THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY provides us many reasons to celebrate. We are blessed to live in such a great country where we are free to express our religious beliefs and are blessed with an abundance of opportunities, thanks to those in our military and our first responders who put their lives on the line each day. Living in North Idaho, we have even more reason to celebrate. Sandpoint has become known worldwide for its beauty, outdoor opportunities and friendly people. Not only are people traveling here to partake in recreational activities, but we are also attracting people from the business communities as well—people who are eager to share their knowledge and benefit our local economy. On August 7, CNBC contributor, author and president/CIO of NationsShares Scott Nations, will present an overview of his latest book, A History of the United States in Five Crashes, to what is sure to be a full crowd at the Sandpoint Events Center. Hosted by Ron Denova and Trudy Leen of Gateway Financial Partners, registration opens July 1. Nations has served as head trader for Sovereign Capital and as a floor trader at both the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. And in the true spirit of Sandpoint, there is no charge to attend, however, contributions to Kinderhaven, Sandpoint’s group home and emergency shelter that is home to many abused and neglected children from our area, are encouraged and appreciated.

NON TOXIC and a Truly RENEWABLE RESOURCE (no petrolium products) STRUCTURAL (no sagging on hot days) COOL on the feet EASY to work with for a BEAUTIFUL end result (Have you ever seen a wood deck that tried to look like composite plastic?) EXTREME ROT RESISTANCE and durability Higher appraisal VALUE than plastic decking

The Ipe on our deck overlooking our lake in Minnesota is stunning. I got it all from Jamie at Lumber Marketing Services, and the entire lot was excellent. Later, I was going to expand the deck, and bought a small amount locally. The LMS product had a beautiful grain to it, that was far superior to the local product. So, I sent the local product back and got more from Jamie. The service I got from LMS was perfect. They computed precisely the amount I needed and got it delivered exactly when they said they would. Even though they shipped it to Minnesota, the price was excellent. I couldn’t be happier, and love the look and feel of our new deck. John Saunders, Shorewood, MN

Practical Living

ESSENTIALS By Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center

REMODELING YOUR HOME?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

MY PARENTS ARE REMODELING their home, and not having done this before, they needed some guidance with what they should be doing and when. This made me think that most of us in the industry take for granted that you all know what you are supposed to be doing, and apparently that is not always the case! In a perfect world, your contractor would provide you with a list of items that you are responsible for picking out. However, most of them work with various trades and will send you into that store to pick out your materials, so that list is not necessary. They do this because we work with these contractors on a continual basis. This means we know their budgets, we know their expectations in product quality, and we know what they need us to do. For example, when a homeowner is sent in to our showroom, we help them select cabinets, countertops, doors, windows, trim, hardware, flooring materials, shower doors and window coverings. These are all items that require lead times and installation coordination with the builder.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

21

FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU NEED

It makes it pretty easy for you to walk into a showroom, select what you like and then be able to walk out. On the back end of that, we work diligently with your contractor to come up with a design, provide drawings and budgets, the ordering process, receive product and make sure it’s the correct color and wasn’t damaged in shipping. We then coordinate delivery and even installation by our professionals. However, if you need help with this process or don’t have a contractor who utilizes trade services like this, you may need assistance on what you need to be doing. You need to ask specific questions when you are first meeting with a contractor or potential contractor. Ask about timeframe, such as when the contractor could start, how long the anticipated work will take, what you should expect during construction, and then most importantly what decisions you are responsible for making along the way. Make a clear distinction of what you need to be doing versus what your contractor will be doing.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

In most new construction or remodels, you will be responsible for picking out the following: • Cabinetry – species, color, door style • Countertops – stone, quartz, solid surface, laminate • Sinks and faucets – material, style, color • Flooring – tile, vinyl, hardwood, carpet • Tile – showers, flooring, backsplash • Trim profile, species, and color • Interior and exterior doors • Finish colors of hardware for hinges, etc. • Windows – color, operating style, material • Wall texture and paint color • Window coverings – style, fabric, operating systems • Shower doors – glass selection, operating system, frame type • Any glass selections, such as mirrors or decorative cabinet glass • Door and cabinet hardware – finish, material, style • Light fixtures – finish, style The contractor will then coordinate correct sizes, rough-ins and installation of these items, and most offer their opinion when you ask, but ultimately, it’s your house and your decision on the finishes you put in it. If you need help coordinating these finishes, you can hire an interior designer or gather a group of your friends for a second opinion.

FINANCIAL FOCUS DIVERSIFY YOUR INVESTMENTS … BUT CONSOLIDATE YOUR PROVIDERS ARTICLE COURTESY OF EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL YOU HAVE PROBABLY heard that diversification is a key to investment success. So, you might think that if diversifying your investments is a good idea, it might also be wise to diversify your investment providers—after all, aren’t two (or more) heads better than one? Before we look at that issue, let’s consider the first half of the “diversification” question— namely, how does diversifying your investment portfolio help you?

Consider the two broadest categories of investments: stocks and bonds. Stock prices will move up and down in response to many different factors, including good or bad corporate earnings, corporate management issues, political developments and even natural disasters. Bond prices are not immune to these dynamics, but they are usually more strongly driven by changes in interest rates. To illustrate: If your existing bond pays 2 percent interest, and new bonds are being issued at 3 percent, the value of your bond will fall, because no one will pay you full price for it. (Of course, it may not matter to you anyway, especially if you planned to hold your bond until maturity, at which point you can expect to get your full investment back, providing the bond issuer doesn’t default.) Here’s the key point: Stocks and bonds often move in different directions. If you only own U.S. stocks, you could take a big hit during a market downturn, but if you own domestic and international stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit and other types of investments, your portfolio may be better protected against market volatility, and you’ll have more opportunities for positive results. (Keep in mind, though, that even a diversified portfolio can’t prevent all losses or guarantee profits.)

SandpointLivingLocal.com

24

So, it clearly is a good idea to diversify your investment portfolio. Now, let’s move on to diversifying financial service providers. Why shouldn’t you have one IRA here and another one there, or enlist one advisor to help you with some types of investments and a different advisor assisting you with others? Actually, some good reasons exist to consider consolidating all your investment accounts with one provider. For one thing, you’ll keep better track of your assets. Many people do misplace or forget about some of their savings and investments, but this will be far less likely to happen to you if you hold all your accounts in one place. Also, if you have accounts with several different financial service providers, you might be incurring a lot of paperwork—and many fees. You can cut down on clutter and expense by consolidating your accounts. But most important, by placing all your accounts with a single provider, possibly under the supervision of a single financial advisor, you will find it much easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You won’t get conflicting advice and you’ll receive clear guidance on important issues, such as the amounts you can afford to withdraw each year from your retirement accounts once you do retire. Diversification and consolidation – one is good for building an investment portfolio, while the other can help you invest more efficiently and effectively. Put the two concepts together, and make them work for you.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH STEVE SMITH BRINGS JOY AND LAUGHTER TO NORTHSIDE ELEMENTARY BY PATTY HUTCHENS

STEVE SMITH IS PASSIONATE about his job, and that passion has translated into helping to build close relationships with the students he teaches. A second grade elementary school teacher, Smith taught high school for eight years prior to making the move to Northside Elementary where he has taught for the last 14 years. It’s a job he thoroughly enjoys. “Before most of the teachers arrive every day, I am in my room preparing for the day with my small charges [students],” said Smith. “The relationships I make with them is highly important to me because, when a student genuinely feels honored and respected, they will want to be active participants in their own learning.” In addition to teaching, Smith also serves as the advisor of the student council, a group that is made up of officers and two representatives from each of the third through sixth grades. Weekly, the student council meets in Smith’s room over the lunch hour to work on projects to improve Northside Elementary. “Their work is critical to the success of many of our family and community events,” said Smith. “Although they may be young, I see the power of their contributions every year. I freely give them a voice and the ability to make real decisions.” When asked about a life lesson he would like his students to learn, he responded, “Take school seriously, but make sure you are having fun while doing it. And it is that fun that makes Smith’s job so

enjoyable. “Laughter and fun fill my day at school. When I teach, I use humor to help my students; it is my hope they are having so much fun they don’t realize they are learning,” said Smith. He has an open-door policy, and kids frequently stop by in the early morning to talk about everything from science to politics. It is always a bright spot of his day. He makes it a point to greet each student with a smile and a hearty pat on the back. In addition, each and every student earns a nickname, which they use for their entire Northside career. “When they earn their name from Mr. Smith, they actually cherish it, and this speaks to the relationship piece that is critical to his success in the classroom,” said Northside Principal Perky Smith-Hagadone. And yes, fun and laughter fills Mr. Smith’s room every day. His lessons are designed around games, competitions and rowdy Power Point Jeopardy games. A plethora of dogs make up part of Mr. Smith’s family. He uses their photos and names in much of the work he designs. Although he could easily use the district curriculum, he tweaks it. While focusing on the necessary standards, he uses his dogs’ characters to engage the students in a direct and fun way. Clarence, the Great Dane, is an all-time favorite, even though he is no longer with us. Smith-Hagadone said they are blessed to have Steve Smith on their staff at Northside. “We feel so incredibly fortunate to have this professional in our district and at our ‘Little School with the Big Heart,’” she said.

HOT “DAWG” PAWS PROTECTING YOUR PET BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL

C H E C K T H E PAV E M E N T

HOW OFTEN DOES THE AVERAGE HUMAN think about pavement? Asphalt? Unless they are shoeless or work with cement, almost never!

Below are some questions to ponder before continuing your walk: 1. Is your pet limping or refusing to walk? 2. Is your pet licking or chewing the feet? 3. Are the pads darker in color? Any blisters? 4. Are there missing pad pieces on your pet?

Most people are aware that foot pads can be injured by stepping on a sharp object, but what about something hot? Humans almost always have more than a pad between their feet and the pavement. Dogs’ pads just aren’t tough enough to withstand hot cement, metal or tar-coated asphalt which conduct the heat of the sun. Surface temperature and the outdoor temperature are two very different things. When the outside air temperature is 77 degrees, sun-baked asphalt is almost double. If an egg can fry at 131 degrees, imagine how a canine feels as he/she is dragged along to the farmers market! Granted, these surfaces are difficult to avoid in the summer. But just how hot are your doggie’s pads?

The best prevention against an injured pad is to check the pavement with the back of your hand for 10 seconds before your journey. If it is too uncomfortable to leave it in place, you have your answer! Another interesting thing to remember is that when your canine is swimming for awhile, pads soften up and are even more vulnerable to surface damage. After a suspected or obvious burn, it is important to keep the foot area cool and clean. As soon as you notice the problem, flush with cool water and apply a cold compress if available.

Hyperthermia Hyperthermia may be life-threatening and requires immediate treatment. A dog’s normal temperature ranges between 100 to 102 degrees; anything higher than 104.5 is a true emergency. Here’s a fact to consider: On a relatively cool 70-degree day, the temperature within a vehicle may increase by an average of 40 degrees within one hour regardless of outside temperature (Stanford University Medical Center study). Bottom line: We can’t be too careful with our animal (and human!) companions. Symptoms include panting, restlessness, salivating and staggering. As hyperthermia progresses, the gums may look purple or blue tinged. Pets are often very distressed. Severe hyperthermia affects nearly every cell in the body. Organs that are too hot (higher than 105 degrees) can actually become jello-like and literally melt down. Blood in the urine is a life threatening sign.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

LOCAL DOLLARS ASSISTING LOCAL PATIENTS Celebrate Life holds 14th Annual Fun Run/Walk. By Patty Hutchens

IT WAS 14 YEARS AGO when Jenny Meyer’s vision came to fruition. Even after being diagnosed with cancer, the young mother continued to live out the end of her life as she always had—with a passion to make a difference in the lives of those in her community. Celebrate Life Fun Run/Walk held its inaugural event in August 2004, and Jenny was able to see her vision for helping others play out for four years before passing away. “I’m so grateful she was there to see her vision come to life,” said her sister, Julie Walkington, who continues to carry on her sister’s mission. “If only she could see it now. She has helped so many.” To date, more than $250,000 has been raised. Through their annual fun run/walk across the Long Bridge, Celebrate Life raises funds to help those diagnosed with cancer in unique ways. From sending flowers to the spouse of a client who was no longer alive to celebrate an anniversary, to purchasing a video camera for a family to capture every memory of their loved one, the nonprofit has done much to enhance the lives of cancer patients and their families.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

“We help to arrange specific requests, such as delivery of firewood, house cleaning, in-home massages and birthday celebrations,” said Walkington, who adds that they also provide vouchers to their clients for things such as fuel, groceries, medicine, medical equipment and restaurant vouchers. “The list goes on.” Celebrate Life does its best to purchase all their vouchers locally as well. “I feel like we are giving back to our sponsors, so it really goes full circle,” said Walkington, who credits Bonner General Health with much of the success of Celebrate Life. “They have been with us from the beginning, and we couldn’t do it without them.” As Walkington moves forward with the mission her sister began, she does so with passion and gratitude. “We are so fortunate to be so embraced by this community, as it is so generous,” she said. “We are so grateful for all our sponsors, participants and volunteers.” Register at CelebrateLifeFunRunWalk.org or the day of the event beginning at 8am. The fun run/walk begins at 9am on Saturday, August 12, at Dog Beach.

IN 1992, the Sandpoint community was introduced to Natural Fitness Gym by now retired owner Tim Martin. Twenty-five years later—and now with two locations to choose from—Natural Fitness Gym continues to offer its members the best in service, support and amenities to reach your full potential. Current owners Shawn and Kasey Martin are dedicated to serving their members and work tirelessly to ensure that their service and their support meet their members’ needs. “We want members to not feel intimidated walking in the door,” says Shawn. “We are here to help and make them feel a part of something positive.” He adds: “Kasey and I jokingly quote the movie Dodgeball in saying we are Average Joe’s Gym, and we honestly like it that way. When members walk in, they step into our home, and we want them to feel welcomed as such. We take a lot of pride in what we created.” The couple strives to offer the community the best gym around; it’s that simple. Offerings at Natural Fitness Gym include 24-hour access, the largest selection of equipment in the area, cardio, tanning, full-use locker rooms, saunas, Silver&Fit and Tivity Senior Programs, multiple lines of supplement products and, of course, Shawn and Kasey’s smiling faces. In 2015, the pair had the opportunity to purchase Cor24 in Ponderay, and they did, knowing it would benefit their club members to have a second Natural Fitness Gym location to work out. After Shawn and Kasey purchased the business, it was important for them to keep the original feel of the space, making only minor changes to incorporate a bit of “Natural” into the mix. Both gyms maintain their own look and feel. Just recently, they acquired the remaining half of the building, formerly Zandoozles. This was yet another opportunity to add what they felt was lacking from the existing gym. Now the gym offers 5,600 square feet, with a large selection of free weights and 14 pieces of selectorized equipment where weight is selected by setting a pin instead of loading plates. Locker rooms have also been expanded to accommodate the larger space and future members.

The Martins are in this business due to their desire to help people; to help them transform themselves and achieve their goals. Another perk is that they enjoy nurturing personal relationships with their members, noting that they have formed many friendships, most of which are like family to them. When not at work, the couple enjoys spending time at home with their family. In addition, it is important for Shawn and Kasey to not only offer their support to their members but their community as well. “We are very big into helping our local people and businesses,” Shawn says. They help with local auctions and donation drives and have been a longtime sponsor of the Relay for Life. If you’re looking to make a change in your life for the betterment of your health and fitness, Shawn and Kasey are there to lead the way at Natural Fitness Gym.

NORTH IDAHO GROUP BRINGS SMILES AND HOPE TO SWAZILAND

GOOD NEWS

By Patty Hutchens Photos courtesy of Janet Tuinstra

UNTIL 12 YEARS AGO, Sandpoint resident Janet Tuinstra had never heard of Swaziland—a country she and her husband Kal now call home. As part of the Sagle-based nonprofit, The Luke Commission (TLC), they help to make up part of the 150 full-time employees who come from all over the world. Janet and Kal’s son-in-law and daughter, Harry and Echo VanderWal, founded The Luke Commission, named for Dr. Luke in the Bible, in 2005 after they visited the country the previous year. Although much of their operations have shifted overseas, the group’s United States headquarters are located in Sagle, just south of Sandpoint. Harry and Echo serve as the executive directors and have six children. “Kal and I live and serve with the VanderWal family in Swaziland,” said Janet. “Our son Joe and his family of four children, the youngest born here last month, came to Swaziland three years ago. Joe works as assets manager

CHANGING LIVES THE LUKE COMMISSION IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE LEADING MOBILE MEDICAL TEAMS IN SWAZILAND, TRAVELING TO ISOLATED AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA. on Miracle Campus, The Luke Commission’s headquarters, and his wife Amanda is an administrative assistant and supervises The Luke Commission’s dental care.” The Luke Commission is recognized as one of the leading mobile medical teams in Swaziland, traveling to isolated and underserved populations in Southern Africa. It partners with Swazi people and the Ministry of Health to bring free medical care to some of the poorest areas in this country of approximately 1.2 million. Since first forming, The Luke Commission has provided medical services that total over 1.1 million. Just some of the services provided include the testing of blood sugar and blood pressure, sponsored surgeries, test and counsel patients for HIV, screening for TB, taking x-rays, removal of cataracts and much more. Janet is the director of communications but said it’s truly a team on all levels.

“My responsibilities and joys extend into others areas, such as the pharmacy, patient interactions by the hundreds, teaching grandchildren, leading and participating staff development activities, training the younger women, learning from the younger women and more,” said Janet. The nonprofit has approximately 150 volunteers from colleges, universities and medical schools that work with them each year. “Other individuals come to serve, each one paying his or her own way,” said Janet. “We value their contributions.” The international staff of approximately 15 people gives two years or more of their time to the work in Swaziland. However, The Luke Commission’s focus is primarily to employ and teach as many as 150 Swazis at a time to reach their own people with the services offered by The Luke Commission Compassionate Medicine. “Many of these staff members were orphaned

when the country was in the worst of the HIV/AIDS crisis and therefore benefit from training in character, personal and leadership development as well as specific technical tasks,” explained Janet. Swaziland, located in Southern Africa, is the last country in the world to be ruled by an absolute monarchy. “The king is loved by the nation,” said Janet. The once peaceful country was devastated by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and when the Luke Commission first came to help, they never imagined they would impact a whole nation with comprehensive, compassionate care. “In the past decade, partnerships have developed with the Kingdom of Swaziland government, USAID, TOMS Shoes, Christian Blind Mission of Canada, Free Wheelchair Mission, Mobility Worldwide, as well as individuals and churches throughout the United States, Canada and Swaziland,” said Janet. Just last year alone, The Luke Commission offered more than 350,000 free medical services. “Our fleet of vehicles, medical supplies and personnel travel to all parts of the country setting up mobile hospitals in rural schools,” said Janet. “It’s something you have to see to believe.” There are videos on the website LukeCommission.org that will provide a glimpse.

“THE LUKE COMMISSION SEEKS TO BRING A SMILE TO THE FACES OF THOSE OFTEN FORGOTTEN OR OVERLOOKED. THAT’S WHAT I GET TO BE PART OF.”

Their mobile hospitals, referred to as “outreaches,” are a place where Janet finds great joy as she interacts with the people. There, she works in the pharmacy, handing out medications prescribed by the TLC medical team all day long and usually into the night. Janet shares that she has the privilege of giving away medicines—often ones we can buy over the counter in the U.S.—plus antibiotics, intestinal worm pills, blood pressure and diabetes medications to thousands of Swazis who seldom, if ever, see doctors and cannot afford medications. “I have the honor of greeting every patient, many of them orphaned children, seeing in their eyes hope and expectation and, yes, sometimes pain and sickness. But always, it’s a great day when The Luke Commission comes to their rural community, and the atmosphere of help and healing prevails,” said Janet. There are countless stories of hope. Janet shares that recently a man came to the gate at the Miracle Campus and told the guard, “My eye is bad. Something is growing on it. I heard that no one is turned away from The Luke Commission. Could that be so? I cannot find help anywhere.” “Yes, I will call someone to help you,” the guard answered. The man smiled for the first time. “The Luke Commission seeks to bring a smile to the faces of those often forgotten or overlooked. That’s what I get to be part of,” said Janet gratefully, adding that they repeatedly see God’s hand of favor on The Luke Commission. “It’s the why and the how of what we do.” For more information on The Luke Commission, visit their website at LukeCommission.org.

Length in feet of Captain Wes’ boat

THE SOUTH END OF LAKE Pend Oreille is spectacularly beautiful. Sheer cliffs line the shore, and from just about any vantage point on the water you are given a 360-degree view on unparalleled scenery. Because of its remoteness and rugged terrain, very few homes are found along the shoreline. Once you set off from Bayview, it doesn’t take but a few minutes until you feel almost alone on the lake. There are, however, communities in small tucked-away pockets and bays. Some are a handful of homes while others are at most a couple dozen. These include places like Lakeview and Cedar Creek. A run into town for residents here is an all-day journey as they have only narrow dirt roads going to and from their homes, almost all of which are snowed in come winter. Many have come to rely on the generosity of one man and his liquid limo. Captain Wes Jones is the most recent waterway mailman servicing these lakefront communities, something that’s been done for around 100 years. Each morning, he picks up mail that needs delivered and carts it down to his 22-foot Duckworth boat he’s dubbed ‘The Liquid Limo.’ Wes is in his fourth year delivering the mail, but it’s just his second year out on his own. He purchased the boat from

the previous owner and worked out a contract with the mail service. But it’s much more than mail Wes delivers to the homeowners who’ve become friends. As we make the route this day, our first stop is Lakeview, where the mailboxes can be found inside a shed next to the public boat launch. Just a few letters and an Amazon package left here. We head next to Cedar Creek to put a newspaper inside a dock-mounted box and to drop off a letter to another neighbor. He is sporting a large beard and work clothes, pistol on one hip and knife on the other. A fiveminute conversation is held, and it’s on to the next spot. Mrs. Williams has lived in her home since 1952. Wes brings her mail, loaves of bread and a couple of extra treats. “People can put in orders at the ‘Merc’ [a Bayview grocer] and I’ll deliver what they need to them when I’m on the route,” explained Wes. The mail route takes approximately two hours with some extra time to chat. Despite the beautiful open-air office, the route can be a bit lonely, and Captain Wes always enjoys having company on board. This lead Wes to the realization that there are a lot of goods and people that need transportation in the area

and his liquid limo was the perfect boat to do it. This past month, Wes left his job as security at the Bayview Naval Acoustic Research Detachment to focus on his burgeoning business—The Bayview Shuttle. “I thought how many more summers could I wait to start a tour business, and decided I just have to go for it,” said Wes.

drop you at the campsites, and pick you up and take you back to Bayview whichever morning you decide. “If you forget something, I can pick it up at the Merc and run it out to you as well,” said Wes.

Wes recently received his captain’s license, has the insurance and all the other documents in place and is ready for guests. The Liquid Limo can accommodate up to six adults on each trip. The interior is covered so even on rainy days or windy waters you will stay dry. The 90-minute morning trips follow Captain Wes on his mail route, which includes stops in Kilroy Bay, Whiskey Rock Campground, Cedar Creek, Granite Creek, Pine Cove and Lakeview. He also brings guests up close to the famous rock slides where it’s not uncommon to spot a few mountain goats.

Wes is also partnering with owners of the recently opened Gold Creek Lodge. Located just outside of Lakeview, the lodge was once called the Happy Hermit and came with a rather storied reputation as a place to do and act however you want. It closed when a fire destroyed it but was purchased by David McCahill, an avid dirt biker who’s been riding the forest-service trails surrounding the area for years. McCahill, along with friend and manager Bascom Palmer, have created a Mecca in the middle of the Idaho wilderness, and in the short time the lodge has been open, many of the top Endurocross athletes in the world have found their way here and into the hundreds of miles of backcountry trails. The lodge features nine brand new rooms, and the grounds will soon also contain six full-service RV sites and 10 permitted campsites. To keep traffic to a minimum, the Bayview shuttle will take guests to the lodge from Bayview instead of having

The Bayview shuttle also offers pickup/drop-off services to a couple of remote camping areas. Whiskey Rock campground is a popular spot for boaters to stop during the summer. It’s accessible by road but is a long and bumpy ride from Highway 95. For $20 a person, Captain Wes will load up all the camping gear for you,

them take the long windy gravel road in from the highway. Wes is also planning on making the lodge a stop for lunch during daytime cruises or dinner during sunset cruises on the lake. The restaurant was built in 2010 and has a full menu along with beer and wine. Captain Wes has always worked for someone else: the Naval Detachment, security at Las Vegas hotels or putting up to 5,000 miles a week truck driving. He is excited to be taking on the entrepreneurial spirit and creating his own business while sharing the beautiful surroundings he calls home with others. “I’m a little nervous but probably twice as excited to see how things go this summer,” said Wes. Whether it’s a relaxing summer night cruise, Eagle watching in the winter or an overnight stay at a remote campsite or lodge, Captain Wes and his Liquid Limo can get you there safely and with incredible views as a great bonus. For more information or to schedule a trip, call 208.819.0151 or check out the Bayview Shuttle on Facebook.

North Idaho Paradise Waterfront Property Management has something for everyone

W

hether you are a sailor, a fisherman or a wake boarder, Lake Pend Oreille and its waterfront amenities are a place at which you will feel right at home. John Sletager is the vice president at Dover Bay Development, one of three waterfront locations owned by Waterfront Property Management. He points out that each of the company’s three locations is unique, and all offer a family friendly atmosphere for those seeking to live, vacation, recreate or dine in or near Sandpoint. One of the marinas owned by Waterfront Property Management is Holiday Shores. Located in Hope, there is much this beautiful setting has to offer. “There is Chop Steak + Seafood, a café, convenience store and a gas dock,” said Marie Garvey, director of sales and marketing.

Patty Hutchens —

In distinguishing the unique features of each location, Garvey points out that Holiday Shores is one of the favorite areas for sailors given the fact boaters have access to the entire lake without the concern of bridges, which may prohibit access from the Pend Oreille River to the lake. For those seeking to explore Downtown Sandpoint, Waterfront Property Management offers the Sandpoint Marina. From there, boaters can dock and be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, walking paths and the Farmers Market, just to name a few. If you don’t have a boat but would like to explore the country’s fifth-deepest and Idaho’s largest lake, you can rent a boat from Sandpoint Marine and Motorsports at this marina. Soon, construction will begin on Sandpoint Lofts,

which will serve as vacation rentals and will be located in the heart of downtown just steps from the marina. While Hope and Sandpoint marinas are known to many, Dover Bay is one of the better kept secrets in North Idaho and is conveniently located just 3 miles west of Sandpoint off Highway 2. But there is much more to Dover Bay than the scenic views and beautiful marina. There are homes for sale and rental properties available to match everyone’s budget. From beach bungalows located near the fitness center, year-round outdoor pool and hot tub, and Dover Bay Café and Market, to the large upscale homes in 11 distinct neighborhoods, the 285 acres, of which more than one half are preserved as open space, makes one feel as as though they are far away from all the stress of everyday life. For those seeking to take in a walk and enjoy the natural surroundings, there are more Parkside Water Views

than 9 miles of walking trails located on nine acres of park in the Dover Bay Community. Describing the convenience of Dover Bay’s location, Sletager points out that it is accessible by boat and, with the recent addition of 130 slips, can now accommodate 274 boats. While there, enjoy the views from the patio of Dish at Dover Bay, the popular restaurant located at the Dover Bay Marina. Dover Bay has 23,000 feet of waterfront, 9,000 of which is on the Pend Oreille River. The multitude of inlets and calm areas provides a popular place for kayaks, canoes, water

skiers or wake boarders. Whether you are just coming for the day or vacationing for a week, the Market has kayaks, canoes and bikes for rent. The next time you feel the urge to get away, hop in the car, on your bike or in your boat, and take in one of these beautiful waterfront marinas and all the unique features each has to offer. NAMI Far North provides support to mentally ill and their loved ones By Patty Hutchens

ental illness. It can be lonely, isolating and terrifying. And not only for the one suffering from the diagnosis, but also their loved ones. Unlike a broken bone or blocked artery, mental illness is not a cut-anddried diagnosis. And while mental illnesses have been stigmatized for years, the hope among many is that the trend is changing. For residents in North Idaho, the last decade has brought hope and support through NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Far North. While there had been a NAMI chapter in Coeur d’Alene for many years, it was not until February of 2007 when five North Idaho residents came together and formed a local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness providing the hope that many in this rural area have long hoped for. Serving both Bonner and Boundary counties, the group offers support in a variety of ways including a crisis support phone line from 5pm to 8am daily and 24 hours on the weekends.

Coming together with those in similar situations can be very powerful and supportive. The isolation and stigma that can often accompany mental illness melts away. For one local family, NAMI Far North provided the support they needed at an especially frightening time in their lives. Dawn Mehra’s world was turned upside down when her son, Dustin, experienced his first manic/psychotic symptom at the age of 19 and was diagnosed with bipolar schizoaffective disease at the age of 21. With no history of diagnosed mental illness in their family, it came as a shock, especially since Dustin had always displayed exceptional social skills, completed high school with advanced academic and sports accomplishments, and by all accounts was living life as a normal teenager. Dustin’s symptoms began during a time of

stress in his life. He was living far away from home and experienced sleep deprivation for a period of about three to four days. “This was followed by auditory hallucinations, thought interruptions, delusional thoughts, attempting to hurt himself and changes in handwriting,” said Dawn. The symptoms persisted in waves with and without medication over a period extending four to five years, and there were many hospitalizations required depending on the severity. Initially, the family was reluctant to share with others what was happening due to the stigma that sadly continues to surround mental illness. “The general public doesn’t understand that serious mental health illnesses are actual diseases of the brain, often requiring medical and behavioral intervention,” explained Dawn. “The statistics show one in four humans suffer from some form of mental illness throughout their life. Yet, stigma still exists, perhaps due to a combination of factors—lack of education, fear of prejudice, treatment failures and of course the lack of foreclosure from patients who suffer.” One way in which Dawn sought help was through the local chapter of NAMI Far North. There, she received support, compassion, education and even legal help.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

“I attend the support groups and stay connected to NAMI’s political feats,” said Dawn. “The group is growing as more family members climb out of the ‘stigma cloud.’” She and her family learned from NAMI that there is hope for a full recovery and a bright future. She also learned the importance of maintaining a good sense of humor, that it is critical to be patient and to remember it is the journey of the one who suffers from mental illness. Dustin has made a remarkable recovery, which Dawn says she credits to a number of

One of the many programs NAMI Far North offers is a monthly meeting, held the third Wednesday of the month at Bonner General Health. The meetings are educational and provide a support-group component for individuals who suffer from mental illness and also for their loved ones. They also host guest speakers on a variety of topics that relate to mental illness.

things including the love, patience, support and guidance provided by family, finding the appropriate medication for Dustin and the abundance of resources available through NAMI Far North. “And community support. Our friends were amazing,” she said gratefully. Dawn said the journey was difficult and the frustration of not having the knowledge to navigate the mental health system was extremely challenging. Her hope is for a stigma-free future that places community facilities in even the most rural towns in an attempt to bridge the gap of care. Another way that NAMI Far North is making a difference locally is through its work with local law enforcement. In conjunction with Bonner County Sheriff ’s Office, NAMI Far North sponsors the Crisis Intervention Training, a program that assists law enforcement officers with learning how to diffuse a situation when someone with mental illness is a threat to themselves or those around them. Sandpoint Police Chief Corey Coon began sending his officers through the Crisis Intervention Training program when he first took over his role in 2013. “Mental health has become more of a priority in recent years,” said Chief Coon of his decision to send as many officers as possible to the training. One aspect of the 40-hour course involves officers putting on headphones and listening to multiple voices coming at them at once. They are then given a simple task to perform while trying to block out the voices. It gives them a very clear idea of what people with mental illness go through, especially in a crisis situation. Education is also an important component of NAMI Far North’s mission. Studies have shown that when people follow their prescribed therapy and take their proper medication, 70 to 90 percent of those with mental illness improve. In other words, while not curable, it is a disease that is treatable. Dustin and his family are just one example of how support from the community and through the mental health system can help one diagnosed with mental illness live a full and complete life. And if there is one thing

Dawn hopes for, it is that people will educate themselves about mental illness. “Humans’ brains are ever changing. Environmental and genetic factors put us all on a fine line of what we consider ‘normal’ behavior. We as a globe need to accept that the people on either side of the bell curve have a valuable place in society. Removing the stigma from our society will relieve so much suffering and may just end up with more patients receiving the love and care they need to recover,” said Dawn. She encourages people to be patient with their expectations and to remember that the brain takes years to heal. “The sooner you can convince family, friends, your family member to seek treatment, the better the prognosis, as the brain becomes familiar and quickly wires to whatever state it is in the longest,” said Dawn. “And most important, take advantage of a family member’s lucid/clear state—go get a professional psychological evaluation. This is a four- to eight-hour session performed by

SandpointLivingLocal.com

48

a psychologist and often involves two sessions and some testing. Family members are usually brought in to parts of the evaluation.” Whether you or a loved one has been newly diagnosed or have been living with mental illness for a long time, there is hope—and it is right here in our community in the form of NAMI Far North. Pain Management

The benefits of exercise • By Ryanne Lemon, PTA CHRONIC PAIN HAS BECOME an epidemic in America, with approximately 120 million citizens currently taking prescription pain medication and up to 16 percent of prescribed pain medication reported as being misused according to a recent federal study. Although some pain medication may be helpful for acute conditions such as following surgery, prolonged use may not only be ineffective over time but can also contribute to serious negative side effects.

program can be a great way to kick start that change. Research has shown that exercise can be an effective way to reverse this downward cycle of deconditioning and worsening pain and gradually, over time, help those with chronic pain engage more in activities of enjoyment and essential activities of daily living with greater ease.

Although there are many alternative options for managing pain, the best permanent solution is through lifestyle changes. Starting an exercise

movement, and bones can lose density caused by the normal aging process and a sedentary lifestyle. According to Wolff ’s law, bone responds to loads exerted upon it by laying down more bone tissue. In short, exercise builds stronger bones. Exercise also keeps fluid circulating in joints, decreasing stiffness in the joint and joint capsule.

Although there are many alternative options for managing pain, the best permanent solution is through lifestyle changes. chemicals such as endorphins, which work with receptors in the brain to reduce the perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. Serotonin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are other neurochemicals released during exercise. Both are natural mood enhancers which help decrease symptoms of depression. • Exercise improves energy levels and reduces fatigue: Along with releasing feelgood chemicals, exercise improves sleep quality, leading to increased energy and reduced fatigue. Also, as explained below, exercise can help with food cravings and achieving a healthy diet. • Exercise enhances joint and bone health: As we age, joints become stiffer due to less

• Exercise increases overall day-today functionality: It builds strength through building of muscle tissue and by increasing neurological pathways to the brain. When we are sedentary, neuromuscular pathways shut off, causing weakness and balance issues. By exercising the muscle, the neurons will switch on again, which is one reason a person may see very large improvements in strength and balance early on with a new exercise program without necessarily seeing a change in muscle tone. • Exercise helps to control weight (when combined with a healthy diet): Beside the benefit of burning calories and building muscle, exercise triggers the body to release glucagon, which increases your blood glucose levels; the peptide hormone insulin, which regulates the metabolism of fat and carbohydrates in your body; and a hormone called ghrelin, which is secreted in your stomach. A recent study shows that aerobic and resistance exercise suppressed hunger for a short period after physical activity due to the release of ghrelin, which helps to regulate your appetite. When starting a new exercise program, it is wise to have guidance from a skilled professional such as a trainer or physical therapist to: 1. Assess what the problem might be and any muscle imbalances or weakness. 2. Prescribe proper exercises to address these problems. 3. Educate on proper technique to attain desired benefit and avoid injury 4. Monitor for fatigue levels to avoid overworking the muscles and creating a safe environment for the patient or client.

THE NORTH IDAHO “HUNCHED BACK HIKER”

PREVENTION

TAKE CARE OF YOUR POSTURE WHILE ENJOYING A HIKE BY CHRISTINA RUST, DPT

Your Goals Are Our Priority!

DEEP IN THE FORESTS OF North Idaho, there lives a unique creature that usually appears in early spring and wanders along trails until late fall—“The Hunched Back Hiker.” “I often spot this common species meandering along with a full pack upon its back, struggling wearily, painfully in the hot summer sun. I’ve not yet been able to name this poor, strange mammal; would it happen to be you? Hiking is a very popular and healthy activity in Sandpoint during these beautiful summer days. People of all ages are getting out into nature and enjoying the many local adventures that are available. Keep in mind, though, that avid hikers can turn into hunched-back hikers within minutes of placing that pack on their shoulders. The combination of constantly looking down at the trail with a load on the upper back forces the upper trunk forward. This leads to excessive anterior rounding of the upper spine resulting in upper-cross syndrome or “hunched back.” Hunched-back posture, or kyphosis, can result in chronic neck or back discomfort, shoulder pain due to impingement and difficulty breathing because the lungs have less room to expand. Tingling or numbness into the arms and fingers can also be due to compression of the thoracic outlet—the triangle along the sides of your neck between the front and back of the shoulder girdle. In addition, headaches and even dizziness can occur from upper-neck abnormal alignment. There are many ways to prevent this horrible, painful, ugly looking and occasionally irreversible condition. Hiking Poles – Used and adjusted correctly, hiking poles keep the arms up at a 90-degree angle and support both the upper and lower body. They improve balance and allow you the stability to look up and around, instead of

constantly down directly in front of your feet. Hiking poles have also been shown to decrease knee strain by 30 percent.

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

Pack Adjustments – First of all, be sure to invest in a well-fitting pack for your physical size and strength. Then as you hike, make regular small adjustments in the fit of your pack. As you walk and move, the pack and its straps stretch and shift. Most of the load of your pack should feel like it’s on your hips and sacrum, not on your shoulders and upper back. Load Adjustments – It may seem to take extra time, but rearranging the items inside of your pack helps shift the load to the different tiny muscles that run up and down your spine. These small adjustments over time relieve and redistribute constant strain on muscles, tendons and ligaments. Stretching – Yes, stretching does help! Research is 100-percent conclusive on this point. Stop every 10 to 15 minutes and do one minute of light stretching. Then, at the end of your hike, take the time to stretch out all those overused muscles. Repetitive motions and activities lead to myofascial friction. Ongoing friction between the muscles and connective tissues causes inflammation and soreness. Taking time to stretch after activity helps prevent the formation of scar tissue formation in the myofascial layers that results in stiffness and decreased flexibility.

HARD-TO-HEAL WOUNDS IDENTIFYING THE CAUSE AND RECEIVING THE PROPER TREATMENT COURTESY OF BONNER GENERAL HEALTH ST I TIYP HEAL TAHBYI L T

MOST PEOPLE EXPERIENCE a wound at some point in their life. Typically, the healing process is simple and requires basic care. In some instances, wounds can be hard to heal and require prolonged treatment and care. Hard-to-heal wounds can be painful and cause symptoms affecting a patient’s quality of life. A hard-to-heal wound is a wound that fails to heal with standard therapy in an orderly and timely manner; this is applicable to both acute and chronic wounds. The normal healing process has multiple stages, any of which can be interrupted, leaving a wound vulnerable. Many factors can affect the healing process including: patient age, wound size, location of the wound, persistent inflammation that can slow down the healing process, access to proper health care and availability of advanced wound-care products. Hard-to-heal wounds can have a wide range of causes, such as arterial or venous ulcers, complications following surgery, congestive heart failure, diabetes, lymphedema, peripheral vascular disease, traumatic injury and other conditions that can compromise healing.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

56

If a health-care provider assesses a patient’s wound as hard to heal, the patient can be referred to a wound-care specialist for advanced treatment with specialty products. Early identification of a hard-to-heal wound with the use of advanced wound-care products can significantly improve the healing process. At the initial visit, the wound-care specialist will identify what is causing the wound not to heal. They will develop a treatment plan to care for the wound that involves the patient and possibly their family members or caregiver, and they will begin treatment of the wound. Initially, a patient may have scheduled appointments twice a week, and as the healing progresses, appointments may be scheduled once weekly, and then on a monthly basis or as needed. A stable wound environment is necessary before active wound management components can be effective. Advanced wound-care dressings are typically applied to create a moist healing environment to help the wound heal. Types of advanced wound-care dressings include: calcium alginate, collagen, manuka honey gel, hydrocolloids, hydrogels, silicone foam dressings and non-adhesive foam

dressings, which are used for different types of wounds. Jonathan Fisher, DPM, who is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, directs the Wound Care Center at Bonner General Health. It is staffed with nurses and other health-care providers who provide comprehensive, advanced wound-care treatment that improves the quality of life for patients with hard-to-heal wounds. They treat pressure ulcers, arterial and venous ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, minor burns and wounds caused by traumatic injuries, and provide ostomy care and education for colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy patients, and many additional wound-care services.

LOCAL COMMUNITIES SUPPORTING AND ASSISTING OUR HOME HEROES By Zoey Taylor and Jillian Chandler. Photos courtesy of Lisa Turner and Julie Gagnon.

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” - Joseph Campbell Life can change in the blink of an eye; a calm day can quickly turn into dark storm. Heroes arrive in multiple forms to calm the storm. They do not come wearing capes, but a uniform accompanied by lights and sirens. Occasionally they extinguish fires, structural or forest, or they could be giving lifesaving treatment to someone in need. First responders choose to put the lives of their community members before their own. They are the ones who run toward the chaos when everyone else is running away. They are courageous despite fear and the unknown. A hero is one who is admired for their courage. Frequently heroes are known as those dressed in uniforms arriving with lights and sirens, but there are heroes who are dressed in plain clothing. They are the heroes who help the heroes. Keith Boe of North Idaho Life, is one of those everyday people making a difference in the world. This spring, North Idaho Life surprised a local combat veteran marine—who was deploying within days—to his dream. He didn’t ask for much; he wanted to have a memorable day on Priest Lake, Idaho with his family. The members of North Idaho Life not only raised the money for the fishing trip, but exceeded the amount necessary. The excess money went for a dinner for the family at Trinity at City Beach in Sandpoint, Idaho. The family was so moved by the outpouring of generosity, they invited their fishing guide, Rich Lindsey, to join them for their last dinner until

the marine returns from his deployment. Lindsey not only joined them for dinner but is now an honorary member of the family. According to Boe, if the group can do something for someone else in need, a special time together that will create lasting memories, or bless them, then he will not hesitate to pull out all the stops to make it happen. Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the “hero” within us is revealed. - Bob Riley Sometimes the hero is at the right place at the right time. On January 17, 2017, in Bonner County, Marsha Hanna was out walking her horses. She took them up the mountain by her home when gunshots rang out. Living in North Idaho, Hanna assumed that the shots were from target practice. “Looking back, the sounds were different,” stated Hanna. Continuing up the hill, as she rounded a corner, an officer came out of a driveway. At first glance, she could tell something was not right. He looked disheveled and she noticed that his radio was dangling from his side. The injured officer told Hanna to get back, and this is when she became the hero for the heroes. Hanna informed the injured officer of her training, as she was an emergency room nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center. The officer then asked for assistance and Hanna’s instincts took over.

WHAT IT TAKES A hero is one who is admired for their courage. Frequently heroes are known as those dressed in uniforms arriving with lights and sirens, but there are heroes who are dressed in plain clothing. They are the heroes who help the heroes.

Moments later, a patrol car arrived to Hanna’s location with another injured officer. After quickly assessing the situation, she realized that she did not have the required tools to aid them. She instructed the driver to a nearby neighbor’s home, where they could be safely evaluated and wait for emergency medical services. Once at her neighbor’s, her 12-year medical career set into high gear. She quickly realized that one of the officers needed medevacked and had a helicopter called in. She applied pressure to the officers’ wounds; each had three gunshot wounds. The two Bonner County Sheriff deputies were shot while trying to arrest a man with a warrant in Blanchard, Idaho. The first deputy that Hanna met on the road required surgery. After the surgery, the deputy called her and asked her to come meet his family. “They deserve the thank you … not me,” said Hanna.

the car. Kind citizens stood watch next to the car, assuring Mom she would be OK and that her son was doing fine and now safe.

On a Tuesday afternoon this past June, officers responded to a rollover accident on Government Way in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Nothing was unordinary about this call, as traffic accidents are one of the many aspects of the job that police officers are prepared for. But this day was a bit different. When officers arrived at the scene, they were met by a group of bystanders who had stepped in to help those involved in the accident while they were waiting for help to arrive. Ordinary citizens, who could have continued on their way, took action and became the heroes that afternoon.

As if that wasn’t enough, others had taken charge to help prevent any further accidents, controlling and directing traffic while they waited for officers to get there and take over.

One group, which included a nurse, had worked together to help remove a 6-year-old boy from the overturned vehicle. They successfully removed him, assessed him for injuries and comforted and waited with this brave little boy until Dad arrived, as Mom was still trapped in

protection, rescue and emergency services outstanding.” Though Wathen is retiring as fire chief, he will continue to serve the community as a fire commissioner, which is a volunteer position. “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson It is so important to focus on the uplifting stories—that are often underrepresented— of our local heroes amidst the disheartening viral videos of what appears to be officer misconduct. But remember, for every video,

there are hundreds of incidents, not recorded, of our law enforcement helping those in need— from simply assisting an elderly woman with her groceries to holding the hand of someone after being involved in a frightening accident. How many times do firefighters go into a dangerous fire to save those who cannot escape on their own? And then there are our military men and women, who are serving all over the world, leaving their family and friends behind, to ensure the safety and freedom of all. It takes a special person to put the needs of others before themselves each and every minute of every day. They sacrifice for the

good of others, and do so with an open heart and open arms. Heroes are truly humble individuals. They do their job for the love of their job and as a way to give back to their community. We thank you for your strength, dedication and perseverance. Your selflessness inspires us all to be better human beings. The next time you see a police officer, firefighter, EMT or serviceman, thank them. That small gesture goes a long way in relaying your appreciation and validating why they do the work they do, and why they are our heroes.

LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPLORING PROGRAM If you’re interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice, this is for you! By Patty Hutchens

T

rying to decide on a profession that one will devote his or her time to can be an overwhelming experience for young adults. While some may have a clear vision as to what their professional life will look like, others struggle. There are few programs that allow young teens to truly experience what a desired profession would look like on a day-to-day basis—something that would help make the decision easier. While there are job-shadowing opportunities, they may not give an individual a true feel for the job. For those teens and young adults who are considering a career in law enforcement, many cities offer a Law Enforcement Exploring program for young adults ages 14 to 21. The mission of the program is to allow those interested in the field of criminal justice an opportunity to experience firsthand, through training, practical experience and other activities, a view of the criminal justice system.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

66

Law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels sponsor Law Enforcement Explorer Posts. The program is endorsed by organizations including the International Chief of Police Association (IACP) as well as the National Sheriffs Association (NSA). In order to participate in the program, the annual fee is $24. Local Posts may also assess periodic dues or fees to support special activities or events. The advantages gained from going through such a program include the opportunity to build a relationship with law enforcement professionals. Having a true hands-on experience builds awareness of the criminal justice system, thereby allowing a young adult to make a truly informed decision of whether this is the career path he or she wishes to follow. In some cases, the training one receives through the Law Enforcement Exploring program may qualify the trainee for academic credit in his or her educational institution. It in turn can also help those young adults decide on what advanced education opportunities are best to fit his or her field in the criminal justice system. Even if one does not choose to follow a career in

criminal justice, Law Enforcement Exploring allows one to grow personally in areas such as self-discipline and teamwork, resulting in higher standards when it comes to his or her personal and professional lives. In addition, the program also encourages participants to work toward achieving greater physical and mental fitness. Law Enforcement Exploring is also a great way to develop or strengthen one’s leadership abilities and become more involved in the community. Police agencies provide much community service, and by participating in the Law Enforcement Exploring program, young adults can work alongside local law enforcement during various community events, information meetings and much more. Law enforcement offers a variety of possible careers, not just officers. Because of the nature of the job, those who wish to participate in the Law Enforcement Explorer program must complete a successful background check, go through an oral interview, maintain a certain minimum grade point average, be physically fit and must be a person of good conduct and high moral character. There is a participation form to complete and an annual participation fee.

Interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement? These are just some of the Law Enforcement Explorer programs in the Pacific Northwest: The Explorer Program, sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Police Department, provides residents of Kootenai County an opportunity to work directly with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department providing exposure to everything from firearms training, crime-scene processing, medical emergencies, directing traffic and domestic disturbances.

To find out if your community has such a program, contact your local police department. Who knows, the call just may get them thinking about establishing such a program if one does not already exist!

The program focuses on five specific areas: career opportunities, life skills, service to the community, character education and leadership experience. To qualify, the applicant must be between 15 and 21 years of age and be registered as an Explorer with the Boy Scouts of America. In Gig Harbor, Washington, the Explorers Program provides handson experience to those interested in a career in criminal justice. Those interested should be aware that the program does require a significant commitment of one’s time as well as a minimum number of volunteer hours. In addition to the skills that one gains, it also offers the participant an avenue to become an engaging member of the community.

Dedication to...

Community

A career in law enforcement requires sacrifices by entire family By Patty Hutchens Please note, although this story is that of a law enforcement family, the names in this article have been changed to protect their privacy.

W

hen Greg and Sarah were first married, they looked forward to a life full of adventure. High school sweethearts, the couple married while in college. As they moved forward on their life journey, they began to consider what career path would be best for Greg in light of the fact they wanted to start a family. “After we found out we were expecting, he [Greg] got serious about long-term job prospects. His first career was working in powerline construction, which required constant travel. But he had always wanted to see what law enforcement was all about, and it was the perfect time to pursue that,” said Sarah. “What he liked about it was that there was minimal to no travel, he would be working for a county agency, and there was the ability to be home every night—or morning depending on the schedule—with his family.”

SandpointLivingLocal.com

72

... they could not focus on the “what ifs.” While the potential danger the job brings did enter the conversation, the couple balanced that with the fact that there are thousands of law enforcement officers, and they could not focus on the “what ifs.” If Greg wanted to pursue his dream, they would not let the fear of potential harm get in their way. “We talked about the negative backlash that our family might receive from people and families that he would be in contact with through work,” explained Sarah of other considerations. “We also considered whether we would have to be more cautious when in public, especially in a small town where everyone might know what he does for a living.” As it turned out, life in a small town did require a few adjustments to ensure the safety of their family. “We never changed our daily routine, and for the most part we don’t stop what we’re doing or where we’re going just because we might run into someone that he knows through work,” said Sarah. “But there have been small adjustments we’ve had to make, sometimes in the places that we’ve felt safest before, just because of his job.” Their family, which now includes two sons, ages 8 and 5, switched church services and ultimately changed churches to avoid someone Greg had come in contact with through his work as a law enforcement officer. “He [Greg] didn’t want them to be able to associate him with his family,” said Sarah. “There’s room for everyone in church, so we quietly switched services and then churches so he didn’t have to constantly be on the lookout for that.” While long hours were to be expected, Sarah said one aspect of the job that surprised her was the many late nights. A normal shift is 12 hours,

SandpointLivingLocal.com

but if there is an incident or arrest at the end of the shift, law enforcement officers cannot simply turn it over to the next shift. With follow-up reports and paperwork, a 12-hour shift can frequently become a 16- to 18-hour shift. “When you’re dealing with people, every day is a surprise,” said Sarah, who added that she did not expect the passion she now has when it comes to defending law enforcement, especially given the negativity that can be so prevalent with social media. “It’s hard not to take their opinions personally,” said Sarah. “If you’re not careful to stay out of it, that negative publicity from the public can get to you.” Sarah also shared that she was surprised to find that when people discover she is married to a law enforcement officer, they suddenly seem to hold her to a higher standard and assume that she knows everything that happens in her husband’s work life. “People assume that he comes home and tells me everything that happens during his work day, and that’s not true,” said Sarah. “I can’t count the number of times that he’s specifically not told me something because he didn’t want to worry me. We try very hard to leave work at work so that he can be the best dad he can be while he’s at home. That’s the most important thing to us.” With a young family, they have had to make adjustments to ensure the family can celebrate important occasions together. For instance, if Greg works on Christmas morning, the celebration will take place either Christmas Eve or Christmas night.

73

While the kids are old enough to know there is potential danger each time their dad leaves for work, it is not something the family dwells on. “We like to tell the kids about the things that Greg does where he gets to help people—if someone wrecks their car and he is there, or even if he just helps change a flat tire on the side of the road,” said Sarah. “Their favorite time is when Daddy shows up at their school to do a school check and pops in to say hi to the class.” Greg does his best to keep his work separate from family, but the reality is that some of the protocol from his work trickles over to his personal life. Choosing a place at the table in a restaurant where he can face the door is just one of the many things he does. Always vigilant and aware, Greg notices cars, faces and other things that may seem a little “off.” Greg advises that for anyone considering law enforcement, they should first consider the effect it may have on their family. Asking yourself certain questions will help you make your decision easier. “Do you have a family, and is that something important to you? Does the idea of helping the public outweigh your personal safety? Can you deal with the pressure of seeing someone you’ve dealt with at work out in the public after the fact?” said Greg. And as one who is married to a law enforcement officer, Sarah advised to not follow anything one would see on the news or social media related to local law enforcement. “Ignorance is bliss. Trust in your spouse to do the best job they can do in the time they’re given to do it, and focus on your family,” said Sarah. As for Greg’s career, Sarah said she is proud and grateful that people like him continue to work diligently to keep the community safe. “He’s had the opportunity to save lives and get bad people off the streets, but there’s always missed opportunities, and another opportunity on the next shift,” she said.

Public

N A H T U O Y Recognition

The unfortunate reality is that police officers are not receiving the support they once did, but we can do a great deal to change that. Are you involved in a local club or group such as Rotary or the Chamber of Commerce? Invite a local police officer to come speak and answer questions. Also in that public setting, acknowledge some of the great things the police officers or other first responders in the community have done to make the town a better and safer place.

Adopt-a-Cop

Pay it forward

Many communities have Adopt-a-Cop programs. These are designed to match a local individual or family with a local law enforcement officer. The people who have adopted the officer pray for him or her on a daily basis and also encourage the officer with notes of support. Prayer is powerful, and we can all do our part to offer the officers in our community with added protection through this ministry. Since its inception in 1998, the Adopt-a-Cop program has grown and is present in 24 states.

Make it public

We think of social media as being a place to connect with friends and family. But there are many law enforcement agencies that have established their own social media pages to communicate with the public. It’s an effective way to disseminate information on road closures and community events and to provide information about the agency in general. It can also be used as a way for the public to show its support to local law enforcement. Post a note of thanks or support on your local law enforcement’s social media page, and you will soon find that good news really does travel fast!

K N e u l b Make a

special visit

Kids love to visit a fire station or police station. In fact, many have the opportunity to do so during special field trips while in preschool or kindergarten. It’s exciting to see the big trucks and to see a police car up close. A great way for kids to extend their thanks to first responders is to involve the kids in baking treats and hand delivering them to the local fire station or police department. Not only is it fun, but it can also teach kids the importance of showing gratitude. It will also have a profound impact on those who sacrifice so much with such little recognition.

Write thank you notes Writing a simple note thanking those first responders in your community does not take much time and has a significant impact. Involve the entire family, with each choosing a different recipient—police department, sheriff ’s department or fire station. Do you know someone serving in the military? Send them a thank you as well. Acknowledge not only the danger of the profession they have chosen, but also the sacrifice their family makes. Make it a Fourth of July and Thanksgiving tradition or randomly choose a few times during the year to take time to reflect on the blessings these first responders provide.

TRAVEL & LEISURE challenging. Chief Louie’s vision was to change that. And the Band did. In January, Chief Louie was appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his leadership and ingenuity in transforming the Band’s economic future. Nk’mip Cellars: Canada’s First AboriginalOwned Winery One of Nk’mip’s most celebrated accomplishments is its winery, which is run in partnership with wine producer Vincor Canada. Although the onsite vineyard is small (24 acres), the Band’s success in creating award-winning vintages from its 243-acre vineyard on the outskirts of Osoyoos has helped to give Canada’s first Aboriginal-owned winery international acclaim.

CANADA’S LITTLE DESERT OASIS ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY JAN LEE

hen Canadians want to experience arid sunny weather, they head for British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, a 125-long crevasse of shimmering lakes, rolling pasturelands and dramatic vistas. Vineyards drape themselves across gentle hillsides, tucked into imposing mountainsides of forests and sagebrush. Peach, apple and cherry orchards, once the agricultural “fruit basket” of BC, nestle small hillsides with fruit stands at every turn. What was once a formidable “desert” of rattlesnakes, small cacti and unbroken landscapes now serves as Western Canada’s favorite summer getaway. The southern tip of this oasis is home to Canada’s “pocket desert,” a 24-mile strip of dramatic rock faces and gently sloping hills of sparse forests and sagebrush terrain that frames the town of Osoyoos (Oh-soo-yoos). It’s also home to the Southern Okanagan’s most unusual travel destination: Nk’mip Resort. Tucked into the eastern hillsides that overlook Canada’s warmest freshwater lake, the resort was developed by the Osoyoos Indian Band

in the 1990s, and in recent years has become a model example of community ingenuity and spirit. The resort, which is designed to meet the vacation interests of just about every traveler, features luxury accommodations, an award-winning winery, an RV park, an Aboriginal cultural center and a golf course with dramatic views. But it’s also garnered international attention for its success in educating visitors about Native Canadian history through displays, interactive attractions and opportunities to learn about and appreciate the Osoyoos Indian Band’s history and culture. The resort was officially launched in 1998 under the leadership of Chief Clarence Louie, who believed that his community’s economic challenges could be overcome with careful planning and investment. Like many of Canada’s Aboriginal communities, the Osoyoos Indian Band had faced poverty and unemployment for decades. It was also hampered by restrictive federal laws that prohibited Aboriginal communities from mortgaging their own land on reserves, so coming up with ways to create jobs and sustain economic development was

Nk’mip RV Park The Nk’mip RV Park, set on the shores of Lake Osoyoos, has been around for decades, a hidden secret dating back to when Osoyoos was still a small village and RVing in Arizonalike summer weather was an unheard of novelty in Canada. “The RV Park has been around since the 1960s,” said Katrina Baptiste, the RV Park and Campground’s general manager. But it was several decades before the owners realized they had a real gem that was worth expanding. “[The Band] really started to develop [the RV park] back in ‘97,” said Baptiste. One of its additions was a “snowbird-friendly” area for winter RVers there for the colder months, close to clubhouses and a pool.

“There are some people who have been with us for 12 or 13 years—every summer. It’s become their summer vacation,” and those who return each year often bring their families and friends, building a yearly cadre of regular RVers. Today, the park features 389 RV and camping sites, including more than 100 sites near the lakeshore. A snack bar is open in the summer, and a pool and numerous walking trails are available year round. Spirit Ridge For many, it’s Nk’mip’s Southwestern-style luxury accommodations that make the resort a success. Crowning the top of the hillside and overlooking Nk’mip’s vineyards is Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa, a tasteful collection of both short-term and long-term accommodations.

Guests have access to a variety of amenities, including a spa, restaurants, riding stables and an onsite golf course. They also have the option to purchase a residence that offers them the same quiet ambiance and stunning views, yet is set apart from Osoyoos’ busy seasonal attractions. Nk’mip Desert Cultural Centre One of the Band’s goals is to protect the last vestiges of the pocket desert and its delicate ecology. One way it is doing that is by educating visitors about the culture and history of the area. Scientists continue to debate whether Osoyoos is really surrounded by a desert. Some maintain that the area’s 300 millimeters of rain and snow disqualifies that classification. Yet others point

to the area’s desert-friendly wildlife and unique terrain as proof. So researchers now call this arid pocket a shrubsteppe: a name that is less attractive, but more accurate in explaining why Nk’mip’s famous winery, for example, is so successful in carving a niche out of a desert-like environment that isn’t really a desert: it’s dry, hot (90 to 104 F) in the summer and often has the ambiance of Arizona’s or Western Washington’s summerbaked resorts. That dry climate also has helped to define the customs and way of life of the local Aboriginal community. At the Nk’mip Desert Cultural Centre, visitors can learn about the many ways the region’s first residents learned to survive and thrive in the arid Okanagan. They can also learn about the cultural traditions that were passed down, and the huge societal, cultural and educational challenges that residents faced as Canada developed as a nation. Visitors can also pay a visit to Spirit Lake, a sacred spiritual location that is available for viewing from the distance.

Nk’mip and Osoyoos Attractions The town of Osoyoos has its own recreational opportunities as well. Lake Osoyoos, Canada’s warmest freshwater lake, is a favorite destination for boaters, swimmers and fishermen alike. Numerous trails snake along the shoreline and in the hillsides, offering plenty of photo opportunities and gardens to enjoy. A local waterside park and amusement park offer added family enjoyment on hot summer days. Visitors can also learn about the city’s innovative efforts to keep the lake healthy and free of overgrowth. During the fall, a brightly colored “paddlewheel” boat rototills the milfoil growing in the lake. In the summer, another boat harvests it, keeping the water and its unique ecology healthy. Coffee houses, a gourmand’s selection of restaurants, art galleries, nearby music venues, parks and shops are all available to travelers during the summer and fall, rounding out opportunities to experience Canada’s most unique pocket desert oasis.
