WHAT TO BUY WHERE? Shopping local vs. online BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, DESIGNER, SANDPOINT FURNITURE CARPET ONE, A DIVISION OF PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
T
echnology is becoming a bigger part of our lives every day, whether we want it to or not. One of the most common ways technology has affected our lives is how we purchase things. However, online purchasing can be a slippery slope. For example, need a new mattress? A sofa? There are lots of online pop-ups just for that purpose. But, with a mattress or even a sofa, how do you know how it will feel? Is it supportive? Does it work for your bad back? There are certain things that just need to be tried before you buy, and I call these “in-person” purchases. After all, you will be sitting or sleeping on this item for years to come. If it is uncomfortable, smells weird or is just plain wrong, the purchaser is often stuck with it. The online store may offer free returns, but the purchaser is responsible for the return shipping. And shipping a sofa across the country may be cost-prohibitive, to say the least! In the flooring industry, it is common for us to hear that someone found their dream flooring cheaper online. That may be true, but the buyer must beware. For example, the price per square foot might be less, but there may be hidden costs associated with shipping, etc. Also, if there is an issue, will the online store honor the manufacturer’s warranty? Often, the warranty is rendered void if the product is purchased through an online vendor.
4 SANDPOINT360
Other issues you might face include shipping logistics. Say you purchase 1,500 square feet of tile for your new home. You found a great deal online and have even done your due diligence, ordering
YOUR TRUSTED UNDERGROUND EXPERTS Proudly Serving the Greater Northwestern US
yourself a sample first to make sure you like the actual color and texture. Then, a delivery driver calls; the tile is scheduled for delivery. Do you have a shipping dock or a forklift? Are you on a dirt road? Are load limits in place? And, if they manage to get it to your home, how will you get it out of the truck? You are now the proud owner of two pallets of tile (weighing in roughly at a ton apiece) in the back of a delivery truck. We’ve had more than one call from a homeowner in distress who has faced that very situation. And the final, best reason to purchase something in person is because you know the dollars will stay in our community. Shopping local supports not only the owners of the business but the people who work there. And by shopping local, our dollars go to work in other local stores and into the community itself—to our churches, our schools, our nonprofits and community groups. And after all, isn’t that what made us all fall in love with this area in the first place? We live in a wonderful, giving, colorful, eclectic community. And you can’t buy that on Amazon.

onsistency is a key ingredient of success in many activities – including investing. And one technique that can help you become a more consistent investor is paying yourself first.
Many people have the best of intentions when it comes to investing. They know how important it is to put money away for long-term goals, especially the goal of a comfortable retirement. Yet they may only invest sporadically. Why? Because they wait until they’ve taken care of all the bills – mortgage, utilities, car payments and so on – before they feel comfortable enough to write a check for their investments. And by the time they reach that point, they might even decide there’s something more fun to do with what’s left of their money. How can you avoid falling into this habit of intermittent investing? By paying yourself first. Each month, have your bank move money from your checking or savings account into the investments of your choice. By taking this hassle-free approach, rather than counting on your ability to send a check, you can help ensure you actually do contribute to your investments, month after month. By moving the money automatically, you probably won’t miss it, and, like most people who follow this technique, you will find ways to economize, as needed, to make up for whatever you’re investing. You already may be doing something quite similar if you have a 401(k) or other retirement plan at work. You choose a percentage of your earnings to go into your plan, and the money is taken out of your paycheck. (And if you’re fortunate, your employer will match some of your contributions, too.) But even if you do have a 401(k), you’re probably also eligible to contribute to an IRA – which is a great vehicle for your pay-yourself-first strategy. You can put in up to $5,500 per year to a traditional or Roth IRA (or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older), so, if you are able to “max out” for the year, you could simply divide $5,500 or $6,500 by 12 and have either $458 or $541 moved from your savings or checking account each month into your IRA. Of course, you don’t have to put in the full $5,500 or $6,500 each year, although some IRAs do require minimum amounts to at least open the account. You might think such modest amounts won’t add up to a lot, but after a few years, you could be surprised at how much you’ve accumulated. Plus, you may not always be limited to contributing relatively small sums, because as your career advances, your

In any case, here’s the key point: When you invest, it’s all right to start small – as long as you keep at it. And the best way to ensure you continue investing regularly is to pay yourself first. If you do it long enough, it will become routine – and it will be one habit you won’t want to break.

MARINA BREUNER & TAG BENEFIELD BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTESY JASON DUCHOW PHOTOGRAPHY
MARINA BREUNER - Senior Marina Breuner has been playing volleyball for 10 years and is passionate about the sport. “I love the competition that volleyball brings out in people. There is no physical interaction with the opponent, forcing a single team to work together in order to terminate a point,” said Marina, who, at 6’1”, is the setter on the SHS varsity team. “My whole team is very competitive, and it is incredible to watch us work as a whole unit and score as a team.”
Over the years, Marina has played basketball, lacrosse and soccer and was also a dancer. But it is volleyball that she hopes to continue in the collegiate arena. “I plan to go to either Boise State University or the University of Montana,” said Marina. “I am interested in pursuing a career in early childhood education.”

Marina shares that one of the biggest challenges in any sport is trying to break a losing streak, something she experienced last year. “Last year we had this problem but overcame it by practicing harder than we had before and working as hard as we could. Although this didn’t result in us going to state, it prepared us mentally and physically for an almost undefeated season this year.” There is no doubt that as Marina goes forward in her volleyball career, she will be successful in athletics and life. “One life lesson I have learned from volleyball is there is always more to give. You can be fully spent,
lying on the ground, but you still manage to get back up and keep pushing,” she said. “As a senior, seeing my teammates—and especially myself—struggle working through daily workouts on the beach and on the court was excruciating, but we know that we, as a team, are better for it, and we are prepared to do whatever it takes to become champions.” TAG BENEFIELD - A sophomore at Sandpoint High School, Tag Benefield has played sports most of his life. “I have been playing tackle football since third grade, wresting since seventh and playing lacrosse since fourth grade,” said Tag, who adds that he enjoys weightlifting, sleeping, eating and hanging out with his friends.
Although he has a couple of years yet to decide on his post-high school education plans, Tag said he would like to play sports in college and hopes that he can get a scholarship to do so. While there are many challenges that come along with being an athlete, Tag said his most difficult challenge thus far in his athletic career has been making weight for wrestling and trying to maintain it. “I overcame that by having a good work ethic and staying on a strict routine,” said Tag.
Drop in and get a free quote from Jason. He’ll help make sure you get the protection you need, along with the savings you deserve.
This year, Tag is on the varsity football team. He shares that what he enjoys most about the sport is the competition and the physical aspect. Head coach Ryan Knowles has been impressed by the young athlete’s efforts this season. “Tag has done a great job stepping into the heart of our defense,” said Coach Knowles. “He invites contact and has a nose for the ball. He has a lot of good football in front of him!” Being involved in sports has taught Tag important values that have led to him being so successful. He said it all boils down to two simple things— discipline and teamwork.
