IT’S THE MONTH OF LOVE. Valentine’s Day is a time set aside to express our love for those close to us. But let’s take it one step further this year. Let’s not only express love to our spouse or significant other, let’s use it as a starting point to express appreciation and kindness to others all year long. It is said that it can take up to 10 positive comments to offset one negative comment. Whether it is a child picking on another child, a parent speaking in condescending words to their son or daughter, or co-workers criticizing one another, negativity can have a serious and possible lifelong impact on a person. This Valentine’s Day you can choose to make it a point to give positive reinforcement to family, friends and co-workers and even extend that sentiment to others in the community. Maybe write a thank you note to the community’s first responders and drop it off at the local police and fire stations. Send a note to your child’s teacher thanking them for the care they give your son or daughter. A simple gesture can make a big difference in the lives of others. The season of Lent begins just two weeks after Valentine’s Day. Perhaps you can carry on this “season of love and gratitude” into the Lenten season; who knows, it may quickly become a habit that makes not only others feel good, but yourself as well.

Practical Living

ESSENTIALS By Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center

DESIGN YOUR DREAM USE ONLINE RESOURCES AND SHOP LOCALLY

FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE a hard time putting together their home interiors, I can see why they shop online. I can understand that it’s easiest to see furniture arrangements and know what works together. I had a client recently tell me that she purchased all of her furniture online. Sure enough, when I walked into her house, I could have picked out the catalog page number that matched her living room down to the candle holders on the sofa table. She was missing a couple of key components to finish out her house— her locally purchased mattress was on the floor, so at least she had a place to sleep, but the headboard was lost in transit somewhere and a replacement one would arrive in four to six weeks. Ordering furnishings and interior items is difficult—after all you are paying additional for the shipping and waiting the transit time for their “white glove delivery.” And if you don’t like it, good luck sending it back to the vendor.

SUPPORT AND SERVICE

I’m not knocking magazine or online shopping. I think it is great to look in magazines, look online, tag things on Houzz or Pinterest. They are all great resources to get ideas of what is out there. Use these resources to help you be a smarter shopper. A smart shopper who gets the best customer service, support from a company that stands behind their warranties, and best of all, the items you buy are guaranteed to make it to you in one piece and on time. Use your resources and shop locally. Based on what you like, tear those pictures out of your magazines, pin them to your board on Pinterest, take your own pictures, or jot down

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

Don’t be afraid to pull out your iPad, phone, or oldschool folder with magazine tear-outs to give us an idea of what you like. notes on what looks good to you. Start a file of those items. That way, you have an idea of what you want and can use that to convey to whomever you are purchasing from. Shopping local has its advantages when it comes to furniture and interior finishes. I have people come in all the time with a simple photo of a vanity or more complex folder of photos illustrating their dream kitchen. They may like the layout of a particular island in one picture, but also want the style of the base kitchen cabinets in another magazine photo. We will use those different styles together to create their own unique kitchen. The same rings true for furniture, tile layouts, rugs and most all interior finishes. Don’t be afraid to pull out your iPad, phone, or old-school folder with magazine tear-outs to give us an idea of what you like. Also shoot a few photos of the room where you want to put the furniture, the cabinets you are replacing or the windows for which you need blinds. Take a few dimensions of the kitchen or bathroom you need cabinets in, the windows you want blinds for, and the area you’ll be buying furniture for. The more informative you can be, the more it helps us provide accurate renderings, information and pricing. You really do get the better end of the deal by shopping local because you will have the customer service and local support you deserve. (Oh, and you are supporting your local economy!)

IF YOU’RE JUST STARTING OUT in your career, you will need to be prepared to face some financial challenges along the way—but here’s one that’s not unpleasant: choosing what to do with some extra disposable income. When this happens, what should you do with the money? Your decisions could make a real difference in your ability to achieve your important financial goals. Under what circumstances might you receive some “found” money? You could get a yearend bonus from your employer, or a sizable tax refund, or even an inheritance. However the money comes to you, don’t let it “slip through your fingers.” Instead, consider these two moves: investing the money or using it to pay off debts. Which of these choices should you pick? There’s no one “right” answer, as everyone’s situation is different. But here are a few general considerations: • Distinguish between “good” and “bad” debt. Not all types of debt are created equal. Your mortgage, for example, is probably a “good” form of debt. You’re using the loan for a valid purpose—i.e., living in your house —and you likely get a hefty tax deduction for the interest you pay. On the other hand, nondeductible consumer debt that carries a high interest rate might be considered “bad” debt—and this is the debt you might want to reduce or eliminate when you receive some extra money. By doing so, you can free up money to save and invest for retirement or other goals. • Compare making extra mortgage payments vs. investing. Many of us get some psychological benefits by making extra house payments. Yet, when you do

SandpointLivingLocal.com

24

have some extra money, putting it toward your house may not be the best move. For one thing, as mentioned above, your mortgage can be considered a “good” type of debt, so you may not need to rush to pay it off. And from an investment standpoint, your home is somewhat “illiquid”—it’s not always easy to get money out of it. If you put your extra money into traditional investments, such as stocks and bonds, you may increase your growth potential, and you may gain an income stream through interest payments and dividends. • Consider tax advantages of investing. Apart from your mortgage, your other debts likely won’t provide you with any tax benefits. But you can get tax advantages by putting money into certain types of investment vehicles, such as a traditional or Roth IRA. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your contributions may be deductible, depending on your income, and your money grows on a taxdeferred basis. (Keep in mind that taxes will be due upon withdrawals, and any withdrawals you make before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10 percent IRS penalty.) Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but your earnings are distributed tax-free, provided you don’t take withdrawals until you reach 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Clearly, you’ve got some things to ponder when choosing whether to use “extra” money to pay off debts or invest. Of course, it’s not always an “either-or” situation; you may be able to tackle some debts and still invest for the future. In any case, use this money wisely—you weren’t necessarily counting on it, but you can make it count for you.

THRIVING IN 2017 SIMPLE STEPS TO SUCCESS

! y m A r o e i Call Jod

BY DEBORAH OLIVE

JANUARY, THE MONTH WE COLLECTIVELY hit the reset button and develop our goals for the New Year, has come and gone. Are you one of the people who expects to thrive in 2017? If so, what changes are you making? Are you enthusiastic about your progress? Are you disappointed? Are you somewhere in between?

If you answered, “enthusiastic,” keep up the good work, but don’t stop there. If you stalled, find yourself procrastinating or feel stuck, there’s something you can do to get back on track so you thrive in 2017. Whether you’re enthusiastic about January or find yourself in some version of stalled, your next step is the same. In the world of professional athletes, players review game films to study their performance. They study their opponents as well, but the high-performance athlete is keenly interested in their own performance. A picture paints a thousand words, and the film makes no distinction as it reveals both the mistakes and how the player excels. In the world of business, leaders who excel regularly review their “game films” and make adjustments. What if you paused to review your January in the same way? You’ll uncover feedback to consistently improve in the areas that matter most to you. Imagine what all of those small “wins” will feel like. The winning formula for your review is the 3 Cs: courage, compassion and curiosity. With courage, you tell yourself the truth about what really happened. Compassion means you’re gentle in the areas you need to correct. Curiosity opens your mind to new approaches. When you practice the 3 Cs and use quality questions, your discoveries will astonish you. As you do your review, ask the following:

• What worked well? • What do I need to do more of?

Happy Valentine’s Day from Pend Oreille Insurance!

• What do I need to do less of? • What do I need to stop? • What do I need to start? Let’s see how this works. Jason is a family man and business owner who comes into the office before his employees. He wants to improve his health and fitness this year, so he joined a gym. He decided to get up an hour earlier three days a week for 6am workouts. Four weeks later, he’s been to the gym seven times instead of the 13 he planned. Jason is discouraged and plans to drop his gym membership if February isn’t significantly better.

Jason used these five questions to review January. “What worked well?” He wasn’t happy about the six workouts he missed, but the question focused his attention on the seven workouts he completed and the benefits he already noticed. What do I need to do more of? “Get up early”—which he dreaded. “What do I need to do less of?” “Dread getting up early.” He laughed. His curiosity kicked in. Getting out the door by 5:40am was the biggest block to his workouts, but his schedule during the rest of the week was locked in. Or was it? He considered an afternoon workout, which required leaving the office early. He had concerns, but his staff had come a long way. He’d talk with them. “What to stop?” Making things so hard. Jason was optimistic about the changes he planned. Better yet, he discovered the power of the review. In less than 30 minutes, he’d gone from being discouraged to having a high level of confidence that he’d make adjustments until he dialed in his workouts. Jason just took a giant step toward thriving in 2017.

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

CONSIDER THEIR COMFORT

PROTECT YOUR ANIMALS AGAINST THE DANGERS OF WINTER BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL

PROTECTION

THIS YEAR’S WINTER IN NORTH IDAHO has taken its toll on more than just the heating bill. In our clinic, we have seen a tremendous amount of advanced arthritis; the cold often pushing limping geriatrics out of their comfort zone. Most dogs and cats need lots of help acclimatizing when the temperature dips down below 30 degrees. A friendly veterinary reminder, some advice and a little review of hypothermia are listed below.

• Clear snow and ice to help encourage small dogs to eliminate outside. Small breeds can be trained to urinate and defecate on paper or diaper-like pads indoors when weather is too extreme. Avoid outdoor trips completely when the temperature or wind chill reaches 0 degrees F. • Even indoors, your pet may feel the cold. Make sure that your dog’s favorite bed is in a location free from drafts.

• If your dog is allowed to play outside, monitor him closely. Bring him in if he starts to shiver or whine!

• Pet clothing can help to provide some additional insulation. Check out the latest in canine outdoor wear; from jackets to paw boots, there is both comfort and fashion in the pet world!

• Help arthritic or geriatric pets, especially when they are faced with stairs or ice. Slips and falls can take a compensating animal down a few notches.

• As most of us in North Idaho might already know, outdoor-only animals need complete shelter from the wind and cold. A heated barn or mud room should be considered when the temperature drops below 40 degrees, especially for an old companion.

• Limit the length of your pet’s walk in cold temperatures. When it drops below freezing, your pet should spend no more than 10 to 15 minutes outdoors.

As most of us in North Idaho might already know, outdooronly animals need complete shelter from the wind and cold.

• Animals suffer from hypothermia when their body temperature goes below 100.5 degrees F. Low temperatures, lethargy and anorexia all indicate a need for urgent veterinary attention. If not addressed immediately, it can contribute to shock and organ failure and eventually death. In a hypothermia crisis, move the pet to a warm environment, bundle in warm blankets that have been warmed in the clothes dryer, and add hot water bottles in the blankets. Seek veterinary attention. Stay warm!

“We love music and art. The messier the art, the more fun we have,” said Kimberlie. “We also have a piano in the center of the building. It’s used for lessons, dance time, circle time and much more.” At Highland Academy, the children are taught sign language on a daily basis, just one of the things that makes the school so unique. WHEN YOU ENTER the welcoming doors of Highland Academy preschool and daycare in Ponderay, the sound of music and laughter fills the air and the joy of both children and staff is evident. As an academic daycare and preschool that specializes in hands-on education, art and music, Highland Academy enriches the lives of children as young as six weeks through five years of age. Owners Kimberlie and Austin Clark purchased the daycare, where Kimberlie had worked as a manager, in April of 2015. “I have been a part of this daycare since 2012,” said Kimberlie. “I worked as manager, so when the opportunity came for my husband and I to buy the business, we had such a smooth transition. Parents were familiar with me, and it wasn’t shocking and scary to be under new ownership.” With a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Kimberlie teaches lessons to the pre-school children, and she and her staff ensure that the children are constantly surrounded with activities that help them develop educationally, physically and socially.

Kimberlie said they offer an after-school program as well as a summer program for children up to age 9. In addition, they provide school bus drop-offs and pick-ups from various schools in the area. “We are open Monday through Friday from 5:30am to 6pm with occasional Saturdays and Friday night date nights by reservation.” Safety is something Highland Academy takes very seriously. “Our facility is considered a locked facility. That means all of our outer doors remain locked at all times. Only parents and guardians of children in attendance have a personal code to get inside the facility. This is for the safety of the children,” said Kimberlie, adding that all teachers are pediatric CPR certified and go through background checks. “I’m extremely picky about who I hire.” At Highland Academy, it is a priority to make sure the children receive the physical activity that kids crave. They recently installed a new playground with a nine-inch deep covering of certified playground wood chips, which goes a long way in the prevention of accidents. And with the reality of living in the climate of North Idaho, they have also an indoor playground as well as an indoor climbing wall.

Kimberlie is passionate about her work with children and is grateful to many for the support she has received in furthering her mission at Highland Academy. “God has given me the strength and knowledge to run this business,” said Kimberlie. “My husband, Austin, has been my rock. He is employed elsewhere in law enforcement, but he is always available to help and support me.” She is also grateful to the previous owners for creating such a wonderful place for children to thrive. And, of course, there are the teachers with whom she works. “I have an amazing staff! Most of them have been with me since I became owner,” said Kimberlie. “They always strive to make Highland Academy a loving place.” Kimberlie invites those interested to call and arrange for a tour.

Inspiring the Next Generation Sandpoint High School counselor honored at nation’s capital By Kendall Stratton

ENCOURAGEMENT. KINDNESS. DEDICATION. These three words do not even begin to scratch the surface of the amazing woman Sandpoint has the honor of calling its post-secondary transition counselor, but it’s a start. Sandpoint High School is made up of wonderful teachers and inspiring individuals. Students, parents, and the community in general, are incredibly lucky to have them all in the lives of our youth. One individual in particular was recently nationally recognized as Idaho Counselor of the Year. Jeralyn Mire, a true character of the Sandpoint area, received the honor of being Idaho’s Counselor of the Year, and what an honor it was to be had—and a well-deserved award to be given. To obtain this recognition is a process. Jeralyn was nominated two years ago. The selection process through Idaho School Counselor Association consists of filling out an application and submitting documentation of the things the counselor has done for the school. Three counselors are chosen: one high school, one middle school and one elementary school. Out of those three, only one is chosen to represent the state at the national level. As Jeralyn and her family made their way across the country to the White House, she used the trip more as a learning experience more than anything else. Kristi Mire, her daughter and a 2012 Sandpoint High School graduate, had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. as well. “My mom was her normal outgoing self, making friends left and right. However, she was not just there for the recognition. She was looking to learn from every counselor she met, gaining ideas for the counseling program here in Sandpoint,” said Kristi. After talking with many counselors and learning about their own individual school programs, Jeralyn realized that Sandpoint has a pretty amazing program. For being a small town school, the resources and events the counseling center provides are quite substantial and somewhat ahead of the game. From Declaration Day and the college fairs to taking the time to enter each classroom and help students reach their true potential, the counseling center is hands on. Jeralyn’s expectations of her visit to the White House were blown away with what events she actually had the honor of experiencing. She thought the evening would include shaking the hands of the Department of

Education members and sitting in the audience for Michelle Obama’s farewell address. Never did Jeralyn think she would find herself directly behind Michelle, let alone give the First Lady a hug. Her first thought, having the sense of humor that she does, was “do not faint or do anything dumb!” as she was completely moved by Michelle’s words about the youth of the nation. When asked about Michelle and her direct contact, Jeralyn could not stray away from the fact of how genuine and inspiring she was and how incredibly thankful she was for the encouragement these counselors give to their students. There was one thing that Michelle said that was Jeralyn’s most inspirational moment. She was in awe of the way that Michelle addressed the young people of America. Jeralyn shared, “Michelle made it clear that you can do anything you want to do. It’s your story, you can do it, but it’s going to take work.” Everyone is going to have their ups and downs. Everyone is going to have their struggles, but you have to be willing to put in the work. “I really appreciated that,” Jeralyn said. “It was honest and inspiring, but there is work to be put in to get to where you want to be.” Jeralyn has helped countless students at the high school reach their goals. Every year, students are constantly going in and out of her office, asking questions, bringing drafts of personal statements, and simply seeking

support and encouragement for their plans after graduation. No matter what each student’s goal after school was, Jeralyn served as a helping hand for the beginning steps of their journeys. Ryan Schwartz, a 2012 SHS graduate who is in his second semester of graduate school at Boise State, had words of gratitude and praise for Jeralyn. She helped Schwartz tremendously with scholarships, applications and the mindset of taking that next step. The pressure of the process is sometimes quite overwhelming. Schwartz said, “All it took were some chats with Jeralyn to turn the unease into excitement about my future. She makes the daunting feel attainable.” Another student who just received her acceptance letter from Warren Wilson College in South Carolina had words of thanks for Jeralyn as well. After going through the Early Decision application process, Jacqueline Owens, soon-to-be-graduate of 2017, said that Jeralyn was always there to check in with her on her application make sure her Common Application was at its highest caliber. One thing that Owens said the biggest take away from her experience with Jeralyn was how to prioritize and the necessity and importance of meeting deadlines. Also, Jeralyn could not reiterate enough, not only to Owens but to all students, “the importance of putting all of your effort into that application.” Whether the application was for college, a job or the military, each student

SandpointLivingLocal.com

needed to put as much of themselves into their writing. Jeralyn believes in every student, and she is very in tune with recognizing that all students have that potential. No matter what each path the student wants to take, Jeralyn helps each individual realize their strengths and abilities to get to be where they want to be. Although Jeralyn was the one chosen to represent the state and travel to the White House to be nationally recognized, she made it clear that it was not just an award for herself. The support and work that the entire school district puts into the kids of our community is who deserves the award. “Watching students grow and change is beautiful to watch”, Jeralyn exclaimed. “That is why I love my job. Being able to let students know that whatever you want your life to be, you can obtain that.” That is the mindset that many, if not all of the teachers and counselors throughout the district strive for in the workplace. That is the reason why Jeralyn could not stop reiterating, “This award really needs to be shared by the Sandpoint community. It has taken a lot of people to get where we are and have the programs we do. It is important for people to know that it is a team award.” This award, although Jeralyn had the honor of representing the team, is true representation of what Sandpoint has done and will continue to do for the youth of our community.

TEACHERS WITH A BIG HEART

BRENDA WOODWARD BY PATTY HUTCHENS

MAKING LEARNING FUN ENJOY THE PROCESS of learning. That is one life lesson teacher Brenda Woodward hopes her students will take away from her class. “It isn’t always easy, but even when things don’t go well, there is still something to be learned from the process—and don’t ever stop learning!” said Woodward. Over the past two decades, Woodward has taught high school and college students and also volunteered at the elementary level as well. Now a teacher at Lake Pend Oreille High School, Woodward instructs grades 9 through 12 in various science courses including introductory chemistry and physics, an energy class, and a water science class. “The emphasis of all classes is handson inquiry through the application of the scientific method,” said Woodward. Sharing that her teaching experiences at Lake Pend Oreille High School have been the best of her career, Woodward says what she enjoys most is seeing the students succeed. “All students want to do well, but don’t always believe that it is possible. If a young person has the chance to experience real success, they will find joy in the experience and continue to seek additional opportunities to feel a sense of accomplishment,” said Woodward. “That is what makes for happy, contributing citizens.” One of the highpoints of her career took place last year when she had the opportunity to take a group of students to the Youth Water Summit at the University of Idaho. “Seeing the professional, proud and accomplished group of students show judges and peers just what they could do was a highlight of my teaching experience,” said Woodward.

Lake Pend Oreille High School Principal Geoffrey Penrose is grateful to have Woodward on his staff. “Brenda, the sole science teacher at LPOHS, excels in every way—especially in creating and facilitating rigorous and ‘cool’ learning experiences for her students. Her classroom buzzes with meaningful activities and engaged kids,” said Penrose. “For the last two years, her students have represented LPOHS well in University of Idaho’s Youth Water Summit, and we’re looking forward to it again this year! Brenda is a kind and empowering advocate for students. We’re proud to call her an integral member of the LPOHS community!” As for Woodward, she is appreciative to all of those with whom she shares her days at Lake Pend Oreille High School. “I am grateful for the inspiration that my students and co-workers provide,” said Woodward.

Health car e Bonner General Health Foundation enhances lives By Patty Hutchens

WHEN DEBBIE HEISER visited Sandpoint several years ago from her home in Kansas City, she had an unexpected medical emergency. She was taken to Bonner General Health, which at the time operated under the name Bonner General Hospital, and experienced not only compassionate and caring staff, but also superior medical care she never expected for a town this size. Now, several years later, Heiser has made Sandpoint her home and sits on the Bonner General Health Foundation Board of Directors, a position she enthusiastically embraced due to her prior experience with the nonprofit hospital. “I was amazed at the resources and the caliber of the people for a town of this size. There is a reason people live in Sandpoint,” said Heiser of the beauty of the area that draws people to the community. “It brings a higher caliber of professionals here.” She is not alone in her passion or motivation to be involved. Bonner General Health Foundation Board President Joe Williams was driven to be a part of the Foundation from what he calls the best three days of his life. “My three children were born at Bonner General. The three best days of our lives took place at the hospital, and that is what made

nonprofit hospital they were challenged to keep up with technology and advances in healthcare. But that all changed with the revived Foundation and the extraordinary effort by many in the community to help raise funds. According to Robin Hanson, marketing specialist for Bonner General Health and Foundation, since its first event in February of 2008, the Heart Ball, the Foundation’s’ signature fundraiser, has raised approximately $500,000. In addition to the Heart Ball, funds are generated through an appeal letter campaign to various residents twice each year. “We also receive general donations as well as funds through memorial dedications when someone passes away,” said Hanson. The Heart Ball, which is held each February and is always a sell out, is the Foundation’s primary fundraiser. This year will be the ninth annual Heart Ball. It started as a black tie formal event and today is black tie optional. A beautiful sit down dinner is preceded by a social hour of champagne and a chance to mingle with other attendees. Following the meal there is a live auction with everything

Foundation over the last nine years have had a significant impact on the lives of local residents. The Foundation has purchased a portable ultrasound machine, surgical warming cabinets, cardiac equipment, items for the pediatric and rehabilitation departments, and have been working to elevate the patient care environment. “We purchased pieces of equipment for departments over the years with the funds raised from the Heart Ball, currently we are focusing on elevating the environment of patient care; upgrading items that touch more of our patients,” said Hanson. While many are still traveling out of town for some of their healthcare needs, they may not be aware that many of those services are now available at Bonner General Health—something the board hopes people will inquire about before driving out of town. “Some people think bigger is better,” said Rickard of the misconception many have when it comes to healthcare. “It is important for us to provide an inviting atmosphere because we provide really great care here.”

“My three children were born at Bonner General. The three best days of our lives took place at the hospital, and that is what made me want to be involved.” me want to be involved,” shared Williams. Today, Williams and Heiser, along with dozens of others, donate their time to the Bonner General Health Foundation, a nonprofit organization that is not only enhancing the lives of patients in our community, but saving lives as well. The Foundation was originally formed in 1979 with a purpose to educate the community and provide additional medical equipment to Bonner General. “It went dormant for awhile and was re-established in November of 2007,” said Bonner General Health’s CEO Sheryl Rickard, who explains that the board of directors for Bonner General Health felt that there needed to be an increased awareness of the healthcare resources available to Sandpoint and the surrounding community. Also, as a

from an opportunity to bid on a stay at a condo in Maui to original artwork by Sandpoint’s own Georgia Simmons. They also have packages such as a weekend trip to Walla Walla for wine tasting and the “Stellar Cellar” which includes several bottles of wine from Pend d’Oreille Winery. One of the favorite parts of the event is the dessert auction. “Numerous restaurants and individuals in town donate wonderful desserts that are incredibly tasty and beautiful for us to auction off. Trinity at City Beach does their own 20-lb. cake called the ‘TCB’ cake,” said Heiser. The TCB stands for toffee, coffee and bacon. And to work off the delectable desserts, the evening concludes with dancing.

The Board and Beyond The Foundation Board consists of a diverse group of individuals including people from the tourism industry, medical community, financial industry, real estate, members of local businesses and retirees. They meet monthly to discuss the needs of Bonner General Health and the best way to meet those needs. In addition to the board, there is also an advisory council which consists of approximately 60 people from the Sandpoint community; that too is comprised of an eclectic group of individuals.

Enhancing Lives

“It’s a diverse group, including different age groups,” said Heiser. “Because different age groups have different healthcare needs.”

role similar to that of an ambassador. They listen to the needs of the community as those needs relate to healthcare and help spread awareness of all that is available at Bonner General Health. “Awareness is a huge piece,” said Rickard of educating the community on the services that are available locally. “(The advisory council) helps us prioritize our community’s needs.” The advisory board meets with the board three times each year and receives an update on what is going on at Bonner General Health. It is also a time when the members of the advisory board can provide feedback from the community. One thing that may not be evident to many is the extent of the impact Bonner General Health and its employees have on the community. For instance, Bonner General Health works closely with Schweitzer Mountain Resort and, since the winter of 2012, has staffed the resort’s first aid station full time with a Registered Nurse at no charge to the resort. That is just one way they partner with others. And as far as the Foundation goes, Rickard said that while it has been a blessing to have the additional funds, it is partnering with the community that has also made a difference. “Getting the community involved has been one of the best parts of the Foundation,” she said. How Can You Help? There are many ways you can contribute to the Bonner General Health Foundation. One way is through planned giving. If you are working with a financial consultant and want to donate to the Foundation, meet with them to discuss the best way to do that given your budget and circumstances. Do you have a special passion for pediatrics, cardiac care or another area of healthcare? You can donate and earmark your donation for a specific department or need at the hospital. Any donation made to Bonner General Health Foundation is tax deductible so it is a win-win situation. To donate, mail your donation to: Bonner General Health Foundation, 520 North 3rd Avenue, Sandpoint, ID 83864.

AS THE SENIOR CAPTAIN of the Sandpoint wrestling team, Preston Bunty has worked hard and it has definitely paid off. “I am a state qualifier and a junior Idaho team member,” said Preston who also maintains a 3.0 GPA. His post high school plan is to attend Boise State University where he will pursue a degree in business administration. Preston shares that one of the biggest challenges he has had in his years of wrestling was starting out as what he said “one of the worst kids on the team.” But through hard work and dedication, he has improved and is now captain.

“The thing I enjoy about wrestling the most is that during a match, you are the only one out there. There is nobody to rely on to be successful except for yourself,” shared Preston. When asked what one life lesson he has learned from sports, his answer is simple. “Chase your goals and never, ever give up.”

DANIKA TOMAZICH: A JUNIOR AT SANDPOINT High School, this is Danika’s third season on the Bulldog’s varsity girls’ team where she plays the position of guard. It is a sport she thoroughly enjoys. “The best part about basketball for me is gaining a strong connection with my teammates,” she said of the bond she shares with her fellow players. With a 3.7 GPA, Danika works hard on and off the court. She is currently enrolled in the health occupations program which will allow her the opportunity to earn her CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) by the end of the school year. “I have always wanted to pursue a job in the medical field, such as a physical therapist or traveling nurse, because I love helping people,” shared Danika.

Deliveries Available

While undecided as to what school she would like to attend, she said she will limit her athletics to intramural sports at the collegiate level. One of the biggest challenges she has faced in basketball was when she was diagnosed with mononucleosis. “I was unable to play for a few months, which affected my ability to gain more experience,” said Danika. “I overcame that by attending as many practices as I could to absorb information without participating. While sports can teach one many things, Danika said it has taught her what it takes to succeed—hard work and determination. “Success doesn’t come to you if you sit around and wait for it,” she said.

Sandpoint Lacrosse Club Thrives ...And it’s not just for boys! By Patty Hutchens FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES, the opportunity to participate in sports seems like it is growing exponentially. Soccer, football, baseball, gymnastics, dance, martial arts, swimming, volleyball, wrestling and more provide abundant choices from which to choose. But one sport that seems to be growing in popularity more than ever is lacrosse. Stephanie Aitken is the board president for the Sandpoint Lacrosse Club and said her kids were attracted to the sport due to the pace of the game and the love of the lacrosse community. “It is a sport that works well with other sports such as soccer, football and track,” said Aitken. “Kids are able to use the skills they have learned in those sports and transfer them over to lacrosse.” Board member Brent Leedle said that lacrosse also gives the kids an opportunity to play an exciting sport that involves a lot of running and scoring. “Until the high school level, all the kids have the opportunity to score. The positions are rotated. Usually, every child on the team gets at least one goal a season,” explained Leedle. “There is also some contact involved, which most kids really enjoy. It’s not the violent collisions of football as there are strict rules of when and how contact is made, but it’s also not the complete non-contact as in soccer.” While the girls’ teams do not have contact other than stick to stick, Leedle said the sport is perfect for adolescent boys. Lacrosse is a sport that has been around for well over a century, but is relatively new to Sandpoint. According to coach and board

member Ken Hutchings, Syracuse University has had a team for over 100 years. “(For some) Native Americans, it is a tradition that when a child is born they are given a lacrosse stick, and when they die they are buried with it,” said Hutchings of the traditions and history associated with the sport. Aitken said since her son started playing five years ago, she has seen the local club continue to grow. “It is one of the fastest growing sports in the Northwest,” said Aitken. “Last year we hosted our first ever two-day jamboree in Sandpoint, and we had over 25 teams come and join the tournament. We had teams come from Canada, Montana, Spokane and Coeur d’Alene.” In Sandpoint, the youngest team is comprised of third and fourth grade students, and there are teams all the way through high school. “There is also now a high school girls’ team and a team of younger girls,” said Leedle of the latest expansion. Because lacrosse is not a sanctioned sport by the Idaho High School Activities Association, it cannot be supported by the high school itself. It is, however, considered a club at Sandpoint High School and Leedle said that Activities Director Kris Knowles is very supportive of the club. That being said, with lacrosse being the fastest growing sport in the country, those involved hope it is just a matter of time before things change. “Washington is close to making it a sanctioned sport at the high school level, and it’s just a matter of time before Idaho follows suit,” said Leedle who adds that in Boise it has become extremely popular even at the college level where Boise State University has a team. Just because it is not a high school sanctioned sport in Sandpoint, the opportunity to play at the college level does exist. Sandpoint High School graduate Carson Paull is a junior at Capital University and is a member of their lacrosse team. He started playing lacrosse when he was 13. “I was playing baseball before lacrosse and saw the middle school lacrosse team practicing and thought it looked like a lot of fun,” said Paull, adding that it was the pace of the sport and the fact that it was so different from other sports that enticed him to try it. Paull said the club guided him by helping him to figure out what lacrosse camps to attend, but other than that he was on his own to contact schools in the hope of being recruited. His efforts were successful, and he has thoroughly enjoyed playing at the collegiate level. He encourages young people to go out and try the sport. From his experience, it has not only given him some great memories, but has taught him important life lessons as well. “Lacrosse has taught me how to deal with adversity and helped me figure out how to not only be a part of a team, but also how to help lead and set a good example in all aspects in life,” shared Paull.

teaches you to get up and keep going, even after you’ve been knocked down,” he said. “I am all about being a team and working together as a whole to achieve greatness...” “It has also taught me countless lessons on discipline and being there for your teammates no matter what.” Hutchings agrees. “Lacrosse builds teamwork and good sportsmanship. Lacrosse teaches you to get up and keep going, even after you’ve been knocked down,” he said. “I am all about being a team and working together as a whole to achieve greatness, while also creating opportunities for individuals who excel to potentially receive scholarships.” The cost to play lacrosse in Sandpoint ranges from $100 to $150 depending upon the age and gender of the team. The boys’ high school cost is $225 and includes a jersey and shorts. Younger players also receive a jersey with their registration fee. Equipment is available to rent for a fee of $50 and a $100 deposit is required. But cost should not be a deterrent for any player.

“We also have scholarships available, and it is our intention that any kid who wants to play will be allowed to do so. We never turn anybody away and will find a way to get him or her on the field. I really mean this. We will always find a way for anybody who wants to play to do so,” said Leedle.

am really excited for this year,” said Hutchings.

Hutchings, who served as the assistant coach for the seventh and eighth grade team last year, will be the head coach of the high school team this year. He is excited by the fact that there are already 25 kids signed up.

And if you find you like the sport and want to continue beyond the high school years, Hutchings is committed to helping out with that.

Hutchings played both football and lacrosse in college, but lacrosse is by far his favorite and he is looking forward to seeing it grow in Sandpoint. “It is simply the most fun sport out there; it is fast and competitive. The games are wicked exciting to watch. As the players in Sandpoint continue to improve, it will just become more and more fun to watch. The kids are learning so many fun plays and cool shots! I

TRUST. RELATIONSHIPS. DEPENDABILITY. These are all principles upon which Jamie Emmer has based his business since it first opened in May of 1990. As owner of Lumber Marketing Services, Emmer is a wood specialty wholesale and retail international distributor. He works closely with builders, contractors and retail lumberyards offering mill-direct lumber sales, wholesale lumber sales, smaller specialty custom orders and custom millwork and framing packages.

something that has always been at the forefront of all he does. “As an environmental physics major in college in the 70s, before environment was a household word, I have been able to bring a better sense of stewardship and sustainability into an industry that at times has lost touch with how we are all connected by the responsible use and development of renewable resources locally and around the world,” shared Emmer. “Our largest customer two years ago was located in Beirut, Lebanon.”

Emmer moved here in 1982 and was attracted by the beauty, the opportunity for outdoor recreation and the friendliness of the people. He and his wife have been blessed to raise their four daughters in North Idaho and are grateful for the opportunity to also work in such a beautiful place. “God has provided me with this opportunity, and the gifts to pursue it,” he said of his business success.

Since 1910, Emmer’s family has worked in the wholesale lumber industry, and he has personal experience in lumber remanufacturing, mill sales, office lumber brokering, ownership of a tree farm, ownership of a retail yard and wholesale distribution. This wide range of experience is one reason he has been able to provide exceptional service, product and pricing throughout the years.

Emmer shares that one of the things he enjoys most about his work at Lumber Marketing Services are the relationships he builds with his customers. “(Those relationships) bring great satisfaction and meaning to my daily responsibilities as a business owner,” he said gratefully. “Helping people achieve their dream home is a privilege and an honor I don’t take lightly.”

With a generous heart and an appreciation of his community, Emmer has given much of his time and talent back to the place he calls home. For almost 15 years he has been involved in Cedar Hills Church as a trustee, elder and care pastor. He also began a volunteer project 14 years ago at a school for at-risk teenage girls near Heron, Montana. Emmer has also served on the board at the Hope Christian Counseling Center for 15 years and has served on the Schweitzer Chapel board and the Filling Station board in Clark Fork. And his generosity does not stop there. A percentage of the profits from Lumber Marketing Services also go towards relief organizations both locally and internationally.

At Lumber Marketing Services, Emmer provides a full line of specialty lumber products including siding, decking, paneling, flooring and timbers in a variety of natural species that include Cedar, Pine and Douglas fir. Lumber Marketing Services also provides imported hardwoods such as Brazilian hardwoods, exotic hardwoods and softwoods.

Live Long and Squat By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor

WE ALL KNOW THAT SITTING is terrible for our bodies for reasons too numerous to list in this article. It damages our metabolic, nervous, mental, muscular and structural systems. Unfortunately, no matter how vigilant we are, there are times when sitting is inevitable. We sit while we drive, while we eat and relax, and for most people, we sit while we work. As a society, we need a paradigm shift that pretty much eliminates sitting in order to truly live the lives for which our bodies were designed. But I don’t see that happening any time soon, if ever, so what I am going to focus on is minimizing the damage that sitting causes.

First thing we need to do is obvious. Sit less. As much as it seems like a no-brainer, it takes constant effort to sit less. You can get a pedometer, movement tracker or app to set movement goals to help motivate you to keep your rear out of a chair. Don’t slouch when you do sit. Sitting in front of the computer or TV and slouching just compounds all of the damage done from sitting. And here’s a biggie—squat. While sitting is an unnatural position for your back, putting compressive forces on the lumbar spine, squatting is the opposite. When done properly, it extends our lumbar (lower) spine without compression while stabilizing with the legs, core, hips and glutes.

Many people believe that squatting is bad for their knees. Not so. Squatting poorly is bad for your knees.

Don’t start off squatting with as much weight as possible. And for the love of all that’s holy, don’t do it on a smith machine. Use your body and eventually free weights. Free weights meaning barbells, dumbbells or kettlebells. Make sure you can articulate the movement by keeping your knees towards the second and third toe, keeping your chest up and your spine in a neutral position. If you haven’t squatted in years, then seek a qualified professional or do some research on how to progress your squat from wherever you may be starting. Strength is a skill and must be honed in order to keep and develop it. Many people believe that squatting is bad for their knees. Not so. Squatting poorly is bad for your knees. If it hurts when you squat, stop. You are most likely doing it wrong. If you don’t have anyone to help you learn to develop your squat, take a video of yourself squatting and watch the video after each set. If it hurts your eyes to watch it, the movement you are doing is most likely not a correct squat. Start by putting a chair or bench directly behind you and sitting down and then stand back up. Sit down without rocking back onto the seat and stand straight up without rocking forward. Be mindful of your spine not rounding at any part of the movement. I bet that doesn’t hurt your knees.

between the ages of 51 to 80 were studied for an average of 6.3 years, and those who needed to use assistance from both hands and knees to get up and down were about seven times more likely to die within six years than those who could quickly stand up and get down without support. So what does that mean for you? Can you get up and down off the floor quickly and without assistance from your arms or rolling onto your knees? If so, good, but make sure you are able to do it long term and continue to move and move often. If not, you have some work to do. Start moving ASAP. Our bodies were designed to stay active. You only have your one body for the rest of your life and in some ways, you can dictate how long it will be. Susan Moore owns Better Gym in Gig Harbor. She is a Master Trainer for TRX, a professional education provider for StrongFirst and several other fitness organizations. Susan also teaches fitness education to all branches of the U.S. military.

UNDERSTANDING VERTIGO TREATMENT DEPENDS UPON THE CAUSE BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY ACCORDING TO A medical website, the definition of vertigo is “the feeling that your environment is moving or spinning.” This is slightly different than the feeling of dizziness, which is the sensation that you are moving or spinning. Vertigo can have many different causes including brain disturbances caused by trauma or illness, but the most common origin is inflammation or other disturbances to the inner ear. To understand vertigo, it is first important to understand the mechanism of the inner ear and how it affects balance. The ear is a very complex and important organ which houses the ossicles and ear drum within the middle ear for hearing, and complicated set of structures including the cochlea, semicircular canals and vestibular nerve within the inner ear which aid in balance and the ability to realize one’s position in space. The mode in which the components of the inner ear affect balance is very complicated, but basically relates to fluid, called perilymph, housed within the semicircular canals. The semicircular canals are oriented in all three planes of motion, or a 3-dimensional arrangement, and the perilymph can therefore flow freely through the canals in relation to any position the body might be in. The position of the fluid in the canals sends a signal to the brain to let the brain know if a person is upside down, upright, sideways or even just subtly veered in one direction or another.

ASSESS

H E A LT H Y T I P

So how is vertigo generally treated? The treatment is related to the cause of the problem. With blood pressure and disease complication, medication is often the best solution. Acupuncture, diet and other natural remedies have also been found to be effective for some. In the case of ear rock, trained doctors and physical therapists can perform what is called the Epley maneuver, which is a sequence of head positioning that can release the ear rocks from the canals where they can be reabsorbed in the body. This treatment can be very effective in a short amount of time for some patients. Vertigo can range from an annoyance to a very scary condition and can be a complication of many illnesses and conditions. Luckily, there are many treatments available to help get the symptoms under control.

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

Christina Rust, D.P.T. Jenny Jones, P.T. Ryanne Lemon, P.T.A. Susan Colman, Office Manager

Inflammation within these canals can disrupt this mechanism that causes the signal to the brain to be faulty. Another disruption may be caused by what are known as “ear rocks,” or small crystals of calcium carbonate which are found in another section of the inner ear and may get knocked into the canals from trauma or aging. These rocks disrupt the flow of the perilymph, and may cause a person the sensation of the room spinning whenever they change positions.

TAKING FITNESS OUTSIDE COMBINE EXPLORATION AND EXERCISE BY NATALIE DREGER

O ITTI P H EJAULS TT HD Y

I AM A HUGE FAN of being outside and burning calories at the same time. We live in such a gorgeous community, we can all take our fitness routines outside of the typical gym environment and still experience the same great benefits—if not greater results. Some people have referred to our community as God’s country, simply because we have everything that we could ever need or want right here. We have amazing freshwater lakes, rivers, mountains and fields just out our back door. Don’t you just love that? I do. I often consult with clients who have never had, and have no desire to ever have, a typical gym membership. I will tell you the same thing I tell them; you don’t require a gym membership to improve your health or to experience an amazing physique transformation. It really wasn’t that long ago that we didn’t even have a gym to go to. People got plenty of exercise throughout the day outside doing things they enjoy doing with their friends, their children, their spouse or their dog.

There are so many different amazing places to see and experience in the area; I want to give you an idea of what you could take advantage of. Dover Bay is an incredible property situated on the beautiful Pend Oreille River and only three miles from downtown Sandpoint. Dover Bay has over nine miles of walking and biking trails that the entire family can enjoy. Think about the calories you could burn simply taking your kids for a leisurely bike ride after dinner? There is an incredible and safe paved bike trail from Sandpoint directly to Dover Bay, a beautiful ride in the summer or fall. If you are a bird watcher, you’ll want to meander over the wooden foot bridge and take in the sights of many different species. The peace and serenity that you will find kayaking along the river’s edge, or simply sitting on the beach, is unparalleled to anything else. The peace and quiet in an already hectic world will be a welcome escape to your busy

schedule. We all know how damaging stress can be on our body, why not pencil yourself in your own schedule for a little “time-out?” Go to Dover Bay and just take a little walk and breathe in the fresh air? Leave your cell phone in your car and enjoy the best stress reliever you can find. Nature. We often get in this toxic rut of work, work, work and we forget the importance of getting outside and moving our body. If we are too busy going to work and coming directly home to sit in front of the television, we lose the healthy benefits of a great work-life balance. Give yourself permission to step outside of your comfort zone a bit and do something different. Trust me, you will love it and just might find yourself going back for more. I did. Feature Story THE REALITY OF HOMELESSNESS HELPING THE MOST VULNERABLE BY MEGAN OLSON I COULD FEEL THE SEETHING INTENSITY of my tears as they streamed from my face. I stood in the vacant doorway and watched my husband of ten years drive away from our home for the last time. There are no words to give color to the grief. A flood of emotion overcame me as my trembling fingers clutched the papers. His vocalized intention to keep the house and business struck me as the fatal blow between boxers in the knockout round. I staggered to keep my composure as the baby lay sleeping in her room. My work had been reduced to half so that I could be home with her. Even with a college degree, I was only bringing home a meager one thousand dollars a month. Where would we go? How would I care for her? A thousand dollars a month is not enough to survive and raise a child in today’s economy. Now, I stood at the threshold of homelessness rather than the doorway of the home that I had helped to build with my own two hands. On any given night, there are over 500,000 homeless people in the United States; of those, almost half are families. I first met Paula and James as I parked my car and stepped out onto the curb. The number of people living on the streets of Spokane is almost incomprehensible. I’ve travelled much of the country, and I can’t unravel the mystery of how a small city cultivates such a monumental crisis.

Some sidewalks are so full of people camping that there is no room to walk. The incessant requests for money and the colossal camps of people living under bridges have grown to be overwhelming. I caught a quick glimpse of the woman sitting on the curb near my car. I made a rapid and methodical attempt to avoid eye contact so that I didn’t have to engage in conversation. If I seemed busy, maybe she wouldn’t bother me. As I was fumbling for change to feed the meter, I heard her voice behind me. I didn’t want to turn to around to face her, but my lovely 7-year-old girl looked at me with those wide blue eyes that questioned how her mother would respond. Sometimes I give money, but I always feel uneasy of the propensity of fueling addictions. Sadly, the dissolution of my marriage was a combination of my ex-husband’s addictions and my willingness to enable him. I took a quick glance at the woman as I apprehensively handed her a few measly dollars. She looked

intently back at me with tears in her eyes and said, “God bless you.” Now, I was just standing there staring at her, unable to move. Seeing her on the curb brought me back to that moment of being in my doorway. I recognized that I was not too removed from her situation. Five years ago, this could have been me. It only takes one catastrophic life event to catapult us from comfort into chaos. No person is immune. Within a few moments, the woman’s friends joined us; one of whom was confined to a wheelchair and the other was visibly limping. On that 90-degree day, the intensity of the heat had written itself upon their faces. I didn’t perceive them to be a threat because their humanness and vulnerability was evident. I wanted to know their story. I wanted to know how any person could arrive here. The following Sunday, I was without my daughter. James and Paula had agreed to meet me for an interview over breakfast. I couldn’t

help but smile as Paula arrived in bright red Mickey Mouse footed pajamas. Her smile portrayed the persona of an innocent child too pleased to care about the world’s view of her appearance. She joyfully announced that someone had given her the shoes off of their feet the night before. Her heart was genuinely bursting over the gesture. Sadly, it would be less than two minutes before the diner would ask us to leave. My heart sank, as the reasoning was painfully obvious. My company politely responded to the restaurant’s request as though this had been a rehearsed response. I held my tongue to avoid being snide, but I was indignant on the inside. I imagined that this was only a taste of life on the streets—where people react to you as though you are “not quite human.” I tried to set aside the feelings of degradation and redirected my focus to the level of humility that I just witnessed from two homeless people that were asked to leave based upon their appearance. After we settle in for our breakfast at a quaint

outdoor café, James reluctantly mentions that he and Paula haven’t eaten in two days. I offer them whatever they want from the menu but ultimately, it’s the coffee that piques their interest. No matter where we are in life, humans really aren’t that different. I too was equally delighted by the prospect of good coffee. As I begin talking with them, I realized that they are like any other relationship out there; they bicker, they laugh and they finishing each other’s sentences. It warmed my heart as they spoke of knowing each other for 25 years. They asserted that fate had recently reunited them on a city bus. Despite the harshness of their circumstance, it was obvious that love still had made its way through the darkness. When asked about life on the streets, no words could readily be given. There was obvious pain attached to the response. They offered the confessions of being on and off the streets since their teenage years. In 25 years, they have seen it all. I watched as Paula began nervously rubbing her fingers together as she spoke of her life’s circumstances. She gave the account of having her ribs broken and battery acid dumped on her chest. James asserted that one person must stay awake at all times as the other person sleeps. “You must form a family to survive out here. You will either be harassed, sexually violated, robbed or murdered. There is no safe place on the streets.” With a surprised and naïve tone, I said, “nowhere?” James responded with a pause and a disheartened tone barely above a whisper “nowhere.”

It was difficult to not be moved when they gave the account of a passerby that removed her own shoes to give to Paula because she didn’t have any. The selfless stranger walked away completely barefoot.

In the interview, both James and Paula indicated a great loss as young children. Each of them grew up feeling like “throw-aways” of society. Paula confessed that sometimes she sits and stares at the park as she watches children play. She says, “I hope that I don’t scare anyone, it’s just that I never got to be a kid.” She and James were both placed into foster care before the age of 5. When I asked what they dreamed of being when they were kids, I was certain that all little children must dream of growing up to become something. Paula tells me that she never had that dream. She never had a chance to think about it. She was placed in multiple foster homes and faced violent physical and sexual abuse. Both were living on the streets full time before the age of 17. How could you not lose heart living in these conditions and seeing the worst of what humanity has to offer? Paula asserts with optimistic assurance that there are others that have it far worse. In my head, I couldn’t imagine it being any worse. The real hope was delivered when they expressed that they also get to experience the best of humanity. It was difficult to not be moved when they gave the account of a passerby that removed her own shoes to give to Paula because she didn’t have any. The selfless stranger walked away completely barefoot.

James tells me that it’s ultimately faith that keeps him going and the hope that tomorrow will be better. To my surprise, he offers that he became an ordained pastor 16 years ago. I hadn’t asked about his limp, but he began to recount the details of his horrific car accident that occurred five years prior. The accident had left his body broken and mangled; rods and pins now hold it together. As he spoke, he glorified God for saving his life. Before me was a man not complaining about a broken body or the harshness of life on the streets, but a man with a grateful heart that he was still alive. Each day, they find themselves caught in the web of a vicious cycle. Both express an eagerness to work. James admits that the accident has rendered him unable to work many of the labor positions for which he is qualified. Paula, however, seems positive of the prospect of working. Each day, their objective is to make enough money begging on the streets to be able to stay at a cheap motel. “We do all that we can to not have to sleep on the streets, even if that means going without food.”

Both of them struggle with mental and physical disabilities. At first, they were nervous to offer the confession of battling mental illness, but they assured me that they are medicated. Paula’s greatest struggle seems to be her epilepsy. “It’s the unknowing of when and where it will occur that is the most difficult.” James also has to face diabetes in addition to his other physical ailments. He expressed a sense of guilt about being homeless and having specific dietary needs to avoid insulin shock.

homeless population. I wanted to know what services are available and how accessible they are. The organization did not return my call.

Washington State, despite being recognized as a “social service state,” seems to have little to offer for those most in need in Spokane. Paula and James both respond in unison that “Spokane is one of the worst places in the country to be homeless.” Paula playfully nudges James and says, “Then why the heck did we come back here?” They raise the point that many of the services available require transportation. How do you reach those places when you do not have or cannot afford the ability to get there? As a follow up to their claim, I did make an effort to contact one of the most recognized organizations that works with the Spokane

When asked about what it is that they want out of life, James said it best. “Not every person is looking for a handout but a hand up. We want the same things that everyone else wants—love, comfort…” and with a slight pause and softness in the tonalities of his voice, he said, “every person wants a home.” People are people.

Poverty and homelessness are very complicated matters on so many levels. Whether it’s a mindset or any other possibility, it’s important to not lose sight of our humanity. I want to encourage you to not be afraid. You don’t have to give money. Be the human that gives the shoes and is willing to walk away barefoot.

By Colin Anderson An active lifestyle and healthy outlook on eating and exercise can help us feel and look better. The following pages outline a few key things that we can do moving into the new year to help jump start an active approach to life in 2017. Cheers to health!

Designing Your Workout Routine

SandpointLivingLocal.com

65

know your strength To Avoid Injury You were All Conference track in high school, and 20 years later you’ve decided to pick up right where you left off—bad idea. When starting an exercise plan, it’s extremely important to know your abilities and limitations. As we age, our flexibility naturally weakens and our muscle recovery time takes longer. Be sure to stretch before and after workouts to avoid slipping a disk in your back or spraining and straining knees, ankles and shoulders. Most gyms have on-site trainers that will take you through a series of tests then set up a program tailored to your goals.

How To: Build your stamina If it’s been six months since you ran six miles; don’t hop on the treadmill and plan on doing the full six. When building up endurance and stamina, the initial goal is time, not distance. You might be able to run an eightminute mile, but if you’re maxed out after eight minutes you won’t do yourself as much good in the long-term as if you slowed to a 10-minute pace and ran for 30 minutes. It’s good to vary the machines you use as well. Stairs, treadmill, elliptical and bike will challenge your muscles and endurance better than the same motion each day.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

66

f o u n d atTraining ion Often overlooked by gym goers, getting your core in shape is arguably the most important exercise. Having a strong core gives you the balance and strength to move on to more complex lifts. If the core is weak, your body will compensate on heavy lifts which can lead to injury. Finding 10 to 15 minutes each workout for various forms of sit ups and balancing techniques will lead you to a much stronger foundation and better workouts. It also works the areas where just about all of us are trying to shed a few pounds and inches.

Dedicated Space Inside Your Home

Almost as popular of a New Year’s resolution as getting in shape, decluttering the home is high on many priority lists. By getting rid of excess, you may just open up an entire room in which you can place workout equipment. A small bedroom or office can easily fit yoga mats, resistance bands, free weights, an exercise ball, stationary bike, bench or other larger piece of equipment. You can get a full-body workout with these few items alone. Having a dedicated workout space in your home saves you a trip to the gym as well as gym fees and allows you to work out any time of day.

Legendary athlete Bo Jackson claims he never went to the gym despite his incredible physique. Bo would do pull-ups on tree branches and lift heavy objects around the house. While you don’t have to take it to that extreme, there are all kinds of alternatives to the gym. Ride your bike to work a day or two each week, go cross country skiing or snowshoeing with the kids, shovel the driveway, and in the summer swim a few laps in the lake in between tanning sessions. Parking in the very back of the grocery or department store parking lot forces you to walk further and burn more calories.

C i r cworkouts uit For those looking to ramp up their results, circuit training provides an intense full body workout combining both strength and endurance. Participants go through a series of movements with little to no rest in between. Music is typically blaring, and your instructor will be motivating you to push your body way past your comfort zone. These workouts are intense, but combined with proper diet they help shed pounds and gain lean muscle faster than just about any other program out there. There are various in-home programs available, and gyms typically offer hour-long classes as well. You’ll be hurting, but most see the effort pay big dividends.

Buddy workouts Accountability is one of the biggest challenges to achieving goals. If you only have to report to yourself, it’s easy to skip a workout or cheat on your diet. Get your spouse, teenager or a friend involved with your goal and hold each other accountable. Even if your goals are different, you will be surprised at how much wanting your exercise buddy to succeed will make you want to succeed. This is also great social time outside of work. Buddies can push each other past their original goals, and bringing in additional people or creating a team challenge will also help keep you working towards your goal.

Design With Intention: Make the most of your space

By Annie Nye, Interior Designer at Selkirk Glass and Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center SandpointLivingLocal.com

H

ow many of us would need to clear off our “stuff ” to make room to use the dining table as the actual dining table? At our house, we have homework, books and clutter that end up on on the table, our collect-all space, throughout the week. Wouldn’t it be nice to just have a room that has a dining table, storage for the napkins, tablecloths and your “good” dishes and silverware? Maybe display some of the china you inherited or those decorative vases, pitchers or crystal that you have tucked away in the cabinets. A room like this may seem unnecessary when designing floor plans or if you are house shopping, it may not be on your must-have list, but it should be. Rooms that are intentional in their purpose, such as dining rooms, offices, kids’ playrooms, game rooms or dens, are good ideas when designing or shopping for a house. You don’t have to add square footage to the floor plan of your home to make this work, and by having these intentional spaces, it will actually free up space in other areas of your home. Some of us have these spaces but aren’t using them to their full potential. Rooms that are dedicated to a single purpose are not common in the average home. When we think of these rooms, we typically see them in magazines where they are set up with a perfectly made bed, a spare dresser, fresh flowers, etc. That’s just not real life! Don’t waste that square footage where you invested your hard-earned dollars. Let’s figure out how to make these spaces more useful. Most rooms only need to have a dual purpose once or twice a year. Guest rooms are a prime example. We only have guests a few times a year, so why have a room dedicated solely to their time spent at our house when we can be using that room for our own purposes the other 49 weeks out of the year? Why not convert that room into an office with a Murphy bed so it has a dual purpose? Think of the layout of your home (or your dream home). Aside from the required bedrooms and bathrooms needed, a kitchen and a living area, what other areas would you like to have? I see an office, an exercise room, a mudroom and a family game room in my dream home. An exercise room or dedicated gym space would be square footage well planned for someone that actually uses it. Often times, the treadmill or exercise equipment gets put behind

SandpointLivingLocal.com

73

the sofa or in the garage, but that’s not an appealing place to use it. Treadmills are loud, therefore if someone else wants to watch television, the volume is either so loud so that everyone can hear the movie or the treadmill can only be used when no one else is trying to watch. Or because of space constraints, the exercise machine is put in the garage where it can be loud and take up space that we’re not willing to give up in the house. But in the garage, it’s also less apt to get used because it’s hard to get to; it’s cold and just not as appealing. Plus, it’s taking up valuable area that can be used as storage space. Having a dedicated gym space in our home would be ideal for me. I had our treadmill (before I sold it) on our covered front porch. I have my kettle bells in the office, the yoga mat and videos are in the living room where the DVD player is, and my TRX bands are anchored in our master closet. If we had an exercise room, I could have all that in one space, and it actually would free up other space in our house and make it look less cluttered!

Rooms that are dedicated to a single purpose are not common in the average home. When we think of these rooms, we typically see them in magazines where they are set up with a perfectly made bed, a spare dresser, fresh flowers, etc. The family game room area would house an insanely comfortable sectional for movie watching and a large coffee table that would allow board games, card games and lots of area for drawing space. In that same room would be the ping pong table, dart board and storage for our game paraphernalia. I could also have this room double as the “sleepover” room for the kids to crash when they have friends over or when additional family wants to stay when we have the other guests those few times throughout the year. One room we do have that’s used for its intended purpose is an office. It could have been used as a den as well, but with my husband being self-employed and the cub master of a local pack, we needed a space dedicated to his stuff. There’s a desk, storage bookshelves, etc. We also put a small sofa in there and a second television so it could do double-time as a den, but we still consider it the office. It’s truly a blessing that he can keep all his piles in one location instead of having them scattered throughout the house. I just wish there was enough space in there for a second desk that I could use when I pay bills and need a space for my laptop. (Instead my stuff is tucked into an armoire in our master bedroom). It’s a waste not to use these spaces if you have them already. You paid extra for that square footage, so you may as well make the most of them.

COLOR CABINETS Whether it is a dresser, a bathroom vanity, kitchen cupboards or a kitchen island, cabinets are no longer a standard white or wood. People are bringing color into their homes through use of color in their cabinets and other furnishings. If you are one who enjoys DIY projects, chalk paint is a popular way to refinish dressers, cabinets, bookcases and more. Chalk paint gives the surface a chalky texture and is often used with a soft wax that seals the paint and produces a matte finish. If you are seeking a more distressed look, some recommend sanding the painted surface and exposing the wood underneath. There are countless options to bring a pop of color to your home interior.

Spruce it up With Succulents Whether you have a green thumb or not, succulents are the perfect plant to bring some of the outside indoors. Because they require little maintenance and are resilient, they make the perfect accent to your dĂŠcor. One popular trend when it comes to succulents is tabletop terrariums. You can simply use a large mason jar and place some porous pebbles on the bottom followed by a thin layer of moss, potting charcoal and soil and another layer of stones, securing the succulent among the stones. For some variety, try adding seashells to your display or even some cactus plants.

The Color of Cop per It is a popular trend in light fixtures, backsplashes, countertops and accent pieces; the color of copper adds class and warmth to any room in your home. And the good news is that adding some copper to your home dĂŠcor does not have to be expensive. You can simply take gold spray paint and add some bling to something you find at the thrift store. Kitchens are a popular place where copper lighting and accents are being seen more and more. From copper countertops, kitchen tables, sinks and light fixtures to canisters and cookware, there are countless ways to add class to your home!

Mosaic Tile Backsp lash While a tile backsplash has a functional purpose to protect the walls in your kitchen or bath, more and more people are using them to create beautiful pieces of art. If you are looking to provide your kitchen or bathroom with a little flare, using mosaic tile for your backsplash is a popular trend. While providing a classy look, it allows you to maximize your creativity given the vast amount of colors and patterns available. Whether your home is traditional or contemporary, mosaic tiles will add class and elegance to your space.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, venture out to the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, Montana. Located just outside Glacier National Park, the Inn provides over 30K of groomed skated and classic trails. They also have rooms available to lodge in, whether you rent a family cabin, a room in the old log lodge, or sleep in one of the converted luxury rail cars and cabooses. The Izaak Walton Dining Car is a favorite of the locals and guests alike, and at the end of the day you’ll find most of the guests in the bar sipping their hot toddies while playing cards or cribbage.

Whitefish’s newest lodging destination, The Firebrand Hotel, is located in the heart of downtown, just a block from Main Street and across from the local middle school. Its sophisticated urban decor invites you to sit and relax by the fire with a coffee or cocktail. With a restaurant, café and spa on site, you’ll never have to leave the interior if you don’t want to.

While you’re in the area, take the quick drive into Glacier National Park and head to Apgar Village to take in the view of Lake McDonald framed with some of the most breathtaking mountains in the area. The road is closed

Fun Events this Winter If you’ve never been to (or heard of) the Whitefish Winter Carnival, plan a trip out this February and you won’t be disappointed. Started by a group of locals in the 1950s, the carnival will take place during February 3 through 5 this year, with events scattered throughout the month of January leading up to it. It’s a great way to shake off cabin fever and combat the blues of winter. The founding legend goes that the Nordic god, Ullr, found his home on Big Mountain, along with his Prime Minister and Queen. Their quiet mountain retreat was soon disturbed by the local Yetis’ attempt to kidnap the Queen, so Ullr and his followers fought off the intruders. When humans arrived to the valley, Ullr became their King, and every winter he

In short, be prepared for plenty of parties and grown men and women frolicking downtown in costumes. Be sure to keep an eye out for those pesky Yetis, too. Places to Eat The Tupelo Grill, located on Central Ave. downtown, is a New Orleans fair eatery that provides good vibes, great sights and delicious southern comfort food and has a beautiful newly remodeled bar area great for before or after dinner cocktails. Nightlife

My favorite après ski cocktail has to be at the Spotted Bear Spirits, a newer craft distillery making gin and vodka and other tasty treats like house infused vodkas, limoncello and coffee liqueur. They are open daily from noon to 8pm and offer tasty hand-mixed creative libations, bottle sales, and Montana-made gifts. Be sure to stop by.

The Great Northern Bar, cornered on the middle of Central and 1st Street, is the local nightlife establishment that you’ll just have to see for yourself. Decorated with the business signs of local establishments long gone and serving a variety of tall cans and cheap mixed drinks, you can find a roaring band entertaining locals and out-of-towners alike. Also located downtown on Central Ave., the brewery serves up locally made craft beer, wine and light bites. PROBIOTICS – AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR DIET JUST WHAT ARE “PROBIOTICS” anyway? We see advertisements for them as supplements, as an ingredient in yogurt and more. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are beneficial to your overall health, particularly your digestive system. The word “bacteria” typically alarms people as they likely equate it with illness. However, did you know your body is full of bacteria? Probiotics are known at the “good” bacteria and should be embraced—not avoided. It is especially important to supplement your diet with probiotics when you are taking antibiotics for an illness. This will help balance your body chemistry. There are many foods which contain probiotics so it is relatively simple to work them into your meal plans.

has “live and active” cultures will help you identify which brand will help aid in digestion due to probiotics.

Yogurt is the most familiar source of probiotics. Eating yogurt that

While we often hear of broccoli, green beans, carrots and asparagus, radishes are a vegetable that gets little attention. But if we knew all the benefits that consuming them brings, we may just start adding them to our diet. Here are just some of the ways they can contribute to healthy eating: Aids with digestion Prevent viral infections Elimiates toxins Helps to prevent against cancer Relieves indigestion Low calories, high nutritional value Helps keep you hydrated

Other foods include sauerkraut, miso soup and “soft” cheeses such as gouda cheese. Other sources that may surprise you include sour pickles and sourdough bread. Of course, there is always acidophilus milk and supplements found at your local drug store. Consuming probiotics can help with digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infectious diarrhea (caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites) and antibiotic-related diarrhea. But the benefits are not just limited to our digestive tract. Some studies have shown that probiotics can help with skin conditions such as eczema, urinary and vaginal health, the prevention of allergies and colds, and oral health. Next time you make out that grocery list, be sure to include food with probiotics…your body will thank you!

SKI, RIDE AND FUNDRAISE! 24 Hours of Schweitzer benefits cystinosis research By Patty Hutchens Photos courtesy of Schweitzer.com WHEN YOUR CHILD IS SICK, you would stop at nothing to make sure he or she is healthy. That is exactly what Brian and Tricia Sturgis have done. To date, their nonprofit foundation has helped to raise over $925,000 for cystinosis research. The couple’s son, Hank, was diagnosed in November of 2007 with the rare genetic disease that affects only 2,000 people worldwide. One of the organization’s signature fundraisers is right around the corner on March 24 and 25 at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. The event, 24 Hours of Schweitzer, is limited to 200 participants so you will want to register and start to plan soon! The fundraiser offers a unique opportunity to ski and ride Schweitzer for a full 24 hours—and contribute to a great cause at the same time! There are teams of two or four people who in addition to skiing and riding will compete in hourly challenges that promise to be fun and keep everyone engaged. The event will conclude on Saturday evening with an awards party and auction that will feature food from around the world. Included in the $150 per person registration fee are the following: lift access, event T-shirt, lunch feed, dinner feed, midnight feed, equipment support, sleeping bag accommodations at Lakeview Lodge, limited hotel discounts at the Selkirk Lodge and one ticket to the awards dinner. Each person is required to provide a minimum of $100 in pledges, but the good news is most go way above and beyond that. In fact, if you bring in a minimum of $750 in donations, you will receive a 24 Hours of Schweitzer jacket. What are you waiting for? Sign up now for this great opportunity to not only have a blast at the mountain, but you may just help save a life. For more information, log onto www.24hoursforhank.org/events
