Ensuring a strong foundation paves

By Lisa Paull, Certified Personal Tr Program Director at PneuThera in S WHERE IS YOUR PAIN? Are you experiencing sciatica, knee pain, back pain, plantar fasciitis, or shin splints? Weekend warriors, star athletes, and couch potatoes all experience chronic or acute physical pain at some time. What causes the inception of pain? Where is its foundation?

If you tried to build a house on an unbalanced foundation, the walls would not be stable. Depending upon the severity of the imbalance, you either could not build the walls at all, or eventually they would fall, bringing the roof down with it. This is what we do when we tell ourselves that all we need to do is exercise or lose weight and all our pain will go away. We try to “fix” ourselves by building on an unstable and unbalanced foundation - our body. The original imbalances can come from an injury, overuse, or misuse of our body. Our muscles and skeletal system are all connected, myofacial meridians running throughout organizing the structural forces required for motion. The compensation our body imposes to account for the imbalances affect the functioning of the entire system. A neuromuscular process known as reciprocal inhibition illustrates that when a muscle is activated, the opposing muscles are inhibited; they are turned off or shut down. For example, if the quad is tight, even though it might not feel bothersome to you, the hamstrings sense that muscle engagement and become slightly inhibited. We are asking the hamstring to do its normal functions, but as it is firing a bit later or not contracting to full capacity, it can become tight and strained. How many of us sit throughout the day and then sleep with our knees up and hips flexed? Tight hip flexors are common and as they work in conjunction with the calf muscles and

structures of the foot to allow dorsiflexion (the flexion of the foot upwards allowing for a proper heel strike) they are culprits in plantar fasciitis. The opposing gluteal muscles will be slower to engage, affecting hamstring function and hip movement. The hamstring attaches to the pelvis and depends on it to rotate with our gait to coincide with the contraction of the muscle. Altered gait and movement of the pelvis in turn is connected with low back pain. Postural deficits such as forward lean and excessive lumbar curve put undue pressure on the low back and contribute to low back pain. Forward head positioning and tight muscles of the neck, shoulder, and upper back may be the source of recurrent headaches. These examples are but a few, making us aware of the fact that where we feel the pain may not necessarily be the reason for our discomfort. It is important to have a thorough assessment to evaluate imbalances in the body before taking on an exercise program. Tight muscles need to be identified and relaxed as well as weaker muscles strengthened. Don’t exacerbate the problems by trying the “quick fix”. Once you find balance in your body, your exercise and strength programs will help you maintain posture and stay pain free. FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL JESSICA @ 208.290.4959

Northwest Auto Body and Towing gives of their time and resources by participating in volunteer work and contributing to charities and events. Some of their community involvement includes repairing animal shelter vehicles, volunteering their own facility for use by Mom’s in Need for the Church, participating in Friends of the Pend d’ Oreille Bay Trial, providing volunteer work at the community center and a great deal more. Northwest Auto Body and Towing has been a family owned and operated business for nearly 40 years. Owner and operator Eric Donenfeld was born and raised in Idaho. When given the opportunity to work with his father and brother, he jumped at the chance. “I moved away for a year, only to come back and realize how good it is in Sandpoint,” he said. Some of his favorite activities in Sandpoint include and are not limited to: fishing, biking, skiing, wakeboarding, sailing and most all water sports. “All the Sandpoint favorites,” he said with a smile. Eric explained that his father, Mel Donenfeld, started the business in 1975. Mel and his two sons Eric and Cory are now owners of the family business. Eric works at the Ponderay facility while Cory works at the Sandpoint

IT’S SPRING, and in Sandpoint that means it’s time for the official kickoff to summer! Dust off those penny loafers and saddle shoes and prepare to enjoy a very special Sandpoint tradition. It’s a time of year we all look forward to, no matter what your age. A time to turn back the clocks to a simpler time. Lost in the 50s is in its 29th year, and thanks to the dedication and hard work of Sandpoint resident Carolyn Gleason and her countless volunteers, it continues to be a favorite of many. From May 15th through the 18th, everyone from baby boomers down to toddlers will don poodle skirts, penny loafers and rolled up jeans. Downtown will be rocking to the music of Elvis, Ricky Nelson, The Platters and Fats Domino. But it’s not just a Sandpoint tradition. People come from all over to revel in the glory of the 1950s. Each year Tawnie and Brent Sleep, owners of Sleep’s Cabins, host a group from Edmonton, Alberta. The couple always looks forward to their visit. “This will be their eighth or ninth year, and we usually have 12 to 15 (vintage) cars that come with them,” said Tawnie. While the Canadian visitors used to take two days to make the trip, a couple of years ago they started making the trek in one day, arriving on Tuesday the week of the events, eager to enjoy all that Sandpoint has to offer. “We wait for them every year. They are a hoot,” said Tawnie. The visitors have

$ grown to love the area so much, in fact, that many of them also come during the summer months and bring the entire family. This year’s Lost in the 50s will kick off on Thursday, May 15th as the Panida Theater will again host Rock ‘n Roll Heaven starting at 7pm. Always a sellout, it is a great musical performance that sets the mood for the weekend. On Friday, car enthusiasts will be busy buffing their cars as they prepare for the Cruise that will begin at Sandpoint High School and travel through the downtown streets to the excitement of those, young and old, who line the streets. And be sure and stay downtown following the parade to enjoy a street dance at Jeff Jones Square immediately following the parade. Saturday morning the downtown will be turned into a showcase for vintage cars as the annual car show gets underway at 9am, with car staging beginning at 7am. For those 21 and older, there will be a chance to enjoy a show and dance at the Fairgrounds on Saturday evening with doors opening at 6:30pm. All the fun wraps up on Sunday with the infamous Aspirin Rally-Run, a 5K fun run and car rally at Second Avenue Pizza in Sandpoint. So no matter what your age, be sure to stop by one of the many Lost in the 50s events. You’ll be glad you did!
