Why? Because we’re built fo Use your financial strategy like GPS
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Caleb Bowman
So what’s important W hen you’re driving these days, it’s pretty hard to get lost because your smartphone’s Global Positioning System (GPS) can get you just about anywhere. And as an investor, you can have a similar experience by employing another directional tool—a personalized financial strategy.
You’re certainly familiar with those thick red lines your GPS shows to indicate traffic slowdowns ahead. And while they’re annoying, they’re also useful in cautioning you that you may arrive at your destination later than you had originally planned. Your financial strategy can also express “warnings” about events that could hinder you from reaching your goals. These obstacles might include an illness or disability that could keep you out of work for a while, or the need for some type of longterm care, such as a nursing home stay or the services of a home health aide. Your financial strategy can not only identify these threats, but with the guidance of a financial professional, suggest potential solutions.

To begin with, your GPS pinpoints your exact location at the start of your trip—in other words, it tells you where you are. And when you create a financial strategy, your first step is to evaluate your current situation by answering these types of questions: What are your assets? How much do you earn? How much do you owe? How much are you contributing to your IRA, 401(k) or other retirement accounts? Once you’ve got a clear picture of your finances, you’ll be ready to begin your journey toward your long-term goals.

"WE’VE TAKEN EVERYTHING WE’VE LEARNED TO LOVE, AND HATE, FROM THE HOPE, PONDERAY AND COEUR D’ALENE LOCATIONS AND DESIGNED THE ATHOL LOCATION TO BE EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE FOR OUR GUESTS AND PRODUCTIVE FOR OUR TEAM."

I
t was almost too good to be true when Chad and Meggie Foust pulled into the parking lot at Holiday Shores Marina back in October 2010. The couple had learned there was a waterfront restaurant opportunity in Hope, Idaho, and made the trip out from Seattle to check it out. Chad had worked in the restaurant industry for many years, and this was the chance to finally run their own restaurant while raising their son Lou in a beautiful small town close to family and friends. The family moved to Sandpoint in March 2011, and Sweet Lou’s was born. Today, the Fousts are celebrating the soon-to-open third location of Sweet Lou’s, serving up some delicious homemade American fare with a heart for the communities they live, work and serve. Meggie recently served on the board of the Panhandle Animal Shelter, while Chad has been active on the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce board and North Idaho College Foundation board. Both have volunteered for numerous nonprofits and organizations including Distinguished Young Women, Sandpoint Little League, the Long Bridge Swim and the Sandpoint Sharks Swim Team. Q. What’s the story behind Sweet Lou’s, and how did you get started in the business? A. The first Sweet Lou’s Restaurant—named after our son—opened in April 2011. Our concept is simple—we offer our favorite homemade American fare dishes, served with a good drink, while welcoming the entire family in for lunch or dinner. Sweet Lou’s pretty much covers the bases at our house—good food, good drink and a good game on in a family friendly atmosphere. We are casual people, but that doesn’t mean our expectations for good food should be below par. We pride ourselves in offering familiar American fare entrees that we take to the next level with fresh ingredients and creative twists. Q. What vision do you have for Sweet Lou’s in the community, and how is this already playing out?
A. We are proud to be part of the Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene communities. Meggie was born and raised in Coeur d’Alene and is thrilled to be able to give back to the community that provided her with a solid education and a safe environment to learn and grow. Our goal is to be able to give back to the communities as much as possible, focusing on areas that are near and dear to our hearts. This includes animal shelters, public education and youth sports.
We’ve taken everything we’ve learned to love, and hate, from the Hope, Ponderay and Coeur d’Alene locations and designed the Athol location to be extremely comfortable for our guests and productive for our team. We have had input on every detail with expert help from Miller Stauffer Architecture.
Q. What has been the best part of being a business owner here in Sandpoint, particularly in the restaurant industry?
A. Our most popular item is our Fish and Chips with hand-battered cod in our own batter recipe. However, if Chad had to pick his favorite item— he says it’s either the Chicken Fried Steak or the Bison ribs.
A. Working in the restaurant industry in Sandpoint has provided us the opportunity to meet a wide variety of great people. From our guests to our employees to our vendors, we are constantly making new friends and building strong relationships throughout the community. Another perk of working in the restaurant industry is being able to share in guests’ special occasions. It’s been an honor to be able to host birthdays, anniversaries and other celebrations. Q. You were awarded Finest Burger for Sandpoint Living Local’s Finest 2021. What does that mean to you? A. We were excited to earn the award for Finest Burger, and it was really great to share the news with our team in the kitchen. We are very proud of every dish we serve, and it is exciting to be recognized for the hard work and dedication our team provides every day. It’s especially nice to win knowing the votes were from locals in our community—it’s an honor to know our customers recognize and enjoy quality burgers that we serve. Q. What exciting things are underway for Sweet Lou's? A. The biggest news we have these days is the opening of our third location in Athol. This project has been a long time in the making, and it’s the first time we’ve ever opened a restaurant from the ground up. It’s very exciting to have an opportunity to expand in the North Idaho market—Athol is conveniently located almost exactly between our Coeur d’Alene and Ponderay locations.
Q. What would you say is a "favorite" item on the menu?
The popular Bacon Mac and Cheese is in honor of our favorite restaurant in Georgetown (South Seattle) called Calamity Jane’s. They gave us the idea of tomatoes and mushrooms, but we added bacon to ours. The Kids Plate is in honor of Lou. When he was a toddler, he obviously wasn’t interested in the salads I was making for dinner. Instead, he was treated to a deconstructed salad, which is exactly what the Kid Plate is made of—all the good ingredients, minus the spinach greens. It’s a great option for parents dining with kids. Q. Is there a specific person or moment that has helped inspire you and your journey? A. Any chance we get to sneak away from the restaurants and enjoy all that Sandpoint has to offer is an opportunity for us to reflect on why we made the leap of faith to move over here and inspires us to keep working hard. Whether it’s a family ski day at Schweitzer or enjoying time on beautiful Lake Pend Oreille—we always pause in gratitude to the fact that we get to live here. The journey and the long days/nights at the restaurants are so worth it! Q. What’s been a key moment from the past year, something that you look back on with pride/joy/thankfulness? A. This has been a big year for us—especially after the chaos of 2020. Breaking ground in Athol to begin the journey of our third location was pretty epic. We’ll never forget that.

pril 30 marks the return of our beloved farmers market to downtown and all of the fresh produce, handmade crafts and delicious food we’ve been missing all winter long. It’s time to dig out your produce bags and spring and summer recipes, because beginning the end of this month, the community will head downtown to enjoy the fresh spring harvest from all of our favorite local farmers. Along with a host of fresh goods to satisfy your spring cravings, the market is an incredible opportunity to explore local artists and craft vendors while connecting with friends and family in charming Farmin Park in downtown Sandpoint. Starting Saturday, April 30 until Saturday, October 15, the market will be held on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm and Wednesdays from 3 to 5:30pm, rain or shine. This season, many favorite local vendors will be returning, along with some exciting new vendors, including farmers, homesteaders and food and craft vendors. “I am super excited to see what the vendors have been up to over the winter, get fresh produce and meet all the new vendors,” says Kelli Burt, market manager. Burt herself started as a vegetable farmer at the market, and after a few years off, looked to get involved again with the market—this time in a different capacity. This year will mark her fifth season as market manager, and the market’s 35th season in Sandpoint! The Farmers’ Market at Sandpoint is special, bringing together a committed community who values the unique gifts, talents and farm-fresh offerings of our talented vendors, in a special downtown location that is open for all to enjoy. “A few things that make our market so unique is that vendors must be located within 100 miles of Sandpoint (excluding Canada) to participate. Each booth must be run by the business owner, so when you are buying carrots from a vendor, you can be sure that those hands have been involved in every part of the growing process,” explains Burt. Some of the vendors who still arrive each Saturday and Wednesday have been around since the beginning of the market, and the feeling of camaraderie and community is a core part of what distinguishes this market and its vendors. “Sometimes market days can feel more like a reunion than a workday with all the storytelling and lore,” smiles Burt. Vendors range from farmers like Cloud Eleven Mountain Farm, Homewood Farm and Allicins Ranch to craft vendors offering everything from bike baskets, artwork and jewelry to bath and body products, and there are some delicious food vendors to whet your appetite while you wander the market. Grab a wood-fired pizza from Mandala Pizza, stock up on some gourmet jam and jellies from Sweet Heat, or even head
across the street to the local food truck court for other delicious options. Live music will return to the market again every Saturday and on Wednesdays June through August. You’ll find a variety of talented musicians each week performing from the bandstand within Farmin Park. Performers are all local musicians, which further helps to celebrate and support our local community, while providing an opportunity for new and known talent to showcase their work. The market is always looking for new musicians to perform at the market—either solo or in a group—and interested musicians can easily apply by filling out a simple form on the market’s website, SandpointFarmersMarket.com. Besides music, the market offers several exciting events throughout its season that you won’t want to miss. Opening Day at the market on Saturday, April 30, will be an exciting time to catch up with favorite vendors, explore new ones and celebrate the return of the growing season with family and friends as the community enjoys spring and the start of a warmer season. Kids Day this year will be on Saturday, August 21, when local youth can apply to have a booth for the day—free of charge. It’s an event the market and community always look forward to, and a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn new skills, showcase their goods and have fun together! This year Closing Day at the market will coincide with the Harvest Fest on Saturday, October 15. In addition to the last market day to visit your favorite vendors, there will be fun and games for kids of all ages, a raffle for a market gift basket, and the market will collect food for the Bonner County food bank to help support those in need in the community. Mark your calendars for all of the exciting events to come, and even if you can’t make it each week to market, make a point to stop by one of the events and experience the wonderful small-town charm of a Sandpoint Farmers’ Market. The market prioritizes making fresh, healthy food available to all members of the community, and a few years ago became involved with the SNAP program. “I am most excited to continue our involvement in the SNAP that allows low-income households to access local food,” says Burt. The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits provide food assistance to people in need, and recipients can use their funds at the market. A few years ago, the market even started the Double Up Food Bucks program for SNAP/EBT customers to expand their buying power. Customers who have a SNAP/EBT card can withdraw funds and will receive up to a $10 match of extra funds to spend at the market. If you’re a SNAP/EBT customer, simply visit the manager’s booth at the market to redeem your funds. The Farmers’ Market at Sandpoint is a beautiful and central part of our local community offerings, but it

takes lots of work and many hands to make it possible. If you’re interested in getting involved, there are many ways you can do so. The market is still accepting vendor applications, so if you’re interested in selling your produce, goods or food products, head to SandpointFarmersMarket.com to learn more, complete the application and pay the application fee. The market is always looking for community sponsors for the beloved music series. “We love supporting our local musicians and offering free music at the market, but it comes with a cost, and we are happy to accept sponsors!” adds Burt. The market also relies on donations to help fund its wonderful Double Up Food Bucks program. “This program creates food security in our community and helps keep SNAP funds local,” she explains. Beyond volunteering your time, donating funds or supporting the local market music series, you can support the market simply by coming to market days and buying your goods local from vendors who have been part of the growing or production process from start to finish. From farm to your table, you’ll eat better, enjoy incredible community, and have an opportunity to support the small farmers and businesses that make our community so vibrant. So, mark your calendars, and get ready for the return of market season! For more information on the market, upcoming events or to get involved, visit SandpointFarmersMarket.com.

CURB APPEAL How Small Concentrated Updates Go a Long Way By Joshua Nishimoto
S
o, you want your place to stick out and be noticed (in a good way). Increase your home’s curb appeal by focusing your efforts on quality additions that will make your home pop.
According to real estate agent Nedra Kanavel, curb appeal used to be a way for people to make their house appealing and attract potential buyers from the road as they drove by. In a way that’s still the case. Kanavel suggests when selling a home, homeowners should hire a talented photographer and an agent who will be able to work together to stage a property and get the right angles and lighting to give one’s home greater appeal on online websites. To ensure that your home pops, both in person and online, try adding red brick around your walkways and garden beds. Brick will draw the eyeline to the house, while highlighting your home’s natural beauty and color. You can also use old wooden or upcycled wooden pallets to create a walkway between the areas of your front yard. It’s an inexpensive way to add borders in and around your sidewalks or garden paths and adds definition to any walkway. Another inexpensive way to make your home pop is to fix up eyesores around your home. According to Kanavel, that includes decluttering your home, both inside and out. You may also want to pay attention to other clutter like that outdated air conditioning (AC) unit on the side of your house. Although you still use it and need it in the summertime, try hiding it by using wood, brick or stone materials as a cover. Most AC units are eyesores, so covering them up with basic materials, or something that is altogether uniquely you, will not only enhance the outside of your house but rid the unattractive view of that AC unit.
The cleaner and prettier the house, the better curb appeal, the more people will stop and look.
Plants and planters will go a long way to provide a natural ambience to the outside of your home. Pick lush, bright and inviting plants and flowers. Although the more plants the better seems like a good idea, according to Kanavel, not all plants will improve one’s home’s curb appeal. Sometimes people over invest in items that don’t help at all, like a large tree. Windows and doorways are the eyes of the house. Feel free to give those windows and doorways a makeover. Cedar shutters are pricey, so if you’re on a budget, try to find materials that add your personal touch to your windows. You can paint your front door a bright color to give it some character. You can also update your door with brand new crown molding. The clean lines will pop in photos. Also, be sure to re-paint tired doorknobs and light fixtures. You won’t regret it, especially if you are on a budget. You can also try adding a wreath to your front door. Feel free to make it your own by adding different colors, ribbons, flowers and branches.
In the same vein, one’s garage door says a lot about a person. To add instant curb appeal, attach a few hardware pieces to the border of your garage door(s). It’s amazing how a few small touches can transform your home. While these updates will improve anyone’s home, Kanavel insists that a homeowner should focus on improvements that increase the actual value of their home and know that making a few minor updates will not change a home’s true value. “If you have received an appraisal report, go back and review your files,” she said. “Your home’s value is based on things like quality construction, amount of land, square footage, bathroom count and other major additions such as porch, outbuildings, etc.” Know that the updates suggested here can help, but only if most of the items in a home are updated. The cleaner and prettier the house, the better curb appeal, the more people will stop and look. When buyers research deep enough, they’ll discover the true value of a home.

MARKET REPORT Looking to Sell Your Home? Simple tips to increase any home’s curb appeal Real estate is still a hot topic here in Sandpoint, with prices high, interest rates low, and a limited number of homes currently on the market. If you're looking to get your home noticed, spring is the perfect time to spruce up the exterior of your home. Up your home’s curb appeal by adding rich brick or upcycled wood panels to create borders for your home’s front walkway, garden or yard. Hide your home’s large and unsightly air conditioning (AC) unit with a wood, brick or stone cover. Add crown molding to your front door and consider painting it a prime color. Your door will stick out—in a good way. Whether you are planning to sell your home, or just looking to spruce things up for the spring, these helpful and cost-effective tips will give your home instant curb appeal.

LOCAL fun fact Farmers in Farmin?
T
oday we enjoy wandering the local Farmers’ Market in Sandpoint, downtown at Farmin Park on 3rd and Main streets, but despite its applicable name, many newcomers to the area may be curious to know the park is not named for its market use and the many farmers who populate its boundaries on Saturdays and Wednesdays each spring and summer. In fact, it is named after one of Sandpoint’s founding families, the Farmin family, who donated the half-acre parcel to the city for public use. The Farmins first arrived in Sandpoint in the late 1890s to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad and claimed 160 acres just west of Sand Creek through the Homestead Act. Today, that area is the home of Sandpoint, many of whose downtown street names and early community buildings and schools were created by the Farmins. In fact, Ella Mae Farmin is considered by many as the civic mother of Sandpoint. Improvements in the park have been furthered by other community members: The Hawkins family (Litehouse) donated the bandstand, and improvements like sidewalks, pathways and a clock tower were provided by the Sandpoint Rotary Club.

JUNE 18, 2022
This one-day bicycle ride with 150-, 100-, 80-, 40- and 25-mile routes is presented on June 18, 2022, by the Sandpoint Rotary Club to benefit the Book Trust program of the Lake Pend Oreille School District and other Rotary community youth service projects. The 150-, 100- and 80-mile routes incorporate a newly paved route through Montana, alleviating traffic congestion on the customary routes leading into Clark Fork, Idaho.
