UPDATING YOUR KITCHEN?
EVERY SPRING, THE KITCHEN and bath industry releases the most popular trends thus far in the year. They get their data from those in the design profession based on what they are designing and selling most. Here’s what the trends are revealing so far for 2016. White is the most popular kitchen color. White is in almost everyone’s kitchen. Cabinets, countertops, sink, appliances, backsplash, etc. This is because white presents itself as “clean,” but it also gives space a larger feel. We are seeing more and more shades of white incorporated with gray, black and variations of blues. Wood is the number one material of choice – butcher block, cabinets, wood flooring, and trims. Even if cabinets are white, most painted cabinets are maple wood. Quartz is the number one material for countertops. Quartz is the Cadillac of countertops. It’s non-porous, which means nothing can penetrate it (think salmonella). It’s antimicrobial, requires no maintenance, so no re-sealing it every year and is very durable. There are some incredible patterns, but is also available in a more uniform pattern range if you want something simple. The number one must-have for a kitchen is an island, according to 82 percent of the kitchen design professionals surveyed. A close second must-have is a recycling center. This can be a pull-out trash compartment, a corner recycling cube that has multiple canisters or just a space in the kitchen dedicated to recycling. I’ve seen holes cut in the top of countertops so that customers don’t have to pull open a trash can to just drop something into the canister below. This is popular in commercial restrooms and kitchens, but now that’s even being incorporated into residential applications. The number one appliance used in the kitchen

is the sink. On average, it’s frequented between 10 to 30 times each day. You can spend thousands of dollars on new appliances, so put the kitchen sink in with that same level of importance. People are asking for more organic design, using salvaged materials and recycled woods. Just take a walk through furniture stores, kitchen design showrooms, and watch a little television and you’ll see examples of this. We are even seeing an increase in people ordering new cabinets with vintage finishes. Outdoor kitchens are in more demand. We have seen this and encourage using stainless steel cabinets. Also, we have countertops that are specifically made for outdoor use. They won’t fade in the sun and you won’t have to worry about the freeze-thaw factor and any cracking. Also, they are highly resistant to fire and heat. This kind of material is not limited to outdoor countertop use though. It is available in flooring, tiles, interior countertops as well.

Most new construction does not incorporate the formal dining room as part of their base floor plans. Most people prefer the open floor plan concept where the kitchen, living and dining rooms share one common area without walls providing division with doorways. People are also downsizing. Minimal area needed for storage and living space is ideal without all the extra bedrooms. With things like murphy beds and open floor plans, you can still accommodate guests, but not have a lot of wasted square footage with guest rooms and dining rooms that only get used a few times a year. Smart use of space helps eliminate the need for additional square footage, in turn saving your money. It’ll be fun to see how these trends continue to shape and develop our design styles throughout the summer and into this fall.

A major focus for the staff at Moose Valley Farms is educating their customers about their purchase. Too much water, not enough sun, or planting in the wrong season can all turn out bad for the plant and the planter. The staff stays up to date and shares their knowledge not only at the Greenhouse, but in the community as well. Elementary through high school aged children take field trips here to learn about planting, and Cindi teaches master gardening classes in both Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry. Moose Valley staff teaches through the University of Idaho extension program as well. “Giving back to the community is important to Moose Valley, not only in giving monetary and tangible donations, but volunteering their time and resources as well,” said Cindi. Whether you’re a certified green thumb or can’t seem to get even your grass to grow straight, the staff at Moose Valley Farms is ready to help you with whatever the project. If you don’t feel like planting, swing through the ever expanding gift shop that includes novelties, signs, home décor, sweets and other unique items. CODY BALDREE: GROWING UP FOR MOST of her life in Arizona, Cody Baldree did not initially have the desire to pursue softball. “I used to make the excuse that it would ‘be too hot, wearing those long pants’ in the Arizona heat...But my dad got me to play, and I just went from there,” said the recent Sandpoint graduate.

Since moving to Idaho, Cody has played for Sandpoint High School as well as with North Idaho Xtreme for three years. The Xtreme was nationally ranked as a top five team by USA Preps.

In the fall Cody will attend Chapman University in Orange City, California where she will study molecular biology. “I have not decided yet if I will play in college, but Chapman has a softball team that competes at the D3 level, so it is a plausible opportunity,” she said, adding that one day she would like to participate in the Peace Corps and travel overseas. When asked what she enjoys most about softball, Cody said it was difficult to pick just one aspect. “It really is just the game itself. I have always loved playing,” said Cody. “In the end, it has been the opportunities that softball has given me, including traveling across the country for tournaments, meeting world renowned coaches, and making incredible friendships, as well as learning tools to help me in the future.”

MATTHEW CURTISS: A TWO-SPORT ATHLETE, recent Sandpoint High School graduate Matthew Curtiss does what it takes to succeed in both tennis and basketball by working hard all year round. “A life lesson that basketball has taught me is having a good work ethic,” said Matthew. “Coming into the gym every day in the summer has really taught me that you can’t ever succeed at something unless you put a lot of work in.” Born in Estes Park, Colorado, Matthew grew up for most of his life in Sandpoint and has played basketball since the third grade. He has excelled in tennis and won districts this year with doubles partner Patrick Rockwell. They went onto State where they beat Blackfoot 6-4, 6-1 before losing to Century. It was quite an impressive accomplishment, especially considering Matthew has only played tennis for 18 months. In the fall Mathew will attend Boise State University where he plans to major in business and hopes to one day have his own business. Matthew shares that one of the biggest challenges he has faced athletically is his size. “I was very short in middle school and my freshman year so I just had to adapt and play smarter than the other players because of my short height,” said Matthew. And when asked what he enjoys most about sports, Matthew turns to his love of basketball and says it is the competitive and intense aspect of the game.
