SERVING SANDPOINT FOR OVER 20 YEARS! That’s almost as long as
SEE YOU THERE!
PUBLISHER Make Memories That Last While it is still summer, for many this month signifies preparing our kids for the upcoming school year that is right around the corner. And for some, it will be a time when we take our child to college for the first time. There is a cartoon that has circulated around social media a great deal over the past couple of years — it shows a child leaving for kindergarten gripping onto his mother, obviously not wanting to leave her. The next frame shows a young adult enthusiastically leaving for college; but in this photo, it is the parents holding tightly onto the child. If you are a parent, you know all too well how fast time goes by. It slips through our fingers like a tiny grain of sand. Unable to stop it, we often long for those days when our children were younger. Giving our children roots and also the courage to move forward confidently in life is one of the best gifts we can offer our kids. In addition, there is the gift of memories. So whether you are a parent of toddlers, young teens or college-age students, I encourage you to get out and make the best memories you can. It is a gift that will last a lifetime.

AUGUST 8 CELEBRATE LIFE FUN RUN/WALK
48 Destination Weddings Realizing a dream of saying your wedding vows in a magical setting is something that may be more realistic than you may have previously thought. In this feature article by Melissa Murdock, she shares her story of her Hawaiian wedding, including the sentiment behind the chosen location, and offers tips of how you too can make your dream a reality. This story is a touching and heartwarming story of love, dreams and commitment.
The run or walk across the Long Bridge is a fun gathering of family and friends. Monies raised are distributed locally through Bonner General Hospital’s Outpatient Clinic, Hospice, Home Health and Kootenai Cancer Center at BGH. The run/walk starts at 9am while registration begins at 8am. Visit celebratelifefunrunwalk.org for more information.
AUGUST 15-22 RIDE IDAHO Ride Idaho is an annual, seven-day, fully supported, cycling tour. The tour is organized and administered by Ride Idaho, a nonprofit organization. See Northern Idaho like you’ve never seen it before! The event kicks off with a boat ride on Lake Coeur d’Alene and after the seven days, you’ll be back in Coeur d’Alene, having seen North Idaho by boat, road and trail. Check out www.rideidaho.org for more information and registration.
62 The Writing Life The journey to becoming a published author is often as interesting as the finished product. In this feature story by Jani Gonzalez, you will travel that journey with three published authors — including one who is as young as 17 years of age. From a woman who worked in the kitchen of jails for 21 years to a young mother who is dedicated to writing 1,000 words per day to achieve her goals, this story will have aspiring writers picking up their pens and recording their thoughts, perhaps starting on their own journey to becoming a published author.

Family Law: Living Together WHEN UNMARRIED COUPLES SEPARATE.
BY ATTORNEY RICHARD PATRICK.
Sometimes things don’t work out as planned in our personal relationships. When it is necessary to part from someone we have been in a serious relationship with and live separate lives, we usually are talking about divorce. However, these days, it is often the case that the parties were never married. When unmarried parties separate, dividing personal items and belongings is usually a simple matter. One party takes his or her things, and the other takes theirs. Sometimes the parties have acquired items during the relationship that belong to each other. In those cases, the parties will need to agree to divide the items they own together, or in some instances, sell the items and divide the cash. If the parties have purchased real estate together, they can continue to own it together or have one party buy the other out of their interest. In cases where parties have entered contracts or agreements as a pair, special care needs to be taken in how those contracts and agreements will be honored; for example, lease agreements with a property owner. If both parties are on the lease, the property owner still wants the rent and wants it from both parties. In those cases, you need to speak to your property owner and rewrite the lease for the person staying, or the parties need to enter into an additional written agreement between themselves that details who is responsible for the rent. In a perfect world, that additional agreement would be something

the parties entered into prior to signing a lease agreement together. You also see this situation with vehicle purchases. If parties have children together, it is necessary to have what is called a Residential Schedule drawn up and approved by the court. This document details who the children live with and who has residential time (also called visitation). It will also be necessary to establish child support. It has become common in our society for folks to live together and not be married. If the relationship ends, there are many of the same issues concerning children and the division of property that folks getting divorces face. If you live in a relationship with someone and are not married, take time to have open and frank discussions with your partner about what might happen if you split up. Put your ideas into a written document so if the relationship does end, you can minimize the surprises and difficulties of separation. Building or Remodeling? TIPS ON HOW TO HIRE A CONTRACTOR. BY PATTY HUTCHENS.
Consumers today spend quite a bit of time before making even the smallest purchases. They research the pros and cons of the latest cell phone model, they Google reviews on the newest restaurant in town, and they check consumer reports on new appliances. However, when it comes to one of the biggest financial investments, more often than not those in the industry do not see the same due diligence when hiring a contractor to build your home. In case you didn’t know, Bonner County does not have a Building Department (though Sandpoint does); no one is inspecting the quality of work, outside of electric, plumbing and HVAC, and no one is checking to see that the building is up to code. In fact, outside the city limits you aren’t even required to have your plans engineered, which is why it is so important to do your homework when choosing your contractor. This person is basically in charge of one of the biggest investments you will make in your life, so do your research, get informed and make the best choice.
Insurance
Here are some things you want to check out before hiring your contractor:
Remember, if they don’t have adequate workman’s comp or liability insurance and someone gets injured on the job, the homeowner could be sued for reparations.
Verify their License Go onto Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licenses’ website (www.ibol.idaho.gov) and look up the contractor’s registry number. Here, you can see if they are registered as well as if there is any history of disciplinary action against them.

The State of Idaho requires a bare minimum to get a license, $35 and proof of insurance, that there’s really no excuse for a contractor not to have one. Verify Insurance Coverage Ask your potential contractor for a copy of their insurance certificate; you are entitled to see proof before hiring them. Remember, if they don’t have adequate workman’s comp or liability insurance and someone gets injured on the job, the homeowner could be sued for reparations. Get a Good Contract Before signing a contract with a contractor, make sure that it contains all the terms of the agreement, and that you have read everything and understand it. Hire a lawyer to sit down with you if need be. A typical residential construction or home improvement contract should include the following: Date of Contract • General contractor’s full name, street address and telephone number • A complete description of the work to be done • The grade and quality of materials to be used • An agreed upon start and completion date • The cost of the total project • A payment schedule showing the amount and date of each payment

Make Sure They’re Financially Sound Ask for a financial report if you want, as the client you are entitled to this information. Also, don’t just ask friends and family who to use, get recommendations from local subcontractors and suppliers. Ask them who does the best work and who pays them on time; you want to make sure that they don’t need your money to pay someone else’s bills. After all, sometimes it’s the other players in the industry that know the inside scoop of the local contractors better than the general public.

Design Your Dream USE ONLINE RESOURCES AND SHOP LOCALLY. BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER.
Gutter cleaning
For people who have a hard time putting together their home interiors, I can see why they shop online. I can understand that it’s easiest to see furniture arrangements and know what works together. I had a client recently tell me that she purchased all of her furniture online. Sure enough, when I walked into her house, I could have picked out the catalog page number that matched her living room down to the candle holders on the sofa table. She was missing a couple of key components to finish out her house –her locally purchased mattress was on the floor, so at least she had a place to sleep, but the headboard was lost in transit somewhere and a replacement one would arrive in four to six weeks. Ordering furnishings and interior items is difficult — after all you are paying additional for the shipping and waiting the transit time for their “white glove delivery.” And if you don’t like it, good luck sending it back to the vendor.

I’m not knocking magazine or online shopping. I think it is great to look in magazines, look online, tag things on Houzz or Pinterest. They are all great resources to get ideas of what is out there. Use these resources to help you be a smarter shopper. A smart shopper who gets the best customer service, support from a company that stands behind their warranties, and best of all, the items you buy are guaranteed to make it to you in one piece and on time. out of your magazines, pin them to your board on Pinterest, take your own pictures, or jot down notes on what looks good to you. Start a file of those items. That way, you have an idea of what you want and can use that to convey to whomever you are purchasing from. Shopping local has its advantages when it comes to furniture and interior finishes. I have people come in all the time with a simple photo of a vanity or more complex folder of photos illustrating their dream kitchen. They may like the layout of a particular island in one picture, but also want the style of the base kitchen cabinets in another magazine photo. We will use those different styles together to create their own unique kitchen. The same rings true for furniture, tile layouts, rugs and most all interior finishes. Don’t be afraid to pull out your iPad, phone, or old-school folder with magazine tear-outs to give us an idea of what you like. Also shoot a few photos of the room where you want to put the furniture, the cabinets you are replacing, or the windows for which you need blinds. Take a few dimensions of the kitchen or bathroom you need cabinets in, the windows you want blinds for, and the area you’ll be buying furniture for. The more informative you can be, the more it helps us provide accurate renderings, information and pricing. You really do get the better end of the deal by shopping local because you will have the customer service and local support you deserve. (oh, and you are supporting your local economy!)

Managing Your Household OUTSOURCE YOUR WAY TO PEACE AND PRODUCTIVITY.
! y m A r o e i d Call Jo
BY SARAH FRIESEN.
Like many people, Annie and Sam work busy full-time jobs, leaving the house early in the morning to drop off young kids at daycare before heading to work. Struggling to solidify their career paths while also trying to fully enjoy parenthood, they often feel guilty, overwhelmed and simply tired. “I feel like time is literally slipping through my fingers; like I’m trying to hold a cup of sand in my hands,” confesses Annie. This year, they vowed to take a few simple steps in order to gain some sanity around the house. They took our advice on some easy steps: • Wake up earlier than the kids in order to have a peaceful, smooth start to your day. • Make your bed every morning so that your room feels manageable and presentable. • Plan ahead for meals using simple, quick ingredients and plan for only one shopping trip. • Do a 10-minute tidy every night so you can keep ahead of the clutter. But Annie and Sam knew they had to take it even further. Sam’s career was at a critical turning point, and working extra hours could result in a rewarding promotion down the road. Annie wasn’t sure she could handle her own job responsibilities and still care for the kids in the evenings, on top of keeping up with household tasks. Something had to give. Susan Athey, an economist at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, says “You have to start from a point where you say: What is necessary for me to be happy with my decision to be a working mother?” Athey believes, “A lot of working mothers end up throwing up their hands in exasperation saying, ‘I can’t live this way!’ and quit their jobs.”
“If parents who want to work abandon their careers before trying outsourcing, quitting may be shortsighted,” writes NY Times author Catherine Kampell. Even if you’re faster and more effective than everyone else at a given task you still might be better off paying someone else to do it for you. Why?
Let us “Inspect” your insurance policies for proper coverage.
Ask the experts and they’ll point out there is a huge opportunity cost for every hour spent on tedious household tasks. In most cases, there is a higher-value activity waiting for you instead. For some, outsourcing their home organization projects at a rate of $50/hour makes financial sense when they can use that time to earn $100/hour by going to work. In other situations, the organizing service might be more of a financial sacrifice, however in the long term it allows them to get the job promotion that increases their income potential for a lifetime. For household outsourcing to make sense, it must provide value that is higher than the cost of the service. For some families, the added value is simply time with their kids. Those items are the intangibles, and often what a family needs most in the middle of chaotic schedules. With increasing financial responsibilities, workloads and leisure activities, you might find that outsourcing home organization and household management is the perfect solution for your family too. Hyperthermia KEEPING YOUR FURRY FRIENDS SAFE FROM THE HEAT.
BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL.
This summer has been in full swing for several months. In fact, North Idahoans have suffered through tremendous temperature spikes; we have felt triple digit numbers on many afternoons. And we have already witnessed a handful of furry patients suffering from heat exhaustion. Everyone understands the stress of direct sunlight on a dog or cat. And most pet owners are very careful not to over exercise their pet (or themselves) in the middle of a summer day. But we cannot emphasize enough the threat of a closed space, even with ventilation, on a warm day. Hyperthermia may be life threatening and requires immediate treatment. A dog’s normal temperature ranges between 100 to 102 degrees; we consider anything higher than 104.5 degrees a true emergency. Here’s a fact that blew my mind: On a relatively cool (70 degree) day, a recent study from Stanford University Medical Center found the temperature within a vehicle may increase by an average of 40 degrees Fahrenheit within one hour, regardless of outside temperature. Bottom line: We can’t be too careful with our animal (and human) companions.
22
LIVINGLOCAL
There are other conditions that can affect your pet’s sensitivity to heat. Bulldogs and other short-faced canines have very different breathing anatomy — their tracheas (wind pipes) and airways are often reduced in diameter and become stressed easily by the heat. Panting alone can cause elevated body temperature. Obesity and diseases may predispose a pet to hyperthermia — prolonged seizures, poisoning and mild fever come to mind; these are not necessarily caused by the external temperature. Hyperthermia signs Symptoms include panting, restlessness, salivating and staggering. As hyperthermia progresses, the gums may look purple or blue tinged. Pets are often very distressed. Severe hyperthermia affects nearly every cell in the body. Organs that are too hot (like over 105 degrees) can actually become jello-like and literally melt down. Blood in the urine is a life threatening sign.
WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM AUGUST 2015
What to do Place your hot dog in a cool area, grab a fan and place it directly on him. Place moist wet towels around the groin, armpits and neck. You may also apply cool water to his earflaps and paws. This will help immediately drop the temperature at least one degree. Time permitting, try to obtain a rectal temperature. Then get your pet to the vet! As stated above, the inner organs are very susceptible to break down in this state, the pet may need more intensive care.
Emergency A dog’s normal temperature ranges between 100 to 102 degrees; we consider anything higher than 104.5 degrees a true emergency. What not to do Cooling pets too fast can actually shrink the peripheral (outside) blood vessels and insulate the body’s core and organs, keeping them hot! So, be sure to stay away from super cold water or ice. Try not to leave pets unattended. Don’t force him to drink — or do anything for that matter. Stress will increase body heat! To summarize (and repeat!): If busy people travelling with “Fluffy” need to pop into a store for a “quickie,” remember this: When in doubt, take Fluffy out of the car!

Convoy of Hope MASSIVE VOLUNTEER EFFORT IS UNDERWAY AND NEEDS YOUR HELP!
BY JANI GONZALEZ. PHOTOS COURTESY OF LAKE CITY COMMUNITY CHURCH.

Most of us, when we know of someone in need, want to help. But what if we took that desire to serve and collaborated with about 900 others who felt the same way? That’s exactly what Convoy of Hope is trying to accomplish here in Sandpoint for a one-day event. In preparation for it, they are holding a Volunteer Rally October 2. Convoy of Hope is a first responder to natural disasters worldwide. They also run a meal program for children, women’s groups and agricultural assistance to farmers in developing countries. But their goal in Sandpoint this year is to have a day without poverty. The day is one of a myriad of events nationwide that offers free groceries, haircuts, shoes, health and dental screenings,

hot meals, job assistance and family portraits – just to name a few of the things that will be available that day in a free, fun, fair-like atmosphere. Convoy of Hope held an event in Coeur d’Alene last year with an overwhelming response. This year, there will be events in both Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene. Eric Rust, pastor at Cedar Hills Church in Sandpoint, has ties with the Convoy of Hope’s founders since they were young. Rust had a table at the Coeur d’Alene event last year and felt there was a big enough need to have one in Sandpoint. “I wondered, ‘What if we (the church) partnered with Convoy of Hope?’ My

heart was stirred to do this,” Rust said. “There is great economic diversity here and a number of families where day to day living is a challenge.” Rust contacted other local pastors, and they started pooling funds together for the event. Next, Vicki and Dale Jeffres were appointed as event coordinators and have been helping to plan since last year. To date, they have between 10 to 12 partner churches in addition to about 22 businesses, social services and other organizations to make this day happen. “We have a pretty big population that’s at or below poverty level that just needs those services, but anyone can go,” Vicki Jeffres said in regards to who can attend the event. The Convoy of Hope in Sandpoint also emerged after the overwhelming response that the Coeur d’Alene event had last year. “We’re planning for 6,000 people to attend this year’s event, and for that we need around 900 volunteers,” Vicki Jeffres said. The day in Sandpoint aims to unite all of the services that people who are experiencing difficult or impoverished circumstances may need.
“The biggest impact that we’ll probably have is that in working between the teams, we’re creating community. We’re all working together, and by the end of the day, we’ll know so many more people to help,” Vicki Jeffres said. Toni Norton of Lake City Community Church in Coeur d’Alene volunteered at the Coeur d’Alene event last year. She helped play with young children while their parents received prayer services from a local church. “It was fun playing with the kids while their parents got assistance. It’s not hard (to volunteer), you’re placed where you’re comfortable,” Norton said. “I had my 16-yearold daughter with me and that made it special for me to do this with her. Both my kids and I loved it.” There is a volunteer opportunity for any imaginable activity from distributing complimentary groceries and shoes to gardening and family portraits.
“One of our hopes is to network together and start long-term relationships and think outside of our silos,” Rust said. Vicki Jeffres echoed his goal: “Working together as a community is a real benefit to our city and to everyone. We’re going to have a good time.” Anyone interested in volunteering, donating or sponsoring can go to the Convoy of Hope Sandpoint website, www.convoyofhope.org/ sandpoint, visit Sandpoint Convoy of Hope on Facebook, and come to the Volunteer Rally on Friday, October 2 at 7pm at the First Christian Church at 201 North Division Street. The Convoy of Hope in Sandpoint event will take place Saturday, October 3 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds in Sandpoint. It will begin at 10am and end when volunteers run out of supplies to distribute.
The event will also help those agencies boost their outreach beyond the event to continue providing services for individuals who need them.
“It’s not hard (to volunteer), you’re placed where you’re comfortable.”

PAINT, BUFF, WAX, LOVE Be Junk Chic finds a new home in downtown Sandpoint. By Jessica Herbig. Photos courtesy Lisa Turner and Be Junk Chic. Be Junk Chic is figuratively the stuff dreams are made of. The idea of a selfleveling chalk-based paint came to Trish Small one day while she was spending her days in a high-end interior design firm in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. A paint that was literally a dream to work with. She spent her evenings and weekends perfecting her paint recipe, refinishing furniture pieces and testing them out in her own interior spaces and weekend indie markets in the southern California area. She tweaked the recipe and finally hit on what she needed. Easy to apply, easy to distress, easy on the eyes, with the superpower ability to take your breath away. Her color palette was refined and Be Junk Chic was born. Sandpoint was calling her name, in the quiet way it does as you drive over the Long Bridge at sunset. It wasn’t a question of whether she would move home, but when she would move home and where she would locate her business. Trish, her husband Eugene, and three beautiful children pulled back into Sandpoint and the rest is history. Their first storefront was upstairs in Zany Zebra, but Sandpoint showed them some love downtown, and they quickly felt the need to expand. Trish found Carolyn Jordan, and the two quickly realized their amazing
28
superpowers together and teamed up as coowners. Their grand opening took place at 118 N. Second Avenue this spring and they haven’t looked back! The new space has retail space, furniture restoration, a paint bar featuring 32 custom colors aligning with the seasons style trends mixed on site, curated finds, and the niche market of custom cabinet refinishing, featuring the Be Junk Chic paint line. Paint and wax can be purchased online at their website, www.bejunkchic.com, and if you come into the store, make sure you sign up for their email list for a periodic mailer with special coupons for Be Junk Chic enthusiasts. Trish and Carolyn are both invested in the community of Sandpoint. They regularly volunteer to help with Jacey’s Race and Festival of Trees, as well as teaching sewing and life skills to school age children. They spend a lot of their free time volunteering at their children’s schools and throwing paint parties for fundraisers for various causes. By putting family and faith in the forefront, their business has followed suit and is thriving in downtown Sandpoint. A new business venture doesn’t get off the ground without a lot of hard work and hustle, something this dynamic duo knows all about. It was a team effort to renovate the Second Avenue space to fit their brand and business model, involving both family and
LIVINGLOCAL
friends, in the way that Sandpoint is famous for. Today the space is bright and inviting, featuring the colors of their paint line on the furniture as well as in the curated art and pieces they have for sale. They feature local artisans such as Salty Bison, Buffalo Girls, Hello Sunshine Shoppe and many more. The clean lines in their styling give a breath of fresh air to the downtown corridor. Their focus on design, curated finds and refinishing lends room for the imagination to soar and the sky is literally the limit. If you’re looking for a custom piece, come in and get a quote, they will scour the area for the perfect piece, and if they can’t find it, they use local artisans to build it for you, delivering it into your hands with your choice of paint and wax finishes. Visit them today in downtown Sandpoint and see why Be Junk Chic is making a name for itself in Sandpoint and beyond.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Local firm provides personalized service to help you reach your goals. By Patty Hutchens. After putting in decades of work, we look forward to the chapter in our lives when we can enjoy more time doing that which we enjoy most. But for many it can be overwhelming to navigate the world of financial planning to ensure that we can retire comfortably. That is where Ken Wood can help. Wood is a financial advisor with Edward Jones. With over eight years of experience in the financial field, he joined the firm in October of last year, taking over for the retiring Rob Kincaid. Although he has been employed at different financial institutions, Wood said financial planning has always been the career he enjoys most. “I really enjoy working with people and having the opportunity to take a complex topic and simplify it for my clients,” said Wood. “It’s very rewarding helping people accomplish their financial goals.” Wood explains that Edward Jones is a full service financial planning firm that offers numerous investments and services. “This includes smart spending and borrowing options, retirement planning, paying for education, estate considerations and asset protection,” said Wood. One of the things that attracted Wood to Edward Jones is the investment firm’s philosophy behind the services it provides. “To us, face time and think time make sense,”
said Wood. “We spend a tremendous amount of time learning about the individual’s needs, which is then used to develop a customized strategy to achieve their specific long-term financial goals.” In mid-September Wood and his Branch Office Administrator, Tammy Bradshaw, will move to a new location in Ponderay, located two doors down from the Starbucks at the corner of Highway 95 and Schweitzer Cut-off Road. Wood said that with the growth of Ponderay it made perfect sense for him to make the move to that area of town, a place where he also lives. “This is an excellent opportunity to expand our services and reach an underserved market,” said Wood, pointing out that Ponderay draws people from all over North Idaho and Northwest Montana. Wood’s wife, Katie, is a native of Sandpoint, and the two moved here six years ago, knowing it was a place they wanted to raise a family. They have two boys, ages 2 and 3, who keep their life busy. Yet, even with work and family, Wood jumped right in and quickly integrated himself into the Sandpoint community volunteering his time and talent to many causes. He serves on the family selection committee and is a past board member for Idaho Panhandle Habitat for Humanity. He volunteers and has coordinated various projects for local nonprofits including Kinderhaven, Blue Haven Transitional Housing and Love, Inc. Since May

2011, he has been involved in the Sandpoint Rotary Club, and this October he will begin his term as Chairman of the Board for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. Wood is grateful to his predecessor Rob Kincaid who built the practice over the last 17 years. “It is humbling to me that Rob has placed his trust in me to take over a portion of his practice,” said Wood. Wood takes a personalized approach with all of his clients, realizing that each person has their own unique stories and needs. He takes the time to uncover each person’s financial needs before recommending investment strategies. “Personally, I take great pride and care in helping each of my clients feel comfortable with their investment decisions and in helping them to understand how each decision helps them reach their long-term financial goals.” On October 29, Wood and Caleb Bowman will be hosting a seminar on Social Security at the Holiday Inn Express. DayBreak Adult day care center offers respite care for dementia patients and caregivers. By Jani Gonzalez. Photos courtesy of Lisa Turner.
More people are living longer than ever before, but with longevity the chances of acquiring dementia and Alzheimer’s disease increases. And with a larger population of people older than 65 years, more individuals will need care for dementia and Alzheimer’s. But it is services such as the DayBreak Center that are responding to those increasing needs of both the individuals with these conditions and their primary caregivers through respite care. “Really, we’re providing services for the person who comes here and also for the family with respite care,” said Liz Stoddart, director of the center, which is a program of Sandpoint Area Seniors. The job of a caregiver can be demanding, and respite care gives the caregiver time to care for themselves and their health and know that their loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s is being treated well. Stoddart is trying to get the word out to local doctors about offering the center’s adult day care services. There is a misconception that individuals with dementia won’t adapt or might dislike the care. “Sometimes, there is a barrier that people think they wouldn’t like it, but it’s not like a nursing facility. There’s camaraderie and an open
30
atmosphere here,” she said. In addition to the adult day care services, DayBreak provides care for loved ones while their caregivers attend support groups run by the Alzheimer’s Association. “We have a lot of resources and things to point them (caregivers) in the right direction and help them navigate care,” she said. Clients come to the center in the morning to a double-wide house on the premises of Sandpoint Area Seniors. Everything DayBreak does, starting with the house, is tailored to an adult with dementia. Individuals with dementia may be easily confused with change or by unfamiliar surroundings, but by keeping a cozy, home-like atmosphere, clients feel like they’re visiting a friend. “When they come in, there’s coffee and snacks, then we have activities for them,” Stoddart said.
Another activity has clients finishing a phrase that they pull out of a hat. The goal of the activities is to keep the brain active. Studies have shown that increasing brain activity may delay the loss of cognitive function. “We try to keep it fun and light. There’s a lot of data that if people keep active, they won’t decline as quickly,” she said. Music is a large part of the care as well because many clients remember old songs from their youth even if they have difficulty speaking. Other activities include gardening, games and puzzles. Staff is trained to understand the needs and actions by individuals with dementia, so aggressiveness, which sometimes is a side effect of the condition, is not a problem.
Activities are planned according to the individual, but much of them revolve around reminiscing.
“We’ve had very few issues with aggressiveness. I think it’s because the way we react and are trained to know why people are acting that way. If you understand why it’s happening, I think we eliminate that and haven’t had those issues,” Stoddart said.
“We reminisce – we find out about a person’s history and give them an opportunity to share about their past. We have as much information as possible so we can interact that way,” Stoddart said.
The DayBreak Center first opened in downtown Sandpoint in August of 2008. Since that time they have been making a difference in the lives of families in and around North Idaho. The founders knew that

while families provide the day-to-day care of the patients, they do not always have time to devote to activities that help stimulate the client’s cognitive functioning. That is where the DayBreak Center has played a crucial role. DayBreak currently serves nine families but is working to expand their hours of operations and the number of clients. Currently, the center is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but Stoddart would like to be open five days a week. The center is sponsored by Sandpoint Area Seniors, Inc., and clients come from Bonners Ferry, Priest River and Clark Fork. Families must pay for services, but there are scholarships available and other options to help supplement the costs of care. Stoddart adds that she is always looking for ways to fund the program. “I think that there are a lot of people who don’t know about our adult day care services. When they do hear about us, they say that they wish they had learned about it sooner. It’s really helpful to families,” she said. The first step is to contact DayBreak to see how they can help you and your loved one or provide other helpful resources about dementia and Alzheimer’s care. The prospective client is assessed, and Stoddart and staff determine whether he or she is a good fit for the program.

There’s a lot of data that if people keep active, they won’t decline as quickly. “I want to offer services to those who need it, and so far, we haven’t had to turn anyone away. There’s a lot that we can do. We can accommodate most people’s schedules, and it does help to have a set schedule. The more they’re (clients) here, the more comfortable they become – and that’s a good thing,” she said. For more information, go to www.daybreakhouse.org.

IN FOCU S BACK TO SCHOOL WITH THE ANGELS What will your legacy be? By Teresa Pesce. Kathy Pelland was kind, caring and helpful. Not a glimpse of “glitz” in her actions; nothing to inspire headlines. And yet, at her memorial service, Kathy inspired remembrances. The recollections shared a common theme: “Kathy helped me when…” Story after story described how she was a good friend regardless of time or circumstance, always lifted spirits, and never let anyone down. Too busy helping people to think of building a legacy, Kathy created one that is vitally alive today in Angels Over Sandpoint. A group of her friends agreed to unite and carry on in her generous spirit, and from those first few, membership is now over 70 individuals. Focused on sponsoring programs to give back to the citizens of Bonner County, this all-volunteer force for good has put over $1 million back into the community since 1997. With summer vacation waving a wistful goodbye, Bonner County children are once again anticipating the Angels’ annual Back to School program. Founded to assist limited income school children to be ready to flourish in the classroom, the program provides backpacks and school supplies and shoes for hundreds of Bonner County students each August. It began as so many Angel programs begin, with a practical and generous response to a community need. In 2001, Shirley Paulison, the Director of Community Action Partnership, noticed that some of the children in the program couldn’t afford school supplies for the new year. She shared her concern with Ree Clark and Kathy Andruzak, who promptly agreed to help Shirley pull together the necessary items. They approached John Porter of Sandpoint Super Drug for help, and he kindly provided the items at a sizable discount. Thirty-five children received free school supplies that year. Since then, the Back to School Program has doubled every year, and at one point, approximately 1,000 children were involved. Coldwater Creek contributed matching funds for many years to help get the program off the ground. Staples and WalMart are highly instrumental in sustaining the program. “As Staples gets in supplies they know we’ll need, and when the supplies are on sale, they stockpile pallets of them for us all year,” Andruzak explains. “And WalMart supplies backpacks at deep discounts.” Five years into the program, they began to hear from teachers that in winter months children were arriving at school with their sneakers soaked through from walking in the snow. “We started working with Payless Shoe Store,” recalls Andruzak. “We gave shoe cards to the teachers and counselors in Bonner County, and they gave the child a card to get snow boots at Payless.” Typical of an Angels’ project, it expanded to include shoe vouchers for gym class sneakers – another need noticed and taken care of. The program starts each year with the simplest of fundraisers: a grassroots letter-writing campaign to friends and businesses. “We once raised up to $30,000 that way!” says Andruzak. “People actually have this event on their budget calendar and continue to support us year after year. And there are so many small donations that mean so much, too” she adds. “Sometimes a child will send us five dollars or stop by to bring a dollar or two and say thank you.”

After the community-wide donations are in place, as many as 30 volunteers move into energetic action. Having outgrown their original meeting place at the Community Action Partnership, the group now occupies the gym at Farmin Stidwell School to assemble and distribute the supplies and backpacks. “We had bags on top of bags and boxes in every square inch available at the Partnership, and had to ask their neighbor if we could use their garage,” recalls Andruzak. “When it got to a participation level of 600 to 800 kids, we asked the FarminStidwell principal if we could use their gym and she said yes!” With energy born of enthusiastic commitment, and enough strategic coordination to take over a small country if need be, the volunteers mobilize on a Monday to gather in what seems like acres of boxes containing the necessary school supplies. Undaunted, they then organize assembly-line style to empty the boxes and line up the supplies to place in bags. Tuesday, volunteers serve in shifts to systematically fill the supply bags. “In the beginning,” Andruzak recalls, “we would get a list of required school supplies from each teacher, but it became mind-boggling to keep up with it.” Working with teachers and schools, they arrived at a district-wide uniform set of supplies for each grade level from kindergarten through 12th grade. The bags are filled and grouped accordingly. Thursday, more volunteers participate in the beehive of activity when students and their families arrive at the gym to see lines of grade-
specific supply bags and a forest of backpacks set up according to age and size. The kids get to shop and pick their own backpack and arrange their new supplies inside it any way they like. The largest amount of bags they ever prepared was 1,100.
The economy may fluctuate, but Bonner County children can trust that the Angels’ commitment to them will not.
From their first group of 35 recipients, the Back to School Program now provides close to 900 students with supplies. Each year, the need to help limited income children increases and the Angels are deeply grateful to the patrons of their community who continue to ensure students will begin the school year with the supplies they need to succeed. Before the Back to School Program, it was often a non-choice between buying food for the family and buying school supplies. The cost per child for school supplies is $100, and for high school students, can be as high as $200. With the Back to School Program, parents don’t have to face that choice.
To apply to receive school supplies for your child/children, please contact Community Action Partnership at 255-2910 in early August.
Perhaps all good things don’t have to come to an end, after all.
Donations in any amount are welcome yearround. Make your check payable to “Back to School Program” so the funds will go directly to a dedicated fund, and mail it to Angels Over Sandpoint, PO Box 2369, Sandpoint, ID 83864. Donations are also accepted through PayPal at www.angelsoversandpoint.org/about-us/ fundraising/.
Andruzak now enjoys her work as a volunteer, rather than an organizer. “Other wonderful people have stepped up and are carrying on with the year-round responsibilities of working with providers, following up with families, and fundraising,” she explains. “It amazes me that after all these years – 15 years we’ve been doing this – it’s still going,” says Andruzak. “The upside is that the economy is getting a little better. One of the best moments is when we follow up with a family who skips the program one year, and we’re told they are doing better now and can buy their supplies.”

SATELLITE, INTERNET AND MORE Get your services locally. By Patty Hutchens. Lenny Hess — it’s a name that is synonymous with the satellite industry in Sandpoint. While Hess has owned and operated 7BTV for the last five years, his work in the industry began in 1982. “Hesstronics started in 1997 and incorporated in 2000. I started Sandpoint Satellite in 2001 and later sold it in 2008. From there I started 7BTV in 2010,” said Hess. In addition to selling both Dish and DIRECTV satellite services, 7BTV also sells high-speed Internet through several different providers including DishNet, HughesNet and Exede satellite. They also sell home theater and audio and control systems for your entire home. And if there is a problem, no worries. “We install and service everything we sell, plus we service existing systems if there is a need,” said Hess, who employs Adam Bates, who has over eight years of experience, as the lead installer. “And we are currently taking applications for installers and sales persons,” adds Hess. Anyone who has ever dealt with calling their satellite provider knows how frustrating it can be to sit on hold and wait to be transferred to the appropriate person to address your concerns. But with 7BTV you have a local company right here at home. And you are not paying more for that service either. They offer all the same great promotions you see advertised on television, the Internet or by mail.
“By getting the service through us, you get a local company that is accountable to you because we care about you,” said Hess adding that companies based elsewhere do not always have an interest in what happens to their customers after the sale. And by using a local company, there is the added benefit of helping your local economy as well. “The money that Dish pays us to acquire new customers is staying right here in the community; whereas if you buy from another dealer or directly from Dish or DIRECTV, there is nothing contributed to the local economy,” said Hess. “We love selling and installing satellite TV and are dedicated to providing the utmost in friendly, professional service.” Hess first arrived in Sandpoint as a child in 1960. He moved to California in 1978 but returned to Sandpoint in 1984. After working at Karli’s for a time, he worked with Satcom Systems installing commercial satellite systems all over the country. Hess attributes much of his success to his customers, and he is grateful. “They recognize the value in getting their TV and Internet services from a local company that has established roots right here in Sandpoint,” said Hess who cautions against door-to-door salespeople who sell the same product and some of whom represent themselves as being with 7BTV. “Do not be fooled. These people
LIVINGLOCAL

have no relationship with us other than that they sell the same services.” It is important to Hess to give back to the community that has supported him over the years. He shares that 7BTV is a proud sponsor of the Festival at Sandpoint and has contributed to the Panida Theater in the past. In addition, 7BTV supports many of the local school programs and youth sports. 7BTV is a member of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce as well as the local Better Business Bureau, the Sandpoint Elks Lodge #1376 and the Selkirk Association of Realtors. Hess also belongs to many industry associations such as the Consumer Electronics Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) and the Satellite Broadcasters and Communications Association (SBCA), both of which provide continuing education that helps them stay well-informed of the latest changes in the field. It’s been an unseasonably warm and dry summer across the northwest, and getting in 18 holes of golf is a difficult affair. Morning tee times are swooped up fast as everyone tries to avoid getting stuck on the course as the temperatures soar into the 90s. If you haven’t had the opportunity to play as much this year, there are still a few things you can do to improve your game and have more fun on the golf course.
“Seek out a pro that really cares about making you better, and take advantage of all our pros’ local knowledge.”
“We’re really spoiled here as there are a ton of great pros in the area that can educate you on your swing and take a look at your equipment,” said Randall Henry, General Manager of
LIVINGLOCAL
Henry-Griffits Custom Clubs in Coeur d’Alene. The less frequent we play, the more we tend to develop bad habits. Local golf pros are able to identify those bad habits and get them corrected to help you play better. It also might be time to really have your equipment analyzed. “People tend to wait to get custom fit clubs, and really it’s the opposite,” said Henry. “If your clubs don’t fit you right from the start, you develop poor habits and swing mechanics.” Henry-Griffits is a pioneer in the custom clubfitting industry and has been fitting weekend warriors and professionals for more than 30 years. Many custom clubs on the market are only customized to someone’s height; whereas Henry-Griffits analyzes many factors including height, swing speed, flexibility in the shaft, loft angle and more. With properly fit clubs, golfers tend to hit the ball further and, more importantly, straighter. Custom fit clubs are an investment and will typically cost more than a set off the sporting goods floor. “I always tell people they are probably better off with a few clubs that fit you right than a full set that isn’t fit right for you,” said Henry. “Golf is about having fun and unfortunately bad equipment can have a major negative impact on your game.”
WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM AUGUST 2015
Even if you’re not in the market for a set of custom clubs, Henry-Griffits can handle repairs, re-gripping, replacement shafts and more on just about every brand out there. The company has recently relocated to a new Sherman Avenue location right next to Moontime restaurant east of downtown Coeur d’Alene. Improving your game might be as simple as analyzing or repairing your current clubs. Golf is a game that no one will ever conquer, but with a little instruction and the proper equipment you will see an improvement in your game at any level. “Seek out a pro that really cares about making you better, and take advantage of all our pros’ local knowledge,” said Henry.

A FESTIVAL
OF FUN
Music and magic on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. By Teresa Pesce. Photos by Jamie Sedlmayer.
By the vast cool waters of Lake Pend Oreille beneath starry evening skies, musical magic comes to Sandpoint every August and has done so since 1983. It’s the Festival at Sandpoint — a family tradition, a famous annual occasion, a musical pilgrimage for annual attendees and an honor welcomed by musicians of phenomenal fame. As big as the heart of the town that hosts it, the Festival began as a vision of local volunteers to introduce symphonic music to the area and provide the community with an economic boost. Accordingly, the premiere season featured three concerts with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. Since then, the Festival has flourished beyond all imagined horizons and is now a two-week sold-out series of concerts in an eclectic range of jazz, blues, country, folk, world, rock and pop. And yet, true to the root of its original intention, the Festival always culminates with a grand finale by the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. Sandpoint resident and musician Dave Gunter thoroughly enjoys all that the Festival has to offer. And he has been on both sides of the event as performer and spectator. “The Festival at Sandpoint is like your cool uncle who used to come to town for a couple weeks in the summer — full of surprises and fun to be around. I have watched it grow from the first year to present day. Watched as it hit hard times and then came back stronger and better than ever,” said Gunter. “I’ve been lucky to have been on the stage, in the audience and on the board of the Festival. Each aspect was

a reminder of what a rare gem we have in this sublime little summer concert series.” With people traveling great distances to see the performances, the Festival is a huge economic boost to not only the businesses in Sandpoint but the non-profits as well. “I’ve worked in the Panida Theater ice cream booth for six Festivals – it’s the main Panida fundraiser. And sometimes even when it’s hectic and lots of people are lined up to order, a certain song will come on and suddenly everyone just stands still and listens. It’s magic,” local Ron Ragone said. Kate McAlister said she is fortunate to enjoy each and every night of the Festival and looks forward to it each year. “I’m one of the lucky ones who live near the Festival! I not only get to go to it, I get to enjoy it on the other nights too. We love sitting outside on our deck and listening to the music drifting toward us. It’s wonderful!” McAlister said.
fulfillment of the Festival’s original mission: “to make exceptional musicians and great performances accessible to the community and the surrounding region.” This 33rd annual summer concert series, August 6 through 16, showcases eight nights of classic favorites and progressive artists with headliners Arlo Guthrie, Ziggy Marley, Vince Gill, Lake Street Dive, Trampled By Turtles, The Devil Makes Three and Wilco, as well as supporting stars and local favorites, including Jonatha Brooke, Maw Band, The Barefoot Movement, Troy Bullock, The Ballroom Thieves, Vetiver and Owen & McCoy.
information. The Festival line policy is designed to reward attendees for being early while leaving them free to enjoy a summer day in town. Seating is “festival style” meaning, blankets and lawn chairs. This means the earlier you arrive, the more choices you’ll have to get your preferred viewing spot. Some concert-goers arrive as early as 5am to get in line for the front of the stage! Festival organizers begin handing out numbers around 8am and at intervals throughout the day to about 300 people. With each number, a person is allowed to receive a place in line for a party of four. Spaces are limited by an 8- by 8-foot blanket or chair set up. Only low chairs are permitted in the blanket area. Other lawn chairs are permitted behind the blanket area. After the people with numbers are admitted, general admission begins. In other words – prepare for a line. Smoking is not permitted in the field. Concessions are available for purchase, and patrons are permitted to bring food and drink as well. Memorial Field is accessible for individuals with disabilities.
“The Festival at Sandpoint is like your cool uncle who used to come to town for a couple weeks in the summer — full of surprises and fun to be around.”
Each season’s talent line-up is enough to widen the eyes of any music-lover, and the tickets begin to take wing far in advance of the event. Held in the open air and covered only by stars, the intimate setting is the emotional cornerstone of the Festival’s success. Although there is abundant seating, listeners gathered on blankets beneath a darkening sky are a hallmark of the event. Enthusiastic crowds are a vibrant

DID YOU KNOW? Nearly one in four weddings are destination weddings. 70 Percent of destination weddings take place within the United States. The top five destination wedding locations are: 1. Las Vegas - 125,000 per year 2. Hawaii - 20,000 per year 3. U.S. Virgin Islands - 5,100 per year 4. Jamaica - 5,000 per year 5. Bahamas - 4,000 per year Annually, $16 billion is spent on destination weddings. 60 Percent of couples doing destination weddings will pay for the wedding themselves. On average, 48 guests will attend a destination wedding. It will cost, on average, $673 to attend a destination wedding as a guest.

etting married on the tropical beaches of Maui always seemed like a dream, but nothing more. Even before I had visited the island, I knew it was where I wanted to get married regardless of how unrealistic I thought it was. It wasn’t until my feet touched the warm salt water and the softest sand pressed between my toes that I realized it was actually happening − a dream come true! Getting married in a tropical atmosphere has the ability to be far more personal and meaningful to the couple. These days, the wedding chaos can pull the couple away from the true significance of their marriage and it turns into a fiasco. Thousands of dollars are spent for a single day, and it can easily get overwhelming. Having the peace and serenity of a small beach wedding is everything a bride could ask for and more.
90 Percent of couples choose to do a destination wedding because of weather.
There are tropical places all over the world that have become famous for romantic beach weddings. Although there are people who travel to far off places, including New Zealand and Europe, there are tropical places that are becoming increasingly popular and not out of the way for traveling accommodations. Here are some of the most popular (and reasonable) destination wedding locations of 2015. Hawaii - There are several islands to choose from, but three stand out the most: Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. With the weather only changing about 10 degrees all year long, there are options to have an outdoor wedding summer, fall, winter and spring. Another benefit of Hawaii is that you get the tropical feel without having to travel out of the country. If you intend on inviting guests to the destination wedding, you’ll likely have a larger list than traveling outside of the United States. Maui, the romantic island, is excellent for the close-knit and romantic feel wanted

in weddings. Kauai, the garden island, offers its tropical greens to surround your ceremony with little city to distract. The Big Island offers some of the most unique lava rock beaches and has a great balance of city and island retreat vibe. The Bahamas - The Bahamas is a collection of over 700 islands and offers a variety of options for destination weddings. With the huge collection of islands, the newlyweds can even rent their own private island for the perfect honeymoon. There are specific islands for every taste: Some are more lively filled with nightlife, and others more serene and peaceful. Regardless of what you want, the Bahamas can offer it. If you are looking into the Bahamas, check out some of the specific options each island has to offer first before booking. Once you pick what kind of ceremony you want, then you can find the island of best fit. One of the best parts is that the plane ride from Florida is just over a half-hour. Skip the fiveto six-hour plane ride to Hawaii and opt for a shorter overseas plane ride. For a less crowded time of year without the risk of a hurricane, visit during April or May. The Florida Keys - If you are in search of the Caribbean feel at a more affordable price, the Florida Keys are the perfect chain of islands for you. There is an old-Florida feel about the islands with nature, white beaches and blue water all around you. Some of the popular options available in the Keys include getting married aboard a boat of your choosing,
sharing your vows with some local dolphins, or even getting married underwater. Each Key has something different to offer in wedding options. The best time to travel and hold your wedding here is also April or May. Los Cabos, Mexico - In a beautiful paradise filled with white sandy beaches, who wouldn’t want to get married here? Cabo San Lucas is part of this area and offers a bit of lively nature to the relaxing beach wedding. It makes for an awesome after-party or wedding celebration to continue into the night. There are private boat rides for the couple to visit where they can share their vows or they can enter the wedding on horses. If that is not enough, in the right season, the releasing of baby sea turtles into the ocean can be incorporated into your ceremony. Los Cabos offers some of the most unique options for weddings. If you are looking to do something new and innovative, check out the Los Cabos area. The best time to get married here is mid-December though the end of March. Why have a destination wedding? Destination weddings are becoming more popular and with them comes added convenience. Planning destination weddings have become simpler and easier than planning most standard weddings. Coming from a bride who is doing both a destination and a domestic wedding, I can tell you the destination wedding is a complete breeze. Another added bonus is not having to plan the extra expense for a honeymoon. Say goodbye to all your family

and friends after the wedding, and relax at the same place for the next week in paradise. By sharing the start of your marriage on a tropical island, you are making a special place for you and your spouse. Having a special destination offers great opportunities for anniversaries to come. Celebrating your 10th, 25th or even 50th wedding anniversaries become personalized and special since you can revisit your wedding beach in paradise. Planning tips 1. Go with a wedding package. Yes, it is easy to do a do-it-yourself wedding when you have everything at your fingertips, but doing this from overseas is not going to be easy. There are packages for every budget− you just need to do your research. I was able to find packages on the island of Maui for under $200, and this was inclusive of the basics you would need: minister,

If you are looking for packages for larger parties inclusive of cakes, seating, videography and hundreds of photos, they are easily available as well. Set a baseline of what you need at your ceremony, and call your planner to find out what is possible. 2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. These companies do this for a living and understand that you have never been through this before. The wedding planner I used was also my minister, and he was able to adapt the ceremony to my needs. 3. Know that you cannot be overly in control. Yes, your wedding day will be magical and absolutely perfect, but you need to know your limitations. Since you are planning from afar, your planner will be able to

tell you what is best, and what is not going to work. Trust your planner. He or she is an expert, and if you listen to their suggestions, you will be overjoyed with the convenience and flawlessness of your planner’s recommendations. Keeping things affordable Getting married in paradise is surprisingly affordable. When you are not worried about feeding and catering for hundreds of people, the stress dissipates. Know your budget ahead of time and stick to it. I was able to remove pieces off my package, and take care of them on my own after I arrived at the island. Yes,

Personalize it to your taste and communicate with your planner to ensure you are getting what you need and nothing more. Recognizing guests who cannot attend My husband and I decided to get married on the island of Maui for sentimental reasons, and we are not alone. Many couples have cherished memories at these tropical islands or even have met in that same beach spot. Regardless of why, it is important to cherish the couple’s wishes and signify this in a wedding ceremony. For us, we got married in Maui because of my dad. Three years ago, my dad and I made a promise that we were going to go to Hawaii for the first time. The entire family had never been, and it was about time for a family vacation. Weeks later, I lost my dad suddenly. Living up to my end of the promise, a few months later, we took his ashes to the island of Maui so he could rest in paradise forever. My husband and I decided to make our dreams a reality and get married on the island so that my father could still give me away on my wedding day. Weddings are important landmarks in the years to come with a promise of forever. Not always is there a loss in family members, but sometimes the inconvenience of travel won’t allow for everyone to make it. If this is the case, don’t completely rule out a destination wedding. There are many options for overcoming this and ways to recognize family who can’t make it. Webcams can bring family
Destination weddings are not unrealistic! Don’t be afraid to do some research, and check out your options. A lot of couples I have spoken to assume that it isn’t possible and give up on the idea of getting married in paradise. Don’t let this be a factor in your decision. Especially with the increase in couples tackling wedding planning and funding on their own, it is important that you are paying for something you can be proud of. Take a chance, and you can have the wedding of your dreams as truly an island princess. With the affordability, convenience and luxury of a wedding in paradise, throw away the fear, and say “I do” to your dream destination wedding.

together from all over the world. Bring your laptop, and you can easily set up streaming video from your ceremony to those at home so that they can share the day with you. Also, depending on the location, there are options to honor them being there in spirit. You can print canvas photos of missing members, and have a picture of them there at the ceremony. You can also take some island influence to recognize them. Since Hawaii is one of the most popular places, you can use leis and have them placed on the beach around the photos, or lay them out in place of where they would stand for the ceremony. Each different wedding destination will have a unique influence that can be incorporated into the ceremony. When planning your wedding, check with your planner or minister about ideas to fill in the gaps.

BY PATTY HUTCHENS. PHOTO COURTESY PEND OREILLE ARTS COUNCIL. Mark your calendars for the 43rd Annual Arts and Crafts Fair at Sandpoint’s City Beach. Taking place on August 8 and 9, the event draws people from great distances to enjoy an incredible display of artists’ booths, food vendors, live entertainment and a youth art arena where young people can put their creativity to work. Here you will find a wide array of art including sculpture, ceramics, metal, fiber, photography, paintings, mixed media, wood crafts and much more. With over 5,000 people in attendance last year, it is the place to be on one of Sandpoint’s busiest weekends. Sponsored by the Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC), the proceeds from the event go to support POAC’s efforts in the community to bring visual and performing arts as well as art education to Sandpoint. According to POAC’s executive director, Debbie Love, this year they expect 120 artisans

POTATO CHIP COOKIES from “Jail House Cuisine” by Louise Mathews These are delicate, lacey cookies that are irresistible. People ask if there is white chocolate or macadamia nuts in them; they rarely guess it is potato chips. This recipe can be doubled. Servings: Three dozen • ½ pound (2 sticks) margarine • ¾ cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1 ¾ cups flour • ¾ cup potato chips, crushed Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Cream together the margarine, sugar and vanilla in a mixer. Blend in the flour and work in the crushed potato chips (dough will be firm). Drop by teaspoons full onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 12 to 14 minutes until light brown. Watch the cookies very closely as they tend to burn.

e tell stories every day – it’s how we communicate what we did with a friend or pass on our family stories from generations past. Stories unite and bind us together, and they are limitless. The stories by these new authors couldn’t be more different – there is the retired prison cook who revolutionized prison food, the teenage fantasy writer and the twentysomething writer reflecting on the comingof-age stories. But as different as their stories are, they share the bond of the writing life – where inspiration is everywhere, and they can’t get their stories out fast enough. Memoirs of a Jail Food Service Director Louise Mathews, author of “Jail House Cuisine - From the Right Side of the Bars,” has published a culinary memoir and cookbook. In it, she not only lists the recipes she and her colleagues served inmates but also the stories behind the food.

Mathews had always planned on being a writer. What she didn’t plan on was making a career in the food service industry and spending most of that time providing meals for inmates. “I went to school to teach English and write books, but then I fell in love with a military guy and kept working in food service. I did hotels, schools and hospitals – I even owned my own restaurant. Everything I did got me ready to go to jail for 20 years,” Mathews said. She and her husband, a Navy veteran, traveled the country for his job, and she always got a job in the food service industry. Many of her jobs were male-dominated, but Mathews never feared. “I broke all kinds of glass ceilings.” Just like a twist of fate in a story, a simple newspaper want ad altered Mathews’ career. The ad was for chief of food service at the San Diego County Sheriff ’s Department. “I saw my first jail kitchen, and it was awful,

but I figured I could only make it better,” she laughed. The things that happened on her first day were something out of a movie. For starters, no one would talk to her. She was also not versed in the nuances of feeding inmates. When she asked why they didn’t distribute non-dairy creamers, she was bluntly told that inmates could make a pipe bomb with it. And when she went to leave, there were inmates in the kitchen being stripsearched! “I contacted the watch commander – he was laughing hysterically– and told him it was a health code violation,” she said. “Two years later, I told him I made the whole thing up. I just gave him something he could relate to.” Her first kitchen crew was a group of inmates who were awoken at 2am to help. “They were like junior high schoolers but worse. I did as much as I could, but the problem was the inmates,” she said. Then she found her solution – she’d change the way they prepared the food. She proposed and had a production kitchen built that prepares food using cook-chill technology, where food is cooked, chilled and packaged for reheating elsewhere. She also created world-class recipes which inadvertently kept the peace in the jails. “If they don’t like the food, they’ll riot,” she said. In the book, Mathews includes family recipes
created by her father, an Italian chef, such as his tomato gravy. “It’s good quality, done right and good,” she said. She also collected recipes from colleagues all over North America, England and Belgium. The recipes give a taste for the region since jail food varies according to location. “In Arizona, they serve ‘Menudo,’ which is tripe stew and a good hangover remedy,” she said. They also serve Indian flat bread made from a recipe from the Trail of Tears. In her book, you’ll also find anything from Canadian tea cakes to Aunt Jack’s Awesome Brownies from Alabama. Mathews has won numerous awards for her work. Among them, the prestigious International Diamond Award for the best correctional food; and the Silver Plate which is an award akin to winning an Oscar in her career. She retired in 2007 after 21 years cooking in jails for a total of 43 years in the food service industry. The book took time because she had to collect the recipes, test and refine them, plus include her memoir. “I had the idea for the book all along,” she said. “This is what I’ve always wanted to do.” Mathews is at work on a novel about a Native American character and reincarnation. You can find “Jail House Cuisine” on Amazon and some of the recipes on Facebook.

Dreaming up Worlds For Bonnie Gwyn Johnson, a conversation at age six with one of her older sisters sparked a passion for telling and writing stories. Now, at just age 17, the teen has two published books under her belt and two more in development – let alone the ones knocking around in her head! “(My sister and I) were on our way to the movies, and we started talking. Whenever we were together, we’d work on this story. I dictated and she typed because I was little,” Bonnie explained. But it wasn’t until a few years later that a story gripped her imagination in a fierce way. Playing with a friend and a box of dress patterns, they invented characters and stories.
She proposed and had a production kitchen build that prepares food using cook-chill technology, where food is cooked, chilled and packaged for reheating elsewhere. She also created worldclass recipes which inadvertently kept the peace in the jails.

You start with the ending because that way you know what the resolution is. Then you write the beginning, and you map out the scenes and figure out how it works. With a light that illuminated the constellations on her bedroom, they talked about where the characters lived in a planet not unlike Earth but light years away. She calls it “Elldamorae,” and has generations of brave characters who must lead their tribes to rebuild lost kingdoms. “We’d map out where the characters lived; we made up games of fairies and dragons, and those became the plot. The ideas sat around in my head for years, and I started writing them down,” she said. She was just 10 years old then. With a determination not seen in people years beyond her age, she has written and rewritten her “Elldamorae” novels. Being homeschooled has allotted her the luxury of time. It also became her education as she researched writing techniques and studied history for inspiration. She also annually attends the “Life, the Universe, and Everything” writing conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, for which she credits

learning much of the craft. It was there that she learned about a “seven-point plot process.” “You start with the ending because that way you know what the resolution is. Then you write the beginning, and you map out the scenes and figure out how it works,” she explained. She has also immersed herself in the online writing community. She started her blog, bonniegwyn.blogspot.com and is an administrator of the Author’s Think Tank, a national writing community, where she writes and manages posts from fellow members. Lastly, she participates in an online chat room where writers “sprint.”

communities – the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) – that inspired her to write two novels completely different from her childhood ideas. Every November, NaNoWriMo, encourages its members to write a novel in one month. The month-long exercise is meant to show writers they can write a novel using a set plan plus a little determination and late nights. Two years ago, Bonnie was going to use NaNoWriMo to write one of her books. Instead, she had a vivid dream of a dystopia where people voluntarily kept themselves captive as a way to remain “safe.” Thus, the idea for her two latest published books, “Escaping Safety” and “Surviving Darkness” were born. Bonnie wrote and finished “Escaping Safety” in one month followed by revisions and suggestions by her mother, who is a professional editor. The second took just a few months as well. Whether it’s online, on her laptop or in her journal, Bonnie writes every day. “Writing is my sanity. When I’m not writing, I’m depressed. I just have a passion for stories,” she said. She is currently working on “Living Fire,” the final segment to her dystopian fantasy series. Look for her books online at Amazon or Greatfamilybooks.com.

family. A lover of animals, she works at two different pet resorts.
Vichinsky, who is in her twenties, worked on her writing, posting it on various online communities when she discovered “Writers World” on Facebook. There, she was contacted by a former editor at Disney, who is now an independent publisher and editor of several author anthologies.
“I try to write 1000 words per day, but I have a job and a family. Doing any kind of writing daily is helpful. It’s like calisthenics,” she said.
“He and other writers were impressed with the emotions I expressed in my writing, and he took me under his wing in teaching me the finer point of essay writing. He put a label on things I didn’t know about, I learned more from him in six months than at school,” she said. That editor, Randall Matthews, taught her about “emoting,” which is how to tap into a reader’s emotions through the writing. He also taught her how to properly pace and avoid writing pitfalls such as passive construction. “It was relentless. You think you’re good but then I realized I just knew the basics,” Vichinsky said of the editor’s guidance. “You can never say that you’re done writing.”
Just like Mathews and Bonnie, Stephanie Vichinsky, always knew that she wanted to write. After several high school teachers encouraged her, Vichinsky decided that writing was something she was good at.
Inspiration is the easy part – observing people, their mannerisms and how we are alike or not are the kernels of ideas that lead to her stories and essays. Writing and doing it well “is as hard as rocket science. Building the scenes … it’s complicated. You need to study … You keep going because you can always get better,” she said.
“I took every writing class at North Idaho College and Eastern Washington University,”

The editor asked Vichinsky and three other authors to submit essays on life – the good, the bad and the in between – for the anthology, “Four Feet Under.” She focused on comingof-age essays to which readers could relate, regardless of their age. Working on her essays for the book was an exercise in pacing itself. The editor gave her 60 days to write 25 essays, but in total, the anthology took one year to complete and publish. Her stories recall happy childhood memories and bittersweet ones about growing up and being a young adult. The essay, “Flying,” recalls the childhood memory of reckless bike riding and the first feeling of flying that was inevitably lost once the neighborhood kids grew up and moved away. “Sherman Avenue” evokes the moment the narrator realizes that the relationship she thought she had with her sister never existed. “I tried to capture the universality of human nature – choosing certain moments where the emotion was relative. That’s really what (the book) was about,” she said. You can find “Four Feet Under” on Amazon, jacolpublishing.com and on Facebook at JaCol Publishing’s page and also her personal one. Currently, she is working on “Gospel,” a science fiction novel that is a reflection about how society shapes the way the characters live.

Picnicking in Style NEW TRENDS TO TRY WHILE HIKING AND PICNICKING THIS SUMMER.
BY SARAH POLYAKOV.
Each summer we have so many opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy hikes and picnics with friends and loved ones. But the question is, how do we do it in style? Fortunately, the fabrics used for today’s outdoor clothing provide the best of both worlds. Today’s athletic retailers offer skirts, skorts and shorts made to reflect the most current styles. However, unlike their department store counterparts, these pieces wash and dry easily while wicking away rain and resisting humidity. Today’s outdoor pants are shaped for hiking, comfortable enough to wear all day, and usually contain cleverly hidden zippered pockets for cellphones and other small items. Many hiking pants also offer the option to zip the pant legs off below the knee so that you have impromptu walking shorts when hot weather hits. But the best part about many outdoor pants is that some of them can double as your favorite pair of khakis and be worn to the office, all the while remaining comfortable and on-trend. Getting outdoors is important for the body and soul, but being mindful of the sun and its effect on health is even more important. While it’s great to cover ourselves in sunscreen, we often need more. The best feature of this year’s outdoor wear includes something very important — built in sun protection. Many active wear companies have taken note of the recent uptick in melanoma and have responded accordingly. It’s easy to find swimsuits, rash

guards, T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and even pants that include built-in sun protection equivalent to SPF 50. While you’re out, don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch. Dutch designer Jeriel Bobbe recently designed my favorite picnic basket of all time since it does more than carry lunch. Bobbe often lamented the fact that there were very few comfortable benches in the parks near his home, so he rose to the challenge. When folded, Bobbe’s basket looks like any other since it offers compartments to keep food, plates and cutlery. But if you take a few seconds to fold it out, this picnic basket transforms into an elegant table for two with two cushioned seats attached. It has even been designed to hook easily on the back of a bicycle. Embrace the outdoors and do it in style. But while you are out and about, don’t forget accessories such as a BPA-free water bottle, sunscreen, a geo-caching device and a selfie stick to show your friends that you actually did reach a mountain’s summit.

Tips to Keep You Healthy
Enjoy the Sun Without the Damage PROTECT YOUR EYES AND SKIN AGAINST UV RAYS.
Most people associate UV rays with summers at the beach, but UV rays are ubiquitous. Any exposure to natural light, whether from playing beach volleyball, walking to a parked car, sitting near an office window or staging a snowball fight, can damage skin. For example, after a tan fades, people might notice dark spots, uneven skin tone, blotchiness or wrinkles. And that’s all just surface damage — UV rays penetrate deep into the skin, creating damage that won’t be visible for years. “Under the surface there is invisible damage that can and will manifest into what is seen on the upper layer of the dermis,” says Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s Since 1851 consulting dermatologist and instructor in clinical dermatology at Columbia University in New York City.

Even if women diligently use sunscreen all year long, their skin will still suffer some photo damage. Luckily, women can repair, as well as prevent, damage. Some women resort to expensive procedures, like chemical peels and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments, which use lasers, to lessen visible skin damage. But women can also repair visible and invisible UV damage at home. Kiehl’s Since 1851 (www. kiehls.com), a company that has specialized in skin care since 1851, has introduced its PhotoAge Corrector High-Potency Spot Treatment. The treatment targets the melanin that causes discoloration by decreasing melanin production and helping to prevent existing melanin from rising to the surface. This decreases the appearance of blotches and dark spots for brighter, more

translucent skin. At the same time, antioxidants help prevent damage from free radicals. When used with its supporting cleanser, toner and moisturizer, the High-Potency Spot Treatment provides immediate luminosity, reduces dark spots and evens skin tone in as little as four weeks while also inhibiting invisible damage from rising to the surface. The clinically proven treatment is appropriate for all skin types and ethnicities. Like Skin, Your Eyes Need Year-Round Protection From UV Rays Most of us have gotten the message that exposing our skin to UV rays without any protection is about as smart as handing a signed blank check to a stranger. But it’s only recently that health experts have seriously begun warning about an equally dangerous threat those rays pose to another part of our bodies: our eyes. Think about it: The eyes are the only internal body tissues directly exposed to UV. Three hundred and sixty five days a year — no matter how “cloudy” it appears outside — radiation (mainly) from the sun is beaming down on our vulnerable windows to the world. “The rods and cones of the eye are rich in light-absorbing pigmented molecules called chromophores, making it particularly susceptible to photochemical reactions,” says Dr. Howard Purcell, O.D., F.A.A.O., former chairman of the Cornea and Contact Lenses Department at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry, noting that even the light produced by indoor fluorescent light bulbs relies on the release of UV radiation. “Over time, damage from UV radiation is cumulative and often irreversible.”
have shown that UV accelerates the deterioration that leads to this age-related condition. Cataract affects more than 22 million people age 40 and older in the U.S. alone. • Eyelid Cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 5 to 10 percent of all skin cancers are found on the eyelids. • Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Damage to the blood vessels and corresponding nerves in the retina blurs fine detail and dulls colors.
Think About It The eyes are the only internal body tissues directly exposed to UV. Three hundred and sixty five days a year.
Alarmed that 94 percent of the population remains unaware of the adverse effect UV radiation has on their eyes, an expert panel recommended the adoption of the eye-care equivalent of the successful systems used to rate skincare and sunscreen products. That’s now being done — in the form of the firstever “Eye-Sun Protection Factor” (E-SPF) by Essilor, the nation’s leading manufacturer of optical lenses (www.ESPF.com). “This means consumers will be able to better evaluate the complete level of eye protection provided by their eyewear,” says Purcell. E-SPF values vary from a low of two to a maximum of 25 for everyday lenses, with Essilor’s own Crizal No-Glare lenses being the first to attain the most complete daily protection level. For tinted and polarized sun lenses, the same company’s Crizal SunShield UV No-Glare lenses provide the maximum protection level with an E-SPF of 50+. And, yes, that does translate into 50 times more protection than without wearing any lens.
Among the potential effects of long-term exposure: • Cataracts. This progressive clouding of the eye’s lens is the primary cause of blindness worldwide, and studies

A Pain in the... PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME CAN CAUSE PAIN IN THE BACK, BUTTOCKS AND HIP. BY JENNY JONES, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY.
Everyone experiences temporary low back pain at some time in their lives, but sometimes it can become debilitating and greatly impact one’s ability to perform ordinary tasks and disturb sleep patterns. Lasting pain in the low back, especially when it begins to travel down into the hip, buttocks or leg, will send many people to seek medical diagnosis and help. Common terms used for such pain issues are known as lumbago or sciatica. Sciatica, a term for pain radiating into a lower limb from compression of a nerve, is a common complaint. The majority of cases is believed to be caused by the lower back, the lumbar spine. An often under looked source of pain in the low back, buttocks and leg is the piriformis muscle. This culprit, a small muscle deep in the buttocks, originates on the front aspect of the sacrum (tailbone) and attaches to the bony protuberance on the outside of the upper thigh (femur’s greater trochanter). This muscle rotates the leg outwardly to toes out position and can also bring the leg out to the side. The piriformis can become extremely irritated for a variety of reasons.
low back pain. Walking may temporarily alleviate the symptoms. Pins and needles sensations and numbness may travel from buttocks down the back of leg. This hip rotator muscle, when in spasm, will alter the pelvic and lower vertebrae positioning and movements, causing other conditions with related muscle shortening and weakness. If left untreated, pain will often develop up the back or farther down into the leg due to the abnormal postures created by the musculoskeletal dysfunction. The recovery process is usually slow, but includes anti-inflammatories as prescribed by your physician, deep massage, stretching, mobilization, ultrasound and electrical stimulation. Stretching and strengthening exercises performed in water is particularly helpful. Physical therapists can assess the cause of low back and buttocks pain and develop an appropriate treatment plan and instruct in the exercises indicated for the individual.
Predisposing factors for agitating a painful piriformis include sitting cross-legged or sitting on one foot; excessive sitting, especially on hard surfaces or on a wallet in a back pocket. Trauma, overuse, difference in leg length, foot problems or prolonged standing in poor posture may lead to piriformis syndrome.

A tight, spasming piriformis can directly apply pressure to the sciatic nerve. Deep, achy pain with tenderness may be experienced anywhere along the muscle. Extreme tenderness over its insertion on the femur may be misdiagnosed as hip bursitis. The syndrome’s common symptoms include pain with 15 to 20 minutes of sitting, standing or lying down.

Win the Craving Battle
Cravings are a natural phenomena of life. Without these primal signals for nutrient needs, our species may cease to exist! There are a few predominant reasons for why we experience food cravings and many ways to combat them. The cravings that plague us today can still be deeply rooted in our physiological needs but can also be a result of the constant bombardment of food advertising. When was the last time you shopped in a non-grocery store (say, an office supply or home goods store) and weren’t tempted with chocolate, chips, sweetened beverages and candy at the checkout? We make over 1,000 food decisions a day, mostly subconsciously, so here’s how to tune in and help you win that three o’clock battle.
KNOWING WHY AND SAYING GOOD-BYE.
BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST.
Why We Crave It’s just as important to know why we crave as it is to know what we crave. The top four reasons for food cravings are:
Battle It Out Do you know how to win that 3 o’clock battle with your cravings?
1. Dehydration – Dehydration is most often experienced as hunger. 2. Nutritional Deficiencies - Long distance runners may crave red meat due to their higher iron needs. People with inadequate mineral intake may crave salt. Dieters who are in a caloric deficit crave high-calorie

foods because their bodies believe to be in starvation. 3. Hormonal Imbalances – Most women report specific cravings related to their menstrual cycles. In reality, they are in need of specific nutrients to support each phase. 4. Feelings & Emotions – If you’re angry, tired, bored or lonely, your body may try to distract you with cravings. It’s called soul food for a reason! Bye-Bye Cravings Resisting food cravings is not always the way to go. If our bodies are trying to tell us we need a specific nutrient, listen. Or, if the craving is believed to be purely psychological, you deserve that piece of chocolate, then go for it (but only if you know when to stop). Attempting to “trick” your body by feeding it something similar to what it wants, think non-fat frozen yogurt for that ice cream craving, you may wind up even more unsatisfied and with a craving even stronger than before. Here are some strategies to work through common food cravings, the result of fluctuations in blood sugar, hormones and stress. • Start your day with a balanced breakfast that contains at least

20 grams of protein to reduce the likelihood of a mid-day sugar craving. • Cravings are often hunger in disguise. Reach for balanced snacks that contain fat, protein and carbohydrates like an apple and peanut butter, to balance blood sugar. • They can also be thirst in disguise so drink a full glass of water and see if that helps. • Decrease stress in your life. Sometimes cravings may be induced by an anxietyprovoking task like talking to your boss or giving a presentation. Identify stresstriggers and adapt a different coping skill in those situations (deep breaths, relaxing tea, etc). • Avoid added sugars –they just make you want more!
Cravings are often hunger in disguise. Reach for balanced snacks that contain fat, protein and carbohydrates like an apple and peanut butter, to balance blood sugar.
• Decrease caffeine consumption – caffeine can influence dramatic peaks and valleys in our blood sugar management. Drink caffeine only in the mornings and pair it with protein or fat. • Stop and assess WHY you may be having this craving using HALT- B; ask yourself are you Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired or Bored? • Work with your health care provider to figure out if cravings are a result of poor glucose control, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, an infection, poor stress adaptation or a hormonal imbalance.

Stay Heart Healthy KEY INGREDIENTS TO A HEALTHY HEART THIS SUMMER.
With the warm weather that summer brings, our schedules become packed with summer sports and activities. It’s a time when it can be easy to let your heart healthy diet slide to the bottom of the priority list. With a dash of planning and a spoonful of creativity, summer meals can taste as good as they are nutritious and give you the fuel you need to take advantage of the wonderful weather. Here are some tips for keeping your meals and snacks heart healthy in the summer months: Go Lean with Protein Being on-the-go doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice muscle-building protein in the summer. For dinner options, choose lean meats, poultry or fish. Select lean proteins for refreshing and easy-to-make sandwiches. And if you don’t want all that bread, try using Sandwich Thins or a a low-carb wrap instead. Become a Fruit Fanatic Summer is the season for fresh fruits that are chock full of vitamins, minerals and fiber. They make a great substitute for traditional desserts that are high in fat and calories. Wash and slice any combination of juicy melons, berries, or other fruits and add them to your favorite yogurt or sorbet and blend for a cooling and

healthy treat. Larger fruits such as peaches or pineapple also pair nicely with grilled items. Streamline Salads Salads are also a go-to for the summer months but accompanying oily dressing and cheese can load them down with fat and calories. Choose low-fat or light dressing options and steer clear from cream-based diet spoilers. Minimize added sodium and fat by sprinkling low-fat varieties such as Swiss, Mozzarella, Parmesan or cottage cheese. With these guidelines in mind, your summer meals will be every bit as heart healthy as they are tasty!
Salads are also a go-to for the summer months.

RUNNING THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
For the expert and the novice By Megan Olson Since 1990, the United States has experienced a steady growth in road race participation with over 19 million annual finishers. Whether a seasoned veteran or a novice runner, the Pacific Northwest (PNW) extends more unparalleled running opportunity than any other demographic in the United States. No other region possesses such variety, challenge and beauty in its running courses than the majestic PNW. It’s difficult to ascertain a specific solitary answer as of why people run. Running’s archaic and rudimentary nature allows it to be touted as one of the oldest sports known to humanity. Getting started as a runner is modest in

contrast to other popular sporting endeavors; its basic requirements consist of comfortable attire, shoes and a little fortitude. For most, running offers vast health benefits, relief from emotional stress and most importantly, a sense of accomplishment. The PNW is unsurpassed in the variety of its races. Whether it’s a trail run, a 5K, an ultramarathon, or anything in between, the PNW boasts them all. Oregon and Washington are at the head of the pack when it comes to road race variety. Not only do both states host thousands of races, many are distinctive and incomparable.

If seeking the road race with the most, the Lilac Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Washington is certainly exemplary. This high energy Goliath of a race is held the first Sunday in May and is notoriously esteemed for its average size of 50,000 runners and the intensity of its dreaded “Doomsday Hill.” The 12K race is the third largest in the nation, only after the Atlanta Peachtree Road Race and the New York City Marathon. Its popularity came early as it was drafted by Don Kardong, a local runner and Olympic marathon athlete. It started in 1976 with a little more than 1,000 runners and grew to 61,298 by 1996. This race has become a favorite and draws in the top athletes in the world.

The greater the adversity, the more fulfilling the triumph; difficult races always propagate that deeper sense of accomplishment. It’s the

Although Bozeman, Montana is just a little out of the perimeter of being accurately positioned within the Pacific Northwest, the Bridger Ridge Run has trail runners flocking to enter their names into its elite lottery. This harrowing August race was created by Bozeman’s supreme adventure athlete Ed Anacker and is limited to only 250 carefully selected athletes each

Sometimes, the run feels so intolerably brutal; blackened toenails, fatigued muscles, extreme conditions, dehydration and unsuitable attire are all nuisances that impede the run. Some of the most grueling, yet satisfying races in existence, can be found in British Columbia and Montana.
“Mother Nature’s Stair Master” as it consists of more than 2,800 natural stairs. Its steepness offers such intensity that its fastest official time is a humble 25:01 minutes, while the average time for the annual 150,000 trail runners and hikers is nearly two hours. The trail is open throughout the fair weather season and is available during daylight hours. Although intense, this trail is reasonably appropriate for varying levels of ability. This solitary endeavor is alluring as there is no entry deadline.

year. The race flaunts itself as a narrow and tormenting 19.65-mile trail that gains 6,800 feet in the Bridger Mountains. Runner’s World coined the Bridger Ridge Run as one of the best and most technical trail runs in the country. Outside Online has deemed it to be on the top 10 bucket list trail runs in the world. Any entry form with an opening line of “Are you sure you want to do this?” is unquestionably designed for the experienced runner. There is an anonymous quote that the human spirit needs places that have not been re-arranged by the hands of man. We can find ourselves enamored in these majestically beautiful moments that can only be experienced on foot. Life becomes serene, simple and fulfilling when running in a place of beauty. It’s just you, the view and the breeze generated by the acceleration of your own two feet. When it comes to the offering of nature’s picturesque landscape, Idaho and Washington will take your breath away. Data published by Running USA indicates that the half marathon is the fastest growing race in the industry. They report that since 2000, the number of finishers has quadrupled. The half marathon offers more of a challenge than the 5K but is not as extreme as the full 26.2-mile marathon. Sandpoint, Idaho is home to the Scenic Half Marathon; one of the most aweinspiring half marathons available. One of the notable components of this race is that it also offers a 5K and a 10K opportunity which make its scenic views available to the expert and the novice. In September, runners journey through the quaint downtown and make their

way across the iconic long bridge that bestows panoramic views of the mountains and Lake Pend Oreille. The Bellingham Bay Marathon in September is renowned as being one of the most beautiful of all courses. It begins and ends in the charming downtown area of Bellingham. Runners are enamored with views of the Bellingham Bay, San Juan Islands and the Cascade Mountains. This race is certified by the USA Track & Field organization as a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon and is generously supported by its volunteers. Many runners return each year so that they may partake in the scenic splendor only provided by this course. A run is never just a run; it’s irrelevant whether it’s one mile or 50 miles. It’s about setting out to accomplish something truly difficult. The sport parallels life; sometimes, you’re left feeling as though you could take on the world and other times, the world has taken on you. Occasionally, the runner unveils this treasurable moment in which the brain is immersed in a sea of its own endorphins and it can momentarily envision how it must feel to run with the elite. All great things seem to collide, and you find yourself as a running god. Whatever reason is stowed in the heart to run, there is no other place that will offer such diversity, challenge and scenic majesty than the great Pacific Northwest.
