OVER THE COURSE of the last few weeks, the world has watched in horror as Malaysian Airlines flight 370 vanished from the face of the earth. News broadcasters count down the days until the ping from the black box, which is actually orange in color, will no longer be audible. Satellite images provide clues but no answers. While theories such as terrorism or engine malfunction abound, the tragic reality is that 239 people have vanished from the face of the earth; almost like a bad science fiction movie. How is it in this era of technology that we can lose a plane? After all, it was over 40 years ago when families gathered around the television to watch in awe as an astronaut made history walking on the moon. Now, nearly a half-century later, we are not able to locate a missing plane. We’ve all heard the saying ‘it’s a small world,’ but this latest occurrence is a testament to just how vast the world is; the depths of the oceans incomprehensible. While this is baffling for many, it is heart wrenching for those whose loved ones were on that flight. What can possibly provide closure when they have no idea of the fate of those aboard?

This tragedy was closely followed by another disaster closer to home. The horrific landslide in Snohomish County left many feeling unsafe in their own homes. Lives were lost and families are waiting for word of their loved ones who are still missing. I urge you to stop and take a moment from your day. IT’S HAPPENED AGAIN! In March the Word Property Channel named the Top 10 Mountain Towns in America. And yes, Sandpoint made the list ranked as number four. The criteria, other than the obvious of being a mountain town, were the friendliness of the people, recreational opportunities and a true authentic “country” atmosphere. Describing Sandpoint, the World Property Channel spoke of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille and the opportunities it provides for not only fishing, kayaking and boating but also the ability to do all this in a place where one can be so close to nature – specifically mentioning the beauty of the bald eagles that circle above as one recreates on the lake. With all the stories written on Sandpoint in the last decade, one wonders just how these national and international publications go about gathering information to determine what those in North Idaho already know – Sandpoint is a treasure.

Festival at Sandpoint’s Annual Wine Tasting, Dinner & Auction With spring peaking its head around the corner, all thoughts turn to beautiful warm sunny days in Sandpoint. With that comes the anticipation of one of our town’s biggest events, the Festival at Sandpoint. With the announcement of the lineup coming in May, organizers are busy planning for the event. “Most often times when there is a story about Sandpoint, we field a call early on to answer questions, direct them to the right contact and resources and supply them with pictures if they need them,” said Mack Deibel, Communications Manager for the Chamber of Commerce. According to Deibel, there is a wide range of questions that come with the various media inquires, all dependent upon what publication they write for retirement, travel, ski, and more. “Our main focus is to find out what sort of experience they want to have,” said Deibel. “Everyone is different and that is exactly why our play on words slogan is ‘What a beautiful pace’ because everyone’s pace is different. Sandpoint is an experience and it is a multi-facet experience. We customize every experience for every writer and visitor that comes to the visitor center.” Steve Winston, the writer of the most recent article by the World Property Channel, first came to Sandpoint in 2011 as part of a familiarization tour sponsored by the State of Idaho.

On Friday, April 25th, the Festival at Sandpoint invites the community to attend its Annual Wine Tasting, Dinner and Auction at Bonner County Fairgrounds “Wine Garden.” With a purchase price of only $50 plus tax, attendees are treated to a Riedel wine glass, wine tasting, silent and live auction items, a gourmet dinner and entertainment! The event will feature over 100 wines and promises to be a great kickoff to the Festival season. “We hosted Steve for a couple of nights: provided an itinerary, made his arrangements, met him for lunch and dinner to provide more hands on experiences and answered his questions. We’ve remained in contact since,” said Deibel, adding that various entities contributed to the lodging and dining expenses. The increase in media exposure has provided great publicity nationally and internationally for this small community. “It adds to economic vitality. IT’S SPRINGTIME. Many are anxious to put away the boots, but there are others who, instead of sporting fashionable footwear, slip on a pair of tennis shoes to cover up their yellow, brittle toenails. It’s a battle many have struggled with for years. Onychomycosis, a fungal infection that is evidenced by nails that are thickened, brittle, crumbled, distorted in shape, or dull, has long been a challenge for doctors to cure. But now there is treatment available locally that has proven to be far more effective than the creams, ointments or oral medication many have tried unsuccessfully. Dr. Jon Fisher, a podiatric surgeon at North Idaho Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Ponderay, began researching treatment options for fungal infections about six years ago. As a surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle surgery, he had witnessed several of his patients struggle with various treatment options, none of which showed long lasting effects. Fisher was familiar with the PinPointe Laser to treat onychomycosis and, although it was FDA approved, Fisher wanted to perform his own research before introducing it into his practice. “I contacted at least a dozen doctors and clinics and took the information I learned from all of them and came up with my own plan for treating my patients,” said Fisher, who has seen an 80 to 90% success rate. According to Fisher, the fungi live in a layer of dead skin around the nail, under the nail and in the nail, therefore it is important to treat all components of the problem for maximum results. “Anything in the medical field should be treated as a systems approach. You have to treat the skin, the nails and the environment,” said Dr. Fisher. Issues in the environment he addresses with his patients include shoes, socks, sheets, shower, and more. “Participation by the patient is very important.”

Dr. Fisher provides a free initial consultation followed by one treatment during which the laser light passes through the nail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The results are seen over a 9 to 12 month period as the nails grow out. “The laser is a high dose of UV light. It does not burn you or cause any adverse reactions,” said Dr. Fisher. He sees his patients again at the 4 month mark for a follow up treatment and at 9 to 12 months to monitor progress. While the procedure is not covered by insurance, patients can use their Health Savings Account, Medical IRA or a Flex Spending Account to pay for the procedure. Dr. Fisher and his wife Katie moved to Sandpoint from Seattle where Fisher was a resident at Harborview Medical Center. Both originally from the Midwest, he from Minnesota and she from North Dakota, the couple was drawn to Sandpoint by the many outdoor opportunities it has to offer. Valencia Wetlands Trust Pioneers in wetland management. By Joshua Nishimoto. IN THE WAKE OF FAILED wetland conservation by both public and private parties, the Federal Government directed company, Valencia Wetland Trust, stands alone and on top! Their greatest achievement being the nearly finished construction of the Old Louisiana Pacific Sawmill site and their ongoing conservation of said site. They service areas in all seven major counties of the panhandle, and their biggest consumers are Federal Highway Administration, Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), E.P.A., private developers and other government agencies. In 2008, the Federal Government codified wetland banking as the top preference for replacing destroyed wetlands in order to abolish the difficulties found in private and public land management. The overall point being that companies were spending too much time, money and energy on improperly managed wetland sites. Valencia Wetland Trust has streamlined efficiency to work with engineers, consumers and federal and state governments. In both public and private land development, Valencia Wetland Trust takes on legal liability for necessary impacts to wetlands and, while partnering with other foundations such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Valencia Wetland Trust protects both the property and perpetuity of the preserved wetland. Donna Collier, Manager at Valencia Wetland Trust, states that “the most inspiring aspect of Valencia Wetland Trust is that it’s a government-sponsored program that actually works!” Collier goes on to say that although she is happy with the progress they’ve made, the highlight of her job has been to witness the return of wildlife to the site. She explains, “There are even two at-risk species that have started nesting on the wetlands site— the Hooded Merganser and the Wilson’s Phalarope.” Now that
the site has been restored, these species will have the opportunity to not only survive, but to thrive. Collier explains that the Great Blue Heron had ten recorded nests last year and that two years ago the first Bald Eagle nest had made its appearance. Collier loves watching the Osprey and the Bald Eagles compete for fish, a sight that will continue to be witnessed as Valencia Wetland Trust continues their work; work that Collier hopes they will finish within the next two years. According to Collier, this work will require “Tweaking of the major construction site, the fine tuning of excavation from last year and the expansion of the wetlands.” After the completion of this work, Valencia will continue the conservation of this site. They are currently working on increasing educational opportunities for children and adults. Mark your calendars for April 24th. By Patty Hutchens. YOU’VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT IT and now it is your chance to see it. Kinderhaven, this area’s only privately funded group home and emergency shelter for abused and neglected children, is hosting its annual open house in Sandpoint on April 24th from 11am to 1pm. April is child abuse prevention month, and each year Kinderhaven opens its doors to the public to give a glimpse into the home in which over 1500 children have found shelter, safety and love over the last 18 years. And it truly is just that – a home. A kitchen where the Kinderhaven “family” gathers to prepare and share meals; a bedroom each child can personalize and call his or her own. Sadly, for some it marks the first time they have ever slept in a bed. The backyard and the family room are places the kids and staff gather to play, laugh and rejoice in being a child. Finally free from fear, the children are given structure, boundaries, and a lot of love.
Community volunteers come in after school to assist with homework. Others come in and read to the younger children. Some have offered cooking classes and basic life skills to the teens. Take time on April 24th to come by and see the great things the Kinderhaven staff and community supporters have done to help abused and neglected children in North Idaho. You are sure to be impressed. And remember, reporting suspected child abuse can be the first step to saving a child’s life. Be aware there are several types of abuse including physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment. Typically they are found in combination with one another as opposed to alone. I am inspired by many of the life stories I hear, and the joys we celebrate with people when they get a job, increase their hours, or find the courage to take a new position. On March 6, Goodwill Industries celebrated our annual Awards and Recognition Night. Four hundred employees, participants, board members, community partners, and friends and family gathered to celebrate the successes of 2013. In the last two and a half years, Center Partners has employed more than 100 people from Goodwill’s Working Solutions program, many of whom have overcome challenging circumstances. From honey flax bread to cinnamon rolls and cookies, and even frozen ravioli, there is something for everyone, and it’s all made fresh daily.
Due to celiac disease, Aaron follows a strict gluten-free diet. But the couple quickly learned that just because an item may be labeled as such does not mean that gluten is totally absent. “We kept buying things labeled glutenfree, but Aaron would still get sick,” said Cori. They did their homework and discovered that to be labeled gluten-free, a product must have 25 parts or less per
Instead, Cori began to make everything herself. From condiments to bread it was all gluten-free. Over the course of 12 years she has developed recipes that are flavorful and nutritious. “I enjoy taking dishes and adopting them to a gluten-free recipe,” said Cori.
Both Cori and Aaron believe it is important to source as much of their food as possible locally. “We are as health and environmentally conscious as possible,” she said. “To have control over what you eat is to know where your food comes from, and the only way to do that is to know your farmer.” Hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. On Saturdays look for Bread of Life at the Farmers’ Market beginning in May.

Easter
A celebration with diverse traditions worldwide, but united in meaning. By Patty Hutchens.
IT’S CRAMMED WITH TOURISTS, vendors, and shops. It feels very commercial, even during the holiest time of the year; yet for Christians it is the most sacred place on earth. When I visited Jerusalem in 1983, I was in awe of many things, but in particular walking those steps Jesus walked during his final moments. The Stations of the Cross are now shops and privately owned buildings, with the final stations, heavily adorned with ornamentation, being located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It was Christmas Eve day in 1983 when a local man took my friends and I on a short walk by some of these stations along Via Dolorosa. The man stopped at the fourth station, only recognizable by the roman numeral IV on the building. Here he said, “I don’t know if it’s the actual spot or not, but I do know that 25 years ago I used to buy hummels here.” It was certainly not what I expected, but had it not been for this self appointed tour guide, I may have missed it all together. Walking those same steps along Via Dolorosa as Jesus did was truly a moving, humbling experience that I will never forget. Some skeptics wonder if certain events happened in the exact spot the tourist guides showed to us. To me, it did not matter. I was in Jerusalem. The celebration of Easter, which this year falls on April 20th, is the most sacred day among Christians worldwide. It is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus following his crucifixtion. But just how it is celebrated is different throughout the world. In the United States we have Easter bunnies and colored eggs. While these instantly conjure up the image of an Easter celebration, if one really stops to think about it, what could they possibly have to do with the most sacred day in Christian religion?

While nothing is known for certain, there are theories that abound; the most popular of which stems from the fact that in ancient times an egg symbolized new life. In fact, eggs used to play a large role in pagan celebrations marking the beginning of spring – a time of hope. But for Christians it means more than new life. It is a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus. So why do we decorate the eggs? This tradition goes back 800 years and originated because eggs were a food Christians were forbidden to eat during the Lenten season. At the end of the Lenten season, it is said that people would then decorate and eat them to mark the end of their penance and fasting. The tradition of the Easter bunny is one that originated with German immigrants who came to this country in the 1700s and stems from the fact that the bunny was an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. While foreigners may think our traditions are odd, there are several other countries around the world whose traditions are equally unique and, without explanation, may not appear to be sacred at all. But a look into their meanings can help to understand some of their celebrations. In Poland, one needs to make sure they are wearing his or her rain gear on Easter Monday. The tradition, referred to as Smingus-Dyngus, has young boys gathering buckets of water, hoses and water guns to try to soak girls with water. It is said that girls who get drenched with water will be married in the upcoming year. The water is a symbol of baptism and the tradition is believed to have stemmed from the baptism of Polish Prince Mieszko which took place on Easter Monday in 966 AD. A Hungarian Easter tradition is a twist to that of Poland. There they perform what they refer to as ‘sprinkling’ on Easter Monday. Instead of water, boys will sprinkle perfume or scented water on a girl and ask for a kiss. The symbolism behind this ritual stems from the belief of water being not only cleansing, but also healing and was also believed to have induced fertility. For Norweigens interested in reading a good crime novel, Easter is a time they look forward to with anticipation. For nearly a century, publishers in Norway choose Easter time to relese crime novels. It is said to have started when a publisher promoted its crime novel on the front page of newspapers in Norway during the 1920s. While it was an ad, people were fooled into believing it was actual news. While not related in any way to the Easter celebration, it is one of the most publicized traditions in this Scandanavian country.
The Stations of the Cross are now shops and privately owned buildings, with the final stations, heavily adorned with ornamentation, being located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Traveling to Bermuda on Easter? You will be treated to colorful skies as people fly kites symbolizing Jesus’ ascent into heaven. In Rome, the Pope devotes Good Friday to observing the Way of the Cross, a solemn devotion which recalls with mindful affection the last stage of the journey that Jesus walked before he was crucified. This takes place at the Coliseum in the heart of Rome. Easter Sunday the Pope celebrates with the thousands who travel from around the world to congregate in St. Peter’s Square waiting for the Pope’s blessing from the balcony on this sacred day. While Easter traditions may differ throughout the world, one thing remains constant. Christians gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and the gift of eternal life.

AEROSPACE EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

WE DRIVE BY IT OFTEN, but how many of us are really aware of the great things taking place at the Sandpoint airport? The Sandpoint aviation community is close knit and the hearts of those in the industry are generous. Just ask the younger generation. Anna Filce, a senior at the Forrest Bird Charter School, has always been interested in aviation. Thanks to her, many her age now have the opportunity to enroll in a Cooperative Aerospace Program through area high schools. “Anna had a vision where kids could enroll in ground school and have flight experience,” said Ken Larson, a local pilot who has been instrumental in launching the program. The program offers courses in several aerospace related fields. “Being a pilot is just a small part of a career in aviation,” said Larson. The courses now available to high school students include: Survey of Aerospace Careers, Sport Pilot Knowledge Test Preparation and FAA Test, Sport Pilot Flight Training and FAA Practical Test – classroom and lab, Introduction to Aircraft Maintenance Technology – classroom and lab, Introduction and Internships – Engineering & Manufacturing Labs; and Individual Study Opportunities Last fall the 12 students enrolled in the survey course heard firsthand from industry experts. “We had a guest speaker every class,” said Larson. Among the presenters were three aeronautical engineers, a flight attendant, and a former NASA engineer, Roger King, who worked with the Apollo program. “He was the one who figured out

how to get Apollo 13 back.” Also speaking were astronaut John Phillips and a female stunt pilot. The goal is to provide students with enough exposure to see if a career in the aerospace industry is something that interests them. But they also have the opportunity to walk away with flying experience and a sport utility pilot license. Currently 10 students are in ground school preparing to take the written FAA test. “As soon as they pass the written they can start flying,” said Larson, who has noticed a boost in the students’ self-esteem and confidence level. Jason Hauck, a pilot and licensed A & P (airframe & power) mechanic, teaches the Introduction to Aircraft Maintenance Technology providing both hands-on and classroom experience. “The students have access to an actual jet engine to work on,” said Larson, referring to a donation from Sandpoint’s Timberline Helicopters. It is a field that many who are trained in are almost guaranteed a job. It is forecasted that over the course of the next 20 years there will be a need for 550,000 mechanics. There are many in the aviation community who are doing their part to support this high school program. Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Weekend Getaway. By Jessica Herbig.
“If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it.” - President Lyndon B. Johnson - Upon signing the Wilderness Act in 1964 THE WILDERNESS ACT OF 1964 PAVED THE WAY (or unpaved the way) for a swath of wilderness known as the Scotchman Peaks Wilderness. It meanders through 88,000 acres of peaks and valleys, the highest of which is Scotchman, the highest point in Bonner County, Idaho summiting at 7,009 ft. Collectively, the Scotchman Peaks run from Idaho into Montana and have arguably some of the best hiking around for all skill levels and abilities. You can access trailheads heading into the wilderness area from many points beginning in Sandpoint heading east on Hwy 200 to the Montana border and beyond. The hike up Scotchman Peak starts at Trail 65 outside Clark Fork, Idaho. Grab some sandwiches on homemade bread at the local Pantry in Clark Fork, fill up your water bottles, and head north on Main Street, turning into Mosquito Creek Rd #276. Turn right at the junction of Road #2294. You’ll go a little over a mile, looking for signs for Trail 65. Turn left on Road 2294A and turn left again. The road ends at the trailhead. There’s a small parking area, which also makes a great camping spot. The climb is short, but strenuous. Four miles one way with an elevation gain of approximately 3,700 ft. The amazing views start in the lower meadows and continue up to the summit. Don’t
forget your camera, but keep a good hold on it because there’s some mountain goats up there that might try to take it from you! If you go in mid-August, you might catch the huckleberries when they are ripe, but don’t tell anyone you heard it here. Huckleberry picking spots are a closely guarded secret in this area. If you are looking for a hike with a faster pace, or maybe want to try some offroad ATV/UTVing, try the Strong Creek Hike just outside the boundaries of the proposed Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Area. Featured in Backpacker Magazine and online at www. backpacker.com/destinations/hikes/912026, Strong Creek Hike #444 has an upper and lower trailhead, accessible off of Trestle Creek Road or out of Hope, Idaho. The trail has been cut wide for ATV and motorcycle

Both of the mentioned hikes, as well as most of the hikes in this area, cut through bear country. Make sure you’re carrying appropriate protection from wild animals while you are out hiking, and it is always recommended to hike with friends and let someone who is staying behind know your destination. If you plan on camping, leave that information with someone as well. It’s easy to get turned around even if you are familiar with the area. It’s all about having fun when you are out in the wilderness. This summer, consider getting out and enjoying the amazing natural wonders in beautiful North Idaho!

This column is dedicated to the Middle-Aged among us, lost in society’s Bermuda Triangle between being young and being “older”, acknowledged only by ads selling them cosmetics to make them look young again and comfort bras to ease the inevitable triumph of gravity. EVERYONE SHOVES OUR NOSE into why we should lose weight, like pushing a puppy’s nose into a pee puddle. It’s shaming. So let me launch this middle-agers weight loss column with three real life examples of one reason why you don’t need to lose weight. First, my friend introduced me to a couple sitting at a nearby table in a restaurant. The handsome young man and middle-aged woman were friends of hers from a singles group. I felt sorry for the woman because…well honestly, because she was dumpy and trying to cover it with a cardigan that only made it worse. My inner critic had the unkind thought that if this single woman wanted to be married, she
needed to lose weight. Then the couple shyly shared that they were on their honeymoon! Beads of sweat well on her forehead, and she is breathless from the effort. It turns out they are newlyweds, there to announce they are expecting a baby and won’t be attending the meeting for awhile. And lastly, you know how a lot of ladies seem to have a “thing” for

bass players? A pretty blonde woman who was about 80 pounds overweight played the keyboard in a church worship team. Skinny admirers thronged the shaggy-haired bass player every Sunday until one day he announced his engagement to the keyboard player, standing with his arm around her, both of them positively beaming with happiness. These examples all contradict the stereotypical thinking of this “post a photo” world, where it often becomes difficult to believe you don’t need to lose weight to be loved. But it’s true, nonetheless. I thought it was appropriate to begin this monthly column with this very important message.

Are you experiencing sciatica, knee pain, back pain, plantar fasciitis, or shin splints? Weekend warriors, star athletes, and couch potatoes all experience chronic or acute physical pain at some time. What causes the inception of pain? Where is its foundation? If you tried to build a house on an unbalanced foundation, the walls would not be stable. Depending upon the severity of the imbalance, you either could not build the walls at all, or eventually they would fall, bringing the roof down with it. This is what we do when we tell ourselves that all we need to do is exercise or lose weight and all our pain will go away. We try to “fix” ourselves by building on an unstable and unbalanced foundation - our body. The original imbalances can come from an injury, overuse, or misuse of our body. Our muscles and skeletal system are all connected, myofacial meridians running throughout organizing the structural forces required for motion. The compensation our body imposes to account for the imbalances affect the functioning of the entire system. A neuromuscular process known as reciprocal inhibition illustrates that when a muscle is activated, the opposing muscles are inhibited; they are turned off or shut down. For example, if the quad is tight, even though it might not feel bothersome to you, the hamstrings sense that muscle engagement and become slightly inhibited. We are asking the hamstring to do its normal functions, but as it is firing a bit later or not contracting to full capacity, it can become tight and strained.

Postural deficits such as forward lean and excessive lumbar curve put undue pressure on the low back and contribute to low back pain. Forward head positioning and tight muscles of the neck, shoulder, and upper back may be the source of recurrent headaches. These examples are but a few, making us aware of the fact that where we feel the pain may not necessarily be the reason for our discomfort. It is important to have a thorough assessment to evaluate imbalances in the body before taking on an exercise program. Tight muscles need to be identified and relaxed as well as weaker muscles strengthened. Don’t exacerbate the problems by trying the “quick fix”. Once you find balance in your body, your exercise and strength programs will help you maintain posture and stay pain free.

TREES ARE BUDDING, the earth is warming, and it is time to make a garden plan! What should gardeners accomplish this month? Your Northwest locale dictates specifics, but in a nutshell, April is time to decide what to grow, plan your garden space, and start seeds indoors. Geographically specific gardening resources are abundant, so guidance is close at hand! Mavis Butterfield, a gardening and home life blogger at OneHundredDollarsAMonth.com in Gig Harbor, WA, offers these suggestions for April: “I like to get a jump start on my cucumber and zucchini seeds by starting them indoors under grow lights. The trick is to not plant them too early - mid April works best for me - so they are ready to transplant to the garden in mid-May. I also like to start a few herbs indoors. Basil, Cilantro, and parsley come to mind. What am I direct sowing into the garden? Carrots, celery, kohlrabi, beets, chard, kale and asparagus roots.” Butterfield uses wood pallets for garden boxes. Look for heat-treated palettes, versus chemically treated wood. Clear the ground; lay landscape fabric below the pallet; fill with garden soil, pushing the soil in between the wood slats; and plant with lettuces, herbs, peppers, strawberries, or any number of above ground vegetables. Butterfield’s blog offers a pallet garden tutorial. The Bonner County Gardener’s Association presents events and education for gardeners in the eastern edge of the Northwest. Advice from experienced growers is to start small and investigate before planting. Know your climate and your soil. Invest in a gardening reference book specific to your climate. Experts recommend a laboratory soil test every three years, with home testing in between. United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Offices offer soil testing for a small fee.

SHS graduate returns to his alma mater as teacher and now head varsity baseball coach. By Patty Hutchens. ALTHOUGH HE SPENT his post high school years in Oregon, 2003 Sandpoint High School graduate Scott Fitchett kept tabs on his hometown – especially when it came to sports. And now that he has returned to Sandpoint, Fitchett will play an important role in the destiny of his alma mater’s baseball team as the head coach for SHS varsity baseball.
I started having visions of coming back to Sandpoint and turning the baseball program around.
As a three-sport athlete, football, baseball and basketball, Fitchett pitched and played first base for Corban University and coached at the lower level for six years in Astoria, OR. “I never was interested in making the step to head coach because I knew the time commitment,” said Fitchett. But that all changed last spring. “I started having visions of coming back to Sandpoint and turning the baseball program around.” He took a position with Sandpoint High School last fall and teaches government, sociology and US History and is an assistant coach for SHS junior varsity football. When the position of head baseball coach opened up, Fitchett’s vision turned to reality and his reluctance turned to enthusiasm. He was hired last October.
With 45 kids turning out, Fitchett was encouraged. “If we get those kinds of numbers next year, we’ll have to add a third team.” He said the biggest strength this year’s team has is drive. “The desire is there. The work ethic is there. There is a lot of talent; it just needs to be developed,” said Fitchett. “My job is to help them achieve the best they can be. It’s exciting because they are willing and athletic. They just need to learn and understand the game a bit better and put the mechanics to use.”

His biggest challenge as head coach? Changing the culture of the program. “We need to teach the kids that they can be successful,” he said. He has no doubt they will be and predicts by May they will be strong offensively. “I measure success on improvement and not necessarily the scoreboard. But at the same time we need to teach them that they can win.” Another of Fitchett’s goals is to create a cohesive culture of baseball in Sandpoint. To that end, he is involved with the program from little league all the way up through high school. “I’m working with people in the community who love baseball. We need to build these relationships and sustain them,” he said. Fitchett’s coaching staff includes Ricky Klonz Jr., Rick Klonz Sr., Adam Hodges, Shaun Warren, Hollis Stewart and Ken Oler. “I wanted to build a staff that had a broad range of success in the history of Sandpoint baseball,” said Fitchett, who adds he is also very appreciative for the help and support that has been offered by his predecessor Chris Young. Fitchett is married to his high school sweetheart, Sage, a photographer and owner of Sage Fitchett Photography. They have a one-year-old daughter, Nora. Scott said he is grateful to Sage for her support while he spends time on the field working with the young athletes and coaching the game he loves. As for summer baseball, don’t look for Fitchett on the field. He has spent the last six summers in Alaska as a bear guide, leading tours of photographers who wish to photograph the animals, and plans to return this summer.

BIRDS ARE THE ULTIMATE sensitive creature when it comes to the environment. Remember the old canary in the coalmine? Birds are so sensitive to dangerous gasses such as carbon monoxide that miners carried them down into the deep and watched them with anxious eyes. Whatever birds inhale or ingest quickly absorbs into their lungs and other organs. My research with the ASPCA uncovered some important precautions for bird owners.

Even smoke from burning fats can cause rapid death in pet birds. Other fumes, such as aerosol sprays, non-stick sprays, perfumes, oven cleaners, and cooking gas are equally dangerous. Just

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, signs of the toxicity in your dog can manifest in as little as 30 minutes. And for a 20 lb. dog, as few as two sticks of chewing gum can be fatal. What makes it so harmful? It is said that the ingestion of even a small amount of xylitol will cause a rapid release of insulin and result in hypoglycemia in pets. Signs to watch for include vomiting, weakness, uncoordinated movements, depression, decreased potassium, seizures and a coma. Keep your pets safe and be aware of what they can get into when you are not around!
