alk inside the double doors of Jalapeños on 2nd Avenue in downtown Sandpoint and you’re immediately greeted by a color-splashed dining room, a fish tank that’s home to a local legend named Mango, and a bar where Bing Crosby once sat. At Jalapeños, employees are like family, and customers are like close friends. Chances are if you live in Sandpoint you’ve stopped in the local favorite Mexican eatery, sampled some of their authentic California-Mexican cuisine, and maybe even had a signature margarita or two served up by Kari the bartender, who’s been there for 15 years and creates all of the traditional favorites—including a fun twist here and there, like house-infused habanero vodka and tequila. What many people may not know is that Jalapeños’ history goes back almost three decades, and the building it occupies carries around a century of memories and character, some of which still remain to this day. Wander through the main dining area of Jalapeños and glance down at the wooden floor—once a basketball court for the old Elks Club that originally occupied the building. As you round the corner into the bar you’ll catch a glimpse of the restaurant mascot, Mango, an 18-year-old blood parrot cichlid that many mistake for a large goldfish. She’s been around practically since Jalapeños moved into the space over 20 years ago, and a lot of love, pampering and recently a diet of frozen peas have kept her delighting guests much past the average life expectancy for a blood parrot, which is seven to 10 years. Chet and Shari French first opened Jalapeños on April 15, 1993, on Cedar Street

in what was formerly the old bootery and Fabulous 50s Fountain. It was one of the first Mexican restaurants to pop up on Sandpoint’s food scene, and it was packed every single day with a line out the door. “I was a customer back then. It was like something new Sandpoint had never seen before,” remembers Dave Vermeer, who now co-owns Jalapeños with local Justin Dick, but at the time was the manager of the Coldwater Creek wine bar.
“We put more emphasis on caring for our employees and the relationship we have with them, because it’s more than just a job here for us. That’s how it’s always been.”
“We were packed from open to close every day, people lined up out the door and down the sidewalk. It was so fun!” laughs Chelsea Page, the current manager of Jalapeños who started when the restaurant first opened. If there’s anybody who knows everything about Jalapeños, it’s Chelsea. For 28 years, through two moves and new ownership, she’s stuck with Jalapeños, because it is family for her.
Dave and Justin took over the reigns in 2014. From the start they were set on keeping the entire staff and preserving the beloved character of the restaurant, something Chet and Shari were careful about when they sold the place. They didn’t want to just sell it to anyone.
Jalapeños also frequently gives back to the community in different ways— it’s hard to find some cause they haven’t supported. In 2019, Dave and Justin received 167 donation requests—over three a week. They offer their support to as many as possible, in whatever way they can.
“We took every single person on as they were. We knew nothing about them, but we just felt in good faith that was the good thing to do,” explains Dave. To this day, their mentality remains the same. “We put more emphasis on caring for our employees and the relationship we have with them, because it’s more than just a job here for us. That’s how it’s always been.”
Like the staff, Jalapeños’ customers are very loyal and return every week for their favorite item on the menu. A woman and her two sons make the trek out from Deer Park religiously three times a week to eat there, and last Christmas she brought in an envelope of money with $30 for each employee. It’s a caring attitude that defines many of Jalapeños’ customers.
Besides Chelsea, three of Jalapeños’ staff go back almost 20 years, and the majority have been there for more than four years. When it comes time for a new hire, they are careful to find someone who’s a good fit for the restaurant family, but they are always willing to give people a chance.
“So many of us have worked here for so long and we have so many regular customers—I mean we have people that come in here every single day—that they feel so comfortable with us. It’s not like they’re just our customers anymore, they’re our friends,” says Chelsea.
Calvin used to come in each week and sit at the bar for a drink and dinner. After some conversation, Chelsea found out he wasn’t getting the hours he needed at Jack in the Box, and was living in a tent out by the frisbee golf course, riding his bike in the snow to and from work. He used a portion of his limited earnings each week for that meal at Jalapeños and some time in the warmth with friendly service. It was the middle of winter, and Jalapeños offered him a job. Shortly after, they helped him find a rental house, paying the money for him to get in, and letting him slowly pay it off from his paycheck little by little.
Head into Jalapeños, and chances are you’ll leave happy and experience great service. From the bussers’ and servers’ smiling faces to Mango’s friendly greeting, it’s a convivial space where everyone feels welcome. Even the resident ghost is friendly.
He started as a dishwasher, and now he washes dishes, busses tables and prep cooks. For Dave and Chelsea it’s an incredible success story and example of the good people who sometimes just need a break. “We feel like it comes back,” explains Dave. If the restaurant ever needs anything, Calvin is there without question. “Being in a position where you can do something like that—you can give people that just need a change, give them a chance—makes us feel really good,” adds Chelsea.
Yes … ghost. There’s not an employee who hasn’t had some strange interaction with the spirit. From random buckets toppling over, to faucets being turned off, doors swinging when no one is around and the paper towel dispensers in the bathroom motion activating during the dark, closed hours when they’re not in use, it’s obvious it’s not only the guests who love Jalapeños. So next time you find yourself on 2nd Avenue, head on in, say hello to Mango, saunter up to the bar that Bing Crosby once sat at when it was the Elks, and enjoy some first-class service, delicious eats and a house favorite—the Mexican Painkiller.

C R E AT E YO U R O U T D O O R DREAM SPACE FOR THE SPRING AND SUMMER SEASON B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E
W
armer days, bright sunshine and longer daylight hours have us all longing for T-shirt weather and some time spent outdoors. As the sun starts to shine brighter and the lake begins to rise, we’re all eagerly looking for the days we can decamp to our backyard for some relaxing hours spent out of doors. But if your space is looking a bit worn from the winter, you just moved into a new space, or you haven’t had the time to create an outdoor space for your spring and summer enjoyment, now is the perfect time to tackle some outdoor projects to create that perfect front or backyard. So while you’re dusting off the patio set and pondering a spring garden, here are some other ways to help make the most of your space—from some small improvements to more large-scale projects. And if you’re in the market to sell, some outdoor improvements matter when it comes to helping you get the most for your home— even in a market as hot as this one. Take the Living Outdoors These days, we’re spending more and more time at home, and when it comes to spring and summer (and even sometimes the colder months), most people want to spend as many of those hours outdoors as possible. According to an NKBA membership survey, there’s been a 65 percent increase in overall outdoor living project interest in recent years. People are looking to update their outdoor spaces to more functionality, and for many that means outdoor kitchens. While this is a large project when it comes to improving your backyard, 76 percent of those surveyed were planning outdoor kitchen areas. Patios and decks, screened-in porches and three-season rooms are also popular, especially in places like Sandpoint, where we want a little added protection from the seasonal weather while enjoying the sun and view of the outdoors. Some of the most requested features for outdoor living spaces—and ones that are relatively simple yet transform your space to an all (or most) season extension of your living space—include expanded and upgraded seating options like outdoor sofas and lounge chairs, fireplaces and firepits, and additional weather protection like overhead coverings. Something as simple as adding a firepit can extend your outdoor use well into the autumn months (and even winter and spring), and anchor your seating area for an inviting space that doubles as the perfect entertaining spot.

Easy, Small Improvements Improving your backyard space doesn’t need to involve adding a kitchen or pool. Sometimes it’s the simplest improvements that go the furthest in creating a space you love and want to spend your time in. Creative planter ideas are a fun way to spruce up a dull yard and can be quite useful if you’re dealing with a small space. Look to items you may not usually consider for planters: baskets, buckets, antique pieces and even old furniture. Just make sure it has proper drainage in the bottom for your plants to thrive. You can even add a little paint here and there to creative planters to make them your own and add a little splash of color to your space. Think vertical when you’re planning your space. Hanging plants, hanging chairs and lighting will transform your space and create a backyard paradise you won’t want to leave. If you have older cushions that still work, but you want a little refresh, consider recovering instead of replacing them. And don’t forget rugs aren’t only for the indoors. An outdoor rug will add the final touch to complete your space and extend that indoor feeling of comfort outside. Finally, put your outdoor space to use. Besides creating a space to entertain and relax, use raised beds, or even pots and planters, to grow some items that will save you a trip to the store. Herbs, veggies and flowers are a great use of space, and often don’t require a lot of room or work. If you have the space, some fruit trees provide a beautiful backdrop and a homegrown treat during the right season, and can fill some of that empty space to create a picturesque landscape. Add on to Your Space Cottages or accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are becoming more and more popular, particularly as available living space in our small town seems to become more and more expensive and difficult to find. If your space and zoning allow, building a small ADU on your extra land is a great way to make the most of your space. Backyard cottages or ADUs can serve as additional functional space to extend the living area, as a guest house, or temporarily as a home for elderly relatives or adult children living with you. They also are in hot demand as rentals and can serve as a side source of income, easily paying for themselves.

If a backyard cottage or ADU isn’t in the cards, even something like a pergola or outdoor covered or semicovered space can double as an outdoor living space where you can entertain, relax and soak up the warmer months.

CHANGES TO UPDATE YOUR YARD AND ENJOY IT OVER THE SPRING AND SUMMER, NOW IS
making your front and backyards show their best. If you decide not to sell, then you’ll have a new and improved space to enjoy yourself! When it comes to resale, curb appeal is everything. Make your first impression count by cleaning up the yard, trimming any trees or bushes, planting some flowers, and making sure your lawn is green if you have one—even if that means replacing it! If your front door is less than inviting, paint, repair or replace it—it matters more than you think. Some simple things can make a big difference and really catch the eye, like spreading fresh mulch, cleaning up and tidying the yard and the outside of your home (cleaning or painting dirty or old siding will really freshen a place up), and adding a few vibrant annuals to catch the eye. Focus on upgrades that aren’t too costly but make the space feel inviting and livable, and increase the perception of more living space. Set up your outdoor space to feel like a true entertainment area with seating, lighting and enough privacy to enjoy the space without being noticed by all of your neighbors. One of the more costly items that you might consider is adding or repairing a deck or patio. The return on investment is often worth it, and you’ll be able to enjoy your outdoor space even more in the meantime. Whether you’re looking for a complete overhaul of your outdoor space, or simply ready to make a few simple changes to update your yard and enjoy it over the spring and summer, now is the perfect time to start, so when the temperatures start to hit the 70s, you’ll be ready and waiting to head outdoors and enjoy the season while it lasts.

t’s no secret that Idaho is one of the fastest growing states in the country. People are coming here for a myriad of reasons, but whatever the reason, the influx of new residents is having a dynamic impact on the real estate market. “Right now, we are in a seller’s market,” explained Jackie Suarez, an Associate Broker with Century21 Riverstone. “Low interest rates, people retiring or working remotely, and folks seeking more rural settings continue to create more demand than our market can supply.” With such a tight market, and such low inventory, some are turning to a custom build as an alternative. Many are finding, however, that this segment is also proving very costly due to a number of factors. “As is true of any industry, the economic reality of supply and demand is a huge factor,” said Ramey Construction Assistant Project Manager and Marketing Director Doug Lutz. “The housing shortage in areas like our own, combined with the flight of folks leaving big cities, has contributed to this demand in a big way.” Ramey Construction builds commercial properties as well as custom homes and remodels. Doug describes the demand as intense and at a frenetic pace, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While some potential homebuyers are finding builders booked out often months in advance, many are deciding to take out equity in their home to pursue remodel projects themselves. There are all kinds of instructional videos available online for those wanting to add new flooring or tiling, a backsplash, a backyard patio or landscape. In response to these DIYers, big box chains are using their massive purchasing power to move to the front of the supply chain line, which in turn drives up material costs for smaller construction outfits.
If you are considering a custom build, be prepared to be in a near equally competitive market as existing home sales and also for a longer wait time than you might expect. It’s important to do a lot of information gathering before making this type of commitment. “If you’re just beginning the process of finding the perfect land to build on, it’s important to understand accessibility, available utilities, zoning, wetlands and geography, and, of course, identify your budget and timeline to see if this is the right place and time,” recommended Jackie.
Jackie keeps in close communications with several of these local contractors and doesn’t expect to see this markup change soon. “I’ve been told to expect higher pricing and delays not only in building supplies but appliances, generators and furnishings as well,” she said. “Some of our friends in the financial and construction industry have indicated that it may be a while before we see a
Doug agrees and is hopeful that people don’t get caught up in the rush and stuck with overpaying for inferior quality. “Any builder worth his or her salt will help their clients set realistic expectations, be transparent about costs and offer what help they can to value-engineer costs in a way that benefits the client, not the pocketbook of the contractor.”

MARKET REPORT All across Northern Idaho, the real estate market remains in favor of the seller. With historically low interest rates, an influx of people moving to the area, and very low inventory, competition for homes at all price levels is fierce. If you are considering a move, a new build, or perhaps using the equity in your home to make improvements, it’s important to seek out the advice of local professionals. Whether it’s a licensed Realtor, certified lender, or licensed and bonded contractor; be sure to gather all the professional opinions and expertise you can before making these important decisions.

APRIL fun fact
The Most Beautiful Small Town in America
M
ost people who have found their way to Sandpoint know the city’s most recent claim to fame ... it’s the reason many first heard about Sandpoint and decided to visit or move here in the first place. In 2011, our small town on the lake made national news by being named America’s Most Beautiful Small Town by Rand McNally and USA Today. The decision came after “The McNavigators” stopped in Sandpoint on their trip to six cities across the U.S. that had been voted in by readers and followers across the country for their exceptional beauty and offerings. The team duo came, they explored, and Sandpoint won them over. To those of us who live here, it’s no surprise. Nothing is more beautiful than a sunrise or sunset over the lake in our small town, or swishing down the slopes with the view of Lake Pend Oreille below. Curious which cities we were up against? Baker City, Oregon; Coral Gables, Florida; Franklin, Tennessee; Marco Island, Florida; and Pacific, California, joined Sandpoint in the top six.

WORLD - CLASS REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL
T
REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Our market continues to favor Sellers. Good news for Buyers – Spring is here, and more properties are entering the market. Mortgage lenders are still offering extremely low rates. Is now a good time to buy or sell? I always say when the time is right for you, the time is right. Sellers, you currently have the advantage of high demand and relatively low supply. Rely on professionals, price your home or land accordingly and know your next step. Buyers be ready. Cash offers tend to take priority in this market. Approach your home search with proof of your purchasing ability and keep an open mind to a property’s long-term potential. One thing is certain - our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same. God, Family and Relationships.
Contact Jackie Suarez, your local expert for help with your real estate needs. What Jackie’s clients are saying “Jackie is a pro hands down. Very clear and good communicaaon.
