"IT WAS THE MUSIC THAT DROVE ME. I LOVE THE MUSIC FROM THAT ERA. I REMEMBER DANCING ON THE STREET IN HOPE TO THE STROLL—IT’S A DIAMONDS RECORD. THE MUSIC RESONATES WITH ME."

16

I

f the name Carolyn Gleason sounds familiar, there’s a reason. The Hope native who moved to Sandpoint after college is the face behind Sandpoint’s beloved Lost in the ‘50s celebration and car show, and also the owner of Second Avenue Pizza. Since 1986, she’s been delivering community, music and fun to the people of Sandpoint, and this year marks the 35th return of Lost in the ‘50s, after it was put on hold the past two years. In her limited spare time when she’s not planning the next Lost in the ‘50s or running the restaurant, you might find Gleason shooting photography, or out doing what she does best—meeting new people. Q. What inspired the Lost in the '50s event? And what keeps you motivated to continue providing such an incredible experience to the community? A. First of all, it was the music that drove me. I love the music from that era. I remember dancing on the street in Hope to The Stroll— it’s a Diamonds record. The music resonates with me. North Idaho isn’t known for rock ‘n’ roll, especially back then. I didn’t get the opportunities like if you were living in Philly, or Detroit, or New York. I thought, “Why don’t we bring them here? We should do something to bring these artists here while they’re still alive.” That’s kind of how it started. All of our people that created history in our town, who became our icon people in our community, they got behind me; when I asked them to do the stupidest of stuff they did it. It grew from there. I went okay, you've got to have something else besides the music. I loved the cars, so I [thought] let’s do a car show. We’ll drag people in just to see cars, we’ll get people excited about the music, and it will connect it all. The first year we had 26 cars; 56 cars the second year. It just kept growing. When I first started it was a novelty. In my eyes it was always a community thing, it wasn’t to raise money for someone else. My intention wasn’t

a fundraiser, it was “look what it does in our community, look at everybody who’s coming into town.” Q. After holding it for so many years, was it difficult to see this beloved event put on hold two years in a row? What’s in store for the future of Lost in the ‘50s? A. You get to the point where you feel like everybody who’s coming and counting on it, that they’ve now become part of your family. I would tell people, “Hey, welcome home, it’s your town now, for two days, three days, or whatever it is.” The reason we didn’t do [2020] was the pandemic. I waited until the last-ditch effort to even call it off. The following year I thought about doing it; again, I thought, "This is still too scary." Two years being gone makes people go “Whoa, where’s ‘50s?” It’s nice to see my community totally, completely excited. It was important that as a handful of friends we could make something like Lost in the ‘50s go across the nation and be the place to be. You never know who you touch. I think that’s what we do with Lost in the ‘50s. I tell people, let’s get through this year, let’s make this year the best we’ve ever done. This is 35, let’s not lose. Let’s see what happens and if we can continue. It does well for the merchants, it does well for the community. Q. What are you most looking forward to at this year's Lost in the '50s? Anyone in particular who has helped make this year's event possible? A. Seeing everybody come back that hasn’t been here for a long time. I’m so excited about Darlene Love. She’s been on Broadway, she’s put out hit records, she’s been a backup singer to people like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones. The Righteous Brothers are playing on Saturday. They’ve been here before and they blew people out of the water.

They're phenomenal. I wanted Friday and Saturday night to both be powerful people. I’d say there’s a lot of people that encouraged me along the way, [who] helped me stay excited about it because they got involved with me. There’s no one particular person, it’s my crew that has followed me. They’re there for my support. I’ve been very lucky in my life to know a lot of people, and that’s how we’ve gotten here. It wouldn’t have happened without the people. The community has been awesome this year. I turn around and I’m in tears. I’m grateful. Q. How long has Second Avenue Pizza been in business, and what do you believe have been the successful ingredients to keep it running all of these years? A. Thirty-one years. I worked at the Garden Restaurant for 21 years before that. When I left there and went to start Second Avenue Pizza, all my people followed me. They knew whatever I did they were going to be there. What I learned from being in the restaurant business is you have to have community involvement, you have to stay consistent, you have to try to be a pleaser to anyone and everyone. You have to be consistent in what you do: Your food, how you treat the people that walk through your front door. Q. What do you treasure most about Sandpoint and the community? A. It’s the people, it’s the community, the beauty. Growing up here in a different era, where you didn't have to lock your doors, you knew everybody in town. The environment has changed, like all things. [But] our basics, our structure that we’ve had from ancestors to whoever built our community right on through—[for] all those reasons, it’s been a treasure to grow here. I wouldn’t change where I grew up, how I grew up, all the people I grew up with, for anything.

SUMMER'S AROUND

GET PREPPED FOR A SEASON OF FUN

B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E

A

s the last of the snow starts to melt and the rivers and creeks tumble in to fill Lake Pend Oreille, we’re all turning our eyes to summer and one of the best parts of Sandpoint: lake time! For all of the fun and beauty it offers, winter in North Idaho can be long, and by the time May hits we’re all ready for sunshine, warmth and more time outdoors. Summer in Sandpoint is full of time on the water, camping, adventures, and time spent with family and friends enjoying all that this area has to offer. But the season can be short, so preparation is key to enjoying a carefree summer and fitting in as much time outdoors as you possibly can. The lake is on the rise, and boat launch season and warm evenings are around the corner, so if you haven’t already, now’s the perfect time to start planning and preparing for your summer adventures, so you don’t take up any of your fun time with last-minute surprises. Here are some ways you can start getting ready now, so you can enjoy the ultimate carefree, fun summer. LAKE TIME! Lake Pend Oreille is on the rise, and that means it’s almost time to get out on the water. But whether you’re looking to powerboat, paddleboard or sail this summer, there are a few key things to get started on now so you can take advantage of the season as long as possible. First things first, if you’re winterizing a boat and haven’t made a summerization appointment with your boat mechanic already, now’s the time. If you need to have your boat serviced and launched, time’s ticking. The longer you wait, the farther out you’re going to be hitting the water. “The sooner the better,” explains Erica Dunn of Big Lake Recreation in Sandpoint. “At our shop, we are a minimum of two weeks out once mid-May rolls around. In June, that jumps up to three to four weeks as we get closer to the Fourth of July holiday. The boat shops in the area are always doing their best to get folks on the water as quickly and as safely as possible, but the amount of work to do can be overwhelming to the schedules we run with the staff we have. I recommend folks contact their boat shops for a service appointment no later than the second week of May.” When it comes to getting your boat serviced and prepped for the season, there are several important things to check and even service annually so you’re safe and prepared for getting out on the water. Checking for deterioration on everything from the exterior to dock lines and pipes, deck leaks, checking engine oil levels and making sure your navigation equipment is working and safety items like fire extinguishers and flares are up to date are just a few of these things.

“Every boat is unique in what service it needs on an annual basis, but a basic check of safety systems (bilge, blower, etc.) and making sure your impeller is in good condition are items that customers often forget,” adds Dunn. “In addition, a regularly scheduled drive service can help avoid long-term damage or spendy repairs.” When it comes to personal watercraft and paddle sports like kayaks and paddleboards, you’ll want to do servicing/inspection of parts as well to make sure everything is safe and water worthy. Dusting things off and getting them out of storage now will save you time and frustration once June rolls around and you’re ready to be out playing. As you’re prepping your boat, personal watercraft or paddle sports, don’t forget to take a look at your life jackets, making sure they’re in good condition and that you’ve got plenty for family and friends who might be joining you on board. If you’re new to boating or need a little brush-up on the rules of the water, a boat safety course is a great way to get confident for the coming season, and now is the perfect time to fit one in. BoatUS has a free online course that is approved by Idaho State Parks and Recreation, and it’s simple to register and complete. While you’re prepping your boating equipment, don’t forget to take a look at your dock (or consider your boat storage options for the summer so you’ll have easy access to the lake). Inspect your dock decking and frames for any needed repairs, and if you have one, make sure your boat lift is functioning properly. Now’s also the perfect time to get the canopy on your boat lift. Planning ahead for everything—from service to where you’ll keep your boat and water toys over the summer or how you’ll transport them—will make sure you’re ready to go when the first nice boating day hits. Just remember, “Always plan in a little cushion for the unforeseen, as boats like to have surprise challenges that require extra time and care in the shop,” warns Dunn. “Be kind to your boat mechanic—they're working hard to set you up for a great summer on the lake!” OUTDOOR ADVENTURES It’s no secret that Sandpoint and North Idaho are getting busier and busier—our secret paradise is not so secret anymore. That means everything from camping to boat rentals and watersports lessons take a little more advance planning than they used to. If you’re looking to rent a boat on a particular weekend or day this summer, Pat Holland of Action Water Sports recommends booking as soon as possible, as the most popular boats get booked fast during peak season. “Many of our clients book a full year in advance to guarantee their favorite boats are available,” he explains. They offer everything from wakesurf boats to pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, so if you don’t own one, you can still get out and have some fun. “We can't guarantee a last-minute booking for our most popular boats during peak season, but with nine boats

and four jet skis it is worth giving us a call at 208.255.7100 to see if something is available,” explains Holland. They also make it easy to go online and book if you know when you’re looking to rent; there you can access boat availability and easily complete your reservation. Same goes for boating and watersports lessons like wakesurfing, skiing and wakeboarding, which Action Water Sports also offers. The earlier you book, the better chance you’ll have of getting the time and day you want. “It is best to book as far in advance as possible, but if your schedule is flexible, we usually can fit you in within a couple of days' notice,” says Holland. If you’re looking to camp this summer, it’s already getting a bit late to reserve a spot (most of the good one’s go even a year or six months in advance), but it’s still worth checking. You might catch a cancellation, or there are a number of places that offer spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. Doing a bit of research and checking out reviews, websites and campground information before you head out can save you a lot of frustration and disappointment in the end. Whatever your summer plans might be, now’s the time to get started planning and prepping for an exciting season ahead, so you don’t miss one day of all that summer in North Idaho has to offer. After all, we’ve only got a few short months to make the most of it. Happy summer adventuring!

SUNBIRDS to

SNOWBIRDS Vacation homeowners flock to Sandpoint By Joshua Nishimoto

W

hen choosing a vacation home, Sandpoint is becoming the apple of most people’s eyes. To find out more, we turn to Real Estate Agent Dave Spencer to discuss Sandpoint seasonal homeowners, why more and more are choosing Sandpoint for their vacation homes away from homes, why they are good for Sandpoint, and what we can do to prepare for them. “Sandpoint properties still remain an excellent value compared to other resort towns in the country,” said Spencer. “And with a professional real estate agent, and some patience and diligence, you can still find that dream vacation or second home!” For summer activities, Sandpoint is next to none when it comes to possible options. Within mere minutes, there is access to water skiing, kayaking, relaxing on the beach, hiking scenic trails, mountain biking, jogging, attending an awesome outdoor concert, shopping and dining. Not to mention winter activities like snow skiing and snowboarding, ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing, snow biking, and sipping a hot beverage next to an open fire, it’s no wonder that people are choosing Sandpoint as their part-time adventure partner. “After experiencing Sandpoint, folks quickly realize all of the attributes and amenities that Sandpoint has to offer,” Spencer said. “They then realize that they want more than just a sample; they’d like to make the Sandpoint lifestyle a bigger part of their lives. That’s when they decide that they would like to own a vacation home here and call us to help them realize that dream.” With the influx of part-time homeowners to Sandpoint, one can’t help but wonder how these vacation-loving homeowners affect the area. “These new neighbors spend a large portion of their dollars not only on housing but on transportation, food, energy, entertainment, personal care and other costs with our local businesses,” Spencer said. “This new influx of cash flow to our local businesses is also spent and reinvested for goods and services within

diligently and responsibly, so that we can avoid creating situations that we came here to get away from in the first place, such as overcrowding, traffic congestion, jams and the like.”

With a new and diverse set of people moving into the area, Spencer goes on to explain that along with their monetary boost to Sandpoint, vacation homeowners also bring their expertise, skill sets, professions and businesses into our area. These individuals benefit our community, employers and residents in search of others who will provide and perform those goods and services.

With the consistently cyclical nature of the housing market, and the diversity of people moving to Sandpoint, there’s seemingly nothing that will stop Sandpoint from growing. We will always have vacation homeowners and, according to Spencer, we should embrace that.

While every city experiences growing pains over time, and there are clearly benefits to vacation homeowners moving into the area, locals can’t help but find themselves worried about the surge of new vacation homeowners to Sandpoint, what that does to the local real estate market, along with the possibility of congestion and overcrowding of our streets and favorite restaurants. So, should we welcome these newcomers with open arms? “I really think that we should be happy about them,” Spencer said. “We must, however, have the foresight to plan for this growth spurt

“Over the years I’ve watched the real estate markets go up and down. I’ve seen real estate loan interest rates at 18 percent. But over the long haul, real estate always eventually seems to trend back upward. Real estate is a usable, tangible asset. In the words of Will Rogers, ‘Buy land. They ain’t making any more of the stuff.’” If you have any questions regarding a future investment, or are looking for a resort, vacation, or second-home property, Dave Spencer welcomes you to give him a call at 208.627.9684 or email him at davespencertherealestateguy@outlook.com. He is a professional Idaho REALTOR, and Resort and Second-Home Property Specialist (RSPS) with CENTURY 21 Beutler and Associates.

A GARDEN PARTY

FUNDRAISER SPRING FOR THE GARDEN TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE HEALING GARDEN By Jillian Chandler

T

he community is invited to a wonderful fundraising event for Bonner General Health’s Healing Garden. A garden party fundraiser, Spring for the Garden is scheduled for Saturday, May 28, from noon to 3pm, at Bonner General Health's Healing Garden. “The Healing Garden is open and available to everyone in our community as a retreat for solace, and remembrance of those who have passed,” shares Aurora Clarke, volunteer coordinator with Bonner General Health & Foundation. “In order to keep it maintained and blooming, we need support from the Sandpoint community.” As the Healing Garden is wholly maintained by volunteers and 100 percent financed from donations and fundraising events, proceeds from the Spring for the Garden fundraiser will go back into the maintenance of the garden’s chapel, tea house, fountain, children’s area, new plants and gardening materials. Aurora adds, “In the future, we hope these proceeds will help to fund gardening classes, school field trips, and decorative rock walls.” There will be live music with Justin Landis and string music provided by students from the Suzuki String Academy, with refreshments graciously provided by Trinity. Activities for the children include rock painting,

and a worm exploration area where kids can explore worms, build a worm habitat, and take worms home for their own garden at home. There will be varieties of outdoor flowers available for purchase, as well as flower baskets donated by the Flower Farm available from the silent auction, where the community also has the opportunity to bid on floral and landscape pieces that will be painted and donated during the event by local artists. As Aurora affirms, the garden is always looking for volunteers. “Mary Anne, our garden guru, is at the garden on Saturday mornings looking for help. We will soon have a garden chalk board for volunteers to go in and help at their leisure.” Donations for the Healing Garden are accepted year-round onsite at the garden or through BonnerGeneral.org/volunteering-programs/thehealing-garden. For additional information, contact Aurora Clark at aurora.clarke@bonnergeneral.org. Help keep the Healing Garden in full bloom, and don’t miss Spring for the Garden. There is no registration required, and all are invited to attend.

LOCAL fun fact

Lost in the ‘50s

E

ver y May (with the exception of the past two years), locals and tourists alike stream into downtown to enjoy what’s become a beloved annual tradition far and wide: Lost in the ‘50s. Started by Carolyn Gleason back in 1986, it’s a celebration of music, cars and community. But the event wasn’t always such a large affair. In fact, it grew out of Gleason’s love of music and desire to bring the great artists of the era here before it was too late, and the event started as a fundraiser for another Sandpoint tradition: The Festival at Sandpoint. The cars were an afterthought, but soon became a large part of the fun. The first year, there were only 26 cars, and there was no charge for the show (for the first three years, in fact). It was a resounding success. Today, in its 35th year, the event has grown in size, but the downhome tradition and feel remain the same. You can often even find the grand champion from that first year, a ‘57 Chevy owned by a woman from Hamilton, Montana, at the show, her first-year trophy in the trunk, according to Gleason. In the early years, traffic would still roll through downtown during the show and events, but it wasn’t long before Gleason and her crew were able to shut down downtown traffic, so the show could take center (and a safe) stage. This year ’s 35th annual Lost in the ‘50s is back on May 20 and 21, featuring Darlene Love and the Righteous Brothers performing out at the fairgrounds.
