PUBLISHER’S note GET INVOLVED IN OUR FUTURE THIS PAST MONTH, I watched proudly as my oldest child graduated from college. As a father, I could not have been more proud. My only daughter and the oldest of our three children, she has always been a dedicated student, and in high school a dedicated athlete. She has worked hard for all she has accomplished, and I am confident she will succeed in anything she puts her mind to. But it was not that long ago that a woman in the United States could not even apply for a credit card without the written consent of her husband. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974 gave women the ability to apply for credit on their own. And prior to the Pregnancy Discrimination Act in 1978, women could be fired from their job due to pregnancy.

“WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING THIS SUMMER?” For my first time ever, I will be going on a cruise this summer! I am more of a land traveler, but my husband persuaded me to try a cruise. Now my entire family has decided to go, all 10 of us, and we’re cruising away this summer to Montego Bay, Grand Caymens and Cozumel! I’m mainly excited to just relax and bask in the sun, but we will definitely be going on some adventurous excursions when we’re off the boat.
“WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING THIS SUMMER?” Summer is the best season to get back to your roots and visit family; it reminds me of those days of summers off as a kid and going to see the grandparents and cousins. I tend to play the planes, trains and automobiles scenario using all modes of transportation to get to my destination. I love spontaneous road trips and not having a real plan in the summer. It’s the season for long days, not having everything so scheduled and losing time like a kid!

traditions and spirit. The Tacoma-based center is the one place where immigrant and nonimmigrant communities can come together in celebration, education and exchange. “More than 20 years ago, a small group of Asian-American immigrants envisioned a place where people of all ages could come together to celebrate their culture, learn about their neighbors and build community, says Faaluaina (Lua) Pritchard, APCC’s executive director.
The Asia Pacific influence is interconnected worldwide, with substantial influence reaching across the globe. APCC provides cultural teaching programs and activities for all ages enhancing the quality of life, for not only local Asia Pacific Americans but all citizens and residents living in the great Pacific Northwest. The center serves more than 100,000 people each year through their various celebrations and programs, youth leadership, and advocacy and community engagement.

Asia Pacific nations represented by APCC include: China, Taiwan, Japan, Okinawa, Korea, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Burma, Laos, Cook Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, Easter Island, Marshal Islands, Guam, Mariana Islands, Ponapea, Palau, Caroline Islands, Yap, Tonga, Tokelau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Bhutan, , Bangladesh, Niue, Tuvalu, Nepal, Vietnam, Tibet, Sri Lanka, Maldivian, Brunei and American Samoa.
Pritchard has been APCC’s executive director for the past seven years. She enjoys helping people; serving others is her passion. “What I love about this job is teaching others about who we are as a people of Asia Pacific nations,” she says. “ To see the general public enjoy learning about who we are as a people—and to see the general public wanting to learn more about who we are as a people—that’s the joy of my work.”
She adds that what makes the world a better place is when different people can come together and unite to enjoy life because they understand and accept each other. “That’s the beauty of life.” At the end of each day, Pritchard’s goal is that the APCC is able to bridge a community in peace, harmony and love; help someone to become happier and healthier; to make life easier for someone or a group; to connect someone to resources; to bridge communities

According to Pritchard, “Helping each other to better understand and appreciate their culture and traditions bridges generations, communities and even nations toward greater trust, respect and peace. There is a tremendous amount of work to do. There are important lectures and workshops to present, and there are valuable and life-changing stories of struggle and triumph to share.” APCC year-round programs include cultural children’s programs (education for kindergarten through 12th grades), cultural summer camp, cultural workshops to train teachers, soldiers and the community and classes to include cooking, language, dance and art. The Promise Leaders of Tomorrow youth program has been designed to help atrisk Asian and Pacific Islander youth succeed in overcoming hurdles and achieve their goals. This program has an emphasis on mentorship and cultural connections for these young people. APCC has helped close to 600 at-risk Asian and Pacific Islander youth graduate high school, connecting them with high-school and community programs. In addition, the cultural center promote advocacy and community engagement, being a strong voice for those they serve and connecting them with services and resources. This allows immigrants to advocate for their communities while engaging with civic leaders. A CULTURAL DESTINATION IN THE HEART OF TACOMA Our community has an exciting opportunity to help establish a vibrant, multi-use Cultural Center—the first of its kind in the state—to be owned and operated by APCC. Located on prime waterfront land, a part of the Point Ruston development, this new 430,000-square-foot development will allow APCC to grow out of the small and outdated building that no longer meets our growing community’s needs, while serving as a regional cultural destination for visitors from across Pierce County, Washington state and the entire country. The expansive site will feature modernized facilities and Asia-Pacific inspired architecture for APCC programming and rental space for the community, plus new features like senior housing, restaurant and retail space, a large theater and welcoming grounds for visitors.
classes. The first Saturday of each month, learn, cook, taste and drink with Taste of Asia with Tea. This is a fun and delicious culinary journey of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Participants will learn to cook traditional foods from the many featured countries and enjoy tea from that country as well. Each class is led by chefs who will take you through the steps in preparing and perfecting your dish, which you can then make and share with family and friends. If you are looking for a unique, educational and fun experience for the kids, APCC is offering its Asia Pacific Summer Camp, June 26 to July 14. At this three-week camp, for ages 7 to 10 and 11 to 14, kids will learn about 14 countries in 14 days! The days will be filled with learning about fascinating cultures and traditions of the Asia Pacific countries, interactive lessons, arts and crafts, and cultural games, allowing your child to experience the richness of the Asia Pacific heritage. Each day, a cultural lunch will also be included. There’s also summer fun for the entire family with these not-to-miss annual events! The APCC’s Seventh Annual Samoa Cultural Day will take place July 8. Thousands from around the region will gather to enjoy a day of festivities to celebrate and honor the Samoan people, where they will be treated to traditional village singing and dances, cultural displays, arts and crafts, games, retail vendors,
informational booths, authentic cuisine and more! Asia Pacific Cultural Center is proud to host this event each year for people to share and experience their unique customs, traditions and history. August 12 marks the 20th Annual Polynesian Luau. This is a fun-filled afternoon event for the entire family. The event includes cultural dances representing the islands of Fiji, Tahiti, Northern Marianas, Tonga, Hawaii, Marshall Islands, Tokelau, New Zealand, Samoa and Guam. There will be live music by Kanoelani Galiza Halau, a delicious Island menu of roasted pig, Hawaiian macaroni, sapasui, banana poi, panipopo, steamed rice and teriyaki chicken, cultural booths from the different islands and island desserts for tasting! The future looks bright for the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, and things are only getting better! With the Ruston Project underway, APCC is excited as they look to the future of the project and its impact it will have. The cultural center has been uniting thousands of experiences over the years to effectively promote arts and cultural education for a worldwide audience. A major component in continuing—and expanding—their efforts has been the campaign to build a home facility with the ability to reach out to and draw more than 400,000 visitors annually, compared to the current 100,000. The plan is already underway,

with the goal of opening the doors to the new facility in the near future. It is essential that friends, families, supporters and any of those interested in the APCC to come together to ensure this dream is brought to fruition. You can help make a difference through this project. They are accepting donations (which are tax deductible) to help build this regional cultural destination—a tourism site, located in Pierce County on waterfront prime land— Ruston Way. The new Asia Pacific Cultural Center: • Will create more than 1,000 jobs annually (mostly students) • Construction alone will provide more than 400 jobs with prevailing wages • Attract more than 400,000 tourists/ visitors annually • Provide housing for low-income seniors in addition to regular rentals • Encompass 47 cultural suites, with a suite for each API country • Offer eight food courts, gift shops and library • Provide daily cultural activities/ performances from any/all 47 API countries! Pritchard, like so many, is excited with the future development of the center. As she says, the new location will offer more space, on the water, as part of a brand new exciting environment, next to Point Defiance Park. “We’ll be partnering with Metro Parks for some Asian Pacific activities, bring Dim Sum to Pierce County, and more events and activities because of larger space. Each of the countries will have their own cultural suites,

hosting tourism from international countries, with indoor and outdoor activities every single day, seven days a week.” She adds: “Fortyseven Asia Pacific countries will come alive every day in Washington state. High school and college students will earn a living at APCC and pay toward their college tuition, there will be a state-of-the-art “culinary program” for Asia Pacific cuisine (partnering with local colleges for the culinary program), a business entrepreneurship training program for youth by our local Asian Pacific business owners … and much more.” Groundbreaking is planned for early 2019. And big news as of May 23, 2017 ... Loren Cohen, owner and managing director of the Point Ruston Way Development, announced to the City of Tacoma Economic Development Committee their firm commitment to donate their land worth $5 million to the APCC to build their project! If you would like to donate to the Asia Pacific Cultural Center building fund, you can do so online via their website. If you want to support the center and become a member, it’s as easy as filling out a brief form online. Annual memberships are affordable to all: students $10, seniors $15, individuals $25, family $50, church or non-profit $100 and business $300. The APCC mission is “to bridge communities and generations through arts, culture, education and business.” According to Pritchard, “The heart of the work APCC does every day is for you! We work to forge those special relationships, share experiences and provide meaningful examples of life lived with respect and honor so inherent in most countries and cultures of the Asia Pacific region. Let us build this bridge together with one heart to make for a brighter and promising future for all.”
APCC year-round progra ms include cultural children’s progra ms (education for kindergarten through 12th grades), cultural su mmer ca mp, cultural workshops to train teachers, soldiers and the community, classes to include cooking, language, dance and art.

ART ON THE
Avenue
A celebration of art, music and creativity BY COLIN ANDERSON
T
acoma’s Art on the Avenue celebration enters its 17th year this July. For those who haven’t been before, Art on the Avenue is a music and art festival that is hosted each summer in celebration of the diversity in artistry in and around Tacoma. Those who have been coming for years have surely noticed differences the past couple seasons as James Allan Tucker, chairman of events, continues to seek improvements. One big recent change has been to streamline the music. “Before, all the bars were doing their own thing, but we went to them, offered to handle the stage, musicians and bookings, and they were all for it,” said Tucker. This has helped with noise and also allows bar owners to focus on taking care of their guests instead of handling a show. This year’s Art on the Avenue celebration takes place Sunday July 9, with events going on most of the day. Sixth Avenue will be closed to traffic from State Street to Alder, so festival goers can easily bounce between entertainment venues, shops and local eateries.

WHERE TO HANG CLOSE TO YOUR MAIN STAGE New this year is the busking stage. Here, anyone is allowed to show up and perform, whether it be music, poetry, spoken word, comedy or pretty much any other open-mic format. These performances are limited to 20 minutes so as many people as possible can have the chance to get up on stage.
WHERE TO EAT CHECK OUT THE LOCAL SPOTS! There will be a variety of food vendors at the festival or you can try some local hangout spots like Shakabrah, Primo Grill, and Asado to name a few.
“We have more participation from the brick and mortar businesses than ever before this year; some that have never participated are coming on board which is great,” said Tucker. Guests can listen to rock, blues, hip hop and other performances, or learn the Argentine tango on one of the side stages, in between shopping, dining and drinking. Professional artists will have their works on display. You’ll find incredible photography, various styles of paintings, metal works and some items you probably couldn’t ever dream up. It’s not just professionals however, as amateurs, youth, students and other locals are encouraged to put their pieces on display. Another new area this year is the sculpture garden put on by students and staff at the University of the Puget Sound. Festival goers can walk through a garden featuring massive iron sculptures that the artists have been working on for year in some cases. In order to keep the focus of Art on the Avenue as local as possible, vendor

space is prioritized to local businesses that are active in the community. You won’t find knick knacks, but rather handmade and unique goods, foods and services, as well as non-profits dedicated to helping at the local level. Vendor and sponsorship fees are going directly toward making the event better by continuing to book more artists, beautifying the 6th Street core, and for the first time an artist’s scholarship is also available— anyone whose artistry has impacted the local area is eligible to apply. This celebration is always on the lookout for additional adult volunteers to set up barriers, direct crowds, help vendors and deliver water, along with other various tasks. All volunteers receive a free T-shirt. Organizers are hoping this year truly shows off the thriving and unique arts scene found in Tacoma. “There is all kinds of music, arts, painting, in our human art community, and I want people to notice how insanely diverse it all is,” said Tucker.

Nail Spa
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THAT HAS EMBRACED THEM BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
T
uan Ngo and his wife Cuc (Cici) Nguyen are proof that the American dream is still alive and well. Owners of La Bella Nail Spa, which opened in 2008 in Tacoma’s Stadium Historic District, the couple truly exemplifies the importance of small business and its impact on its local community. They are focused on not only offering their clients the best in nail care and services, but treating their guests with the highest professionalism and attention, offering them the perfect place to enjoy a luxurious manicure and pedicure in a relaxing atmosphere at a great price. In conjunction, they have created an environment that nurtures their staff to succeed professionally and financially. As part of Tacoma’s business community, Tuan and Cici enjoy giving back to their community, as they are grateful for the support they have continually received from public.
Q. What inspired you to go into the field you are in? A. My wife Cuc Nguyen (Cici) and I moved to Tacoma in 2005. I was working for BCRA as an architect, and Cici was working for a nail salon. She soon realized that she did not like the way the nail salon was being operated. On our five-year anniversary, I asked her to pick out a diamond ring for putting up with me for five years. However, she had something else in mind. Instead of a diamond ring, she wanted to open up a nail salon. After some consideration, we decided to open La Bella in the Stadium District because of the people and great community.
Q. What is it that you are best known for in your field? A. Pedicures and manicures are our specialty, but we are also well-known for our community involvement such as participating in the Mary Bridge Festival of Trees. We believe strongly in giving back. We care about treating our employees well, and we are all like family. Likewise, we’ve become very close with many of our clients. It’s very common for our
22 REALNW
regular clients to bring their out-of-town family in to meet us when they are visiting.
Q. Who has been the biggest influence in your professional life? A. My American Mom Marylouise Dillon, who adopted me. She brought me up the right way. She always told me to take care of our employees and everything will follow. Our employees are the most important asset in our business.
Q. How did you get your start and who, if anyone, helped you on the journey to opening your own business? A. No one helped us except this great country. We are so thankful to live somewhere with a system that if you work hard and follow your dream you will become successful no matter what race or nationality you are. If you work seven days a week, 10 hours a day, you are guaranteed to become successful.

Q. Why did you choose Tacoma as a place to start your business?
Q. Personally and professionally, how would you like to impact your community?
A. I can’t imagine opening in any other place than Tacoma. Tacoma reminded me of my hometown of Manhattan, Kansas. The people and community here really love and support small-family business. We are so blessed to be here, and the community welcomed us with lots of love. Because of our success, we are finding ways to give back to this wonderful town that has given us so much.
A. I like it that when our clients come in it’s not just about pedicures and manicures any more. It is more like family and friends. This is why we have donated to many causes that are close to the hearts of our clients. They are loyal to us, and we are loyal to them. We have watched and shared so many memories with our clients, both good and bad. We watched their daughters come and get manicures and pedicures when they were in grade school and watched them grow up to graduate and go on to college. We are truly blessed to be part of Tacoma.

f you’re going to achieve all your goals, such as sending your kids to college, retiring in comfort and leaving a legacy, you will need to save and invest throughout your lifetime. But to really complete your financial picture, you’ll also need to add one more element: protection. And that means you’ll require adequate life insurance for your situation. However, your need for insurance will vary at different times of your life — so you’ll want to recognize these changing needs and be prepared to act. When you’re a young adult, and you’re single, life insurance will probably not be that big of a priority. And even married couples without children typically have little need for life insurance; if both spouses contribute equally to household finances, and you don’t own a home, the death of one spouse will generally not be financially catastrophic for the other. But once you buy a home, things change. Even if you and your spouse are both working, the financial burden of a mortgage may be too much for the surviving spouse. So, to enable the survivor to continue living in the home, you might consider purchasing enough life insurance to at least cover the mortgage. When you have children, your life insurance needs will typically increase greatly. In fact, it’s a good idea for both parents to carry enough life insurance to pay off a mortgage and raise

and educate the children, because the surviving parent’s income may be insufficient for these needs. How much insurance do you need? You might hear of a “formula,” such as buying an amount equal to seven to ten times your annual income, but this is a rough guideline, at best. You might want to work with a financial professional to weigh various factors – number and ages of children, size of mortgage, current income of you and your spouse, and so on – to determine both the amount of coverage and the type of insurance (“term” or “permanent”) appropriate for your situation.
Once you’ve reached the “empty nest” stage, and your kids are grown and living on their own, you may need to re-evaluate your insurance needs. You might be able to lower your coverage, but if you still have a mortgage, you probably would want to keep enough insurance to pay it off. After you retire, you may have either paid off your mortgage or moved into a condominium or apartment, so you may require even less life
Life Insurance Needs Will Change Over Time … So Be Prepared
insurance than before. But it’s also possible that your need for life insurance will remain strong. For example, the proceeds of a life insurance policy can be used to pay your final expenses or to replace any income lost to your spouse as a result of your death (e.g., from a pension or Social Security.) Life insurance can also be used in your estate plans to help leave the legacy you desire. As we’ve seen, insurance can be important at every stage of your life. You’ll help yourself – and your loved ones – by getting the coverage you need when you need it.
It’s not the good life, it’s the best life!

BRAIN HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
By Heidi Jo Rickard, NTC
J
une is national Brain Health Awareness Month. Through my training as a nutritional therapy consultant and speaking with chiropractors and other health practitioners, I have found a common theme for brain health. Consider these ‘Easy 8’ steps, the guidelines for keeping your brain in tip-top shape now and for healthy aging in the future!
YOUR BRAIN
1. Nutrition – With summer comes fresh fruits and vegetable at local farmers markets. Drink plenty of water and eat nutrient-dense, organic, local foods and superfoods! As you grow older, your body—especially your brain—is exposed to oxidative stress, which accelerates the aging process. Food rich in antioxidants may slow the aging process and boost brain power. 2. Stay Active – Proper exercise has many health benefits including boosting brain health. One senior mentioned that she plays Pokémon Go and walks 10 miles a day! The Cleveland Clinic states, “People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise improves blood flow and memory; it stimulates chemical changes in the brain that enhance learning, mood and thinking.” 3. Be Smart and Informed – Get annual checkups with lab work from your medical or naturopathic doctor. Work with a local nutritional therapy consultant to create a healthy diet and lifestyle and understand which nutritional supplements may benefit you. 4. Rehab your Injuries – According to an interview with Kevin Leach, DC regarding brain injuries, it’s important to go to the hospital to “rule out any lifethreatening injuries to your brain.” Once this is done, you may be diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI); a concussion. General guidelines for treating a concussion include rest and proper nutrition consisting of brainhealthy foods. More often than not, a neck injury has also been sustained. To correct the neck injury, Leach recommends “anyone suffering a concussion to be analyzed by a qualified NUCCA Chiropractor focusing on Biomechanical Correction of the spine.”
38 REALNW
Looking For a Diet Program? 5. Be Smart about EMFs – EMFs can disturb thinking and sleep. Use an EMF screen protector for computers and cell phones. Finish screen time two hours before bed and unplug electronics in the bedroom before sleep. Take breaks from electronics throughout the day. 6. Healthy Sleep – When you sleep, you are allowing your body the time it needs to heal and repair. Prioritize your health with sleeping seven to nine hours; you will feel refreshed and more alert in the morning.
As you grow older, your body— especially your brain—is exposed to oxidative stress, which accelerates the aging process. Food rich in antioxidants may slow the aging process and boost brain power.
7. Reduce Stress – Brain-related stress may result in memory issues, worry and anxiety. To protect your brain, utilize daily stress-reduction techniques such as massage, yoga, prayer, meditation, aromatherapy, playing with pets, positive thinking and having fun. 8. Social and Mental Interaction – Using your brain helps protect against memory loss and slow responses. Keep your brain active by playing mind-stimulating games, reading, writing or engaging in social situations. Studies have shown that when you are with loved ones, people, plants or animals, it is good for your heart and brain.

Rediscover your smile
Through a thorough dental evaluation and compassionate discussion, your dentist can determine possible dental causes of your headaches and recommend answers.
By Rhonda R. Savage, DDS
D
entistry is all about creating beautiful smiles, and that artistry doesn’t end with teeth whitening and veneers. Your oral health and your overall health have a big impact on your appearance. Chronic headaches can affect your “look” without you realizing it. Some questions to think about: • Do your headaches make you feel tired or irritable? • Are they affecting the quality of your family life? • Do your headaches cause you to have difficulty focusing at work? There may be a dental component to your headaches. Headaches are usually classified as: Tension headaches – The most common type with feelings of pain and pressure, muscle aches, sleeplessness, and inability to concentrate. Migraines – An estimated 18 to 28 million Americans, mostly women, suffer from migraines. They are characterized by throbbing pain, visual problems, facial numbness, sensitivity to light and sound, and queasiness. Cluster headaches – The least common type, usually suffered by men. Cluster headaches begin as severe pain in one eye, resulting in swelling and watering of the eye. Dental problems are a frequent cause of headaches. Malocclusion– when the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together properly as the mouth closes–causes tension in jaw, facial, neck and shoulder muscles resulting in tension headaches. A history of trauma (falls, car accidents or sports injuries) can also cause bite-related Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) issues. Bruxism (grinding and clenching) applies massive bite pressure to the teeth and jaws at night, stimulating headaches (as well as dental wear and damage). Sleep deprivation caused by sleep apnea and snoring prompt headaches, too.

“
“
Through a thorough dental evaluation and compassionate discussion, your dentist can determine possible dental causes of your headaches and recommend answers. You may find relief from a comfortable mouth guard worn at night to minimize grinding, or an oral appliance to keep the airway open and alleviate sleep apnea. Bite correction with modern orthodontia or restorative dental procedures can eliminate headache triggers. Some dentists have a computerized bite analysis that takes the sum of four quick bites and can show where you bite first and how much pressure you put on your teeth. Your back molars should have 10 to 15 percent of your overall bite force. The smaller premolars average 6 to 9 percent of the bite force; your front teeth, 1 to 4 percent. In addition to your bite analysis, your range of motion and a TMJ head and neck exam can reveal if some or all of your headache issues are caused by your dental condition. Consider a dental solution rather than over-the-counter and prescription medications that only treat symptoms and slow you down. If your bite isn’t in balance, you can get massage therapy, chiropractic treatment or physical therapy, but the pain typically returns. You don’t have to suffer from headaches or take a handful of pills to get through the day. Make an appointment with a dentist to find relief from chronic headache pain–and rediscover that beautiful smile!
Affecting Your Daily Life? The leading cause of headaches is not what you think, and it’s not all in your head. TruDenta is a drug-free, needle-free, and painfree system to provide long-lasting pain relief. The life-changing, therapeutic treatments have been effective in patients suffering from painful symptoms of bite imbalance, chronic headaches, migraines and TMJ/TMD. RHONDA SAVAGE, DDS

SHOP FRESH AND LOCAL By Colin Anderson
Area farmers markets are up and running for the season!
W
hat started as a simple idea in 1990 is now one of the staples in the city of Tacoma. The weekly farmers markets draw people from all over for the freshest fruits and veggies, crafts, meats and cheeses, and a chance to mix and mingle with neighbors and local farmers. According to the non-profit Tacoma Farmers Market, in 2016, 142,916 customers were served across all markets and saw $930,704 in total sales, $464,182 of which was from farm vendors. These dollars spent help preserve local farmland and grow the small businesses owned and operated by neighbors and friends. While the Broadway Farmers Market remains the most regarded, the impact on the community really took off in 2008 when additional markets were added in South Tacoma, Salishan and at the Tacoma General Hospital. “Since its inception, the organization has expanded its mission and services to the community. Currently, the Tacoma Farmers Market acts as a small business incubator and supports numerous wellness efforts such as offering healthy food options to lower income families and educating our community about the benefits of choosing more healthy eating options,” said Aaron Ferguson, director of communication and operations. “We are a champion of keeping local dollars in our community by advocating for locally owned and operated businesses. We envision a Pierce County where farmland is actively preserved and where local farms grow and thrive.” If you haven’t attended one of the weekly markets, there is so much more than just fresh food. Tacoma Farmers Market is a farm, food and craft marketplace. The market hosts more than 90 vendors across its four neighborhood markets, including many farms located 5 to 15 miles from Downtown Tacoma in the Puyallup River Valley, a couple from the Key Peninsula and a micro-urban farm on a quarter of an acre in SeaTac. Markets showcase locally grown fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, eggs, meat and seafood and locally sourced, value-added products. There are also artisan-quality crafters like jewelers, furniture makers and soap makers, in addition to local food vendors, prioritizing those who use locally sourced foods and materials.

“The farmers market allows us to share a taste of our farm with the very people who will be eating, preparing and sharing what we grow,” said vendor Katie Green, owner of Wild Hare Organic Farm. “We appreciate the weekly opportunity to talk about what’s fresh, swap recipes and build relationships that will sustain our farm business and community for many great seasons to come.” A major concern for the Tacoma Farmers Markets is getting fresh food into the kitchens of those on a fixed or limited income. Those having a tough time paying the bills often have to turn to frozen, canned and fast food due to the low cost. The market, however, has developed several programs aimed at getting these community members fresh and nutritious food. The Fresh Bucks EBT-matching program helps individuals and families stretch their food budget by providing a one-toone match up to $10 for fresh fruits and vegetables at all of the markets. Eligible EBT/SNAP shoppers visit the market information booth, swipe their card and say how much they’d like in market tokens. Tokens are then matched 1:1 up to $10, and shoppers walk away with $20 to use on fresh fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and plant starts. “Tacoma Farmers Market has the freshest produce straight from local farms,” said Jennifer Blackson-Martinez. “I come to the market each week to buy the majority of my groceries. I’m so thankful that the market accepts my EBT card, and now the Double your Dollars (Fresh Bucks) matching program will help stretch my funds even farther. I really feel fortunate to be able to take part in the matching program so that I can

maintain a healthy lifestyle while on a limited budget.” Through the Apple-a-Day program, each child 3 to 16 years old receives a $1 Apple-a-Day market token to buy a fruit or veggie of their choice. Parents, grandparents or guardians can accompany the child to the market information booth to receive their token. The Senior Farm Share program offers $5 to $10 per week for seniors who qualify for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition program. For now, this program is exclusive to the Eastside Farmers Market, but plans are to expand into other markets when funding becomes available. Shopping at the market not only ensures you the freshest food around, but you’ll leave happy knowing you’re helping support small, locally owned businesses, and more of your dollars are staying within the community. “Selling wholesale is not an option for a small farm like ours, so we rely on farmers markets to get what’s fresh on the farm out to customers each week,” said Rawley Johnson, owner/operator of Early Bird Farm. “Our farm is only 10 minutes from the Tacoma market—that’s about as fresh and local as it gets.”
While the summer markets are hitting their strides, the Tacoma Farmers Market is proud to announce two additional markets coming this winter. “This year, we’re holding two Downtown Winter Holiday Markets for the first time: one on Thursday, November 16, and one on Thursday, December 21. Both Downtown Winter Holiday Markets will be indoor/outdoor markets on Broadway at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts,” said Ferguson. At one point, market customers needed to purchase tokens to give to vendors, but with all vendors now accepting cash or cards, the process is even easier. Other than fresh foods, visitors will enjoy kids’ activities, chef demos and live music. You can meet and talk directly with the producers of the foods and goods you are buying and learn how and where it’s grown. “We think there’s something for everyone at our markets. With our farm-fresh produce at accessible prices, our farmers markets are the places in Tacoma to get the best tasting veggies and fruit,” said Ferguson. REAL TASTY
Chipotle Peach BBQ Sauce Ingredients • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil • 1/2 medium yellow onion, medium dice • 1 tbsp. minced chipotles in adobo sauce (from about 1 medium chipotle) • 1 medium garlic clove, finely chopped • 1 tsp. kosher salt, plus more as needed • Freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 cup ketchup • 6 ripe but firm peaches (about 1 1/2 pounds), pitted and cut into 1-inch pieces • 1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar • 2 tbsp. cider vinegar
method • Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Add the onion, chipotle, garlic and measured salt. Season with pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion has softened, about 5 minutes. • Add the ketchup and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and slightly darkened in color, about 2 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, stir to combine, and cook until the mixture is bubbling around the edges, about 5 minutes. • Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the peaches are completely softened and starting to fall apart, about 15 to 20 minutes. • Transfer the mixture to a blender. Remove the small cap from the blender lid (the pour lid) and cover the space with a kitchen towel (this allows steam to escape and prevents the lid from popping off). Blend until smooth. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

REAL HOME & GARDEN
TOP GARDENING Trends 2017 Be the talk of the neighborhood
W
hether you have a backyard or just a few containers on the patio, sunny days are your cue it’s time to garden. Growing your own flowers, herbs and vegetables is a lot of fun, and with some simple tips, it can be pretty easy to make sure your outdoor space is a showstopper. The experts at Ball Horticultural Company offer insight into the year’s top gardening trends so you can plant with confidence and creativity.
Trend No. 1: Create Curb Appeal Your home’s exterior will influence the first impression of anyone who visits. Give your entryway an instant beauty boost with begonias. They’re perfect for the time-starved gardener, grow well in sun or shade, and fill in fast and full. At the forefront of this trend are Megawatt begonias. New for 2017, they feature exceptional performance and a unique bronze-leaf color that is sure to be noticed by guests.
58 REALNW
Trend No. 2: Tablescapes Bring the beauty of gardening indoors with tablescapes. Use your harvested vegetables as decor inside in display bowls; you’ll give your interior design a fresh look. There are also non-edible potted veggies like Hot Pops Purple Ornamental Peppers. They mature in multiple colors to keep you in color all season.
Trend No. 3: Fresh Food Fascinations There’s nothing like pulling fresh food from the garden, but 2017 is trending toward more unique flavors. Replace your traditional pepper plants with specialty hot peppers like jalapenos or chiles. And you don’t need tons of space to enjoy multiple tomatoes. Try Take 2 Tomato Combos which give you a slicer and a cherry tomato in one pot, providing twice the flavor in half the space. Travel the globe through herbs: Plant a kitchen garden of different basils, lavenders and mints. Use them in your next cocktail!

RETAINING
Attractive outdoor seating options
H
umpty Dumpty had the right idea when he sat on a wall.
Segmental retaining wall (SRW) units are a popular solution for beautiful and durable outdoor seating—from freestanding walls that double as seating and two-tiered couches to large applications such as cost-effective amphitheater and stadium seating. Landscape professionals and do-it-yourselfers can build seating options from these multi-purpose units that are a trusted solution for soil retention, erosion control and to mitigate grade changes in the landscape. Residential Seating “Retaining walls are durable, beautiful and versatile tools of the trade,” says Scott Arnold, manager of Villa Landscapes in St. Paul, Minnesota. “Our landscape designers use retaining-wall systems to create hardscapes such as fire features, raised patios, planters and other outdoor living amenities in addition to retaining walls, tiered seat walls and freestanding walls.” The solid, pinned units provide extreme versatility and ease of installation. “VERSA-LOK is an ideal building block for tiered wall seating and even amphitheater seating because of its outstanding ability to create curves, corners, columns and tiers with the single standard unit and no special pieces,” Arnold says. A couch kit is one popular use of the VERSA-LOK retaining-wall units, according to Arnold. The curved couch with a tiered back provides seating for up to four people, and stepped ends make an attractive accent. It can be installed in a paver patio or as stand-alone seating in the garden. A Versatile Tool Seat walls can be worked into many landscaping designs. Freestanding seat walls can frame a square or circular patio to create an outdoor room, doubling the function and value of the retaining wall.
“Some of our most popular installations feature fireplaces on a patio or a fire ring surrounded by a seat wall,” says Kelly O’Donahue, a landscape designer with Villa. “Seat walls or a hardscape couch around a fire feature are useful and beautiful additions to any outdoor living space that you can enjoy all season.” 62 REALNW
SRWs can be used to replace an aging deck by creating a raised patio to grade, says Arnold. A freestanding seat wall can be built within the raised patio to serve as seating, to define the outdoor room and provide a measure of fall protection. Commercial Seating Event spaces such as stadiums, courtyards, outdoor classrooms and amphitheaters have benefited from economical outdoor seating solutions using SRWS. Staff at the International Institute of St. Louis wanted to create an event space in an area that had a crumbling cinderblock wall separating the courtyard from the parking lot. Landscape architect Brad Furfaro worked with the site architect to come up with a tiered wallseating solution. “We met the challenge of creating a beautiful outdoor space that looked nice and functions as seating, but also was a structure to hold the parking lot hillside back,” says Furfaro, who owns Furfaro Design-Build Landscapes in St. Louis. “For a measure of design continuity, we were also able to use caps that match the SRW units on an existing cinderblock wall that did not have to be removed.” The new amphitheater-style space seats about 80 people for outdoor training and events. “One challenge was a grade change from the base of the wall to the top and also a horizontal grade change from one end to the other,” Furfaro says. “The slope and seating starts out 4 feet on the east end and graduates to more than 6 feet on the west end. I had not used VERSA-LOK in this way before, but I knew that it’s a block that I can do anything with.” It’s a good idea to sit on a wall when so many outdoor living features can be created with SRWs. From curved couches and freestanding seat walls to amphitheaters and stadium seating, retaining-wall units not only function as they were intended but also offer new solutions for outdoor living projects.
