THE LOWDOWN ON CABINETRY
An art form unto itself BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, SEVEN BEE INTERIORS | FOR SANDPOINT FURNITURE, CARPET ONE AND SELKIRK GLASS AND CABINETS
C
abinetry is often the first thing my clients and I choose when working on a new construction project or kitchen remodel. Why? Because the cabinetry sets the tone for the entire room—and often the rest of the house. Cabinetry is really an art form unto itself. Not only does it have to be functional, but it needs to be beautiful and durable as well. Yet, there are so many different types and styles it can be difficult to start. Cabinet boxes are the storage units themselves. These often come in set size— counter height and multiple widths, though they can be customized to include drawers, pullouts, doors and more. The key to selecting the correct sizes for your kitchen is to really take a look at the things you have to store and where you like to store them. Do you like to keep dishes overhead in upper units, or do you prefer a lower-unit dish drawer? The options are endless, but there are often only a few that are exactly right for how you live and cook. Working with a good salesperson can really help streamline this process. After functionality comes style. Do you like a more ornate door and drawer combo? Something with a little more detail works wonderfully in more traditional homes. I’m a fan of the Shaker style, myself, but now there

Purchase 1 Dinner and 2 Drinks at Full Price & Receive 2nd Item of Lesser Value at 50% OFF* are usually options within the Shaker style, some with a beaded molding, some plain. Some with a slab drawer front versus a drawer with a border to match the door. Shaker works well with a variety of interiors—from modern to formal and everything in between, which is why it is a go-to for designers. Finally, there is the color to consider. While painted cabinetry is all the rage right now, people are often surprised to find that painted styles typically cost more than their stained wood counterparts. This is because painted surfaces are more laborintensive to produce and leave no room for error—they must be smooth and blemish free. Typical woods for cabinetry include beech (often considered builder-grade for its affordability), alder, cherry, walnut and, of course, oak. These can all be stained a variety of colors and are offered in an array of styles. Beware, however, that not all woods are created equal. Walnut, for example, while pricey, is soft and may ding and dent more easily than other woods. If, like me, you are a brave soul, you can paint your existing cabinetry to give your kitchen and baths an updated look. I used a primer and natural milk-based paint, which covered well. Chalk paint is a popular option and covers well, also. However, keep in mind that as with any paint job, the finished product is only as good as the preparation. It pays to do a light sanding, use a cleaning agent and degreaser, such as TSP, and then always use a primer, which helps the paint adhere to the surface. And you will be doing multiple coats of paint, then adding a layer or two of sealant, so make sure you set aside plenty of time for this project!

If so, you’d need to adjust many aspects of your financial strategy, such as when to take Social Security, how much to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts and so on. FOSTERING THE EXCITEMENT OF LEARNING SHS AcaDeca team shines at national competition BY KENDALL LANG
S
andpoint High School’s Academic Decathlon team showered the word success all over their 2018-19 school year. The team demonstrated great perseverance and heart as they climbed the AcaDeca ladder to the top: nationals. Academic Decathlon is the nation’s premier academic competition at the high school level. Participants must prepare for and are tested in 10 categories: Art, Music, Economics, Literature, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Essay, Speech and Interview. Each year there is a different overall theme guiding the curriculum. This year’s theme was The 1960s: A Transformational Decade. At SHS, students take this class as a humanities elective with honors credit. Preparation for the year begins in June, right after school gets out. Students study all summer long to prepare for competition as the school year starts up once again. AcaDeca coach Dana Stockman said, “This year’s students were simply awesome in their approach to each competition. While we certainly had stand-out students who consistently excelled, every student on the team medaled at least once over the course of the year.” Dana has been the coach for four years. At the national competition, there are about 700 students from all over the United States, the United Kingdom and China. The national team consisted of team captains Adele Marchiando and April Radford and their teammates Nate Couch, Alara Langley, Shane Curtis,

Brennah VanCleave, Seth McCutchan, Paige Szapocznikow and Kjetil Lund-Andersen. In Minnesota, every student placed in the top 10 in one or more individual events, even if they didn’t medal. Five of the students earned medals in individual events: Adele won bronze in art; Shane won gold in speech and interview, and a silver in essay; Brennah won silver in interview; Paige won bronze in both speech and essay; Seth won gold in essay and social science, and silver in science. Senior team captain Adele mentioned that she was incredibly proud of herself for bronze as her score indicated she only missed two questions on a 55-question test. She was voted Most Valuable Team Member by her teammates. As she puts it, “AcaDeca is my people,” and it’s the community that has helped her through high school. For junior team member Nate, the national competition was “the symbol for the saying ‘hard work pays off.’” He expressed his love for Sandpoint and how lucky the community is for its opportunities. “Nationals gave me a boosted sense of pride in Sandpoint because having our small speck on the map representing the State of Idaho at a national competition known for its academic prestige is certainly something to be proud of.” As this was Adele’s last year on the team, said she recommends AcaDeca and the experience to everyone. “I think a lot of people view it as this serious activity where we are super focused and studious, but it’s really more like a group of friends with a ton of inside jokes and puns about oddly specific trivia facts.” She feels that AcaDeca really helps to foster the excitement of learning. As the school year has ended, preparation for next year is already in full force with the topic being In Sickness and In Health: An Exploration of Illness and Wellness. Dana mentioned they have 10 returning decathletes this year to “provide leadership for our new students next fall, and I hope that we will see similar results next year.”
