WE ALL DO IT. We set our resolutions each year and many of us work diligently to accomplish them. I love the feeling of starting over fresh and new each year. Some of us are great at sticking to the plan, while most of us usually fall back into our old habits. So this year we at Living Local set out to change that by coming up with some easy, yet powerful, resolutions that we all can keep. By taking the focus off of ourselves and putting it on others we feel these resolutions will have a bigger impact on our own lives. Month 1. Reach out to someone close to you and let them know how much they mean to you. A simple text, phone call or even message sent on Facebook will do! This simple gesture will impact you more than you know. Month 2. When ordering your coffee or food at your favorite place, greet the person behind the counter with “good morning or afternoon, how is your day going?” prior to ordering. Try not to rush right into your order. Be thoughtful and polite with a smile on your face. Month 3. Pick your favorite LOCAL charity and donate $25 or more, or whatever you can spare. We most likely spend a lot more than this on things we don’t need. Although it may not seem like a lot, $25 can help tremendously.

ABOUT THE COVER IT IS THE SEVENTH anniversary of Sandpoint Living Local, and although we have been around for over 27 years and changed the name, our philosophy of providing good news and connecting our community has stayed the same. This month’s cover photo of Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort was our first cover back in 2009 when we took over the Newsline. Since then we have blossomed into what we all now know and love: Sandpoint Living Local. We look forward to continuing the Living Local tradition for years to come!

SAVE HEARTACHE AND MONEY SPEND A LITTLE EXTRA FOR THE OPINION OF A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER

IF YOU HAD JUST SPENT $7,000 on new furniture, would it have been worth an extra $100 to ensure that you were making the right decision on that investment? Most people have this concept that interior designers are too expensive; so to save money, they try to just do it on their own. However, all the time you spent worrying, asking your friends what they think, scrolling through pictures on the Internet, and running around with color swatches, it was probably worth that extra $100, right? Most interior designers charge for their time at an hourly rate. Even if that hourly rate is $100, think of all the things that can be accomplished in an hour! Their professional opinion is worth its weight in gold if it prevents you from purchasing something that throws off the whole space. Maybe that custom upholstered sofa just won’t fit where you thought it should. That $100 investment paid to someone who spent

A TIME TO SPEND

hours of school to learn appropriate space planning just saved your bacon on having to eat that $3,000 sofa. Or maybe it fits perfectly, but a color in the upholstery that you picked doesn’t coordinate with the new carpet and window coverings you just had installed. Darn! That $100 would have insured that it all blended perfectly. Interior designers don’t go to school to learn how to wear scarves and drink wine. We go to school to learn about how to design interior spaces and coordinate finishes. There is a big difference between someone that calls themselves an interior decorator and someone that has the professional title of interior designer.

Designers are required to earn a degree from an accredited university or college, work in the field for a required number of years under a licensed professional, and then pass a series of tests to earn their certification. This insures that whatever they put together not only looks good, but is safe for the people using the space. Interior designers are liable for the health, safety and wellness of the individuals using the spaces they put together. Even little things that most people don’t think about, like making sure that appropriate wall sconces are selected so that when a person is walking by they can’t bump into it or hit their head when they stand up. In a restaurant or public space, the designer insures that if there’s an emergency, there is enough circulation space that all persons can safely evacuate. There are many building codes that must be addressed when planning spaces. These professionals also insure that when you remodel, you aren’t doing something detrimental to your home, like digging into a designated plumbing trench or accidently coming up with an idea that requires an electrical or plumbing miracle. Most of the time when you hire an interior designer, they pass along their trade discount pricing and either just charge you a percentage of the overall budget or an hourly rate, but not both. It’s like hiring a contractor—you expect that they will buy supplies for your house at their discount pricing and provide them to you at an agreed upon marked-up percentage. Long story short, hiring an interior designer could save you some major money and heartache, so don’t be afraid to budget in an extra few hundred dollars for a professional opinion.

Of course, you can always hope that interest rates will rise, and perhaps they will. As you may know, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at record lows in recent years to stimulate lending and thereby boost the economy. But rates can’t get much lower, and if inflation were to heat up, the Fed could reverse course by starting to raise rates. However, if you’re going to do a good job of building financial assets for retirement, you really can’t afford to play “wait-and-see” with interest rates. Instead, consider the following moves: • Rebalance your portfolio. No matter what your situation, it’s a good idea to periodically rebalance your investment portfolio to help ensure it still reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. If you’re concerned about low rates harming your future investment income, you have more reason than ever to review your portfolio and make adjustments as needed, relative to your objectives. For example, if it seems that your portfolio has become “overweighted” in any one vehicle, you may need to change your investment mix, keeping in mind your individual risk tolerance. • Redefine “retirement.” Retiring from one career doesn’t have to mean retiring

SandpointLivingLocal.com

24

from work altogether. If you decide to work part time, do some consulting or even open your own small business, you may be able to earn enough income to take some of the “pressure” off your investment portfolio in terms of providing you with the money you need to live on during retirement. Also, by working during your nominal retirement years, you may be able to delay taking Social Security until you’re a little older, when your monthly checks can be larger. • Review your withdrawal strategy. During your retirement, the amount you choose to withdraw from your investments each year will depend on several factors, including the size of your portfolio and the amount of income it is providing. As you chart your retirement strategy, you’ll need to factor in a realistic withdrawal rate. • Re-examine sources of investment income. You may want part of your retirement income to come from investments that offer protection of principal. If so, you don’t have to settle for the lowest-rate vehicles. By looking at the various alternatives and blending them with your overall portfolio, you may be able to boost your income without significantly increasing your investment risk. In short, just because interest rates are low, you don’t have to lower your retirement expectations — as long as you plan ahead and explore your options.

CHANGES IN YOUR ! y m A HOUSEHOLD? r o e i ll Jod

Ca

TIPS FOR UPDATING YOUR INSURANCE

U P-TO - DAT E ? (BPT) - THE AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD is changing. The typical single-family home has evolved in the 21st century. Today, it’s not uncommon for older parents to move in with their grown children, and with the combined rise in housing costs and debt from college loans, more college graduates are moving home with their parents. In fact, 47 percent of adults in their 40s and 50s either have a parent aged 65 or older living with them and are raising a child or financially supporting an adult child, according to the Pew Research Center. Along with larger family meals and more loads of laundry, there are important insurance considerations that today’s households need to consider. Making sure you are covered will go a long way to ensure the safety and financial well-being of your loved ones. When your parents move in You probably remember having a few “tough talks” with your parents when you were growing up. If your parent or an elderly relative is moving in with you, it’s time to have another one of these talks. One of the biggest points to discuss is finances, which includes insurance. You want to be sure your parents are up-to-date with their auto and life insurance premiums. And if your relative is bringing valuable possessions into your home, you may need to update your homeowners policy. Also important is discussing potential longterm healthcare needs and discussing end-oflife wishes.

When adult children move home It’s not often someone in their mid-20s is excited about moving back in with their parents. But almost one-third of adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are living with their parents.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Make it your New Year's resolution to perform a review of your coverages! You may even save some money!

This transition can be expensive. Experts say hosting an adult child can cost between $8,000 and $18,000 per year. Therefore, from the beginning, you should set clear expectations. How long do they plan on staying? What is their work schedule? Will they help pay bills and insurance? As long as your child lives in the same household as you, there is no age limit to how long they can be listed on your auto insurance. However, 26 is now the maximum age that your child can be covered on your health insurance plan. Another insurance consideration is whether to include any of their expensive electronics or other personal belongings on your homeowners insurance policy. If so, will they help pay if the cost of the policy goes up? To help avoid misunderstandings, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners created a Welcome Home contract for hosting your adult children. To download the contract and find other helpful resources, including tips and information to help all of you make the right insurance decisions, visit www.InsureUonline.org.

Customer service is our number one priority. Let us customize an insurance policy to fit your specific needs.

PET PEARLIES HEALTHY TEETH CAN LEAD TO BETTER OVERALL HEALTH BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL

GET AN EXAM

DOES YOUR PET’S MOUTH SMELL like dirty socks or day-old fish? If so, he or she might be suffering from halitosis, putting him or her at risk for infection, pain and organ problems. Similar to humans, the better care we give to our pet’s mouth, the longer their potential lifespan. So, if you love your pet, treat him or her to a full mouth examination as soon as possible, especially if you need nose plugs to take a peek under the lip.

human formulations because, not only do they taste bad, some ingredients can be toxic. Can I just use my fingernail to remove calculus? First of all, calculus is very hard to remove by hand. Even if “chipped off,” disease under the gum line hasn’t been addressed. Dull or improperly cared for equipment can cause enamel damage, set up a rough surface for plaque to accumulate faster and expose the next layer, dentin, which is very sensitive to air and temperature.

Plaque is actually an accumulation of bacteria and is bad for the mammalian body. Frequent removal is key to an excellent hygiene program. If not brushed daily, plaque will progress into a hard and cement-like form called calculus. Infection commences, bone loss occurs and tooth attachment loosens, which can be quite painful. In addition to loose teeth, gum inflammation spreads bacteria to the liver, kidneys and heart.

Why is anesthesia necessary to clean my pet’s teeth? Anesthesia provides three important functions: immobilization in order to clean properly above and below the gum line, pain relief and the ability to place a tube into the windpipe so bacterial products do not enter the lungs.

It can be easy to brush your pet’s teeth using a small soft-bristled toothbrush and veterinary toothpaste. Remember to stay away from

What is the cost of a professional cleaning? It varies among veterinarians, and it is difficult to determine precisely what the procedure will cost until we know the status of your pet’s teeth and gums. We can quote general cleaning and radiograph fees, every patient has these in common. A follow-up treatment plan will be communicated to you after a tooth-by-tooth exam is conducted under anesthesia.

It can be easy to brush your pet’s teeth using a small soft-bristled toothbrush and veterinary toothpaste.

What can I do to increase the interval between professional cleanings? Daily brushing helps tremendously. Recently, prescription diets manufactured specifically to help control plaque have gained much momentum. Rinses, enzymatic chew toys and breath fresheners combine to help limit the bacteria count, tartar accumulation and gum disease, thus lengthening the time between professional cleanings. What toys should I avoid to protect my pet’s teeth? Chewing on objects harder than teeth (rocks, cooked bones) can easily lead to cracked teeth. Cow and horse hoof commonly cause damage to the upper premolars. Rough tug-of-war games, especially in young animals, can lead to disruption of permanent teeth eruption. What happens if my pet cracks a tooth? If your pet fractures a tooth, treatment options include vital pulp capping, root canal therapy or extraction. Unattended, the exposed root and nerve can be quite painful initially. Moreover, these teeth are considered contaminated and can lead to future infection. BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FEST Three days of incredible films. By Colin Anderson

ONE OF THE WEST’S most celebrated events is making a three-day stop in Sandpoint. The Banff Mountain Film Festival is held each fall in Banff, Alberta. Photographers, writers and filmmakers premiere works of outdoor wonder and exploration from all over the world at the nine-day event. Luckily for us, we can see many of these films without a passport.

pushes these athletes to do something that might sound impossible. The film synopsis provided by the festival for the film “50” reads: “Follow one man’s bold attempt to run 50 mountain marathons over 50 peaks in just 50 days, around the spectacular landscapes New Zealand, in order to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation.”

The film festival’s yearly tour is stopping off at the Panida Theater in downtown Sandpoint January 19 through January 21. Nearly 30 films will be presented over the three-day celebration. Stories include mountain biking 1,280 kilometers through the desert, analyzing the relationship between sled dogs and their mushers, downhill skiing in Iran and whitewater kayaking around the globe.

Tickets are available at the door for $19 or you can purchase them in advance at Burger Express locations in Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry. Advanced tickets are $16, and you are encouraged to purchase them as the festival will more than likely sell out. Those with a ticket can go to as many shows over the three days as they would like.

These films not only highlight the beauty of our world and the limits of what the human body and mind can do, but also show real emotion that

“We feel very blessed with the amount of success we’ve had in a short period of time, and we believe our philosophy is something people have been looking for,” said Denova of the business’s growth over the past 10 months. If you are seeking help navigating the world of investments, contact Gateway Financial Partners. Their knowledge and level of service will give you peace of mind for the future.

WHEN PLANNING FOR YOUR financial future, it can be a difficult road to navigate, but having a partner to guide you through the process can make all the difference. Gateway Financial Partners, owned by Ron Denova and Trudy Leen, opened its doors in March of 2016, but the pair has been working in the financial industry for decades. “Trudy and I decided to make the move from institutional planning and investment management to offering independent, local services to our community,” said Denova, who adds that he wanted to have the ability to focus on each client’s unique needs rather than being tied to corporate priorities and constraints. “We feel very fortunate that our vision has been so well received and supported here in North Idaho.” Gateway Financial Partners provides not only investment advice and planning, but also financial education, retirement planning, asset management and investment and brokerage services. “Usually, wealth is not a matter of fate or luck,” said Denova. “We can all take practical steps toward financial freedom, and even if we do not end up rich, those steps may improve our personal finances and retirement prospects.” Some of those steps include living within your means, getting rid of bad debt, starting a savings plan and speaking with a financial advisor. Because they are not tied to a certain institution, Gateway Financial Partners is able to “think outside the box,” something which is important since each and every client has a different need. “This does not mean adding

risk,” explained Denova. “It means adding additional diversification thereby reducing risk.” At Gateway Financial Partners, clients are not limited to proprietary products. Plans and investments are determined by clients’ specific needs and preferences.

“Success, to us, is about more than the returns or the bottom line,” said Denova. “We believe in the deep relationships that we build for the long-term.”

Gateway Financial Partners 515 Pine Street, Suite D Sandpoint, ID 83864 208.946.5002

Another unique aspect of Gateway Financial Partners is their commitment to making sure all their clients’ questions are answered, whether they are financial, legal or otherwise. Gateway works with professionals throughout the community and is developing a network of strategic alliance partners in financial fields such as Certified Public Accountants, attorneys, insurance agents and bankers, who can assist their clients with very specific needs and situations. Both Denova and Leen believe in giving back to the community that has supported them throughout the years. Denova is on the financial committee of Kinderhaven, serves as a care pastor in marriage with his wife Christine, and is in his seventh season as a referee for Upward basketball. Lifetime resident Trudy Leen is a board member of the Luke Commission, a medical mission in Swaziland, and also heads the Toys for Tots drive in Priest River. A native of Chicago, Denova worked on the floor at the Chicago Board of Trade for nearly 20 years. Eager to break away from the big city life, he stumbled upon an article in USA Today about Sandpoint. “I was reading it on a packed commuter train,” recalled Denova who shortly thereafter told his wife of his desire to move to Idaho. The couple and their son moved here in 2006.

IN LIFE, KATHY PELLAND touched many lives. Now, nearly 20 years after her sudden passing at the hands of a drunk driver on the Long Bridge, her spirit continues to live on and is changing the lives of members of this tightknit community in amazing ways. The grass roots organization, Angels Over Sandpoint, was formed to honor the memory of Pelland. What began as a group of few, the local nonprofit now has over 70 members, many of whom never even knew Pelland but are touched by the stories they hear. Paula Marcinko was a friend of Kathy Pelland and is one of the founders of Angels Over Sandpoint. “Kathy was my friend. (She was) a good friend, but there are so many people who can say that in this town,” said Marcinko. “When she died, several of us got together and decided to have a dance to add to her memorial funds. We had it at the Sagle Grange. We raised $3,000 and gave the money to North Idaho Bikeways to help

build the bicycle paths from Sagle to Sandpoint and Sandpoint to Dover.” The group of friends then wondered what do we do next, and it was Gail Lyster who suggested they continue to raise funds. “So almost 20 years later the Angels Over Sandpoint have given over a million dollars to residents in need in Bonner County,” said Marcinko. Marcinko, like many in this town, have fond memories of the fun loving and generous spirit that Pelland was. “She would dress like a clown and deliver candy to a young friend in the hospital. She would offer help if she knew you were painting your living room. She would help with anything, and she had an amazing imagination!” recalled Marcinko, who adds that a recurring theme throughout the years has been people saying, “Kathy helped me when…” The two friends used to enjoy collecting rocks for landscaping, going to Eichardts for Caesar salad and garlic fries and just stopping by to

visit one another. “She was always there for me and tons of others that lived in Sandpoint,” said Marcinko. Like Pelland was, the Angels have been an answer to prayer to many living in Sandpoint. Whether it is rides to a medical appointment or hosting a large fundraiser to help someone with mounting medical expenses, the group’s enthusiasm and generosity has made a large impact on the most vulnerable. Some of the more unique ways in which the Angels Over Sandpoint have made a difference include purchasing orthopedic shoes for an elderly person who could not afford them, providing a mother and father with dinner and lodging at Christmas time when they lost their child, and paying for dentures for a hard working woman who was ashamed to smile. But it is not just families and individuals in crisis who have been blessed by the generosity of the Angels Over Sandpoint; there are many of the area’s youth that have benefitted from the

their lives and looking for a new direction such as going back to college.

Each year, in conjunction with Ivano’s Ristorante, the Angels hold The Italian Open Golf Scramble, the proceeds of which go to the Jim Lippi Family Scholarships. In a ceremony in May of 2016, there were six scholarships given to high school seniors, ranging from $500 to $1,000 each, to assist them in furthering their post high school education.

Their fundraisers are many including the Angels Over Sandpoint High Tea, Sandpoint Style and numerous dances over the years including an annual New Year’s Eve party. The biggest fundraiser of all, which takes in approximately $40,000, is the annual Follies, which is set this year for the first weekend in March.

Also benefiting the youth is the Angels Over Sandpoint / Festival at Sandpoint Arts Scholarship, which focuses on various talents including vocal, writing, visual arts and dance and theater—rotating each year. As a reflection of their mission, The Angels Over Sandpoint also recognize Bonner County graduating seniors who have given back to the community through community service.

As Marcinko recalls time spent with her friend she said, “Kathy loved to love…and she always had a smile even though you knew there was something troubling her.” While memories warm the heart, there is still a sadness as though she passed away yesterday. “She died in 1997 so next year will be 20 years. That day Sandpoint stopped,” said Marcinko. “There were over 400 people at her memorial.”

Another way the Angels Over Sandpoint help area youth is with their annual Back to School program, providing backpacks and school supplies to children in Bonner County prior to each school year. With over 2,000 students in our community eligible for the free and reduced lunch program, the Angels Over Sandpoint start with those individuals when reaching out to families to let them know of the assistance that is available. Each year they provide approximately 1,000 students with backpacks and school supplies.

To donate to the Angels Over Sandpoint, you can mail a tax deductible donation to P.O. Box 2369, Sandpoint, ID 83864. Visit their website at angelsoversandpoint.org or thieir Facebook page at f/angelsoversandpoint for more information.

TEACHERS WITH A BIG HEART

LORI BOPP KOOTENAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BY PATTY HUTCHENS

MAKING LEARNING FUN WATCHING KIDS LEARN and grow is rewarding for any teacher. But for Kootenai Elementary kindergarten teacher, Lori Bopp, she especially enjoys the joy and enthusiasm her students exhibit when they are engaged in learning. “In kindergarten, the world is a fresh and magical place,” she said. “The best moments are when I see a student grasp something they have been struggling with. They are so excited and proud. I often tell my kids that I have the best job in the world.” Kindergarten is a time when each day comes with new experiences and great strides are made in learning, something Bopp finds rewarding. “I enjoy seeing the growth my students make over the course of the year,” she said. “When they come to kindergarten, most students are working hard to learn their letter names and sounds. Many cannot yet write their name. By the end of the year, they can read short books and write one or two sentences.” In her fourth year as a teacher, Bopp said she wants her students to know that they can do anything they set their minds to. And she should know. “Don’t believe those that say you can’t (accomplish something),” said Bopp of the life lesson she wants to instill in her students. “Listen to the people who say you can. I went back to school to obtain my teaching certificate while working fulltime and raising my two young kids. I knew I could do it as long as I worked hard. It wasn’t easy, but I wasn’t going to let anyone stop me.” It is that determination to follow her dream that has made Bopp a great teacher. “Lori Bopp is an asset not only to her

students, but to our school as a whole. No matter the day or situation, Mrs. Bopp comes to work with an ever-present smile and positive attitude. Her optimism and energy are contagious to students, parents and staff alike,” shared Kootenai Elementary Principal Kelli Knowles. “What I appreciate the most about Mrs. Bopp is that she takes the time to deeply connect with each of her kindergarteners. She truly understands that learning is built on the back of forming relationships: Mrs. Bopp invests time into each of her students, because she believes in each of them as learners as well as individuals.” It is clear to Knowles that the kindergarten students feel Bopp’s genuine love and support. “As a kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bopp is creating the foundation of learning in Kootenai School. I am so proud that we have her to ignite the love of education in our youngest students,” said Knowles.

SANDPOINT

S U C IN FO A THANK YOU NOTE TO MY HOMETOWN BY KENDALL STRATTON. PHOTOS BY AND COURTESY OF KENDALL STRATTON.

THE APPRECIATION THAT I HAVE for growing up in this beautiful small town that many of us are lucky enough to call home never really hit me until I left after high school to pursue my higher education opportunity. The saying is true, “you never really know what you have until it’s gone,” and although I never really lost Sandpoint, being away and meeting new people, experiencing different places and embarking on new adventures opened my eyes to a new perspective on life. Yes, leaving town and having these opportunities has assisted me in growing as an individual, but these components also made me realize where my heart will forever remain. No matter where life may take me in the future, my heart and soul, my gratitude and passions will forever lie within this town tucked between the mountains in the panhandle of North Idaho. I have never seized the opportunity to fully express how indebted I am to this amazing community. Aside from the breathtaking scenery and the endless list of outdoor activities, there is so much more to our town than some people may think; more aspects that are unrecognizable to the naked eye. In my years of living here, I have grown to believe that an amazing place

to live stems from the great community that encompasses the name of the town. Yes, numerous people come here to vacation throughout the seasons. Summer vacationers pour in to experience the lake life. Skiers arrive in the midst of the winter wonderland to bask in the glory of our Schweitzer Mountain. With those one to two-week vacations, however, it is

A community that relies heavily on the support of its members is a community that thrives as, not only a town, but a thriving family within itself. not truly enough time to experience the people of an area; the true beauty of a small town. One can drool over the mountains and the lake, one can be ecstatic about the sightseeing boat rides along the lake or the powder-filled blue bird days up on the mountain, but to experience a community at its core takes a little more time.

It takes interest. It takes a willingness to learn why somewhere is as supportive and successful as this. The support, the service, the appreciation and the unconditional love of the people that we all share here year round is truly what make this place one of the most beautiful small towns in America. Success for everyone in the community has been a large focus, led with even more encouragement, by the people that we see day to day. The amount of time and effort from community members that have been put into our school systems is a phenomenal trait of Sandpoint. Scholarships are vast, the resources students can utilize are many, and the support is unconditional and endless. No matter what students might want to pursue after high school—whether their goal is to enter the workforce, join a military branch, or attend undergraduate and graduate school, there is always someone here to lend a hand. Sometimes it may take a little digging, but there is always an option and an avenue to take to get exactly where you want to be. I have realized over the past four years that much of my education after high school has had to

do a lot with the people that have been in my life. My parents, of course, have and forever will be my biggest supporters (and I am forever thankful for them). But many of Sandpoint’s inhabitants are a large part of my college dreams coming true as well. From getting my first job at Ivano’s to countless organizations to lend a hand and take time out of one’s day to help someone in need, these are just a few of the components that are required to shape an individual. I believe that our surroundings have created a sense of selflessness and that unconditional love aspect that I mentioned before. Without the assistance of the people around us, there would be no community, there would be no unconditional love, and Sandpoint wouldn’t exist as the amazing place it is today.

especially when the people around you do not understand exactly what you are going through. The way that Sandpoint came together and showed an endless support of everyone who was deeply affected by these losses is only one of the many reasons I have come to love this place so much. And being that small town that we all come to love, no matter what the extent of the happening, every community member is affected in one way or another. That’s why I am so thankful for the people around me in times like these. Yes, I am sure I may sound a little odd to be saying that these losses are a highlight of the community. They’re most definitely not. But throughout life we will always have the unexpected bumps in the road or even complete roadblocks. It is what a person does after the initial impact that is the highlight of that occurrence. Sandpoint, in my eyes, has had many impacts, many losses, many unexpected turns of the table but has come through the darkness with such grace and beauty in what people are willing to do to come together as a community, as a family. The togetherness and dedication that each and every member of the family provides will never be forgotten and should never be taken for granted. THAT is what makes it so beautiful.

I graduated with the Class of 2012 from Sandpoint High School. During the four years of our educational journey together and for years after graduating, our class experienced many things that seemed unfair and did not quite make sense. Many did not know how to process the happenings that occurred. A few classmates of ours, and not to mention exceptional human beings, were taken away much too soon from our community. We have also seen this much more recently as well. But although there is a loss of a physical presence, there emerges a cultivation of love and support out of the darkness, enriching the community as a whole.

Sandpoint truly is a blessing to all who take the time to recognize even the smallest of things that our community does for each and every one of us. As a 23-year-old who has grown up here almost my entire life, I was naïve to the extent of support that the youth of the community gains from our surroundings. People are around every corner willing to help. A community that relies heavily on the support of its members is a community that thrives

Times of hardship and heartbreak are those moments that bring out the true colors in people. I was away at school in Oregon for many of the losses of my classmates. Grieving from afar is sometimes extremely difficult,

as, not only a town, but a thriving family within itself. That family is what I am so thankful for, and I cannot thank the town of Sandpoint enough. Among the many reasons why I love this place, the biggest qualifier for me wanting to return is the people. The people who have given so much for truly nothing in return, the people who smile and say “hello even if you have never officially met, and the people who share the same unconditional love for a place as beautiful as this is the reason I always want to come back. And because of these people who I am so grateful to have in my life, I want to be able to give back to this community as much as I have received over the years. I want to be able to help kids who were just like me to reach their goals and want to do the same thing in the future. So thank your teachers who spend every day helping us learn something new. Thank your employers who help you create a great work ethic. Thank your coaches who teach you about teamwork and your physical abilities. Thank your parents who stand behind you and your dreams. Thank the organizations that give us opportunities to give back. Thank the small business owners who give a local flare to downtown. And thank the next person you pass walking down the sidewalk. Be thankful for every member of our community, because each and every one is just one puzzle piece of the beautiful masterpiece that we all have come to love—Sandpoint.

ATHLETES OF SPENCER THOMPSON & ADDISON EDWARDS

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

SPENCER THOMPSON: DISCIPLINED PREPARATION. This is a lesson that senior Spencer Thompson said he has learned through his involvement in sports, especially over the course of the last year.

208.946.4330 DR. JOSEPH JOHNSON, DMD HWY 200 IN PONDERAY, NEXT TO THE ELKS GOLF COURSE

“Prior to this season, I put in a lot of offseason work with Coach Leiss,” said Spencer, who was the MVP for the junior varsity basketball team last year and is captain of the varsity team this year. “I have improved drastically from last year, and I owe that to preparation. It is something that I now apply to everything I do. If I want to improve in something, I know how best to do it.” Spencer has not only realized success on the basketball court, but in the classroom as well. With a 3.9 GPA, Spencer said he believes maintaining solid grades while in sports is important. His immediate plans following graduation are to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Following completion of his mission, Spencer hopes to attend the University of Utah or BYU.

“I do not plan on playing sports in college, but I will be a very loud fan on the sidelines with my face painted and singing fight songs,” said Spencer. He plans to pursue a career in the area of sports and exercise, possibly majoring in exercise science or athletic training. “Fitness and just being active are very important to me, and it is a lifestyle I want to continue,” said Spencer. “I think careers in those areas will allow me to do that, while also being around competitive sports.”

ADDISON EDWARDS: FOR SENIOR ADDISON Edwards, being part of the Sandpoint High School cheerleading squad for the past four years has given her the gift of incredible friendships as well as important life lessons. “Cheerleading has taught me to never quit if something doesn’t work the first time. Nothing in cheer ever works perfectly the first time, so you have to keep trying until you get it right,” said Addison. “Cheer has definitely taught me perseverance and determination, and those are skills I will need all my life.” Addison shares that there were times she wanted to give up when the stunts or tumbling became too tough. They are difficult skills to acquire, but she stuck with it and is grateful that she did. “I have learned to keep trying when it gets tough, and in that I have become one of the best bases on my team, and I’m still working on my tumbling,” said Addison.

She plans to go to Boise State in the fall and pursue a career in elementary education. “I have always loved working with children, and I believe that getting the chance to influence future generations is the best thing I could give to this world,” she said. As she looks back on her years as a Sandpoint High School cheerleader, she will always treasure the “family” she has made among her cheerleading squad. “We spend tons of time together bonding outside of practice, games and competition,” said Addison. “When you put your life in the hands of another person, you are bound to bond with them, and that is what my team does every week. This year more than any of my others we are closer than ever.”

LOCAL SANDPOINT SISTERS, Hailey and Sarah Hines, founders and operators of Planted Roots Productions, were awarded the Audience Choice Award at the Sandpoint Film Festival last November at The Panida Theater for their film, “Peace Among the Black Hills.”

“The Sandpoint Festival was the first one we entered in,” Hailey said, “and the first one won.” The sisters’ goal for their production company is simple: to bring amazing, life changing art to the world via film. Hailey is an actor, model and director. Sarah also acts, directs and writes the screenplays. “Peace Among Black Hills” was co-written by both sisters and is a story of love, loss and overcoming hardship during the war with the Plains Indians. “It was Sarah’s baby,” said co-writer Hailey. “And the great part is that 90 percent of the crew was female and local to Sandpoint.” That doesn’t happen often in the film industry, where the workforce is predominantly male in Hollywood. “The people we cast for ‘Peace Among Black Hills’ were all on board with what we were doing,” Hailey stated. “We shot it in nine days and only had four days with the main cast.”

“They were solid days—no sleeping during that period,” Sarah chuckled. “Peace Among Black Hills” was filmed in Bannock City, an abandoned ghost town in Beaverhead County, near Dillon, Montana. “Locals offered to cook food for us while we were filming. You won’t get that in Hollywood,” Sarah mentioned after being asked what the filming process was like for them. “Rattlesnakes were everywhere, though.” The film has been dubbed as “Young Guns” meets “Dances with Wolves” with the perfect mix of actual history and make believe, shining both romantic and dark light on the ways of the West. The drama revolves around discrimination during the war with the Plains Indians of the Northwest. “The first quarter of the film is dedicated to the history of Native Americans and the way that our country treated them,” Hailey Hines said. There’s a personal stake in the story as well, bringing light to a dark part of our country’s history: Indian dissemination. “Our greatgrandmother and her sister were taken from their family and relocated,” Sarah explained. “They were both taken to Oklahoma and adopted into a white family; the Hawkins family.” The film’s protagonists mirror that tale, One Star and Jacob are both Lakota born halfbreeds, and One Star is taken to the Carlisle Indian Institute in Pennsylvania.

“The movie is very historically accurate,” Hailey added. The sisters entered “Peace Among Black Hills” in several other film festivals as well. “We also entered it into the California Women’s Film Festival, Human Rights Film Festival in Melbourne, Australia, as well as film festivals in North Bend, Seattle, Montana and Sun Valley,” Hailey stated. “Our biggest goal is that hopefully people will see the story and will want to make it into a feature film and will be able to make that happen,” Sarah said. Both Sarah and Hailey became involved in the industry early on. While growing up in Snohomish, Washington and Sandpoint, Idaho, their parents kept them involved in a variety of extracurricular activities that taught them how important it is to help others and share their good fortune with people in need. The sisters then separately studied outside of the area in Washington State: Sarah in Bellevue attending a small private school where she studied acting, along with music, soccer, horseback riding and art. Hailey got her start in Snohomish studying dance as a child and even winning some awards. From there, she went

on to study theater, modeling, acting and film. The sisters’ roles in film initially started for them by helping out with a friend’s film. Their first project as Planted Roots Productions was “Spread the Virus”, a short film which Sarah wrote. “We had been helping other people with their projects, assisting with sound or production,” Sarah stated. “And the short film was to show people what we are capable of.” “Spread the Virus” is a short film about the random acts of kindness and how big an impact they can have on those involved. Sometimes even the smallest act can change someone’s life in a huge way. For the sisters, it isn’t just a film, it’s a call to action to all who see it to be kind, be compassionate, and spread kindness like a virus. The move was filmed locally at the Life Care Center, Sandpoint High School, outside of Winter Ridge, the Grainery, and even the Hines’ home. The Schweitzer Fire Department helped out too, and the sisters even used a firefighter from the force to help with the narration of the film. Both Sarah and Hailey acted as narrators as well. The Hines sisters have deep ties to the area, and both grew up attending and performing in the

“Our family’s history always sparked the interest to study Native American history,” Sarah said. “The schools [Native children were sent to] were way worse than any of the history books make them out to be.” “At the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, there are 170 marked graves, when in fact there are over 800 bodies that have been recovered there,” Sarah added. From 1879 to 1891, over 10,000 Native American children from 140 tribes attended Carlisle to be educated and assimilated. Only 158 graduated.

“We wanted to show how these acts shaped a people as a whole,” Sarah explained, “and also give light to the dark parts of history that don’t get noticed.”

historic Panida Theater. Although they have both moved away for school or life, they both found themselves back here. “Sandpoint seems to be the place we always come back to,” Hailey said. The Hines’ grandmother was involved with a group of ladies that would get together to raise money for several local foundations, including The Panida Theater—or as she liked to call it The “Pan-eye-da,” as a play on the word “Idaho.” Sarah’s first play was at the beloved theater. “They have helped us a ton with auditions and finding actors,” Sarah stated. The Panida also introduced them to Sandpoint Filmmakers Network, a pool of local resources for making films in Sandpoint that meets monthly at the Condo del Sol Clubhouse. The organization provides camera operators, actors, sound technicians an environment for sharing, learning, practicing and executing moviemaking skills. Coming up, the Hines sisters have some projects in the works. “A Thousand Bullets” is another one of Sarah’s creations. She wrote it and both sisters will act in it, while they will bring someone else in to direct. They’re also working on a post-apocalyptic short film that is set after a devastating war; the film contains an underlying message conveying that even when bad things happen in the world, your family is always there. When asked where they see themselves in the future, Hailey jumped right in with, “Making bigger films and having a bigger network of people to work with.” “I would like to be making feature films here locally,” Sarah added. “Even if ‘Peace Among Black Hills’ gets out there with a bigger budget, we would want it filmed here,” Hailey declared. “We have so many different stories that we want to make that we know we will need bigger sources and bigger budgets.” Sarah added. You can get a taste of their upcoming projects on the Planted Roots Production website, www.plantedrootsproductions.com. Their short film “Spread the Virus” is also available to view on the homepage, or on their YouTube channel.

TRUST. RELATIONSHIPS. DEPENDABILITY. These are all principles upon which Jamie Emmer has based his business since it first opened in May of 1990. As owner of Lumber Marketing Services, Emmer is a wood specialty wholesale and retail international distributor. He works closely with builders, contractors and retail lumberyards offering mill-direct lumber sales, wholesale lumber sales, smaller specialty custom orders and custom millwork and framing packages.

something that has always been at the forefront of all he does. “As an environmental physics major in college in the 70s, before environment was a household word, I have been able to bring a better sense of stewardship and sustainability into an industry that at times has lost touch with how we are all connected by the responsible use and development of renewable resources locally and around the world,” shared Emmer. “Our largest customer two years ago was located in Beirut, Lebanon.”

Emmer moved here in 1982 and was attracted by the beauty, the opportunity for outdoor recreation and the friendliness of the people. He and his wife have been blessed to raise their four daughters in North Idaho and are grateful for the opportunity to also work in such a beautiful place. “God has provided me with this opportunity, and the gifts to pursue it,” he said of his business success.

Since 1910, Emmer’s family has worked in the wholesale lumber industry, and he has personal experience in lumber remanufacturing, mill sales, office lumber brokering, ownership of a tree farm, ownership of a retail yard and wholesale distribution. This wide range of experience is one reason he has been able to provide exceptional service, product and pricing throughout the years.

Emmer shares that one of the things he enjoys most about his work at Lumber Marketing Services are the relationships he builds with his customers. “(Those relationships) bring great satisfaction and meaning to my daily responsibilities as a business owner,” he said gratefully. “Helping people achieve their dream home is a privilege and an honor I don’t take lightly.”

With a generous heart and an appreciation of his community, Emmer has given much of his time and talent back to the place he calls home. For almost 15 years he has been involved in Cedar Hills Church as a trustee, elder and care pastor. He also began a volunteer project 14 years ago at a school for at-risk teenage girls near Heron, Montana. Emmer has also served on the board at the Hope Christian Counseling Center for 15 years and has served on the Schweitzer Chapel board and the Filling Station board in Clark Fork. And his generosity does not stop there. A percentage of the profits from Lumber Marketing Services also go towards relief organizations both locally and internationally.

At Lumber Marketing Services, Emmer provides a full line of specialty lumber products including siding, decking, paneling, flooring and timbers in a variety of natural species that include Cedar, Pine and Douglas fir. Lumber Marketing Services also provides imported hardwoods such as Brazilian hardwoods, exotic hardwoods and softwoods.

Health & Lifestyle YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

It’s More Than Just Diet and Exercise Take care of your nervous system for a healthier you! By Dr. Ryan Bones, Beyond Bones Chiropractic

AS WE TRANSITION INTO 2017, many are beginning their “New Year, New You” resolutions. We all know someone who is committed to taking better care of themselves this year. While most focus on eating healthier or getting those six-pack abs, there is one major health aspect we often completely overlook—the health of your nervous system.

to recognize that even things as simple as discretely flexing in the gym mirror actually consists of millions of different signals throughout the body. The brain coordinates this symphony of signals by communicating back and forth on your spinal cord and nerves. If there is any sort of interference in this system, these signals become “static” and our body doesn’t work at 100 percent. Most people associate a nerve issue with pain, but only a small percentage of a nerve’s function is transmitting signals you can feel—the rest is coordinating your body! This means that it’s possible to have problems with this communication in ways that don’t

It sounds nerdy, I know. People don’t often stop to think about the current status of their brain and spinal cord, but they should. Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue and organ in your body. This makes it crucial in keeping us healthy. Without a nervous system, you’d never be able to do those sit ups or digest that kale. It doesn’t take a neurologist

Stick to a Schedule! It helps maintain healthy body weight. Waking up, eating meals and going to bed at the same time each day can help you lose weight, because it allows your body to anticipate the next activity and find the perfect balance. SandpointLivingLocal.com

detect and correct these to help your nervous system communicate freely.

So what can we do to keep our nervous system in peak condition for 2017? Try these three simple tips adapted from a mentor of mine, Dr. James Chestnut:

Think Well

Eat Well No surprise here. What we put into our bodies is equal to what we get out of them, so it IS really important to eat good, nutritious foods and drink lots of water. The “house” that is your body is only as good as the materials you use to build it, including your brain and nerves. Move Well With all the talk of nutrients, there is actually one “nutrient” that your brain craves more than almost any other—movement. Whether it’s wake surfing, dancing or knitting, that movement is feeding your brain. Try a standing desk, walk while you talk on the phone, or finally go to that one yoga class you’ve been meaning to try since 2012. As you’re moving, make sure to not neglect the one thing that has to move well to protect your nervous system— your spine! If one or more of the bones in your spine gets out of place or stops moving, it actually irritates the spinal joints and interferes with the nerves that run through them, and even the cord itself. This is called a vertebral subluxation and can be a factor in many different health issues. A chiropractor can

Most people know to eat well and exercise. What most people don’t know about is the need to think well. That may sound weird, but your thoughts and emotions have physical effects on your body. They are chemical signals just like the millions of other signals in your brain. Study after study confirms the link between emotional health and physical health. Just like the food you eat, what you put in your mind is a direct reflection of what you will get out of it, physically and emotionally. Think of worries, fears, anxieties or doubts as junk food. Even though you know you they are bad for you, it seems as though you consistently find yourself surrounded by them. This year break the cycle. Do a mental “cleanse” and start drinking smoothies packed with gratitude, confidence and love. Simply put, happier people are healthier. To quote one of my favorites Zig Ziglar, “Being positive in life doesn’t get you everything, but it gets you everything better than being negative does.” Your health is no exception! This year, make it a priority to become one of the 8 percent who actually achieve their New Year’s resolution and find true health by taking care of the system that takes care of you—your nervous system!

THE IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D LOW LEVELS CAN LEAD TO A VARIETY OF AILMENTS ASSESS

BY CHRISTINA RUST, DPT

H E A LT H Y T I P SEVERAL RECENT RESEARCH studies have linked low levels of vitamin D to multiple health problems, the most significant being coronary artery disease and chronic pain. In addition, vitamin D deficiency is linked to increased blood pressure, increased insulin resistance, diabetes, heart failure and fatal strokes. Other health issues know to be associated with low vitamin D levels include low bone density, lupus, kidney disease, obesity, ovarian cancer and depression. Low levels of vitamin D have also been implicated in semen quality and reproductive capability. A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is seen in patients with degenerative diseases of the spine. Vitamin D is known to affect vascular endothelium directly or indirectly through up-regulation of the renin-angiotensin system or via induction of smooth muscle proliferation and a proinflammatory state. There is also a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in patients with non-specific musculoskeletal pain, headache and fatigue. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Very few foods naturally contain vitamin D (fatty fish livers are the exception), so dermal synthesis is the major natural source of the vitamin. However, vitamin D from the diet or dermal synthesis is biologically inactive and requires enzymatic conversion to active metabolites. It is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the major circulating form of vitamin D, and then in the kidney to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the active form of vitamin D. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are estimated by measuring it directly or by measuring calcidiol concentrations. There are two primary methods for measuring these levels both involve taking blood samples, non-fasting. Immunoassay is the first and is appropriate for all patients who wish to establish a baseline of their vitamin D levels before they begin to take supplements. The second is appropriate

for individuals who have already begun taking supplemental vitamin D, it is a liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometry or a comparable high-performance liquid chromatograph technique. Vitamin D blood tests are fairly inexpensive; the average costs between $40 to $70. There are even home kits available through reputable companies. Hospital costs tend be a lot more expensive, upwards of $150 to $250. According to several research articles, the reliability and repeatability of the vitamin D assay test is within 5 percent accuracy. Currently, there is not a general agreed upon guideline for the optimal serum 25(OH) D concentration for health maintenance. According to the National Institute for Health, trials of vitamin D favor maintaining the serum 25(OH)D concentration between 20 and 50 ng/mL. Adults who do not have regular effective sun exposure year round should consume at least 600 to 800 international units (units) of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) daily. Older persons confined indoors and other high-risk groups may have low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Precautions should be taken with patients with sarcoidosis, kidney disease, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, hyperparathyroidism and others at risk of hypercalcaemia. A daily dose of 50 μg (2000 IU) vitamin D can be reached by combining non prescription vitamin D supplements, which contain up to 35 to 38 μg (1.400 to 1.520 IU) of vitamin D. The vitamin D supplements should be offered as vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and, for normal healthy adults, without calcium. Hypervitaminosis D symptoms can occur after several months, increasing concentration of calcium blood levels and include the following symptoms; dehydration, vomiting, decreased appetite, irritability, constipation, fatigue, muscle weakness and calcification of the soft tissue.

HEALTHY TIDBITS NEWS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY DR. WILL MIHIN

MENTAL ATTITUDE: Parents Often Miss PTSD in Kids. In a report published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in November of 2016, researchers followed more than 100 children ages two to ten who had experienced a road collision involving a car crash, being hit while walking or were knocked off their bicycle. They found that most parents of kids who still experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after three years didn’t recognize their child’s symptoms. The researchers also observed that children were more likely to suffer PTSD if their parents also suffered from the condition, but even these parents had difficulty recognizing their child’s PTSD. Lead researcher Dr. Richard MeiserStedman added, “This study strengthens the case for considering parental mental health and providing support for both children and their parents in the aftermath of a trauma to reduce the long-term effects for both.” Health Alert: Spend Less Time on Your Smartphone Before Bed. In a study published in November of 2016 in PLOS ONE, it was found that participants who spent more screen-time on their phones, especially if they used their smartphones shortly before bedtime, experienced shorter sleep and reduced sleep

quality. The authors of the study advise that reducing screen-time, particularly before bedtime, may help enhance the length and quality of sleep. Prior studies have suggested that the blue light from electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablets, can overstimulate the brain, making a good night’s sleep elusive. Diet: Low Vitamin D Levels May Increase the Risk of Bladder Cancer. New research reported in the November 2016 issue of Society for Endocrinology shows that bladder cells activate and respond to vitamin D, which can stimulate an immune response. Experts say this finding is important because the immune system may help prevent cancer by identifying and destroying abnormal cells before they develop into cancer. The body usually produces vitamin D through exposure to sunshine, but it’s also obtained from foods such as fatty fish, cheese and eggs. Lead author Dr. Rosemary Bland writes, “As vitamin D is cheap and safe, its potential use in cancer prevention is exciting and could potentially impact on the lives of many people.” Exercise: Can Exercise Shield Against a Week of Overindulgence? A new study reported in November of 2016 at the Integrative Biology

of Exercise 7 Meeting, suggests that exercise protects fat tissue from changes in inflammation levels and fat metabolism caused by a week of overeating. In the study, researchers found an increase in markers of inflammation after one week of overeating among people who do not normally exercise. However, the individuals in the study who participated in at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise over six days per week did not experience an increase in markers of inflammation or changes in glucose tolerance or fat metabolism. The researchers conclude, “Our preliminary findings expand on existing work to support a protective role of exercise in the metabolic response of adipose tissue to brief periods of overeating.” This information should not be substituted for medical advice. Not only does prolonged sitting cause problems, our movement patterns also determine our strength and wholeness. A large portion of back pain is a direct result of poor movement patterns.

Healt h Re vo lt BACK PAIN: AN ESCAPABLE EPIDEMIC BY KATE MURPHY IT’S NO SECRET THAT CHRONIC BACK PAIN is a gargantuan medical matter—especially for the masses it plagues. Roughly 85 percent of Americans will experience a bout of chronic back pain during their lifetime. Back pain is the number one complaint of musculoskeletal pain, the second most common reason for a doctor’s visit (second to colds and flu), and is the leading cause of work-related absence in the U.S. And all these visits aren’t cheap. Currently, Americans fork over approximately $100 billion each year for back pain. And yet, researchers from the University of Washington found that the dramatic rise in expenditures for the diagnosis and treatment of back and neck problems has not led to expected improvements in patient health. Instead, estimated medical costs and the prevalence of back pain continue to increase simultaneously. We

“Foundation Training is unlike anything I have tried before. It is similar in many ways to yoga but also very different. Foundation Training has helped me reconnect with muscle groups that have long been dormant and absent from their intended function. It has truly changed the way I think about my body and how I move in everyday life. It has become part of my everyday routine, and I have become much stronger and have more flexibility than I can remember ever having. I am now pursuing activities I had given up on years ago. I really believed there was no hope for my back and the pain I had dealt with for years. I now have a different perspective. It has really changed my life! I am forever grateful!” - Brock

have to ask ourselves, what are we missing? What’s to blame for your back pain? Unfortunately, when we arrive on this planet it’s without a user’s manual. Most of us are not told how to sit, stand, bend or move properly. And our culture is not teaching us well. We live in a technologically advanced, industrial-driven society where most of us spend generous portions of our day sitting. When we’re not sitting, we’re moving in ways that compromise the strength of our bodies. Since we’re often not told how to do it differently, the problems compound.

When sitting for prolonged periods of time, the body begins to shut down, muscles become weaker and dormant, and they no longer help to support the spine. Desk jobs, too much time on computers, texting or standing in undesirable positions all lead to an accelerated breakdown of the spine as muscles atrophy and bones begin to rest on bones. Sitting leads to weak and tight hips that eventually lose their ability to move well. Our bodies are not designed for a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting, far more destructive than most are aware, is now being referred to as “the new smoking.” Not only does prolonged sitting cause

problems, our movement patterns also determine our strength and wholeness. A large portion of back pain is a direct result of poor movement patterns. For example, our single most important movement pattern is hinging at the hips. Imagine how a toddler squats to pick up a toy. The back is practically straight and the hips hinge behind the ankles. As adults we often hinge higher up, bending or hinging with our spines. We have lost the ability, largely, to hinge at our hips, which creates a cascade of issues. The spine has a limited number of bends throughout its lifespan before it begins to

break down. Our backs are like metal coat hangers. They only bend so many times before they become weak and eventually break. Wherever there is movement, especially improper, excessive and repetitive movement (i.e., bending) there is increased mobility. But too much mobility leads to an accelerated breakdown of connective tissue, instability and eventual pain. Why Conventional Treatment For Back Pain Is A Failure Traditional back pain treatment focuses on symptom management. Most treatments start

with rest, ice, heat and Advil, but they quickly accelerate to include muscle relaxers, injections, massage, acupuncture and chiropractics. When those fail to get rid of the pain, the majority considers surgery. Patients who suffer from failed back surgery are showing up in the offices of physicians, surgeons and pain specialists in overwhelming numbers. Sadly, as surgery continues to grow in prevalence, so will the number of failed surgeries. Back pain is no different than any other chronic modern day health issue. If we continue to treat the symptom rather than the cause, a cure will never be found. And chances are that if you’ve

SandpointLivingLocal.com

60

suffered some episode of back pain or endure chronic back pain, it may seem reasonable to “give your back a break” by decreasing physical activity and movement. But that’s exactly the wrong approach. A Modern Day Antidote To Back Pain Rather than ignoring the underlying root of back pain—weak muscles and poor movement patterns—we should address them directly. The best way to get rid of poor movement patterns is to repeat better ones. Foundation Training (FT), created by Dr. Eric Goodman, is a series of corrective exercises designed to strengthen

our “core.” Foundation Training redefines the core as any muscle that connects to our pelvis (hips). Rather than compartmentalizing muscles with isolated exercises like crunches, FT uses combined chains of movement to encourage the core muscles to work together as they are designed to move. FT reminds the body how to bend properly by hinging at the hips and activating the glutes and posterior chain all while protecting the spine. FT also works to bring length to chronically tight muscles in the front of the body and strength and stability to weak muscles on the backside of the body. In his book, “True to Form,” Dr. Goodman describes the purpose of FT: “Foundation Training is a reaction to where our modern times have taken our bodies physically. It’s not that we don’t take care of ourselves, but the postures we’ve gotten used to while sitting in front of the computer and television prevent us from moving the way we’re meant to. Everyone puts his or her body into positions that are extremely challenging, and the body begins to support them. Foundation Training corrects those positions by working in opposition to them.” Physical therapists, trainers and others heavily emphasize core strength to remedy back pain. However, many of the core exercises being prescribed involve repetitive bending of the spine. This accelerates the breakdown of the spine. Core muscles should be strengthened in a way that lengthens the muscles of the core, re-educating them on how to provide proper support to the spine. Hint: if you’ve been doing crunches to strengthen your “core,” chances are you’re adding to the problem.

“I am an avid golfer who developed severe low back pain. Initially, I took the ‘quick fix’ surgical route and had a back operation. Months later I found myself where I started with the same severe back pain. When I was told that I needed another surgery, I knew that wasn’t the answer. I managed my pain with meds and injections over the next few months. I could hardly walk, and sleeping at night was impossible. The pain was terrible and there wasn’t much I was able to do. This is when I found a Foundation Training instructor. After our first session, my pain went from a 9 to a 6. I was blown away! I knew we were onto something. After a few more sessions, the relief was incredible! The pain was disappearing. I have learned to move in a way that keeps my back from hurting and how to strengthen the muscles along my spine. Today, I have NO pain in my legs or back. My flexibility has improved significantly. I never thought I’d be saying this, but I look forward to walking and playing golf next season. I would highly recommend that anybody try this method before any medical procedures. - Jon

“My struggle with back pain had gone on for eight years, but last summer I reached a breaking point. We had just begun to build our new house, and I couldn’t even walk from room to room. When I tried, I would have to sit in a window sill and wait until the pain lessened enough to walk a few more feet. I could barely function. I was a mess. An MRI revealed the extent of the damage in my spine, and it was so much worse than I had expected. I had five bulging discs, lots of degeneration and severe spinal stenosis. My surgeon said I needed a major fusion of five vertebrae. When it looked like I was out of options, my daughter-in-law connected me with a Foundation Training instructor. I began by seeing her three times a week. It only took a few weeks for me to notice significant change. My pain was slowly melting away as I grew stronger! I can now function without pain. I go on trips again, and I can work and move for a whole day without pain. Now, when I walk through our entire brand-new house without stopping, I thank God and my trainer for helping me get to this point without surgery. Foundation Training is a major part of my daily life. I have been given my life back!” - Karin Foundation Training Changed My Life

How do I get started?

And I would know all about those problems. I was a personal trainer for over 10 years before I discovered Foundation Training for myself. I experienced debilitating and chronic pain for years, and even with all of my expertise and with help from doctors, chiropractors and specialists, I found no relief. With Foundation Training, however, I was able to change my story, opt out of the symptom treatment treadmill, and help my body regain strength and freedom from pain.

If you’re new to Foundation Training, I highly recommend booking a session with a certified FT instructor. Foundation Training is unlike anything you’ve done and has a bit of a learning curve. Once you’ve learned the exercises, there are instructional DVDs with daily workouts available online to help facilitate your progress. You can search for an instructor near you here: www.foundationtraining.com. Skype appointments are also available. If you are interested in learning more, you can purchase Dr. Goodman’s first book, “Redefine Your Core, Conquer Back Pain, and Move with Confidence” or his second book, “True to Form.”

Now I can’t imagine my work as a personal trainer without Foundation Training. I became certified just over a year ago. Bicep curls and sixpacks quickly lost their appeal as I witnessed FT’s incredible potential. Now it’s all I do. It blows my mind on a daily basis. Helping others out of pain will never get old!

Shiplap is grooved thin wood boards that fit together precisely to prevent weather from entering a home. You can leave the boards as is, stain them or paint them whatever color you like for a fun wooden accent wall. You can also create your own shiplap look by purchasing plywood from your local home store, tacking it to your current wall and painting over it once completed.

Putting in hardwood floors can be expensive and time consuming. Maintaining original hardwoods also takes work. Tiles with the appearance of wood offer an affordable alternative, are easy to clean and maintain, and are a fraction of the cost to install. Porcelain or ceramic wood pattern tile typically runs about $1.50 to $3 per square foot. Put them in your kitchen, living room or watch your guests do a double take with wood pattern tile in your shower. Once installed, you’ll be enjoying the look of beautifully finished hardwoods with the affordability and ease of care of tile.

Nothing brings your kitchen back to life like some brand new countertops. Granite is as popular as ever, but those wanting something unique are finding plenty of different materials to make their cooking space a statement. Wood butcher blocks give a homey feel and also allow you to slice and dice right on your counters. Concrete can be formed in pretty much any color, and glass can be added for additional shine. A colorful tile backsplash really makes the counters pop! Designers are also utilizing quartz, stainless steel and glass to meet each client’s style.

Try adding a farm sink to your kitchen. Savvy designers are utilizing this concept as a way to replace doors around the house. Accordion doors are easily installed around closets and are perfect for the home office that only needs quiet and privacy on occasion. Those with large patios can do full standing wood and glass doors that fold up, joining indoor and outdoor space together. both areas of Idaho are on the rise as well, however the increases have been in the single digits. “Prices have rebounded from their lows during the downturn that started in 2008, but they are still not quite to the level they were at before the recession” said Eric Skinner, owner and associate broker at Century 21 RiverStone Real Estate in Sandpoint, ID. Skinner emphasized that houses that are priced correctly continue to sell quickly, but there are numerous sellers who continue to believe the seller’s market gives them the leverage to demand premium dollars for an average piece of property. “Every home will sell…if it is priced right,” said Skinner. As proof, Skinner said he sold two homes during December for more than $1 million, including one that sold for over $6 million. The owner/broker added that he has a list of people waiting for

the right home at the right price. Many of the buyers of homes under $400,000 come from people who work at or own small businesses in each community. The higher priced properties are usually purchased by buyers from out of state (often California) who are either looking to return to a simpler lifestyle or as second homes.

“Gig Harbor is a destination where people want to live,” Petersen explained. She indicated that the state did the community a favor by raising tolls on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The increase forced business owners to create job opportunities on the Kitsap County side of the waterway.

Jackie Suarez has the office directly across the hall from Skinner. She said the median price of a home sold in Bonner County last year was just over $258,000. Prices are significantly higher in Coeur d’Alene.

The strong real estate market, she said, has been enhanced by innovative entrepreneurs who have established businesses close to large corporations and major hospitals, with access to vendors that provide the ingredients that are essential to every successful enterprise.

Double digit increase The formula for Realtors is more straight-forward in Gig Harbor, according to Linda Petersen with the West Sound office of Keller Williams. She said the number of homes sold through her office for more than $1 million increased by 17 percent midway through December of 2016 compared to all of 2015.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

“We have a lot of cash buyers who are either moving up or downsizing. They desire the waterfront fishing village that Gig Harbor once was. The difference now is that we have Home Depot, Costco and all the modern conveniences,” said Petersen. Like markets in other desirable communities on the West Coast, the lack

73

of inventory has pushed up the prices of homes in Gig Harbor. The average singlefamily dwelling in Gig Harbor jumped from $415,000 in 2015 to more than $463,000, while the average time on the market has fallen from 72 days to under two months. Month to month, the Keller Williams office has been involved in 30 more home sales during 2016 than the year before. The downside of the market, said Petersen, is that rising prices and uncertainty over interest rates could force first-time buyers to look outside the area to find something they can afford. “In most cases, it takes the income of one—and sometimes two—professional incomes to justify the mortgage on a desirable home in The Harbor,” said Petersen, who has been a real estate professional for more than 33 years. Her recommendation for people interested in buying in Gig Harbor or elsewhere in Kitsap County is to, “Do your homework before visiting an open house.” She advises prospective buyers play the game of “Know Your Financials.” Skinner’s advice for prospective buyers in Idaho has more to do with perceptions than bank accounts. “People come to Idaho often wanting a sprawling home on acreage 15 miles from the

“PRICES HAVE REBOUNDED FROM THEIR LOWS DURING THE DOWNTURN THAT STARTED IN 2008, BUT THEY ARE STILL NOT QUITE TO THE LEVEL THEY WERE AT BEFORE THE RECESSION” closest town,” the broker/owner said with a sly smile. “Once they get out here, they realize that five miles out town is more than enough distance from the conveniences of town.” Skinner said the five stop lights in Sandpoint can be, “Too much of an adjustment for some people.” His experience is that properties in Coeur d’Alene move more quickly. “Coeur d’Alene is a metropolis by comparison. It has 50 stop lights.” Suarez added that higher interest rates have created a rush among buyers to buy vacant land in Idaho for their dream homes. Most of the new owners, she said, plan to build within two to five years. The real estate experts in Gig Harbor and Idaho have similar advice for individuals who are contemplating a move to either area. “There is never a better time than today to begin living your dream,” said Petersen. Skinner was more emphatic. “With a list of people waiting for the right property at the right price, waiting too long can mean you’ll miss out on your vision of paradise.” Dan Aznoff is a freelance writer who was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the toxic waste crisis. Housing Market Trends by colin anderson Sandpoint is small town America that features beautiful surroundings, neighborly feel, endless recreation opportunities and a quality way of life. It’s no wonder that people have been putting down roots here for decades. We spoke with Associate Broker/ Realtor Jackie Suarez of Century 21 Riverstone to see what today’s home buyers are looking for in their dream Sandpoint location.

PRIVACY “Home buyers coming to our area are drawn to the natural beauty and many want to be able to find a home that affords those views and access to bodies of water, trails and paths,” said Suarez. Whether it’s forest land, mountain peaks, Lake Pend Oreille or Schweitzer Mountain Resort, buyers are definitely wanting a view to enjoy as they grill out or sip morning coffee. With large peaks encircling Sandpoint, it’s not hard to find a mountain-view home, however expect prices to rise the closer you get to waterfront locations.

#Trending connectivity Despite being far away from major metropolitan areas, Sandpoint residents definitely want to stay connected with reliable fast Internet. Many work from home, and when the kids are streaming as well, they want enough bandwidth to keep everyone satisfied. This also applies outside of technology. Close proximity to hiking and biking trails or waterways that allow you to take your boat into town is of great importance to many shoppers. The ability to get to town without having to take the car each time is very appealing.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

78

OPEN FLOOR PLAN “Inside the home, open floor plans with ample room for gathering are in demand, finished with timeless materials—wood, stone and metal for example,” said Suarez. Today’s homeowner loves to entertain big groups so having large open rooms for family and friends to mingle is a big selling point. Great rooms also allow parents to keep an eye on young kids while getting dinner ready. Room for guests to stay with them is also high on many lists. Consistent building materials that flow from kitchen to dining room to living room give the home a better feel.

LOW MAINTENANCE Spending every Saturday working on the lawn or home exterior is not the dream of most buyers as they’d rather be out exploring. While acreage is a desire for many, leaving natural grasses in place is more appealing than having to mow and maintain five acres of manicured lawn. The same applies to the home, as fiber cement and the always-popular vinyl sidings require less annual maintenance. New energy efficient heating and cooling units need just a yearly inspection so having an updated HVAC system is a great selling point.

Winter By Fo o t

By Colin Anderson

A

S WE COME SMACK INTO THE MIDDLE of the coldest part of the year, many of us have retreated under cozy blankets, huddled with hands around warm drinks and consuming comfort foods. January through March is mini-hibernation time for thousands across the Northwest. While it might seem logical to stay inside and wait out the cold until spring, being sedentary for too long can lead to weight gain, low motivation and feelings of downright grumpiness. It can be a challenge to get motivated to exercise during the winter months, but a great way to keep in shape and see some amazing outdoor scenery is on snowshoes or on cross country skis. There are countless trails with miles of back country to explore. From flat, easy loops to mountain top hikes featuring stunning views and untouched powder, the options seem limitless. Both are easy to learn, and as you progress, you’ll soon be looking for the latest and greatest gear and far-out trails. Snowshoeing has seemingly been around since humans have lived in frozen environments. People all around the world learned long ago that by spreading out the surface area under their feet, they would not sink nearly as deep into snow drifts, making getting to places easier and a lot less work. Through much of time wood was the primary material available, and snowshoes resembled giant tennis rackets. Today, you’ll find a much more efficient mode of travel with shoes that are typically only 2 to 3 feet in length and built from ultra-light and strong materials often weighing less than 5 pounds each. Crampons along the bottom of the shoe give you added grip in varying terrain and ice, and most people also bring hiking poles for added balance. Just slip your sturdy winter boots into the shoes and you’re ready to go. Cross country skis have also evolved from 7- to 8-foot long solid wood gliders to unbelievably light weight cambered skis that allow you more push with each motion. There are two common forms of cross country skiing. Classic style is used inside a grooved track. Keeping both skis in the track, the skier pushes down and launches himself forward on one ski, then glides until momentum slows and does the same with the other ski. Freestyle or skate skiing requires a little more coordination. Skiers go outside the track to the groomed flat surface and use a skating motion much like you would see on a sheet of ice. This allows the skier to go much faster but takes more time to master.

Where to begin Ideally, you’ll want to begin in the gym on a cardio machine. Going straight from the couch to cross country will really punish the lungs, and you might not be able to go very far. Even those who train year-round will tell you the first day on skis gets their heart rate up quickly. This is also one of the excellent benefits to the sport. Cross country skiing is one of the best full body exercises you can do. As you push with your poles, you are engaging your biceps, triceps and shoulders. When you kick with your legs, you’re utilizing quads, hamstrings, calves and abdominal muscles. Your heart rate accelerates, giving you an excellent aerobic workout, plus your body tends to burn more calories exercising in the cold. With so much activity going on you warm up quickly so even on cold days most skiers wear lightweight caps, gloves, and jackets and you won’t need to bundle in bulky clothing. If you haven’t had the pleasure of snowshoeing or cross country skiing, a good place to start is usually at your nearest ski mountain. Many of our resorts and mountains have separate groomed trails for cross country and snowshoeing. They can also provide rental equipment so you can try before you buy. Check with outdoor stores like REI for lessons and group events, and Nordic Clubs. Equipment can also typically be rented from these retailers. The hiking and biking trails at state parks are often converted into groomed trails during winter as well. Check with your closest park to see if it is accessible during winter months. Seeing your favorite hiking trail in winter often gives you a completely different perspective than during the spring and summer months. Destinations Winthrop, Washington: Few people know that the largest groomed Nordic ski trail system in the country is right in our backyard. The Methow Valley surrounding Winthrop has 120 miles of continually groomed trails. The interconnected trail system is surrounded by more than a million acres of forestland which offers incredible scenery as you glide around the trails. Local naturalists also provide scheduled scenic snowshoe hikes at a variety of distances. Guests learn about the surroundings while taking in some truly awe inspiring views. This is also one of the best places for dog lovers as 35 miles of the trails are open to dogs. If you have a mutt that loves to run, consider skijoring. Place a harness around your dog and one around

Food & Drink Recipe

SUNCHOKES: JERUSALEM ARTICHOKES THEY ARE PART OF THE sunflower family and are an edible tuber, which grows underground similar to that of a potato. The taste has been described as having somewhat of a nutty flavor. It is moderately high in calories with about 73 calories per 100 grams—also similar to a potato. The root, however, has little fat and zero cholesterol. It is a great source of fiber and is notably high in oligofructose inulin; a soluble non-starch polysaccharide. According to Livestrong.com, “inulin acts as a prebiotic, providing a source of food for beneficial probiotic organisms in your body. Probiotics may help improve your immune function, produce vitamins, lower your cholesterol and prevent disease-causing bacteria from multiplying. Consuming prebiotics may be an easier way to increase the probiotic organisms in your

body than taking probiotic supplements, because you don’t have to worry about them surviving the digestive process like you would with probiotics.” And in addition to containing vitamins C, A and E, the sunchoke also is high in iron. How does one prepare a sunchoke? Wash the tubers in cold water with a gentle scrub. The peel is safe to eat, however most people use a vegetable peeler to remove it. The cut ends, because of its high iron content, may turn brown quickly after being exposed to air so soak them in a bowl of lemon eater.

Known as the world’s most popular herb, parsley is often used as a table garnish. But did you know that in addition to delicious and vibrant taste, it also has healing properties? The herb’s volatile oils have been known to inhibit the formation of tumors, especially in the lungs. Known as an excellent source of vitamin C, parsley also functions as an antioxidant. So next time, don’t just think of it as a pretty decoration on your plate, make it part of the meal!

A versatile food, the tubers of sunchokes can be used in many ways, including being eaten raw in salads or one can boil, mash, roast or sautee them. Take care not to overcook them as they will soften up quickly.

Arts & Entertainment LOCAL EVENTS & HAPPENINGS

AN EVENING WITH VIGGO MORTENSEN By Patty Hutchens

ON JANUARY 13 AND 14 at Sandpoint’s historic Panida Theater, enjoy an evening with acclaimed actor Viggo Mortensen. This special event will include a viewing of the recently released movie “Captain Fantastic,” starring Mortensen. There will also be an introduction and a question and answer session with Mortensen who stars in the movie that is set in Washington State. The actor is perhaps best known for his role in “The Lord of the Rings” and began his acting career in the 1985 film “Witness,” which starred Harrison Ford. Mortensen has appeared in more than 30 films and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2008 as best performance by an actor in a leading role for his work in “Eastern Promises.” He has been the recipient of many awards for his work as an actor, but his talent runs much deeper; Mortensen is also an accomplished poet, photographer and painter. If you have never visited the historic Panida Theater, this is the perfect opportunity to witness firsthand the nearly century-old structure that was built in 1927 as a vaudeville and movie house. It nearly closed in the mid 1980s, but the community came together to fundraise and restore the beautiful downtown treasure. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Panida has received special recognition from the governor of Idaho, the Idaho Commission of the Arts, the Idaho Centennial Commission and the U.S. Department of the Interior. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the Panida and to meet one of the finest actors in the industry and enjoy his latest production.
