Subtle updates make for an easy refresh

As the days continue to get longer and the temperatures slowly warmer, our urge to spend more time outside grows as well. Spring is a time of renewal, and for many that often includes decluttering, organizing and freshening up our homes both inside and out. We have a few precious months to spend outside before the bite of fall hits again. It’s paramount to enjoy these long warm days, and there are several small improvements you can do both indoors and out to make this summer even more enjoyable.

While yard work isn’t the top priority of most homeowners, simplifying your landscaping will help limit the amount of time you spend weeding, raking, and hauling lawn debris away in the future. Communities all across the West are asking residents to conserve water. Droughts in the Southwest have strained watersheds, and though the Northwest isn’t suffering the same shortages, water conservation is still top of mind. Keeping a lawn and landscape green can take a tremendous amount of water, especially in between rainstorms. Replacing your landscaping with droughtresistant plants and grasses not only decreases your water use, but lowers your water

bill and, in some cases, can even qualify you for a regional tax incentive.

There are many kinds of plants, tall and short decorative grasses, as well as herbs and ground cover that require much less water to thrive. When planting, keep things close together to help shade the soil and protect the moisture barrier. Also, be sure to cover the soil with porous rocks, or mulch. Professional gardeners and landscapers in your area will also be familiar with native plants to specific regions and can offer more detailed recommendations.

If you want to rid yourself of mowing entirely, you might consider artificial turf. Materials have come a long way since the spongy bright green surfaces we most associate with baseball and soccer fields. Today’s turf is tailored to many situations depending on use; everything from durable high traffic to kids/pets, to decorative gardens. There are three main materials used: nylon, which feels most like natural grass but is not as durable; polypropylene, which is highly durable but does not have the same natural look as nylon; or polyethylene, which has a more natural look and is easier for pet clean-up and light usage. While more expensive than sod, the

way. Vertical tool racks are also an easy way to keep your rakes, shovels and brooms upright, taking up as little space as possible. You’ll be amazed at how much space you’ll save by putting in a wall-mounted bike rack, and the tried-and-true peg board is an easy place to store and see small tools. Finally, tuck away kid toys, decorations, seasonal goods, camping equipment, etc. in large plastic tubs and place them on your shelving. Just be sure to label each.

While an entire home exterior paint job might be out of the budget, a few simple upgrades can also freshen up your home’s curbside appearance. Start with a new mailbox, something that speaks to your personality. Next, try updating your address numbers to something more modern. While you are at it, paint or stain the front door. Finally, take your porch or garage lights to the next level with LED lighting, which can change colors dependent on your mood or the season with a simple swipe of your phone.

While there is seemingly always some improvement we can make to our living spaces, summer is not the time to get bogged down with a month’s long project. Give your home a small refresh this spring, and you’ll be ready for an even more enjoyable summer.

Elevated Essentials is the perfect place to find all of your aromatherapy needs. Our collection of diffusers and essential oils sourced from Bulgaria, India, and Bangladesh will leave your space feeling refreshed and invigorated.

THE HEIGHT OF CARE AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Meet Sandpoint’s most reliable roofing/siding/gutter professionals

Jorn and Dinah Reger are the proud owners of Summit Exteriors, a family-owned business in Sandpoint. While Dinah was raised in North Idaho, Jorn was born in Germany and lived most of his life in Canada. They moved to Sandpoint to start their family and business in 2021. “Sandpoint is beautiful, and we wanted our kids to grow up in the beauty of North Idaho,” Jorn says.

Jorn’s inspiration to start his own business was driven by his desire to change the stereotype of construction. “I worked on many construction crews doing roofing and other trades and had to deal with listening to horrible language and talk, the ‘good enough’ attitude, and little appreciation for the work or the client,” he recalls. “I wanted to change this and decided that going out on my own was the best choice for me. Roofing and siding were the skills I knew best and stuck with. Our desire in our business is to honor the client, show off our craftsmanship, and provide customers with an experience like none other.”

Unlike other similar companies that employ cheaper subcontractors from out of state, Summit Exteriors prides itself on employing locals, including many of Jorn and Dinah’s family members. “Our crews do quality work on the roof, siding, or gutters of your house, but that is not where we stop,” affirms Jorn. “We have thorough communication and follow-up, a commitment to any warranty work, and care for your property—all of which cannot be achieved with a simple attitude of ‘just get the work done.’”

They firmly believe that they’ve quickly found success in their business thanks to their experienced and professional in-house crews who are living out Summit Exteriors’ principles and values. “We can talk all we want from the office about how awesome they are, but they have the ability to show up and live it,” Jorn says proudly. “We can finish a project, knowing we did amazing work, and see the completed project being appreciated by the client.”

And, of course, there are the customers. “We are nothing without them,” adds Jorn. “We get our drive from always pushing the limit on value.”

When it comes to what Jorn, Dinah, and the rest of the Summit Exteriors team enjoy most about being part of the Sandpoint community, it’s seeing firsthand the support of those who want to see their dollars stay local.

When not working on their next roofing, siding, or gutter project, you can find many of Summit Exteriors’ crew members actively involved in our local churches, taking part in youth groups and outreach opportunities. In addition, their crews represent the business on sports teams, many of which Summit Exteriors sponsors.

If you’re looking for the number one local choice when it comes to receiving the highest quality residential and commercial exterior services, look no further than Summit Exteriors. Jorn invites you to contact him today for a free consultation.

Top tips to declutter and freshen up your space

Spring is here, and it’s time to open up the windows, and let in that fresh air! Which will, no doubt, invigorate you with new springy energy. All that nonsense of snuggling up in the oversized chair, next to the fire, under a pile of your favorite books, is over. It’s time to put on a pair of shoes (with socks), brush your hair and shake off the winter sluggishness. All your winter blues are forgotten upon the arrival of sweet sunshine. No doubt this new attitude will inspire a general tidying of winter’s clutter—clutter that has grown into a much larger pile than you thought. It makes sense that you might have to store heavy blankets on higher shelves, or bag up your winter sweaters, but when oh when did you get comfortable just grabbing clean clothes unfolded directly from the couch? Here are six tips to get you started on your cleaning frenzy right!

24 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023

Create Space.

This is easier said than done, but every home has unused space. It just takes a little creativity to unlock it. Look around your home and notice the blank spaces: the walls, the windowsills or the ceiling are great starts. For example, in the kitchen, pots and pans are easily hung from the ceiling and look especially lovely over an island. Little corner nooks can hold corner shelves, where a potted plant might fit just right. The point is to get things off the floor or counter, and up in the light.

Prioritize Action Items.

What within your house gets you moving and active? What gets your kids moving and active? Start by creatively fitting out those spaces for efficiency. One such example might be the door/entry area. The windowsills or walls can be outfitted with heavy duty hooks, each designated to a member of the household for all their bags, scarves, light jackets, etc. Another often busy space is the dinner table, which also doubles as the art and homework table. A rolling caddy full of art supplies, pencils and paper is a wonderful way to organize your table for activity.

Appreciate Meaningful Items.

It’s time to put things that are precious to you out into the light, so that your space reminds you of your happy experiences. However, all those small knickknacks, pictures, sentimental baby clothes and toys can’t just be laid out or they’ll catch dust. Consider framing items that you really appreciate. Another useful idea for organizing meaningful items that rotate (think of all those cute pictures your children draw) is to pull a string across a wall and clothespin items along the line. A drawer or an attic is hardly the place for things that remind you of your most precious memories.

Organize According to Use.

Any one space, corner, closet or shelf has a purpose, and everything has its place. A home is functional as much as it is livable. For example: Make cleaning easier by putting regularly used cleaning supplies in a grab-and-go caddy. The caddy can be pulled (or carried) in and out of wherever you put it, easily cleaned and emptied, and is easily brought from one room to the next. This tip is also useful in the kitchen, which can easily be divided into sections with items stored according to use (baking, stovetop, beverage, etc.).

Beautify Your Clutter Spaces.

This doesn’t mean get rid of them. Or even clean them out. Every house has spots where stuff just collects. Instead of shunning those spaces by closing them up, embrace them as necessary. The junk drawer can be beautified by separating necessary household items into various small baskets (batteries in one basket, sharpies in the other). The basket method can also be used to catch stuff in various clutter corners, to be cleaned out and put away when you have the time.

Declutter Sustainably.

Start by thinking of some simple rules to follow to ensure that your house stays less cluttered throughout the flurry of spring and summer activity. The “eight-minute rule” is one such example. The rule is simple: For longer chores that require dedicated time, set a timer for eight minutes. At the end of eight minutes, you may not be done with all the window washing or dusting, but you will have put a real dent in what may need to be done over the weekend.

Following some, or all, of these tips will help make next year’s spring cleaning all that much easier!

Pepper the Service Dog

Local school taken by storm

Pepper the service dog at Farmin Stidwell Elementary (the first and only therapy dog in the district) is taking the community by storm, one connection at a time. She is at the elementary school two to three days a week, and boy is she busy when she’s in! All the kids love her and look forward to the days that she’s in office. Whether the kiddos need some extra snuggles to calm down, a pet to lift their spirits, a nonjudgmental ear to listen to their woes, or some help with literacy, Pepper is there to lend a paw.

Pepper’s story begins with Ellen Wassif and her family. Both she and her husband are licensed therapists who work in differing areas of expertise. Ellen has worked at Farmin Stidwell Elementary for several years and has experience with the benefits of therapy dogs in different professional capacities. “We have always wanted a therapy dog with us at work, so when we were looking to get a dog for our family, we looked into adopting a young dog. This would allow us to train the dog for therapy work but also just to have a fun dog with us at home,” says Ellen.

There’s never a complete guarantee that a dog will pass the high standards of training required for therapy animals, so it’s important that owners enjoy the dog simply because they enjoy dogs. Ellen and her family were no exception.

32 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023
For obvious reasons, she was an instant sensation. Everyone wanted to say hello at once .

When Ellen approached the school administration with the idea of having a therapy dog with her at the school, she put together a whole presentation of the benefits the dog could bring to the school and its students. When Ellen and her family adopted Pepper from the Northwest Boxer Rescue, they were prepared to put a lot of their own investments into making sure that her training was successful. Over the course of a year and a half, the family invested their own funds and time to train Pepper, after which, they succeeded in certification through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Ellen also spent quite a bit of time and effort training students the parameters of appropriate interaction with the new friendly presence on campus.

Rules for interaction with Pepper include three students at a time are allowed to approach, with pets lasting no more than 10 seconds. Children often count out loud to make sure that everyone gets a turn. Students aren’t allowed to get out of line

to greet Pepper but are allowed to wave during class transitions. Regardless, the eventual arrival of Pepper still caused quite a stir. For obvious reasons, she was an instant sensation. Everyone wanted to say hello at once. Nowadays, both students and staff have adjusted to Pepper’s presence to the point that she is simply a regular and positive part of everyday school life.

The administration has been overwhelmingly supportive of Ellen and Pepper; their trust has garnered a host of benefits to students and staff. Pepper has made a big difference in the overall morale of students, as well as helped Ellen manage and resolve negative emotions. “Some kids will feel uncomfortable talking to me about how they feel, but they’ll come in to talk to Pepper,” says Ellen. She has a space in her office dedicated to Pepper, where students can sit and Pepper will hop up and lay her head on the student’s lap, lending a compassionate and nonjudgmental ear. Pepper is also used as an incentive for

33 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023

students to encourage good behavior, because everyone wants to be able to take some time to meet Pepper in her space and read a book. In fact, aiding in literacy is one of Pepper’s main jobs at the school.

“Research shows that if kids don’t reach literacy by third grade, they easily fall behind in all subjects,” says Ellen. Thankfully Pepper is there to help kids not fall behind. The Panhandle Alliance for Education (P.A.F.E) offers grants to schools for additional education programs. Their grant has allowed for the school to purchase supplies for the R.E.A.D. with Pepper, a program for reading. Students visit Pepper and choose one of the many books within their grade level that were purchased with funds from the P.A.F.E. grant. After 10 books, students are allowed to choose a book “signed” by Pepper to keep. It is a huge hit with students and is making a big difference in their lives every day.

It’s no wonder, then, that Pepper is a local celebrity, with a growing Instagram following. Thanks to Ellen and her family, the supportive administration at Farmin Stidwell Elementary, the grant from the Panhandle Alliance for Education and, of course, Pepper, our children are given a greater opportunity for confidence in their successes, ultimately culminating in a better outlook for their futures.

“Some kids will feel uncomfortable talking to me about how they feel, but they’ll come in to talk to Pepper.”

Erin Roos is possibly one of the most decorated athletes to ever come from Sandpoint High School (SHS). Yet, today, as an SHS teacher and former head volleyball coach, Erin’s appreciation for her alma mater and her impact on the school district go far beyond the success she has had on the court.

During the early ‘90s, Erin starred for the Bulldogs as a setter, leading Sandpoint to a state runner-up finish in her senior year and earning a full-ride scholarship to play at the University of Michigan, where she became a four-year letter winner and still ranks in the top 10 in assists in program history.

After college, Erin married her husband Mike, a fellow ‘93 SHS graduate, and the couple moved back to North Idaho. Around this time, Erin also discovered a passion for working with young adults and began coaching, something she has now done for the past 25 years.

“It’s rewarding to be able to pass along knowledge and skills to student-athletes, as well as assist them in working through the challenges that come with sports,” Erin said.

Currently, Erin is the Mentors teacher at SHS, teaching the school’s Real Life 101 and 201 classes, which focus on students’ life management skills and highlight financial literacy.

Erin’s Mentors class is comprised of 45 upperclassmen and helps students to intentionally engage with one another to

create a safe, fun and welcoming culture at SHS by planning and facilitating monthly connections and school-wide events.

“A connected group of students and adults increases the likelihood that students will attend school, feel safe, supported, and get the most out of their educational experience,” Erin noted. “A connected school is a healthy school.”

When she is not teaching, Erin also works with many student-athletes as a sports performance coach, teaching them how to navigate the mental side of the game so they can stay positive and perform at a high level.

“Ultimately, no matter how physically talented an athlete is, if they can’t manage their mind and emotions, they will always be outperformed,” Erin explained.

Erin spent four years (2014-2018) as the SHS head volleyball coach before stepping down to be more engaged with Mike and her three sons.

Aside from school and coaching, Erin loves to enjoy the outdoor beauty of Bonner County, whether she is paddleboarding and kayaking, hiking and snow skiing, or watching her sons compete in athletics.

“We chose to raise our family here and be part of the school system and youth athletics because there is so much value in living in a small town where we all treat each other like friends and family,” Erin added.

STUDE NTS IN

“I was so fortunate to be on the same team as [Dawson] and eventually started to play with her,” Daylee explained. “That experience really influenced me to push myself and work for where I want to be in the program and always have a good attitude about it.”

Following her sister’s graduation and departure to play at nearby Whitworth University, Daylee continued to grow each season. She earned All-League honors as a junior, helped guide SHS to state tournament appearances four years in a row, and most recently, captained the Bulldogs to their first 4A Girls Basketball State Championship in school history.

While Daylee has made strides on the court, her biggest growth has come as a vocal leader for the Bulldogs.

As a freshman at Sandpoint High School (SHS), Daylee Driggs had the unique opportunity to play on the same basketball team as her older sister, Dawson.

That season (2019-2020), Daylee gained valuable experience as she watched her sister earn the 4A Inland Empire League (IEL) Most Valuable Player award and lead the Bulldogs to an IEL championship and fourth-place finish at state.

“I used to be the type to shy away from obstacles and not voice my thoughts or ideas to the team because I was scared it would be mistaken,” Daylee remembered. “Today, I believe I’m a powerful team captain who talks to all teammates and positively says what I think would be best for the whole team. I feel like they can trust me, and also younger kids could come talk to me as well.”

With Daylee and fellow senior Kelsey Cessna providing veteran leadership, Sandpoint finished 15-5 in the regular season this year and went on to become district and state champions.

“We get so connected toward the end of the season, and it is so amazing that I get to make new friendships out of a hobby I love so much,” Daylee said.

Aside from basketball, Daylee loves to be outside and spend time with her family, whether they are surfing, swimming or hiking.

After high school, Daylee is considering studying business at a four-year school before potentially going to cosmetology school in the future. Wherever she ends up, Sandpoint will always be her home.

“I’m very thankful to have grown up in a town like this and can’t wait to revisit it when I’m older,” Daylee said.

THE SPOTLIGHT

As the Student Body president at Sandpoint High School, senior Alex Manning is involved in many of the extracurricular events and activities taking place at the school.

In all the roles and responsibilities that he has assumed over the course of his high school career, Alex is driven by his strong faith and desire to serve others.

“Being in leadership is one of the greatest honors someone could have,” Alex explained. “I love being a servant first and remembering that I’m doing things for others and not for myself—serving on the [student] council as the president is the most incredible honor.”

Alex grew up in Sandpoint and spent the entirety of his academic years in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. He credits many of his teachers and mentors throughout the years as being big influences in his life.

“In every one of my grades, God has brought people into my life who have helped and shaped the kind of person [God] has created

me to be,” Alex said. “My parents and grandparents have been a major influence in my life, but so have many teachers, coaches, managers and friends. Above all, my growth has been most influenced by Jesus Christ and my faith in the freedom that He offers all of us.”

When Alex is not leading a student council meeting or running events like the recent “Battle for the Paddle” spirit competition, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling to see new places, trying new foods, and meeting people. During the summer, Alex enjoys working for Festival at Sandpoint, and last year he had the opportunity to be a site manager for the event, which gave him many valuable experiences.

Alex also loves the beauty of North Idaho and appreciates the local government and school leaders that make Sandpoint what it is.

“I love living in Idaho, as I highlight to many of my friends and family,” Alex said. “We live in one of the most extraordinary states in this union.”

After graduation, Alex plans to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he will study government politics and policy.

He hopes to work in local or state government one day and potentially return to Bonner County eventually to serve many of the people who have invested so much in him.

“[The Sandpoint community] poured so much into my life,” Alex exclaimed. “And I pray that one day [this community] will give me the privilege of serving and working for [it] from our local government to the state level.”

Pend Oreille Pedalers paving the way for cyclist enthusiasts of all ages

40 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023

What began in the mid-2000s with the purpose of providing local cyclists fun and engaging opportunities in the way of social rides on area trails—such as Gold Hill, Mineral Point, and further afield around Priest Lake and in the wild mountains of the Idaho Panhandle—Pend Oreille Pedalers (POP) has evolved over the years to encompass so much more.

“Starting in 2007, the focus began to turn to developing new trails closer to Sandpoint,” shares Jason Welker, POP’s executive director. “While North Idaho is blessed with hundreds, if not thousands, of miles of dirt trails, almost all of it lies out of reach of the pedalpowered recreationalist.”

That same year, a local family put their 120-acre property, known as Sherwood Forest, into a permanent conservation easement and invited POP into the woods to begin building non-motorized trails. “Over the next several years, the seeds of what has since grown into the much more expansive Syringa Trail System were planted by those dedicated volunteers of what you could call ‘POP 1.0,’” smiles Jason.

Today, the Syringa System includes two additional properties—Pine Street Woods (PSW) and VTT—which combined with Sherwood

Forest provide local trail users with more than 16 miles of dedicated biking and hiking trails across 400 acres of community forest. POP built or assisted in the construction of every foot of trail in that system and continues to build and maintain trails in VTT and PSW today.

Jason first joined POP as a member about a decade ago, while he was still teaching in international schools and spending summers in his house on Schweitzer. He moved to Sandpoint full time in 2017. “As a mountain biker and trail lover, POP was an easy community to slide into,” Jason recalls. “In 2020, after serving on the board for a year, I signed on as the club’s first executive director—a role in which I organize all club activities, programs, projects and events.”

Since then, membership has grown from less than 200 to nearly 800! During this time, they’ve launched youth programs and built over 15 miles of new trails. POP also supports or hosts three different bike races each year, leads over 30 weekly group rides, approximately a dozen road rides, and 30-plus volunteer trail work parties each year. “In addition, my grant writing work has brought in over $100,000 to fund new trail development in the Syringa and Lower Basin trail systems since 2019,” says Jason.

through 12; the only prerequisite is that your child be able to ride a bike. “Starting this year, you don’t even have to own a bike to participate, because POP is offering 15 bike grants and scholarships throughout the year,” shares Jason. “Through a community fundraising effort last summer, we raised over $9,000 to purchase high-end Trek mountain bikes, which we will give to five local kids along with scholarships to one of our programs during each session: spring, summer and fall.” Registration for the spring program will open early April, and for those interested in receiving a scholarship and bike grant, there will be an application process.

POP keeps those in the cycling community connected throughout the year in several ways. Club meetings kick off on the second Wednesday in April (and continue through October) at 5:30pm at Matchwood Brewing. Anyone who is interested in learning about the cycling and trail development scene in Sandpoint should attend. “Or, if you’re new to the area and want to meet some cool folks over beers, there’s no better place to be than a monthly POP meeting,” smiles Jason. They offer weekly group rides and trail work parties. They are also very active on Instagram and Facebook, and send out weekly newsletters to their members during the biking season.

Jason encourages those with a passion for bikes and trails to join Pend Oreille Pedalers. Membership starts at $25 and includes POP activities, meetings, opportunity to enroll their kids in the after-school and summer programs, “and earn ‘trail karma’ by helping support the local trails,” he affirms.

NIBCA Home & Garden Show comes to the fairgrounds

It’s time to say goodbye to winter and hello spring, as the official start of spring is just around the corner. Though it might feel like winter for a few more weeks than we’d like, if you’re looking to get in the spring spirit, then make plans to attend the the North Idaho Home & Garden Show in Sandpoint, presented by the North Idaho Building Contractors Association (NIBCA).

“We worked with National to include Bonner County into our territory and were granted this last year,” shares Emily Bradley, executive officer for the North Idaho Building Contractors Association.

From beautiful landscaped gardens and plants to home improvement contractors, there is something for everyone, as the show brings homeowners together with the area’s top building experts and remodelers, who will be on hand to share their valuable knowledge that will bring your ideas to life ... or inspire new ones.

At the NIBCA Home & Garden Show, where all are invited to attend, attendees can expect face-to-face interaction with professionals who can assist you with your home service and improvement needs.

“We will have an education stage to give tips on home financing, remodel, safety and improvement,” adds Emily.

The highlight of the weekend, according to Emily, is the opportunity to meet the people who could potentially be working on your home. “It helps build trust and lifelong friendships with members of the community,” she smiles.

When it comes to what NIBCA hopes attendees will walk away with after attending the Home & Garden Show, Emily affirms it’s the contacts they’ll make. “When planning a large renovation, or repair, it’s important to do your homework on quality, professionalism and experience. This event allows for those connections to be made.”

The show makes its way to the Bonner County Fairgrounds the first weekend of April. Show dates and hours are 10am to 6pm Saturday, April 1, and 10am to 4pm Sunday, April 2. (NIBCA’s Coeur d’Alene

Home & Garden Show takes place a month prior, March 3 through 5, at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.) Choose to attend one–or both! Though the event is free to attend, they are asking those in attendance to donate non-perishable food items to benefit the local food bank.

North Idaho Building Contractors Association is an advocacy group that hosts local events, and the Home & Garden Show features NIBCA’s associate members—those who support builders from lending/real estate to the trades such as plumbing, electrical, painting, and much more. “This assists us in our mission of protecting and promoting the building industry in North Idaho,” Emily notes.

HOME DESIGN TRENDS Nod to Nature

WELCOMING HOME DESIGN TRENDS THAT MIX THE OLD AND NEW WITH THE BEAUTY AND WARMTH OF NATURAL MATERIALS AND BOLD

OPTIMISTIC COLORS

50 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL march/april 2023

Each spring, new flower buds emerge from the long-dormant earth, basking the world in color and sparking feelings of renewal, change and fresh starts. Spring is nature’s gentle way of shaking us awake after a period of hibernation—inspiring and energizing us with longer days and more sunlight. While some opt for traditional spring cleaning, others embrace the nudge offered by the season change and choose to rejuvenate their living spaces.

The prospect of design updates often brings visions of the family and friends you’ll host and the memories you’ll make in your new space. As you start researching design trends, it’s easy to get lost down the neverending Pinterest rabbit hole. The countless options and opinions can quickly become overwhelming, causing major decision paralysis. You want your space to feel like it belongs in this decade (or century), but trends can be fleeting, and any significant changes need to withstand the test of time.

Your home is a personal space—it should be a calm and comforting place that considers your lifestyle and reflects what you like. Connecting with the earth and bringing a feeling of groundedness into your home is reflected in the home design trends this year. People are seeking stability and peace within their homes, reaching for warm neutrals with pops of rich colors, natural materials and versatile pieces that make you feel safe, comfortable and inspired.

A place we often start when considering a home redesign is colors—and not just paint. Wallpaper with bold patterns and textures add visual interest to a myriad of surfaces throughout the house. Colors affect our mood, emotions and energy level, making them an important factor in aesthetic and overall vibe.

While neutrals have a timeless appeal, people are ditching the cool white and gray colors for creamy earth tones that give off a homey feeling and warmer brown shades that anchor the space and make us feel more grounded. Sherwin Williams’ announced their color of the year as Redend Point (SW 9081)), a romantic warm neutral that embodies all things cozy and tranquil.

51
The prospect of design updates often brings visions of the family and friends you ’ll host and the memories you ’ll make in your new space.

MOSSY AND DEEP SHADES OF GREEN ARE ALMOST CONSIDERED NEUTRAL FOR THEIR VERSATILITY.

Paired with creamier neutrals are bold colors that elicit a desired emotion from the space. Soothing greens, deep blues and rich berry hues are taking center stage in 2023. Benjamin Moore chose a vibrant red-orange called Raspberry Blush (2008-30) as their color of the year for 2023—this bold and refreshing hue energizes a room for maximum impact. Mossy and deep shades of green are almost considered neutral for their versatility—used to upgrade furniture and décor or make a bold wall color while balancing a room.

Bringing natural elements into your home means embracing the inconsistencies, imperfections and unique beauty in raw, natural materials. Cookie-cutter design pieces from big-box stores made from synthetic materials are being replaced with a newfound (or renewed) appreciation for durable, long-lasting organic materials. Meaningfully investing in a few masterfully crafted pieces built for longevity is being more highly valued as people want a story or connection to the items they keep in their homes.

One of the most beautiful and often underappreciated design materials is front and center: natural wood. Furniture and design elements crafted from light- or mid-toned woods that lovingly embrace the natural artistry of high-contrast grains add warmth and texture to a room. Think 1960’s and 1970’s rich mahogany end tables or dark oak shelving. Even natural wood cabinets are making a comeback, mingling with natural stone to create a mixed material kitchen. Integrate other wood touches with wooden-legged chairs, swap out picture frames for wood versions, or display that one-of-a-kind wood carving you found in your grandma’s basement.

YOUR HOME SHOULD BE A PLACE WHERE

The desire to feel more grounded and connected with the earth means a shift from sterile white kitchens to natural materials, whimsical colors, patterns and textures. Natural stone slabs for kitchen countertops and backsplashes paired with dynamic colored cabinets and warm wood accents are inviting and functional to an area where families often congregate. While quartz remains a more economical choice, colorful marbles, soapstone and limestone with exaggerated, contrasting veining will become more prominent.

Not looking to do a complete overhaul? Swapping out your backsplash, painting your island a vibrant hue, or even installing a warm walnut butcher-block island makes a huge difference and doesn’t require construction.

After all the change and chaos of the past several years, there’s a general desire to reconnect with the things that really matter. Mixing vintage pieces into your contemporary space elicits a sense of nostalgic comfort and further personalizes your space. Adding meaningful objects such as heirloom pieces or sentimental items add character and depth to the space. Who doesn’t love a story about the antique table your great uncle brought all the way from Armenia? Pieces like these are part of your story and bring a sense of history into your home.

Even if you don’t have familial heirloom items, you can create the

look by thoughtfully picking out individual pieces that you love. Peruse an antique store for treasures, and refurbish them to make them your own. Or display unique trinkets, vases or sculptures found while traveling. Vintage furniture, heirloom accessories and one-of-a-kind, personalized pieces mix beautifully with modern styles and are more sustainable than short-term, disposable items. Combining antiques with a new, modern design can spark beloved memories while honoring a bygone era and adding timeless elegance to your space.

The architectural design and environment surrounding your home can also help inspire your design. A French country interior can feel out of place in a modern contemporary home, and a mid-century modern style can feel conflicted in a coastal beach house. Additionally, homes with ample shade from surrounding evergreen trees may select light-reflecting colors to brighten the interior. A home basking in warm, golden sunlight may need cool colors to balance the bright warmth.

While these home design trends are things to consider, they shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Your home should be a place where you feel relaxed and content; somewhere that reflects who you are and what you love.

Designing … and Building … Lifestyles

From inception to completion, husband-and-wife duo creates clients’ dream homes

Rob and Denise Krogman, owners of RDK Design and Build, strive to build custom residential homes that stand out from all others. Combined with their in-house custom finishes and furnishings, they can creatively add one-of-a-kind ideas that represent their clients’ unique personalities.

Since childhood, Rob has always had a passion for building. Growing up on a farm, he developed a strong work ethic early on and was always the first to volunteer when any building or carpentry opportunities presented themselves. “I have always known my career would involve building and creating,” he affirms. “I am a hands-on general contractor, and after all these years, I still enjoy working hard in the field.”

As the daughter of a commercial architect, Denise spent many days with her father at the drafting table, “so designing and building have always been a part of my life,” she reflects. With a strong passion and degrees in fashion and interior design, Denise, an Allied Member of ASID, has actively led complete floor-to-ceiling design projects in Arizona, Colorado, California and Idaho over the last 32 years. She first embarked on her television career in 2005 and co-created and hosted the Lifestyle program Fine Wine and Design. Denise has also designed interior sets for TV commercials and showrooms and has been published in several lifestyle magazines. “Designing and creating are all I have done and all I have ever wanted to do,” she smiles.

Rob and Denise worked in their respective businesses separately for many years—Denise owning another design firm for 24 years (though over 32 years in the business) and Rob running his own construction company for 18 years (with a total of 28 years of experience)—they came together and formed RDK Design and Build—a full-service custom home building and remodeling business—in 2015. With their combined background they bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, talent and passion to every residential and commercial project they are involved with. In spring of 2022, they relocated their business to North Idaho. Both raised in small Midwestern towns, the pair spent most of their adult lives living in very large cities in Colorado and Arizona—and found themselves yearning for that small community connection again. After visiting Sandpoint for several years, the couple soon realized that Sandpoint had everything they were looking for: a lake, ski mountain, quaint small-town feel, kind people … and a place for their business to continue to thrive. In August of 2021, they purchased a lot in The Idaho Club, officially making the move in April of 2022. They broke ground this past September and are currently building one of their custom designs as their personal residence here in North Idaho.

“Everyone we have met here, personally and professionally, has warmly welcomed us and have given us a great deal of support and kindness,” smiles Denise. “We are proud to be a part of the community and have so much respect for the local businesses and their customer care and loyalty.”

As a design and build company, the Krogmans combine construction and interior design into one streamlined process; guiding their clients through the design and build process; bringing their thoughts, ideas and dreams to life. Having worked in several states during their careers, their

project portfolio spans southwest to mountain, traditional to modern, and a blend of everything in between.

“Our design and build delivery method offers homeowners many benefits that add value and confidence to their project, as our design team assists with the timely selection and installation of finishes and fixtures to keep the project on track, and during construction, everything is carefully managed and communicated to make certain that each step runs smoothly and efficiently,” says Denise. “We want their projects to be theirs alone, and we feel our communication from inception to completion with our clients sets us apart from our competition. We have also built strong relationships with our trade partners and have developed much trust and many wonderful friendships with the homeowners.”

Being a husband-wife contractor/design duo, Rob and Denise are in constant communication with each other as well, both paying close attention to the details of each project. In addition, clients receive full-time interior design services at no extra cost when they choose RDK to build or remodel their homes.

Their services include: new build residential and commercial construction, full home remodel construction, residential and commercial interior design services, design and build consultations, and custom furnishing, lighting and accessories.

“What’s most important is that we both really love what we do. And we are thrilled we get to do it together,” smiles Denise. “Together, we work hard and creatively to ensure our clients also love what we have done for them. The true reward is in their excitement and happiness when the project is complete.”

Whether a new build or extensive remodel is in your future, let Rob and Denise lead the way—from inception to completion.

How Does Your

Gardening for your health

Garden Grow?

59

Gardening is an investment in your well-being. Vegetables, flowers, mushrooms, orchards or trees … whatever is planted well will thrive. And if it thrives, you thrive. The benefits of gardening are numerous: from an increased sense of wellness to healthy levels of vitamin D. The effort of gardening counts as exercise and the product of gardening often leads to an interest in eating healthier. No doubt about it, when you get outside to plant, you harvest health. Also, planting a garden is just beautiful. The scent of the apple blossoms carried on the wind acts as aromatherapy. The sight of green growing things encourages life under the ground and above it, from worms to bees and butterflies. It’s no wonder why we flock to forests, lakes and outdoor spaces at all times of the year. Gardening makes those outdoor spaces accessible just outside our door. Here are a few ways your garden can promote your everyday health.

First, ask yourself, “How does my garden grow?” Yes, it’s a children’s nursery rhyme, but it’s also a good rule of thumb when planning out your garden. You want the health benefits of your garden to last throughout the year, so it’s important to consider which plants will bring you the most joy. If you want the garden to benefit you every day, year-around, you have to plant a garden that you find sustainable. For some this means planting plants that seed themselves. Examples of such plants include potatoes,

onions, anything in the mint family, evergreens, and a huge variety of flowers. Self-seeding plants require very little tilling and maintenance, and practically thrive on their own.

Some gardens are made up of well-organized “weeds” (by far the easiest sort of garden to grow), which are exceptionally hardy in addition to being self-seeding. When growing exceptionally boisterous plants, you might consider planting in pots or plots. Examples include anything in the dandelion family, mints, many herbs, clover, sunchokes, and different grasses. Many of the herbs and berries harvested for health benefits in the forests and fields are considered “weeds.”

Another very practical approach to gardening for your health means planting things that you enjoy eating, perhaps things that you don’t always find fresh in the grocery store. There’s no reason to become completely reliant upon your garden, although it is nice to peruse the garden for dinner rather than take a trip to the grocery store. However, the more vegetables and fruits you plant, the more you will find yourself branching out and enjoying things that you didn’t know you liked. This often has to do with the very real taste difference between fresh garden produce and grocery store finds: Fresh is just better.

A vegetable garden is accessible, and it opens up doors to produce and delicious foods that we might have not previously had. This encourages us to make healthier choices. An example would be the tomato. It’s relatively easy to grow (make sure you plant the roots deep), and its fruit is extremely abundant. When harvest time comes, you will have basket after basket of tomatoes that are good enough to eat plain, no adornment necessary. The excess can be turned into sauce or salsa to be enjoyed all year. Another example is the sugar snap pea, which during the spring months is so abundant that you could gather a basket daily from five plants. It’s also delicious without any adornment or seasoning and full of protein, making them a favorite for children on the go. Abundance will spawn creativity, and before you know it your plate is full of nutrient-dense goodies. The more you have, the more you consume. When talking about produce, this is a great thing!

Aside from gardening sustainably, and gardening for food, the garden can also be a place of mental health. Many of the benefits that you go out of your way to enjoy, and actively spend money on, can be achieved simply through the garden. The garden can be a place of privacy and rest, much like a mini retreat. For this reason, you might want to plant according to

season, with something to enjoy in spring, summer, fall and winter. For example, tulips and crocus will pop up every year during spring, roses in summer and fall, and witch hazel in winter.

It’s not important that the garden always be “practical” to be a place of health. Growing a sense of well-being and safety is not to be scoffed at, as the state of our mind contributes considerably to our physical health. You might be inclined to plant roses for their scent, mint because of its relaxing smell in the bath, lavender because you like to cut the flowers for the dinner table, or dahlias for their burst of color. There are flowers that attract butterflies or hummingbirds, and plants that simply provide greenery. There are a variety of trees that do nothing for your plate but everything for lazy summer days in your hammock. Whatever the reason, investing in a garden is investing in your home and your health. And that is an investment worth making.

Don’t let fear drive investment deci sions

3.00

In the past year, we’ve seen some big swings in the financial markets. This volatility may make you feel as if you have little control over your investment success. But the truth is, you do have more control than you might think—as long as you don’t let fear guide your decisions.

Investment-related fear can manifest itself in a few different ways:

* Annual Percentage Yield (APY) effective 12/18/18. CDs offered by Edward Jones are bank-issued and FDIC-insured up to $250,000 (principal and interest accrued but not yet paid) per depositor, per insured depository institution, for each account ownership category. Please visit www.fdic.gov or contact your financial advisor for additional information. Subject to availability and price change. CD values are subject to interest rate risk such that when interest rates rise, the prices of CDs can decrease. If CDs are sold prior to maturity, the investor can lose principal value. FDIC insurance does not cover losses in market value. Early withdrawal may not be permitted. Yields quoted are net of all commissions. CDs require the distribution of interest and do not allow interest to compound. CDs offered through Edward Jones are issued by banks and thrifts nationwide. All CDs sold by Edward Jones are registered with the Depository Trust Corp. (DTC).

• Fear of loss - Some investors may emphasize avoiding losses more than achieving gains. Consequently, they might build portfolios they consider very low in risk, possibly containing a high percentage of certificates of deposit (CDs) and U.S. Treasury securities. Yet, a highly conservative approach carries its own risk—the risk of not achieving enough growth to stay ahead of inflation, much less meet longterm goals such as a comfortable retirement. To reach these goals, you’ll want to construct a diversified portfolio containing different types of assets and investments—each of which may perform differently at different times. Your objective shouldn’t be to avoid all risk—which is impossible—but to create an investment strategy that accommodates your personal risk tolerance and time horizon.

• Fear of missing out - You’re probably familiar with the term “herd mentality”—the idea that people will follow the lead of others for fear of missing out on something. This behavior is responsible for fads or the sudden emergence of “hot” products, and it’s also relevant to investing. In fact, herd mentality may contribute to sharp jumps in the financial markets as investors drive up prices by buying stocks to avoid being left behind. And the same may be true in reverse—when the market starts dropping, skittish investors may accelerate the decline by selling stocks so they,

too, can get out before it’s too late. Buying or selling investments should be considered as needed to help advance your long-term financial strategy—not in response to what others are doing.

• Fear of the unknown - Some investors fall victim to “familiarity bias”—the tendency to invest only in what they know, such as local or domestic companies. But this behavior can lead to under-diversified portfolios. If your portfolio is dominated by just a few investments, and these investments are fairly similar to each other, you could experience some losses when the inevitable market downturn occurs. To help reduce the impact of market volatility, it’s a good idea to spread your investment dollars across large and small companies in a range of industries and geographical regions. And that’s just on the equities side—it’s also wise to consider further diversifying your portfolio by owning bonds and government securities. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.)

• Fear of admitting failure - Some individuals don’t like to admit when they’ve been wrong about something, and they may continue the same failed activities, hoping for eventual success. This behavior can be costly in the investment arena. Sometimes, a particular investment, or even an investment strategy, just doesn’t work out, but an investor is determined to stick with it—even if it ultimately means considerable financial loss. Don’t let this happen to you—if it becomes apparent you need to change your investment approach, move on to something better.

Fear can hold us back in many walks of life—but don’t let it keep you from making appropriate investment moves.

March is National Nutrition Month

Advice from an expert on creating healthier habits for you and your family

As I’m writing this intro, it is nearing the end of January, and I’m curious how everyone’s New Year resolutions are holding up. We discussed starting the new year on the right health track in the last issue. How is it going? Are your new healthy habits sticking? If not, don’t be discouraged. Healthy, long-term habits take time, energy, repetition and commitment. For clarity, I asked my go-to professional, Sandra Frank (our Registered Clinical Dietitian and Diabetes Education Coordinator at Bonner General Health), for advice on nutrition and forming healthy habits.

As a professional, how do you define “nutrition”?

Nutrition is eating mindfully to nourish our bodies by enjoying whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein (beans, fish, poultry, eggs, lean meats, nuts), low-fat dairy or calcium source, and water to meet our nutrient needs.

How does nutrition affect long-term health?

Our eating impacts our health and weight. Dietary factors influence chronic disease risk, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Digestive, immune and brain health are also affected by our nutrition. Aging well through healthy eating at every age is what I am passionate about.

What would be your first piece of advice to someone who wants to make healthy choices but is still trying to figure out where to start?

Consistent meals. Use the plate method for meal planning. Include a variety of foods in moderation. Drink water and avoid sugarsweetened beverages.

What are the best ways to help a family change their diet?

• Regular family meals with the parents role modeling healthy eating. Also, trying new foods is the best way to help a family change their eating.

• Include the family in selecting new foods and recipes. Ageappropriate tasks for kids, such as mixing a salad, making funny faces with vegetables, and growing vegetables, encourage children to be interested and willing to try a new vegetable or food.

• Small changes over time, such as one new recipe per month, helps one not feel overwhelmed and be successful.

• Try fresh foods prepared in different ways, such as raw carrots, roasted carrots, “carrot fries,” carrots in soup and salad. It takes multiple exposures to new foods before children accept them. Adults also need to try and retry foods that they disliked as a child with a positive, curious attitude!

What significance does hydration play in nutrition?

Hydration is imperative to our overall health and to performing physical activity. Water is needed to lubricate and cushion joints, prevent constipation, remove wastes through urination, maintain an average body temperature, protect our spinal cord, and avoid dehydration. Fluid intake includes water, other beverages, and water from foods.

What is your go-to healthy snack?

Fruit; fresh fruit in season or frozen berries with plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or a few nuts.

Sandra assesses an inpatient’s nutritional needs after illness, surgery or diagnosis. She also counsels adult and pediatric outpatients on Medical Nutrition Therapy covering diabetes, weight management, oncology, cardiometabolic and renal conditions, and GI health. SKIN CARE IN PREGNANCY

What to avoid

Expecting mothers must be mindful of what they are putting in their bodies, including everything from the foods they eat to the medications they take, but it is also important to monitor what is applied externally to the body, and that includes skin care. Many ingredients that are safe outside of pregnancy should be avoided during pregnancy because the effects on the fetus are either unknown or could be harmful. Below we break down what skin-care ingredients to avoid until delivery and nursing are complete.

Retin-A, Retinyl Palmitate and Retinol

These vitamin A-derived products, available over the counter and by prescription, are used to treat a variety of skin concerns, including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, and pigmentation. However, they have been linked to birth defects and must be avoided while pregnant and nursing.

Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid Combo

Both of these ingredients are found in a wide array of over-the-counter acne cleansers and creams, and many products contain a combination of the two. While pregnant, it is best to select a product that has only one of the active ingredients, rather than a combination, to address any acne concerns. Additionally,

look for products containing less than 2 percent of salicylic acid.

Hydroquinone

A common side effect of pregnancy is melasma, often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy,” which causes a brown pigment to form on different areas of the body including the face. Hydroquinone is a skin lightener, so it may be tempting to address the pigmentation when it first appears, but large amounts of this chemical is absorbed into the body, making it more likely to enter the bloodstream and affect your baby. It is best to wait until after delivery and nursing to treat melasma, and many women find that the melasma improves without treatment in the postpartum period.

Chemical Sunscreen

The active ingredients Oxybenzone and Avobenzone, frequently found in chemical sunscreens, are hormone disruptors and can affect fetal development. It is best to stick with physical and mineral sunscreens that use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to protect your skin during pregnancy.

Please note that this is not an inclusive list, and it is recommended that you discuss the safety of the products you are using with your medical provider.

LOOK A POLISHED

What’s trendin g in nail art and which type of manicure is right f or you

As the days get longer and the sun pushes away the winter darkness, the world wakes up and brings out the colors of spring. This weather and nature shift is a sign that it’s time to refresh and retire our dark, moody manicures until next year.

Manicured nails are a great way to achieve a polished look while keeping your nails healthy and showing off your personality and style. Manicures let you experiment with colors and trends without the long-term commitment (like cutting bangs) or high price ($300 balayage, anyone?). But, with nail art trends going viral, and so many types of manicures, it can be overwhelming to keep up on what’s new and which option is right for you.

There are a few factors to consider when choosing your best manicure option. Think about your lifestyle, budget, current trends, upkeep, and how long you want the manicure to last. So, whether you like short minimalist nails or embellished gelnail extensions, we’re breaking down manicure basics and trends for the season.

72

Mani cure Types

The classic manicure shapes and uses traditional polish on natural nails. A gel manicure is the same process as the classic manicure, but a gel polish is used and cured under a UV light. For an acrylic manicure, a combination of liquid monomer and powder polymer is layered over the nail, then polished. For a dip powder manicure, a base coat is applied, and the nail is dipped into a pigmented powder and sealed with a top coat.

2ti me

Many factors contribute to the appointment duration and how long your manicure lasts, but here are some averages. The classic manicure takes about 30 minutes and lasts around seven days. A gel manicure takes about 30 minutes and lasts two to three weeks. Acrylic manicures take 45 minutes and last two to three weeks. Dip powder manicures take one hour and last up to four weeks. The time it takes for your manicure depends on the style, design, and nail technician. If you’re short on time, ask your nail technician for a time-estimate before getting started.

Sh apes

Long nails make a bold statement, but the short nail trend is growing—and people are opting for combination shapes that work for short to medium-length nails. Square and oval nails are considered classic shapes, but the “squoval” is taking over for the in-between look it offers. For people who want more space for design or embellishments but don’t want the full-stiletto point, almond-shaped nails are the go-to. Coffinshaped nails are another combo option on the rise, allowing for ample design space while merging the slant of the stiletto nail with the square tip.

col ors

The natural length and shape transfers over to colors with neutral and earth tones becoming more prominent. Although bare nails with a clear coat or glazed, pearly sheen embody the natural vibe, the color doesn’t have to be a light shade. From a “vanilla latte” color to burnt neutrals and grounding earth and gem tones, the colors can be vibrant and bold. With the 2023 Pantone color of the year announced as Viva Magenta, brighter colors found in nature add a little pizzazz.

Style Trends

Try different styles to shake up your manicure. Milky colors allow a slight shadow of your natural nail to be seen through the polish. Adding an accent nail of a different color or sheen adds fun detail. Top an opaque color with a subtle chrome layer to make your nails glossy and slightly iridescent. Try a French manicure with a twist—a barely there French with very thin, fine white or colored tips. Rather than an abrupt color transition on your French manicure, blend the colors gradually to create an ombre look. Reverse either style to mix it up even more.

Acce nts and Embellishments6

From rhinestones and nail piercings to experimenting with matte and gloss topcoats, adding accents and embellishments maintains popularity. Whether you want hand-drawn designs, patterns that depict your favorite fabric, stickers, nail jewels, or something new, 3-D nail art provides a lot of flexibility. Nails are truly customizable, and whether you go for minimalistic basics or bright, bold patterns, your nail art can be as subtle or as attention-grabbing as you want.

A Love for Food and Hospitality

Local couple brings their flair for cuisine and craft cocktails lakeside

An unmatched dining experience awaits diners on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille in Hope. Opened in April 2022 by Josh and Maddie Dorrell, Drift Lakeside Kitchen and Bar has quickly made a name for itself with its impressive menu paired with fine craft cocktails—and of course, the stunning view.

The road to Drift Lakeside began many years ago. Josh’s love of cooking began at a young age, as he recalls time spent in the kitchen with both his maternal and paternal grandmothers. After high school, he enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary ArtsScottsdale, where he graduated in 2007. For Maddie, she went through the hospitality program at California State University, San Bernardino - Palm Desert Campus, graduating in 2012. The two would meet in Palm Springs and work alongside each other in the hospitality scene at high-end hotels for nearly a decade. Josh and Maddie made the perfect pairing, not only professionally but personally. During this time, their relationship blossomed, and the two were married in June 2018.

The pair would spend time in Texas, then Montana—at Lake Koocanusa—where they fell in love with the North! After the struggles of COVID, not being able to make the living in California they had been accustomed to, the couple moved to Clark Fork and would open Drift Lakeside Kitchen and Bar in nearby Hope.

“My friend Ian has been out here for four years and is the one who found the restaurant location on his way home one day,” recalls Josh. “He called to tell me about it, and here we are.”

Combine Maddie’s love of craft cocktails and Josh’s love of food, and you have Drift Lakeside. The restaurant is described as new American casual fine dining. Josh, Maddie, and the rest of their team, pride themselves on being a from-scratch kitchen in which they are reinvigorating farm to table, with a dynamic menu that changes with what’s the best in season. Each menu item is uniquely crafted using seasonal, local produce, consciously sourced and foraged, and only the finest ingredients.

Stop in for dinner Thursday through Sunday to enjoy entrees like the Herb-Roasted Half Chicken, Pan-Seared Rockfish, Rigatoni Bolognese or Meatloaf. The brunch menu, served 10am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday, is sure to get you jumping out of bed, with items like the Salmon Eggs Benny, Wild Mushroom Omelet and Gluten-Free Pancakes Bananas Fosters. Try the Oysters, with vodka cocktail sauce, horseradish and lemon, or the Traditional Shrimp Cocktail. Guests are sure to satisfy their appetite with the Tri Tip Sandwich or Drift Burger. Happy hour is offered 4 to 5pm Thursday through Saturday, 4 to 6pm Sunday, with a selection of beverages, and shareables like the Wild Game Charcuterie, Truffle Garlic Parm Fries, and Pork and Green Chili Nachos.

Each week, they offer Ladies Night Thursday (with special deals on wine and appetizers), Prime Rib Friday and Pasta Night Saturday, as well as weekly specials that are sure to delight your palate. And keep your eyes out for the occasional winemaker’s dinner—sure to impress.

To complement the beautiful menu options, choose to pair your meal with a glass of wine, cold brew, or specialty cocktail from their full bar. They also offer a wonderful choice of non-alcoholic beverages to choose from, such as lemonade (huckleberry, strawberry, raspberry or blood orange), and lavender mojito.

As the warmer weather makes its way, diners have the option to dine outdoors, lakefront on the expansive patio.

Since opening their doors to the North Idaho community, Josh and Maddie couldn’t be more appreciative of the outpouring of support and encouragement. “The community has been nothing but patient and grateful, which really helps to keep us motivated to do what we love,” affirms Josh.

The Dorrells will celebrate a year in business the end of April, and they agree that they owe the success they’ve experienced to the incredible support of the local, their outstanding staff, and unwavering commitment to stand behind their food and drink, but acknowledge that without their business partners, Jason and Erin Holland, they would not be here.

Open 4 to 8pm Thursday and Friday, 10am to 8pm Saturday and 10am to 6pm Sunday, be sure to follow Drift Lakeside on Facebook and Instagram for current menus and specials.

EASTER TRADITIONS

DISCOVER THE MEANING OF EASTER AND SOME OF ITS TRADITIONS

COURTESY ARTICLE 94

As the arrival of Easter Sunday approaches on April 9 this year, people all over the world are gearing up for one of the most exciting celebrations of the year! This Christian holiday is observed in almost 95 countries, with around 80 percent of the population participating in the festivities.

Get ready for a feast for the senses as Easter Sunday comes alive with vibrant colors, mouthwatering foods, and joyful traditions! From the lively Easter egg hunts to the joyous visits with the Easter Bunny, this holiday is full of delightful surprises and heartwarming moments.

For centuries, Easter Sunday has been celebrated as a tribute to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And as time has passed, numerous traditions have emerged to mark this event, each with its own unique flare. Whether you’re gathering with family or friends, there’s no doubt that the spirit of Easter will fill the air, bringing people together with love, hope, and joy.

So, mark your calendars and join in the fun as we honor this sacred holiday in our own special way. Let’s make this year’s Easter Sunday a day to remember!

Sunrise Easter Service

One long-standing tradition is the sunrise Easter service, which dates back to 1732 when the Moravian Church held the first service at dawn in Germany. This practice honors the moment when Mary discovered Jesus’ tomb was empty early in the morning.

Ham/Lamb

Although the choice of what to serve for Easter dinner might come down to taste preference, the menu holds great significance for some. In early Jewish history, lambs were sacrificed as offerings to God and served regularly as part of the Passover feast. Then, when Jesus died during Passover, he represented the ultimate sacrifice for sin, the “lamb of God,” so the animal evolved into a meaningful symbol for Christians. Many Orthodox Christians still follow the Jewish Orthodox customs of not eating any pork, so lamb takes center stage at their Easter meal.

The Easter Bunny and Easter Baskets

The Easter Bunny and Easter baskets are also popular Easter traditions that have evolved over time. The Easter Bunny is believed to have originated from ancient spring and fertility celebrations, while Easter baskets may have originated with Middle Eastern farmers bringing baskets of seedlings to be blessed for a successful harvest.

Hot Cross Buns

These festive rolls have their origins in ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, where they were considered symbols of honor for their goddesses. Eventually, they gained popularity during Easter in England, where bakers were restricted from selling spiced breads except on special occasions such as the Friday before Easter.

Hot cross buns, baked on Good Friday, were believed by many English people to never grow moldy and were therefore kept as good luck charms. They accompanied sailors on voyages and were buried in piles of grain to prevent rodents. Today, these buns mainly serve as a representation of the Christian symbol of the cross.

Egg Tapping Game

The Easter tradition of egg tapping, also known as egg fighting, egg knocking, egg pacqueing, egg boxing, egg picking or egg jarping, involves two people tapping the pointed ends of eggs together until one cracks, with the winner being the person who cracks the most eggs. This game originated in Medieval Poland and is still played in many parts of the world today. In Louisiana, the town of Marksville holds an annual official egg-tapping competition with stringent rules and regulations, and winners must demonstrate that their eggs are real by cracking and eating them at the end of the event.

Whether you choose to commemorate the holiday with traditions that are centuries-old or create your own new traditions, there are many ways to make this Easter Sunday a memorable one.

Hop on Over to Lakeview Park!

An Easter egg-stravaganza happening April 8

The Sandpoint Lions Club has been hosting events locally since 1953–with 2023 marking 70 years of wonderful community events.

A&H HIGHLIGHT

One tradition that continues, the Saturday prior to Easter, is the Sandpoint Lions Club’s annual Easter Egg Hunt! Each year, approximately 20 volunteers come together to continue this fun-filled morning filled with laughter and smiles; the perfect way to kick off those Easter festivities and celebrations a day early. This year’s Easter Egg Hunt takes place Saturday, April 8, with the egg hunt starting promptly at 10am at the Lakeview Park (921 Ontario Street) in Sandpoint.

“This is such a fun event for the kids,” shares Janice Rader, Lions Club president. “It’s events like this that bring our community together.”

The annual hunt will happen rain, shine or snow! Be sure to dress for the weather and be ready for an exciting, fast-paced morning. Each year, around 2,000 children and family members show up to the hunt to search for the hundreds of candy-filled plastic eggs. Hunts are broken down by age: 1 and younger (no candy for this group, rather little stuffed animals and bath toys); 2 and 3; 4 and 5; 6 and 7; 8 and 9; 10 and 11. All hunts kick off

at exactly 10am, so come early! As Janice shares, the hunting is usually over in less than 10 minutes!

For the past two years, there have been special golden eggs hidden, and those lucky kiddos who discovered one of those golden eggs received a free bicycle, courtesy of the Lions Club. This year, there won’t be special golden eggs, but kids will still have the chance to win one of approximately 10 bicycles (including two ride-on toys for the babies)! Be sure to check all of your plastic eggs before you leave the hunt to see if you’re a winner.

There will be coffee available, courtesy of Starbucks Ponderay, at the Lions Club parking lot, as well as hot cocoa for the kids thanks to the Lions Club. And for the first time this year, according to Janice, there are plans to have Girl Scout cookies for sale at this event.

Keep an eye out as additional details are announced online at Facebook.com/SandpointLionsClub.

Spring has sprung and Easter has arrived. Don’t forget to hop on over to Lakeview Park on April 8 to enjoy a morning of family fun and community.

The best part is that 100 percent of the proceeds will go directly to the Panhandle Alliance for Education. Your ticket grants you access to the demo area, where you can shop around, talk to reps and pick out the ski or board that you would like to try. Tickets are priced $60 to $135 and can be purchased on EventBrite.com. The event takes place from 7:30am to 2:30pm. The silent auction ends, and raffles drawn, at 3pm at the demo area.

The Giant Slalom course begins at the Sky House lodge at the summit of Schweitzer and finishes at the Outback lodge at the base of the mountain, 2,400 vertical feet and nearly 2 ½ miles of skiing. The day also includes a barbecue lunch at the Mountain View patio at 10:30am, followed by awards, and at the end of the day, enjoy an Après Ski Party in Taps. Additional details can be found at 24HoursforHank.org.
