OUR MISSION AT LIVING LOCAL IS SIMPLE. It is to impact the communities we serve in a positive way by creating content that will connect the community with one another. It is an approach that has made us one of the most unique and trusted publications in the community and is something in which we take pride. We also realize it would not be possible without our clients and those in the community who have supported us along our journey. You have likely noticed that our publication is full of GOOD NEWS. It is here where you will find heartwarming stories of those people, organizations and businesses who are working to make this community a place people love to call home. Here you will not find anything political or controversial; those stories are for others to print. We love to bring stories that are unique; ones you will not find in other publications. In a world that finds many struggling, we enjoy bringing to the forefront the work of nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to bring

blessings to those who may be facing challenges in life. Our goal is to not only connect people in the community but also to inspire one another, perhaps provide ideas of how each one of us can give of our time and talents to make our home an even better place. As another year closes, we at Living Local reflect on how fortunate we are to connect with amazing people in the communities we serve. Thank you for sharing your stories with us as we continue to strive to connect and inspire one another! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and many blessings.

Taking Stock of Your Kitchen BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, DESIGNER AT SEVEN BEE INTERIORS, EXCLUSIVELY FOR PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER SANDPOINT FURNITURE\CARPET ONE\SELKIRK GLASS & CABINETS

W

ith the holidays in full swing, our attention at home naturally turns to the kitchen. The center of our homes, the kitchen is often the busiest room in the house. So it’s only natural that if we look to make any home improvements this time of year, our first thought is that our kitchens could use a little “sprucing up.” So many people are redoing their countertops these days. Granite and even quartz countertops are growing more affordable, and their durability can’t be beat. However, I often caution people against adding new countertops if their cabinetry is in sad shape, as eventually the cabinets will have to be replaced as well, and it just does not make sense to spend the money on counters if their cabinetry will not last for at least another 10 years. If this is the case with your kitchen, then my advice is to wait, do it properly and save for both new cabinets and countertops. You will not regret spending the extra money to have a whole new kitchen, even if it means a year or two longer with the old one!

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

However, if the cabinetry is solid and still functions properly (i.e. doors and drawers open and close nicely and the overall layout is acceptable), then a countertop upgrade is merited. If the cabinets still function and are solid but appear worn or dirty, then sometimes it can be a good idea to have them painted or refinished. However, if they are in good shape and clean but just “dated,” often just the addition of pretty hardware is all that’s needed to bring the cabinetry up to our current standards. Another upgrade option might include cabinets and laminate countertops that are still in relatively good shape but have a worn, water-stained wood backsplash that we find in so many houses from the ‘80s and ‘90s. In this case, an easy fix would be to remove the old wooden splash and replace it with some great hard-wearing tile that doesn’t break the bank and ties the whole look together. A qualified tile installer can have this done in as little as a day or two with minimal disturbance to the rest of the kitchen.

Often just the addition of pretty hardware is all that’s needed. Flooring works especially hard in a kitchen, taking a beating from spills, dishes dropping, trash going in and out, dish water, etc. There are some great new LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) products out there that can go right over existing sheet vinyl, worn hardwood or even tile, that can add a layer of durability and beauty to any decorating scheme. They usually go in quickly and easily, and this is an upgrade that can be done in as little as a day! My advice: Take stock of your kitchen, look around honestly and ask yourself what needs to be replaced, what can stay and what needs a little tweak to make it just right for you and your loved ones this holiday season. And always, if in doubt, contact a professional. Most of us are trained to take stock of what you already have while taking your wish list into account and come up with a game plan to make your dream kitchen a reality.

FINANCIAL FOCUS WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL? THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD.

I

t can be challenging to achieve your financial objectives. Fortunately, you don’t have to go it alone—but when should you seek help?

Here are some of the key life events in which you might be able to benefit from the services of a financial professional: First professional job – Eventually, you will land that first job, which will offer benefits and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. Since you may not have any experience with a 401(k), you may have several questions: How much should I contribute? What sorts of investments should I choose? When should I change my investment selections? A financial professional can help you review your plan and explain the aspects that may affect your investment choices. Marriage – When you get married, you and your spouse may decide to merge your finances, including your investments. But if each of you brings similar investments to the table, you might create some redundancies. A financial professional can look at your respective portfolios and recommend ways to diversify. Generally, the more diversified you are, the greater your protection against market downturns that primarily hit one type of asset class. (However, while diversification can help reduce the impact of market volatility, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Children – Once you have children, you’ll have new responsibilities—and you’ll have some new financial issues that should be addressed. If something happened to you, could your children still have the same lifestyle and educational opportunities? Would they even be able to stay in the same home? To help ensure your children’s security, you may need to add more life and disability insurance. While life insurance could help pay for your children’s education, you also should prepare for education costs as if you will be around. So you may want to consider an education savings investment such as a 529 plan. A financial professional can help you with your insurance and education-funding needs.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

26

Retirement – Once you retire, you will face a variety of financial decisions, but here’s one of the most important ones: How much money should you withdraw each year from your retirement accounts? To choose an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your needs, you should consider several factors: how much you have in your retirement accounts, how much Social Security you’ll receive, what other sources of income (such as part-time work or consulting) you might have, your age at retirement, your spouse’s projected retirement assets, your retirement lifestyle and so on. It might not be easy for you to consider all these elements and then arrive at a suitable withdrawal rate, but a financial professional has the experience, training and technology to help determine a figure that could work for you. These aren’t all the life events that may lead you to contact a financial professional, but they should give you a pretty good idea of the type of assistance you could expect over time. So, consider reaching out for the help you need, when you need it. Doing so could help make your life easier as you move toward your financial goals. connections to something we have in common and learn so much about one another,” said Shantelle. Living and teaching in North Idaho has afforded Shantelle a chance to learn more about rural life, something she credits her students with.

third-grade teacher at Northside Elementary, Shantelle Gillis teaches reading, writing, math and science but said what she finds most rewarding is the opportunity to share her passion for reading with her students. “Read-aloud time is my favorite part of the school day,” said Shantelle, who has taught for 13 years, 11 of which have been at Northside. “In third grade, it is my ultimate goal to get all my students to make the transition from reading picture books to reading chapter books. Sharing my own favorite children’s chapter books to model how exciting and fun reading can be is so important to me.” Shantelle shares that she reads the same chapter books each year, and the children always hold onto every word. From there she enjoys building on each child’s interests and finding them stories or authors that intrigue them enough to become what she calls “little reading machines.” “From a silly book like ‘Clementine’ to a much more serious ‘Number the Stars,’ books spark such great classroom discussions about life and lessons we can all learn. It allows us all to make

“I’ve had students and former students miss school to go shed antler hunting, witness their horse give birth and get their first elk or even a bear,” said Shantelle, adding that she enjoys going to the fair every August to see those involved in 4-H. “Life for my students is different than for many other children, and I love when my students share their experiences with me and allow me to learn from them.” She said she loves the Northside school and the community atmosphere there. Her oldest daughter just started kindergarten at Northside, and Shantelle said she is thrilled that her own family now gets to experience the special “country” school that she has taught at for the past 11 years. Building relationships is something that Shantelle said is important to her as a teacher and a value she hopes to pass onto her students. “I have a plaque in my classroom that my husband had made for me that says: ‘They may not remember what you teach them, but they will always remember how you treat them.’ I strive to live by this message with my students and convey the importance of this as they cultivate relationships with each other,” she said. “Treat one another with kindness and respect.”

The Basic Obedience Myth

Why tradition sets us up for failure

BY STEPHANIE VICHINSKY, OWNER AND HEAD TRAINER OF UNITED K9

M

y husband and I are very committed to making our local community a better place, not only for dogs but their owners as well. Last night we sat down to dinner and asked the question, “Why are dog owners struggling?” It might be easy to answer: “They’re not professional dog trainers,” or “They just don’t have the skills they need,” but during our conversation, we agreed that there is a much bigger issue involved. Of course there is a matter of accessible information. We do our best to provide as much free information as possible, but whether information is available or not, there is still a gap. This gap is largely due to tradition or what I like to call the Basic Obedience Myth. If you've read my work or heard me speak, you’ll know I don’t put a whole lot of emphasis on basic obedience. While it is a helpful stepping stone to long-term success, it cannot be the end goal. I receive dozens of phone calls and emails each day from owners with obedient dogs, but the obedience is not stopping the barking, the digging, the aggression, the anxiety, the fear, the pushiness. A sitting dog can easily be sitting and aggressive, sitting and excited, sitting and fearful. The physical mechanics of sitting isn’t solving the problem. So why do we continue to give basic obedience our time and money? Tradition.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Tradition tells us that obedience is all we need because that’s how Mom and Dad did it, how Grandma and Grandpa did it, the great grandparents before them did it, and the myth has been passed along for decades. Dog training has evolved steadily in the last 50 years, and it has evolved at light speed in the last 10. We are now able to break down every single part of dog behavior. We are able to understand the reasons our dogs act the way they do, and more importantly, the incredibly thought-out steps we can take to help them. Dogs are complex, emotional and incredible animals that are capable of understanding much more than we give them credit for, but when we rely on basic obedience (sit, down, come, heel, stay), we are only speaking one small fraction of a language. I can’t imagine trying to raise my child in a world where she can only understand one out of every 10 words I speak. When training dogs, there is so much more to it than the words we use. Every movement of our body sends a message to our dogs—every pass of the leash, every emotional interchange.

28

We are now able to break down every

single part of dog

behavior. We are able to understand the reasons our dogs

act the way they do

Merry Christmas! We have to look at the big picture and avoid isolating pieces of it. We need to stop, evaluate our dogs and ask questions. What drives my dog? What scares it? What calms it? W

ith the holidays upon us, the excitement is high for kids and parents alike. It’s the time of year when we gather together with family and friends and celebrate all things Christmas. And if you live in North Idaho, it also means it’s time to hit the ski slopes and enjoy world-class skiing right in our backyard. So if you want to enjoy a day of recreation at the mountain and at the same time make sure your wish list gets to Santa, why stand in those long lines to sit on Santa’s lap in a big shopping mall when you can take a few runs with him, Mrs. Claus and his helper at Schweitzer Mountain. On December 23 from 1 to 3pm, head on up to Schweitzer where you can visit with Santa and even have the chance to ski with him as he prepares for his trip around the world!

BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTESY OF SCHWEITZER MOUNTAIN RESORT

“Santa usually spends time with the kids in the lobby of the Selkirk Lodge, typically on December 23,” said Dig Chrismer, marketing manager for Schweitzer Mountain Resort. “Mrs. Claus reads a story and then they have cookies and hot chocolate while one of the local choirs serenades us with holiday carols. It’s so much fun—and the kids love it!” If you can’t make it then, no worries, as Santa will return December 24 from 1 to 5pm and will also lead a balloon parade from the top of the Basin Express chairlift to the village. In what has become a holiday tradition for many families, Schweitzer Mountain Resort enjoys hosting Santa and Mrs. Claus year after year. Mark your calendars and join in this fun-filled event. And be sure to bring along your wish list. See you at the mountain!

hat started out as a desire to become the ultimate ski bum quickly turned into a success story for a young entrepreneur. Ben Higgs, owner of Powder Hound Pizza at Schweitzer Mountain and The Hound Downtown, moved to Sandpoint from Coeur d’Alene 11 years ago drawn by the wonderful skiing opportunities Schweitzer Mountain offers. Not long afterward, he purchased his first restaurant, Powder Hound Pizza, in 2010, at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. Five years later, he opened a second restaurant, The Hound Downtown, which opened in March of 2015. Both restaurants quickly earned a reputation for providing quality food and service, not to mention it has one of the best beer and wine selections in town for full-service restaurants. While pizza is their specialty, there is much more on the menu to tempt you. They serve a variety of sandwiches—including meatballs with marinara, Reuben, a BLT, and yes … even tofu. If you prefer a salad, you can select from kale, Greek, Caesar and house salads available in both half and full sizes. Other favorites include their chicken wings and ribs, which go great

with a cold beer while you watch your favorite sporting event on one of their TVs. And then there is the pizza. Whether you build your own or choose from one of their specialty pizzas, it is something that will keep you coming back for more. Some of the more popular selections include BBQ chicken, Thors Hammer, which is an all-meat pizza, spicy Thai and Cuban pork, just to name a few. They offer both thin crust and gluten-free pizza crust for all their pizzas, making it enjoyable for all who may have special dietary needs.

By offering consistent, quality food and a great atmosphere where people love to gather, Ben and his wife Jeannie have seen great success at both of their restaurants. They are also grateful to the support and love they have received from the community throughout their venture. Both Ben and Jeannie give back to the community that has supported them—Ben sits on the board of directors for Schweitzer Mountain Community Association and Jeannie is a board member for the Nordic Club and also coaches some of the youth.

With a friendly staff and fun atmosphere, The Hound Downtown and Powder Hound Pizza at Schweitzer Mountain are a favorite of many, whether you are coming in after a day on the slopes or seeking a place to sit outside in the summertime.

Next time you are on the mountain or downtown, discover why The Hound Downtown and Powder Hound Pizza were named the winner of Sandpoint’s Finest Pizza in 2017. After that first bite, there will leave no doubt that the award was well deserved!

Open year round, The Hound Downtown offers an outdoor patio in the heart of downtown. If you are out on the water, it provides a perfect location to dock your boat and grab a bite to eat.

You can call ahead your order for takeout or dine in at either location. I promise, you will return time and time again!

Animals in Transition

New programs support animals and pet owners throughout the community and beyond

W

hat once was an overburdened animal shelter has now become one that is cutting edge and nationally recognized ARTICLE PROVIDED BY due to the introduction of new PANHANDLE ANIMAL SHELTER programs, and, of course, community support.

“Dr. Newbury’s advice and support helped us better understand why outbreaks and illnesses occur in shelters and how the flow of animals through the shelter makes a significant impact to health, welfare and even the bottom line,” said Evans.

In the “old days,” the majority of animals at Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS) in Ponderay were housed long term, sometimes for months and even years, until new families were found. The stress on the animals and the impact on their health and the shelter staff were overall unsustainable. They knew they needed to change.

The PAS team then began to look at its culture and the messaging that was being projected onto the community. They realized that they were inadvertently being judgmental and shaming people who were seeking their help; not overtly, but through policies that were counterproductive to an open and trusting relationship. They realized that they could not ask for the community’s support when they were not supporting the community and their animals to the best of their ability.

Often, they can avoid a pet being surrendered Those involved with the shelter began to ask themselves: “Could we do this better?” “What needs by solving a to change?” “Can it change, and if we do change, how problem that do we go about it?” may seem “The key was being vulnerable and admitting we did not know the answers and sometimes even the right insurmountable questions to ask,” recalls Executive Director Mandy Evans. to an owner. The tide began to turn when Evans consulted Dr. Sandra Newbury, DVM and director of the University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine program. These consult calls were a game changer for the shelter.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

34

“Once we had identified these problems, Panhandle Animal Shelter set out to make changes,” said Evans. “Many of these changes had not yet been accepted by the sheltering community at large and were considered on the forefront of the industry.” Some changes were counter intuitive, such as limiting admission into the shelter. One would think by not accepting all animals they would reduce the number of animals helped, but that was not the case. In the past, overcrowding led to illness.

non-judgmental way. Often, they can avoid a pet being surrendered by solving a problem that may seem insurmountable to an owner. The Home to Home Program also came out of PAS’s need to better serve the community. In an effort to address a significant uptick in animal surrenders, they created a program that allows pet owners to find new homes for their animals without the animal ever having to enter the shelter. “By limiting the number of animals housed at any given time, the shelter tripled the number of animals served and reduced the average length of stay by a month and a half,” said Evans. The shelter team didn’t want to say no to people who needed help with their animal, so they created three new programs to directly support the community outside the shelter—Adoption Ambassador Foster Program, the Helpline and Home to Home. The Adoption Ambassador program allowed people with kittens the opportunity to foster them while PAS paid for their care, plus they encouraged these compassionate families to find new homes for them while they were being fostered. The Helpline and Home to Home programs support people who need to surrender their pets. Evans shares that while many get upset at the idea of people surrendering their pet, sometimes it is best for the pet and necessary for the family, usually due to a change in economic situation, change in relationship and change in health.

“Owners create an online profile which is shared on the Home-Home. org network and on our Shelter Facebook page,” said Evans. “This allows us to leverage our community to support and bring attention to the animal. Adopters communicate directly with pet owners. The program is free to pet owners and adopters, and no money changes hands.” The program also allows shelters to help animals outside of their charter. PAS has found homes for birds, pocket pets, horses and farm animals all with a 60-percent success rate. Only 20 percent of Home to Home clients end up surrendering their pets to a shelter. “This innovative program and approach to helping animals has helped PAS become a national organization with over 10 organizations throughout the nation onboard and another 22 in the pipeline. This expansion was due to a grant from Maddie’s Fund,” said Evans. Though PAS has expanded to increase lifesaving throughout the country, they stay true to their community. 2019 will bring a new off-leash dog park with the support of donors and the City of Ponderay. This will provide health benefits to not only the community dogs, but their owners, too.

“The people surrendering their beloved pets are in a fragile, vulnerable state and seeking help at a very difficult time,” said Evans. “The worst thing anyone can do is blame them for their choice. By having a ‘No Shaming Policy,’ we open ourselves up to everyone’s pain, story and need.”

Evans shares that the changes PAS has implemented have gone a long way to increase efficiency, improve medical care and help to provide a more stress-free approach to animals in transition.

PAS is devoted to helpings pets and their families stay together and creating new pet families in the community in a supportive, open and

“The advancements here have been due to the immense community support we receive,” said Evans. “Appreciation is not lacking at PAS.”

ooking forward, successful convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) will be a driving force behind business-growth initiatives. Through the integration of these two disciplines, companies can utilize real data to drive efficiencies and productivity that will accelerate product-to-market times and boost demand while reducing costs and risks. It also creates opportunities for economic growth that strengthen communities. While operational technology brings value to the manufacturing industry through sensors and devices, information technology supports the software used to process the required information to manufacture products and run the business.

Overcoming challenges posed by the traditionally competing priorities of the two groups is crucial to successful convergence; these include merging strategies, governance and protocol, as well as security and data. Two Inland Northwest companies are leading the charge with significant examples of how IT/OT convergence creates competitive advantages and fuels innovation. Litehouse, Inc. For Litehouse, a longtime food and beverage manufacturer, necessity was the mother of invention. In order to meet customer demands and increase sales positioning, the company needed to improve the quality and accuracy of

SandpointLivingLocal.com

package labeling by utilizing data and reducing manual processes. Other contributing factors included numerous variations in labeling requirements for individual customers as well as bridging the skills gap at their five manufacturing plants in Idaho, Michigan and Utah. In the previous methods, workers did not have access to a single source of data and had to rely on manual processes. For shipping-box labeling, customer-specific information was manually punched into a kiosk at the end of the production line and labels were spray coded onto each box. Pillow prints required changing out plates on a system similar to an old-style letter press for proper embossing. This was both time consuming and prone to errors that ultimately drove up costs and limited product distribution.

SANDPOINT IN FOCUS THE KEY TO POWERING FUTURE INNOVATION INLAND NORTHWEST TECHNOLOGY PROS ASSOCIATION AND IT/OT CONVERGENCE BY JULIE BERRETH, TURNBUCKLE STRATEGY & DESIGN PHOTOS COURTESY OF LITEHOUSE , INC.

Solutions proposed by printing-equipment manufacturers were costly and inefficient, requiring the creation and maintenance of a combined 900-plus label images and templates, as well as the purchase of additional equipment and software licenses. According to Derek Christensen, senior director of information technology, the company decided to assemble an in-house IT/ OT team to define the project’s requirements. Through this collaboration, the team found they were able to build and deploy an affordable print-and-apply labeling system for two forms of packaging by combining capabilities of existing IT and OT systems. Christensen says this plan was also scalable and highly

maintainable, taking only five months to fully implement. The new system utilizes Litehouse’s ERP program to pull customer-specific job data to generate labels that pass through centralized security firewalls as they are sent to the plant printers. Production workers now have the flexibility to edit labels before packaging is complete to ensure accuracy. The implementation of this print-and-apply label system through IT/OT convergence has resulted in overwhelming benefits, not just for Litehouse’s business operations but for employees as well, according to Christensen. With the means to automatically print labels

SandpointLivingLocal.com

39

directly on the production line, operator setup times have decreased from 10 minutes to 10 seconds for every job run. This new smartmanufacturing environment has expanded the company’s sales positioning by giving them the ability to meet the demands of existing customers and gain new ones more effectively. Immediate cost savings included tens of thousands of dollars in equipment purchases and a 50-percent reduction in software-license fees. Most importantly, the new system created consistency and accuracy that increased Litehouse’s credibility, thereby generating greater product demand by demonstrating their ability to meet exact customer requirements for how the product arrives.

Litehouse’s leadership was instrumental in fostering an inclusive environment of open communication that bridged the relationships between IT and OT. Short-term benefits were presented to all stakeholders early in the process to inspire the group. Conscientious management of the team and their tasks resulted in an innovative solution that would positively impact the entire business going forward. Hecla Mining Company Hecla Mining Company’s IT/OT convergence was motivated by their commitment to improving safety while creating efficiencies and reducing costs to stay competitive. Hecla needed the ability to perform mining tasks remotely to enhance the well-being of their workers while increasing productivity. Controlling equipment and related maintenance costs were also vital to achieving business objectives. Brock Tenney, IT operations supervisor, says the convergence team worked together, pulling from their areas of expertise to identify off-theshelf components that were robust enough to handle industrial equipment operations and suitable to the harsh underground environment. Their solution required almost no intervention from IT for deployment, and most importantly, allowed for local decisions underground. Battery-powered distribution points were daisy-chained from Hecla’s existing network with powered fiber cabling throughout the mines to relay data and pull power from their main distribution points. Wireless access points using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology minimized the number of cables that had to be strung. Hecla can now perform autonomous and tele-remote mining, as well as execute network-based remote blasting from within offices on the surface. Personnel, along with environmental conditions, such as temperature and gas levels, are monitored in real time, optimizing safety and reducing

SandpointLivingLocal.com

risks. Equipment is tracked and scheduled for routine maintenance based on actual data to decrease costs and create efficiencies. Tenney, who led the convergence team, believes leadership must be willing to be bold, try new solutions and demonstrate how they can improve work processes to create a global benefit. He says curious people ask questions that can be a catalyst for change. Underground-worker concerns about the level of monitoring were quickly alleviated once they were able to use the tools and see the benefits for themselves. In fact, former employees who stay in touch with Tenney have expressed that without these types of tools and technology at their new jobs, they are less productive and feel less empowered. He also credits the project’s success to setting and managing expectations, along with open communication that promotes an environment of contribution and collaboration to make better products and improve lives. With attrition trends widening the skills gap, businesses must turn to technology and automated processes to grow effectively. IT/OT initiatives, by design, will create new roles that help businesses attract employees, as well as advance and retain current staffing, while driving innovation that encourages economic progress. Inland Northwest Technology Pros Association is making a difference in the IT industry by enabling competitive advantages that act as a cornerstone of economic development in the community. “I have been swimming since around fifth grade,” said Mikayla. She has gone to state each year since her freshman year and recently brought home four gold medals from districts as well as helped the girIs’ team win districts overall. She went on to have a fabulous showing at state where she won the state title in the 100 freestyle by .18 seconds and finished second in the 50 free by .33 seconds. She also teamed up with her teammates to win the 200 free relay. On the honor roll each semester throughout high school, Mikayla said that working to keep her grades up help her to perform her best both in and out of the pool. A junior, Mikayla is currently undecided on what school she will attend. “I do believe

that I want to swim in college,” said Mikayla, who plans to major in pediatric nursing. “Swimming has become a part of my daily life, so I think I should keep it that way.” Mikayla said what she enjoys most about swimming is the fact it is an individual sport. Yet, the mental aspect is a challenge. “This sport isn't just about the physical game but your mental game as well. When my body gets tired and worn down, I have to engage the positivity in my mind in order to be able to finish strong,” said Mikayla. One lesson that swimming has taught Mikayla is that when she is tired, that is when she has to push her hardest. “Unlike several other sports, when you're exhausted or need a break to breathe or grab some water, you don't have the option to go sit on the bench until you're ready to be put back in; that is the time that you have to dig deep and find that fifth gear inside you and use that to push you to go faster.”

hen it comes to all-around dedication, Ephriam Weisz is a perfect example. An honor roll student throughout high school, Ephriam also perseveres when it comes to athletics. His coach, Matt Brass, said that Ephriam began running as a freshman with no prior experience and, by his junior year, was one of the team’s top runners. Even more important is that he has been fully committed since joining. “He has missed less than five practices in cross country and track, including off-season conditioning, in four years,” said Brass. “He also has been one of the best athletes we have ever had at welcoming in new runners, making them feel like they are part of a team and teaching them how we train. He will be sorely missed next year for both his performance and his mentoring.”

Ephriam said that he finds the mental aspect of running to be the most challenging, but he overcomes that by focusing on his teammates and his team’s goals. But running is also therapeutic to him. “It gives me the time to think,” he said. He is grateful to all the opportunities that cross country and track have given to him, and Ephriam said he has learned a very important life lesson from his coaches over the past four years. “Remember to be grateful for every opportunity we get in life.”

Ephriam was a three-year top-10 finisher at regionals and won regionals his junior year. And as a sophomore in track, he was third in the 3200. Although undecided as to where he will attend college, Ephriam said he would like to study psychology and hopes to receive a master’s degree. “I’m interested in psychology because I think it’s interesting to understand people and what leads them to be who they are.”

THEY SPOKE. THE CITY LISTENED. DOWNTOWN SANDPOINT REVITALIZATION PROJECT PROPOSAL GIVES STOREOWNERS NEW HOPE FOR 2019

BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS BY KIERSTEN PATTERSON

I

t’s been an interesting past two summers with construction, reversion to two-way streets and more for the Downtown Sandpoint area. While commuters may have found it to be an inconvenience, downtown business owners have felt a much larger and direct impact on their day-to-day operations, especially given the fact that construction typically takes place during their busiest season from May through October. So, when the City of Sandpoint began to plan for another phase of construction next year, they carefully considered the impact it would have on our local businesses in the downtown corridor. Working together to come up with a proposal that would not only work within their budget and allow them to do construction during the non-summer months but would also not devastate the local business economy was a challenge. But Sandpoint Mayor Shelby Rognstad, Sandpoint City Administrator Jennifer Stapleton and Public Works Director Amanda Wilson, who was hired earlier this year, weighed many options and presented their proposal in late October to a group of downtown business owners and interested citizens. “Our goal is to have the least amount of impact on local businesses as possible,” said Mayor Rognstad to the crowd who had gathered.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Stapleton said that the need for urgency to start the project in 2019 was two-fold. First, there is failing infrastructure that needs replaced, and second, the funding for this project is through a CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) and SURA (Sandpoint Urban Renewal Agency) grant, both of which require that the project be completed within a certain timeframe. At the time of the presentation, Stapleton assured the group that a contract had not yet been signed or committed to, and the City of Sandpoint wants to work together with business owners for a solution that benefits everyone. “We’ve listened to your concerns,” Stapleton told the business owners.

We listened to the concerns regarding } traffic, dust and the impact on businesses

Among those concerns that the city acknowledged during its presentation are that when construction takes place, it appears businesses within that zone are closed, there is limited access to businesses, the overall atmosphere of the construction zone may deter people from the area, the location of the portable toilets, the fact there is less parking and the significant amount of dust that is created from moving vehicles or loads of dirt being delivered. There are also considerable challenges for delivery trucks. The bottom line, said Wilson, is that there is a reduction in sales, something which can be devastating to a downtown business during the peak season. “And it’s not just about the profits,” said Wilson. “We all take a lot of pride in our town, and we want to be successful as a community.” When brainstorming to come up with a solution, Stapleton said she instructed everyone to throw out all assumptions about construction, such as that it can only be done in the warm summer months, and start from scratch. And the fact that Wilson had a background in construction management was a significant help. “We listened to the concerns regarding traffic, dust and the impact on businesses and asked questions such as, ‘Can work be done at night? Can work be done in winter?’” said Stapleton. With the next phase of the project going from First Avenue and Church Street, down First to the intersection of Cedar and Second Avenue, there

were many businesses on hand anxiously awaiting to hear what the City of Sandpoint proposed for next year. And while a handful of attendees had questions and suggestions for City of Sandpoint management, many left feeling relieved about the upcoming tourist season and its impact on their business. Deanna Harris, owner of Sharon’s Hallmark in Downtown Sandpoint, said not only was she very pleased with the city’s proposal but was also happy to see so many business owners and community members come to the meeting. “Many of the businesses provided feedback to city officials throughout this past summer's project,” said Harris. “It appears that they really listened to this input and have made changes to the original construction plan that will definitely help businesses.” Harris said the limited parking availability and the noise, dust and chaos of the project were definitely some of the business owners’ concerns. In addition, as Wilson said, there is the issue of how to overcome the perception that either businesses were closed or not accessible. Wilson talked about a banner across First Avenue, something Harris thought was a great idea. “We have even talked about a ‘roll out the red carpet’ theme where we would have red carpet runners in front of businesses and really work together to make it evident we are open and ready for business,” she said.

Outlining the proposal with a PowerPoint presentation, Wilson said the plan would involve delaying the start of construction until after Labor Day in 2019, with First Avenue being closed to motor vehicle traffic but open to pedestrians for the month of September. “We would have the curb-to-curb construction completed by October 31, 2019, said Wilson of the project that will eventually be storefront to storefront. Depending upon the weather in November, they may or may not be able to have concrete sidewalks over the winter, but they will definitely be five-foot sidewalks with a hard surface, asphalting them for the winter time if concrete cannot be poured. While actual construction will not begin until after Labor Day, there are things that

will be worked on in the spring, some which are not related to the actual street project. Stapleton said the city is currently working with Avista to transfer the overhead power lines to underground, something which will take place in the spring, similar to the Oak Street project which occurred earlier this year. The City of Sandpoint also plans to award the construction contract by June so that preparation of ordering materials and more can be done over the summer months.

There will be no motor vehicle traffic or parking allowed in the construction area until paving is done, a move aimed at reducing the amount of dust in the area. Wilson also said there will be construction staging areas for materials and portable toilets, and there will also be designated delivery times and locations. They also plan to provide better signage to make both locals and visitors aware that businesses are open during construction.

Wilson outlined other plans to reduce the impact on local businesses, one of which is to provide incentives to the contractors if they complete the project ahead of time. Conversely, there will be penalties if the completion dates are not met. In addition, by allowing the contractors to work 24/7, the project should be able to be completed in the shorter time period.

The city will hold another public meeting in the spring, which, according to Wilson, should be sometime around March, to update the community on plans. They will also advertise for bids for the project at this time. They will then hold another public meeting in August to update everyone again.

Locally owned and operated by CO-OP Gas & Supply Company (a farm cooperative based in Sandpoint and serving all of North Idaho), since its launch, Co-Op Energy’s focus has been to provide the community another energy option, competitive prices, better service and local connection. “The community needed a reliable source of propane energy unaffiliated with any outside corporation,” says Rich Fiellen, Co-op Energy manager. “Co-op Gas & Supply was uniquely positioned to provide this option. Do Your Homework

Know what your fitness or nutrition coach’s credentials really mean

By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS, Owner, CrossFit Sandpoint YOU MAY HAVE READ MY RECENT ARTICLE REGARDING THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING A COACH to help you achieve your fitness and nutrition goals. But did you know that the fitness and nutrition industry is one of the worst when it comes to qualifications?

Right, and that mindset and situation is exactly how we’ve gotten to the place we are in. Trusting that a trainer or coach knows what they are doing has gotten a whole lot of people hurt. An exercise professional should lie on the continuum of health and wellness professionals, not be an outlier.

Literally, in less than a few hours, you could look up and find an online certification, skim through their material, pass their online test and call yourself a trainer. You could buy insurance and hang up the sign on your personal training studio by this afternoon.

Where an orthopedic surgeon makes repairs to the body via surgery and manually returning things back to the way they should be, a physical therapist establishes corrective movements and manual therapy externally to restore proper range of motion and pain-free function to those joints. A qualified exercise professional should continue that path and strengthen those parts, allowing them to be used optimally and prevent further injury.

Compare that to our brothers and sisters in body mechanics and physical training. Physical therapists require three years of specialized school in addition to their initial college degree. Chiropractors are similar.

Outside the context of rehabilitation, this continuum still exists, but the starting point differs. In my field, we should be evaluating “healthy” people to make sure they are in fact moving in ways that will provide them the best vehicle for success long term, fixing the things that fall within our scope of

You may be thinking to yourself, “Yeah, but those are medical professionals, trainers are just trainers.”

practice, like limited range of motion, strength imbalances and glaring weaknesses, then leading a person down the path toward their best physical version of themselves. Unfortunately the state of affairs and regulation within fitness and nutrition does not allow for the professional coach to be differentiated from the trainer. The online trained coach is seen on the same plane as the pro who has been through schooling and has legitimate credentials. How are you as the consumer supposed to navigate that landscape to ensure you don’t end up in the wrong hands? You just need to do your homework. If you are interested in hiring a fitness or nutrition coach, you should: • Interview them, ask them questions. You’ll get a feel. • Do your research on their credentials. Just look up the letters or credentials they have listed on their website. • Do your research on their experience. You don’t want to be their crash-test dummy. Make sure they’ve done this before. • Ask around. Reputations can tell you a lot. *A quick note on credentials, certifications,

seminars, etc. There are a ton of fantastic weekend certifications out there. That’s somewhat the nature of this industry. These just require an objective eye. Understand that there are two sides to that story. One side is that they spent about 16 hours learning something that they may or may not use as a tool. That’s good. The other side is that it was really only 16 hours and that one of those should really just be one of their tools. I tend to be skeptical of the onetrick ponies, where they’ve only got a series of certifications from one body. It’s important to be well rounded and know other approaches to fitness. On a similar note, another way to look at this industry is as a self-guided post-graduate program. Someone who has taken a class on Shakespeare does not mean they are qualified to instruct you on how to be a playwright. However, if someone took the initiative to say, “Hey, there really isn’t an established way to do that, so I’m going to do it on my own by taking as many courses and reading as many books as I can,” that’d be someone you might look to, respect and value their opinion. The takeaway from all of this is to understand that not all fitness and nutrition coaches are equal, that it’s up to you do to your homework, and that it’s time to demand more from the people in this industry.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO We answer your most asked questions about Botox BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA

A

recent study conducted by Allergan, the pharmaceutical company that produces Botox, found that 100 percent of women, aged 26 to 55, are aware of Botox Cosmetic. It’s pretty fascinating when you think about the fact that every single woman in that age group is aware of a single drug that is used to treat wrinkles. What many of the women in that same group did not know, however, is how the drug works, how much it costs, how long it lasts and what to expect during a Botox treatment. Many women, and men, are surprised to find how simple, quick and easy a Botox treatment is. Below we answer some of the most frequently asked questions. How exactly does Botox work? Botox works by blocking the synapse that sends the message from the nerve to the muscle to contract. Because that communication circuit has been broken, the injected muscle is not able to contract, which in turn causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. Over the next three to four months, new nerve connections are naturally created within the treatment area, and the muscle slowly gets movement back. Are Botox treatments painful? No. A very small needle is used to inject Botox. Many clients find the treatment to be very well tolerated and do not experience any discomfort. A typical treatment only takes a few minutes and involves superficial injections of the Botox into the

desired treatment area. Numbing cream can be applied prior to your treatment if discomfort is a concern.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to hear about our monthly specials.

How long does Botox last? Botox takes two to 14 days to become effective and lasts three to four months on average. Many clients find that with continued treatments they can go longer between appointments. Is there any social downtime after Botox injections? No. Most clients leave the office with small bumps at the injection sites, and they go away in 10 to 15 minutes. It is possible that you could get a small bruise, but unlikely. Many clients do their treatment on their lunch break and return to work immediately. You need to avoid vigorous exercise the day of your treatment, and do not massage your face for eight to 12 hours after your treatment (use very gentle pressure while washing your face). How much does Botox cost? The price of Botox varies from practice to practice. On average Botox is $11 per unit. The amount of Botox a person needs also varies from person to person. Generally, the area between the eyebrows (frown lines) requires 20 units, the forehead 10 to 12 units and the crow’s feet 12 units/side. Men typically need more Botox than women to have the same effect. Botox can also be used in other areas of the face. Consult with your aesthetic provider to discuss other common treatment areas. Is Botox safe? Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval in 2002 and is approved for use in over 75 countries. There have been more than 500 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals, and it is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind. There were over 7 million Botox Cosmetic treatments performed last year alone, and the medical community considers it to be low risk and safe. When done conservatively and dosed appropriately, Botox can help to soften wrinkles and prevent deep lines from forming, without making you look unnatural or frozen. Consult your aesthetic provider to discuss if Botox Cosmetic is right for you, and learn how you can look refreshed, youthful and rested.

B

onner General Health’s Immediate Care Clinic (BGIC) is here for you when you need care quickly but don’t need an emergency room. No appointment is necessary; we are open seven days a week, Monday through Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm. We are closed on Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas day.

Beaver and Rebecca have three children, Zoe age 9, Benjamin age 6 and Liberty age 3. James Lathrop, DNP is originally from Texas. He graduated high school from Boise High. James joined the U.S. Army and spent 11 years on active duty and four years on active reserve as an OR tech, line medic and eventually Army Nurse Corps. He graduated with a BSN from Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas. He earned a MS in information systems at Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, a MSN from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, Texas, and his DNP from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona. James spent the last 10 years in Oklahoma.

The care team at BGIC is led by Beaver Eller, FNP and James Lanthrop, DNP. We wanted to take this opportunity to let our community get to know a little bit about Beaver and James’s background, education and family. Beaver Eller, FNP is originally from Trout Creek, Montana. After graduating high school, he studied airplane mechanics and EMT in Georgia. He graduated with his RN/BSN in 2003. He also graduated as an adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner and family nurse practitioner in 2013.

James’s career in the medical field began as a civilian EMT. He wanted to learn more and be able to do more. The military solidified his desire to learn, so he kept going back to school.

Beaver met his wife, Rebecca (also RN/BSN), in nursing school. They worked in emergency rooms in Arizona, where Beaver also became a pilot. Beaver and Rebecca went back and forth to Mongolia for several years working on a medical mission aviation project. They both chose the medical field because their hearts are in missions where medical care is always needed.

James wanted to move back to Idaho and preferred not living in a city. He has always loved the mountains and, after a close call with a tornado over a year ago, he started seriously looking at moving. James’s primary specialty has been family practice, with a couple of years in emergency medicine and pain management. He is able to apply all of his subspecialties on a daily basis at BGIC, making it a great fit. James also works in the Occupational Health Department at BGH.

Beaver and his family moved back to Trout Creek, Montana, to help his mom after his father died. His family has loved the great Northwest and the Sandpoint/Ponderay community.

James and his wife Cynthia have been married for almost 20 years. They don’t have children but they do have a German Shepherd and a Border Collie, and a few cats they have had for a number of years. Cynthia really enjoys this beautiful area and practicing her photography.

Beaver enjoys working with the great team at Bonner General Immediate Care because it gives him the opportunity to meet a lot of people and help them during times of sickness and injury.

DEALING WITH STRESS AND PAIN Embracing the benefits BY RYAN EGAN, LICENSED JOINT AND MOVEMENT SPECIALIST AND OWNER OF MVMNT GYM, SANDPOINT THIS IS PART TWO OF A TWOPART SERIES

L

ast month we discussed the toll that stress can take on one’s body. This month, we will focus on just how to deal with the stress in our lives and use it to our benefit.

The most powerful way to overcome stress is breathing. Everyone should spend at least 10 minutes each day silent, still and completely immersed in breathing as deeply and controlled as possible. This can change brain waves, lower blood pressure, increase parasympathetic drive and even change blood chemistry by reducing acidity. Interestingly enough, there are ways to measure stress chemically, but there is no hard-nosed understanding about what pain truly is and exactly how the mechanisms that occur create such powerful signals in the body. Research into pain science reveals a host of attributes that contribute to the most common and misunderstood response in the body. These attributes have mechanical, chemical and somatic underpinnings, but no substantial hard evidence points to a specific pathway but rather a host of occurrences contributing to the synergistic signal we call pain. But like stress, not all pain is bad. In fact, there are a host of things humans experience that are extremely painful, yet are normal, important and in some cases beautiful. Like childbirth, cutting teeth as a toddler and even surgery that can heal. The mental discomfort and pain of learning to speak a new language or solving complex problems. The emotional pain of a relationship gone awry or failing at something you have put your all into. Like stress, pain has lifegiving and life-shaping advantages. However, there is a point. The point I believe is where stress, and

its psychosomatic-biochemical reactions in the body that overwhelm our systems, turn to create damaging and sometimes deadly outcomes. The pain of childbirth brings a beautiful life into the world; having teeth allows you to enjoy a good steak or bite into a fall fresh apple; and surgery has saved countless lives. The heartbreak of lost relationships can teach about oneself but also free you from toxic people. Failing forges faith and develops perseverance, which ultimately shapes our character. The mental exhaustion of learning new skills teaches patience and humility. Even hunger pains drive the laborer on, while the universal resistance to your life’s purpose strengthens the will. All these painful experiences reveal a human’s true path to success. There is no greater failure than succeeding at all the wrong things. I cannot imagine a greater pain than succeeding at things that don’t matter, but much worse, stressing myself along the path to get there. I also believe that learning to develop stronger shoes on the path of discomfort and stress offers opportunities to strengthen oneself to deal with heavier loads and respond with increasing amounts of love to become stronger so others can be strengthened. Jesus experienced the ultimate suffering for us, so I try to remind myself that the pain and stressful trials I have experienced are precious gifts to strengthen me to serve others. If you or a loved one is losing the battle to stress, please reach out to me directly. Life is too precious and beautiful to not live in victory. It would be my honor to serve you.

winter T

he winter months offer us many exciting outdoor activities such as alpine and cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobiling and ice fishing. One thing we don’t get a lot of, though, is lots of bright sunny days. And this ultimately affects how much vitamin D our body produces.

sunshine

There are three types of invisible light rays given off by the sun. These are called ultraviolet A, B and C. Ultraviolet C, or UVC, would be the most damaging to us, but because it has the shortest wavelength, it cannot easily penetrate the protective ozone layer. It is not really an issue, unless you are an astronaut or live in the Antarctic.

HOW IT AFFECTS VITAMIN D LEVELS BY SCOTT PORTER, CENTER FOR FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION

Ultraviolet A and B, however, do reach us. To avoid damage, our skin will actually darken in order to reduce how much light gets into our skin. That’s how we get tan. This is mostly due to the UV-A light. Overexposure can lead to skin cancers. This happens when the DNA in our skin cells mutate and no longer function normally. Skin cancer strikes more than one million people each year. We get a lot more A light than B, over 40 times more, and this reaches deeper into our body. The intensity of UV-A stays about the same throughout the year, but it is the B light that causes us to burn and turn red. Because this light doesn’t reach as deep into the body, it has a greater effect on the more superficial layers of skin. UV-B intensity varies by season. Sunshine, while potentially damaging, can also help us maintain or improve our health. When light, particularly the B form, hits our skin, it triggers a process where the body begins to manufacture vitamin D. This is called “photolysis.” A special compound with a very technical name, 7-dehydrocholesterol, absorbs these light rays and synthesizes pre-vitamin D from cholesterol. Later this is turned into D and then activated in the liver and kidneys when needed. It’s pretty amazing to think our body is capable of making a vitamin from light. Yes, cholesterol is an important substance in our body. And so is vitamin D. While technically more a hormone than a vitamin, D is important for absorption of calcium and magnesium in our intestines. It is also a critical component of our mood, immune system, cardiovascular health and insulin regulation. Vitamin D is like a switch that turns on a number of genetic activities. Many researchers have identified a worldwide deficiency in vitamin D, especially those individuals who live far from the equator and don’t get much sun. This sounds to me like North Idaho in the winter. You can measure vitamin D levels when you do a blood test. Not everyone interprets these values the same though. While some doctors consider values of 30 ng/mL adequate, others will argue values higher than 50 are necessary to experience the multitude of beneficial health effects. I even see research that suggests values closer to 80 as ideal. I consider vitamin D essential and foundational. Since it is limited in food, we either have to get it from the sun or take a supplement. Don’t forget to include vitamin K!

My MS Coping with multiple sclerosis has reflected the rest of my life BY DAN AZNOFF

M

y first impulse was to slug the doctor. Not because he had just diagnosed me with the chronic disease known as multiple sclerosis. It was his bedside manner and an apparent lack of compassion.

My neurologist was probably being practical when he suggested that my wife and I stop on our way home to buy a cane and insisted that we purchase as much life insurance as possible “while I still could.” This could not be happening to me. Not now. I had just started to live my dream. Susan and I had two beautiful children. We had just completed the construction of the home of our dreams nestled in the woods. I can remember carrying my infant son down the stairs and holding the rail to steady myself from what I assumed was pure exhaustion. I needed two hands to grasp the container as I poured milk into his bottle. But it was the trip back up the stairs (pun intended) that worried me most. I remember literally crawling up the stairs to keep my infant son and his bottle above the carpet. After Joshua was fed and safely tucked back into bed, I found my way back under the covers. It was not cold, but my body shivered as if I were standing outside naked in a snowstorm. After I reluctantly admitted that something was wrong, Susan (as she has done a million times since) jumped into action. In a time before the Internet, she spent Sunday researching doctors and gathered information to cope with my unknown ailment. By the time we got home from the doctor on that Monday morning, she had a dietary regiment that eliminated processed foods, reduced carbs and practically eliminated all sugar. Susan also ended my “pity party” by urging me take an active role in protecting my health for the sake of our family. Multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system by blocking messages from the brain to every part of your body. It can cause vision problems, muscle weakness, issues with coordination, numbness and lapses with memory. However, I seemed to be an exception to the rule. The vast majority of

SandpointLivingLocal.com

individuals diagnosed with MS are women. Most of these women spend their youth in areas in higher longitudes, like the Pacific Northwest, the upper Midwest or Scandinavian countries. My wife and I both grew up in Southern California. We did not move to Washington until I was 25. Our son was born when I was 30. Doctors diagnosed me with the relapsing/remitting form of MS, which meant my body would suffer exacerbations and (theoretically) get back about 80 percent of the senses and capabilities that had been lost, presumably over two or three weeks. When my symptoms subsided after my first episode, I was left with zero balance and had lost my ability to type. The senses that disappeared came back very slowly. My writing for the past 30-plus years has been done with two-finger, hunt-and-peck. The running joke has been that I have the ability to type at 24 words per minute, per finger. The one thing that was clear from the start is that MS impacts each person differently. For me, my left side was left completely numb, and my slurred speech made many people presume I had imbibed in too much alcohol. Reality struck over the next few years after I was convinced to sell my beloved bicycle and abandon my routine of playing tennis three to four times per week. I had made my way through college playing competitive tennis, so it was a major blow when I finally agreed to sell my rackets at a garage sale. (I did keep my first racket. There is only so much one person can be asked to sacrifice.)

At first, I tried to hide my physical limitations from employers and colleagues. But I have since learned to accept my situation as the new normal. Friends accept the fact that I may not be able to join them on aggressive treks, but I can still enjoy a relaxed stroll. We love to play games in our house, so I have been relieved of my turn to shuffle a deck of cards or pick up small tokens from a smooth surface. Over the first several years, my exacerbations hit me every four years like clockwork. Usually during times of high stress, like when I started a new job, when relatives flew in to celebrate my son’s Bar Mitzvah and when my wife surprised me by flying in my buddies from college to celebrate my 40th birthday. Gratefully, multiple sclerosis has been on the cutting edge of medical research. I was selected by lottery to receive the first medication available. However, my insurance company was hesitant to cover the cost of the first medication that promised to reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations. It took my doctor to get on the phone with the insurance company to explain they could choose between covering the cost of the injections or be forced to pay for repeated expensive trips to the emergency room. I am still not sure how my lovely wife maintained her demeanor a few years later when a representative from the insurance company made the decision to no longer cover the $6,500 monthly cost of my medication because I had not had an episode. Calmly and logically, she explained to the paper-pusher that the medication could be responsible for the lack of relapses. My coverage was renewed Over the years, my doctors have prescribed three separate injectable medications for me. I’ve been on Copaxone since 1999 after a major exacerbation left me unable to walk. Despite the temporary disability, I refused to buy a

Gratefully, multiple sclerosis has been on the cutting edge of medical research. I was selected by lottery to receive the first medication available. cane. But I did use an old baseball bat to help me get around the house. Truth is, I am luckier than most. Unlike most MS sufferers, I am still able to drive. I am not able to work 40 hours every week, but I am still able to maintain a major portion of my professional duties and my domestic responsibilities. That is probably because I work at my computer at home and not in a factory or on a construction site. When driving, I always carry a small card in my wallet next to my driver’s license that explains to law enforcement officers that my erratic driving may have been caused by a chronic brain disorder. Thank goodness I have never been forced to pull out my “Get out of jail free” card because I cannot walk a straight line even on my best days. Thanks mostly to my wife’s ability to cover the major portion of our income and secure health care through her employer, finances have never been a major concern. Susan made certain our health care was covered last year when she created her own consulting firm. We are not looking forward to dealing with the bureaucracy when it comes time to transition to Medicare.

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, there are 2.3 million people worldwide who suffer with MS. Research has been unable to determine any cause for the disease, and there are no cures. Medical advancements in the last few years have helped patients cope with symptoms, but there has been little progress toward reversing the loss of myelin around the nerves that transmit messages from the brain. Many people have symptoms that are not identified as MS for many years. In fact, until the widespread acceptance of MRI imaging, the method for diagnosing the condition was the elimination of other conditions through a series of brutal tests. For myself, I can think back to a time in college when I was even clumsier than normal, dropping my books, stumbling and forgetting important dates. Doctors hospitalized me at the age of 19 for a spinal tap to determine the cause of my awkward lack of balance. The diagnosis at that point was a pinched nerve. But those warning signs were quickly forgotten in a few weeks when I appeared to find my equilibrium. Many people are quick to dismiss some of the early warning signs, like the feeling of pins and

needles in your feet similar to when your legs are crossed too long or being tired all the time. Naps are a good thing, and I’ve learned to listen to my body and enjoy losing my eyes in the afternoon. But that is not by choice. Issues with speech and swallowing are also common symptoms that people do not suspect as being a symptom for something more serious. For me, damaged portions of my brain have caused slurred speech. Ironically, my degree is in broadcast journalism. I would have been on disability 20 years ago if my career had taken me into radio or television. A speech therapist taught me to slow my speech to help me enunciate. She also taught me to speak louder to help me articulate. But that did not work because people thought I was just yelling all the time. Pain is a common complaint of people with MS. One lady I knew through a support group actually thought of having her legs amputated to eliminate the constant pain. Thankfully she did not follow through with her plans. I was never much of drinker, but one cocktail is now more than enough for me to pass the

car keys. I have also given up attempting to calculate the proper amount needed for a tip. Many of my fellow patients have utilized prescriptions from their doctor to return to the altered state of mind they enjoyed during the ‘60s. Now that cannabis is legal, the thrill is gone but high times remain the norm. My wife has always accused me of not being able to multitask, but I honestly cannot say if that is a result of MS or just not being very detail oriented. Lists have become an important part of my daily life, from a Honey-do list for chores around the house to simple trips to the grocery store. There was a time that I would stand up on tables to voice my opposition to social injustice. Now I cannot trust myself to stand on the table or climb a ladder. My loss of memory is something else that can be blamed on either age or MS. Or both. There have been numerous times when my daughter will blame my MS for my lack of control over my emotions. I’ve tried to explain to her that I am just a mean old man. Anybody who knew me before I was diagnosed has not been surprised when I have tried to make light of the bleak prospects for my future. For example, I take great pride in the fact that I do not get seasick anymore. When I am aboard a boat filled with people turning green at the gills, I simply welcome them to the world that

In one way I am thankful to MS. My wife and I made the decision to travel while I am still able to get around without a wheelchair. That has been a blessing. I live in every day. After my initial diagnosis, I realized that I could reach into a boiling pot of water to drain pasta without any pain. However, I forgot to realize that my skin would still turn red and form blisters. When the director of the Washington chapter of the national Multiple Sclerosis Society approached me and a friend about establishing monthly meetings for a self-help group, I was reluctant to participate until we agreed to name our little group the No Whiners. We now meet once a month at local hospital to hear speakers who help us enhance the quality of our lives. In one way I am thankful to MS. My wife and I made the decision to travel while I am still able to get around without a wheelchair. That has been a blessing.

When my doctor explained that a majority of my sensory losses would occur in the first five years after my diagnosis, I went out that day and purchased a sports car with a five-speed transmission. That was an expensive mistake. When it came time to buy a new house when the kids were in high school, Susan and I limited our search to homes with a master bedroom on the main floor. Since then we have moved to a home filled with stairs and grandkids. Modern medicine has limited the progression of my disease and healthy habits have given increased my chance to lead a long (and somewhat normal) life. More importantly, I have been surrounded by an incredible support system, beginning with the self-help group organized by the National MS Society, understanding friends, compassionate children and a loving wife who never fails to amaze me. And I never did buy that cane. Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer based in Mukilteo, Washington. HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING MADE Tips and tricks for the season BY TROY LOUIS CHANDLER

s I hit the snooze button for the umpteenth time, something came over me. A slight chill that was not emitted from the “white noise” fan that I keep on at night to quiet life’s random choir of neighborhood noises. I peered out of my bedroom window and noticed that it was slightly open and that all of the trees outside are naked. It is winter. I shut the window, grabbed my cozy robe, put on a pot of coffee, sat back and let the warmth of holiday cheer take over. This is my favorite time of year as a chef and as a house dad. This is the time for holiday entertaining. Holiday entertaining can be a chaotic and stressful time, but it does not have to be. I have come up with seven holiday tips to guide you through your holiday entertaining.

A

• Keep It Simple, Go Nuts Most modern grocery stores have amazing bulk food sections. Visit these bulk food aisles to gather various roasted nuts. Mix your holiday bounty and place into a decorative bowl accompanied with a few nut crackers. Stand back and watched your friends and family gather ‘round, cracking and enjoying roasted nuts and talking about this holiday season. This has become a wonderful tradition at my house that is easy and inexpensive. • Mulled Wine I like to keep this holiday libation on the kitchen counter in a crockpot on a low setting just enough to fill the house with holiday “spirit.” As guests come over, they are greeted with a little holiday goodness! Here is an easy recipe that will kick off all of your holiday soirées.

This is the time for holiday entertaining. Holiday entertaining can be a chaotic and stressful time, but it does not have to be.

Ingredients: 4 cups apple cider 1 bottle of red wine 1/4 cup honey 2 Mexican cinnamon sticks The juice and zest of one orange 4 cloves 3 star anise Method: Place all into a stainless steel or non-reactive pot and bring to just before a boil. Turn down to warm and watch the magic begin.

• Holiday-Themed Movies There is no shortage of great holiday movies out there. I gathered my favorites and put them on an external hard drive so that I can have them play on a loop. You can stream them to your TV from a laptop. My top picks are A Christmas Story, Home Alone, Elf, Christmas Vacation and … It’s a Wonderful Life. • White Elephant Gift Exchange Most of us have experienced this phenomenon at work. But trying it at home is more fun than a bag full of ferrets. Invite your friends and family to join you in your freshly holiday-decorated abode for a new comedy-packed tradition. A fun touch is to add in a ridiculous gift that can be passed on year after year. You can also give awards for best

gift, worst gift, funniest gift, etc. A good friend of mine wanted to win the worst gift category so he gave a card that read, “Your gift is a classic car.” The recipient was awarded with an old junker that they had to figure out what to do with. Funny? • Be Cheesy A great way to impress holiday guests is with a cheese platter. This is an easy way to “wow” your friends with little effort. Grab four to five types of cheese. Cut some into cubes, slice some and crumble some. Arrange them on a tray and place strands of grapes for garnish. On a separate tray, arrange various crackers to pair with. Don’t be afraid to throw that weird holiday red almond cheese ball in the mix as a centerpiece. • Potluck Why slave away in the kitchen this year? Let your guests know of the masterpiece that you are going to create and then allow them to create everything that will go with it. So that you don’t end up with 12 types of artichoke dip, make a list of items that you would like your guests to bring. You can create a group email and check items off as your guests accept each challenge. As an added bonus to your genius, you will have a week’s worth of awesome leftovers! • Be Entertained All right, all right, you have been the host of many holiday get-togethers. It just might be time for you to be holiday entertained. It’s time that you finally accept that offer to go to the neighbor’s or a coworker’s house or … a family member’s house for the holidays. Make your favorite dish, show up and just have a nice time. As a chef, I am going to take this advice, let someone else drive the bus and have a great holiday season. I will see you at your house!

GIVE THE GIFT OF MEMORIES Unique gift ideas that last a lifetime and don’t break the budget By Patty Hutchens

T

he Christmas season is a joyful time full of family, fun and joy. But the reality is, that for many, it also brings with it a great deal of stress. “How will I afford to buy all these gifts for the people on my list?” It makes one dread what is supposed to the season of hope. So why not try something new this year? Instead of watching your credit card balance increase over the holiday season, why not think of creative ways to provide a gift to someone on your list that does not cost much—or possibly nothing at all. Purchase just a small gift that also provides an opportunity to spend valuable time with one another. Shared experiences are something that will last a lifetime, unlike toys that will soon be forgotten, or even broken. As adults, how often do we find ourselves “spring cleaning” no matter what time of year. We get tired of the clutter and seek to rid ourselves of

the abundance of things we have in the hope that it will help not only our physical environment but also our emotional well-being. “Cleaning house” externally can help calm us internally. So, the gift of spending time with someone or providing an experience to them makes sense when it comes to gift giving to the adults in our lives. But it is not just adults who benefit from time spent together; shared experiences are important for children, too, as it helps contribute to their psychological development. Those children who spend time sharing experiences with others have been found to have a stronger sense of identity, higher rates of academic success and a greater sense of security. Grandparents and grandchildren who spend time together also can learn a great deal from one another’s generation.

Here are a few suggestions for those who may be on your list this year.

Homemade gift certificates can be a wonderful way to tailor a gift for that special person in your life, whether it is a child or an adult. Make a gift certificate to take that person to their favorite restaurant for some special one-on-one time. This way, the recipient can choose the place and you get the opportunity to share time with that special person. Spending time as a family is something that is increasingly difficult in this day and age. Both parents often work outside the home and kids’ schedules are packed with extra-curricular activities and homework. So, consider giving gifts to your children that can help facilitate a family game night. Buy one game for each child this Christmas and increase your game collection. Then, set aside one night each week to gather as a family and spend time interacting with one another and trying out the new games! Do your children enjoy working with their hands and creating new things? A “craft bucket” full of supplies is a wonderful gift for them (and you!) to explore their creative side. Fill a bucket with scissors, paper, glue, painting kits and more to inspire them. If you are particularly crafty, take the time to teach your child your special skills. For seniors on a fixed income, it may be especially difficult to make ends meet over the holidays. After all, often times they have the largest list of all with children and grandchildren to buy for. Instead of purchasing gifts, why not offer your children the gift of babysitting your grandchildren so your child can enjoy some time with their spouse. And you get to spend that cherished time with your grandchildren as well! Dads. They are frequently much more difficult to buy for, especially when it comes to gifts of experience. Does your dad or husband enjoy a particular hobby? Home beer brewing has become increasingly popular over the last several years, and more and more men (and women) are creating their own concoctions at home. It’s something people can do together, and both can learn a new hobby as well. Visit a local home brew store to investigate what supplies and ingredients are necessary.

advance) and let him know he’ll be enjoying the outdoors again soon enough. Even better, his Christmas gift will carry over into the new year, and he’ll cherish the opportunity to spend time with his family creating memories. Moms are typically much easier to shop for when it comes to giving the gift of an experience. Pampering gifts are especially popular, whether it is a massage, pedicure or simply time alone to soak in a hot bath while Dad takes the kids out for a movie or sweet treat. For a man seeking to give the gift of an experience to his wife, simply planning a date night and making all the arrangements, including the babysitter, will go a long way. Women often are the ones who schedule and plan all the family’s activities, so this will truly be one you want to repeat for special occasions! Whatever you choose to purchase or create for those on your “nice” list this year, it is important to remember the true meaning of Christmas and to carry the spirit of Christmas in your heart all year long!

the Holiday Season Sandpoint Style BY PATTY HUTCHENS For a town our size, it’s amazing how much there is to do year round, and the holidays are no exception. If you are looking for some unique opportunities to get out and enjoy our wonderful community this Christmas, following are some suggestions:

Parade of Trees This year there is something new and exciting coming to Downtown Sandpoint for the Christmas season. The downtown businesses have teamed up with the Chamber of Commerce to present The Parade of Trees, which will feature approximately 30 different stores displaying themed Christmas trees for all to enjoy. According to downtown business owner Shery Meekings, the Chamber will judge and provide prizes for the top three winners. There will also be a chance for the community to vote; the voting box will be located at the Cedar Street Bridge. “It’s a great event for all ages, and we are hoping to make this an annual event,” said Shery.

Quiet Season on Orcas Island

The perfect antidote to all the holiday commotion STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

Y

ou know you have stumbled upon a hidden gem when the guests, finding out you are a travel writer, ask you not to write about the location because they don’t want anyone else to discover this special experience. So shhh, don’t tell anyone about the Smuggler’s Villa Resort on Orcas Island; it will be our secret. You will want to visit sooner rather than later as rumors abound on the island about Oprah’s recent extensive real estate purchases on the island. Mike Stolmeier has managed the property for almost 30 years and is also an owner. The resort has individually owned townhouses that are offered as vacation rentals. “We get a lot of regulars. I am now seeing kids who I watched take their first steps now bringing their own kids here. This is a place of firsts—first step, first time swimming or making s’mores. That’s what makes my day here,” he said. “We say we like kids and tolerate adults.” The resort is very family friendly. Quiet season is a special time in the San Juan Islands, and Orcas Island is a perfect location to unwind before or during the holiday season. “Guest coming here love there are no malls. Families will visit to do holiday baking and spend time enjoying each other’s company,” said Stolmeier. “One of the popular things we do each night is our fire pit. Typically there are three shifts which begin at sunset. The first is parents with younger children, followed by families with older kids, and then you will get adults sitting around the fire until one or two in the morning.”

YOU KNOW YOU HAVE STUMBLED UPON A HIDDEN GEM WHEN THE GUESTS, FINDING OUT YOU ARE A TRAVEL WRITER, ASK YOU NOT TO WRITE ABOUT THE LOCATION BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT ANYONE ELSE TO DISCOVER THIS SPECIAL EXPERIENCE.

Located on the North Shore of the island, the pebble beach affords breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands, Mount Baker and lovely sunsets. The outdoor swimming pool is unheated but open year round. Many guests try a European spa experience by jumping in the icy water and then getting into the hot tub or sauna. Kids will love the menagerie of animals from parrots and guinea pigs to aquariums. Cuddles, a super friendly bird, greets everyone with a hello when they pass by her cage. The resort also has a marina and kayaking, and fishing charters or whale watching tours are available adjacent to the villas. As the quiet season slips on to Orcas Island, the summer crowds fade away and some businesses close. Make sure to visit the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce website (see The Specifics). Each week they post a “Blast” which gives you a schedule for all the activities taking place on the island, and they also have a listing of what is open. A must see during your visit is the little town of Eastsound with its quaint shops and restaurants. You can walk from Smuggler’s but it is about a mile or so. This time of year it is easy to find parking in town. Stop at Brown Bear Baking for good coffee, fresh pastries and hot-out-of-the-hearth bread— all baked daily. The baking kitchen is open so you can watch the masters at work. With a very friendly staff, you will find yourself a regular during your stay on the island.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Plan to spend a day on the other side of the island. Moran State Park with its pristine lakes and lush forests is the jewel of Orcas Island. It is much larger than you would expect and is actually the 4th largest state park in Washington. Drive up to the top of Mount Constitution, which rises nearly a half mile above Orcas Island, or plan to park and hike up. There are a couple of options for shorter or longer hikes. At the top of the mountain is a watch tower, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. From the top of the tower is the best view of the San Juan Islands. Locals call it one of the top water views in the world. Although that is not verifiable, it is pretty incredible. On a clear day you can see Mount Baker and Mount Rainier and all the way into Canada. After spending time in the park you are sure to have worked up an appetite. The Rosario Resort is not far away and is a beautiful location to enjoy a late lunch at the Mansion Restaurant. (Note this time of year lunch is only Friday through Sunday.) The restaurant is in the historic Moran Mansion in what was once the veranda overlooking Cascade Bay. The hotel also has a free museum with information about the historic mansion and the Moran family. A former mayor of Seattle and a shipbuilder, Robert Moran donated much of the land, which became Moran State Park, to the State of Washington.

Quiet season is a special time in the San Juan Island If you are lucky enough to visit on a Saturday, you can experience the unique performance by musician Christopher Peacock. He regales the audience with tales of the mansion’s history interspersed with musical interludes on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano and the 1914 Aeolian organ with 1972 pipes and a slide show of historic photos. The grand finale is the original silent film version of “The Phantom of the Opera” featuring Lon Chaney in the title role. The silent movie is accompanied by Peacock on the organ. It is mesmerizing. The presentation is free and takes place at 4pm on Saturdays. The San Juan Islands Scenic Byway has a portion on Orcas Island. This is a great way to explore and points out all the highlights of the island. The self-guided drive begins at the Orcas Island ferry landing in the cute little Orcas Village. There is an eclectic market with upscale groceries, a few shops and Boathouse Ciderworks. It will take two to three hours to drive around the island. The byway will take you through small hamlets and

scenic bays. The views really open up this time of year after the fall foliage is gone. Deer Harbor has a nice public sandy beach which is worth a visit. For more information on the byway, check out the Visit San Juan Islands website (See The Specifics). Orcas Island really shines in the quiet season where one can relax and unwind without the crowds of the summer. Winter weather is very mild with average temperatures of 46 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit and a lot less rain than the mainland—in December you are likely to see a sunny day during your visit! After touring the island, enjoy some downtime at the Smuggler’s Villa Resort. Disconnect from technology and reconnect with your family or friends. Stroll the quiet beach or take a private charter with Outer Island Excursions located on site. You can schedule a fishing charter or go see some of the lighthouses from the water. Bundle up, throw some steaks on the grill and enjoy the views from your deck.

Christmastime at the Ranch ENJOY SLEIGH RIDES, DINNER AND MUSIC AT WESTERN PLEASURE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTSEY OF WESTERN PLEASURE GUEST RANCH

O

nce the gifts are opened and the rush of preparing for Christmas has subsided, it’s nice to relax and treat yourself to some of the best that North Idaho has to offer. And there is no better place to do that than at Western Pleasure Ranch in Sandpoint. During the week between Christmas and New Year’s, enjoy a sleigh ride, dinner and music. With sleigh rides departing at both 5 and 6pm, dinner is served at 6:30 followed by musical performances by some of your favorites. Kicking off the festivities on December 23 will be Tami, Dave and Paul Gunter of Bridges Home. This Sandpoint-based trio utilizes many instruments and sings beautiful harmonies while performing Americana, Celtic and folk music for all to enjoy. December 26 and 27, Devon Wade will return to Western Pleasure Ranch to perform once again. Devon is known for his country music, much of which is original. He has recently opened for acts such as John Michael Montgomery, Sawyer Brown and Kip Moore. For Devon, his goal is to ensure that everyone has a great time each time he takes the stage. “I want people to hear the memories, whether it’s from one of my songs or a cover of another artist,” said Devon.

On December 28, join Monarch Mountain Band, a high-energy bluegrass, newgrass, folk-rock band and enjoy what is sure to be a memorable night. While the performer for December 29 has yet to be announced, be sure to join Darin Hilderbrand of Just Plain Darin on December 30 for a night of eclectic original music. Previously the front man for the rock band Kidd Robin, Darin has emerged as a popular musician throughout the Pacific Northwest. Finally, ring in the New Year with Justin James Sherfey, a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who plays fiddle, guitar and mandolin. All dinners are $65 for adults and $54 for children 6 to 12 with children age 5 and younger free. The exception is New Year’s Eve when they will serve a ranch-raised beef prime rib and chef’s choice chicken including dessert, coffee, tea and hot chocolate for $75 for adults and $64 for children 6 to 12 and 5 and younger free. There will also be a no-host bar available to purchase beer and wine. Don’t miss out! Reservations are required and can be made by calling 208.263.9066.
