OVER THE PAST FEW years, if you’ve taken out a mortgage or another consumer loan, you’ve probably welcomed the low interest rates you may have received. But as an investor, if you’ve kept any retirement savings in fixedrate investment vehicles, you may have seen low rates in a less favorable light. And that’s why it may be time for you to take a closer look at your financial strategy for working toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Of course, you can always hope that interest rates will rise, and perhaps they will. As you may know, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at record lows in recent years to stimulate lending and thereby boost the economy. But rates can’t get much lower, and if inflation were to heat up, the Fed could reverse course by starting to raise rates. However, if you’re going to do a good job of building financial assets for retirement, you really can’t afford to play “wait-and-see” with interest rates. Instead, consider the following moves: •

Rebalance your portfolio. No matter what your situation, it’s a good idea to periodically rebalance your investment portfolio to help ensure it still reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. If you’re concerned about low rates harming your future investment income, you have more reason than ever to review your portfolio and make adjustments as needed, relative to your objectives. For example, if it seems that your portfolio has become “overweighted” in any one vehicle, you may need to change your investment mix, keeping in mind your individual risk tolerance.

Redefine “retirement.” Retiring from one career doesn’t have to mean retiring from

work altogether. If you decide to work part time, do some consulting or even open your own small business, you may be able to earn enough income to take some of the “pressure” off your investment portfolio in terms of providing you with the money you need to live on during retirement. Also, by working during your nominal retirement years, you may be able to delay taking Social Security until you’re a little older, when your monthly checks can be larger. •

Review your withdrawal strategy. During your retirement, the amount you choose to withdraw from your investments each year will depend on several factors, including the size of your portfolio and the amount of income it is providing. As you chart your retirement strategy, you’ll need to factor in a realistic withdrawal rate.

Re-examine sources of investment income. You may want part of your retirement income to come from investments that offer protection of principal. If so, you don’t have to settle for the lowestrate vehicles. By looking at the various alternatives and blending them with your overall portfolio, you may be able to boost your income without significantly increasing your investment risk.

In short, just because interest rates are low, you don’t have to lower your retirement expectations — as long as you plan ahead and explore your options.

Julie Martin re-opened the iconic downtown store on November 19 after purchasing it from longtime owner, Ranel Hanson. “Ranel has left Zany Zebra with a great legacy, and I’m lucky to be able to take over from her,” said Martin. “Zany Zebra has a solid customer base, and I really hope the customers will stick with me through this transition.” The store is a mixture of the traditional Zany Zebra items and some new inventory that reflects Martin’s style. One thing longtime customers will notice is that there are more gift items from which to choose and less fashion apparel. “I still carry the fabulously comfortable bras along with leggings, hoodies, long sleeve T-shirts and more,” shared Martin, adding that she carries women’s sizes from small all the way to 2X. Martin said she will let the customers drive the inventory she carries to some extent. “If customers show interest in the clothing I currently have in the store, I will branch out and carry more clothing—especially for spring and summer.” While Zany Zebra still has a wide selection of novelty gifts, including silly cards and socks, Martin has added items such as unique, hand-painted candles from Africa, Bonsai tree kits, spiders and butterfly specimens, handmade bows and arrows (with rubber tips) for kids, silk screen T-shirts, and other handmade items.

“I like to support small business, so a lot of the items I have added are from Etsy Wholesale and local artists and businesses,” said Martin. With prices that range from one dollar for Japanese erasers to $200 for a handmade quilt, Zany Zebra has something for everyone. And one thing is for sure; a stroll through Zany Zebra is sure to make you laugh and giggle.

“We carry unique items that are silly and items that are unique because they are handmade,” said Martin. “I try to carry something for everyone, young to old.” While she has only been in the community a little less than two months, Martin is familiar with the area, as she has often visited her mom and sister who live in Priest River. Martin decided to make the move from Seattle when her daughter graduated from high school and left to attend college. “Seattle no longer felt like home to me, so I made the decision to move here to be closer to my mom and sis, now we’re neighbors!” Martin is grateful for the support of Ranel Hanson during the transition and welcomes feedback from customers as to what items they would like her to carry. “I appreciate their input, and I want them to feel like Zany is a fun and special place that they can continue to shop at,” said Martin. “I’ve already added a couple of items that have been suggested by customers. I won’t be able to meet all requests, but I’m open to considering them.” Whether you have been a long time customer of Zany Zebra or have never visited the store, be sure to stop in. It will be sure to leave a smile on your face!

SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD TYRONE Larson has been involved in sports since he first began to play baseball at just four years of age. He added football to his list at the age of 10 and has been involved in both sports ever since. Tyrone has won two baseball state championships, one in 2013 and another in 2014 when his team took fifth in the Western Region.

TYRONE LARSON:

Balancing sports and school has not always been easy, but Tyrone, now in his junior year, has a 3.4 GPA and is working to raise his grades even more. “I am planning on going to a four-year college and hoping to get a scholarship to play football at the D1 level,” said Tyrone who has been looking at schools in both Washington and Oregon and said he would like to major in business and sports marketing. While Tyrone said that it has been a challenge to play above his age group, he has reaped the benefits by having twice as many friends. While he loves football, Tyrone said baseball is his favorite sport because it is just as much an individual sport as a team sport. “My best friend Trey made me love the game that much more for always being there for me and always telling me to never quit and try to always be the best I can be,” said Tyrone who adds, “One life lesson I’ve learned from playing sports is you can always push yourself harder than you’ve ever thought you could.”

DOUBLE DEAL

YEO YARNELL: SENIOR YEO YARNELL has played soccer since she was 7 years old. Her training and hard work over the years has paid off as she was invited to play on the Idaho ODP (Olympic Development Program) state team in Arizona earlier this year. She is hoping to repeat that again next spring. Also on the track team, Yeo has been to state for the 800 where she placed eighth overall. As she looks ahead, Yeo said she would like to play soccer in college but is unsure of where she will attend. “As of now, I’m just trying to keep my options open by keeping my grades high and improving my skills,” she said. Unsure of a career path, Yeo said she is interested in the field of psychology. “I love learning about how people think, why they do what they do, and the way our minds work,” she said. One of the biggest challenges Yeo has had to overcome is an injury to her eye her freshman year which has left her eye permanently damaged with a blind spot in her peripheral vision. While it took some getting used to, she said she has not let it affect her play. Yeo is grateful to her soccer coach, Conor Baranski, for teaching her confidence. He encouraged her and taught her the importance of positive thinking. She credits her track coach, Angie Brass, with also teaching her the importance of positive thinking. “Angie challenged me to think more positively and that is the reason I succeeded my freshman year of track and my sophomore season of soccer,” said Yeo.
