IT’S HERE. THE NEW YEAR IS TYPICALLY A TIME FOR REFLECTING UPON THE PAST and looking forward to focus on how we can be a better version of ourselves. Those New Year’s resolutions haunt us for the first couple of months and then are typically soon forgotten by many. But what if you did something different this year for a New Year’s resolution? Typical resolutions include eating healthier, exercising more and making more time for ourselves. What if you instead focused on making the lives of others better? After all, when we spread joy and give of our time and talent to others, we get so much in return. And if you are intrinsically rewarded by acts of kindness, you may just find those other New Year’s resolutions you have made in the past will fall into place. Consider volunteering at a place that is in need, whether it is a soup kitchen, animal shelter or the local food bank. Interacting with and giving to others is sure to bring you happiness.
For an Appointment!
In this month’s issue, there is an article on goal setting through vision boards. This is one way you can set yourself up for success this year. One of those “visions” on your board can be a simple act of donating time, money or talent to your community. Whatever you decide to focus on this year, be sure to make it realistic. Volunteering does not have to be done on a weekly, or even monthly, basis. Make it fun and maybe even involve the kids when appropriate. We at Living Local 360 wish you all a very happy—and successful—New Year!

Minimalism in the New Year BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, SEVEN BEE INTERIORS | FOR SANDPOINT FURNITURE, CARPET ONE AND SELKIRK GLASS AND CABINETS
A
fter the many excesses of the holiday season, January seems like an ideal place to stop and regroup. Although I truly love the colors and vibrancy of the holidays, with decorations and lights and gifts galore, it all becomes too much at the start of a new year. Come January, I want a clean slate. This is especially true of our home, and this year I keep thinking about a trend that many of us have heard of: minimalism. How would it feel to only live with what we truly need?
There are many approaches to minimalism, and I’ve read about nearly all of them—Konmari’s “keep only what brings you joy” method, Bea Johnson’s zero-waste home initiative, even Swedish death cleaning (yes, this is a thing!). I’ve learned about the Japanese practice of wabi sabi, where things are not discarded when they are damaged or broken but instead valued all the more for their imperfection. All of these are wonderful in theory but very hard for most of us to put into practice. It’s so easy to just keep collecting things.
For most of us, this concept seems far-fetched. We have so many belongings and things in our lives that we can’t imagine what it would take to clear it all out in favor of white walls and stark interiors. However, what if we just took some of the concepts of minimalism and applied them to our own lifestyle? For example, what if for every item we brought into our home, one went out? Or we kept only the things we truly love?
This year, however, I’d like to change that cycle. I want to feel more in control of my home and less like the things in it are in control of me. For me, that means using an idea or two from all that I’ve learned on the subject of minimalism. Before I purchase something new, I will consider whether something I already own can perform that function. Before I add to my wardrobe, I will donate an item (or two!) of clothing that I no longer wear. I will commit to going through my home, room by room, and decide which items

Soothing, isn't it?
There are many approaches to minimalism... I love and use and which ones I only keep out of habit or because I spent “good” money on them. What’s more, I will ask my husband and kids to do the same. Though I’m sure it will seem overwhelming at first, there are some benefits to implementing some aspects of minimalism into our daily life. I’m hoping to spend less, for one. After all, if I only purchase what I truly need, I’m sure to save some cash! In addition, I’m hoping that if we whittle down our belongings to what we absolutely must have, those things will be easier to find when we need them! And, if these ideas can help make our family more environmentally sound by not producing so much trash in the process, then it’s a win-win. As I go forward with this experiment, I will try to remember the words of the godfather of modern interior design, William Morris: “Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Good words for all of us to live by, I think. Happy New Year!

You may want to work with a financial professional to select the appropriate investments for your short-term goals. But, in general, you’ll need these investments to provide you with the following attributes: • Protection of principal – As mentioned above, when you own stocks, you have no assurance that your principal will be preserved; there’s no agency, no government office, guaranteeing that you won’t lose money. TEACHER OF THE MONTH BY PATTY HUTCHENS
T
here are many things that bring a teacher joy, but for Title 1 Kootenai Elementary teacher, Trish Butler, the most fulfilling for her is when a student has that “ah-ha” moment. “When they finally put the pieces of the puzzle together so to speak, and shout, ‘I get it!’ That to me is the best feeling and gives me purpose and joy,” said Trish. This is Trish’s first year teaching Title 1. For the prior three years, she taught first grade at Kootenai Elementary, and for 14 year prior to that she was a special education instructor at Farmin Stidwell Elementary. Trish shares that working with special education students or those who find certain challenges when it comes to learning can be especially rewarding. She recalls an instance from a few years back that warms her heart. “Most of us don’t and can’t understand what it’s like to have a learning disability,” said Trish, adding that when something cannot be explained to a young struggling student, it often gets in the way of that student being able to learn how to read. “A few years back, I had such a student. He was so intelligent! He was creative and talented in so many ways. We worked hard on reading for two or three years. I lost track of
T rish Butle r him over time but thought of him often. One day, I look down the hall and I see this tall kid— really a young man—walking toward me. It’s him! In his hands was a sculpture he welded of a student sitting and reading. He gave me that statue and thanked me for helping him with reading and told me he was off to college!” Trish said it made her so proud to know that she was a part of his puzzle. “I carry that with me in my heart and carry it forward as I work with other students.” Trish said she feels her job as a teacher is not only to teach academics but to help raise good citizens who are contributing members of the community. With that being said, she adds that some of the most important lessons she wants to instill in her students are the simplest, yet the most difficult. For example, she shares that she wants students to truly know how to listen to those around them and really “hear” what others are trying to say. In doing so, Trish believes a lot of problems can be avoided. She strives to have students think beyond themselves and know that everyone has some sort of struggle in life, whether it be in academics or at home. “It’s OK to give each other a helping hand. The underlying thread through all of that is perseverance. We all just can’t give up at the first sign of trouble,” said Trish. “We’ve got to stick with things—whether it be learning to read, learning a new sport or learning how to navigate an elementary-school friendship. Life is not always easy! Teaching or instilling that in students is hard. I want students to be able to fight through those hard spots without giving up. In doing so, they will be able to move mountains.”

Bringing a New Dog Home?
Know what age, breed and size is best
BY STEPHANIE VICHINSKY, OWNER AND HEAD TRAINER OF UNITED K9
M
any people contact me every week asking what kind of dog they should adopt or purchase, and many people who already have dogs contact me wishing they had made a better choice for their family or lifestyle.
It's important to shed light on the pros and cons of certain dogs in certain lifestyles, and it's important to be aware of what role training can and cannot play. While we should definitely consider things like breed, age and size, we should always evaluate dogs as individuals. I've seen incredibly mellow, sweet and young pit bulls and incredibly wild, aggressive and old golden retrievers. While there is a fair amount of documented traits for each specific breed, individual dogs can range all over the spectrum. One of the first things I encourage people to consider, regardless of breed or age, is energy level. Many problem behaviors arise from too little mental and physical stimulation. If you are a very busy individual or a quiet home body, a high-energy dog might not be the best for you. You will have more success with a low-energy dog that enjoys time around the house with the occasional adventure. If you are a total go-getter, have a very active lifestyle, are a dog enthusiast interested in dog competitions, hunter, fisherman or

traveler, and you want a dog to join in all of it with you, a medium- to high-energy dog is probably a good fit. Another important thing to consider is size. Will the dog do better in a house or an apartment? Does it need 10 acres? Will it fit in your car if you need to take it to the vet? Can you physically control it if the situation calls for it? It's easy to forget that young dogs can become big very quickly. Always make considerations on the size the dog will be when it is fully grown. Another important factor is temperament. Some dogs are happy-golucky, some are couch potatoes, some are fearful, some are aggressive, some are intense. Do your best to get to know these traits prior to adopting or purchasing. Research the training required for each particular temperament, weigh the pros and cons and decide if the dog is one you are comfortable bringing home. Last but not least, we should consider the breed. Different breeds were designed to do different things. Some have high prey drive (they like to chase other animals), some have herding drives and some have little to no drives at all. Some are independent and some are very social. Research potential breeds thoroughly. With all of this being said, I want to emphasize that puppies of any

breed are a lot of work. Owning, training and caring for a puppy is time consuming and requires a great deal of dedication. Puppies, regardless of size, are going to chew, dig, bite, cry and have potty accidents. There is no way around it. Training can help soften the blow, but the puppy still has to go through its puppy phase. Study their needs and have patience. If we do things right, puppies grow up to be awesome lifelong companions.

Over a decade

11th annual Heart Ball set for February 16
F
or more than a decade, Bonner General Health Foundation has hosted the Heart Ball, an amazing event that has raised $691,991 to benefit our community by providing exceptional equipment and services to better serve the health needs of those in our area. Erin Binnall, community development manager for Bonner General Health and Foundation, said that the money that has been raised over the years has helped purchase new ultrasound machines, equipment to provide more diversified imaging options for radiology, a remodel for the obstetrics department and much more. This year the event will take place on February 16 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. The funds raised are earmarked for the expansion
of BGH’s outpatient services, in particular the opening of an Ear, Nose and Throat clinic on February 1, which will be located in the Pinegrove Medical Building next to the hospital. “All funds raised will assist with the startup of that service,” said Binnall, adding that the community members should not have to leave Sandpoint to have most ENT surgical procedures. “We feel strongly that our catchment area of approximately 60,000 people will support a full-time physician clinic.”
“The BGH Foundation was formed to generate the financial support necessary to provide exceptional health services and support initiatives that help to improve access to medical care; offer educational programs on health topics impacting our community; equip individuals and groups with needed resources and tools to become stronger advocates for good health and medical care; and address health care disparities,” said Binnall. “Overall, the foundation plays an integral part in support of providing services that improve quality of life and health for our community and region.”
Bonner General Health is a not-for-profit health system with the mission to serve the community by providing excellent health care close to home, and the foundation has done much over the years to support that mission.
This year's event is not currently sold out; however, tickets are selling fast! Tickets are $150 for an individual or $250 for a couple. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Erin Binnall at 208.265.3390.

UNCOVERING LOCAL TALENT LIFE CHOICES PREGNANCY CENTER CHRISTINE DENOVA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BY RON DENOVA } (TWITTER) @RONALDDENOVA
THE VALUE OF RELATIONSHIP
Executive director, wife, mother, woman of God … that’s Christine Denova.
I
LUNMW is an abbreviated quote of “I Love You No Matter What” that Life Choices Pregnancy Center’s (LCPC) Executive Director Christine Denova lives by. “It symbolizes how Jesus loves us and is what we want to convey to our clients.” Her heart matches her magnetic personality, gifted to come alongside the broken, no hesitation in praying with you; by far the most beautiful woman I have ever met and continue to be her biggest fan. Christine, a certified minister from Global University and former outreach ministry leader of Cedar Hills Church, oversees a caring staff of five that works alongside a volunteer base that exceeds 40! LCPC is an outreach ministry/extension of the church. They offer men and women facing situations surrounding unplanned pregnancy hope, help and healing—loving them NMW along the way; “Letting them know they are not alone and that they are loved ‘No Matter What’ they choose.” The LCPC team comes alongside clients educating them on the three distinct choices when facing pregnancy: parenting, adoption and termination. They start by giving the client medical grade pregnancy tests that are traditionally followed up by a limited obstetrical ultrasound. Here’s what you may not know: the center offers life-skill, parenting and relationship classes with an advocate/coach during the process. Parents can earn baby supplies for attending class (“earn while you learn”). New this year, the center now has sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment for the three most common STDs
in the area for both the client and their partners. LCPC collaborates with local middle and high schools educating students on healthy choices and relationships. Additionally, the center is now offering a class for youth on the damages of pornography. One of Christine’s heart-felt passions is the post-abortive healing arm of the ministry that helps people overcome the shame and brokenness experienced from the termination of past pregnancy. OK, ready for this? These services—yes all— are absolutely free for their clients! Funding comes exclusively from supporting churches, individuals and businesses, as no state or federal funds are received. Christine unwinds by being a “homebody” who likes to read, cook, watch movies and spend time with family and friends. She recently created a haven called the Jesus Room where she spends time with God, always interested in what He has to say. Married 25 years to yours truly and mom of Cal, Christine has resided in Sandpoint for over 12 years, originally coming from Chicago. rust. Relationships. Dependability. These are all principles upon which Jamie Emmer has based his business since it first opened in May of 1990. As owner of Lumber Marketing Services, Emmer is a wood specialty wholesale and retail international distributor. He works closely with builders, contractors and retail lumberyards offering mill-direct lumber sales, wholesale lumber sales, smaller specialty custom orders and custom millwork and framing packages. Emmer moved here in 1982 and was attracted by the beauty, the opportunity for outdoor recreation and the friendliness of the people. He and his wife have been blessed to raise their four daughters in North Idaho and are grateful for the opportunity to also work in such a beautiful place. “God has provided me with this opportunity and the gifts to pursue it,” he said of his business success. Emmer shares that one of the things he enjoys most about his work at Lumber Marketing Services are the relationships he builds with his customers. “(Those relationships) bring great satisfaction and meaning to my daily responsibilities as a business owner,” he said gratefully. “Helping people achieve their dream home is a privilege and an honor I don’t take lightly.”
SandpointLivingLocal.com
At Lumber Marketing Services, Emmer provides a full line of specialty lumber products including siding, decking, paneling, flooring and timbers in a variety of natural species that include cedar, pine and Douglas fir. Lumber Marketing Services also provides imported hardwoods such as Brazilian hardwoods, exotic hardwoods and softwoods. Lumber Marketing Services has established a reputation for providing not only high-quality product but also competitive pricing. They have vendors throughout the world including Central America, South America, Indonesia, Europe and British Columbia. Being environmentally conscious is nothing new to Emmer; it is something that has always been at the forefront of all he does. “As an environmental physics major in college in the ‘70s, before environment was a household word, I have been able to bring a better sense of stewardship and sustainability into an industry that at times has lost touch with how we are all connected by the responsible use and development of renewable resources locally and around the world,” shared Emmer. “Our largest customer five years ago was located in Beirut, Lebanon.”

Since 1910, Emmer’s family has worked in the wholesale lumber service, and he has personal experience in lumber remanufacturing, mill sales, office lumber brokering, ownership of a tree farm, ownership of a retail yard and wholesale distribution. He got his start in 1972 unloading railcars by hand in St. Paul. This wide range of experience is one reason he has been able to provide exceptional knowledge, service, product and pricing throughout the years. In 1990 he went out on his own with $200 in checking, no savings and four little girls. He and his wife were building a home but living in a 400-square-foot cabin without indoor plumbing. A gravity feed spring to an outdoor tub and outhouses was how they lived for many of their formative years. “My girls are the toughest, pretty girls you will ever meet!” boasts Emmer. Sought after for his extensive knowledge and experience, one of his current projects is a three-year, multi-million-dollar clear cedar rebuild of a seaside resort in Hawaii that was struck by the last tsunami. Also on the table is a past president’s exterior cedar remodel on the Islands. With a generous heart and an appreciation of his community, Emmer has given much of his time and talent back to the place he calls home. For over 15 years he has been involved in Cedar Hills Church as a trustee, elder and care

pastor. He also began a volunteer project 14 years ago at a school for at-risk teenage girls near Heron, Montana. Emmer has served on the board at the Hope Christian Counseling Center for 15 years and has served on the Schweitzer Chapel board and the Filling Station board in Clark Fork. And his generosity does not stop there. A percentage of the profits from Lumber Marketing Services also go toward relief organizations both locally and internationally. And if you think Emmer has any intention of slowing down, think again. At 63, he was recently featured in an interview in the Wall Street Journal for his unusual level of fitness, with several WSJ photo shoot pictures of him riding his studded snow bike at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. A few months later, he won the four-week Starlight Ski Race Series for the fastest adjusted male Alpine skier, leaving 100-plus 21 and older male Alpine racers in the dust. Food bank has many partners when it comes to fighting hunger

Bonner Community Food Bank serves approximately 800 families (1,700 individuals) each month
I
t has been nearly three years since Debbie Love took over as the executive director of the Bonner Community Food Bank, and in that time, she has witnessed firsthand how the needs of the community have continued to grow. “We have families who are employed but continue to struggle to make ends meet,” said Debbie. “Also, since expanding our Priest River site, we have seen an increase in need with our older population who live on fixed incomes, averaging $750 to $800 per month.” The good news is that Bonner Community Food Bank has been distributing an increasing amount of fresh produce over the last few years. This past year alone they have given out more than 100,000 pounds of produce. Debbie said this is made possible in large part due to the generosity of the Sandpoint Farmers Market, Sandpoint Community Garden, St. Catherine’s in Priest River, The Grocery Rescue Program, local growers and various community gardens. “We are also fortunate to have raised garden beds on site at the food bank for the last two seasons. I remember sitting in a meeting with Michelle Murphy (who was starting with Bonner County Coalition of Health at the time and had grant funding for community gardens), and she asked me what my vision was for the food bank. I was unaware of her connection to our

local school gardens and told her I would love to see a community garden here at the food bank.” They immediately went to work, and by May of 2017 there were five raised beds on site, something for which Debbie and her staff are extremely grateful. “I thank the Bonner County Coalition of Health and Michelle for being the impetus behind the project. We received funding through the Cadeau Foundation in assisting us in expanding and maintaining the garden, and now we have a dedicated volunteer, Roz Holland, who is the garden lead, along with clients and volunteer students from Lake Pend Oreille High School,” said Debbie. She is pleased that the garden has taken on a life of its own and continues to maintain its momentum. “We currently have nine raised beds and harvested nearly 300 pounds of a variety of produce—kale, green beans, snow peas, carrots, herbs, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli and more.” Bonner Community Food Bank serves approximately 800 families (1,700 individuals) each month, with anywhere from 25 to 40 new families applying for services each month. “There are many reasons why people need the food

This year they provided eight families with gifts for mom, dad and the children within the household—along with providing gifts to three older clients who need a little extra love during this time of year. “They need to know we are thinking about them, and they are not alone,” said Debbie.
There were 80 volunteers to help prepare for this day of giving, including volunteers from the Selkirk Fire Department, Sandpoint Police Department, Columbia Bank in Sandpoint, Horizon Credit Union, Boys and Girl Scouts, Panhandle Animal Shelter, Quest Aircraft, Litehouse, Lake Pend Oreille High School, Clark Fork High School, individuals and their families from the local community, and many more. There are many other ways in which the community helped make this a more joyful Christmas for those in need this holiday season. One such way is how the local grocery stores had pre-made bags of needed items that customers could purchase and the grocery stores delivered to the food bank. “It’s a convenient way for those that want to give but are unsure of what food items to purchase,” said Debbie.
bank. It could be because they are employed seasonally, loss of a loved one, an injury, divorce or an illness,” said Debbie. Year round the food bank is busy providing food resources to the community, and the holiday season can be especially active with so many families in need and all of the other programs the food bank provides. “During the holidays we do see an increase in giving and families needing assistance,” said Debbie. The Food Bank participates in Coats 4 Kids and continues to distribute coats throughout January. They also assist families in receiving Christmas gifts through individual sponsors. This year they provided eight families with gifts for mom, dad and the children within the household—along with providing gifts to three older clients who need a little extra love during this time of year. “They need to know we are thinking about them, and they are not alone,” said Debbie. The community is especially generous with donations of resources and time. In November, the food bank coordinates their largest event of the year distributing a turkey and some of the fixings that complete a Thanksgiving dinner to families. This year, thanks to the generous community and a donation from Washington Trust Bank, they were able to purchase 700 turkeys. “In addition, we received 300 turkeys from the donations of Columbia Bank branches in Ponderay and Priest River and from generous individual donors and local businesses,” said Debbie.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
They also have a Grocery Rescue Program which is an alliance among 2nd Harvest Food Bank and local grocery stores whereby those entities donate food to the food bank that is nearing its expiration date but is still safe to eat, eliminating waste and still providing a variety of fresh foods, especially during the low-giving months of January through July. While the holidays are filled with food drives and other significant donations, the fact is the food bank is in high demand throughout the year. “When the holidays are over and people are back into the daily grind, our donations are considerably down. We continue to need canned soups, canned protein items such as chicken, tuna fish, pasta, pasta sauces, canned vegetables, canned fruit, peanut butter, jelly, canned beans (chili, kidney, black, etc.). Other needs include nonfood items as well, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, soap, toilet paper, paper towels, socks, hats and gloves,” shared Debbie. As we enter 2019, it is important to remember that the food bank has an ongoing need. And when you give to the food bank, what you may not realize is you are helping many other local organizations as well. “We have a food share program where we give to local food programs. We partner with organizations such as the Sandpoint Area Seniors, Kinderhaven, soup kitchens, Sandpoint Teen Center and the Forrest Bird Charter School to assist in our hunger relief efforts,” said Debbie. hat began over a shared cup of coffee has become an instrumental part of hundreds of young musicians’ lives over the past decade. Co-founded by Karin Wedemeyer, a German-born opera singer, and Ruth Klinginsmith, a violinist trained through the Toronto Conservatory, these two women launched a music hub unlike any in North Idaho. The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint opened its doors to musician hopefuls in September of 2009 and over the past decade has fulfilled its mission
by expanding opportunities for arts accessibility, teaching music with a consistent curriculum 365 days a year and successfully training aspiring young performers. “Our vision is to become a leading school of performing arts in the Northwest, the ‘Julliard of the Wild West,’ we like to kid. But we are not kidding,” says Kathi Samuels, Board of Directors chair. Kathi’s first interaction with MCS involved her interest to teach her son, who was 6 years old at the time, how to read music. She enrolled him in a group recorder class in 2010. “The environment of music was a draw for me as a parent, a place where my kids could be immersed in ‘the

language of music,’” she says. “After one visit, it was obviously a place I wanted to visit again.” Over the years, Kathi has been part of the accreditation committee, events and ultimately decided to join the Board because she believes that “music makes a difference in the lives of children, especially in the formidable years.” At its inception, MCS offered mostly private classes and group instruction but over time has expanded to include accredited coursework, instrument departments and recently added a more comprehensive children’s theater and the young classical singer to round out their classical repertoire.

Today, any budding musician, from preschool to adult, can learn music from the Conservatory in a variety of ways. They offer El Sistema afterschool classes, which include a full-instrument youth orchestra, to private instruction, to summer camps. Private instruction is available in piano, guitar, voice, strings, percussion and more. Younger children can enjoy Little Mozarts mommy-and-me classes. And for those students interested in pursuing a degree or career in the performing arts, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint offers Honors Track. “We’re cross-cultural as well, hosting international conductors and exchange students for master classes and as part of our
summer international youth orchestra,” says Kathi. “We want to connect students to music in as many ways possible. This spring one of our instructors will return to Sandpoint with a degree and certification in music therapy, opening up a brand new avenue for participation.” The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is addressing the needs of youth and aspiring performers in the community with the desire to become a model for other rural cities across the country. Not many rural towns have an accredited Conservatory downtown. “We trust in the transformative power of music and creativity,” says Kathi. “We believe in our training ability.”

MCS achieved accreditation in 2013 from Western Association of Schools and Colleges. And this spring they will host their six-year site visit as part of accreditation protocol. For those families needing assistance, MCS provides scholarships to include tuition assistance (when economic challenges would otherwise limit participation), merit scholarships (for younger students who demonstrate dedication and particular talent on an instrument) and honors track (for high achieving students desiring to make music their career or educational path). I know they genuinely care about student progress and success. MCS would not be the same without them,” Kathi affirms.
“The study of music and singing means everything to me. Music gives me a sense of belonging and overall way to express myself. I appreciate the impact it has on other people as well and couldn’t imagine not singing. It’s such an amazing reality that the study of music and music overall was developed and is available. I really wish I had discovered it could be a part of my life sooner, but glad I am here now.” 17-year-old MCS Honors Student
In 2018, thanks to support from the Equinox Foundation, the Conservatory was able to hire John Fitzgerald as their music director. With credentials including a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree of arts in teaching from Westminster Choir College of Rider University, John teaches voice and piano, conducts the El Sistema Youth Orchestra and oversees the Honors Track. “He has the ability to transpose music and adjust orchestra pieces to make sure that it’s at the right level for the player,” states Kathi. “Not only is John an excellent instructor, but he is also an accomplished vocalist. He will perform as part of our Bel Canto Opera Company on March 23 at the Panida. I wouldn’t miss it!”
the community and new corporate sponsors Ting, Walmart, Litehouse, Sandpoint Rotary and Kochava, who are supporting the Honors Track students. “We would not exist if it were not for the generosity of the Sandpoint community,” states Kathi. “We are grateful for our many grant, foundation, corporate and private partners, who have supported MCS for nearly 10 years!” The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is made up of 20 instructors who have rich educational backgrounds, degrees and performance experience in a wide variety of genres. And the dedication of the staff and instructors can be seen on a daily basis. “I often observe [them] teaching beyond their regularly scheduled lesson times; just those few extra minutes to make sure our students are getting their notes just right. I watch them lug chairs and music stands to performances on evenings and weekends. They move drums, stages and oddly shaped instruments to rehearsals and back again. All because

The Conservatory currently has 244 private and repertoire students enrolled, plus another 120 taking part in MCS’s outreach and after-school El Sistema programs (a partnership with LPOSD at Farmin and Kootenai elementary and the Priest River Lamanna High School). “With the number of students coming through our doors, we know that we are contributing to the vitality of downtown, and more importantly, to the greater arts community in Northern Idaho,” says Kathi. The Music Conservatory of Sandpoint is located at 110 Main Street in Downtown Sandpoint. If you are interested in learning more about their programs, call 208.265.4444, email mcs@sandpointconservatory.org or visit SandpointConservatory.org. If you would like to show your support, they invite you to attend one of their concerts or donate online by clicking ‘About’ and selecting ‘Friends of the Conservatory.’ “It is never too early, or too late, to start,” says Karin, executive director. “Music can—and should—be a lifelong passion.”

or junior Maddie Morgan, sports have always been an integral part of her life. Over the years, she has participated in football, swimming and volleyball, but as she grew older she found her real passions were basketball and track. She has been on the Sandpoint High School varsity basketball team and ran track since her freshman year.
“I will continue to work hard throughout my last two years of high school, which will hopefully open up doors for me to play a sport at the collegiate level,” said Maddie. She adds that because academics are a priority, at times it is a challenge to balance honor classes with sports. But she keeps in mind that by exceling academically she will open up doors to schools that will allow her to play sports.
“My freshman year I placed fifth at state for the long jump, and my sophomore year I placed sixth in the triple jump while breaking the school record (34’9.5”),” said Maddie, who also plays on a traveling basketball team. In both her freshman and sophomore years, Maddie received the Scholastic Student Award for track and basketball maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
The competition that comes with basketball, trying to constantly outwork her opponent, and the individuality of track are the things that Maddie said she enjoys most about the sports she participates in.
Maddie still has time to decide on what her post-high school plans are but said she is looking at schools in the Pacific Northwest as well as Colorado.

“I want to make a difference and leave my mark on the world.” Wrestling has taught Casey many things, the most significant of which is that your body can go so much further and last so much longer than we all think. “But when put into those situations where we are pushed, our minds hold us back. That's why motivation is so huge. With the right motivation and training, anyone can push past their mind's boundary and achieve their own greatness.”
“For the past three years of high school wrestling I've choked in the blood rounds at state (the round right before placing) and most of that came from not being in the right mindset,” said Casey. “Over the summer I went to a J Robinson Camp. This camp pushed me physically to the point where I became more mentally strong, and I feel this year will be different.” Casey said he plans to attend college and major in business and communications, and if an opportunity to wrestle in college should come his way, he would love to do that as well. “I don't know what I want to do career wise, but I want do something important,” said Casey.

Who would have anticipated way back in 1927 when the Panida first opened that nearly a century later the iconic theater would continue its mission of showcasing great performers and performances for audiences in the Panhandle of Idaho—hence, its name the Panida. But the past century has not been all glory for this historic structure. In the mid-1980s, the theater had fallen into disrepair. But thanks to the generosity of people and businesses in the community, the fundraising efforts put forth by many resulted in the restoration of the Panida, which today is on the National Register of Historic Places and has received numerous accolades from the governor of Idaho, the Idaho Commission of the Arts, the Idaho Centennial Commission and the U.S. Depart of the Interior. In 2015 the theater underwent a ceiling restoration which required closure of the historic landmark during several weeks over the summer.

But when all was complete, a new fire alarm and sprinkler system was installed, and with the restoration of the plaster ceiling this beautiful landmark was closer to all the repairs and code requirements needed to carry on business as usual, which delighted locals and tourists alike. A community-owned theater, the Friends of the Panida provide great support to this Sandpoint icon. The group assists with various tasks including fundraising and volunteering at events with everything from tickets sales, concessions and ushering. With a capacity of 500 people, the acoustics in the Panida make it a wonderful place to not only enjoy performances, but the performers

“It is worth the price of admission to marvel at the beautiful ceiling! The theatre is completely re-done as close to original as possible. Go for the theatre and enjoy the ever-changing lineup of concerts, movies and plays. There is something every month for everyone. The popcorn is homemade!” - Alan B., Calgary, Canada “The Panida Theater is home to many different events—theater, dance, music and more—in the lovely small Sandpoint, Idaho, community. Right in the middle of downtown, it hosts amazing events—local film festival, a foreign film series and local Arts Council series, world-class performers, theater (both local and professional), local school choir and dance concerts, and more. The beautiful theater was destined for demolition and the city purchased it, renovated it to its early 20th-century glory and is a pleasure just to visit, even if you are not attending a concert or show! The community is proud of its treasure and many locals volunteer to take tickets, work the concession stand and hand out programs. A Sandpoint must-see!” - Visitor from Ecuador

oneness of the theatre experience with everyone who ever stood on that stage. Theatrically speaking, it is holy ground.”
“Believe me, you haven't lived until you've sold out the Panida with your musical! Every seat filled—it's the experience of a lifetime,” said Teresa. “You don't really ‘put on a play’ at the Panida; instead, the Panida bestows upon you the honor of bringing your play to life on its historic stage.”
At rehearsals, Teresa said she has looked out from that stage at hundreds of empty seats and felt the daunting thrill of anticipation. “I've looked out before a performance and seen every seat filled and experienced that unique form of ecstatic terror only a waiting audience can give. And when you drive up to the theatre and see the name of your very own play on the marquee, the happiness fills you up like heaven.”
Teresa shares that to stand on the stage at the Panida is a profoundly moving experience. “The cavernous size of it, the ornate beauty, the weight of history giving substance to the very atmosphere, the sheer glamorous ‘gorgeousness’ of it all! You can just stand there, and you can still barely take it in. It's an honor. It is awesome,” she said. “It is a pinnacle experience for a playwright, director, producer or actor to stand on that stage. At that moment, it isn't the acoustics or the lights that get to your soul; it is the

Kathy Chambers has lived in Sandpoint for 28 years and is still moved when she walks into the historic theater. “I love the history of the building. Every time I enter the front doors, I feel transported in time. You can't help but think of all the people in the past that came to enjoy themselves in this time capsule of a theater, almost like their spirits are still present,” she said.

Kathy is not only a resident of Sandpoint but is also a very active member of the community. She currently serves as president of Kinderhaven, the local emergency shelter and group home for abused and neglected children. How to Achieve Long-Term Success Advocating for breaks in your new routine
By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS, Owner, CrossFit Sandpoint IT’S JANUARY, YOU’RE MORE THAN LIKELY A FEW WEEKS INTO A NEW DIET OR EXERCISE PLAN. If nothing else, hopefully you’re at least taking the opportunity to seize the New Year as a fresh start for personal growth.
Two main reasons: one mental and one physical.
If you’re approaching this correctly, you’re probably feeling great, thinking to yourself “I could do this forever! Why would I ever stop? I have more energy, I look better, perform better, have a better disposition and feel like the life habits I’ve adjusted aren’t all that tough to maintain.”
The mental reason is that we like consistent work and subsequent rest. We like routine. We’ve been conditioning for this type of life since kindergarten. Go to work or school during the week, rest on the weekends. Even if you don’t subscribe to that “normal” schedule, you probably have something like that built in to your life. Very few people “sort of ” work seven days a week 365 days a year at a pace that allows them to get up every day and do the things they need to do. It just doesn’t work.
So, when are you going to take a break?
Your diet and exercise plan should follow the same plan.
You may be wondering why in the world I’d be asking you about taking a break when I just listed all of the positives and benefits from what you’re now accomplishing. Why would you think about stopping something that’s working so well?
Working for a period of time and resting for a period of time allows you to get back to work when it’s time. It also allows you to plan for and practice getting back into healthy habits after things like the holidays, vacations and other less-controlled events.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SUNLIGHT With the limited amount of daylight we get in the winter months, it is easy to fall victim to Seasonal Affective Disorder. By keeping active, getting outside and eating healthy, one can lessen the chance of letting the dark days affect their mood and overall well being.

Instead, too many people follow the path of “I can and will do this forever!” and eventually burn out and stop all together. Don’t do that. Take a break in the name of long term success. The physical reason for taking a break is that your body likes being where it is, whether that’s its state of composition or its level of activity. There’s a reason most people are the same size and shape for most of their lives, and there’s a reason that most people end up back at a very similar weight as before they started once they stop their new routines. Your habits, hormones and genetics are all set up to keep you as you are. Don’t take this as a “resistance is futile” position. You can— and will—make tremendous changes if you approach them right and have the right attitude, but you should know that there are reasons it isn’t just overnight success for everyone. This is especially true in the diet landscape. Calories in versus calories out is the vast majority of the reason your diet will or won’t succeed. This generally means eating less than you were before and moving more than you
were before. Only, as I said before, your body likes being where it is. We’ve adapted to survive. By lowering the amount of calories you eat for an extended period of time, you are sending a message to your body that “we’re in a prolonged period of famine; we need to conserve energy.” Your body takes that message and starts to slow everything down. This drastically affects your “calories out” expenditure. By taking a break, you send the message that everything is all good. We’ve got nourishment and we can stoke up the fire of bodily function again. The longer you remain at that new weight, leveling out the amount of “in” calories, the more adjusted your body is to its new amounts of intake, levels of activity and composition and the more it’ll be happy there. Then, when you’re ready mentally and physiologically, you can start up again, continuing on your weight-loss path. So, this January, February or March, take a break in your new routine. The duration will depend on you and your needs, but make a plan to take some time off and get right back on. It will pay off long term, and this will be the year you make the big changes you’re hoping to make!

MEDICAL-GRADE VS. OVER-THECOUNTER SKIN CARE
What’s the difference? BY KRISTIN CARLSON, MEDICAL ESTHETICIAN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC
I
get this question often: “What is the difference between the products you use here at the spa and the ones I can buy at the store?” It is a valid question and one with many answers. As a costconscious consumer, I myself want to ensure I am getting the best-quality products and goods without the unnecessary expense and want the same for my clients. So, let’s break down the difference between medical-grade and store-bought or “over-the-counter” skin-care products. FDA: Medical grade (also known as pharmaceutical grade) is regulated by The Food and Drug Administration. This means that all products require extensive research and testing before they can be sold to you, the consumer. The ingredients and the strength of the ingredients listed on the packaging must be accurate, and the ingredients must do what they say they are going to do. For example, if you are purchasing a retinol cream (vitamin A) from your dermatologist for the purpose of lightening sun damage and easing fine lines, the product must be proven to treat these conditions before it is cleared by the FDA. Over-thecounter products, while less expensive, are under no regulations by the FDA. This means no research or testing is required to prove the product works. So, the anti-aging store-bought product with vitamin A may or may not actually give you results. Skin Anatomy: The stratum corneum is the top layer of the epidermis. It forms a barrier to protect underlying tissue from infection and dehydration, but it also holds on to those pesky dead skin cells, trapping dirt and causing a dull-looking complexion. Over-the-counter products contain molecules too big to penetrate the stratum corneum. Medical-grade products contain

If your regimen is working for you, regardless of where you bought it, then stick to it! However, do your research on the products before you buy or ask a skin-care professional for advice.
Look and feel your best.
SERVICES INCLUDE: smaller molecules and higher percentages of active ingredients, allowing them to penetrate down to the dermis where the real work is done. Marketing: Over-the-counter products rely on heavy marketing for sales. Think celebrities with flawless skin in commercials and magazines, pretty packaging and catchy slogans. Even expensive department-store brands are not necessarily providing you with a topquality, ingredient-rich product. Maybe they are, but there is no governing guideline to prove otherwise. I also guarantee you, behind every fresh-faced mid-40 celebrity on those commercials there is a laser treatment, some injectable or at least a medical-grade skin-care product or two. Medical-grade skin care is only sold under the licensing of a doctor, nurse practitioner or a medically trained aesthetician because of the strength of the products. Your practitioner is trained to address your skin-care concerns with the products most suited for you. They are not sold in stores because self-diagnosing your own skin conditions and treating them with the wrong active ingredients could be damaging to your skin. If your regimen is working for you, regardless of where you bought it, then stick to it! However, do your research on the products before you buy or ask a skin-care professional for advice. Skin-care products are not created equal.

RNs provide prompt medical attention to those needing immediate care on the mountain. Housed in the ski patrol room in the lower level of the Lakeview Lodge, the First Aid Station is staffed by BGH Registered Nurses Patrick Stanford, Molly Stanley, Lori Porter and John Wilson, all of whom are certified in Advanced Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. We are looking forward to an even better 2018/2019 season.” “The patient care goes smoothly from one entity to another, as we all work well together and want what is best for our patients and guests,” said Cook. The 2017/2018 ski season was a record breaker at Schweitzer with 430 inches of snow in the village; the mountain opened a week early in November, stayed open an extra week in April, and 250,000 guests hit the slopes. Approximately 550 patients were treated at the First Aid Station with conditions ranging from colds and sore throats to more traumatic injuries requiring intensive care at other facilities.
Bonner General Health first opened the First Aid Station the winter of 2012. It is open while the ski lifts are running, including holidays and during night skiing. Bonner General Health covers all operating costs, and care is provided at no charge. “We value the partnership that we have with Schweitzer Mountain Resort and look forward to another successful ski season,“ said Bonner General Health CEO Sheryl Rickard.
“Having an RN in the aid room adds an unexpected level of service which helps with patient and family anxiety when faced with what can be a traumatic experience,” said Tom Chasse, Schweitzer Mountain Resort CEO. “All of our patrollers are Outdoor Emergency Care certified; they really appreciate the collaboration with the RNs and the extended level of care the RNs provide to the more acutely injured guests.”
The team from BGH met with Rob Batchelder, Schweitzer Mountain Resort operations director; Arlene Cook, Schweitzer Mountain Resort patrol director; Greg Gibson, assistant patrol director; Angie Nylund, patroller; David Ramsey, Bonner County EMS captain and Schweitzer Fire Department; Spencer Newton, fire chief of Schweitzer Fire Department and Ambulance; and Veronica Mitchell-Jones from Life Flight Network to plan for the 2018/2019 season. BGH works closely with these partners to ensure patients receive necessary medical attention as quickly as possible. xercise is simply a modern invention attempting to offset the negative consequences by not living the way we should. It seems as the post-modern technological era ushers itself into every aspect of our lives, the human race suffers the consequences of living less and less than as we are designed. The more we dishonor our design, the greater the chaos and destruction the human race can ultimately expect. Physical training has long been woven into the fabric of the human race and is a signature of a strong and vibrant people. Training was primarily instituted for military or athletic competition. Yet, for many people, their physical culture were key requisites for daily living and thus woven into every single aspect of a person’s life. Nowadays, physical discipline is relegated to a 60-minute “have to” three times per week, rather than a cultivated daily physical practice that nurtures the most fibrous potential of a person. The fulfillment of one’s greatest life potential must be decided mentally, fueled spiritually and materialized physically. This unspoken truth of the universe, to become your best self you must do so physically, is what floods gyms with worthless resolutions worldwide every January. We know that to truly change we must forge ourselves at the physical level. Exercise is the most powerful drug on the market. Its power to alter brain function and chemistry, alter DNA expression and bend the bar of fate into a life forged from will is no placebo. Physical discipline is a vaccination against mediocrity. However, like any powerful drug, using the correct prescription and

dosage is vital for superior biological outcomes. Yet, many of us haphazardly take any kind of exercise at any sort of dose and expect it to work for us— ignoring the most basic scientific tenets how to prescribe exercise to yield favorable outcomes. Instead of testing and evaluating what should be done and how much, we rely on simplistic emotional drivers created in the vain volcanic sludge of our hubris. Resulting in training our bodies according to what our ego wants instead of what our bodies need, and that, with no clear roadmap of how to actually get to our destination without being derailed, or lost. As our understanding of how the human body works, heals and is optimized to experience the greatest levels of potential becomes more intelligent so should our decision-making process. Yet sadly, many people go into the gym driven by pride to go strength train their strengths with little concern of how to strength train their weaknesses. After all, the gym is where you show everyone how strong you are, right? (Insert facepalm here.) You cannot become strong by working around weakness. The whole idea of training is to become better by resolving physical limitations and teach the body to store and utilize energy well, not punish it to soreness and exhaustion for a rush of dopamine. In order to become what you’ve never been, you must do what you’ve never done in a way you’ve never done it. Too many people show up to the gym in January to repeat the insanity of doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results. True change takes time, persistence and an intelligent prescription.

Be Proactive and Reduce the Risks A LIFESTYLE APPROACH TO AVOIDING ALZHEIMER’S
T
he conventional approach to treating Alzheimer’s currently offers inadequate and unsustainable results. It focuses on symptom relief while mostly failing to address factors that give rise to this destructive disease. Let’s get one fact straight—Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. Yes, the majority of individuals are over 65, yet still 200,000 Americans under 65 are diagnosed every year with early onset Alzheimer’s. It is better to think of Alzheimer’s as being caused by a combination of environmental and lifestyle factors that affect the brain slowly over time. Most of us can notice some slowed thinking and occasional problems with remembering things. This is not the same as Alzheimer’s. Serious memory loss and other major changes in the way our mind works would be a clearer sign that our brain cells are failing. There are many factors to consider as underlying contributors to Alzheimer’s. These just do not originate in the brain either. Even the gut is being recognized as important territory for brain health. Many different paths, regardless of terrain, can lead to expressions of Alzheimer’s.
BY SCOTT PORTER, CENTER FOR FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION AT SANDPOINT SUPER DRUG
It is estimated that up to 45 million currently living Americans will develop Alzheimer’s within their lifetime. Very small changes in the brain begin to occur long before symptoms of Alzheimer’s appear. It takes decades to develop and worsen. More than 150 genetic variations have been associated with Alzheimer’s. But this does not make it a genetic disorder. There are many factors that turn gene expression on and off. We have a lot of influence on our genetics through lifestyle choices. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s include memory loss, difficulty thinking, problem-solving challenges and issues with language. Memory loss occurs when nerve cells are destroyed and die. Even personality changes and problems carrying out daily activities can arise, like getting lost and not managing self-care. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time and is typically considered irreversible, though there is some debate on this. I personally think when I optimize the health of my entire body I am more likely to handle the insults I receive to my brain cells. This approach could very well lead to not just avoiding this degenerative disease but possibly even reversing many of its symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms can slowly worsen over a number of years. Due to loss of body function, this form of dementia is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, with a life expectancy averaging eight more years after symptoms first occurs. I think it is important to not just address the cognitive failures associated with Alzheimer’s, but also we should all take a more preemptive approach. A nutritious whole-food diet, physical activity, social interactions and keeping your mind stimulated are each important in helping you stay healthy as you age and reduce risks of Alzheimer’s. We should stop assaulting our brains and provide ourselves with the right mix of ingredients our minds need to flourish. This includes avoiding toxins while enhancing detoxification, encouraging appropriate blood flow, reducing chronic inflammation and especially treating nutritional deficiencies.

Immersed in Culture Experiencing a work holiday in New Zealand, family style STORY AND PHOTOS BY JILLIAN VERBY KLAUCKE, MD
I
t was freezing outside. The chill in the air was biting, and the ocean roared as waves crashed on the long, sandy beach. A gentle breeze blew as the sea mist coated our faces. Though it was August, it was mid-winter in New Zealand. And my family and I, including a 5-month-old and a 2-year-old, were about to ditch our warm clothes for swimsuits. And dig in, literally, at Hot Water Beach hot springs. Hot Water Beach is on the East Coast of the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of Aotearoa, also known as New Zealand. The natural hot spring river becomes accessible for a soak two hours either side of low tide, when visitors come armed with a spade or small shovel and dig their own spa pool in the beach sand. The Pacific Ocean provides a scenic backdrop and cold water to temper the heat of the spring, which can reach 147 degrees Fahrenheit. Our family found ourselves in this extraordinary place over a long weekend after moving to New Zealand for a year-long work holiday in 2017. Geothermal activity in New Zealand is responsible for a number of natural hot pools on the island nation, which is located just off the coast of Australia. New Zealand formed when the sunken continent of Zealandia was pushed up from the ocean floor when the IndoAustralian and Pacific plates collided about 25 million years ago. Since then, resultant volcanic and geothermal activity has shaped many of the nation’s geographical features and has caused major and minor eruptions, as well as earthquakes which continue to plague the country. However, the native people, the Maori, have a slightly different take on the creation of the beautiful country. The Maori people descend from Polynesians who settled on the island approximately 700 years ago. As legend has it, Maui, a demigod, hid on his brother’s canoe, or waka, when they left to go fishing. Maui brought along an ancestral fish hook, and when the brothers were far from land, Maui jumped out and began to fish. He got a large fish on, and with the help of his brothers, hauled the fish to the surface. The brothers began to carve out portions of the fish, which created the mountains, valleys, lakes and shoreline of the North Island of New Zealand. The canoe that held Maui and his brothers formed the South Island, and the anchor, Stewart Island. The influence of the Pacific Islands and its nations is prevalent in the North Island, and Auckland, the largest city in NZ, has the largest population of Polynesians than any other city in the world. Maori make up approximately 15 percent of the population, but Te Reo Maori, the Maori language, is one of the national languages of New Zealand, along

with English and NZ Sign Language. Upon arrival to Auckland last year, our small family was greeted with “Kia Ora,” which translates to mean “Hello” or “Be well and healthy.” Our children were delighted to learn “Hongi,” the traditional Maori greeting in which people press their noses together and touch foreheads. My daughter, Greta, was entranced by a performance of a “Haka” at the Auckland museum, a traditional Maori war dance that has evolved into a demonstration of community and strength. If you have ever seen the All Blacks rugby team play, you may have seen the “Ka Mate” haka enacted by the team at the start of the game. At our children’s daycare, they were taught to count and sing in Te Reo Maori. At the library, entire sections were devoted to cultural preservation of the Maori people. As newcomers to New Zealand, we learned to use the Maori language daily. Many place names were Maori, and we often drove along Tamaki drive in Auckland, viewed Rangitoto or Waiheke Islands across the Waitemata harbor, and we lived in the Eastern suburb Kohimarama. We began to pronounce “wh” as a “f ” sound, such as “Whangamata” as “Fang-ga-ma-tah.” Our lexicon was also influenced by commonwealth nations, such as the U.K. and Australia. We have habitually changed our vocabulary and now say nappy, rubbish, jumper (for sweater), petrol, wee and pram despite returning to the U.S. One of my son’s first words was “Ta,” which is a common way to say “Thank you.” As my husband and children and I soaked in the thermal pools at Hot Water Beach, my mind drifted to what the NZ and the Coromandel peninsula may have once been. Though still rural, I imagined the

towering Kauri forests, which are large trees similar in size to the Redwoods of California, filled with large Moa (a now extinct giant flightless bird, larger than the ostrich), and traveled by kiwi birds, who crept under the silver and black ferns. In part of learning about NZ through the eyes of a child, my 3-year-old would often report back to me about flightless birds, the presence of penguins on the South Island and other animal facts after a trip to the library. Many of the species that evolved on the isolated island nation are now extinct, but one may still see Pukekos, a large swamp bird, or hear the beautiful sound of the Tui, which has a call full of complicated notes and tones. Our first month in Auckland, a lovely Tui became our alarm clock at 4:30am and reminded us that we were in a new place. In contrast to the tranquility of natural hot pools, the urban scene in Auckland also took some adaptation. Many of the homes in the city are placed two per lot, with a “front house” and “back house.” Each plot may have room for a small yard or garden (often teeming with tomatoes, silver beet and herbs) or citrus or feijoa trees. The homes were smaller, built for warm weather, and lacked insulation. Without central heat, homes were warmed with a heat pump or heater in each room, to be turned on only when the room was occupied. Economy cars were the standard, and work fleets were made up of vans, rather than pickup trucks, to save on fuel, which could cost up to $3.80 NZ per liter (or about $9.90 USD per gallon). While in Auckland, my husband and I both worked in health care. Jonathan had contracted to complete pediatric and sports orthopedic fellowships, and I planned to work as a general practitioner, or GP, in a clinic in the Mission Bay suburb. The practice in which I worked was staffed at any one time by a practice nurse and three physicians and was just big enough for each one of us to have a combined office/exam room. When a patient arrived for a visit, physicians would room the patient, take all vitals needed and limit each consultation to one health concern or 15 minutes maximum, whichever came first. That may mean that a patient was seen once or twice a week, or booked a longer visit if more time was needed, and it helped that GP practices and the health-care system are subsidized by the NZ government. Patients are not required to have insurance and only pay small fees to see physicians. More complicated health concerns can be addressed in the specialist realm, but

In NZ, 100 percent of all medical care is covered for children under age 13. For anyone in New Zealand, whether permanent resident or visitor, any accident, such as a broken bone or getting the wrong vaccination or an infected bug bite, is covered under the ACC, or Accident Compensation Corporation. As a GP, government-funded services resulted in access to resources needed to solve a difficult problem or make a diagnosis, but I found that New Zealanders in general were self-reliant and realistic about outcomes and utilization of such resources which helps keep funding in place. The socialized system in New Zealand has other programs to help allay medical costs. Children are entitled to free dental care, and there is a national support network of nurses for health and well-being through the Plunket program for all children, with additional education for parents, breastfeeding and lactation counseling, and other social services. My son had all of his well child checkups covered through this program, and our Plunket nurse, Charlotte, was available for office visits and would readily answer texts. As a GP, we worked closely
with the Plunket care team, especially when a discrepancy with growth or development was noted and children were referred to our offices for evaluation. Unlike a typical pediatric practice in the US, where care is centralized, GPs were utilized for sick child visits or immunizations. As a doctor, I would get to see families with common conditions, like colds or strep throats, or help coordinate care for a child with other needs or who required a more specialized approach to their well-being. In the latter case, I used the public specialist system to then refer to a pediatrician. None of this would cost the patient or their family.
a family come in with their 5-month-old baby, who was born in the Netherlands. I was glad we had booked for a half hour (extra-long) visit, because we had to translate their medical and immunization records, which were in Dutch, to determine what the child needed for vaccines and medications. Both New Zealand and the Netherlands utilized the metric system, so there was no need to translate height or weight to kilos or meters, respectively, but it was fascinating to me to interact as an American doctor with Dutch nationals in a New Zealand medical practice. This scenario was not uncommon throughout a day of consultations.
I often had travel consultations during my sessions with patients. Because N.Z. is so close to the Pacific Islands, families would come in to discuss pre-travel vaccinations or return to report tropical illness or other travel medical concerns. Many N.Z. residents are foreign nationals and have connections to their home countries. This made our visits quite interesting, as I would have to translate a prescription from Chinese, or French, or read doctor’s notes from Chile or Argentina (with the help of a translator). Auckland is a very international city, and I had many unforgettable interactions. For example, one morning I had
Many of the families that we met, either professionally, or socially, in New Zealand were pleased with the infrastructure. Aside from medical coverage, public works kept the country tidy and functioning. We potty trained our eldest in NZ, and I was thankful for the ubiquitous, clean public toilets available in every town. On rubbish receptacles, slogans for “Be a Tidy Kiwi” or “Take three” were posted to encourage everyone to pick up extra litter and keep NZ neat. Museums were free for NZ residents, and the library system could obtain any book available in the world on request. Most communities had a post office

that also functioned as a bank, with a national “KiwiSaver” pension program partially funded by the government for retirement. Roads were well maintained, and I got used to navigating rotaries, or roundabouts, while driving on the left side of the road (thus clockwise). We saw few stop signs but rather obeyed “give way” or yield signs that helped keep busy Auckland traffic moving. When we headed to the country, national roadways were two lane only, and, depending on the geography, bridges would condense down to one lane and vehicles forced to stop to wait for others coming in the opposite direction on a major highway. Though it was a bit different than what we are used to (no super highways), the pace was a bit slower, which made sightseeing that much easier. However, in the city, vehicles only had to stop for pedestrians if they were in a designated crosswalk, so walking traffic rarely had the right of way. Our family not only got used to driving on the left side of the road, but we also got used to a change in diet. We learned quickly to shop for seasonal fruits and veggies after our first grocery bill neared $1,000 NZD for a family of four. In the off-season, courgettes (zucchini) could cost $19 NZD/kilo, capsicums (peppers) would be $5 NZD each, and avocados up to $7 NZD each. Berries were only available in the summer, and “pumpkin” (generic for any type of squash) was only available in the fall. Tomatoes were really only affordable if they came from your own garden. These same prices were also reflected at restaurants.
Our kids thrived in our new locale, trying new foods and learning new habits. Our kids thrived in our new locale, trying new foods and learning new habits. One of my favorite memories was of my daughter, who saw live New Zealand green-lipped mussels in the grocery store water tank. The mussel is a traditional Maori staple and is very affordable. While seated in the cart, she asked me, “Mummy, can we get mussels please?” And I, pleased with Greta’s willingness to try new foods, exuberantly packed up a kilo into the shopping “trolley.” When we were at home, after steaming them with lemon and garlic, we sat down to eat. As my husband and I savored the flavor, we didn’t expect our daughter to eat her mussels and then resolutely ask for more, more, more! Greta and her brother adapted easily to the kiwi lifestyle. children in Auckland, and no longer fussed when applying sunscreen, happy to oblige with the Slip! Slop! Slap! Campaign. Due to ozone losses over the country, UV rays from the sun are not filtered as well when they hit NZ, and sunburns and sun cancers result. In fact, according to Melanoma NZ, approximately 13 people are diagnosed with melanoma in situ or melanoma every day in New Zealand. Burn time can be as short 12 minutes in the summer. On Hot Water Beach that afternoon, we were lucky that burn time is a bit longer in the winter, but despite, we lathered up in sunscreen before taking a dip into the pools. As the sea roared over our shoulders and we felt the warm water of the pools, my husband and I looked at each other, nodded and knew that we were fortunate to have the opportunity to call New Zealand home, if only briefly. After 14 months in an amazing country, it’s nice to be home in the U.S, but we also miss the community that we were a part of in Auckland and the stunning beauty around every turn as we traveled in New Zealand. We would love to return, but, as it’s said in Te Reo Maori, “Ma Te Wa” or time will tell (and hope to see you soon). Breathe New Life into
Your Home
Simple changes create a bold new look BY COLIN ANDERSON
R
emodeling a bathroom or kitchen can take weeks and really put a dent in your 2019 budget. Instead of tackling a major renovation, why not utilize a few simple tweaks to give your home a great new look in the new year?
Paint – The easiest and most cost-effective way to change up the look of your home is to add a splash of color to the walls. Variations are endless, and if after six months you aren’t digging the new shade, simply paint back over it again! Quality paint should only take about two coats and will dry overnight. A new color scheme can coincide with new corresponding décor and will help reflect your personality and individuality. Instead of replacing old wood cupboards, paint over them and add new hardware for a fresh look to your kitchen without spending thousands. Fixtures – Adding new fixtures to your hallways, kitchen or bathrooms instantly creates a new feel for your home. With so many models to choose from, you won’t have any trouble finding pieces that fit your style. New LED models will even help you save on lightbulb purchases—and your energy bill. Installation is surprisingly simple. Remember to turn off the breaker to the room and connect the proper wires. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with electrical, gather all the fixtures you would like replaced at once so a professional can tackle them all in a single day.

Clean and Service – Preventative maintenance won’t beautify your home, but it will help keep it cleaner and help you avoid costly repair bills in the long run. Have your air-conditioning system serviced now before the big spring rush. Furnace filters get dirty quickly but are very cheap and easy to replace. Dirt, debris and allergens get stuck in the carpet, so bring in a professional carpet cleaner and/or a company to clean out your air ducts where even more dust, mold and mildew reside. For bettertasting water and cleaner ice, don’t forget to change out the refrigerator filter. A few filters and a couple of deep scrubs will have you breathing easier. Off-Season Purchases – It’s wintertime, but that doesn’t mean you can’t already get into the summer mood. Now is a great time to search for outdoor patio furniture, grills, chairs, lawn decorations and other accessories before prices start to rise in the spring. Gather a few planters and plan out what flowers you’ll want and be ready to go once the weather warms. Speak with a gardener or landscape architect early about any updates to the vegetation around your home. When the first hot sunny days arrive, you’ll already be relaxing outside while others are out shopping and wasting a beautiful day. The Front Door – Whether it’s friends, family or the package delivery driver, make a bold first impression with updates to your front door. Bold colors are on trend, and you need only about a quart to cover a wood door. Update your doorbell from whatever basic boring buzzer came with the house to something that better represents your personality. The same goes for the welcome mat; find one that

reflects the home people are about to walk into. Installing a screen or glass door will come in handy on warm summer days when you want a fresh breeze to help air out the house. Power Wash Exterior – Unfortunately, rain isn’t the best way to wash your home. Over the years all kinds of dust, grime and dirt stick to our exteriors. Hooking up a power washer to your hose and giving your siding and windows a good cleanse will bring new life to your home’s exterior. Clean windows allow for more natural light, something we call crave. Before you begin, know what type of water pressure your siding can withstand and be sure to be delicate around door and window frames. Special cleaners will help prevent quick buildup so you won’t have to make this an annual chore. Floating Shelves – If you never seem to have enough space and are tired of moving around heavy and bulky bookcases and dressers, install a few floating shelves for a modern touch and added space. Purchase shelving in whatever material, length and color you like. You can build your own support system, or there are many models that attach to a wall with no visible supports or hardware. A goal without a plan is just a wish.
your goals are. Then, bring them to life! They can cover anything that is important to you including spirituality, health, career, finances, relationships, travel and more.
Before you start, make sure you have all you need on hand. You can use a cork board, poster board or pin board; just make sure it is something you will want to display so you don’t end up putting it in a closet. Also, you will want to have things like scissors, pins and a glue stick to assemble the board.
Jack Canfield, a motivational speaker and co-author of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series, wrote, “Your brain will work tirelessly to achieve the statements you give your subconscious mind. And when those statements are the affirmations and images of your goals, you are destined to achieve them.”
It’s the New Year, which means we start making all those resolutions that many of us typically never follow through with. When creating your vision board, for both your personal and professional goals, do not focus solely on the material aspect of things But what if you did something different this year? at least a couple of times each day; visualizing, affirming, believing and internalizing your goals. • Be sure to include images that represent your achievements and express gratitude as your dreams begin to become a reality. • Record the day you made your vision board and create a new one each year. • See yourself living in the manner you have portrayed your life on your vision board. • Believe the items on your board are already yours when you look at them. • Express gratitude for the good that is already present in your life, celebrating and acknowledging goals you have achieved. • Never give up! (Note: For more information from Jack Canfield, log onto FreeSuccessStrategies.com.) When creating your vision board, it is recommended that you also pay attention to the process that you go through to do so. Are you spending a great deal of time searching for the ideal photo? That may be an indication that you are a perfectionist, which can sometimes be an obstacle to reaching your goals. Or what if you keep putting off the creation of the board? It may be a sign that you are overwhelmed with your obligations to others and do not carve out enough time for yourself. You may be surprised to learn that vision boards are not just for those to display in their homes. In a 2016 article in Forbes Magazine they reported, “Successful small-business owners say they started their businesses because they had a vision and followed it. And as they pushed forward with their plans it was important for them to keep their eyes on the big picture. • Almost two-thirds of small business owners believe that visualizing goals helps them map and develop their business plans. • One in five small-business owners used a vision board or other visual representation when starting their business; 76 percent of those business owners said that today their business is where they envisioned it would be when they started it. • Eighty-two percent of small-business owners that used a vision board from the get-go reported that they have accomplished more than half the goals they included on that board.” As we usher in 2019, don’t write down your resolutions and simply stick them in a drawer to be discovered later in the year. Instead, take time to thoroughly evaluate both your personal and professional goals. Have fun creating a vision board and instead make that New Year’s resolution to make a new vision board each year. Before you know it, you will be living the life you dreamed of!

How to Succeed in the New Year
Fitness tips to help you on your way - BY JILLIAN CHANDLER -
2019 is here, and with it comes that expected—and at most times dreaded—New Year’s resolution. At the top of many lists is to get healthy, workout more and eat right. Many start off the year in full force, but by the time February and March hit, they’re back to their old bad habits. Make this year different. Let’s make it a success! Here are some simple ways to not only start the year off right but continue all year long.
01. Make your goal attainable
How many of us decide that starting January 1, we are going to do a 180 when it comes to our fitness routine? In many cases, due to our fast-paced lifestyles, work and family, our goal is just not attainable—at least not in the amount of time you plan before you start seeing changes in your physical appearance. Plan to make just one change—one change in your lifestyle to better your health. If you found yourself completely putting off any type of intentional exercise in 2018, for 2019, dedicate 30 to 60 minutes each day to walking, whether on a treadmill, outdoors with your dog, up and down your stairs, etc. Before you know it, you’ll be jogging—then running! And you’ll feel great doing it!
02. Schedule it in
If you set a time aside each day and make it part of your daily routine, it will make it that much easier to follow through and not make excuses. Whether it’s first thing in the morning, on your lunch break or in the evening that works best for your lifestyle, dedicating a set time for yourself will help you accomplish your goal. If you are one who carries around a physical day planner or use the calendar on your phone, schedule in the time as a reminder, and it will make you less likely to schedule an event in its place.

03. Find a support system
Yes, it can be difficult when you’re first starting out on your new and improved fitness journey. If you’re married with a family, have your spouse and kids join in on your endeavor. Throughout the week, choose physical activities you all can partake in. An evening family walk after dinner or weekend bike ride or hike will not only help keep you going in the direction of your goal but will in return create additional family time. You can also look to your friends. Join a workout class together, go grocery shopping and help motivate each other to stay on track.
04. Take control of bad habits
So you’re regularly working out but still find you’re nowhere near your goal of where you expected to be at this point. Have you taken inventory of your refrigerator and pantry? What are you fueling your body with? Diet and exercise really do go hand in hand. If you find yourself watching your favorite show at night and snacking on those not-so-healthy foods that are pre-packaged and full of hidden ingredients you can’t pronounce, take stock of what’s in your pantry and refrigerator and get it out! If it’s not there, you won’t be tempted to eat it. Rather, fill your fridge with healthy, ready to grab and eat fruits and vegetables. Same goes for beverages. Good-bye soda, hello water.
05. Stay motivated
Keep your eye on the prize. Whether it’s fitting into that new bathing suit you purchased for your spring or summer vacation or wanting to complete that upcoming 5k strong, don’t let anything stop you. The important thing is to stay positive, push through any and all obstacles you may encounter, whether physical or mental, and you will ultimately reach your goal. And if that scale is preventing you from keeping a positive mindset, toss it. It’s just a number and not necessarily a reflection of all of your hard work.
06. Don’t give up
So you found yourself skipping the gym to sleep in a few minutes more. Or you had one too many drive-through window meals because you worked late or couldn’t make it to the grocery store. We all have bad days. Everyone. No one is perfect, life happens and sometimes we don’t make the best decisions. That doesn’t mean all you’ve been doing for the past few weeks or months has been done in vain. Get up and keep going. Remember, one bad day does not erase all of your good days. You’ve got this! 2019 is your year.

Vancouver’s North Shore The perfect base to explore all the area has to offer STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND
V
ancouver’s North Shore is located just across Burrard Inlet from the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, making it a convenient base to explore all the area has to offer. Lodging is more reasonably priced on the North Shore, and with access to Vancouver’s public transportation, it is easy to get to wherever you want to go. The Holiday Inn North Vancouver looks like a chateau and is easily accessed from Highway 1 and is family friendly. For this trip, plan a day in Vancouver, a day on the Northshore and a day exploring the Sea to Sky Highway. The North Shore Coastal mountains practically push the town into Burrard Inlet. It is such a contrast to the large city across the inlet and the North Shore with all the outdoor activities and scenery nestled right next to the suburb. Begin your day at the Lonsdale Quay Market. Located right on the water, the market is a mix of shops, an international food court and a farmers market. Every food choice we tried at the food court was excellent and freshly prepared. Make sure to explore the area as well with the shops, breweries and the new Polygon Gallery. The waterfront is interesting, especially with all the shipping activity for the busy port. In the afternoon, head to the must-see attraction on the North Shore—the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. January is a great time to visit because Canyon Lights is still going on through January 27, 2019, and you won’t have all the crowds. With the early winter sunsets, you can do a day and nighttime visit. Explore and hike the park then plan an early dinner at the new Cliffhouse Restaurant and Bar for a West-Coast inspired menu. Afterward, head back out to the park, which now looks totally different with

MY MUST-SEE STOP IS STANLEY PARK. DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER YOU CAN BIKE OR HIKE AROUND THE SCENIC PARK, WHICH IS A POINT SURROUNDED BY WATER ON ALL SIDES. PLAN TO VISIT THE VANCOUVER AQUARIUM LOCATED IN THE PARK.

with your feet dangling as you fly over Canada from east to west. Special effects like wind, mist and scents make you really feel like you are flying.
If you still have any energy left or you can make the time to visit the first night you arrive, head up to Grouse Mountain. Take the gondola up to the top for a winter wonderland. For your first stop, look for a glowing light tunnel. The Light Walk is open throughout the winter and loops around Blue Grouse Lake. You will need snowshoes or snow cleats, which you can rent at the Outpost. Enjoy the outdoor skating rink or some snowshoe fondue, which you can set up with your family of friends. It includes snowshoe rental, headlamps and an experienced guide. After your adventure enjoy cheese, broth and chocolate fondue at the Altitude Bistro.
Located across the street is the Vancouver Visitors’ Center. Stop in for maps and to get information on the city. There are world-class museums, a vibrant Chinatown, parks and much more. The seabus terminal is located with connections to a variety of public transit where you can reach just about anywhere you want to go in the city. My must-see stop is Stanley Park. Depending on the weather you can bike or hike around the scenic park, which is a point surrounded by water on all sides. Plan to visit the Vancouver Aquarium located in the park. The indoor portion of the aquarium has a variety of exhibits and tanks. The Graham Amazon gallery is a unique experience in the winter. You step through the door, the temperature and humidity soar, and you feel like you are walking through a rainforest. Add in an anaconda and other scary creepy crawlies, and the effect is complete. Rain or shine, you can visit the outdoor section of the aquarium and see penguins, seals, sea lions, walruses and otters. Check the schedule for various feedings and shows which highlight the animals. The sea lions are especially engaging and love to “talk” to the visitors.
Vancouver From the Lonsdale Quay you can catch the Seabus to Vancouver. This is a fun low-cost harbor cruise. When you arrive on the Vancouver side, it is just a short walk to Canada Place. This is an iconic Vancouver landmark. Head to the west promenade where you will find the Canada Trail, stroll down the trail and learn about Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories. At the end you will reach North Point, where there are incredible views of the North Shore mountains, the Port of Vancouver, Stanley Park and the Burrard Inlet. Next visit the Port Discovery Centre and learn about Canada’s busiest port and all that entails. The FlyOver Canada Experience is a simulated flight that has you suspended in the air

After breakfast, begin your drive on the Sea to Sky Highway. I think this is one of the most scenic drives in North America—just stunning views even on a rainy day.
top, enjoy the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge—which is not for the feint of heart. There are multiple viewing platforms; some as close as the lodge and others reached by hiking trails. You can do some winter hiking or snowshoeing. Kids will love the tube park.
Your first stop is Britannia Beach to tour the Britannia Mine Museum. This is an outstanding tour! Our guide, Paula, was knowledgeable and fun. After watching a short movie about the history of the mine, you take a tour of the mine riding a train into the mine and learning how the copper was mined. It was very interesting to learn about the conditions miners experienced. The tour also includes a tour of the large mine building where the copper and other minerals were extracted from the ore. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore the sight once your tour is done. There is so much to see! The gold mining was fun because they really go all out with the equipment and warmer water, which is nice in the winter. They also seed the dirt so you really do have the opportunity to find gold or other gemstones. I have to admit, it was pretty exciting to see a flake of gold appear in your pan.
When finished, you can head into Squamish, which has a variety of shops and restaurants. Before you head back to your hotel, make sure to drive a few minutes out of town to the Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park and Eagle Viewing Shelter to view North America’s largest collection of wintering Bald Eagles. From the Eagle Run Dike, you can easily view the Bald Eagles with your bare eyes. They stand out against the bare winter trees. Well worth a quick stop. There are plenty of interpretive panels to learn more about the eagles, and on weekends, volunteers are available to answers questions.
Continue a couple of more miles down the road to the Sea and Sky Gondola. This park offers a ride to the top with breathtaking views of Howe Sound on your way up on the 10-minute gondola ride. Once at the

January is a great month to visit Vancouver’s North Shore and the surrounding area. Off-season allows for a slower pace and less crowds. Insider tips: Many area attractions offer a family rate for two adults and two children. Also note, Tourism Vancouver’s Dine Out Vancouver Festival takes place January 18 through February 3, 2019. A variety of dining experiences are available at all price points and are located in both Vancouver and the North Shore.
