PUBLISHER Christmas All Year Long There is a special feeling in the air. People are cheerful. Stores are buzzing with activity. Christmas music is lightening the mood. We look forward to setting time aside to gather with friends and family, cherishing those relationships that mean the most to us. We celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Many always look forward in anticipation to this time of year. So why not make it a point to live with Christmas in our hearts all year long? Each month set some time aside for family traditions. Whether it is as simple as a family dinner out or staying home on a Friday night and having a game night with the kids, tradition is something that our children can look back on with fond memories. You can even take it a step further and integrate tradition with the act of giving. After all, nothing brings happiness to one’s heart like knowing you have made a positive difference in someone else’s life. Maybe take your family to volunteer once a month at a local soup kitchen. Or take time to shop and drop some food to the food bank. Possibly your church is in need of some volunteer services. Whatever you decide, I am sure with a commitment to establish year long traditions, you will feel Christmas in your heart all year long. A very Merry Christmas from those of us at Living Local. Take time to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Reason for the Season! Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

Nothing says Christmas like the smell of homemade cookies. It transcends us back in time to when mom or grandma would spend hours in the kitchen baking in anticipation of the holidays. Take time this Christmas to create some traditions, whether it’s baking Christmas cookies or going caroling, make it an old-fashioned Christmas.

The Intentional Marriage COMMITTING TO A MUTUAL, LIFELONG JOURNEY
BY JOY PETERSON
Every relationship has an underlying “contract,” conscious or unconscious. In most cases, couples allow it to be drafted by default; a precedent set on unexamined behaviors, expectations and assumptions. Early in a relationship, people are reluctant to confront minor irritants and issues. As a relationship becomes committed, patterns, assumptions and expectations are already established, without scrutiny and mutual agreement. An intentional marriage commits to a mutual voyage lasting a lifetime, come what may. It is a journey toward understanding yourselves and one another, honoring the best of what already exists in your marriage, and celebrating what is exceptional in your intentions and your actions. You concentrate on what you do well and identify what you want to do differently. A lasting marriage is based on courage, selfknowledge and perseverance. It leads to a life built on a consciously designed foundation of shared love, values and spiritual practices. Partnership is at the core of a great marriage. A lush and lively marriage requires a clear understanding of partnership – which marriage is in the eyes of the law – and mastering the skills that make partnerships successful. The collateral benefits of a partnership marriage has far-reaching effects. When you develop these skills for the sake of marriage, you become more effective parents, have better relationships in the workplace and every area of life. Partners committed to equality in marriage
16
LIVINGLOCAL
model it to their children and experience multiple benefits. The richness provided by mutual respect for both masculine and feminine perspectives on issues and decisions within marriage and family are not duplicated in any other setting or institution in our lives. In order for the future to hold the promise of a better world, our sons and daughters need to be equal partners, not only in marriage, but equal voice and opportunity in career, in governance, in religion, in education, in the workplace and in the law. Sooner or later marriage exposes your wounds, your losses, your flaws and your longings. A partnership marriage creates a safe and trusting environment that facilitates growth and development in both partners. It increases your capacity for love and forgiveness. You learn to push beyond your capacity for selflessness and constancy. You never truly realize your emotional depths until you are in a relationship that is more important to you than your own life. Building a life with another and bearing children takes you to the very heart of your being where the seeds of the wisdom dwell if you surrender everything to love. Joy Evans Peterson, M.A. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Author of “22 Myths of Divorce” and “Discovering A Dynamic Marriage.” DiscoveringDynamicMarriage.com.

Decorate on a Dime
If you love the holiday season like me, you’ve probably been planning your décor since the week after Halloween. At our house, the holidays are a time for lights, laughter and celebration. My husband often tells me he loves our house at Christmas time because I love decorating. This is a joyful time of year for our family, so I want our home to reflect that joy.
MAKE IT A FAMILY TRADITION
I’ve built up a good selection of Christmas decorations over the years, acquired from my mom, my mother-in-law and several years of married life. But like a comfortable sweater, some of them were starting to look a little worn and hodge-podge. Then I discovered Goodwill. Their holiday décor season has rapidly become a muchanticipated event for my family. Even my husband gets into it!
BY HEATHER ALEXANDER
You too can create a beautiful and uniquely you holiday look for your home for a fraction of the cost by shopping at local second hand and thrift stores. Here are my top tips to get you started:
Memories
Pick a color scheme
Some of my fondest memories are of the laughter and joy of decorating together and picking out our decorations together too.
Do you have a color scheme in your everyday home décor, such as your furnishings and curtains? Select a palette of shades that complements those colors. Your décor will have a more unified appearance if you choose a central color scheme. If you like southwest colors, stick with earthy tones of tan,
18
LIVINGLOCAL
green, blue and turquoise. If you like country chic, think of subtle pastels, white and ivory. I myself love the vintage Christmas look, as those colors blend well with my furniture and wall colors. So I select decorations that are in more muted burgundy, green and ivory, rather than the vibrant 1950s Coca-Cola red. Plan your theme You want to feel comfortable in your home and have it reflect your personality and style. Do you like the Country Chic look? Do you have affinity for a country cabin or an elegant modern apartment? Pick a central theme and decorate around that. Only pick up items that blend well together. For example, if you like the old-world Christmas look, stay away from mirrored balls and tinsel trees. Don’t stop at your entryway It’s easy and quick to just decorate your entryway. But once you step into the rest of your home, you have left the holiday merriment at the door. Choose a few pieces and some small touches to carry your décor throughout your home. Involve the whole family My husband and kids really enjoy decorating with me for the holidays. Some of my fondest memories are of the laughter and joy of decorating together and picking out our decorations
WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015

together too. We look through the boxes every year, and reminisce about where we got certain decorations. My kids definitely know which decorations are “theirs” and belong to their rooms. Keep it simple The adage “less is more” really is true. The holidays aren’t about extravagance. If you flock your home with too much décor, it feels overwhelming. Again, pick a few key pieces and decorate around those. Then sit back, dim the lights, light a few candles, pop some popcorn and enjoy a beautiful, and inexpensive, holiday season. Save your money for those things that are really important, like helping a neighbor, making someone smile and creating memories. As I look at my stack of boxes in the garage in preparation for holiday decorating this weekend, I realize that I have acquired many of those decorations at a fraction of the cost simply by shopping at Goodwill. In addition to assuaging my wallet-guilt, shopping at Goodwill has added extra joy to my holidays because I know that I am supporting important programs in my community. Over the years, I have met many individuals whose lives were changed because they received job training, employment assistance, housing, or other services through Goodwill.

In either case, you’ll want to review the following areas: • Investment information — It’s a good idea to let your grown children know where you (and your spouse, if still living) keep your investments and what sort of investments and retirement accounts you own, such as your IRA, 401(k), and so on. You should also provide your children with the name of your financial advisor. And talk to your parents about their investments. You might think that this could be challenging topic to bring up, but you might be surprised at their willingness to talk. • Estate planning documents — Comprehensive estate planning can Member SIPC involve a variety of legal documents, such as a will, a living trust, power of attorney, etc. If you have already created these documents, you need to share both their location and their intent with your grown children, who will be active players in carrying out your estate plans. The same is true with your elderly parents — try to encourage
LIVINGLOCAL
them to share all their estate-planning documents with you, especially if they will be counting on you for their care. • Names of professional advisors — As you put together your estate plans, you will likely need to work with a team of financial, tax and legal advisors. Make sure your grown children know the names of these professionals and how to contact them. Similarly, seek the same information from your parents. • Wishes for future living arrangements — It’s certainly possible that you will be able to live independently your whole life. On the other hand, you may eventually need some type of long-term care, such as that provided in a nursing home or an assisted-living residence. Let your children know what your feelings are about such a possibility, and what preparations you have made. And try to elicit the same information from your own parents. • Funeral or burial instructions — Admittedly, you can probably find topics that are more pleasant to discuss than funeral plans. Yet, if you make your own burial or cremation plans in advance, and possibly even prepay for them, you will be taking a tremendous burden off the shoulders of your loved ones, who won’t be forced to make difficult decisions — or scramble for money at short notice — during a highly emotional time in their lives. Once again, you’ll also want to learn about your parents’ desires for their final arrangements, and what steps they may have already taken in this area. By holding a family meeting about these issues today, you can avoid a lot of stress and misunderstandings in the future. So bring out the coffee and cookies — and start talking.

MAXIMIZE YOUR INSURANCE DOLLARS
Ca
Nearly 1.5 million families lose their homes to foreclosure each year because of unpaid medical bills, according to an article published in the Health Matrix: Journal of Law Medicine.
Not all that surprising when you consider that the average cost of a single day’s worth of inpatient hospital care is more than $1,600. “Often enough, health insurance will not cover all of the related expenses in treating certain diseases,” explains Polly Galbraith, medical director at Assurant Employee Benefits – a small-business insurance provider. To avoid paying more for less coverage, it’s essential to compare insurance options. There are, however, some other ways to maximize your insurance dollars. Make the most of your insurance dollars with these tips: • Understand the benefits and tools available at work. Next time open enrollment rolls around at your place of employment, take stock of all the benefits your employer offers. Even if you pay some or all of the premium, you may have access to valuable plans that can help fill gaps in existing coverages. Many carriers provide calculators and other tools that can help determine what plans benefit you the most, and what level of coverage is appropriate. • Don’t forget to protect your income. Most people fail to contemplate what they would do if unable to work and earn a paycheck. Serious illnesses or accidents may not occur with high
frequency, but the ramifications can be significant with impacts far beyond your health, like your livelihood. The Council for Disability Awareness provides a helpful educational tool to evaluate your readiness in the event of accident, injury or sickness at www.defendyourincome.org.
• Consider supplemental insurance. Many of your day-to-day expenses are not covered by your health insurance. Things like child care costs, transportation expenses and lost work time often catch people off guard when their income is unexpectedly disrupted. Medical insurance covers expenses like doctor visits and medicine, but not those day-to-day things that make your life run. Generally, supplemental coverages like critical illness, cancer and accident pay a fixed sum upon the event, which you can use for whatever you want, including those “other” expenses.
Don’t forget to add to your Christmas list: Health insurance open enrollment deadline December 15th for January 1st effective date!! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!
• Purchase through work for savings and convenience. When you purchase coverage at work, you benefit from group insurance rates that are typically more affordable. Many employers will also collect and remit premiums to the carrier for you, through payroll deduction. Check with other groups you belong to, like labor unions, business organizations, student associations and other special-interest groups, that may also offer coverage at discounted rates. • Take it with you. Don’t forget to look at options that include portability, the ability to take the coverage with you should you leave your job.

Beam Me Up! COLD LASER THERAPY FOR PETS BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL Cold laser is a non-invasive procedure that uses light to increase blood circulation. At a specific wavelength, laser light stimulates cells to “do” things quicker than normal, like decrease pain and inflammation and speed up healing. Cold laser therapy treats the surface of the skin without burning it, while hot laser treatments go deeper (and often burn or cut tissue). Often called Class IV laser therapy, it has been around for over 40 years. It has been tested successfully on humans, and now about 20 percent of the nation’s companion animals are benefiting from the treatment. Therapy covers a wide variety of conditions including acute and chronic injuries, sprains, and strains, arthritis, ear, skin and back problems. Really, patients who suffer from any combination of pain, inflammation or slow healing wounds benefit from laser therapy. Interestingly, through the release of endorphins, cold laser treatments also decrease stress. Laser therapy appointments often provide a relaxing effect, perhaps the patients actually enjoy the treatment (remember laser can reduces stress by producing endorphins!)! At our clinic we use a room large enough for the family to gather and often a mat or blanket is provided for the patient to lie or stand on. A typical session lasts between 3 to 20 seconds.
22
LIVINGLOCAL
The appointments usually take between 15 and 20 minutes and are very affordable. Freshly closed incisions often require a mere single treatment. Other laser applications for chronic conditions treat diseases like ear infections, skin bruising, back pain, arthritis and neurologic problems. They often require multiple treatments, depending on the severity and chronicity (how long the disease has been around). We often base the number and interval of therapy sessions on how the patient responds. Of course the symptomatic relief and healing response is primary, but laser therapy’s secondary effects are numerous and include medication reduction. Besides the stress relief, the treatments themselves are pain free. It’s not really alternative therapy, instead we consider it a type of integrative approach. Cold laser therapy can “beam up” patients to a higher quality of life, as well as the life of their surrounding family! Dr. Dawn Mehra, North Idaho Animal Hospital 320 S. Are You Ready for Your New Puppy? Doing your research and preparing your home are keys to success Many families buy puppies during the holidays, only to become overwhelmed. Bringing a dog home can be a 15-year commitment, not to mention a huge financial and emotional responsibility. Many families do not realize how much work raising a puppy entails. Sadly, many holiday puppies end up in shelters come January. Animals can bring joy into their human’s lives, but only if people are ready to keep a canine companion healthy and safe. Here are some tips for anyone considering getting a puppy for the holidays: • Make sure that a dog will fit into your lifestyle. Do you have the money to pay for food, routine and emergency vet bills and training costs? Will you be home to care for your puppy? If not, will you be able to find or hire a sitter? Can you handle paw prints on your floors and dog hair on your furniture? If you answer “no” to any of these questions, you might want to get a lower-maintenance pet instead. • Puppy-proof your home before you bring Fido home. Puppies will chew on anything in reach. Some people hide or bundle loose cables and wires as a preventative measure. Place houseplants out of puppyreach, and keep floors clear. • Make sure your puppy has a kennel or a bed as it will need its own space. • Do your research before getting your puppy. Many pet stores are fronts for puppy mills, where ill dogs face horrendous abuse. Consider adopting from an animal shelter; one out of every four shelter dogs is a purebred animal. If you really don’t want to adopt, look for a reputable breeder who will let you see their breeding facilities and meet your puppy’s parents.

I may have glimpsed the next Meryl Streep or Tom Hanks today, transporting the audience from a borrowed classroom into the emotional depths of a character. I may have seen the work of the next technical theatre genius whose skill will win an Oscar or a Tony Award. And I did all this by attending the District Drama Competition held November 21 at Sandpoint High School. In this all-state event, students with talent, tenacity, courage and creativity perform in multiple acting categories including pantomime and musical theatre, and present projects for Tech Theatre in make-up, costume, set design and props. Skimming by us with a cheerful greeting is the event organizer Jeannette Hunter, the Sandpoint High School drama teacher whom Hall describes as, “Awesome! in her ability to coordinate such a massive endeavor. A large roomful of judges listens to instructions with a gravity normally reserved for juries being addressed before they sequester themselves and arrive at a verdict. They are parents and community members, many with theatrical backgrounds, who volunteer their time for this event. Each one is tasked with completing an evaluation ballot for each performance. The judges take their job as seriously as if lives depended on it, because in a way,

they do. The performances are ranked as to the top three within every round, and rated as superior, excellent, average or (rarely) not prepared. Judges are encouraged to write constructive critiques as well as compliments because, when these influential forms are given to the students, they take them in hand and take them to heart. The performances are extraordinary to observe. The students rise above their youthful personas and become disciplined, organized participants aware of every rule and point of order. Their presentations are stringently governed by rules that control timing, specify the elements of the scene right down to the number of chairs that may be used by the actors, and protect impartiality through a participant numbering system minus school and student names. Utterly businesslike, they identify their scene and promptly arrange the skeletal “set” of chairs and perhaps a prop or two. Then they step right into their scene at full emotional pitch. The transition is radical and demonstrates endless rehearsal and hard, hard work. When it concludes, the judge may thank them but must remain unreadably neutral. The students replace the chairs, gather their props and resume their seats.
round winners perform their piece for three judges at once, judges who may not confer with each other but must decide independently. The top eight move on to the finals, again performing their piece before three judges simultaneously. “When I watched the finals last year in musical theatre, it was a coin toss as to who would win, it was all so fabulous,” Hall recalls. And it was a great moment when her son’s musical ensemble entry of West Side Story’s “Officer Krupke” came in third for the entire state.
presentations. “The fact that sometimes one judge will rate them high and another perhaps won’t, or maybe one year they go to state and another year they don’t, will prepare them for the ups and downs of life,” she said.
The competition is part of the Idaho High School Sports and Activities Association. Just as sports instill character strengths, speech and drama and debate are life-building activities, as well. Hall has a towering respect for how hard the students work. “I see this competition as a life skill benefit,” explains Hall. The time invested in preparing to present a scene in front of poker-faced judges is time well-invested toward public speaking prowess and persuasive
And the results are (drum roll, please): Sandpoint High School took third in the district! (Places are determined by the number of first, second and third place finishers in each category.) There will be 21 students heading to state this year, several of them double-entered. Gina’s son, Bob, took second for his original serious piece that he wrote and performed, and she is “… so very proud of him!”
Life, indeed, is not always one spectacular vertical trajectory into the dizzying heights of success. If District Drama Competition participants one day face a temporary downturn in their projected progress, they won’t even blink.
This District Drama Competition is the second in a three-part process of local, district and state competitions. Winners will travel by bus to Idaho Falls this year and participate in a two-day process of performing their piece five times in front of nine different judges. “That is draining, especially if you have a serious emotional piece,” empathizes Hall. In the first round, the students perform their piece three times in front of three different judges. The top 16 in each category go into the semi-finals. The suspense builds as these first-

THE GIFT OF TIME Locally owned company provides a multitude of services to free up your valuable time By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Lisa Turner. In a world where we are constantly wishing there were more hours in a day, there is a way to help you get ahead and free up some of that precious time we all crave. Megan Case, owner of C & M Cleaning Services in Sandpoint, has been helping homeowners, contractors and home and vacation rental agencies since 2006. As a full-service company that offers assistance that includes party cleanup, move-in and move-out cleaning, interior window cleaning, complete floor cleaning, trash removal, construction clean up and residential cleaning, Case said that it is her goal to do what she can to accommodate her clients’ needs and budget. “We offer one-time services, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly,” she said. Because she and her staff care greatly about their clients, Case offers a satisfaction guarantee. “Our clients are not just clients, they are family,” she said. Whether you are one who lives alone or just prefer to have someone help with the deep cleaning that the changing of the seasons brings, C & M Cleaning Service is there to assist in a variety of ways. On their website, www.sandpointcleaningservcies.com, there is a checklist of services they provide. If it’s not

listed, all you have to do is inquire to see if it is something with which they can assist. While many may believe that a cleaning service is something they cannot afford, Case offers free estimates either by phone or on her website and people are often surprised that they can in fact afford the services she offers. Case said that C & M Cleaning Service prides itself on paying close attention to detail, and they always encourage feedback from their clients. “We work with their specifications and desires and make their desired outcome a reality,” said Case, who has set up a communications network that allows their clients easy access to managerial and supervision staff. There are many clients who prefer products that are ecofriendly and natural, and C & M Cleaning Service is happy to accommodate that request. They also supply all the necessary tools to complete the job. “We are a licensed, bonded and insured company,” said Case, adding that her business has been successful in large part due to the inspiration of her parents, Michael and Cheryl Cole, who taught her that the sky is the limit when it comes to achieving her goals. She is also grateful to the support the community of Sandpoint has shown her as well as that of her husband and children.

Case said she and her husband moved to Bonner County 11 ½ years ago to start their life together and knew it was a place they wanted to raise a family, and they are glad they did. They have grown to love the community they now call home, and Case has been successful because of that devotion to her clients and community. “We put our name on the line with every job that we do. Our customers can be assured quality, great service and customer satisfaction every time. In our eyes, anything less would tarnish our good name,” she said. “Our handson customer-minded mentality to business allows for quick responses to emergency situations and any concerns our clients may have.” So with the holidays approaching, consider giving yourself a gift – the gift of time. Give C & M Cleaning Services a call or visit their website to get on their schedule.

Hope is Abundant Convoy of Hope created lasting connections By Jani Gonzalez & Patty Hutchens
On October 3, the lives of many in Sandpoint were blessed by the Convoy of Hope. It was not only successful in giving families in need free services, it also succeeded in building community ties to continue offering those services beyond the event date. Convoy of Hope organizers have all mentioned the needs of Bonner County. In our community, the needs may be hidden from plain sight, and agencies and organizations may not know its community’s needs. Additionally, those who require reduced or free services may not know where to go. The Convoy of Hope is an international organization providing for the particular needs of individual communities. Nationally, it assists and trains local coordinators in preparing for the Convoy of Hope day-long charity event. They provide individuals and families with free haircuts, family portraits, groceries, lunch and entertainment in addition to meeting with local organizations and businesses offering free or discounted services to them. Although many local businesses donate supplies and services, Convoy of Hope donates the groceries distributed at the event. First impressions after Sandpoint’s first Convoy of Hope in October showed that it was a resounding success. Eric Rust, pastor of Cedar Hills Church, was the church relations director for the event. He helped gather city churches
30
together to make the event happen. “It was a huge success on a lot of levels,” Rust said. “When you think of the people who came to (the event), there was a lot of unity. I saw parents laughing with their kids, coloring with them in the Kids Zone.” There were more than 200 haircuts given and 30 resumes prepared. There were 1,500 bags of groceries, 200 pairs of children’s shoes and 900 pairs of women’s shoes given away. And not only that, but more than 600 women attended National Breast Cancer Foundation’s early breast cancer detection workshop. “They probably saved multiple lives with that workshop,” Rust said. “It was electric to see so many people come to serve.” When times are difficult, simple things like getting a haircut can become out of reach. Rust saw an older mother and her adult daughter come in for haircuts. “It was nice to see a mother and daughter in the later stages of life get the royal treatment. They left with new shoes and groceries, and I just thought, ‘Wow’ with respect to how they were treated. Two hair stylists were the extension of God’s hands,” he said. The charity event gave volunteer groups an opportunity to see what more could be done

in the community. Several members of the medical and dental professions noted that Sandpoint doesn’t have a free clinic. “It got people talking. … That’s what makes Convoy of Hope a success,” Rust said. “Sandpoint is full of generous people. It’s what I love about the community. It’s really a lifestyle of loving our neighbor as we love ourselves.” And it was not just those who received services who were blessed; the volunteers were as well. Gary and Candy Medders served as the lead people with the volunteer team. “Our role was to help organize the many volunteers coming to the event,” said Gary. “On Friday night we helped with the rally at First Christian Church by registering the volunteers.” And that was no small task given that on that night alone there were about 700 volunteers who showed up. Gary and Candy collected forms and handed out T-shirts to all of those volunteers. As one can imagine, there were many questions to be answered as well. On Saturday morning they arrived at the Bonner County Fairgrounds at 6:30am to hand out badges and packets to the head of each volunteer group – including food services, haircuts, health services, shoes and more. 700 who showed up the previous night, there were approximately 350 more volunteers who showed up on Saturday, eager to give of their time and talent to such a worthy cause. Gary and Candy became involved in the Convoy of Hope through First Christian Church and their friends Dale and Vicki Jeffres, who spearheaded the event. “As Christian believers, Candy and I believe we are called by Christ to care and to serve other people. We saw this as a church mission as well as a personal mission to help serve our community. After attending the very first informational meeting, we became committed to the mission of the Convoy of Hope,” said Gary. And they are glad they did. The day brought many inspiring moments as Gary and the other volunteers witnessed the delight in the faces of those being served. “I watched a young lady and her children getting their haircuts, and the joy I saw in those eyes of both the mother and her children was very heartwarming. One could sense their selfesteem starting to rise,” said Gary. “I watched a family getting their photograph taken, and to see the happiness of having a picture taken that they would never have had the opportunity to do was incredible.” But it was the people at the prayer tent that appears to have impacted Gary the most. “People at the prayer tent being prayed over and having someone who truly cares them as a

Would they do it again? Absolutely. “We would be happy to help serve again as we feel we were truly blessed by just being helping hands for Christ,” said Gary. As executive director of Kinderhaven, she is the inner flame and guiding light of an organization dedicated to the welfare of neglected and abused children who have been removed from their homes for their own safety by Child Protection Services. They could not have a more compassionate, tireless benefactor and advocate. After almost nine years as head of this extraordinary organization, Horvath is allowing herself the gift of conserving and concentrating her energies on the therapeutic aspect of the children’s care by resuming her original role as clinical director on a part-time basis. In this role, she will be able to focus on refining Kinderhaven’s program to include recent scientific findings related to the impact of trauma on child development. But the beginning is always the best place to start, so let’s turn back to page one in the astonishing history of Kinderhaven and its dedicated leader. Kinderhaven began as an emergency shelter for abused and neglected children. The landlord of a little house on Alder Street bravely overruled some neighborhood concerns about these children coming to live there. The house welcomed the children to a safe environment overseen by two staff members, one of whom lived there to provide 24-hour care. The children now had a safe shelter and a well-ordered environment with a warm bed, plenty of food, clothing, school transportation and adult supervision. As wonderful as it was, there were no therapeutic resources in place and the children were only allowed to stay for 30 days. Something more was needed. That “something” turned out to be “someone.” Kinderhaven needed someone with practical executive skills, the vision of a world-changer, an unshakable love for children, an ability to raise funds, empathy for an overworked staff, and – it would be optimal if this person was also skilled in the therapeutic realm, for the sake of the damaged psyches and bruised emotions of the children. An impossible wish list, of course, so they honed in on the critical need for a clinical presence, and offered the part-time position to Phyllis Horvath. With 33 years in management, working with teenagers and building organizations, and years in private practice as a therapist and running a children’s program in a mental health clinic, Horvath was the perfect candidate. When she joined Kinderhaven in April of 2007, the changing organization soon asked her also to be the supervisor of direct care. Her success prompted them to ask her in October of that same year to add the position of Executive Director to her roster of duties. And their “impossible” wish list was fulfilled. “I wore three hats for three years,” she recalls as calmly as if anyone could have done it, “and it was a good learning experience, very hands-on, putting therapeutic facets into place and learning to work with a nonprofit board.” Her passion for Kinderhaven’s cause gave the growing nonprofit a voice that touched the hearts of donors, community organizations and business owners.

Generosity, consensus and enthusiasm followed in her wake. Her very first try at a grant proved successful and subsequent efforts garnered over $120,000 for Kinderhaven during her tenure. To this day, she often writes handwritten letters to contributors, updating them on the children’s progress and describing what wonderful things have been done with their donation. The changes she gradually worked into Kinderhaven took someone of her diverse skills to bring to reality. “I began with a therapeutic (her favorite word) program based on Theraplay, which is based on healthy parenting principles. “When you are a family,” she explains, “the parents provide nurturing, engagement, structure and appropriate challenge with encouragement, like, ‘Yes you can get that grade, play that sport, do that dance!’ My goal was for Kinderhaven to operate like a home.” This orientation became their key difference from other shelters and was the catalyst for their metamorphosis from the original model. When Horvath first arrived, the “level system” was in place. Applied in juvenile facilities where the children have severe behavior problems, this system encourages behavioral change through earning privileges at increasing levels. She replaced the level system with a parental model with natural consequences. Welcomed in the “crazy-quilt family structure” of aunts (the staff) and a grandmother (Phyllis herself), the children experienced a lot of love, structure without rigidity, and the security of procedures
in place for administering medications, bedtimes, and getting to school on time. Coming from homes where the abuse made them feel at fault and triggered their survival behaviors, this new environment enabled them to see they weren’t at fault after all. Emotions once masked as reciprocal anger began to reveal themselves as pain, sadness, etc., and were processed appropriately. Relationships became possible, wounds healed, hearts opened and lives changed. She removed the 30 day limit on a child’s stay because, “Every time a child is moved, it disrupts their life and makes recovery harder. So now they stay as long as needed, whether it’s months or years,” said Horvath. Seeing a young child totally relaxed in its parents’ arms is a precious sight that can move Horvath to tears. “The home environment Kinderhaven creates is the heart environment that will heal the children,” she says. “The evolution they make is huge and you can see the results. A child comes in and leaves a very different individual.” Horvath gives huge credit to her staff. “We ask them to come in with an open heart, and at the same time, healthy boundaries. And we try to be attentive to secondary trauma,” she adds, referring to the staff ’s continued immersion in the lives of traumatized children whose pasts are sometimes horror stories.
In returning now to her first love – clinical therapy – Horvath is excited to explore recent scientific research into how trauma affects brain development. “A teenager’s actions may resemble those of a three-year-old, because the part of their brain that handles emotions didn’t develop beyond that age, even though their chronological age may be 16,” she explains. Because there are techniques today that can help change the ways a person’s brain is wired, Horvath is looking forward to “really exciting, bigger differences in their lives.” She will also remain involved in staff training and the children’s evaluations. As board chair, Kathy Chambers expresses it, “She doesn’t want to leave and couldn’t if she tried. This transition is a wonderful win for everybody!” Kinderhaven transforms young lives. For everyone involved, there is no doubt – they do it all for the children. Contact information: Kinderhavensandpoint.com 208.265.2236 contact@kinderhavensandpoint.com
“It traumatizes the caregiver in a lesser way and is a heavy weight, so we are alert to guard against burnout.” They are invested in having highly tenured individuals.
Kinderhaven is a community organization dedicated to supporting children in crisis and giving them back their right to thrive by providing a safe, secure home in which their emotional, physical and mental well-being are protected and enriched.

It was a season to remember for the Sandpoint High School football team. After entertaining the fans on Friday nights throughout the fall, the team earned its way to the state championship game. And while they lost to Bishop Kelly – a team that has now won three years in a row – the Bulldogs won the hearts of the Sandpoint community. This year’s team had 32 seniors, many of whom have played together for several years. And if you ask them what they will miss now that the season has come to an end, most will not answer that it is the game, but rather the camaraderie and friendships they have made. You see, football at Sandpoint High School is not a three of four month commitment; it is a year round commitment. All the players are enrolled in the same physical education classes together. They lift weights, train and support one another to help them reach their goals. Walk into the weight room on any given morning during the summer, and you will see dozens of young men who have rolled out of bed to be there bright and early.
WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015
When the team left for the state championship game, they did so to a huge send off. After being served a hearty meal by dozens of parents at First Christian Church, the team received a police escort through the high school parking lot where students were let out of class to bid them farewell, and across the Long Bridge where at the end at least 100 people stood with signs and big smiles waving good bye to the boys. And as one entered the Kibbie Dome for the Saturday afternoon game, there were nearly four sections filled with a sea of red and white, leaving one wondering if there was anyone left back home in Sandpoint. After the game, Facebook was filled with comments of support for our beloved Bulldogs, congratulating them on a fabulous season. But as a parent to one of these senior players, one message summed up perfectly what was in our hearts. It was from Erin Bonine, an excerpt from her post follows: Congrats to the Bulldog Boys of Fall 2015. It would be easy to be disappointed tonight; it is always hard to be #2 in a world that gives so much accolades to the #1. However, as I have watched most of you for 13 years develop into the fine young men that you are, I can honestly say that you have lots to be proud of… Goals take hard work. They take determination and dedication. It means that you worked hard when others played. You went business to business selling raffle tickets (learning a great skill while you raised needed
funds) while your friends hung out. You were out of bed (and at the weight room) during summer breaks while others slept. You were doing homework when you were dog tired, but you did it anyway. You were yelled at, cajoled, encouraged and driven by a team of hard but fair coaches. They saw things in you that only they could see; they brought them to the forefront for you to develop. And you did. You were criticized, challenged, and at times you wanted to quit. But you didn’t. You fought to the last minute of the final quarter in the final game. While you did not bring home the trophy, my hope and prayer for the Boys of Fall is that you realize that you still brought home something important. You brought home a community that win or lose is very PROUD of you. A school that supported and loved you through this season. Most importantly you brought home families to whom you are the most important people… So the Bulldog Boys of Fall, the SHS Cheer Team and the SHS Dance team you are winners to us all and always will be. – Erin Bonine Whether you are a graduating senior who is moving onto you next adventure in life or a member of the team who plans to return for another year to the delight of our community, move forward with the same dedication and hard work you have exhibited this year. You are number one in our hearts and your community is proud of you. Thank you for giving us some great memories.

LIGHTENING THE BURDEN
Bonner Community Food Bank staff finds great joy in the gift of giving By Teresa Pesce
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson A fireplace. It’s the first thing you see when you walk into the offices of the Bonner Community Food Bank. And it’s symbolic of the warm welcome awaiting anyone who needs understanding and practical support during financially difficult times. Organized in 1980 by the Ministerial Association to assist with emergency nonmedical resources in times of personal crisis, The Food Bank today is an efficient, flourishing community nonprofit. Two factors are central to this laudable success: a generous community and continuous connected leadership. For its first 20 years, Florence Carter was The Food Bank’s true leader as chairman of the board; and for the last 20 years her daughter, Alice Wallace, has served as its dedicated director. Carter, a woman of compassion and proactive leadership, faced the challenge of convincing the happily prosperous and close-knit town of Sandpoint that they did indeed have the hungry and homeless among them due to hard financial times. Two decades of focused energy established The Food Bank as an indispensable community resource. Determined that her daughter, Alice Wallace, added civic-mindedness to her roster of strengths, Florence suggested Alice serve on the board for a year. It was a natural match. When the position of director opened, the board asked Alice to take over the job as an

interim stopgap during May of 1997 until they found a qualified male applicant. “The job involved lifting endless crates and cartons into a pick-up truck, and they weren’t sure a woman could do it,” explains Alice, recalling their quaint objection that the work was ruinous to arms and hands. But far from being a flower prone to wilting, Alice had worked in the woods and driven vehicles, and she handled the responsibilities so admirably the board asked her to remain until September. And when September arrived, they agreed unanimously on both her competence and her excellence and hired her as director.
director,” she frankly admits. “So financial security was a priority.” Today, The Food Bank is entirely funded by donations and grants and receives no county, state or federal funds. She is in close touch with the board on all issues and directives, maintaining a successful working relationship where information is promptly disseminated, viewpoints are valued and conclusions are mutual. orientation of the enterprise contributes continually to its sustained success.
Although Alice thought it was quite possible that she would end her days still being the director of The Food Bank, she had noticed the excellent work of Debbie Love and began to consider her as a possible successor, if she were interested. Debbie had worked with the homeless in Boise and successfully applied for a $60,000 grant to open an assistance facility south of Lewiston. “I needed to hire an assistant, but I wanted an assistant who could become the new director when I retire in two years,” says Alice.
Careful stewardship of all resources is a hallmark of their efficiency, resulting in incredible longevity of those resources. In fact, when pointing out their new van (which Alice refers to as “our new baby” because it’s the newest member in The Food Bank family), she states that she expects it to last for 20 years. That’s because the old van donated by
Then one day her receptionist, Tammy Harder, suggested Debbie Love as a possible candidate for the assistant position. She, too, had noticed the Debbie’s excellence factor. With her thoughts confirmed, Alice met with Debbie over coffee for an initial discussion and followup conversations, and the happy result is a fulfilling new future for Debbie. “I love helping

Working from a format for success confirmed during her mother’s tenure of service, Alice viewed networking as the next step to growth and strength for The Food Bank. “For instance, I advised the board to join the Chamber of Commerce,” she recalls. Intercommunity connections are now so well established that anyone walking into The Food Bank offices or accessing their web site at foodbank83864. com can explore the entire community support system available to those in need. “The Food Bank was broke when I became

people,” she says, “and this is my dream job.” In two years, Alice Wallace will step away as The Food Bank director. “My only regret is that I can’t work here for another 20 years,” she says. How many opportunities will you get in a lifetime to be accepted into a culture that’s not your own? Yes, almost all of us have the opportunity to travel, see new places, and meet friends from all over the world, but unless you’re planning on learning a new language and becoming an ex-pat, the chances to truly get to know a community are few and far. US-El Salvador Sister Cities (USESSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides volunteers just this opportunity. Around for almost 30 years, USESSC formed during the Salvadoran Civil War as an organization to promote solidarity between the U.S. and El Salvador. They partner U.S. cities with their own “sister” Salvadoran communities. Tthere are currently 17 pairs of communities. Opportunities through USESSC include: • Internships in El Salvador for a minimum of three months. If you’re proficient in Spanish and interested in writing, blogging, history, human rights or digital media, you might be the perfect fit.
“I
can’t think of any other way to describe how I feel interacting with others through community service besides with these four words: I absolutely love it. I’m you’re notso-average high school girl, because my inspiration comes from giving back to the world around me.” —Katie Chambers, embarrassing scholarship essay 2011 I found this quote from my 18-year-old self the other day while writing on my computer, watching the torrents of rain outside the small patio, making it more impossible to leave the house with each passing minute. I had just recovered from my first brush with dengue fever in El Salvador, and found myself very inspired to write and reflect on what had brought me here in the first place. That meant perusing further and further back through my words until before I knew it, I re-met this high school girl.
I reveled in the label of “humanitarian.” Little did I know back then how broad and controversial this term actually is, nor how many layers it is made of. As I felt more than watched the rain pour down outside, I was hit with how much I had learned and transformed in just four short years. How did I get from dishing out tomato-basil bisque at a Sandpoint, Idaho soup kitchen to speaking a foreign language in the jungle of a rural country? Humanitarianism comes with responsibility. This is the greatest lesson I’ve pulled from my college education and travels − you’re not automatically put on the nice list for labeling yourself a volunteer. If you’re not mindful of your service to the communities around you, you can actually do more harm as a humanitarian than good. Whether you have ideas to get involved on a local level, volunteer abroad, or even start a nonprofit, here are the top three pieces of advice that have helped me graduate from
• Employment as a USESSC coordinator. USESSC is searching for an individual fluent in Spanish with experience in nonprofit work who has lived in a Latin American country. • Join a delegation to visit El Salvador yourself and learn about current issues. my soup kitchen days to actually contributing to positive change in my surroundings: Think from the Inside Out Sometimes the answers we have aren’t the answers that are needed. I learned this lesson after driving three hours away from the towering mountains of Bozeman, Montana and into the rolling sea of Northern Cheyenne grasslands. We had left behind the grocery stores, gas stations, and almost all other signs of economic activity. As we drove farther into the reservation, the only other outsiders we saw were the truck drivers passing through on their way to bigger cities and a paycheck. My research partner and I finally arrived at Little Big Horn College to meet with our mentor, Meredith. We had come to pick his brain and tribal wisdom for a class that collaborated with the Northern Cheyenne community on beneficial research topics. What work could we do for him that would actually be helpful to his community? “You know, I’d really like some information on the Echinacea plant,” he answered. I watched all of the ideas I had come prepared with fly out the college cafeteria door. Echinacea? I thought. What about some lesson plans for the elementary school? Some local business ideas? Anything more tangible than information on a plant.
Where I wanted to shoot for bigger and more dynamic ideas for the reservation, Meredith was realistically thinking one step at a time while taking into consideration Northern Cheyenne values of life. Having rented out a plot of land abundant in native plants, Meredith hoped to teach the youth on the reservation how to identify these plants and remind them of their ancestral uses. Although it hadn’t been my first choice, I spent the rest of the semester preparing a report for Meredith comparing traditional uses of Echinacea to Western use. Our findings were surprisingly, well, cool: we found science to better verify Northern Cheyenne uses of the plant. Meredith was able to use our findings to work into his educational program on his land. For the big picture innovators out there like me, I’m telling you now to slow down. Before acting on ideas that you think are the right ones, put yourself in the shoes of those who will be directly affected by your service. Consider that the values you hold important may not be the same values as those you are working with. Get to know your community inside and out, and by listening instead of leading. Begin to look through their eyes while working instead of your own. Watch out for Paternalism Already forgot this high school vocabulary word?
LIVINGLOCAL
Paternalism can be defined as: “Those in authority restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to them in the subordinates’ supposed best interest.” In other words, it’s the thought that you are qualified to solve the problems of others, even more so than the others themselves. Paternalism often arises when working with vulnerable populations, such as children or impoverished communities. I’ve spent the last three months working with a nonprofit in El Salvador (see side bar for more information), but I witnessed paternalism before coming to the Central American country. At a dinner party this summer, I all of a sudden found myself the center of

attention as one by one, people stopped their side conversations to listen as I explained what kind of projects I would be working on in the Salvadoran community.
and leave the dinner table?
“Wow. That is so great you will be down there helping to show people how to do things they wouldn’t know how to do themselves.”
Paternalism is a trait you have to personally decide you want to eradicate. Trust me − there are many confident individuals out there who don’t see the problem with believing they can best solve the world’s issues. Watch out for this feeling of seemingly harmless superiority that exists within all of us − there is no better or worse population out there than another. Lower yourself down from this pedestal (down 18-year-old humanitarians! Down!), get comfortable questioning your motives, and learn to listen to the cause instead of shouting over it.
It was passed off as a harmless comment, meant as a compliment to me as the other party-goers nodded and muttered in agreement. However, it was all I could do to keep my jaw from dropping. It was a very similar response to many I had experienced in my pre-departure conversations with friends and family. I realized how superior my society felt toward Latin America (half of them out there still think I’m in Ecuador- it’s all the same, right?). Did I snap back with an opinion? Lecture on my true intentions and philosophies? Get up

No. I gave a small smile and shut up.

perfect picnic spot had it not been for what lay beneath the earth.
You help the person to clean their wound. You listen to them as they explained what happened and sit with them until they feel okay to get up. During your conversation, you discover how much you have in common (you both like beer) and decide to head off in the same direction (to a brewery).
Shovels froze in mid-air as everyone looked in the direction of the archaeologist. The playful mood of mindless digging had changed in an instant. I could actually feel the heaviness of the air resting its weight on my shoulders as my compañeros’ eyes darted into the hole they had created.
Although both scenarios are helpful to the fallen person, the first embodies more the idea of charity. When you practice charity, you give with the purpose of aid, such as donating money to an organization and moving on. The second scenario embodies more the idea of solidarity: the unity of individuals as they support each other in a common cause.
We were only an hour into the exhumation process, an hour into a moment anticipated by four years of bureaucratic preparation. All of the required officials were there: the human rights lawyer looking on, the archaeologist leading the dig, and the handful of police resting conspicuously away from the group under the shade of a tree. There was a journalist, a photographer, and the widowed owner of the land. The rest of us acted as manual labor and moral support for the brothers of the two bodies that had waited patiently to be discovered for 33 years.
This is my job in El Salvador, to practice solidarity (unlike my example, this sadly does not entail drinking any beer). I am an on-site representative of my organization. My sole role is to be present in a rural community and accompany Salvadoran locals. Yes, I help out wherever and whenever I can with various projects, but the most important work I do is simply being here. Let me give you a heavy example. The other day I sat beneath the shade of a grand canopy tree overlooking the rapidlyflowing Sumpul River. It would’ve been the
54
“Everybody stop. We’ve hit a shoe.”
This dig is only one of hundreds that are currently being conducted throughout the country. As citizen after citizen disappeared during the Salvadoran Civil War of the 80s, families were left without any closure that their loved ones had actually perished at the hands of the military government. The lengthy process of uncovering graves in search of these friends and family is still being carried out today.
LIVINGLOCAL
As for me, I hadn’t picked up a shovel all day. I had helped a bit in the kitchen to prepare breakfast and lunch for the workers and policemen, but really spent most of the day watching in fascination as tons of dirt were lifted off of two skeletons, one shovel-full at a time. I passed out coffee. I talked with the men while they rested. Solidarity is about being. Being there when someone needs you, and being a presence in our global world. It’s that moment when you pull back from the head of the group to walk in step with your companions. Sometimes, we don’t always know what’s best. Sometimes, listening is better than leading. And sometimes, not acting can be more beneficial than acting. You can’t simply call yourself a humanitarian in a high school essay, although it might be a good start. Humanitarianism is mindfulness, and it’s this mindfulness that above all creates change in our environments. Use this manual as a set of guidelines for awareness of your thoughts and your actions. But above all, remember the responsibility we accept by being “do-gooders.” It’s the responsibility to be your own self-critic and monitor, which can be the key to whether any good is actually being done at all. Even a teenager with the soup spoon can do that.

DID YOU KNOW? For the last 76 years, Wilson has been the exclusive producer of NFL footballs. The company produces approximately 4,000 per day. Since the modern NFL draft began, there has only been one year when a quarterback has not been selected during the first two rounds. 1939 was the year the NFL first began to broadcast its games on television. The viewing audience for that first game was a mere 500 people. CBS paid $4.65 million in 1962 for the first exclusive rights to broadcast NFL games. (Compare that to Fox’s current deal which pays a reported $1.15 billion per year for its NFC package). But that deal with CBS didn’t cover the NFL championship, which NBC acquired for just under $1 million or about one-fourth the cost of what it’ll take to buy a 30-second ad at Super Bowl 50. The oldest inductee to the NFL Hall of Fame was Ed Sabol who was 94 at the time. The youngest is Gale Sayers who was 34 at the time he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. A record number of penalties were called in the first three weeks of this year’s NFL season in comparison to any other season during the same time period.
64
I
n honor of reaching the midpoint of the 2015-16 NFL season, it’s time that we take a look back on the first half. We know the Pacific Northwest is predominantly part of Seahawks nation, but what about those whose hearts belong elsewhere? I’ll check in on all 32 teams and give them an old-fashioned letter grade for their respective first-half performances. For ease of reading, I’ve listed all teams in alphabetical order. With plenty to go over, let’s not waste any time and get right into it! Arizona Cardinals (NFC West): A QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald continue to evade the traps of Father Time as they are both enjoying career years. Through week nine, Palmer sits fifth in the league in passing yards (2,386) and second in touchdowns (20). Meanwhile, Fitzgerald has eclipsed 706 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. The tough road still lies ahead as they have contests with Green Bay and Cincinnati to go along with two games against Seattle. Atlanta Falcons (NFC South): B RB Devonta Freeman has exploded onto the scene since Tevin Coleman went down in week two. All Freeman has done since then is rush for 721 yards and nine touchdowns. Despite Freeman’s production, the Falcons have dropped 3 of their last 4 games due to inconsistent play out of QB Matt Ryan. WR Julio Jones leads the league in receiving yards (1,029) and receptions (80). The Falcons are currently the last ones in for the playoffs.
LIVINGLOCAL
With two games remaining against the resurgent Panthers, they will have to fight hard to stay in that position. Baltimore Ravens (AFC North): CIt’s hard to be a Ravens fan right now. Each of their six losses has been by one possession. WR Steve Smith Sr. was enjoying a career year until he went down with a seasonending injury. QB Joe Flacco has basically been a wash throwing 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. RB Justin Forsett has been valuable in that he hasn’t turned the ball over yet. The biggest problem with the Ravens is their secondary. Too many big plays and blown assignments each week have contributed to the six losses. With Cincinnati yet to lose a game, the playoff picture looks bleak. Buffalo Bills (AFC East): C Head Coach Rex Ryan was supposed to be the Savior in Buffalo. Instead, he has basically made a team that makes you say “they’re OK I guess.” The Bills aren’t horrible anywhere, but they aren’t necessarily great either. QB Tyrod Taylor has shown glimpses of greatness. Mainly known for his legs, he has developed as a pocket passer. LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams have been respectable in the backfield. Ryan will need to see his defense actually execute the schemes he has set forth if they want to see the playoffs. Carolina Panthers (NFC South): A Like the Bills, the Panthers aren’t necessarily great at any one thing. The difference lies in
WWW.SANDPOINTLIVING.COM DECEMBER 2015
how well they play as a unit. Despite ranking 27th in the league for passing offense, the Panthers have got it done on the ground. QB Cam Newton has rarely been under pressure all season, affording him and RB Jonathan Stewart the opportunity for space. A soft remaining schedule gives the Panthers a good chance to continue this success. Chicago Bears (NFC North): CAlways under heavy scrutiny, QB Jay Cutler has actually fared well in 2015, throwing for 1,787 yards, 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. The struggles stem mainly from RB Matt Forte and WR Alshon Jeffery battling injuries, along with a defense that is giving up 27.6 points per game. Despite this, the Bears have managed to go 3-2 in the last 5 games. Are they trending upward? With Green Bay and Minnesota currently holding playoff spots above them, the Bears will be hard-pressed to garner their own spot by season’s end. Cincinnati Bengals (AFC North): A The Bengals have done so well that many have brought QB Andy Dalton into the conversation of MVP. There aren’t many holes for this team as they are well balanced on both offense and defense. This has helped them to four wins by at least 10 points. Remaining unbeaten may prove difficult as they still have games against Denver and Arizona. However, with the rest of the division being mediocre, the AFC North seems to be theirs to lose.
Cleveland Browns (AFC North): D Cleveland’s only two wins came against hapless Tennessee and Baltimore. Somebody had to win in those games, and Cleveland just happened to be that team. Other than this, there haven’t been many bright spots for the city of Cleveland. Head Coach Mike Pettine can’t make up his mind at quarterback. The defense has already given up 3,614 total yards (30th in NFL). Cleveland looks poised to be picking in the top 10 of the 2016 NFL draft. So I guess that’s one good thing, right? Dallas Cowboys (NFC East): D+ QB Tony Romo and WR Dez Bryant both went down early and missed significant time. Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel have been underwhelming in place of Romo. Add in no clear producer at the premium positions of running back and wide receiver, and their record comes as no surprise. The good news for the Cowboys is the mediocrity that is the NFC East. Bryant is already back and Romo may return week 11, setting them up for a run. Denver Broncos (AFC West): AThe Broncos are where they are primarily because of a formidable defense. Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips has them in the top five of nearly every category. With QB Peyton Manning on the downward trend and a boring offense in general, the Broncos will look to this defense to carry them into the playoffs.
LIVINGLOCAL
Detroit Lions (NFC North): F No surprise here. The Lions have struggled everywhere. QB Matthew Stafford has thrown 11 interceptions; the defense has given up 245 points and 3,086 yards. WR Calvin Johnson has been held in check all season (659 yards and only three touchdowns). The offense has only collected 557 yards on the ground. It looks like the Lions may be getting that first overall pick in next year’s draft. Green Bay Packers (NFC North): B+ After starting the season 6-0, the Packers have lost their last two, albeit to Denver and Carolina. After losing WR Jordy Nelson for the year, the Packers are 26th in the league for passing yards per game (225.3). This could
Despite ranking 27th in the league for passing offense, the Panthers have got it done on the ground. QB Cam Newton has rarely been under pressure all season, affording him and RB Jonathan Stewart the opportunity for space.

be due to the Packers not throwing the ball enough each game (26th in passing attempts). With RB Eddie Lacy struggling as of late, the Packers need Rodgers to throw the ball more to avoid a collapse. Houston Texans (AFC South): CThe Texans have three things going for them: WR DeAndre Hopkins, DE JJ Watt, and playing in the AFC South. The Texans offense is basically “throw the ball to DeAndre on every play,” who is second in the league in targets. Watt is having a better season statistically through his first eight games this year than his first eight in 2014-15. With the AFC South being so awful, the Texans still technically have a chance. Indianapolis Colts (AFC South): C Hard to believe a first place team gets a C, but that’s how bad the AFC South is this year. QB Andrew Luck has simply not been good. He has thrown 12 interceptions and fumbled three times (losing one). The defense continues to struggle. RB Frank Gore has been nearly nonexistent. Even with a losing record, the Colts may very well win the South this year. Jacksonville Jaguars (AFC South): D QB Blake Bortles is in the league’s top 10 for passing yards by virtue of his top two receivers, Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson. Despite what the record may say, the Jaguars have good young talent that will only get better, which is always something to be optimistic about.
66
Kansas City Chiefs (AFC West): C A five-game skid and losing starting RB Jamaal Charles has been the story of the 2015 season for KC. QB Alex Smith has done well at protecting the ball despite poor pass protection. The Chiefs still have a shot at the playoffs if the defense can tighten up their pass coverage as they have allowed 16 touchdowns through the air. Miami Dolphins (AFC East): D After spending a bunch of money on DE Ndamukong Suh and firing head coach Joe Philbin, the Dolphins are still suffering in the loss column. Only two of their games have been decided by one score, while the other six games have been either big wins or big losses. Consistency is something the Dolphins are still searching for. However, it may be too late in 2015.
controversy of “Deflategate.” After all the scrutiny, they seem to be seeking vengeance. They will be the Super Bowl favorites once again. New Orleans Saints (NFC South): CQB Drew Brees is still finding ways to be productive, including a seven-touchdown performance against the Giants. The defense continues to plague them week-by-week. They are dead last in the league in total defense, which has put too much pressure on the offense to score big points. Unless the defense turns it around, expect the Saints to remain at the bottom of their division.
Minnesota Vikings (NFC North): B+ Boy are the Vikings and their fans happy to have Adrian Petersen back after the 2014 controversy. He currently leads the league in rushing with 758 yards. The Vikings still have tough contests against Seattle, Atlanta, and Arizona.
New York Giants (NFC East): BQB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr. continue to be the focal point of the Giants. Manning boasts a healthy 3:1 touchdowninterception ratio while Beckham Jr. just continues to get open. The Achilles heel remains an awful pass defense. The Giants have given up 2,770 yards through the air, which is good enough for 32nd in the league. Until that is straightened out, the offense will continue to be pressured to put up around 30 points per game to win.
New England Patriots (AFC East): A+ The Patriots are the best team in the NFL for a multitude of reasons. Their offense looks very much like the 2007 team that went 16-0 in the regular season. The big reason they get the A+ grade is how they’ve handled the offseason
New York Jets (AFC East): C+ RB Chris Ivory has become a household name for the Jets, ranking in the top 10 in both rushing yards and touchdowns. After QB Geno Smith was injured in a preseason altercation, Ryan Fitzpatrick has done well. The defense

continues to keep the Jets close every game and will need the offense to be more consistent each week to have a chance at a wild card spot. Oakland Raiders (AFC West): BThe Raiders are finally trending in the right direction thanks to the rise of three guys on the offensive side of the ball: QB Derek Carr, WR Amari Cooper, and RB Latavius Murray. These three have helped the Oakland offense to be very well-balanced. Cooper looks poised to be a finalist for ROY. Even if the playoffs don’t happen in 2015, Raiders fans have a lot to look forward to in the near future. Philadelphia Eagles (NFC East): C+ While the Raiders may be the NFL’s biggest surprise, the Eagles may be the NFL’s biggest disappointment. Big free agent acquisition Demarco Murray was dreadful in his first two games having more rushing attempts (21) than actual rushing yards (11). The only reason their grade isn’t lower is because after starting 2015 with a 1-3 record, they’ve managed to win three of their last four with the lone loss coming against undefeated Carolina. In the wide open NFC East, the Eagles could steal it from underneath everyone if Murray and company manage to perform up to expectations. Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North): BMany may think this grade is high. But I am giving the Steelers the benefit of the doubt after seeing QB Ben Roethlisberger go down for a few weeks, as well as star RB Le’Veon Bell suffering a season-ending MCL tear. To be able to retain a winning record through these injuries is impressive in its own light. Deangelo Williams is a capable replacement in the backfield. Roethlisberger and star WR Antonio Brown still make this a dangerous team moving forward and should be considered a favorite to win a wild card spot. San Diego Chargers (AFC West): D It’s hard to assign a D to a team that currently possesses the quarterback with the most yards passing in Philip Rivers. The problem is a Charger defense that currently ranks toward the bottom in both rush and pass defense. Any defense that allows 27.6 PPG is going to make it difficult for the offense to keep pace. It’s sad to see another productive year in Philip Rivers go to waste. San Francisco 49ers (NFC West): F After such a massive roster overhaul and head coaching change in the off-season, the way the 49ers have fared to this point comes as no surprise. QB Colin Kaepernick has been a disaster (five interceptions and five fumbles) and lost his starting job to Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert found a way to pull out a win against
Atlanta in his first start, but the rest of the season will be hard to watch for 49ers fans. Seattle Seahawks (NFC West): C+ The Seahawks are a perfect example of how preseason predictions can prove to be futile. For anyone that read my NFL season preview article in September, I had high praise and expectations for a Seattle team coming off back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. SS Kam Chancellor’s contract holdout proved to be devastating to the Seahawk’s defense for the games he missed. RB Marshawn Lynch has had injury problems, but has been a non-factor even when on the field (103 rushes for 375 yards and only 2 touchdowns). QB Russell Wilson has been nothing but average (1,878 yards, 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions). What was supposed to be a solid offensive group has been underwhelming. The defense still ranks toward the top of the league. With Arizona doing so well, the Seahawks may be looking more toward a wild card this year. A third straight Super Bowl on the other hand isn’t looking so good in the Emerald City this season.
The defense has been phenomenal under new Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau (fifth in total defense). The issue lies in offensive inconsistency and not being able to hold on to fourth quarter leads. With the AFC South being so weak, all the Titans need is one hot streak and they could actually make their way into the playoffs. Washington Redskins (NFC East): CThe Redskins continue to disappoint. After the Robert Griffin III experiment failed, the torch was handed off to Kirk Cousins, who has kept the passing game toward the middle of the pack. The ground game continues to be the weight that slows down this team from making any serious run. Over half of the games left on the Redskins’ schedule are against teams with losing records. Does Cousins and company
St. Louis Rams (NFC West): C+ Rookie RB Todd Gurley has been impressive for a Rams team that hasn’t had many stars in recent years. He has been vital to the offense as the Ram’s rank at the very bottom of the league in the passing game. If the Rams could get that passing game even just to league average, they could have a real chance at taking the West. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFC South): C Rookie QB and 1st overall pick Jameis Winston has already done enough to double Tampa Bay’s win total from last season. The most important thing for this team is their steady improvement each week. While nobody was expecting playoffs heading into this season, people were expecting improvement. Winston and company have done just that. The future is looking bright in Tampa. Tennessee Titans (AFC South): DRookie QB Marcus Mariota has been great and will be in the conversation for ROY. He already has two games with four touchdown passes and no interceptions (which tied an NFL record).

And the Winners Are… THE STORIES BEHIND OUR FAVORITE TOYS
BY JAN ST. GEORGE, “THE TOY LADY”
If you ask an avid baseball fan, he will tell you that the Baseball Hall of Fame is in Cooperstown, New York. Local colleges, including the University of Idaho, have halls of fame to honor student athletes, and the Spokane Arena has the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame.
Puppets appeared thousands of years ago and have played a role in nearly every culture. My childhood puppets include Sherry Lewis’ Lambchop and Ed Sullivan’s Topo Gigio. Teachers and parents appreciate a child’s willingness to listen to a puppet. (Thanks, Elmo!)
So, you’re thinking, tell me something I don’t know. Okay, there’s a Santa Claus Hall of Fame in Santa Claus, Indiana, a Croquet Hall of Fame in West Palm Beach, Florida, and a Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Hayward, Wisconsin.
Twister entered the toy market in a cloud of controversy. Sears Roebuck and Company refused to offer Twister in its 1966 catalog as it felt the game was too racy. However, after Johnny Carson and actress Eva Gabor played the game during a Tonight Show broadcast, sales exceeded three million in 1967.
Have I caught your interest? I hope so, as I’m going to tell you about a hall of fame that celebrates special mementos of our childhoods – toys! In 1998, 11 toys were inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. This initial class included Barbie, Crayola crayons, Legos, marbles, Monopoly, and six other “classic” toys. In 1999, six more toys were added, including Duncan yo-yos and hula hoops. From 2000 to 2014, 39 more toys were added. The selection criteria is based on icon-status, longevity, discovery and innovation. But wait, you say. What about 2015? I have breaking news. Out of 12 finalists, the winners are: the classic puppet, the game of Twister and the Super Soaker. (Sorry, coloring book. Maybe next year.)

The Super Soaker is an “oops” example. A nuclear engineer was inventing a new heat pump using water vapor. He hooked the nozzle up to his bathroom faucet. A steady stream of water shot across the room. (Sorry, dear!) He added a PVC pipe and an empty soda bottle, and, after a few modifications, the Super Soaker was born. Is your inner kid wondering what other toys are in the National Toy Hall of Fame? You can get the complete list at www.museumofplay.org. and see them, and more toys, at The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. Wanna shop local? I proudly sell more than half of the 59 inductees at Whiz Kids.

You Can’t Out Train Bad Habits CHANGING A HABIT A MONTH MAY CHANGE YOUR LIFE
BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR
76
Have you ever heard the saying “You can’t out train a bad diet?” I personally say it all the time. If we aren’t mindful of our diet, all the good work we do at the gym or outside could be hidden by our lack of caloric or nutritional accountability. But really, for true wellness, it goes much deeper than what you do or don’t eat. It’s about little and big details of your daily life from how you walk to how you sleep, sit or even communicate. If there is something in your life you don’t like, the new year is approaching and this is a great time to look at what you can do to help yourself. Change a daily habit, and you just might change your life. Do you have back pain and never had an injury that can take credit for it or constant

neck pain that your friends and family say is from the weight of the world you carry on your shoulders? In our current American culture most back and neck pain can be summed up by one common flaw that most of us have. Bad posture. Can’t deny it can you? You probably also think I’m wrong, but I’m most likely not. Not just your sitting posture, but your standing posture, computer posture, studying posture, work posture, getting dressed posture, eating posture, on the phone posture, on the potty posture, texting posture… I could go on forever. Many modern day conveniences have led to aches and pains. It seems counterintuitive to try and make life easier and end up unhealthy. The old adage about there not being any real shortcuts seems to always ring true.

The most prevalent pain I hear about is low back pain. As a physical trainer, it is out of my scope to diagnose so once we have been cleared by medical I ask my clients to do a couple of simple tasks. I might ask them to pretend to tie their shoe, pick something up off the floor or sit on the floor and stand back up again. It is immediately evident if their daily postural habits could be a contributing factor in their pain. Just because a movement doesn’t hurt at the time doesn’t mean it isn’t causing a problem. If you continuously round your back during daily activities, it isn’t if but when will the back pain begin. This doesn’t mean that all back pain is caused by poor posture, but I have never seen a case where daily compression of the lumbar spine hasn’t made whatever is going on worse. The easiest fix is to learn the hip hinge. To get your hands to or closer to the floor, reach towards your toes (being mindful not to round your back) and get your rear end out of the way. These are literally the most common cues to deadlift a barbell which is a form of powerlifting. If you have unexplained low back pain, try not rounding your back for a week and see what happens.

Because if you don’t start paying attention to what you do most of the day, the 4 percent of your day you spend in the gym won’t prevent you from having pain. You have the ability to be your own advocate. We only get one body in this life, take care of it!
Another pain that can usually be prevented is upper back or thoracic pain. Again, it could be from a number of problems, but once your doctor has told you they don’t see any reason for

Do you cradle your phone between your shoulder and head, do you look down to text or to just look at your phone all day, or do you have a job in front of the computer and are sitting all day? The answer to fixing these problems really are found in the questions themselves. Don’t have your phone lower than eye level, don’t keep it between your shoulder and ear, and for the love of all that is holy stand up every so often and sit without slouching! Strong Knees = Happy on Skis PROTECT YOUR BODY SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE SKI SEASON!
BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, ACE CPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY
Your Goals Are Our Priority! Knee pain and injury are common among skiers of all ability levels. By understanding the factors that contribute to 30 percent of snow sport related injuries, it becomes easier to develop a plan for injury prevention. Some common areas of knee pain for skiers include: pain under the patellar or kneecap region, pain behind the knee, lateral knee pain and medial knee pain, which is the most reported. Kneecap pain is usually the result of skiing too much in the back seat or skiing with stiff legs (not absorbing bumps). The angle of the knee behind the feet results in shearing forces between the patella and the tibia. To prevent this, shift your trunk forward in strong athletic stance and stay centered over your skis. Keeping quad muscles strong is important. Squats, both single and double leg, as well as single leg balancing exercises can help keep thigh muscles strong and balanced and help with proper balance and stance on skis. Pain behind the knee can be a result of poor balance. The calf muscle attaches behind the knee, and when a skier loses balance, he or she may try and compensate by flexing the foot and ankle, putting extra strain on the lower leg muscles. Keeping a strong core and performing ankle balance exercises can be very helpful. Pain on the medial side of the knee can be a result of muscle imbalance caused by strong and/or tight lateral leg muscles and weaker inner thigh and medial thigh muscles. Exercising inner leg muscles by performing reverse step-ups and side lying leg lifts strengthens this muscle group. It can also be beneficial to stretch the IT band, which is the large tendon that spans from the lateral hip down to the lateral side of the knee. Use a foam roller and side hip stretching to loosen the IT band.
wants to keep moving forward when the skis slow down. Hamstring muscles are key players in deceleration, and keeping them strong and stretched is super important. Make sure to always do a good hamstring stretch during and at the end of the day. Also consider foam rolling the hamstrings and quads prior to exercise to ensure the muscles are warmed up properly. These muscle groups should be strengthened both concentrically (muscles getting shorter) and eccentrically (muscle contracts as it elongates). 1. The number one way to prevent ski injuries is to strengthen the leg muscles prior to the season starting. 2. Ski a warm-up run and ski easier at the end of the day when legs are fatigued and the snow conditions have changed.

3. Do regular stretching before, during and after skiing. Legs can quickly get cold and tight just on the chairlift ride. 4. Use gear that fits well and is tuned up. Think of knicks and scrapes on your skis or board like waves on an ocean. The bigger they are, the rougher the ride. 5. Check binding settings. Do not set too high, better your skis come off than your knees twisted into pretzels. Hope to see you safe and injury free this ski season. Ryanne will be instructing up at Schweitzer Mountain this winter. If you have any questions, please stop in and see her.

New Year, New You
It’s that time of year again and many of us are looking back at Thanksgiving feasts and holiday over-indulgences and vowing to ourselves to get “back on track” come the first of the year. The majority of New Year’s resolutions include weight-loss goals, but why do 92 percent of us fail? The answer: It’s not that easy.
NOT ANOTHER WEIGHT LOSS PLAN
Familiar with the term “stubborn weight?” Me too. The majority of people who seek out dietetic services are those who have already tried calories in, calories out, but the real problem is not their calorie intake; it’s hormone imbalances, micronutrient deficiencies, poor gut flora, overactive immune responses and generalized inflammation that is enabling their body to not fully utilize the nutrients from the foods they are eating – even when they are eating healthy foods!
BY DARCI BARMAN, REGISTERED DIETICIAN NUTRITIONIST
Why is this? The Standard American Diet (SAD) is dominated by food laden with sugars, pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics and hormones. With all the additives, preservatives, colors and sweeteners we eat in a day, it’s no wonder our metabolic fire is having a

hard time burning. The solution? An Elimination Diet. An Elimination Diet focuses on eliminating what harms and replenishing what heals. Eliminating foods such as corn, soy, gluten, dairy, nightshades, caffeine, alcohol and a few others while including bone broths, cultured vegetables and heavy doses of anti-inflammatory herbs and spices to restore optimal metabolic function, results in those “stubborn pounds” just melting away. Once you have eliminated these foods for a period of time, you strategically reintroduce them – noting any undesirable symptoms and excluding those foods – resulting in a customized diet that fits your specific health needs. Not only does the Elimination Diet help with weight loss and resetting a sluggish metabolism, but it has helped thousands of patients improve: • • • • • • •

• osteoporosis • asthma, sinus congestion and chronic coughing • migraines and headaches • autoimmune disease Where to Start The biggest challenge encountered when eliminating several food groups at once is the lack of education, knowledge and a plan to ensure adequate nutrient intake. That’s where a dietitian comes in. Dietitians can put together a plan for you that includes meal plans, recipes, food lists and supplements that can ease the overwhelming task of eliminating foods that dominate your current diet. They are trained to help guide patients through challenging, but rewarding lifestyle changes. Avoid Holiday Derailment ENJOY LOW-FAT COOKING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.
As the holiday season stretches on, you might start feeling a stretch in your waistline. While a decadent meal or two won’t hurt, weeks of cakes, pies, cookie trays and homemade fudge definitely take their toll. But you can make delicious holiday foods while still skimping on the fat and calories -- you just need the help of one surprising ingredient, yogurt. Yogurt’s far more than smoothies and granola - low-fat, organic yogurt can substitute for higher-fat dairy, oil, and shortening in recipes ranging from sour cream and onion dip to chocolate cake. Yogurt also provides protein and calcium, helping ease the guilt over an extra bite or two. Not sure how to start? Stonyfield Farm provides the following tips for subbing yogurt in recipes: • Reduce the calories in dips and dressings by swapping one cup of yogurt for one cup of mayonnaise or sour cream. Substituting low-fat organic yogurt for sour cream saves 46 grams of fat per cup.
• Skip the heavy cream, and use yogurt to thicken sauces. Just add a tablespoon of flour for every cup of yogurt. • Use less butter. Replace half the butter with half as much yogurt to save fat and calories. For example, if a cookie recipe calls for a cup of butter, use a half cup of butter with a quarter cup of yogurt, instead. • Use fewer eggs. If cholesterol’s a concern, try substituting a quarter cup of yogurt per egg, for up to two eggs per recipe. • Use yogurt instead of buttermilk. If you only use buttermilk in one recipe, try using one cup of yogurt for every cup of buttermilk. You can also use yogurt instead of milk or water, but know to expect richer, moister results. Start by replacing one-quarter of the liquid with yogurt. You can learn more about nutritious, delicious organic yogurt and find some fine recipes online at the Stonyfield Farm website, www.stonyfield.com.
• Use yogurt to tenderize meat. Yogurt also makes an excellent oil-free marinade.

SKI THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST
There’s a mountain out there for you! By Colin Anderson. Photos of Schweitzer Mountain Resort courtesy Schweitzer Mountain Resort. To put it bluntly, the 2014/2015 ski season was awful. Little snow and lots of rain add up to not a lot of fun out on the slopes. It happens from time to time, so let us all cross our fingers that it doesn’t happen again (you should have been doing your pray for snow dance months ago!). What’s wonderful about skiing in the west is even if the conditions are less than ideal, there are unique communities, resorts, activities and scenic drives to explore all over, not to mention enough mountains to keep you busy for a lifetime. There are options for those seeking the steepest chutes and deepest powder, lavish resorts with plush ski in/ski out accommodations. Small town mom and pop
