Let’s hear from Brian :: Winter riding on the river
Don’t let the snow keep you indoors and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t ride your bike in the winter! For some of us, winter is not a time to slow down; it’s a time to gear up! With a bit of preparation, biking can be a great winter sport. So, grab your gators, your gloves and a helmet, too, and let’s hit the road with Brian… With a pretty decent cold spell, and a few clear nights, the ice on the lake and down the river will freeze up just right for a ride. “At first, we were all a bit tentative, but once we got going I started feeling pretty confident,” Brian recalls. “My studs gripped the ice and things felt really steady as long as I took it easy on the brakes and didn’t make any quick turns.” There were plenty of people out on the ice to watch the spectacle as riders and pup made their way up the river. The ice fishermen reassured us of the proper thickness of the ice and the skaters and hockey players at 3rd street pier fell down a lot more than we did. Jim and Brian opted for pre-fabbed studded tires, while Sandy got creative and made his own. A few screws from Merwin’s and some Duct tape and he was set. Everyone was cruising right along, until Sandy got a flat...might need a little more protection between the screws and tube.? A quick fix and we were up and rollin. Biking on the ice and all around town was a blast! The dog and Brian had a race along the beach, but, as most of you may know… in cycling, four paws beats two wheels. Sorry Brian, better luck in the summer! As for the rest of you adventurous types, don’t wait for the weather to change, change your tires instead and jump on your bike. Until next time, happy cycling! For more information on winter biking and making your own studded snow tires, visit briansbikebuzz.com. Written by Tracy Fox and Brian Anderson.

Do you ever want to do something more? Something more meaningful, more impactful?
I think we all do. Fortunately, our community is full of amazing, energetic, compassionate individuals who not only feel called to do something more, they take action. Marsha Lutz is one of those people. I met up with Marsha in the Coldwater Creek Winebar, and the first thing she said was, “You know, I haven’t really done anything yet.” After deeper conversation, I find that’s not exactly true. Perhaps she hasn’t reached her ultimate goal, but she is well on her way. It’s not only what she has accomplished that moves people, but the simple fact that she felt the spark of inspiration and has had the courage to follow it.…all the way to Cambodia! Marsha Lutz is a professional photographer who has spent the last few years traveling and dreaming up ways to engage children in the art and expression of digital photography. A year ago, she made a trip to Phuket, Thailand, taking with her a bag of donated digital cameras, in the hopes that she would find a group of children that she could work with. As luck would have it, she met a teacher and was welcomed into her school/orphanage for impoverished and abandoned children.
Marsha was given a group of ten children, out of the six hundred, who were extremely eager to learn. They knew very little English, so with the help of a translator, she taught them to use the cameras, gave them assignments, and took them on fieldtrips (a very rare opportunity) to the beach and the market. Their enthusiasm and absolute engagement was inspiring to Marsha, as she could see their sense of pride and self-esteem blossoming before her eyes. Five days later, she had to move on. Back in Sandpoint, Marsha worked remotely with the director of the school to create an art show in Thailand. The children put on their best clothes to attend the event, seeing their photographs properly displayed next to donated art from professional photographers and being sold to wealthy benefactors. The money raised went to support their English program, giving these students a great advantage in furthering their education and their marketability in the workforce, as they grow up. “It’s not how much money you make between the hours of 9 to 5, it’s how fulfilled you are at the end of the day, that makes you happy.” The sense of accomplishment and joy shared with the students had Marsha glowing with pride. She was ready for more. Send her something she'll remember! Marsha hatched a plan and started moving forward. She recently teamed up with Amy O’Hara from Sandpoint Charter School teaching her students digital photography with the intent of returning to SE Asia to find a “sister school.” Our local kids loved the idea and are looking forward to sharing their lives, through photography, with new friends half way around the world. A perfect match was made with an organization called A New Day Cambodia located in Phnom Phen. This school/home was created to provide education, shelter and nutrition for kids who were literally living in and digging all their food, clothing and shelter materials from the municipal dump. Once again, Marsha is bringing opportunity and excitement into the lives of young & deserving children, in the hopes of nurturing their education and offering an opportunity for their spirits to thrive. The mission and goal of her work is to give children around the world a voice, letting them feel a sense of accomplishment, (as some strive to rise up out of poverty.) “I am a firm believer that if you can make one child’s life better, they will one day touch someone else’s life.” Marsha wants to give Students currently with Marsha in Phnom Phen. young people the opportunity to get to know each other without political stereotypes. Through photography, kids can become friends, while encouraging a sense of global citizenship. Ultimately, Marsha’s goal is to provide other photographers and schools around the world the proper resources needed to connect with one another and create this opportunity again and again. Marsha left January 19th for Cambodia, returning March 4th. Friends and kind souls
alike have given money and cameras to support her venture. To learn more, visit her website: ourworldfocus.org. To see the school/home go to: anewdaycambodia.org To donate, visit Horizon Credit Union.

Valentine’s Day
»» About 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year.
That’s the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas. »» About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets. »» Every Valentine’s Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shake speare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet. »» In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. »» In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, and Italy. »» The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. »» One single perfect red rose framed with baby’s breath is referred to by some florists as a “signature rose,” and is the preferred choice for many for giving on Valentine’s Day, anniver sary, or birthday. »» Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire. »» Teachers will receive the most Valentine’s Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts. Children ages 6 to 10 exchange more than 650 million Valentine’s cards with teachers, classmates, and family members. »» The heart is the most common symbol of romantic love. Ancient cultures believed the human soul lived in the heart. Others thought it to be the source of emotion and intelligence. Some believed the heart embodied a man’s truth, strength and nobil ity. The heart may be associated with love because the ancient Greeks believed it was the target of Eros, known as Cupid to the Romans. Anyone shot in the heart by one of Cupid’s arrows would fall hopelessly in love. Because the heart is so closely linked to love, it’s red colour is thought to be the most romantic. sandpointnewsline // february2011

Five-year-old Becky answered the door when the census taker came by. She told the census taker that her daddy was a doctor and wasn’t home, because he was performing an appendectomy. “My,” said the census taker, “that sure is a big word for such a little girl. Do you know what it means?” “Sure! Fifteen hundred bucks, and that doesn’t even include the anesthesiologist!”

CranioSacral Therapy
Just this morning, I embarked on the first leg of a journey into the unknown. It is my intention to discover and investigate the many different forms of alternative healing that are being practiced in Sandpoint. So, today, I placed myself in the hands of Terri McDonald, a long-time resident and accomplished bodywork practitioner, in order to receive a CranioSacral Therapy Session. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach which feels so gentle, that initially, you are unsure if anything is really being accomplished. Using as little as 5 grams of pressure, the weight of a nickel, Terri intuitively feels for the resistance that is built up in subtle layers throughout the body- along the spine, amongst the bony plates of the skull and the musculoskeletal system. Unlike massage, where the “knot or block” is found and pressure and techniques are used to release the tension, CST works with your nervous system to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. I could definitely feel the release and flow of energy when she found an area that was “bound up”- like in my hips, low back and interestingly enough, my jaw. Not knowing what to expect, I was surprised by just how good I felt. The experience was very relaxing. It was the equivalent of a good tune-up and oil change for your car. Afterward, my body felt properly aligned, my thinking was sharp and quick, and a general stressful tension was replaced with a light, energetic feeling. It could be that the timing for this treatment was perfect, after having crashed several times, in out-of-control skate skiing maneuvers, just days before. (That’s a story for another day.) Point being, my body felt great! What I did discover was that this modality of body work, CranioSacral Therapy, is highly effective and enjoyable as well. And, because of the gentle nature of the experience, it would be an excellent alternative for anyone, any age, from newborns to elderly. Terri says it is highly effective in working with migraines, TMJ and ear infections, chronic fatigue and chronic neck and back pain. CST stimulates the body’s own immune system and naturally eliminates all types of physical pain and stress.
A Quick Tip from this Month’s Personal Trainer and all it takes is a minute! Jennifer Merwin - Certified Fitness Trainer and Facility Manager for FAST, Sports Performance Center Balance and body awareness are key if you are going to avoid falling on the winter ice. To increase core strength and balance, do this exercise for 30 seconds on each side, once a day: »» Standing upright, legs hip-width apart, bend one foot up behind you. (Tighten your core: pretend like you are zipping up a tight pair of jeans, pull your belly-button to your spine. Feel your belly tighten? Hold that in.) »» Balancing on one leg, arms outstretched in front of you, as if holding a beach ball. »» Bend forward at the hips, touch your fingertips to the ground and return to standing. »» Maintain your balance and tight core, down and up.
STRONGER by the minute... Easier: Place one hand on a chair. More challenging: Hold a medicine ball or weights.
Ironman: Use weights, standing on a bosu ball. Most important to avoid slips and falls: BE AWARE OF YOUR BODY, plant your feet firmly, tighten your core and step deliberately. Take your time. Just like driving on icy roads, the slippery sidewalks need your full attention.

Coach of the Month T.J. Larson - Certified Personal Trainer and Director of Youth Program for FAST, Sports Performance Center.
Why have you chosen to be a coach? “I wanted to work with kids. I grew up in Sandpoint and this is my way of giving back. I know that if I had more coaching and mentoring as a young athlete, I could have accomplished more. Training these kids is something I can do to help them be better. They want to come workout and be in the gym with me and the other athletes. When the kids come here to train with me, they leave their school cliques behind and really get to know one another. I tell them, “Just give me 100%.” That’s different for each athlete, but with good training and that level of commitment, everyone gets better.” - T.J. Larson

Recipe from Good Housekeeping
Directions
Prepare Garlic Frites: On large cookie sheet, toss potatoes with garlic and lemon peel and cook as label directs, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, prepare Filet Mignon: In nonstick 10-inch skillet, heat 1 teaspoon margarine over medium-high heat until melted and hot but not smoking. Add steaks; sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook 10 minutes for medium-rare or until of desired doneness, turning over once. Transfer steaks to 2 dinner plates. Miah has been pickin’ strings and singin’ since he was able to walk ... He’d always been the one to break out a raspy tune while sittn’ at the cabin with close friends during his school years, or through the years across the fire while sippin’ a few beers. You could never mistake his voice, unique, calming and addicting. Over the past few years, Miah has begun playing at local venues such as Ivano’s, Downtown Crossing, Trinity at City Beach and The Dive. If you get the chance to catch an appearance, you’ll be charmed by his talent and deep country roots he ............ keeps with him.

fully plans, Dion radiates design confidence, and warm, understated elegance. Dion is a designer by trade and an artist at heart. She is a painter, sculptor and art history buff who has been studying and refining her approach for more than 20 years. Dion’s primary style is mixing styles. She never imposes her own personal tastes on others, and if you’re a one-style interior design purist, she can do that, too. But Dion truly shines when asked to blend highly different tastes and personalities that often live or work together under the same roof. She rises to the challenge. She brings people together. And if that’s not enough, she often creates an original piece of artwork for each full-service space she designs. Dion created a successful interior design firm in Ft. Collins, CO as well as an established artist and her work featured in many exhibits and articles. Her passion for beauty, small town charm and quaint country living has brought her back home to Sandpoint, where she was born and raised. Dion is pursuing her career as an artist and interior designer here in the Northwest. Sit down and talk with her about your projects. You tell your story. She carefully listens. And at that very first meeting you experience true peace of mind because you find yourself in very capable, caring hands. See examples of her artwork and interior design below.
