, these brave individuals deserve to be honored. It was the very least I could do.” Traugutt is co-owner of Washington Patriot Construction. He said he was glad to see Gig Harbor “step up to the plate” to do more than just hold a ceremony to honor veterans. Proceeds from the sponsorship of the flags, Desmarais said, will be donated to the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation, a local nonprofit

organization that provides assistance to soldiers who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Each sponsor pays $200 for the banner. The banners are made locally at a cost of $150, with the difference donated the foundation. The impressive gauntlet of flags was hung in September before the annual Race For A Soldier and are expected to remain up until Veteran’s Day in November. Since its inception in 2011, the annual race has provided almost $300,000 to national and local programs that provides tools for soldiers to give themselves Permission To Start Dreaming, according to the organization. The event on September 15 next year will feature a 10-mile course as well as the 5k for individuals who prefer to walk or run the traditional route.

THE FLAGS ALONG THE WATERFRONT OF GIG HARBOR ARE A VIVID REMINDER OF THE SACRIFICE LOCAL FAMILIES HAVE MADE. The PTSD foundation was created by Leslie Mayne, in part, to honor the memory of her son Kyle, who took his own life in a hotel room in Baltimore after returning from his deployment in Iraq. Leslie sponsored a flag on the waterfront to remember her son. “It means so much to me that Gig Harbor has chosen to honor members of the military in this manner,” said Mayne. “When you honor one veteran, you honor all veterans for their service. It says so much about the people and the community of Gig Harbor. It’s hard to describe my gratitude.” Mayne was with friends and relatives in Texas when she received the tragic phone call about her son. He had been released from treatment for symptoms of PTSD and had been living on the East Coast near his father. “He was my baby and my best friend,” she recalled in a soft voice. “The VA (Veterans Administration) hospital had been treating him with drugs then released him without any real plan for him to cope with the nightmare he had been through. Mayne knew she had to return to the Northwest to “do something to honor my son’s memory.” Her friends in Texas filled the tank of her car and provided the saddened mother with gift cards to make the long ride home more tolerable.

The flags along the waterfront of Gig Harbor are a vivid reminder of the sacrifice local families have made. The program offers a chance to see the faces and know the names of members of the military who deserve to be honored and remembered.

Kyle’s mother had worked with nonprofit organizations for years and was familiar with the many details it required to stage an event to fund her dream of an association that could honor the soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend their country.

It was that passion that drove him to practice continuously in the off season, playing with family, friends and a few coaches. That determination quickly paid off.

his class and is active in speech, debate and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). He placed third at HOSA’s national conference last year and won state in his speech event.

“My sophomore year I ended up playing No. 1 singles and qualified for state,” said Irvin. “These past three years I have continued to play often and have improved my placements at the conference tournament from fifth my sophomore year to third and now to second place.”

“Because health and wellness are at the root of all other benefits and experiences, I believe working in health care has the greatest positive impact,” said Irvin. “As a physician, I believe the personal interactions will allow for me to make a tangible impact in the lives of real people who I interact with. As a health administrator, I hope to have the ability to play a positive role in the lives of many through large-scale administration.

Irvin’s determination is also evident when it comes to academics. He is at the top of

I believe this combination will allow me to have an individual and holistic impact on others.” Irvin began playing competitive sports when he was 5 and played soccer, a sport he continues to play today. “Balancing this sport with my busy academic and extracurricular schedule was already difficult, as I practice twice a week and have games on the weekend, so adding tennis to the mix was even more of a challenge,” said Irvin. “Many days, I would head straight to a club activity, then go directly to tennis lessons some 45 minutes away, and then to soccer, getting home late at night. My most difficult challenge was time management, but I got through it by being efficient and making the most of my time.”

Irvin shares that initially he enjoyed the individual aspect of tennis, where his skill was dictated purely by his own work and dedication. “This individual drive helped me to improve. But as I have progressed, I have really appreciated the high school team. Playing the sport allows me to meet new people of different social groups and grades,” said Irvin. Sports, especially tennis, have taught Irvin the importance of always trusting himself. “Tennis is an extremely mental sport, where unfounded doubts on your stroke or strategy can snowball into a really bad play. Over time, I have learned to trust my shots and my decisions on the court, which has slowly translated to off the court as well.”

HOLIDAY MARKET FESTIVITIES EXPLORE MORE THAN 200 VENDOR OFFERINGS AT PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL ONCE AGAIN AS IT HOSTS ITS ANNUAL WINTERFEST BY COLIN ANDERSON

T

hanksgiving weekend is a time for family and feasting. It’s a time to slow down our busy lives for a few hours and have some good old-fashioned conversation and a family dinner. Some families huddle around the day’s football games or Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade while others play cards, go for a walk or volunteer their time to help the less fortunate have a safe and warm holiday as well. After the plates are cleared, the lead up to Christmas officially begins. There will be Black Friday shoppers eager to get in line early for door-busting deals, but many have come to find a more relaxed and fun place to get in some early holiday shopping.

Ben Lieurence wanted to host a winter market that would be put on by students as a way of not only fundraising but teaching event planning and organizing as well. Now more than 25 years later, you will find a welloiled machine and more than 200 unique vendors at the annual weekend festival. “Winterfest is a fun event showcasing local artists, many with one-of-akind designs! Said Sandi Malich. “We have great food, music and a very festive atmosphere.” Malich has been the event organizer the past 25 years and is always looking forward to the big weekend. Working with ASB Advisor Danielle O’Leary, Winterfest is one of the primary focuses for the Peninsula High

Get in the Christmas spirit!

School Leadership class and introduces students into all aspects and phases of the sale with planning that begins far in advance. “Our students work with parking, decorating the building, vendor support (hospitality room) and advertising, to name a few,” said O’Leary. The show has become so popular that potential vendors are asked to submit photos of their items in the spring, and the list of accepted applications is usually out in the early part of summer. This is done so there are not several booths featuring similar offerings, and that shoppers will have access to a wide range of items. On the day of the sale, dozens of students can be seen helping out in all areas and behind the scenes. Some help to set up booths and direct vendors to their assigned areas. Others help unload vehicles and deliver goods inside. Student-run food and drink areas are found in the lunchroom, and various music groups will also be performing during the two-day event. When Winterfest concludes, students help take

unsold items back to vendor vehicles and also handle the teardown of tables and booths. Learning how to come up with a plan and execute it while dealing with any problems that come up is a valuable lesson for these high schoolers—true hands-on learning. While many vendors come back each year, there will always be new items to explore, and with so many booths, there is sure to be something for everyone on your list. “We usually have over 200 vendors, and many items are handmade items: Christmas ornaments, wood designs, food, metal art, handmade cards, one-of-a-kind items, to name a few,” said O’Leary. Once inside you’ll find vendors set up in the north and south gymnasiums, the hallway between them and the school’s commons. A variety of items and a showcase of local talent await you, and the festive atmosphere will put your right smack in the middle of the Christmas season.

“WE’RE NOT A CANINE DENTISTRY PRACTICE. HOWEVER, WE BELIEVE THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND IS INCREDIBLY HELPFUL TO CARE FOR OUR PATIENTS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE NOW THAT WE BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW PROPER DENTAL HEALTH INFLUENCES PHYSICAL HEALTH.”

D

ebra Enneking, D.D.S of Wollochet Dental Arts has been practicing dentistry for over 25 years. She is passionate about her patients and prides herself on making sure every patient she meets gets optimal, quality treatment of care.

Many patients ask her how she ended up in dentistry. She shares that at age 23, she was on a career path to become a biology teacher; she played goalie for a select soccer team when her life changed. During a game, Dr. Enneking was kicked in the face and broke her jaw. “After that, I spent a lot of time in the dentist chair.” While the reconstructive work made a positive difference, she never fully recovered. The result was a whole host of jaw pain and bite issues, now known as temporal mandibular disorder (T.M.D.). “My experience was an introduction to dentistry,” she recalls. Switching majors, Dr. Enneking attended UW Dental School and then became an associate for an area prosthodontics practice. They specialize in treating and handling challenging

dental and facial problems such as missing teeth and jaw reconstruction. “As the family dentist for this practice, I saw a lot of complicated cases. My personal experiences helped me understand the unique needs of my patients.” After a few years, Dr. Enneking wanted to establish her own practice to reflect her philosophies for patient care and education. She recalls that it was a complete accident when she began offering comfort therapy dogs for patients. “My first dog, whose name was Angel, developed severe separation anxiety,” Dr. Enneking says. “I was given several options for her treatment, none of which I felt comfortable with, so I decided to bring her to work with me. She lived up to her name, and over her lifetime Angel trained me on how to comfort patients in a dental setting.” Dr. Enneking now more fully understands the tremendous impact of comfort therapy animals. Patients often share how Angel calmed them and

how proper dental care influenced their overall health in many positive ways. Angel passed away in 2010, but her legacy has had a positive, ripple effect throughout Dr. Enneking’s dental practice. “Since then, my practice has had two other trained comfort therapy dogs, Esse and Enna,” she explains. At 9 years old, Enna is now ‘retired.’” The practice just welcomed a new member to the canine comfort therapy team—Enk. “Part of my work is to help patients understand why our comfort animals are here,” Dr. Enneking says. “We’re not a canine dentistry practice. However, we believe the human-animal bond is incredibly helpful to care for our patients. This is especially true now that we better understand how proper dental health influences physical health.” She adds: “I am here to care for patients of all ages and needs, which is why I chose family dentistry. Whether a bi-annual check-up for a 3-year-old or a 108-year-old patient, my philosophy is to help keep your whole mouth healthy for a lifetime because you are more than just a smile—it’s really about your overall health.”

BROUGHT TO YOU BY HOWARD MACKERT, MACKERT AUTOMOTIVE, LLC

If you drive a 1996 or newer vehicle, you’ve had the “Check Engine Light” pop up on your dash. The EPA mandated a standardized system for electronic controls referred to as OBDII (On Board Diagnostic, 2nd Gen). The codes are broken into categories: P for Powertrain (engine and transmission), B for Body control systems, C for Chassis controls and finally U for shared data communication issues.

We Specialize In:

Pruning, Tree Removal, Stump Grinding, View Enhancement Dead Wood Removal, Wind Sail Reduction

By mandate, if anything could cause the emissions to exceed 150 percent of the EPA limit, the light has to come on. What this means is that you can have a momentary glitch in a sensor that turns on the light. This is referred to as a “soft code” or “failure.” Once these codes are cleared they don’t come back. However, if they do, then we know it’s a “hard code” or actually failure versus a glitch.

The most common code is for an evaporative system leak caused by your gas cap being left loose after the last fuel fill. It takes several passed tests before the car will turn out the light. Most parts stores will read the code and turn out the light, but don’t buy any parts until it comes on again.

By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS STEELHEAD ARE RAINBOW TROUT THAT ARE BORN IN A RIVER, migrate out to the ocean from thousands of miles away, swim back up the same river, then back out to the ocean and return. They continue this process until they die from the exhaustion of spawning, are killed or caught.

Our first year trying to catch one, we scoured the Internet, read books, asked professionals and picked everyone’s brain we could. After three full days of casting out on the water, we went home empty handed. The second year, we did the same thing, thinking that the previous year’s experience would help us. If nothing else, we figured we’d paid our dues and would at least luck into a few. Nope.

Catching a steelhead can feel nearly impossible. They call them the fish of a thousand casts. They're not dumb. They can be found in thousands of miles of a river system and happen to run up these river systems during the coldest parts of winter. Thousands of fishermen try and catch them annually to no avail. Even the most seasoned angler will spend weeks on end trying to touch just one of them.

Over these first two seasons, we read stories of success, saw countless pictures on social media and went to seminars from people who proclaimed they had all the answers. Obviously it was possible. One day we realized that most of the pictures we were seeing and the stories we were hearing were from people who were fishing with professional guides. These guides usually run $250 to $300 a day, per person. Not a small amount

I am one of those anglers. With a handful of friends, who are just as impassioned and dedicated as I am, I head south every winter to try and catch one.

of money, according to our standards. We are an intelligent, hard-working group of guys who seem to find success through diligence and persistence. We shouldn’t have to pay someone to show us how to do things. Right? Then we came to our senses and realized how many hours, how many dollars in gas, bait, gear and lures, and how much mental energy had been spent to try and figure it out on our own. It was a depressing set of numbers. We realized we’d end up saving money, saving energy and being confident knowing that we were on the right path. We’d be able to ask all the questions we could think of and learn the ins and outs so if we did decide to go back out on our own, we’d be well prepared to do so. So we decided we’d do it. We’d shell out the money and jump on a boat with a pro. Sure enough, within a few hours of hiring a professional to help, I was shaking fins with the wild creature that had eluded me so many years before. We were elated. We even caught a handful more. What’s more is that we learned a ton and realized what we had done wrong in the past and what

we needed to do in the future. That experience was worth every dime (and more) that we paid. So what in the world does this have to do with fitness or nutrition? I watch people do this all the time when it comes to their health. They scour the Internet, read magazines, take advice from friends on social media and try all the latest fads in order to get what they seek. Yet, it often goes poorly and they end up starting that cycle all over again. In the end, all they’re doing is teaching themselves how to fail. They do this for years. They balk at the idea of hiring a coach because it’s too expensive. Yet they’ve never pondered the value of their time, their confidence in a plan or their feelings of exuberance when led by a professional with a proven track record down their path to success. Just as we learned with our fishing adventures, the value of an experienced guide who has been there, done that and seen it all is unparalleled, especially when you finally grasp that success in your own two hands.

COLDWEATHER SKINCARE Nurturing your skin during the chilly months BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN.

W

e hate to say it, but the days are getting shorter and winter is fast approaching. While living in a winter wonderland has endless benefits (we are surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, and there is no shortage of fun outdoor activities), the drop in temperature means cold, dry air with lower humidity levels outdoors and heat sources indoors, all of which leave our skin dry, itchy and parched. Now is a great time to develop a routine that will leave your skin hydrated and glowing from now until the first blooms of spring. The first step to healthy skin is a healthy diet, and winter is an important time of the year to increase your intake of healthy fats. Foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (walnuts, salmon, avocado and olive oil to name a few) help to restore moisture to dry skin and protect against free-radical damage and oxidation. It is also important to increase your water intake. Drinking half your bodyweight in ounces daily, as well as decreasing alcohol and caffeine consumption, will ensure you are well hydrated from the inside out. While enjoying the great outdoors, make sure to protect your skin with clothing and sunscreen. Yes, sunscreen. Even in the dead of winter our skin is vulnerable to the harsh UV rays of the sun, even more so at higher elevations where there is

less atmosphere to filter the harmful UV rays, and around snow due to the reflection of the sun’s rays. It is recommended to use a sunscreen with either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for the best protection and reapply every two to three hours. A day spent out in the cold leaves most of us longing for a quick warm up. While a long hot shower is what we crave, limiting your time in a warm (not hot) shower will help to maintain the natural oils on your skin. Your skincare routine should include a gentle exfoliating scrub that contains a mild glycolic or lactic acid, or a wet washcloth, to remove dead skin cells two to three times a week. This will allow your moisturizer to be more easily absorbed. While looking for a body moisturizer, choose a product that contains lanolin or ceramides to help your skin hold on to moisture. A great ingredient to hydrate your face without clogging your pores is hyaluronic acid and, as a bonus, will help to plump the skin for a more youthful appearance. Oils, such as squalene and lapis, are also great choices for hydrating your face. Dry skin doesn’t have to be something you suffer with throughout the fall and winter season. A healthy diet, protecting your skin and nurturing it with the correct skincare products will keep your skin healthy and glowing all year long. Make dry and itchy skin a thing of the past.

ACCESSORIZING YOUR HEARING EXPERIENCE IMPROVING YOUR COMMUNICATION ABILITIES

BY MARILYN LOY EVERY, M.S., CCC-A HEAR FOR LIFE AUDIOLOGY

I

magine for a moment that you have a hearing loss and wear hearing devices to augment your hearing. Now imagine that there could be accessories that would enhance your hearing experience and ultimately expand your quality of life. Your dream can come true! Accessories to optimize your hearing experience are one of the best-kept secrets in the world of hearing technology. As hearing health-care providers, we indeed consider it our responsibility to educate our patients relative to accessory options and related benefits that would significantly improve their communication abilities. Most individuals with hearing loss typically have the TV volume too loud for the comfort of companions and family members. Yet, they can be frustrated because they cannot understand what is being said on TV. If this is your experience or that of someone you live with, a TV streaming device may be exactly what is needed! Unlike devices seen advertised on TV that increase only volume but does not accommodate the hearing loss specifically, a TV “streamer” works in tandem with the hearing-device technology. The streaming device sends the digital sound from the TV to the hearing devices, which then redigitizes the TV sound based on the wearer’s specific hearing loss. The benefit to the wearer is that they are able to better understand and more fully enjoy their TV watching experience. Best of all, the TV volume can be turned completely off or kept at a comfortable level for others.

Possibly you or someone you live with struggles with basic telephone conversations. Most of us do not stop to realize that when one is engaged in conversation, there are actually helpful forms of input—visual and both right and left ear hearing. When one picks up a telephone, they lose the visual as well as one ear inputs. When utilizing a “made-forhearing-device” technology like a Phone Dex, the Phone Dex streams the conversation to both ears, thus increasing comprehension and understanding. I recall a 72-year-old patient coming into my office for a follow up visit; he was brought to tears as he shared his story. He

Accessories to optimize your hearing experience are one of the best-kept secrets in the world of hearing technology. stated, “Last night was the first time in three years that I have actually had a conversation with my daughter on the telephone and did not have to pretend that I understood what she was saying.” Cell phone experience can also be greatly enhanced through the use of hearing devices. Current technology allows cell phones to stream directly to an iPhone. Older hearing devices or those that use an android cell phone can use a streaming device such as a Com-Dex. The Com-Dex allows a hands-free cell-phone experience while the conversation streams to both ears and excludes outside sounds. It is always exciting and gratifying when watching the face of a patient light up when observing them using their hearing devices with their cell phone for the first time. In addition to the above, there are other accessories that one might consider. After reading this article, if you believe your hearing device experience could be enhanced by the use of an accessory, schedule an appointment with your audiologist to discuss your options.

BOOSTING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM It’s nearing that time of year again for colds, viruses and flu season BY DARCIE MILLER

T

he immune system consists of cells, protein, fluids, organs and tissue. The combination of all of these makes up the immune system to help protect your body from illness. There are the obvious things we can do to help minimize the spread of germs and also catching those germs. We all know about washing our hands, covering our coughs and staying home when you are sick—this step is one many may ignore because they treat their symptoms with cold and flu medications and will go to work, school or run errands before they are well. This puts an even greater strain on your immune system and may actually lengthen the duration of your illness, not to mention spreading those same germs to others. Here are some other tips for boosting your immune system: Get plenty of rest and eat nutritious meals so your body gets the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs to remain in a healthy state. Try to eliminate stimulants such as coffee, black tea, alcohol and smoking; these are also hard on your immune system. And try to lower your stress level. When your body is stressed, it taxes all of your body’s systems including your immune system. There are numerous way to relax and destress. Here are a few you may not be aware of:

Reflexology - There are reflex points in your feet, hands and ears which correspond to all of your body’s systems—including the immune system. A trained and licensed reflexologist will work all of your systems since they all support one another. This can help relax your whole body and bring all of your systems into balance creating a state of homeostasis where the body can begin to heal itself. The reflexologist may spend a little extra time reflexing specific reflex points to help boost your immune system. Reiki - Reiki is a form of energy healing. A Reiki practitioner will place their hands just over or above your body to help facilitate relaxation, which can help you release any stored-up negative energy and toxins.

Sound Healing - Our bodies are approximately 70 percent water and 30 percent mineral. Our cells respond to the vibrations of sound. And when we are stressed and or unwell, our cells become out of sync. Vibrations from crystal and Tibetan bowls have been proven to help balance and calm the body bringing it into a state of homeostasis, where it can begin to heal itself. Meditation - Meditation can bring about deep relaxation and calm. Along with proper rest, nutrition and exercise, receiving reflexology, reiki or meditating on a regular basis can help keep your body in optimum health.

6 Tips for Winning Over Picky Toddlers BY JOHN APOSTOL, MD, FAAP, PEDIATRICS NORTHWEST, P.S.

etting young children to eat a balanced, healthy diet can be a definite challenge. But it’s important to remember that as you help your child learn healthy eating habits for life, the foundation of healthy eating outweighs the challenges by far. Nonetheless, it can still be a difficult phase, so here are some ways to ease you through this trying season. 1. Minimize meal time distractions. Turn off the television, clear toys from the dining table and implement a "no phone at the table" rule to help everyone focus on the family conservation and their food. 2. Set a good example. Eat together as a family as often as possible and eat a variety of healthy foods yourself. You are your child's best role model; let them see you enjoying healthy foods and they will follow. 3. Don't force your child to clean their plate.

Our board-certified pediatric and adult specialty physicians specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of: allergies/hay fever asthma/respiratory disorders food allergies eczema/hives sinus problems immune disorders chronic cough sleep disorders sleep disturbances

Instead, avoid the power struggle by encouraging them to try at least two bites of everything on their plate. 4. Think about how you brand it. Food becomes more approachable with a fun name attached to it. Think "pinwheel

sandwiches" rather than turkey and cheese rolled up in a tortilla, "pink fish" rather than salmon or "miniature trees" rather than broccoli. 5. Get your child involved. Encourage them to help you shop for healthy food at the grocery store, then let them help wash and prepare the fruits and vegetables. Being a part of the process makes kids more interested in the end result on their plate. 6. Let your child have a say by giving them choices with limited options. Questions like "Milk or water with dinner?" "Purple cup or green cup?" "Superhero plate or Mickey Mouse plate?" keep your child feeling like their input matters while also keeping the conversation focused.

It’s important to remember that as you help your child learn healthy eating habits for life, the foundation of healthy eating outweighs the challenges by far.

Too Busy to Breathe? TAKE BACK THE GIFT OF TIME BY JENNIFER WIGGLESWORTH

T

ime is given to us all equally. Why, then, do we seem to “run out of it”? Are our days getting shorter or are these lists (mental or physical) getting longer? It seems that in this day and age, no one has time to do the things they want to do, or even need to do, because there is no time to do it. Some people become so obsessed with doing that they even forget to breathe. And, to what end? To say they did “all of that”? What is this obsession with time, or lack thereof? More importantly, how can one get it back? It’s time to take back the gift of time and use it toward purposeful things. Instead of “getting things done,” let’s do things we desire or need to do—like breathe. Rather than losing time unwillingly, what would happen if one decides to be in charge of one’s time? That’s right. It sounds inconceivable to be in charge of our time these days but with a slight change of mind a possible concept. Becoming a slave to time by running after everything that happens to jump on the to-do list, defeats the purpose of having the gift of time in the first place. Lists are not what life is about. Life is about living, dreaming and breathing. Instead of running to the next thing on the list, imagine if you closed your eyes and focused on your breathing. Inhale. Exhale. Now, do it again and breathe deeper. It only takes a few seconds,

but the moments taken to do some of the smallest things—like breathing—create some of the most enlightened life changes or memories. Intention in action allows for a life lived more purposefully. Lists can be safe and comfortable, but choice in desire and slowing things down can be purposeful and life-changing. Remember, before those overwhelming feelings begin to sneak in, focus. Living more intentionally doesn’t need to start with much more than just a breath. With intention comes reflection. By beginning with small changes like breathing, one can begin to transfer the to-do list into an intentional life worth living. Switching the list out for healthy activities like practicing barre, going on a hike, evening stretches, having coffee with friends, watching a funny movie or hosting a family dinner are all positive activities led with intention. Of course everyone’s idea of desirable activities will vary, the point remains within driving one’s life with simplistic acts of intention rather than remaining within a list of things to do. Time is a precious commodity that should never be taken for granted. In this world of busy, taking time to slow down and enjoy the moments and things that delights oneself is what it’s all about. Beginning with breathing, it’s time to take back your life.

trange as it seems, your body can actually attack itself. Well, your body doesn’t go crazy with a knife and start attacking in that manner, however, part of your body can. That part is the immune system. When the immune system goes haywire, goes on some crazy metabolic rampage and turns a supposedly healthy functioning immune system into a victim, so to speak, we call it an autoimmune disorder.

When

Your Body

An autoimmune disorder could be likened to the body becoming allergic to its own parts, its own tissues. It’s like it suddenly has amnesia and forgets about what its own tissue is and what an enemy is.

Attacks Itself

Autoimmune disorders are so abundant that a vast number of our population has one of the many forms. In my research, I discovered 174 different autoimmune disorders. Fortyeight were classified as research-conclusive, whereas the rest were considered “suspect.” Autoimmune disorders range from psoriasis to rheumatoid arthritis, to lupus, autoimmune thyroid disease, blood disorders and even certain cancers.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

The question that lingers in my mind is, “Why?” Why would the immune system mistake healthy tissue as an enemy? The body is always striving for normalcy. The makeup is specifically to protect itself. So why would it become confused, erratic and go on the “fritz”?

BY HOLLY A. CARLING, O.M.D., L.AC., PH.D

We can contribute to autoimmune disease by several lifestyle choices. We don’t choose to have a system in disarray, but we make choices that set the stage for it to happen. What are those choices? Our diet, for one. Hydrogenated and other trans-fats interfere with immune function, while healthy fats (the ones we were previously advised to avoid) support healthy immune function. Sugar suppresses normal immune behavior, as does alcohol (a refined sugar). Good hormonal health is a prerequisite for good immune health. But if our life is subject to stress, poor diet, inadequate sleep, environmental toxins and other factors, we suffer from hormonal imbalances that span many functions in the body. Hormones control hundreds of metabolic activities that are intricately connected to the forces mentioned above and play a role in the immune system. There are many substances that have an impact on immune health. Vitamins A, C and D are particularly critical to healthy immune fitness. Most people, when they consume those vitamins, consume the chemical versions, which not only are not as effective in supporting immune strength but can contribute to its breakdown. Certain medications have been shown to set the stage for immune dysfunction as well. Life-stress is also an immunosuppressant. We all have stress, but if we fall short of the elements needed to support us during stressful times, we will fall victim to this crazed immune mechanism. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to support healthy immune function. Acupuncture, herbs, good nutrition and resolution of bodily burdens that underscore healthy immune function are all excellent choices for immune restoration. FEATURE STORY

Painful Memories Time does not heal wounds to the soul BY DAN AZNOFF

F

ifty years ago, I was an acne-faced teenager desperately trying to cling to the tail of the political unrest that had swept our nation.

While most of my junior high classmates spent their afterschool hours on ball fields, my days were filled with creating memorable catch phrases that could be painted on poster boards that I prepared for the next rally against social injustice or the bloody war in Vietnam. My lunch hours were filled with gatherings of like-minded young people who would take turns standing on tables outside the cafeteria delivering passionate speeches on the inequalities in our society. For a would-be student radical, the 1968 presidential elections were better than the World Series. The local elections in my community in Southern California provided my first opportunity to put words into action. My pockets were stuffed with leaflets as well as potholders and other promotional materials distributed by the various candidates. Election Day was spent standing on the median of a local highway waving a sign to encourage motorists to vote for my preferred candidate for state assembly. When the polls closed, volunteers gathered at the campaign office around the corner from my home to wait for the early returns. My passion was fueled in large part by the candidacy of Bobby Kennedy, who was engaged in a tight race for the Democratic presidential nomination against Sen. Eugene McCarthy. The contest for delegates had tightened the week earlier when the lawmaker from Minnesota had bested Kennedy in the Oregon primary. Kennedy was perceived by many as the only candidate who could unite the party (and the country) during a tempestuous time of unrest. Both senators had taken a strong stance against the war in the uphill contest against Vice President Hubert Humphrey. The VP had assumed the role of presumptive Democratic nominee when President Lyndon Johnson unexpectedly withdrew from the race at the end of March after

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

he had been upstaged by McCarthy in the New Hampshire primary. The crowd at the assemblyman’s campaign office was jubilant with the early returns that indicated their efforts had resulted in victory for their candidate. Many of those in the crowded office wanted to move the celebration from the suburban campaign headquarters to Downtown Los Angeles to join the festivities at the Kennedy campaign headquarters. The prospect of being a part of the Kennedy victory celebration at the Ambassador Hotel inspired me to deceive my parents about where I would be and to stay out past my curfew. We stuffed ourselves into a half-dozen cars for the short ride downtown. The throngs of people in the Embassy Ballroom at The Ambassador grew more enthusiastic as Kennedy’s lead in early returns indicated a much-needed victory en route to the nominating convention in Chicago. As an observer of history, I found myself positioned near a side door as victory grew near. My emotions were a mix of excitement coupled with guilt for being so far from home on a school night and for deceiving my parents. Just after midnight, almost without warning, I was shoved out of my safe haven near a side door by a surge of photographers and reporters.

FEATURE STORY A few steps behind the media were members of Kennedy’s staff, looking confident and mildly disheveled. Bobby walked into the room behind them, surrounded by an elite combination of celebrities and famous athletes. The candidate was wearing a freshly pressed suit over a crisp white shirt. He stopped to shake hands with as many people as he could reach through the barrier of humanity that had engulfed him. He stopped in front of me. With a sweep of one hand, he brushed the hair away from his face long enough to lean down and look straight into my eyes. I uttered some innocuous comment before Bobby asked me my name. “Danny, sir.” The noise was deafening, but I could hear the sincerity in his reply. “Well Danny, I hope I can count on your vote in November.” I did not want to tell him that I was still eight years away from being 21 and legally able to vote. In an instant, he was gone, headed toward the podium where he would claim victory in the winner-take-all California primary. He held up his fingers to symbolize V for victory and pledged to win the nomination at the convention in Chicago. The infamous gunshots from the kitchen a few moments later were as clear as if they had been fired in an empty room. A tight corridor

Robert Kennedy’s assassination on June 5, 1968, in a Los Angeles hotel came just months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and less than five years after the assassination of Robert’s brother, President John F. Kennedy. Although he died the day after his shooting at the young age of 42, the young politician spent nearly half of his life in public service making a significant impact on American politics. • Robert Kennedy was the chief counsel of the Senate Labor Rackets Committee from 1957 to 1959 where he challenged Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa over the corrupt practices of the union. • Robert Kennedy served as the 64th United States attorney general from January of 1961 to September of 1964, serving under his brother, John F. Kennedy, until the president’s assassination in November of 1963. Bobby stayed on as attorney general until he resigned 10 months following President Kennedy’s death. • Following his brother’s death, Robert Kennedy was elected senator of New York, where he continued his mission to advocate for the poor and for human rights. He was known for his opposition to racial discrimination and the escalation of the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. • According to the Washington Post, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who lost his father when he was 14 years old, visited with Sirhan B. Sirhan, the man convicted of killing his father, earlier this year at a correctional facility in California. After his visit, Robert Kennedy, Jr. said he believes there was a second gunman and that it was not Sirhan who killed his father.

opened in the sea of bodies that gave me a glimpse of Rosey Grier as he struggled to pry the gun away from the shooter. The gunman continued to pull the trigger after he had fired all six rounds from his .22 caliber handgun. The rest of the evening was a blur of sirens and news cameras. We made the 20-minute drive home in silence. My mind was filled with the horrific images I had witnessed, but I went to bed that night without admitting to my parents where I had been. I avoided any conversation with classmates until the next afternoon when our teachers informed us that Kennedy had died from his wounds.

I cried more that night than when my mother died eight years later. The man who had the ability to lead the nation out of the desperate times that began five years earlier when President Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas was gone. The future looked bleak without a man to lead us out of the darkness. Bobby was shot by Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian who believed killing the next president would prevent the sale of American jets to Israel. The site of the violence has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. The Ambassador Hotel fell into disrepair and has been replaced by a community of public schools named to honor the fallen senator dedicated to the ideals he championed.

The nation has not. The ideals of social justice Kennedy symbolized a half-century ago continue to be out of reach for a nation in search of its soul. That night changed my life forever. Being a witness to history inspired me to become a journalist who could provide objective information on the people responsible for the changes in our society. Bobby has been a part of my life every day for the past 50 years. I continue to be inspired by the ideals he advocated and mourn for the loss of where we could be as a nation if he had lived to fulfill his vision of equality.

Make a Local Impact All Year Shopping locally has domino effect in the community BY PATTY HUTCHENS

I

t is the time of year when we start making our lists. What gift should we purchase for those special people in our lives this holiday season? After all, we want something that will be different from the rest; something that truly reflects the love we have for someone. This year, while making those lists, think about how you can also influence your local economy. And then consider making it a habit not just during the holiday season but year round. There are a few campaigns that have already been encouraging people to do so, and this is the story behind an impact of two of those. The 3/50 Project One such way to boost the local economy is by taking part in the 3/50 Project whose mission is “saving the brick and mortars the nation is built upon.” The concept of the 3/50 Project is simple: Pick three. Spend 50. Save your local economy. Organizers encourage people to choose three independently owned businesses that they know they would miss if they were to suddenly close down. Commit to spending $50 each month at one of these stores, whether it is a local health food store, gift shop,

restaurant, salon or clothing store, and locals will be doing their part to make a significant impact on their local economy. According to those behind the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the local community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. On the contrary, if you spend your money at a “big box” store, only $43 stays local. And for online spending, well, it’s a big zero. Minneapolis resident Cindy Baxter is the driving force behind the 3/50 Project. She is the former owner of a successful retail store and is now a retail consultant and professional speaker with a mission to strengthen independent brick-and-mortar businesses. Baxter shares that she feels an obligation to pay forward the knowledge and expertise she has gained throughout the years. With a simple blog post back in 2009, following a week of news reports focusing on how consumer spending drives the economy, Baxter’s post suggesting the principles behind the 3/50 Project propelled people into action. Only a week later, she was handing out free flyers to businesses, and by the end of that month she had launched her website, The350Project.net. Today, businesses can register and receive free marketing tools from the 3/50 Project at no cost. If you are a local business owner,

go ahead and check it out. You will be surprised at the impact such a simple concept can have! Small Business Saturday

It was not too long ago when our economy was struggling and in the midst of a recession. For small businesses, that struggle was especially difficult. American Express sought to find a way they could help support those locally owned businesses that do so much to keep the local economy strong, funneling the money spent back into the communities they serve. It was in 2010 when American Express launched Small Business Saturday. On one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, American Express’s campaign was aimed at bringing more holiday shopping to small businesses around the country. It was only one year later when the Senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting Small Business Saturday, and by 2012, all 50 states were participating. Now, eight years later, the campaign is going strong as more and more businesses are taking part in the quest, displaying Small Business Saturday signs in their windows and bringing people in who may not normally shop there. A report commissioned by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Businesses reports that in 2017 an estimated 108 million

As the holiday season approaches, think small, think local and feel good about the fact your shopping experience is helping your hometown. consumers shopped or dined at local independently owned businesses on Small Business Saturday. That number translates into approximately 43 percent of all Americans. And while we often think of Small Business Saturday and shopping local as being benefits to the business owner, the benefits to consumers are also significant. When one chooses to shop in his or her locally owned stores, they are not only saving themselves time by not traveling to other destinations, but they likely are also saving money. Traveling out of town for one’s shopping needs requires the cost of gas, time away from home or work and, depending upon where you go, could also mean a higher sales tax. If you are an Internet shopper, you may save time but not always money. After all, those shipping costs can quickly add up. And you may not realize it but making a conscious effort to shop locally as much as possible is also a benefit to friends and neighbors. Small business owners are known for their contributions to the many nonprofit agencies that in turn help our community members. In fact, statistics show those locally owned and operated stores are two-anda-half times more likely to donate to nonprofit agencies than the large chain stores.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Small business owners are the ones who take the money they earn and reinvest it into their community with their own purchases of goods and services. Can the same be said for the big box stores? By shopping at locally owned stores you are not only helping to stimulate the local economy, but you may likely be helping other people in the community who rely upon several of our nonprofits during the down times in their lives. As the holiday season approaches, think small, think local and feel good about the fact your shopping experience is helping your hometown. And while you are at it, maybe make a New Year’s resolution to continue the practice all year long.

CONQUERING ONLINE

BY CHEF TROY LOUIS CHANDLER

How you can become successful BY COLIN ANDERSON

I

n today’s world, anything you need can be sent to you without ever leaving your couch. A myriad of online shopping options are out there from behemoths like Amazon and Ebay to specialty sites for very specific products. In many cities, the weekly grocery trip has changed completely. Shoppers can purchase everything from their phone or computer and it will be ready to pick up when they arrive at the store. In some cases groceries are even delivered. Removing the brick and mortar from a business can save thousands in associated costs, and those who want to turn their hobby into part- or full-time income have places to push their goods as well. Like in any market, the competition is fierce amongst online retailers big and small, and getting your products to the front of search results is no simple task. There are, however, several sites and techniques for those who are looking to make a small splash in this multi-billion dollar industry. Social Media Marketing Setting up a business-specific set of social media pages is vital to any business looking for maximum reach. Channels like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter are all free to set up, and for many consumers these are the platforms in which they are influenced on fashion trends, news and upcoming events.

With these platforms you can post stories or content about your product, show photos of the piece from concept to finished product, and interact with current or potential customers. A jewelry designer might wish to hold a Twitter chat or livestream so followers can watch an item being made and speak directly to the artisan who is making it. Facebook allows you to open your own ‘Shop’ directly on its platform so followers can purchase your item while on the popular social media site. Placing ads on Facebook is also very affordable, and with its enormous database of users, you control who your message gets to. If your target is 30- to 40-year-old married women without kids and within 30 miles of your location, you can set the filters and choose how much you want to spend. Easy -to-read charts show you how many impressions your ad received and allow you to easily calculate your cost per lead or cost per sale. High-Quality Images

Channels like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter are all free to set up, and for many consumers these are the platforms in which they are influenced on fashion trends, news and upcoming events.

While phones have come a long way, simply snapping a quick pic of your product and putting it online isn’t always the best method. Hiring a professional to shoot multiple views and angles will ensure better quality images in your online store. Professionals know proper lighting and the ins and outs of photo-editing software such as Photoshop. Consumers are becoming more and more visual, and the better your images the better response you will receive. If your startup doesn’t have the capital for a professional, there are some budget solutions as well. If your items are small like handmade crafts or jewelry, table-top sized photo studios are available. In many cases these bright white squares are already lit, but in some, the lighting is placed outside of the device. Larger sizes are available for those looking to model clothes or furniture. Price and quality vary greatly from basic models around $50 to larger higher-end studios reaching into the thousands.

Know the Charges If you go with a well-established online marketplace like Etsy or Houzz, make sure you are aware of the costs to list your items and the commission that is paid when your item does sell. For example, Etsy charges 20 cents for each listing. When the item sells, the company takes a 5-percent commission and also charges a 3-percent payment processing fee to complete the order. Knowing what it costs to make a sale will help you price your items correctly. There are smaller sites that charge smaller fees and commissions but you are unlikely to receive the support, fraud protections and shipping options that the larger platforms offer. Be Creative and Mix it Up When you choose the platform that you feel is right for your product, do all that you can to learn everything about the site. These companies also make money off your product, so it is their goal for you to succeed. Each offers stories of users’ success and failures and provide step-by-step instructions on creating the right attentiongrabbing listings. Many have built-in communities which allow you to chat and brainstorm with other users or speak with company employees about issues you are having. If your items aren’t selling, don’t be afraid to mix things up. When listing an item, think about what descriptions and categories you want to utilize. There are a lot of ‘vintage chairs’ for sale, so look at narrowing down the search parameters. It can be tricky, but don’t be afraid to continually tweak your listings until you find the best results and response. Ecommerce is only continuing to grow, and whether you’re looking to have your product take over the globe or just sell a few pieces each year, there is a platform that will get your item exposure to those looking to buy it. Like any other business, have a plan, budget and goals when starting your online business—and be the boss!

Shopping on a budget TIPS AND TRICKS TO SAVING OVER THE HOLIDAYS BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

Set a budget. Before you leave the house for an afternoon of spirited holiday shopping, you must first set a firm budget—and stick to it! This is a time of year that should be joyful. Why ruin that feeling by ending the year with unnecessary debt? Figure out what you can reasonably afford and go from there. Allot an amount to each person you’ll be shopping for (your budget will help determine how many you are able to include on your personal “nice list”) and … you’re off!

A LIST IS A MUST. There’s no greater joy than seeing the smiles on your loved ones’ faces Christmas morning, but note, it is not imperative to shop for every family member or friend. Before you get a start on your holiday shopping, and taking into consideration your budget, make a list of family and friends and what you want to buy them. By sticking to a list of gift items you intend to purchase, it will dissuade you from buying more than you intend to. Remember, it’s the thought of the gift that counts—not the number of gifts. Stick to your guns, and your list, and you’ll leave the store with a smile.

IGNORE SALE SIGNS. Those sale signs and the tempting buy one, get one can send you on a shopping spree of no return—and a less than happy bank statement. We know, it can be difficult not to take a bite of one of the many sales happening throughout the holiday season. Yes, sales are great if it’s an item you had already planned on purchasing, but if it’s not, no matter how much you’re saving, you’re still spending. This is a reminder, again, to stick to that list and budget.

USE CASH, NOT CARDS. If you limit the amount of money you plan on spending, it makes it that much easier to avoid overspending! Entering a shop with cash in hand more easily allows you to keep track of how much you are spending while you’re shopping, and you won’t be surprised when you get to the checkout line to discover you’ve overblown your budget. And hey, if you finish the day off with a few extra bucks, treat yourself to a warm beverage. You’ve earned it!

Don’t procrastinate. It’s never too early to get a start on your holiday shopping. If you spread out the gift shopping over several months—yup, think summertime— you will avoid those last-minute shopping sprees where you’re more than likely to blow your budget. Allocating a set amount of money each paycheck to be used for your holiday shopping will help you get ahead of the game—and by taking this advice, it’s possible to have all of the gifts purchased, and wrapped, before Thanksgiving!

Get crafty. Especially for those with large families, too many friends to count on one hand and blessed with those kind neighbors you just have to include on your nice list, this is the time to do it yourself and stop in at your favorite crafts store. From buying ornaments in bulk and personalizing each one for those special people in your life to framing a family photo and decorating the frame to suit the style and taste of the lucky recipient, this is a great—and inexpensive—way to spread holiday cheer to all of those you cherish.

Donate to charity. Of course, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a beautifully wrapped gift under the Christmas tree with our name written on the tag. What could it be? But, what if, instead of a gift you can hold in your hands, you receive a gift that makes its home in your heart. Making a financial donation to a local charity in a friend or family member’s name is a great way of spreading holiday cheer to others who may be less fortunate. Find out what causes are important to them, make a donation and send them a Christmas card sharing the news and what organization you contributed

TRAVEL & LEISURE

A late Fall Getaway to the Oregon Coast Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers and Art Glass make a great theme for your trip STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

L

ate fall is a wonderful time of the year to visit the Oregon Coast. The summer crowds are long gone and the area settles into a slower pace. Midway down the coast, Lincoln City makes a good centrally located base for all the seaside has to offer. When planning a getaway, it’s fun to design a trip around a theme. When visiting Lincoln City, it has to be the renowned Finders Keepers project and art glass. Finders Keepers Lincoln City’s Float Fairies are busy this time of year as they scurry to hide a super drop of the beautiful glass floats the town is well-known for before the Thanksgiving Holiday week. The Float Fairies are volunteers who pass a screening process, are sworn to secrecy and much like a superhero they remain anonymous. Each year they hide more than 3,000 floats on seven miles of beach from Roads End on the north to Siletz Bay on the south as part of Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers program. During the holiday week from November 22 through 25, they will hide an extra 50 floats. Finders Keepers began as a way to mark the millennium. A local artist recommended the idea of hiding the glass floats, and Lincoln City sponsored the project. The first season took place in 1999-2000 and was hugely popular. The Finders Keepers project is a perfect mix of history, art and the outdoors. Searching for glass fishing floats has long been a popular pastime on the Oregon Coast when floats can wash ashore from as far as Japan. Art glass is a great medium for capturing the beauty of the area. For the 2018 season, eight different art studios make the brightly colored glass floats, and each are signed and numbered. Add in a nice stroll on the beach and you have a perfect activity. Learn about the history of the area at the North Lincoln County Historical Society Museum. The museum is in the midst of the Historic Taft District of Lincoln City. After visiting the museum, the district is an interesting area to explore with shops, restaurants

and art glass. Your stop at the museum is to view the spectacular collection of Japanese fishing floats donated by Jim Watson and Nick Simpson. The glass floats were used to hold up fishing nets and range in size from a few inches to 2 feet in diameter. There are many unique examples of floats made in Japan for their fishing industry. Somehow they made their way all the way to the Oregon Coast by wave and ocean currents. Many an Oregon native has combed the coast hoping to find one of these treasures. Nearby is the Lincoln City Glass Center. Stop by to just watch the talented artists working with the challenging molten glass or try your hand at glass blowing yourself and make your own glass float. The whole process is very interesting and even children can participate (height restrictions). The center also has a shop where the artists have exercised their creativity with a large variety of art glass. Insider Tips: Make a reservation and know that glass art takes 24 hours to cool down so allow time to create your piece and pick it up the next day. The center can also ship your piece to you. The SW 51st Street Beach Access is nearby and a great place to start your search for a glass float. There are some basic rules when you embark on your hunt for art glass. Floats are hidden above the high tide line and below the beach embankment. Float fairies hide the glass globes every day rain or shine, and they are placed only during daylight hours throughout the day, not just all at once. If you are lucky enough to find a float, call

Begin your Christmas shopping at the Lincoln City Outlets or some of the many unique stores and shops that are along Highway 101. Make sure to stop at the Christmas Cottage, which has been a visitor favorite for 45 years. The store carries over 25,000 ornaments from around the world. The Lincoln City Culinary Center offers a variety of classes during the month of November. Relax and watch a demonstration class while learning about local foods or take a hands-on class. The center also offers custom classes. With enough notice they can arrange a class for you and your family. This is a good experience for extended family groups, a girls’ trip or a get together with your friends. Chef Donna Riani is tons of fun, and she knows how to find local experts for interesting culinary experiences. Siletz Bay is the place to crab, clam and fish. The bay is much calmer than the ocean, and everyone will enjoy the many sea birds and sea lions that frequent the area. Bill Paterek is a local resident expert. and although he

Where to Stay Lincoln City has a variety of Mom-and-Pop beachfront hotels, fancy resorts and chain hotels with many options to choose from and most are on the beach, near the beach or a short walk to the beach. The Chinook Winds Casino Resort is an out-of-the-box choice for a family stay, but it is a surprising family friendly option. Non-smoking rooms are available, and the suite building is located well away from the main casino building and is ocean front. The junior suites are equipped with an oceanfront balcony, fireplace, microwave and refrigerator, and have plenty of room for a family stay. There are stunning sunset views of the Pacific Ocean from the room’s spacious balcony, and a long stretch of beach provides miles of peaceful walking. Where To Eat Lincoln City’s dining scene is very eclectic. I love off-season because you find where the locals eat. Don’t miss breakfast at Vivian’s Restaurant and Bob’s Barbeque (but locals just call it Vivian’s). This hidden gem is tucked on a side street just past the “D” River Bridge. Enjoy your breakfast with views of the world’s shortest river. The Wild Flower Grill cooks made-toorder, and the food is well worth the wait. I am still thinking about the delicious white chocolate and huckleberry cheesecake. If you like seafood you will want to have dinner at Kyllo’s Seafood and Grill. Delectable dishes are made with fresh locally sourced seafood and grass-fed beef. The crab-stuffed halibut is a culinary masterpiece of halibut stuffed with Dungeness crab and ricotta, topped with a garlic sauce and garnished with wild large gulf shrimp. Plan ahead; they don’t take reservations, and you may have to wait—but oh so worth it. The Chinook Winds Casino’s premier restaurant is the Rogue River Steakhouse located at the top of the casino with 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. Their bone-in ribeye steak is one of the best I’ve ever eaten. The newly remodeled eatery definitely provides an upscale dining experience. The Oregon Coast is just what you need to relax and rejuvenate before the holiday season, and you can’t go wrong making Lincoln City your base.

EGGPLANT PARMESAN Courtesy of Millville Pizza Co. This is a really simple (and quick) way to make a delicious eggplant parmesan. From frying the eggplant to the final bake will take approximately 45 minutes. The key to this recipe is the quantity of each ingredient used. Not too much or else the eggplant parmesan becomes too moist. This meal pairs well with a garlic fettuccine, homemade garlic bread, basically anything with garlic!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: 3411 Harborview Dr. Gig Harbor, WA | 253.514.8626 MillvillePizzaCo.com

Recipe serves 6-8 people.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1 loaf day-old bread 2 medium/fat eggplants 4 eggs 2 cups + 3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 8 oz. whole peeled tomatoes (canned) ½ tsp. salt 4 cloves garlic 1 shallot, finely diced ½ cup herb mix (basil, rosemary, thyme) 5 cups mozzarella Parmesan, shredded to taste

METHOD • Cut day-old bread into small chunks. Mix bread chunks with 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt. Set in preheated 350°F oven. Mix every 5 minutes until all sides are golden brown and crisp. (An easier way is to buy bread crumbs from any store). Chop dried bread chunks in Cuisinart or blender until powdery. Thanksgiving Trot GET YOUR METABOLISM FIRED UP!

BY COLIN ANDERSON

I

f thoughts of guilt enter your mind before gorging on your annual Thanksgiving meal, you can eliminate at least some of that guilt by starting your day off with a fun bit of exercise. The first Gig Harbor Turkey Trot back in 2003 only drew about 15 people. The idea came from local chiropractor Tim Holmes when his son challenged him to complete a marathon. Dr. Holmes invited clients, and from the few dozen runners the first year the event has grown to a family favorite with thousands of annual participants. Registration is now open for both the 5k and 10k run that begin at 8am Thanksgiving morning. Early registration is encouraged, is less expensive and makes life easier on volunteers at the event. Entrants will receive a T-shirt during packet pickup, which runs from 1 to 5pm at St. Anthony’s Hospital on Wednesday, November 21. Keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit, all in attendance are encouraged to bring two cans

of food that will be donated to the FISH Food Bank. Proceeds from the event will also go to the Bischoff Food Bank, Food Backpacks for Kids and fund scholarships for local high school students. The starting line is conveniently located downtown on Judson Street, and both courses follow the waterfront. Additional shirts will be available for purchase on race day, and spectators are encouraged to cheer on the runners and make a donation themselves. To register online and for additional race day information, visit GigHarborTurkeyTrot.com. Thanksgiving is a day filled with food and celebration amongst family and friends. Start your day off right with a family fun run while helping feed those most in need during the holiday season. As a bonus, you won’t feel quite as guilty going for that second piece of pie.
