“As a first-home buyer, I was so intimidated by the process, as you probably are if you are reading this. I’m here to tell you not to worry. Get in touch with Northwest Mortgage Services. Our loan officer, Abel Hernandez, was fantastic. He made sure my wife and I were informed every step of the way, and was very responsive to my calls and questions. I was seeking a VA Loan, so I had a few extra concerns on requirements and things to consider, but Abel and his team are extremely experienced in this aspect as well. The bottom line is they care about what they do, and who they are doing it for. The only thing I would have done differently is calling them sooner.” - James Santos

Fall Decorating Drama for 2021 KEEP IT LIGHT AND SIMPLE By Deann Hammer, Broadway Design
A
s the light turns golden outdoors and the leaves follow, it is the time of year to begin to look inward into our homes and prepare for comfort during the cooler months ahead.
I like to stuff a pomegranate or two into my arrangements for color (wire them in on a stick), and let them dry in the arrangement until Christmas when I change themes.
Fall decorating has taken on a new twist to coordinate with the grey, white and softer home colors of today. Ditch the classic pumpkin colors of heavy oranges, browns and reds for fall, and opt for a lighter variation of the theme this year.
Fall front door wreaths don’t have to be laden with Halloween trinkets. Go for a more sophisticated fall look with a wreath brimming with natural elements from outdoors such as thistle, seed pods, grasses and dried flowers. You can buy them finished online or make your own with a grapevine wreath base, wire and a glue gun. Add a velvet or textured ribbon at the top of the piece to hang your wreath. Brass wreath hangers lay on the top of your door and are also a nice addition, alleviating the need for a nail in your door.
Floral arrangements that include grasses from your yard that are starting to seed and dry mixed with larger seed pods and protea (found online from Hawaiian online sources or at Washington Floral in Tacoma) will last indoors for many months and add rich natural texture and color to your decorating theme. Adding herbs from the garden such as large sage leaves, chive, parsley and dill will enhance the aroma and also add color. Floral arrangements can be made in large ceramic urns with tree branches for extra height on fireplace hearths, kitchen tables or foyer tables. Drying hydrangeas are also nice to add, bringing in soft color to the mix. 22

fluorescent or LED blue light bulbs in your home’s light fixtures or lamps in the winter. Warming up your lighting to look like warm candlelight is the name of the game.

YOUR WORLD
We excel at listening and implementing each client’s wants and needs to successfully reach the finish line.
Outdoor lighting is important to expand the view from your home at night. Replace any burnedout exterior landscaping bulbs and clean solar lights to prepare for winter. String Edison bulbs or white Christmas lights in your trees for extra outdoor lighting. Battery-operated candles are also terrific in lanterns by your front door or outdoor seating areas. Make sure they are covered or brought inside when the rain starts. Bring in a chunky knit throw for your sofa in neutral colors to add warmth, texture and style to any room. Faux fur throw blankets are still on trend but in lighter colors this year (ditch the orange and black cheetah print) and go for snow leopard, white fox or faux shearling. Bundle up and enjoy the season! Deann Hammer is the owner of Broadway Design, a boutique interior design firm in Gig Harbor. HOW TO REWIRE
OUR BRAIN W H AT F O O D , A K I D ’ S G A M E , A N D O U R P E R S P E CT I V E H A V E IN COMMON BY JENNIFER “TAZ” VAZQUEZ
R
ecently, I was enjoying a delicious meal, overlooking the harbor, and letting my thoughts float along as I watched the boats sail by. I contemplated how do we choose where to eat given all the options? Some say it depends based on mood, experiences or perspective.
Jennifer Vazquez
Life Coaching I help you discover what sets your soul on fire ... Rediscover your creativity, beauty and power! Let’s create how you want to show up in this world!
That led to asking myself, “Can we rewire our brain to see a more positive perspective?” Neuroscience, the study of the brain, says we can by retraining our brain to see differently, and more positively, which changes how we interpret an experience. How? Our brain likes to organize and recognize patterns so it can process and understand all the input it receives. Unfortunately, it can often be in a biased and inaccurate way. It keeps our body constantly scanning for threats and presents us with “examples” based on negative messages we picked up as kids. For example, a repeated phrase from a parent, “That’s a good girl/boy,“ followed by a show of affection (or even withholding affection) can turn into a limiting belief of, “I have to be perfect to be loved or accepted.” It becomes tied to who we are as a person. Unless we become aware of, and question, the belief, we assume it to be true. In essence, our brain keeps us stuck in negative patterns and perspectives, reinforcing the past negative beliefs. Our inner critic is the voice inside our head that repeats these limiting beliefs, usually subconsciously through negative thoughts, thousands of times a day! Studies show we have over 60,000 thoughts a day, of which 95 percent are repetitive, and 80 percent of those are negative!
Contact Me Today! 360.591.9256 • tazvazquez.com dancingdogs2@hotmail.com
If we choose to believe a belief after a negative experience, it becomes part of a repeated thought and story we tell ourselves. This repeated story then becomes a repeated habit we act on, or respond to, because our brain shows us “proof ” the original negative belief is true. It then becomes the perspective we interpret the world through. Wow! So our brain believes the perspective we tell it! In order to change perspectives (and what our brain shows us), we want to become aware of, and interrupt, these negative thoughts/beliefs.
24
|
GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
One playful way is via a kid’s game, “Red Light, Green Light.” When you notice a negative feeling, curiously ask your inner critic what the thought is. Once you are aware of the thought, say, “Red Light!” Curiously ask what is the limiting belief linked to the thought? Next, ask for example(s) or “proof ” of what your inner critic is saying is true. Acknowledge the examples as one perspective and say, “Yellow Light!” This keeps resistance down and your brain open to alternative perspectives. Now, nonjudgmentally, think of examples when the opposite is true. Follow it up by saying, “Green Light!” This allows your brain to see and look for other perspectives. The game helps you become more aware of your negative thoughts and beliefs that may be keeping you stuck and/or are not serving you any longer. You’ll also notice how your brain organizes data and begins to see more positive perspectives. If you want to change your perspective, stop listening to the negative repetitive thoughts. Instead, focus on repeating positive ones to create a new thought, a new story, and a new habit. Create a more positive perspective for how you view and experience the world by playing this fun game. Ready to play? ... ”Green light!”

Why Can’t We be Friends? FA C I N G CO N F L I CT D U R I N G S E PA R AT I O N A N D D I V O R C E
“I
By Felicia Soleil, Family Mediator/Attorney
’d like us to remain friends when this is over.” As a divorce mediator, this is a standard refrain I hear when asking new clients about their goals for the process. Remaining “friends” is always an ideal if moving forward in a coparenting relationship, and sometimes is rewarding if parties also share close relationships with each other’s extended family and other friendships. However, more often than not, the requirements of the separation and divorce process itself can present a test to even those most committed to maintaining a positive relationship. Navigating disentangling the financial aspects of ending a marriage, coupled with the logistics of implementing a residential schedule for the children, can create an unanticipated roller coaster of emotions. Information has to be gathered, options are generated and negotiated, and decisions reached that may leave one party upset. Sometimes, this is due to either or both parties simply being misinformed (or altogether uninformed) about certain legal aspects of their case, such as the rules around child support. Other times, it may be philosophical differences of opinion between the parties that lead to discord, such as affording a certain post-divorce lifestyle at the expense of the other. When conflict erupts during mediation, as it often will, one aspect of my job as mediator is to normalize these reactions (as long as those reactions don’t rise to the level of abuse). Anger, veiled threats to end mediation and “go to court,” and emotional withdrawal are frequent defense mechanisms when faced with an uncertain outcome. A common response becomes, “I thought we could be friends, but now I guess not.” Ouch. At these junctures, I often advise the parties that separation and divorce are often “two steps forward, one step back.” It takes practice to make complicated decisions that will impact them for several years into their futures. Everyone wants to look out for themselves, despite

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
an earlier promise to look out for the other party as well. Now that idea of a post-divorce “friendship” is threatened. These clients are getting divorced for a myriad of different reasons. But what they all have in common is that their underlying intimate partnership and “friendship” has been fractured beyond repair. As a divorce lawyer and mediator (and despite the rampant cynicism in my profession), I’m always trying to spread optimism that these parties can use a non-adversarial process, such as mediation or other outsideof-court intervention, to navigate their financial and parenting issues without making the situation worse. Best-case scenarios do include a lasting friendship that honors their common bonds, such as children and extended families. I’ve experienced several couples who are successful at this, but it takes time. In the short term, what if these emotionally conflicted parties changed their narrative from one of “being friends” to simply “being friendly” until things calm down, healing can begin, and tough mutual decisions don’t have to be made? It’s not an all or nothing proposition. Agreeing to merely be “friendly,” respectful, civil, perhaps even empathetic, and generally positive toward one another moving forward may take the pressure off trying to create a sustained relationship post-separation and divorce that is otherwise based on hard feelings. Overall, it may actually help build a healthier and better foundation for a co-parenting relationship into the future. Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via videoconference or phone.
Building Better Solutions for Clients With almost 30 years experience serving families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County, Felicia Soleil provides more constructive alternatives to dissolving a marriage outside of a courtroom. In addition to her family law practice, she also provides mediation services, offering legal support, education and case management - from simple to complex - for separation and divorce, parenting plans, child support and prenuptial agreements.
Facing a divorce or separation? Felicia focuses on reducing and resolving conflict, helping you transition by moving on, not just moving out.

e all know men and women are different in some fundamental ways—even in regard to financial planning.
• Women have longer life expectancies, which presents several financial challenges for women: • Women will need to stretch their retirement dollars further. • Women are more likely to need some type of long-term care and may have to face some of their health-care needs alone. • Women could have ultimate responsibility for disposition of the marital estate.

• Women are more likely to be caregivers. Over time, being a caregiver can have significant financial implications. • Women are more likely to be living on their own. This means they'll need to take sole responsibility for protecting their income and making financial decisions. • Women need to protect their assets. As women continue to earn money, become the main breadwinners for their families, and run their own businesses, it's vital that they take steps to protect their assets, both personal and business. Steps women can take Today, women have more financial responsibility for themselves and their families. It's critical that women know how to save, invest and plan for the future. Here are some things women can do: • Take control of your money. Create a budget, manage debt and credit wisely, set and prioritize financial goals, and implement a savings and investment strategy to meet those goals. • Become a knowledgeable investor. Learn basic investing concepts, such as asset classes, risk tolerance, time horizon, diversification, inflation, the role of various financial vehicles like 401(k)s and IRAs. Have patience, be willing to ask questions, admit mistakes, and seek help when necessary. • Plan for retirement. Estimate how much money you'll need in retirement. Understand your Social Security benefit.
At retirement, understand your retirement plan distribution options. Factor the cost of health care (including long-term care) into your retirement planning, and understand the basic rules of Medicare. • Protect your assets. Identify potential risk exposure and implement strategies to reduce that exposure. For example, life and disability insurance is vital to protect your ability to earn an income and/or care for your family in the event of disability or death. In some cases, more sophisticated strategies, such as other legal entities or trusts, may be needed. • Create an estate plan. Create a plan with basic estate planning documents, such as a will, trust, durable power of attorney, and health-care proxy. or the past several years, one can’t help but notice the beautiful banners on a month-long display—in conjunction with Veterans Day—along the Gig Harbor waterfront. The goal, each year, is to fill all 40 available downtown locations with banners honoring those in our community who have served, or are currently serving, our community and our nation. While attending a National Main Street Conference several years back in Kansas City, Missouri, Mary DesMarais, executive director of the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance, learned of a veterans banner program in Emporia, Kansas, and she decided to bring the concept back to Gig Harbor. After presenting the idea to the Alliance Design Committee and Board of Directors, she received resounding affirmation to proceed with the program for the downtown waterfront to honor our military heroes. The Veterans Banner Project began in Gig Harbor in 2017 as an opportunity to publicly honor the military service of our community’s veterans and those on active duty. The project was expanded last year, in light of COVID, to include first responders, “as they certainly have been heroes for our communities,” smiles Mary.

Each 22-by-45-inch two-sided vinyl banner features a color photo of a local hero and includes their rank, service branch and years of service. The banners are attached to light standards throughout the downtown waterfront on Harborview Drive, North Harborview Drive, Lower Pioneer and Judson Street. The cost of each banner is $200, with proceeds (minus production costs) donated to the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation—which supports local veterans, first responders and their families. “We limit the number of banners to 40 because, as a project of the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, we only place them within the state assigned ‘Main Street’ boundaries, i.e. the downtown waterfront,” explains Mary. “I have been in discussion with the Chamber of Commerce about the possibility of expanding the program to other areas in Gig Harbor should the interest go beyond the 40 banners.” Though the opportunity has ended to participate in this year’s program, be sure to make a note to purchase a banner to honor your own local hero to have it proudly displayed for the community to see. T
he tranquility of the harbor and the amazing amount of natural beauty, wildlife and marine species is a big reason so many call Gig Harbor home, and always will. Below the water is an amazing amount of biodiversity, and keeping it so is a top priority of many citizens and community groups. Harbor WildWatch continues to be a great steward for the local ecosystems through educating visitors and locals, adults and kids alike. The nonprofit’s programs are experienced by thousands each month, and its digital programs have made their way to screens all across the globe. The Skansie Visitor & Interpretive Center in downtown Gig Harbor brings visitors up close with the biodiversity that is all around them, providing a truly unique experience. We recently caught up with Executive Director Lindsey Stover to ask about Harbor WildWatch’s recent Make Waves fundraiser, what the support from the community means, and some upcoming programs that anyone can take part in. How did the event go, and what did participants enjoy the most? Last month was Harbor WildWatch’s seventh annual
Make Waves benefit to support local environmental education. This year, over 100 attendees joined us virtually to celebrate our successes and challenges over the last year through a mix of live and prerecorded videos that highlighted our work in the community. Participants enjoyed seeing videos of all the virtual programs we delivered at the beginning of the year, and hearing about our plan for a hybrid program approach for the remainder of 2021. Many guests purchased our Salish Sea Gift Box to enhance their virtual experience, which included salty and sweet snacks, our 2021 commemorative pin, and the ingredients for our signature cocktail. They also enjoyed our behind-the-scenes tour of our studio location at Ocean5, cocktail tutorial, and virtual program blooper reel. In total, this event raised over $20,000 from sponsors and participants who raised their virtual paddle to support our mission of inspiring stewardship for the Salish Sea. How important is this event when it comes to helping carry out the programs you provide to the community throughout the year? This event is incredibly important because it is our only fundraising event each year. We rely on

We are thrilled to bring back our popular Pier Into the Night program on the first Saturday of the month from October through March. This program takes participants on an underwater journey of Gig Harbor Bay at night using SCUBA divers and an underwater ROV. We will also have in-person salmon tours in November and December to coincide with the Chum salmon run in Donkey Creek. Finally, you can visit us Thursday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm at the Skansie Visitor & Interpretive Center in downtown Gig Harbor. Here you can touch live marine creatures in our “touch tank,” examine plankton under a microscope, play in our augmented reality sandbox, or view our extensive skull collection of animals from around the world. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? While this was our seventh Make Waves benefit, it was our second year holding this event virtually. We very much hoped to be back to our inperson event this year, but we didn’t feel it was safe for our staff, Board or supporters with Delta surging in our community. Encouraging Continued Education Local nonprofit dedicated to providing scholarships for Gig Harbor Women
By Jillian Chandler
T
he Minerva Scholarship Fund is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Founded in 1991, the nonprofit has been providing scholarships for women whose formal education has been interrupted for at least one year and who reside or work within the Peninsula School District Boundaries #401. The nonprofit was established by three women—Colonel Sybil Mercer, Army nurse; Colonel Florence Casey, Ph.D. economist with the federal government; and Ruth Taylor, a local school librarian—who were all members of the Gig Harbor branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). They knew the value of education and believed deeply in providing support to women in our own community, which inspired the group to create the fund—first from their own money (each donating $5,000), with friends at AAUW-Gig Harbor sharing the vision of the importance of higher education for women and matching their contributions by raising an additional $15,000. Just two years after the Minerva Scholarship fund was established, these women were able to offer the first Minerva scholarship in 1993. “Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula residents, and many others, have contributed generously to the Minerva Scholarship Fund for over 20 years,” says Patty Nelson, president of the Minerva Scholarship Fund. “Together they created a fund that has grown large enough to allow scholarships to be awarded from earnings, while leaving the capital in the fund undisturbed.” Donations to the Minerva Scholarship provide support to women within our community; many who would not be able to pursue their educational dreams without Minerva’s support. “A Minerva Scholarship not only improves the lives of the women and their own families, it benefits our local community as women complete their education and work among us as professionals,” shares Julie Offner, board member. Each spring, the nonprofit awards scholarships to deserving women living and working within the boundaries of the Peninsula School District. “In the last two years, we awarded more than $100,000 in total,” shares Julie Buffington, vice president. “What could be more rewarding and gratifying to know that we, Minerva, are making such a difference in our own community and in the lives of the women who receive the scholarship?” Once the qualified candidates are notified, the board holds a reception to present them with a certificate from Minerva. The stories of these women are filled with excitement and gratitude as they embark on their quest to enhance education and their employment opportunities.

Past recipients of academic support have pursued certificates and degrees in diverse areas such as environmental science, criminal justice, gerontology, truck driving, social work and screenwriting. “Many women concentrate on advanced degrees in the medical field, from radiology to physical therapy, with previous Minerva Scholarship award recipients working as nurses, teachers, administrators, musicians and paralegals. The success of the organization’s mission is due to Minerva scholars, founders, donors, Board of Directors and the greater Gig Harbor

community. The Board is currently seeking local residents, with a strong background in education or human services, who are interested in serving on the board. “Serving on the board or donating to Minerva is an opportunity to do something meaningful and uplifting, with long-term consequences,” Elizabeth Robinson, marketing/communication chair for Minerva, attests. If you are interested in being considered for a board of directors position, please email minervagigharbor@gmail.org. “The women on the Minerva Board of Directors have a sense of ‘belonging’ in the community. We have worked in the education system, been a part of Rotary, the Gig Harbor AAUW, the Yacht Club; engaged in civic and political life of the area,” states Elizabeth. “Even board members who live outside of Gig Harbor have a long history with the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor. We enjoy making a difference right here at home.” In celebration of their 30th anniversary, Minerva Scholarship Fund has been offered a challenge donation of $5,000, with a goal to match or exceed this generous gift by the end of 2021. For those who would like to donate, a donation form can be found at MinervaGigHarbor.org/donate, and contributions can be mailed to: Minerva Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2705, Gig Harbor, WA 98335.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS
LOCAL PADDLERS BRING MEDALS BACK TO THE HARBOR BY COLIN ANDERSON
A
lan Anderson remembers the days when the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team (GHCKRT) was only just an idea. “When I started the program, it was just two 11-year-olds, my son and his friend,” he recalled. This was 2002, and just a couple years later, in 2004, the team, now consisting of seven members, took home its first championship. The success and uniqueness of the sport continued to bring in more and more young regional athletes and with it more program success and podium finishes. In 2012, the National Championships were held in Seattle, and the team took home the title in their own backyard. “It was at that moment that we really made the commitment to a winning program,” said Anderson. While not without some bumps along the way, this team is now year in

and year out a national powerhouse in the sport of paddling, and recent results show that the training and commitment of its athletes is paying off at the highest levels. It was a whirlwind end of summer for the team as it began its travels with a stop in Oklahoma City for the ACA Sprint Canoe and Kayak National Championships, held August 21 through 24. Having been crowned national champions in all but one of the years since the 2012 victory in Seattle, expectations were high once again, and the team did not disappoint, taking home the team title once again. While many athletes hit the podium, one race of particular note was the 1000-meter U14 race. Members of the GHKCRT finished in the top six places in the final, a sign that things are looking good for the future, and that young athletes entering the program early are already seeing great success at the highest levels of competition.
Next up for the team was a trip to the U23 World Championships held in Portugal in early September. Of the 23 athletes chosen to represent the U.S., 11 are from the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team: Sarah Grady, Aaron Small, Kenny Kasperbauer, Jasper Caddell, Benji Blanck, Jonathan Grady, Andreea Ghizila, Emma Albrecht, Zoe Libner, Elena Wolgamot and Weston Hester. Current Head Coach Aaron Huston was also selected to lead the group at the international championship. It was 2007, when the team got its first taste of international competition. “It is a whole ‘nother ball game over there. It (canoe/kayak racing) is like soccer or baseball here. They really love it,” explained founding coach Anderson. He says that for years the team sort of “beat its head against the wall” and didn’t see much success at the international level. It was then that Anderson decided the team needed a change in leadership to reach its goals of competing at the biggest world competitions, and
Huston was brought in to bring those goals into focus. “He has been the biggest difference in our team and athletes. He’s brought a wealth of experience, and even kids from around the country to Gig Harbor, and he now operates what I would call a training center,” said Anderson. Coach Huston brings experience as a top competitive weightlifter and has also coached highly competitive swimmers before taking the role with this team. “He’s brought a lot of science and technique and other tools to the team that they really needed to compete at the world level,” said Anderson. A trip halfway across the world for the highest level of competition during a global pandemic certainly presents a lot of challenges for young athletes. Raucous stadiums are also something the team doesn’t always see stateside. Still, coaches prep them far in advance of these GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

competitions in order to best prepare them for race day. “We get them into a routine here at home that they can then carry over when they compete internationally,” remarked Anderson. “It was really gratifying to see them handle the pressure of the event and the full grandstands.” Up against the toughest competitors in the world, the team continues to see improvements. Several tandems and individuals landed in ‘B’ finals, putting them within the top-20 finishers of the event. One tandem did make a huge statement for the program, as Jasper Caddell and Elena Wolgamot teamed up on the mixed gender 500-meter K2 race and captured the silver medal. Their time was just six-tenths of a second from gold; a truly impressive showing at the highest level of competition. Finally, another set of competitors was off to the Olympic Hope Regatta, September 10 through 12, which was held in Račice, Czech Republic. Those chosen to represent the U.S. were: Jake Galvan, Conner Peterson, Peyton Kusche, Sarah Grady, Zella Wells Parkinson, Benji Blanck, Noah Larsen, Weston Hester, Stella DeSantis, Lana Weigelt, Zoe Libner and Emma Albrecht. Coach Alyson Morse would also accompany Coach Huston for the Regatta. These young athletes, again, made their mark, especially on the women’s side in which DeSantis, Albrecht and Grady each brought home bronze medals in their events. While standing on a podium at a national or world championship is a dream come true, most athletes will attest that doing so during the Olympics would be a dream truly realized. That dream was realized in Tokyo for 19-year old Nevin Harrison, a former team member who shocked the world and took home the gold medal in the Women’s 200-Meter Canoe Sprint, besting a six-time world champion by nearly a second and becoming the first gold medalist for the U.S. in women’s canoeing at the Olympics. According to team USA, Harrison’s gold medal is the first Olympic canoeing medal of any kind for Team USA since Greg Barton took bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Games in the men’s K-1 1000. And it was the first Olympic medal for a U.S. woman in canoeing— before 2020, all women’s Olympic events were in kayaks—since 1964. It is just the fifth Olympic medal for Team USA in a canoe event and first since 1948. Anderson says that Harrison’s win has kicked off a rush of interest in 40

the team, especially from young girls not just in the harbor but from all around. “We tell these young ladies that the door is definitely opening for them. It’s a very exciting time, especially for young women, as we look towards the ’24 and ’28 games.” Paddling one of these boats is in itself a major challenge. It’s when paddlers learn the balance and begin to go fast that Anderson feels gives athletes the hook needed to pursue higher levels of competition. The team makes it clear that it’s not a recreational league team, and you need to be willing to put in the work in order to accomplish great things. The results this summer are proof that the right attitude and commitment along with buying into the program will put these young athletes on a path to success. “If you have a dream and are willing to work hard, you can accomplish anything. Here you get to challenge yourself against the best in the world before you’re even 18,” said Anderson. “It’s really something special.”

“Academics have always been super important to me and my family … I’m also planning on playing college football, which is something that I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid.”
hough you might not have heard of him, Gig Harbor High School senior Cole Rushforth is probably one of the most famous figures in the area. Cole opened an account on TikTok last year when school was done remotely and he had a little more free time. What started as just a few hundred views has swollen to Cole becoming one of the top 1 percent most followed people on the social media giant. “@Colewiththefacts currently has over 2.1 million followers. I began posting in June 2020, and have since amassed over 130 million views and over 40 million likes,” he said. While clearly a big part of his life, Cole maintains a strict balance of school, sports, family and friends, each of which comes before his TikTok celebrity. He’s currently a starting wide receiver and linebacker for the football team and in the spring competes in various sprints and the triple jump on the
While he could probably make a wellcompensated career off his TikTok fame, Cole will be following a childhood dream of going to college after he graduates. “Academics have always been super important to me and my family, which is why I plan to attend at least four years of college at a university (currently narrowing down my top choices). I’m also planning on playing college football, which is something that I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid.” At school, Cole’s favorite subjects are history and Spanish. He feels strongly that learning a second language is something everyone should try. “I feel that it’s important to understand other people and cultures around the world, and learning a language is one of the best ways to start! I’ve had some incredible Spanish teachers in both middle school and high school that have really contributed to my love of the subject.” Outside of school, Cole volunteers at his church, St. Nicholas, and also enjoys helping out with the Backpacks 4 Kids program. While pursuing TikTok further could be a career path, he can also see himself following in the family footsteps. “I have a lot of career interests, but my top one is business/ marketing. My father works in the medical field as a medical sales representative, so I’ve also always been interested in helping people by working in the health field.”

hen asked what she wanted to do after graduation, Peninsula High School’s Annalis Parker didn’t really have a set plan. That’s likely not too surprising to those who know her, as the list of subjects, activities and hobbies she has is quite long. “Career paths that interest me are either on the side of helping endangered species and protecting them from poachers, or on a completely opposite end, diving into my love of art and music, and taking on a career of art director, creating fashion magazines or planning fashion events,” she shared. This senior has kept herself plenty busy at school and in her personal life. She’s competed on the volleyball team and is currently choir and ASB president at the school. She loves music but also other forms of art like theater, journaling and drawing. She’s also a very active member of her church—Chapel Hill. “I am a high school
While she enjoys the creativity of art and theater, she also enjoys science, English, history, and anything music related. “I think these are so fascinating to me because they’re all so creative, they all work your brain and you can learn so much about yourself through all of these subjects,” she explained. In fact, two of her favorite teachers, Mrs. Ellis and Mr. Newton, come from vastly different subjects: choir and science. “I know that if you asked anyone about the impact Mrs. Ellis had on their lives, they could go on and on about her. Her loving, gentle and kind spirit made her classroom feel like home. Mr. Newton can make anyone laugh. His ability to make hard subjects such as chemistry and physics fun and enjoyable is beyond me.”
Help us continue to serve children by donating or volunteering today, and by joining our Ripples of Hope Campaign!
Annalis also enjoys the fact that both teachers treat their students like young adults and not just another teenager. As far as finding a future after graduation, Annalis has her eyes set on moving out of her comfort zone and heading to a school on the East Coast. She’s definitely okay with not having a set plan but wants a big part of her college experience to be spent learning about other societies and seeing the world abroad. “My dream is to travel during college, and I want to experience different cultures and immerse myself into what I am studying,” she said.

ECHOLOGY ON DONKEY CREEK TRAIL A poetic reflection on cycles BY RACHEL KELLY
W
ith the return of salmon to our local waters, Echology is here to honor the process through written word. A combination of the words “echo” and “ecology,” Echology is a series of plaques that display locally written poems along the Donkey Creek Trail. Each poem is written on the subject of cycles, the natural rhythm of nature that salmon follows as it returns to its birthplace to spawn. While Echology is meant to honor nature in all its wonders, specifically salmon, the project is more than that. Echology is an invitation, a reflection on where our own place in nature lies. “Donkey Creek was one of the first places that I saw salmon,” recalls

Jennifer Chushcoff. Jennifer was the recipient of this year's Creative Endeavor Grant, and the creator and organizer of Echology. “It’s quite the experience to witness the struggle, the drive for that final push upriver after traveling hundreds of miles. Something has called them home ….” As she contemplated the use of the Creative Endeavor Grant, her mind traveled back through her memories to places where she felt most at ease. The intrinsic mystery of the lifecycle of salmon, the push and pull of life and death, seemed to ripple into her consciousness. She wanted to create a space in nature where others could not only experience nature’s healing balm but appreciate the wonder of that same mystery.

Echology is an invitation, a reflection on where our own place in nature lies.
She thought she would combine her talents for different mediums within art, as well as represent the varying voices within our community. Much like the many salmon that swim in one river, so are we, in many perspectives, along the same path. “I’ve always enjoyed exploring the intersection of visual and literary art. The natural world and the way it shapes us, and in turn, the way we shape it,” and so Echology was born. For Jennifer, nature is a place of respite, rest and rejuvenation. Participation in nature is an intrinsic part of being human. Judging by the sheer number of people who find themselves out in nature at all times of the year in the majestic Pacific Northwest, it would seem that Jennifer is right. We are eager to participate in, observe, love and protect the nature that nurtures us. We recognize the importance of getting in our regular dose of outdoors, cherishing the habitats and species that make it possible. A walk through Echology along Donkey Creek Trail seems like the perfect combination of art, reflection, relaxation and conservation. 46

There are 10 plaques along the Donkey Creek Trail, nine of which are filled with selected poems by local authors that vary in their perspectives and cultures. Authors such as Elijah Brambila, who is a graduating senior from Peninsula High School. Or Rena Priest, who is a member of the Lhaq’temish nation. There’s DJ Fowler, who is an award-winning author and poet. And Brett Marlo, who is best known for Brett Marlo Design Build. There’s previous Tacoma Poet Laureate Josie Edmonds Turner, and the current Poet Laureate Lydia K. Valentine. Local Whistling Shade writer Justin Teerlinck, and local photographer and real estate agent Cathy Warner. Each creative contributes a unique perspective, fulfilling an important aspect of art. The last, but certainly not the least, contributor was us. The 10th plaque showcases a community poem. Jennifer achieved this poem sending out a call to the community for contributions. The contributions were then combined and edited, culminating in a poem made of many voices. In this way the trail is

representative of community collaboration, fulfilling vital commonplace ideals such as discovery and inclusion. Echology on Donkey Creek Trail is not simply just a project by Jennifer Chushcoff, or a highlight of local authors. Although both are true. It doesn’t just honor salmon in nature, although it does do that. Echology is also a project by us; it honors our place in nature. It is a reminder to us that we’re a part of this whole complex cycle. Our voices are heard and seen and live eternal through the legacy that we set in motion as we go along. We survive and thrive in our community, and as individuals. In observing the salmon, we find that we are much like them. 48

As we walk in nature, we seem to find our place. As the river embraces its now aged salmon, it fosters its young even as the parents lay on the bottom of the riverbed to rest. Echology reminds us that everything in nature has its part. As a part of that whole, we too send echoes out into the world throughout our life. We fulfill a purpose: We nurture, we relinquish, and we foster. Just as we have been affected, we also affect. Throughout our lives we participate in the ripples that undulate along the ocean, and end on the riverbank. To quote Da Vinci, “When you put your hand in a flowing stream you touch the last that has gone before and the first of what is still to come.”

Looking Forward. Building. Bridging. Enriching. Community foundation looks forward to what the future holds
By Jillian Chandler
N
ow in its 15th year, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation (GGHF) has much to celebrate!
Since forming in 2006, the organization’s work across its five mission-focused areas—Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Recreation and Social Capital—has resulted in the distribution and reinvestment of more than $12 million in assets into the greater Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula communities. And, unlike many of the more than 800 community foundations across the nation, GGHF actually provides direct mission-aligned programs and services through its Curious by Nature Preschool, Gig Harbor Senior Center, EnviroCorps, Gig Harbor Basket Brigade, and others—in addition to providing grants to other area nonprofit organizations, various scholarships supporting higher education as well as early learning, and helping to raise critical capital to provide perpetual resources to help meet the critical and changing needs of the community. For the past 10 years, the foundation has carried out its work and naturebased early learning programs from a rented location. Early on, the site provided access to more than 18 acres of surrounding undeveloped lands, and, in addition, the nearby Adam Tallman Park provided a rich and diverse environment for the school. It was always known that use of the neighboring lands would be temporary. “The writing was on the wall, as the foundation began an active search in 2017 for a site with sufficient acreage to support its educational programs, space for learning gardens, and place that would both enable the creation of a model sustainable ‘community campus’ to connect people and resources,” says Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, CEO and president emeritus. Soon after the search began, much of the land was converted to housing, while simultaneously the community’s demand for the school’s outdoor early learning programs exploded. All while GGHF, its other programs and community needs, grew and changed as well. In late 2017, quite by accident and fortune, the vision for a community campus was given a breath of life—and in July 2021, after three years of work to attain the essential conditional use permit for required site improvements, the foundation received the green light! “The munificence of John and Kathy Allen has afforded our community a matchless opportunity to develop a much-needed forever home for the foundation that will serve as headquarters to its administrative office, the school and other programs,” affirms Julie.

Situated on 6 acres of a larger 32-acre property in the Artondale area of the Gig Harbor peninsula—known locally as the “Graham Ranch” after the family that resided there for more than 60 years—the Community Campus opens an array of possibilities that will enable the GGHF to better meet community needs and deliver services across its diverse programs, and offer the community an exceptional outdoor learning space. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the Community Campus will provide the vital space needed to assure the GGHF’s continued ability to offer the quality programs and services our community needs.
GGHF is excited and eager for the coming months as they work forward to raise the essential funding to bring the Community Campus to life. “The foundation works collaboratively to build, bridge and enrich our great Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula region by raising funds, advocating for and providing support to help meet diverse and emerging community needs, and the Community Campus will enable us to continue to do so and grow our programs to meet community needs,” states Ariel Gustanski, the foundation’s COO. The foundation would not be where they are today with the support of the community, local organizations and businesses, community members, GGHF staff, Board of Directors, and most importantly, volunteers—all visionaries. “The most rewarding thing about the work that the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation does is seeing the direct impact our programs, services, grants and events have within our community, and the Community Campus will enable the growth of such work,” smiles Judson Morris, GGHF president. To find out more about the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation, and what you can do to help ensure their mission and manifest their vision, visit GigHarborFoundation.org.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING Exercise both your physical and cognitive well-being By Maya Nola, Occupational Therapy Student
T
he American Heart Association recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week, ideally, spread out over the week. How we obtain these active minutes does not need to be complicated. A simple daily brisk walk can help to promote a healthier lifestyle. According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of walking include maintaining a healthy weight, preventing or managing various conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, improving cardiovascular fitness, strengthening your bones and muscles, improving muscle endurance, improving your balance and coordination, strengthening the immune system, and reducing stress and tension. Along with all of these physical benefits, those who walk daily experience
cognitive benefits as well including increased energy levels, improved mood, cognition, memory and sleep, fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, and better quality of life. Technique and Form When walking for fitness, it is important to consider technique and form to prevent injury and get the most out of your stride. • Keep your head up: Look forward in front of you, not at the ground. • Relax your neck, shoulders and back. • Swing your arms freely with your elbows slightly bent. • Slightly tighten your core muscles and keep your back straight and tall.

Halloween and all of its sugary goodness may be lurking just around the corner, but that doesn't mean that you can't incorporate healthy ingredients into your delightful and frightful goodies. Treat the kids to a platter of Halloween-inspired snacks like peeled cuties with a sliver of celery as the stem to create a pumpkin; banana, peeled and cut in half lengthwise, adding mini chocolate chips for the eyes and "O" mouth for a friendly ghost; a bowl of grapes for eyeballs. Healthy has never been more fun!
Independent Family Practice Clinics in Gig Harbor
Along with all of these physical benefits, those who walk daily experience cognitive benefits as well • Walk smoothly, rolling your foot from heel to toe with each step. Building a Walking Routine • Start slow: You may choose to start with taking a quick five- to 10-minute walk during your lunch break. Once this becomes a comfortable routine, you can build to a 20-minute walk after work. Setting realistic goals for ourselves helps to set us up for success in the long run. • Choose the right gear: Wear supportive shoes that have good arch support and thick, flexible soles to best support your feet and protect joints. You also may choose to wear an activity tracker or pedometer to help track your progress over time. • Select your course: Choose an outdoor course with a smooth, even surface. In the winter, you may choose to walk indoors in stores or use a treadmill to avoid icy roads. • Prepare your body: Maintain a slower pace for the first and last five minutes of your walk to act as a “warm-up” and “cool-down.” It is also important to gently stretch after walking to keep muscles flexible and strong.
• Enjoy your walk: Listen to music or a podcast that you enjoy while walking. If you’re enjoying yourself, it will be easier to build a routine. If you don’t like walking alone, try walking with a friend. Having a walking buddy can help to hold you accountable. Tips for Adding Walking into Your Day • Take the stairs instead of the elevator when possible. • Walk to local stores instead of driving, or park further away from your destination.

he last thing you want to worry about when enjoying an evening out without the kids is an emergency situation involving your child while you are not there. It’s important to prepare both your babysitter as well as your children on how best to avoid an emergency situation, and how to handle one if it were to occur. When looking to hire a babysitter, it’s always a good idea to check with friends and family members and seek out referrals from there— if they’re willing to share, of course. There is also the option of going through a local, established babysitting/nanny company that vets out their babysitters and nannies, ensuring your children will be in the best of hands. And, when interviewing for the position, it doesn’t hurt to require that they have been CPR/First Aid certified. You can even offer to pay for the classes if they are not. Once you’ve chosen your sitter, now it’s time to set them up for a successful afternoon or evening with your kids. Set Your Sitter Up for Success • Show your sitter around your home and let him/her know if there are any rooms/spaces that are off limits to the children, where things are located, etc. • Make sure that your home has been child proofed, meaning you’ve secured safety measures in the kitchen, bathroom, balconies, windows, decks and around pools (latched doors/safety locks where the dangerous chemicals are stored, outlets plugged and out of reach). • Prepare an agenda for the babysitter; make it fun and be prepared that your agenda might not go quite as planned. • Leave the sitter with appropriate snacks and meals, and do some meal prep.

• Leave the sitter with the schedule of naps for your kids and expected sleeping routines. (Ex. Read them two stories before bed, give them a drink of water, and make sure they have their special blanket and stuffed animal.) • Explain bath time safety—number one rule, never leave a child alone in any body of water, including a bathtub. • Let your sitter know when he/she can expect you home. If you are hoping to stay out later than planned, be sure to call your sitter and
ask if that is okay. It is imperative to respect the babysitter and his or her time—this is a mutual relationship, and the sitter is an important extension of your family. In Case of Accident/Emergency • Have a place where your sitter can access all First Aid basics in case of an accident, whether it be scrape or something more serious. • Leave the sitter with important contact information including emergency family names and numbers, family doctor’s contact info, the address of your home, home phone number, etc. • Have a printout displaying CPR steps for infants, children and adults. Be sure to also have the steps (with text and images is helpful) of what to do in the case of a choking baby, toddler, child, teen or adult, or how to help a choking special needs person or person in a wheelchair. • Not only should you have a fire extinguisher that can be easily found and accessed by your sitter, but have a printout of the steps showing how to use a fire extinguisher safely. Setting up your sitter with a schedule and everything they need is a sure way to set them up for success and alleviate the worry of leaving, and ensures your child/children will have a great experience while you’re away.

GINGER THE BENEFITS OF THIS TRUE SUPERFOOD By Jennifer Miller
W
ith fall officially here, there is more on the horizon than college football and changing leaves. Germs. I don’t need to remind you all the yuckies our kids bring home from school and sports. We all do our best to keep them at bay. I am a big believer in all the vitamins and supplements, drinking all the water, and doing my best to get a decent amount of sleep. Like many of you, as a busy parent, I don't have time to get sick, so I’ll do whatever I can to up my immune system. I’ve been so lucky to work in an office that supplies me with daily ginger shots. The benefits of this spicy little root are many, and I won’t let a day go by now without a shot of ginger. Ginger is a flowering plant that originated in Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, which is closely related to turmeric and cardamom. While its flowers are a beautiful yellow leafy assortment, it’s the root that is most commonly used. Ginger comes in many forms, the most popular being fresh, dried, powdered or, my personal favorite, juiced. With a lightly spicy and unique taste and smell from its most important bioactive component, gingerol, it’s a popular spice as well as medicinal. Ginger has a long and deep history in traditional and alternative medicine. Its medicinal usage dates all the way back to more than 2,000 years ago in ancient China. Now its many benefits are backed by science. Most commonly, ginger is used for all things

stomach related. It is highly effective in reducing the effects of nausea and vomiting. Most commonly it is prescribed to pregnant women as a safe cure or curb for morning sickness, and is also a favorite among travelers for motion sickness. Even just holding ginger oil up to my nose during a bout of car sickness works wonders. Ginger is also prescribed to chemotherapy patients to help reduce its side effects. It’s also found to help ease the pain of menstrual cycles due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Those anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are the key components in ginger's immune-boosting properties. Ginger has been shown to help ward off germs (due to having antibacterial and antiviral properties), and stop the growth of E. coli and viruses like RSV. Adding ginger to your diet, or any other antiinflammatory food or drink, can help enhance your immune system. Adding in other key ingredients like lemon or honey can also help boost immune response. My favorite way to get my daily dose of ginger is through a custom ginger shot, which are usually available at most local health stores. I also love to make ginger tea, especially during the chilly fall and winter months. Using grated or powdered ginger, I simply add hot water to honey, half of a fresh squeezed lemon, and a little turmeric on top for added benefits and flavor. Stir it all up for a warm drink on these fall days.
OUR GUIDE TO SKIN TIGHTENING COMBINING LASER TREATMENTS, INJECTABLES AND SKIN CARE BY SERINA JONES, LME, GIG HARBOR AESTHETICS
T
he newest kid on the block isn’t really a new kid, but it is the actual cosmetic approach which is the newly crowned king of all cosmetic procedures—the “combination treatment.” This is where the combined effects of more than one treatment are harnessed to maximize treatment outcomes and benefits. At Gig Harbor Aesthetics, we prefer and perform combination treatments to achieve optimal results. Combination therapy is not only more efficient in terms of time, but more often than not, the combination naturally allows for better results compared to each stand-alone treatment. The combination of injectables, lasers and skin care has a synergistic effect, boosting one another for remarkable results. The idea behind combining modalities is simple, as we just mentioned, but the bottom line is that it leads to more effective clinical results and increased patient satisfaction. Why let your treatments stand alone when your treatments can stand together and give you more efficacy and better results? What happens to us as we age? As we age, we lose volume in our skin and tissue, our texture changes due to past sun damage, and our overall skin tone dulls while our elastin and collagen diminish. These important structures serve as scaffolds, and the decline of volume leads to our face sagging and drooping, creating deep folds and lines. Facial aging typically starts in our 20s and 30s with the loss of essential volume, and the effects of past sun damage will appear as brown spots, facial vessels and textural changes. Simply put, aging isn’t just a one-dimensional effect, so our approach isn’t a one-way path. It’s a plan that includes different techniques to create balance, brightness, skin tightening and improved skin health.
Botox, Laser Treatments and Skin Care We take a synergistic approach to create a combined plan to reverse damage, smooth out texture and tighten skin. Sure, it’s great to be on a progressive home-care routine, but when you combine that with in-office treatments, you are getting optimal results with your skin health. Some of the most popular treatments to slow down the effects of aging are injectables, Radio Frequency Microneedling and Broad Band Light. Botox/Dysport and Dermal Fillers Botox and Dysport is a type of a neuromodulator that has received FDA approval for cosmetic treatments to reduce wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used to restore volume loss and support the skin to maintain its texture, volume and suppleness. Laser Treatments Radio Frequency Microneedling and BBL are incredibly effective at smoothing out texture, tightening the skin and improving overall skin tone and radiance. Through the use of these modalities, you will notice a visible improvement in the overall health of your skin. Skin Care Being on proper skin care for your particular skin is one of the most important parts of maintaining beautiful skin as well as correcting past damage. Our experts will guide you on what to use to achieve your skin goals. STANDING TOGETHER WITH ITS
COMMUNITY UNITED WAY COLLABORATES TO BRING CHANGE
BY RACHEL KELLY
U
nited Way has a mission to improve lives. They do this by seeking out the un-touched or un-talked about problems, using hands-on experience and research-backed initiatives to solve them. While United Way is a global nonprofit that functions all over the world, this doesn’t stop them from being involved personally within their separate communities. United Way believes that “to live better we must live United.” Which means that they don’t shy from working with their neighbors to address common issues, to ensure the health, education and financial stability for everyone. United Way’s worldwide mission is to “improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.” They do this by providing access to basic needs, such as food, shelter and financial stability. United Way also seeks to tackle transportation needs that inhibit access to those basic needs. Those resources additionally provide for health care and address domestic violence. The reach and scope of United Way as an international nonprofit is huge, but the focus is small. Funds and resources donated to a local United Way are distributed locally—to local organizations and local people. It’s no wonder then that

the United Way in Northern Idaho and Pierce County have individual local relationships, initiatives and partnerships. “Most people know United Way as a global organization. What most people don’t realize is that we are a network of smaller nonprofits,” says Mark Tucker, the executive director of United Way of North Idaho. This is especially important, because this means that United Way is operating according to local needs heard from local people and organizations. There are larger consistent methods that United Way in the Pacific Northwest uses as a whole to assess smaller community needs, such as ALICE. ALICE refers to the people within any community that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. ALICE works as a snapshot that allows each individual United Way to assess its community needs and address systemic issues that contribute to any shortages. “The great thing about a local structure with local volunteers is that we are able to identify and focus on our community’s greatest needs,” says Mark. The staff at this locality is relatively small, but their capacity for impact is increased through their partnerships. Through the ALICE system as reference, United Way in North Idaho has sought an understanding of

their unique community needs. This is the first step in any United Way venture and is especially true in the counties of North Idaho. According to ALICE, 41 percent of these communities are struggling to make ends meet. Through their local partnerships, they seek real solutions. Using both ALICE and local connections, North Idaho has been able to identify their community's greatest unmet need and proactively tends to that need through working across sectors. Because their partnerships with local agencies and providers have brought about a greater understanding of how to approach the issue, United Way in North Idaho is in a unique position. Not only are they able to provide research, but they are also able to step in with funding. Right now, North Idaho has identified childcare as a large unmet community need. Since childcare is the most expensive item in the budget for a family, it often is the barrier to getting parents back to work or working within the job that they prefer. “As we dug deeper into the issue, we realized that childcare workers are suffering themselves. Since teacher pay is so low, turnover is high, and lowering pay is not an option. With real estate having gone up dramatically, relocating for expansion is out of the question,” says Mark. What’s more, providing childcare benefits the community as a whole. Quality childcare prepares children for school readiness, which means that kindergartners are less likely to fall behind. Children who are not able to keep up in school, that do not receive the support they need, can often become delinquent. This, in turn, means that schools lose tax revenue. Loss of revenue, in turn, limits resources. Even more urgently, providing quality childcare supports businesses. When parents have consistent, affordable childcare, both parents are able to go back to work. Without this drain on their income, they are able to use more of their income to prepare for their future, invest in savings and pay off debt. Employers consistently see childcare as the top reason for tardiness or missed work. With the current shift in the economy and workforce, employers are beginning to change the way that they see their employees. In turn, this affects how they do business. With the current scarcity of employees, employers are looking to invest into childcare. Providing childcare in North Idaho helps with recruitment and retention, as well as fills a community need.
Funds and resources donated to a local United Way are distributed locally—to local organizations and local people. 62

To move out of the current childcare crisis, United Way of North Idaho approaches the problem using two strategies: funding and direct service programming. Using the Community Care Fund, United Way funds nonprofits that are already doing phenomenal work in the community. Direct service programming is a straightforward approach to address the crisis, where United Way develops its own services to answer needs where no services may be available. Examples include the Ready! For Kindergarten, Bank on North Idaho Financial literacy training, and the Family Scholarship program. Of course, United Way also uses collaboration. The Child Care Committee developed through $100,000 in funds from United Way in North Idaho. This committee has developed relationships with childcare providers, municipalities, educators and business leaders. Everyone is working together, focused on ending the childcare crisis. United Way in Pierce County just celebrated 100 hundred years of local service in their area. They are as historically a presence in the community as much as the theatres, train station and harbors. Celebrations have commenced throughout this last year, beginning with a food drive and birthday party in May. The ending celebrations finished on September 21 with a free virtual rally. The centennial celebration was part of an $8 million centennial campaign series. Amanda Westbrook of the CityLine talk show hosted the celebrations in style, bringing participants back through the rich history of United Way and culminating in a look at what’s in store for the future. Participants were treated to a first look at the Centennial video, as well as given an opportunity to learn trivia and win prizes. The spotlight has been on United Way in Pierce County as they continue to rejoice in their centennial year, but their everyday work in the community has not ceased. United Way’s long varied history in Pierce County began in 1921 with the Federation of Social Agencies. Partners in this building included local churches, the Red Cross and Tacoma Community Housing. Fundraising for 28 local charities and social agencies continued throughout the years. In 1951, $318,000 was raised and distributed, with close to $2,500 awarded to the Girl Scouts. In 1956, United Way’s fundraisers reached $1 million for the first time. In 1976, $2 million was reached for the first time, with $238,000 donated to its longtime partner The Red Cross. 1984 saw $4 million raised. In 1994, they broke $7 million. In 2000, Joanne Bamford introduced early learning as a community focus. In 2003, ABCD was established, which provided dental services for lowincome communities. For several years after this, United Way established itself as an advocate for early learning, with $5 million raised specifically for this. In 2013, 70 percent of United Way resources were allotted for prevention, such as early learning. They were able to fund prevention while still addressing present needs such as food, shelter and clothing. In 2016, two Centers for Strong Families were established. The centers continued to raise funds for services to families throughout the next few years, with large donations made by the Kaiser Permanente

Foundation. In 2019, the Center for Strong Families eventually established Resilient Pierce County, which focuses on Franklin Pierce and East Tacoma communities. Today, United Way in Pierce County has directed its focus on poverty, which they began in 2017. This was also the year that United Way held its first From Poverty to Possibilities Summit. Using the ALICE approach, a consistent research approach among all of the United Ways in the Pacific Northwest, UWPC has found out some information about present needs within the community. According to research, 23 percent of the families in Pierce County are ALICE families. This number has risen over the pandemic. That means every one in five families are struggling to make ends meet. United Way has done a lot in Pierce County over its 100-year-long residence, but recent research has shown that Pierce County is struggling with a unique shortage of employment combined with a decrease in housing. Everything United Way is doing in Pierce County is focused on addressing this problem. United Way in Pierce County has a goal of ending poverty for 15,000 families by 2028. They will continue to do this by partnering with local organizations and nonprofits that provide for community needs, 66

The international impact of United Way is a vast interconnection of communities around the world. Their projects include access to health care in Korea, books for children in Australia, and financial stability in Denver, USA. Hundreds of thousands of people receive these services and financial aid. Many local organizations receive grants. This has only been possible through unity. Yu m my. ON E-POT M E AL S TO THE R ES CUE The secrets of one-pot cooking by RACHEL KELLY
F
all evokes a feeling of nostalgia, the perfect sweater weather. With the kids back in school, we find our schedules cramped with evenings of catchup, weekends of last-minutes, and a bustle toward bedtime. Fall cooking at its best is made in one pot with very few dishes. With one-pot cooking, the cleanup is easy, the product healthy and the cost minimal. Here is a step-by-step guide for making your own one-pot meals. Step One: Create your flavor base. Classic one-pot dishes require very little prep and are best slowly cooked throughout the day. The general soup or stew requires a selection of root vegetables to add depth and flavor. This is possible because fall plants prepare for winter by storing sugar in their roots. Chopping up and sautéing root vegetables forces them to release their sugars into the oil, providing a base for a rich and savory flavor profile. For Italian dishes (think red meat sauce and minestrone), chop up celery, onion, carrot and garlic. For soups or sauces that are finished with cream, use the same base. For spicy meals, such as curry or chili (green, red or white), skip the carrots and instead use mild or spicy peppers (seeds removed). As you continue to experiment with various flavor profiles, you will figure out more and more what you like best. In general, however, bases of soups and stews are made of carrots, onions, garlic, celery (or celery root) and/or peppers. Choose what you want, chop up, and sauté in oil until fragrant. Step Two: Choose your protein. If you’re a meat eater, your protein would be meat. Obviously. But! If you are vegetarian, this would be beans or quinoa. Of course, there’s no hard and fast rule that restricts you from doing all or none of these things. There are some basic principles here though that apply to protein. Beans must be soaked in salt water overnight, but canned beans can be added right in. When using meat, choose meats that are fatty and boney—no boring chicken breast here. Something low in fat that is simmered in liquid amounts to bland, because fat is delicious. For meats think ham hocks, sausage, chicken thighs and T-bone steak. After you’re done simmering your root veggies

until fragrant, remove or scoot to the edge of the pan. Then salt your meat (if needed), and sear in the same pot until brown. The meat doesn’t have to be cooked through. Step Three: Now for the liquid. Whatever liquid you add can be twofold, meaning that it could be both wine (used to get all the brown goop off the bottom of the pan) and water. Or, you could have both broth and tomatoes (as seen in minestrone). For stews, make sure that the liquid only just covers the top, as much will cook off leaving a thick mixture. For dishes with beans, use a little extra water. Those beans will soak up all that excess. Use broth if you’re using a protein that doesn’t have a whole bunch of flavor, such as beans, quick-cooking sausage or low-fat chicken. Use water when making stews or sauces with proteins that are packed with flavor, such as T-bone steak, beef tips or ham hocks. After sautéing your root veggies and separately browning your meat, put it all in the pot and cover with liquid. Let simmer on low (very low) or put all ingredients in the crockpot. It’s done cooking when the protein is cooked through. Step Four: The finisher. Finishing your dish is done at the end for things that only take a few minutes to cook. This can be a filler, such as noodles (five-minute cook time) or rice (20-minute cook time). Or it can be a garnish, such as rosemary or oregano. Or the finisher can be added once the heat is turned off, such as a cream or a squeeze of lemon. Always taste after finishing to see if the dish needs more salt. 72 72
|
GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
Your finisher will be contingent upon your preference and what you think tastes best. This is an opportunity for creativity. With these simple methods as your guide, you are on route to make all kinds of various dishes. My personal favorite one-pot meals include White Tuscan Minestrone and Green Chili. White Tuscan Minestrone starts with sautéing carrots, celery, onion and garlic. White bean and chicken/vegetable broth are added once root veggies are fragrant. Also add uncooked sausage here if you want to liven up the broth a bit. Simmer until beans are cooked through. Finish with rosemary sprig and a squeeze of lemon. Green Chili is made by first sautéing onion until soft and sweet. While the onions sauté, lay out green peppers (pablano, jalapeño, etc.) and tomatillos (or green tomatoes) on a sheet pan (cookie sheet). Slide under the broiler. Once blackened, peel off the skin. Set aside. Salt and sear fatty pieces of pork in the onions as they continue to brown. Then, chop up skinned tomatoes and peppers. Add onion/tomatillo mixture to the pot. Cover with chicken broth. Simmer until meat falls apart. Finish with rice and cilantro. Serve with tortillas or eat by itself. Now that you have your guidelines, and your examples, get ready to make something of your own! It’s time to get cooking.

A BEGINNER’S BAKING GUIDE WHERE TO START TO FIND SUCCESS AS A BRAND-NEW BAKER by TAYLOR SHILLAM
Beginner’s Baking Guide It’s autumn, and for many, enjoying a cozy pastime helps ease the transition to cooler, shorter days. Aside from the comforting treats that come as a result, baking can be a comforting form of both mental and physical therapy. The concentration required to follow a recipe and carefully measure ingredients, mixed with the creativity that comes with a chance to experiment with flavors, makes baking a unique activity that is often considered more than just a hobby. If you’re new to the realm of baking, there are a few steps you can take to find success as a beginning baker. Once you have a few key elements down, including starting with the right tools and techniques, you’ll feel like an expert in no time! 74 74

GIG GIG HARBOR HARBOR LIVING LIVING LOCAL LOCAL
Where to Start: Baking Equipment Set yourself up for success with quality baking tools. The right equipment will make your road to becoming a seasoned baker much sweeter, as quality bakeware makes for easier cleanups and more evenly cooked results. Invest in quality, non-stick bakeware. A non-stick or silicone baking mat will help you skip the sticky baking sprays and endless rolls of parchment paper—plus save you from cleaning up a sticky mess later. There are non-stick options for just about every piece of baking equipment, from muffin tins to cake pans, so if you’re watching your budget, start by investing in the pieces you’ll use most often. Make sure your measuring tools are in order, including measuring cups, a set of teaspoons and tablespoons, and a quality liquid measuring cup. A set of dependable, accurate, easy-to-use measuring tools comes in handy not just for baking but for recipes of all kinds.

During those first few recipes, give yourself plenty of time and grace.
While your remaining baking equipment will depend on your needs, tastes and budget, many experts advocate for an investment in a standing mixer. Compared to a handheld beater, standing mixers ensure an easy, even blend of your ingredients. It helps you expend less energy and save time, with the ability to multitask while your ingredients mix away. A KitchenAid isn’t required—there are plenty of budget-friendly options that produce similar results. Use High-Quality Ingredients Investing in high-quality ingredients where you can will yield a noticeable difference in taste. For example, there’s a difference between pure vanilla extract and artificial vanilla extract—the real deal will produce a stronger, more authentic flavor. 76

As much as you can, look for high-quality ingredients to produce the best results. Pure extracts and real spices might be pricier, but a little bit goes a long way, and the results are guaranteed to be noticed. Some experts advocate for additional ingredient upgrades like swapping table salt for sea salt to produce a more complex flavor profile, or using browned butter for more tender, flaky results. Choose the upgrades that are best for your specific recipe, baking interests and budget. Take your recipe with you when shopping for ingredients, so you’ll know exactly how much you need. Set the Stage When your equipment is purchased and your ingredients ready, it’s time to begin. Set the stage by placing all ingredients on the counter and thoroughly reading your recipe for key details. Read the recipe to completion before you pour or mix anything. You’ll have a better idea of timing, measurements and techniques needed to complete the recipe.

Look for the phrase “room temperature”—you won’t want to ignore that instruction. Temperature is a more critical component producing your desired outcome than you may expect. Room temperature supports a proper emulsion, which promotes an ideal texture in the finished product. Allow any refrigerated ingredients listed that are called to be room temperature to sit out on the counter for some time before you begin. If your recipe requires any ingredients to be “warmed,” be careful to keep that ingredient warm—not hot. Mixing in hot ingredients will often wreak havoc on the quality of the result and the chemical reactions between other ingredients. Keep any and all warmed ingredients in the recipe lukewarm at best. When you’re ready to start mixing ingredients, follow the recipe in order. As tempting as it may be to get creative and experiment, most recipes are trusted for a reason. As you further develop your baking skills, you’ll have the experience and knowledge base to successfully experiment in the future. Take Time to Enjoy the Process Like any skill, art or hobby, baking takes time to learn. Don’t rush—allow yourself to be patient and learn from your mistakes. During those first few recipes, give yourself plenty of time and grace. If you’re brand new to baking, you can save yourself a bit of stress by starting with a simple recipe. Chocolate chip cookies, brownies and muffins are all straightforward and give beginning bakers a great starting foundation. Take time to enjoy the taste tests along the way! Becoming a skilled, comfortable baker doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, and practicing is key. You can keep baking practice varied and fun, both by trying new recipes and perfecting familiar classics. Start simple, and start today—as we head into the holiday season, you'll be ready to contribute fresh, expertly baked treats to your family gatherings and festive events. After all, one of the best, most rewarding aspects of developing your baking skills is sharing them! All you have to do now is choose that first recipe and begin. 78

TRAVEL AND TASTE A Food and Wine Weekend in Charming Woodinville, Washington By Marguerite Cleveland
A
midst the Sammamish River Valley sits the charming town of Woodinville. With over 130 tasting rooms, Woodinville, Washington, is a wine drinker’s heaven. There are four distinct wine districts each with their own vibe. If you want to learn more about wine production, head to the Warehouse District for a behind-the-scenes look. For city lovers, the Downtown District has lots of new tasting rooms, breweries, shopping and restaurants. The West Valley District is situated on the west side of the Sammamish River and has a slower, more relaxed atmosphere with the tasting rooms spread out. The landmark Hollywood School is where the Hollywood District gets its name. For a food and wine weekend, Hollywood is where you want to be with a Conde Nast gold-rated resort, destination restaurants and more than 40 tasting rooms within walking distance. Where to Stay For a high-end super luxurious stay, the Willows Lodge is a gold-rated Conde Nast resort on 5 beautifully landscaped acres within walking distance of the Hollywood District. The private patios overlook the peaceful gardens dominated by old-growth trees. Truly a special place and worth the splurge. It can be challenging to find lodging in Woodinville, especially during busy fall weekends. Just a 10-minute drive, the Hilton Garden Inn Redmond Town Center is more like a boutique hotel with its modern, upscale décor. It is a great option, and if you don’t feel like driving, there are a variety of transport options on the Woodinville Wine Country website.

WITH OVER 130 TASTING ROOMS, WOODINVILLE, WASHINGTON, IS A WINE DRINKER’S HEAVEN.
Where to Eat So many great choices from charcuterie boards at wineries to multicourse fine dining can all be found in the Hollywood District. For fine dining, The Barking Frog elevates the farm-to-table experience with creative menu items and gorgeous presentations. Executive Chef Bobby Moore and team are inspired by fresh, local ingredients and the cultural diversity of the Pacific Northwest. Make sure to try the Penn Cove Mussels in a flavorful curry broth. Divine! Heritage Restaurant is chef and owner Breanna Beike’s baby. She serves up elevated comfort food moderately priced at this local favorite. Her food is seriously good. Her Citrus Honey-Brined Half Chicken is a work of art. The roast chicken’s crisp, caramel-hued skin is served with in-season vegetables, cheddar whipped potatoes and a rich, red wine-enhanced chicken jus. Foodie nirvana is a wine bar with great food. The Purple Café & Wine Bar offers an extensive wine list. The wine flights are themed small pours of three different wines; just enough, and you can pair one with each course. The café is known for its Baked Brie, which is a wonder of gooey melted cheese smothered with apricot, caramelized onions and candied walnuts encased in pastry. It is served with fruit and crackers. The dine-in menu has a wide variety of starters that are perfect to share with your table and make a meal out of it. This gives you the opportunity to try a variety of food and wine pairings. What to Do Frankly, visitors come to Woodinville to drink wine, so that should be the focus of your visit. With 130-plus tasting rooms, it can be overwhelming. Plan to visit one in the morning followed by a great lunch, then visit two in the afternoon. In the Hollywood District you can easily fit in more with GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

so many wineries right next to each other, but it will give you a much less relaxed experience. Also, with COVID-19 protocols, it is not as easy to just drop in and taste. Research prior to your visit and make reservations for the places you want to try to avoid disappointment. Here are three worth trying. Dusted Valley is a family owned business creating the American Dream. With a dentist in the family, wine-stained teeth have inspired the names of both wines and the Stained Tooth Wine Club Society. Good wine grows in the vineyards, and Dusted Valley’s sustainable farming practices are creating excellent fruit. The 2018 Stained Tooth Syrah is a standout with its rich purple hue. It is a gorgeous wine of 97 percent Syrah with a 3 percent hint of Viognier. Lauren Ashton Cellars is in the Apple Farm Village, a darling collection of historic cottages that are nestled in beautiful gardens, which give outdoor space to the tasting rooms. Kit Singh, owner of Lauren Ashton Cellars, is a gifted winemaker who crafts beautifully nuanced wines with his own take on the French style of winemaking. Singh makes both red and white wines, but he produces a greater variety of whites than most Washington winemakers. For those who love white wine, you will have a difficult time choosing your favorite. A unique wine worth trying is the 2020 Roussanne, as Singh is one of the few in Washington who creates a wine from this complex white grape varietal, which is indigenous to the Rhone Valley of France. Its delicate flavor pairs perfectly with shellfish. The tasting room for Obelisco Estate is also at the Apple Farm Village. General manager and winemaker Ken Abbott carries on the legacy of his uncle, famed winemaker Doug Long, while continuing to work with Aunt Betsy Long. They are known for their big, bold Red Mountain (AVA) reds, and you are going to want to take home a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon or a red blend to age for a special occasion. Abbott also makes some unique wines such as a Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is 100 percent juice unlike most Rosés which have water added. The winery staff have dubbed it the “Brose” due to its big fruit flavor while remaining 86

dry. It is the “white wine” for red wine drinkers. Another unusual wine is the Late Harvest Cabernet, which is sweet enough to be a dessert wine. At the end of the harvest season, Abbott and all the staff pick the final grapes of the season for this wine. Before visiting Woodinville, take the time to visit the Woodinville Wine Country website and view the event calendar. There is usually something going on every weekend. A fun activity is Yoga and Wine at Gard Vintners Woodinville. You’ll take a yoga class which is a mixture of Hatha and Vinyasa followed by a wine tasting flight or glass of wine. On Friday evenings, check the schedule for happy hours with live music at a tasting room. If you feel like getting some outside time, walk the Sammamish River Trail, which, as its name suggests, follows the river. Insider Tip: If you are new to wine tasting, make your first stop the iconic Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. This gorgeous chateau hosts multiple tasting rooms and offers a variety of wine experiences and classes which will increase your wine education.

Fall at the Farm
A
s we gaze off at the beautiful waters that make our maritime city a true paradise to call home, it can be easy to forget that inland you can find numerous working farms right here in Gig Harbor! As harvest season is upon us, and farmers finish gathering the fruits of their labors, take a day to visit one—or more—of these local farms, patronizing these hard-working men and women while enjoying a beautiful fall day outdoors. From Wild Handful Farm, Pattersons Farm Market and Crescent Valley Lavender Farm, to Artondale Farm, Butler's Farm, FireWater Farm and more, a visit to one of these farms will inspire a true appreciation for the passion these folks demonstrate to produce a beautiful bounty to provide for their families and share with those in their community.

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO
94
|
Explore by Water
Have a Ball
Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.
Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.
Support Local
Make Friends
Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.
Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.
Tip a Glass
Take a Look Back
Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.
Share a Plate
Tee Up
Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.
Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.
Walk on the Wild Side
Capture the Moment
Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.
In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

• Preheat oven to 350˚F. In a medium bowl, add eggs, coconut oil (coconut oil may be warm but not hot, as you don't want the eggs to scramble by adding the oil), pumpkin and brown sugar. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, combine all the ingredients until smooth. Set aside. • In another medium bowl, combine almond flour, baking soda, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice and salt. Stir together and make sure you get all the clumps out. • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix well with a spatula until fully combined. • Line a 9x13 pan with parchment paper to prevent the bars from sticking to the pan. Pour the batter into the pan. Bake for 30 minutes. Let cool completely on the counter. • Spread the frosting evenly over the bars and sprinkle bacon bits over the frosting. Enjoy!

LET'S
WRITE
CONFERENCE BRINGS ASPIRING WRITERS, PROFESSIONALS TOGETHER BY COLIN ANDERSON
P
erhaps you’ve jotted down a story line or have the idea for the next great “who done it” novel. Putting pen to paper on your idea can be a challenge not just for aspiring writers but those who seek to make storytelling their career. Whether you’re published or just getting started on your writing journey, the seventh annual Write in the Harbor Conference will have tips, tools, networking and advice that will help bring your ideas to life. Put on by Tacoma Community College, the event will once again be run virtually this year. It will cover two days, Friday, November 5, and Saturday, November 6. Friday is an evening workshop that runs from 6 until 8:30pm. Saturday is an all-day event which kicks off at 9am and runs until 4pm. The keynote speaker this year is Bronwyn Scott, who is celebrating her 13th year writing historical romances with Harlequin Mills and Boon, with over 65 books in publication. Her latest release is a Christmas book entitled Lord Tresham’s Tempting Rival, which came out October 1, 2021. Among her works are the 2018 Christmas release Dancing with the Duke's Heir, which was a RITA finalist for best

novella, and her 2019 novella An Invitation to a Cornish Christmas: Unwrapping His Festive Temptation was a 2020 Booksellers Best Finalist. She is also a professor of Communication Studies at Pierce College. Scott is one of 10 writers and authors scheduled to speak during the two-day event. Others bring various backgrounds in works of fiction, short story, humor and fantasy, as well as freelance and technical writing. Each will bring their unique perspective and style and will be available for questions throughout the conference. These presenters all started somewhere and are eager to share many of the tips and techniques that helped them develop professional writing skills and become published authors. Registration is open at TacomaCC.edu. Once you register, you’ll have access to each session. If you miss one, all sessions will be recorded, and attendees can access those recordings after the conference as well.

With community safety in mind, they have opted to move away from an in-person event to a virtual one, allowing the community to come together over a two-week period (rather than just one evening) and join Harbor Hope Center online for inspiring stories and highlights of how the center, and you, are changing lives of students and families. The Fall Giving Campaign is mission critical, and individuals, businesses and community organizations are encouraged to give generously and make sure there are no neighbors with unmet needs. To inquire about sponsorships, please email info@harborhopecenter.org or contact Melissa Starmer, administrative coordinator, at 253.225.1805. For daily updates, find Harbor Hope Center on Facebook, follow along on Instagram and visit HarborHopeCenter.org.

2021 HOMESTEAD HOPERAISER

RATTLE DEM BONES
The community is invited to join Homestead Community at their annual HopeRaiser. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 21, and will be held at the Best Western Wesley Inn (6575 Kimball Drive) from 7 to 8:30am. Enjoy a morning featuring breakfast and silent auction, with all proceeds going to provide hope and homes for youth living in foster care. Tickets, which are $40 each, are now available online at EventBrite.com. Visit HomesteadCommunity.org and click on "Fundraising Events" for additional details and for link to purchase tickets.
Scheduled for Halloween day, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation will once again present Rattle Dem Bones Halloween Group Bike Ride and Costume Contest at the Kimball Park and Ride in Gig Harbor. There will be a "staggered start" bike ride, followed by an outdoor party, with music and prizes for best costumes at the finish line. Casual riders can enjoy a cruise along Gig Harbor's family friendly Cushman Trail, while those up for a challenge will not be disappointed by Monster Hills and Son of Monster loops, which go through downtown Gig Harbor and into rural Pierce and Kitsap counties. Come in costume and have your picture taken by their official photographer! Prizes will be awarded in several categories. All proceeds benefit the Community Recreation Fund, which helps make participation in sport and recreation programs possible for all kids. To register, visit GHF.info/RDB2021. For additional details, visit GigHarborFoundation.org/Rattle-dem-Bones/about.
* Please note, as of press time, these events were still scheduled to take place as planned. Due to the continuing pandemic, there is the possibility that event schedules may change or events canceled completely. Be sure to visit event websites to stay up to date with current information.
