PUBLISHER United We Stand YOU DRIVE DOWN THE STREET and see the flags at half-mast. If you are like me, you stop and wonder just which of the latest tragedies this represents. In the last several months we have been faced with senseless violence every time we turn on the TV. And with the recent murders of our police officers, this violence has risen to a whole new level. When will it stop? As a community and a society in general, it is time we start learning to respect one another in spite of our differences. When God created each one of us, He did so by making us each unique from one another. We should rejoice in our differences, not condemn one another because of them.

During this political season, we need to elect leaders who can step up and bring forth unity and solutions to our problems. We have seen enough of hurtful rhetoric and leaders who commit crimes only to have their hand slapped. Let’s start fostering a culture that works together as one and is divided by few. And let’s start today.

Unique Dream Homes

It used to be when someone mentioned their dream home, one envisioned a mansion on a hill on a large home on the shores of the ocean. But today more and more people are looking to not only downsize but to reduce their costs and be environmentally mindful at the same time. And to accomplish this goal, they are turning to shipping containers. In this article by Jani Gonzalez, you will learn about the many issues to consider when choosing a shipping container to construct your new home. Who knows, you may start to rethink what your ideal home will look like.

Good News Prayer is a powerful thing. We have all heard about life changing events that some attribute to an answer to a prayer. In this article by Patty Hutchens, you will learn about an organization that is using prayer to bestow blessings onto law enforcement officers. Adopt-A-Cop is an organization that is present in 24 states and is growing more popular. Learn how you can help support our police officers through this organization that was started by an officer in Michigan in the late 1990s.

Feature Story

Living in the United States, we as a society tend to take things for granted. Visions of people living in a crowded hut trying to make ends meet on a daily wage equivalent to what we may tip a local barista for a cup of coffee, are simply not images that enter our mind. But thanks to a nonprofit group out of Spokane, Washington, Partnering for Progress, there are people from our country helping to enrich and lend a hand to those in Africa who struggle on a daily basis. In this article by Mike McAuliffe, you will be inspired by the difference the group is making.

FOREVER OR TRANSITIONAL? HOW YOU VIEW YOUR HOME WILL IMPACT YOUR DECOR NOT ONCE HAVE I WALKED into a home and thought “I could just move right in and wouldn’t have to change a thing!” Every one of us puts our own special touches on where we live, whether it’s intentional or not. Special touches such as paint colors, artwork, furnishings and décor make our home what we like, but certainly do not appeal to everyone. We can determine if a home is a “forever” home or if it’s just a “transitional” home. People that have their forever homes put a lot of effort into the finishes, and there are always unique, sometimes quirky, aspects that make it theirs. Some of those unique aspects can be smart investments or some can be detrimental to resale value. However, if it’s your forever home, you don’t care about resale value, so it can be as unique as you want, right? On the flip-side, if you don’t plan on staying in that home forever, you shouldn’t do something too crazy because it makes it harder to sell. Smart things that people do with their forever homes are things such as spending money on quality finishes such as high end cabinetry, trim and wood flooring or energy efficient window coverings. These are all smart investments because if you

SandpointLivingLocal.com

21

QUALITY LONG-TERM FINISHES

did decide that maybe you wanted to sell your forever home, you would get a return on that investment. Real estate agents love advertising these features when listing homes because these are investments that people do not just splurge on if they are trying to fix it up enough to make it look appealing. Then, there are the quirky, unique things that maybe aren’t as smart of an investment, but still make your forever home yours. For example, one home I visited had a closet that was transformed into a fish tank. These homeowners had cut a rectangular opening in the wall, framed it with glass and created a huge, built-in fish tank. The storage space of the closet then became the water filtration system, the actual tank, and all the paraphernalia that it took to keep the tank running. That’s not exactly something you do with the thought that you’re increasing the home’s value for resale. In fact, a potential buyer may walk in and think of the money they would have to spend to convert that back to a closet.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

That being said, whenever you are looking to replace cabinets, countertops or change any interior finishes, you need to ask yourself if this going to be your forever home and you can choose whatever you want, or if this is a transitional home and it will need to appeal to potential buyers. This makes a big difference in how wild patterned your countertops may be or which paint color you pick for your cabinets versus maybe going with a more neutral stain color.

Real estate agents love advertising these features when listing homes because these are investments that people do not just splurge on if they are trying to fix it up enough to make it look appealing.

Are you going to spend the money on those more energy-efficient window coverings, which over time will pay for themselves with energy cost savings? Or will you pick a less expensive option because you won’t be in the house long enough to reap the financial savings?

We Set the Standard!

These are all the decisions that can affect how unique your forever dream home may be or how to make that transitional one appealing to someone else looking to buy their future dream home.

It could be expensive. The average cost for one year at an in-state public school is $22,261, while the comparable expense for a private school is $43,289, according to the College Board’s figures for the 2012–2013 academic year. And these costs have continued to rise. Still, there’s no need to panic. Your child could receive grants or scholarships to college, which would lower the “sticker price.” But it’s still a good idea for you to save early and often. To illustrate the importance of getting an early jump on college funding, let’s look at two examples of how you might fund a college education. A 529 plan is one way — but not the only way — to save for college. (The following examples are hypothetical in nature and don’t reflect the performance of an actual investment or investment strategy).

Financial Advisor

Example 1: Suppose you started saving for your child’s college education when she was 3 years old. If you contributed $200 a month, for 15 years, to a 529 plan that earned 7 percent a year, you’d accumulate about $64,000 by the time your daughter turned 18. With a 529 plan, your earnings grow tax free, provided all withdrawals are used for qualified higher education purposes. (Keep in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10 percent IRS penalty).

Example 2: Instead of starting to save when your child was 3, you wait 10 years, until she turns 13. You put in the same $200 per month

to a 529 plan that earns the same 7 percent a year. After five years, when your daughter has turned 18, you will have accumulated slightly less than $15,000. Clearly, there’s a big disparity between $64,000 and $15,000. So, if you don’t want to be in a position where you have to start putting away huge sums of money each month to “catch up” on your college savings, you’ll be well advised to start saving as early as possible — specifically, during the first few years of your child’s life. Of course, given all your other expenses, you may find it challenging to begin putting away money for college. And with so many years to go until you actually need the money, it’s tempting to put off your savings for another day. But those “other days” can add up — and before you know it, college may be looming. Consequently, you may want to put your savings on “autopilot” by setting up a bank authorization to move money each month into a college savings account. And, as your income rises, you may be able to increase your monthly contributions. Save early, save often: It’s a good strategy for just about any investment goal — and it can make an especially big difference when it comes to paying for the high costs of higher education.

AMPLE HVAC CAREERS IN NORTH IDAHO LEARN A TRADE! IT’S A QUESTION WE WORK ON as a child, a teenager, a 20-something and often in midlife as well: “What do I want for a career?” Should I follow in my parents’ footsteps and help run the family business? Perhaps going away to college for a few years will help introduce me to a career I hadn’t considered, but what if I don’t want to leave home? An industry that is thriving all across North Idaho are the “trades” and luckily for us, we don’t have to go far for a quality and affordable education. Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) technicians are in high demand. With so much new construction in Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, HVAC companies are having a difficult time finding enough bodies to do the work. “I have very much enjoyed my 41 years in the HVAC trade,” explained Gary Friebe, owner of Comfort Heating and Cooling in Post Falls. “It has provided my family and I a very good and steady living over the years. It has been very rewarding for me to be able to meet and build relationships with so many of our customers.” Both Lewis-Clark State College and North Idaho College offer certificates and four-year degrees in the trades. As with any education,

BY COLIN ANDERSON

the more advanced your degree, the better pay, but going rate for a journeyman HVAC employee is often around $25/hour — a wage hard to find in our communities. Friebe says there are four factors that he really enjoys about his career: “Satisfying work by helping others, good pay and benefits, something different every day and a great way to interact with many different people.” Installation of heating and air conditioning units in new commercial and residential buildings is keeping most companies busy now, but we’ve all seen firsthand the ebbs and flows of the housing market. During slower times of construction, installations might be down, but there is still plenty of work doing yearly maintenance and service. It can get brutally hot and frigid cold in North Idaho, and a career in HVAC will help you rest easy knowing you are helping people stay warm in winter and cool in summer. There are careers of all kinds, and if you’re young and planning your future or older and looking for a job change, a career in HVAC offers stability, good pay and work out from behind a desk. “There is a great opportunity for young people in this trade, and (there are) some good local trade schools in the area with a shorter schooling time than traditional colleges,” said Friebe.

GOT LIFE? GET THE FACTS BEHIND LIFE INSURANCE

BY TREVOR CAMPBELL

NO EXCLUSIONS “STUFF HAPPENS.” You’ve likely heard the phrase before, and nothing could be closer to the truth when it comes to everyday life. We talk a lot about home insurance, car insurance, business insurance – all equally important for protecting the things that matter most in your life. But what about the people who matter most? What are you doing to make sure they are protected should something happen?

true when you experience certain life events. Have you recently purchased a home, welcomed a baby to the family, have a child attending college, or suffered a loss? Each of these things can happen at any time, and when they do there is no better time to start thinking about your family’s future and what would happen if they lost your income.

Why do I need life insurance?

What is life insurance?

Quite often, couples brush off life insurance, thinking “That’s something mom and dad need to worry about – not me.” But what would happen without your income? Who would help take care of your family or your business?

When I talk to clients about life insurance, three questions usually always come up: • How can I make sure my wife/husband can pay off existing debt?

Life insurance isn’t a topic most people want to think about let alone talk about, but there are misconceptions surrounding what it is, what it does, how much it costs – and it’s important to separate fact from fiction so you can understand what you and your family need.

• What do I need to do to ensure my child/children can attend college? • Will my family be able to afford the same lifestyle they’ve come to know and love?

The facts of life…insurance

With these three questions in mind, ask yourself, “Do I have a plan in place to protect my family when I’m gone?” If you provide financial security for a loved one, your family, or your business, life insurance can help offset certain costs if something happens to you.

As our list of life changing events grows, our needs in regards to insurance change too. When you buy a bigger house, you adjust your insurance to ensure you have enough protection and coverage – the same should hold

Life Insurance can: • Help pay for funeral costs • Pay bills and living expenses, including debt, credit cards and house payments • Keep the family business open • Pay for your child’s college tuition Who needs life insurance? When it comes to life insurance, there really are no exclusions. If you’re married, married with kids, a single parent, a parent with grown children, a business owner, retiree, or single adult - anyone with financial obligations can benefit from life insurance.

As our list of life changing events grows, our needs in regards to insurance change too.

What does life insurance cost? One of the biggest reasons people tell me they don’t have life insurance is money. They think it’s simply too expensive. In fact, according to one survey, 86 percent of people said they don’t have life insurance for this very reason, but they actually overestimate its cost by more than two times. How much life insurance costs depends on how much protection you need or want, and that’s dependent on a number of factors including your age, health and income, to name a few. Life Happens, a nonprofit organization focused on educating consumers about life, health and disability insurance, breaks down the cost of $250,000 in coverage for a healthy 30-yearold to around $12 a month – as much as you might pay for three lattes. Life insurance prices continue to drop and it’s never been more affordable to protect your family’s future while providing peace of mind.

If life insurance is something you’ve considered but aren’t sure where to start, I recommend talking with an independent agent who understands the ins and outs of it. As we all know, life happens – being properly protected can make things a lot easier for you and your loved ones.

Sandpoint police officer awarded lifesaving medal. By Patty Hutchens

ANYONE WHO HAS ENTERED THE WATER of Lake Pend Oreille in May knows that it is still very frigid even if the air temperature is warm. Just ask Lt. Rob Dressel of the Sandpoint Police Department. On May 26, Lt. Dressel and other officers arrived on the scene of a sinking boat near the Long Bridge. The boat’s two passengers were trying to make their way to the shore, but the approximate 60 feet of swimming became overwhelming for one given the frigid temperatures. In a frightening scene, hypothermia began to settle in on the one victim. That is when Lt. Dressel knew what he had to do to save the victim’s life. “Once I arrived on scene, I began to assess the situation as I was peeling off some of my duty gear and grabbing my lifesaving disc. I could see two people in the water, and I was very concerned for the one I ended up going and getting,” recalls Lt. Dressel who said his concern stemmed from the fact the one victim was barely moving. “Once I made the decision to go in and get him, it was scary.” Lt. Dressel thought about the possibility that someone may have to come after him when he went in due to the frigid water making it difficult to breathe. “I guess adrenaline

kicked in and got me through it.” Lt. Dressel was able to rescue the victim from what otherwise would have likely been a fatal accident. In recognition of his heroic efforts, Sandpoint Police Department’s Captain Rick Bailey nominated Lt. Dressel for a lifesaving medal stating, “There is little doubt in my mind the victim would have perished if it were not for Lt. Dressel’s life saving actions.” Lt. Dressel is humble when he speaks about the incident. He told Captain Bailey that “a cup of coffee and a pat on the back would have been fine,” but appreciated being awarded the medal. Lt. Dressel began his career in law enforcement in 1987 with the Bonner County Sheriff ’s Office as a Reserves Deputy. He was later hired by the county full time as a Detention Deputy and later transferred to a patrol deputy. In 1992, Dressel was hired by the Sandpoint Police Department as a patrol officer and moved up the ranks to the position of Lieutenant. He currently oversees the daily operations of the Department’s patrol division.

QUALITY LIVING Local contractors help make dreams come true BY PATTY HUTCHENS

YOUR HOME IS A UNIQUE REFLECTION of you. Not only that, but it is also the largest investment you will likely make in your lifetime. That is why when you choose a building contractor you want to ensure that they provide not only outstanding customer service but also construct a home of the highest quality that will stand the test of time.

others, we drove over the Long Bridge and knew we wanted to make Sandpoint our home.” And although they moved here without knowing anyone and without a job, they consider themselves blessed to be able to build their business and grow their family in the community of Sandpoint. With a true sense of community and a love of the place they now call home, Scott and Barbara and their employees eagerly give back to the community that has supported them. Scott proudly served many years on the Panhandle Building Contractors Association Board, two years of which he was president, and he currently represents the northern 10 counties on the Idaho Contractor Board.

Selle Valley Construction in Sandpoint is a custom homebuilder that many have called upon to create their dream home. They first opened in 2005 and when many other contractors were going out of business due to a downturn in the economy, Selle Valley Construction not only survived but also thrived. Owners Scott and Barbara Schriber and their team work hard to create a home for each of their clients that truly reflects the client’s individual style.

Barbara shares that she had the pleasure of serving on the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce Board for four years and was chairperson of the Chamber’s Business Development Committee for two years. She is also the current treasurer of Northside Elementary’s Parent Teacher Organization.

“We pay close attention to detail and quality,” said Barbara. “As a smaller home builder, we limit ourselves to four or five homes per year, which allows us to work closely with the homeowner.”

Jesse Wurm, the project coordinator for Selle Valley Construction, is very active with the Chamber’s 7B Women committee and is a recent graduate of the Chamber’s Leadership program. The Chamber also recently named her volunteer of the month.

Part of their mission is to always put the client first and to make sure they build every home, regardless of the budget, with the greatest attention to detail and maintain the highest of quality in their work. “We have an obligation to our clients and their homes that extends well past the standard warranty,” said Scott.

In recognition of their fine craftsmanship, Selle Valley Construction has been featured twice in Mountain Living Magazine and a home they built in Sagle was named Small Home of the Year for 2015 by Fine Homebuilding. Check out their website below for a sample of what they do.

Their success is something the husband and wife team attribute to the dedication and skill of their staff and subcontractors. And in a time when people are seeking to be environmentally conscious, Barbara and Scott are pleased to offer their expertise as Certified Green Professionals with the National Association of Home Builders.

If you are in the market for a newly constructed home, contact Selle Valley Construction. They will make your dream come true!

“We’ve built a number of homes certified by Energy Star and the National association of Home Builders Green Building Standard,” said Barbara.

COMPASSION AND COMMUNITY PAULA KARR - MORE THAN AN EDUCATOR BY PATTY HUTCHENS

MAKING LEARNING FUN AS AN EDUCATOR for the last 21 years, kindergarten teacher Paula Karr said she finds it so rewarding to watch her students develop as learners. “They have such enthusiasm and excitement for learning at this age,” shared Karr. “When I look back at the beginning of the year and compare it to the end of the year, I am amazed at my students’ academic and social growth. I feel fortunate to be part of this journey.”

Setting the PLATINUM STANDARD in compliance excellence.

With over two decades of teaching, the experiences have been many. But what Karr said she treasures most was a three-week educational trip she took to Japan. It was in the summer of 1999 when she participated in the Fulbright Memorial Teacher Program along with other teachers from across the country. “We traveled to several cities in Japan and learned about the Japanese culture, customs and education system,” said Karr. “It was an amazing learning experience for me that gave me a whole new perspective on the Japanese people and their approach to education.” During her summer adventure, Karr gathered a suitcase full of materials to bring back to share with her students. She used the materials to give presentations about Japan to her students as well as at a teachers’ conference. She also gave a presentation at the local library during a summer reading program for kids. And it hasn’t stopped there. “I continue to share what I learned in Japan with my students, and they are all so excited when I bring out my Japan artifacts during our ‘Great Big World’ reading unit,” said Karr.

Praying to Protect Adopt-A-Cop program provides support to law enforcement By Patty Hutchens

rayer. We hear stories of how it can transform and impact lives. It is powerful. In today’s world where violence seems to be a daily occurrence, there are people who are using the power of prayer to support those who put their lives on the line each day to protect us – our law enforcement officers. Coeur d’Alene police officer Sergeant Greg Moore was shot and killed in the line of duty. His death was followed by prayer vigils, notes of support and much more. And his death was not an isolated incident. The recent violence against

through prayer and notes of encouragement. Families and individuals pray for a specific officer in their community and provide ongoing support to the officers. Although the program started back in 1998, it is gaining in popularity in recent years and is now in 24 states across the nation. It’s founder, Chaplain Sgt. Ken Rochell of Michigan State Police, shares that as a Christian police officer he knows and appreciates the power of prayer.

Lift Up

“I feel it has been the prayers of my family and friends that have kept me safe not only physically but emotionally,” said Sgt. Rochell in an open letter on the program’s website. “Those prayers have also given me a heart for the people I have

officers around the country has impacted families, communities, fellow officers and beyond. According to Janine Shepard of Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene, 109 law enforcement officers in Bonner County were adopted in prayer at this year’s National Day of Prayer. People took names and pledged to pray for the officer regularly. “We are changing the climate of how people feel about the law enforcement, praying for their safety and encouraging people to come alongside of our law enforcement,” said Shepard. To show support through prayer is simple and yet powerful. Getting the community involved through Adopt-A-Cop is one way that we can support our officers, and it is an easy process. the Adopt-A-Cop program advises that there be a commitment from a church and law enforcement agency to go forward with the program. The group also recommends that those seeking to start a chapter reflect on certain Biblical passages which include Psalm 127:1, which reads: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” They also refer to Proverbs 14:15 – “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.” The next step in forming a chapter is to assemble a team of advisors to provide direction and feedback to the mission of the group. And in order to obtain the buy-in of churches and law enforcement agencies, it is vital that you share ways that the group will enhance the ministry of the church while also supporting the officers in the community.

Hope

The final step is to devise a plan to enlist prayer partners and law enforcement officers who want to participate in the program. Adopt-A-Cop also advises that churches obtain approval from their pastors and that before moving forward there is also approval from the appropriate law enforcement officials.

“I am a wife of a kind hearted, community caring, devoted father/husband/son/brother/uncle and law enforcement officer. I send my husband out every evening with only 1 wish, and that is he returns to us in the morning. I ask for prayers for him along with all his fellow brother and sisters in blue. Please pray for us daily and all the Polk County sheriff officers. Thank you.”

Our law enforcement officers are facing challenges like never before. Their pain and suffering is found in the requests for prayer that are posted on the Adopt-ACop website. And it is not just the officers asking for prayers but their family members as well. One post from September of 2015 reads:

Another request for prayer reads, “I am actually a retired officer...and the widow of an officer killed in the line of duty. It has been a moment-to-moment challenge to deal with all of this and others in my former department as well as my husband’s who look to me for spiritual guidance because of the stand I have taken and the faith I have shown. Honestly, as I try to help my 12-year-old son navigate this, I’m flat running out of strength and energy myself. I need reinforcements. I’m pouring out more than I am getting refilled. I keep praying for clarity of direction, but I still am not sure. Thank you!” Yes, the struggles are many and the fear is great. And while we turn on the news to more stories of violence, let us remember that there is hope. That hope is found through the simple act of prayer. Let us come together as a community to pray for those who protect us each and every day. To find out more about Adopt-A-Cop, log onto adopt-a-cop.org.

PLANNING FOR YOUR FUTURE

Local firm provides personalized service to help you reach your goals BY PATTY HUTCHENS THE FINANCIAL WORLD CAN BE AN INTIMIDATING place to navigate, especially if you are just starting out in your career. How much should I save for retirement? How much should I save for my children’s education? Or maybe you find yourself in mid-life panicking that you should have started saving long ago. It can all be overwhelming, but that is where Ken Wood, a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Ponderay, can help.

He also attributes the tremendous growth his business has experienced over the last 18 months to his loyal clients and a supportive community.

With over nine years of experience in the financial field, Wood joined Edward Jones in October of 2014 taking over for the retiring Rob Kincaid. Although he has been employed at different financial institutions over the years, Wood said financial planning has always been the career he enjoys most, especially when it comes to having the opportunity to help people from all walks of life and economic backgrounds.

While there are many instances where he is proud to have helped his clients navigate through the process of planning their financial future, Wood shares that his favorite conversation to have with clients is when he is able to let them know that they can not only retire earlier than they anticipated, but that they will also be comfortable throughout their retirement.

“We are consistently receiving referrals and introductions from our current clients,” said Wood. “I feel it is a testament to the service we provide and how comfortable we make people feel with the investment process.”

“It’s very fulfilling in my role to help people transition to that new stage in life,” he said.

“Everyone I work with is unique and has different paths that they have travelled in life. To me, it is fascinating to hear about their past and how they have gotten to where they are today,” said Wood. “It is also extremely rewarding to uncover their future goals and to play a role in helping them achieve them.”

With a desire to give back to the community that supports him, Wood is involved in several organizations in the Sandpoint area. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, is an active member of the Sandpoint Rotary Club and eagerly lends a hand to various nonprofits when needed.

Wood explains that Edward Jones is a full service financial planning firm that offers numerous investments and services. “This includes smart spending and borrowing options, retirement planning, paying for education, estate considerations and asset protection,” said Wood, who adds that it is never too early for young people to start thinking about saving for retirement, even if it is only a minimal amount each month.

“We live in an absolutely amazing community and area. Giving back to this community has always been important to me, and I have seen first hand the impact it makes on the lives of others,” said Wood. “To remain a vibrant community, people have to be willing to step up and be involved in areas that are important to them and their lives.”

As one of the largest financial services firms in the country, Edward Jones prides itself on its personalized service it provides. “Those who work for Edward Jones believe the company became one of the largest financial services firms in the nation by not acting that way,” said Wood, whose staff includes his assistant Tammy Bradshaw.

One of her greatest regrets was that she didn’t share her writing with her mother; keeping her work secret “is one of my greatest sadnesses.” Her mother’s struggle with MS had an “enormous impact” on her, and the personal experience of living with her mother’s declining health is a significant part of who she is. Her desire to “do good” is reflected throughout her “Harry Potter” books, in her charities, and in her mother’s memory, the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic at the University of Edinburgh. Multiple sclerosis affects the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and optic nerves. It is a chronic and disabling disease that presents symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, muscle stiffness, thinking problems, urinary tract infections and blurred vision. More severe symptoms include paralysis and loss of vision. Symptoms and severity are unpredictable and vary from person to person. The first symptoms often occur between the ages of 20 and 40, and are two to three times more likely to occur in women than men.

Symptoms manifest when the protective covering, the myelin sheath, around nerve fibers is damaged. The damage develops in multiple locations on the myelin sheath. These areas progress into hardened (sclerosis) scars or plaques that disrupt signals from one neuron to another within the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body. Symptoms depend on the specific nerves affected and the amount of damage experienced. People with severe MS may lose the ability to walk, while others have long periods of remission without any new

symptoms. There is no cure but treatments are available. The cause of MS is still unknown. Rowling continues to provide funding for the clinic memorializing her mother and speaks out about how people can make a difference for those affected by MS. You don’t need the influence of fame and fortune, “We can change lives just by writing a letter.” she says.

families affected by MS and help give hope to the millions of people living with this debilitating disease. Bike the US for MS organizes numerous bike trips, including several cross-country rides, to raise awareness and funds in an effort to find a cure for MS. The organization provides logistics and guidance, and route leaders on the coastto-coast trips. The route leaders have previously completed cross-country trips.

and to overnight accommodations. They inform riders if there is a route detour or other changes, by regularly texting participants. Texts often include some inspiration particularly on tough days. They are also knowledgeable about bike maintenance and repair. A support vehicle provides back-up along the route and carries the cyclists’ supplies and gear. On July 25, riders participated in the Bike the US for MS - Northern Tier ride, which started in Bar Harbor, Maine and finished in Seattle, Washington on August 4. They passed through Sandpoint on the 60th day of their 69-day journey. Cyclists completing the full coast to coast journey had traveled a total of 4,295 miles through 15 states. From beautiful Bar Harbor, the gateway to Acadia National Park, the 2016 team headed west through New Hampshire and Vermont to the shores of Lake Ontario, stopping to admire Niagara Falls before gliding along the south shore of Lake Erie. As they moved through the Midwest, they followed the rolling hillsides along the Mississippi River and took in the Great Plains and Badlands. Once they arrived in western Montana, the horizontal road across the prairie began to gain elevation as riders entered Glacier National Park and crossed the Continental Divide on the Going to the Sun Road. After enjoying a relaxing day in Sandpoint, they geared-up and headed out the

morning of July 27 in route to Seattle. All participants, whether completing the full 4,295 miles or a segment of the Northern Tier route, expressed a wonderful feeling of pride and accomplishment. The enjoyment of sharing an incredible experience with friends, new and old, and the camaraderie that comes with doing something challenging for a good cause lasts a lifetime. If you are interested in participating in a MS cycling event, but a crosscountry ride is beyond your time availability and fitness level, there are many other options. One of the many other MS cycling events is the Bike MS: Cycle the Silver Valley, which is a local two-day event. Cycling options include 20, 50, or 100 miles on the first day and 25, 35, or 50 miles on the second day. The route follows the beautiful Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes bike path through the Silver Valley, along the Coeur d’Alene River, and Lake Coeur d’Alene. In 2012, the Rails to Trails Conservancy named the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes one of the top 25 trails in the United States. Bike MS: Cycle the Silver Valley takes place in September and is a fun event! You can ride as an individual or form a team. Last year, a team of ladies from Sandpoint, Manic Mommies, participated in this event and took the Rookie Team of the Year award! They will be back again this year for

40

a couple of days of adventure and camaraderie and to help the National MS Society fund research, advocate for change and help people with MS live their best lives. If you would like to support your local Sandpoint ladies, Google Bike MS: Cycle the Silver Valley, scroll down to the Teams tab and click Team List, then scroll down and click on Manic Mommies. Any amount is greatly appreciated as they help to find a cure! If you are interested in learning more about the disease, their cycling and walking events, or how to donate, contact the National MS Society at nationalMSsociety.org or by calling 1.800.344.4867. All of the proceeds from the 2016 rides will support research, treatment and will help with financial assistance projects. Funds from 2016 cyclists will be delivered by bike to the Swedish MS Center in Seattle, University of Virginia’s MS clinic in Charlottesville, and Fairview MS Achievement Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Contributions will also go to the National MS Society’s No Opportunity Wasted Research Campaign, which supports ongoing research for treatments and toward a cure. Funds also support financial assistance for accessibility projects. Let’s all use our power for good and help find a cure.

The Sound of a Sandpoint Summer Festival poster a long standing tradition By Dustin Hoffman Photos courtesy of Kathryn Weisberg

Every year the Festival at Sandpoint commissions an original piece to be created by a local artist. That piece is destined to become The Festival Poster. It’s kind of a big deal. First off, what’s a music festival without a sweet poster? Moreover, the Festival at Sandpoint poster showcases an important community event.

Artists, while commissioned by the Festival, are appointed to their role by fellow artists, which makes the poster a part of the art community as much as it is a representation of The Festival. The chosen artist has full creative license. Completed original works are donated to The Festival and released publicly at a much-anticipated unveiling party. Prints, in poster form, are sold to support the Festival. In the end, the original work goes to auction with proceeds benefitting The Festival. If you visit The Festival website, (www. festivalatsandpoint.com and look for the Gallery link under More on the right-hand side of the menu), you can view a gallery of posters from years past. There is a richness of history in that sequence of images, a long standing tradition, individual expressions of

over three decades of summers in Sandpoint. Once you’ve taken time to appreciate past artwork, consider this year’s poster. It is an exceptional painting created by local artist Kathryn Weisberg, a Sandpoint resident. She is accomplished, well-traveled, and extremely talented. Weisberg is a wildlife artist of 25 years and a conservationist. She is also a certified PADI divemaster. Working for some time now as a professional artist, Weisberg prefers painting en plein

Her contribution to The Festival, a painting entitled “The Sound of a Sandpoint Summer,” is an attempt to capture her love for the North Idaho landscape she paints so vividly while envisioning it from the perspective of a traveling musician. In this case, the musician seems to have been lured away from the practice space by the glimmer water of Lake Pend Oreille. The Festival at Sandpoint Celebrating the summer season with good music, food and drink. By Dustin Hoffman I love the seasons in North Idaho, each for a different reason and all because they contrast one another so well. Winter has its challenges and thrills, fall its colors, spring its rushing water and summer — it is a season unrivaled — like a book of poetry I’m happy to read time and again. Summer is the kind of poetry you feel, the kind that whispers something so only the deepest parts of you hear. It alters your disposition toward life in a way you struggle to articulate, leaving you better for the experience. Here, we are amidst this season of life, warmth and light. We are in the forest and on the water. We celebrate with friends with good food and drink, and we revel in music. I know that many of us look forward to summer, not

necessarily because winter is too hard, dark or bitter but because summer here holds an epic promise of transcendence. One of the highlights of summer here is an event that resonates the spirit of the season: The Festival at Sandpoint. For many readers, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know. Others are skeptical. Still others are clueless. Here’s what you should know. The Festival cranks up fast with Brew Fest set to the music of Bruce Hornsby and Bridges Home. If you haven’t noticed, American beer is not what it used to be (you know, bad). About 30 microbreweries will be onsite and represented by the best they have to offer. At the other end of the Festival

is Taste of The Stars, where 35 wineries will assemble for a complimentary wine tasting. By complimentary I mean for anyone in attendance (before you get too excited, I also mean 21 years and older kiddos). Taste of the Stars is a wine event that rivals none other in the state of Idaho. Expect to enjoy wine and fireworks with the Spokane Symphony, Maestro Gary Sheldon and Vadim Neselovskyi. Some of the other highlights this year include performances by Emmylou Harris with The Brothers Landreth and The Powers (Saturday, August 6), and Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals with Tom Freund and Sadie Waggoner (Saturday, August 13). This year features two dance shows, Railroad Earth with Rabbit Wilde (Friday, August 5)

and the aforementioned Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals show. In addition, you might anticipate performances by Angelique Kidjo with Afrosonics and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Luke Bell. Whatever your musical taste, one of these artists is bound to represent and deliver. I would be remiss not to mention the Family Concert with The Festival Community Orchestra (Sunday, August 7). In a way, it is an expression of the heart of the Festival at Sandpoint — a true family concert with a performance by the Festival Community Orchestra and Sandpoint’s Studio One Dancers plus an animal petting zoo, pony rides, clowns, face painting and games. The Festival turns 34 years old this year but it

has evolved over the decades. On its inception, The Festival was a venue for symphonic performance intended to boost to local economy. While symphonies still hold a major role in The Festival, passing years have seen the inclusion of a variety of music, food, drink and fireworks! It is intentionally a community event. The Festival is, without question, quite an event. In actuality, it’s a series of events spanning two weeks. The efforts of The Festival at Sandpoint team, their volunteers and sponsors, are essential in pulling it off. One of the most notable differences between The Festival at Sandpoint and other music festivals seems to relate to the motivation behind the event and the faithful stewardship of the team carrying the torch.

Diana “Dyno” Wahl, executive director of The Festival at Sandpoint, affirmed The Festival is oriented to the audience in a way that other music festivals are not. The Festival at Sandpoint is a nonprofit organization whose major financial goal is to remain viable for the sake of showgoers from now until forever. “I feel like I am a steward of something right now that will keep going well beyond my lifetime,” she said. The Festival exists for two primary reasons. Neither one is to line pockets. First, The Festival aims to “make great music and great performers accessible to the community.” In doing so, the team hopes to reflect the values and tastes of the community. Second, The Festival seeks to inspire and enable the next generation of musicians.

Perhaps the best evidence of The Festival’s dedication to the community is the simple fact that it is a BYOC (“C” is for Cooler) event. Who does that? Sure, there are vendors onsite to supply you with food and drink — two full bars and a variety of foods — but when was the last time you went to a show without getting the full TSA shake-down on entering so as to force you to buy everything inside at a 300 percent markup? The Festival’s attitude toward showgoers is a nod to the laidback boating and beach-bumming summer fun we value.

of providing 25 full-time jobs. In addition, they assist other nonprofits by donating tickets to local auctions and schools and inviting them to set up booths on Festival Street. The Festival is viable in part because of what they offer — a community gathering around food, drink and music. However, it could not exist without the annual assistance of 400 to 500 volunteers and the patronage of local business and individual donors. If you love what they do, consider getting involved at some level. There is a place for everyone.

The Festival has a major impact on the local community. While it’s not exactly quantifiable, some effects are: 20,000 people will attend The Festival over its two weeks. According to a study by the University of Idaho School of Business, The Festival generates $1.8 million dollars of revenue for the local community during that time which is the equivalent

curriculum. They even put on a 5th grade outreach program in which an ensemble visits schools, plays symphonic music for kids and gives them and their parents tickets to the last night of The Festival — all to interest them in playing music once they get to the 6th grade. The Festival also sponsors Youth and Community Orchestras.

Health & Lifestyle BREAKING UP WITH YOU

An Open Letter to the Gym By Heidi Canda ONCE AGAIN IN LIFE, my coping skills had come under attack. I was being attacked by my mind and thoughts. I have a history of depression and anxiety and could have tried to guess which situation had triggered these emotions. Or, I could assume that I was destined to this disorder based on certain chemicals in my brain. Either way, it’s not anything I have ever wanted to dig up and conquer. I rather cope and work through it. But that is the biggest problem. Depression is not about getting out of the mud, pulling up your boot straps and moving on. Depression is debilitating if not dealt with from outside sources. If this means medication so be it; if this means therapy so be it.

I thought I had come to a point in my journey where I needed to unload some of the things that triggered this particular attack. Money, kids, work, marriage, eating right, getting to the gym were all things that were on my mind. Were these the things causing my anxiety? How could I change my situation and inability to cope for the better? Well, I couldn’t give away the kids or quit my marriage, and I needed money to eat - so, that left the gym. I told myself that I would just take a break from the gym — a summer break — and would start again when the kids went back to school. This would give me a few more bucks in my wallet and would free up time for

I had been picked as the Member of the Month. Really? But I was going to break up with the gym. I was about to put my membership on hold for the rest of the summer.

family and work. So a break it was. That was my plan for getting through the attack. Would I miss my friends? Yes. Would I miss feeling awesome after a workout? Yes. Would I miss feeling strong lifting over 250 pounds? Yes. Would I miss some of the most inspirational people I know? Yes. Would I miss the constant accountability? Yes. The day I decided to quit the gym, it was going to be the start of my recovery. Except that once I made the decision, I received a text from them the same day! I was so shocked with the text I couldn’t even respond to it. It said, “Can you send me your Member of the Month questionnaire again? You won.” I had won — I had been picked as the Member of the Month. Really? But I was going to break up with the gym. I was about to put my membership on hold for the rest of the summer. Did I deserve this award? Sure, maybe yesterday or last week, a month or six months ago. I mean, all of my gym family deserves this award. But that day I didn’t deserve it because I was quitting. I had to think about it for a minute; I had to cope with this. I couldn’t say, “No thank you. Not today, think of me again in September.” I decided that I couldn’t quit. Instead, I had to rethink my plan for recovery.

that consists of clean, healthy, whole foods is almost magical. Eating the right amounts of fats, proteins, vegetables and some carbs really works. The text from the gym reminded me that eating healthy is key.

Tea Time! Trying to lose weight? Replace diet sodas with tea!

It also reminded me that working out at the gym helps my mind. I don’t know why, and once again can only guess what happens to the chemicals in my brain when I workout. I feel physically different when I leave the gym. Before a workout, I can be cloudy and have a hard time focusing. Once my heart rate increases and the sweat starts dripping, my mind clears up. The world around me becomes a little less hazy. It also becomes a little bit more doable. With each workout, my mind continues to clear up. The text from the gym reminded me that exercise is key. Last, it reminded me that just because I love to go to gym, it is not an extracurricular activity or social hour. The gym is my medication; it is my therapy. On the day I was going to quit, I made sure I showed up ready to work instead. Because on that day, I was reminded that just because something is a lot of fun, it doesn’t mean it’s not hard work and unnecessary.

That day, I learned that through diet and exercise my coping skills could be healed. I know how this sounds. It sounds like some over-excited juicing guru who wants to liberate the world with kale. STRENGTHENING YOUR CORE IT CAN IMPACT MUCH MORE THAN YOU REALIZE BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, ACE PERSONAL TRAINER, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY MOST PEOPLE HAVE PROBABLY heard that maintaining a strong abdominal core can help prevent back pain and keep good posture. But what about other functions such as digestion, breathing, circulation and other physiological functions of the body? Having a strong core is a key to maintaining good health, but it is important to know what the core really is and the most optimal way to keep it strong.

The core is a very complex group of muscles that start from the inside of the body with the diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles and deep abdominal muscle in the front, and vertebral muscles on the back of the body. The outermost muscles of the core consist of the rectus abdominis (six-pack) muscle in front, internal and external obliques on the side of the body, and the back extensor muscles that run along the spine. Other important core muscles include the muscles of the rib cage and muscles of the hip such as the hip flexors and gluteal muscles. When in balance, all of these muscles work together to maintain a healthy body and healthy strong core. A strong diaphragm aids in increased air and oxygen, which drive most metabolic functions in the body, and proper expansion of the diaphragm aids in digestion by rhythmically massaging the intestine with each breath cycle. Taking strong, deep breaths, using the

Your Goals Are Our Priority!

Poor posture, stress and expanding waistlines can put a burden on the diaphragm and cause the muscle to weaken. People with poor breathing habits tend to practice stress breathing – taking short and shallow breaths and using the neck muscles and not expanding the diaphragm to get air. Another poor but common breathing pattern is belly breathing, which happens when the transverse abdominis muscle becomes weak, allowing the internal organs to bulge out of the abdomen, causing a large, weak abdomen, and no way for the diaphragm to find leverage with each breath cycle. When the lungs fill with air, the belly pushes outward, as the rib cage is now unable to expand. This further weakens and stretches the transverse abdomens.

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

Another side effect of the weakened transverse abdominis and diaphragm is poor digestion. Without the gentle massage of the digestive system with each breath, digestion slows down considerably which causes gas and further bloating. So how does one strengthen these two muscle groups? Exercise techniques such as Pilates and yoga tend to focus heavily on breathing and can be a good way to practice good breathing habits. Another good exercise is to focus on expanding the rib cage with each breath by drawing the tummy in and letting the ribs flare out. This can be done lying down on the back, placing one hand on the abdomen, and one hand on the rib cage. With each breath, the top hand on the rib cage should come up while the hand on the abdomen should move only slightly inward with inhalation and outward with exhalation. It is important to exhale very slowly through pursed lips to avoid hyperventilation. Strengthening these muscle groups can be a slow process, but by practicing these exercises it will have a positive effect on overall health into the future.

HEALTHY TIDBITS NEWS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY DR. WILL MIHIN

“Life is a blank canvas, and you need to throw all the paint on it you can.” ~ Danny Kaye Mental Attitude: Email-Based Interventions Improve Wellbeing. In this study, researchers found that participants who engaged with an email-based program aimed at improving their well-being experienced long-term improvements in their ability to handle stress, in their confidence in the future and in the amount of physical activity they engaged in per week. The authors concluded, “Internet-based interventions are feasible for mental health promotion and should be available for people interested in improving their psychological well-being and lifestyle. BMC Psychology, May 2016 Health Alert: Changes in Sleep Affect the Heart. Lack of sleep and an abnormal sleep cycle may increase the risk of heart disease. This study involved 26 healthy people who were restricted to five hours of sleep per night for eight days with either fixed bedtimes or bedtimes delayed by 8.5 hours on half the nights. The researchers found the changes in sleep resulted in higher daytime heart rates, with the greatest effect when sleep was both shortened and delayed. In addition, they observed that abnormal sleep patterns increased the levels of a stress

hormone called norepinephrine known to narrow blood vessels, raise blood pressure and expand the windpipe. Hypertension, June 2016 Diet: Dietary Fiber May Be Key to Successful Aging. Consuming a diet rich in fiber may be the key to aging successfully. In this study, researchers defined successful aging as reaching old age both disease-free and fully functional. They analyzed data on 1,609 adults aged 49 years and older and found that participants who had the highest intake of fiber were nearly 80 percent more likely to age successfully over a ten-year period than those with the lowest fiber intake. The Journal of Gerontology, June 2016 Exercise: Find Time for Fitness. The American Council on Exercise offers the following advice about how to squeeze in a few minutes of exercise during the day: Take a walk around the block when you get home from work, park your car a little further from your office building, take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk for ten minutes without stopping when shopping, clean your home, work in the yard, exercise during your lunch or coffee break, and ask a co-worker to join you for a quick walk.

American Council on Exercise, May 2016 Alternative Medicine: Manipulation Better than Injection for Disk-Related Neck Pain. Investigators compared the outcomes (overall improvement, pain reduction and treatment costs) of more than 100 patients with a symptomatic cervical disk herniation who were either treated with spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) or imaging-guided cervical nerve root injection blocks (CNRI). The results showed improvement in 86 percent of the patients who received SMT versus improvement in only 49 percent of the patients who received injections. The findings support the use SMT over injections blocks to treat a symptomatic cervical disk herniation. PARTNERING FOR PROGRESS IN KENYA HOPE, A “HAND UP,” AND PLUMPY’NUT

MOST TRAVELERS TO Africa return with amazing stories of grand vistas, vast wilderness, and teeming wildlife. Volunteers who visit southwest Kenya with Partnering for Progress (P4P), a Spokane, Washington based non-profit, see spectacular sights on a six-hour ride through Kenya’s Great Rift Valley to the rural villages of Kopanga/ Giribe. The valley is bordered by massive escarpments, contains a chain of volcanos and is traveled by red-cloaked Maasai tribesman. Many volunteers add a wildlife safari to their itinerary.

FEATURE STORY

Those aren’t the stories, however, that brighten the voices of P4P volunteers like Beth Sheeran, an emergency room nurse at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, who has traveled to Kenya twice. Their stories are about the wonderful people they helped and befriended — people who live in deep poverty with rampant malnutrition and illness but are warm, resilient and hardworking, and who move the visitors gifting them with a new perspective. One of Sheeran’s stories is about Mama Quinter. Blinded by the measles as a young girl, Mama Quinter can’t leave her hut without help, and it’s hard to care for her tiny malnourished twins. Mama’s husband has another wife and other children — polygamy is common in traditional Kenyan communities — and the family’s meager resources are stretched thin. Many of the poor farmers in the area support their families on $1.00 a day — less than we might leave in the tip jar at Starbucks after buying a $4.00 latte. Despite these difficulties, Mama is upbeat and thankful for her family. You can’t help but smile at her joyous nature in a video where she holds her incredibly cute babies, Quinter Tausi and Princess Taiwan and says, “God blessed me with two children.”

skin conditions, diarrhea and HIV/AIDS. The baby who so touched their hearts didn’t survive and on the flight home, Ivers and Mainer made a commitment to help. Mainer recalls, “We gathered our friends around our dining room table and decided to start a non-profit.” In 2008, with a grassroots effort they founded Partnering for Progress. “Our fundraising attempts were things like garage sales.” P4P began sending volunteer teams of doctors, nurses, dentists, health educators and nutritionists to Kopanga and helped build a modern clinic there. Today, P4P volunteer teams visit Giribe — a village near Kopanga — twice a year. With their Kenyan health care counterparts, they provide medical and dental care at the Ogada Health Center, assess community health and exchange medical knowledge. P4P also attacks the root causes of poor health in the region with life-changing programs that battle malnutrition, award school scholarships, create clean drinking water sources and combat poverty. Rather than a one-time “hand out” of food or aid, these programs give a “hand up” that improves the long-term health — physical and economic — of the community.

While she expresses deep appreciation for the Plumpy’Nut nutritional supplement that P4P volunteers bring her babies, like so many Kenyans that P4P helps, she is looking for a “hand up, not a hand out.” Mama Quinter knows how to operate a knitting machine and dreams of someday knitting school uniform sweaters to help her family.

The organization also has a year-round presence in Kenya. Seth Okumu, P4P’s Program Manager in Giribe, coordinates P4P’s programs, assisted by another Kenyan, Charles Atha Otieno. Charles weighs babies and runs P4P’s Power of Milk program.

A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Beth Sheeran tells the story of a mother determined to help her tiny sickly baby. “One woman was hiking across the border from Tanzania just to sit in and listen to the lessons. She wanted to know how to feed her child appropriately. The people are hungry for the knowledge of how to care for their children.” Each week, the young mother trekked six miles, toting her baby in a sling, to sit with other caregivers and hear nutrition lessons to help her baby thrive—even though she wasn’t officially enrolled in P4P’s Power of Milk program.

Stacey Mainer, a nurse practitioner in Spokane, tells the story of another severely malnourished baby who inspired Stacey and her friend, Sandy Ivers, a retired teacher, to found P4P. “This poor little girl was probably the second most malnourished baby I had seen in my entire life,” remembers Stacey, who had seen many nutrition-deprived babies during her travels as a medical volunteer. “It just broke our hearts.” In 2007, Mainer, her husband Dr. Michael Mainer, Ivers and Ivers’ son Nick, volunteered at a medical clinic in Kopanga. For two weeks, they assisted Alice Kephas, a Kenyan nurse, at Kephas’s primitive understaffed clinic. The clinic had no running water and no electricity. Medical supplies were in short supply. Women delivered their babies on mats on a dirt floor. A steady stream of patients arrived with malaria, malnutrition,

The Power of Milk

Infant undernutrition causes much of the poor health and poverty in Kenya. “We see kids that are 1 or 2 years old and weigh only 8 or 9 pounds — birth weight for American kids,” Sheerhan says. “They are very vulnerable to any illness that comes along. Their brains can’t form correctly, so they can’t perform in school.”

Creating Moments of Joy

Speaker to present on enhancing the lives of those with dementia By Patty Hutchens

It is a lonely place. And for the caregivers of those who suffer from dementia, it can be overwhelming. According to the World Health Organization, 47.5 million people worldwide have dementia and there are 7.7 million newly diagnosed cases each year. But there is good news too. Through Memory Enhanced Activity, caregivers, friends and family can help those who suffer from dementia trigger their memory. On Friday, August 12, there will be a presentation at First Lutheran Church, 526 Olive Street in Sandpoint, by Jolene Brackey, author of “Creating Moments of Joy for the Person with Alzheimer’s or Dementia.” While there is no cost, registration is required for one of the two presentations, one at 9am and another at 2pm. Both presentations will last two hours. Sponsored by Luther Park, The Bridge, Hearthstone Village and Sunset Home, this presentation is sure to provide valuable information. “She was here last year and Luther Park sponsored her,” said Luther Park Marketing Manager Karla Olson. “We had a great turnout. Based on last year, three other communities were willing to help bring her back to Sandpoint.” A resident of Polson, Montana, Brackey delivers a message of hope and encouragement and provides valuable information for all whose lives intersect with one suffering from dementia. Caring for those who suffer from dementia can evoke moments of frustration and hopelessness. But by implementing some of the methods Brackey suggests, it can also be a time of joyfulness. Register by going online to www.lutherparksandpoint.org or by calling 208.265.8834. You can also check out Brackey’s website, enhancedmoments.com.

FEATURE STORY

P4P’s Power of Milk program brings hope for some of these babies, who otherwise might not survive. Twenty children are enrolled in the program at a time. Mothers and babies gather weekly at the Ogada clinic for nutrition and health lessons that help the moms fight their babies’ undernutrition. Severely malnourished babies go home with Plumpy’Nut, a nutritional supplement provided by the Kenyan government that supports rapid weight gain and can save a starving child from illness or death. The program is also social. “After the class they get a meal. It’s really fun watching all of these caregivers with their babies. They sit around on the grass eating their meal and talking and engaging with each other,” explains Mainer. “They support each other on a really personal basis. It’s like a support group!” The resourceful and entrepreneurial Kenyan caregivers even organized a “table banking” group to pool their money to buy goats. Matching funds from P4P help the families obtain goats more quickly. Each week, Charles Atha Otieno weighs the babies. Once a child reaches a normal weight for their age, they remain in the program for another six months and then graduate. When a baby graduates, P4P throws a party and presents the family with two chickens as a graduation present! This life-changing “hand up” means that the family will have eggs — a

protein source for a better diet and an income source. So far, the Power of Milk program has saved the lives of more than 35 babies. Partners in Education Beatrice, a young girl determined to get an education, is the main character in one of Stacey Mainer’s stories. Beatrice and other determined kids like her motivated P4P to start a scholarship program for kids who otherwise couldn’t attend secondary school—kids like Rose Anyona, Ephy Adhiambo and Daniel Masaga. When Mainer and Ivers first met her, Beatrice was helping in the medical clinic in Kopanga as a caregiver for several orphaned babies. She was 16-years-old and already had a child. Beatrice dreamed of going to secondary school, what we call high school, but that seemed out of the question. In Kenya it’s especially hard for girls to go to school. Ivers explains, “Often the girls won’t go to school because the families are large and only so many kids can go to school. Girls are then pressured to move on and get married.” And it’s expensive. Paying tuition of as much as $600 per year isn’t possible for families surviving on $1.00 a day.

Beatrice’s school dreams wouldn’t die. When tuition assistance was offered by the clinic where she worked, Beatrice arranged for her mother to watch her children — by then she had three. Beatrice enrolled in school and has persevered, even when donor assistance ran out, forcing her to change schools several times. Now 24-years-old, Beatrice is a senior, about to graduate fourth in her class, and hopes to go to college. Mainer says, “Beatrice’s story shows the strength and resiliency of Kenyan women, and she reminds us why it’s so important to do what we can. She is truly hope.” Each year, P4P’s scholarship program brings hope to 27 children in Kopanga/Giribe. Partnering Against Poverty Poverty is at the root of many of the problems in Kopanga/ Giribe. “Improving the economic health of the community should improve everything,” Mainer explains. “If you have more money you improve your health because you can pay to go to the doctor to get medication, pay to have clean water and a latrine, and you can pay for your child to go to high school.” In 2015, P4P began an economic development project that helps local farmers increase their income by increasing the yield of their corn crop. The pilot project gave 10 local farmers a “hand up” with seed, fertilizer and agriculture education. The farmers saw an average increase in production of 300 percent, and Eunice Adhiambo had the largest increase — her harvest increased from five bags of corn previously to 19 bags. Eunice will use the income from her extra corn to pay school tuition for her children — providing more hope for the next generation. In return for the seed and fertilizer, each farmer gave P4P a 198-pound bag of corn. The corn was sold to help fund the Power of Milk program and to award an additional school scholarship — a step towards making these programs sustainable.

Tell Your Own Stories Donations and two yearly fundraisers — an auction and a Spokane Civic Theater benefit — generate much of P4P’s funding. The 9th Annual Into Africa Auction will be held in Spokane Valley on Oct. 1, 2016. Attending this fun event supports P4P’s key initiatives like the Power of Milk. Volunteers are needed at the fundraisers and for P4P’s committees. If you have dreamed of going to Africa, you can join one of P4P’s service teams on a volunteer trip to Kenya. Doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists, teachers and engineers are needed to treat patients, teach health and nutrition classes and help with clean water and economic development projects. Even if you don’t have those specific skills, there’s a place for you on the trips — everyone has talents that can help. The volunteer trips are self-funded but are a great way to see Africa while helping people and seeing a different perspective. “There’s a saying in Kenya that I love. Americans have all the watches, but Kenyans have all the time,” says Linda HagenMiller, head of P4P’s Communications Committee. “We are always in such a hurry to get things done. They are a little more laid back. They want to talk to you, get to know you, and learn about your family, children and work.” Make a donation or volunteer, and give a “hand up” to Kenyans like Mama Quinter, Beatrice, Eunice Adhiambo and the young mother from Tanzania. Once you visit Kenya, you’ll come back with your own stories about the amazing people who do so much with so little. To learn more, visit P4P’s website at partneringforprogress.org. UNIQUE DREAM HOMES RETHINKING YOUR HOME By Jani Gonzalez The American public has gotten increasingly creative about its ideal dream home. Creativity and innovation are everywhere. The novelty we are seeing in the media is perhaps a form of rebellion against widespread suburban sprawl and McMansions. Or it is an escape from our increasingly connected culture. Those looking to build or simply to dream need not go far. Click on the television, and you are bound to find an episode about treehouses, majestic cabins, mansions on wheels or some other unique and non-traditional abode. The choices open up the imagination – even if it’s to change up your current home. There is also a plethora of dream home magazines. Small or large, the ultimate place to call home is in the eye of the homeowner. Today’s dream homes come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes, with a surprising budget too.

There’s something to be said for simplicity

CABIN OASIS The thought of a cabin conjures up a makeshift wooden single room in the forest. Have you seen the penny honoring Lincoln’s cabin? Customized log homes have come a long way from that one-room stereotypical cabin. Historically, cabins have been used seasonally for vacation, but Americans are increasingly calling it their primary residence. Styles include the traditional Craftsman, which is smaller, more traditional but with an intricate floor plan and exposed wood trim. The Swiss/ German Colonial Cottage is larger with exposed beams and has a much more detailed decorative exterior and interior. The Adirondack is more like a lodge because of its open floor plan. It’s very classic and incorporates the use of native materials. From rustic to majestic – it’s obvious that the cabin has grown up.

Floating Fortress A home on the water is another way to live within nature’s tranquility and gain a deeper appreciation for one’s surroundings. Prospective buyers should factor in dock slip fees, taxes, insurance and maintenance. Also, you won’t be able to park close to your home, so accept that you’ll be carrying your belongings more. You’ll also need to confirm that your floating foundation is sound. Logistics aside, living in a floating home can make it seem like you’re always on vacation. Homeowners can fish off their deck (or through a window!) or change their scenery by getting towed to a new location.

Treehouse Hideout

The customized treehouses of today are a grown-up’s version of the ultimate hideout. If you’ve ever watched “Treehouse Masters” on Animal Planet, you know there are a host of logistics to building a treehouse. Most important are the trees that will support the home. Treehouse dreamers will likely want a second opinion to verify the trees they’ve selected can carry the weight load of the house. From there, the design process can make dreams come true – from whimsical forts and castles to modern-looking homes lifted considerably from the ground. And the adventure only begins when the house is finished. Treehouse dwellers live at the center of nature, swaying with the trees and getting a bird’s eye view of it all.

m a e r D Tiny homes are growing in popularity as not only a dream home but a way to a better, simpler lifestyle. The homes are between 100 and 400 feet and are often built on trailers because of code regulations. Living in a tiny home is in direct opposition to the direction of the average American house which is up to 2,600 square feet. Most dwellers of tiny homes live with minimal debt, no mortgage and have more personal and retirement savings. Not only is a tiny home more economical, it’s more environmentally friendly too because it uses less energy. If the thought of living within your means sounds simple and appealing, a tiny home might be your dream home and new lifestyle.

Luxury Mansion Mansions are where one can have it all for the right price. Whether you buy new or old, mansions come with a large menu of amenities: swimming pools, tennis courts, bowling alleys, home theaters and spiral stair cases – these might just be a few of your favorite things. It’s where you can have a dedicated room for each of your activities. Mansions can be in the middle of the city or the country – it’s your choice. These homes are the trophies for deep pockets and are a display of pure wealth. They are the homes of the “Rich and Famous,” but a few ingenious individuals have become caretakers of second homes, and are able to “have it all” in return for their work.

The Lake Effect...

SERENE Sanctuary

Waterfront homes give you the best of two worlds: property and access to water. If you’re contemplating a home with a body of water for a front yard, it’s best to work with a realtor who is well-versed in this type of property. You’ll need to know the quality of the house since waterfront weather is harsher than in other areas. Also think about how your lifestyle will benefit. You may be in a more remote area which may or may not suit you. As with other specialty homes, there is a cost to customization, and you need to educate yourself to how you can access the water and what changes you may do to the property.

CONTAINER HOMES Living inside the box By Jani Gonzalez

The dream home is changing. Gone are the pie-in-the-sky options of a mansion on a hill. Those are still being dreamt of and built, but let’s face it, not many of us will ever afford that quintessential house on the hill. More and more, however, people are finding creative ways to get their ideal homes. In recent years, with a new interest in repurposing and being mindful of the environment, shipping containers are being used in a variety of ways to build small and large homes. More people are considering using them as a unique and relatively inexpensive way to customize their home.

In the past decade, however, the use of shipping containers has increased in part because of an ongoing surplus of containers available in the U.S. It is estimated that 90 percent of our goods are delivered from overseas via cargo shipping containers. Because the U.S. imports more than it exports, the containers have become abundant in supply. That surplus has made it an affordable building material. Its frugality combined with a cultural drift to repurposing items and being mindful of waste – whether it be wasted space or building refuse – has made shipping containers an alternative home affordable to many.

A brief history of shipping containers

Tom Woods, author of the blog, “Container Home Plans,” thinks the recent interest in container homes is possibly out of environmental and financial reasons. “I think there are many reasons why people are opting (for) this type of home, including both financial and sustainable. But fundamentally, I see it as a movement by people who are both environmentally conscious but also seeking financial independence through more affordable building materials,” he said.

For many of us, we don’t think much about shipping containers, but according to the blog, “Container Home Plans,” before the 1950s, the transportation and delivery of goods was laborious and slow. Malcom McLean saw an opportunity to change that and is credited with the concept of the shipping container. His containers could transport goods by sea and be immediately loaded onto trains, thus reducing the time it took to deliver cargo. Two decades later, people were already devising of ways to use them for other reasons. In 1987, Phillip Clark was the first to file a patent to use shipping containers as building material, but other builders and architects had already had similar ideas. The first recorded structure built from a shipping container was in 1998 in South Africa, called Simon’s Town High School Hostel. It’s a huge structure built to house 200 students, and it’s still standing, proving the longevity of the containers as building material. In 2006, the popularity of this new building material was showcased by architect Peter DeMaria for a home in Redondo Beach, California. The home, as many others, is a hybrid of traditional construction with the stacked containers attached. The house stands white and glorious and is comparable to any modern luxury home. Its sleek modernity hides the obviousness of the containers.

Designing the container home Building a home out of shipping containers is considered a strong and quick way to construct a home. Costs, of course, will vary depending on the number of containers used and their arrangement, but a home could cost less than $100,000. These steel boxes generally come in two standard sizes: They are either 20 feet or 40 feet long 8 feet wide and 8-feet 6-inches high. There are two routes for future homeowners: purchase your own containers and hire contractors or hire a company that specializes in these homes. You can purchase a container from a dealer. Prices range between $2,100 and $5,800, and you can purchase them new or used. When hiring contractors, they should be familiar with shipping containers and know that you’ll have to comply with local regulations and permits. Although deemed faster and more cost-effective,

it doesn’t mean it’s meant for everyone. Placing a container on top of a newly poured concrete foundation can conceivably happen in one day. However, building a home is still a fulltime project even if you hire professionals, and there are always details that will arise during construction. You’ll still need to budget. It’s advised to have a working budget plus an emergency one as there are always unforeseen costs with any building project. Next, location is probably one of the bigger factors to consider. A shipping container makes it easier to build a home in almost any location, however, you still need to consider the feasibility of building with the containers. Also, are they acceptable where you want to live? Will you live on or off the grid? Consider these points too as you search for property. You’ll also need to consider your blueprint and stick to it. Changing your mind about room dimensions after construction begins will cost you. There are several concerns particular to shipping container homeowners. One of the primary concerns, if not purchasing a new, unused container, is what did it transport? You can inspect your containers by checking for corrosion, holes and bad odors. These could be indicators of previous chemical loads. There’s also been some concern about the chemicals used to treat the flooring for the containers to withstand shipping overseas. Homeowners can remove the floor boards, tile over them or use a sealer to prevent contamination. The decision may ultimately depend on your budget too. Shipping containers are strong and built to withstand harsh weather. However, if your property is on a high location, you should consider building in noise reduction capabilities to damper the sounds of the wind. Insulation and proper ventilation are other factors to include in your design. You must avoid anything that will trap moisture as condensation will create mold inside the containers. Using shipping containers as an alternative building source will certainly allow you to create a novel home from the rest in your surrounding area. Do your proper research online and with the experts to gain ideas about what to do and not. Being innovative with building materials and design is a sign of the times, making a custom home accessible to more prospective homeowners.

The RefUrbished Bell Camper

New or vintage, these trailers look like silver spaceships on the road. Regardless of their sizes, they’re not known for having much storage, but they have a reputation for being lightweight and durable. If you are looking to rehab a vintage trailer, be mindful of the era and whether parts are available. Also, note if there is still a pipe frame and if it needs modification, and make sure there is a holding tank for waste water. Although they are lightweight, make sure your vehicle can tow it. New ones keep getting lighter and appear more akin to the airships that initially inspired their design.

We are in an age of getting what we want without spending a fortune. So it’s no surprise there is a do-it-yourself (DIY) trend to refurbish vintage trailers. The Bell Travel Trailers, popular in the 60s and 70s, are getting a second chance at the road. These tiny trailers are best for the lone traveler or two. Because they are vintage trailers, they aren’t readily available and will take some hunting, but that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? Keep in mind that these trailers are likely in need of repair. Before purchasing, check the siding, frame and electrical wires before even thinking about the aesthetic changes you want to make. Give it your best inspection for mold and leaks before moving ahead. The refurbishing project will leave you gratified and your adventures waiting for you.

The Airstream Camper 88

The Teardrop Camper

RVs basically encompass any mobile living unit and include motorhomes, travel trailers and camper vans. Class A motorhomes are the kings of the road. These are the ones that resemble tour buses. Class B motorhomes are campervans and are actually the smallest of the classes. Class Cs look like a van with a longer camper fitted on top. As the economy slowly strengthens, so do the sales of these recreational vehicles (RV). Instead of purchasing a vacation home, more people are opting for a second home on wheels. RVs range from being simply a space to sleep to luxurious motorhomes with all the amenities of a regular house. And for some, buying a RV is the way they’ll transition to retirement or financial independence.

The Luxury RV These are the smallest trailers and may just be a place to lay your head down at night. These trailers are typically between 4 feet wide and 6 feet long and go up to 10 feet long. They’re lighter and easier to tow and park without needing a larger vehicle for it. There’s been a resurgence of these models lately, and there are sleek designs gracing the road with aluminum or wooden sheathing. Some DIYers are even making their own from plans or a kit. For the babies of the camper family, many teardrop enthusiasts feel they can do more without spending a fortune. And, you’ll also become a de facto member of the teardrop trailer community, so look out for trailer gatherings around the nation, even the globe.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

BY COLIN ANDERSON

Tranquility in the Water THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT the sound of rushing water that soothes us to our core. A beachfront oasis next to the ocean, the waves subtly crashing against the shore helping us fall into a deep sleep. Camping along a mountain stream with its steady trickle helping to mute the sound of sticks crackling and animals scurrying around the campsite. Think of the last time you went to a spa for a massage or other treatment. Was there a water feature near the entrance? It’s one of the most natural sounds to help our minds calm thought as we start to turn off stresses of work, family and finances. The plethora of rivers and streams across the Northwest give us opportunities to enjoy one of the most tranquil of water activities; casting a fly in hopes of seeing a fish rise. Casting a fly is unlike any other form of fishing. The cast must be delicate, yet sent with enough force to reach the eddy or rock

on the opposite side of the river. Rhythmic motion while keeping the rod at ten o’clock and two o’clock. And when you make that perfect cast with the fly delicately dropping to the water, it’s an amazing feeling, almost as amazing as bringing in a large trout on a lightweight rod. The diversity of our rivers is vast across the Northwest. Western Montana is well known for Blue Ribbon waters holding monster Browns and Rainbows. Anglers across North Idaho seek out feisty Westslope cutthroat and in the fall aggressive Dolly Varden or Bull Trout. Huge runs of Steelhead challenge anglers in Central Idaho, the Washington coast and the rivers of West and Central Oregon. Each species requires varying tactics, and if you’re new to the sport, the best place to begin the learning process is your local fly shop.

Fly shops are run by people who’ve made their favorite activity into a business and most are eager to share their passion for the sport with those looking to get involved. As with many sports, you can gear up as technical and expensive as you want, but looking like you just got done modeling for a Cabela’s or L.L. Bean catalog won’t help you with the most important part of fly fishing − the cast. Rod/Reel: Fly rods can cost more than a thousand dollars, but there are plenty of wellconstructed beginner and intermediate rods in the $200 to $300 range. This is your most important purchase as a good rod gives you control of the presentation and is the key component to accurate casting. Until you’ve progressed into an every weekend angler, a reel is mostly just a reel, so put your budget toward the rod, and worry about the reel later on. If you’re going after Rainbow, Brown, cutthroat, or bookies, a 4 or 6-weight fly rod will probably be your best option, but let the fly shop owners know in what rivers you’ll be fishing will help them narrow down a weight and length that will be right for you.

Flies: One of the trickier parts of learning to fly fish is getting the hatch right. There’s not a more frustrating sight than watching fish rise toward your fly only to turn away just as they are about to break the surface. Trout eat bugs, and different bugs hatch at different times of the season. Some days the fish are looking for tiny gnats to nibble on and others they’re gorging themselves on jumbo hoppers or mayflies. It’s a good idea to have a variety of bugs as well as larger and smaller sizes of each. Local shops will let you know what hatch is currently happening and can point you to what bugs to use. When out of the water, try to snatch what’s buzzing around you, and pick a fly that closely resembles it. Gear: Hat, sunglasses, pliers and a multi-tool are must haves. Polarized lenses will help cut glare off the water allowing you to see your fly much easier. A vest for carrying these things as well as flies, food, drink and net is also highly recommended. If you’re casting from a raft or drift boat, waders are unnecessary, and depending on your tolerance of cold water aren’t always necessary in the warm summer months either. Sturdy boots or river shoes that

SandpointLivingLocal.com

can get wet will help you navigate to and from the river and keep your balance on slippery rocks. Casting classes or demonstrations are usually available at your local fly shop. Once you’ve got the pattern down, practice at home in the yard. Set up a small target at varying distances, and see if you can land your fly on a Frisbee or dinner plate. Move your position to under trees and near shrubs as you will likely encounter these things along the banks of your favorite river, and it’s good to practice so you don’t spend all day digging your hooks out of the brush. While there are countless rivers to explore across the west, perhaps you’re not looking to spend the entire week fishing, but a day or two on the water over a family vacation. The following are great vacation spots that give you close access to excellent nearby waters. Montana: Kalispell/Whitefish: On the doorstep of Glacier National Park, a beautiful area filled with

Relax incredible scenery. Golf, hiking, huckleberry picking, and plenty of logging and railroad history to explore. Bozeman: Just 45 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, Bozeman blends high end shopping and dining with cowboys and ranchers. Several of Montana’s blue ribbon trout streams lie within 90 minutes of downtown. Missoula: Farmer’s markets, biking, paddling and a laid back vibe greet you in Missoula. Those who don’t want to fish can plop themselves in a tube and float the Clark Fork or Blackfoot while you chase huge Browns to the south in the Bitterroot Valley. Idaho: Coeur d’Alene: Relax in a vacation rental along Lake Coeur d’Alene or Hayden Lake, and enjoy small town charm. Try the Coeur d’Alene River or one of dozens of mountain lakes that dot the peaks. Take a trip over to the Shadowy St. Joe for amazing cutthroat action with few homes and barely a speck of a town along its banks. McCall: Another Idaho lake town that offers nature in

any direction. Steelhead runs heat up in September in the rivers surrounding town and gives you a chance to reel in a monster fish. Washington: Longview: A great base of operations for visiting the Oregon coast towns of Astoria and Cannon Beach as well as a short drive into Portland for big city experience. The Cowlitz River is world renowned for its spring Chinook fishing and summer steelhead runs but fish are abundant year round. San Juan Islands: A beautiful place to island hop and explore small and quaint communities, kayak and hike out to incredible ocean vistas. All the surrounding water means ample angling opportunities. Parking yourself in a stream and pitting yourself against a picky fish will test your patience but even if the fish aren’t biting, the sound of the water rushing around you is sure to help put you at peace. A new challenge in each body of water and season awaits and with each cast you are hopefully developing a love for this tranquil lifelong activity.

Food & Drink Recipe

COCO-NUTS! POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR HEALTH

WHILE COCONUT MAY be a staple in the diets of many who live in the tropics and subtropics, it may not be as familiar to those in our area. But its versatility, which includes food, water and even cosmetics, has caused coconuts in many forms to increase in popularity. Grown on large palm trees that can produce up to 75 fruits per year, coconuts are widely known for their use in cooking. For cooking, the white part of the seed, known as the coconut meat, is what is used, fresh or dried, in confections and desserts. The seed of the coconut is what is used for frying, cooking and making margarine. It is the unique combination of fatty acids in coconuts that can have a significant positive impact on one’s health. Some of those benefits include fat loss and increased brain function. The saturated fats contained in coconut oil are not the same as you would find in foods such as cheese or steak.

For anyone who is trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, chocolate is one of the first things to cut from their diet. But don’t be so quick to do so! It has been shown that dark chocolate, in moderation, can be a healthy ingredient to your diet.

The benefits of coconuts have been demonstrated in areas of the world where they have been consumed for generations. For instance, in some areas in the South Pacific over 60 percent of the calories consumed are from coconuts. And the good news is there is little evidence of heart disease in those places that consume a significant amount of coconuts.

Research shows that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in chocolate may lower your risk of heart attack and stroke considerably. So next time you crave a piece of dark chocolate, don’t be afraid to indulge!

It’s a given that obesity is one of the biggest health issues that currently face our world. It’s an epidemic. Coconuts can help. It has been found that medium chain triglycerides that are found in coconut oil have shown to increase one’s 24-hour energy expenditure by up to five-percent, which can lead to significant weight loss. So what are you waiting for? Whether it is coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk or just plain coconut, explore the benefits!

WALK FOR H.O.P.E. Raising awareness for suicide prevention and support. By Melody Vanhorn.

SUICIDE. IN RECENT YEARS TEEN SUICIDE has become the third leading cause of death in the United States. and the numbers of those lost just keeps growing. But suicide doesn’t just affect those who’ve passed on, it also has a major impact on those who are left behind. The family and friends who’ve lost a loved one are often left with a deep hole in their lives along with so many unanswered questions. Jennifer Wyman is someone who knows just how hard the struggle is. In November of 2015 Jennifer experienced the sudden loss of her daughter, Madi, to suicide. While dealing with the pain, Jennifer came to realize how much her daughter’s passing had affected the entire community. She started to brainstorm on ways that she could help bring awareness about suicide to the community while also help bring some healing to those who have been left behind to deal with the loss. She started working closely with her friends Lisa Turner and Jennifer Hauck on ways to bring something into the community when one of Madi’s close friends, Curtis Hauck, came up with the idea of a walk. On the evening of September 4, the community is invited to join together as they walk the Long Bridge at 5pm to help bring healing and awareness of suicide related deaths to the community. Using the word hope as an acronym for, “hold on pain ends,” Walk for H.O.P.E. is here to help others embrace hope, as they not only work towards healing lives but saving lives as well. For more information about the event or to help support the cause please visit their facebook page, Walk for Hope, or email walkforhopesandpoint@gmail.com.
