Practical Living

ESSENTIALS by Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Ponderay Design Center

AFRAID OF COMMITMENT? TEST OUT YOUR PRODUCTS AND COLOR CHOICES AT HOME BEFORE PURCHASING WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT to look at colors in your own space before making a commitment? It’s simple – the light in showrooms and stores is different than your light at home, therefore the colors and even the texture may look different. A common example of this is the importance of painting a test area on your wall before you give the go-ahead to paint your entire house a color that you swore was perfect on the sample. I don’t know how many times I hear that the paint looked less pink on the sample or someone wished they had gone with a bolder color, but they were scared because it looked so dark on the sample! Everyone should test it out in their home first. This can be said for most interior purchases. Everything from tile to carpet, trim to cabinets, and wall colors to window coverings. Don’t be afraid to ask to borrow samples. As a salesperson, I actually am nervous ordering for someone who comes in, picks out their special order item after only looking at it a few minutes, using the showroom lighting, and then just orders it. Will you change your mind once it’s in your home? Will you be stuck with a product

SandpointLivingLocal.com

21

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TRY SAMPLES

you don’t absolutely love? I encourage people to take samples and look at them in their own home. Then, when I come measure for whatever you’re ordering, we talk about the product specifics, color selection, and l leave the client’s house with us both feeling confident about their decision. I want you to love your purchase, brag about it to your friends, and then send them in to see me so I can help them too! Now, let’s talk about the advantage of using a showroom to make your selections. Once you’re in the showroom, we don’t just let you pick out a few samples and walk out the door. We talk to you about your options, explain each selection, and walk you through the pros and cons of each product, and then we narrow down your options together. We’ve seen the product installed, we know how it works and we share our professional advice and opinions. You do not get this kind of service on the Internet. You also don’t get this kind of service and experience from a store that experiences a

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

high rate of turnover. Most showrooms have experienced professionals that know what they are talking about. A professional showroom not only has color samples, they display each of these products so you can test them. Instead of scrolling through pictures, you can touch and feel the textures, (all of them!), you can operate and explore the mechanics of how it works, and most importantly, you can ask questions to a reallife person who understands the product and makes sure it’s right for you.

Take The STING Out Of Spring! Guaranteed Control • Senior Discounts

In some cases, this may also mean that you pay a little bit more for the product, but you aren’t just paying for the product. You’re providing yourself peace of mind with the money you’re spending because you now have a company that stands behind what they sell, and if there are issues, you have local service. However, with certain products, you may not be paying more at all when shopping local. Most local companies have vendors that they work closely with and, as such, they have preferred pricing from that vendor for their products. There are quite a few manufacturers that only sell through showrooms, and it’s because they demand their products have superior representation. They train the staff at these showrooms on their product and certify that the showrooms meet their criteria. When you purchase these products, you are guaranteed that product’s warranty and also have certified installation, service and repairs.

It pays to shop local. You get high quality products, professional installation, warranties and available repair services. There’s no hassle of boxing things up, finding a service center to ship it off to, and waiting four to six weeks to make its way back to you. Go visit your local showroom, ask questions, and be prepared to come home with some samples!

FINANCIAL FOCUS WHICH IRA IS BETTER FOR YOUNGER WORKERS?

THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD www.edwardjones.com

IF YOU’RE AT THE BEGINNING of your career, you might not be thinking too much about the end of it. But even younger workers should be aware of – and saving for – their eventual retirement. And since you’ve got many years until you do retire, you’ve got a lot of options to consider – one of which is whether an IRA may be appropriate for you and, if so, what type.

Essentially, you can choose between a “traditional” IRA and a Roth IRA. (Other types of IRAs are available if you’re selfemployed.) With a traditional IRA, you contribute “pretax” dollars, so your contributions are generally tax-deductible, depending on your income limits and whether you also have a 401(k) or other retirement plan at work. In 2016, you can contribute up to $5,500 to your traditional IRA, although the limit rises once you reach 50. You can fund your IRA with many types of investments – for example, stocks, bonds, and government securities– and your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis. A Roth IRA has the same $5,500 annual contribution limit and can also be funded with many types of investments. But there are some key differences. You can only contribute to a Roth IRA if your income is below a certain threshold, but that threshold is quite high, especially for younger workers starting their careers. So you’ll likely be eligible. However, your contributions are never tax-deductible, so you’re basically funding your Roth IRA with money on which you’ve already been taxed. But your earnings can grow tax free, as long as you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Assuming you can contribute to either a

SandpointLivingLocal.com

24

traditional or a Roth IRA, which should you choose? There’s no one right answer for everyone, but as a younger worker, you may be able to gain two important benefits from contributing to a Roth. First, since you’re probably earning much less now than you will later in your career, you’re likely in a relatively low tax bracket. So it may make sense to pay income taxes now on your Roth contributions, rather than pay the taxes later on withdrawals from a traditional IRA. And second, a Roth IRA may provide more flexibility than a traditional IRA. Usually, the only way to get money from a traditional IRA before you retire is through a short-term loan; otherwise, you can get hit with both taxes and penalties on early withdrawals. But with a Roth IRA, you can withdraw your contributions (not the earnings) penalty free to help pay for your first house or to go back to school. Still, as mentioned above, there’s no hard-andfast rule as to which IRA is better for younger workers. For example, if you are certain you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, you might be better off by taking the yearly tax deductions from your traditional IRA and then paying taxes on the withdrawals when you retire. But that’s a hard prediction for anyone to make. Your tax advisor may be able to provide some guidance on whether a traditional or a Roth IRA is better for you – but either one can be a valuable resource for that day, many years from now, when you say “goodbye” to work and start a new phase of your life. AIRBnB AND HOSTING YOUR HOME ARE YOU COVERED? BY TREVOR CAMPBELL

RENT YOUR HOME

HOME HOSTS

SINCE ITS START nearly 10 years ago, the number of people listing their homes for guest stays through Airbnb has skyrocketed. As more and more vacation goers and business travelers look for alternatives to hotel and motel stays, more and more homeowners see hosting their homes as an opportunity to make a little extra income.

If you purchase a home to use as a vacation property, a second home, or a rental property, there are different policies to cover each use – a standard homeowner’s policy isn’t one of them. In the insurance industry, how you plan to use a home makes a difference.

Airbnb is an online service that allows homeowners to list and rent lodging in their homes for vacation bookings and short term stays. Airbnb, developed in San Francisco, now has more than 1.5 million listings in 34,000 cities around the world.

Airbnb offers what it calls a “Host Guarantee,” but it makes it very clear this “Guarantee” does not replace homeowners or renters insurance. Personal property such as cash, jewelry, collectibles and artwork, if stolen during a guest stay, are not covered under Airbnb’s program. According to its website, the Host Guarantee also does not protect a homeowner from personal liability claims or coverage for shared and common areas of a home.

If you’ve been thinking about this kind of service for your own home, it’s important to understand the role insurance plays, especially when a home is no longer just a home but also generates some income. Coverage Confusion It seems pretty straight forward – you have a homeowner’s policy that should cover your home and its contents. Where things get tricky is the moment you start “renting” or in this case “booking” a room, floor, or space inside your home, on a short term basis. Every homeowner policy is different and every insurance carrier provides different coverages. When you purchase a standard homeowner’s policy, the contract is written with the understanding that a single family home is occupied as such. These kinds of policies often include exclusions for business among other things.

We’ve got you covered with insurance services to protect you and your family.

Airbnb Coverage

Options for Home Hosts As is the case with different hobbies, business endeavors and enterprises, there are options when it comes to insurance coverage. The same holds true for policies that would include coverage for hosting your home through a service such as Airbnb. There are good options available for vacation homes or Airbnb stays. Costs associated with these kinds of specialty policies are higher but so are the risks. As Airbnb and other services continue to grow and our sharing economy continues to evolve, I expect more options will become available. The best advice I can give is to always talk with your agent first so that you know your home and your family are properly protected. The peace of mind that brings is priceless.

TALE OF A PET’S EAR LEARN THE CAUSES, TREATMENTS AND HOW TO PREVENT EAR INFECTIONS BY DR. DAWN MEHRA

T R E AT I N G E A R I N F EC T I O N S EAR INFECTIONS are so very common in dogs and cats. Brushing up on the causes, treatments and prevention of this painful condition might shed some light on this sensitive part of the animal and better help the pet owner understand their part in reducing suffering.

canal are a perfect setup for an infection, the water can promote bacteria and yeast growth and soon the glands produce an excess of wax which is joined by yeast and pus. It isn’t long before a pet is scratching, shaking, or…smelling like dirty socks.

Anatomy

Aural Hematoma

Although there is less hair on the inside of the pinna (ear flap) and canals, the ear is really just an extension of the skin with lots of glandular material that produces a waxy oily secretion. This secretion increases significantly when it’s inflamed. Another difference between your pet’s ear and a human ear is the length of the canal. It’s longer and there is more room for debris to accumulate! The eardrum and middle ear are way down there, only to be seen with a well-lit instrument called an otoscope.

A hematoma is swelling created by a broken blood vessel after bleeding has occurred inside a tissue, and aural (ear) hematoma occur when head shaking breaks the vessel in the pinna (ear flap). The pinna feels like a water balloon. They are a common sequela to chronic ear infections and, depending on their size, are often unresponsive without surgical intervention.

What Happens

Most infections clear with a professional cleaning followed by medication for 10 to 14 days. A simple washing might be adequate, but in many cases, a full ear flush with a combination sedative/analgesic is needed because it it so very important for the veterinarian to visualize the eardrum. We find that besides being pain and stress free, treatments with sedated patients

Treating Ear Infections

Ear infections start up as a response to irritation by either an allergic condition, foreign body (grass awn) or parasite (ear mite/tick). If allergies are responsible, the condition will be recurring. Moisture and a long ear

are safer, faster and more effective because we can be thorough (most medicine works much better without wax and debris in the canal). The end result? Less visits to the hospital. Some ear discharge will need to be plated on the microscopic exam or cultured. Dogs or cats with recurrent infections need to be assessed for underlying conditions like allergy, some cases go beyond medical management and need surgery.

Most infections clear with a professional cleaning followed by medication for 10 to 14 days.

Prevention Most dog owners who have had pets with ear problems have experienced more than their fair share of frustration, because infections have the ability to draw out for months, even years, even with the best of treatment. A logical approach is paramount to success: know what it is, perform proper home care, and have regular recheck appointments. The focus can shift from treatment to prevention once the current infection is tamed. The ability to control underlying allergies, using weekly ear disinfectants or drying agents, can all help keep pets out of discomfort (and the examination room!). MUSIC INSPIRES Local Conservatory preparing musicians for a life of music BY PATTY HUTCHENS MUSIC. IT EVOKES A MULTITUDE of emotions and sparks certain memories. And that is not just for those who listen but for those who perform as well. For musicians, music becomes a part of who they are. For those in North Idaho who aspire to make music a part of their life journey, they are fortunate to have the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint.

developed music programs.

Overseen by Executive Director Karin Wedemeyer, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint first opened in 2009. Their mission is simple – it is to instruct and inspire musical excellence, preparing students to build a love for music as well as compete in the world of music. A music conservatory such as the one in Sandpoint is not designed to be a “flash experience or one-time extracurricular activity” promotes Wedemeyer, but instead a pathway for continuous musical training – preparing students for increased academic connections and performance. “Our students are succeeding in local competitions like Musicfest Northwest and All State. One of our recent graduates is currently pursuing a career in music and was one of few selected to study in Europe at an elite vocal school.”

As the only accredited school of music in the region, the Music Conservatory aims to make a positive impact in the community.

Whether it is individual or group instruction, the staff passionately teaches a multitude of classes for all ages, including preschool and adult learners, and recently began expanding their offering of focused repertoire classes such as Jazz Ensemble, the Young Classical Singer and Shakespeare. “Repertoire classes are designed to bring musicians together focusing on a specific genre or element of skills training,” explained Wedemeyer.

The Conservatory will be hosting two events this spring as a continuation of their “friendraising” campaign, and all are invited to attend. On April 28 at 6pm, over 75 students from the Conservatory’s community programs will be performing at the Panida, sharing the life story and works of Beethoven as part of their performance. Then on May 19 at 7pm, distinguished students of the Conservatory will showcase their talent at a second Panida performance.

Private instruction in piano, voice, guitar and most orchestral instruments rounds out a continuous curriculum, with offerings designed to be consistent and enduring.

Those at the Music Conservatory invite you to stop by or call and learn more about their participation in “Idaho Gives.” For more information go to: www.razoo.com/us/story/Music-Conservatory-Of-Sandpoint

In an effort to further its mission, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint will participate in an online “friendraising” event through the Idaho Nonprofit Center. For thirty days beginning April 5, the Music Conservatory will be asking community members and global web surfers to search out and contribute to the musical vitality of North Idaho by making a contribution to the school’s professionally

“We understand the benefits of music at any age, pursued for a lifetime,” explained Wedemeyer of the gift of music they give the community.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Studies show that continuous exposure to music instruction helps to promote brain development and also connects children socially and emotionally. “Music education in the early years has been linked to greater academic success,” said Wedemeyer.

Through their grant-funded community programs, last year 78 elementary through high school students received weekly instruction from September to May via two orchestras and three choirs. And that enrollment is nearing 100 students this year. “A generous donation by Community Assistance League expanded our ability to provide instrument loans free of charge,” explained Wedemeyer. “ And this year nearly 50 percent of our youth orchestra participants are borrowing an instrument at no charge.”

GOOD NEWS

ENCOURAGING INDEPENDENCE AND CONFIDENCE Goodwill Industries celebrates the lives of those they help change By Heather Alexander Photos courtesy Goodwill Industries

LOOK UP THE ROOT WORDS for encourage [en-courage], and you will find that the word literally means “to cause to be in, or to fill, with courage.” In the years I have worked for Goodwill, I have watched our staff step alongside the people we serve, filling them with courage and hope, to accomplish their goals. For many, it has been the courage to apply for a job. For others, it has been the courage to walk through a job interview and strive on towards the next one when the first door closes. And for still others, it has been the courage to do more things for themselves and move into more independent living, rather than relying on others to help them in their daily tasks. On March 11, Goodwill held our Annual Awards and Recognition Night with over 460 guests, celebrating and honoring the men and women we serve, the employees who go above and beyond to serve and support Goodwill’s

mission, and our community partners. In 2015, Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest served more than 6,200 men, women and teens in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. While each of the stories shared are inspirational, two show the wide variety of services Goodwill is offering in our communities to change local lives. Independence Award: Eugene Our mission at Goodwill is to help people build independence in the communities we serve. So, each year we recognize the achievements of participants who have made great strides toward independence in their lives with our “Independence Award.” This year, six individuals received an Independence Award. Eugene was one of those Independence Award winners. Eugene came to Goodwill a few years ago, a

very quiet and shy man. He began working in a Goodwill store in the shoe department. Quick to learn new skills, he soon started working in other departments, including assisting donors when they brought donations. Eugene quickly became part of the “family” of his co-workers, who describe him as a hard worker who always shows a good attitude and pride in his work. In the last year, Eugene set a goal to begin writing for himself, and he has accomplished that goal with great pride. When Eugene’s name was announced as an Independence Award recipient, his job coaches and the Goodwill store staff who work with him erupted in cheers. His smile and pride were priceless. Graduate of the Year: Alex Goodwill’s Graduate of the Year Award recognizes the accomplishments of a participant who has been employed by a company or organization outside of Goodwill. Last fall, I had the opportunity to meet Alex for

the first time. His case manager recommended Alex as an inspiring story for our newsletter. His story didn’t just inspire me; it inspired our entire organization. Alex didn’t grow up with some of the luxuries and security that many of us take for granted. His family struggled. Often, as a young teen, he was taking care of his siblings, creating meals out of whatever he could find in the kitchen. A big kid, Alex was a good athlete, intimidating on the field and off the field. By the time he was 13, Alex became involved in drugs and alcohol. By the time he was 20, jail was a familiar place. Eventually, Alex realized he had become someone he didn’t like. He missed his family and friends. He wanted to be loved and needed, but he was sitting in a jail cell facing a long sentence. He wanted to change his life. When he was released on parole, Alex was sent to Goodwill to attend job classes. At first, he thought it all a waste of time. But he soon discovered that the caring staff really could make a difference and help him find the resources he needed to become independent. Soon, Alex secured a full time job he loved that would support his family. After several months, Alex received a promotion he never thought possible because of his felony record. His kids

now look at him with pride, and his fiancé is looking forward to marrying her friend who has overcome his demons to live the life he has long desired. He has become a mentor for other men who have felt trapped by their choices, an encourager to youth who are tempted by the same choices he faced, and coworkers who feel like they are stuck. You can learn more about Alex’s story on Goodwill’s YouTube channel at http://bit.ly/1o2JSgO. Goodwill is able to help people like Eugene and Alex because of the support of our donors and shoppers. Out of every dollar earned in our stores, 85 cents funds our mission programs. When you donate and shop at Goodwill, you are truly helping us change lives every day – lives like those of Eugene and Alex. You are helping men and women discover the pride and joy of work, being part of a team, accomplishing tasks they did not know they could tackle, and finding the courage to reach their goals and then reach higher.

FROM FARM GATE TO DINNER PLATE

The award-winning Bonner County Fair provides fun for all ARTICLE PROVIDED BY BONNER COUNTY FAIR

OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES people have flocked to the Bonner County Fair. From its austere beginning in 1927 down at Memorial Field to its current location on North Boyer Road, the award-winning Bonner County Fair is the highlight of the year.

Fast Can You Get Dressed, and Team Obstacle Challenge to name a few. The celebration kicks off with the Bonner County PRCA Rodeo on August 5 and 6. From barrel racing to bull riding, fans travel from far and wide to watch those competing for the champion title. You can bet your spurs and boots that the Bonner County Rodeo will draw the top-ranked athletes across all events. Challenge of Champions Tour, whether it’s an eight-second thrill on a bucking bull or a nailbiting barrel racing finish, the Challenge of Champions Tour will keep everyone on the edge of his or her seat. The Demolition Derby on August 13 is hard-hitting, high-octane, adrenaline action and arguably the most exciting form of motorsports. You are sure to get the biggest bang for your buck at the demo derby.

Every year more than 20,000 fairgoers and visitors are drawn to the exhibit hall, animal barns, livestock sale, commercial exhibits and entertainment. It is harvest time when proud farmers across the county bring in their fattest pumpkin, their prettiest ear of corn or their juiciest tomatoes and are judged against the efforts of their neighbors. Today, the fairgoers are treated to everything from 4-H animals, quilts that have taken months to create, cakes baked painstaking into the shape of a farm or a cowboy boot, and jams and fruits preserved in uniform glass jars. They come to see the demolition derby and watch as fast-talking salesmen trying to sell their goods. Whether they are at the fair to compete or to educate or simply to buy and sell, fairgoers continue to come to the county fair in an effort to be together. It is at the fair where cowpoke meets grunge, where Stetson and pointytoed boots are as common as tattoos and nose rings. It is a county fair crowd, a place where the old, middle-aged and young effortlessly come together and are happy.

Come to the Bonner County Fair August 9 through 13 and join in an American tradition in all its variety. From young 4-H participants competing for blue ribbons to seasonal farmers making deals, the fair is where you can go, in our ever-increasing diversity, and feel like you belong. Award-winning, the Bonner County Fair collected numerous international fairs and expos awards in Agriculture and Communications. In addition, they won the Best Division 1 Competitive Exhibits Award, and over the five divisions was awarded Supreme Champion in Competitive Exhibits.

The fair encompasses a variety of activities and events. The animal barns are where kids and professionals alike keep and groom their animals, getting them ready for the hectic schedule of competitions that take place throughout the fair week. There are competitions for cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens, rabbits, goats and even, occasionally, alpacas and llamas. There are always interactive and team competitions, and this year they will introduce Minute to Win It, How Well Do You Know Your Spouse, Popsicle Stick Contest, Dance Off, Frozen Outfit - How

Volunteer School Mentors Invited Changing lives one child at a time

W

hat if you could change a young person’s life just by listening to them for 30 minutes once a week? You can.

Childers is quick to explain that the mentor’s role is one of sustained support and requires no educational or psychological accreditation. “The mentor is not a tutor and doesn’t need to be qualified as a teacher or counselor. The only skills involved are active listening, problem solving skills and a positive outlook. Mentors aren’t responsible for solving the student’s problems and giving them solutions, either; instead, they work with the student on solving his or her problems. They encourage and help the student to recalibrate their academic approach and try again.”

The Lake Pend Oreille High School (LPOHS) is inviting community volunteers to do just that – actively listen to and encourage a student once a week for a half-hour at the school – as part of the national Check and Connect program launched by the University of Minnesota 25 years ago.

Just as training wheels balance a beginning biker as they learn to pedal and gain their own momentum, so a mentor provides support as the student learns to self-motivate and self-support their own decisions, solutions and goals.

The program pairs volunteer mentors with academically at-risk students, and the resulting relationship prompts the student to engage in their education, discover their strengths and plan for academic success. And it works.

This unique approach works for many reasons, one of which is its ability to transform a student’s shoulder-shrugging acceptance of failure into a proactive plan for success. “They’ve had so much failure, it’s no longer a deterrent for them,” reveals Childers. “It’s become palatable to them. When they are told they must complete an assignment or they’ll fail a class, their response is basically, ‘So?’”

Luke Childers, the graduation coach for LPOHS, summarizes the successful approach in three words – relationships promote engagement. The Check and Connect goals of increased attendance, persistence in school, accrual of credits and school completion rates all dovetail perfectly with the goals of LPOHS. Only one semester into its implementation, the program is starting to show signs of success. The positive results are exciting and Childers is enthusiastic in relating them.

That’s where the life-changing power of the student/mentor relationship kicks in. Relationships create student engagement with the school process. “A relationship with a supportive mentor can make all the difference,” affirms Childers.

“Out of a hundred students, we have 21 students who chose to enroll in the mentor program,” he explains. “The students’ rate of credits failed has dropped from 143 to 50, and 15 of the 21 students have shown improvement in their attendance. When relating available student data from last year to this first semester, we have seen a slight decrease in behavior referrals as well. Even though we are only looking at data from the first half of the year, there seems to be some real improvements.”

Failure is still a part of the process, but with the mentor’s encouragement, the student’s response becomes an assessment of what went wrong and how best to try again. “One of the terms coined within the program is ‘perseverance plus’ because mentors work from a strength-base with the students,” Childers describes, “to support them in realizing and acknowledging their strengths and creating goals and solutions based on those strengths.”

Thus far, teachers have taken the mentoring role. Now that the benefits are so apparent within the LPOHS academic setting, it’s time to launch the program long term, and that calls for the next step: community involvement. Childers believes Sandpoint has “a wealth of individuals who have experience that would be wonderful for these at-risk kids.”

Considering all the challenges they face, the students are amazingly resilient. Returning to school day after day resembles the brave mile-by-mile persistence of the runner refusing to quit even when running into “the wall” of fatigue or feeling as if another step is an impossibility. For a mentor to come alongside the student and be a rest stop of comforting encouragement is to help a winner on their way.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

39

In the special mentor/student relationship, the mentor’s commitment of a year (or more) is of paramount importance. It should consist of continuity in working through problems, and a positive, optimistic attitude that is non-judgmental and compassionate, with the goal of developing the student’s strengths rather than a dependency. The weekly half-hour meetings are best when impromptu at the mentor’s convenience, which works well for volunteers with busy lives that need scheduling flexibility.

What does their mentor-student relationship look like? “We’ve more or less talked. How are you doing? How are things going? Are you going skiing? He likes his longboard and his good friends. I try to keep it light – listening rather than giving advice and orders. It’s about finding ways to relate to another person, and although it’s more challenging with a generational difference, I can relate from having my own children, grandchildren and also being an adolescent myself.”

Volunteers (aka World-Changers) please call Luke Childers, Monday through Friday between 8am and 3pm at 208.263.6121 ext. 4264 or email luke.childers@lposd.org.

And what are things like now? Wonderfully different. “He’s doing well, getting his work done. My role with this young man is to be there. It’s really quite a casual relationship. We’ve talked about what he wants to do when he graduates, and other school-related issues that have set him back a little bit. But he’s there and I just try to be there.”

A Mentor’s Perspective Phil Ronniger is a tall man with a quietly intelligent persona and a beneficent nature that motivates him to help others. Although his background is in career counselling, coaching and job transitioning, what Ronniger mainly brings to the mentoring process is his presence.

For someone who prefers to know exactly what to do and how to do it, guidelines and problem-solving materials are available, and the mentor can carefully track the student’s academic progress. The students aren’t the only recipients of the mentor program benefits. “These teachers have a lot to do,” says Ronniger, “and there’s a lot of energy they have to expend with these kids and any help they can get, I really feel it’s appreciated.”

“These young people often don’t have strong role models they can trust, who’ll be there when they say they’ll be there,” he explains. “And that’s a really important part of this program – someone to be there that they can connect with.”

Listen a life into changing; feel appreciated. Anyone interested?

His shared story with student Dalton Turley began for the same reason many mentor/student relationships begin. As Ronniger tells it, “Dalton wasn’t coming to school very often. His goal was ‘I just want to get out of here.’ He was a delightful young man, great smile, very forthright. His teachers said, ‘Oh gosh he’s great, he helps other students, he’s a giving person, he just doesn’t show up for class!’”

A Bulldog is Only As Strong As His Bite!

ATHLETES OF Caroline Suppiger & Jacob Williams

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

CAROLINE SUPPIGER: SENIOR CAROLINE SUPPIGER knows what it takes to succeed in life. Her hard work and dedication to academics and athletics has propelled her to being named Valedictorian of the class of 2016, a member of two state soccer championships and to being named captain of the varsity tennis team for the last two years. And if that isn’t enough, she also served as the Idaho Association of Student Council’s President where she organized regional and state conferences for 900 students throughout the state.

“I have always been involved in leadership and have loved every second of it,” said Caroline, who is still undecided as to where she will attend college. “I am not sure exactly where this passion can fit into the real world just yet, but I am thinking international business or political science as a college degree.” Getting the most out of her academic experience has always been important to Caroline. “I plan to play intramural or club sports in college but nothing too competitive. I want to focus on my schoolwork,” she said of her future plans.

If there is one lesson that sports has taught her it is that in order to fulfill a common goal, trust is essential. “You have to be able to completely trust your teammates and share the responsibility equally with the whole team.” It is a lesson that will serve her well in life.

JACOB WILLIAMS:

SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL senior Jacob Williams likes adventure. Whether it is wrestling his opponent on the mat or riding a bull or horse, he gives it all he’s got. Jacob has placed at state three times as a wrestler and has been a state runner-up as well. “I enjoy the fight,” he said of the sport. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury left him unable to finish off his season this year, but it will not stop him from pursuing his other passion – rodeo. “I’m fourth in Washington State for bareback riding in rodeo,” shared Jacob, who competes in Washington to keep from having to travel to Southern Idaho for competitions.

Deliveries Available

With injuries having been an obstacle, Jacob said he has learned an important lesson through it all. “When you think you’re done, and you can’t fight anymore, you can. It’s just that simple. Keep on digging, no matter where you are in life, keep on fighting and the outcome will be positive,” he said.

So what is it that would attract someone to riding a bull or bareback riding? “I love the freedom,” said Jacob. Looking ahead Jacob plans to either go to lineman school or attend college in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he hopes to be on the rodeo team. He eventually wants to own his own ranch.

HIKING THE INLAND NORTHWEST THE TRAILS OF THE SELKIRK MOUNTAINS

ARTICLE & PHOTOS BY MARY TERRA-BERNS

SandpointLivingLocal.com

HIKING IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN. The fresh air, the scenery nature provides and the exercise relaxes us in ways not easily obtained anywhere else. Hiking not only reduces the stress of our daily lives, it gives us pause to appreciate the world around us. And that break from the everyday routine is what gives us new ideas and can help us be creative. In a journal article published by “PLOS ONE,” researchers Ruth Ann and Paul Atchley and David L. Strayer describe just that in their research about disconnecting from technology and getting out into the natural world. Their results showed a cognitive advantage in creativity and problemsolving when we spend time in a natural setting. Test subjects (Outward Bound participants) showed a 50 percent increase in performance on a creativity/problem-solving test after spending four days backpacking. David Straker, adjunct assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, also observed evidence of improved brain function in the outdoors noting, “Exercising in nature can have more mental health benefits than on a treadmill.” Fortunately we live in the Inland Northwest − an area with abundant opportunities to get out into the natural world and improve our brain function! There are numerous hiking trails that lead to wonderful alpine lakes where you can fish, scramble up to a peak for awesome views or just

relax and let your brain go about restoring some prefrontal cortex-mediated executive processes. Every spring, my husband and I look forward to more daylight and swapping snowshoes for hiking boots. With fly rods strapped to our packs, we head to one of our favorite destinations - the Selkirk Mountains. The mountain range begins at Mica Peak, southwest of Coeur d’Alene, and extends 200 miles into Canada to the Kinbasket Lake Reservoir. The range was named after Thomas Douglas, the fifth Earl of Selkirk, not the marooned sailor, Alexander Selkirk, the hypothetical prototype of Robinson Crusoe. Typically our first spring trek is to Harrison Lake, at the Pack River headwaters. If conditions allow, Harrison Peak and Little Harrison Lake are options from here too. Upper Pack River Road (trail #231), a few miles north of Sandpoint on the west side of Highway 95 at Samuels, follows the Pack River to its headwaters. The road is paved to the BonnerBoundary county line where it becomes gravel and can be a bit of a wicked ride from there if the road hasn’t been graded. Harrison Lake trailhead (trail #217) is at the end of the road, which is about 20 miles. This very popular (especially on weekends) six-mile round trip hike starts as an old road that narrows to a trail about half-way to the lake. Nice views of “The Beehive” (Beehive

Mountain) can be seen along the way. As you near the lake you will pass the “two-mile snag” and then the junction with Trail #6. Trail #6 originates in the Myrtle Creek drainage, west of Bonners Ferry, and is a slightly longer (4.5 miles one way) alternate route to reach Harrison Lake and Peak, as well as Myrtle Lake. Immediately after Trail #6, you will cross the lake’s outlet stream and start climbing the exposed granite just below the lake. At the upper edge of the granite, you enter the timber around the lake where the trail branches; some trails leading to dispersed camping sites. Harrison is a great lake for fishing success, especially for kids. Idaho Fish and Game stocks cutthroat trout here, and they are usually very hungry and fun to catch. Fishing regulations apply. If you plan on camping, secure food storage is required to discourage bears, and a food storage box is available. Harrison Peak, (7,292 feet) with its unique profile, reminds me of a huge ocean wave turned to stone as it begins to break. Summiting Harrison Peak is not for the faint of heart and will require some dedicated brain function involving busting through brush,

rock hopping, and firm footing. You can access Harrison Peak by climbing the ridge north of the lake. As you summit the peak be prepared to feel an abundance of wind around you. If the wind doesn’t bother you, and you aren’t afraid of heights, the view on a clear day is spectacular. From here you can see quite a few Selkirk peaks including Roman Nose and Gunsight. Also, immediately east of the summit, as is the case on many Idaho peaks, you can see an old fire lookout camp from the 1930s. Fire lookouts dotted the high country of Idaho in the early 1900s. Ray Kresek, author of “Fire Lookouts of the Northwest,” notes that Idaho had more lookouts than any other state – more than 900 in the 1930s. Initially many were tree lookouts - basically a tree with a ladder nailed to it or one with spikes pounded into the trunk (Harrison Peak itself was sufficient). Tree lookouts evolved into cupola style buildings, many built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. In addition to constructing lookouts, the CCC built many of the backcountry trails we use today. Back at the lake, if you prefer to keep some vegetation around you, but still want a little bit of a challenge (i.e., no trail), you can hike

cross-country to Little Harrison Lake. Little Harrison Lake is only about a mile south of Harrison Lake as the crow flies. However, for those of us on the ground, it requires some orienteering through brush and granite while side-hilling for about two miles. I recommend reviewing your route on Google Earth, printing the photo, and having a topographic map in your back pocket. The effort is worth it, Little Harrison is a gorgeous lake and you will likely have it to yourself. It is regularly stocked with cutthroat trout and the fishing is good. You can reach Little Harrison Lake from Beehive Lakes too. Here again you should be prepared for a bit of a challenge; there is no trail and you will need to engage your mental

creativity and problem-solving abilities, as well as every muscle in your body. Scramble up the ridge to the north of Beehive Lake, at the top of the ridge you will notice the backside is steep and rocky. The best route is whatever works for you. Keep in mind you have to come back this way or hoof it over to Harrison Lake. The Beehive Lakes trailhead is at the end of a short fork in the road about a mile before the Harrison Lake trailhead. This is a longer hike, about five miles one way, with a few switchbacks before a level stretch, then up exposed granite to the lake. Once you hit the level section, while admiring the view, keep your eyes open for the small pond a little ways below the trail; this is a favorite spot for moose. We often see

them wading and feeding around the pond. The Beehive Lakes are not only popular with people, they are very popular with mosquitos, especially in the spring. Come prepared to fend off the little beasts. So, to enhance your creativity and improve your problem-solving abilities, dust off your hiking boots and schedule your next hike to the Selkirks. Health & Lifestyle TRAIN BETTER

Spring Cleaning

Get a jump on your health this spring. By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor EVERY YEAR AROUND this time we get a primal urge to have some sort of spring cleaning in our lives. The birds start singing, the daylight lingers and buds begin to bloom. I’m not necessarily talking about your house, closet or office. What if our bodies yearn for a more intrinsic cleaning. This year why not spring clean yourself? We can take part in a sort of rebirth that can be done every spring. Take stock in where your health is and where you’d like it to be.

you see? Is it crammed with BPA lined cans of food, boxes of cookies and crackers, and jars of old condiments? Or do you see foods that can nourish your body? Here’s a hint – if you have a jar of basic ranch dressing, it’s a sign that this process may take a while. Pull everything out and check the labels of not just the ingredients but the expiration dates. Make sure you know what food is in your house and start to plan what you want to replace everything you purge with. I understand that eating healthy can be expensive and time consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. Bad health is much more expensive than healthy food ever was.

When beginning the ritual of tidying your being, I believe we should start at the center. Go look in your pantry and refrigerator. What do

I understand that eating healthy can be expensive and time consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. Bad health is much more expensive than healthy food ever was. After you finish, it’s time to make some lists. One list of things in your life you aren’t happy with and would like to change, and one list of things in your life you’d like to accomplish. You can think big or small. Next to each item notate what daily habits are helping you accomplish your goals and what habits are impeding your success. I should have warned you this might take a lot of paper. Now, number the goals from easiest to hardest or most time consuming to conquer. If you start simple, it’s easy to keep your momentum going to accomplish more and more. If you know what you are doing to help or hinder your process, you now have a basic outline for success. And in my experience, once a goal is outlined on paper, it becomes much easier to put a plan in action and the obstacles seem surmountable. These lists can help you work through mental and emotional roadblocks that you never realized you had. It can be quite cathartic of you take some time with this. I’m assuming that one of your goals that you discover is in reference to exercise. If you read any of my articles you knew it was bound to get to this subject at some point. It’s paragraph four so this is probably a personal record for me. Yes, exercise, or better yet train. I’m hoping

that your primary goal in this arena is strength. I have found that with just a basic improvement in full body, multi-planar strength, a myriad of ailments seem to disappear. It’s been proven by countless studies to be beneficial in countless ways that you don’t need me to list off but are none the less indisputable. I once had a gentleman salesperson at an unnamed homewares store tell me (even though I didn’t ask) that he didn’t exercise because it was his belief that we only have so many heart beats and he didn’t want to use them all at one time. I can’t help someone like that. No one can. The only defining moment we have a definitive amount of heart beats is the second after your last one. Until then, it’s not too late to begin a program to get stronger. Learn to plank, pull, push, rotate, squat and carry. If you practice what I consider the six foundational movement patterns, your life will get better. You can start to clear the cobwebs of immobility. No one ever wants to be limited by poor health and almost everyone has the power to do better. Train better. Feel better. Be better.

MODIFY FORM, MINIMIZE IMPACT PROPER RUNNING FORM AND INJURY PREVENTION

STOP THE PAIN

PHASES OF H E A L T H Y T I PRUNNING

BY RYANNE LEMON, pta, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH BLOOMSDAY JUST OVER a month away, many folks in the Inland Northwest are most likely lacing up their shoes and getting outside to enjoy this nice weather in preparation for the seven-mile feat. Most runners can agree that running is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities in which to participate. But unfortunately, it is also an activity that comes with a high chance of injury. Some studies show that as many as 79 percent of runners suffer from a running related injury each year. There are many ways in which a runner can minimize chance of injury, one of which is modifying running form to minimize the impact on the body. There are basically three phases in the running gait, each of which can be broken down into several different segments. There are differing views among therapists how to define and label the phases of gait, but in general, it is agreed that there is prelanding phase, followed by an impact stage, and finally, a toe-off phase. During each of these phases of gait, there are considerations runners can make to get the most out of stride and to minimize impact for injury prevention. In pre-landing, the brain sends a signal to muscles to prepare for impact, which causes the muscles to contract to stabilize the joints. In this phase, good posture is key. This means keeping your upper torso straight with lower back not arched and head directly over shoulders. Arms are bent at 90 degrees, relaxed at your side to aid in trunk stability. Having poor posture can cause a runner to lean back, which leads to over striding and increased impact upon foot strike. To aid in good posture, it is important to keep a strong core by doing core strength and stability exercises.

of the foot and takes the runner through midstance ending at toe-off. Some runners land with a heel strike, but a more efficient running gait is to land on the mid foot or forefoot and then roll onto the toe. One way to minimize impact is to shorten stride length which promotes midfoot and forefoot contact and helps decrease overall ground reaction force. Another way to decrease this impact is to be mindful of landing softly. This can be reinforced by plyometric exercises where the runner completes a series of jumping movements focusing continuously on light landings.

Your Goals Are Our Priority!

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

In toe-off, the hip goes into maximal extension. If hip flexors are tight, runners are more apt to excessive strain and arch in the back. Having flexible hip flexors and strong gluteal and hamstring (hip extensor) muscles can help maximize extension to get the most out of the stride during this phase. Getting a professional gait analysis can be very beneficial for any runner to help determine where weaknesses lie within their stride and what exercises or stretches can be done to help correct any problems. Hope to see you at Bloomsday in May!

HEALTHY TIDBITS NEWS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY DR. WILL MIHIN

“Learning from experience is a faculty almost never practiced.” —Barbara Tuchman MENTAL ATTITUDE: Being Lazy Shrinks Your Brain. Less active individuals appear to have smaller brains later in life. This study included 1,583 participants who took a treadmill test to rate their fitness at around age 40 and again at around age 60. After the second treadmill test, they also underwent an MRI. The results revealed those who were less physically fit during both tests had lower brain volume than those who maintained high physical fitness levels during the course of the study. Researcher Dr. Nicole Spartano writes, “From other studies, we know that exercise training programs that improve fitness may increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain and improve neuroplasticity over the short term. Over the course of a lifetime, these mechanisms may have an impact on brain aging and prevent cognitive decline in older age,” (Neurology, February 2016). Health Alert: Acetaminophen Use Before Birth Linked to Childhood Asthma. Women who experience pain, fever or the flu during pregnancy commonly use acetaminophen. Now, a new study finds that exposure to acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol, before birth and during infancy increases a baby’s risk of developing asthma during

childhood. Lead study author Dr. Maria Magnus notes, “Uncovering potential adverse effects is of public health importance, as paracetamol is the most commonly used painkiller among pregnant women and infants,” (International Journal of February 2016).

Diet: Eating Eggs Does Not Increase the Risk of Heart Disease. Researchers analyzed the dietary habits of 1,032 men and found a relatively high intake of dietary cholesterol (from eating eggs daily, for example) is not associated with an increased risk of incident coronary heart disease, not even in people genetically predisposed for higher blood cholesterol levels via the apolipoprotein E type 4 allele (APOE4 allele), which impacts cholesterol metabolism. The findings suggest that cholesterol consumption at high levels is not as dangerous to our health as is currently perceived (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, February 2016). The results of the study revealed that sixto-eight sessions of cervical and thoracic manipulation provided greater reductions in headache intensity, frequency, and duration than a course of treatment involving only mobilization and exercise. The authors of the study add that the benefits of manipulation

persisted when the patients were re-examined three months later (BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, February 2016). Wellness/Prevention: Is Ulcerative Colitis Treatable with Vinegar? A study involving mice suggests that vinegar or its main ingredient, acetic acid, may alleviate ulcerative colitis. This condition is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract that can cause abdominal pain and other symptoms. In the study, researchers found that vinegar reduced inflammation in the colon by suppressing proteins and molecular processes that trigger inflammation. They also found acetic acid exposure resulted in an increase in beneficial bacteria in the gut. The findings may lead to a simple way of treating ulcerative colitis in the future (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, January 2016).

“I

’m in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love. And it’s difficult to analyze love when you’re in it.” —John Steinbeck With the dawn of each day and new breath of life, hope begins. But the world has this quirky and unwelcomed way of seeping through the cracks to taint what was once lovely. Things break down. Babies get sick. People die. Hearts are broken. Sometimes it seems that the hardships are incessant; reprieve appears as a glimpse of sun melding into an unattainable horizon. We’re left standing amidst a suffering world where it feels impossible to know where to turn. There seems to be no way to fully avert the gaze of despair as it casts its ominous shadow into each life. Despite the adversities of the world, hope is restored because heroes still exist. State troopers from the Montana Hope Project serve as confirmation that no matter how insurmountable the mountain, goodness will prevail. Nowhere conjures the image of a hero like the state of Montana. With the utterance of its name, we dream of cowboys riding on horses across a mountainous backdrop. It’s the code of the West; the cowboy way is that of strong moral and noble character. The Montana Highway Patrol upholds that same reputation of goodness and valor by their efforts as officers and as grantors of wishes. The peacekeepers of our country face imminent danger and serve tirelessly to protect their

fellow citizens. Few professions, such as law enforcement, necessitate a noble willingness to lay down one’s life to serve humanity, but there remains to be an untold story of hope. There are multiple accounts of how law enforcement officials go above and beyond the requirements of the job to serve those that are the most vulnerable. The Montana Hope Project was established by the Association of Montana Troopers to serve quite possible the most vulnerable; the critically ill children of Montana. In 1984, a small group of Montana Highway Patrol officers formed the Montana Hope Project as a way to bring cheerfulness to children with serious medical issues. Officers were able to bestow three wishes that year and have been able to grant an average of 20 annual wishes thereafter. For the last 32 years, this compassionate organization has given nearly 500 children their one special wish. Of those wishes, the leading contender has undoubtedly been an expense paid trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Over half of the recipients choose Disney World, but they are not limited to this destination as their only option. The Montana Hope Project has been able to grant wishes as obscure as a hot tub, a pop-up camper, a restored truck, a trip to the pro bowl, Italy, Hawaii, and one recipient was even able to meet country music star Toby Keith. The former president of the Hope Project writes “the word ‘no’ had always been an unacceptable answer for me.” A culture of granting every wish, no matter how seemingly outlandish, has been established within the Montana Hope

Project. No matter the expense or the obstacle, these Montana heroes bring the dream to reality. With every true hero, there is always humility. The focus of the Montana Hope Project is undoubtedly on the children. One does not fully realize the impact of these great deeds until the accounts are offered firsthand from a family. I had the great pleasure of interviewing a family from Belgrade whose daughter Charley was a 2015 wish recipient. As writers, we love to tell a great story; we thrive on painting an image with our words so that we may bring the reader into the emotion of the moment. Never before had I experienced a quivering jaw in effort to “keep it together” to conduct an interview. I felt so deeply moved to hear the great accounts of this organization and what they really do for families. The extent of their good deeds far surpasses the realm of what one could ever imagine. As I typed and listened to the story, Kim gave her depictions of her daughter Charley’s journey with cancer. It’s difficult for the heart not to break as one hears the encounters of someone that has braved a storm. Maybe it’s because I’m a mom of a little girl that the story brought such a lump to rise in my throat and the tears to well up in my eyes. The thought of a sick child certainly hovers near the top of a parent’s greatest fears. When your child is born, your existence will never be the same. All hopes and dreams rest in the breath of this new life. They grow, they learn, they laugh and cry and their parents do so with them. One never imagines that they will one day have to face

such a battle. After talking with this mom for a few moments, I had a sense that this family is quite incredible. There were no complaints about the mountains of life, just a narrative of strength and bravery. Kim gave her description of traveling to Denver and later to Billings to see specialists for Charley’s illness. It was Charley’s oncologist that brought the Montana Hope Project to light for the Gregg family. With collaboration between the oncologist and Charley’s parents, Charley’s one special wish was submitted to the Montana Hope Project. Her dream was to go to none other than the “Happiest Place on Earth” – Disney World. When a child has been selected by the Montana

heroes

Hope Project to receive a wish, state troopers share the news by coming to the home and visiting with the parents. It’s not an informal call or a letter, but a genuine and personalized visit where officers take time from their day to meet with families. There was a slight sense of urgency for the Gregg family to be able to go to Disney World sooner than later due to the arrival of a new baby in the spring. It would be just about one year after Charley’s cancer diagnosis that the Montana Hope Project would make her biggest dream come true. Prior to departure, the Hope Project hosts a “send-off ” party for each family where state troopers visit again. For Charley, they delivered their signature “hope” bear as well as additional funding to cover any

potential extra expenses for the family. In November of 2015, little Charley was able to celebrate her fifth birthday with her family on a week long, all-expense paid trip to Disney World provided by the Montana Hope Project. As I spoke to her mother on the phone for the interview, I could hear the inflections of Charley’s tiny voice in the background uttering words of pure delight. As Kim spoke of Charley having her birthday breakfast in a castle just for a princess, Charley wanted to make sure that I knew that she had eaten pancakes in the shape of Mickey Mouse. It’s unquestionable that the Montana Hope Project makes every attempt to give these kids and their families the world. If the send-

off party and an all-expense paid trip aren’t enough, the families are given a rental car and a pass to almost every venue imaginable for that area. In Orlando, wish recipients and their families stay at a nonprofit, 79-acre resort that is appropriately called “Give Kids the World.” The 144-villa resort serves ice cream for breakfast and a cookie truck drives through the village in the afternoon. In the last year, the Hope Project has undergone some major administrative transformations. Not only did they say goodbye to the Project’s president due to retirement, but to a variety

of integral coordinators as well. Despite the alterations of key players, the Hope Project was still able to grant 28 wishes in 2015. When the average cost of each wish is $7,500, the combined annual fundraising total is well over $200,000. The Montana Hope Project is a nonprofit organization and does not receive any grants or government funding. All fundraising is generated through the Association of Montana Troopers, and the Hope Project is not associated with any other national wish organization. The troopers raise money for the requests through

hope fly fishing benefit only represent the surface of the effort to bring a child’s wish to reality. The Ride for Hope is the Project’s greatest fundraiser for the year. The ride consists of, but is not exclusive to, motorcycles. It starts in six different locations throughout the state of Montana where participants meet in a predetermined city for a celebration banquet. For this year, riders will meet in Polson at the KwaTaqNuk Resort at Flathead Lake. The 27th Annual Ride for Hope will be on July 9, 2016. Interested participants and volunteers are asked to contact Dave Evans at devans@montanahope.org or call 406.949.7433. Once a child has been selected for a wish, they are considered to be forever a part of

the Montana Hope Project family. The Hope Project offers two annual, all-expense paid reunions for families. It’s an opportunity for wish recipients to connect and an opportunity to meet the new families. In winter, families gather at Fairmont Hot Springs for a themed event. Last year, over 400 people came for the Polar Express event which even included a visit from Santa Claus. Each summer, families gather near Glacier National Park where children are treated to helicopter rides, boat tours and ice cream. The Project and their sponsors give every ounce of what they have to bring hope and goodness to these children. Charley’s story has a happy ending. Her mother was pleased to report that the cancer is in remission. There is truth in that a positive sense of hope can change every

Everyone struggles with hardship at some point, but isn’t it better with someone by your side? Officers of the Montana Highway Patrol are heroes that bring hope to hurting hearts. They deserve respect and acknowledgement for their kind deeds. If you would like to be involved by donating or sponsoring an event, please visit: montanahope.org.

FIREPITS The outdoor season is something we try to extend as long as possible. But chilly nights don’t mean they have to end. You can cozy up around an outdoor fire pit. There are many affordable and portable types available, including ones with an open flame or those covered with mesh to keep the sparks from flying and keep the kids safe. There are also gas powered or wood burning ones depending upon what you desire. So grab some marshmallows, a warm blanket and start the season early and extend it as long as possible!

[SETTING THE MOOD]

LIGHTING It can make a world of difference in your outdoor living space. Whether it is deck lighting to add ambiance or lighting along a path to make it safer, lighting can add much to your outdoor living space. Low-voltage LED light fixtures run on 12-volt current that’s much safer than regular 120-volt household current, making installation DIY-friendly. You can also use string lights, which offer both versatility and style. They can be found in many styles and sizes, and you can even change up the colors with the season! It’s a great way to add some festivity to your outdoor lighting!

There are several factors to consider when choosing your outdoor patio furniture. You will want to be sure to choose weather resistant furniture. If you have a small area, you may want to think about incorporating benches on your deck to provide more seating space. If you are one who likes to change things up for different occasions, consider choosing a monochromatic theme so you can accessorize and change things up with different pillows and other accessories.

HOT TUBBIN’ IT What better way to relax after a long day than in your own backyard hot tub? There are many options available when it comes to hot tubs and, depending on your needs, you will want to plan before making a quick decision. The first thing to decide is how many people you would like your hot tub to seat. Will you use it for entertaining guests or just for you and your family? Secondly, when deciding where to place your spa, get a perspective of the space, accessibility for the users and proximity to the electrical source. You will also want to consider the privacy and view desired.

OUTDOOR DINING

[WATER FEATURE]

FOUNTAINS The sound of water can be very soothing. Outdoor fountains are becoming increasingly popular and not just to add a sense of peace and serenity to your outdoor living, but to also block out the noise of neighbors, traffic and more. There are many options available for all budgets ranging from plug-in units to custom designs that become the focal point of your outdoor experience. You will want to keep in mind that the further the flowing water travels, the louder the sound becomes. The good news is that all fountains have a recirculating pump, so be sure to get an adjustable one so you can find the level that is right for you!

Dining alfresco. It’s a time of gathering together family and friends and escaping from your daily routine. There are some things to consider when setting up your outdoor dining area. Will you need shelter from the late afternoon and early evening sun? There are ways to achieve this without spending a lot of money. Take a piece of fabric to create your own canopy, changing it up as the seasons change. To provide ambiance to your outdoor dining experience, utilize tabletop lanterns and even provide some fresh cut flowers from the garden.

[LANDSCAPING]

Your New Home Keys to a successful real estate purchase Article by Raniel Diaz

I WILL NEVER FORGET when my wife and I bought our very first home in the hills of Irvine, California. The year was 2003 and most of you reading this know exactly what was happening. Pure, uninhibited euphoria. We stood on a half-built parking lot outside the model home, surrounded by empty fields and at least 500 other people, staying focused on the builder representative with the megaphone who was announcing the “lucky lottery” winners of phase 1A, out of only eight sparkly yet-to-bebuilt homes. Looking back on that day - it was crazy. I remember writing the deposit check adding “Praise the Lord!” in the memo section. Then, it was off to the races: floor plan layouts, lists of standard features, upgrades, visits to the design center followed by a myriad of trips to the build site for a visual progress update. To say some things have changed since then would appear to be the real estate understatement of the decade, but then again, have they? Even with tighter lending requirements, bank oversight, and progress in consumer protection and disclosures, today’s perfect cocktail of tight existing supply, continued historically low interest rates and migratory patterns of the American workforce, we’re continuing to see near recordsetting supply of new homes. Regionally and nationally, new housing starts are hitting eightyear highs, and it seems like we’ve come full circle - at least that’s what the charts are saying. If you’re thinking about buying a new home, there really has never been a better time than the present. So, consider some helpful tips if you’re looking to break ground with a new build to ensure the experience is everything you hope it would be. Make a financial plan off-site. Work with a knowledgeable lender on a pre-approval. Before soaking in the smell of a new model home and letting the professional lighting and cozy staging close the deal, remember that you

SandpointLivingLocal.com

should be prepared to know what you qualify for first. A lender, especially a local one familiar with your particular market, will help you chart out a course for success. So, when you’re looking at base pricing and all the options that you can’t live without - you can have a plan to stay inside your comfort range. Just like eating and shopping local, try your regional and community banks and credit unions for good personal service and flexible products. In addition, a number of lenders have programs to lock your low interest rate in for an extended

period of time. This can be a big help as interest rates will likely edge higher in the months ahead. Plan to buy what you can afford today. Try to avoid making assumptions about your financial future. Think you’re about to get that promotion at work? Or convinced that home prices will have double-digit annual appreciation rates for the next three to five years? Check the optimism at the door. A good rule of thumb: practice as much common sense in this area as possible.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

79

Anyone who has been in the housing market for the past decade knows what could happen when we expect unabated linear growth. Prepare to borrow what you can afford now, not what you think you can afford later. Just because the meeting with that lender went really well, and they’re prepared to approve you “up to” a certain amount doesn’t mean you need to spend it all. Common sense isn’t as “common” as you would think in the emotionally-charged world of real estate. Partner with a Realtor® to represent and protect you.

There are some who would expect to get a better deal if they work directly with a builder. In a majority of instances this is largely incorrect. In fact, most new construction sites have a realtor on site tasked with representing the builder as a selling agent. In most instances, it is beneficial to utilize a buying agent who represents and protects your specific interests. After all, the selling agent is primarily tasked with representing the interests of their employer and their strategic financial agendas. When working with a team of professionals, a relational investment goes a long way. Home shoppers should consider interpersonal tactics at all times when navigating a home purchase - knowing that one is working with a group of professional real estate agents, lenders, contractors, interior designers and builders. If building from the ground up, this relationship will last nearly six months and beyond - so one should be respectful of both

each individual’s time and potential influence in your personal success. Those who forget to be courteous during conversations with people involved in the process may find themselves at the bottom of many priority lists. In 2016, builders are operating from a position of strength, minimal anxiety - expect it to continue in the foreseeable future. At this point in time, builders are comfortable with letting the droves of eager buyers come to them and are not concerned with finding someone else if a deal doesn’t go through. That said, there is very little “wiggle room” in price negotiations in the new home arena. In fact, outside of some small buyer incentives, don’t bank on your ability to negotiate a lower-thanasking price unless you’re getting in late to the appreciation party or riding the first wave of market correction and possible downturn. As a leading indicator of the housing economy, new construction inventory levels will often tell the

SandpointLivingLocal.com

80

story before it is written. With spring right around the corner, those watching the real estate market closely are seeing a set-up for some early fireworks. The amount of potential inventory that could hit the market in the next few months could be staggering. In the third quarter of last year, over 1 million homeowners nationwide emerged from underwater mortgages and the trend has continued as we have seen regional appreciation across the board since. With a likely increase in existing home inventory levels, it will be interesting to see how new home builders respond to it. Either way, most would agree, real estate will always remain crazy no matter the direction. Raniel Diaz is a Real Estate Agent at Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

COLORS

PICK YOUR PALETTE Experts advise that to make a space look good without much risk, it is wise to use darker colors for the floor, medium colors for the walls and lighter ones for the ceiling – basically replicating the outdoor environment. When choosing colors from a color wheel, those next to one another on the color wheel such as blue and green, are more casual and relaxing and work best in private spaces, such as your bedroom. Another word of advice is to divide the colors in your interior space into components of 60/30/10. The wall color representing the dominant color, the furniture upholstery the 30 percent and the accessories the 10 percent.

THEME

CHOOSE YOUR THEME Choosing Your Interior Theme – You want your home to be a reflection of who you are. Are you traditional? Do you like the “cottage” look of distressed finishes and vintage accessories? Or are you more modern and drawn to sleek lines and cool colors? If you are decorating a beach house or a lake front cabin, you may choose to decorate in a nautical theme. After choosing your “style,” decide if you would like to incorporate certain influences from around the world. French country? Tuscan? There are many possibilities. Finally choose your favorite colors. And remember, it is your living space and it should reflect you.

FURNITURE

REUSE & REPURPOSE

Don’t throw it away! Find a way to put that older furniture to use! If you have old benches that are taking up space in the garage, sand them down, paint them and stack them on top of one another to make a fun and unique bookcase. Take that old chest that used to hold your blankets and turn it into a filing cabinet for your home office. That old door you were ready to take to the dump, paint it and turn it sideways for a unique headboard. Wondering what to do with those old window shutters? Hang them on the wall for the perfect organizer! The possibilities are endless. Before you throw out those things that you think are no longer useful, search the Internet for ideas on how to repurpose your old belongings into treasures!

WA L L A RT CLORS

HANG IT UP

That which you choose to hang on your walls, is an expression of who you are and allows you to be surrounded by your favorite pieces. According to interior designers, the following tips will help you achieve this while making sure the piece fits the space. When choosing art to hang, mirror the size of the wall. A long horizontal wall should have a piece that is long and horizontal as well. And don’t be afraid to fill the wall either. Vary the texture of your pieces, whether it’s a photograph or canvas art, variety is good! Frames should also reflect the architecture of the room and complement the furniture. Lastly, consider lighting and glare when hanging that favorite piece of art. Photo pictured is courtesy Lakeshore Decor in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

AN EXQUISITE

...AND IT’S JUST ACROSS THE BORDER

TASTE OF EUROPE BY DAN AZNOFF

T

he Canadian city of Vancouver has always held a special place in my heart. First of all, it’s the only municipality that requires a last name (B.C.). More importantly, it was the place where I spent the first three days of married life with my bride 36 years ago. That’s why we try to cross the border every summer to celebrate. There are literally thousands of ways to enjoy the urban setting and world-class offerings of this truly international city. Here are a few of the attractions that make our visits to Vancouver memorable every year. Coincidently, our anniversary coincides with the monthlong Celebration of Light international fireworks competition over Vancouver Harbour. Competing countries take turns turning the summer night skies into a rainbow of colors and heart-pounding thunder. We typically get to see the show produced by the pyromaniacs from Spain during the first weekend of August. The fireworks spectacular runs every weekend in July and concludes the first week of August. The celebration attracts crowds of up to 400,000 along the shores of the inner bay. Lodging Galore Vancouver offers a variety of options for lodging, from modest motels on the outskirts of downtown to one of the two dozen bed and breakfasts nestled in residential

neighborhoods. If budget is not an issue, there’s always the iconic Hotel Vancouver with its afternoon tea. Our home away from home for jaunts across the 49th parallel is the Executive Hotel Le Soleil on Hornby Street discreetly tucked in the heart of the financial district between office towers, mega banks and government buildings. The four-star boutique hotel offers the definition of casual elegance. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is considerate, but not overly zealous. And the beds are simply amazing. My wife and I were so enamored with the sheets and comforter one year that we asked the concierge for the brand so we could continue to pamper ourselves at home. Check out their website at hotellesoleil.com/vancouver. The central location of our hotel provides easy access to some of the city’s best restaurants and top attractions. The downtown core in summer is always vibrant with street vendors and festivities. Just down the street and around the corner from Le Soleil is the Vancouver Art Gallery with its distinctive exhibits by local artists. The gallery’s European collection includes paintings by Dutch masters that date back to the 17th century. The former courthouse on West Georgia Street is 41,400 square feet of galleries and exhibits that houses more than 10,000 permanent artifacts as well as plays host to traveling collections from galleries in Europe, Asia and America.

A stroll through the wooded park takes visitors past lush gardens, a forest of totem poles, monuments and sculptures that trace the history of the city of Vancouver and the province of British Columbia.

THERE ARE TOO MANY RESTAURANTS, TOO MANY TASTY SAMPLES AND NOT ENOUGH HOLES LEFT IN MY BELT TO MAKE A DENT IN THE CHOICES OF EDIBLE OPTIONS. The museum’s crown jewel is a permanent exhibit of works and writings by Canadian artist Emily Carr inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. vanartgallery.bc.ca Top Attraction According to TripAdvisor.com, the number one attraction in Vancouver is Stanley Park. I will not disagree. The 1,001-acre public park adjacent to downtown is almost entirely surrounded by the waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay. A stroll through the wooded park takes visitors past lush gardens, a forest of totem poles, monuments and sculptures that trace the history of the city of Vancouver and the province of British Columbia. There are boggy

wetlands and century-old Western red cedar, big leaf maple and Douglas fir trees. For those not interested in exploring by foot, there is a classic steam locomotive that takes visitors on a scenic tour around the perimeter of the park. vancouver.ca/parks-recreationculture/stanley-park.aspx The highlight of the park for us is the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre. The Aquarium currently houses around 300 species of fish, almost 30,000 invertebrates and 56 species of amphibians and reptiles, as well as 60 mammals and dozens of birds. We were lucky enough to be at the aquarium when the beluga whale Aurora give birth to her calf Nala and witnessed the baby take its first nourishment. vanaqua.org

For the more adventurous spirits, there is the Capilano Suspension Bridge located just 10 minutes north of the city. The bridge is 460 feet long and 130 feet above the river. The suspension bridge, which has an admission fee, is part of a private facility that draw more than 800,000 visitors a year. capbridge.com In addition to the bridge, the park offers miles of easy to moderate trails that offer close-up experiences with nature and some breathtaking views back toward the city and west to the Pacific Ocean. Traditional diners will enjoy the charm of the Gastown. The area was designated as a historic district in 2009.

Instead of recommending one restaurant over another, for the purpose of this article, I will direct readers to the Yaletown District bordered by False Creek, Robson and Homer Streets. The area that was dominated by heavy industry and railroad tracks was given a facelift in 1986 for the World Expo and is now one of the most densely populated areas of the city. Yaletown is home to trendy sidewalk cafes, breweries and popular eateries. Most of the establishments require advanced reservations, even on weeknights during the off season. But I would be selfish if I did not mention the ONLY restaurant we’ve gone back to on multiple occasions, the Blue Water Café on Hamilton Street (about a mile walk from Le

Soleil.) According to a review written by a tourist from San Diego, the Blue Water Café has “mind-blowing sushi.” We normally stick to some of the chef ’s exclusive presentations of shell fish, his cioppino or a simple piece of grilled halibut. Why fool with perfection? One thing is certain. Do not ask for an extra fork if you order the chocolate cake because you will not want to share it. The city offers something for virtually every taste and every budget. Don’t forget your passport or enhanced driver’s license and bring a large dose of patience for the time you’ll spend waiting to cross back into Washington at the border. For those with limited amounts of patience, I recommend AmTrak.

ROASTED RHUBARB & MARZIPAN TART SERVE WITH SWEET SYRUP

To the uninitiated, the mention of Rhubarb might as well result in a wrinkled nose. However the often misunderstood ingredient brings surprising benefits to a variety of dishes. Rhubarb dates back to 2700 BC where it was grown and used in China for medicinal purposes. It is thought that it made its way to America in the late 1700s and began growing in Maine and then spread into Massachusetts. Rhubarb looks a great deal like celery but is red in color and the leaves of the plant are quite toxic. So be careful if you plan on chewing on some raw rhubarb anytime soon! Rhubarb is an excellent source of vitamin C, which is important to help support a healthy immune system. It is high in dietary fiber which helps to

Marzipan, made of mainly almond meal and sugar or honey, is traditionally used in confections around Christmas, but lends a sweet counterbalance to the tart rhubarb in spring baking.

maintain regularity within the digestive system, and is a good source of calcium which is essential for strong bones and teeth. Rhubarb is low in sodium and saturated fat which makes it a very good food to help prevent heart related diseases. It is also high in vitamin K, which is thought to help prevent diabetes. Rhubarb is generally always cooked, however it has been eaten raw. It is not only used as a dessert; it also makes excellent sauces and jams. To get the best nutrition from rhubarb, it is suggested that it be baked or stewed for a long period of time. It can be cooked with apples and oranges sprinkled with cinnamon and ginger. Rhubarb can be used in a variety of ways from making pies to putting it on pizza.

Gather Ingredients

Sweet Lou says, “come hungry, stay late, eat well.”

• 1lb fresh rhubarb, trimmed • 1 large orange, finely grated rind and juice • 9 oz powdered sugar • 1¾ oz white marzipan, diced • 2 Tbsp heavy cream • 13 oz ready-rolled puff pastry • 1¾ oz shelled pistachio nuts, chopped • Dusting of icing sugar

6.

Preheat the oven to 230°F. Spread the rhubarb in a large roasting tin, sprinkle the orange rind, juice and sugar. Cover and bake for 1½ hours. Pour the juices into a saucepan and boil until thick and reduced by half. Set oven to 400°F. Mash the marzipan and cream together until smooth. Cut pastry into 8 squares. Place on a baking sheet and score a line ½ inch in from the sides, making sure you do not cut all the way through the pastry. Spread the marzipan mixture over the pastry, not covering the rim. Dust with sugar and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Cut the rhubarb into strips and arrange on the tarts. Scatter with pistachios and dust with icing sugar. Serve with the syrup.

CHAFE 150 AROUND THE CORNER Incredibly beautiful ride benefits local students on the autism spectrum By Colin Anderson IF YOU HAVEN’T GIVEN your bike its annual spring tune-up, now is the time because Sandpoint’s favorite ride is just a few short months away. Registration is open for the annual CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo bike ride, which is being held Saturday, June 18. In the previous two rides, the event, which is sponsored by Sandpoint Rotary, raised and donated more than $110,000 to the Lake Pend Oreille School District with the funds going to assist students with autism. There are three different levels again this year allowing riders of all abilities to participate. The CHAFE 150 begins at City Beach in Sandpoint and follows Highway 200 along the western shore of Lake Pend Oreille. Riders then cross into Montana on Highway 56, heading through Troy and eventually landing in Bonners Ferry before following Highway 95 back to Sandpoint. Those not feeling like they are able to complete a 150-mile course can opt for an 80mile ride in the ½ CHAFE. Riders will be bused to Troy, Mont. and will begin their ride heading south on Highway 56 until making their way to Highway 200 and back to Sandpoint. A third option is the 27-mile Piccolo Fondo which takes riders from City Beach out into the Selle Valley and back. Along each course, there are multiple stops where participants can get a drink or a bite to eat. There is also trained medical staff along the course as well as teams that can assist with any mid-ride breakdowns. The CHAFE 150 is a ride, not a race; however it is timed so those wanting to compete or set a personal goal will have an official clock to go off of. Currently 1 in 68 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with some form of autism. These children typically need different lesson plans, classroom settings and technology to thrive, and the donations gathered by the ride go directly to providing these needs for local students. Outside of the registration fee, riders agree to raise at least $50 in donations to participate, and the community continues to step up each year. If you haven’t pedaled a bike since grade school but would still like to help out, you can make a donation or offer to volunteer on race day. Information can be found at www. chafe150.org or by checking them out on Facebook.
